Yoo Yeon-seok
- Aww, I envy those who are going to be able to see this. Yoo Yeon-seok (Warm and Cozy) is fulfilling a long-time goal for himself by performing in a musical, his first since his college days and his professional debut. He’s been cast as the lead in The Man Who Walks Through Walls, which is based on the 1943 French short story Le Passe-muraille by Marcel Ayme, and which was previously adapted for Broadway and scored by Michel Legrand. It was adapted for the Korean stage in 2006, and since then has starred such notable names as Park Sang-won, Eom Ki-joon, Jo Jung-seok, Im Chang-jung and Lee Jong-hyuk. Yoo will share the role with Lee Ji-hoon, and Go Chang-seok (Kill Me, Heal Me) and Jo Jae-yoon (Last) have been double-cast in a supporting role. The musical will run from November 21 to February 16 for 99 performances at Hongik Daehangno Art Center, and tickets will be available beginning September 22. [Xports News]
- Timeless beauty Go So-young (wife to Jang Dong-gun and a huge star in her own right in the ‘90s and early 2000s) is being wooed to make her comeback in Freedom Wife, a film to be based on a 1954 novel written by Jung Bi-seok (previously turned into a film in 1956, the content made waves at the time). The remake will be a present-day look at the wives of Cheongdam-dong, and director Byun Hyuk (The Scarlet Letter) hopes to begin filming before the end of the year. If Go accepts, this would mark her return after an 8-year hiatus from acting. [Star News]
- Her movie Our Dating History (formerly titled Office Romance) will be released soon, and Jeon Hye-bin (Joseon Gunman) isn’t stopping to rest; she’s already begun filming for her next leading role. In Mermaid Legend, she’ll play a former national synchronized swimmer who moves to Jeju Island to begin a new life. She’ll become close to diver woman Moon Hee-kyung (Twinkle Twinkle My Heart), and Jeon will put on a synchronized swimming performance with all of her diver friends. The human drama film will be directed by Oh Myul (Golden Chariot in the Sky, Jiseul). [Sports Chosun]
- In The Room is in hot demand on the international film festival circuit. We wrote about it when Choi Woo-shik’s casting news was confirmed last year, and the Eric Khoo-directed omnibus movie is complete and has just screened/will screen at the San Sebastian, Toronto and Busan International Film Festivals. The Singaporean director’s latest work takes place entirely in a single hotel room and is set between the 1940s and the 1990s. Each of the six shorts depicts a different decade, and Choi (Ho-gu’s Love) stars in the ‘90s segment, which is suggestively titled The First Time. Together the anthology demonstrates the changing views of love and sex over time. [Dong A]
- The web drama Nightmare Teacher is doing an amazing job of securing talent. Kim So-hyun (Who Are You–School 2015) has signed on as a good student and leader of her class at a school where peculiar things are happening. She’ll set out to uncover the school’s mysteries, but she’ll need to beware of Eom Ki-joon (Masked Prosecutor), who will play the titular teacher (a sharp departure from his character in Dream High). He has the frightening ability to make students’ dreams come true, but at a price. He’ll force the students to sign a contract selling their souls, and he’ll prey on the young adults who are unable to resist the sweet temptation of having their hopes realized (but ack no, not at the expense of your soul!). Once casting is complete, scenes for the chilling web drama will be shot entirely in Daegu. [Joy News 24, Dong A]
- This web drama sounds cute: Kim Jung-hoon (Her Legend) and Sandara Park (of 2NE1) have been cast as the leads in Missing Korea, a rom-com set in 2020 in a time when tensions between the two Koreas have thawed and the countries appear to be heading towards unification. To signify unity, the first-ever pageant crowning the beauty of both countries will be held, and Kim will play the head of the pageant’s induction committee while Park will play a factory worker-turned-delegate from Nampo, a North Korean city. They’ll become acquainted with each other as they prepare for the pageant and eventually fall in love. Missing Korea will be directed by Min Doo-shik (In Between) and will run for six ten-minute episodes on KBS World, Daum, YouTube and other sites in October. [MBN, EDaily]

I still haven't forgiven the Hong sisters for turning Yoo Yeon-seok's first ever drama as leading man into .....THAT. Hopefully this new musical will be better.

I was just about to post the exact same comment. I still can't believe that Yoo Yeon Seok and Kang Sora wasted their precious time and effort on that sloppy mess of a drama. This was my last straw with Hong Sisters. They clearly don't give a damn about writing dramas anymore.

That drama was bearable solely because of them. They should take up manyy lead roles just to make us forget tat plot less drama.

Agreed, I was so worried that drama would affect them in getting better offers but at least their star power still seems intact.

They never had any real star power to begin with, let's be honest. So it can't affect them since no one cares.

They came off extremely well-received roles in the two biggest cable hits of all time (and Kang Sora also had a major role in one of the biggest movie hits of the last five years), so it's pure twaddle to say they never had any star power to begin with.

Her acting career has really taken off during the past few years; think her 1st lead was in the cable sageuk "Yaksha" in 2010.
Previously, she just had minor roles and was mostly known as a dancer on variety shows like X-Man and Love Letter (having been in a short-lived girl group).

I didn't notice her before until Queen In-soo, (another cable sageuk) and I liked her a lot and loved her in the first few eps of Joseon Gunman. I probably would've finished watching it if she was the lead actress.

My next good Kdrama idea: JeJu island housing development where all the tenants are middle-class emigres from Seoul trying to build new lives. Meanwhile, their JeJu island natives are dealing with the drama of making a living in a community where rich emigres are driving up the cost of everything.
Could be played for drama or comedy. In the United States, an ongoing dramatic issue in New York, Aspen and other ski-towns, and the nicer parts of Montana.

Sohyun what are you doing in a web drama?? ?? I wish your next drama will be in the major big channel in Korea or in cable channel ??? But the synopsis of your new drama is interesting and you are going to work with veteran actor uhm ki joon again but why web drama ???? I was expecting something great than web drama ??? What is wrong with your agency, you were just done filming Pure Love and now you will film this web drama ??? Are they treating you right? You are just 16 years old. Please stay healthy ! ??

I am just disappointed, her 2 leading men got casted in major big channel in Korea and also in a cable show but she only got a web drama. She was awesome playing 2 roles in School 2015 which is a "popular school drama show" and her next project was just a web drama? Its like she is already in thermosphere after School 2015 and then her agency just decided to pull her down to troposphere level again. IMO its just a let down. I really hope they let Sohyun do this project in the best interest of Sohyun's career.

i dunno, i liked a few, like the one with sandara and kang seung-yoon. their performances were fairly solid, despite some mediocre acting from the second lead actress. and despite the horribly predictable plot, the EXO webdrama (which, yes, i watched LOL) was a pleasant surprise, as D.O and chanyeol were really good for idol actors.

I watched that whole Exo web drama, and as for the acting of Exo, I would say D.O. was ok, but Chanyeol, absolutely not.
The other two boys in the house with them were not bad, though - good comic delivery. Especially the one who got a bromance with the heroine's little brother.

Reading how classic novels/short stories mandatorily studied during my school years have turned into musicals often leaves me dumbfounded. Should I soon expect le Grand Meaulnes or Un sac de billes to be adapted on Korean stages?
@awcoconuts, the name of the author of Le Passe-muraille is spelled Aymé (alt + 0233) instead of "Ayme". Granted, the US keyboard does not provide foreign accentuation. It's just that his name sounds a whole lot different without the accent, pretty much like 애므 instead of 애메.

I think most musical adaptations that are doing well in Korea are from popular musicals like Les Miserables (Park Ji-Yeon), Jekyll and Hyde (Jo Seung Woo), Wicked, Chicago, Dracula (Junsu) etc.
I'd love to watch their own musicals like The Last Empress and Myeongdong Romance.

I am an avid fan of Go So-young. I admire her fashion, and have followed how she ruled the fashion world. Tbh age is just a number to her. She looks extremely gorgeous forever! Now tell me she should accept this. Please Go So-young...
While I am glad that Uhm Ki-joon has a new project, I am saddened that he is stereotyped as creepy-ish, psycho-ish, stalker-ish since Man of Vendetta. He was a total leading man before that year. Swoon-worthy and matinee-idol. Uhm Ki-joon can definitely excellently act. And the way he generates chemistry is palpable. [Still happy for him no matter what!] #fan

Yoo Yeon-seok was uninspiring in warm and cozy.
Yey to Go So-Young comeback. Looking forward to this new film with Jeon Hye-Bin. Oh Myul's Jiseul (which also won the Sundance Film Festival) was a superbly crafted film.

That was mostly due to the insipid lead character and the even more insipid dialogue (Kang Sora didn't come out of that looking so great either).
The actors who played the 2nd leads (the older couple) and the supporting characters came out of W&C better than the leads.

Seriously? If anything, the leads are the best thing about W&C and made the best they could out of poor material - this is the consensus across Korean and international viewers, for the most part.

Ah I would love to see YYS in a musical. Wish I could go.. Despite the plot, he did a great job in warm and cozy. Now that he's involved in this musical till February, doesn't that mean he won't be filming any drama till after that? It will be a while before seeing him on screen again.
