Helloo....
No news on the blog cause I cannot log in! It seems I chose the wrong provider.
I turned in my stories and now I am like: "WAI-IIIT! Sto-oop! Give it back, no burn it! I wanna steal it back, I am so embarrassed..." Biting my nails and the results won´t be known till 15.12
and I am worried, cause the characters are my children - people always ask, why don´t you have children? Like, if I don´t I am not a full person to them.
And I say: have you tried carrying a character inside of you for 10 years? Not only do you carry them, you raise them, yet they still haven´t been born. And once they do, it is the same as with raising kids. They get tempers, they are full of surprises, and sometimes they sleep all day. And just like teenagers, they always do the opposite of what you expect, and then you send them out into the world and worry that they´ll be ruined by it... pick up awful traits etc. so think twice before saying I don´t know what it means to raise "children". They could come back better than before though.
arrghhh going crazy.
I want to marathon Scholar now - I just didn´t have the time for more than the "Gwi moments" compiled on Youtube and they got better and better. the alien elf did a great job, but now I really want him to get an "everyguy" role.
Question today: what is the most stressful school in korean dramas, where you would never send your children to? is stressful environment ever good for people, does it make us put in more effort or does it take away any motivation we had (I guess different people, different ability to deal with it)?
school stress and depression is a big issue here in my country. Our children are the most depressed, loneliest and insecure in Europe

Most stressful school in korean dramas? Actually my own was the worst stress-wise. I went to school in Korea all the way up to university, and had dream that I was studying for university exam for about good 10 years even after I started to work.

Just about every school story in kdrama I wouldn't dream about sending my kids to. Not only about the academic load, but also the unfriendly friendship environment they have to deal with in the story. My kids are homeschooled, but I also have a very solid community in which they belong to make friends and be a part in...so I'm really grateful of that...
I'm sorry to hear about your story and the school children situation in your country...
I understand what you mean about characters in your story, though. I used to write too (haven't spent enough time thinking to have any characters telling me about their stories lately, though...). I agree, characters most often have minds of their own...

Hi superfox,
Stressful schools, or stressful families and society, or ultimately both? I just remember in Monstar, School 2013, Heirs, and Teacher Biscuit Star Candy there were either suicide attempts or an actual suicide by students. (Remember the brother behind the locked door - I can remember which one that was in, School 2013 I think?) The pressure is tremendous and the lack of acceptable and creative options is daunting. Sigh.
Gwi and regular guy moments - he was pretty good in King of Savvy and of course, White Christmas.
have a great weekend!

If nothing else, it is one reason why Korea has the highest suicide rate in the world.

As an aspiring writer, I can totally relate to characters being almost like children (no matter what type of character they are). You pretty much "raise" them in a sense until the time comes to let other people judge them. Best of luck to you!
On another note, alien elf is the best descriptor ever (He could totally pull off being a elf from Middle Earth. He's pretty enough for it.) I want to see LSH in more things!
To answer your question, I think stressful environments (to an extent) can be good for motivation. I've seen too many people my age take school too lightly and only realize their mistake afterwards. On the flip side, too much stress can mess people up for life. There really needs to be a balance.

Happy Friday beanies!
I'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I handed in my dissertation and spent all of yesterday watching supernatural <3
Today have been spent packing and trying to figure out where all this stuff came from. Will need to borrow space from my friends to store some books untill I come back for graduation though. (seriously how does drama people do this whole "gone for a year with one tiny suitcase thing?)
Had a rewatch of school 2013. But otherwie I still need to catch up. Thinking about starting with I remember you or Healer.

Oh wow, you're done! Yay!! *clapping*
Yeah, I don't know how people do the tiny suitcase thing either. Especially if you wear big shoes. If you put those in the suitcase they take up the whole thing!
What you did in school was nothing. Now it's time for the big decisions: "What drama do I want to watch first?" ..... *laughing*
I'm kidding, of course. :) ....... Both of the ones you mentioned are great.

I mean it's the biggest clue that they never went anywhere! because that tiny suitcase does not hold everything! Which is also why I appreciated hana kimi where she comes with 1 suitcase and then have a delivery of a bunch of boxes. Much more believable!
Haha, Yeah it's either contemplate "what drama do I watch?" or contemplate "how to find a ob" but the last one feels too depressing. I need to recover from post-dissertation exhaustion and illness first ;)

sigh i remember feeling elated after completing my grad studies and looking forward to working, and now a year down the line in a job i'd do anything to go back... gimme a dissertation at the end of the year over the stress of needing to perform everyday, any day... i hate growing up. i want to be a student again T_T
but on a happier note, i started watching Once Upon a Time in Saeng Chori after it came up in Name That Drama this time, (there's nothing airing at present that held my interest save for 20 again & The Genius), and it's definitely got me hooked. It's funny and creepy and bizarre at the same time and I have no idea what to make of it, but I definitely recommend it if you're looking for something to watch :D

Last ends this weekend. I will miss the show. Lee BumSoo said he was so happy while filming Last- Atmosphere was great and everyone was like family.
Choi JiWoo and Lee SangWoo of Twenty Again showed up in highschool uniform and
carried out their ratings promise- serving coffee.
Each of them promised to serve ratings times 100 cups of coffee, if ratings goes over 3%. It passed it in first episode, and they continued to carry out their promises with higher ratings. They look so cute.
There was Seoul Drama awards ceremony, which was created to promote Korean dramas to the world (and introduces dramas of other countries to Korea).

And why Kim Taehee is on the list? I haven't watched it but is she really that good in there? o_O
Haven't watched KMHM either but based on people's comment, i really wish Ji Sung gets it.

I find KTH decent starting from My Princess onwards just because the OTP is adorbs... considering how bad they are before. But then... in Yongpal LOL.
Thankfully, i can understand her nominations. She can act. Guess it's a late bloomer stuff.
I cannot really understand UEE though. I find her decent at first then i was like she's pretty much the same in every drama...
I was skimming for PBG name too... and end up being so disappointed but yay for the IRY nods! I doubt they can win in KBS drama awards so it's good to see them somewhere here.

Oh to KTH defense. The later eps in Yongpal. Particularly 11 and 12. It shows that she can act if she's not sleeping or being suck into such bewildering romance that comes out of nowhere.

Too bad i dropped My Princess, too fluffy and romance-y for my liking ._.
What confuse me is that Yongpal get nomination while still airing so it makes me curious haha
Haven't watched anything Uee in it actually, can't say anything about her.
I wish them get the Best Writing, altho Misaeng is really a strong contender. Meanwhile, PBG and Do Kyungsoo really deserve all the rookie nomination there is in the world of drama awards. I'm blinded by my love for IRY but whatever, they are still great XD

Yoo DongGeun could be the winner concidering seniority plus ratings and that should also be a clever Solomonic solution to this complicated category.
I'm curious, too, where is Punch?? Kim RaeWon and Jo JaeHyun gave wonderful performances, far above the usual "good" ones we sometimes see in dramas. The Committee overlooked very good projects (who knows why!)and I do hope the rest of the shows you mentioned have a chance next year.

Not a big fan of the Punch overall plotting, but the first episodes were much better written than, say, "Yong Pal".
I'd also say that Park Hyuk-Kwon and especially Kim A-joong did better jobs than Park Hae-jin, Park Yoo-chun and Park Shin-hye, Kim Tae-hee respectively.

I doubt these particular awards are based on merit. It's a weird combination of ratings and "keeping-the-audience-happy" criteria with the exception of Remember You. Though I attribute that on KBS' demur to nominate Assembly. I guess they're saving it for the network awards. And SBS will probably do the same with Punch and Heard it. The only positive was the recognition at last of Maids, even though I know it was due to its great ratings.

Excellent choices on the actor categories. I could name a few more that "grow more in each role elevating from D- to D" but I'm scared of their "fan-base". I disagree on Yong Pal. He's Reset's writer for the first time working on a major network. Cut him some slack, he's bound to make some compromises.

Hello beanies, long time no open thread,i can thank the drama draught going on,ever since I REMEMBER YOU and MY GHOSTESS ended, there's nothing eye-catching, maybe TWENTY AGAIN but its not like i anticipate new episodes, frankly i forget about it till i recieve a notification on my phone when a new episode is out.But ive been keeping myself busy watching IT'S OKAY THAT'S LOVE twice last week plus i found this great account on instagram that has BTS of the drama that are not on YouTube and every interview Jo in sung and Gong hyo jin have done, so basically a small heaven.i may love the drama more than i did the first time around, which makes me realise if anyone i know says they didn't like it, i can't be friends with you and if were dating, I'd dump you.Maybe it sounds crazy ? but I feel like if you don't GET IT, we dont click, you don't get me.just like guys who believe STAR WARS is the truth and anyone who says otherwise should be banished.
Drama moment
So my mum's visiting and she always complaining about me constantly watching kdramas, so i put SENSE 8 for her to watch,we had fun at first pointing out all the places she recognises in Kenya minus me forwarding every R rated scenes (akward much) she was starting to follow till the scenes with the births ? she was so horrified /grossed out that she said she rather watch a Korean drama YAY ?
I put OH MY GHOSTESS and she loved it,of course the subs are too fast for her, so i have to tell her what Bong sun is saying and there was this horrible moment where i was contemplating whether i need a drama buddy that bad.
Picture this, telling your Mum, Bong sun says Chef, let's do it once, only once, chef, think of it as giving me a gift, cheeef????
So just imagine what i was going through all the episodes she's begging, hinting and touching.
I was happy she was enjoying a drama finally but ???.
I have to stop typing, i will be back.
Forgive any grammatical errors, no time to check.

Hi Everyone and Happy Weekend!
Thank you everyone who's been responding to my questions/polls on the Open Thread in the last 2-3 weeks. I loved reading you and you gave me more ideas and questions. This is a follow-up series of questions which are partially based on your answers/general comments. Please feel free, whether or not you've ever responded to me, to give your take on the following.
I'm asking out of personal curiosity and interest and I'm always very interested to read what you think and feel. :) (My answers are in a separate post)
Please fill in the blanks ( _ _ _ ) or select an answer.
1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because ...
a) of the actor(s)
b) writer/director
c) preview and/or the story is the kind I like
d) combination of _ _ _
e) my own reasons like _ _ _
2) I usually drop a series ...
a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes because _ _ _
b) towards the middle even after the first few episodes disappointed me because _ _ _
c) Not applicable because I don't drop any show I start.
3) If you answered 2a) and 2b) please name a few of the shows you dropped. (Or, OK if you've got a very long list, by all means list them all LOL!). You can also say why if you don't mind repeating
yourself from previous OTs.
4) Although a show is disappointing ...
a) I may not/don't drop it because _ _ _
b) Not applicable ... I will definitely drop it.
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again ...
a) I'm glad I did not give up the following shows because _ _ _
b) Not applicable ... I was not glad!!!
c) Not applicable ... I do not ever go back to something I dropped.
6a) I have a background in dramas/movies/theatre (as in study(ied) it, act(ed), write/wrote, involved in production behind the scenes/backstage...)
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre
Thank you! :)

1c) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because I think it will be a good story. It hardly matters to me who is acting in it, although I may have reservations if some actors/actresses I already know I do not like are in it. But I will give it a chance for the story at least.
2b) I usually drop a series towards the middle even after the first few episodes disappointed me because I would like a show to have more time to redeem itself. The exception would be shows that
got me angry or bored from very early on.
3) I'm only remembering the recent ones... I dropped High Society - I could not understand the characters well enough to care, Warm and Cozy - too much blow hot/cold so that I did not care
anymore, TTILY - too much PPL, characters too annoying and it was just wasting time, Blood - need I
say anything?, Orange Marmalade - it wasn't half bad but I ran out of time, Masked Prosecutor - ran
out of time and the bad guys and revenge arc were somehow not compelling.
4a) Although a show is disappointing, I may not/don't drop it because 1 or 2 things kept me interested enough or I was fascinated by the trainwreck or I really wanted to hope in it til the end.
5a) I'm glad I did not give up the following shows because: Ex-Girlfriend's Club turned out better than I feared. It was funny and ultimately heartwarming and worth the watch.
As for Mask, I watched for the OTP ... well it was a sweet romance and the chemistry was great, although the writing shift was unfortunate.
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre.
How about you?

1)e: my first impression on first couple of episodes
2)a: something piss me off. But it is rare that I drop a drama. I might stop, but go back and finish it.
3) Super daddy Yeol (but I watched the last ep), Blood (but I am going to go back)
4) a: I just want to finish it because you never know, you might like one of two scenes.
5) a: I loved it - marriage not dating, ex-girl friends' club.
6b) No background. Worked with computer all my life. But my hubby always teases me that I should have worked in the drama area.

Thank you @fan
Wow! I applaud you for being determined to go back to watch Blood. I FFD to catch the end, but won't spoil it for you if you don't know what happened.
In a way, although I do not complete every show, I'm similar in that I feel "you never know, you might like one of two scenes"... well for me it's not just a few scenes that I hope I'll like... it's the hope that the whole production team can turn the show around to be better than expected after it slumped.
Two current shows that seemed to have gone down and come up again are Scholar Who Walks the Night and Yong Pal. :)

Answers:
(1)
Sometimes (a), often (b), never (c). Mostly because of recommendations.
(2)
Mostly (a). When I don't "get" a show after 4 episodes, I drop it. If the acting or other aspects are too bad, I'll drop it earlier.
Sometimes I give shows a chance and have to drop them later (halfway through) when it turns out they are, indeed, not worth watching. This is usually when the plot writing is bad, something you cannot immediately tell after the first few episodes.
(3) [Only 2015 shows]
Birth of a Beauty (dragging, bad writing, bad acting)
Blood (dropped during the first episode)
Super Daddy Yeol (genre, format, poor acting)
Ex-GF Club (annoyed by the show)
Masked Prosecutor (after 1st episode, didn't like the genre)
Mrs Cop (after 2 episodes; WTF?)
KMHM (huge, incoherent mess)
Falling For Innocence (don't remember anything anymore)
Mask (bad writing, unbearable directing)
Warm and Cozy (obvious)
Producer (incoherent at first, boring later)
Scholar Who ... (after 3 episodes; no substance, boring)
The Time We ... (after 3 episodes of absolutely nothing)
Yong-pal (after 7 episodes; pretentious directing, mediocre acting, really poor writing, incoherent show)
(many others)
(4)
I didn't drop "Rosy Lovers" because I have a crush on Lee Mi-sook.
(5)
Gave KMHM a second chance after encouragement from people here on Dramabeans. Disliked the additional episodes even more, dropped it for good.
(6)
Very little. Little bit of amateur acting in school and college, did some editing on my father's plays. My father, my sister and several other family members studied drama and worked in different fields (writing, stage/film directing, stage acting, costume design, ...)

Thank you Jon G.
I've always enjoyed your pointed analyses and fun cynicism. What I notice is that you're very clear about what you like and dislike and you can see it very soon in a drama.I recall reading among your comments, that you've picked up quite a bit of drama knowledge from your family.
I have been casually reading about why people like what they do, and by extension... what enables them to recognise what is good or bad about something like dramas. Do you feel that you're more aware of what a good drama should be and can see very quickly where a drama is failing because you have the family background in it (so to speak)? Or what may you attribute this ability to?

I'm not sure. First, I'm not really sure whether I actually can make good predictions towards whether I will enjoy a show or not. Maybe I'm just really good at convincing myself that my decision was right ...
Within my family, I'm considered a bit of a blockhead, because I lack the kind of intuitive ability to evaluate dramatic arts/narratives. When I was young, my father took me to the movies and theatre plays almost every day and there was usually about one hour or more of discussion afterwards. I always was more prone to analytical than to holistic thinking, and while my father didn't manage to stop me from drifting away into sciences, this definitely helped me to understand drama and story-telling a little better.
To this day, I cannot switch off my brain completely when I watch/read something. There is always at least a tiny little process running in the background that tries to find the dramatic structure, that categorises scenes ("plot progress", "character introduction", ...), etc.pp.
I get in a bad mood very easily when these processes find too many things that bother me.
On the other hand, when the phenomenological component and the background processes agree on something (a scene is evenly paced, excellently filmed and at the same time very well embedded into the overall structure and it manages to expose character information), I will start to enjoy a show even if there are issues with, say, bad (or just unpleasant) acting or sexist writing or something.
K-drama, despite its low-brow aspiration, is still a form of art. A show with sloppy fundamentals in terms of dramatic composition or scene economy will very often also lack in other aspects and be more likely to create a mediocre or bad drama in the end.

1) C. Usually actors/actresses attract me to a drama, but if the story or the previews don't really draw me in or intrigue me, I back out. I might love the people behind it but it's the story that primarily motivates me to watch a drama.
2) B. Most of the time I drop a series in the middle or even towards the end. It's usually during the halfway mark that series start to change for the good or the bad.
3) Orange Marmalade. Producer (I had so much faith in you!). Yong-pal. Mi-rae's choice. High Society.
4) A. I have grown fond of the characters and want to see how they develop. Or I have high hopes that it can improve.
5) A. Cantabile Tomorrow. I was thinking of dropping this because my siblings wasn't interested and I really wanted us to bond over it (we all love Nodame, anime and movies). It had flaws but I saw that episode by episode it was improving. I loved the changes they made. I love the characters. I just wished they reshoot the ending.
6) B) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre but I always wanted to be part of a production because I enjoy watching dramas and movies.

Aah we are quite similar. I go for the story first and keep with it if the story is more or less coherent. Yes to your 4A and yes to wishing that Cantabile Tomorrow had not shot their ending first. It jarred so badly with the rest of the end episodes. In the end I only FFD it although I knew it was better after a while. I think I lost the stamina to watch everything LOL!

I guess because it was shot overseas, it would be such a waste of footage and money. But it just went back to square 1. It ruined the development and was very jarring.
It kinda reminded me of How I Met Your Mother. They shot the most prominent twist in the finale when they were just starting production of season 1. If the creators saw that they created something different from their original premise, then that the finale wouldn't be as horrible.
Moral of the story: Don't shoot the ending or an important scene for the finale when you're doing multiple seasons or live shooting.

1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because …
a combination of actor, writer, director, story. Sometimes it's only one of these ingredients, often it's more than one. I don't watch just for the "pretty". If I watch for an actor, they need to be able to act. If they can act, I still need them in a story that's, for the most part, solid.
2) I usually drop a series … in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes because that's normally enough to know that a drama doesn't work for me/isn't good. I sometimes follow recaps for a while longer, but I don't think I've ever thought that I should go back to a drama. I can't be bothered to waste my time on half-baked shows/terrible acting/mediocre writing etc.
3) Recent shows I dropped: High Society (made no sense), Mrs. Cop (made no sense, seems to be all over the place now), Oh My Ghostess (actually watched up to ep. 10 – but balance was way off in the love relationship, didn't like the two girls essentially using the guy), Orange Marmalade (too mishmash, some flat acting), Warm & Cozy (hated the characters, terrible writer), Super Daddy Yeol (too manipulative female lead), Ex-Girlfriend Club (made no sense, thought the female character was stupid, not my kind of humour), Dating not Marriage (not my kind of humour), and a gazillion more....
4) I will pretty much always drop it. Haven't got time to suffer through crap stuff. If it has fully aired already, I might marathon it through skip-watching though.
5) Not applicable … I haven't ever yet gone back to something I dropped. I might go back to Grapevine though.
6) I have a film blog (hiatus atm) and a lot of background in literary studies. I don't have much patience for bad writing and/or bad acting!

You go for at least a solid story or a solid actor but preferably both and more than that. Very sound.
I'm interested in the fact that you are in literary studies and therefore are very aware of what makes for good/bad writing. Do you agree that for yourself (and maybe among your friends who have a similar literary background), your intolerance level for bad writing kicks in very soon? ie do you think it's true that you just know so clearly that it's bad and so you can't bear reading or watching...? Therefore if this is true.... (if I may extrapolate), do you feel writers are likely to drop more shows? You mention you dropped "a gazillion more" :)
I certainly agree with you on High Society, OMG, W&C, Orange Marmalade.

Tbh, I think it just comes down to personal preferences. I'm not fond of bad writing, stock characters, overused tropes (too annoying, too predictable so I get bored) etc and I also am well aware that my favourite genre is slice of life, or, at least, fairly realistic shows. Which doesn't mean I don't watch other things – I'm quite fond of some of the quirky Japanese dramas (Nodame Cantabile, Kimi wa Petto, Hana Kimi, Date) – but that does require the writer needs have set up the story and its characters in such a way that I can suspend my disbelief. So when Dr. Stranger has a transplant person cruise around a city in a chase and then survive a fall from a bridge or Mrs. Cop has the leading lady make completely incompetent decisions again and again after selling her as very professional to us, then I'm out.
Are writers more likely to drop more shows? Nah. There are all kinds of writers after all. I'm sure someone like Stephenie Meyer would find something like Heirs entirely to her taste.
Most of all, I just don't want to waste my time on a terrible drama, when I know there is a better drama or film that I could be watching instead.

1d) I choose to began watching a show mostly because of the writer and it seems like it will have a good story
2a) I usually drop the show in the beginning because the first 2/3 episodes were not as good as I hoprp or because it didn't delivered what it promised in the preview
3) orange marmalade: because I can't watch sageuk
heirs: i don't know what exactly that drama tried to tell me
she's so lovable: this drama bored me to death
hidden identity: i can't really pinpoint what makes this drama disappointing for me, it's just couldn't make me care about all the characters
warm and cozy: definitely not warm and cozy at all
4a) Although a show is disappointing, I may not drop it because I still hold my hope that maybe that drama would do better in the later episodes

Hi Growingbeautifully :)
1- combination of the story, actors and writer but honestly if the script is bad there is nothing the others can do.
2- I try to drop by the 4th ep if it's still boring, of course some I know earlier it's just not my cup of tea, like Modern Farmer, and there are guys who can drag me through some silly dramas, even though they are not even decent actors like LMH, and I suspect Lee Soo Huyk is going the same way, shallow, I know. :)
3- I've dropped too many shows to list all but there are some I am proud of doing it eheheh. I love Joo Won but not even him could make me keep Good Doctor and Level 7. I like Lee Jong Suk but I dropped Doctor Crazy in the second ep. On the other hand maybe I should add the shows I mostly regret NOT dropping, they were Monstar, Plus Nine Boys, Prosecutor Princess and Nice Guy. I hated them and should have known better. :)
5- I can NOT believe I dropped White Christmas in the first episode and today it is one of my favorites kdramas. Short, well written and objective, if only they were all like that.
6- I have background in a different artistic area. :)

"1- combination of the story, actors and writer but honestly if the script is bad there is nothing the others can do." - This means that the writing has to be good or everything falls flat for you. It's pretty much how I feel too since the story comes first for me.
Watching for the guys... hey that's normal and won't those casting directors be glad to know that their decision to cast some nice looking actors actually works! LOL!
I've never tried White Christmas. The fact that it's short and well-written gets my attention.
What art(s) do you do, if you don't mind telling?

1) D: A combination of actors and the preview of the story. Though I will start a drama if I don't know any of the actors (which at this point I don't believe is possible lol) if the premise of the story looks good.
2) B: Towards the middle. I think usually I drop a series around the 5-7 episode mark. On rare occasions I drop the drama right before the last two episodes come out lol mostly because I hear a spoiler about the ending and I don't want to see it.
3) Manny, Marry Him If you Dare, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Nice Guy, Doctor Stranger, Flower Boy Next Door, Dream High, etc.
4) B: Nope I will definitely drop it.
5) A: There are some shows I'm glad I went back to because either the story got better or I was just in a certain mood to appreciate the show in a different light.

"... On rare occasions I drop the drama right before the last two episodes come out lol mostly because I hear a spoiler about the ending ..." - Whoa, so far into the show and a spoiler! So annoying! However I will still watch just to see how that ending was done visually... whether it could still get me to 'feel it'.
You know, I guess, on the Open Threads.... spoilers do abound? Just thought I'd mention it, in case you know, you're in the last few episodes of something and you come here to OT and get yourself spoiled!
"5) A: There are some shows I’m glad I went back to because either the story got better or I was just in a certain mood to appreciate the show in a different light."
Yes, this bears consideration. My last week's OT questions asked about shows that we like that others don't and I suppose it brought up the vice versa answers ie shows I hate that others like. Maybe it's a matter of the attitude, the mood, the state of one's life,... a show might make sense at a different time although it was dropped before. :)

1) b. Writers/directors. I follow writers more than directors because they have more power and they're a greater assurance of quality (let's put it this way--the greats can focus on being great, they don't have to worry about turning other people's stupid ideas into art). Obviously there are exceptions, like Ahn Pan-seok, who seems to have a lot more power than your average PD, but even visionaries like Kwak Jung-hwan (Conspiracy in the Court, Chuno), Kim Yong-soo (White Christmas), Kim Jin-min (Shin Don, La Dolce Vita), or Kim Heung-dong (Joseon X-Files) have to make the best of what they get. Kwak Jung-hwan was almost fired from KBS for doing Conspiracy in the Court, and the industry is far happier wasting their talent on dribble than taking a risk and letting them experiment or realize artistic ambitions.
There are a few actors I'll try to watch no matter what, but I've learned the hard way that this isn't a good idea (let's put it this way--it's hard being a Moon Geun-young fan).
2. a. I would have put c when I first discovered Kdrama, and b a year or so ago, but I've lost my patience over time. There are exceptions, but if something turns me off in the first four episodes, chances are slim to none that it'll get better, considering the live shoot system.
3. Hmmm, shows that I've dropped...there are a lot, and I doubt whether I can remember them all. I think the shows I finished that I should have dropped have stuck with me more--I can rattle some off pretty easily...Goong (which I watched early days, and finished out of perversity--the last endless stretch of that drama was so painful. So painful); Playful Kiss (again, among the first couple I watched--not sure which was worse, the rampant sexism, the heroine's rampant stupidity, or the acting, which was so exaggerated on one end and so non-existent on the other that I shouted at the screen no matter who was on it); Heirs (most un-fun hate watch I've ever done. Love is the moooooment...enough said); and The Return of Iljimae (I tried way too hard to like it at first, then realized it wasn't meant to be and hate watched the rest of it...or would have if I weren't so checked out by the end I forgot which characters had died).
4. b. Again, earlier in my addiction I would have answered a, but I've learned the hard way that you rarely get rewarded for perseverance. Well, I guess I did sit through Secret Door for the sake of the cast and what the story should have been, but that drama didn't go to crap completely until the halfway point.
5. c. Not applicable
6. B. No background in drama.

This thing about power between writer and director.... it will, I feel depend on the individuals and how they work, as well as how they work as a team. Sometimes the writer is able to stand firm for their art, but if in the creative process they got carried away and went off tangent from the original agreed arc/plot/character whatever... the director has the right to require a re-write of parts of the script.
" ...the industry is far happier wasting their talent on dribble than taking a risk and letting them experiment or realize artistic ambitions."
This seems to be what we are facing a lot of now, with so much dependent on ratings and PPL. Art is sacrificed to need once again.

lol just realized I wrote "dribble" instead of "drivel." Thanks for bearing with me anyway haha.
Anyway, you bring up a good point. It is true that a lot of writers are pressured to sell out, and very few good ones get through the sausage factory with their integrity and/or talent intact. And that sometimes the director has to take the writer in hand (Im Sung-han comes to mind haha, though I'm not sure if any PD has managed to wrangle her).
I don't know, maybe following writers over directors is just a product of my own biases? I do engage with writing first, as opposed to visual storytelling. I can watch shows with crappy production values. I can stomach crappy acting (to a point). But if I think the story (ie, the whole point of the drama) is nonsense, I'm out. Like, for example: if I had to choose between something like Golden Apple (so-so production and uneven acting, but great writing) or something like Blade and Petal (innovative, amazing production and great acting, but terrible writing), I'd pick Golden Apple in a heartbeat. Not saying I can't appreciate what Blade and Petal does well, just that if it really came down to it, I find its flaws much harder to forgive.

Hello! This is an interesting questionnaire.
1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because …
a) of the actor(s) - An advice: Don't do this! (Yes, I'm talking about Yong Pal and Producers - this one because of Gong Hyo Jin, the other because of Joo Won)
c) preview and/or the story is the kind I like
2) I usually drop a series …
a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes because too many dialogues (like people who talk too fast), since I can't see the actors expressions while reading a lot of subtitles (better read a book), incoherent story, too much romance
3) Producers, Orange Marmalade, Mask, Liar Game, Seonam, HITTG, TWTWB, Yong Pal, Punch, Valid Love, Angry Mom and Inspiring Generation.
I only have comments in some of them. In general, I didn't find these interesting. The ones I watched more episodes were Valid Love (13 episodes) and TWTWB (9 episodes). Both are really slow. Valid Love is great in being realistic, actors are great and even the OST is perfect, but I realized it didn't have enough story to fill 20 episodes. TWTWB also has great acting and the most beautiful leads ever, I guess, but it became boring to me. There's also Inspiring Generation
(8/9 episodes). I was not interested in the story, also find it weird that Gaya was the only relevant girl at the point of the drama.
Seonam = only watched 2 episodes. Wish the girls looked more realistic, less like cartoon characters (let's not forget I only watched two episodes).
Punch = I've been watching too many serious things and that's probably why I dropped this. I plan to return to this one someday.
4) Although a show is disappointing …
b) Not applicable … I will definitely drop it. I dropped 12 dramas this year!
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again …
b) Not applicable … I was not glad!!!
Reply 1994. It took me ive months to finish it. I dropped it and then I returned...wish the drama was kept in my dropped drama list. There are too many episodes and they are too long.
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre

I have to agree with you that too much fast-talk puts me off... This is very common in Japanese crime procedurals, and medical dramas...from any country. The fast-talk and super-speedy camera cuts usually last for only a few episodes, which I also dislike, cos I think, if anything, a drama should try to stay consistent. Even if I dislike that style, I will credit dramas that at least carry it through most episodes. Most start with what they believe is an "exciting BANG," but when it peters out in the subsequent episodes, the contrast makes things worse for me.
Come to think of it, the fast-talking, "clever" sort of dialogue is probably what made me dislike (to varying degrees): Liar Game, Iris, City Hunter, Vampire Prosecutor, and shows like that...

This is interesting. I may get turned off by certain things but not fast talking as I pause and read the subs. I do prefer shows to be consistent if they are experimenting especially with a style. However some things like the weird sepia tones in Angry Mom, I was glad to see gone. I felt it was a not too subtle way to telling us that those were sombre times.

Talking faster than usual isn't the whole problem. I just know for a fact that regular people like you and I don't really talk so eloquently, and if so, it takes practice. We tend to pause, think about word choice and delivery, lose track of our thoughts, etc.. And, then, a lot of jargon gets thrown in, too.
And I get annoyed if I have to hit the pause button all the time just to get the gist of things.. haha.

I like that you're so clear about knowing what you like and will not regret dropping a show. I think I dither a bit and take a long time to drop anything because I'm not so clear.

1. (a)
2. (a) & (b) My critical period is between episodes 4 and 7.
3. Queen In-Hyun's Man. It got too saccharine for my taste.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Love Park Min-young but I couldn't stand the leading guy. Plus, he wasn't even cute.
Coffee Prince. The leading man was too much of an asshole and he wasn't hot enough for me to put up with it, lol.
Master's Sun. The leading guy was boring and his haircut bugged me.
Yong Pal. Got too schmoopy.
4. (b)
5. (c) I give a show a couple episodes to hook me. But once I'm done, I'm done.

Interesting questions/poll :D
1) It depends on how much time I have to catch up the new or still airing series or the old ones. I always watch any drama for the actors first, but mostly, I watch and finish any drama based on recommendation from people who have the same taste in kdrama like me, for example: Angry Mom. I didn't even know who the actors are, but I ended up watching it because someone kept recommending it to me haha.
2) b. High Society (for obvious reason lol), Joseon Gunman (I lost interest suddenly, didn't know why), The Scholar (I started to watch the epi 12, and felt like I didn't miss anything. and I found myself enjoy reading the recap more than watching it), and a weekend drama
4) a..because there is something that still keeps making me curious! or I really hope the show to get better, so I stay until it finishes.. The best example for this case are Sensory Couple and Mask. (I almost dropped OMG at epi 14, but I'm really glad I could finish it!)
5) It depends on my mood (lmao) and how much free time I have to pick up that drama among all those new (and more interesting) ones
6) b (but I wish to have any background in dramas! I even have a dream to go to SK, only to see the BTS of any kdrama XD)

Aside from starting mainly for actors first (I go for story first) we are pretty similar. I saw that others were saying they were dropping OMG, Sensory Couple and Mask but I was glad I held on too. Yes, because I'd liked to have more of a background in literary and drama analysis, I'm asking all these questions here. It's truly interesting! :)

1) I have started dramas for all these reasons: I like the actor(s), the writer is one whose work I have previously admired, I am a big fan of the genre (dark procedurals from OCN and political dramas are always checked out but Cheo Young - where are you????), and sometimes I just find a title intriguing.
2) There's no particular place I will drop a drama. Usually I will after the second or third episode but Dr. Stranger I dropped about 20 minutes into the first episode and That Winter the Wind Blows I dropped about 2/3 into the last episode.
3) Hwajung - watched for Cha Seung-won and when he left I wasn't interested enough to continue. Warm and Cosy - very dull and boring at the time but this one I may just check out again. Masked Prosecutor - the scene on the staircase with Kim Sun-ah cowering while being menaced by a man on a motorcycle did me in - this is your idea of a hard nosed cop, k-drama?
4) Even though a show has suddenly started going not only sideways but in reverse, I will keep watching if I am invested in the characters. God's Gift - 14 Days and Mask are examples of this.
5) I dropped Yang Dong-gun's Hero because I found him very annoying and mannered as a actor but then I started watching it again and I kind of fell in love with him so go figure!
6) I have no background in film production, acting or screen writing but my husband is a screenwriter for film and television, written graphic novels etc and I read and critique all his stuff. But does he listen to me??? Sometimes.

Also some dramas that I ordinarily would never watch I do so because they have something about them that resonates in my personal life. Good Doctor is one of these. I have a cousin who is very much like the good doctor of the title in that he is a high functioning autistic person with a good job. He was engaged at the time the show aired and got married in the late spring of 2014. He and his wife just had an absolutely adorable baby girl a month ago. Lots of people on Dramabeans wished him well when Good Doctor was being recapped and their kind comments were very much appreciated.

I do the same I think, about watching shows when I'm invested in the characters. I notice people dropping it but I still want to continue to see how the character grows. LOL! dropping Doctor Stranger within the first episode. I thought it was still coherent until the bridge scene. I don't know why I watched That Winter TWB... maybe just wanted to see if Song Hye Kyo's character survives this time. LOL!
It's interesting that you get to read scripts and may have a hand in influencing the screenplay. Does your husband watch the same shows as you and does he point out which is good and which is bad and drops the latter quickly?
Belated congratulations on the birth of your cousin's baby!

I watched TWtWB mainly for Jo In-sung's luscious lips and his many wonderful winter coats plus a mild curiosity as to how he managed to fit all that stuff in one tiny rolling suitcase. But during the last episode I had a sudden overwhelming urge to Just. Stop. Watching. I did like the movie it was based on, Love Me Not with Moon Geun-young and Kim Joo-hyuk, a lot better.
My criticisms of my husband's work are mostly mechanical, for want of a better word. Like, this scene should come earlier or you've used too many words of dialogue to get this across. Have the character say it like this. My husband, however, has a much better idea of what is commercial and what will sell which is a good thing as he is the family's principal breadwinner. We do share a love of classic Hollywood films and goofball comedies but that's about it. He maintains I'm too sophisticated for him. I have tried to get him to watch Korean films and dramas with me but he just can't get into them. He is absolutely the most annoying person to watch almost anything with though. He often just will not shut up and keeps a running stream of dialogue through shows I am trying to enjoy. He will say things like, "And now the door will open in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1" He is usually right but it drives me nuts!
My cousin's new daughter is so sweet! I took her for a long walk this afternoon while her mother had a nap and got to pretend she was mine. I have two teenaged sons and it's getting a bit late in the game to try for a daughter and I'd probably have another son anyway.

Thanks for your reply. I know what you mean about the spouse talking over the show when we want to concentrate. Trouble is mine may not be even speaking about the show when he suddenly has something to say LOL! Nowadays we have to make a date to watch a show together or else we'll be on our separate laptops as he will not watch Korean dramas and I watch hardly anything else.
It's great hanging around with young kids. I do that once a week and although I don't pretend they are mine, it's lovely having them planting themselves on my lap and having so much to say and such sweet smiles to share. Best part... their parents take them away to feed them LOL! and I get to go home to my big kids and kdramas. :D

4) Although a show is disappointing …
a) I may not/don’t drop it because it's a gorgeous train wreck and I can't take my eyes off of it: Hyde, Jekyll & Me
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again …
a) I’m glad I did not give up the following shows because sometimes a production rights itself again.

Hi Growingbeautifully! Interesting questionnaire, here is mine
1). D. Combination of actors & preview + story. I used to not pay attention to director and writer but now i plan to remember them.
2). A. If i don't like it from the beginning i will drop it altogether. Or else i'll try my best to endure the whole ride. Basically being masochist, i know ._.
3). Show that i dropped:
Flower Boy Ramyun Shop - somehow Jung Il Woo's character really annoys me and i suffer from severe second-lead syndrome. The story also don't interest me.
Fashion King - bleh.
TTILY - strong chemistry, boring show
Scholar - The writer frustrates me. Too bad, because i love my Changmin here.
Wonderful Mama - draggy and typical weekend drama, although i really consider start watching again bcs of Park Bo Geum.
Reply 1994 - i found this uninteresting, maybe bcs still can't move on from Reply 97
Nice Guy - so angsty and so unrealistic
Secret Garden - Hyunbin'character also annoys me.
4). Although a show is disappointing I don’t drop it because I like the early episode and want to find out if they can salvage it in the end.
5). Usually B. Although at the end it gives decent ending, the overall drama leaves a bitter taste in my memory which makes me unsatisfied and unhappy. The obvious example: Producer, Sensory Couple
6). B.

1. I tend to follow writers, although I have watched certain shows primarily to see more of particular actors. I'll also check out shows that reviewers I trust rave about.
2. I've dropped shows at different points, but it usually happens whenever I realize that I'm no longer invested in the plot or characters, or when it becomes obvious that the writer has no clear sense of where things are going.
3. I dropped Sword and Flower at episode 8 when it became clear that the writers were totally uninterested in logic or coherent character development. I dropped Innocent Man after episode 1 because I couldn't imagine wanting to spend 20 hours with any of the characters. I dropped Joseon Gunman around episode 15 because the portrayal of the female characters was driving me nuts.
4. I'll sometimes stick with a show if it comes highly recommended, although I do that less frequently now than I used to.
5. There are shows that I was concerned about initially that developed into really lovely viewing experiences (Mixed-Up Investigation Agency comes to mind), but there are other shows that I stuck with to the bitter end that I wish I'd dropped sooner (City Hunter, Damo, Joseon X-Files).
6. I'm a stage director and theatre professor, so while I don't work in the TV/film industry, I do have a lot of experience working with scripts and actors.

You might have made the wrong decision with "Innocent Man". Not only is episode 1 very misleading in terms of story and characters, you also don't need to spend 20 hours with those characters, as they get memory- and personality-wiped a couple of times (and undergo unexplained personality-changes on top of that too). Not sure whether that's a good thing though ...

Not the dreaded amnesia plot twist! That's usually one of my least favorite devices but perhaps in this case . . . Honestly, though, my biggest problem with the initial episode was that I didn't believe that real people would actually act the way the characters were behaving, which is usually a cue for me to run.

I felt like it was a show that tended to substitute atmosphere and "mystery" for actual narrative payoffs. I don't need everything wrapped up in a neat little bow, but I get annoyed when shows mistake opacity for profundity.

I see what you're saying here and normally I'd agree with you, but I actually really enjoyed that about Joseon X-Files. I'm a huge sci fi fan, so it was a joy to see well-worn tropes and concepts transplanted in a world where all the usual tools for understanding them fail to apply. Like, suddenly we don't have techno babble or biomedical jargon, or even a familiarity with modern technology, to filter encounters with aliens and supernatural creatures, so suddenly the unknown seems unknowable, which is such a rare achievement for the genre. Sure, it was frustrating at times, but I feel like this is one case where opacity actually was profound.
korini
September 12, 2015 at 2:37 AM
You're right. Usually opaque doesn't mean profound and over-analysing doesn't make us sound intellectual, but Joseon X-Files was not the case. I consider it one of the best shows I've even seen worldwide and in my line of work I've been forced to watch a whole lot. It's a paradigm of how great a project can be even with limited budget, if you have a clear vision and people who actually know what they're doing.

Yeah I didn't like Nice Guy either--it was so solipsistic and masturbatory I couldn't stand it. I'm not a big fan of Lee Kyung-hee dramas in general--she usually goes for really ambitious macro level themes, but she has to be the laziest writer in dramaland, in terms of research and micro level structure. It's like, the themes might be there, but if you can't even watch the drama and find enjoyment on a basic level, what's the point? Thank You is the only one of hers I've finished, because the story and spirit behind it somehow transcended her usual mess of flaws.

I actually haven't seen any of Lee Kyung-Hee's other shows, but the beginning of Nice Guy didn't make me inclined to start. With Joseon X-Files, I never felt like the writers had fully thought through the mythology of their universe (or if they had, they didn't intend to share it because they were hoping for a second season). There's a difference between a show where you feel there actually is some sort of order or logic to the mysteries, even if it isn't spelled out, and one where the writers just didn't bother to construct an overarching narrative structure. It's possible I lost important details in translation, but the show never convinced me that it had a firm grasp on its own internal mechanics.

Thank you @wonhwa
I'm hearing echoes in what you say, in what @Susan says and she's a producer, also experienced in working with scripts and actors. This is so interesting and perfectly understandable, ie that the things that people with a similar show/theatre background look for in a good show are also similar.
"1. I tend to follow writers, although I have watched certain shows primarily to see more of particular actors. I’ll also check out shows that reviewers I trust rave about." - I'm beginning to think, it will be safer to go for the writer if I want to be more secure about finding a good show.
"2. I’ve dropped shows at different points, but it usually happens whenever I realize that I’m no longer invested in the plot or characters, or when it becomes obvious that the writer has no clear sense of where things are going." - This is the million dollar question and I believe it's your experience that speaks.. because I will ask... how does one tell that the writer has lost his direction? Sometimes it's obvious but not always.
"3. I dropped Sword and Flower at episode 8 when it became clear that the writers were totally uninterested in logic or coherent character development. ..." - OK, this one I understand and can recognise, and yet, will they ever get back on track? They could if coached? The writing could improve?
"5. There are shows that I was concerned about initially that developed into really lovely viewing experiences (Mixed-Up Investigation Agency comes to mind), but there are other shows that I stuck with to the bitter end that I wish I’d dropped sooner (City Hunter, ..." - I am trying to re-watch City Hunter with mixed reaction. I may be engaged for a bit, but it loses me fast too.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'd actually really like to hear more about stage directing and theatre craft and how different it is from producing televised shows.

Hi @Growingbeautifully! I don't drop tons of shows, usually because I tend to wait to watch them until they're finished airing and I can get a better sense of whether they're going to fly off the rails or not. I am a lot more likely to stick with a show through rough patches if reviews suggest there will ultimately be a worthwhile payoff. Partly because of my theatre training, I probably do focus on dramatic structure more than other folks might, which means I can usually tell if builds or turning points aren't happening or a show doesn't have a clear sense of direction. City Hunter was an odd watch because the overall structure was decent, but the characterizations were so inconsistent that the individual scenes often made no sense. I felt like the writer had the characters do or say whatever was convenient at any given moment without bothering to think about how real humans might behave.

1e) I start to watch mostly out of bordom and depending on the mood. Usually rom-coms which are the least realistic genre is the ideal one to entertain me but not always.
2c) Being relatively new to this "universe"(I started watching dramas in'12), I rarely drop a series I've already started.
3) The only show that comes to mind is Take Care of The Young Lady. I did want to finish it (I had finished the terrible One Fine Day, after all), but I still don't know why I just couldn't,-and it wasn't even the worse drama ever...
4a) I will most surely keep watching. I've seen atrocious films before, not to mention TV shows with lots and lots of episodes or seasons; so, a 16 to 20 episode series is just a piece of cake for me, lol! Besides I'm still struggling to find dramaland's "rules and regulations" behind all those productions.
5a) DB's ratings used to have a huge impact when I was a complete rookie. So, that "4" in Haeundae Lovers was so discouraging that I got very close to dropping it right after episode one. Thank God, I didn't because I had a great time watching (most of) it plus I saw actors whom I only knew from cinema in something totally different.
6b) Good Lord, no...no background at all. I said I want to entertain myself as a viewer not lose my sleep (and occasionally some hair) like my sister does. People in entertainment Industry have the higher mortality rate outside war zones...poor,sis!

"1e) I start to watch mostly out of bordom and depending on the mood. Usually rom-coms which are the least realistic genre is the ideal one to entertain me but not always." - I'm finding that I'm moving more into thriller, crime-detection shows now although a good rom or a good com is always welcome. If a show can combine the thriller-rom-com well, that's the best!
"3) The only show that comes to mind is Take Care of The Young Lady. I did want to finish it (I had finished the terrible One Fine Day, after all), but I still don’t know why I just couldn’t,-and it wasn’t even the worse drama ever…" - That's it for me too... ie I may not know why I suddenly want to drop a show. I just call it the annoyance factor but sometimes it's hard to name the annoyance.
"4a) I will most surely keep watching. I’ve seen atrocious films before, not to mention TV shows with lots and lots of episodes or seasons; so, a 16 to 20 episode series is just a piece of cake for me, lol! Besides I’m still struggling to find dramaland’s “rules and regulations” behind all those productions." - That is something that I'm kind of doing by asking these questions on the OT. I wonder if there are some winning rules that make for a good show. I want to be able to recognise them. So one way is to ask for advice and watch lots of recommended shows. Trouble is of course, that time is not unlimited.
"5a) DB’s ratings used to have a huge impact when I was a complete rookie. ..." - they still are pretty good in helping us locate the shows that are not total duds.
"6b) Good Lord, no…no background at all. I said I want to entertain myself as a viewer not lose my sleep (and occasionally some hair) like my sister does. @Growingbeautifully
It's true I'm getting impatient with kdramas. I have watched countless other series and telenovelas from all over the world (curtesy of sister, of course) and I've comprehend their patterns, the little secrets behind the "who's cast where" plus several other restrictions in terms of production department.
Korean TV seems a tad more odd due to many more regulations, tight control of media, direct censorship and peculiar perception of "scandals". Live-shooting and ratings always perplex the already complicated k-ent and so on. That's why I don't drop shows,- part of me hopes for a twist of plot and other part feels sorry for the casts and crews, given the strict rules. On the other hand, cinema has, without a doubt, gained international prestige throughout the years and it still is my favorite Korean entertainment.
Now, the other issue in dramaland: Recommended series. Unless it's full of tropes, a drama has a quite different appeal to viewers with different backgrounds, culture and age. We can all enjoy Greatest Love or Oh My Ghostess but can teenagers even bear to watch one episode of Assembly, Reset or The Chaser? However breathtaking a plot might be, younger audiences still prefer Heirs, right? Not that I haven't had fun with Boys over Flowers and other similar "bubble gums"; on the contrary, that's why I watch fluffy dramas in the first place. Let's take the rating system in DBs, for example. American-Koreans who watch dramas for as long as they can remember have completely different standards from a European rookie. So, I try to give everything a fair chance since I have no preconceptions about actors/writers/directors, their previous works nor their reputation in the "star"-system.
And yes, the "death-rate" is a macabre inside joke in my sister's field. With all the stress, the accidents and the diseases they suffer, she always say that it's no less than a war zone for those who work in the entertainment business, LOL!

3. The only one I've dropped recently was Secret Door. Lee Je Hoon's acting was great, but that wasn't enough to keep me interested in the boringggg story. And other show I've dropped was Coffee Prince! Omg.... I started watching that years ago, but abruptly stopped with one or two episodes left for some reason. Maybe I got distracted by other things or more interesting dramas. I was going to give it a try again years later, but then I would have had to start over so I was like forget it. xP
4. a) When I start a drama, I like to finish it - good or bad so that I get the complete picture of the drama overall.

LOL! Yeah, I sometimes finish watching a series just to be thorough about it but I'm not sure that it gave me all that much of a sense of completion or satisfaction. I believe as I've watched more and better shows, my tolerance for lousy shows has dropped so my satisfaction rate in completing a series that is not great is also lower.
I was thinking of re-watching Coffee Prince because it's supposed to be not bad... but I understand the last episodes were extensions and that could be why you felt disengaged and stopped watching. I'm still wondering if I want to struggle with watching Gaksital (more struggle) or City Hunter (less struggle). :)

1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because
c) preview and/or the story is the kind I like
Generally, even if I like the actors, if I dislike the genre, I won't end up liking the show
2) I usually drop a series …
b) towards the middle even after the first few episodes disappointed me because _ _ _
There are times a show doesn't really get going till a few episodes in. I'm thinking of the longer weekend dramas where you'll have like 6 episodes set in one time frame and the rest of the show set at a later time frame. There are several of those shows where I actually liked the earlier-set episodes and ended up disliking the later ones.
3) If you answered 2a) and 2b) please name a few of the shows you dropped.
Big Man
Cheongdamdong Alice
Heirs
Hyde, Jekyll, Me
Marry Him if You Dare
May Queen
Modern Farmer
Mrs. Cop
Pride and Prejudice
Rosy Lovers
Super Daddy Yeol
The Woman who Married Three Times
4) Although a show is disappointing …
a) I may not/don’t drop it because _ _ _
b) Not applicable … I will definitely drop it.
A combination of A and B, because shows tend to need to be disappointing for a few weeks before I drop them.
There are certain plot elements that will cause me to drop pretty quickly, though. An OTP switch is a big one. And if I sense that the writer and PD are playing two leading men against one another to gauge fan reaction as to who is the male half of the OTP, that will bug me as well.
A lack of coherent plot will lead me to dropping a show as well.
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again …
a) I’m glad I did not give up the following shows because _ _ _
Because usually I'm invested enough in the show that I want to see it through to the conclusion. Example: Warm and Cozy. Yes it's a rather insignificant piece of fluff, but after weathering the aggravating behavior of the male lead for several weeks, I wanted to see the payoff of him realizing he was in love with the female lead.

"There are certain plot elements that will cause me to drop pretty quickly, though. An OTP switch is a big one. And if I sense that the writer and PD are playing two leading men against one another to gauge fan reaction as to who is the male half of the OTP, that will bug me as well." - Yes, I feel any kind of sudden switch without sufficiently clue-ing us in earlier is a big no-no. It seems to show a lack of integrity in that the production was leading viewers up the garden path, or just catering to ratings and not to a good story.
I'd like a show to respect the viewer and give us coherence to a large extent. :)

usually the problem is bad writing or I don't like the writing. For example I hate dreamlike atmosphere like in Jekyll Hyde and Me or whatever the title was. If I try watching any of the first four eps several times and can't seem to get past them, then I drop it. If I can get through 4 I usually will watch to the end.
3) Jekyll Hyde Me, Playful Kiss, almost dropped pinocchio bc I didn't care about the characters early enough so ep 3 and 4 were kind of boring, Inspiring Generation
4 a - if I'm interested enough to get through 4-5 eps I'm usually interested enough to keep going and see what happens next, or I like the actors enough to watch something with ridic writing. I more kind of get amused at the ridiculousness instead of pissed enough to stop watching

"... usually the problem is bad writing ..." - It's a toss up for me between writing and acting but I'm beginning to feel that if a story can hold me, I can probably ignore the bad acting, so yes, good writing is important to me too.
"... I more kind of get amused at the ridiculousness instead of pissed enough to stop watching" - Yes, me too... the watching a train wreck syndrome with a wry amusement as we wait to see just how bad it will be. :)

Totally, after a while it just becomes amusing and you sit there like "oh noooo did they really write that". I guess I watch all Korean dramas with the idea that I will be entertained and I may have to suspend my disbelief in places, so I'm ready to have that attitude at times.
For your first point, I often watch things because there is a cast member I'm interested in, so that is a big help in continuing with things if there is some sub-par acting in places. Bc of that I guess writing puts me over the edge to drop territory more often

1. A mixture of all. If the drama is filled with actors/actresses I don't really know but I enjoy the premise of the show or it's teaser then I'd probably give it a shot. I would definitely watch a drama that has the following actresses in it (Yoon Eun Hye, Gong Hyo Jin, Ha Ji Won, Kim Sun Ah, Moon Geun Young, Park Bo Young) or if it's a Hong Sisters drama or a drama by Lee Yoo Jung/Lee Jung Ah (Coffee Prince, Heart to Heart).
2. A) No matter how bad the drama, I will always give it 4 episodes since some dramas are slow starters. 4 episodes should be enough for a drama to find it's groove. If it's still a stinker after 4 episodes then it's adios amigos.
3. Mr. Baek, My Secret Hotel.. I can't remember the rest which is the whole point in dropping them.. to forget. lol
4. A) Because it has one of the 6 actresses mentioned above. It's a badge of honor that I actually finished watching Mirae's Choice. lol
5. A) Because some of my favorite dramas did not have a great first few episodes.

I have some exceptions. I am not a fan of sageuks or dramas with more than 20 episodes. I have watched a few dramas of one or the other but a combination of both (i.e. 20+ episode sageuk) is my kryptonite. I will not watch it no matter who the actress is. lmao

I feel the same, which is why I am often in awe of those who can tell within 4 episodes that they will definitely not like the rest of the show.
"4. A) Because it has one of the 6 actresses mentioned above. It’s a badge of honor that I actually finished watching Mirae’s Choice. lol" - I too sort of finished watching it, but it left me cold. We both need those badges of honor!!

I love this! Recently I was wondering about some of the things in your questionaire as well.
1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because:
c) the story is the kind I like or something in the story piques my interest.
Some story descriptions are very vague. In that case, I look up who is writing the drama or at the actors. So you could say combination of a), b) and c), but the story is the most important element for me.
I never watch for the writer or actor alone, because I usually regret it. That is what has happened recently with Masked Prosecutor. Watched it for Joo Sang Wook...
2) I usually drop a series:
b) towards the middle even after the first few episodes don't stir my interest as much.
When the story is interesting, I believe it is possible for it to get better, but if its not the case even after I saw the 8th/9th episode, I drop the drama. I also drop it towards the middle, because it is usually when the story gets bad, boring, repetitive, etc.
3) In the past I finished all dramas I had started. Later I realized I really cant finish some of them and that was my breaking point. (I don't remember which drama(s) was it.) It came together with the realization, there are some dramas that are worth the time spend on them, so why bother with the bad ones.
Nowadays there are only few dramas I finish...
Not finished 2015 dramas: Mask - repetitive, Persevere Goo Hae Ra - did not like the development, Hyde, Jekyll and Me - tried to like the drama, but there were tooooo many elements to dislike it, Super Daddy Yul - did not really like the heroine and the writing towards the end went downhill, The Producers - boring and I feel Gong Hyo Jin is always playing the same character, High Society - boring... (of course, this is only my opinion)
4) Although a show is disappointing:
a) I may not drop it because of the great chemistry of the leads or I care for the characters AND the plot is somehow bearable.
(However, if the drama has too many plot holes and wtf moments or the characters act unreasonable, I will drop it like its hot.)
5) Of the shows that ...:
I either drop a drama or "shelve" it. When I drop it, it means I don't like it at all. If I "shelve" it, it may be a good drama, but I don't feel like watching it right now and plan to do it later. (e.g. Orange Marmalade, Oh My Ghost.)
But to be hones, there are too many "shelved" dramas on my list. One of the reasons is, there are so many dramas to choose from, so I rarely go back to the "shelved" ones.
One recent drama I shelved and then finished was Falling for Innocence. But to be honest, I regret it. The drama is like a beautiful empty box to me. I don't know why, but I was missing something in the drama. (It may be the heroine. I found her not really developed. I noticed I tend to like those dramas with great female characters more.)
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre

You're very similar to me. I go for story above all and I will take usually more than 4-6 episodes before I decide to drop something. And ditto to what you say in 3) and 4) as well.
"I never watch for the writer or actor alone, because I usually regret it. That is what has happened recently with Masked Prosecutor. Watched it for Joo Sang Wook…" - LOL! I never did finish that show. I had it in mind to complete it but just never got around to it so it has become dropped.
"4) Although a show is disappointing:
a) I may not drop it because of the great chemistry of the leads or I care for the characters AND the plot is somehow bearable.
(However, if the drama has too many plot holes and wtf moments or the characters act unreasonable, I will drop it like its hot.)" - I have some tolerance for plot holes, as long the drama universe does not suddenly shift and the characters are engaging.
"5) Of the shows that …: I either drop a drama or “shelve” it." - I'm more likely to re-watch a show that I recall fondly than pick-up a shelved show. If something was not compelling enough to make me want to watch it all the way through, I'm not too convinced that I've changed so much, so that I'd like it now. :)

"2) I usually drop a series …
a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes if it doesn’t hold my attention. only rarely do i drop it midway or at the end mostly coz the plot gets crazy/boring/irksome" - I'm noticing that people who drop shows earlier are more likely to be people with some drama/theatre or writing background, such as yourself. :) Maybe knowing what good writing should be, it seems almost unforgivable to have bad writing thrust upon you/them?
"5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again …
c) Not applicable … I do not ever go back to something I dropped." - understandable... again I'm thinking it's because of the experience and knowledge that you have, so that you can tell it's not going to be worth it trying to watch again. :)

1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because (a) of the actors. They usually are ads in and of themselves, and because I don't follow kdrama news all that closely, I first get excited by who's starring in something, and only after do I look at what the story is about.
But my choice also depends on the drama or book I just finished. If I just watched finished a rom-com, I usually prefer to watch something different. So I guess my answer really is (d), my reasons are usually a combination of who the actors are and what I watched or read immediately prior to the show in question.
2) I usually drop a series (a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes when I have trouble with the set-up, the pacing, the acting, etc.,... but really because I have no patience for things I don't like whatsoever. There are too many other/better things I could be spending my time on!
3) Shows I've dropped (and forgive me if the full title of the drama is somewhat incorrect):
- Boys over Flowers
- To the Beautiful You
- Angry Mom
- My Lovely Princess
- Return of Ijimae
- The Princess's Lover (??)
- Answer Me 1994...tried twice, because I loved Answer Me 1997! But I found the first few episodes really tedious.
- Thornbirds
- Empress Ki
- What Happened in Bali
- Jang Ok Jang...which I really liked in the beginning and then dropped in the middle because, well, life happened and I lost steam, and I know how it ends already and can imagine how the latter part of the drama will go. I might try to pick it back up.
- Lovers in Paris
- Prosecutor Princess
- Let's Eat 1
- Heard it Through the Grapevine...again, I got busy and lost steam. Will probably pick this up again.
- A Wife's Credentials
- Vampire Prosecutor
...and countless others
4) Although a show is disappointing (a) I may not/don’t drop it because of other people's recommendations. I'm aware that I'm an impatient person, so I know what I may not like in the beginning doesn't necessarily mean a show isn't good later on.
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again (a) I’m glad I did not give up the following shows...
- Gaksital...because it showed me a part of Korean history I hadn't known about before, and many performances were quite moving.
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies or theatre, but I was an English major, and stories are what I love to read, watch and analyze!

Wow, you've got an interesting way of choosing what to watch. I'm thinking of changing how I choose a show to combining the story I think I'll like with who the writer is.... but that may mean I end up choosing very few shows! LOL... so I'll only do that when I'm fed up of all the current shows.
"2) I usually drop a series (a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes when I have trouble with the set-up, the pacing, the acting, etc.,… " - I mentioned this up-thread to, that I'm noticing those of us who have some literary analyses background (like yourself) or drama production or writing background are more likely to be more impatient and drop shows faster for bad writing and "trouble with the set-up...pacing" is more to do with writing.
"4) Although a show is disappointing (a) I may not/don’t drop it because of other people’s recommendations. I’m aware that I’m an impatient person, so I know what I may not like in the beginning doesn’t necessarily mean a show isn’t good later on." - that's true for me too. My patience wears out more easily nowadays as well but I'm never sure if I'm short-changing myself if I give up too soon. :)

My answers:
1d) combination of actors and story/premise I like.. For me, if I don't like the actors there's no point in following the drama unless the story itself is very interesting. Of course I sometimes only watch drama because of the story regardless the actors and sometimes watch drama because of the actors regardless the story. But for majority, it's combination of actor+story.
2a) I would drop the show towards the middle if it doesn't hold my interest. Usually 6-8 eps is enough for me to drop a drama.
3) Hogu's Love: I think I dropped it in ep 5. Nothing interest me and UEE's acting bugs me so much.
TTWNIL: after ep 6, but I do follow Heads' recap just for hilarity and watch the ending. Really really boring and really irritating.
High School King of Savvy: even with Seo In Guk's charm, I can't finish the drama.. Dunno, probably I'll pick up later
I Remember You: I know I know, I must be the only one dropped IRY. But 1st, I don't really like the story and how the cops presented here.
Etc (I don't really put track which show I dropped and which one is not, since I download the show not streaming)
4a) I would not drop it if my favorite actor/actress in it.. I would definitely suffer for them and finish the drama once and for all.. This applies for Warm And Cozy that I solely watch for the OTP and Goddess of Fire that I watch for Moon Geun Young and Kim Bum.
5a) 49 Days. I never been so glad to not drop this show. I watched the drama on my local TV station but it didn't pique my interest. One of my friends gave me the softcopy and I watched it for few weeks and rewatched it! It remains one of my fave shows now.

You're a patient person since you don't drop shows too soon and you're loyal to your fave actors/actresses. I don't drop shows too soon either, but no actor/actress will keep me if the story tanks.
"5a) 49 Days. I never been so glad to not drop this show." - Ah, I liked this show. I know at that time years ago, I was saying to myself that it was refreshing to have a logical ending instead of a happy-ever-after ending to the show. I was very pleased with it for that LOL!. I liked that the drama-verse remained consistent and understandable and that the coincidences made sense ultimately. :)

Still nothing interesting on the Korean front.
But for all of you resorting to Japanese dramas, I watched some good ones this week.
–Bijo to Danshi. Unfortunately this only available unsubbed. So, for some reason I watched it unsubbed. I missed a lot of details but also understood some. Story sees the lead character transferred to a tiny entertainment agency (with a promise of a better position in her original company at a later point). She encounters a bunch of loveable misfits there and then is sent out to cast someone off the street. And she finds this young guy, whom she clashes with at first but slowly they start caring for each other. The romance in this is quite subtle and not the focus of the drama – necessarily, as at the beginning the female lead is married. It's a really quite nice drama though, the characters are interesting and the problems they have are, for the most part, rather realistic. Just waiting for the final episode of the drama now...
–Tokyo Wankei. This is an oldie from 2004. Found it because after Bijo to Danshi I was looking for another drama with Nakama Yukie. It's Japanese, but the topic of the drama are Zainichi Koreans so it deals with interesting issues. I can't say I love everything about that drama – plenty of overused plot twists (too many at the end) and annoying secondary characters we've seen too often. And yet, it's a drama I would recommend: purely because the two leads. And some others of the supporting characters (the two "detectives") are great. And the male lead... he's perfect. Loved the personality they gave his character and Wada Soko looks gorgeous in this drama too.
Other than that: also watched most of Yasashii Jikan, which is a quite nice little drama – a bit slow at times. Made me realise that Ninomiya Kazunari is actually a pretty good actor. Somehow, of the Arashi boys it's only Matsujun and him that I can watch.
Waiting for episodes 37.5 no Namida.

Yasashii Jikan is interesting, I just wanted more focus on Ninomiya's character Taku – but it's more of an ensemble drama, about lots of little stories of the different characters with the main story tying it all together. But I could have had a drama centred on the main story entirely, since it was so tragic. And Ninomiya was just so good portraying how much his character was emotionally suffering... I wanted more than a few minutes of that in each episode. Even if some of the supporting character were great (the knitting grandpa, LOL!).
I just can't get into the other Arashi boys. Matsujun had me with his Momo-chan (Kimi wa Petto) and his performance in Smile was utterly compelling – one of the most underrated dramas IMO.

Matsujun is great in Kimi wa Petto! I first saw him in hana yuri dango, but kimi wa petto definitively made me a fan. I have yet to see Smile.
I have seen some of the other's dramas but yeah. I mean Aiba was cute enough in my girl, but not really the best actor. Neither is Sakurai. Which I suppose is why they rarely do it.

Ahhh, sorry for the formatting...
Forgot. Also tried Batsu Kare about a bunch of single people in their 30s (some divorced, some just single) but got bored of it really quickly. The drama synopsis describes the lead guy as somewhat of a loser but as a good guy, but I just thought he was a womanising jerk!
Also watched bits of Kuu Neru Futari Sumu Futari, but it's only partially subbed and I really wanted it fully subbed to not miss any of the details. It's got a simple story about a couple that has been living together for 8 years but isn't married yet. It's short episodes (30 minutes each) and split into half the episode showing her experience of a day, versus the other half being his perspective. Which is a kind of neat format. It's all about their misunderstandings, their desires, their fears, their insecurities. It tackles real issues (e.g. when they get stuck in rut about sex) – not something you see a lot in dramas! Bookmarked it, to go back to when it's fully subbed or when my Japanese is better!

Hi Everyone!
I hope you are all doing well. ....... Today is September 11th and I can only imagine that today is a truly sad day for so many people. *moment of silence*
On a different note, once again we're dealing with intense heat around here. ...... Had a 13 hour power outage yesterday, and I missed Kdrama-watching!
Watched this week:
Hwajeong - Wow, the new King is a little nutty. ...... But that new maid/concubine of his is really full of herself.
Yong-pal - Was only able to watch ep 5 this week, due to the power outage. ...... Nurse Hwang! Creepy and crazy.
Bad Man (Bad Guy) - Decided to pick something from my "To Watch Later List" and selected this. I had always heard about it, but never got around to watching it when it was airing. I'm up to ep 4. ..... Going in, I already know how it ends and all, but I want to watch it anyway. ...... Awesome soundtrack and scenes beautifully shot. ...... And Kim Nam-gil! I swear, he looks into the camera and a whole other atmosphere is immediately created.
That's it for now. ....... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

If you don't mind Japanese, I would recommend Boku no Ita Jikan, where the lead character learns one day that he has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).
I don't normally like terminal illness stories, but this is one of the few that worked for me. And it's also the one drama that made me change my mind about Haruma Miura. He doesn't impress me in most of his works (and most of projects aren't particularly of interest to me), but he really delivers in this one.

Hello beanies..
Quick question: I always wondering whenever there is a scene that involve prosecutor with search warrant. Can they really destroy everything in the house/office they search or is that just another exaggeration by kdramaland? Because mostly I think it doesn't help them find the evidence they need.
-THE GENIUS S4: The prize this season is really big that I have to take a look again at my screen. Waah, what's with the production team? That's so generous of them to give back the garnet the player lost during DM. It's basically twice the last season's prize. This MM is so much fun. Dongmin the human scales once more weigh all the product's value correctly. He even boldly choose his rival for DM with his final round decision. KH's strategy is a basic one, but it's good enough to make him win. Ah, that fateful 12 janggi is just epic. And I'm glad we'll see a different pair for final showdown. Bring it on, Show!!
We are less than a week away from She Was Pretty. Praying real hard that it will be one of the good drama this year.

Genius 4 and the 34 garnets - what a grand prize, indeed! I was rooting for the youngest player to go all the way, but alas, we have a formidable pair in the semi-finals which should be very exciting. I am still impressed by the woman who memorized the first 100 decimals of pi (for fun, she said). Wow, so much brain food in one room!

That is a hugely overused and false trope, both in Korean and American movies/shows. I guess it is for dramatic effect, but no real cops anywhere would ever do that. Perhaps they don't care about who they are making a mess of, but when you toss junk all over the place at random it makes it very hard to actually look for, you know.. evidence.

i know the death match this time was absolutely epic and I cannot wait for the finals! It's gonna be great :D
But is the prize really all that much? It's about a hundred thousand dollars I believe, and though that's a lot, it's nothing in comparison to the 1 million dollars they hand out on occasion in Who wants to be a millionaire, and that's in just one setting. Here the winner made it through all these grueling rounds it seems like a well earned reward

There must be a difference between money prizes in SK and US - I know on Hello Counselor the prize is worth 1000, but not cash. I'm sure there are articles out there about this online ~

Since a lot of us here are complaining about the lack of interesting dramas, let's talk about the one's we're anticipating/excited :D Here are mine
The Village: Achiara's Secret . The title caught my attention because it reminded me of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village and Kim Jae-wook was supposed to be in it. Sadly though, he's not but the plot is very intriguing. I'm hoping it's going to be a good psychological thriller/mystery and doesn't dwell too much on the romance. If there's gonna be romance, I just hope it's subtle and not too much in your face.
She Was Pretty. The teasers got to me! Absolutely adorable and funny. Hoping this would be a good rom-com.
Reply 1988. I absolutely loved Go Kyung-pyo and Park Bo-gum in Cantabile Tomorrow. Too see both again in another got me all excited.
That's mine :) How about you guys?

I'm not sure I'm excited about anything still.
I'll give The Village a try, because of Moonie and also our male lead, but it'll be the writing that will decide whether I watch the whole drama or not. It'll need to be tightly and carefully plotted, because then it could be fantastic.
Definitely not trying She Was Pretty. I can already see it's going for a kind of humour that I don't find particularly funny and I just can't take a drama seriously that thinks fluffing up someone's hair makes her ugly. No, it just means you send her to a hairdresser and after half an hour she'll looking like a star on the red carpet.

> I just can’t take a drama seriously that thinks fluffing up someone’s hair makes her ugly
Agreed. I was thinking maybe they could go for a more realistic or sophisticated approach, like she is just sad and frumpy and doesn't have confidence anymore. No hairdresser can fix that quickly. If it's just a mop hair I'll probably skip it too.

They did the same thing with Yoon Eun-Hye in Mirae-s Choice to make her look "ordinary" (or was it ugly? not sure) but I do agree. It's the same thing with American chick flicks or rom-com movies. The lead girl, plain and very ordinary, with the glasses becomes cute/pretty girl without them and suddenly everybody notices her.

They've done it in a lot of dramas – fluffy hair, glasses, ordinary rather than designer clothes, fatsuit. And every time all I see is still only an actress that, despite the fact that she is wearing a 80's style potato sack, is prettier than average.
What I would like is a drama with substance that addresses the issue of beauty – which people do have hang-ups about and do get discriminated for – realistically, but I don't think I've yet come across one.

I agree that fluffy hair doesn't make a girl ugly. (In fact, around my way, that's a good thing! biased natural speaking) But they couldn't cast an actual "ugly" person though. Because a)welcome to k-ent b)that would step on even more toes even if it was better for plot legitimacy.

It's not just kdramas that do a sad job making a supposedly "ugly" actress look unattractive. I see it a lot in Hollywood movies too. There was a recent movie called DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) where the girl was not even close to ugly.
I think because women are so judged on their looks, you don't see a truly unattractive looking woman on the screen. I already knew that's what was going to happen here and I've learned to really suspend belief when it comes to that so it doesn't bother me at all.

Cheese in The Trap and Reply 1988.
Don't have a lot to say about CIIT. I don't know the source material, but it seems really interesting. Also, the cast is pretty!!
Reply 1988 because I also loved Go Kyung-pyo and Park Bo-gum in Tomorrow Cantabile. If they are going to use the same formula of "husband game" if will be hard to choose a favorite, but since the drama hasn't started yet, I hope Go Kyung-pyo is the male lead (aka SPOILER the girl childhood friend)
Something that I'm wondering is how it will be convincing that they kept the same young face during 27 years, since it is the longest time since the present if compared to the other Reply series. It was already hard to believe that Eunji was 33 and Go Ara was 39 in the "present time".

I have a question, but some background first, my next K-Toon is going to be a parody of those dramas that a bunch of hot, young (or young-ish) men fall for an average looking female lead.
I need about 4 or 5 male leads. (And I haven't cast the female lead yet.) Suggestions?
Thanks. (You guys are an excellent resource for me. )

Ji Soo, as a shy office nerd (against the type?)
Choi Woo Shik as the guy everyone loves but actually has a hidden nasty side and is a chauvinist at heart
Lee Soo Hyuk who does what need be but never anything more, like only the minimum of gentlemanly and then whatever, go home. Like a totally indifferent guy
Yoo Seung Ho as the player and cheating cheater
Jeo Jin Gu as the overdramatizing emotional guy, a worrywart

Thanks. This is a good suggestion, but I'm parodying the hard working, plain girl who seems to have tons of hot guys falling for her--think My Lovely Samsoon, and there are tons of others, I just can't think of them right now. So she's going to have to be a little mild/mousie quiet type.
HOWEVER, I do recognize what you said in the first comment you made in Open Thread. OFTEN my characters don't do what I am trying to write/make them do. (I know you sympathize.)

You know this is top secret, but I am actually thinking of taking a course on screenwriting in the Baltic Film and Media school. Though it is about 90 hours alltogether so I am not sure where to find the time.
but yeah, if I go Wag-a Muffin way with the female character. then hard working. there are plentyful ways to make it a parody and hilarious. Like have her do... kindergarten teacher + someone who irons clothes in a factory + riksha driver + phone sex (during other jobs, with headphones). Really hardworking girl. also she could walk pets (dogs, cats, iguanas, giraffes, etc.)

I'm going to fan-girl like mad over your project for casting my oppa lol.
If you are looking for an actress who can do the mild/mousie quiet type then may I suggest Park Bo-young. She can also play the opposite if needed. If she is a little too pretty for what you have in mind then I'd suggest Moon Geun Young. She is pretty but not too pretty and that's why she was able to play a young boy convincingly in Painter of the wind.
For your leading men: Song Joon-Ki, Jung Kyung-Ho, Yoo Ah-In, Kim Rae-Won will not disappoint if you are looking for young and solid actors who can do romance, bromance or whatever.

Still found nothing worth watching :(
Usually, K-drama is very distinctly escapism for me, as it is -- on any possible dimension -- unconnected with my life. And for more than a decade, my weakness for K-drama has been a reliable source of amusement and ridicule for my wife and my family. My mother is the only other member of my extended family with any "ties" to Korea, in her case: missionary work in North Korea (don't tell anyone, I'm pretty sure that was illegal).
Now this week, I met with my older sister, whose spouse is working on editing of the translation of a graphic novel. There is one long chapter in which Joh, the oldest son of the protagonist family goes to Seoul to try to help his father's company with its struggle on the Korean market. The story focusses mostly on Joh's close friend Seul-bi, who returns to Korea for the first time after 6 years in Germany.
Apparently, my sister thinks that watching too many K-dramas turned me into some expert on Korean-ness and asked for help on a few things in that specific chapter.
Anyway, the chapter has a rather awkward title, "Homecoming in Late Autumn" (it made a little bit more sense in the original). I was trying to come up with a few alternatives and was surprised when I googled "Seoul Seeking". I expected tons of sites exploiting that inviting and cheap pun, but there was really only one result doing that: a little humans-of-seoul/EXO crossover fanfic. This is something I would never have looked at if I stumbled across it in any other way: http://pinkbit.livejournal.com/25553.html

He's so underrated. I Remember You was the first Seo In-guk drama that I saw in full but I caught a couple of episodes of High School King of Savy and you can see how much he puts in his character. He was believable as a teenager and as a genius profiler. Even his IRY cast mates thought he was jerk when they first met him at the script reading. But it was just him portraying Lee Hyun.
As for your SIG needs and IRY withdrawal, check this site https://seoinguk.wordpress.com/. Loads of BTS there.

Mister X's subs can also be a bit frustrating for someone with English as a 3rd language like me. I had to keep a dictionary by my side before watching a drama that he's subbing lol. I remember dropping one because I literally had to stop and play many times just look up the meaning of some big words he was using lol. It was totally way over my head.
I think he kind of tone it down with Shin Don because I didn't have any problem understanding it.
I have to thank him and Jung Ha-Yeon for my sageuk addiction lol. I have been fan-girling over Jung for years before I made the connection later that he has been the writer of most of my favorite sageuks.
I was looking through some old comments on Empress Ki threads the other day and I was surprised at the amount of fan-girling I did over Jung and Shin Don. I didn't realize what a jerk I was on this blog when it comes to sageuks. I would make sarcastic comments about new sageuks that doesn't have Jung's name on it.
I am seriously trying to stay away from Six Flying Dragons threads because I can't help being a critical jerk on it and it's very annoying to the fans who are sincerely looking forward to it.
I think I'm really frustrated at the lack of good sageuks these days and the lack of good dramas period.

@Kiara. Yeah, I can see how they would be hard if English weren't your first language. Since English is my first language, I'm really amused by his subs because they're full of colorful words and phrases you'll find nowhere else on the planet, even actual middle English texts. But if his subs were in Spanish (my second language), I'm pretty sure they'd be totally beyond me, even with a dictionary.
Lol I wouldn't blame yourself for making fun of Empress Ki. From everything I've heard, the writers of that drama were on crack, and any comparison with Shin Don is going to make it look really, really bad. I'm still so attached to the characters/performances in Shin Don that I get upset just reading about the craziness in dramas like Empress Ki, or Faith, and I haven't seen a single minute of either of them.
I'm frustrated by the lack of good sageuk too. I wish Jung Ha-yeon were 40 instead of 70 haha. I'm with you on staying away from the 6FD threads, all the more because the promos are really turning me off. I just can't deal with the idea of a young, sexy Lee Bang-won in love with some kind of Candy girl. Like, they do realize that he was a power-hungry, blood-thirsty man who killed his dad's BFFs and his own brothers? Imo he's not a suitable subject for a slick, modern, history-free sageuk--his legacy is just too complicated. Oh how I wish Tears of the Dragon had English subs...

I Live in Cheongdam-dong is just delightful, isn't it? Kim Hye-ja has this comic sensibility unlike anyone I've seen before. Her delivery, her facial expressions...everything's just perfect! I'm just happy to see the subbers still working at it, slowly but surely. I'm more concerned about whether the rest of the episodes will be uploaded...

I'm so glad that Viki has decided to undertake this show. I thought I wasn't ever going to find it subbed.
I previously had seen Kim Hye-ja in Unkind Women. She has a knack for comedy. Her lies are preposterous. I plan on watching her in the film, Mother, hopefully sometime in the near future.

I had intended to watch some stuff from my back log since while nothing currently airing was on my radar. I ended up starting Ugly Alert which I had been curious about before but stayed away from because of length. Im Ju hwan being the lead gave me a nudge, and I find I know most of the main cast from something or other. I watched the first 10 episodes primarily in one sitting. Has anyone who's seen it like to cry with me? Does it stay good or am I wasting my time?

If I recall correctly, the first 10 episodes are mostly just the tear-jerker backstory, right?
The actual show is a bit more family/slice-of-lifey drama, but you will still have ample opportunity for release of excess lachrymal fluid.
For a daily drama, production values, plot writing and dramatic composition show surprisingly good quality. It gets much slower now of course ...

RE: Freaky coincidence? Real Life vs Kdrama (End of the World)
On 9/8 Tues, I settled down to start watching JTBC 2013
series recommended by HeadsNo2 as a good one to catch. It has been on my watchlist since I read her 2013 year in review. Due to a dearth of weekday dramas that attracted my attention, I watched Ep 1 of 'The End of World' and found the premise of a virus that is be spread by a carrier to be interesting thinking that this was like the MERS case that struck SK earlier in the year.
On 9/9 afternoon, while eating lunch and catching up on the news, I came upon the following article about how scientists are trying to re-animate a prehistoric virus found in the melting perma-frost in the Artic.
http://news.yahoo.com/frankenvirus-emerges-siberias-frozen-wasteland-142859117.html
I guess perma-frost is not so permanent these days of rising temperatures. Scary stuff this!
That evening as I continued to watch Eps 2 and 3 - I was FLOORED by the developing plot of the drama as it eerily echoed what i just read in the yahoo article, although the re-animation of prehistoric virus in the drama was accidental.
I was thoroughly freaked out by coincidental timing of watching the drama and reading the article. It just made the plausibility of what happened in the drama so much more real!
'The End of World' was supposed to have been a 20 episode series cut down to 12 due to low ratings. It stars Yoon Je Moon who fans of the 'Last' drama know as 'Straw Cutter' - Seoul Station #2 gangster.
I bet if JTBC re-broadcast 'The End of the World' in the near future - it will get better public reception.
The plot is just WOW and so far after 5 episodes, I am still captivated by this drama.
Thanks to HeadsNo2 for recommending this in her 2013 review!

I'm usually not into disaster movies and dramas but "The end of the world" won me over. It's like not liking war movies until "Comrades" came along and changed my mind.
Yoon Je-Moon was pretty good in Tree With Deep Roots too. I love him when he plays a good guy and totally scared of him when he plays the opposite. He is such a great actor.
I'm not sure what his role is in the upcoming movie "Three Summer Night" the Korean version of the "Hangover" but I want to watch it just because he is in it.

Happy weekend beanies!
I was having seminary 3days in a row this weekend and suddenly thinking how if 3days I spent on abused myself for K-drama. Lol.
Wonder, how many K-dramas have you guys watched in your entire life? You know how much time we've wasted on that? Lmao. Maybe just write the numbers, and put some memorable dramas in your life.
I was quite shock tbh about my record :
*I loose count but if cut from 2009-2015, I already watched around 40 dramas? Mostly 20eps, and as I remember only 2/3 dramas with 30-50eps.
So roughly I've spent 800-1000ish hours for drama?! (Not included Taiwanese/US shows)
Most memorable (not particularly a good drama haha): Playful kiss, Gentleman's Dignity, Mary Stays All Night, Dream High.

Missing OT last week because I somewhat became a tour guide for Korean students studying here in my city (in case you're wondering, no, I don't speak Korean). They speak my language (why else would they want to study here anyway?) But they speak sooo formally, like a flight announcer in airport. Which makes me think twice because I had to speak (very) formally too, and it's hard because most words in my language's daily conversations are made up of informal words that sometimes don't sound like the formal forms at all.
Nevertheless, it was very interesting! I managed to fangirl with them (Kang Dong Won!) and they're more than pleased to see how I & my friend knows Korean culture. They're so lovely!
Still pretty much drama-less, since I had to work on my graduating paper. Gosh, 3 years fly by sooo quickly!

Greetings fellow beanies,
I've only been watching k-dramas for about a year, but lately it feels I can't get past the first 7 or 8 episodes of a drama without dropping it (some temporarily, though the majority I never bother to pick up again). Most often it's because there's something about the story, plot, or characters/characterization that I find lacking - too many plot holes/inconsistencies, a lack of clear story direction, heroes/heroines with whom I can't identify, etc. I usually do my best to overlook the minor flaws, but as I've said, recently even the little things bother me to a point where I figure the drama probably isn't worth watching anymore.
Some recent examples are Heard it Through the Grapevine and Oh My Ghostess. The thing about both of these dramas is that I initially loved them; the writing was strong, and I felt they featured realistic (-ish) characters that I found easy to root for. However, about 11/12 episodes into Grapevine, and 9/10 into OMG, my interest began to wane. Grapevine's biggest flaw was the never-ending heroine-vs-evil-in-laws conflict. It was draggy and repetitive, and the childish (and persistent) nature of the dislike the parents had for their daughter-in-law, while funny at first, made me itch for some change of pace or character growth later on.
With OMG, it was the lack of Bong-sun during some pretty critical moments, and Soon-ae's apparent disregard for Bong-sun's life outside of her own needs. I'm sure the show deals with these issues in later episodes, and I probably would of kept watching otherwise, but another thing I couldn't get behind was the romance. While I loved Chef with Bong-sun, I also loved him with Soon-ae, and it felt like it was Soon-ae who got to experience all the swoony pre-relationship stuff that we love to see rather than Bong-sun. Sure in the end, Bong-sun's the one that Chef truly loves (though I found myself doubting this quite a bit), and the one who I'm sure ends up with him. For me though, it doesn't quite feel wholly believable to have it play out that way.
Producers and Pinocchio are another two that fall into this category. It's funny, because when I first began watching dramas, none of these kinds of things bothered me at all. I watched anything and everything that seemed remotely interesting, including some pretty mediocre stuff (Personal Taste, My Princess). I dunno, I guess over time you begin to develop a sense of what's good and what's not-so-good, and once you've experienced good (like Misaeng, which will always have a special place in my heart, and Healer to name a newer one), everything else seems meh in comparison.

with Grapevine, I found the characters a lot more nuanced than what you've described, but that's after watching all 30 episodes.
On the surface it looks like a standard Cinderella-vs-evil-inlaws story, but unlike most kdramas, you get to see Bom (Go Ah-sung's character) actively trying to mould herself to fit into that world and win their approval, while also occasionally being in danger of becoming the thing she fears, and then realising that some things can't be fought. It's the same with her in-laws, who are terrible snobs from Day 1 but also (especially her mother-in-law) have moments of softening and seeing her as an ally, while still seeing her as 'lesser' because of her class.
So while it's not a typical kdrama kind of character development, there most definitely is a progression there.

I agree about Grapevine. It's actually one of the most progressive and interesting takes on class warfare I've seen in Kdrama. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed the in-laws the most of all the characters, though, but I found them hilarious the whole way through. Watching such sheltered, privileged snobs try (and fail) to maintain the appearance of liberality was such a refreshingly modern perspective on class, imo.

Yeah, no I partially agree. I probably should have mentioned that it's still one of the better dramas I've watched (I loved Go-ah Sung's character, and almost all of the supporting cast). My issue was the length of that particular conflict. I suppose it may be because it's longer than the typical kdrama, and had more air-time to fill?
Even before episodes 11/12, you could already sense the mother-in-law's (slight) change in attitude towards Bom, though there were plenty of instances where she went back and forth between hating her and admiring here. That grew tedious for me, but I knew that if I kept watching I would probably see some more development. I just couldn't bother.

I thought MIL's inner conflict was one of the most telling parts of the story. Like she 'wanted" to change into a normal person, but in the end simply could not face giving up all her biases and prejudices.

Grapevine kind of broke the mold for k-dramas, and while it did get a bit draggy in the middle, it is well worth finishing. The ending is not what you would expect nor predict.

Breaking the mold is a dangerous thing. People know what to expect from the "seducing your mother-in-law" plot line, because they have seen it hundreds of times. Disappointing expectations is not very pleasant.

Exactly. The drama isn't framed in terms of the usual things kdramas choose to focus on - yes, we have a young couple but they've zoomed right past the romance and babymaking into marriage (and again, it's rare that we get to see young protagonists who are actually in a functional relationship through most of the drama rather than getting there or trying not to get there the way most kdramas do).
Same with the in-laws, Bom wants to win their approval but they aren't going to magically become better people as a result of her influence, or accept her easily. She has a minefield to negotiate there, and the drama doesn't let you forget it.

Scholar and Oh My Ghostess? afaik neither of those dramas altered their plotlines as per fan demand – the only influence the fans/public had on Scholar was in getting Jin Se-yeon booted from consideration as leading lady and replaced with Lee Yubi. And the addition of Ryu Young-jae as co-writer in the second half.
And I think most of us would agree that both of those are positive changes. I mean, SWWTN had its faults, but imagine how much worse it would have been with Jin Se-yeon's constipated face as Yang-sun. Netizens might still have complained about Lee Yubi, and I admit she is imperfect, but she is a thousand times better than the alternative. And as for the plodding, romance-only Let's Find The Book first half of Scholar......thank god for the co-writer addition, is all I can say.

I didn't mean the final choice of the female lead. On the contrary she was quite good. I mean comments like "don't ruin the manga", as if we're talking about Dostoevsky, the voting about which actress looks like the manga heroine (in mangas all girls look... white), the complaining about the music, the change of writers, the lack of any "gothic", dark element crucial to any vampire show that respects itself, the "randomly" chosen cast and a project with no overall consistent philosophy made off an unfinished manga.

hey Kiara, glad you liked Grapevine! It's hands down the best drama of this year imo, unless we get another shocker from cable or something. I think what it did differently from other kdramas was stripping the predictability right out of the plot - there are no guarantees that our 'good guys' will end up happy, or even together - it was just cynical enough to raise the other possibility.
And Go Ah-sung is fantastic - makes me wish she did dramas more frequently than once in five years! I think she only had a small role in Beauty Inside but the real one to watch will be her movie with Im Shi-wan.....both are insanely talented and I can't wait to see them together.

Hi everyone,
last day of my vacation - made cheese for the first time and waxed it last night to age until Christmas (that was by far the most fun step). The kind we made is called Guido - a newer Italian cheese that easy with good results especially for beginners. It was a great project and I plan on making another batch when I get back.
Remembering 9/11. Always.
Finishing up Faith with my brother - this turned out to be a good drama to watch with someone. For me, there are alone-viewing dramas and dramas to watch with someone else. I like the ability, or should I say power, to ff, rewind, or pause where I want to, or curl up with tissues or laugh so ridiculously out of control, or shout at the screen in my privacy. Now that I think of it, I only watch kdramas I've already seen, and rewatch it with someone else when it's their first time. So I guess I have subconsciously screened which one I want to watch with another person, and also gear it toward what I think they might like, too. At least that's the dynamics of sharing kdramas with my family so far. Do you have dramas you would definitely watch only alone?
have a great weekend!

Hi beanies,
I've been noticing that there's something about the way romances in kdramas are depicted that puts me off. A lot of the time, this can be attributed to the ultra-cheesy soundtrack that accompanies 'romantic' moments (usually a combination of ballads and super-slow love songs that I'm sure the producers/directors/whomever thinks adds to the romantic atmosphere, but in fact does the opposite), the way skin-on-skin contact, like wrist grabs (bleh) and hugs, is sometimes depicted in slow motion or, even worse, multiple times from multiple different angles (why this is even considered necessary is beyond me), and the ridiculously dramatic pauses that follow in the seconds after a character says something romantic.
In a way, I guess this stuff is part of what makes kdramas charming. You don't find these kinds of things in American dramas (mostly?), and it's stuff you can overlook, laugh about, maybe even appreciate from time to time. (On a side note: one thing I can't seem to get over is kdrama kisses. Why are they so bad? This is less of an issue nowadays, but there are still plenty of kisses that come off as cold and dull and cringey. Is it because of censoring? Is it because this is what they consider romantic? Is this how young koreans actually think kissing is done? So many questions.)
Like I said, these are things I can put aside (sometimes). What really bothers me is the way relationships are developed. I really hate it when feelings come out of nowhere ("What...what is this feeling in my chest? Could it-could it be that I like...?" Really? You have two conversations with a person you don't really know, and you come to this conclusion? I mean, it's possible, but...really?) or when all it takes is one little gesture from the hero or heroine to completely change the way the other thinks about them. This is why I have a love-hate relationship with love-hate romance dramas. While I love the premise, the transition from hate to love is often poorly done. There are exceptions, of course, though I can't think of one atm.
I prefer dramas in which the characters begin with little knowledge/care about the other's existence. It's especially nice when neither expect anything from one another, and you watch two strangers become acquaintances or allies, then friends, etc.. I Remember You and Healer are good examples of where I felt the allies-friends-lovers formula really worked.
Then there are, of course, dramas like The Time I've Loved You, where the characters start off as friends, and you watch them do all the cute friends-to-lovers stuff without any actual development of the relationship, or even a decent understanding of why they mean so much to each other. To be honest, I don't even think Won and Hana even have that deep of a relationship. This is another issue with some dramas in general - they show us all the cutesy romance stuff, like dates and hand-holding, without showing us WHY we should care about...

I don't think it's straight out censoring per se, but a mixture of TV conventions and cultural norms. I don't think Korea is quite as liberal as some other parts of the world in terms of public display of affection, but there is also conservatism in terms of what is shown on TV, especially if it's not cable. Shows sometimes self-censor on the basis of viewer complaints.
In some cases, it seems, it also the preference of the actor involved (most likely to preserve a certain kind of image of innocence and purity). My impression is that this normally is a preference on the part of female actors, but just about never on the part of male actors.
If you watch Korean films, you'll quickly realise that Koreans, male and female, and young ones, are not virginal beings that do not know how to kiss, quite the contrary. You'll also see a lot more taboo issue tackled in a much more direct manner than you will on TV.
<To be honest, I don’t even think Won and Hana even have that deep of a relationship. This is another issue with some dramas in general – they show us all the cutesy romance stuff, like dates and hand-holding, without showing us WHY we should care about…
Totally agree. I think Won and Hana's relationship was nowhere near as good as they thought it was. (And I still think their love for each other was not healthy. Putting your love life on quasi-hold for 17 years b/c of one person... is only obsessive.) And yes, there's often a lot of superficial cutesy romance stuff, but very little to show us the substance of the relationship.

It's interesting that you mention "image," because it's always something that I've found strange. I've heard of actors/actresses turning down roles in fear of it ruining a certain image that they've maintained throughout their career. As an actor/actress, I would assume that they'd want to take on roles that challenge them as an actor/actress, or that redefine the way audiences look at them. I mean, though I loved Im Si Wan in Misaeng, and a part of me will always think of him as Jang Geu Rae, I wouldn't want him to turn down a role where he plays some gritty, gun-wielding drug dealer because it would ruin the image he has going for him.
I don't know if this says more about the movie/TV industry in Korea, or more about the audiences. I know that fans there seem to be a lot more attached to celebrities and what goes on in their daily lives, and I could understand that if an actor had gained most of his fans by playing innocent, sweet-guy roles, he could be hesitant to step outside of that.

I would think one great things about being an actor would be to try out all kinds of roles (play totally evil! What fun!), but quite a few actors seem to play it just safe.
I'm guessing it comes down to both industry and audiences, and perhaps which agency manages you. And possibly personal background (e.g. if someone's very religious?). And personality... because some of the best actors just don't care very much about these things at all, but they just do any roles they want to do. Bae Doona comes to mind...

I think a lot of us feel that way about the phony setups for romances in k-dramas. But it seems to be a fixture even in the best of them.
I think the real problem is that a lot of the writers and directors are simply unable to think outside the box. and those scenes have become such a fixture that they are included without any real thought. I keep hoping for the better, but not much luck.

Me too. I keep hoping a drama will come along that will reinvent the romance genre, or at least set a new bar for what's considered acceptable and what's considered outdated. There have been a few of dramas in the past year or so - like Misaeng, Grapevine, oh my ghostess, and Hogu's love - that I feel weren't afraid to step outside of kdrama conventions (for the most part) and ended up being relatively successful (especially in the cases of Misaeng and Ghostess). I hope we'll get some more diversity in the dramas in the coming seasons.

Korean people definitely mess around the same way people from any country do. The TV norms are just less graphic than US TV. Back then on US TV you couldn't show a couple in bed together, for example (even fully clothed). These things do slowly change. If it annoys you a lot I would suggest watching Korean movies instead. They have more graphic sex, violence, coarse language, etc.

It is not the "messing around" part that bugs me. It is that it seems most OTP's cannot start a relationship without some gimmick - tripping, falling, or other forced skinship. They never have what I would call a "normal" beginning.

Oh I hate it when they give us multiple angles on the kiss. And they always pick such sappy ballads.
I think the main problem too is that there's a particular litany of interactions that can occur in trendy romances, and inevitably dramas will just pick any number of them, go down an assembly line of OTP checkpoints and manufacture paper-thin stereotypes to act this all out. No one is trying to tell a story anymore. So when you're watching these things, everything is forced and calculated, and you might as well forget about spontaneity or sincerity. Instead of working for it, they'll try to manipulate an emotional reaction out of you by musical cues, wrist grabs, camera zoom-ins, etc.
It's amazing what a little emotional honesty and different storytelling priorities will get you, though. My Name is Kim Sam-soon is a classic example--sure, it's loaded with tropes, but it wasn't trying to lure viewers with kisses or piggybacks, etc, it was trying to say something about growing old, about relationships, about loving yourself first. Another example is Alone in Love, which did a wonderful job with love-hate relationships...although in that case we were dealing with a divorced couple finding their way back to each other, as opposed to two strangers turning into petty, antagonistic five-year-olds whenever they see each other.

... the romance at all.
I realize I sound a little pessimistic, but all I really want is good romance drama that doesn't make me feel like reaching into my screen and strangling the characters/writings/production team. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure whether it's based on a similar sentiment, but I, too, struggle with the constraints of the K-drama romance schema.
Last week I vented about the always same shallow physical contact script that drives the romance plot.
I cannot stop rolling my eyes on the "heart-beat" scene, where the 30something-year-old stuck-up chaebol jerkass grabs his left breast and utters "why is my heart beating so fast?" (bonus points for a heart-beat sound effect in the background with a heart-rate of 72 bpm.)
A huge number of romance plots seem to indicate that "fated" physical attraction is identical to love: Without the involuntary hand touch/accidental kiss, the two of them would still hate each other.

Or as a companion piece to that heart thing, when a 30 year old girl panics and almost faints at the site of a guy without a shirt on.
I have seen a couple of recent shows that avoided that tired cliche, but both are still way to common. It is like they are writing middle-teen love novels but aiming at the 30+ market.

Btw. I'm not entirely against those cliches. Both, heart-beat scene and shirtless stun, where used to great effect by the Hong Sisters in "Best Love"/"You're beautiful" because they managed to not take it seriously and put it in a ridiculous context.

Yes, because no Korean girl has ever a) had male siblings b) been to the beach.

It's not easy to get this right, though.
During the "allies"-stage, the exterior pressure to make them allies can be problematic. The transition to the "friends"-stage is very risky, as you need to be very cautious with your romantic chemistry (otherwise the friendship thing gets tainted with hypocrisy).
Sometimes, the stages themselves are too static: Crisis -> ally phase: couple tries to solve crises -> single event leads to them becoming friends -> friendship phase -> single event leads to them becoming lovers -> lover script.

Suggestions for good romance dramas...
Alone in Love--my vote for best romance drama. Son Ye-jin is lovely in this, and Kam Woo-sung isn't bad himself. The description (it's about a divorced couple who hasn't gotten over each other) and promotional poster might seem a bit alienating and/or pretentious, but the drama itself is very approachable and heartfelt. It's as much warm and funny as it is insightful and realistic, and probably has the best, most human cast of side characters you'll meet in one of these things (plus the most adorable side couple of all time).
Ruler of Your Own World--the trendy to end all trendies. Great soundtrack, immense performances, profound themes, you name it, it's got it.
Secret Love Affair--A flawed but classy drama that has everything your id would want in an adultery drama--older career woman trapped in a loveless marriage of convenience (so the moral implications of adultery are sidestepped), meets passionate, young starving artist. Sparks fly (they really do--the chemistry is great). It's not as well-developed thematically as A Wife's Credentials or Heard it Through the Grapevine, and the musical side of things isn't all that well-done, but it's a great commentary on growing old, midlife crises, age differences in relationships, and so on. Anyway, if you're there for the romance, you're in good hands.
My Name is Kim Sam-soon--speaks for itself. Chances are, you've already seen this one, but if you haven't you know you'll end up watching it at some point haha. It's got a lot of hype, but it's still a great drama.
Que Será, Será--dark, intense romantic melodrama. Jung Yoo-mi is great in this, and the directing is very stylish. It's very well-developed thematically, dealing with how money effects romance--you could think of it as a Candy drama with a pulse, but none of the old rules apply, and while I might not agree with its conclusions, it's got a lot to say about class, money, power, love, etc.
The Princess's Man--a bit of an outlier, but this drama is as much a romance as it is a sageuk. Romeo-and-Juliet romance with actual, believable life-and-death stakes. Lyrical soundtrack, great handling of female characters, allowing them agency within historical conditions of possibility. Also features an amazing performance from Hong Soo-hyun, who's one half of a compelling side couple. (fair warning: it stars Park Si-hoo. If you're uncomfortable with him as a romantic lead I wouldn't watch it.)
What's Up, Fox?--also by Kim Do-woo, who wrote MNIKSS. The female lead is a bit too dim for my tastes, but give it a try if you're at all interested in a) noona romances, b) age difference relationships of all kinds, and c) a refreshingly honest and open take on female sexuality (as opposed to pretending it doesn't exist, like most dramas).
Tamra, the Island--this should not have been as good as it was. It seems like it should be another trendy set in Joseon, but it's so much...

...so much more than that. It helps that Im Joo-hwan and Seo Woo have a lot more to offer than most trendy stars do, but both their characters are fully fleshed out, their romance runs the gamut of adorable, poignant and moving (it helps that the obstacles are real, and both have desires and problems that go far beyond each other). Wasn't a huge fan of the second half (for reasons that had very little to do with the episode cut), but the first half was a joy to watch.

Please fill in the blanks ( _ _ _ ) or select an answer.
1) I choose to begin watching a show mostly because …
d) combination of a and b
2) I usually drop a series …
a) in the beginning like after 1-4 episodes because I can tell if the story or characters aren't clicking for me by the 3rd-4th episode.
Often I don't drop a show entirely but skim through the rest of the episodes.
3) If you answered 2a) and 2b) please name a few of the shows you dropped.
Recently:
High Society - flat
TTILY - flat although pretty
Last - I will go back and finish this though. I think that after the (imo incredible) Beautiful Bride, the story felt a little lackluster. It can matter what one watches before I think.
4) Although a show is disappointing …
a) I may not/don’t drop it because I like the actor/s - or find individual scenes charming enough to look for.
5) Of the shows that I considered dropping but did not or that I later started watching again …
a) I’m glad I did not give up the following shows because
Hwajung - just needed to find a new rhythm without the gravitas of CSW
There have also been several dramas that I had issues with on the first viewing, that clicked the second viewing.
Warm and Cozy - there were parts of this drama that I would not have wanted to miss. I liked the second romance with the diving lady, and I liked the Mayor's antics. I'm still baffled by how much potential went unrealized though.
Producers - lost me at some point but I ended up enjoying it a lot after a short break and going back.
6b) I do not have any background in dramas/movies/theatre

Thanks @ rarelyposts
"Often I don’t drop a show entirely but skim through the rest of the episodes." - I may do this too. At least if DB is recapping, I can choose to read what I missed and decide if I want to watch again.
3) If you answered 2a) and 2b) please name a few of the shows you dropped.
"Last – I will go back and finish this though. I think that after the (imo incredible) Beautiful Bride, the story felt a little lackluster. It can matter what one watches before I think." - Yes, several of us experienced that phenomenon after shows we liked and which were quite good, such as Healer and I Remember You ended. It was a 'Healer-ruined-us' syndrome for those who like Healer :D Very hard to accept another show after that high point.
"4) Although a show is disappointing …
a) I may not/don’t drop it because I like the actor/s – or find individual scenes charming enough to look for." - Wow.... to be able to find those individual scenes is tantamount to needle in haystack search-viewing! LOL! Using the FFD button is likely to result in missing those gems.
"Warm and Cozy – there were parts of this drama that I would not have wanted to miss. I liked the second romance with the diving lady, and I liked the Mayor’s antics. I’m still baffled by how much potential went unrealized though." - Great pity... this show and TTILY. Potential down the drain so unnecessarily.

When I was a kdrama newbie, I pretty much only watched melodramas...because they were, I guess, what made up the majority of dramas back then?? What I liked back then I may not watch or like now, but I DO remember I enjoyed these. Forgive me if the exact translation of these titles may be off... I'm not Korean, so my spelling is pretty shitte, too.
- Doctor Brothers (??) ...starring Lee Young-Ae, from Da Jang Geum and the guy from Gentleman's Dignity.
- Piano...starring, I think, the lead actress from Gentleman's Dignity.
- Glass Slipper... the lead actress seemed to be very very popular at the time; she preceded Choi Ji Woo in popularity, I think.. I remember liking the actress who played her sister, as well.

@Selma-
The kissing in the older dramas is because of censorship. There were rules that they couldn't have more than X number of seconds of bodily contact. I heard an interview with Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won that their kissing scenes in Secret Garden had to get special permission because they were too long/suggestive.
They also rate the level of sexuality expressed, nudity or skinship required. Obviously the rules here have been relaxed in the past year.
Of course Koreans know how to kiss (just go to Urban Dictionary and look at all the terms with "Korean" in them--they are all sexual). They even know how to film great kisses. I think it had to do with the censorship and maybe also with the experience level of the people involved with filming kisses/skinship.
As for making it look romantic... What I miss is cuddling. They go straight from hand holding to major kiss to "imagination." I think that's why you liked Healer. Lots of cuddling for that couple. It came off as very sweet. (Lots of cuddling in Secret Garden too, although it came off as weird because he was supposed to be "taming an alley cat".)
I don't know if that helps you. I know it has helped me to avoid those shows that are not to my taste. Just like American TV--I have seen but one episode of "How I Met Your Mother", but I know it was a big hit. I'd rather watch rereuns of "Northern Exposure" where everything is more refined and maturely discussed.

"Healer cuddling"
Oh yes! Healer followed the romance schema to some point (accidental skinship, cheesy soundtrack all included), but the cuddling sequence was a very great break from it. Two people who displayed believable attraction and affection for each other. In a K-drama.

Just popping in the check out the conversation. I'm only watching All About My Mom right now. Some gratuitous partial nudity from the guys this week. That is something new for a weekend family drama. What is with this whole "Guardian" thing in K-dramas?
In many dramas, especially anything involving a hospital, the subject of "guardian" come up. It is also a big deal in Yong Pal, where apparently the evil brother is the "guardian".
But why would an adult need a guardian? Is this just a k-drama thing, or is it real in Korea?
Or is it not really translating correctly, and should perhaps be "next of kin"?
Required fields are marked *
Jon G.
September 11, 2015 at 11:28 AM
There are a few reasons why an adult might have a legal guardian: mental issues, self-endangerment for example. The guardian of a person who is considered suicidal might even decide to ignore the expressed wishes of the person him/herself to some degree.
The normal hospital guardian thingy in K-drama seems to have two major functions: (a) making decisions when a patient is not conscious and (b) paying the bills.

September 11, 2015 at 11:44 AM
They have it in Jdramas too.
It also seems, at least in Jdramas, the guardian/next of kin, is often told information that the patient itself is not. From what I understand that is normal, though it seems bizarre to me!

Well, before 1991, Korean hospitals didn't supply basic nursing for patients (only medical nursing). "Guardians" had to make sure that patients were provided with food, help them to the toilet, clean them and so on. Without a guardian, a patient who was unable to eat, clean himself, go to toilet would have been in trouble.
I was somehow convinced that this Korean Neo-Confucian system has been changed to a more Western one in recent decades.

But they never really touch on the legal guardian part, with a few exceptions, like where the person is unconscious. The bills part I can sort of see, but it almost seems like if you don't have a guardian, you will die in the hospital.

I nearly forgot: I watched Last, of course. It's a great show, I'm still not emotionally committed, and I have a question:
Spoiler
Why did Tae-ho have a break down when he "learned" about who actually was behind the backstabbing in the stock-manipulation screw up in the first episode?
What did Tae-ho learn there about Heung-sam that made him reconsider? Because I don't really see it.
Not only should he have known about it much earlier, it also changes absolutely nothing about his knowledge of Heung-sam. It shouldn't make a difference, but it definitely doesn't explain his 180 degree heel turn. (Not to mention, from a meta PoV, it renders Ryu's idiot sacrifice even more idiotic.)

Hi all:
Let's see.
I'm really enjoying Virtual Daughter-in-law. Yes it's predictable and cheesy but it hits the sweet spot of gooey smile-inducing romance. This is the only weekday drama that actually elicits an emotional response from me. I actually get peeved at some of the characters here and also ...yep that aforementioned gooey feeling.
Yong Pal. Ah, drama, why am i so patient with some of your over-the-top silliness? Perhaps because i'm hooked or maybe i just want to finish it since i started it. But Joo Won is so cute! So might be shallowness on my part. Am glad minion turned. It's hard to turn a minion but when they turn, they turn.
All about my Mom. CEO Mom is the sanest mom i've seen in ages. Let's hope she doesn't turn into weirdness when her son marries. Watching All about my Mom and Virtual Daughter in Law is definitely brain twisty.
I've been watching several movies because I'm trying to wait out the month until Flying Dragons, Noble, and Village comes.
So jdrama: Risk no kamisama.
Movies: rewatched 11th mother which is one of my fave movies. Watched Rockin on Heaven's Door. Watched several KBS Drama specials. Lee Joon is becoming such a favorite.
That's about it. Have a great weekend, all.

Hello!
As a relatively new Kdrama watcher, I'm jumping back and forth in between new and old shows (just whatever interests me) After discovering Lee Jun Ki I'm watching Joseon Gunman. I enjoy it so far! I also recently watched Runway Cop with my mom. That's a silly movie, but enjoyable nevertheless. She seemed to enjoy it as well!
Here's an question; if any of your favorite actors/actresses could start making Hollywood films (ala Rain) regardless of language barrier, which ones would it be? Personally I'd love to see Lee Soo-Hyuk (big shock), Seo-in-Guk, and Lee-Jun-Ki become big internationally. They're all likable actors and it'd be interesting to see how they'd work in Hollywood. I want more Korean leading men in Hollywood in general.

Welcome LeahF:).
I don't have anything to watch right now so I'm making a list of old movies and dramas to watch.
What I do is I'll pick a director, writer or a favorite actor and watch all their work that I missed. This week is all about writer/director Park Chan Wook.
I am one of Lee Joon Ki's psycho fan-girls lol. My favorite of his is still "King and the Clown." The movie that skyrocket him to stardom.
If I were to pick a Hollywood movie for him I'd love to see him in the Lord of the Ring trilogy as Legolas (apologies to Orlando Bloom). He can transform into a gorgeous elf without much effort. He can do all of Legolas's cool fight scenes without a double.
He can also replace Keanu Reeves in the Matrix so I can watch the last two installments. Oppa would knock Neo's role out of the park in slow motion lol.
After that he can head over to Disney and steal Aladdin's role from Scott Weinger. Oppa looks more like Prince Ali and he can sing too.
I have more Hollywood roles he could do but I'll stop fan-girling here for now lol.

Twenty Again - I just want to say that I find this drama difficult to watch because Ha No Ra has spent the last twenty years being a doormat for her husband and son and it shows. To top it off, her husband has been having an affair for like three years; only half of that time he's been actively trying to divorce his wife and I really just want to punch him in the face.
