Name That Drama: A sweet caretaker, a tragic blind girl

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Daddy Warbucks

Several years ago I watched a short part of a drama that may have come out between 2003 to 2006. What I recall is a wealthy male lead meets a young orphaned boy (age 7 or 8?) in the street. I think the orphan tried to steal food or something. Male lead brings boy back to his very nice apartment. Lead male cleans boy up (I recall the bath tub was a big oval one and there was lots of bubbles). The lead guy buys the orphan new clothes, etc., and wants to raise him.

Lead guy’s mom shows up trying to get him to come home, but he refuses. And mom thinks he is nuts to want to raise the orphan. Lead male has to go out for a bit and leave his mom to babysit the boy. For some reason I think the male lead may be ill (dying?).

For years I thought it was Lee Dong-gun in the lead, but couldn’t find any drama he was in with this storyline. This has driven me nuts for years trying to figure this out. Thanks!!!

  2. Ah, the classic eyeball sacrifice

My family used to watch dramas together and I’m desperately looking for this one because it is stuck in my head for such a long time now. It definitely ended tragically. What I remember:

    • The main girl got blind (I don’t remember if it was because of an accident or because she was sick)
    • The second male lead got into a car crash. I think he committed suicide so that he could give her his eyes.
    • The main girl still dies because something was wrong with the second lead’s eyes.
    • The main girl and guy got married while she was blind.
    • She always called him brother but they weren’t related, so they were close to each other in their childhood.
    • The main guy came back from somewhere after being gone for a long time.
    • There was also a mean second girl.

I’ll be thankful for every little help I can get. 🙂

  3. Secret plastic surgery

Hey! So this one is not exactly a drama, it is a movie. I watched it a few years ago at a film festival.

The story is about this woman who is not confident in herself and thinks that her boyfriend will leave her for someone who is prettier. So she gets cosmetic surgery and changes her complete face, changes her name and starts stalking her boyfriend.

I remember this scene where they are in an outdoor art exhibit by the sea or river (it was a large body of water) and they get flooded, I think, and they are stuck sitting on a huge bronze hand (?) until the water recedes.

Can someone help me with this??

  4. Royal prisoners

Hi Dramabeans! A while ago I saw the beginning of a historical drama. I can’t remember the title so am unable to find it. It began with a king wading through deep snow. He and his family were prisoners. He was forced to bow before the foreign leader. That is as far as I got. Can you help please? I discovered Korean drama about 2 years ago and am hooked!

  5. Misdiagnosed

I honestly can’t remember much because it’s been a while but I really want to watch this drama. From what I remember the main female character fakes having an illness (to run away from debts I think, but not sure) and she meets a guy who she doesn’t know is actually the one who’s sick and dying and he dies in the end. Please help me.

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

this drama is my guilty pleasure and I've watched it over ten times and I'll probably continue to do so... cjw was awesome and I cried buckets and buckets and, of course, i was in love with the second lead even though he wasn't the most classically handsome of the two.

Read this, it might help answering your question.

Yes, I agree with @nahaluk. It's impossible for anyone to give a specific answer when it comes to Ki-duk Kim's films. I read the review and, though you might find it helpful, it can equally be confusing since there are no definite closures in this film. I had a whole different approach to the finale of Time but that's the beauty in Kim's work: we all watch the same scenes but we don't share the same perspective.

Well, if you change the details around a bit, Flowers for My Life/ I Came in Search of Flowers is #5. Except it's the guy who fakes an illness to run away from debts, but he doesn't know he's actually sick (the girl knows).
The other way around though, I dunno.

i agree, #5 sounds like flowers for my life only switched around. its one of my favorites.
the girl was obsessed with money at the beginning and decided to be a nurse to marry a rich, dying man. the guy, running from debts, is paid to pretend to be a rich guy and take a series of medical tests in the hospital. ends up that he really is dying but he doesn't stay in the hospital long enough to find out. the girl (nurse) decides to chase after him and then brings him to her home...a funeral parlor.
she knows he is dying and thinks he rich. he doesn't know about his medical tests and thinks shes just completely in love with him so there is a lot of comedy and the whole series is done so that you think more about treasuring life and the people around you, rather than focused on the tragedy.
plus its Cha Tae-Hyun; he's always awesome.

Even if #5 isn't Flowers for my Life, it is an excellent recommendation if you love well made Dramas with beautiful insights about Life in the light of Death. One of the few TV shows that makes you laugh, cry, worry, fall in love, and lets you with the sensation than more than a good watch, is an experience. Really insightful, delicate, dry-humored and lovely. My favorite K-Drama.

The first drama seems to be Spring Waltz with Seo Do-young and Han Hyo-joo. I remember the scene described above very well.

#1 sounds like Spring Waltz when the lead (unknowingly) ran into his little half brother and remembered what it was like when his biological dad / their dad made him beg (sell gum) in the streets the same way.

Thank you Avonmarissa and Lburnem..and anyone else who identified it. That is it!!! I watched Spring Waltz years ago, didn't really care for it, maybe that is why I didn't connect it. Now I can finally stop wondering. ?

Don't think she ever faked an illness, though? It's been a couple of years since I watched, but I don't think so.

Well, in Flowers for my Life Na Ha-Na didn't fake an illness, the male lead did ;) . I recommend it, especially if you are going though a loss and you have the strenght to watch it (it can resonate with you in really hard but healing ways).

The plot description of stairway to heaven sounds brutal, so much so that I wouldn't want to see it no matter how popular it is, if that was the only thing. But sometimes it's not so much the destination but the ride there, and usually there are good things about an episodic drama that make up for all of the melodrama, hopefully...

It sounds INSANE and since I'm weird I want to watch it now! My mouth kept getting wider the longer I read the description...wasn't it a really popular drama back in the day?

Drama 2 is Stairway to Heaven, played by Choi Ji-woo and Kwon Sang-woo as the leads. It is more than 10 years old now, as it aired in 2003. And, believe it or not, the very beautiful Kim Tae-Hee (the famous singer Rain's sweetheart) played the "mean lead" you said. She just finished her leading actress role with Joo Won in a fun drama Young Pal.

I'm not sure what dramas/movies these entries are, but I'm pretty sure #1 isn't Spring Waltz since (1) that is one of my favorite dramas, so I remember about 90% of the whole drama after rewatching it who-knows-how-many-times...and (2) the one who was in danger of dying was not the main guy but the main girl. The only health threat the main guy faces is he cut his hand and nerves, which threatened his blooming piano career, and he wasn't born rich but rather adopted by a rich family, which does not match the #1 entry here about the main guy being rich because the rich man in Spring Waltz is the stepdad of the main guy.

Nonetheless, Spring Waltz is a must-watch drama! ~~one love (I love you so) love is a beautiful word~~ ???

Although perhaps the scene people are recalling and linking #1 to Spring Waltz was when he brought his half younger brother home to give him a bath and spoil him...which does make sense, but he never wanted to raise the brother since at this point of the drama, their real dad was still alive...and if I remember correctly, main guy's stepparents never met the half younger brother until the real dad passed away towards the end of drama, so main guy and his stepmom never had a dialogue about raising said kid...and stepmom never had to babysit the younger half brother...

But of course, I can be wrong, too

But I'm at 90% sure #1 is not Spring Waltz ??

#5 a little similar to "Love Tree"? Guy doesn't know he is sick and dies in the end. The only difference is girl is sick but doesn't show it and is usually carefree and rebellious (so it looks like she isn't sick).

I do not recall the scene described in #1 which most fans have attributed to "Spring Waltz ". I have enjoyed watched "Spring Waltz " n would really recommend it for the acting , the beautiful scenery n the story. It is my second favourite of the season's dramas.

To make Stairway to Heaven even more attractive, in the clip below we see a man brutally assaulting a woman in the middle of a shopping mall and no one is trying to help her or even call the cops. Because beating up a woman is okay if you have a good dramatic reason.

#2 Stairway to Heaven. My first time to discover super handsome guy Kwon Sangwoo. hahaha... this is a big hit in my country when it was aired in local TV. btw Park Shin Hye played younger Choi Ji Woo here. and if you watch Three Meals A Day you may want to watch this drama since Lee Seo Jin and Taecyeon are really cute with Choi Ji Woo and Park Shin hye respectively.
#3 I don't watch 'Time' but the description a bit reminds me of 'Birth of A Beauty' except I don't recall the sea or river scene. but the main lady did have plastic surgery and stalked her husband.
