Retro bobs and mom jeans for Answer Me 1988

It’s about time! We finally have a look at the cast of the highly anticipated friendship-romance-nostalgia drama Answer Me 1988, or at least some of the cast, with these stills featuring three of the ladies of the bunch. They are: leading lady Hyeri (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) and her two buddies, played by Lee Min-ji (Seonam Girls High School Investigators) and comedian Lee Se-young (SNL Korea), all in high school and all rocking delightfully frumpy ’80s fashions.

You’ve gotta give it to the Answer Me franchise: They go all-out with the hairstyles and clothing of their throwback eras, opting for realistic (thus often amusingly tacky) looks rather than hipper, more flattering re-creations of the past. What I particularly love about the above shot is that if you don’t look closely at their faces, it kind of looks like we’ve just got three Shim Eun-kyungs. Hee. It’s Sunny times three.

The pictures below feature Hyeri solo, and while I’m still a little nervous about how her acting will fare, I always enjoy when actors go for character over looking pretty, and I trust the writer to bring out quirky, comedic traits in everyone. For instance: Is that rice stuck to her face? That’s a nice touch.

I hope this means the boys are next up (and soon), because I can’t wait to see Go Kyung-pyo and Park Bo-gum sporting acid wash and hi-tops. Maybe paired with high waists and Members Only jackets, topped off (literally!) with some gloriously feathered hair. Let’s put aside the fact that none of the main cast were even born till the ’90s, shall we? I… don’t even want to think about that.

Answer Me 1988 follows current Friday-Saturday drama Twenty Again on tvN, and premieres in October.

The first picture, the one in the middle, reminds me of the same kind of outfit Shim Eun Kyung worn in Sunny.

" I always enjoy when actors go for character over looking pretty...."

I think almost all K-dramas have this as the female leads are always dressed and styled in a way that they look over-the-top ordinary and plain..not to mention the hairstyles they are given to hide every inch of their attractive features (and I get annoyed by it most of the times)..

Except in melodramas where they get to sport some make-up and graceful attire.

I get annoyed too. They seem to have a formula:

Short hair (straight or frizzy ahjumma curly) + bad styling = quirky character, cop, or ordinary and plain. In melodramas, they may have make-up and graceful attire as you say, but they're the villain or secondary characters.

Long hair + pretty = candy girl.

How refreshing would it be to have beauty and character in one person? It's no wonder characters like Cheon Song-Yi (My Love from the Star) and Jang Hye-Sung (I Can Hear Your Voice) are more interesting than most.

Actresses score a lot of points with me when I see them give up trying to look pretty all the time and just go for realism and what the character should look like in that situation. So many actresses (particularly idol-actresses) put their celebrity image above their character image. It just tells me that they don't really taking acting that seriously.

I take it that you also rejoice when male actors make an effort to tone down their handsomeness, and come off as plain and badly dressed?

If the scene calls for it, sure.

I don't disagree with you; I'm all for actors giving up the "pretty" for character. What gets tiresome are repetitive formulas that create candy girl vs plain girl vs villain girl stereotypes.

Can't wait! Especially Go Kyung-pyo. Loved him in Flower Boy Next Door and then Tomorrow Cantabile. He does dorky and cute so well.

ASA! I'm glad I'm seeing this on time.
There's so much probability that It'll turn out to hit the so-to-say must-see dramas.

nope. Precious Johnson got it wrong. JB just said Hyeri and friends' styles are similar to Shim Eun Kyung's in "Sunny" the movie.

Javabeans, this looks really promising. Hyeri and Lee Min-ji both worked together at Seonam Girls HS Detectives set inside a school. Ha, so they will collaborate as students again. Amazing, amazing. Looks like I am willing to watch this for the same vibe I've had in When Harry Met Sally lol.

Gonna re-watch Sunny right now. Between this article and just finished watching Min Hyo Rin in Triple, I suddenly missed the cast of Sunny.

You take the director and writer too lightly. As JB said, they know how to make their cast go for character over looking pretty. I watched Reply 1997 and thought Hoya's acting was so good but then I watched Mask, and cringed at him. Before watching Reply 1994, I always thought Go Ara was just a meh (because, SM actors) but she pull it off as Najung.

The key is in the director and of course, writer.

As bad as they are with their acting, the director and writer deserve huge props for masking their horrible skills. I'm confident that they can pull it off with Hyeri as well. She was terrible and cringeworthy to the max in Hyde. I hope the miracle of Reply will make her at least bearable.

I really like Hyeri's variety persona and I hope AM will do for her what it did for Go Ara

I have this unpopular opinion that both Eunji & Go Ara can't act but they have this great director who just know how to make it work. Suspect he will work the same magic with Hyeri as well, so bring it on..

This already looks like gold, oh my goodness. I still actually haven't seen Answer Me 1994, but 1997 is one of my favorite dramas and I just love the concept of the series. SO looking forward to this!

I think Lee Min-ji only the one (so far) who born before '90s. She's a '86-er. She also got teased for her age in that Seonam's High School drama. HA. I wonder the Reply will get that pointed for her on that too. That will be amusing.

I never finished 1994 because of the loooonnngggg episodes even though I really liked it and loved the characters (Chilbongie!). (I will finish it one day, I hope, though now I realize it's been two years since that one, eep!)

I really want to watch this, as long as the editing team does its job and, you know, actually edits it. It better not be an hour and a half...too long....grad school...teaching exams....future planning...no time...

I am trying hard not to concentrate on Hyeri's silicone forehead, but it is just looks creepy as hell. Say what you want about Eunji's or Ara's acting (which is far from perfect), but at least they nailed the natural, girl-next-door look. Hyeri just looks like a walking scientific experiment.

She does not. Some of you people need to stop making such personal and nasty comments about her. So unnecessary.

Seriously. And making PS jabs? Really? It's the K-entertainment industry, everyone and their mother has had work done... why single out one person for what most other idols and actors have done as well?

Not to mention the fact that I see nothing wrong with her forehead...

I work in PS industry, I am not against cosmetic surgery, I am against bad work that makes people look like humanoid aliens. If you can't see a contouring lump on her forehead - good for you. I can't unsee it and have a right to think that she is not suitable for the role because she looks nothing like a Korean woman in 1980's.

what are you even trying to say at this point...wtf like there's only one type of face that women in the 1980's had...she has the bob haircut, the clothes, and here you are claiming like she doesn't look like a Korean woman in the 1980's...right cause actresses who play saguek's totally look like they're from that era. and her forehead looks fine, stop being so rude.

Lord, make an intervention and make this work for Hyeri. I'm not a fan of her idol side nor her actor side, but I'm a fan of the Answer Me franchise so, I'm hoping this works. It worked for Eunji and Ara so who knows? I'm just tired of idols who can't bring a good thing to the table. (e.g. Na Eun in Twenty Again right now...) Good luck 1988!!
