Secret writer returns with new melodrama
by javabeans
The writer of 2013’s hit melodrama Secret is coming back with a new drama, and if you liked Secret’s brand of addictive makjang (a heroine trampled by society who bounces back, a hero burning for revenge who falls in love with his target) you may also enjoy this new series, which sounds like it’s aiming for similar angst levels. It is (perhaps unfortunately) titled Savage Heat (it doesn’t sound quite as cheesy in Korean as it does in English, but small consolation), and it’s currently under consideration at KBS.
Savage Heat comes from writer Yoo Bo-ra, who isn’t the writer who also wrote this year’s Mask—that’s Secret’s other writer, Choi Ho-chul. This drama’s story is built around a love triangle involving two brothers and the woman they both fall for, and if that weren’t angsty enough, one brother becomes an elite detective who must apprehend his hyung, who has fallen into criminal ways in order to survive.
The main couple meet when they’re both experiencing lows in their lives and recognize the pain that the other one is suffering, but are forced to separate. They reunite 15 years later when they’ve grown into vastly different people, and although their love continues, they find they have even more obstacles now than they did 15 years ago. For fear of rushing into a relationship and ruining each other through their pasts, they stay apart in a melo loveline marked by heartache.
It’s a pretty vague description and not particularly fresh, but here’s where we look to the producers’ pedigrees and hope that it all comes through in execution; if this drama can recapture Secret’s blend of fast pacing and intense roller coaster of emotions, we may have another addictive melo on our hands.
Savage Heat (any hope of a title change, KBS?) is aiming to broadcast in the first half of next year.

Ditto!
When time travel love-trend coming in 2013, I had vomit and choked myself, loose count how many dramas those days having time travel plot.
But when first viral splash, Rooftop Prince and Queen In-Hyun's Man were fresh breeze and exiting to ride along. So, I was half grateful to have this trend in 2013.
But 2015?? Now is november already, and as long as I CAN REMEMBER, none, I mean none, one stellar drama in any genre that hits it all, steal our heart and make us remember 2015. The 2015's drama too common, too mainstream, too bland.. I dont know. And the 15's plot..suckss. I don't really buy multiple persona's plot..
(There's good dramas def here & there, but none really steal my heart and stay there forever)
Except healer.. which is start in the very beginning of year..
And perhaps Oh my ghostess..

Oh My Ghostess is the only drama that I recall being eager to watch as well. Some were okay like Healer, but most just seems bland like the poster above said. No must watch, water-cooler type dramas. No trend setters, nothing. Kdramas are losing steam fast, at a time a lot of other Asian countries are stepping up their game.
Already, China is having more impact with international viewers, and now dramas from the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam are being subbed, add to Thailand and the re-resurgence of some Taiwanese dramas (after their own dry spell) and Kdramas need to get themselves together fast, lest they lose their dominance.

I have to disagree. 2015 brought us a lot of good dramas, though it may not be original (at least in my opinion).
Punch, Kill Me Heal Me, Healer, I Remember You are real gems and I think I'll remember them for very long.
Oh My Ghostess and Twenty Again are also fantastic and I really enjoyed watching them.

All of these are 2015 dramas and have done a great job of not being like every hackneyed drama story template out there (can't even call them plots)

forced kiss in the car was... emm... i just didnt get it. haha.

I loved that drama despite the makjang and its predictability. And Tak Gu not ending up with Eugene was the biggest(and only?) plot twist in that drama. Lol. Still, I shipped them(though I wanted Joo Won to be happy too).
With school during the day and cram school at night, where do these teens find time for romance? Oh right, love traverses time and space lol.

The writer(s) of 2013's "Secret" managed to make makjang good (is that even possible???? Maybe it was the star power and great acting chops of the cast), I think do to its tight knit writing, and I liked it, so I might keep my eyes out for this one....

This one is not Secret's writer. Mask's is Secret's writer, the one who won the channel's one-act-play award. It seems to me that this writer is one of the usual people who work within the broadcast and help the newbies to quickly adjust (and, occasionally, adapt) to TV environment - I remember Dr. Jin having a writing duo as well.

I can't be the only one who thought of A Better Tomorrow when they read the premise. So many feels. However, while John Woo might have been a cheesy, sentimental man (I choose to ignore his career post-HK lol, hence the past tense), he's got nothing on Korean melos...fully expecting an OTP-driven sob-fest, wherein the brothers forget they even have jobs, let alone jobs that pit them against each other, until it figures into the romantic angst.
...sorry, this has to be one of the most random comments ever.

I love Secret, particularly because of leading casts. Plot was good, but i was into acting more. Melodrama can be plain boring if it falls under the wrong actors but if the casts are performing well, it can turn the mood on. Plus, the good script plays important part.
Melodrama is my fav, plus Secret still one of my fav drama todate, so i may give this a try. Just hope the casts are good.

Secret was the reason I started to love melodrama. After that, i found myself enjoying melo more than rom-com. If we talk about cliche, not only melo, so do rom-com . So in anyway it depends on our own preference.

meh. It would be better if the criminal brother with minor offences discovered his brother is corrupt as hell and part of something really monstrous. like getting the worst murderers false documents and clean start for good money. Then he starts to secretly sabotage the corrupt brothers deeds, he finds out ...maybe the woman has a hand in this and accuses the criminal brother of something, so the corrupt brother can put him away. but really it is just a way to make the corrupt one trust her and she is after her boyfriends killer, wanting to know under what name he goes currently.

I always thought that Secret was a "Scandal wanna be." It was not half as good as Scandal that aired just before it. There were lots of loose ends that did not get addressed, and the end was rushed and unsatisfactory. The best thing about Secret was Bae soo-Bin and Ji Sung. But Scandal was meticulously written, with no loose ends, and fantastic performance by the whole cast. I liked
I loved Mask. One of my favorite drama this year. And Yoo Bo-Ra's Drama Special was far better than Secret.

You mean Scandal: A Shocking and Wrongful Incident?
What do they have in common for you in order to adress Secret as "Scandal Wannabe" except from the fact that they both fall under the category drama?
They seriously have like 0% similarity plot wise, genre wise, character wise or even cast wise.

Childhood romance trope is so over used but if its used in right ways it still might work... (Secret was good so little hope is raised)
All it requires is good casting and script (easier said than done ) if things have to be changed start with the title.

We can never tell how it turns out without watching the episodes first.
Many dramas that people have thought would fail became a hit so I'll first wait for the casting (they better choose the best ones for the roles) and then watch the first few episodes before I give my reaction.
It's actually good that people don't think much of it now because over-hyped dramas tend to disappoint in the end..

And that's the proper grown-up attitude that unbiased audiences should have. I agree with @nami as well - let's not forget which drama was the underdog during the Heirs' " ruling era" and what has happened in terms of ratings. Expecting practically nothing from a TV project is a win-win strategy for the us, the viewers...

Okay, I didn't hate the car kiss in Secret like everyone else that's commented obviously does. I thought it was an accurate expression of the inner truth of Ji Sung's character. It was aggressive and fully conveyed his attraction and desire for Hwang Jung-Eum's character in an "at odds with himself" kind of way.
It was like he was saying, "this is the reality of where I'm at with you--I want you." Ji Sung's character followed it up by slowing down and kissing her gently once he got the truth of his feelings out. It was an unusual scene and an adult one. The dialogue that followed between them confirmed Ji Sung's character's intense feeling. He did not want Hwang Jung-Eum's character to think what he'd just done was a mistake; it was a turning point in their relationship (dysfunctional and riddled with turmoil though it was).
Secret was not about puppy love.
