She Was Pretty: Episode 12

Nearly every relationship in our story is marked by a shift, to wildly differing results. Luckily all four of our main players are ready to be honest and discuss their issues, which helps, though the honesty can be sometimes painful. But better a painful truth than false hope — and sometimes watching the person you love be happy, even with someone else, can be fulfilling in its own right.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Hye-jin runs through the airport looking for Ha-ri, collapsing in tears when her best friend is nowhere to be found. She collects herself and sits staring at Ha-ri’s to-do list, not even registering when Ha-ri just casually walks past her.

Hye-jin is thrilled, but Ha-ri seems oddly mystified by her friend finding her here. Hye-jin yell-sobs at her for leaving her without saying goodbye, but Ha-ri is all, Where am I going? She just came to see her mother off to Japan — she’s not going anywhere. Why would she leave after doing something so awful to Hye-jin? She has to stay and make up for her behavior.

Back at home Ha-ri tells Hye-jin that after talking to her mom, she now understands why she left her. All of her things are gone because she decided after what she did with Sung-joon that she’s immature. So she cut up her credit card, got rid of all the things her father handed to her, and deleted all the random men from her phone. She even quit her job, which her father got for her.

She admits that, because she always had things given to her without effort, she got greedy about something that didn’t belong to her. She apologizes sincerely to Hye-jin, who easily accepts her apology.

Sung-joon wakes in the office with a start, working late after having spoken to his US contact, who isn’t happy that the magazine only came up to second place. Nothing less than first place will do, and they have one more chance or Most Korea is done for. They’re really putting the pressure on him to make it happen.

Ha-ri tells Hye-jin that she plans to take some time off, even though the hotel seems to want her back. Hye-jin gets a text that Sung-joon is nearby, asking her to come out, but for some reason she tells Ha-ri that she’s running to the store. Aww, and you guys were doing so well with the honesty.

She meets Sung-joon in the park, who tells her to wait ten seconds, then just stares at her. He’s ready to go after that, saying that he only wanted to see her and get energized. Hye-jin senses something is off, asking if it’s worth it to wear himself out to make Most first. But Sung-joon says with a brave smile that it’s not just about him, admitting that he feels responsible for the Most team members, too.

Hye-jin complains that it’s too hard to do by himself, so Sung-joon asks for a hug. He immediately chastises himself for pressuring her when he said he wouldn’t, and leaves with a smile — though Hye-jin looks unsettled.

When Sung-joon gets home, it’s a minute before he notices a smiling and mostly-naked Shin-hyuk is already there, having used his shower. He hilariously falls right off the couch when he finds himself face-to-abs with Shin-hyuk, and he’s so startled he can’t even form a complete sentence. Rewind, replay!

Shin-hyuk even ordered delivery, but when he turns to answer the door his towel falls off, giving Sung-joon an unwanted eyeful. Shin-hyuk apologizes for shocking him so badly, then giggles to himself. This is the best thing ever.

Later when everyone is dressed again, Shin-hyuk brings up his real reason for being here — his two days off have given him some great ideas for the magazine. Sung-joon asks if this means he’s coming back, and Shin-hyuk confirms it. Hooray!

But when Sung-joon looks through Shin-hyuk’s ideas, he has a reason to nix or alter every one. Shin-hyuk marvels at his vast knowledge, but Sung-joon only asks why he’s changed his mind about leaving. Shin-hyuk says he got motivated when he heard the magazine might be shut down, which makes it seem fun, like a game. He has no intention of quitting without even trying.

On his way out, Shin-hyuk catches sight of Sung-joon’s Onion Head, cocks an eyebrow and gives it an encouraging smile, then goes. Cute. On his way home he calls whoever-it-is that he speaks to in English and says that he can’t make it this time, that something’s come up. Whoever it is, he seems to feel warmly towards them, telling them he misses them.

Ha-ri fusses over Hye-jin on her way to work in the morning, making sure she looks nice. Shin-hyuk pulls up next to Hye-jin’s bus on his motorcycle and smiles at her, and meets her at the crosswalk. He smiles at her sweetly while she bops to music on her MP3 player, then knocks her knee out from under her. Back to his old self, I see.

She squeals to hear that he’s back, and he does a little happy dance for her — but he’s sobered to think that she doesn’t know the real reason he left. Hye-jin flounders, and he can’t resist laughing at her discomfort… then admits it’s true that he left because he was rejected. But he yells that it’s fun again, and heads into the building.

Hye-jin asks why it’s fun again, but he just answers that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. The entire Most team greet him with excitement and hugs, then they all smack him for leaving in the first place. Even Sung-joon, watching from his office, smiles as he gripes that it will be getting noisy again.

They get right back to work, discussing a fashionista named Leonard Kim that they’re trying to land for a featured interview. Unfortunately, he never gives interviews so they want to go with their second choice — but Shin-hyuk says they should go for it and take the risk. Sung-joon also thinks they should keep trying, and he and Shin-hyuk are suddenly in complete sync as they give a tandem pep talk.

Sung-joon startles everyone with a sudden nosebleed, and Shin-hyuk hilariously screams like a little girl and runs for cover. Sung-joon waves off everyone’s concern, but Hye-jin can’t stop herself from shooting him glares through his office window. She knows he’s overtired, and he looks pale.

She hovers when she brings him the meeting notes, worried about him, but he swears he’s okay. He even teases her by pretending to pick up his desk to prove it, hee. He says softly that it’s nice that she worries about him, which makes her go all formal on him. Poor guy, happens every time. He’s disappointed, but awww, she left a note on his tea that it’s good for nosebleeds.

Joon-woo texts Seul to invite her to their spicy noodle place for dinner, but she turns him down claiming not to feel well. He immediately runs to her in person, worried that she’s ill, and she has to internally steel herself not to flutter at his attention. Give up girl, he’s adorable and you’re sunk.

When Reporter Cha has to postpone her meeting with Hye-jin regarding her fairy tale article, Shin-hyuk is quick on the draw to volunteer to read it for her. Hye-jin is nervous around him so he flips a coin to decide, but this time when he wins with heads, she screams that he swore that was tails last time. But he’s serious as he gives her some tips on writing, and she soaks it all in like a sponge.

He basks in her admiration, musing that she must find his knowledge and professionalism very sexy, making her nervous again. But he says he hasn’t shown her what kind of man he is yet, repeating that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. She tries to let him down easy but unfortunately, he deliberately misinterprets her words as saying that she likes him.

Okay, Joon-woo is the cutest thing ever — he ran to the store to buy a thermometer and just about every kind of medicine for whatever might be ailing Seul. He leaves for a meeting and she wails at how nice and lovable he is.

Later that day, Hye-jin notices Sung-joon in his office with the lights off and his head down, cringing every time the staff holler at a game they’re playing. She gives them her credit card and bustles them off to eat, her treat, and relaxes when Sung-joon settles down to sleep.

She nearly attacks Chief Editor Kim when she wanders in singing opera, but it works and Sung-joon doesn’t wake. She sneaks into his office to cover him with a blanket, which Shin-hyuk witnesses, and droops. When she comes out, he grabs her to do something fun, and takes her for coffee.

The barista calls Hye-jin Shin-hyuk’s girlfriend, but he tells her, “She’s not my girlfriend… yet.” Hye-jin determines to be honest and tells him she doesn’t like him that way, but Shin-hyuk is pretty stubborn and insists on misunderstanding her. He makes her laugh with stupid faces, as though delaying the inevitable will make it not true.

Hye-jin gets home that night to find Ha-ri having pizza with Hye-rin, and she overhears Hye-rin tell Ha-ri that there’s a man chasing her sister. She’s horrified when Hye-rin laughs at her playing hard to get, and says that that oppa must have bad eyes. She tries to get Hye-rin to stop talking about Sung-joon by shoving food in her mouth, but of course that doesn’t work.

Later Ha-ri surprises Hye-jin with the new shoes she promised, a gorgeous pair of silver heels. Hye-jin turns them down, saying they’re too pretty and more Ha-ri’s style, but Ha-ri reminds her of a saying — good shoes will take you good places. She entreats her to take the shoes, and go where she wants to go.

Ha-ri warns Hye-jin to be careful at first, because it will feel uncomfortable, though soon they’ll be so comfortable she won’t even notice them. But she’s not talking about shoes anymore, though Hye-jin is so dense she has to spell it out: “Go to Sung-joon!”

Hye-jin insists she’s fine being just friends with him, but Ha-ri knows that he’s the kind of person whose heart went to Hye-jin even when Ha-ri tried to hold him. Waiting for her will be hard for him. Ha-ri says she’s not lying about being okay anymore, that she really is okay, so Hye-jin can go be with him.

Sung-joon works late into the night, then wanders past Hye-jin’s place again. He starts to call her but her lights are out, so he contents himself with just looking. Meanwhile she’s contemplating the shoes, and remembering his promise not to push her as long as she doesn’t run away. Sung-joon spends a long time hanging around outside, staring at her window and coughing loudly, just in case. Just when he gives up, Hye-jin turns her light on and opens the window, but they miss each other.

Sung-joon walks past a small store where he once watched Hye-jin talking to the resident dog, Princess, and stops for a little canine conversation. He tells Princess that waiting is harder than he thought. He goes home to mope at Onion Head, looking deeply lonely and tired.

In the morning, Hye-jin puts on her new shoes and steels herself for her day. She says hello to Princess and notices she’s wearing a jaunty new scarf… and realizes that Sung-joon was here recently. She tells Princess that she’s not going to run away anymore, and heads to work.

Ha-ri finds her at the bus stop and offers her once last ride — she’s selling the car. She sends Hye-jin to work with a double thumbs-up and yells that the shoes look great on her.

Sung-joon isn’t at work, having come in for an early meeting then left again, saying he had another meeting to go to. Hye-jin snatches up his scarf and runs out, but he gets in the elevator before she catches up.

Jon-woo brings everyone coffee and mentions seeing the photographer that Sung-joon’s meeting at the coffee shop, so Hye-jin runs out again. But she’s just missed Sung-joon again, so she zooms back outside — just as Sung-joon leaves in his car. ARGH. Back in the office Hye-jin hears Reporter Cha talking to Sung-joon on the phone, reminded that he’s going to Jeju Island and that he’ll be back tonight after six.

Later, Shin-hyuk finds Hye-jin asleep in the meeting room, and sits to watch her. He softly whispers, “Jackson. Look at me, too.”

Poong-ho asks Hye-jin to get something from Sung-joon’s office, and in the pile of folders on his desk, she finds a sketchbook with a picture he’s drawn. It’s of her, tasting the seaweed on the beach from their business trip. And another, with the bandaid stuck to her lips when he had to help her with her injured finger. The entire sketchbook is filled with drawings of her cute and embarrassing moments, and Hye-jin tears up looking at them. It’s telling, that she looks absolutely gorgeous in every sketch.

She’s too distracted to work and can only stare at his scarf and pine, but she finally comes to a decision and jumps up. She grabs the sketchbook and runs out, full of anticipation. She waits at the airport for Sung-joon to come back, and holds up the sketchbook where she’s written, “Welcome Ji Sung-joon.” But she was so busy writing the message, she didn’t see that he’s already gone.

On his way out of the airport, Sung-joon nearly collapses, barely catching himself on the door. He’s dizzy and exhausted and it finally catches up to him — he passes out, while Hye-jin waits inside.

When he doesn’t show, Hye-jin grows worried and heads back to the Most office, where she finds out from Reporter Cha about Sung-joon’s collapse. She runs right past Shin-hyuk, who follows her out and offers her a ride, even when she says she’s going to Sung-joon.

He takes her to the hospital and sends her in, telling her it’s okay when she tries to apologize. She feels bad for doing this to him, saying that he’s a good person and kind, and that being with him is fun. He stops her, calling her “my kind-hearted Jackson,” and offers to flip one last coin — heads and he walks away, tails and he holds onto her so she can’t leave.

He flips the coin and catches it, but stops to look at Hye-jin, standing with tears in her eyes. He puts the coin away and tells her to go. He thanks her for hesitating, as his eyes go red and he looks like he’s fighting tears. After Hye-jin runs in, he pulls out the coin, and his face finally crumples as he sees that it would have been heads after all.

Hye-jin finds Sung-joon in his room, asleep and pale. She reaches out to touch his hair, which rouses him just enough to pull her down and onto the bed with him. He opens his eyes and asks weakly if she was worried, but she says no… she came to give him that hug.

Hye-jin hugs him for a long time, her tears falling and trailing down his face, then she pulls back and they lay there, staring into each other’s eyes. And then Sung-joon can’t wait anymore, and he kisses her.

COMMENTS

Well, it’s about time! And what a sweet moment for both of them, with Hye-jin coming to support Sung-joon just when he needs her the most. She’s always watched over him and taken care of him from the background, even before he knew who she was, and this is just an extension of that. The one thing he’s needed from her, for some time now, was just a simple hug — but it meant so much more to both of them than just a hug. It would mean that she was accepting him and his feelings, and admitting that she returns them, and that’s a big step for Hye-jin. She’s never doubted that she cares for him, but making it official has been frightening for her on several levels.

So it’s wonderful that Hye-jin came to Sung-joon all on her own, without pressure or manhandling from him, as so many drama heroes are wont to do. He’d promised to wait for her, even though the poor man has been waiting most of his life, and he actually followed through and let her come on her own time. I love that about Sung-joon — yeah, he can get ugly in the face of professional pressure, but once he makes a promise, he keeps it. From the moment he started feeling something for Hye-jin, he’s never been anything but kind and gentle with her, and even more so now that he knows she’s his Hye-jin. I’m willing to forgive his early slip-ups considering the pridigious pressure he’s under from his mysterious American employer, and the fact that Hye-jin was pretty useless when he first met her. But they’ve both changed, and it’s obvious how precious he considers her, so I’m considering that water under the bridge.

In the other direction, Ha-ri’s revelation and attempts to change her life are really impressive. It takes a lot to give up an easy life and start fresh, but she did it without heistation. It shows that she was more horrified by her behavior in pretending to be Hye-jin than anyone else, and I respect that she had a serious talk with herself and decided to do something about it. And the thing is, Ha-ri laready has everything she needs to be successful in her own right. She’s smart, capable, and clearly a hard worker as evidenced by the accolades she was given at the hotel. Even without her beauty on top of everything else, she’s completely equipped to take care of herself, and do it well. She doesn’t need Daddy’s money or connections, and it’s good to see her realize that and strike out on her own. Not to mention, how happy-making it is to see her truly and sincerely cheer on Hye-jin with Sung-joon… and now that she’s getting her life in order, her own love story will come soon enough.

Shin-hyuk, on the other hand, became really frustrating this episode. I get that he’s a free spirit and kids around a lot, but using that to keep Hye-jin off-balance and confused isn’t cool. She was trying so hard to finally be honest with him and he wouldn’t let her, which came off not so cute anymore, and bordering on disrespectful. Making a girl laugh with dumb walrus impressions isn’t how you get her to like you… not past middle school, anyway. And he knows about Hye-jin and Sung-joon’s past together, and about how they feel now, so to see him continue to try to get in the middle of that is maddening. He needs to take a note from Ha-ri’s page and do a little growing up before he’s ready to date anyone. At least he let her go with grace when it mattered, and he saw with his own eyes how much she cares for Sung-joon.

But I’m happy to finally see Hye-jin getting her confidence back and believing that she’s worthy of love. I think her (perceived) looks held her back because of the judgment she received from society, but all she ever needed, more than a makeover, was confidence. Sung-joon certainly didn’t care how she looked, and all she really needed was just to look a bit more professional at work. Now that she has, and shown that she’s a valuable and valued worker, it’s good to see the confidence coming along with it. With that confidence she can finally be with the man she loves, and move forward with her life.

I love, love that "I came to hug you" is veiled speech for "I want to be with you." Especially knowing how long Sung Joon had been waiting for Hye Jin's hug. Still, even with our first kiss today, my favorite scene belongs to Shin Hyuk letting go. The tears. I expected him to show her the coin and lie about it not being tails again. I am so, so grateful Hye Jin gave him the time he deserved. Even though she was worried out of her mind about Sung Joon and wanted nothing more than to rush to his bedside, she hated abandoning Shin Hyuk. She cried and apologized and hesitated, and I love her for that. Being so considerate of his feelings.

I choked up when Hari said, "Where would I go after doing something so terrible to you?" I am overjoyed the girls made up quickly, and "Wifey" is back. More yeomance and bromance please. It was adorable how Sung Joon and Shin Hyuk finished each other's sentences. They are so in sync now in their quest to save Most. Can't they just lounge around Sung Joon's apartment in nothing but American panties and compare six packs?

I enjoyed this episode, but I feel sorry for the She Was Pretty cast and crew. Sure, the writers are to blame for last episode's noble idiocy, but MBC sabotaged their own show by choosing to air the baseball game. We would have easily forgiven frustrating Episode 11 as long as our OTP got together in Episode 12, but having to stew over one week of unnecessary angst ended last week on a low note. Especially since Episode 10's cliffhanger was the ultimate climax. This episode's kiss is how this week should have ended to make us anticipate the cute next week. Alas, what's done is done. Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

10000000% agree. Shin Hyuk's reaction to the coin flip tore my heat into tiny little pieces. I love that it was the firdt time he let her win and he was willing to make a sacrifice for it. Ahhhhhhhh as much as I love Sung Joon and Hye Jin, I have big-time second lea syndrome with Shin Hyuk.

I really couldn't see when that scene with Shin Hyuk was happening. I hurt so much for him and how he let her go, especially when the coin was *tails.* I'm still hoping that that means something. This is the worst case of second-lead syndrome I have ever had.

That pillow arrangement on the hospital scene just feels NOT right... It seems SJ had different pillow while talking to HJ, but it turned out to be one only while they're hugging... confusing...

Yeah, and I thought my eyes were too tired from binge-watching ep 10 - 13 and started playing tricks on me! LOL!
That pillow seemed too small for two when HJ stood beside his bed, and when SJ pulled her to his side, her head was almost tipping over the edge of the pillow. But when the camera only showed HJ's face, the pillow magically seemed larger (her head not in the edge anymore)! While when it's only SJ on camera, seemed like he has one pillow all for himself. Really distracting! If only they weren't kissing and all lovey-dovey...and that soundtrack is already stuck in my head! In a good way :-D I love that song!

This is the best show ever…

Love the resilient friendship between Hye-Jin and Ha-Ri. When do you see girlfriends sticking together even when they fall for the same man? Their bond is so much stronger than real-life sisters!

And yes, Choi Siwon going shirtless. Thank you show, for showing that. I nearly fell off my chair when the towel drop off revealing his sexy legs; the look on Shin-Hyuk’s face when he turn to talk to Sung-Joon – priceless. How about a scene where both men go shirtless?

Love Sung-Joon’s patience for Hye-Jin and Shin-Hyuk willingness to let Hye-Jin go. The show is making them too sweet that I don’t think we can find men like them in real-life. Lol.

likewise, i think it's because we're so adapted to his uppity happy go lucky side that it's a bit more heart-wrenching when he's actually fighting back his own emotions of, "trying" to play it off and be cool about it ;__;

I agree. I don't think he was trying to keep Hye-ri off balance, I think he's struggling to let go and falling back on his wacky antics (as a friend). He's sort of telling himself he has a chance still just to ease the rejection pain and keep functioning even while he knows he doesn't have a chance. It's really difficult to be friends with someone you're in love with, it's really better to just go cold turkey and cut them off at least for a year or two. But given they're sort of trapped in this foxhole of a situation with the magazine... I think he's doing ok.

"I don’t think he was trying to keep Hye-ri off balance" - oh for sure, i think it was his own way of handling the rejection. which is why i adored his parting with hye-jin in the end. i never wanted shin-hyuk to become the overly clingy second lead because it wouldn't feel like his character you know.

Whenever he gets extra happy like that, I really feel bad for him because I know it's how he covers up his pain. He plasters on the charming smile so no one will see him hurt. And when he was being goofy and asking Hye Jin if it's why she likes him, it made me a little sad, because - in the context of that Director who didn't like the non-goofy Shin Hyuk -- it's like he doesn't think anyone would like him for anything but that.

I love his character as well and I squee anytime I see photos of him. But then I read comments about the actor's real life and it takes a bit of the shine off and I have to remind myself again Character vs Actor. They share the same face but are NOT the same person.

I think a part of me really likes his character cause I also make jokes or goof when I don't know how to act. Something in my brain goes off when someone gives me really bad news or flusters me and 9.9 times out of 10, a dumb joke will come out. Afterwards, my brain will stew for hours about how dumb/callous I was so I've been assuming that's also what's going on with the character.

If I didn't have to explain, I would have pics of shirtless Siwon as my phone wallpaper. swoooon

I like his character too. And I can see where some hate of his character comes from... but IMHO, he feels real, and totally understandable... and actually more relatable than the main characters...

We, as the audience know the end game - SJ and HJ getting together - they're MEANT TO BE. But the characters don't know that. Shin Hyuk handled things in a human-like manner.

He was rejected, therefore, he established distance and dropped the familiarity. How many people really have it in them to continue to be buddy buddy with their object of affection after them rejecting you? I can understand him wanting to create some boundaries. Then he flipped... 'cause you know you ALWAYS think... 'what if I tried a little bit more?' And here is where our usually 2nd lead villain comes in in our usual dramas. The ones who just WOULD NOT LET GO for 15 straight episodes - THOSE are the infuriating ones. But Shin Hyuk? he can't let go yet, and I don't blame him... it's been what.. 2, 3 days?? Give the guy a break, he needs to do his little flip floppy dance for him to finally let go.

She moved as a kid and her mail stopped being delivered, and there are a ton of Hye Jins in Korea. Also his therapist was telling him that he was idealizing a childhood love - not advice that makes you uproot your life and scour another country for a girl who stopped writing you back fifteen years ago.

But I'm also not sure he was "sent" to Most, I think he might have created this opportunity, as least in part so he could have an excuse to look for Hye Jin. He certainly went to the effort of finding her email, and tried to meet with her immediately.

I wonder if the writer will use the possible return to America as a source of angst. Unless SJ has a reason to return (maybe he has a few things to take care of), I think he could always try to stay in Korea . I don't know the job market , but I am thinking he could possibly stay with Most and/or find another job.

I'm guessing the show will be focusing on the identities of RaRa's nephew and Ten. They must be keys to save MOST, if the show is dragging the relocation for so long -- although that doesn't necessarily mean that it is interesting...

since most conflict and plot have been solved by now, and it's only episode 12, the show will probably focus on the MOST magazine struggle to survive, and who is the CEO nephew.... kinda meh, but will stick til the end.

The next problems should be:
- the struggle of Most to be the no 1
- the CEO nephew
- the identity of TEN
- SH's real identity
- Ha Ri - SH love story (wishful thinking .. hahaha)
- after 3 months : what will happen to SJ ? Doesn't his mission lasts for 3 months only or for good ? Is he returning to America ? Will HJ stays with the Editing team after 3 months ?

oh...my...days, shin-hyuk you are absolutely killing me. second lead syndrome has hit me right in the feels from the get-go. it is so real, i adore sung-joon, i do; but shin-hyuk has pulled all the moves and has done it all. he's so quirky and fun that when he gets serious it honestly makes it seem a lot more genuine and that ending,

"thank you... for hesitating," - Aackk! i died inside a little :'( you'll find your own shin-hyuk, she's out there!

that being said, i do appreciate the direction the writers took with the way hye-jin is handling this whole shin-hyukxhye-jin thing. her refusal to go with him in the car and all that, there's a level of respect she has with him. and she knows it's purely platonic, but she doesn't want to lead him on in that aspect knowing that she WILL choose sung-joon. it's a complicated situation for her for sure, only thing i hope is she and shin-hyuk don't lose their, quirky/awesome friendship element. JAAAAACKSON!!!!

Congratulations, Si-won! The first actor in Korean drama history to do a pre-army abs gratuitous shower scene!

Joking aside, ahhhhh! This drama is everything! I'm just still super impressed with the characterizations. I'm finding that to be the key to a good rom-com--a show where I don't dislike any characters and wish bad luck on any. This is how you write second leads, this is how you write female friendships, this is how you write two men who love the same women. This is how you write the supporting cast. I mean, I love them all, from our leads to the Most team to Hye-jin's family.

My favorite thing about the characters is that no matter what bullshit they do, they pull through in the end. Sung-joon has had his bad moments, but oh my goodness is he the best at being in love. His patience with Hye-jin and his respect of her feelings are way more swoony than anything else (okay, maybe except kisses!)

Shin-hyuk, throughout this episode, had me going, dude, just give it up. But again, at the end, he pulled through by not only driving Hye-jin to Sung-joon, but also by admitting defeat and understanding that Hye-jin's happiness was more important than his own.

Ha-ri's awesomeness pulled through just by growing up and pushing Hye-jin in the right direction. She wasn't some clingy second-lead who can't let go of a man who doesn't love her--that's so refreshing to see in a drama. Also, I loved her use of the shoe metaphor because she's like the only person who understands them, and it was so funny when she was like, "Hye-jin, this isn't about shoes. Go get Sung-joon!"

And Hye-jin is still the best. Her selflessness is her greatest asset, but like with Sung-joon's honesty, it could be her greatest fault as well. So while I understood her hesitation to be with Sung-joon, I was still a bit frustrated with it. But she rocked those shoes and made up her mind and made me so proud of her.

I love this show to bits, I'm just soooooo happy to have a good rom-com this year.

Agreed 100%, especially this line "Sung-joon has had his bad moments, but oh my goodness is he the best at being in love. His patience with Hye-jin and his respect of her feelings are way more swoony than anything else"

That's honestly SO TRUE. Out of all the character's, Seung Joon really shows best how to be in love and be respectful of your partner, something which is greatly lacking in kdrama land.

And HA RI. HA RI. HA RI. HA RIIIIIIIIII. I could devote 36 sonnets to her and Hye Jin's friendship at this point and it still wouldn't be enough. I'm sososo proud of her and the direction the writers took her self-realization, as well as her and Hye Jin's friendship. I just. tears. no man is ruining THIS best-friend-ship!! (even if the man in question is seung joon lol)

There must be something wrong with me. The higher the ratings and the more the korean audiences LOVE this drama, the more uninteresting and boring I find this drama. Most of what is going on in this episode and the next feel like manufactured angst to me and Hye jin must be the Most unsympathetic heroine ever. She's continued her illogical behavior. Hello? Cell phones exist for a reason. If you can't find someone at the airport, stupidly waiting until the exit is almost empty is the dumbest move you can make. Why not just call Sung Joon and ask where he is? And btw, in these days of compromised airport security, how can one be so fixated in welcoming an arrival they ignore all commotion happening around them?!

That's what happens when there are too many episodes that need to be filled somehow. We spend time meandering amongst plot contrivances. The main couple have found each other, so where is the dramatic tension? This drama could do with fewer episodes and a tighter script.

I agree, any way she was going to surprise him, if she calls it won't be good and she is still shy of him, they are not that close to ask where are you? and what are you doing? things, i think writer is correct.

0

@mido

I thought about that. She doesn't have to let him know that she is out there to surprise him. And she have could invented a business reason to call him. She did so in the past episode when she was trying to get him away from her sister and into the office stat. A phone call asking his whereabouts would have cleared things up immediately.

0

I agree with you. Though I enjoy the episodes, the over-exaggerated acting of Hwang in the character of KHJ is irritating and nonsensical. What is the point of looking under the railing to look at the entrance of the airport? Comedy or humor or comic relief does not mean acting "stupid". It would have seemed more realistic if she had been more natural.

On the other hand, I find Choi Siwon a really good actor. I think he is the best actor in this drama, even though a second lead.

There is nothing wrong with you. :) I kept thinking about those popular cell phones too, why wouldn't she use it?
When she kept repeating she was going to meet him later it was evident something like that was going to happen.

The thing is SWP was never a show about logic, they don't use it, don't need it. Some romcoms are like that and the sooner you accept it, in order to drop them or not, the easier to like them later. :)

That's why we call it a drama, this is not a documentary. if you want to watch some logical things move on to thrillers, and melos. this drama is loved by many, of course any one can complain, but admire their hard work.

i don't think they're complaining, it's just that it's easier to pick-up these small flaws because they're evident on what we would do.

nothing wrong in thinking logically, even though it can be frustrating when small things can be avoided, which is the reason i just go with it all, i've watched enough dramas to know indefinitely that logic is an aspect that we do not have the pleasure of seeing time and time again.

it works for the writers, and it gives the plot some pushing/lagging and you know added time. . .

Isn't that obvious ? She meant to surprise him, so why should she call ? She couldn't call Reporter Cha to confirm his schedule either, coz that would bring suspicions. Besides, she already heard what time he would back, plus she really only missed him by a second.

Anyway, I'm really really not a fan of romcom. I usually watch thriller and action instead. I watch this just because I don't have anything to watch and .. I was so surprised that I could get hooked! This is light, sweet, and good. I don't find this boring, despite the plot holes

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip—thoughtful and a fun read as usual :)

I gotta say, though, I don't think I could disagree more with the criticism of Shin Hyuk in the post and in some of the comments! I don't think he's been disrespectful of Hye Jin at all, nor do I think Hye Jin is at all confused by his behavior. He knows she likes Sung Joon, she knows Shin Hyuk likes her. He's treating her the same way he always has, looking out for her, joking around with her, and making clear that he likes her (or trying to, anyway). What's confusing? However uncomfortable Shin Hyuk's feelings make her, it's not as though there's anything he can do to make them go away, short of just ignoring her—which is Sung Joon's way of handling uncomfortable feelings, not Shin Hyuk's.

And that's a related problem for me; I can't see Sung Joon's behavior as water under the bridge at all. He hasn't been only kind and gentle with her since developing feelings for her. He deliberately tried to freeze her out and fired her in a completely humiliating way in front of everyone, and he clearly already had feelings for her then.

Maybe I could forgive it if that had been the only terrible thing he did or the worst, but from the beginning he's been judgmental and at times cruel with anyone who isn't "his" Hye Jin, or related to her. There's no taking back some of the stuff he said to Hye Jin in earlier episodes, like calling her mentally disabled—both incredibly mean and inappropriate, and contemptuous of people with mental disabilities.

I find it kind of disturbing that Sung Joon thinks it's OK to blow that hot and cold with people, and to be so completely dismissive toward basically the entire world besides his supposed soul mate. It's not cute and it's not attractive. It's extremely off-putting, actually.

This is a pretty major flaw with the writing and characterization in SWP: the second lead is just hands down a better person and a better potential partner—to anyone, not just Hye Jin!—than the first lead. It's Shin Hyuk who has been nothing but attentive and caring toward Hye Jin since the beginning, even before he realized he liked her. He also told her he liked her as soon as he was aware of it, unlike Sung Joon; he didn't take his feelings out on her, unlike Sung Joon. Kind of ironic given Sung Joon calling Shin Hyuk a coward when it comes to his feelings—he's been anything but.

It's Shin Hyuk who challenged Sung Joon and Ha Ri to be worthy of Hye Jin—behind the scenes, without trying to get any credit for it, just because he knew Hye Jin deserved to be treated better. Shin Hyuk liked Hye Jin for the klutzy, melodramatic, unfashionable, but ultimately deeply caring person she is from day one—which is why Hye Jin has always been able to be her complete self around him. She's never seemed as at ease or as happy around Sung Joon as she does with Shin Hyuk.

She's not obligated to return or accept his feelings at...

Sorry for the long comment—got cut off :p

Overall SWP is well written and funny, and I'm enjoying it, but not nearly as much as I did in the beginning. With each episode the romance feels more forced and Sung Joon looks more like an awful choice for Hye Jin, especially in comparison to Shin Hyuk. Don't get me wrong, Hye Jin is absolutely not obligated to return or accept Shin Hyuk's feelings—no Nice Guy syndrome here. But I'm baffled as to why, aside from the nostalgia factor, Hye Jin is so strongly drawn to Sung Joon, especially when there's someone right next to her who has been so sweet and funny and vocal in telling her she's beautiful and wonderful just the way she is. If anyone is the fantasy romantic hero, it's Shin Hyuk.

That whole novel to say—SWP becomes less satisfying with each episode as it feels like this awesome, deeply good human being is rushing headlong into a relationship with someone who isn't anywhere near as awesome or good as she is, while never considering as a possible partner the equally awesome and good person who is literally right next to her. Meh.

I completely agree! Thank you for conveying it so eloquently. My unease with SJ's personality carried through to Ep. 13, which made the episode less enjoyable to me.

I wonder though if SH was less attractive, his behavior would come off more infantile/annoying. (For example, Flower Boys Next Door's main lead was really goofy and I found that offputting because I personally didn't really find him attractive in the first place. Ugh, he dressed up in a panda suit once and I was just cringing throughout the whole scene, even though it was supposed to be cute/sweet.) But being super hot definitely can give someone the confidence to be goofy and do silly things without worrying about being ostracized, so maybe that's neither here nor there.

SJ is just such a brooding character with a ton of insecurity issues (who takes it out on other people, which is the worst), while SH is someone who is obviously secure in himself and who he is. You're right in that SJ didn't just treat HJ with disdain, but pretty much everyone - his aboutface with HJ doesn't translate to his general disregard for people. I really think SJ needs to do some soul-searching and go to therapy or something to become someone worthy of HJ (to borrow your words). We've seen him in therapy before, so I hope he really turns it around. For all of HJ's overreacting (which tends to only happen when she is anxious/stressed from lying), she is still a good person to others. I don't know. Maybe the writer is trying to have it be one of those relationships where they "heal" or "fix" one another to become better people, which is not really the healthiest way to be a couple.

The most telling difference to me is that SH respects her decision to go because in the end, he wants her to be happy, and I knew he would do so, because his character has shown him to be someone who cares deeply for her. I just don't know if SJ would do the same - for me, it seems he sees her as the endgoal of a first love, rather than as an individual. I know he fell in love w/ her before the reveal, but it was done in such a reluctant way on his part that it kind of soured him for me. His seemingly genuine contempt for people is just so hard to swallow.

Also, HJ's and SJ's goals so far in this series have aligned (both wanting to know/to be the real HJ, wanting to be together as a couple, Most magazine being successful, etc.), but I'm curious to see how he would act if their goals didn't align.

But I’m baffled as to why, aside from the nostalgia factor, Hye Jin is so strongly drawn to Sung Joon, especially when there’s someone right next to her who has been so sweet and funny and vocal in telling her she’s beautiful and wonderful just the way she is. If anyone is the fantasy romantic hero, it’s Shin Hyuk.

Because, unlike Shin-hyuk, he gets who she is on a fundamental level. He understands her, they have a "connection", they have actual chemistry. He's her type, etc. While Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin obviously have a mental disconnect, they're not on each other's wavelengths.

Sung-joon gently motivated her to pursue her dreams while Shin-hyuk mortified her by putting her on the spot. Sung-joon jokes around WITH her while Shin-hyuk makes HER the joke (which she does NOT like).

Hye-jin has basically been shown to be mostly irritated at Shin-hyuk 90% of the drama. Shin-hyuk's a funny fella for the audience, but from Hye-jin's perspective, it is NOT funny when you feel you're the butt of the joke (the dog-donseng, "Jackson", definitely not "normal") and the victim of incessant pranks (rubber spider, sneaking up on her). Hye-jin's POV on Shin-hyuk and Sung-joon has been so clearly spelled out in the drama IMO. There's no ambiguity to her feelings. It's refreshing, never did I once feel, "well, why doesn't she like that other guy?" Even if Sung-joon and Hye-jin didn't have those childhood memories, I really doubt she would pick Shin-hyuk over him.

OK, one thing I have to add - I don't understand why SLS-ers keep pointing out Shin-hyuk finding her pretty "just the way she is" as if it's specific to him in this drama? Sung-joon has never once remarked on Hye-jin's appearance while Shin-hyuk threw a mini-fit at her getting makeover (which is totally NOT cool by me).

I think Sung joon finds ALL parts of her attractive. The sketches of her in his sketch book were all about her unmade-over self, and he likes the newer "cleaned up" version too. I just wish SHE wasn't the ONLY one he seems to care about and relate to, I wish the drama would stretch him out a little to show that he CAN care about other people outside his crush/first love Hye jin.

Sung Joon has commented on her appearance—when she tried to look more "Most-like," he asked if she was playing a joke. And I also happen to agree with Shin Hyuk that Hye Jin looked better with the curls and rosy cheeks ;)

But I don't just mean her appearance. I mean her being incredibly quirky and kind of out of control. Shin Hyuk has both found that adorable and seen beyond it from the beginning, whereas other characters, including Sung Joon, have had to get past their initial negative impression of Hye Jin.

This is clearly a YMMV thing, but I think Shin Hyuk and Hye Jin have chemistry in spades. I'm really not feeling it much between her and Sung Joon. It's in part because I find his behavior so incongruous—sweet to the point of sappiness one minute, and uber-brusque the next. I don't buy any of his lovey-dovey stuff with Hye Jin bc I can't reconcile it how he treats everyone else.

Honestly?

I have to agree with you regarding the chemistry. I am NOT seeing the chemistry between Hye jin and Sung joon, which is a shame because I love both actors and I loved the chemistry they had on KMHM but it is somewhat lacking on this show (maybe because Sung joon is such a stiff, inflexible character). I feel like we are rooting for them to end up together because the script says so, not because of actual chemistry between the couple.

And I see that Shin Hyuk and Hye jin do have much more chemistry, but the problem with that pairing is that it started off too much on the wrong foot. No one wants to be made fun of and be the butt of jokes so often, Shin Hyuk treated Hye jin more like a pet or a younger sister than a romantic interest. For him to suddenly switch gears now feels totally out of place and inconsistent from the tone of their interactions from Day 1.

0

@Adal—agreed re: their chemistry on KMHM. I was really excited for their on-screen reunion, which makes how things have turned out doubly disappointing :/

We do get to see a lot of what Shin Hyuk does and feels for Hye Jin that she doesn't see (although there are signs she misses, too), and probably that's part of what sways me in his direction. I don't really get the sense that Hye Jin feels like the butt of Shin Hyuk's jokes, though, more like she's constantly being teased. She does laugh an awful lot with him. I am personally a sucker for people who make me laugh, though, and I don't really find Sung Joon's character amusing, so that's another point in Shin Hyuk's favor for me ;)

0

Sung Joon has commented on her appearance—when she tried to look more “Most-like,” he asked if she was playing a joke.

Hm. xD Totally valid reaction -- she literally came in with clown make up and was obviously attempting something and failing drastically at it. And the comment had nothing to with the attractiveness or lack thereof of her looks :-P , but her "incompetence".

And I also happen to agree with Shin Hyuk that Hye Jin looked better with the curls and rosy cheeks ?

OK, but IMO it's cheap of Shin-hyuk to pass a comment like that when she's clearly happy with the makeover and it was spontaneous. It would be something else if she were forced into it or was obviously feeling uncomfortable being that way. I don't like male leads who prioritize the female leads' appearance. It makes no difference to me if the "look" they like is considered unconventional. I loved Sung-joon's lack of reaction to the makeover for this reason.

But I don’t just mean her appearance. I mean her being incredibly quirky and kind of out of control. Shin Hyuk has both found that adorable and seen beyond it from the beginning, whereas other characters, including Sung Joon, have had to get past their initial negative impression of Hye Jin.

Wasn't her "quirkiness" and general unhinged-ness at MOST acknowledged to be caused by her being totally paranoid about being around Sung-joon? She wasn't that way around Ha-ri or anyone else. She isn't that way now.

This is clearly a YMMV thing, but I think Shin Hyuk and Hye Jin have chemistry in spades. I’m really not feeling it much between her and Sung Joon. It’s in part because I find his behavior so incongruous—sweet to the point of sappiness one minute, and uber-brusque the next. I don’t buy any of his lovey-dovey stuff with Hye Jin bc I can’t reconcile it how he treats everyone else.

Clearly! I don't see much chemistry in their kiddish bickering and sibling-like dynamics. I honestly dislike those kind of OTPs. In the parts where Shin-hyuk's tricking Hye-jin into buying him street-food and equating her to his dog and she's just disgusted by his manners and keeps on screaming at him = ugh. Those were hilarious scenes, made me laugh, but they're the ones which made me NOTP them.

But by having chemistry, I meant in-drama acknowledged chemistry -- which Hye-jin lacks with Shin-hyuk. There's no romantic or sexual tension, no attraction (from her side) -- just nothing.

0

Right, Hye Jin doesn't view him as a romantic prospect—like I said, I don't really get that. I'm not saying Hye Jin's feelings are really for Shin Hyuk or anything, I'm saying I fundamentally don't get her feelings, for Sung Joon especially. As far as childishness goes, I think it's far more childish for a supposed professional to fire someone because he can't handle having a crush on her than for someone to make fart jokes or play pranks. The former is pretty much unforgivable to me; the latter can change.

0

And again, not saying she has to be with Shin Hyuk (though if such a person were head over heels in love with me I'd probably give them the old college try). I just really don't get why she's with Sung Joon. She's a kind person; he's really not. He has other virtues—he's hardworking, generally principled, definitely good-looking, smart, etc. etc.—but kind, no. And it just leaves me cold to see someone who, more than any thing else, stands out for unfailingly kind and considerate with other people with such a rigid and often callous person.

Man, I've literally never been a second lead shipper in years of watching k-dramas but this one really has me going. I'll stop now.

0

I remember being baffled in the first couple episodes - our first introduction to the adult SJ was when HJ tries to enter the elevator but is bullied out by a more put-together office girl. A mysterious male hand pushes out the bully and HJ gets to ride up instead. It's later revealed it was SJ who did this. This is a genuine kind gesture to a stranger - which he has not done ever since.

Why such an out-of-character move? I'm sure he hates bullies (after all, he was bullied in childhood for his weight), but then he himself bullies HJ. It's just so hypocritical and confusing.

(If anyone remembers adult SJ being nice to strangers since, please let me know - I'm first to admit that I don't always remember every interaction.)

Agree with @Perra.

This is the first romcom that I've watched after a long long time, because I'm bored with the typical romcom formula in kdramas. Do you girls remember the topic for the 20th Most edition? Beauty behind the shadows, where they explore the people behind the main leads. I think this is also the theme of SWP : They want to give more depths to the 2nd leads : Ha Ri and SH. That's why, we got more sympathetic and deep 2nd leads.

Then again, I never find the main cast to be overshadowed by the 2nd leads. That's what so good in this drama : it explores everyone's character equally so that the main leads are still the main leads while the second ones have chance to shine.

SJ, in my opinion, is a very mature main lead. Yes, he is strict and he never listens, but that is part of his characters and he also learns and grows into someone better. His feelings are very obvious : he only loves HJ. When he dated Ha Ri, he dated her because he thought she was HJ. Then again, his heart could feel that she was NOT HJ, so despite his logic saying 'she is the one that I
should love', his heart were saying 'no, she is not'. That's why, at the time he knew who Ha Ri really was, he left her just like that. It was HJ all along, despite how pretty Ha ri was. He was attracted to her because she was very nice (buying him lunch) and reminding him of his first love, not because of her appearence.
Regarding SH, he was also a very mature guy. And I also understand why he keeps on pursuing HJ in this episode : because he is a guy who won't give up just like that, just like SJ. For HJ, yes ..it's rather annoying. Then again, I feel that she feels more sorry and conflicted than being annoyed, since she realizes how nice he is. That's what I would feel too, if I were her.

Tired of the whitewashing and sanctifying of Shin-hyeok and demonizing and pathologizing of Seong-joon showcased by some comments here.

And then there's the fact, although Sung Joon dated Ha Ri for a good while, the second he found out she wasn't Hye Jin, he dropped her. Without a thought, without a doubt, without so much as a glance backwards. I understand that she lied to him, but after spending so much time together, surely he'd have wanted to at least find out why she did it and to end things properly?

It just cemented in my mind the fact that (childhood love) Hye Jin is the only person Sung Joon cares about and is capable of being nice to.

I think he needed time, as did she, which is only fair. It was awkward for the both of them, and I like that they both handled it maturely when the time came. Considering how she played with his feelings, he had every right to be angry. And she recognises that too. But he didn't stay angry with her, and that's very telling. Not only that, he also very graciously accepted her apology and ended their encounter with a handshake. How much nicer do you want him to be?

It's not just that he was angry, it's that he just vanished without a word, even as she was clearly distraught, and just didn't seem to spare any further thought for her until he happened to run into her. But we're supposed to believe he had feelings real enough to make him feel truly conflicted about falling for Hye Jin? And that the same totally cold dude was this crying softie in the very next scene? It's too much emotional whiplash for me. I don't buy it as behavior from the same character—and if I did I'd find it disturbing that someone could switch off his feelings like that.

Seriously, he just found out the girl he has been trying so hard to NOT love is the same girl he's been trying to find all this time - he damn well better rush to be with her!

Imagine our comments if he'd stopped and said, "Miss Ha Ri, nice to meet you. May I ask, do you have real feelings for me or is that part of your lie as well? Oh, I'm so sorry that they are real and you let yourself create them as you did. Let me take you for some coffee while I make sure you're okay BEFORE I GO TO THE REAL HYE JIN".

SERIOUSLY.

He's only thinking of Hye Jin and being with Hye Jin in that moment, the rest of life will sort itself out as it will.

0

Personally, I'd have gotten more of a whiplash had he opened up, or even responded emotionally to Ha-ri. He vanished because his priority wasn't some girl (remember, he has no idea as to her relationship with Hye-jin) who pretended to be his long, lost, childhood friend. Ha-ri was distraught because he caught her in her own lie. But equally, doesn't he have a right to be distraught and go to the one person he's been seeking all his time. It's not his place to console someone who opted to lie. Perhaps I'd have felt different had Hye-ri got to him first, but she didn't, and therefore she too would have been embarrassed had he stuck around longer. She had nothing left to say in her defence except for the fact that she was sorry. So, I'd say the time out worked for the both of them. He wasn't being mean, it's just that his priority was the girl he clearly doesn't want to lose and whom he felt apologetic towards for not recognising her sooner. Putting it plainly, the dude had bigger fish to fry!! And that's not disturbing, it's human!

0

Seconding bbstl and namedx.

0

I mean…no one is expecting him to exchange pleasantries with her then and there. But it's like he just completely erased her from his mind. May not be weird to everyone, but it is to me! He as dating her and all.

0

Yeah.

This was a major issue for me as well. He just vanished.

Even if he had stayed to have things out with her, it would have been much better. Didn't he care about her at all? As a human being??? It leaves the relationship between Hye jin, Ha Ri and Sung joon to be much trickier to navigate in future. Ha Ri and Hye jin are best friends after all, and if Hye jin is to going to date Sung joon, he's going to have to interact with Ha ri in the future.

I wouldn't call what they were doing "dating." And he was going to tell her about his feelings for Hye-jin at the hotel, but her lie just made his job easier. And this happened after he already told Hye-jin how he felt, so I don't see how Hye-jin being the real Hye-jin made him love her more.

I completely agree with you! I cannot like Sung Joon in any way. They way he treats people is not okay, it boards on being abusive. The first episodes on how he treated Hye Jin was not expectable in anyway. I don't know if the translation in English softened his words a bit, but in Korean, it was beyond awful. His words where meant to belittle her, demean her, kick her when she is already down, then step on her just to make sure she doesn't get up. Even after he felt like he had feelings for her, he went over the top crazy on her. After that, I could not like him at all. I have been fast forward most part and just watch Siwon.

I do love Hari and Hye Jin's friendship. I will root for them until the end.

Sorry but I couldn't disagree more with your comment @NaijaNoona. Shin Hyuk got more and more frustrating for me as time went on. People keep saying HJ and him have a lot of chemistry but I wonder if they simply have SLS and wish HJ and SH were together. I think SJ and HJ have great chemistry. Can we please get over how SJ was in earlier eps. He has clearly changed.

Anyway, its obvious to me that fans are split when it comes to the show's ships. I enjoy SWP but can there be a show for once where the show isn't bogged down by ship please?! Ships tend to ruin things half the time.

OK, trying quoting:

Ha, yup. Shin-hyeok and Hye-jin shippers less about them being together than they are about Shin-hyeok, Shin-hyeok, Shin-hyeok. Wanting Hye-jin to be with him is mostly about him being happy. I mean, c'mon, you might love Shin-hyeok more than Seong-joon, but that doesn't mean it makes sense for Hye-jin to be with him.

There must be something wrong with my head, because when they were kissing, all I thought was "Bloody hell, Ri Jin is kissing her brother!!!!" It took me a minute to realise that they were actually step-siblings, and that it was OK-ish. And then an episode later on, and I still can't help but see them as sibilings when they kiss, which is odd because when they're not kissing, they look like Hye Jin and Seong Joon to me. *twisted mind*

loved this episode, from beginning til end.
but have to agree with most people here, the fake airport drama was useless.
that part kind of weighted down the last part of the episode.

Oh my, so much improvement for every characters here!
hari is getting back to her lovely and spunky old self. i LOVED that she apologized properly, and moved on with her life, and most of all NOT clung to Seung joon.

Then our lead couple finally got to hug and KISS!
after 12 episodes, i could not take it anymore!!!
every time i saw seung joon and hye jin on screen, i kept thinking : MY GOD, where's that bloody damn KISS!!!
they should have done it last week already.

last but not least, shin hyuk, bowing out like a boss.
OH YES!
i loved the final scene, where he finally gave up on hae jin, in the most gracious way possible; and gave his blessing to the couple; so that hae jin wouldn't fell bad about having rejected him, again, and for good.

i don't think shin hyuk was trying to bother hae jin. i guess he was trying out his very last chance to win over her, cos as he said ain't over til it's over.

I almost never suffered from the second lead syndrom, except for high school king of savy; which was the first time i ever felt it really bad!
so i guess i will always be rooting for team shin huyk, But i am also super happy that seung joon and hye jin finally get to be together, after so many years apart! this is one beautiful story and past they have.

i have been a fan of siwon for a long time now.
been disapointed with super junior recent comebacks, and siwon has been in way too many bad Chinese drama, which haven't even been aired.
So, i am glad that "she was pretty" would be his last work , before leaving to the army.
it's great to see him improving so much in acting and singing, and leaving with a bang.

Thanks for the recap, Lollypip! An enjoyable episode, despite the funk I was left in after last week's eps - which I think was more to do with the odd arrangement post cancellation. But oh well, this week's eps more than made up for it. The cute was back, characters redeemed themselves, and the general flow was enjoyable.

This ep was Hye Jin's, and whilst I found her somewhat frustrating in the last episode, I appreciate that the order of eps would have gotten me out of the funk earlier had this ep aired last week. Either way, I'm just glad she finally took the initiative to chase after what she wants. And I like how she gathered that courage from those she loves and respects.

It's so like her to go to Sung Joon only after she'd given closure to all those worries and anxieties which had forced her to rein in her feelings in the first place, be it her self confidence, her friend Ha Ri, or Shin Hyuk. This ep allowed all of them to grow and reassess their feelings without damaging their current relationships, which I felt was really in line with their characters. And it's also the reason why I didn't, for once, find any of them frustrating.

I'm really glad Shin-hyuk got a chance to express and gracefully fold in his feelings for Hye-jin. It was important that he got that closure because I do believe he got the heavier end of the bargain, in that he had to not only give up on his feelings for Hye-jin but also preserve the friendship they had established on mutual grounds.

Without his one last effort, not only would it have created awkwardness between them, but he too would have held lingering feelings for which Hye-jin would have continually felt sorry for, and he knows that. By giving himself that one last chance - it ain't over till it's over - he was able to protect himself and his friendship with Hye-jin from getting hurt. And he did it respectfully, I feel, without playing dirty. He drew the lines clearly, and was thankful to Hye-jin for giving him that opportunity.

I also appreciated where they took Ha-ri's character. Last week's confrontation gave her time to not only realise her mistakes, but also how to rectify them. And that made all the difference in portraying her in a light which audiences would find favourable and empathetic. I enjoyed rooting for her character in the beginning, and I'm glad that writers have given us the opportunity to root for her again. It was cutting it close, but her character really made amends by the end.

It's also the reason why I could never hate Sung Joon's character, even when he busy being an ass at the beginning. I do find some of the criticism thrown his way a little harsh; He's by no means perfect, but the fact that he's flawed, allowed me to warm to his character knowing he's sincere and on a positive trajectory. I do wonder whether writers had made an error in portraying his character so harsh in the beginning, as they made a concious effort to tone it down considerably by ep4. Which is why I'm happy to write off his attitude in the beginning, as his temperament since ep4 has been consistent, and also redeemable.

He's never delayed righting his wrongs, and the sincerity with which he makes amends is what makes him perfect for Hye-jin. That, and the fact that he treasures her, not just as a friend, but a person he's grown to admire and respect just as she is. Personally, I think he's a great character!!

Yes, closure! This week was all about closure, which I feel is something we don't get a lot of from dramas. I understand that not all dramas are designed to have closure, but it's nice to have it when we spend two-three months living in their world.

it was near the end when he drops hye-jin off to the hospital, he pulls out his coin to make a bet on whether to let her go or hold onto her type of thing. he doesn't show her the coin after flipping it but tells her to go to sung-joon where she hesitates before leaving.

it's a small thing, but considering their friendship; it means a lot, not only because they're friends but it also gives shin-hyuk that glimpse of her that she's not entirely putting his feelings on a back burner, but that she DOES appreciate and respect him and also she's thankful to him and doesn't want to hurt him too. it was like a, 'thank you for not completely disregarding my feelings,' and a shit load of other unspoken thank you's that may have been warranted, but at the same time it's incredibly heartbreaking too </3

for me, that scene stole the whole entire episode for me.

Heh. Looks like I wasn't the only one who hit rewind button a few times to check out those abs. The scene was funny. All four leads' ro-bro-yeomances are cute, but the show have burnt all the fuel in the plot already. It should've had nicely wrapped up and ended at the episode 12. Makeover - done, hugs and kisses - bestowed, mistaken identity - found out, noble idiocy - quickly over, the dimples and abs - flashed. Nothing interesting left to watch there.

Thanks very much, LollyPip, for your wonderful recap! You write so well---eloquently and with wit and humor that makes me chuckle and laugh out loud at your recap of hilarious scenes. I am a fan!! :)

After watching this episode, I've come to a more solid confirmation of the the two mysterious identities---Ten and the Chairman's son:

1. I believe that Sung Joon is the heir!

During the garden scene between him and Hye Jin, he commented that he has the responsibility to turnaround Most...a heavy burden given that he only has three months to succeed. He also added that he feels responsible for the staff now that he is there, not wanting to fail and have them lose their jobs.

I believe that he was sent to prove his credibility and worthiness to be the successor of the company. His expression and demeanor suggests a responsibility that goes beyond a normal job role.

2. Shin Hyuk is the famous writer Ten!

In all the scenes when everyone is raving and giddy at hearing news of Ten's upcoming novel, he's remained aloof and uninterested...looking amused at all their "aweing".

He seems to be independently wealthy, as befits a successful writer.

He's a known and good writer at Most, as shown by the many articles SJ reviewed and by the fact that he's gotten exclusive interviews by famous notables.

He speaks English and most of the communication shared by Joon about Ten has been in English.

The latest hint came out that Ten is Korean...that seems to solidify it for me!

Final comment...I'm earnestly hoping that Leonard Kim will turn out to be a glorious cameo by Ji Sung!!

How gloriously fun will that be!!

I like that viewers are even picturing the idea of a Shin Hyuk/Hye Jin pairing. It's obviously not going to happen, but!!! I will just say, Shin Hyuk's character has more sex appeal and feels factor in one finger, than Sung Joon does in his whole six foot frame. It's just fact.

Much as I sort of liked the role he played in KMHM, watching this actor as a love interest for Hye Jin, is like watching a real life brother-sister romance. Which, ewww. HAHA.

Sooo wish kdramaland will break its own rules and let Sung Joon not get the girl. Anyone but him.. right now he's like the Jeb Bush of kdrama leads. Pretty, boring.

Loving the overall show though!!!

HA RI, oh my days. HA RI.

I apologise for what I said before, you turned out so much better than I thought, I’m so proud of you, Ha Ri, HA RIIII. “I’m going to apologise for the rest of your life” and the CLOTHES AND THE SELF REALIZATION.

I JUST. HA RI. HA RI. I LOVE YOU AGAIN. I LOVE YOU MORE THAN BEFORE. HAAAAA RIIIIIIIIIIIII. YOU’VE FINALLY BECOmE SUCH A GREAT PERSON, SUCH A GREAT BEST FRIEND, HA RIIIIIIIIIIIII.

I've turned into a cheerleader lol, but I'm just SO happy to have her back ;-;

And then poor Seung Joon ahhh. Honestly my thoughts the whole scene were just "now that Ha Ri’s finally come to her senses, can Hye Jin come to her senses too and help poor Seung Joon? Please?"

Like, JUST GIVE THE POOR GUY A HUG, HYE JIN.

And Shin Hyuk aww puppy, I was so glaaaaaaaaaad to see him come back after all (although I did choke on my water when he came out with that towel). I was so sorry for losing faith in him too, so glad to see he came back after alllll

;-; Ha Ri and Hye Jin’s friendship is just as, if not more precious than it was in the beginning and I’m so relieved and proud and happpyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Also it warmed my heart to see EVERYONE at Most fuss over Seung Joon when he had his nosebleed. He’s really grown on all the employees despite his temper.

…Annnnnnd theeeeennnn Shiny Hyuk. Oh boy. Shin Hyuk. Puppy. No. I love you getting back to normal, but no. Please just accept your rejection okay honey this isn't how you should be behaving, alright. No. Poor Hye Jin tbh, the awkwardness.

And ohhhhhhh, Ha Ri. I love her soooooooooo much now. So much. She’s matured. She’s matured so much and become so great. The SHOES. Her speaking up for Seung Joon. ;-;

And was I the only one cackling the whole time Hye Jin kept missing Seung Joon? It was kind of vindicating to see her so frustrated after all he suffered the last few eps tbh lol. And it was so adorableeeee seeing her run after him ahhh.

UNTIL THE AIRPORT. GAH.

And then Shin Hyuk finally grew up (hopefully this time for realsies) which I was really glad to see. I was losing my patience with him dragging this out for so long. Don't lose a friendship while clinging onto a romance, bby.

AND THEN. BDBSAKJDBAKJBA. SEUNG JOON FINALLY GOT HIS HUG. BABY. HE DESERVED IT. GOOD. GAHS.

To be honest, I’m kinda worried about what kinda plot’s gonna happen in the next four eps. I mean, while I love the idea of seeing our whole eps with the otp, one or two eps would really be enough to wrap this up. I’m kinda worried about how they intend to fill in the gap…

Please just don’t pull that whole ‘study abroad and reunite after a couple of years’ thing, show. Please.

I go back and forth from being annoyed at this drama to squeeing. There are scenes/moments from this drama that I really love, but I guess I'm really not a fan of the whole screechy too bubbly bumbling Hye jin. I also feel annoyed that she keeps holding back while poor poor Sung Joon is just sooo lonely. I feel there's almost a weird tone - it's like Sung joon and Hye jin are in 2 different drama. Sung joon is doing this angsty melo drama, while Hye jin is in a comedy show. It's kinda weird. His emotions feels very very intense, while she keeps trying to make everything light. I dunno it's weird.

One thing I'm kinda worried about is: does Sung joon has eating disorder? He doesnt' keep any food at home and seems to be kinda starving himself? am not entirely sure.

Hi Lollypip, just to point out- when Shin Hyuk flipped the coin outside the hospital and told Hye Jin it was heads to make her go inside (he'd told her that it was heads without looking at the coin), the coin was actually revealed to be tails. That's why SH was so heartbroken when he unfurled his fist to see which side the coin was on after sending HJ inside, because of what could have been.

Also I read somewhere that there was a slight mistranslation for the subtitles on Viki during the same scene outside the hospital. It was translated that SH told HJ 'if it's heads, I'll leave without looking back.' In actual fact, SH didn't say a pronoun - Koreans sometimes don't say I/You when talking to a person because it is obvious that they're referring to the person in front of them. So SH's real lines should have been 'You (HJ) leave without looking back'. Which makes it even more heartbreaking considering that it was SH who wholeheartedly made the decision to send HJ away towards SJ without hesitating any longer.

Btw, my earlier para on the coin was because I noticed you wrote "After Hye-jin runs in, he pulls out the coin, and his face finally crumples as he sees that it would have been heads after all." But it's actually tails!

(Or am I getting confused by SH's heads-tails mind boggley stuff on the show, haha...correct me if I'm wrong!)

You know this Heads or Tails thing is really bugging me.

My looooong time understanding of the coin toss is that the number is Tails.

The picture on coins (of what was once the Queen's Head or King's Head on coins of kingdoms), is called Heads. Now that picture can be anything but a head of someone, but it's still considered Heads since the number on the other side is still Tails.

So SH was sad because it was Tails and he could have used that to keep HJ with him instead of letting her go.

what happened to the chemistry from KMHM? I mean they were siblings there but I felt more chemistry between those two there than I do here..watching the kiss was just..bleh. It just felt like nothing..can we bring back PSJ's character from Witch's Romance? Now he definitely had sex appeal in that one.. He and the female lead just seem so passionless to me and it makes me slightly uncomfortable because it almost feels like they are kissing just because they have to.. Shin-hyuk keeps me watching tho. :))

@Lizzie: I kinda agree with you. I'm also not feeling the chemistry. They have great chemistry as siblings/friends but as lovers it just doesn't work for me. I cringe with all the romantic scenes and it's not because they played siblings but it's just that I can't see that romantic chemistry. Maybe it's just me... I don't know. I love all the leads though so it's not even a biased opinion. :D

Just curious, were you a Ri On x Ri Jin shipper in KMHM then or did you ship her with Ji Sung's character?

It's was definitely about time for some progress between HJ and SJ. It felt like about 40 minutes were filled this ep. And I know some things were sorted out, still. Shin Hyuk annoyed me this ep with his refusal to move on. He made me uncomfortable. And there were so many scenes with the 2nd leads when all I wanted was my otp to get together. Perhaps the writer should have never pursued the love line between SH and HJ because it just wasn't fun.

Anyway, I was so happy when finally the otp got some alone time. And how swoonworthy was SJ is Jen he pulled HJ onto the bed?
