Warning: Rogue ban-hammer on the loose

It’s come to our attention that a few of you have been banned by our hosting service in the past few days. Which, eek! We are working with our host and developer to fix this problem, since we absolutely don’t want to be banning you guys for no reason!

We have the sad, niggling suspicion that our pretty star rating system is connected to the bannings (posting 100 times with the same message in different recaps is fine with us, but apparently not fine with the algorithm that identifies spam). We are working to solve the issues because you guys should be able to post repeatedly; we hope not to have to disable the ratings, though we will do that if necessary. (This is why we can’t have nice things!)

In the meantime, if you’ve been banned or know someone who has been, PLEASE contact us so we can have you unbanned — at present, we have to unban manually, so we need you to let us know!

Thanks for putting up with the kinks in the system, which we hope to hammer out soon. I’ve got my hammer out and ready to go.

Well, I have a website as well (wordpress, host Go Daddy), and another one (wordpress, Bluehost). and both of them had the same problem in the past 5-6 days without me changing anything. Do you think it's possible they updated a data list of IPs or something?

Is there another way to rate instead of posting? I would love to rate some shows but I don't want to go posting on all these threads just to give a rating. Especially on older shows..

Yes, click submit comment with the name field left blank. It will pop up the ratings window but your comment will be rejected (since Name is a required field).

Goodness I got banned just recently too due to voting! But the next day I'm no longer banned so it's all good :) I guess there's a 24 hour wait if you're banned to be un-banned again?

If this happens again (or to anyone else), let us know so we can make sure you're unbanned right away! I'm not sure if it unbans automatically but we can for sure do it manually, as long as we know who it is.

Thanks Javabeans, well...if I get banned again then I'll let you know. Although I'm pretty much finished with my voting spree so I doubt I would get banned again. Thanks for sorting this out and making this site better for all of us. I got to admit, I do love giving my favourite shows the number of stars it deserves. It's a nice feature to DB. :)

I've been thinking, we should have a star rating for favourite DB article as well.

5 stars - Well-written and I agree with everything you say
4 stars - This is so much fun to read, but can I add a little something...
3 stars - I mostly like what you say, and ....
2 stars - Good to know, no comment

Is your rating system for how well written the article is? Almost all the articles are written in good English here.

If on the other hand, you want to rate the topic of the article (eg SBS passes on on Goodbye, Mr Black) then thats a slippery slope. I would not venture that way.

Nothing as complicated as that... just a fun rating to indicate the level of agreement we have with the article. Anyway, ratings are supposed to be fun, so anyone can come up with their own way to rate whatever (as long as it's polite) LOL! :)

Slightly off topic question: is the rating option only available when posting on a desktop version of the site? I just commented on a recap, using Android, but I wasn't offered the option to rate the episode.
