Yoo Seung-ho and Park Min-young’s emotional reunion in Remember

Finally, we get to the leads! SBS’s new super-memory lawyer drama Remember has been slowly releasing stills of the supporting cast, but at last we get to Yoo Seung-ho and Park Min-young, on the set of their first scene together. They star as classmates who reunite as adults, when he’s a lawyer and she’s a prosecutor, and he’s in the fight of his life to clear his father of a murder charge and get him off death row.

It sounds like a legal drama but it’s all about memory: Yoo Seung-ho stars as a genius with a hyperactive memory (a condition called hyperthymesia) that causes him to remember excessive amounts of detail about everything. His father (Jeon Gwang-ryul) is on death row for a murder he didn’t commit, but because of his Alzheimer’s, he’s been convinced that he was the killer and can’t remember otherwise. And finally, Yoo Seung-ho faces memory loss as well, putting even more pressure on him to solve Dad’s case before he loses his abilities.

Park Min-young costars as a quirky, cheerful prosecutor who’s still a young girl at heart. She’s still green at her job, but when she reunites with the hero, she decides to stick by him and help him clear Dad’s name, maturing in the process. I know Park Min-young always plays these types of characters, but she’s really found a way to make each plucky, lovable heroine her own.

Namgoong Min plays the villain — an entitled, depraved chaebol who’s probably going to make my blood boil (in a good way). Lee Shi-un is his former classmate who works as his secretary, and judging from the stills it looks like a nightmare of a job. And Park Sung-woong plays a colorful character — a former mob lawyer who worked his way up to a legitimate firm that does good in the world. He’ll get tangled up in the conspiracy as Yoo Seung-ho starts disrupting some powerful people who are behind his father’s frame-up.

Not that I was worried or anything, but now I’m really looking forward to the Yoo Seung-ho/Park Min-young pairing — I don’t know what caused them to lose touch when they were students, but it looks like one hell of a reunion. Or maybe Yoo Seung-ho just looks at everyone that way. Maybe he looks at his mailman that way, and his pharmacist, and his dry cleaner too, leaving everyone sighing in his wake. I mean, I KNOW he looks at his cat that way.

Remember follows Village: Secret of Achiara and premieres December 9.

Err I think PMY might be want to try short hair? Not like the one she had in healer. She is looking young but I can still see she is older than YSH. With a short hair , maybe she will look younger and ppl would not notice their age difference.

How old or young she looks is mostly irrelevant, but since she is several years his senior it's wild to me that she's the newbie at the job while he's the seasoned professional. Feminism aside, that would've been a great underdog trope opportunity.

Wow... so many famous faces... I mean these people have done some chunky roles themselves, some even as lead or second lead...
I loveY oo Seung Ho but I don't fancy Park Min Young. It is weird, I liked her only during Haru Haru MV but after that never found her appealingin any of her drama...there is something about her eyes...or is it face...but I love her voice...it is very soothing... I'll watch the drama for him but I am anticipating his other drama with imaginary cat more.

I've realized that a lot of times dramas tend to use "genius" as a descriptor for the male leads. Out of curiosity are there any dramas out there where the girl is the "genius" instead (or at least at equal standing with the "genius" male lead? I'm not an avid watcher of K-dramas but the few that I've watched tend to portray the female leads to be either just average but sincere or dumb but sincere.

In fact, the accomplished women who are supposedly smart are always the villain or the third wheel and honestly all they do is establish the fact that they are "geniuses"/"talented" at the beginning and then from thereon it's just one bad decision after another on their part - does not exactly live up to their character descriptions at the start of the drama.

I really hope I didn't offend anyone here (disclaimer: there is nothing wrong with not being talented or a genius but is there all there is to being a likeable female lead?) but I'd really appreciate it if someone could recommend a drama with strong female leads?

Sadly it's a trope to have your innocent but honest heroine in kdramas. So there aren't tons of dramas out there that centers on strong women. But a couple off the top of my head are:

Killer Girl K is an excellent show. It's just a 3 part special but it's basically about this girl assassin kicking major ass.

Angry Mom centers around a woman who goes back to school to protect her daughter and gets involved in solving a conspiracy all while protecting her daughter.

God’s Gift – 14 Days, I haven't seen this but seems to be about a mother trying to save her daughter.

Princess' Man has both a strong male and female lead. Sometimes she seems weak but she is incredibly strong especially with the gender restrictions of Joseon.

Mrs. Cop, I've also not seen this but seems to center around a strong woman.

Some dramas that I think slightly female-centric or at least main protagonist is a female, either sturdy character or simply good/genius at what she does:

Dae Jang Geum
Queen Seon Deok
Feast of the God
King 2 Hearts
My Husband Got A Family
Please Don't Ask About the Past
Protect the Boss
Queen of Housewives, Queen of Reversals
Fashion King, maybe?

Seconding the PRINCESS' MAN!! The heroine there is hands-down one of my favourite female characters ever! Neither the male or female leads are labeled as 'geniuses' but I think this drama is one of the few that I can think of at the top my head where both guy and girl are both complex characters of equally strong standing. In fact, one of the major strengths of the drama imo was how both characters are portrayed as true partners sharing a shared purpose in the end instead of merely being a Romeo & Juliet-type angst fest.

I'm probably not making much sense lol, check out the wonderful review of the series JB wrote!(spoilers galore though)

Just remembered a more recent drama: Heard it Through the Grapevine! While not explicitly labelled a genius, Go Ah-sung's character was shown to be smarter than the rich boy hero (this point was used as part of the plot).

That drama as a whole was amazing, one of the best ensemble dramas out there.

I can't think of any ~genius~ characters in kdramas that are women off the top of my head (and that really is depressing). I can think of a few for jdramas though (Tantei no Tantei features a female detective who hunts down other corrupt detectives, Keizoku 2: Spec features a brilliant female lead) but that's not what you asked lol.

The Princess' Man features two really amazingly strong female leads. I really recommend that show in general. Any Jung Ha Yeon sageuk also has fantastic and nuanced female characters.

More jdramas with genius female leads:
- Doctor X (genius doctor)
- Otenki Onessan (genius meteorologist)
- DoS Deka (genius... and sadistic detective)
- Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou (genius bookworm)

Not exactly genius, but strong female leads:
- Ogon no Buta (ex-swindler now an accounting auditor)
- Gokusei (granddaughter of Yakuza, homeroom teacher of the delinquent's class)
- BOSS (detective boss)

I guess we should name Empire of Gold as a smart girl yet again u are right, genius leads is a trend in dramaland for some time now, once a drama pops out it has attached teh word in the description and it's now lost the meaning with all this dramaland filled full of genius, yet again it would be much welcomed a genius heroine but i guess we're asking too much for some reason

I can think of strong/confident, smart female leads but not necessarily classified as geeeeeniuses.

Queen In-hyun's Man
Pinocchio
I Hear Your Voice
King 2 Hearts (maybe the closest as to be classified as genius because she is highly praised for her military skill)
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
I Am Legend
Runaway Plan B
Delightful Girl Choon Hyang
Arang and the Magistrate
Healer

The best I can come up with are female leads who are geniuses at particular skills. For instance, in Yoo-na's Street, Yoo-na is a genius pickpocket, and in Painter of the Wind, Shin Yoon-bok is a genius painter (though the "heroine's" gender is complicated--it's about a female-bodied male person longing for his/her lost womanhood).

As for dramas with smart/strong female leads...as I've learned from my own struggle over women in kdrama, your safest bet is to find feminist writers and PDs and go through their career.

More "serious" writers: Jung Ha-yeon (most feminist television writer out there, period), Ahn Pan-seok (okay, he's a PD, but his track record is amazing--his collaborations with Jung Sung-joo are most focused on female experience, but his other dramas also feature strong female characters), Noh Hee-kyung (I'd stick with her earlier works like Goodbye Solo and More Beautiful Than a Flower), Song Ji-na (before she sold out--Sandglass and Eyes of Dawn have extremely strong female characters)

More "fun" writers: Park Yeon-seon (if there is a power differential or emotional unavailability involved, her female leads come out on top, for once in kdrama haha), Kim Woon-kyung (known for writing flawed and strong-minded women), Jang Young-cheol/Jung Kyung-soon (they typically write women with...strong personalities, though some (History of the Salaryman) are far more endearing than others (Giant), and they do dabble in the kind of pseudo-feminism rampant in drama--ie, female characters who talk the talk but never walk the walk), Kim Do-woo (though sadly she's gone to pot since What's Up, Fox?)

I was just about to make a comment about Jung Sung-joo. Heard it Through the Grapevine and Secret Love Affair have some of the most well-written, fleshed out roles for women I've seen from dramaland yet. Noh Hee-kyung and Song Ji-na have their moments as well.
And not to nitpick, but I have to say I have some reservations about Kim Do Woo. Her male heroes she can come across as quite violent and dominating (even more so than average lead).

Yeah, Kim Do-woo is a bit iffy. I included her because Sam-soon herself is a revelation, and even though What's Up, Fox? had a pretty stereotypical female lead (she was a bit...dim), it did a good job exploring female sexuality.

we cauld add Empress Ki and Queen Seon Deok(Princess Duk Man later Queen SD) as close to being called genius heroines(in this case along strong)

0

Required fields are marked *

Well yes, it's rare for women to have geeenius character.
I'll try to name a few:
Genius painter: Shin Yun Bok - Painter of The Wind
Genius pianist: Seol Nae Il - Tomorrow's Cantabile
Genius cook/doctor: Dae Jang Geum
Genius doctor: not exactly the genius one, but Jung Ryeo Won in Medical Top Team is like being genius among geniuses as the title suggests.

Strong female leads:
Empire of Gold, I Hear Your Voice, Heard It Through The Grapevine, Empress Ki, Queen Seondeok, King 2 Hearts.

YSH looks so young in those shots! I always thought PMY was pretty young but seeing her in these stills with him made me realize there is a 7 year different between them. For some reason I had in my mind that YSH was older then he is and PMY was younger then she is.

But either way I'm not bothered by the age difference because PMY always has awesome chemistry with her co-stars.

While I love YSH, his baby face always makes me think of a high schooler dressed in adult clothes. Like in these stills. I can't believe him as a lawyer...PMY looks like his older sister/noona, which I guess she is...same thing happened in that drama with Yoon Eun Hye, although he was supposed to be younger than the female lead in that drama, so it felt more believable.

I'm actually most excited to see Park Min Young. I enjoyed her in City Hunter and grew to love her after Healer! She just has that something that really makes me care about her chaacters.

After people talking about the lack of geeeeeenius female leads in Kdramas, I can't help but wonder... What if the roles were reversed here, and Park Min Young played Yoo Seung-ho's role and vice-versa? Man, that would be a great chance for Park Min Young to break out of her usual type of role. I love her characters but would also love to see her try something new and really challenge herself! Plus, it would switch up the usual female/male lead dynamic and make things a bit more unique.

But, alas, no use thinking about things that will never happen.

I actually wanted to see both male and female lead are strong character. I was hoping PMY is not necessary to be a genius, but it is kinda refreshing if she can play her character like LBY in I Hear Your Voice.

Honestly, I didn't think much of him in WBDS and Arang (I was more into JCW and LJK), but I think he's really one of the actors to look out for.
