Yong-pal: Episode 14

There’s a new ruler sitting on the Hanshin throne, one who isn’t afraid to show her iron fist in the face of her enemies. While taking over may have been a relatively easy task, Yeo-jin will find that staying in power is an entirely different matter. As Yeo-jin continues to exercise her revenge muscles, it gets increasingly harder to see past the consequences of the decisions she carries out. Love may be blind, but there’s a line when things stop being cute and start getting too real. Lesson of the Day: Don’t piss off the chairwoman.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Now that Tae-hyun is married to Yeo-jin, life at Hanshin Hospital is a weee different: trying to avoid the throng of hospital staff waiting to greet him results in the chief of security and the new hospital director to flag him down in the parking lot.

Being greeted by the entire VIP floor has Tae-hyun literally stop in his tracks. He runs back into the elevator, finding everything about this new status way too burdensome, and his personal bodyguard hilariously offers to “take care of” anybody making him feel uncomfortable.

Things only get more troublesome when Chief Shin speaks to him in jondae and bows to show respect. Yet because Chief Shin is older than him and was once his superior, Tae-hyun returns an even deeper bow.

Nurse Ahjumma can’t be more thrilled about Tae-hyun looking more blissful and at peace than ever (and apparently So-hyun must be doing fine in the States). She tells him not to worry about what other people think, though Tae-hyun tosses back that it’s hard when he’s got a constant bodyguard

Nurse Oh comes running excitedly, wanting to hear about the newlyweds’ first night together. She teases him for the dark circles under his eyes, and all but shrugs at his playful retort that joking with the chairwoman’s husband can get her in trouble. But she won’t let it go, and Tae-hyun says there was no wedding night since there was no actual wedding.

She asks if he went through with the proposal then (in Korea, that romantic surprise usually happens sometime between popping the big question and the wedding), and when Tae-hyun is all, What d’you mean?, both women sigh in disappointment at how such a clever man knows nothing about women.

Thankfully the tumor affecting the head maid’s eyesight is operable, and the doctor showers Tae-hyun with praise for catching it early. The proposal idea still fresh on his mind, Tae-hyun has the head maid accompany him while ring shopping.

Back at Han Manor, Chae-young is amused at the long line of the board members who all once served Do-joon now waiting to see Yeo-jin. That is, until she sees her father waiting amongst them. Enraged, she enters the office to confront Yeo-jin about it, only to be coldly dismissed moments later.

Chae-young demands her father to break formation, willing to accept the consequences of defying Yeo-jin. But her father releases himself from her grip and meekly takes his place in line again, much to Chae-young’s grief.

When Tae-hyun checks in on a paranoid-looking Chief Lee, the latter whimpers desperately: “Save me, Tae-hyun.” Yeo-jin is briefed on that very encounter from Secretary Min. When asked what to do with Chief Lee, Yeo-jin rolls her eyes and exasperatedly asks why she needs to answer that.

Chief Lee is shocked to learn about President Go’s alleged suicide while in police custody. He’s convinced that Yeo-jin had a hand in President Go taking his own life, and tearfully tells Tae-hyun that he was merely a lackey to everyone else’s plans. “Please put in a good word with me with Young-ae-nim. That I had no malicious feelings towards her.”

Tae-hyun encourages him to calm down—there’s no need to worry because Yeo-jin is far from evil. But that’s when Chief Lee draws back looking even more suspicious—is Tae-hyun and Yeo-jin trying to put him at ease only to kill him off later?

To that, Tae-hyun reasons with him about how he wouldn’t have saved his life if his ultimate goal was to do away with Chief Lee. But the sense of guilt from the past three years is too much for Chief Lee to handle, and in between his sobs, he’s convinced that Yeo-jin will kill him.

He remembers the piercing look in her eyes all too well, and even thinking about it haunts him. Tae-hyun reminds Chief Lee that all he has to do during the investigation is to confess that he was acting on Do-joon’s orders, but Chief Lee interrupts him: People like Do-joon are above the law.

His laughs turns into sobs once more as he cries, “I should never have gone into the operating room with Yeo-jin in the first place. I should have just gone to your mother.” Tae-hyun can hardly believe what he’s just heard and grabs Chief Lee to say it again.

Scarface’s police transport gets ambushed on the road with one car rear-ending the van while another crashes into its side. His rescuers pull Scarface out of the flipped van, but instead of releasing him from his restraints, they tase him.

Back at the hospital, Tae-hyun is still reeling from the truth as told by Chief Lee: Yeo-jin had been wheeled into the hospital on the same night as Tae-hyun’s mother. All the surgeons had congregated around Yeo-jin’s operating room, hoping to get a moment to shine and operate on the VVIP.

This included Chief Lee and his superior, the latter of whom was supposed to go operate on Tae-hyun’s mother. His superior had ordered him to leave instead, but when Yeo-jin had started to crash, Chief Lee was tagged into the surgery.

It was much later when Chief Lee had heard that Tae-hyun’s mother had died. “Tae-hyun, I was going to go. But I was suddenly put into Yeo-jin’s surgery… I only recently learned the truth, that she was your mother. I deserve to die, but Tae-hyun… save me.”

Detective Lee doesn’t have much of a lead on Scarface’s disappearance since his captors switched cars during their escape. We see that it was Secretary Min who had ordered his kidnapping, and Scarface gets kicked into the deep in the ground and is buried alive.

Upon his return to Han Manor, Tae-hyun barely opens the door to Yeo-jin’s office to witness a board member pleading with Yeo-jin that he was merely following orders. What a pity that President Go can’t speak on his behalf now that he’s dead, Yeo-jin muses. “Did I shut him up too early?”

The man falls to his knees and begs for mercy, but Yeo-jin is unsympathetic to his pleas. She will, however, give him one last chance: bring the ledgers from her father’s time to the recent past by tomorrow. She’ll make her final decision after she sees those documents.

He immediately agrees, eternally grateful for the opportunity. He freezes once more when he finds Tae-hyun waiting outside the office and takes his leave. After witnessing Yeo-jin’s ruthlessness firsthand, Tae-hyun opts to take a walk through the garden (his bodyguard makes sure to keep up with him, aw).

He walks alongside the grounds and steps inside the greenhouse with its overgrown flora. Tae-hyun sits down on a bench to collect his thoughts.

Meanwhile, no one shows up to the press conference Chae-young has arranged. Something tells me that Secretary Min had a hand in that, as he walks into the practically empty room, chuckling at how quaint her attempt was. She tries sending him away, but Secretary Min reminds her that she’ll be the one to leave—she’s no longer the chairman’s wife, and therefore holds no authority anymore.

Tae-hyun breaks into a tiny smile when he sees some lavender in bloom despite the overgrown and deadened vegetation around it. He asks his bodyguard if he knows what once grew in this greenhouse, and although his bodyguard doesn’t know, the head maid does.

Lavender, she replies, but Do-joon had ordered to get rid of the flowers and the greenhouse was left abandoned. She tells the bodyguard that another neighborhood dog found its way onto the grounds, so the bodyguard excuses himself to take care of it.

Aside from sending him on an errand, it’s more of an opportunity for the head maid to speak with Tae-hyun alone. When asked why he thinks his bodyguard chases after the dogs so diligently, Tae-hyun supposes it’s because his bodyguard hates dogs.

No, it’s quite the opposite—she tells him. Perhaps the bodyguard adores the animal so much that even when he’s chasing one of them, he’s also wants to play with the dog. Guessing that the head maid had watched over Yeo-jin ever since she was a girl, Tae-hyun asks what kind of child Yeo-jin was.

“A scary child,” she answers. She tells Tae-hyun about the story we heard earlier, the one about how Do-joon was severely scolded when Yeo-jin was injured by a rogue tennis ball. But the very next day, Yeo-jin had ruined the custom-made racquet and vowed never to play tennis again, all in the name of punishing her father.

Tae-hyun considers little Yeo-jin’s actions as cute, and he still finds her cute today. From that day forward, everyone feared the little girl who would dare to punish her own father. But Tae-hyun still finds a reason to sympathize with Yeo-jin: “She must have been lonely. Burdened by living in a wealthy household, she had to live among adults, afraid of throwing tantrums.”

She asks if Tae-hyun isn’t afraid of Yeo-jin after seeing her ruthlessness in these past few days. “I’m not scared,” Tae-hyun replies. “I feel sorry for her.” When she says Tae-hyun must love Yeo-jin very much, he says that he does.

Later that evening, Yeo-jin invites Tae-hyun to sit at the end of the table. He asks if that seat isn’t usually reserved for the chairman (or chairwoman in her case), but she tells him that this seat is for the head of the household.

He’s reluctant to take it, but sits down with Yeo-jin’s insistence. Tae-hyun admits that sitting here feels weird, but Yeo-jin says that their future children would probably like seeing their father sitting in this seat.

When he says nothing, she wonders if he doesn’t like the idea of having children. Tae-hyun tells her that he does like it, and the two exchange warm smiles.

During dinner, Yeo-jin sets his favorite food in front of him. When he asks how she knew, she replies that So-hyun had told her the last time they spoke over the phone. Tae-hyun’s grateful that his wife is checking up on his sister, and Yeo-jin happily shares that So-hyun is improving so much that she can probably be scheduled for surgery in a month’s time.

When Tae-hyun asks if he can ask for a favor, Yeo-jin is more than happy to do anything for him. But her smile fades when she hears what it is: “Stop your revenge. Don’t do anything to Chief Lee.”

Yeo-jin takes a beat before calling up a smile and plays dumb to the idea of harming Chief Lee. “I know that you’re planning to kill him,” Tae-hyun says. She says it’s for both their sakes, but Tae-hyun disagrees. “It isn’t. Don’t do it.”

Setting down her chopsticks, Yeo-jin takes a sip of her water before saying that out of everyone, Chief Lee has most reason to die. He kept her locked in a dark hell for three years, and furthermore cut her carotid artery in her immobilized state. “And I should forgive someone like him?”

Tae-hyun sympathizes with her feelings, but her revenge won’t right the wrongs committed against her. “It’s just murder.” She asks if justice is served if Chief Lee is never punished for his crimes, but Tae-hyun says that’s not what he means. Why should she carry out the sentence herself?

Taking the legal route will do little for her case, when the crime was carried out in secret. It would be her word against his and furthermore, she would have to expose her own vulnerabilities in court. “If there is no revenge… there is no justice, either.”

Yeo-jin: “I am the ruler of the crocodiles. If I expose even the tiniest of weakness to them… they will try to rip me apart and drag me down. That’s why they need to feel fear. That if they dare to do something like that to me… I have to show them what will happen to them. If I don’t, someone else who’s capable of doing that will show up. And now, you and I share the same fate. Because you are my heir.”

She looks to Tae-hyun and asks him to fall in line with her. If he doesn’t, he’ll be in danger himself. Er, from their enemies or from you?

She tries changing the subject, but Tae-hyun refuses to let this go. “You can change. You have the power to do that right now. People can’t take you lightly even if you forgive them.” Her revenge could ignite a vicious cycle of others trying to take revenge on her. “So forgive them, please.”

Tae-hyun is a good person and that’s why she likes him, but he won’t ever be able to understand how she feels, Yeo-jin tells him. “Because you weren’t locked in darkness for three years. Because you weren’t trapped in your own body where you couldn’t move a finger or bat an eyelash. Because you’ve never prayed… to be allowed to die.”

Tears fall from her eyes as she vows to punish everyone who locked her up in her own prison. She finds it a pity that Nurse Hwang and the hospital director were killed before she got her hands on them.

Over at the hospital, Nurse Oh is caught off-guard when the chief of security arrives to take away Chief Lee to the psych ward. When Tae-hyun receives a text about the transfer, he confronts Yeo-jin once more about the people she intends to punish for keeping her in a coma.

Her father was the one who placed her under in the first place, and it was Do-joon who kept her in that comatose state. Therefore, Chief Lee isn’t to blame—he’s but a lackey who sold his soul for a sum of money.

She’s taking her anger out on a puppet, and if they’re going to be splitting hairs, then Tae-hyun can also be counted as an accomplice. It’s true that Chief Lee committed a grave sin against her and can be counted as an enemy, but she can’t kill him. “I can kill him,” Yeo-jin whispers, new tears welling up in her eyes. “I won’t ever forgive him.”

“What about me then?” Tae-hyun asks. “How am I supposed to forgive you people?” Ack, are we going to talk about your mom right now? Yeo-jin says she’s done nothing that requires his forgiveness, to which Tae-hyun simply returns, “Would that really be true?”

One last time, he asks for her to put a stop to her revenge, then takes his leave. He stops for a moment when he hears the sound of broken glass behind him.

Bound and gagged, Chief Lee freaks out when he’s led down to the operating room. But that’s when the chief of security receives the order to put a temporary halt to their plans, and Chief Lee is told that today is his lucky day.

Late that night, Do-joon is told that he is free to leave. He asks if President Go took care of matters on his end, and he’s told that everything went well. He’s escorted outside and given the Fake One USB, and Do-joon is in the middle of relaying his regards to the chief prosecutor when he finds that his escort is already headed the other way.

Do-joon walks out of the building, wondering why there’s no fanfare to greet him. He stops himself from calling Secretary Min, and tries calling President Go instead, but of course the call goes unanswered.

He’s two steps past the gate when a call from President Go’s phone comes in. Do-joon asks his son to put his father on the line, only to learn that President Go can’t… because he’s dead.

Do-joon reels at the news, and not too far off, Chae-young witnesses his shocked reaction from her car. He tries calling Secretary Min (whom he has saved as number 1 on his speed dial) but can’t get through. Do-joon can only laugh at the absurdity of this situation.

He picks up when Chae-young calls him, though, and confirms that he was released today. He acts as if no one can keep him down for long, but seems touched that she thought to call him. Chae-young says they called her today because she’s a family member.

Do-joon rests on the word “family,” and lies that he’s already heading out for drinks with the board members who came out to see him. It’s pretty pitiful watching him try to hail a cab while trying to put on a tough bravado to Chae-young, who asks if he’s trying to grab a taxi.

He says he is before catching himself a second later and searches his surroundings to try and spot Chae-young. He sees her parked across the street and asks if it feels good seeing him like this. She says it does, though the tears in her eyes suggest otherwise.

“I’m sorry, Chae-young,” Do-joon says. She asks if he knows how to feel sorry, and he nods. Their conversation turns to mundane topics, as she asks if he’s eaten yet. They agree to go out for drinks, and when Chae-young offers to come to him, Do-joon says he’ll come to her. Oh crap, this has trouble written all over it.

But Chae-young insists that this time, she’ll walk over to him. There are tears forming in Do-joon’s eyes too and he concedes.

At that moment, a black car comes speeding down the road and crashes into Do-joon. Chae-young gasps and gets out of the car while Do-joon speak with a man in black. When he says his injuries seem minor, the man says that won’t do, then wields a stun baton against him.

Do-joon falls to the ground and the man in black tells him not to die before getting back into the car and driving off. Chae-young runs over to his side and gasps again to discover that Do-joon has sustained a head injury.

An ambulance literally shows up two seconds later to collect the unconscious Do-joon, and instead of asking how in the world an ambulance came to his aid so quickly, Chae-young asks the hospital staff where they’re taking her husband.

But there’s no need to ask because the logo on the ambulance answers her question: Hanshin Hospital.

COMMENTS

Hanshin Hospital, the one place you don’t want to receive medical treatment if you’ve committed a wrong against any of its CEOs. Because you can either end up in a coma, be sent to the psych ward (only to be sent in for surgery), or be attacked in the middle of the street. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought Yeo-jin’s takeover was a surprisingly seamless one, though still curious as to what kind of leader she’d shape up to be.

So in a way, I’m a bit let down that Yeo-jin isn’t so different from Do-joon in that her rule is rooted in instilling fear, though I have to give her kudos for being much more cunning that he ever was. A constant threat of death may keep her former enemies in line for now, but like Tae-hyun said, revenge is a vicious cycle and can only perpetuate more vengeance by someone else. While Yeo-jin does have a point that the people who kept her under deserve to be punished, I just hope that her reasoning of being trapped in the darkness for years won’t come back to bite her. That truth is both her motivator and her weakness, and I want Yeo-jin to use that to her advantage than a crutch to fall back on. Although as of now, she’s dead set on carrying out her own punishments… until Tae-hyun has something to say about it.

Which has me believe that even in her cold-heartedness towards her enemies, her feelings for Tae-hyun are genuine. Making a case for Chief Lee wasn’t easy on Tae-hyun’s part, but it’s a sign that Tae-hyun still has an ability to persuade Yeo-jin to change her mind. For now, at least. Things might seem like marital bliss at present, but I can’t help but wonder whether Yeo-jin would consider using Tae-hyun or threaten him one day if he stood in her way.

Speaking of enemies, I honestly felt bad for Chief Lee, who has officially been driven mad by the ongoing revenge. Then there’s Do-joon, who has always been too much of an oaf in his own plans to consider as a real villain. It was nice that he and Chae-young were able to start making amends (even if it’s because they’re both powerless now) though it looks like that’ll be short-lived. A small part of me hopes that Do-joon won’t die just yet for a couple of reasons: first, because we still have four episodes ahead of us, and second, there won’t be anyone else for Yeo-jin to exact revenge on if he dies too.

Things are much more fuzzy now that Tae-hyun has learned about the connection between Tae-hyun’s mother and Yeo-jin that night. The idea that Yeo-jin was the VVIP that night has long been speculation, so I’m glad there was a confirmation on that front. But if this episode has taught me anything, it’s that love can be a very powerful thing where Tae-hyun can refrain from using his mother’s death against Yeo-jin and still somehow see past her cruelty towards her enemies. And while I can understand that love can often make people blind to their flaws, I was honestly astonished that he thought it was cute how little Yeo-jin tried to punish her own father by destroying a valuable possession and he still finds her cute now.

I know you love her and everything, Tae-hyun, but she can do a lot more than rip a tennis racquet apart now. She also knows what your favorite food is too, so just swim with caution in that crocodile pond, Yong-pal.

Uh…. wow! Did they switch cinematographers? Crews? Editors? It’s like the show has picked up where episode 6 left off. Suddenly we’re back at the original cinematography, pacing and style. And there was even character development! And meta humor about Joo Won’s dark circles. Did the drama fairy stop by the set? By all means, keep sprinkling that fairy dust!!

Well thanks-a-lot for your comment re cinematography, pacing and style. Now I'm going to have to go back and rewatch everything! No, really, I'm glad you're astute enough to pick up on these things, I'm not, but want to learn. Love how this show continues the twists and turns. I can see them having the wedding in the newly remodeled greenhouse, full of lavender, then having a honeymoon on top of wind mountain! I wasn't so sure about their love until this episode and since Tae-hyun has been the constant good guy who's able to change people's minds, surely he will change Yeo-jin. Maybe the knock in the head will knock some sense into Do-joon and he'll become a nice guy and she can leave the chairmanship (like she had wanted to) to him. I can see her putting him in the coma chair though.

"wedding in that green house and honeymoon on the hill of the wind"

You two are so clever! I didn't see that, but I'm sure that you're spot on about what will happen. If it's not a wedding in the green house (bc it could happen in the church) then it will, at least, be a proposal in the green house. Well spotted!

I'll come back and comment more later. Am working....

Bring the green house back to its original glory, and bring YJ back onto that Hill of the wind! A romantic end to a fun ride.

killing President go and all the things secretory Min is doing is YJ order then this is exactly going in the opposite direction of your happy ending ( she will have to go to jail leaving our yong pal).
Turning YJ to dark was unexpected twist in the series (surprise is good) but hope the writer can give a happy ending (because my wish is also for above things to happen)

I love Kim Tae Hee's dark turn in this one...finally she is getting to show her acting chops. I had written her off as an actress prior to this drama..

I'm not a super keen fan of KTH's acting, but have always thought it didn't deserve the kind of vitriol that it often got.
There was no doubt that her beauty surpassed her acting, but that didn't in itself mean that her acting was the crap that ppl often made it out to be either. She wasn't an acting power house, but few actresses are known for being such.

I guess it just comes with the territory. The more beautiful you are the more your acting is scrutinized and your flaws amplified. It's people's way of saying that they are getting by on their looks without actually being too mean about it.

My favorite part of this episode has got to be the dinner scene, when Yong Pal says “What about me then?”, “How am I supposed to forgive you people?”

I think that the scriptwriter and actors have done a very good job writing and improvising dialogues for Yong Pal. We have got real substance in many lines said by the characters. I wonder what Yoo Jin will do when she discovers she and her family are the reason that causes Tae Hyun's pain to perpetuate for so many years.

This episode makes me adore Tae Hyun. Before, I was a little confused about him because I think he is too unbelievably kind despite his circumstances, which bothers me, because I want a character who is real. But, in this episode, when the drama spends tim on his crying scene and walking scene after discovering the truth, I get to witness him struggling among his love for Yoo Jin, his love for his mom, his guilt, his pain. Yet, in the end, he chooses to do the kind thing. He is a real gem that can teaches us a lot about humanity.

BUT, my ideal ending would still be:

yongpal goes to america to reunite with his sister where he meets with cynthia park. she teaches him english and he manages to get a scholarship to get his PhD. he and cynthia park live happily forever after because they are perfect for each other.

I believe there will be a falling out and then the reconciliation will be by the mountains. Possibly, a trip to America will be the separation/falling out and then the mountain scene...

And yes, Cynthia should be included again in the additional episodes...she's in America...

We hold vigils for her everyday :'(

She's like female Mo Il Hwa. We want her baaaaaaack. Though I love that Yeojin went dark.

It just seems more fuuuuuun. Lots of things happening. Plus the possible Dojoon-Chae-young teaming up to beat some sense into Yeojin. I don't care who wins between them now, they're all evil. But I enjoy watching them fight.

For me, I still believe in YJ in the end. There might be a reason why she was acting like that. There must be something that we don't know. What is happening right now is more suspicious. I believe there's someone pulling the strings from behind making it look like YJ as a culprit. My first suspect is Chief Min. He is so suspicious from the start he started to change sides from DJ to YJ.
I wanna know who are those who sent the letter to Pres. Go. The reason why Chief Min ordered to kill that scar face guy.
I wanna see Do chul will come to the rescue in the next episodes and help TH to uncover the truth(Maybe help TH to find those people who are plotting against them including DJ).
I hope TH and YJ are able to find Nurse Hwang's phone.
Seriously, no matter how Yj creeps me out of her revenge but still I believe in her in the end.
I got the feeling that TH and YJ will be in danger in the next episodes.

I am also highly suspicious of Chief Min. Perhaps YJ is keeping up some kind of "plausible deniability" facade by letting him run amok. But he already betrayed once, no reason to think he won't happily do it again if it serves his own greed.

After all she has been through I hope that YJ does not fall into the same trap of creating way too many enemies like her half brother did.

Chief Min is a puppet. YJ never changed. She is showing her colors and since the beginning had admitted with her own mouth she was the same as her brother and president go. The writer is trying to tell us in this episode even young YJ was a fearless cruel person even to those close to her. In Korea carrying out punishment on one's parent's is consider a sin and filial is held in high regard, Confucius.

She admitted to TH that she killed director go. "I only wish I could've kill them myself." She basically said I ordered their deaths.

@ 9dragon
I agree director/sec/ min was only following her implicit orders.

TH realized that as a child she derived misguided lessons from her father: Punish/reprimand a wrong/neglect. Thus, he pitied the child who took on the burden of a mother alligator, retaliating on those who hurt her loved ones. Now the survival-killer instincts are automatically activated to protect herself and TH.

The saddest thing is that both of them are right. While I don't agree with the "silencing" methods of Pres Go and Scarface, both are beasts and it's only a matter of time before they "expire" Min (also YJ, CY, TH and sister.....)

And remarkably, TH didn't judge her for Pres Go (perhaps since he already died) but only pleaded with her to "pardon" Chief Lee. While at the moment I don't see how, I'd say that TH has quite a lot to teach this group of alligators about life. I'd leave it to the writer, so please writer-nim, don't disappoint us.

My theories:

1. Daesang group might be behind Pres Go who may have been promised something big beyond his current portfolio. There's the police interrogation scene in Ep 13 that TH couldn't figure out Pres Go's motives.

2. Likely daesung group instigated DJ to conspire against YJ. They would have stoked his insecurity until he decided to betray YJ. So, somehow somewhere things went wrong.

3. The way president Go aligned his rescue stealth team, buying up Hanshin shares, attempting to sell Hanshin factory and gathering of the presidents are rather suspicious. Where does he get all his resources? He may own a thriving construction company under Hanshin group but he is no chaebol.

4. Pres. Go may have been threatened by both sec kim and daesung group. Since his attorney should be on his side, he may be relaying the message from daesung. But it's also possible Sec Kim threatened Pres Go and Sec kim would have alerted YJ on his murderous schemes.

Admittedly I find this show irritating and boring. I came for the MacGuyver doctor doing parkour, and all I've ended up with is a confusing tangle of chaebols bowing to each other, killing each other, and occasionally engaging in incredibly silly legal practices. So now I'm going to start making up my own storyline, and that involves a body buried in the lavender garden. Maybe when they unearth it they'll find the person was killed with.... a tennis racquet! DUN DUN DUN!

I miss "I Remember You". Sniff.

LOL. LOL. Miranda, that's funny.

0

I thought "I Remember You" was even sillier and more casual about people who were killed and the killers themselves. What happened to the massacre in Lee Joon Ho's house? Did those people have no families? Were they buried or disappeared? How convenient. You get 2 psychopaths on a killing spree and what did everyone do? Lee Hyun had many teas and meals with Lee Joon Ho and carried deep conversations about psychology. He even had a nice chat with him after Joon Ho knifed his little brother, so pretty! I guess there are more silly things than legal practices.

0

And we all know that purple flowers weren't a good sign in that drama...

0

@Dazzle, the fact that the three male leads were mentally off was my favorite thing about IRY! None of them behaved in a normal fashion, and all of the other characters constantly noted how weird they were.

The massacre bodies "disappeared", which was Lee Joon Ho's MO - no idea where he put them. At one point Hyun gets visibly excited about the next murder he's sure will happen, and Ji An has to remind him that he's not supposed to be happy about it, even though it's a new "clue". Min at one point truly isn't decided as to whether he's going to let his hired goon kill Ji An. They're not normal people, and that's why their interactions are so cool.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the police on that show were mostly competent, and the people acting bizarrely were all mentally off anyhow. So I was good with it.

But here there's no police presence at all and chaebols are murdering interconnected people at will. Anyone who looked into one death/murder would find a nest of interestingly interlocking death/murders. I guess I'm disappointed that chaebols are much more casual about the after-effects of murder than chaebols.

0

That was awesome Miranda....I too miss I Remember You :(

0

RE: IRY. (aka. i remember you)
we shall leave certains of the 'make no sense plot" of IRY to the faults of our Star-Writer. ... okay. what we all luv to our core about IRY is the characters of main leads, even characters of supporting roles. that's the awesome part of IRY., and even more, the most genuine and intelligence exchanges the talkbackers posted for a good 8 weeks.. you should just see all the beanie posts,,, while i am still trying to contain my dislike for this icy princess turn crocodile queen.... now what she touches really turn to ice dead... i don't see the layered characters here, except for yongpal himself. and the ajummas nurses... that family massacred in LJY's house, are all not without faults too... except the servants of cause, for whatever reason, to lock a boy up till teenage is never right.
Hyeon has his reason why he can't cuff LJY in, there are no hardcore evidence, else JiAn won't braved the tiger's lair to search for evidence or tempt LJY to leak himself thru a hidden mobile recording.... all in all.. above the spendid characters writing, the essence behind IRY of overcoming your monster within, and trusting your loved ones to overcome, and forgiveness ... is awesome.

TH knows YJ loves the lavender. he will revive that garden for her..it will be full of blooming lavender. maybe in the last episodes.. that's where their kids will play..

All I have to say after watching episode 14: so much pain.

Pain was literally everywhere. I so adore the writer for not letting Yeojin become another personality-less female lead whose only activity is being a doormat. Therefore, I'm glad she didn't just forgive, let it go and live happily ever after with Taehyun - taking out her anger and avenging is so much more realistic and in-character for her. I'm anticipating her to be cured though, as anger is a very short-lived fuel.

Also, kudos to Kim Tae Hee, I hope every one of her doubters is eating one's words now watching her.

I forgot to say:
And I so don't know what to expect, writer is either a mad person or a genius, because the way he's handling this story is so different from every typical kdrama we've recently watched. A bit risky approach, but so far it's been paying off so I hope he can keep up till the last week.

And Yongpal is a very rare case of a drama that I think would end too soon if as planned on episode 16. There's still a lot of material to write about - Sohyun's treatment, Chaeyoung's fall from a grace, Dojoon's revenge(or revenge on Dojoon), whatever's to come for Chief Lee and of course the healing of both our leads.
At this point I can't imagine them living happily and managing Hanshin Group, and I think it was intentional from writer - Yeojin will clean all the mess, avenge all the wrongs and in the end, live quietly with Taehyun somewhere. I bet its going to end like that.

Two and a half more weeks to go then, writer, don't dissapoint me.

Well said, Matt.
Many ppl tuned in expecting an action drama; a few eps in, they got a romance, which disappointed them. Then it changed again.
Personally, I like it very much that it changes colour and flavour on us, and is more multi-dimensional than the average KD.

Besides the leads, I love the supporting cast too.
Her brother and SIL, Cynthia, the nurses, now the housekeeper, are all wonderful.
The male sec is the only one not acted that well, but the actor who plays Dir Go is fabulous. I really appreciate his last shots inside the police interrogation room. So much change of expression and emotions. He does a superb villain.

i hope our writer caps this with an ending fitting to his style... ergo, unpredictable. surely this did make people at Korea watch the show and for all the buzz of complaints, hundreds more are buzzing on YP online. at the current standard of ratings, YP's status is very impressive and i attribute that to the writer and of course the capable cast lead by Joo Won.

love your take on the ending. with all the complaints on the drama's extension, i agree with your that it would have ended abruptly at 16.

Thank you Matt. That's what I've been telling my friends since like forever. Yeojin is not the typical kdrama heroine, so there won't be an immediate I forgive you from her. Her character has to develop, move from serenity (from her time with Tae Hyun before everything went to hell in a basket) to pain, to anger, to the need for revenge, then a slow reconciliation to the fact that for her to change her story, she needs to move beyond her pain. And I'm looking forward to how she will discover that the thing she's done to Tae Hyun, for which she needs his forgiveness is her life being more valuable than his mother. Although technically, that call wasn't up to her, so why is she to blame?

Throwing herself in the window just because he hates her father or to punish him, I think what she did was not a punishment. She throw herself cause she thought being dead without Sung Hoon is much better choice for her than to live her life without him. Just like what happen in the ending of Romeo and Juliet. Her love for Sung Hoon is much stronger.

i don't think it was just love.
I think at that point she really did not want to belong to that whole chaebol lifestyle word anymore.
She thought her boyfriend would take her away, elope to some non complicated place where they could set up house, but in the end, he turned out to be just like the rest.

You can still see that desire for a normal life shine through when she is with TY, power means nothing then, he is appa and sits at the table end, kids will have to look up to HIM.
The poor girl just wants that little house with picket fence and lavender garden and 2.3 kids, greeting hubby home from work with a little peck and some dinner.
But what she gets is a mansion full of servants, a dead garden and enough predators around her to repopulate the serengeti twice over.

0

@Cocobeans

I think this is about YJ jumping out of the window which took place before she knew that Sung Hoon's love was fake.

I agree with @shirayukihime. The main reason is that she couldn't bear to live anymore because with Sung Hoon's death, her world has come to an end. She said those words to punish her father because she thought he was the one who ordered Sung Hoon's death.

0

She literally said "I am going to punish you by someone you cared about [Herself]" She was punishing her father because she assumed he had a hand in her fiance's death.

0

She literally said "I'm going to punish you by taking away someone you cared about". The former chairman kept her sedate to keep her from spiting him.

I never seen her as a doormat more like a chained monster. Do you remember how calm and collected she was when she woke up for the first time, tempting TY to help her. She is in no way as innocent as her appearance had led us to believe. She also skilled at mentally tormenting people even as a victim via chief lee and nurse. She is as much of the protagonist as TH.

And this is why I keep tuning in, every week. This show is freaking amazing. From the last episode, I'd started to suspect that we were going to see Yeojin's dark side, but I definitely didn't expect her to be this dark. And I love it! That I did not see this 180 transformation of her thrills me. It's about time someone gave Dojoon a taste of his own medicine. Although, I kinda prefer my revenge stories to be more Count of Monte Cristo, with the whole I shall make everything fall apart around you before coming for you. I prefer that to this whole attacking everyone and killing them. But, Yeojin did say that in her second year that if she was awoken, she would kill everyone who kept her in her prison, so I did expect some people to die. Hopefully, it won't go beyond President Go (who technically committed suicide) and the hitman (who's already dead man walking anyway). Hopefully Tae Hayun got to her and she's the one that sent the message to save Chief Lee, whilst the ambulance is to make sure that Dojoon doesn't die. Be forced into a coma and kept there like he did his sister? Most likely. But to actually kill him? I hope not. Besides, Chae Yong is most likely going to call Tae Hyun and he would be the one to operate on her husband.

A whole lot of things can happen in 4 episodes. Let the nail biting continue.

I agree.

1) YJ only wants to get rid of those who harmed her, TH and TH's sister ... Trying to stop her from murdering may annoy her but it won't make her kill them.

2) The main reason she came back to the hospital was to protect TH and his sister. She may be a crocodile but she was a mother crocodile who loves her family. She even treats TH like a "son-heir". At the church, she thought she loved him. But now I can bet that she loves TH more than anyone else including herself. It's for her to look past her revenge to discover that: to love TH more and more and to forgive her enemies.

By the way, we have a surprising development. In a sad but poignant moment when DJ didn't think of calling CY, she called and said she is family. And he savored the word as if it's too good to be true.

Dropping all pretentions and pride, both see that they are capable of forgiveness and perhaps even love. Revenge destroys and divides. But a simple and sincere apology heals and mends.

This scene is especially touching because this is the first time that CY felt his sincerity. It's possible that CY waited for DJ to secure back her identity and position or perhaps to say "goodbye" but instead she found that they only have each other. And the man she wanted to leave is the only one who would never discard her. As for him, the unexpected happened. The wife who detested him appeared at his lowest and worst time of his life.

0

@Shuerei, omo!!!! You can totally spin a good love story for DJ and CY. Dang, they look so good as a couple, right? It really helps. While I couldn't accept CY's emotional turnaround for DJ, I have never doubted DJ's love for his wife.

0

CY was always for securing her place, and she might have thought that going back to DJ could be good for her and her family. althought i must admit that the scene at the ending was kind of touching and believable as regards CY's emotions.

0

@ SS, nonski,

Probably CY isn't exactly falling for the hubby yet but she probably realized he is the only who had never used her like her dad, Pres. Go and etc. The last gesture was especially touching that his first concern was indeed for her and not his own condition.

CY and DJ substituted emptiness (lack of love) in their lives with power and position. CY is always looking for love that was so cruelly snatched away from her. DJ we know has daddy, mummy and many issues.

@ SS yes they look very good together. Loved these two actors. Any possibility of them headlining a show?

0

I think the question will up being: does she love TH more than she feels the need for revenge? She really can't have both, can she?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

What I mean is this: TH is hoping that YJ will work through her pain. He actually said he would wait for her to do so. He knows that love between them cannot survive, unless she reaches an internal resolution of her hurts---and he is very much trying to be there for her, knowing what she is going through (somewhat). And the reason he did not bring up his mother's death at the dinner scene, was because he did not want to add his pain and grief to the burden she is already trying to deal with. The whole conversation wasn't so much about Chief Lee, as it was TH reaching out, with love, to try and help YJ.

0

@Affie, Audrey

I applaud the writer for diving into the murky and dark creeks of the human soul.

Our heroine is recuperating fast physically but inside, her wound is still very raw. Added with fear, YJ is wild and dangerous since she only knows how to draw strength from feeding terror and anger.

Yes she can't have both love and revenge because TH has made that very clear to her. Love keeps no wrong. I hope the writer will bring her to a place that only perfect and unconditional love can cast out fear and overcome her grudge and hatred. When she realized that TH loved and accepted her despite being the indirect cause of his mom's death, she will see that there is a greater strength in forgiveness.

@ Audrey
I replied before seeing your additional comments. Everything you said is true. *applause*

TH is trying to reach out to her but she has waded too far into the swamp. So for now, he refrained from revealing the truth about his mom coz she is still fragile. This bombshell might wreck her emotionally. Taking her own life was a crime to herself and it started the vicious chain that caused pain to her own father and now TH.

0

DJ's way was predictable and YJ's way is more terrifying because she has learned how to rule throughout her life. Not simply killing a person but makes them suffer in exact same way. The one who wanted her dead, she'll give them death and the one who tortured her, she'll torture them. The one YP saw was the YJ who in love. Like her dead ex-BF, she's the one who treats someone she loves with all sweetness and for the one she hates, she'd show no mercy. Like how she hated her dad's way of treating her bro so she punished him.

Tae-hyun: "I forgive you your trespasses as you should forgive those who trespassed against you!"

I couldn't give up on this writer, no matter how odd (at the very least) I found some previous episodes (perseverance is the keyword, imho). It's obvious that he has brilliant ideas and endless imagination but, above all, he is able to emote. BRAVO!!
He turned the tables this week by giving us this amazing episode which put his work back to trajectory. He pushed all the right buttons and his timing was perfect. I can forgive the awkward romance for the sake of this complicated (and reversed) relationship in which none has the upper hand: One is obsessed with the enemies, hence blind and the other is deeply in love, hence (semi-)blind. AWESOME!

I think this is the first time I see so many references to the Christian faith in a kdrama. Besides the overt setting in the church, confession booth, priest and all, there are subtler ones like those you pointed out.

The theme of Vengeance and Forgiveness certainly runs through this drama.

As viewers looking in, we can see both points of view from Yeo Jin and Tae Hyun. In Yeo Jin's world, you need to get rid of your enemies before they get rid of you. There's no middle ground. It's not that Tae Hyun is naive or ignorant of the world Yeo Jin operates in. He has been a victim of an unfair system all his life because he has no power. Yet he has always found his way to live around it and survive. never selling his soul.

This reminds me of the time when YJ was deliberating whether to go with President Go or Chae Young. TH offered her an alternative which is not one of the two. I am thankful that our couple had their 'interlude' in ep 8 and 9 because I think YJ is going to remember that happiness can be found in another world, different from the one she's living in now.

Ιt's obvious this writer seeks his inspiration everywhere. He sets scenes like The Sopranos or The Godfather in which there is a long line of (much older) men who are ready to kneel and pledge allegiance in front of the new "Boss" but, at the same time, he uses symbols from both The Old and The New Testament to emphisise the conflict between revenge and forgiveness (maybe through love?). The romance, especially in a religious environment, served its own purpose but I was only able to notice that just now.
I'm so thrilled that, after Reset, the writer did live up to his previous work in terms of plot (better late than never!). It's amazing that cable channels give "birth" non-stop to new writers with talent and vision. They're probably the next pool from where the mainstream networks will have their future projects and that seems a very smart move.

Frankly I dont worry that much about DJ. He is not the most dangerous villain, his relationship with CY is improving (and kind of sweet, now that he's not acting like Bruce Almighty), and he was a good brother once too, so l hope the whole big family reunites someday.

It is painful to see sweet couple fights, but it is also endearing to know that YJ-TH feelings towards one another are actually genuine despite their differences. l hope they sort it out soon. What a relieve that chief Lee isn't killed just yet, so that there is hope for our sweet YJ-TH couple.

What I love about this drama is that the lead couple actually TALKS to each other, and really has done so since Yeo Jin has been conscious. And the Noble Idiocy has been kept to a minimum and quickly resolved (Tae Hyun's break up letter, which Yeo Jin immediately knew was because there was trouble at the hospital). Tae Hyun is especially straight forward.

The dinner scene was such a wonderful example of that -- TH told her how he felt. And, importantly, he listened to her and didn't just dismiss how she felt -- he realizes she has every right to be angry and bitter and to want justice and revenge. But he also knows that killing and ruthlessness begets more killing and ruthlessness, that there has to be another way. I don't take Tae Hyun as wanting everyone to go skipping off into the sunset hand in hand. I think he thinks justice can still be effective when the desire for vengeance is tempered with a little bit of mercy. And I love that they had this conversation like adults who respect one another.

He wasn't totally forthcoming, in that he didn't disclose the truth about his mom, but I also respect that he didn't lord it over her. And he still was happy to be with her after he found out -- so he rightfully didn't blame her, even though he might blame the system in which she exists.

Not telling her could have been a little bit of mercy on his part, right? I do think she would have felt guilty for that, even though it would obviously not be her fault. Although mostly I think it just wasn't the time to bring up such an emotionally charged issue when there are plenty of those to address already.

She was also not totally forthcoming, albeit less directly, in that she had been hiding things from him. But they are so direct and honest with each other. It's probably my favorite thing about this drama, that they are so honest with each other and really communicate. Is that boring of me? Probably. But I'm tired of bickering couples who hide even really important things from each other, and dramas that base so much of the story on the misunderstandings that ensue.

All this to say I completely agree. :)

They are great modern characters~~ I will always remember our innately good and forgiving Yong Pal; and our struggling queen of crocodiles! I say they are meant to meet and face the future together!

Thanks!

You're right that she didn't tell him about her plans first, but she wasn't lying to him about it, more like keeping him out of it, which is a little bit different. But that is splitting hairs. Anyway, we're on the same page re: the directness of their conversation after he raises the issue. I've watched WAAAY too many dramas where the entire conflict arises from the couple not talking honestly to each other as adults; too many couples where one person doesn't trust the other person enough to tell their partner the truth and allow that person to make their own choices. (I had to quit "Fated to Love You" halfway through because I hate it when the man decides that breaking his partner's heart is better than allowing her to make an informed decision for herself. Noble idiocy is the worst.) The frequency of TH and YJ's honest and mutually respectful conversations is really, really refreshing.

I agree that he was being merciful with Yeo Jin. I also think that he didn't want to use it as a trump card in that circumstance. I think he wanted her to come to the right decision without using his mom's death to guilt trip her.

For him, he thought he could buy people with money. He's nothing without his father's money. He thinks having money and influence he will be able to gain respect and love from other people esp. from his wife CY. He's the opposite of TH. TH earn respect from others through his kindness. In ep. 8, DJ said that CY ignored him in the past coz he's not the heir. He's just an illegitimate child. So he's nothing without money. In ep. 7, he asked CY if she will be able to love him now he has become the Chairman of Hanshin Group. That's the answer.
He had always been jealous of her sister who has everything she could wanted.
I would like DJ realize in the end that without wealth and influence he can still be able have what he wanted the most: Love and Family.
I want YJ in the end still be the CEO of Hanshin coz she is the only one who can change Hanshin. Smart and Fearless.

This is awesome!!! Chemistry between YP & YJ become stronger even they are in a 'fight' on dinning table.

Chief Min is the only person that we must concern, i'm curious this situation created by him, i mean how YJ know about the scar face guy? And the way Chief Min laugh when YJ gave USB in restricted area Hanshin hospital is so suspicious. Chief Min can do everything without YJ permit. Chief Min still dark and very very suspicious.

And then i hope DJ won't die, his love with CY is developing, the last scene when they talk on the phone is so sweet, for a second i'm forget about DJ's evil crime, his defeated face when talk to CY is pure love, and the way CY talk to DJ with tears in the eyes is so touching, suddenly almost cry to when see this last scene, the backsound is really support this scene too...

Hope Hanshin Big Family will reunite, and both YP & YJ also DJ & CY will have kids and have happily life together.

Yep. I agree. He asked Yj what to do about Chief lee. then Yj said something to him, and Chief lee replied "Then I'll take care of this on my own". We'll it's a double sided for the enemy since they want to get rid Chief Lee(one of the pyramid builders) and make it look like YJ is the culprit.
I guess so. I feel bad for DJ but don't forget what he did to Yj for three years, and he ordered to kill her twice, and also the son of the Daejung Group.
Maybe we'll see CY visiting DJ in the prison bar and promise to be together when he gets out. While YJ already clean up the corrupt officials in the hanshin group, imprison Chief Min, and change Hanshin as the CEo. Th will still be working in the hanshin hospital as a surgeon but still doing house calls for the gangsters. Then years have passed, they have kids visiting the graves of TH's and Yj's parents. TH's sister will surprise him about her new boyfriend. Her boyfriend is that resident who is always tagging with TH.

The writer is kinda honest person I think. He said all the things we got now from the beginning like "I'm a crocodile just like them" , "I wish I could kill people who locked me out" . See, that's all we got!
At least I can learn that forgiveness is a very expensive thing, once you forgive you'll become a very good person like Taehyun. Especially when you messed up with a powerful yet deadly woman like YJ. Honesty I've just realized that they locked YJ in a coma is purely bcs she's strong and dangerous, not bcs she's weak. And I can see how much TH loves YJ, damm I got no words to express it.
anyway, I can't imagine if YJ and TH was played by another person. They played the role perfectly. Give them awards please

TH and YJ have different personality. one is kind and one is ruthless. yet they did great in their character portrayal and so much feels by the power of love shared even differ in background and environment.

I like this kind of contrast. yet they are willing to compromise even its hard still in YJ's part.

yeah i hope they get an award for this! is the writer nominated? he did great being a newbie, huh!this is his 2nd time written drama based on his profile.. kudos!

YJ despises CY. She never had a good impression of her in the first place. Before the accident, YJ must have intuitively felt that CY was not genuine. Since she loved her brother then, she didn't want him to choose her as his wife. If YJ knew about the existence of CY's fiance(and I won't put it beyond her), can you imagine how much more she despised CY? Contrast CY to YJ, YJ was willing to give up everything to marry Sung Hoon, her 'true" love.

Earlier when deliberating over her choices, YJ didn't choose to go with CY. I think it's because YJ knows that CY's father is weak and CY wants to use him to take over Hanshin. If anything happens to DJ, CY is YJ's next-of-kin, CY can put YJ in a mental institution and use her like how DJ did. She rather take a chance with President Go because she saw the latter as just a political foe whom she can manage in the game of politics. If I am not wrong, YJ told CY straight up that she knows CY will put her in a mental institution if she had the chance.

Moreover, CY asked YJ to give TH to her and she even questioned the legitimacy of YJ and TH's marriage. And did you see how CY made a snide remark about the servants bowing for too long when she and YJ arrived back home? YJ wanted to put her into place. It's pretty much the same as how she handles the rest of the board members.

I think in YJ's eyes, CY is not family. CY betrayed her true love and married DJ because she wants power. Power which her weakling of a father can never obtain on his own. YJ sees CY as like one of the people she can either use or be used.

I agree with SS, and also, I think, right now, being on Yeo Jin's side means not being on her hit list, so Chae Young being alive more or less means Yeo Jin does acknowledge her as not an enemy per se.

And in the greater scheme of things, I think Chae Young actually didn't help Yeo Jin all that much as to garner a whole lot of gratefulness or special treatment. I mean, Chae Young would have had no compulsions about keeping Yeo Jin in a coma and ruling through her as Do Joon had done. Chae Young admitted as much, so I don't think dark Yeo Jin has much kindness to spare on her at all. Chae Young's father had also 'defected' to Do Joon's side with the grey tie and all, so I don't think Yeo Jin feels inclined to reward his, let's say, wavering loyalties, either.

All Chae Young did to help Yeo Jin was keep quiet about her being alive for less than a day, give her a make over and drive her to the funeral. I'm not sure she did more than that?? As Chae Young said, she'd only bet on the winning horse, so through Yeo Jin's and Do Joon's showdown at the funeral, Chae Young didn't interfere nor took sides, nor took any risks in favour of Yeo Jin. If Yeo Jin had lost there, Chae Young wouldn't have done much about it either, I think. She'd just turn pages and started scheming some other way of gaining power or something, but helping Yeo Jin was never her priority in any way.

So while Yeo Jin is ruthless, she also doesn't owe all that much to Chae Young either. And I think being seen as compassionate is the last thing Yeo Jin wants right now, as she's trying to rule through fear, which is not the wisest thing perhaps, but it does seem to be a modus operandi in this world (or at least for this family).

I decided to pick up Yong pal again after a drama hiatus since IRY (actually, I watched the first few episodes and haven't got time to continue) and randomly picked this episode and...well well well...I'm actually glad I chose this one! It's refreshingly funny (Tae hyun's reactions to his newly obtained status were hilarious!), I literaly woked up my the whole house with my giggles!

Yeo Jin sure is scary! The whole revenge antics is interesting, although the scene with those men queueing up to grovel to YJ seems kind of over the top (for me) at first. But then again, with their life on the line if they don't, they have no other choice, do they?

The dinner scene was...intense, yet subtle. I honestly thought (and was afraid) that TH was going to blurt about his mother right at that instant and so relieved that he didn't, although I'm pretty sure that is not going to be kept a secret from YJ for long.

But my most favorite part of this episode is the last part, with Do Joon & CY. I love the alternate expressions DJ showed, from when he was released to when he said he's sorry to his wife and agreed to go with her for a drink. I almost forgot that he's the bad guy here! Or was? I do hope he won't be killed off!

TH: I see. Hello,Director.
Dir: I've heard a lot about you. I wanted to meet you.
TH: I see.
Dir: Why don't you come to my office?
TH: Why would I...?
Dir:Why don't we have tea and share deep conversations...
TH: (giggles nervously) Why a deep conversation with me?

ROFL! :D

I also like DJ and CY together more now than they are not ridiculing each other. Lol.

Marathon-ed 5 episodes where it was left off. Wow, jaw dropping at the end of episode 14!

Yeo-Jin ordered Do Joon's hit-and-run accident? Is it Doon's turn to be put in a coma? Next episodes will be exciting!!

I hope Yeo-Jin's marriage with Tae-Hyun will last even though their love for each other seemed genuine. Unfortunately, their marriage was not consummated and that could be the reason to have it nullified.

I have a feeling that she is using Tae-Hyun's sister as the hostage. Tae-Hyun was caught off guard when Yeo-jin mentioned that she spoke with his sister.

Did you see that she really ordered it? How about Chief Min? Did you see that she really ordered to bring him to do something to him? Chief MIn asked YJ regarding Chief Lee. YJ didn't ordered Chief to do something about Chief Lee. It was Chief Min who was doing these things. Esp. that scar face guy. Wonder why does he have to die esp. now Pres. Go is dead. He's only client is chief Go. So confusing..Same with DJ, we didn't see YJ ordered to kill him. It's more suspicious coz the moment he got out from the office he got into an accident.
for me, Chief Min, CY's dad and the Chief Prosecutor we need to be concern of.
I don't believe YJ is the one giving orders to kill them. This must be a work of someone.

The dinner scene is the best I have seen in this drama and for that matter, one of the best in kdramaland.

I want to give an award to the screenplay writer. This drama has the most brilliant dialogues. I don't miss the action when I can listen to such conversations. And what makes the scene perfect is the awesome acting by Joo Won and Kim Tae Hee.

Joo Won is beyond amazing not just in intense moments but also in the quieter ones. That look on his face when he was at the door overhearing Yeo Jin's chilling remark to the board member was such a mix of emotions. No words need but we can all sense his pain and despair.

About TH Mom's issue, I knew this writer wouldn't go down the typical kdrama's 10 episodes involving noble idiocy and unnecessary angst. It pained TH tremendously but he also knows that his love for YJ will not change because of it. He chooses to bear the burden of truth himself. This is not something he would want to inflict on Yeo Jin, it's bad enough that he knows it. That's why I find his struggle to keep the truth from her and yet not to use it to stop her from exacting the revenge so painful.

This makes Tae Hyun's smiles when he walked into the dining room so agonizing to watch. I don't know how Joo Won pulled it off but my heart went out to Tae Hyun as he acknowledges Yeo Jin's efforts making the dinner and the little things she did to please him because what's he about to bring up is far from pleasant. The pain was not just from Tae Hyun but Yeo Jin's as well. As she describes her ordeal and suffering all those years, I could totally see why she cannot let it go. Kim Tae Hee was superb here, this should put paid to all her critics who say she can't act. No overacting, very controlled and yet so intense and powerful.

I could feel TH muscling all his resolve not to go soft and reach out for Yeo Jin as much as he wanted to. He had to be resolute in his request. I could also feel Yeo Jin restraining herself from stopping TH when he stood up and walked away. She wasn't ready to give in, just yet.

Yes indeed. The dinner scene was excellent from writer Jang Hyeok-Rin's words to the awesome acting by Joo Won and Kim Tae Hee. The give and take in relationships — in this case a romantic one; the dinner scene provided a lesson on so many levels. Intentional communication, listening to understand, giving your partner the space to save face, an awareness of not taking things personally, and looking at things from your partner’s perspective as well as your own, etc.

Cy's dad is the reason why Cy's bf's business went bankrupt and committed suicide.. hE did that just to make her daughter marry DJ and probably planning to make her the chairman's wife.

I agree. It might be possible if that usb from her father is not a secret acct book. I think that's the list of people who are deem by the YJ's father as suspicious. I don't think the father really has the secret act book. If I were the father, I would not give the secret acct book to my children. Why would i? since that secret acct book will only put my children in danger and causes YJ and DJ fighting over it. It already clear that the YJ is the heir since it is from her mother. Do you think her position as an heiress will still be safe if people from outside will know that she has that secret acct book. They know that's the only key to become hanshin CEo and control it. The Chief Prosecutor is suspicious as if he knows that there is real secret acct book. The face he made after DJ said about YJ's shares in the company. And after that he made a call to her.
I just hope that there is no secret acct book/ slush fund.
What contains in the usb are the names of the people in hanshin or outside the hanshin that YJ needs to be aware and protect herself from them.
After learning about YJ's father operation it made me aware that not only DJ and Pres. Go are the enemies here. I think there's still more.
For now, I am suspicious of Chief Min, Cy's dad and Chief Prosecutor.
I am so excited for the next episode.

Before this drama ends, I want to clear up any misunderstandings that TH made up by himself from the start of the drama. I want the hospital staffs, residents, and the doctors recognize TH as a good person. Everyone in the hospital thinks of him as a money bug, and a person who truly loves Young Ae.
Maybe something will happen to Young Ae and Th protected her from the car or bullet, then he will be in critical condition. People will know that he sacrifice his life for Young Ae. Means he really loves her. Then they realize he misunderstood him and shunned him.
Th's underground friends will know about this and will find those culprit who hurt TH. (The culprits are those people who buried scar face guy alive.)

yeah, I'd like some closure with his dad, too, though I'm not sure there's much to be done about that relationship.

As for Tae Hyun asking Yeo Jin to forgive her enemies when he can't forgive his dad, it's kind of different. I think when Tae Hyun asks Yeo Jin to forgive her enemies, he means to stop murdering people. It's not as much forgiveness but about stopping the revenge, letting go of the anger and sparing people's lives, finding other ways to bring these people to justice. Tae Hyun does have a complicated relationship with his dad, doesn't like him too much and maybe can't forgive him either, but he isn't trying to get revenge on his dad nor murder him for whatever reason, so what Tae Hyun's asking of Yeo Jin is not that weird.

I am perfectly alright if Tae Hyun doesn't do a 360 turn and become a filial son. Perhaps he can dial down his animosity and harsh words every time he sees his old man.

In Good Doctor, Joo Won's character had a terrible dad, worse than this one. I was so glad that they didn't show them hugging and making up even though he knew his dad was at death's door.

Not everything needs to be tied up neatly at the end of the drama, certainly not this type.

Frankly, I agree with everything YeoJin has said. That is the real world which most ppl dun see. That is also why TaeHyun is too naive and trusting for his won good. Chief Lee made the decision he made to have the power and riches he wanted, why should he not be punished for it? If TH is not the chairwoman's husband, would he have apologised for letting his mom die? Obviously not. He made his decisions with clarity, knowing exactly what he was doing was murder and still trusted that he could get away with it based on the power Han DoJoon had.

If ChaeYeon's dad can give his daughter to a man like DoJoon for power and riches, how is he better than the rest? It goes to show all of them are the same, hankering after power and riches and willing to do anything to preserve their own good lives. In this case, YeoJin has it exactly right. That they are a bunch of crocodiles and she is the queen of crocodiles now. It totally made sense that she has to instill so much fear in them so things she went thru will not happen again. If she were to ask TaeHyun "Would you want your sister to die if we are taken down?" I bet he will think more carefully instead of just asking her to stop.

I absolutely Agree. There are enemies from the shadows that they don't know who they are but there might be possibility that are close to them and will stab them from behind.
Chief lee deserves to die but not by YJ's hands. I don't agree that he is just only a puppet that he is following orders. Seriously let's compare him to TH. Th's situation is very much worse than him. He needs money to pay for his sister's treatment, money to pay for his students loans and to the loan sharks who keeps harassing him. He needs that money he will be receiving from Dir. Go if he brings YJ to him dead or alive. He is just only a puppet. and he really needs that money. So he is the same with Chief lee who will do everything for money but what makes them different is conscience. There's still humanity left in TH, and kindness that sets Chief LEE and TH apart. If i remmber Chief lee was similar to TH in the past. So the question is did TH did the same thing Chief lee did to YJ? No..just like what TH said to YJ "there's a different way." so there's a different way so why does chief lee keeps doing it to Yj? being drugged for 3 yrs, slit her throat and left her to die in the OR> so why?? that's because money and status. he wants that. he knows what he wants .that's why DJ was able to persuade that chief lee and dir. of hospital to kill YJ in exchange of money.
I would like YJ to make those people who experience her pain suffer but I don't agree killing them. Revenge is like a cycle. I don't care about coz they started it. so why would i restrain myself when i know that they would only do it again. They are not punishable by law coz of money and no evidence. Do you think she can lseep peacefully at night and have kids with TH if they are still around somewhere plotting against them? No.
What i care the most is what she is doing would only backfire.. she's a victim but she's turning herself into a suspect. no one would symphatize her excpt TH. People will only said leave it to the legal system. but can they? thse people are protected by law. so how?
I just hope that it would not backfire him. Chief lee would be best to stand as a witness but he's mentally unstable right now , and besides there are enemies that we don't know wanted to kill him.and DJ.maybe to look like YJ as a suspect.

@shirayukihime. This! I agree with everything you said.

Chief Lee deserves all the revenge YJ can dish out cos he was a willing accomplice with no clear cut overriding reason for his greedy desire for power and money, unlike Yong Pal's need to pay off his loans and treat his sister.

If YJ avenges by killing them... She's stooping to their level but I also agree with @Alexis that Tae Hyun should really not take the matter so lightly becos all their lives are still in danger. That chaebol living is not all sun and sweet kisses!

I think there is a chance for YJ to carry out all her revenge... In various ways... Including murder if either Do Joon or Chae Young tries to hurt her or TH again. Then she can really go at them and have provocation and self-defense as her defences at law.

I don't think Tae Hyun is taking it lightly. I think he just didn't want Yeo Jin to ruin herself and let revenge consume her. I feel that he knows their lives will forever be in danger (given their wealth and status now), but he's hoping there would be a better alternative to secure all those and their safety, most importantly, other than endless revenge and killings.

p.s. For me, I think that our OTP shines the most during intense scenes together (first meeting at the OR, cellphone incident at the 'throne' room and now this dinner scene) more so than the lovey dovey ones. Although I find the previous episode's kitchen scene to be lovely.

I have always found their romantic scenes absolutely lovely. I think it's not so much of the romance being less but rather the intensity and emotional overdrives in other scenes make the romance pale in comparison.

As many have already pointed out that we finally have a kdrama couple who talked to each other, I also find our OTP relatable because they are mature and sensible. Maybe not everyone's idea of a fluffy, feel good k-romance but a lot more realistic than most.

Yup! That's what I feel too @SS. Did it not sound like that? Haha! But what you said was what I'm trying to describe though.

I love their conversations and that they are at least honest to each other and not trying to place the other in the dark in the guise of trying to protect the other. I wonder though how Yeo Jin will know about Tae Hyun's mom's incident. I wish it would come from Tae Hyun and not from any other person.

0

I think Tae Hyun will try his hardest not to tell her. It's got nothing to do with noble idiocy. It's just one of those things where people are better off not knowing. Tae Hyun loves her too much for it.

Arrgh...I can't imagine the angst and pain these two will have to go through. Joo Won and KTH are doing such a marvelous job. My heart was in the throat throughout the dinner scene.

“Would you want your sister to die if we are taken down?”

Yes, YJ should ask TH this. TH is not very naive, but.. he may not fully understand what is happening, esp when involving company politic matters. It is not that easy. I actually see that YJ was disappointed when TH seems not to believe her, and he seems to believe that YJ order all the killings. Maybe the only thing that YJ needs now is TH's trust. Probably if TH didn't jump to the statement asking YJ not to touch Chief Lee and looks like pointing out at YJ. He should be in doubt, but the way he asked, looks like he already confirmed it. YJ, even she is Queen of Crocodile who ready to eat all her victims, she is actually very lonely in her fight.

But TH also not at fault. He has every right to believe it was true, since he saw with his own eyes when the directors begging YJ. He saw how scary YJ is. He must be in shocked, and when YJ mentioned about his sister, TH seems to be shocked and in my eyes, he was in doubt with YJ. Most probably, he was doubting about YJ's sincerity.

But i will support YJ for her vengeance, but not to the extent to murder ppl.

I was reading somewhere about a funny excerpt but it makes sense - Yeo Jin is like Anakin Skywalker; she is moving to the dark side.
I sympathise with her, but forgiveness does not come easily to any person. Especially if you are kept like a sleeping beauty for 3 years who has a soul but caged till eternity. Neverthless, if there is someone who can accept one for their flaws and ready to live with them for what they are, then I truly hope Yeo Jin can learn to forgive. If Tae Hyun could break many medical codes and practices yet could get scott free from the hands of Det. Lee, then I am sure this should make Yeo Jin realise that she has got a keeper.

Now that you mentioned Star Wars, I think it had the ingredients of a kdrama makjang.

birth secrets - "I Am Your Father!"
revenge
incestous possibility
empires at war
power struggles
ugly villains eg. Jabba the Hutt

Will YJ be able to have both TH and Hanshin? Will she still be a CEo of hanshin and a wife to TH?
Most of the female heiress in the kdramas I have watched has to choose between love and their wealth. They can only choose one and give up the other. While the male lead who is rich and handsome in the end of the drama they could have what they wanted. They were able to protect their love and their wealth at the same time.
I am expecting a happy ending where YJ will be able to reclaim her throne and keep TH. She will be able to have both. Wealth and Love.

In this drama, you really cannot dismiss or not pay attention to what's said.

For years, I have been watching kdramas without the need to fully engage my brain. I mean most of us watch dramas to unwind and for entertainment. That's why I am able to enjoy dramas like YFAS because I could just put aside my need for logic and enjoy the fun, no matter how crazy or ridiculous things went.

I went into Yong Pal with the same approach but soon I realized that this is not THE kind of drama you can watch without focusing your mind on it. If things don't seem to make sense, it's more likely you have missed a point, have misconception how things work or it's something that is going to be revealed as the plot progresses.

Remember how most misunderstood and even laugh at Yeo Jin for calling herself a crocodile in ep 8? Well, it's very clear now, isn't it?

Yong Pal is demanding more from me compared to other dramas. I hate to admit I spent the rest of the week thinking and discussing on YP forums, all the possibilities, scenarios and theories. Yet, I still end up being surprised by the writer in the next episode. I already think highly of this writer thus far. Having to bow to demands of an extension so late is unfair to him. So, if he pulls it off, I will be totally in awe. If he doesn't, I will still think he's outstanding.

I am wondering if the writer wants to mislead us to think YJ really kills.

When YJ said "kill them all" did she mean it figuratively or literally? How many of us confess to use the word "kill" loosely? Like "I'll kill you if you tell this to Jane!" "I'll kill my boss if he doesn't give me my raise!"

Could YJ really mean punishing her enemies but not actually killing them?

It's still not that clear if she ordered or indirectly let Secretary Min kill Scarface and was the one who sent President Go the note.

Yeo Jin may not have wanted Chief Lee to die, I think she wanted to cut him up, sew him back and eventually lock him up in a mental asylum. Same for DJ, assuming it was YJ who sent the man, he didn't deal DJ with a fatal blow. My guess is that YJ wants DJ to be put in a coma like she did.

All these punishments are terrible of course but at least she's not a murderer.

@ SS
There's even a possibility that Pres go and scarface are still alive but kept somewhere....

In this show if there's no dead body lying in the coffin for days, we would never know.

Regardless, if alive, pres go and scarface are bound to go after YJ and TH again.... Scarface is like a terminator. Relentless robotic killer.

I don't agree with killing but how does one stop a cyborg or cyborg master like that? Let's hope they are still alive and get punished by the legal system.

Yeah, I considered that possibility too.

Scarface was scary. He's so quick, silent and deadly with his knife. Did you noticed that in ep 12 when Scarface tried to kill TH, he dropped his knife early in the scuffle. If he didn't drop it, I think TH won't be alive. This is what I like about this drama, it's really detailed if you bother to watch with your eyes and ears peeled.

@ SS
1) Good and quick eye work. I was too tensed to notice anything during the chase coz poor TH is not a 7th level agent. Yes he almost killed TH. So I am not surprised that YJ would be relieved that he is buried somewhere.

I agree she didn't direct orders for killing but it looks like she expected Sec Kim to read her mind. Silence them, or whatever it takes. But I am surprised Sec Kim personally oversee the scarface burial. Either he wanna make sure terminator is truly dead and won't come after him. Or he might dig him out later for some purposes.

2) My assumption is that daesung group is behind president Go's schemes. The reason is that both were rival groups and how is it possible they can let go of SH's accidental death?

This episode does strongly suggest she was involved in president Go's death to some degree unless she also kept him alive after his attempted suicide. She needed to orchestra the supposed/actual death to strike fear and sniff out the other betrayers.

3) CY's dad. He does seem very meek but it does contradict the character of a person who can make someone bankrupt. I'd say he is not so smart though since he couldn't figure out the daughter was a target.

4) Yes if she doesn't have murderous intent, YJ most certainly want chief lee in asylum / the guy is practically halfway there by now anyway. And she will deal the same fate to do joon. Lock them up somewhere.

She actual admit to directing the killings by saying "i regret not killing them with my own hands." She basically said I had someone do it for me. However, I do wish it weren't true. I also have to remember she is her brother's sister.

While I know this is "just" a drama and that in the dramaverse each opinion and idea stated is valid and warranted by a person's individual reaction to a given drama, I still have to state that I have a problem with some of the comments expressed here and in previous episodes. To whit, the following: (the light and fluffy first) how do folks postulate an ending where the potential kids of the paired couples end up playing together in a foreseeable future?; that would be asking for quite a lot, involving a time-lapse trope that most of us claim to rue, if not despise. More importantly though: I remember all these people wanting to see Yeo Jin go all hard-ass and kick-ass, vengeful bad-ass to the max---well, you are getting that people and I really wonder if this is really what you wanted? I'm looking at the whole story arc and the longer Yeo Jin stays in this mode, the less likelihood for any kind of happy ending to this drama at all. There has to be some sort of realistic redemption/reconciliation exposition in this story to take the story from revenge mode to something more hopeful. I'm going to be very intrigued to see how the writers manage this, and as Matt said, it's a very good thing that the writers have 4 more episodes in which to handle this transition.

Awesome, Audrey! I can't agree more.

I am hoping for more than just a happy ending, I want to see how the writer address and resolve these issues of revenge and forgiveness. There are numerous revenge dramas out there but none has made me ponder over them as much as this one. I think it's because most revenge dramas never felt real. YJ's story is not less dramatic but instead of focusing on just two opposing characters and depending on unrealistic tropes, the writer introduced some thought provoking dilemmas and have the characters at various crossroads where they face choices.

The last paragraph, reminded me of amy from gone girl but I dont think that yeojin is as psychotic as Amy is and well, well Dojoon and yeojin are two peas in a pod after all, except that yeojin is more cunning and smarter I guess. I like how ruthless she became and I'm all for "I'm gonna kill you all" revenge (have always support that 100%) but gotta agree with taehyun here, he is right. Yeojin also made an unnecessary enemy:CHAEYONG,she should have kept chaeyong by her side and make her an ally but nooooo. I understand that she doesn't trust her and we don't know what happened in the past, also chaeyong holds grudges against the family+seems to have her own agenda but yeojin just made it worse!!
Btw cant believe I'm saying this but I kinda pity dojoon like just a little bit

My last comment dealt more with plot, now I feel the need to deal with "character": I love that people are delving into this drama, expressing thoughts and ideas about the characters and their possible motivations and actions. I truly enjoy the level of involvement that we are experiencing with this drama, that the writers have so drawn us into a complex and unpredictable story line. What we as drama fans want is to experience the internal logic of a story in its plot and character development; if we don't get that, we rail against the writers for lazy writing and feel betrayed for all the time we invested. Having said that, I don't get the feeling that this drama will betray us; I feel that the writers are smart and know where they are headed, with confidence. There are many threads of plot and character out there that will keep this story spinning in many different directions: like the future roles of the Chief Prosecutor, Detective Lee, the gangster Do Chul and his boys, what happens with Chief Lee, and DJ and CH, to mention only a few character and plot trajectories. And, I haven't, by any means, forgotten about Secretary Min: is he the power behind the throne perhaps, the villain behind the curtains, is he using YJ, to discard her when he finds someone else to use? So many possibilities...
And have to add one last thing for right now: while YJ cannot possibly be described as a "saint", neither can TY; while is is a "good person" (and I am with him 150%), he has collaborated with gangsters to evade the law, for money. He is not blameless; actually, most of the people in this drama carry a burden of guilt and wrong, whatever their motivations or reasons, or such that we impute to them. There are a lot of flawed individuals in this drama and I anxiously await to see how all of the plot and character arc play out. To me, this is the unraveling of a very good drama.
