Yong-pal extension (finally) confirmed, to end with Episode 18
by javabeans
Well, fiiiiiiinally! It sure took SBS freaking forever to decide what to do with its medical-thriller-romance drama Yong-pal, and now it’s confirmed that it will extend by two episodes (not the rumored four). That means it will wrap up with Episode 18, which’ll air on Thursday, October 1.
The extension rumors for this drama have certainly been all over the place, and we were waiting for an official confirmation to write about it, not expecting it would take this long. Extension talks started very early into the drama’s run, when each new episode was topping the previous one in ratings, and it broke the 20% ratings barrier (unheard of these days with a miniseries!) within three weeks. Then the plot took a sharp left turn (Episode 9 wut?) and viewers were pretty vocal about it; even media headlines made much of how the plot had gone to ruin overnight.
After that extension talks died down and we heard nothing for a while. Ratings remained high but had leveled off (the most recent episode drew a 19.1%). Then this week, news came out that the show wouldn’t extend at all… and of course, the next day they re-confirmed with this latest—and hopefully final—decision.
I don’t think Yong-pal needs an extension, but I don’t really mind so much, I guess. Two is better than four, and Yong-pal is one of those addictive shows for me where if I dial down my brain (or need for logic) by about 20 percent, I enjoy every episode thoroughly (…except for Episode 9, that was a low point). The plot moves fast enough that if I don’t purposely slow down to examine every plot hole, I’m totally entertained. Mostly, Joo-won makes my day, and he should always be on the verge of grave danger and eternal happiness. Funny how that line is so razor-thin, eh?
This means that Yong-pal’s follow-up drama, mystery-crime-suspense thriller Village: Secret of Achiara, will postpone its premiere by a week, airing its first episode on Wednesday, October 7.

Hehehe! You shouldn't turn off your brain any percentage when watching Yong Pal... au contraire, you turn it on full cylinders and dial it UP a percentage! Your analytic and logical brain are not the only parts you need to watch a drama... your imaginative, creative and inventive mental fluids should also be flowing! Methinks.
This show doesn't spoonfeed its audience. It expects you to make sense of what is going on before it comes up with explanations. It depends on the individual of course, but I don't think it is that inconsiderate for a show to consider that it has a smart enough audience who will catch on to what is going on, without having to explain every minute detail. The audience should be flattered the show thinks you can be that quick on the uptake! Or is it about demographics???
Anyway...
if you turn off your brain and watch Yong Pal, you can come on here and read recaps and get explanations for things you missed, but you would also be doing yourself a great disservice.

@ affie (also, SS and vjy etc)
Oh wow, I dare say my intelligence dialed up after reading all the stuff you posted.
All your thought processes are top class. My YongPal experience has been greatly enhanced through this recap threads. Thanks to you all and dramabeans.
To me, artistic license is pretty much intelligence in its own way. How does one describe an abstract art piece? Does creativity defy logic? Are emotions precise science? Can we measure love?
- Did yongpal promise us a textbook medical show?
- Did yongpal suggest that it's gonna stick to conventional stuff?
- Did yongpal expect to get 20 percent rating before it's airing?
The answer to the above is "no". So to viewers who are upset at yongpal, please dont be coz yongpal team didn't promise a "logical", "straightforward" and "no kisses until last episode" show. And I bet yongpal crew and actors are probably more surprised with the rating than all of us.
- Did yongpal promise an action-packed romance thriller?
- Did yongpal suggest explicitly that the heroine is in coma?
- Did yongpal deliver a nighttime errand doctor who treats outlawed patients to help his ailing sister?
Yes, yes, yes. As far as I know yongpal has been delivering the goods week after week. And I am thoroughly satisfied.

Nah I'm with the dramabean homegirls. I was about to tank Yong Pali after episodes 9 and 10. Heck, I wasn't even really thrilled how the last two episodes ended. Giving them a 2 episode extention is for the writers to correct that s-it the wrote from ep.9 onward. Hopefully the last 6 will get the ratings up and the viwers jazzed about this series again.

@shorebunny. I'm glad you say you were 'about to tank Yong Pali' , so
Im guessing you didn't yet. I agree with Javabeans (whom u referred to as dramabeans, or perhaps you mean the entire site) I just don't agree with the part about dialling down your brain to watch it. I happen to think you require a lot of brain activity to watch it. YP doesn't make lazy, no-questions-asked kdrama watching which is precisely why people got so mad at the slower eps.
As for the writers fixing their 'sh-t' and making ratings go up and more viewers 'jizzed' about the show... Yong Pal is already at the top, viewers are already 'jizzed' about the show...but by all means, let subsequent eps get more ratings and viewership cos this show has nowhere else to go but up.

To be frank, I didn't expect to like yongpal due to a few reasons:
- so much hype - too beautiful posters *grin*
- didn't really watch joo won in many shows so he wasn't my fav actor (Gaksital is good but wars and too many ppl dying are rather depressing)
- sounded a bit like Healer which I adored but I was afraid to see a duplicate persona
At the start of the series, I like the sleek production but I wasn't really invested as scenes on ailing family members, desperate situations and gangsterism are rather common in KDramas
But as the series goes on, I was hooked onto something. It's the character of yongpal which I rarely seen or come across in other kdrama characters:
- Against all odds, he only focused on the right things, saving people and preserving lives
- In dealing with enemies, he chose the higher road and he even saved them
- He was tired and defeated many times but he never once blame others
- He was not accepted and even misunderstood by family (dad), friends and colleagues, but he never resort to vengeance or retaliation
- He was calm, patient, sensible and wise even when the world was about to collapse around him
- He was self sacrificing even though he has nothing to gain
- He kept evil thoughts away and only cherished the good values and memories
- He used his cunning to make things better rather than to acquire something for himself
- He kept no wrongs and as a result, he carried no bitterness or anger towards others
Too good to be true? Perhaps. But kindness and forgiveness never fails. Perhaps these are the qualities that are drawing in the viewers each week.
To enjoy the show, like Javabeans said, dial down the logic and Affie encouraged us to dial up the intelligence, and now let's tune in to our inner selves.

@Shuerei. Totally. I'm usually the type to go against over-hype and baseless popularity when it comes to kdramas. I didn't go into Yong Pal expecting to like it. I really expected to not like it and perhaps watch it as 'filler' for some of the spare time I have now. I havent been loving a lot of stuff lately. Then again... I also havent been watching a lot lately... Last show i did was High Society which was so-so.
But everything you just mentioned about YP is entirely true and made me LOVE it!
I even love Man Shik. This show has a very good cast.

Is Yong-Pal worth watching? I've only been able to watch Twenty Again this cycle and Oh My Ghostess last cycle of dramas because nothing else seemed to catch my eye as really good. I wondered the same. Seems there is a variety of opinion and early on I read comments which compared it to Doctor Stranger - I didn't watch because it seemed a bit of a mess save the actors' performances.
Ratings are not always on par considering some tune in to watch their favorite actors...which I have certainly been known to do as well.

I'd recommend watching Yong Pal if any of the following 7 reasons apply to you;
1. U like good acting. I know people are divided on it, but I personally think the casting is brilliant. I'm not talking Academy Awards or anything... but trust me, all the actors in this show are believable in their roles.
2. U are imaginative, can connect the dots and will be able to adequately suspend belief for some scenes, lol! For example, surgery scenes.
3. U are already a fan of any one of the ensemble cast and would watch any of them eat a bowl of rice, lol.
4. U are already a fan of the genre and enjoy thrills and spills.
5. U like people falling in love quickly. Teeheehee!
6. U like unpredictable shows.
annnnnnd...
7. U are a practical person, who doesn't mind certain actions being taken because they are practical at that very moment and will be subsequently become logical as the story progresses, and also, by some stroke of weird luck, you can relate to some of the subject-matter of the show!
If all these apply to you, you will love this show. If not, you could still have a healthy dose of curiosity, try one episode and decide for yourself. :)

Sorry affie, mermerised
I supposed to post 1.1.4.1. i. in this thread
Just shared above that yongpal is unique because of his character. There is something that resonates in people to make them watch week after week. As @SS, vgy, korini and others also noted, the ratings meant something. People are watching. But why...
Remember when so many people loves misaeng coz working adults can relate to the characters?
I think people are watching yongpal for the same reason. Perhaps at some point in their lives:
- they need something desperately or
- they have been misunderstood or bullied or
- they became victims to false witnesses or
- they were sidelined by gossips or
- they were threatened by greedy people or
- they lost loved ones despite trying so so hard
There's something very human and very ordinary about yongpal. The hardships could happen to anyone but it's how yongpal approaches each day with hope and clear conscience that's both touching and heartfelt. How he kept himself untainted by the wrongdoings of others. And how patience, kindness, forgiveness, self sacrifice can overcome lots of pain in this world. Surely those are the things worth watching week after week.

Watchable if you don't mind switching off your analytical mind ..."Yong-pal is one of those addictive shows for me where if I dial down my brain (or need for logic) by about 20 percent, I enjoy every episode thoroughly (…except for Episode 9, that was a low point)." There are some nice points of action, some comedy (inadvertent sometimes), some suspense, on/off good pace, lots of 'bloody' surgeries and the basic overall story about gaining/re-gaining agency in one's life. Not everyone will find most parts convincing, so that's where one has to dial down the brain. I suppose we can just watch it lightly. :)

Usually when people ask if a drama is worth watching on a drama thread(not Open Thread), either it's an invite to recommend any other drama except the one featured or open a discussion on how good other dramas are in comparison.
If this is a genuine question, I apologize for qualifying it with my preface. I will recommend that you take everything people say here with a pinch of salt. Maybe a teaspoon works better :D
Go and watch 2 episodes for yourself and decide. Usually if a drama doesn't get me by 1st episode, I am more than 50% likely to drop it. If you don't like it, you only waste 2 hours of your time. Will that be better than taking very subjective advice here and miss some fun & entertainment? I leave that to you.

Honestly i think it takes more than 2 episodes to decide effectively, I'd say 4, maybe 6 at the most. I apply this to most TV shows I watch, not just kdramas.
If I really hate what I have seen after 2 episodes though, I usually drop it unless I read overwhelmingly positive reviews about an uptick in quality. Sometimes though, a viewer just doesn't connect with a drama no matter how good it is. This has been my experience with many popular dramas over the years.

I stopped watching after episode 3. I loved the first two episodes, then episode 3 showed signs of a mess starting with sloppy screenwriting and directing - so I stopped, and have been checking back here to skim the recaps and have not been compelled to start back again.
I can suspend logic etc. but lately, Kdrama screenwriters have just gotten so lazy and have been churning out crap. I just don't support that kind of laziness. Yongpal had a good idea but then the writers just plugged in one stupid trope after another. Romance? What? from where? Just too sloppy for me. Directing all over the place too.

That is the main problem with it, and I fear the extension will just add to that.
The basic plot is actually pretty good - the devil is in the details, and you often find yourself wondering "who the hell would ever actually do/say that?". I like it well enough that I just bang my head on the keyboard and move on to the next scene.

@Ohhlie,
How much they are willing to pay a star depends on ratings of their previous drama, box-office receipts of their latest movies, their popularity as measured by the former and also response from netizens and the public, plus their image. That's the star's bankability.
A show featuring top stars get sold for big bucks to large and lucrative overseas markets, like China and Japan, and others.
If you think that $40K per ep is a lot, how about Lee Young Ae and Jeon Ji Hyun getting $85K, or Choi Ji Woo and Song Hye Kyo getting $60K or so? These are the biggest and brightest stars among K actresses. You can find big investors more easily when you have big names lined up for your project, more high value PPLs, more pre-production sales, etc.
That's why as fans, we want our fav star's drama to get fantastic ratings, cos that has a real impact on their pocket-books.

The top paid actors on Hollywood TV shows would get anywhere from $1 million to $1.5 million.
Charlie Sheen (Charlie Sheen!!!) got $2 million per ep for that crappy show "Two and Half Men."
Kelsey Grammer got paid $1.6 million per ep for "Frasier" and that was for 2002-04.
Tim Allen got $1.25 million per ep for "Home Improvement" and that was "way back" in 1998.
The "Friends" cast, Helen Hunt ("Mad About You") and Kaley Cuoco are the actresses who have gotten a million per ep.
Other actresses like Mariska Hargitay have gotten $500k per ep (which is pretty good for a larger, ensemble cast show).
Of course, the US market is a good bit larger than the South Korean market and the rights of popular US shows are sold around the world ("Prison Break" was more popular in Korea than the US).
Big reason why so many British and Aussie actors come to Hollywood and why Korean entertainers try to expand to the Japan and now China markets.

You forget why they get these salaries. First of all it's about ratings. HIghly rated tv series charge MASSIVE ADVERTISING DOLLARS for folks to get their business//products to the highest amount of viewers watching the show. The higher the advertising $$, the more the actors on the show can ask the networks for more $ per episode when contract negotiations come up.

Surely it's nothing compared to their US counterparts, but probably it's the average in Asia.. In my country actors also get paid around $40k-50k per ep per drama and it has much more eps than your usual kdrama.
The money comes the most from advertising, PPL, and of course sponsors. Of course the network also give the funding, but not enough to cover entire production. Higher ratings means higher chance to get more ads and ads=revenue.
During Hyde Jekyll Me days, Hyun Bin is said to be paid 70% of the production money, so you can imagine how much production money goes to the stars.
Also, it doesn't mean the stars get the fat paycheck fully. Because the paycheck also for their entourage (manager, stylists, make-up artist, etc) and the agency.

Even though, the plot took a sharp left turn at ep 9, I personally think that was what they meant by "unique melodrama"?

Finally! I'm torn with this news though. Yay because more Joowon on my screen and I need to see more of him especially since he will soon be going to the army. Nay because more lack of sleep for bb. Poor guy. And another nay because the extension may give more room for missteps. It is back on track now so please please...
I agree with everything that JB said about Yongpal. It is so addicting. I realized that what I like about the show is how viewers don't know what will happen next. Yes, we can guess but somehow the show does something so unexpected. At the end of every episode I ask, "What now? What will happen?" I find it to be more fun and engaging than the shows I've watched wherein I can pretty much predict what will happen next and that is exactly what's given in the end.
I look forward to what will happen next week.

I watched last week's episodes and almost dropped this drama. They were very much low points and threw the trajectory of the show off so much that I almost didn't want to bother watching how they'll try to get everyone back on track. I debated spending two hours watching and finally decided today to catch up and the show has gotten better. Don't think it needs the 2 episode extension but let's see what they'll do with it.
I never thought I would be one to ask a drama to give us less couple scenes and more action/melo, but last week was more than enough lovey-dovey to last me till the end of the run LOL poor Joowon I hope he gets a lot of rest after this because he looks so tired ):

If you are so analytical, and always want logic in every scene, i will say, Yong Pal is not for you. :)
High rating doesn't mean this drama is perfect. It has flaws here and there. Nevertheless, I can tolerate the moderate sum of illogical , provided that the plot is worth to watch.
I am glad it will not be extended to 24 episodes, 18 episodes is OK and acceptable :)

I laughed as your comment brought this passage to mind:
"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."
"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

"if anyone can believe Alice in Wonderland, Yong Pal should be a cinch."
@Affie, I love to read your comments, but this is a stretch don't you think? While both are fiction, Alice in Wonderland is fantasy genre and YongPal is not, so the story has to make sense within the confines of real world. Yongpal can't suddenly jump down rabbit holes now, can he?
Affie
September 16, 2015 at 3:06 PM
@KDramaNewbie. Yes, of course... Lol. I agree with you completely. It would be a stretch to compare a fantasy with a real life story. That's why I said they should not be compared on that level.
Alice in Wonderland is a classical literary masterpiece. No doubt, Yong Pal is a small-screen medical action revenge thriller. So i m talking about suspension of belief here... I'm not talking about Yong Pal dropping into rabbitholes here... I'm saying if Alice in Wonderland could take your mind on such a whirlwind of a journey... It shouldn't be hard for anyone to let Yong Pal with its inexplicables to do same. Its just a drama.
But I do get it if it's not measuring up to your kdrama palate. Cheers.

I'm very busy but tuned in to Yong Pal when it started airing. Was excited with ep 1 - 6 then 7-8 were a bit meh. I wondered if I should try continuing so I asked mom how's episode 9 and she said it was sooooo boring but episode 10 was great.
For the first time in my history of watching dramas, I skipped an episode. Opted to read the recap here (thanks~ <3) and just jumped into ep 10. Thus I spared myself the disappointment and wasted time and I'm back to enjoying the show. :D So to those who are wondering, you too can skip ep 9. lol

I don't think people should skip ep. 9. If you are a kdrama fan, that wants to see a bit of heterogeneity and diversity in the largely homogeneous kdrama landscape, please don't skip ep. 9.
It also has a lot of heart and tense moments at the end.
I even won't even go as far as to call it slow, it was just a laid-back episode... characters were trying to take stock of where they were at, and what the next step should be. By the end, there was a catalyst that propelled the characters to take necessary action.
I also think its a bit strange to say the plot switched or was turned upside down as though it's a bad thing in stories... plot switches and twists lend unpredictability and suspense to a plot. I understand that it can leave one dissatisfied... but I believe that would be justified only if the story doesn't return to its original trajectory.
By the end of 9, YP did. So I wouldn't recommend skipping it...

The plot of this drama is basically started with action scenes in which Yong Pal did all the not-so-logical surgeries but still enjoyable to watch because of Joo Won. He carried the weight of drama for almost first half of drama.
Then, the romance developed, and romance story actually covered mostly in two episodes, which for many of us was quite confusing and it happened so fast.
After the romance episodes, now the revenge is started. The heroine who had been sleeping in earlier episodes drama, and stayed in bed/ hiding after woke up for several episodes, now will get into action. In a meantime, our Yong Pal will not stay quiet, there will be also scenes when he will do the surgery.
i also wish the second leads character will be developed nicely. i want to see how villain actually our heroine's brother and his history, as well as second female lead.
One thing I found myself enjoy this drama because all leads are smart in their own way. No one plays victim all the time. Even for heroine, who is bedridden in earlier episodes, also has a smart brain even she cannot moving anywhere. i am glad they made her character is smart and not relying solely on our hero.

You should read @Vgy7*uhb at number 13.1.1 in Yong Pal recap for ep 12. She put up a very strong case with comparison and analysis of 3 dramas which aired at the same time earlier this year - Healer, Hyde, Jekyll and Me and Kill Me, Heal Me. Their numbers were 8.6%, 5.5% and 10.1% respectively. Total 24.2%
Now compare this with Wed/Thurs dramas SWWTN 7.4%, Assembly 5.3% (avg of ep 1 - 18)and Yong Pal at 17.3%(avg of ep 1 -12). Total 30%. You can see that there's a difference of 5.8% more viewers in current group and it's all due to Yong Pal.
A similar pattern can be seen from the preceding batch - Warm & Cozy(7.4%), Masked Prosecutor (5.74%) and Mask(10.8%). Total 23.94%
(average numbers taken from wikipedia AGB nationwide)
Your statement only holds true if Yong Pal is 17.3% and the 2 competitors share the remaining 6.7%(take 24% - 17.3%) at 3.4% each. Then you can justify and say that Yong Pal took the lion share because the other 2 are dismal.
About the draw of the leads, I don't think KTH nor JW has the star power or fanbase like Jeon Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun.

I am in minority, coz for me Kim So Hyun is not someone that i will attract to watch. As I said, i am in minority that had not completed My Love from Another Star, most probably because of Kim So Hyun. In Producer, factor from all casts are quite strong so i just watched it. As for Jeon Ji hyun, she is A-rated actress in Korea, nevertheless i never saw her in anything probably because she had done many movies and My Love from Another Star was her comeback. im not watching kmovies so much, thats why i didnt know about her.
KTH's name alone is quite big in Korea, not as one of the great actress, but more on star and celebrity. Joo Won is indeed a great actor, even his name is not top as Kim So Hyun. As what you stated on the comparison above, the different percentage in viewers its due to Yong Pal. I will say, the uniqueness of this drama, its storyline maybe not that extraordinary, but still not cliche, and casts power contribute to the high rating.

i don't know why you have to present and compare the ratings. the logic is simple. compared to other dramas yong pal is better so a lot of people watched it.
your argument may be true but "word of mouth" is enough just to make a drama a hit/flop. so i'm guessing the first few episodes were put on a hype so much is drew viewers to watch it.
and also i'm not saying anything bad about the drama. i am actually enjoying it. even though i found a lot of lapses in logic i still find it interesting..
KTH is popular IN KOREA. And for the nth time i'll say this. Korea doesn't care about international audiences. If Park Shin Hye or Lee Min Ho is popular internationally, they are nothing compared to Won Bin or Jeon Ji Hyun who is very much loved by korean people..

@endz. I really like the part where you explain that Korean dynamics and international dynamics of kdrama loving have a distinct separateness. I think it's great. And im being genuine here. I think there's an ownership of the genre that outsiders need to respect. So that arguments about which shows deserve which ratings can die down a bit, if not, completely. And especially when they are coming from people who are not within the system.
But it also interests me that you say the show may have benefited from a 'hype' and 'word of mouth' that other shows don't get. If that's the case then it makes our arguments on this page pretty circular.
Why would people 'hype' a show or try to expand the viewership of theshow by 'word of mouth' if this show wasn't a good show.
And why don't the other shows get the same 'hype' and 'word of mouth' royal treatment? It comes back to same argument about this show having the right combination of the things a substantial no. Of people want from their show. I think that's one of the simple points genuine fans of the show are trying to make.
Also, thanks for confirming the actual popular stars in Korea. I'm happy KTH is one of them :).

Your ratings analysis is very correct. It's the first drama after a long time that obviously attacted NEW audience to Wed-Thu zone. Somewhere I read that brought men in front of the TV which is a very hard feat. On the qualitive facts I believe that international "fans" have a distorted idea about who can attract audience and to which degree. My observation is that we're made to believe that some stars are "mega" where in fact other parameters besides popularity are key in the casting like network policies, agencies, ads, scheduling and most of all who's putting the money and why.

It isn't so much a case of a person being oh-so analytical and/or logical that could cause dissatisfaction with watching Yong Pal, its almost more of an inability to be imaginative and inventive with the portions of the story the writer expects you to grasp.
Not trying to slander anyone or show here, lol, but people, like shows, can and should be categorised so that apples are not compared to oranges...
Certain shows have a number of different plots and sub-plots, genres and sub-genres... such shows shouldn't be compared to shows with essentially one major plot and one clear genre. Becos obviously one will be more easily (and I use 'easily' tentatively here) executed than the other. Why? Because the time provided for both shows are essentially the same... an hour per show... two hours per week. Ergo a show with more characters, multiple genres, plots, etc... should have more to explain than a show less characters, one plot and one genre, to satisfy everyone!
And it is more than apparent that people are gonna be able to choose from a buffet of what they have before them, what to nitpick and what to find logical.
It's that simple.

Hi @Affie, I am more of a logic type of person yet I have no problem grasping this drama.
When I watch dramas, I usually dial down my brain as Javabeans call it or suspend my sense of logic. Strangely for Yong Pal, I ended up doing the exact opposite.
For a start, I watch the show in my usual mode and enjoy the exhilarating ride. Occasionally, questions may surface. I mull a little, run over some scenes or dialogues and find almost all the answers to my questions. Some just needed to be uncovered in the next episode or as the plot progresses. It’s not perfect of course. Things I found unbelievable for example were YJ surviving the suicide fall, incompetent nurse serving the VIP clients but they were generally things which I could ignore.
My conclusion is that most kdramas spoon feed you or like you said, simple storyline, one major plot, one genre and therefore simpler to follow. Yong Pal is not baby food or romantic mush, you need to cut, chew and savor.

I echo the sentiments of a lot of people here, in that, things were amazing at the beginning ... episode 7 was were it just kinda fizzled and episodes 8 to 9 were a continuation of this. While episodes 10 and 11 have picked up, the initial excitement and interest has dwindled for me. Akin to flat coke, it's fizzy at the beginning and I'm enjoying the drink, then it goes flat and I'm only drinking it because I'm thirsty LOL.
Anyway, for me, I don't think drama is anything spectacular...and we all know ratings means NOTHING. Dialing one's what? Well, if I do that, I will not fully appreciate and understand what this drama is. For one, its not all action. You need to use your brain to understand what it wants to convey. The "dull" moments are actually full of information. And does this means, those who watched and made the ratings high, do not use their brain while watching. Ouch. What a poke on the Korean audience side. I do not think they are, they pretty much understand what this drama is, because for me its based on their own setting, what is happening around them and that makes it engaging to watch.. and see, extension. It just shows they like it.
Anyway, I will just sit, relax and watch this drama. Seeing Joo Won in two more episode is a real treat considering I have been waiting for a long time for him to be in my small screen again. Ahhh.. he makes me warm and hot all over. ^^

Just read the comments section in the last few episodes and you will see that just as there are "overzealous" fans raving over Yong Pal, there are "overzealous" readers ranting on the drama.
Having said this, I always feel it's easier to understand why people get overzealous in raving over something they like. It's more difficult to understand when people get overzealous in ranting over something they don't like.

My reply is also with reference to your comment at 16.
I do accept that other people's opinion is different from mine for example "I think Yong Pal is boring" or "The romance didn't work for me" I didn't call you out for saying that Yong Pal isn't worth the clamor. That is your opinion which is subjective. If I say it's worth it. it's also subjective.
I only took issue with the fact that you made a general statement that Yong Pal is number 1 due to lack of competition and Kim Tae Hee. First, this thing about lack of competition. I think it's rather insulting to the other two dramas - SWWTN and Assembly. The ratings figures also show that compared to earlier batches of Wed/Thur dramas, SWWTN and Assembly's numbers weren't that unusual. The one that stood out is Yong Pal's numbers are significantly higher than any number 1 drama in their time slot previously.
I used the numbers to show that Yong Pal is not number 1 simply because of lack of competition. I actually agree with you that it's better and a lot of people watched it :D
I am not a fan of Kim Tae Hee but from comments here and k netizens, can I just say it's a mixed bag? I know she has a sizeable fanbase but again is she reason that Yong Pal is number 1? I like numbers so bear with me. Her last drama before Yong Pal was Jang Ok Jung, right? It has an average rating of about 9.8%. For a 2013 drama, I don't think it's high.
By the way, in case you think I am anti-KTH, I am not. I really enjoy her performance as Yeo Jin and think she's a far better actress than many credit her for.

I find KTH sweet, likable and relatable and I can see she is improving a lot with each show. Now on the other hand, Lee Jun Ki is a great actor and who wouldn't wanna watch SWWTN? But as we can see, acting alone and even flawless and logical script don't necessary draw high ratings. Twenty percent of South Korean viewers are onto something that click with them.

- Perhaps they can't help but cheer the guy who has nothing getting the girl who lost everything? Or
- Maybe they are just awed by the multiple players involved and the intrigues that lurk behind each plot? Or
- Likely, they really like all the allies who put their lives and careers on the line for the likable hero...the nurses, Doo Chul, Chae Young etc.... And even Sec Min?
Or simply because they (and we) want to watch something hopeful in a world of chaos, strength and love in a jaded and hateful world....
Seriously, if more than 24 percent viewers liked an alien in the Man from the Stars or something - what's so illogical about 20 percent audience watching a doctor ...

That is pretty much what I got from his and the agreeing posts.

No, actually I think most people don't care that much what the ratings are as long as I like it. The two other shows currently running that I like better have much lower ratings, but I am certainly not "butthurt" about it.

@SS. Oops... Sorry for the double post. I switched phones. I was having trouble posting earlier on the other phone. This one is already synced with some accounts so I typed Joo Won for privacy. It's still Affie here. Lol.

It was a little jarring that the show took so many episodes to establish their relationship. While I still think that the "fanservice" was unnecessary, I'm glad that I'm still watching, from episode 10 onwards Yong-pal has picked up its pace again and is back on track. That being said, this week's cliffhanger is gasp-and-on-the-edge-of-your-seat amazing!
And c'mon, its JOO WON. ♥

It could also be demographics. Less women liking it than men. Or people of a certain age group liking it better than another age bracket... Let's not forget that. :)

Because of the recaps (which I continued to read, even after dropping the show) I am going to pick up Yong Pal again.
I will probably zip through episode 9. though.

Just my two cents...
I like everything about Yong Pal except the romance. Which for me, is a huge surprise since I mostly prefer romance to other genres. I guess the way the romance was introduced didn't jive for me, so I have a hard time accepting it. I just fast forward through their kiss scenes.... either that or I laugh uproariously.
Second... Kim Tae Hee is surprisingly beautiful, I've seen her before and thought she was plain. This is the first drama in which I could stand to watch her. I disliked her intensely in "My princess" where I found her acting too phony and too cutesy... like treacle. But she's doing so well in Yong Pal and pulling her weight.
Oh! And the only reason I'm sticking with Yong Pal is because there really are very few other kdramas currently airing that catch my interest....so for me I would say it's because of a lack of competition :-)

My big problem with the romance is that it does not seem like a romance at all.

Everyone entitle on their own opinion. Not everyone feel the same, and mostly quite agreed on the romance issue in this drama. As for me, in every drama i watched, i dont care about romance so much. Normally i just skipping romance scene, esp kissing scene aha.

I thought this was 20-episodes, but was surprised to find out it was only 16. Weird.

It was really just 16. And now extended to 18. The rumors about it being 20 or 24 were basically just that - rumors.

Does anyone else feel the modern day Sageuk vibe to this drama? I mean the evil brother that wants to kill his sibling to become king, the princess who is trying to fight for her rightful throne, and the middle class doctor that falls in love with the princess.

It's a pretty common theme worldwide, not just in k-dramas. I think over the last 1000 years or so, most European kings and princes spent more time killing family members than they did eating.

yes.. but what do you think will YJ be able to protect her throne?? now we know that hanshin group has dark secrets. (all we know there, hangshin may not be the only one..so i hope they will let go this.) and she will be charged for attempting murder of her brother and chief lee. just hope TH will turn it around. find that evidence that YJ has been drugged for three yrs by Dj..
I hope the end YJ will still be able to protect Th and maintaining her status as the CEo of Hanshin and TH will still be working as a surgeon and change the hanshin...what do you think?
