She Was Pretty: Episode 11

It’s heartbreaking when even the truth can’t solve your problems, as our love triangle are quickly coming to discover. Sometimes the truth only uncovers more hurt, and creates more problems in ways that can’t be predicted. They key is honest communication, but what do you do when someone refuses to be honest, even with themselves?

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Sung-joon calls Ha-ri to meet up as planned, and she tells him she’s working and she’ll see him later. But it’s too late, as he’s already there, and he sees her photo on a plaque with her real name.

He confronts her, and calls her by name, “Min Ha-ri. Who are you?” Looking heartbroken, he asks her why she pretended to be Kim Hye-jin. He shakes off her hand when she tries to touch him, so she just ekes out a tiny, “I’m Hye-jin’s friend.”

She explains that she was only supposed to meet him that once, but things got complicated when he bumped into her at the hotel. She was going to tell him the truth today… but he’s not interested. What he wants to know is, is the real Kim Hye-jin who he thinks it is?

Ha-ri confirms that he knows the real Hye-jin and tries again to explain, but Sung-joon is done with her. He walks away without a second thought, leaving Ha-ri crying.

All of the clues seem so obvious now, as Sung-joon thinks about things he’s heard and seen of the real Hye-jin. The past and the present meld together, and he realizes that the woman he’s been looking for has been right beside him all this time.

Meanwhile Shin-hyuk uses his final request of Hye-jin, and hugs her tightly. He begs her, if she can’t go to Sung-joon, then to please come to him. He just wants a chance, but Hye-jin gets a call from Sung-joon before she can answer him.

Sung-joon’s voice catches as she answers, and he says formally, “It’s been a long time, Kim Hye-jin.” He says it again in banmal, and starts to cry as he says he’s missed her. He asks her to meet him, now, and Shin-hyuk tries one last time and asks her with a sad smile not to go. Okay, they’re both breaking my heart!

Hye-jin just tells Shin-hyuk sincerely that she’s sorry, and runs. She and Sung-joon triangulate to find each other, and he sees her first and pulls her around by the arm. Oh, the expressions on their faces — so beautiful. Sung-joon starts to cry again, breathing, “I’ve finally found you, Kim Hye-jin,” and she joins him in tears.

He starts to bark at her, demanding to know why she didn’t tell him, didn’t she know how much he missed her? But he stops himself — it’s not important. He’s only sorry he’s so late in recognizing her, and she just smiles at him. He takes her face in his hands and examines her closely, and finally, finally recognizes his old friend.

They stand for a long time, just taking each other in, and for a moment they feel like their young selves as they join hands and walk together. He hear Hye-jin tell Sung-joon that she did go to meet him that day, but when he walked past her, she lost her confidence. He regrets that his mistake started all this, but they’re both so happy now, it hardly seems to matter anymore.

They ride on a riverboat and Sung-joon wonders how it must have been for her, knowing who he was and not being able to speak up. She admits that the small lie snowballed and got out of control. Sung-joon wonders if their situations had been reversed and he were the more unfortunate one, would she have been disappointed meeting him? He thought that kind of thing wouldn’t be important between them.

He turns serious and takes Hye-jin by the shoulders, and tells her that no matter what her circumstances or how she looked, it wouldn’t have mattered to him. Hye-jin regrets hiding now, but Sung-joon tells her that they’ll not regret anymore, and just look at the present.

She asks if he heard all this from Ha-ri, but he says he’s hearing it for the first time now. She’s shocked he didn’t talk to Ha-ri and runs home early, worried that Ha-ri isn’t okay. Ha-ri makes light of it, saying that she lost her head for a while and should have told Hye-jin sooner.

Hye-jin isn’t ready to accept her apology, reminding Ha-ri that she promised to tell Sung-joon the truth and set things right. Ha-ri says that it just happened before she got the chance, and runs out, claiming to have a date.

Left blinking in surprise, Hye-jin answers Hari’s phone where she left it in her room. She sees a ripped-up latter in Ha-ri’s trash can and puts it together, reading how Ha-ri was going to confess to Sung-joon, and everything he made her feel. Realizing that Sung-joon meant more to her friend than Ha-ri let on, Hye-jin goes looking for her.

She finds Ha-ri crying like her heart is breaking, and she watches for a while with tears in her own eyes. We hear the end of Ha-ri’s letter, where she’d apologized and said she’ll be sincerely cheering for him and Hye-jin, as Ha-ri sobs.

The next morning, things are a little awkward as Ha-ri lies about her “date” last night. But Sung-joon is excited to see Hye-jin again, and smiles at his own version of Onion Head at his place. Shin-hyuk can barely bring himself to get out of bed, poor guy.

Hye-jin takes advantage of Sung-joon’s absorption in his tablet at the street light to look her fill at him, then cutely gets a little annoyed that he doesn’t see her there. But when she does get his attention, his happy smile is just glorious.

He tries to take her hand to cross the street, but she whips it away, claiming to be stretching. He invites her to go to their old neighborhood for dinner tonight and to see their old haunts, but for some reason, she claims not to remember buying him that cake for Left-Hander’s Day.

In the elevator Hye-jin asks what she should call him now and natters on about his life in America, but he’s sort of over her antics. He doesn’t let her leave the elevator and hits the button for the top floor, and takes her to the roof to talk.

He’s hurt that she’s pretending to have only connected with an old friend and nothing more, but she says they should keep their personal and professional lives separate. He asks if that’s all he is to her, an old classmate, and his voice catches when he brings up the way they were last night, which felt to him like more.

Hye-jin thinks to herself Ha-ri likes you, but she just says that that “first love” stuff is so old-fashioned. Sung-joon doesn’t hide his disappointment, mentioning how much he’s been hoping all this time that it was more between them. He asks why she’s being like this, but she just says he’s too serious. Sung-joon says sadly that he guesses he was alone in thinking this was something special, but he must have been the only one who didn’t want to waste more time. He gets her point and leaves, and she sighs to herself sadly.

Hye-jin runs into Shin-hyuk on her way to the office, and gives him some money to repay him for his hospital bill. He pastes on his smile, which just looks weary now, and tells her not to bother.

Poong-ho notices the strange atmosphere, and asks Hye-jin what’s up between her and Shin-hyuk. Sung-joon overhears her loudly deny anything, and leaves the office in a huff.

Seul overhears Joon-woo talking to his father on the phone and calling him “president,” figuring it’s proof that she’s landed the true hidden chaebol. But she’s disappointed when he tells her his father was appointed president of his soccer club, and that he owns a dry cleaning business. At least it’s in Gangnam?

Meanwhile Shin-hyuk is driven somewhere in a fancy car with a driver, and tells the nicely-dressed older man in the car with him that he doesn’t need to bother calling him later. Iiinteresting.

In his office, Sung-joon remembers Shin-hyuk’s confession that he likes Hye-jin, and when Hye-jin delivers the meeting minutes he tells her that she doesn’t need to bring them to him personally anymore. He’s all business as he dismisses her, but he can’t keep it up. When she turns to go, he says breathlessly, “I can’t do it, Hye-jin-ah.”

He says to her back that he can’t just be her classmate, or keep their business and personal lives separate. He can’t, and he doesn’t want to. Reporter Cha interrupts them before Hye-jin can answer him, and he’s left hanging. Back at her desk, Hye-jin turns her Onion Head around to the crying side, which Sung-joon notices.

Shin-hyuk conducts his interview with a director, who asks him when he got so boring. He only agreed to this interview because Shin-hyuk is fun, but he was boring today. Shin-hyuk perks up and makes an effort, though it really seems like an effort now.

Afterward, he makes a call (in English, interestingly) promising to see someone soon, saying that he misses them. He wonders to himself if it’s time to leave.

Hye-jin arrives home that night in time to catch Ha-ri going out with a new man, whose name she doesn’t even know. Hye-jin is frustrated, but Ha-ri says it’s not like she doesn’t know her, so Hye-jin yanks her inside to talk.

She yells at Ha-ri, telling her to act upset if she’s upset, and not to pretend she’s fine. She tells Ha-ri that she saw her crying, but Ha-ri says that the one of them who’s truly pretending to be fine is Hye-jin. She yells that Hye-jin should be mad at her, and finally Hye-jin screams that yes, she’s very angry.

But it’s not because of Sung-joon. She holds herself responsible for this situation, but it’s Ha-ri’s attitude that infuriates her. She tells Ha-ri to stop avoiding her, but Ha-ri says that this is all she can do. She says that maybe it’s time they stop all this, and offers to disappear.

But Hye-jin is the one who’s been living at Ha-ri’s place, so she argues that she should go. She starts to pack right away, but Ha-ri just leaves without argument. So Hye-jin goes to her parents’ home for the night, annoyed when everyone asks after Ha-ri.

Sung-joon tries calling Hye-jin (who’s saved in his phone as “My Umbrella,” awww), but Hye-rin answers her phone. He finds out where her parents live and shows up there, and they all remember him from when he lived next door and fawn over the handsome man he’s grown into.

He makes no bones about the fact that he wants to date Hye-jin, which excites everyone but Hye-jin herself. Despite being such a lightweight, Sung-joon drinks Dad’s homemade wine when it’s offered, and immediately passes out on the table. HAHAHA.

Ha-ri’s night isn’t much better, as she comes home from her date to find her mother waiting to see her. Her mother asks her to forgive her, and both women cry wordlessly.

Hye-jin can’t sleep knowing that Sung-joon is in the house, and hee, both of her parents are watching him sleep and wondering about his feelings for their daughter. They happily go when Hye-jin shoos them back to their room, telling her to have a nice time. OMG, they’re so cute.

Hye-jin can’t help but smile as she watches Sung-joon sleeping, and he wakes up and catches her. She asks if he’s okay, but he tells her that no, he’s not, and it’s her fault. They go outside to talk, but she still won’t tell him why she’s acting so strange. He’s pretty sure of her feelings, so he doesn’t want any silly misunderstandings.

She tells him that maybe, just being his first love is special enough. She tries to explain but he interrupts, and says that back then, she took the place of his mother who wasn’t there. It was special because she was his only friend.

But that’s not why he likes her now — he likes her for who she is in the present. Even if they’d never met, he would still like her now. He asks her one last time if she’ll tell him why she’s acting like this.

Hye-jin finally admits that it’s because Ha-ri likes him a lot, and to her, Ha-ri is more than a friend. She’s as precious to Hye-jin as her family and Sung-joon are. If she’s with Sung-joon, Ha-ri will be hurt, which will hurt Hye-jin in return.

Sung-joon crouches in front of Hye-jin and forces her to make eye contact, and says, “The one I like, is you.” When they were kids, it was her, and when he didn’t know who she was, it was her. Now, and in the future, it’s her. Well, ~swoon~.

He says softly that he won’t push her, and he doesn’t want anything from her. He only asks that she not run away. He smiles when she sighs, saying that she’s even nicer now than when they were young, and that he’s happy she hasn’t changed.

The big news at work the next morning is Shin-hyuk — he’s rumored to be going to work for New Look, Most’s biggest rival magazine. He’s been scouted many times before, but he’s never left them. Of course Seul thinks this disqualifies Shin-hyuk as the hidden chaebol, and the only option left is… Poong-ho. Ha.

Shin-hyuk does show up for work though, bemused at his coworkers’ barrage of questions about his changing jobs. But he seems to confirm that he’s leaving, so Hye-jin follows him out of the office to ask if it’s true. He says he’s not going to New Look, but he is going — he just doesn’t know where, yet.

But it’s not all bad news today, as Most’s recent edition broke sales records. They’re not first place yet, that honor still belongs to New Look, but they’re getting close.

Sung-joon doesn’t join in the excitement, but Chief Editor Kim offers them her credit card to go out and have dinner on her. She does say ominously that next time she expects them to be Number One, which reminds everyone of how Sung-joon talks.

Ha-ri’s mom visits Hye-jin’s mom, her old friend, and shows her the jewelry that she’s been designing. Ha-ri’s mom says that she’s successful because she had the courage to leave a man she loved, but who didn’t love her, but that she regrets hurting Ha-ri. She’s been afraid to see her daughter until now, but she feels strong. She wants to take Ha-ri to live with her, but Ha-ri won’t even talk to her.

She texts Ha-ri to tell her that she’s leaving the country again in a few days, asking to see her before she goes. Ha-ri calls her back, and asks if she still makes that crab porridge she loves.

Hye-jin works late, until it’s just her and Sung-joon in the office. She makes some tea and asks him why he doesn’t discuss Most’s ranking with the team, and ask for their help. She’s concerned that he’s shouldering all the worry himself, so he angles for a hug to make him feel better. That makes Hye-jin nervous, and he backs off.

Later he searches Shin-hyuk’s employee file, and goes to the hotel where Shin-hyuk is staying. He sees Shin-hyuk leaving and the two go out for a drink, and Sung-joon asks why Shin-hyuk lives in a hotel.

He also asks if Shin-hyuk plans to go work for New Look, but Shin-hyuk doesn’t know either. Sung-joon asks him flat-out to stay at Most, even though he used to annoy him, because they need him. He tells Shin-hyuk that Most Korea is in danger of being shut down, so they need him to stay.

But Shin-hyuk doesn’t come to work the next day either, and everyone assumes he’s abandoned them. He doesn’t answer when Hye-jin calls him, and a strange man calls her right back and asks for her by name. He’s looking for Ha-ri, who suddenly turned in her resignation this morning.

Hye-jin rushes home, but all of Ha-ri’s personal things are gone. There’s a to-do list on her bed, outlining that she’s quitting her job, selling her car, and closing her accounts. Hye-jin remembers Ha-ri saying that she should disappear, and a neighbor confirms that she left today with all her things.

Hye0jin takes a cab to the airport, but can’t find her friend anywhere. She remembers a time when they were children, and Ha-ri had pushed an injured Hye-jin home in a shopping cart. Hye-jin had told her to leave her there and go get her mother, but Ha-ri had refused to go anywhere without her friend.

Distraught, Hye-jin calls out that Ha-ri can’t leave her like this. Crying her heart out, Hye-jin sits in the middle of the airport, and thinks to herself, “Ha-ri left me.”

COMMENTS

I love that there are so many different love stories in this show, and not all romantic ones. Yes, there’s the main love story between Sung-joon and Hye-jin, spanning the majority of their lives, but it’s also a friends’ love story. The love between Hye-jin and Ha-ri has just as many ups and downs, disappointments and betrayals, confessions and forgivenesses as any love between a man and a woman. More, in fact, than Sung-joon and Hye-jin, because they’ve literally spent their whole lives together. They even live together, and have been each other’s sole emotional support (and even financial support) for most of their lives. When Hye-jin says that Ha-ri is more than a friend for her, I believe her, and it makes sense that she’s Hye-jin’s primary priority. Sung-joon is an old friend too, and a first love, but there have been a couple of decades since they last saw each other. They don’t have the same kind of deep bond the two women have.

It’s touching that, when Hye-jin found out that Sung-joon didn’t talk to Ha-ri that night, the first thing Hye-jin did was run home to check on her friend. Even in the midst of reconnecting with her first love, her love for her friend carried just as much weight with her — more, in fact. And no matter how it can be argued that Ha-ri created her own heartbreak, she is heartbroken. She needs her understanding, loving best friend more than ever right now. It makes things that much more tragic that, even having that unconditional love and support from Hye-jin, Ha-ri can’t accept it out of her own feelings of guilt for betraying her friend.

But on the flip side, it’s sad that Hye-jin is willing to deny what she wants for her friend’s sake. I can see why she feels like she’d be taking the man her friend likes, but there’s such thing as being too selfless. After all, Sung-joon was her friend first, and her first love, first, not to mention how he feels about this and who he loves. And it seems like an extra slap in the face to find Ha-ri going back to her casual-dating ways so soon, when Hye-jin just hurt the man who loves her for her friend’s sake. It’s no wonder they fought, and it’s good to see that Hye-jin does have a threshold of what she’ll accept. Interesting that what she was upset about wasn’t what Ha-ri did with Sung-joon, but the way she acted like it was no big deal that she was in pain.

As for Sung-joon, I adore him for his honesty, and how he won’t accept anything less from Hye-jin. It’s not necessarily a strength all the time — it’s what made him say such hateful things ot her when they first met. Complete honesty can be a bad thing sometimes, but when he turns it on for a good purpose, it’s pretty powerful. It’s wonderful how he knows that Hye-jin isn’t being honest with him about why she’s backing away, and he doesn’t stop until he gets an honest answer in return. He’s not even pushy or intrusive about it, just gently insistent that he deserves the truth. His biggest fault can also be his greatest asset, and it’s wonderful to see a drama hero say No, we’re not doing to have misunderstandings or secrets, we’re going to talk about this like people who care about each other.

It’s so sad to see that, instead of solving all the miscommunication and confused feelings issues, the revealing of Hye-jin’s true identity has only created more problems. Luckily, two of the three people involved have a history of being honest and willing to talk things out, so surely they’ll be able to straighten out this mess before long. If only they can stop Ha-ri from running away, again.

I don't like the way Ha Ri cowardly run before have courage to explain everything and its just make Hye Jin more miserable than before.
I'm kinda full with too selfless act, Hye Jin and Seung Joon likes each other and they deserve together, the brokenhearted sides should accept the fact.
I am always afraid because I'm so bored with the "I love him, but my friends loves him too, so I just step aside and let her have him"act. If it is love then they should fight it.
But I really wanna give bear hug for Si won's character. He's so adorable from the start and it's breaking my heart bit see him like that.
I love reading this recap on this blog. :)

Hye Jin made me want to cut her today. I don't have time for her noble idiocy. Just because she is willing to give him up does not mean he is automatically going to fall for her self-destructive best friend. This must be Sung Joon's karma for being an ass for three episodes, which the show conveniently glossed over as he is near perfect now. "If you give me a hug, I might get energized." "Because of you, I'm not okay." Is he trying to kill me?

Does Sung Joon not remember Hari from his childhood? His family moved into her family's house, and Little Hye Jin must have mentioned her best friend to him. He seemed to interrogate Hari without recognizing her name. Since Sung Joon practically grew up in Hye Jin's house, shouldn't he have noticed a resemblance between pre-makeover Hye Jin and his future father-in-law? I am glad Hye Rin now calls him "oppa." I was confused why she used to call him "ahjussi" since I would think unni's chingu equals oppa. And in the words of Ahn Yo Na: "If you're handsome, you're my oppa."

I teared up when Hari wrote "I will sincerely be rooting for you and Hye Jin" in her letter. I am so spoiled by the Misaeng heart-lights that I am going to expect them in every drama from now on. They made our first loves' reunion so romantic. Last week's baseball preemption really threw off She Was Pretty's schedule. Episode 11 is a classic odd-numbered episode -- frustrating plot with no cliffhanger but will redeem itself tomorrow -- while Episode 10 was the mother of all cliffhangers. I cannot sympathize with Hye Jin's bawling in the airport because obviously Hari is not leaving. Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

Just one thing, I do get why Hye Jin feels that way. I don't think she's giving up on SJ, just for her its not the right time for to happy. Though I wouldnt be like her, I'd go running to SJ 100% but would still feel bad for her friend knowing she's hurting I think that's why HJ wanted Hari to explain herself, to clear everything up. Wanting Hari to have her closure, a start so she can move on. 'Cause from what Hari showed? Uh, no honey, you ain't gonna be moving on from this for quite a while.

I wish Hye Jin just bloody explained that in the first place. My best friend's in love with you, now is not the right timing.

Then pretending she only sees him as a childhood friend and doesn't want to get stuck in the past love. All that bullshit was the frustrating part and I honestly wanted to cut her too. Good thing he could see through it, though it's not at all hard to do.

Yes agree to that, I think Ive commented this somewhere in the page. She could have told it right away. But then they resolved it in the end right, they had a good talk.

I guess writers wanted to add up a drama. LOL

This episode was such a spotlight for SJ. Still swooning. Hahaha

Yeah I guess it did give SJ the opportunity to say some pretty swoony lines, not gonna lie LOL.

Dude I'm glad i'm not the only one feel this way. Seeing how HJ act in this episode piss me off! Especially when SJ is telling her he likes her no matter what. All she did was stare at him like a cold fish!!! At least give him a thank you or tear up a bit for his patience and honesty. I too agree she should of just told him in the first place instead of the bullsh!t.

First he doesn't deserve to be treated like this and also what does she expect SJ to act the thought of HR...come one now she is a complete stranger to him. I know the show is aiming about good friends but the only good friend I think is SJ. Everyone else seems to wrap up in their selfish thought and little kid act.

I'll be so mad if the drama drag out their postpone love and even worst if SJ have to wait even longer...like if eps12 comes back with a..1 year later start:( Please dont.....

All I can say is there better be some good couple time and makeup for HJ cold attitude on the last 5 episode!!!

Yeah it bugged me when he was saying all that emotional stuff, how she's always been the only one for him and that he can't see her any other way. And she was just...dismissive of it? it was annoying! Luckily it was only one episode if it dragged any longer I might have imploded.

lmao if the drama just went the time skip route that would be hilariously frustrating. Let's not visit clicheville writers~

Yeah they're in dire need of couple time in my opinion. People were saying the two mains had a lot of chemistry in KMHM, which I didn't finish, but I haven't seen it really utilized yet. I hope they can resolve the drama plot points while still developing their relationship based on the now and not their past.

0

But how can you tell that she's not leaving though? Cuz I actually assumed that she would leave. Think about it. The drama is 16 episodes and at episode 11, the truth is out and now we have the main pairing at the point where they both know they like each other. How are we going to stretch it? Enter angst. Useless, annoying angst. Angst that is so fucking stupid, all I can think of is where is Joon-hee (Answer me 1997) when you need him. I think Hye-Jin needs to hear what Joon-Hee told Yoon-Jae. Just because someone you love likes the girl (or in this case boy) you love does not mean that you should pull away from the person. For crying out loud! It's not Seong-Joon's fault that Ha-ri has only met jackasses her entire life and fell for his decent self. I am so angry I can scream. I spent the entire time fast-forwarding the later part of the episode. Noble Idiocy pisses me off, big time. And convenient of Ha-ri to take off after the bullshit she pulled. It's her taking the bloody easy way out. She can't deal with the guilt of the nonsense she's caused and rather than stick around to actually apologize and fix things, she runs away like a coward. I can't deal. Urgh!!!!!!

Even if Hari does leave, she will return eventually (and most likely end up with Shin Hyuk whom she does NOT deserve), so either way, I cannot sympathize with Hye Jin. This is just hair-pulling manufactured angst which I hate. Hari leaving (or hiding) is going to put Hye Jin in an even bigger funk, which will make her pull away from Sung Joon even farther.

Your rage directed against Hari is how I felt towards Hye Jin this episode. Every time she broke Sung Joon's precious little heart, I wanted to strangle her. Hold his fucking hand! Give him a fucking hug! Stop fucking lying to him!!

In hindsight, I wish there had been another baseball game to prevent Episode 11 from airing this week, which would have saved us a week of frustration. I am so livid at everyone not named Sung Joon that I don't even look forward to watching the next episode.

In dramas you really hardly see that the second lead guy falls for another woman after beimg recected by the heroine, cause that would make the heroine appear less attractive, less admirable and the love conflict less dramatic.

Thank you! So many people are looking forward to her ending up with Shin Hyuk and I'm all, Hell NO! That girl does not deserve him. Oh no. Especially that expression he had on his face when he realized that Ha-ri stole her best friend's identity to have some one-sided affair with her best friend's first love who came back looking for said best friend. Oh no. Ha-ri deserves to spend the rest of her life making amends. If not for the fact thatI have a feeling that Hye-jin will spend the time she's away pushing Seong-Joon away, I would have said she should take her time with coming back.

On to Hye-Jin. I'm with you on that one. Gosh I wanted to bitch slap her so hard, hoping to reset her brains. Like seriously?! If she was pushing Seong-Joon away because of his terrible behavior at the beginning, I would have understood. But, she's not pushing him away because of that? She's pushing him away because her best friend used him (I will never get on board the Ha-ri was in love, Ha-ri is heartbroken train!). Think about it. She's never had a true relationship and manipulated his memories with his best friend and first love to feel what she has dreamed of feeling, with no consideration for him whatsoever. I mean come on! She even stole the puzzle piece to make her false identity more compelling and then made him feel bad for falling for another person when in his head, he's always assumed that because he and Hye-Jin got along so well as kids and he'd liked her then, they would be a couple as adults. And now, if he can't put Most no the number one spot, he will have to leave without having any relationship memories with Hye-Jin. Why? Because Ha-ri has taken away the last two months, months that he could have spent with Hye-Jin. The guy has suffered and now Hye-Jin just seems to be punishing him for her friend liking him.

Right now, I wish Shin-Hyuk wasn't leaving or interested romantically with her. That way, Hye-Jin could have confided in him and he could have set her ass straight, because I think someone outside their triangle is most likely the one needed to get her head straight.

Not looking forward to the next episode if it's going to be like this as well. Can't spend an hour yelling at my screen. Just can't.

"Right now, I wish Shin-Hyuk wasn’t leaving or interested romantically with her. That way, Hye-Jin could have confided in him and he could have set her ass straight, because I think someone outside their triangle is most likely the one needed to get her head straight."

I have always felt this way. Despite all of the silliness, and joking around, Shin Hyuk has always been a great observer of people and good advise giver. He was pretty level headed, all the joking aside. I really loved him as an older brother to Hye-Jin. Then he just had to get feelings for her and they got in the way. :( , Ugh, dramas! Which is why we still watch... ;)

Yes, don't agree that everyone needs to be paired off. It seems that Shin Hyuk knows many girls like Ha-ri, which made it easy to understand her selfish motivation. Hye Jin is unique and that was her attraction.

you nailed it...so annoyed with HJ

@Itenoria

Wow, most of what you say is right. But you forget that we have an advantage of omniscient point of view. The characters don't.

Sung Joon: He has had a personality transplant. The show took it too far in his portrayal of a cold person, without giving any explanation for why he became like that. They could have just shown that he adopted the personality of a hard taskmaster to shake off the inertia of Most staff. Other than that he has been the sanest person on the show given how he is being played around. Other folks here are calling him slow, but how many of you second guess the identity of a person in front of you? He heads a fashion magazine, not the CIA.

Ha Ri: She did a favor for a friend and got pulled into this. She liked the guy for who he was, and lets not forget that while she was falling for him, Hye-Jin was hating him. She got conflicted only when she came to know Hye-Jin also liked him. The puzzle piece was a low point for her, but she is the second lead, so she gets the low points. As she has been reiterating and we all know too, this identity theft was only temporary, there is no way she could have pulled off a con.

Hye-Jin: The bright side of her noble idiocy is that she is concerned for her friend. For those of you being too hard on her for it, do you forget a lifetime of friendship after one betrayal? Its not as if Ha ri had an affair with her husband. Sung Joon was someone who was a non entity to them till two months ago. So like her cut, lets cut ha ri some slack.

On the bad side in all of this, is Hye-Jin's treatment of Sung Joon. Its good he was preconditioned to love her, because anyone else would have been hopping mad. Firstly, her mad cap scheme for Ha ri to impersonate her. Then, not disclosing her identity to Sung Joon. And worst of all, pushing him away without an explanation. Girl, you need to give equal respect to Sung Joon's feelings like you give all others (Ha ri, Shin Hyuk) especially if you consider him your one true love. Yes, I get it that you too are dealing with guilt issues, but running away from Sung Joon puts you in the same boat as Ha ri who ran away from you.

0

Most of the folks here must have seen "The Princess' Man" where this kind of deception was there, but the winner there was Ha ri. Just an example to show how our feelings are manipulated by perspectives of the love-triangle setup.

0

Kudos for saying it as it is. If I were Hye Jin, I would ask HaRi to sit down with me and gently, very gently ask her: "Would you want me to feel as miserable as you? Would you want me to drag down Sung Joon into misery, too? Because I will if that is what you want." Let me see how she would answer that!

Yeah, this was a bit of a none sense noble idiocy on Hye Jin's part. She's like borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. She's willing to hurt Sung Joon's feelings by friend-zoning him just so she doesn't end up hurting her best friend Ha Ri's feelings. None of it makes sense at all to me especially since Sung Joon has no interest in Ha Ri whatsoever. Ha Ri being heartbroken sucks but she knew this was the end result anyways since she can't even get SJ to like her when he thought she was Hye Jin. It would have been bad if Sung Joon started having feeling for Ha Ri but that was never the case.

i can understand your reaction, and i was frustrated with hye-jin too when she just did a complete 180 with seong-joon the next day without an explanation, but ultimately i don't think she's being a Noble Idiot. the Noble Idiocy vibes definitely lessened when hye-jin and ha-ri FINALLY argued, and when hye-jin and seong-joon FINALLY had a honest conversation about hye-jin's behaviour. the thing is, imagine if you had a friend like ha-ri (who i personally don't like but whatever) who's been with you through all the good times and bad, has been your best friend since birth, and is so ingrained in your life that she's become more like a sister to you than an ordinary friend. and then you realise that this friend likes the guy you like. wouldn't you feel guilty about being happy with him at this point in time too? i think it's more to do with hye-jin's immediate reaction of being reluctant to jump into the arms of a guy who's just broken her best friend's heart than a conscious thought that she's choosing to give up on him forever. i feel like it's more to do with the fact that she feels that this isn't the right time to begin such a relationship with him, out of respect for ha-ri's feelings. and while i don't really like ha-ri, i do appreciate how the two women's friendship takes precedence over the romance. it's heartwarming to see. :)

I have no issue with Hye-Jin's feelings about entering a relationship with the trainwreck from Ha Ri still littering the tracks. Neither does Sung Joon, who once he wormed the truth out of Hye-Jin immediately understood the issue. What was really, really annoying was the fact that Hye-Jin was withholding information. Like most Noble Idiots, she wrapped herself in the mantle of being a martyr for the Greater Good, without realizing that she was selfishly determining what was "good" for everyone else involved and not allowing other people a well-informed say in their own futures.
Thank heavens Sung Joon got her to tell the truth, I was about ready to strangle her. I can stand the screaming, I can stand the over-the-top expressions of joy and sorrow that are her trademark - but this constant keeping people in the dark 'for their own good' has got to stop. It's not being nice, its being controlling, manipulative, and egotistical.

yep, that's what i meant. i was annoyed with her too when she decided to treat him as a former classmate instead of just telling him the truth, but once seong-joon got her to do that, i was fine with her actions. what i'm saying is that i don't think her decision to not start a relationship with seong-joon stems from noble idiocy.

Strangely enough, I do have a best friend like that. Heck, if she was in surgery and needed a kidney, I wouldn't think twice about offering up one of my kidneys to ensure that Oke gets better. But the thing is, she would do the same for me. What makes our friendship strong and one so long lasting is that we both know we've got each other's backs. But in this drama, I've seen Hye-Jin have Ha-ri's back so many times (when she was down with her many oppas, when she was ill, when she was in a new relationship, etc) and I've not seen Ha-ri have her back in as many times (other than when she heeled that guy's toe for talking thrash about her friend. Her taking Hye-Jin's place for the first meeting with Seong-Joon doesn't count for me because of how she ended up stealing Hye-Jin's identity: what she did is identity theft). It made me see that Hye-Jin gave more in that relationship and that is what is pissing me off. And in the one time that Ha-ri could come clean, and try and fix the mess she made of things, she took off. Knowing fully well that Seong-Joon would be leaving in a month. It's not enough for you to wish the couple well. if you did something to fuck things up, then it's up to you to fix it (I'm thinking Brooke going back to create the date for Nathan and Hayley in One Tree Hill Season 1, after she ruined things between them. That's what a friend does. She thinks oh how can I fix this and steps into the situation to fix what she broke.) That's my beef with this.

Ha Ri was the sole breadwinner in their "relationship". They explained that Hye Jin wasn't even contributing to their rent until she got a job and even then Ha Ri refused to accept it.
Also she helped when Hye Jin had no idea what to do when she was pushed into the "Most" team. I'm not sure why everyone seems to have a hive mind around here but everyone loves to exaggerate Ha Ri's position. She was selfish and did shitty stuff. She knows that - everyone knows that. That's what their argument was about. That Hye Jin was acting too nice and Ha Ri was passive about her feelings. Ha Ri is 100% aware of what she's done. I don't know why everyone says she didn't try to explain either... When she did and Seong Joon cut her off and ran the second he knew the truth. (I don't blame him, but that's what happened.) So it's not that she refused to explain, but SJ did not care to hear it from her.

Hye Jin was frustrating in this episode for Added Angst but how she explained it made sense. She loves Seong Joon too, but to her its not worth having her best friend hurt over it. All she wants is for Ha Ri to have closure before she can (with a clear mind) start anything else with Seong Joon. That makes perfect sense to me. I took years to get over my break up. Let her cry over it and run from it. That's what happens with these things. You guys act like you've never experienced heart break before..

+10000000 Exactly what I've been thinking all this while.

0

See that's the thing. I still take issue with her 'explaining'. She started to talk about it, Seong-Joon walked out (because he had to think and that is understandable). My problem is after that one time, when she was caught in the act, we weren't shown her trying to reach out to Seong-joon to explain what happened. My problem is that she tried to talk about it once, in the heat of the moment, and then never tried again. If she had decided that she couldn't face him, I would have been alright with her just sending him a mail explaining what happebed or not tearing that letter and sending it to him. She did neither, and that is my problem. A half-assed attempt to explain is not the same as going the distance.

I actually did get Hye-jin needing space. What everyone is complaining about is that it wasn't until Seong-Joon pushed that she then admitted that that was what she wanted. Initially, she was coating it as it was first love, it's time to let go of their schoolyard crush, etc, and that was not cool. She needs time, I get it. But she should have been upfront about it. If Seong-Joon had been the kind of person to not push and just accepted her words at face value, that would have been a whole set of problems.

0

Yesss! +1000

yeah, pretty much sums up why i don't like ha-ri. if one of my friends did what she did, i wouldn't be able to think the same way about them, because essentially what she's doing is running away. she's ashamed and she can't bring herself to accept hye-jin's forgiveness which is understandable, but throughout the entire course of this drama, she has been deliberately prolonging her deceit despite knowing that it's wrong, avoiding opportunities for explanations and failing to fix her mistakes. and now that the truth is out, she just leaves. making mistakes is fine, but if you can't put in the effort to fix them if you feel sorry about making them, then it sure as hell looks like you care more about your cowardice than your friendship.

although not liking ha-ri doesn't stop me from admiring how the drama is handling their friendship. i'm not that emotionally invested, but it's nice to see.

I think most people are forgetting the conversation that Sung Joon and Hye Jin had at her parent's home. She clearly, if the subtitles are correct said to him that Ha-Ri likes him a lot, she is in a lot of pain. She can't come to him right now with her best friend of years is in so much pain. She said right now, she never asked him to give it up or go to Ha-Ri. She asked for time from Sung Joon. I was afraid that we are headed for a noble idiocy of the Fated to Love You kind but everybody was actually actively trying to resolve issues one way or the other except for sadly Ha-Ri. She chose to run out of her guilt but that may not be a bad thing. Ha-Ri has abandonment issues of epic proportions and with her mother showing up she has some chance at growing. I still don't want to justify her actions but she is human, fragile and not perfect. I am hopeful this won't go to waste. As for Sung Joon and Hye Jin, they have both been given some actual space by both of our second leads, I hope the writer don't waste it on misunderstandings and use it as an opportunity for the two to connect again. Its a situation that can be utilized both ways so its up to the writers now.
On a lighter note, Shin Hyuk, I will come to you Oppa, don't be sad. Boarding the plain for korea right now!

Yes to this! I don't know where people are getting the idea that Hye-jin is sacrificing Sung-joon so he can be with Ha-ri. Why are we underestimating Hye-jin at this point? Why would she push Sung-joon to be with someone who he clearly doesn't know or would want to know after all the pretending? Why would she push Ha-ri to be with someone who doesn't love her, who clearly loves someone else?

I remember the conversation. How I could forget arguably the most swoon-worthy scene in the entire drama? But Sung Joon had to painfully prod the reason out of her. Every time he asked her why she was acting like this on the rooftop, in his office, and at her parents' house, she fed him bullshit excuses of only seeing him as a classmate and "let's just preserve the memory of our first love." If not for Sung Joon's persistence, knowing Hye Jin's self-sacrificing nature, she would never have told him the real reason. Did she not read Hari's letter that explicitly stated she is sincerely rooting for her and Sung Joon? If the situation were reversed and Sung Joon had developed feelings for Hari, Hye Jin would have unequivocally stepped aside and emphatically encouraged her best friend to pursue happiness.

I would have been less irate had Hye Jin told Sung Joon point-blank to give her time, but because she one-sidedly put on a ruse to distance herself from him, she was practically giving him up. She was willing to risk Sung Joon moving on and dating someone else. Admittedly, I had been angry at Hye Jin for a couple of episodes now for not telling him the truth even after he bloody confessed to her, so this rant was an accumulation of my frustration at her wishy-washiness and for her hurting Puppy.

+1 both leads are doing things honestly and with more sanity . It would have been really weird if Hye jin and sung joon went into relationship directly without thinking about others, that would have made hye jin no better than Ha ri who ultimately thinks only about herself (My first love, my parent problem, my guilt its always about her ).
I am glad the required noble idiocy (She could have just told Sung joon right away instead of all drama but its a drama so )went well and ended.

Park soe joon he is so hot even my mother (Who is never interested in K drama or comment on any actors ) was like this guy is really good looking and to me he so sweet mushy reminds me of marshmallow. (can we have more honest leads like not starting means honesty but sweet and understanding honesty)

I have never been so frustrated with shin hyuk I know his heart is broken and everything but He is acting like a child just like Ha ri what did Hye jin do to him she was honest with him from start never gave him false hope.(but I was pissed when she gave the money even as friend that was harsh)

how does Ha ri find a way to do wrong things at every right time when she could have done the right thing.
Ha ri (more) and shin hyuk (less) are just cowards who can't face the situations head on and ran away.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, but I guess what is getting to me is that Seong-Joon doesn't actually have that time. With Shin-Hyuk gone and the rest of the team not on their A-game, the possibility of them being number 1 keeps dwindling and we both know he only has a month left to stay in Korea. And that is something that both Hye-Jin and Ha-ri know. I'm not saying that they should date immediately and get married. But Hye-Jin pushing him off in the beginning without saying exactly what the problem is, grated on my nerves. And the fact that I know there isn't that much time isn't making things any better for me. Plus, Ha-ri leaving just adds to my frustration and annoyance.

But I agree. Shin Hyuk oppa, I will be your jackson. I shall put on freckles and although my hair is an afro and not Hye-Jin's otherwise straight-curly hair, I'm sure i can still do.

Hye Jin's noble idiocy really pissed me off too. Will join you behind cutting her.

Furthermore, she also humiliated Shin Hyuk by offering him the money for the hospital bill. Just because he told you he likes you, and you can't accept his feelings, doesn't mean that you need to do such things to draw such a clear painful line across his heart to hurt his feelings. They are still 'brother and sister' even before the confession right? Pity the man and his weary sigh when he handed her the bill back.

When Hye Jin kept hurting Seung Joon with false words instead of just telling him the truth, I really felt so pissed I wanted to tell Seung Joon to just give up on her. Even if she can't accept him because her friend likes him too. She doesn't need to say things that are not true to complicate the matter right?

People keep saying that SJ was rude and didn't even give HaRi a chance to explain, But again, He didn't want to waste any more time finding his real Hye Jin. The explanation didn't even matter to him. He was already choking up when he asked her if the real Hye Jin is who he thinks she is.

I also have to add that SJ came back to Korea to specifically find his umbrella. 2 of the 3 months have been wasted on this person who claimed she was Hye Jin. Time was of the essence to him. I could make a list like this for Sung-joon too, but we already know of his assy behavior. But I could also make lists of how they both treated her kindly.

The point is, both guys have faults and both are pretty awesome. Why do we dwell on one guy's faults and completely ignore the other's? Can we love one character more without tearing the other one apart?

And people hating on HJ for not liking back SH are ridiculous. She never gave him false hope and told him about her feelings towards SJ since the beginning, he even witnessed how BOTH of them had feelings for each other.
I just hope that in her desire to give more drama, the writer doesn't make HJ and SH date each other so that HJ could drive away SJ to make herself feel better about HR.

+1. Agree with your observation. Shin Hyuk is not perfect either by any means. And yes, although we could make a list on how SJ has been an ass vs. how SH's been an ass (that would be like 2:1), what's most important is the fact in SJ's actions, he's making up for it now. He was an ass before, but he's not much of one now, which is important. People also tend to forget that SJ and the other chars in this show are flawed and nowhere near saintly, and so for people to easily throw crap at HR at SJ, and not blink an eye over HJ or SH's actions is not fair.

It seems like in this lifelong friendship, Hye-Jin has been fully in and acted as somewhat of a substitute mother for Hari, who aside from pushing her friend up a hill in a cart that one time, has been more than happy to accept Hye-Jin's love, but when push comes to shove, has always placed herself first. Even telling the truth to SJ was in the form of a love confession-- which you know, she probably had some glimmer of hope would go her way.

With her curly hair and rosy cheeks, Hye-Jin has not been competition for Hari their entire adult lives. But now that they are both conventionally attractive, Hari doesn't want to deal with an even playing field.

I feel like the show is skirting around something interesting with this though, which is the pretty girl, with less attractive friend dynamic. But now, post-makeover, it seems like any of the commentary about beauty have been pushed aside in favor of romcom angst.

Agree with you. One of the most frustrating episodes.
Really! Ha Ri has kept putting off.. another day.. another day never came to come clean with Sung Joon. Instead, she got caught red-handed. Isn't it reasonable for Sung Joon give her the brush off?
Although, I think Sung Joon is not totally blameless because he kept going out with her even when there were clues that she wasn't the real Hye Jin.
Ha Ri ran way and didn't have the courage to face the inevitable consequences of her deception, so Hye Jin is left in limbo. So how can she accept Sung Joon when it is unresolved with Ha Ri?
I don't feel sorry for Ha Ri at all. Hye Jin back pedaled her feeling for Sung Joon which was totally dumb because she took off anyway. Ha Ri was TOTALLY selfish especially when Hye Jin thought she was like a member of her family!
Hye Jin is really starting to act dumb again too. I wanted to kick Hye Jin for giving Shin Hyuk back the $50 too. Poor guy..isn't that insulting after he asked her for a chance?

On the other hand Ha Ri pretty much supported HJ - including food and rent - for apparently years.

I read a lot of translated comments about people being frustrated with Hye-jin and it's understandable that it's always frustrating to be at this point in a drama and reach the Noble Idiocy stage, but I also completely understand Hye-jin here. I personally feel like it's NOT Noble Idiocy in the sense that we've been given a good build-up for what Ha-ri and Hye-jin mean to each other, and Ha-ri's been AS MUCH (if not more, since she's been around the entire time) of a friend of Hye-jin's as Sung-joon was. Which is what Sung-joon understands as well, because he's been her friend and he knows what that means. Ha-ri genuinely means that much to Hye-jin, and Ha-ri's made some unfortunate choices, but it's clear that Hye-jin means that much to her as well, we've been shown so many glimpses of how they've stuck together through the years, how much they've supported, encouraged each other and continue to.

And even now I'd say their "break-up" is not because of Sung-joon, it's because Ha-ri personally feels so guilty about what she did that she can't stand Hye-jin being her usual self and gaining forgiveness which she feels doesn't deserve (guilty enough that she's previously been hospitalised for its effects). Usually noble idiocy involves completely ridiculous reasons, which could easily be resolved through communication, but here, it feels to me like a genuine dilemma, in that I don't see Sung-joon/Hye-jin mattering MORE to Hye-jin than Hye-jin/Ha-ri. Usually it's like it you love the guy, you should fight the odds for him-- but what if you don't love the guy over and above the best friend? It might not make her happier to be with Sung-joon if Ha-ri was hurt, which means her act isn't purely sacrificial. And Ha-ri clearly doesn't want to stand in their way, but also can't help the way she feels, and Hye-jin is acknowledging that, and I personally find that interesting. I love their relationship, I love that it's centralised and important (maybe more important than romantic love) and I've always found the Ha-ri hate OTT. I think the opinion was pretty unanimous that Ha-ri shouldn't have gone after Sung-joon knowing he was Hye-jin's first love (legit not even current or ex), so why would Hye-jin go all-out for a guy knowing Ha-ri feels deeply about him. Just because the public perception of Ha-ri changed doesn't necessarily mean Hye-jin lost their years of friendship and unconditional love as well.

Romantic love is always posited as all-important in dramas, so I love that we're getting other kinds of love that may even trump it.

Yeah Ive been lurking on other sites too. They really hate what HJ in this episode.

HJ did a noble thing, *hand down* I love her and so proud of her. And I do agree, its not an idiocy, its a selfless act wc only few people would do in the real world. It's HJ showing how she values different kinds of love.

What...selfless??? She LIED to Sung Joon. She told him she only cared for him as a childhood friend, she laughed at the idea of a lasting first love to HIS FACE. She hurt his feelings, left him confused and angry and upset. She did her "noble" and "selfless" act without considering his feelings or acknowledging his rights at all. She was all wrapped up in being co-dependent for Ha Ri's issues, so she was deceptive, manipulative, and uncaring about his feelings. That is not selfless nor noble.

Selfless and noble was meant for her not jumping into a relationship with SJ right away.

Come on, SJ saw right through her, he didn't believed her one bit. Id call her selfish if she was happy with how she dealt with it, but she's also upset and SJ again noticed that. That's the only mistake she did, she could have told him right away, but they had a conversation and cleaned everything up. So why not give her a chance? She's not perfect, everyone makes a lot of mistakes. She didn't drag it for so long too, so why the hate? I mean so much hate?

I understand her reason for doing it but her method really sucked though. Why couldn't she just tell Sung Joon what is going on instead of doing a 180 on him and making him feel miserable? There was no reason for Hye Jin to keep that information from Sung Joon.

I kind of understand that, I think. It's possible that Hye-jin felt it wasn't her secret to tell? Ha-ri likes Sung-joon so much that she's heartbroken and crying over him-- it'd be kind of strange for Hye-jin to admit that outright, because that's what Ha-ri feels deeply, personally, and she might not want Sung-joon to know about it. Especially considering that she didn't even want Hye-jin to know and kept trying to put on a brave face and lying, till Hye-jin found the letter and saw her crying. Ha-ri couldn't admit everything outright in the beginning of the mixup because the secret was Hye-jin's, Hye-jin couldn't admit it outright now because the secret is Ha-ri's.

Also, imo, admitting it outright would also have come off as a little OTT saintly/sacrificial, in that "I like you but we can't be together because my bff also likes you, so I'm sacrificing my love for her." So I like that Hye-jin took the circuitous route and tried to keep Ha-ri out of the reasons they couldn't be together, it shows how much she values Ha-ri and her feelings. It would have made Ha-ri look sad and alone in the eyes of her love interest, and honestly nobody wants someone they like to see them that way. Hye-jin only legit said it when her hand was forced and she could see Sung-joon was extremely hurt too, and she didn't want to unnecessarily do that either.

Well-said, Zoe! I literally agree with every single point you just made. The writer of this show is eking out the nuances of a friendship with Hye-jin and Ha-ri rather than going with the obvious, trite "fighting over a guy" situation that is so unnecessary in this show. Thanks for everything you said here!

"After all, Sung-joon was her friend first, and her first love, first, not to mention how he feels about this and who he loves."

Nah. Ha Ri was her first friend. they were practically attached at the hip since babies because their mothers were best friends. so they have basically spent their lives together sans those few years when Ha Ri stayed in Japan.

That's why i am not surprised or angry that Hye Jin chose not to accept Sung Joon yet.
Ha Ri is like a sister to her and if you knew your sister is huring, how could jump straight into Sung Joon's arm?

but Hye Jin is truly a saint. how could she resist Sung Joon's smiles and charms? her resistance level is as strong as Buddha's. if i was her, i would be swooning left and right.

anyway i really love the reunion scenes. so beautiful an well directed. both Park Seo Joon & Hwang Jung Eum are awesome.

i also love how Sung Joon was not mad or angry at Hye Jin like usual k-drama style. he didn't care about the lies and he was simply happy that he finally found his Kim Hye Jin.

Dear k-drama God, give me a Sung Joon in my life please (Shin Hyuk is fine too).

It doesn't matter who was "first" but to cherish all relationships. No one is suggesting that Hye-Jin jump into bed with Sung Joon and pretend that Ha Ri never existed, but lying to him is not the answer either.

but telling Sung Joon straight away that Ha Ri likes him alot is embarrassing for Ha Ri too. how could Hye Jin tell Sung Joon easily like that? we are talking about Ha Ri's feelings here. she's a person too. it's actually not Hye Jin's right to tell Sung Joon about Ha Ri's feelings. it's Ha Ri's secret. Ha Ri didn't even want to admit to Hye Jin that she likes Sung Joon.

so there was nothing Hye Jin can do except lying. i admire Hye Jin for that. she has never been a selfish person & she is always understanding. isn't that one of the main reasons why all of us love HYE JIN and always rooting for her from the start of episode? why everyone is hating her now for the same reason we love her?

i'm dying to see Hye Jin and Sung Joon together too but we can't deny that Ha Ri is also tangled up in this relationship as well.

I think every one in this drama have characteristic as main lead, Hari and Shin Hyuk is melodrama lead while Hye Jin and Sung joon in Rom com lead, each character with diff interaction can be pilot to another type a drama,

Just like how Hye jin is just a "peeping girl" since the starts,
out of OTP things, I think this drama is more focus about the character,
1st obstacle in HarixHye jin including men,
1st obstacle Sungjoonxwork including woman
1st obstacle of Shin hyuk & Hari that finally fall in love,

so I think every one is lead if you take their POV cause they had this well rounded interaction which each other

They've all been the peeping girl, IIRC.

Hye-Jin when she sees Sung-Joon hug Ha-Ri (as Hye-Jin).

Sung-Joon when he saw her getting a piggy-back ride from Shin-Hyuk.

Shin-Hyuk when sees Sung-Joon--Hye-Jin hug in the rain.

Ha-Ri, I don't recall a scene where she's literally peeping at Hye-Jin--Sung-Joon, but she's been the peeping girl since Episode 3.

Nah. Shin-Hyuk/Si-Won is completely irrelevant to the OTP. You could completely take him out of the drama and it would barely affect them (except that it'd much, much less funnier) -- unwittingly encouraging Ha-Ri to go on with ruse is the only significant thing he's done in this drama up till now.

Hye-Jin doesn't even seem to register him as a man and this Episode 11. All the while Sung-Joon and Hye-Jin are essentially portrayed as soulmates. Even if Shin-Hyuk had realized his feelings earlier or tried to woo her more seriously, I still doubt she'd be with him. He doesn't "get" her on a fundamental level. You can see the effect Sung-Joon has on her when he calls while she's with Shin-Hyuk. Hwang Hung-Eum carried that scene really well, it's like the rest of the world (including Shin-Hyuk) except Sung-Joon stopped existing for her at that moment.

+1 to your point, Perra.

Remember also when Sung-joon and Hye-jin were talking outside the house, and Sung-joon mentioned that at first he thought their problem was because of Shin-hyuk but then he realized, it's not the case. Hye-jin agreed on that part and didn't even protest because she really does not feel that way for Shin-hyuk. I think, if anything, Hye-jin really sees him as an oppa. Yes, he is there for her all the time, but I don't see it as the sole reason for a girl to fall for a guy. Hye-jin SEES his worth in her life (remember, episode 10? She told him she's lucky she has a friend like him that she can talk to). Also, I just remembered: In an earlier episode, Shin-hyuk talked about a dongsaeng who died. Hye-jin was totally empathetic with him, but it turned out that this dongsaeng was a dog. Okay, that was funny, but I do think that it's one of the reasons why Hye-jin can't really take him seriously every time he confesses. And the fact that the guy is always in search for "fun" says quite a lot about him. So, yeah, I appreciate his soft and serious side, but contrary to everything that's been said about him, I don't think he's on that level with Sung-joon.

and by "on that level," I meant the kind of sincerity. These two guys both have their own way of showing their sincerity, but I think it's pretty apparent that given two choices: sincerity layered with joke OR honest and straightforward sincerity, the latter shoots straight to the heart.

I agree that Shin Hyuk was never a serious contender for Hye Jin's heart, but he does play an important secondary part in the story even if it is just the confidant.

We learnt many things about Hye Jin. Ha Ri and Sung Joon through conversations they had with Shin Hyuk.

Whether real or only perceived, the rival is essential to any romance drama. Otherwise it would just be two people deciding to go out, where is the drama in that?

Thank you HBB for finding that blog. I'm not crazy! I agree so much with what they said. I keep reading everyone's reactions, all the while thinking that she'll end up with Shin-Hyuk given that very first scene with Sung-Joon and Shin-Hyuk with that Renoir painting. The way they framed it, the main character can change perspective, and then Sung-Joon walks away and Shin-Hyuk walks forward. It seems like a hint to me, though I may be mistaken. I am really rooting for Shin-Hyuk but I don't mind Sung-Joon either. At least I know I'm not alone in my thoughts about the hidden message in the drama.

This was an absolutely EXCELLENT article about why SWP may be the real lead. If any drama were to break the mold of the main couple ending up together, this drama is poised to do it. However, I will be really surprised if this happens, because, well, you know, it's still a k-drama.
One other point to consider in the POSSIBILITY that SWP is the main lead is that the reveal of Seung-joon happened awfully early in the drama to be typical. Having the reveal at the end of episode 10 and beginning of 11 left me immediately wondering, "Uh oh___this is so early! How is the drama going to create and prolong the romantic tension now?" We are in for some major twists and turns over the final five episodes, with a lot of space and time to create some real drama and switches. There is definitely TIME for SWP to rise in the story in the real role of the main lead. I think he's the real owner of MOST.

Whatever happens, I've alway loved PSJ but now that I've discovered Siwon's brilliance as an actor, I am in awe and sort of in love with his power to play funny and serious. His intensity is seriously sexy and graceful. Gahhhh! And now he's going into the Army and will be seriously more manly and sexy when he re-emerges in two years. THEN, drama producers - we demand that you create a show for Siwon as the lead. In my opinion, he is so capable and amazing that he could be the next James Bond. Talk about swagger and sensuality and subtle, under-the-surface power paired with devastating good looks!!!

OK - back to reading the comments. I love She Was Pretty so much....second now to my love for Healer and Misaeng, Gaksital and Tree With Deep Roots!

Wasn't the 20th anniversary MOST theme suppose to be about the secondary characters in a fairy tale? Hye Jin's interview with the fairy tale authoress? I can see the analogy between Hye Jin & Shin Hyuk as the Peeping characters in the Renoir's painting. Don't know if this will be a fake out, but I hope Hye Jin becames a writer of fairy tales and ends up with Shin Hyuk because isn't in Kdramas, first loves never works out?

yeah me too. i thought that was rude and kind of harsh from her to do that.
the guy rode his bike, through pouring rain, becauce he thought hj had an accident. and then, he got into a serious accident himself.
so it was tough seeing hj handing him cash, like she didn't get his feeling for her. or didn't care that he came to rescue her....
that scene where hj begged her to give him a chance ,and sj calling hj to meet her , was one of the best of the drama ! loved the feeling of it so much !

I personnaly like that Hye-Jin still cares about Ha-Ri feelings. Sometimes friendship is just as important as romance and I think that if HJ can forgive SJ for the way he was with her, she can forgive HR.

I don't thinks she wants to hold off SJ forever but just wait a little until HR can resolve and explain herself properly to SJ.

Hari made the bad and immature decision (again) by leaving but maybe she will grow and learn from her mistakes.

I want to root for Hari and Hyejin's friendship so much because they are so sweet and caring with each other. Sometimes I feel like female friendship is often underrated in dramaland. There often can be no betrayal from a girl friend unless she is actually a villain with a (BIG) agenda.
Whereas bromance is enhanced, what with the boys doing each other theit worst and us still rooting for them to be friend and to cuddle and to joke and to hug (that School 2013 Bromance though).

I like that this drama is taking the stance of saying : Yes she made a mistake but they are still friend and they still love each other deeply.

Also, Shin-Hyuk. *heartbreak*

True. Relationships between female leads are often painted as black and white. It's either nothing special or pure rivalry. Where as even when the male leads dislike each other, we gush about a possible bromance. So I like what the writer is doing. I appreciate HJ's concerted effort to save their friendship despite my weariness of HR. And I like how the writer can do that.

Idk if it because they acted so well but I find that this is really tricky situation and I realize that I can't be the wise person from the start when facing a problem, there's amount of stupidity in some logic

I hope this is just for 1 episode cause I can bear the stupid phase when everything just go out of your hand, it's unavoidable, how can you directly became awesome person when facing problem you never had before,
the phase that convince you to stay in your comfort zone because it feels better at the moment.
All things that happen in HJ is because she just knew it just like how we all afraid of the confrontation for the week before.

I really like the contrast between HJ and HR in term of their bond, they shows the opposite and I hope it can make them learn,
you know, give me some episode when they hit or chase each other while screaming each other flaw and realize they should just stop this new problem in their friendship,

I also like the way SH change, well in make him more rounded as character even if it make him less likable, sung joon also way better because he already handle his problem early on, being wishy washy and conflicted alone now let them feeling conflicted,
just please next episode be great...., I still hate this uneven episode number cause I think the writer make each week as complete episode and now we got half of it

p.s, this is hella long, i had to stop myself cause i wanted to write more lol.

I genuinely loved ep 11 the more i watched it, it may have not been the fluffy cute ep i was expecting but it was interesting surprise for me nonetheless, although the focus was more on HR and HJ relationship, it was interesting to watch. Of course we had a moment of noble idiocy from HJ which fits with her characters selflessness nature but also highlights how that can be a flaw. Poor SJ had no idea what happened but he didnt give up or believe her answers. Before i get to HR and HJ, i have to say i loved how SJ couldn't handle being just classmates, he tried so hard, so much so that it was making him tear up. His so in love with her it hurts my heart.

What i love in this ep is how SJ instead of being angry at HJ was just so relived and happy, its like the chains that were shackling him disappeared and all the feelings were rushing out, he was trying not to cry in the car but failing completely . The part were SJ was saying “ i missed you.. Kim hye jin shi” and he kept going because HJ didnt understand “ its been a while... Jye jin ah” and i was like ahhhh, i loved those lines, its was such a awesome moment in itself and HJ reaction.

Their reunion on the streets had me all teary and so happy. SJ just kept apologizing and blaming himself for not recognizing her and jung eums acting here was really wonderful as well, its great when you have two excellent actors playing of each other, makes the scene more awesome. The scene felt so heart warming and sweet especially when we got to see little SJ and HJ together. Also SJ just couldnt keep his hands of her, touching her face and moving her hair.

HJ and her selflessness and kind nature, though she does view things stuff a little differently, but at the same time i understand even though HR dug her own grave. Like HJ said HR is more then a friend, she is family just as much as SJ is, both of them matter a lot to her. HJ has seen how HR is constantly going out with sleezy guys and putting her self down as well as her worth, so it must have been kind of big to actually like a guy, genuinely like him.also i feel like HJ understands more because she understands how lies can snowball until you cant handle it anymore and dont have the courage to. What i like is that when SJ and HJ were talking at her house outside, she wants to sort stuff out with HR before she can be happy and start something officially with SJ. And its wonderful to see SJ being so understanding, i agree his flaw can also be his biggest strength. He understands and HJ isnt sacrificing one relationship for another, its just HR is #1 priority right now cause thats the biggest problem at the moment. HR is such a mess and seems to be really damaged just like her mum she is running away, i felt bad for her, she seems to genuinely be hurting as well, and she doesnt understand why HJ isnt mad, although i think HJ was mad when she had a little burst...

my whole comment dint post. ok continuation..

HR before changing. Seems like both HR and SH are running away, SH seems seems like his down int he dumps cause HJ doesnt feel the same as him, i have a feeling he will come back, but it would be a shocker if he doesnt

Also i totally loved SJ, he was so great in this ep, i want 10 of him thanks. His such a little schemer showing up at HJ’s parents house but totally cute when he drank the wine knowing what would happen. Also i loved HJE in the scene where she discovers her parents, her reaction was priceless but it was especially cute when she was adoring SJ, i would to girl, i would to. SJ though you can feel the itch he has to constantly wanting to hold and touch HJ but having to restrain himself, like in the revolving door war. Smooth move dude lol. It was cute how he wanted a hug, dnt worry bby you will hopefully get more then a hug soon.

also jung eum crying is are always the best, hit me right in the feels

your best friend finally disappointed you when you think you both are special,
it's their 1st problem so I give them a chance,

logically, Hari and Hye jin will never find a problem about love story and trust since they walk in different path and now when they arrive in the crossing, I find they just can't believe it happen,

I think Hari would have felt less guilty and heartbroken if Sung Joon had heard her out and accepted her apology. Now, she is not only heart broken, she's also feeling very ashamed. It's the shame she feels that makes her lie to Hye jin and want to run away. I believe if Hari had resolved things with Sung Joon civilly, if not amicably, she would still be able to hold up her head in front of her friend, but the way Sung Joon brushed her off without fully hearing what she had to say was quite off putting.

To his credit, I really can't blame him because Hari left her confession way too late, after the ship had already left the port, so to speak. He wasn't ready to hear her explanations after piecing it all together. What rankles with me is that in his single minded pursuit in going after the woman he cares about, he often burns, slights, belittles or mistreats others.

First it was Hari he was being nice to, and Hye jin bore the brunt of his ire, now the tables have turned, but I am guessing Hye jin has not forgotten what it feels like to be on the receiving end of his anger. I am sure this, in no small way, is part of her concerns for her friend Hari. The truth is that Hye jin will never feel truly comfortable with Song Joon until Hari is in a happy space, and I don’t see this as noble idiocy, but more of a representation of the deep caring and affection between the two women. Especially when Hye jin knows she's responsible for this whole farce by being dishonest in the beginning.

Before feeling ashamed wouldn't HaRi feel the need to confess why she did what those things to HJ? Her reaction felt completely crazy for me. Where is the sweet girl of ep 10 who needed just one more day to put everything back in order? Where is the huge guilt that caused her stress???

I could believe for a moment that fight between the girls. If she did all that you don't just move past without having a decent talk about it. It doesn't match the level of closeness and honesty they had before. I'm not saying HaRi would come out saying she was so in love with the guy, but she had to at least feel the need to explain how it happened and say she's sorry. It's just very artificial angst.

Okay so I have read a few comments here that seem frustrated about Hye Jin's sudden avoidance of romance with Sung Joon. Though I understand their stand point, I understand Hye Jin's current decision better. Although most would probably prefer them to be together NOW and get on with the fluffy and sweet scenes with our couple, I think it wasn't the right time for them to have that. If they did get together now, I would have probably felt some sort of resentment towards Hye Jin for almost like throwing/ignoring her friendship with Ha Ri. It would have also felt totally opposite to Hye Jin's character. I love that the writers gave the main characters the decency to be honest with their feelings and each other. It's just so refreshing for a kdrama, which more often than not likes using misunderstanding as a plot drive.

And although we know it was Nobody's fault but Ha Ri's that the backlash of her lies are so bad, I don't think she "deserves" what's happening. A friendship like theirs doesn't deserve an ending like that.

I am fine with her reason to not want to date him. And incredibly, he is fine with her reason to not want to date him as well. (Can he BE any more perfect?) My problem lies in Hye Jin unilaterally friendzoning Sung Joon, thus irrevocably destroying any chance of a relationship between them. She was sending him mixed signals. If he were not so head over heels for her and did not have a functioning brain, Sung Joon may have accepted her rejection and moved on with his life because no one should be expected to dwell on a unrequited love.

Some people argue the reason Hye Jin kept him in the dark is because it was not her secret to tell, but Sung Joon already knows Hari is in love with him. Hari confessed to him and forced a kiss onto him; not to mention, he was bloody dating her. Yes, it would have been out of character for Hye Jin to jump into a relationship with Sung Joon, but I cannot not be furious at her for writing off the night before when they had rekindled their friendship as nothing but a class reunion and repeatedly lying to him when he repeatedly asked her for answers.

Since a lot of ppl are saying they don't get this ep, I feel it may be safe now to ask a few Qn's.

1. What propels HJ to change her looks?
2. If one hair treatment and some BB cream are all that it takes, why didn't she do it earlier?
You'd think anybody would want to look her best at a job interview or on her new job, at a fashion mag no less.
3. They make a point of showing her old flats. Now she has this marvellously expensive wardrobe and heels. What changed? Does an intern get paid that much?
4. Her looks changed. Now she hardly screams any more.
I'm puzzled.

1. A renewed motivation and perspective to excel in her career and her life overall after seeing her father's dilapidated workshop and his pride for her despite their circumstances. She got the push she needed to put her life back on track; she seemed to be going through a decade-long lull earlier.

2. That hair treatment cost about $400! Plus, she didn't do it earlier because she became used to not being the pretty girl. She almost believed that she was unattractive, so she didn't seem to bother with her appearance anymore.

3. I don't think her clothes seem that expensive? And I think she was made a permanent employee after she returned. (I'm not sure.) Also, I think there was a scene in episode 8 where the team talk about how dressing fashionably doesn't necessarily cost much or something, you just need to have a good eye for it. So she's just buying budget but fashionable and well-put-together clothes.

4. Her erratic behavior was because she was scared of Seong-joon (finding out her lie); after episodes 5, 6, and 7 they became closer and she isn't afraid anymore (she even wants to tell him who she is before she's interrupted by Shin-hyeok).

She still gets nervous and overreacts like before (see episode 10).

Everything that I have been wondering basically! Although I am thankful for #4. The screams were oh so irritating!

The show has tried to give the reason that she changed because she wanted to be a good daughter to her father and get him a new printing machine. But even though that argument is pretty awesome from a "atleast-she-did-not-change-for-a-guy perspective', it really doesn't stand after that episode.

Moreover, the narrative does not even try to include her past look in the episodes any more. It would have been so funny to see her trying to be very "Most-like" everyday, but she somehow just wakes up and sleeps with make-up on!

Plus, it's not as if she started earning more after getting back the job. she is still an intern. How is she saving up for her father when she seems to have spent quite a lot on clothes and makeup!

I expect more from the writers because it was quite a fun show till the sudden make-over. The "She Was Pretty" title seems useless now.

I love thrifting, and you can totally find nice clothes at a thrift store. I actually haven't noticed much change in her clothes except for the coats and heels.

As for why she changed her looks, well, she did it after she got fired, and then when she came back, she made an effort to do better and be taken more seriously. How we feel we look really does impact our confidence and self-esteem, there's no crime to want to look better (not good, but better).

Her time at Most is only temporary, so it's not like she'll get paid more and be able to buy her dad a typing machine right away, but changing her appearance is the first step to boosting her confidence and work persona in order to remain employed long after Most.

"I actually haven’t noticed much change in her clothes except for the coats and heels."

The wardrobe change is actually very noticeable. She has gone from dressing like a broke college student to dressing like a fashionista. Even her coats are hi-end and of the latest fashion, not what you'd find at a thrift store.

But that's just me not getting the big deal they made out of her supposed bad looks, and then dropping that motif altogether overnight, making it so jarring.

One thing I've noticed is that most all K-Drama heroines have unlimited budgets when it comes to buying clothes. Seriously, even penniless girls who live in an apartment the size of a closet must have an underground bat cave to hold their wardrobe.
(I'm being sarcastic, but I have seen this. I'll try to come up with some examples if somebody wants to argue, though.)

Went to Korea for vacation this May. It is the place to shop! I'm known to shop until you drop, but I don't have the $$ to buy expensive brand names although I have a few.
I used to think Hong Kong was good shopping, but no comparison.
Korea has fabulous fakes, and the shoes and clothing doesn't cost much there. The styles are very trendy. I went and did a lot of sightseeing since it was my first time. I didn't have much time to shop, but would definitely go back and make extra time to shop.

I think how hyejin gave up on sungjoon because of hari isnt selfless at all. If anything, it is a selfish gesture.
What would hari feels if she knows that HJ rejected SJ becoz of her? Triple guilty. First for pretending tobe HJ; second for HJ feeling broken heart right now; and last for SJ who also broken heart.

It is actually normal for HJ tobe that selfish bcoz i too gonna feel really bad if i happen to get something my sister dying to have, but then i cant share it with her. No matter how i also wanted it too. The happiness cannot repay the guilty feeling i feel.

it's selfish that Hye-Jin expects Ha-Ri to open her wounds to her instantly (probably thinking that by doing so, she can immediately heal). it's one-sided and works only for HJ's convenience (like "I need to know what you're thinking, so I can tell when I can show you my happiness and how much")

I'm a fan of silence and absence, and I think these would do good for them right now, especially for Ha-Ri's case 'cause you know, regardless of whose fault it was, when you are rejected and left with embarrassment by a person you thought could show you true love, I don't think any amount of sincerity can pass through you at the moment, or any comforting words from a long-time friend can lessen that pain.

This! I'm so agree with you.
I was soo sad that she left Hyejin, but I do hope if she's gone, it's for the best. Time can be a good healer.
For some people the way Hari and Shinhyuk handle their problem might look like a childish and coward move, but I can't blame both of them. Hari can heal her heart by disappearing and then come back at Hyejin for sure (cheering at her and Sungjoon sincerely with no burden anymore; oh and her character will grow to the better side). The same goes for Shinhyuk, if he also wants to leave, he can do it and still in the end would come back to Hyejin (cheering at her with his effortless trademark humor and gag).
But still, it's really good that Hyejin takes time to care about Hari. :)

Running away to heal your heart was the same thing Ha Ri's mother did and she paid the price of estrangement from her daughter. When you are hurting, isn't it better to accept support from or be there for your loved ones? Hopefully Ha Ri will consider this.

It may appear as the same thing, Kbas, but her mother left Ha-Ri for herself, while Ha-Ri left Hye-Jin for their friendship's sake.

when HR said that her silence is all she can do and when she tries to appear okay in front of her, I'm sure she is trying to preserve the way things are and avoid further damaging their friendship.

and while I agree that heartbreak is less painful when you accept support from others, it actually depends on who that person is. In HR's case, don't you think showing HJ her wounds wouldn't make HJ feel more burdened and less happy with SJ?

that's why, contrary to what most think, I think Shin-Hyuk and Ha-Ri's response are, for me, the most selfless and most mature way of dealing with their situation. They aren't trying to force their feelings to the ones they love. In fact, their disappearance shows that they respect both lovers, letting themselves deal with their emotions alone.

0

I didn't think of it as childish and coward as well. :) I mean, do we really expect Ha-Ri and Shin-Hyuk to stay and immediately have a change of heart? they say acceptance is easier when you can already distance yourself from the pain, and I hope that time will help them wear it off little by little.

I'm with you! I enjoy angst (when done well). And angst was basically built into the plot of this drama, so it's totally expected.

I think the ending of this episode left some people unsatisfied because the way it was written makes it so obvious that episode 12 was supposed to air right after it. It doesn't feel complete or has the cliffhanger that keeps you coming back for next week's eps at all. It's just because of the screwed-up schedule.

Because of the liveshooting system, the writer will be able to incorporate and adjust the story accordingly and we'll be back on track from next week onwards. Looking forward to it!

Well, RaRa could be Ten too..

I think SH is Ten too! RaRa seems like a red-herring really. On soompi, some people seem to think the Chaebol could be the older curly-haired guy with the back-scratcher -- I think his name Poong-ho -- which would be a nice twist!

I know it's a minority opinion, but I totally wouldn't mind Shin-hyeok and Ha-ri getting together! They have good chemistry, IMO. Their personalities go together quite well. He's more serious and sensitive around her, and they have an equal-footing to their interactions (that SH doesn't have with HJ and HR doesn't have with SJ). He also finds pretty, but doesn't treat her like an object like the other guys she's around (barring SJ of course) and calls her out on her BS/actions firmly.

I'm not sure they'll get together, though.

I think my comment disappeared there, lol.

But I agree about SH being Ten! RaRa's a red-herring, IMO. On soompi, some people have put forward the theory of the secret Chaebol being the older curly-haired guy with the back-scratcher practically glued to him, I think his name is Poong-ho, which would be a refreshing twist. It's not Seong-joon, no, because of the stern dressing-downs he's been given by supposed higher-ups.

I know it's a minority opinion, but I totally wouldn't mind Shin-hyeok and Ha-ri getting together! They have good chemistry. Their personalities go together. He acts more serious and sensitive around her than any other person on the show; he doesn't seem to put on much of the Clown act in front of her (probably because she already knows he's richie-rich secretly and he knows she's torn up about being decoy Hye-jin).

He also finds her pretty, but doesn't treat her like an object like other men in her life (barring SJ of course); swiftly calls her out on her BS/actions firmly, gets where she's coming from and cheers her up. They also have an equal-footing to their interactions that SH lacks with HJ and HR with SJ (even if you put aside the fact they're the only ones who knew the whole truth for much of the drama).

So yeah, that became like a Ship Manifesto for Shin-hyeok and Ha-ri, oops. I'm not sure they're going to get together, though.

Hey i agree with all that you said! Wow, yes, Ra Ra may really be a red-herring!!! And SH be the real Ten! Now we just need to see him with the black fountain pen in all the Ten posts....

However, if Ra Ra is not Ten, then what is the real her??? Her real self can't be this 'abnormal' right?

Oh yes, the secret Chaebol may indeed be Poong-ho! Always expect the unexpected in kdramas that play around with secrets. I can't forget how surprised i was when the second lead's mother was actually that evil in 'Pinnochio'!

Yes, I find HR and SH to be a much better match, and my reasons are similar to yours! Although Siwon's acting is really good here and SH is a funny character to watch at, i feel a tinge of uncomfortable when i watch his scenes with HJ, and felt much more comfortable when he was with HR. Likewise, I feel uncomfortable when i watched HR with SJ. To me, the base of all relationships is trust - that is why i find HR and HJ's friendship the most endearing and they made the best scenes to me, above all lovelines. Even till this episode, HJ decided to trust HR to step up and correct her own mistakes although HR let her down. Some may say that HJ is ignorant here, but i think it matches her personality of 'trusting everybody easily' well.

Ah, great to find someone else who likes the idea of SH-HR! :-)

And I agree, I sometimes felt that tinge of discomfort too during a few of Shin-hyeok and Hye-jin's scenes (when it got serious, otherwise I was usually in tears of laughter). Shin-hyeok and Ha-ri just feel more like a match, I don't know how to put it -- Hye-jin and Shin-hyeok just really feel like oppa-dongsaeng/noona-dongsaeng to me, he's always teasing her and she's playfully annoyed. Seong-joon and Ha-ri's scenes were done really well because of how uncomfortable and wrong it felt, really!

I think maybe Ra-ra just is abnormal. :-D There are some OTT people in fashion/art, but you never know, maybe she has a serious side/secret identity too. Looking forward to next week more! :-)

OMG! sighing in relief that I'm not the only one that feels this way as well. I was wondering why people weren't picking up on the interaction between SH and HR. He does seem a lot calmer and more at ease when talking to her. (perhaps because she knows he's rich?). HJ doesn't even know that SH and HR know each other. And I've also mentioned in some of my posts about the brother-sister relationship ( oppa-dongsaeng/noona-dongsaeng ) between SH and HJ.

Thanks for bringing that out!

i couldnt agree with you more, they have something together that seems to be missing when SH and HR are with HJ and SJ respectively. compared to when SJ and HJ are together, everything seems to fall into place and their so in sync with one another.

I don't think it's full-on noble idiocy yet on Hye-jin's part--it's more like someone having conflicting feelings to me, and so she tried to put distance between them. But yes, that was an early stage. I am glad Sung-joon confronted him about it immediately, instead of prolonging it. Sometimes, rationality comes handy in relationships.

Anyway, I was also having a hard time dealing with Shin-hyuk's "Don't go." I know I have always rooted from Sung-joon, but in that moment, I kinda didn't want Hye-jin to go...

BUT, I really loved that moment from Sung-joon's call up to that slow-motion as he grabs her in the middle of the street that I am glad she left to find her first love. It's super heart-stopping, and the camera-works and the shots were so damn good. It makes for more anticipation. And oh! THE LOOKS. Dammit. I love that Hye-jin can only cry and laugh and smile as Sung-joon talks. The build-up to this revelation definitely paid off. I am so happy for them.

Back to that conversation outside Hye-jin's house: ugh I love love love that conversation. Ji Sung-joon has the best confession in dramaland. "The one I like... is you. Back then, it was you, and even when I didn't know who you were, it was you" I DIED OKAY. (And also that "I can't do it, Hyejin-ah." back in the office). I really love how confrontational he is, but in a very respectful way. He talks it out with Hye-jin and takes to heart whatever it is that's bothering the girl he loves. I just wish that this thing with Ha-ri do not go on too long at the expense of the OTP's relationship. I wouldn't like that.

I was hating on Ha-ri a lot before, and I still can't forgive her for what she's done. I actually don't subscribe to her choice of just leaving and trying to dodge everything. But no matter the bad turn because of Ha-ri's choice, I still want them to fix their friendship. I love that Hye-jin was angry with Ha-ri not because of a guy, but because she just wanted her to explain whatever the reason is behind her decisions. That is so refreshing, and it's quite a nice take on friendship--it wooed away from that cat-fight or pitting-woman-against-each-other.

I really loved this episode, and I find myself re-imagining all my favorite scenes ever since I watched this last night. I am still reeling from the awesomeness of that street-chase to the looks; that conversation; and that coffee-drinking. Ah, 5 more episodes left. May this drama do well in the end.

And oh, I'll be waiting for the kisses ;)

Yes, this wasn't noble idiocy. She wasn't going to let Ha-ri "have" him or whatever. She just knew Ha-ri's feelings, and out of respect for them, she wanted to not be with Sung-joon before those feelings were resolved. (But thank goodness for Sung-joon's bluntness, that is a character in and of itself!).

You're so on point about the girls' fight not being a catfight over a guy. One, the guy always liked Hye-jin, so no need for a fight, and two, their issues are so deep and complicated. Their fight is about what they mean to each other.

+100000 I agree to everything your saying. I didn't classify what Hye Jin did as Noble Idiocy. It was noble but was it completely ridiculous and nonsensical? No. She loves her friend and she has always put others before herself (yes to her detriment) but its more a reason for anyone to fall for her even more. The fact that HR couldn't accept forgiveness shows that she really just couldn't forgive herself.

Oh, Ha Ri, while you did this to yourself, the way Seung-Joon just moved past her without even hearing her out though, wow. That was harsh, but it was also EXACTLY what we all knew would happen, including Ha Ri. Seung Joon really didn’t care for Ha Ri beyond the act, and while it may seem harsh, that’s just who he is. He doesn’t care about people easily, and Ha Ri’s been lying to him and using him for like a month.

And thennn Shin Hyuk gah. I felt really bad for him desperately asking Hye-Jin not to go, but honey, you really couldn’t have expected anything else. Hye Jin saying ‘sorry’ and going was so, so characteristic.

HYE-JIN AND SEUNG-JOON’S REUNION THOUGH, My heart. It’s everything I ever wanted. Everything. The whole thing was written and acted out beautifully. So, so beautifully. There’s literally nothing more I could ask for. AND THE ONIOOOON.

And thennn everything went to hell.

The sound I made when Hye Jin avoided Seung Joon’s hand was so animalistic I swear, I was just shriking: NONONONO. Oh my days. Hye Jin. No. I get that Ha Ri likes him, SO WHAT?! HONESTLY, HYE JIN.

Like while this is unfair to yourself, IT’S ALSO REALLY UNFAIR TO SEUNG JOON, OKAY? JUST. GET OVER IT. FOR GOODNESS SAKE.

Poor Seung Joon, honestly, how he was desperately asking if he’s just a classmate hurt me in my heart sooooo much. Like no, okay, no, THIS POOR GUY HAS BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH. He’s been lied to and manipulated and his heart has been taken on a bloody roller coaster ride, he does NOT deserve this.

Which is why I was so relieved when Seung Joon finally saw everything logically and was all ‘I’m sure of your heart, so don’t let me misunderstand’. I was really afraid Hye Jin wasn’t going to tell him the reason, but she did and I was so relieved.

LOL, though the look of sheer done-ness on Seung-Joon’s face when she said that was amazingly satisfying to see though. I’m so annoyed with Hye Jin. Seung Joon has so much patience. Honestly. Why. His sweet request that she not run away ;-;

The ending kind of left me stunned though. Tbh I’m disappointed in Shin Hyuk. What, the girl you liked didn’t accept you even when you logically knew she wouldn’t so now you’re going to quit your job, even when you know that the magazine is more likely to get cancelled without you? I’m disappointed, puppy. I expected you to be a bigger person than that.

And then Ha Ri. The most frustrating thing about all of this is that I wanted to start liking Ha Ri again. Okay. I truly, really did. BUT WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS THAT STUNT HA RI?! You can’t just DO that to any friend, let alone your best friend who may I remind you YOU’VE STABBED IN THE BACK FOR THE PAST Month and FORGAVE YOU ANYWAY.

I had sympathy for her in the beginning of the ep, but then that temper tantrum with her refusing to talk to Hye Jin just pissed me off. These two may talk about being best friends, but the only one I see who’s always putting the other first, always sacrificing...

I’m just pissed in general at Ha Ri and Shin Hyuk both. Oh, your one-sided love didn’t work out so you’re just gonna get up and abandon your friends in some misguided tragic temper tantrum? You know what, you two self-centred kids deserve each other.

I’m honestly disgusted and disappointed. I thought that for all their flaws, they were good kids who’d be loyal to their friends at the end of the day. But their attitude right now shows that when they don’t like the situation they’re in, they don’t have enough loyalty to stick it out for their friends, even if those friends would do so for them. And if there’s one thing I personally can’t stand, it’s a lack of loyalty.

I wish I can articulate my thinking like you especially regarding HR & SH. They making everything about them irked me tbh. Especially HR running away without a word like that.
On SH, HJ plainly & openly said she likes SJ, so it is obvious you had no chance. Ditching work because you got rejected is so unprofessional.
Right now, both HR & SH displaying middle school level pettyness.

Well you shouldn't be disappointed at the characters but at the writer!

They both acted completely OUT of character just to build artificial conflict.

Even if HaRi lied a lot she always sweet and felt a lot of guilt about it, even in 10 when she found out HJ knew she was very grateful. That tantrum scene would NEVER happen.

The tantrum of SHK is even worse, he was by far the more stable and rational character in this show. He knew she was in love with SJ and she needed to tell him the truth. After all that he tells her not to go??? And quits his job? Never.

actually i wouldnt blame the writers, i felt like they acted in with their character but exhibiting more the negative flwas of their nature, idk i always saw that underlying trait in them, the thing is they made SH too perfect but it fits with his silly, goofy nature as well as the line he said about love to HR sometime back in the ep. i mean its actually nice to see SH not being perfect. i feel like he was always like that though, when Hj had her makeover we saw glimpses of it, when he was complaining it wasnt fun anymore. and lets face it SH cant be perfect in every situation his put in either, it just gets boring and tedious well personally for me at least.

I think we saw glimpses of SH's other side when he left SJ apartment after they had their "words". To be honest, I was taken aback at how cold his eyes got. I was like "WOA! who is this person!" A little scary.

I love how you said that Sung-joon was very logical in his thinking (also, yay for logic in dramaland!) because he has always been this way. Nothing is ever complicated with him. His compartmentalization of things always seemed to hurt his relationships with others, but this ability to see things for what they are came in handy at the right time.

With Shin-hyuk, I don't think he's leaving. But I do agree that he should've known what Hye-jin's answer to his confession was going to be and should've prepared himself better for it. Running away doesn't solve anything, but he should've considered that Hye-jin's time with Most was only going to be three months, so she'd be gone soon anyway.

Girl, this comment resonates with me on a bazillion levels. I'm glad Seong Joon was smart enough to see through Hye Jin's selfless stupidity. It's like, kdrama rules were dictating that Hye Jin be that way but he was like, that one male lead who wouldn't let her. I really love how the writer put everything together. The angst was her understandably and left in the same episode. Thumbs up to you, writer-nim

Great recap! Thanks, LollyPip, like always!

You know, this is a show where I don't hate or dislike any character at all. I understand why they do the things they do without getting mad at them because they're each flawed to a certain point and that's what makes them interesting. I want all of them to have a happy ending.

LollyPip, I agree so much at how beautiful their expressions were when they saw each other in the street. Hwang Jung-eum was so good in that scene. I think about the times she was ready to confess to him, and I remember thinking how mad he'd get, and how anxious I was. But when she started tearing up, all I saw was relief that he finally knew. That told me she was always confident that he would react that way, happy to finally meet his old friend rather than angry at her for lying. And that is why they belong together. They understand each other, they are just happy to be with each other. Sung-joon was so on in this episode. He's always been honest, but this time it's the good kind. No silliness, no drama, no time for misunderstandings--please, we need more guys like this dramaland!

I do like that the girls' friendship was front and center in this episode. The show started out with them, so it should make sense that that's where the angst is. I think we were all expecting the angst to be from Sung-joon's discovery, which is why I absolutely loved that he was so accepting of Hye-jin and forgave her right away. He pretty much blamed himself for being oblivious, just like Hye-jin blamed herself for Ha-ri's situation. It's no wonder they're together! Again, I can't praise the writer enough for doing things that are different from other shows. I like being surprised.

For example, we've had an airport scene, a back hug scene, dishonesty, literal lovesickness, and true love--ALL between best friends and not between the OTP. My love for this show is just ever-growing, and I can't stop saying how much I love it.

I totally get Ha-ri leaving. She is escaping her guilt, but I think she's found the time to be with her mom and she is too ashamed to live with Hye-jin. It's that thing where when you want someone to be angry with you, and they're understanding instead, it's that much worse. It means that your lie, which you built up in your head to be the worst thing you could ever do to your loved one, wasn't actually a big deal at all.

I don't think she really left but if she did I don't buy it. She was sorry for the lie and all, she would never react like she did in 11, fighting like that. Even if they did fight she would never just leave before making things right the person she loved the most.

I don't think it was right for to leave like that either. She just caused her best friend even more pain. Looking in from outside it looks selfish but I think her behaviour is human. We like to run away when we've done wrong. It really takes courage to fess up and be honest. Being honest is hard when you know the consequences. We've all been there.

She would never leave, it's human of course but it's not like her character behaves, one of the biggest bonds between them was that one was always there for the other. She would never just leave the country without talking to HJ first. Besides there was nothing more to confess, HJ already knows everything.

Yeah chingu, seems SJ was really just so relieved at having found HJ. He'd been beating up himself for weeks about having feeling for this other Hye Jin. I liked his attitude. I remember watching Mask and seeing Min Woo almost self destruct because his wife wasn't who he'd thought. And it was really disappointing to see this guy react so badly when the signs were there and he'd always been so understanding. That being said, I'm really liking SJ right now.

I would hate this show if hye jin walks the noble idiocy path.

Shin Hyuk aside, I actually understand the actions of the other three main characters on an emotional level.

Of course, Seong Joon is the perfect guy now. He knows what he wants, and he wouldn't accept for anything less.

Hye Jin and her noble idiocy might be a cliche now. But I can totally understand her actions. She loves Seong Joon, she wants to be with him but not at the expense of her own bestfriend. She doesn't accept Seong Joon, noy because she wants Seong Joon to end up with Ha Ri, but she will be hurting Ha Ri by being with Seong Joon.

While Ha Ri leaving is also something I can understand. She's feeling guilty, the guilt increases when Hye Jin did not get angry at her the way she actually deserved. So she could only think of taking her out of the equation. I would also want to just disappear if I hurt someone I treasure so much. It might not actually solve the problems, but we humans usually always opt for escape when faced with a crisis.

Shin Hyuk is the character I have very little understanding towards. Yes, he's funny and he's caring but I agree with Seong Joon that he's also a coward. He didn't actually think that Hye Jin would choose her when all he did was making jokes? He's heartbroken but I don't think he actually have the right to be that heartbroken. He knows it will eventually turn out this way, and his actions are like he wants Hye Jin to feel guilty for making him heartbroken.

Ahh... recap for the roller coster ep is here~
Probably becuase this is ep 11, which if we follow standard kdrama rules, is when conflicts are introduced, the start to angsty ride & lots of stupid misunderstandings & cliches

First off, I really like how HJ react when she received SJ's call. Her facial expression change the mement she realised SJ know the truth. I really applaud her in that scene. And their scene together afterwards is so cute & I totally swoon.
I think only SJ making progress in this ep. He takes no time telling exactly how he feels, calm & understanding when HJ wants to take things slow, resolve misunderstanding quickly.
Another one that makes me happy is when SJ asking HJ to explain her behavior calmly. In most kdrama, it always ended up in shouting match & more understanding. And I glad he tell her exactly how he feels and put an end to that noble idiocy act. That scene at HJ parent house is swoon worthy~~
Although I understand HJ pov, I wish she just tell him rather than acting all strange (again) around him. Just becuase you know HR like SJ, pushing him away to HR doesnt make them fall in love suddenly. Dont treat him like a ball you 2 friends pass around.
And I'm glad that HJ & HR had that fight because things wont get resolve if all are acting fine & dandy tbh. Altho I kinda mad at HR for leaving just like that. I know she probably feels guilty & need time to get over her feelings towards SJ but leaving without saying anything only making HJ feeling guiltier. Since they has been friends since young, shouldnt she understand HJ at least by that much?
Another one that irked me is SH. They started SH being so level headed but then he skip work for days because HJ rejected him? Sure he probably wants to distance himself from HJ but acting like that hurt the most more than HJ tho. And she plainly tell him that she like SJ, so you already know her feeling and has no chance dude.
But, I think it is so unnecessary for HJ tried to give SH money. Dude already feeling down got rejected, no need to pour salt & vinegar on his fresh wound.

Hopefully we will get good ep 12 and few things get resolve. Since SWP always fast pace, hopefully they continue with that. But our otp found each other so early like this do makes me nervous tbh. Pls dont introduce new character (like HR's mom. why?) & unnecessary side story.

Good reminder of the ep placement in total episode arc. The writers can't wrap things up too neatly yet, we still have 5 eps to go (or is it 9? is this a 20 ep drama? I will have to check to steel myself). I am also worried about what contrived misunderstandings they will put our characters through next. After HR leaves her, does HJ go into a deep dark depression, not eat, and get the dreaded life-draining drama disease? Doesn't seem likely, but this show hasn't been exactly trope-free.
I love this show but had to rage pause while viewing when HJ lied to SJ again. As evidenced by the end of the ep, there was absolutely no need for it. I'm so happy that they resolved this in this ep and didn't drag it on.

This episode was strange. I know SWP is not a logic show but this pushed things even more.

I love that HJ puts so much value on her friendship with Hari, it's about time kdramas talk more about this and it's very nicely done in this show but I still think she accepted too easily and later had no real reason not to tell SungJoon straight away why she was acting distant. I mean, you hide for all that time and when you finally start talking you begin lying again the very next day? Not the best idea.

What happened with SHK??? If everybody who had a crush on someone at the office quit, the business world would be in constant chaos.

Hari would be too guilty to have that fight with her too, it doesn't match how she felt the earlier episode, sloppy writing.

0

Required fields are marked *

I disagree that the writing is sloppy. Ha Ri knew she'd done wrong and was fully expecting Hye Jin to go off on her and be upset. On the contrary, Hye Jin rushed home to see HER when she'd just reunited with her first love. She was genuinely worried for her friend and its how she is.

Remember how in ep 10 SJ rushed to her but she could only worry about him? HJ is selfless to a fault and HR knows that. Hence they ended up fighting. Ha Ri thinks she deserves every bit of backlash, especially following Seong Joon's reaction. But the one person who should be the most upset is HJ, who said that she blames HERSELF for involving Ha Ri in her lie.

All three of the leads have a lot to work out but I think it's the episodes placement in the week that upsets the balance. Originally, the week wouldn't have ended like this. It's interesting that the angst is coming from somewhere we didn't expect.

I do understand why Hye Jin di what she did, except when she was crazy and distant with SJ instead of explaining right away.

It's the Hari atittude that doesn't make sense. She was feeling guilty and sorry, she wouldn't have pretended like it was no bid deal. She didn't explain anything to HJ and when HJ finally got mad at her she says she's leaving? She is leaving because HJ is too nice and likes her too much? She is leaving because HJ is not mad or angry enough at her? Where is the girl who was being shown as a supportive honest sister for the last 10 episodes? It is unrealistic.

Sorry but i really hate Hye Jin. I want to slap her. I'm so sad for Shin Hyuk. How can you not love a guy who does eveything for you, who never hesitate when you ask him for help, who doesn't yell and humilate you in front of other people. And most especially who love her despite her "flaws" (her old hair, freckles and the way she dress). No, let me rephrase that, who love her "flaws". Running after Sung Joon when she got the call and leaving Shin Hyuk without a thought is just so so bad and I find it insulting when she gave her the money for hospital bill. It's like slapping him in the face. I think the way she act in this episode, she doesn't 100% value her friendship with Shin Hyuk. She just remember him when she has problem. I think she and Sung Joon is just so absobed to the fact that they are childhood friends and their so called first love. I honestly don't like what is happening. Shin Hyuk deserve so much better. He deserve to be happy. I think he's a male lead material. No. He is better than the male lead.

Sorry just my opinion..

The Shin Hyuk SLS is really strong right now. But not for me thankfully. Every time people put up a case for Shin Hyuk its as if HJ's feelings don't matter.

SH was so jokey jokey for the majority of the drama that I don't know how he expected the heroine to take him seriously. He was always pranking her and making fun of her. In any case, this is why you stay away from SLS in the first place because half the time the only perspective you care about is his own. And that always equals suffering. He is written to seem perfect. To me he was always more of a friend and comic relief than a love interest.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you about HJ's reaction.
SLS aside, I was disappointed by her reaction after SH confession. She said before that she was really lucky to have a friend like him, always there to help her and listen to her. Even if she's not in love with him, the least she could do for him, as a friend, was to give him two minutes of her time before running after SJ. I know that she has waited for SJ to realise that she was his first love for a long time, but she has waited for weeks, the guy can wait a few minutes !!
And later, giving him money for the hospital bill before even saying anything to him, she is really lacking sensitivity.
Many seem to think that SH is overreacting, I don't think so. Of course he already knew that he didn't have much chance with HJ (that's why he hid his feelings) but the way he was rejected was really cruel.

i have to disagree, with you, she already told him how she felt, and SH just didnt want her to go to SJ, he already told her he wanted to be more then friends.

I would also have to disagree with you. I agree with Bila in that she already told him how she felt. And he knew even before she actually told him. Remember the piggyback ride? SH asked her if she wanted him to know who she was to reconnect with an old friend or was it something more. She hesitated on her answer which told him that she really wanted something more. ( this was based on the analogy that Editor Kim RaRa had just given them recently regarding the heart and mind)

So the same would hold true to when SH asked her not to go. If she had stayed, even if it was for a few minutes, he would have taken that as a hesitation, and that he had a chance with her. Giving him hope.

She just said she was sorry and RAN to meet SJ. That just showed him where her heart truly was.

I just felt I had to reply to this comment.

"One thing that bugs me also is SJ’s mental state. He seems to be anorexic (the fridge filled with only water / never seems to eat / drinks coffee and avoid collective outings…)"

He isn't anorexic (you have to be really underweight to be diagnosed I think: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/anorexia-nervosa/Pages/Diagnosis.aspx). He doesn't seem to have any issues with eating food or restrictive eating (unless you count not liking peas disordered, ha), for example, he ate to his fill with Hye-jin during their business trip together, so he doesn't have an eating disorder either.

His forgetting to eat food and drinking mostly coffee, lack of meals in the fridge was probably to show his loneliness, his disconnect with people and his focus on his work. Also a way for Hye-jin to worry for him when she came close to hating him, and a way for him to warm up to her when she bought him food.

His avoiding collective meetings/outings is because he's shown as very reserved and a "closed book" as they say; he isn't outgoing or a people person like Shin-hyeok, he doesn't warm up to others quickly.

"Do I really want to see the heroine with s/o who has not finished dealing with his past/traumas ? Clue his phone call with his therapist."

Ouch. You are of course entitled to your opinion, but counting Seong-joon's trauma as a reason for the OTP not to be together comes across as more than a bit harsh. Many wounds take a lifetime to heal and some never do. There are many people who madly love their spouses and couldn't imagine their life without them despite their mental issues/past traumas.

In KDramas (and pretty much in TV shows/movies all over the world) too, there are many, many male leads who have past traumas and mental issues who are still loved by the heroine. "Secret Garden" comes to mind, where the male lead suffers from debilitating claustrophobia due to a past trauma; "Master's Sun" too, where the lead has dyslexia due to his traumatic kidnapping.

Seong-joon's episodes happen in very specific conditions, similar to the one when he lost his Mom, and he seems to overcome them during times of emergency (like when he thought Hye-jin was in an accident). Hardly unmanageable.

Also, Hye-jin comforting Seong-joon when he had a breakdown is how they became friends in the first place. She obviously doesn't mind his issues at all; she literally says that she'll be his "Umbrella". That beginning of their friendship is what the entire drama is based upon.

The call with his therapist was more for exposition of his growing discomfort with Ha-ri/"Hye-jin" being so utterly different from his Hye-jin.

Wow +1. So SJ isn't sick like we thought. And your right about the harshness of the comment. It's obvious that SJ needs someone's comfort with all he's going through and HJ is perfect for him seeing as she understands him. Everyone has issues, some more serious than others but they shouldn't stop you from being with someone. Would @Indira had said the same about Cha Do Hyun from KMHM or Si Won from Good Docter, or Jo In Sung's character from It's Okay, That's Love? Don't think so.

Love your comments. Insightful and empathetic to the characters.
The significance of food and meals shared with people is an important motif in Korean culture and reflected in dramas.
"Did you eat" seems to be the most common greeting between loved ones. That concern for someones well being is an expression of love.
I agree with your take on Seong Joon food issues. He fondly remembers the meals with Hye Jin's family. Sharing food is sharing family.
I recall the scene from City Hunter when Jin Pyo's mother is talking about the pain of missing her stolen child. She hasn't been able to feed him or cook for him, the essence of a mother's love.

totally agree with you, and ouch indeed on that traumas comment. in reality partners stay with their partners through thick cause they are able to handle it, like some people stay and support their partners with depression or other mental illnesses whereas others dont because they cant handle it which is fair enough. of course HJ can handle it and she is willing to always be there for SJ no matter what.

And can I say I'll double that ~swoooon~, maybe triple? Sung Joon's totally gOT me now. Your assessment of Sung Joon's honesty was right-on-point, and that whole paragraph made my stomach flutter a little as I was reading it especially how Sung Joon was "gently insistent " on Hye Jin telling him the truth.

""The one I like, is you.” When they were kids, it was her, and when he didn’t know who she was, it was her. Now, and in the future, it’s her. Well, ~swoon~." YES, Swooning big time. :)

As I reflected on Hye Jin's total jitteryness around Seong Joon in Ep 10 and then her backpeddling in ep 11, I get the distinct feeling that Hye Jin is comfortable in the role of caretaker and friend - but not comfortable with romance because that requires receiving.

It freaked her out to be the focus of Seong Joon's hug (clearly a protective and comforting connection) and then his stares (eye contact is a soul to soul connection), and then his determination to state the truth of where they are in their relationship ("it was you then, it's now you, and it will always be you"), she's in new position to be the receiver, rather than the giver. That's kinda scary if you're not good at receiving love.

Ha Ri, yes, there is devoted friendship there - but I think Hye Jin isn't that noble, she's just scared. I would be. Seong Joon is intense and bossy and has a panther stare which is disconcerting. I can't get that "you're fired" scene out of my head. It could mean he's gonna be not so great when he's in denial or avoiding something, or splitting hairs with his intuitive critical logic. When he's good he's very very good, but when he's bad, he's horrid.

Maybe she's scared to be with him, and Ha Ri's abandonment leaves her very vulnerable with no one to "care" for emotionally facing the reality of Seong Joon by herself. Shin Hyuk is the safety net - he's safe. Shin Hyuk, pony up and pursue her!

I don't know. Personally, I kinda felt let down by this episode with all the Ha Ri stuff. Get in there and find out who Hye Jin really is. Make Seong Joon slowly woo her - and rebuild the trust that he damaged in the first episodes. Love is one thing, but trust is a whole other animal.

I like your theory. Besides being a nice and hard working girl we don't know much about HyeJin, this would make her more interesting. It's not going to happen though, it's too subtle and complex for this drama. She acts completely rational one day than after finding out Hari liked him she goes crazy than she's back to being rational again. Nobody never even found the reason behind the makeover, it's just theories, though many of them are good, show never bothered to fully explain.

This episode was still a great one. I did get frustrated with Hye Jin when she tried to push SJ away. My hurt just about stopped when she basically flicked his hand away at the crosswalk. But then I got where she was coming from. And the intensity and honesty from Seong Joon was just so swoonworthy! Why can't all leads be that persistent and understanding. PSJ does intensity so well...Sorry seems I broke off into fangirl land for a moment hehe.

Anyways, while it was frustrating seeing HJ push SJ away, I loved how perceptive he was. He was so understanding. Kudos to the writer for creating characters who can call each other out on their foolishness. So I must say all in all I liked the angst. I don't know if we would have been this upset if ep 12 had come out the next day. I mean, the Thursday ep IS the real one to look out for.

I liked that HJ loved her best friend so unconditionally although she dealt with the problems incorrectly. And the the writer has SJ prove why he's a great match for her by sticking to her side.

So I understand the frustrations some of us expressed but I'm also trying to look on things from the character's p.o.v. I don't think HJ acted without valid reason so I don't count her actions as noble idiocy (even if it was brief). And I count it as good writing when another character points these things out, which shows that the writer knows EXACTLY what she is doing. I only pray that the anst in ep 11 doesn't spill over into next week.

Were we not in drama land and I could meet Shin Hyuk (who needs a short break to nurse a broken heart, my poor baby!) I would tell him this: "From my perspective you are not a second lead but a co-lead. Without you, I doubt if we would invest as much time on the drama as we do now."

I am so over the sis-omance that is totally disfunctional, where hJ plays the saint while her messed up friend sucks up the emotional energy. How selfish can you be to disappear at the moment you need to clear things up with your best friend. (she might not be gone but still...)
I was completely turned off of HR trying to fix the ugly shoes while she buys beautiful feminine shoes for herself. If she cared for her "wife" she should have made sure she went to work at fashion magazine looking presentable. No excuses accepted.
I know is just a drama but I was really pissed. By the way I love this drama and I loved the passion and words of SJ. He redeemed himself big time.

Okay, here's an IF question:

IF Hari had never found out that Hye Jin knows about her still seeing Sung Joon under her identity....

AND, just to take it back a little further,

IF Hari had never found out that Hye Jin was planning on telling Sung Joon the truth,

Would she have continued to charade around as Hye Jin, despite her physical manifestations of her guilt, and continue to see him during his entire 3 months in Korea?????

Love it, your IFs just makes me... If your IFs applied, we'd have another drama with different plot instead of this one. The title could be He Was Ugly. lol

I could totally see her continuing the charade even though she started to avoid him as her built got worse.

Yes, I can see that too. She had already said "just one more month". She was planning on carrying it out to the end. I believe the only reason she "tried" to make an "effort" was because she didn't want SJ to find out from HJ. And also when HJ found out about her seeing him.

I only cry because of Ha Ri and Hye Jin. They break my heart.

But I do cringe about the guys.
