She Was Pretty: Episode 6

There’s nothing better to spark a romance than a healthy dose of jealousy, and poor Sung-joon never even sees it coming. Even worse when the person making him so jealous wants nothing more than to be his new bestie. He’s also starting to feel that something about this whole Hye-jin situation is terribly wrong, but one person’s bad decision could halt his discovery of the truth in its tracks.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Kneeling in the rainy street, Sung-joon cups Hye-jin’s face gently — and they’re nearly mowed down by a giant truck. Hye-jin hustles the stricken Sung-joon to a nearby bus stop and fusses over him, wondering if she should take him to the hospital.

Sung-joon gathers his wits enough to tell her she can go, but he’s clearly not well enough to get himself home. She notices his balled-up fists and gets him a driver, asking them to take good care of him. Awww.

Ha-ri is still waiting with Shin-hyuk for Sung-joon to show up, so she calls him, but the driver answers his phone and tells her he’s sick and being taken home. She runs out leaving Shin-hyuk complaining about getting dressed up for nothing, but he takes advantage of the moment to take some selfies. Because of course he does.

Ha-ri pounds on Sung-joon’s door, which he eventually answers only to collapse in her arms. She gets him to the sofa and destroys his kitchen trying to make soup, and he recovers enough to join her and ask how she came to be here. He apologizes, looking pitiful and weak, and asks why she wanted to see him. She fibs that she just wanted to return his jacket.

Hye-jin dries her hair, wondering why Sung-joon touched her face and looked at her that way. She gets a little dreamy thinking about it (well, who wouldn’t?) and wonders if she looked pretty. She knocks sense back into herself and wonders if Sung-joon caught a cold, obsessing over whether she should take him some medicine.

She gets a call from Shin-hyuk, who invites his new dongsaeng out. She says she has something to do and nearly asks him a favor, but she backs down, which has him curious. He teases it out of her but busts a gut when she asks him to take Sung-joon some medicine, so she quickly backpedals.

Shin-hyuk is annoyed that nothing is going right today, but he’s mostly frustrated on Hye-jin’s behalf. He mutters to the empty room that even if she goes to Sung-joon, nothing good will happen. He can’t stand it and calls her back, saying that he’s not the kind of person to run other people’s errands, but he’ll do this for her. Okay, you are TOO sweet.

He’s not doing it for free though — he never does — and asks what she plans to do for him, demanding three favors from her in exchange for this one. Hye-jin knows it’s not a fair trade but she hastily agrees when Shin-hyuk threatens to hang up, and he makes her swear an oath. Ha, that’s going to bite her in the butt later.

Meanwhile Ha-ri finishes her cooking, but Sung-joon’s fallen asleep on the couch. She watches him sleep for a moment then leaves, running into Shin-hyuk in the elevator, and they both gape in surprise to see each other here. They’re both vague about why they’re here, and leave each other with an awkward high-five.

Shin-hyuk gets no answer at Sung-joon’s door, though he hilariously tries calling him differently each time he knocks (~knock knock~ “Deputy Chief Ji?” ~knock knock~ “Ji Sung-joon?” ~knock knock~ “Sung-joon-ah!”). He remembers that he still has Sung-joon’s key card and lets himself in, seeing Sung-joon still sleeping on the couch. He notices the puzzle (now unassembled in a glass jar) and figures this is the puzzle that matches Hye-jin’s lone piece.

He tells Sung-joon the truth about Hye-jin even though he’s asleep, then sees the soup that Ha-ri made, on the table waiting to be eaten. It smells completely inedible, so he switches it out with the good porridge that he brought. He gets Sung-joon a cool towel for his forehead, clucking like a mother hen.

Before he knows it, Shin-hyuk is spoon-feeding Sung-joon, grumbling the whole time, which is just the sweetest thing ever. I love this guy.

Sung-joon wakes the next morning and hears someone in the apartment with him, immediately thinking, “Hye-jin!” What a shock to turn and see… Shin-hyuk in his robe. HAHA. He immediately figures out that Hye-jin sent him and gripes about her meddling, but he’s shocked again when he realizes that Shin-hyuk is also wearing his underpants. OMG.

He tells Shin-hyuk to take them off right now, then takes it back when Shin-hyuk is only too happy to oblige. Sung-joon is all Don’t take them off, don’t return them, EVER, hee. Shin-hyuk starts breakfast with a saucy little butt-waggle, while Sung-joon can only stare in horror.

Hye-jin is sneezing at breakfast, and Ha-ri asks if she “also” has a cold. Hye-jin wonders who else Ha-ri knows who’s sick, so Ha-ri fudges that a lot of people are sick right now, and rushes to pack Hye-jin a healthy lunch.

Shin-hyuk texts Hye-jin to tell her that “dongsaeng’s first love” is feeling much better today. At the same time, Ha-ri gets a text from Sung-joon apologizing for falling asleep, and thanking her for the porridge. That’s strange, since she made him soup, but she brushes it off.

Shin-hyuk follows Sung-joon to work, singing the praises of his fantastically comfortable American knickers, even begging for a few more pair. Sung-joon loses his temper, and I’m dying seeing him yelling, “Panty! Panty!” in the lobby of his workplace.

He growls at Shin-hyuk to shut up, and Shin-hyuk whines that they should be closer now that they’ve spent the night together. Sung-joon looks like he’s in a living nightmare as Shin-hyuk chases him (did he just grab his butt?) to the elevator.

Sung-joon ends up following Hye-jin into the office, triggering memories of his panic attack the night before. He only now recalls touching her face and startles himself, feeling awkward in front of her, and covers his nerves by fussing at her for sending Shin-hyuk to his place.

Just as he’s winding up a good rant, Hye-jin sneezes right in his face. She tries to wipe the snot off him with her sleeves and he bats her away, and Hye-jin starts yet another work day in humiliation. Shin-hyuk finds Sung-joon still in the hall and cozies up to him just to see him get nervous, giggling that he’s fun to tease.

Hye-jin sneezes all over her coworkers and they all treat her like she’s plagued — nobody has time to get sick with their looming deadline. Shin-hyuk stands up for her until she nearly sneezes on him, then he hides behind the copier, ha.

Sung-joon hears her sneezing and sees everyone wearing masks and spraying the air, and awwww, he goes out to buy medicine for her. It’s hilarious how he tries to get it to her without anyone noticing him being nice, having to swerve and hide whenever someone comes near.

He’s sniped by Shin-hyuk, who brings Hye-jin medicine, a mask (aww, he drew a puppy face on it), and a cold pack for her forehead. When he leaves, Sung-joon thunders HEY INTERN at Hye-jin, but when she looks at him wearing that puppy mask he nearly loses his train of thought. He sternly asks where those notes are, and Hye-jin wonders what he’s talking about — there was no meeting today. Whoopsie.

He claims he meant yesterday’s minutes and she says she left them on his desk, and it’s hilarious watching him struggle to hold onto his poker face. He finally leaves, and Shin-hyuk comes back to tell her the cold medicine may make her drowsy. I love how Hye-jin smiles that he’s taking care of her now that they’re friends.

Sung-joon heads out of the office and makes it to the elevator when Shin-hyuk coming blazing down the hall, and he quickly pushes the “close door” button, ha. He gives Shin-hyuk a snarky eyebrow and giggles on the way down, then takes a call from Ha-ri.

She tells him to lunch at the same soup place he took her before, since she always feels better after eating there, and he invites her to join him so he can repay her for the porridge. It’s raining again when Ha-ri leaves to meet Sung-joon, and she remembers happily playing in the rain as a child with her mother. Sung-joon finds her and complains about the rain, but frowns when he notices that she seems to love it.

He’s confused, and mentions how she used to hate the rain, and she just says that she feels different now. The light changes and Ha-ri says, “It’s a green light!” and starts across. But Sung-joon is troubled, because he knows that Hye-jin always said, “It’s a go!” when the light changed.

Back at the office, Joon-woo is excited over news of an anticipated new book’s release. They talk about the author, who writes in English but is rumored to be a Korean ajumma. That sparks a discussion about pen names, which seems to make Shin-hyuk thoughtful about something.

Hye-jin finds an onion on her desk, which Shin-hyuk claims is a million-won Italian onion they’re going to use in a photo shoot. Hye-jin falls for it and he laughs at her gullability. Hye-jin takes Sung-joon’s mail to his office (why is it always so dark in there?) and notices the website he’s got pulled up on his computer, which outlines a folk remedy of leaving an onion nearby when you’re sick to lesson the severity of the illness. She realizes Sung-joon must have left the onion, and smiles.

The office is empty when Sung-joon returns, but he sees the onion in a glass of water on Hye-jin’s desk, complete with a cute smiley-face drawn on it. He smiles at it, but frowns again when a flash goes off in his face. It’s Chief Editor Kim, crowing that she’s finally seeing his beautiful smile for the first time.

She asks what happened to make him so happy — is he dating? He denies it but she’s not buying it, and he just coughs nervously and flees to his office, denying that he smiled. Ha, he points to Onion Head and warns him not to smile, either.

Everyone heads home at the end of the day except Hye-jin who, despite being sick, is given a project to complete before morning. She remembers the medicine from Shin-hyuk and takes some, and soon she’s nodding off at her computer. I know that feeling.

She tries chewing gum to stay awake, which works for about five seconds, and Sung-joon leaves his office to see her head lolling back and forth. She starts to tumble out of her chir and he catches her head on reflex, holding veeery still so as not to wake her.

Ah-reum comes in wearing a skin mask like something from a horror movie, and when she speaks it scares Sung-joon so badly he drops Hye-jin. He whirls around and sees Ah-reum, gets scared a second time, and sits in Hye-jin’s lap. He swears he wasn’t scared at all, and Hye-jin has to poke him to get off her, hee.

Hye-jin heads home, nodding off again while waiting for the bus. Sung-joon sees her from his car, struggling to stay awake and coughing miserably. Her bus arrives, but she falls asleep again on her seatmate’s shoulder.

She gets a new seatmate at the next stop, and her head rolls onto his shoulder too. This time there’s no objection, because it’s Sung-joon, here to make sure she gets home safely. She never realizes it’s him, and she makes her drop off while he wonders where he is.

On his way home Sung-joon makes a call to what sounds like a therapist in the States. He asks about old trauma returning under stress, and is advised to avoid the stress at all costs.

He mentions that a stranger seems to keep overlapping with someone he used to know, while the person he thought he knew feels like the stranger. The therapist says it’s normal for a person to change as they get older, while we’re treated to a broody shower.

The therapist says that being hung up on your first love is a form of Zeigarnik Effect (experiencing intrusive thoughts about something gone unfinished). It’s not Fate, or because he still loves her, but just that he never got to see the relationship through to the end. He’s advised to move out of the past, and live in the now.

Ha-ri finds Hye-jin resting on a swing at the park, and the two friends get a little exercise. Hye-jin tells her friend the secret about Most, that it may be discontinued in a few months if they can’t raise their sale numbers. Ha-ri asks what will happen to Sung-joon but Hye-jin doesn’t know.

Shin-hyuk snacks on sausage sticks and beer, staring at his phone, wondering if he should call Hye-jin to check on her. His beer is swiped right out of his hand by Ha-ri, and she sits and tells him that she needed his help because she’s been lying to someone. It’s someone she shouldn’t see, but she’s falling for him.

Shin-hyuk asks if he’s married or a convict, or maybe underage? Ha-ri denies that so Shin-hyuk doesn’t see the problem, and tells her to just keep seeing him. Love is crazy, so don’t make it so complicated and just go for it.

Ha-ri goes back to work looking for her discarded metaphor shoes, and luckily (or unluckily) the maintenance woman rescued them since they were so new. Ha-ri thinks to herself that she may get hurt, but she wants to give this a shot.

At home Hye-jin contemplates her puzzle piece, and we see that when Sung-joon caught her head when she toppled over, she’d woken and seen his face reflected in her mirror. She’d feigned sleep to avoid an awkward moment, and now she presses her hand to her chest, feeling her heart pound.

In his suite, Sung-joon makes his own Onion Head, grinning at it adorably. During the meeting the next day he can scarcely concentrate for staring at Hye-jin, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Shin-hyuk.

Sung-joon finally snaps out of it and asks about an upcoming business trip, which was supposed to be prepared by him, Reporter Cha, and Ah-reum. Ah-reum has to bow out for a photo shoot, and Seul doesn’t want to, so she suggests sending Hye-jin. But Cha decides to take Joon-woo, and suddenly Seul wants to go too. You’re so not subtle.

Ha-ri sees the puzzle piece that Hye-jin left on her dresser, and remembers the night she met Sung-joon when he mentioned the puzzle. She recalls how emotional it made him and contemplates the puzzle piece, and don’t you even dare. She and Sung-joon have a date that night, and Ha-ri’s stepmother happens to see them and wonder why that man calls Ha-ri, “Hye-jin.”

Ha-ri shows Sung-joon the puzzle piece, saying that she just found it, and the umbrella on the back proves it’s the same piece. Sung-joon is stunned, having just started to suspect that this isn’t his Hye-jin, but the puzzle piece seems to contradict that. He actually looks a little disappointed to see the puzzle piece in her possession.

Ha-ri is confronted in the restroom by her stepmother, who comments on her lying to a man about her name. She asks if she’s lying about anything else, and wonders what kind of man Sung-joon is to necessitate lying.

Ha-ri just says there’s a good reason for it, and to pretend she didn’t see her. She even begs, and we don’t hear Stepmom’s answer, but Ha-ri suddenly runs out and asks Sung-joon to come with her, now.

Stepmom is right behind her and cryptically says to Sung-joon that they seem to suit each other, and that she’ll see him again. Ha-ri storms out with Sung-joon chasing her, and he asks who that woman was. She tearfully tells him not to call her “Hye-jin,” resting her head on his shoulder and asking him to just stay here for a minute, and not to ask her anything today. Sung-joon feels awkward, but pats her back sweetly.

The real Hye-jin is at home, daydreaming about catching Sung-joon staring at her during the meeting, when Ha-ri comes home. Hye-jin fusses over her like a mom, which makes Ha-ri smile at the same time as she feels guilty over what she did tonight.

At bedtime Ha-ri asks to sleep with Hye-jin, and they end up in a cute tickle fight. Later Ha-ri asks Ha-ri why she’s more quiet than usual, knowing her well enough to know she has something to tell her. Ha-ri admits that she does, but says she’ll tell her everything later.

That night Sung-joon puts his puzzle back together and reframes it, but he no longer looks happy about it. He throws away his Onion Head, and goes to bed.

He storms into the office the next morning all business, and Chief Editor Kim makes her daily Grand Entrance after him. Hye-jin takes her some papers to sign, and Kim asks her how long until she becomes more Most-like. Ha. Hye-jin says she’s been making an effort, but Kim tells her to have a better sense of style.

Shin-hyuk decides to use one of Hye-jin’s promised favors today, saying that he’ll go easy on her for this first one. He wants dinner tonight, to which she readily agrees… I KNEW he was going to use this to wrangle dates out of her.

Something comes up for Reporter Cha, so she tells Hye-jin to go on the business trip in her place. They’re meeting right now to leave, but Hye-jin didn’t pack anything and she’s completely unprepared. Reporter Cha gives Hye-jin her suitcase and sends her off (with Shin-hyuk calling weakly after her about his whelk dinner, hee).

Seul talks Joon-woo into riding alone with her, which makes him wary but he complies. It also leaves Sung-joon to ride alone with Hye-jin. Sung-joon takes the situation with a resigned air, but Hye-jin is horrified to be stuck in the car alone with him.

COMMENTS

Oh Ha-ri, I truly thought better of you. I’m genuinely shocked that she would steal the puzzle piece and use it to prove she’s the real Hye-rin. I can’t believe she would throw over her lifelong best friend for a man she just met, not to mention a man she knows her friend has a past and a present connection with. It’s awful enough that they work together, but this is someone that she knows has a “first love” experience with Hye-jin, and yet she’s willing to lie, and even steal a treasured possession, to get what she thinks she wants. I still don’t believe Ha-ri has any malicious intent, and that she truly loves Hye-jin. I don’t even think she’s genuinely falling for Sung-joon, but is only being swayed by the attention of a man who seems to really care about her, which is a novelty for her. But she’s forgetting the part where he doesn’t actually care about her, he cares about the real Hye-jin.

I do feel badly for Ha-ri and her loneliness, but I also feel that it’s mostly self-inflicted. She chooses to only date shallow men (I have a hard time believing that no man of quality has ever been interested in her), which is nobody’s fault but her own. And yes, she has a sucktastic home life, but she also has a wonderful second family who considers her a daughter. But again, she’s just going to risk all that for this man she’s known for what, a month at most? And it’s not as if this can last, because she is lying about who she is, and eventually she’ll have to come clean. She’ll lose Sung-joon then, anyway. I do hope she spends more time with Shin-hyuk, and soon, because he may be weird but he speaks the honest truth. He’ll tell her what’s what, once he learns what’s happening, and make no bones about it.

I love the ongoing rain motif as a catalyst of emotional forward motion, because everyone in the drama reacts to the rain differently. To Sung-joon, obviously, it’s a reminder of the most traumatic days of his young life — but also one of the most meaningful days, when he made his first friend. Hye-jin doesn’t like rain either but to her, it’s a reminder of her childhood, when life was easy for her and she was able to give comfort to someone in need, something that is an innate part of her personality. And to Ha-ri, it reminds her of her lost mother, which must be a bittersweet feeling… she had a good relationship with her mother, but for some reason, she lost her. I feel sure the rain will come to mean many more things to our lovers as time goes on.

I’m growing to love Hye-rin more and more, the more we see her interact with Sung-joon. He brings out the caretaker in her, who sees what he really needs and makes sure he gets it, even if she can’t do it openly. She sees him not eating and gets him a sandwich… honors his wish for her to leave after his breakdown but makes sure he has a safe ride home… sends someone to bring him porridge and medicine when he’s sick. It kills me that she has to do these things from the shadows, but it makes me love her even more, that she prioritizes his comfort and well-being even if she can’t do it herself. It’s a good lesson to Sung-joon that I hope he realizes at some point — true caring for a person doesn’t need recognition, just seeing your loved one safe and happy is its own reward.

I’m so glad that Sung-joon is finally softening towards Hye-jin, because their interactions are just so cute. We’re finally getting that chemistry we all came here for, even when they aren’t onscreen together, which bodes well for the future when they do finally start spending time together. Just seeing Hye-jin worry for Sung-joon’s health, then him grouchily returning the favor, is so sweet. The whole bit with the onion slays me, because with him leaving it for her, then her decorating it, they’re beginning to see that the other just might be someone who regards them as worthy. They could even get along and actually like each other. It’s cute that each knows exactly what’s going on with the other, but still denying it when face-to-face, like nervous teenagers with their first crush. Which makes sense, since they are each other’s first crush, though only one half of the pair knows it.

Though I appreciate, for once, the drama addressing the whole fated-first-love trope and how it’s really not Fate, but unfinished business. How refreshing to see a show take the scientific approach, using the overdone trope to spell out that there’s really no such thing as first loves being fated to be together. Especially since the misguided belief is getting poor Sung-joon all twisted up, since he feels that something is off but he just can’t let go of the idea of belonging with “Hye-jin,” even when it feels wrong. Conversely, he’s feeling himself drawn to the real Hye-jin and is struggling with wanting to get closer to her, but being held back by the notion that he should be feeling this for the woman he knows as Hye-jin. Of course, we know that the person he’s beginning to feel attracted to IS the real Hye-jin — but for once it’s not because of a trope, or because he thinks Fate has decreed it, but because he truly finds her compelling. He’s meant to be with her not because they knew each other as children, but because they care for each other as mature adults. Of course we know all this, but it’s going to get so much better once Sung-joon figures it out for himself.

Just that I Love, Love, Love Love Park Seo Joon. He's got this magnetic appeal, yes, but he is also very good in his roles that you really imbibe what his character is all about.
I haven't seen Dream High but am sure that was an easy role for him to play but in Witch's Romance, where he played the much younger lover of Uhm Jung Hwa, I knew right there and then he is one of the finest actors of his generation.

Just as we stop hating Sung Joon, we start hating Hari. Her stealing Hye Jin's puzzle piece was inexcusable. She's so far past the line that she can't even see the line. (The line is a dot to her.) I can't wait until Hye Jin realizes her puzzle piece is missing and confronts her. Best friend, my ass. My only solace is at least Sung Joon no longer likes her and was even disappointed she had the puzzle piece.

Sung Joon is killing me. We got everything we asked for -- he fell for Hye Jin without knowing she was his Hye Jin. Not that it's necessary, seeing as how she already caught him catching her head, then staring at her during the meeting, but now that Hye Jin is riding in his car alone, she is definitely going to find his towing receipt. I hope she remembers borrowing Sung Joon's shoulder on the bus that night. Oh Ri Jin and Oh Ri On are onion twins. Sung Joon better rescue his Onion Head from the trash can. Never thought I would be thanking Seul for gold digging, but I am willing to sacrifice innocent Joon Woo for our couple to have some alone time. I fully expect a kiss next week, so don't let me down, Episode 8. A big thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

Well it isn't compleatly Hari's fault. A lot of the blame has to go to Hye Jin. HJ asking Hari to pretend being her was unacceptble in first place as she betrayed the friendship/love between her and Sung Joon. Not to mention the insecurities of HJ also put Hari in this uncomfortable situation. She wanted to get out of several times but because of unexpected events couldn't. Thus rather than hating Hari, I feel pity for her.

Sorry to say but "she WILL act like a bitch later on" 'cause it is a drama, and they love to make the second MALE lead, the most perfect, lovable person who can not get the girl, and let the viewers suffer from a second lead syndrome but when it comes to a FEMALE second lead, she must be a curse-worthy selfish girl!!!!!

I really dont know about Korea, but I know many girls who got friendzoned by their crush but helped them to get their love, wished them for a happy life, some of them expressed their feelings and moved on (without causing trouble), some of them remained as friends.....

Aaaaarrrrggghhhh..... I am soo angry the show made Ha Ri like that, I adored the Girlship :/

+1 Totally agree. She asked HR once to pretend to be her, knowing HR & SJ wouldn't cross paths again. She's basically clueless.

It's a petty reason to be blaming HJ for the bad choices HR made. Any ways, what she did is wrong in so many levels. And we can't justify what she did just because of what she's been dealing.

I don't hate Hari, I just hate the wrong things she's been doing. I keep thinking if I was in her situation, there is no way in hell I'd do that. I'd rather tell the truth and go from there.

Considering how freaked out she was of Sung Jung finding out about the lie (going as far as to almost resigning from the hard earned job), it wasn't only one time thing. Although she thought it would be. That is also why Hari didn't reveal her identity when they meet second time and instead tried to get away from him. However, since it is a drama a lot of coincidences keep happening.

I am not justifying what Hari did; however, she really tried to both reveal the truth to HJ and get rid of SJ, but luck wasn't on her side. The problem with a lie is, that the longer you keep it alive intentionally or otherwise, the harder it's to reveal the truth. I hope this situation gets resolved peacefully, as they both really care about each other.

As for blaming HJ well, I don't think I will really stop blaming her for that lie. One of the side effects was the Hari situation, but essentially it meant that whatever HJ and SJ had in the past wasn't worth much.

she's not a terrible person or the worst person in the world. what she did wasn't nice at all and i'd be angry, as a friend, for a long time. but they're close and they can get through it i think.

I tried to post this in an earlier episode but I had computer problems. So I'll try again.

I agree that Ha-ri did something rotten, but not malum in se (morally reprehensible). She deeply cares about her friend Hye-jin. She is just unexpectedly falling in love for the first time, and she doesn't know how to handle it. Further, Hye-jin made it clear that she was going to drift away from Sung-joon.

I truly enjoy Hye-jin's character and I also think Shin-hyuk is wonderful.

In a previous episode, Sung-joon intentionally dropped Hye-jin on the asphalt!

If Hye-jin let's Sung-joon back into her heart, she is like those women who are put in ER by their husbands/boyfriends with a concussion and broken ribs, the judge issues a restraining order against their spouse, but a week later, they let the bully back in the house because he, "apologized and said he was sorry."

It would be great if Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin's would end up together. No chance of that happening.

Since this is male dominated Korea, and the writers are men, Hye-jin will cave because she has such little self esteem. After all, to many Korean men, yanking your girlfriend by the wrist or arm, and slapping her around a little is considered romantic foreplay.

Sung-joon dropped Hye-jin on the f**king asphalt!

There, I feel better now that I got that out. Ok, let the romance continue as expected.

I am really going to miss "Twenty Again" when that finishes.

*Heavy sigh.

Heh, this show has got the "flow" now, but Ha Ri is getting jarring. She is still one of the most conflicted and challenging second lead characters to date though. On one hand, a friend, but that is a tainted version of a friend now, cause all the sweetness will never feel sincere....but maybe it is? On the other hand, she just doesn´t seem to be able to stop herself, like slipping all the way downhill. You slip and you climb or walk away, there is no stopping in the middle. So try to bare with it. no matter how loud we scream here, we can´t do anything.

why is Shin Hyuk so agreeing to everything? does he like Hye Jin at all? Or what are his motifs? How is he so unselfish? Would he really just let go if she runs to Sung Joon? Or is there something else he is interested in?

I wonder if he is the writer TEN, like some suggested. Somehow, that would be too easy. perhaps the young guy is the writer and the editor in chief is an actual editor, but for Tens´ books?

I like the shift with comic moments, they are woven better into the events, cause and consequence, whereas in the first episode it felt like the jokes bumped into chairs and brick walls and kinda stumbled through.

Not too much plot and so many familiar tropes, but SIWON. and it is not JUST a comic role, but he also has depth. who knew.

I see Shin Hyuk as a lonely character who hides his lack of real connection behind a jokey attitude. It is possible that he is the writer as he is a secret observer in a way a writer gathers material on human character. He started out observing Hye Jin as she is slightly bizarre person and then gleefully helping or hindering her to watch what happened. After they had a genuine conversation he begins to appreciate her warmth and wants to be friends. The secondary male lead is often moved to examine his feelings when confronted by competition from the first male lead. Let's see what happens next week.
Ha Ri has crossed a line, but I think she has rationalized it to herself as a temporary situation given that he will probably be returning to the US. She is going to enjoy the balm of his sweet attention and her BFF will never know. She is charmingly sealfish in the way of beautiful people.

My thoughts exactly. At least I hope that is her reason for diving into this relationship disregarding her best friend.

Shin Hyuk is the only character that still is a mystery for me,..
but i think, just like SUNG JOON who realizes the feeling he has for HYE JIN after seeing SH & HJ together that triggers jealousy, he will soon realize that he has feeling for HYE JIN which is more than just what he should feel towards a sister,..just like all dramas do to the second lead

SHIN HYUK is the most adorable and he is so fun to watch though i still love Sung Joon more,..
and i never watch a siwon drama before and is surprised to see how good he is as an actor,,,
the character he plays is really the opposite of him yet he is so believable,..
his expressions, OMG,,,i am a fan of him now,..

I know everyone hates Ha-ri right now, but idk, I still like her lol. She's a very real character. She's going through a tough time and she's making worse and worse decisions. And she knows it. At least she feel terrible, even though her actions are selfish. I hope the show doesn't turn her into a outright hateful person and instead gives her a chance of redemption and a peace of mind. She really was/is a great friend to Hye-jin.

I too get that she is human and she is making mistakes. And I totally agree with redfox and even, in that her friendship is fake. BUT what she is did is past a small mistake, it's a whopping big mistake. I mean, even if she does like Sung Joon for real and let's say on a different plot line he loves her back. Did she not even consider the psychological trauma her friend would go through when she found out?

So if the relationship her Ha Ri and Sung Joon were to happen, obv. when Hye Jin finds out she'd be too hurt to be friends anymore, so basically Ha Ri is willing to risk her friendship. It's too messy and I would NEVR do this to my best friend AND I have a slightly mess up family too, so I don't think her family problems is a valid excuse.

whether You or I would do it is not really the point. I definitely not, because of a guy, please? I don´t give a blink
but many people would. They would even do worse things to a best friend who is actually in a relationship. and to her knowledge, Hye Jin hates Sung Joon.
But what I really can´t understand is, Ha Ri knows Sung Joon is nasty to her best friend, shouldn´t she attack him with fury and never want to see the sight of him?

Required fields are marked *

oops I meant her friendship is *NOT fake. typo sorry.

Would many people would take a puzzle piece that significantly represents hye jin and confirms that she is hye jin, basically stealing her best friend's childhood? uhh, no.
Yes, many people would fall in love with him, but not many people would take the piece that has so much sentimental value to 2 people. She is far across the line.

and to top it off, Ha Ri had the chance to be Sung Joon's friend when he was young but was shallow and chose not to, so sympathy for her is limited, because she is only falling in love with him when he turned hot.

and finally, Ha Ri knows that he is horrible to Hye Jin but has not really seen it. She has only seen his sweet side, and sometimes when u don't see it before your own eyes it's hard to think that person would do something mean or confront the person about it. Flawed logic but nonetheless, this is what I think is going on.

I don't hate HR, I'm just disappointed in her because I never thought she'd make such an actively deceptive move. When she did that it just rubbed me the wrong way. Whenever she calls SJ's name I can't help but feel unsettled about it. So I don't hate HR but her actions are inexcusable especially when you remember that she's basically using her friend's identity to keep a guy interested.

Agreed. I excused all the missed chances to tell Sung joon the truth because in a way, Hye-jin is also guilty of not telling the truth. The part that bugs me is stealing the puzzle piece and passing it off to Sungjoon as though she'd had it this whole time. I think of her as a child desperately wanting attention from a parent or adult and when the adult is desperately looking for something, she goes through lengths to find that something so she is forever in the adult's favor.

I agree with you in a way. In contrast to the other three comic book leads, she is human. She is misled and makes the wrong decisions, but at least she's given decisions to make.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm with you. In a typical drama where the female second lead is usually set up to be hateable, I understand everyone's hate because I usually hate her too. But with this show, Ha-ri isn't set up that way. She is her own character living in her own world who is just vulnerable and ends up making wrong choice after wrong choice. And I don't hate her for it. Yes, it was pretty low of her to steal the puzzle piece (I might've said she was dead to me...), but I understood where she was coming from. I think she knows it can't last forever, so why not take as much from it now? And maybe that's her problem, living in the now rather than thinking about what's ahead.

I trust the writers to develop her story so that she grows into someone she accepts fully. In that sense, she is the antithesis of Hye-jin. Ha-ri accepts who she is on the outside more readily than who she is inside, and Hye-jin is the same vice versa. Hye-jin roped Ha-ri into pretending to be Hye-jin, and that gave Ha-ri an easy way to fall into a life that's not hers.

Ultimately, both their journeys will culminate in them being 100% happy with who they are.

The truth is neither friend is communicating with each other. Hari is most guilty by not telling Hye Jin Sung Joon knows she is not in London and she has been meeting with him all along, but at the same time, Hye Jin never told Hari about the band-aid or the panic attack or the onion or the head-catching or the staring. So for all Hari knows, Sung Joon is still a bastard whom Hye Jin wants nothing to do with. Still doesn't excuse Hari from using Hye Jin's identity, but I can't fault her for falling for him because up until this point, she was the only person he was ever nice to.

I'm not sure if it might also be a matter of delicacy. Sometimes we know something intimate about another person (as Hye Jin knows about Sung Joon) but we feel it is not right to tell a 3rd party (Ha Ri). It is possible that Hye Jin may (if she had had the time) have told Ha Ri more about what's happening with Sung Joon, but I cannot fault her if she does not. It was personal and private to her that he gave her an onion, and caught her head and it was private to him that he had a panic attack.

If Ha Ri had been open about liking Sung Joon, it would have been more natural for Hye Jin to tell her more. Or, it could work both ways. Fear of hurting people is a pain in communication too! :)

The panic attack, I agree, is a private matter that even Sung Joon did not tell Hari when she invited herself over to make him rancid vinegar water. But I imagine girlfriends like to squee over swoon-worthy things their crushes do for them and dissect if it means he likes her back. Especially since Hye Jin had no problem sharing Most may be going under in three months, which made me rage since Sung Joon specifically said not to tell anyone.

It all depends about how private of a person you are. I don't go around telling my best friend about how I caught my crush looking at me or how he gave me more attention than usual, not before I reach something tangible with him.
However, if I keep meeting my friend's first love several times after I got to know him thanks to her, I'll probably tell her.

Excellent point. Because of only a few lies, even more are forming. There are too many secrets here and I'm not looking forward to seeing it all blow up. I can see all four of our beloved characters getting hurt and I just hope they'll be able to recover from it. Gahhhhh.

I really, really like Ha Ri.

Hye Jin created this situation, and it would've been fine if Ha Ri was pretending to be pretty much anyone else, or if Sung Joon was a jerk. Instead Ha Ri didn't want to damage Hye Jin's reputation with this guy, and also didn't want to hurt him, knowing how much Hye Jin likes him. And that put her in a position to actually like him herself.

It'll all come crashing down around her, but I'll actually feel pretty bad for her when it does, because Sung Joon seems to like HER - first love be damned, he seems to like the woman who comes over to make sure he's okay. That's not Ha Ri pretending to be Hye Jin, that's 100% Ha Ri going out of her way for him.

Yes, the puzzle piece was too much. Yes, she knows she's lining herself up for trouble. But she started all of this thinking Hye Jin would never, ever see Sung Joon again. It's been a slippery slope, and poor Ha Ri has just been letting herself get carried away.

The best possible outcome here would be that Sung Joon independently decides he likes Original Hye Jin more than HR Hye Jin, before uncovering the secret.

I agree with your opinion. But Im conflicted about HR. One part of me hate that she steals HJ's piece, but at the same time I felt sorry for her. Just like you said, she keeps making bad decisions and that gonna bite her later. Because this is drama, we get to see that HR feels guilty stealing HJ's piece, but in real life, if my friend did that I probably wont forgive her, ever. Since this is a drama, I'll just enjoy the ride.
I do hope the writer wont use the fake-first-love trope for far too long! Because I want to see HJ and HR's friendship just like it used to be, with no stealing!

I was also so dissapointed with Ha Ri this week. I had to pause the episode and yell at the screen for a couple minutes when she pulled out the puzzle piece at dinner. One of the reasons I have been loving this show is we got an amazing friensdship bewteen women, something that is rare in dramaland, especially as one of the primary relationships. Now I just have to hope that the girls can patch things up once all of HaRi's lie come crumbling down, but she will have a lot of atoning to do.

Required fields are marked *

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip! This was a great analysis of the characters!

I too love that the writers gave the first love trope a scientific explanation. And you know what? I completely buy it. Screw fate or whatever. In the beginning, it wasn't like Fate brought them together. He sought her out and found her (and although they end up working in the same place, I'll just call that a coincidence). I like the idea that he's feeling things for Hye-jin hesitantly because he thinks he's not supposed to. I totally understand that I-waited-so-long-for-this-to-happen-how-can-I-abandon-it mentality. And the sad thing is that he actually is getting what he wanted for so long. He just doesn't know it! I loved this storyline in Mujhse Dosti Karoge (Bollywood movie) and I love it here as well.

But anyway. I feel good about where this is heading. I haven't doubted it because I love the premise so much. And our leads are just so adorable together and apart. I've always believed that the simplest way to see chemistry between two characters is to watch how they stare at each other. It's the most basic thing an actor can do, but it's so difficult to do. Park Seo-joon can just stare for days and days. He's so good.

(Can I just mention how pretty awesome it is that they've adopted the word "panty" to mean all underwear in Korea while here in the U.S. it refers to girls' underwear only?)

SJ totally falls for HJ even when she is still ugly (though i still find her pretty) like HJ who loved him when he was fat (but cute),..

I wonder if/how Hye-jin and Ha-ri's friendship will last by the end of this drama? Their friendship was one of the big highlights of the first two weeks' bunch of episodes for me; they were so cute and their interactions were pretty real to life.

I fully sympathized with Ha-ri up till this episode. After watching episode 5, when Ha-ri came to realize the depth of her feelings and planned to cut off Seo-joon before they got out of hand, I was relieved that this love triangle was done with before we were even mid-way! But things regressed rather horribly here. Her deliberately taking the puzzle piece to further win over Seo-joon just made me sick. She's intruding on their cherished memories. It's not only a betrayal of Hye-jin, but extremely unfair to Seo-joon as well. (This is also why I am still sort of iffy with Hye-jin's deceit in the first place, all so she wanted to continue to be "cool" in her first love's eyes.)

I still really love their friendship, so I hope Ha-ri comes clean and apologize to Hye-jin, rather than Hye-jin finding out first, but also that Hye-jin doesn't forgive her so easily.

I agree about the whole situation in the first place (though I love it really). Sung-joon was terribly mean early on and everyone hated him, but even then, I knew the inevitable discovery of both girls' lies crushing him would have me in tears. Good angst.

I do disagree on your point about Hye-jin trying to be "cool." It was more about preserving his memory of her. When they were on the phone and he walked right past her to a more attractive girl, that was a slap in the face. And we know that Sung-joon wouldn't have cared, but in that moment, Hye-jin thought he did care. Again, it was a sweet thing for her to do, but it just wasn't thought-out.

Oh, I love it too, heh. :P The inevitable angst is baked into the plot line itself, I mean. I just usually sympathize wayyy more with party that's deceived.

My understanding of Hye-jin's motivations was that it was one part of her "giving" Seong-joo the pleasure of knowing that his first love is still the same amazing girl in every regard (pretty, rich, accomplished), but also partly for herself, a way of preserving her few last memories before her life went to hell.

I phrased my comment harshly, I guess. :) I think the "cool" thing was mentioned in Ep 1; I'll have to rewatch it.

i agree with everything you said,,
if i were in hye jin's shoes i would rather hiding,.
hye jin is rejected everywhere because of her look,..
so that inferiority complex is there in her
and SJ who does not recognize her the first time they met gives her that fear of rejection as well,..

and for ha-ri, i do not hate her but i do not sympathize with her deed whatever reasons she has,..(lately i keep skipping her scenes, they bore me)
unlike Hye Jin who loves Soong Joon even when he was fat, ugly and friendless,..and that when she was the most popular and beautiful girl
Ha-ri is attracted to him when he turns into a hot guy and disdain him and called him like a pig before.
i don't think she will fall for him if he did not turn into a charming man,..and Song Joon never care about the beautiful her but only the fact that he knows her as Hye Jin, the girl who was with him when no one cared about him,..

Poor Ha-Ri remembers me the story of one of my late father's cousin: she used to be very beautiful (she looked like Elizabeth Taylor when young) but not very bright. Once she asked my father (they where both in their late 20's at that time):

- Pepe (P.P. Pater Putatibus, the name given in the Latin Bible to Saint Joseph, husband of Holy Mary -my late father's first name was José-), I have a suitor who is a Lawyer, is honest, has a good lifestyle, and is talking about marriage...

- Gloria, it sounds really good, and I know he is a good colleague and comes from a very well known and loved family in Maracaibo.

- But Pepe, I have another suitor who is funny, has a good car, is unemployed but I like him more...

- (Facepalming in his imagination) Well, Gloria, then go with him.

Cut to: an old maid in her 70's.

I have this idea that a good man is also an acquired taste for some women, since it is a relationship that usually takes more time to develop, but also run deeper. It is also more difficult since you actually get to know each other and threrefore involves more conflict and communication to get along.

A shallow relationship is way easier and more comfortable. That's why I guess Ha-Ri usually prefers shallow relationships: they are comfortable so they soothes all the bruises and tensions of her family life.

I hope that by knowing a good man, one that loves and accepts Ha-Ri as she is, she will find peace.

By having him besides her she’s getting a new database about what a man she loves SHOULD be. Conflict between both girls is inevitable, but it will not be fatal, since they are more family than friends at this point. Ha-Ri will give in in the end, Hye-Jin will forgive her and Ha-Ri will get a better picture about what she wants in a man.

Shin hyuk is too cute. Siwon is playing him amazingly. Hopefully the drama will get to his storyline soon. I'm curious about his background. Hope his bromance will continue with Sung Joon. Lord knows Sung Joon needs another friend and Shin Hyuk will be the odd ball who will pull him in. Hehe.

I would have a hard time blaming Ha Ri completely. Hye Jin is the one who forced her into that situation, Sung Joon came out of the blue and she had to think fast in the hotel, and then she fell for him.

It would be a bad friend who heard the current story an immediately cut Ha Ri off. Yes, she took the puzzle piece (without knowing the huge emotional story behind it, right? She just knows it's a random piece from an old puzzle) and that was wrong, but Hye Jin made it pretty clear that Song Joon was an ass as an adult and she's not interested in him.

I will be very disappointed if this female friendship breaks up over a convoluted situation involving a guy.

I was already on my last nerve with Ha-ri after ep5, but her actions in this one were so rage-inducing that I am completely done with her. I don't want to see her redeemed/forgiven without a very severe comeuppance, if at all. Agree with all your comments about why her actions are wrong (which I had also said in the last recap's comments, but they apply even more now after her heinous theft of the puzzle piece).

It was painful to see Sung-joon throwing away his Smiley Onion. :(

What I want to see happen is for Hye-jin to realize that she was wrong to lie in the first place, and confess to the original plot, including that it was a one-time thing. Then I want to see them both realize together what Ha-ri has been doing all this time, so she gets blasted from both ends and realizes why what she's done is so wrong and what she has lost.

I hate to say it, but her hateful stepmother was kind of right about her. (She's still hateful though.)

Why would the stepmother be at all right about her? That woman just exists to spew poison at Ha Ri.

If Sung Joon is remotely honest, he'll hear the story and realize he steamrolled Ha Ri in the hotel. Hye Jin will understand that she stranded Ha Ri (between Sung Joon finding her at the hotel and not wanting to talk about him when Ha Ri tried to open up). It's not right that Ha Ri finally decided to go with the lie, but at least she did it because she really, REALLY likes Sung Joon, rather than a sneaky desire to take Hye Jin's place.

Hye Jin left the place vacant. She should accept some responsibility for that.

To be honest I was being kind of spiteful out of my anger at Hari. The woman is awful and I hate her for how she treats her stepdaughter. I was just referring to her comment about how she is now meeting a guy with a false name, but you're right, the woman is poison.

Hmm. I agree that he kind of steamrolled her, but at the same time if she didn't want to expose the lie, she could have told him it was awkward for her to see him at work (as she does later) and then avoid his calls until she had a chance to ask Hye-Jin about it. If she had done that, it would all be on Hye-Jin, who I agree is responsible for instigating the whole thing.

Oh, I don't think Ha Ri gets off scot-free at all - I'm just sympathetic that she's tried a number of times to either tell Hye Jin or boot Sung Joon, and it's just not working out for her.

I sincerely hope she gets the change to explain that she TRIED to come clean a number of times, and never quite made it. Shik Hyun can help her out on that count, maybe, since she enlisted him as fake fiancee and then he saw the horrible soup. And honestly, Shik Hyun seems like someone who would connect those dots and try and set things straight if Hye Jin and Ha Ri were at odds.

This show is the only drama I look forward to each week! So glad it has a great, fast subbing team.

Ep 5 was more funny and enjoyable. I was disappointed in Ha Ri in this episode. But I do get her character. I don't think she has really turned evil against Hye Jin. She knows what she is doing is wrong and she's feeling guilty about it so I think (or hope) she will confess the truth to Hye Jin soon.

I'm glad Hye Jin hasn't gotten a makeover yet, even though Chief Editor Kim is still reminding her here and there. I will be excited about it when it comes eventually, but right now, I'm happy that Sung Joon is slowly falling for her despite the fact that he doesn't know the truth yet.

The thing that I can't wrap my mind around w/ HR is that she's heard about the ass-y things SJ has said to HR. I don't care how sweet he was to me; if a guy treated my bff like crap (even if he was her boss - which raises a WHOLE other set of complications), his swoon-worthiness would plummet in my eyes.

I also fear that HR will do something to (hopefully) inadvertently sabotage HJ and SJ when they're growing closer on their trip. I also really hope that if/when there's a confrontation between the two women, HR doesn't say anything like, "Why would he choose you when he could have me?" Cause that's just … No.

Totally agree. He was terrible to HJ. My problem with HR isn't that she is falling for her friend's first love, but that she is falling in spite of how awful he treated and how miserable he has made her best friend. She assaulted then refused to see some guy who made a disparaging comment about HJ, but because SJ is sweet to her she completely ignores what he's done to HJ and goes after him. HR calls her "wifey"! Where's the loyalty?

Totally agree. Remember that one scene where HJ tells HR how horrible SJ's been to her at work, and she was all like "He didn't seem that bad to me" - yeah, and she's met him all of once at this point. And yet she's dismissing her best friend's experience based on that one brief encounter.

0

Exactly. What HR is doing is UNFORGIVABLE. Even when she was trying to get rid of him, she heard how awful he threaded her best friend -whom she is supposed to love the most in the world *eye roll*-, and yet she didn't stop for a minute to see him differently. On top of that she has managed to fall for him, while he's clearly hang up on past memories with said best friend. I actually liked Ha-ri the most in the beginning, she seemed cool and empathetic. Too bad.
On another note, Ha-ri is the one who noticeably changed so much compared to SJ.

I really find it endearing how he just smiled it away when his car got towed hehe. It reminded me of this one scene in Girl Who Sees Smells. I love Park Seo-joon <3

I also love Shin-hyuk and his Orabeoni-dongssaeng relationship with Hye-jin. I was expecting to hate Ha-ri a lot, but I ended just getting annoyed by what she's done. I cannot accept that she would give that puzzle piece. I hope, for the sake of their friendship, that she realizes this wrong move.

I don't know. The plot's progress is kind of slow, and the characters are not exactly 'human,' but I am thoroughly enjoying this show. It has quite an emotional pull, and I am getting more endeared with Hwang Jung-eum each day.

I also appreciate the direct reaction against the usual Fate-and-destined first love trope through the use of the Zeigarnik Effect. Thank goodness a show is making it a case about love being something you make an effort for instead of relying on abstract stuff that blinds the hopeless, anyway.

Keep improving, Show!

In this episode, Ha Ri has truly tossed Hye Jin under the bus. First, it was the shoes that didn't fit. Now, the missing puzzle piece. That piece belonged to Hye Jin, and she had no right to take it and claimed she had found it. Lies!!!
Ha Ri keeps trying to justify her despicable actions from telling Hye Jin..Later.. Later.. and she keeps finding excuses to postpone the inevitable truth. I think she will never be able to tell the truth because she was even going to make Shin Hyuk pretend to be her fiancee.
It was cute watching Sung Joo begin to like Hye Jin as a person and giving her that onion.... But then he got that that puzzle piece which confirmed in his mind that Ha Ri was HIS Hye Jin. When he threw away the onion, it felt like he was throwing away his feelings for Hye Jin too!!!
Can't wait for next week. Sung Joo and Hye Jin are off together on a trip without the interference of Ha Ri and her tricks.
I don't think that Hye Jin is that unattractive that some BB cream makeup and a more flattering hairdo couldn't fix. Hye Jin has a suitcase of nice clothes on the trip, so maybe her transformation is coming up soon!

I loved the ep, except for the sneezing part. I am not a germaphobe, but what functional adult feels a sneeze coming on and then doesn't make any attempt to cover it--AT ALL---MULTIPLE TIMES even though she had her hands free???? It just seemed like such an awful writing/acting choice. There are ways to have her sneeze in his face and still keep the humor, while being believable and don't make your heroine look like a brainless idiot.
I guess the good thing is it showed that even though he was subjected to her gross ridiculousness, he didn't reject her and treat her badly like he had before.

+10 on the sneezing. I was really turned off by that. Just looking away and covering one's mouth is sooooo basic. How could she just sneeze right up into his face.

He's far more forgiving than I expected him to be. He was so much worse towards her when she was incompetent at work or even before she was given a chance... but on the personal side, her idiocy does not seem to trigger the same reaction. Interesting.

Yeah, I think Seong Joon was only truly angry with her when she was messing up with work since he knows an entire company could go under. That's a lot of stress to deal with and I'd get angry too under all that pressure. But when Hye Jin is just acting silly and kind of dense around him--and it doesn't affect their jobs--he just finds her kind of annoying, and at times, even funny and cute. I really like this; it seems pretty realistic for workplace relationships.

But I could've done without that sneeze too. Blech.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, they could have made the sneezing more realistic and still pull off the gag. Like when she sneezed at Sung Joon. All they had to do was give her something to carry that incapacitated both of her hands so she couldn't cover up. The rest of the sneezing they could just have her turn her head away when she sneezed only to find out too late that there was another person there in her line of fire.

Thanks for the recap !

Siwon is hi-la-ri-ous! I loved the scene where SH took care of SJ! The only thing I'm not clear about is if SH is actually in love with HJ or just seeing her as a good friend/sister.

As for HJ, I wish the show would focus a bit more on her. We got to see SJ, SH and even HR's back stories, but not much about HJ. She used to be a quiet (not shy, just not very loud), astute , self-confident child/pre-teen who even knew to take care of her appearance (for ex: straightening her hair). I think her family lost all their money, then what happened? Why does the show make her into an adukt who now seems easily gullible, who stutters this much when nervous, who sneezes into people's faces (I didn't find it comical at all)./Has she made more efforts to learn about The Most? What happened to her dream of becoming a writer? I want to know about her more!

I freaking LOVE Siwon in this show, and I honestly could care less for Sung Joon. I love Hari, I love Hyejin, and Siwon's character, but Sung Joon is so ehhh. Also, these sudden burgeoning feelings for real Hye jin seems a bit contrived for me. Idk. I don't really like Sung Joon at all.

I think this recap simplifies the complexity that is Hari. I particularly enjoy this show because she is made to be a well-rounded, complex, and empathetic character--instead of an easy "other woman" trope. I love that she balances her feelings of being a good friend, but also the fact that she is experiencing an earnest, sincere relationship for the first time. I really like her character.

The fact that HR went there with the puzzle piece surprising. It was such an actively deceitful move. I'm upset, but it also makes her situation somehow sadder. She's clinging to something that's, in a way, less real than the casual relationships that she's used to. The actual emptiness of their relationship was made clear when, despite having doubts, SJ threw that onion in the trash just because HR showed proof that she was the real HJ. He really doesn't have any strong feeling or connection to her as herself.

*I didn't notice the rain motif, but I'll be looking out for it in future episodes now.

Required fields are marked *

@ lolabeans

I was thinking more of the umbrella motif.

As kids, Hye Jin said she would be Sung Joon's umbrella and she held the jacket over their heads. SJ responded that the next time, he would be sure to be her umbrella too... (but as an adult he was the one to cause the bad weather as far as I could tell in the first few episodes).

He gives young Hye Jin the hiding girl jigsaw piece with the umbrella drawn behind it, maybe as a sign that they can complete that puzzle together or it can only be completed when they are together (so sweet).

He gives adult 'Hye Jin' the umbrella (with the Country Dance painted on it) but sees the real Hye Jin using it. It is real Hye Jin's use of her jacket to cover them in the rain that brings him out of the panic.

Sung Joon needs to find out who has been the real umbrella towards him in times of stress or bad weather. The angst that's going to be played out now is to delay the reveal of who this is.

So I'm waiting for more rainy weather and more occasions for Hye Jin to be his umbrella. I hope it will be a barrel of laughs despite the frustration of his never quite asking her or knowing it's her.

The problem with HR is she is incredibly selfish, she only can only see things from her perspective she doesn't try to empathise or think things from the other people's view, she knows what she's doing is wrong but because she wants this and wants to feel this way she is carelessly pursuing it and thinking she will get away with it to. If she really thought it through she would realise that it's not going to end cleanly even if Sung Joo goes back to America, that doesn't mean he's going to leave her behind or that he won't come back to korea again, so many things will go wrong with her plan but she just doesn't care.

I'm not hugely worried though because I think like every other shallow relationship HR has had it won't end well for her, Sung Joo will turn away from her I just hope she doesn't go further and get too interfering with Sung Joo and HJ like by showing up on the trip.

Those were my fave scenes, followed closely by Shin Hyuk dripping porridge into Sung Joon. :)

Among the relationships, even if all else have their ups and downs, I want this bromance to thrive. It's about time that Sung Joon figures out he does not just need a first love relationship, but just a bunch of normal, human relationships in his lonely world... and lots of occasions of eating together, real food, you know? ... but being fed by 'Hye Jin's oppa' is a great start!

You're so right. I also don't think Hye-jin will be too upset because in a way, she is doing the same thing to Sung-joon. I hope the truth does come from her and not from some overheard conversation.

I feel like Hari resonates with me because she's the character I often have within me. If my life was laid out in front of me as drama scenes, I would be like her. Good intentions, genuine love, and moments of charm mixed with circumstances, secret jealousies, loneliness, and a will to survive.

I wouldn't have stolen the puzzle piece, but I may have imagined it.

The drama is going in the right track. The special dream-like quality of Episode 1 is gone, unfortunately, but I'm comfortable with considering it like a prologue or a prequel. The metaphors were beautiful there, I just wish they had put a bit more thought into Hari's shoes.

I do like how commenters have pointed out Siwon's character is actually quite selfish too, though it's covered up by jokes. Not a bad guy, just enough to make him human, even though he's very wacky.

It really does highlight how sweet our heroine is. She really does respect boundaries (when her head is screwed on properly and she's not panicking/screaming too much), while still helping in ways she can.

Absolutely in LOVE with Shin Hyuk. He keeps me laughing the whole time he's on screen. This drama wouldn't be nearly as funny without his character and choi si won plays him PERFECTLY! I love it.

I can't believe Ha Ri did what she did. I could completely understand her falling for Sung Joon, but to actually use that puzzle piece? That crossed the line. I'd forgive a friend for falling for him like she did, but it'd be hard for me to forgive a friend for using that puzzle piece. The trust would be really shaken up after that.

I'm excited to see Sung Joon starting to soften up to Hye Jin. Let the cute antics roll!

Great job in the analysis of this episode. I was getting frustrated at the earlier episodes but episode 6 finally gave me some crumbs of delight. I have re-watched the good parts several times- this is unusual for me, but I became obsessed with this episode and your deconstructing of it was right on and much appreciated. I can't wait to ep.7
I am happy I can "hate" the best friend after what she did with the puzzle piece. She was too perfect for my taste earlier. I also resented her for not helping her best friend look more presentable when she obviously knows how to dress and wear make up.

I love it! I am so happy about the scientific approach to this whole situation and may Sungjoon see it that way as well until the end. I am glad to see that this drama is moving away from the whole fated/first love trope. It will be nice and much better if he finds himself falling for the real Hyejin because of who she is. Being the real Hyejin will only be a bonus. (Oh boy I cannot wait to see his reaction when he finds out!) This way it will be genuinely about two adults who fell for each other because of who they are. I sincerely hope the drama will continue in this direction.

So much cuteness!! Though my heart was broken into million pieces when he threw away his onion! Why?? The business trip will be so interesting! hehe! And since Hyejin took Reporter Cha's luggage with all her clothes, will we see Hyejin wearing something different... a bit of transformation perhaps? Not that it is very important because she is pretty and cute and unique in her own way and style, but it will be interesting to see.

Cannot wait for new episodes!

I love how dorky Sung Joon is with his crush on Hye Jin! It actually makes Hye Jin's ridiculous antics seem, well, they're still pretty embarassing but at least they have that in common.

Siwon is amazing as usual. He has fantastic chemistry with all the 3 mains. I wish we'd give Ha Ri's family drama a break and just spend whole episodes with different combinations of the 4 leads.

I feel like they've milked Ha Ri's sad family enough to make us not outright hate her for her puzzle betrayal (I actually love Ha Ri - but I don't care about her family). And as to the betrayal - Damn you Ha Ri! I feel really sorry for her actually, even while being do disappointed. By taking that puzzle piece Ha Ri has doomed her own feelings for Sung Joon. We all know that she loves Hye Jin too much to be able to live with herself after that betrayal. I think if she'd come clean to Hye Jin about her secret relationship with Sung Joon and asked for her blessing with the relationship she would have had a chance. Hye Jin has too little self confidence to stand in her way. In a weird way I think Ha Ri wouldn't have been able to ask that of Hye Jin precisely because she would know that Hye Jin would never be able to say no.

I love where we're going with the story. Sung Joon and Hye Jin on an MT! eee! Siwon no doubt being the first to connect all the dots! eee! Ha Ri working her shit out. I finally feel like all the cringing is coming to an end and this show is coming into its own.

Well done to the writers, I really thought they were messing this up. This show has yet to show me the delights that Twenty Again has given us but it might get there.

Agree with others that I don't hate Ha Ri, but at the same time, I have a mean wish that she doesn't get Shin Hyuk in the end. I know this is terrible but why does she get awesome, quirky, good looking and 99% secret chaebol??? (He's not confirmed to be the CEOs son, right? Just obviously rich?) And who does the lead get? Only awesome to one person, not chaebol, oblivious guy who thinks being a hard ass is somehow motivating. Also a hypocrite who seems to have forgotten how he must have felt as a kid being picked on.

Second, I don't know why I never thought of Shin Hyuk as being the mystery writer. For some reason I thought it was the crazy "Italian" editor or chief, haha! I thought it'd be great if that office girl tried to woo the young guy, got wind Shin Hyuk is secretly rich, changed affections, and then it was revealed the young guy was the nephew and knew for sure the mystery writer was a Korean ahjumma (his aunt).

1) That horrible moment when your favorite character ruins the show by giving the worst advice ever! "As long as he's not married or underage, go for it!" Really Shin-Hyuk? There was hope for Hari until this moment. Of course, there's still hope for her but it's gonna take so much more angst to bring her back at this point and I really just want to watch her and Hye Jin be bestows for the rest of the series.

2) I love how Hari literally has Metaphor Shoes that she uses exclusively for chasing her forbidden fruit. It's the dumbest thing but, considering how heavy handed Dramas are with their metaphorical objects, it's kind of refreshing that she's all "Yep, these pretty yet I'll-fitting shoes totally represent my misplaced feelings for Sung Joon"

3) Have I mentioned that Siwon is WINNING this show? I totally want one if him. He can wear my robe all he wants as long as he calls me Noona and does that little butt shake.

4) I think the show is trying to hint that Shin Hyuk is the mystery writer but I say that's a misdirection. My money is on it being Hari's long lost mom. But I think Shin Hyuk is connected in some way to her. Maybe he's even her son (of she has an outside child it would explain why stepmom is always implying that Hari inherited questionable morals). Of course, if that's the case, thus Drama becomes a direct rip off of the awkward Love Polygon in Fated To Love You.

5) I should mention I had a blast watching this weeks episodes. So glad that thus show is finding it's footing.

Oh my…the very little drama in this drama is getting intense now. I’m totally fine with Hari falling for SJ and feeling conflicted about it in ep 5. But what she did in ep 6 is not cool. Stealing the puzzle and giving it to SJ while he’s in doubt if she really is his first love. Not cool. At least, now Hari is so upset because she knows that she’s betrayed HJ.

And this drama will go oh-so-genetic romcom drama from here on.

SJ and HJ fall for each other during the business trip where nobody does anything for the sake of work. SJ will love HJ for who she really is while being clueless as ever. He loves the present her not her past is the whole idea of this drama i guess.

Hari’s plan is to try to come clean to SJ about her real identity before confessing to HJ. But in drama land, this common kind of plan never works. SJ will somehow know the truth. At that time, SJ and HJ are in love already. So they get one or two episodes of angst where SJ gets angry/sad/confused; Hari is devastated bcs she loses her bestfriend and her love interest; HJ get super upset bcs the mess she initiated for all her loved ones. This is when the real hero of this drama - Shin Huyk comes in and saves the day by being the lovely considerate goofball. He will pick up the pieces of Hari, show her that he’s the one for her. They’re the perfect match. Both are rich, trying hard to live their lives out of their super wealthy families. Hari will fall for his casual but warm personality. HJ will see that HR is fine now with SH so she could move on with SJ too. And they live happily ever after as two couple showed in the teaser. The end.

There would be some minor drama story going along the way. Exhibit A: Hari’s sad family story. Exhibit B: SJ’s eating disorder. Exhibit C: Most rises to be the best fashion magazine in Korea to avoid being shut down. Exhibit D: the makeover that everyone has been waiting for from HJ. And so on so on…

Back to ep 6. Some highlight for me are: All time Shin Huyk on screen; the Most-like-stumble at the desk of Most chief adjuma; all Goo Joon Hee outfits; Park Seo Joon looking fine while sleeping on the couch; and ,thank God, HJ doesn’t scream/panic everytime she’s next to SJ anymore. Downtime are: the smiley onion-i’m sorry i’m not into that kind of cute; HJ doesn’t wear a mask while she’s the one who is sick and lastly Hari’s step mom. Seriously, Hari literally begs her not to say anything in front of SJ. But the bitch just goes ahead and makes her Hari’s life more miserable.

Wow that’s a long comment ^^

6) I think it's kind of sucky for Sung Joon to expect Hye Jin/Hari to be the same person he knew as a pre-teen. I her that these are supposed to be hints to him that something isn't right but, for him to be that level of disappointed that she changed her mind about rain or changed the way she reacts to a green light seems like it would place a lot of unfair pressure on even the real Hye Jin. Also, the fact that it's the qualities in Hye Jin that intersect with his childhood memories that are drawing him to her kind of undermines the whole "There's no fate in first-love" argument.

I think it's REALLY sucky for Hye Jin to go around sneezing on everything and everybody like that! Gross and inconsiderate! I didn't enjoy that scene at all. Her coworkers were totally right to ostracize her and I'm mad that she still didn't get the hint.

YES!!!
He wants her to remain puerile and exactly like her childhood self--and for him to be disappointed? Is, yes, disconcerting. This is the reason why I don't really like Sung Joon. He seems delusional. This is kind of my issue with the Show because, although they seem to argue against "fate" and want the characters to genuinely come to understand and empathize and love each other--there is still that idea that he's looking for the child-Hyejin in adult-Hyejin.
Idk. It's insincere, immature, and unfair.

So much cute, so much sweet *squeee* Hooray for the panty-sharing bromance :D Up until this episode, loving the show coz none of the characters is hateable (except maybe the stepmom, ugh); still has great hope for Ha Ri to come back into the light.
Not sure about the plot about the mystery writer; thought Shin Hyuk is supposed to be chaebol? Is a bit too much for him to be both. Would love it for a twist if the real chaebol is the sunbae with the ruler, haha.
Anyway, the show got a rom-com, feel good movie vibe... so shud be prepared for hefty angst in the later episodes right? *sigh*

love this drama! sweet and funny and full of eye candy! Both the male leads are cute altho CSW is too cool for school, as always! Loved Park Seo Joon and Hwang Jung Eum as (fake) siblings in Kill Me Heal Me. PSJ is once more playing the angst filled Bf here but he proves once again that he can do humour! HJE isn't one of the best actresses at physical comedy but she certainly tries very hard! and she always manages to layer her madcapness with vulnerability . This story is trite but it clips along steadily and hits all the right buttons with its sizzling choice of cast, sweet moments, whacky characters from The Most editorial team and picturesque settings. also like that the characters all struggle with their issues. Ha ri is self indulgent but not malicious and perhaps it is true that "all's fair in love and war"? After all, HJ as good as delivered SJ to HR's doorsteps?

I like your comment that Hye-jin delivered Sung-joon to Ha-ri! I almost forgot that part when watching Ha-ri stole the puzzle piece. It all started from that moment, right?

So lesson here is the truth is still better in the long run, no matter how ugly you think the truth is! :D

I was seriously disappointed when Ha-ri stole that puzzle piece and in the end she wasn't even happy about it. I really really hope she finds the courage to come clean about this whole lying act, otherwise she will lose important people and not even gain the person she thought she wanted! It's wonderful to meet a man who cares for you but he should cares about the real you, not someone you pretend to be. And really, in the end, does Ha-ri think that Sung-joon will fill her loneliness? I think she need to have a long, hard look at her life and make some better choices!

I don't understand why people are blaming Hye Jin that she forced Ha Ri into this situation.
Yes Hye jin initially made Ha Ri meet Sung Joon but that was just for that one meeting. Hye Jin did not ask Ha Ri to start liking him or to not tell her how the situation progressed.
I realise Hye jin complained that Sung joon was an ass but she did not even know Ha Ri was still in contact with him so who knows how she would've reacted.
It doesn't matter how lonely Ha Ri is in this situation because friends don't behave like him and lying by omission is still a lie but stealing that puzzle piece to convince Sung Joon was deliberate especially since she knows its wrong.
I like Ha Ri but what is wrong is wrong especially to a best friend she considers better than sister.

Exactly my point.
First of all, Ha-Ri is a pretty, smart girl. I refuse to believe she hasn't had the chance to meet one decent fellow in her life so far. She keeps company with sleazy, slimy men because so far she has never wanted to have a serious relation with anybody. She essentially shielded herself from anymore heartbreak or unwanted scars by doing that. They get what they want and so does she. She is an adult and she knows better and yet she does what she does.
Secondly, she wasn't forced to lie, she agreed to help a friend who is essentially her family and actually cares about her perhaps more than her own father/mother/step-mother. And Hye Jin didn't ask her to go on with it on her behalf, she decided to do that on her own. Yes, Hye Jin started it but Ha-Ri is stretching it on her own, for her own selfish reasons and it will certainly blow up at some point. The collateral damage will be huge and she knows it, yet decided it was in her best interest. Think carefully, why is she lying like that?? Its simple, so that Sung Joon will start liking her regardless of the name to the point that the revelation won't be enough for him to go away from her. That's her only hope in this whole situation. What happens if she succeeds, Hye-Jin and her friendship will be over forever and Hye-Jin will never get the chance to be friends or more than friends with Sung Joon regardless of her intention. In reality, I really wouldn't be friends with somebody like Ha-Ri, period. I hope when the truth comes out, Hye-Jin doesn't let her get away with it. Ha-Ri already has made a big decision about her priorities in life so should Hye-Jin. She decided it was best to risk her friendship with Hye Jin for somebody she has just met a while ago, so its done. Really, hoping Hye-Jin doesn't decide to become some sort of overly kind sacrificial lamb for her sake, its unreal and it is not worth it.
