Twenty Again: Episode 2
by girlfriday
I really love Lee Sang-yoon and Choi Ji-woo’s brand of petty bickering in this. It’s an entire drama about adults who don’t know how to act like adults, but because all of the characters are like this, it evens the playing field. Everyone is a little bit hapless but really endearing, none more than Choi Ji-woo, who’s so cute that you totally don’t think it’s weird that someone would be hung up on her for twenty years. Of course, there are probably more mature ways to get a girl’s attention after all that time spent pining, but what would be the fun in that?

EPISODE 2 RECAP
It’s a rough first day at school for college freshman Nora, who gets called ajumoni and told to leave the class by her theater professor. That professor also happens to be her high school classmate Hyun-seok, who seems to be enjoying this a little too much.
Nora finally ekes out an answer that she’s a student here, so then he tells her to get up and introduce herself to the class. With that, Hyun-seok moves on to describing his course, which he basically says is difficult but worth it because they get to hang out with a famous director like him.
The students all clap, thoroughly impressed, while Nora flashes back to high school. (Yes! Please be dorky… please be dorky…)
By then, Nora is best friends with Ballet Bitch Yoon-young, and they practice together outside the school. An awkward boy with glasses comes out from behind a tree and scares the girls. It’s Hyun-seok, and he quickly tries to explain that he’s not a weirdo.
Yoon-young says that everyone knows he’s whack job, and scoffs when he compliments their dance. She says they’re practicing two separate routines (she’s ballet and Nora is modern), but Hyun-seok says it looked like one dance to him, and shares the song he was listening to on his Walkman. It’s Kim Gun-mo’s “Bad Meeting,” which we saw the whole troupe dancing to in a previous flashback.
He trips in fear when Yoon-young raises a fist at him and turns around to go, all slumped shoulders and bruised ego. Nora can barely hide her laugh, but she calls out to him (reading his nametag) and asks to hear that song again. He breaks into a grin and plays it for her. Aw.
Back in the present, Hyun-seok tells the class that any story needs a twist to make it interesting, and announces that there will be four group projects this term. One student raises his hand to complain, and Hyun-seok shocks him by replying with his name, NA SOON-NAM. The guy next to Soon-nam says that Hyun-seok is famous for memorizing his students’ names, no matter how many there are.
Hyun-seok expects that many of them will be dropping the course, so groups will be assigned next time. He gives Nora a pointed look and walks out with a satisfied grin. Nora hangs her head quietly, but then darts up to go after him, shouting, “Hey, Cha Hyun-seok!”
She speaks comfortably to him in banmal now, and asks why he was so mean to her in class when he knew who she was all along. He points out that she IS an ajumma, so there’s nothing wrong with calling her one, and reminds her that she has plenty of time to drop his class.
She calls out to him again when he starts to walk away, and he shouts back at her to call him Professor from now on. He doesn’t think they’ll ever see each other again, but insists that she address him respectfully.
His assistant Sang-ye overhears their conversation and runs up to Hyun-seok, and his attitude is totally different with her—he’s nice, even. She reminds him that he has an appointment tonight, and he agrees that if he’s being given support for a big project like this, he should show his gratitude. Nora watches and notes huffily that his smile is still the same.
Nora runs over to Yoon-young’s dance studio to ask if she’s ever run into Hyun-seok at any of the high school reunions over the years, but she hasn’t. Yoon-young is about to say something about Grandma, but then decides against it. She gapes to hear what he did to embarrass Nora on her first day, and calls him crazy.
Yoon-young assumes that the massive success went to his head. Nora wonders if she ever wronged Hyun-seok back in the day, but Yoon-young says there wasn’t time for that—they were all together for such a short time before Nora vanished like the wind.
Nora doesn’t see how such a nice kid got so mean, while Yoon-young tells her to worry about herself. She gives her a spare phone to use and makes sure that she’s made an appointment to go to the hospital, and asks what her plan is to postpone her divorce. Nora doesn’t have an answer for that.
Hyun-seok goes to the board dinner for his new trauma healing theater project, where he’s introduced to the psychology professor he’ll be working with. Of course it’s Nora’s husband Woo-chul, whose research is in trauma patients with PTSD.
Woo-chul’s name seems to ring a bell, and Hyun-seok looks over the project proposal again. He remembers hearing from his friend who runs Grandma’s ddukbokki place that Nora’s husband was a psychology professor at Youngju University.
He flashes back to 1995, to moments after he’s just found out that Nora disappeared—that she got pregnant, married, and ran off to Germany with her new husband. Hyun-seok is beside himself and asks Yoon-young how something like this could happen, and whether Nora had a boyfriend all this time.
Yoon-young says no, Woo-chul oppa wasn’t her boyfriend, and she’s just as shocked by Nora’s sudden decision to get married and go abroad. Hyun-seok is clearly heartbroken. He gets no other explanation, and only has that one name to latch onto: Kim Woo-chul.
And there’s Kim Woo-chul sitting right across the table from him now. Hyun-seok glares lasers at him, while the board members heap on the praise for Woo-chul’s work and talk about how fortunate it is that a spot opened up on their faculty because of the bribery incident. So that clears that up—he’s at Woocheon University now, but no one in his family knows about it yet. And their colleague KIM YI-JIN (Park Hyo-joo) seems especially keen to have Woo-chul on their faculty.
Hyun-seok gets up abruptly when dinner is ordered, making an empty excuse about another appointment. Yi-jin tries to get him to stay, but Hyun-seok says curtly that he simply came to make introductions, and walks out. He stomps out muttering, “Crazy. Did you follow your husband to college? He doesn’t even seem that impressive!”
Nora returns to an empty house and stares at her reflection in the window, remembering her embarrassment in class, and decides that Hyun-seok is a jerk.
Husband Woo-chul stops to give professor Yi-jin a ride… and she sidles up to him with a smile to say that he did a good job today. Oh, are they together? It doesn’t seem like a new relationship, but I guess he is divorced in practice?
Nora tries to open up Woo-chul’s computer to look up some of her textbooks, but can’t get past the login screen. He jumps out of his skin when he comes home and finds her in his office, and asks to discuss their divorce papers.
She knows the deadline is here to file them, but asks for three months to prepare herself for a new life. He argues that she’s the one who frittered away time studying to get into college instead, and doesn’t see why he should give her more time.
Nora says that she knows he can sue her, which he told her. And that he’d win, which he also told her. Nora: “But I know that would also take three months. You didn’t have to tell me that. I saw it on TV.” Hahahaha. She says all of this in the same calm, adorable tone, which just makes it funnier.
She cries alone in the bathroom, since to her, three months later is when she’ll tell her family that she’s dying of cancer. Woo-chul tries to get her to come out so they can talk about it, but she only comes out when son Min-soo comes home, then goes right back into the bathroom to cry some more.
The next day, Nora loses her phone again, this time on the subway. She offers to hold a big basket of flowers for a girl, and flower girl finds her phone after Nora’s already gotten off the train.
Woo-chul rides his bike to campus and sees Nora digging through her bag on the corner, looking for her phone. He watches curiously as Woo-chul drives right by her, and finds it odd that neither of them acknowledges the other.
She turns around and does see Hyun-seok across the street, and he’s too far away to hear her words, but can tell that she’s visibly scoffing at him in contempt. He scoffs right back, and it mirrors a face-off they had in high school.
Hyun-seok wonders why she didn’t come to school with her husband, and guesses they’re into student-teacher role-playing. Pfft. And then he wonders if it’s another “secret mission like that time with Grandma.”
Meanwhile, Nora stares from across the street and decides, “He must be crazy. He’s not a genius, he’s crazy!” He wonders what she’s saying, and right at that moment, she calls him a wacko, and he can read her lips clear as day.
It’s what the kids used to call him back in high school, and he gets so worked up that he races past her on his bike and flips her cap off. LOL. You are so. Freaking. Petty. She shouts that he’s crazy, and he rides off with a huge grin on his face.
Nora is surprised when the flower girl from the subway enters her literature class and returns her phone before sitting down. The professor gives them a long reading list and warns them not to give any excuses about not being able to get the books, so Nora maps out her course to the library.
As soon as class ends, she makes a mad dash for the library, zipping through students and taking flying leaps over motorcyclists, like a comic book hero on a mission. Hyun-seok is amused to see her running by.
The speed pays off when Nora manages to find all the books she needs. But when she gets to the counter to check them out, the librarian tells her they’ve all been reserved. Flower girl Park Seung-hyun walks right up and claims the books, since she put them all on hold through her library app.
It’s a whole new world to Nora, who has to go to the student center to ask how you get apps and whether or not you can let your group project partners meet without you. The clerk there waves her off to go ask the aliens, which just confuses her more. So then she’s forced to stop random students to ask for their help, and she happens to ask her son’s girlfriend Hye-mi. They don’t know each other, and Hye-mi just makes an excuse and rushes off, not wanting to bother.
Another student is a little shocked that she’s a peer but kindly calls her “hoobae-nim,” and tells her about the aliens, which is a site for their university’s students. She still can’t find the site itself, and ends up asking Hye-mi and her friends where to log in.
Hye-mi looks put out by the request, and her friend ends up telling Nora where to find the site. Nora rattles off other questions, about group projects and where to find readings, and Hye-mi happily answers a call from Min-soo as an excuse to get up. Her friends scurry away too, and the other tables empty out immediately, as if sensing that she’ll come ask them next.
Hye-mi brings Min-soo a lunch that she packed herself, and he eats it happily even though it clearly tastes bad. They’re cute together, though she’s clearly always wanting more time together. He’s very strict about his study schedule and she pouts about having to go to a movie alone, but she’s back to smiling when he walks her to class.
It happens to be a class she shares with Nora, who just misses seeing the couple holding hands outside the door. Professor Yi-jin walks in and introduces this class, which is about marriage and family, and understanding your partner. She singles out Nora and asks if she’s married, and Nora shyly answers that she’d rather not talk about her personal life.
Yi-jin says that the class is capped at ten men and ten women because they’ll be paired off, and tells the women to put their heads down while the guys are asked to hand over a personal item. Hye-mi makes sure to keep her eyes open to get the best partner.
Everyone chooses, then the guys turn around to meet their partners, and everyone breathes a sigh of relief to see that they’re not paired with the ajumma. All except Soon-nam, the kid from Nora’s theater class.
Hyun-seok happens to see Nora chase after Soon-nam in the halls, and stops when he hears her apologizing. Nora says she’s sorry because she didn’t know it would be this kind of class, and Soon-nam coldly tells her she has time to drop it.
Nora says she plans to stick with it anyway, and Soon-nam counters, “Do you have anything left to learn from this class, ajumma?” Ouuuuch. He says that this conversation will count as their homework assignment being done and walks off, leaving her alone and fighting tears.
Hyun-seok sighs and wonders why she’d take a class like that and face more embarrassment, but then he seeks Yi-jin out on campus. Yi-jin complains about the “old maid” in her class, and Hyun-seok is curious to hear that Nora didn’t say she was married.
He listens to Yi-jin complain, then points out that the class isn’t meant for matchmaking—why should it matter if someone is older, single, or married, when everyone spends a lifetime making mistakes in personal relationships? Aw, I like you so much better when you’re defending her.
He’s so consumed with thoughts of Nora that he misses calls from his assistant Sang-ye about a meeting with a television producer. Sang-ye says it’s so unlike him not to just ask Nora the things he’s curious about—he’s someone who can’t stand not knowing something, and she doesn’t understand what’s so different about Nora.
So then he finally goes and asks all the questions that are driving him crazy: Why is she going to college, when she’s being ridiculed by the students and by him, and made an outcast? Why didn’t she say anything about her husband being a professor? Why aren’t they coming to school together in the morning? “And why didn’t you tell your husband about me ridiculing you in class?”
Cut to: an empty sidewalk. Hyun-seok: “Right? Right? RIGHT? Why didn’t I ask her these things? Why can’t I ask her?” Because you’re a big spaz? Of course Woo-chul picks that moment to call and ask him to lunch the next day.
Hye-mi storms out of the movie theater, and Min-soo chases after her to ask what was so wrong about him dozing off for a few minutes. He argues that he skipped a tutoring session to come to the movie because she wanted him to, but totally misses the point that she doesn’t care about the movie.
She cries that they barely see each other as it is, but on the one rare date they could manage, he fell asleep because he finds her so boring. He finally understands and grabs her in a hug, and she cries as if her world is crumbling, which is kind of adorable.
Woo-chul tells his girlfriend Yi-jin that his wife asked for three more months until they finalize the divorce, and Yi-jin says she can wait. She does worry that in three months the wife will ask for even more time, and suggests that Woo-chul get her to sign a contract.
He finds Nora passed out in bed by the time he gets home, and becomes curious about what she’s up to lately. He reaches into her bag and almost pulls out a syllabus, but thinks better of it at the last second.
Nora has taken to covering herself up head to toe, with hat, sunglasses, and trench coat. She contemplates dropping out of school, then comes upon a row of student organizations welcoming freshman members. We see Soon-nam tell his hoobaes in his dance club to do well before walking off.
Nora puts her head down and tries to walk past unnoticed, but one of the dancers comes out and takes her by the hand as an invitation to dance. She resists at first, but it’s that old Kim Gun-mo song and the steps are easy, so she timidly starts to join in.
She starts to get into it and busts out some of her old moves, and the crowd cheers. Some of them even record the performance on their phones. She remembers herself and makes a quick escape, though the smile on her face is undeniable. And she’s still smiling when she gets to class. Ugh, why does that tug at my heartstrings so?
Hye-mi sits down and sees Nora at the desk next to her, and quickly moves over a row to avoid her.
Hyun-seok sits down to lunch with Woo-chul, and coldly rebuffs all of Woo-chul’s overtures to help him with his project. Woo-chul thinks it obvious that he’d want a psychologist to consult on a play that aims to actually heal people’s traumas, but Hyun-seok repeatedly shuts him down and gets the last word.
He’s confused all over again when he steps outside and sees Nora eating a sad triangle kimbap on a bench, and asks why a professor’s wife isn’t eating in the faculty cafeteria, choosing to sit on the smelly bench where drunk students sometimes pee. She just continues eating and notes that that explains the funny smell.
She tells him to mind his own beeswax and carry on, which of course just makes him even more curious and even more stubborn about it. So she shovels the rest in her mouth and waves him off, but then turns the corner and sees her husband coming out.
She gasps and runs back to hide on the bench, which thoroughly confuses Hyun-seok. He looks back and forth between husband and wife, wondering how to make sense of this, but she ignores his questions about hiding from her husband.
He asks if she didn’t follow her husband to this school, and that gets her attention. She doesn’t seem to know what he means, and when she starts to walk away, he pulls her close to stop her. He stares intently into her eyes, as if trying to figure her out right then and there, but she averts his gaze and pulls away. Hyun-seok is left standing there in a daze, wondering, “What is it? What is it? What is it?”
Nora calls the psychology department at Woo-chul’s last school, and they tell her that he’s now at Woocheon. She now has a new problem, as she remembers her psychology class taught by Kim Woo-chul, which she had assumed was another person with the same name.
She runs to the computer lab to ask if anyone wants to trade psych classes, and one student is eager to get into Woo-chul’s class. The problem is, he doesn’t have the other class that she wants to trade for, but he and his friend are assy enough to set up the trade knowing that she’ll be left without a class.
She drops Woo-chul’s class and decides to drop Hyun-seok’s class too, then waits and waits, and totally gets screwed in the deal. Hyun-seok’s assistant Sang-ye happens to witness it, and tells Nora that it’s important to do trade like that face to face. Sang-ye tells Hyun-seok about it later, and he suddenly seems to care when she says it was the ajumma.
Woo-chul yelps in fear when he comes home to Nora standing in their entryway in the dark, like a creepy robot. She asks why he didn’t tell her about moving schools, and lies that she heard through Yoon-young.
He says that they’re technically divorced, so he doesn’t see why he’d tell her anything. They’re strangers now, and have nothing to do with each other. She takes that in with a pained expression, but agrees: “You’re right… but I think it’s a little bit petty.” He flips out at that, but she says calmly that it was just rude of him not to tell her, and that he was the one who said everyone has a right to an opinion. In her opinion, he’s being petty.
The next day, Woo-chul teaches his first class, and Hyun-seok looks out over the campus as he ponders Sang-ye’s questions about why he doesn’t just ask Nora the things he’s curious about. He sees her sitting alone on a bench in the distance.
Nora grows angrier and angrier the more she thinks about Woo-chul’s answer that they’re strangers now. She takes out a photo of Grandma and says she’s really sad right now and misses her a lot. She cries as she tells Grandma to wait just a little longer, and they’ll be together again.
Hyun-seok walks up and sees her crying. He jumps straight to the point and asks if she wants to take the other psych class that she needs, and he offers to get her into the class. She wipes her tears and asks if he really can, and he says he will, if she just answers one question: “Why did you hide from your husband?”
He supposes that she hid because her husband doesn’t know she’s going to college, so his question is really why is she secretly going to college without telling her husband. She doesn’t see why that’s the trade, and asks why he can’t just get her into the class because they’re old friends.
Hyun-seok refuses, and his only answer for why is, “Because I don’t want to.”
She calls it quits and starts to walk away, which of course just makes him exponentially more curious as to why she won’t answer the simple question.
He grabs her again and demands an answer, and this time she lashes out with Woo-chul’s words: “What are you that you’re asking me that, you jerk? Why do I have to answer? What are you to me?”
She pounds his chest and finally lets out some of her anger, even if misdirected: “What did I do that was so wrong? Cha Hyun-seok, why are you being such an ass?!” He crosses his arms and actually echoes her question, wondering why he’s so fixated on her. Ooh, I know!
But he persists in wanting to know, and offers one last counter, “Shall I ask your husband?”
COMMENTS
I don’t even find Hyun-seok infuriating because he’s so bad at getting what he wants. It cracks me up that he can’t just ask the things he wants to know (because his pride couldn’t take the blow, I gather), and concocts elaborate deals just to get her to answer one simple question. It’s hilariously ineffectual, and just makes Nora more stubborn about not telling him what he’s dying to know. I really like that the curiosity drives him crazy, because that’s part of why he suffered when she disappeared—he was left to wonder about her with no definitive answers.
What I like most about Hyun-seok’s characterization is that he’s always got a melodrama playing in his head (which fits with his artistic side), even though in practice, he’s really kind of a big dork who overthinks every move and usually says the wrong thing. We don’t know yet how Nora felt about him as a teenager, but it seems likely that she didn’t give him much thought, and that his dramatic first love was nothing more than a high school friendship to her. And even though his assumptions about Nora in the present are totally convoluted and wrong, I don’t blame him for wanting to appear completely aloof and over her, to the point of excess. (Okay, public classroom mockery was not okay, but I think he knows that.) It’s obvious that he’s still obsessed with her, but it’s nice to see it coming out in softer ways, like when he shows concern despite himself, or comes to her defense with Yi-jin.
I know that Nora has to experience some harsh things in order for her growth to really mean something, whether it’s with her family, with Hyun-seok, or her classmates. But it’s been a rough first week for her, and I was ready to hit the next person who made her feel like an outcast. People were so mean to her that I got all verklempt when she fit in with the dance students for half a minute there, and got to experience the joy of doing what she loves so much. I was glad to get a glimpse of that hopefulness and excitement, because I think I needed that to keep my hope alive that her college experience would actually make her happy.
Despite the fact that I don’t think real students and faculty would so outwardly belittle an ajumma for going to school, I do like all the relatable fish-out-of-water conflicts for Nora. You don’t have to be twenty years older than your classmates to feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t know how to do things, to wonder when everyone else was given secret tips for how to get ahead when you’re always rushing to catch up. I really felt her pain when she had to stop random classmates for help, or when Soon-nam was so clearly disappointed to have her as a partner. They’re so going to become best friends and dance partners, right? That’s going to be so cute. I can’t wait to see Nora come out of her shell and be proud of who she is, and earn the respect of her peers for wanting to learn and grow as an adult. And I can’t wait to see Hyun-seok bring out the real Nora—the one who talks back and refuses to back down in an argument, and doesn’t silently endure all things. I really like her when she’s fighting with Hyun-seok, which bodes really well for the romance to come.

Thanks for the recap! Been reading recaps on dramabeans for 5 years and this is my second time making a comment since I have an overwhelming love for this show! I think it's mostly due to Lee Sang Yoon he's just so attractive.
For some reason whenever I see Choi Won Young I still think he's Lee Joon Ho just living a double life or something xD I'm hoping for Park Bo Gum to cameo but it probably won't happen D:
I laughed so hard during the library mission and I felt so bad for Ha No Ra when she didn't get to check out her books, hopefully someone will teach her the ropes (hopefully its Hyun Suk <3). Anyways I have high hopes for this drama!

It would be awesome if Lee Hyeon showed up in the last episode and arrested Joonho/Joonyoung/Woochul.

Ha! Maybe Ha No Ra can sue him for cheating on her and then he can be arrested by Lee Hyeon xD Though I'm not sure how divorce and cheating laws work in SK

Adultery is no loner illegal in SK. The law was just recently passed this year. It was previously a reason someone can choose on their divorce application forms, but not any more.

No Ra seems like such a sad sack with her husband, taking his insults and rudeness with such a long face. But then she says things like "you're so petty" or "I know you could sue me but that would take longer than giving me those 3 extra months." She has a grit to her and I know it'll come out more over the course of the show.
And yes, I would love to see her and Soon-Nam become friends and dance partners.

I don't get why the pretty girl got interested in the son from the moment she saw him from the back, when she interrupted their drinking session, offering to be his Black Rose. Then she went outside to wait for him to come out to talk to her. It puzzled me yesterday but I thought it'd get explained in ep 2, which it wasn't. To the contrary, we only see her sticking to him like glue, and making him lunch. Is it becos he looks like Song Joong Ki even from the back, which she could see from the other side of the screen?
Does anyone get it? I sure don't. It may not be impt but it bugs me.

I was thinking it might be just because she likes going after good looking guys. Like in the marriage and family class she peaked to see which guy put in which item so she could get the best one.....well tbh im not sure. Her character annoys me although I really like Na Eun her acting could be better.

I agree...I almost want the whole son-gf scenes to just all disappear, cause they both bug me. What kind of son talks like that to his mom, anyway? He treats her like an annoying pest, and I'm ready to smack some sense into him. I also agree Na Eun acting could/should be better, she's a bitchy character, sure...but to add boring into it is like a nail in the coffin.

I'm not sure either, but I'm hoping/assuming there will be a flashback scene somewhere, where it shows she knew and liked him before the Black Rose incident. Otherwise, yeah, it's weird and makes no sense. I'm not actually a fan of her either way - that scene where she pretended to cry at the movies sorta made me cringe, so I'll be focusing on the main romance from here on out.

I agree. That scene made me cringe in more ways than one - eyes rolling with my hand as as gun pretending to shoot myself. It seems to me she has some kind of agenda but we will know soon enough. I hope.

Thanks for the fast recap. I love this episode so much better compared with the first one. It has much better production all in all, better editing, music and dialogue.
My fave scenes are Hyun Seok flipping No Ra's cap at uni and No Ra standing up to her husband and Hyun Seok about their pettiness.
Love that tvn is getting their groove and producing better dramas that we could look forward to every weekend.

That's my one main worry. We had Ohlala couple . . . and I have this huge fear that she will go back to hubby. :(
I'm keeping up hopes that we'll get something like My Love Eun-Dong, where she finds her value AND moves on with a man who will appreciate her. :) How great would that be?
I want her to be happy, but NOT with the man that spent 20 years making her feel so small and not enough.

One other question: If she can talk back and not back down with the theatre professor, why is she so cowered and timid with her own husband of 20 years? Is it just becos he is the breadwinner, she has no income and no power in that marriage?

She sees Hyunseok as an equal because they are friends while she sees her husband as someone superior. You can see from they way she speaks about her husband ("He never says the wrong things" etc.) that she feels inferior to him. It's sad and I hope she gets her confidence and love herself more.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I think 20 years of being dependent on Woo Chul, of being told she does not understand much or that he can't talk to her since she will not understand.... put downs, indifference and condescension seem to have taken it's toll in that relationship. She is used to thinking and believing that what he says is right. So she actually quotes him to himself., "You said so yourself ...."
The situation No Ra is in has been nicely set up so now we are totally invested in her turnaround. She may be too nice to 'bite the hand that fed her' but I hope she gets to prove that she's Woo Chul's equal, (even that she's better than Yi Jin) and is able to speak to him with confidence by the end of this show.

Thanks for the recap. I was impressed with this episode and am hoping this will be the cure for the drama slump this season.
I was actually hoping she wouldn't drop HS's class, if only because this theatre and trauma project sounds fascinating (humanities grad student nerding out here). Too bad he was an ass and a half to her in class.
Like Girlfriday, I agree that the show's portrayal of outcast status is all too poignant. Even if they are overplaying the adult student issue, anyone who was a bit of a misfit as an adolescent will recognize the signs here: trying to ignore side-eye from classmates, the embarrassment of someone refusing to sit next to you, the horror of group projects and partners. I admire the show's willingness to take us to some dark places.
And, finally, please let Soon Nam be her cool friend. It's been too long since Angry Mom. Be the next Bok-dong, please!

Do people in Korea really care that much about their classmates age? In my country, people go back to school later in life, it's very common. And I can't imagine someone being treated like a pariah just for being in her thirties.
It's one aspect of the show that really grates because I kept thinking, you're are at uni, mind your own business. That's what people do at uni, you're too busy to care about what other people do with their lives. But, idk, maybe it's a cultural thing.

I think they are exaggerating this aspect of the show, to create more drama, so that story becomes more interesting, and the viewer ends up caring more and sympathizing more with the suffering heroine. At least, I think that is the reason, but I could be wrong.

I wished they did not exaggerate that part; the run to the library is the exception -- that was awesome. There's no need to be overly dramatic about it. Going to school is part of life. So, just show it to us just like how it would in the real life. I get the part about the "spaceman" or the library app, all those things that would be new to her. I don't understand the behavior of the students or frankly everyone around her; that doesn't happen in the real world.
Sorry to compare, but that was one of the reason I enjoy Oh My Ghost. The characters are actual persons and the situations are very real. Hell, the main concept of the show shouldn't even happen in the actual world, but they made us believe it could. Ooh, how I'm missing you show.
So, I'll probably give this show two more episodes. If nothing has changed, then I'm dropping it.

<I get the part about the “spaceman” or the library app, all those things that would be new to her.
I think they would be new to some of the young students too – these are services specific to the institution. But even when it's "general", people of all ages often don't know. I teach writing workshops to undergraduate and postgraduate students. One is on referencing, so I talk about referencing software. In the past three years, every time I have done this, one of the students might have previously used referencing software, another might have heard of it, and the rest (usually in groups of 10-20 people) are absolutely clueless.
Also, in my experience, many incoming students, including the 20 year olds that did grow up already typing rather than handwriting their school essays need plenty of help on the digital front. They may know how to chat, take selfies etc. but surprisingly many know little to nothing about academic databases, Boolean searches in library catalogues, how to evaluate websites for reliability, Styles in MS Word, Turn-it-in, edoroam, etc.

You're right on the exaggerated part, it appears so from the translated drama web articles such as kkulijaem, there was quite a few comments on the fact that majority of the students would never disrespect an older student at university.
http://kkuljaem.blogspot.co.nz/2015/08/spoilers-twenty-again-pilot.html
I would also like to believe that strong concept of seniority still applies at Uni, discrimination will exist but maybe not as extreme as it is seen in this drama.

nora's experience (in this episode when people were reluctant to answer her questions or sit near her) really reminded me of my time studying abroad. most of the exchange students took classes on the international part of campus but i was a double major at the time and had some very specific classes i needed to take to graduate on time, so i ended up taking some classes on the main campus. i'm not korean, but even though i spoke korean pretty well at the time and never used english in those classes, other students would refuse to talk to me. i'd ask someone a question about the website our assignments were posted on and thy'd mumble an answer and change seats. once a guy came in late and sat next to me, realized who he was next to, and not-at-all-discreetly got up &moved.
other korean students i knew through language exchange said it wasn't my fault &that the students were probably just nervous because they weren't used to having someone so different in class, but idk. it still sucked. i cant really speak to the age issue, because i was the same age as those students but idk. there are some student and professor reactions that seem exaggerated, but some of it i can see happening in real life. (i'm not saying this kind of thing would happen to everyone; thats just my own experience)

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if it was because those people felt inadequate in case you spoke to them in non-Korean, that they were uncomfortable and trying to avoid you? And I read this on a blog, I think it was 'Ask a Korean'... they are ... "uncomfortable with foreigners", to put it delicately.
But on the other hand, or maybe outside campus, they are also friendly people. Did you experience this as well?

I don't know if they would really be that mean, but I'm pretty sure that there aren't people Nora's age in universities. It's probably because the entrance exam is pretty difficult, you can see from the dramas that high school students study all day every day for it, and adults don't have time for that. I don't live in Korea, but I have a million relatives there, either in universities or teaching at universities, and I've never heard of anyone older being a student.

yes, I am finding it a bit ott and hard to watch. I can understand feeling isolated at university, at any age, but in my experience its more about indifference than the more active shunning as what is being shown here. It is easy to get isolated at university, especially if you are quieter, but this kind of active distaste is strange. Idk it may be cultural. I do notice a lot of the classrooms are fairly small, as are the class sizes. perhaps that is to do with it - I'm used to larger lecture halls and more people (especially in first year!) and usually there is a big range of people of different ages and from different places for a quieter, unsure person to get lost among. maybe the Korean experience is a bit different?

When I attended a 4-year university here in the US, more mature students were generally treated dismissively by snooty 20-somethings because they didn't want to "babysit" older adults. It's a snooty, misinformed judgment--people from all walks of life have so much knowledge to offer each other--but it can be present depending on the type of environment, especially in pretentious academic cultures.
Attending college as an older adult seems to carry a stigma that one "missed out" on educational opportunities and therefore, is considered less intelligent. As I said, it's an ignorant assumption but I found it believably heartbreaking the treatment that Nora receives from the other students.

I have to agree. While no one would be outright disrespectful, I did hear some mean things from my classmates behind their backs.
But this was more among freshman. I feel by the time we were juniors/seniors, then it was totally different.
Young teens that finally get their "independence" can be really mean.
I would also say there is a difference among ages. Like, everyone was nice to the older students in their 60s and above.
But if you were an older student that was your parents age, then people would treat them differently since I guess they remind them of their parents!

Korea is very age-aware; normally age equates to respect. But at the same time, there's the expectation that you progress through life on a certain timetable... in Misaeng it came up because if people weren't promoted at a certain rate it was a sign of failure (somewhat), and the protagonist (as a mid 20s guy with a GED) seemed to have no options. So, I think it's probably more unusual for someone to go "back to school" like this even though in other dramas I've watched (such as Unkind Women) it was spoken of as something someone planned to do. So I think that "this is a bit strange, lady" attitude has a basis, but is being ramped up extensively for the fish out of water aspect of the show.
I also started to find it unrealistic she didn't already have a smart phone - 38 isn't THAT old and her friend is obviously savvy about them - so I have to conclude that her very controlling husband has been holding her back even on this kind of thing.

I usually don't post here and be warned this will be long:
I am throughly enjoying this drama. It really hits very close to home for me. I had my first kid when I was 16 years old. So, when my first child started college and the last one started kindergarten I found myself without a job, and in a world that had changed so much while I was being a stay at home mom and focusing exclusively in raising 4 children.
I felt very inadequate when trying to get a job with no job experience or advanced education; I decided the only solution was to get myself into college and get a short career at the very least. I enrolled in my daughter's and have been there for almost two years, the challenges have been scary, but worth it.
The moment When Nora was thinking of quitting, then dances and for a second there's a convergence of her past self, her current reality, and a reassurance for her decision made me want to cry. How many times have I wondered if I've made the right choice.
Some of the differences between Nora and my experience are that people have been generally kind, supportive, and helpful. I know in the drama it needs to be played out for the dramatic effect and plot movement, but I just feel that I admire Nora already because I could not have stuck with it if people had treated me half as poorly.
One of the dynamics I find interesting and I'm wondering how it will be played out is that of the hierarchy sustems Korean culture is based on. Nora is older than the students, but some students are sunbaes at university, soo who wins the hierarchical pyramid?
I hop this drama continues to be as endearing. I really enjoy seeing how Nora is being played out. I'm rooting for her. Also, I met the actress at a Disney store near my home 2 Xmas ago and was so awestruck I could not bring myself to do anything other than stare at her like an idiot. She looked beautiful and elegant. I even remember what she was wearing, like the proper creep that I am. Lol!

Thank you for sharing your experience. Whatever decisions we make, we do wonder if we have done right. I feel it is good that you made a decision and committed to it.
You have an interesting question about the dynamics of hierarchy when age and position in ranks are contrary. My guess is that depending on the situation, the positions will flip and switch. No Ra might as a hoobae get advice from a sunbae, but if they were in a non-school situation she'd become ahjumm-moni to them. With Hyun Seok there's going to be lots of banmal because she knew him first as an equal, but in the presence of anyone else he'd have to be Professor.
Which Disney store were you at when you saw Choi Ji Woo-sshi? :)

So, all in all, I understand what No Ra is going through and to me it looks painfully real. However, so far they are only showing the bad, and there is also a very good side: all that fellow students that will not judge you by your age and will be open to share the college experience with you and be friends of yours. I hope this arrives soon because No Ra needs some support out there.

This show is off to a very good start, it is funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I have to say that the h's husband is an a**hole, who doesn't respect or appreciate everything his (soon to be ex) wife has done for him. The son is an a**hole too, who has a horrible attitude towards his mother. I hope that the heroine will end up with the first love, and leave her husband for good.
Though I did wonder why the heroine wanted to go back to college, when she thinks that she only has 6 months left to live. I would think that someone with that prospect would want to tour the world, and go to all the beautiful places they didn't get to see before, not go to college where you have to study. I guess maybe she just wants to experience her youth again? Since her youth was cut short.

Definitely. Like father, like son. Probably sees Dad dissing Mom for 20 years, so he shows no respect too. Dad has been two-timing No Ra...but he didn't have the decency to tell her the truth about another woman in his life.
The bratty son is grating on my nerves. I also don't like his girlfriend who appears too needy too.
I 'm glad she finally had a good experience in college...by her dancing. Everything has been a negative because she has been overwhelmed by going to college without friends or anyone to help her. But most Freshmen are overwhelm the first couple a days in college. She seems like she was transformed. Twenty again...her old self. 1) I really hope she makes friends soon. I can understand the kids being mean but I'm so surprised at all the professors being so prejudiced. When I was in school, you wanted to do group projects with the non-traditional students because they did all the work. But then again, Nora is kind of clueless about all things academia and it looks like the other kids have noticed.

Ack, just need to get this off my chest, I am really enjoying the show, but the blatant ageism in this drama is painful to watch.
One would think, that in the humanities department of a university, you'd find open-minded people who are all there to learn, not to judge people for being older. Personally, I've always admired mature students for their motivation and their willingness to learn, so it's really disgusting to see everyone judge No-ra for her age. How is it that not even one student or professor is speaking up for her?
Also, the gender class made me laugh. Did I have bad subs, or is there really a class in this uni about finding a spouse and being a good spouse?:D

I laughed when I saw her class was on how to be a good spouse. (that's what i got on my subs too.) I can almost (with a long stretch) see this as being a worthwhile class to take, as long as household management is brought into it.
Let me know if I saw this wrong but is her professor for that also the same as who the (soon to be) ex husband is seeing? If it is she is such a hypocrite douche! Although I look to the fireworks in there.

With that viewpoint and her actions out of class she is the last one who should be teaching it. I really doubt she will be a good spouse. This interaction is going to be fun and painful to watch.

Thanks GF!
LOL! I agree that Hyun Seok must have his own personal melodrama playing in his head. Just because he liked and still likes No Ra, he's in first love throes, has nothing good to say about 'first loves' and can't stop himself from being sooo petty and obsessed by No Ra, his female lead... who doesn't even know she's in the script!!!LOL!
I too like No Ra fighting with Hyun Seok as opposed to continually quoting what Woo Chul says to Woo Chul himself, as if it's a means to make him accept that what she says makes sense (because he said it first!). It's great to see that 20 years of being relegated to side-characer-hood has not broken No Ra's spirit and that she can stand up for herself.
It's only with Hyun Seok and possibly Yoon Young that No Ra is more her capable, independent and unconstrained self. That marriage and pregnancy at age 19 really did in her powers of self-reliance and gave too much control over to her husband. As we get into Episode 3, (I was hoping it would begin at Episode 2) I'm wanting to see:
-No Ra showing she is no walkover with the younger student population
- the lousy husband (who got her pregnant and unable to continue school and who dares to be condescending to her now) get a few nasty surprises... like that his wife is studying under his 'lover'.
-Hyun Seok get properly beaten by No Ra and then start to make the melodrama in his mind a reality! :)

Well, in Korea they always judge your for looks, age etc, but in this case, wouldn't them at least be polite to someone older than them? They act like this because she is at their class, so age doesn't matter ? I know ignoring a sunbae is a no no.
Maybe it happens in Korea, but where I live, had so many older people, some that had 3 colleges under their belt and where looking for more, and everybody helped them and talked, teachers would even go out with them and have a beer LOL ~
And my major was Law School, I find it interesting tbh

Okay, No Ra-Soon Nam ship, set sail! Sorry, I missed my Angry Mom couple so I'll just ship these two for now. I so agree! They will definitely be best friends!
The two men are so petty, it's hilarious. They are both in a drama of their own. And the students are just freaking rude. How hard is it to answer a question wtf? I hope it's not like this in real life coz that's totally messed up.
So far, I'm not liking the editing and I'm still not completely on board. I guess it just some lingering OMG feels. Hoping next episodes would be better. Thanks for the recaps!

That relationship between Min Soo and Hye Mi just brought back 'bad' memories. Typical young love angst, storming off, expecting the other person to read one's mind/understand what is upsetting one, being clingy and needy... LOL. Glad all that is behind me. It's good however that Min Soo demanded to know why Hye Mi was upset and that she finally told him. It really takes lots of communication to work; and especially when Min Soo never knew what he was in for when Hye Mi inexplicably played the role of black rose for him. Such a dork, agreeing to date a girl who was a total stranger. Let's see how this 'young love' parallels the renewed acquaintanceship between No Ra and Hyun Seok.

Yes, right! It is not common in Korea because it is hard to pass the college entrance test. WHen we were there, the airport has a " no flying time" for a few hours while the students are taking the college entrance test, same with cars as it is the most important test in the students life....( students studied a lot since they were 6 for this test so they could go to the best university ) in college, you are allowed to be a little crazy....so the story of "twenty again" has some reality to it. It is just a little exaggerated...

I sure would like to know about nora''s past especially when the best friend said her husband cannot be considered her 'oppa'... so how did they meet? How did their relationship progress to her getting pregnant?
Her husband's an ass. He no longer needs a housemaid who will look after his kid ( cos he's old enough to go to college) so now he's out looking for someone who would help with his career?

"I don’t think real students and faculty would so outwardly belittle an ajumma for going to school"
Nope...they will. They make you feel like crap and all that clique rubbish is still there from high school. It's horrible but if you want it enough, you persevere and in the end you realize you came for the education not friendships. Not that it doesn't pinch - it would have been nice to leave with friendships AND a degree - but still you can't lose sight of your goal. The truth is that most people are prejudiced and ALWAYS have preconceived ideas of who people are, their roles and how they should behave.
Sorry for the rant...this drama has brought back so many feelings for me. Thanks for the recap.

I don't think it's so black and white though. There are always cliques and stuff like that but there not everyone is like that. There are plenty of people who don't care.
And even if all students are like that, faculty cannot. Well, in the UK they can't – it's just way, way too risky and utterly unprofessional.

It's strange to me how strange it is for older individuals to attend college in other countries or even colleges. Guess I'm just used to having all types of people from my college. I had classmates who went all the way up to their fifties....
I mean, the oldest college graduate we had in my graduating class was over 70 and the youngest was 19. I'm pretty thankful for how diverse my school is age-wise, ethnic-wise, etc.... Helps that I live in such a diverse community....

She got married because of an accident so I don t think she was "in love" with the guy who became her a**hole husband afterwards.Sharing room with her beastie ballet dancer friend may be a good choice.
Btw, can t wait until Soon Nam falls in love with his ajumma. He will be her very first friend in the uni, and gradually falls in love with her, I can predict this for sure don t ask me why.(@-@). Why can t she be his love interest?! I found no reason.

In Korea do they have online classes?
I kinda wished that she was getting her degree all along so when her husband finally showed his true colors, she was ready to leave.
I will say that the first love plot line does not make much sense to me. If he knew the situation about her being pregnant and getting married, then I don't understand why he is mad. It was not like they had a serious relationship and she cheated on him with the husband. There was no betrayal on her part. I personally will keep you as friend as long as you act like a friend, and don't tell me. If you drop hints and never make the effort to say you like me then I will interpret your feelings as just flirting.
If you get pregnant isn't it a somewhat given that you marry that person in Korea?

I have no idea whether they have online classes (most probably they do), but I guess the point is that No Ra wants to experience what she didn't get to when she was young.
Not sure when this divorce talk happened, but I also speculate that it was recent which made she thought she could somehow turn the situation around by trying to understand her husband more. She had no reason before that, considering that she seemed to be contented being a housewife and didn't think seriously about a career.
Hyun-seok might have read the signs all wrong back then, he might have thought they were in getting-to-know-each-other stage and had all the time in the world to take it slow, which was why it came as such a shock to know she was pregnant and got married. At least to me, it was like he thought the feelings were mutual and felt betrayed when she suddenly left with another guy. We still don't know much so I'm willing to give him benefit of the doubt. I'm also the type who really dislike it when a guy keeps giving hints and leaves it at that, playing cool bla bla. I simply don't think Hyun-seok intended to do that.

Thank you for the recap!
I am surprised by how much I'm enjoying this show. As hard as is it to watch Nora be snubbed and ridiculed by so many people, I'm happy to see that she's not completely incapable of standing up for herself, as evidenced by her interactions with Hyun Seok (and a teeny bit with her husband). As others have said, it's mainly because she views HD as an equal, but it's good to know that spark is still there.
But those kids! Ugh! I normally hate it when characters in a kdrama do this, because I find it's often used in petty power trips or to get away with assy behavior, but I find myself wanting NR to say to them, "I am your elder, and you will speak to me with respect!"
As for Hye Mi, like others after the first episode, I was wondering why that brat of a son gets a pretty girl like her, but after seeing the way she treats NR, I think those two might be perfect for each other. It will be interesting to see what happens when HM learns that NR is Min Soo's mom. I figure one of two things will happen: my preferred, though probably less likely to happen option is that HM is mortified at the way she acted toward her potential future MIL (and maybe even call MS on his disrespectful attitude). My less preferred, but probably will happen option is that HM will ridicule MS for having that "Crazy ajumma" in school be his mother, thus causing more trouble between him and NR.
Either way, I'm excited to see where this show goes next!

I wonder why Nora seems to have not much savings. And why doesn t she want a divorce while being insulted and looked down on like that?
And how do they devide the assets after divorce in Korea? In my country all the assets that a man and a woman get after they got married must be devided 50-50 when they divorce.
Jerk husband seems to be a successful professor, so I suppose they are rather wealthy. If Korean law is similar to my country's, she will be set free and can use money to build her own life. Why is she so sad? I don t have a clue.

If I may hazard a guess... (this is more from RL than from the show) ... it is hard to make a big life change even when the current situation is far from pleasant. Sometimes, a person's identity and self-worth are tied to the role of wife-mother. No Ra has put her heart and soul into the marriage and bringing up the son for whom she gave up her own education. She was prepared to bear all along and into the future, the kind of treatment she was receiving. She had probably gotten used to it and if there was no big upheaval, it would be more comfortable to continue in that family than to tear herself away. Her going to college was to try to 'fit in' with her tertiary level educated family, so as to be more accepted by them, and to continue as a family. The break up of family to her would be the one thing she would not want, spelling perhaps failure, greater loss of identity (than what she seems to have lost already) and separation from loved ones.
All the alimony or half share of properties that would come to her after a divorce would not make up for her loss. She is also aware that she cannot 'win' an argument against her husband who is adamant about getting a divorce, and has reluctantly given in to buy some time to get her education, but she can tell that it's not going to work and she thinks she will die. Thus her sadness.
Maybe finding out about her husband's two-timing even before the divorce will be the wake-up call to get her out of her depression and into re-inventing herself. That will be a sight to be seen. :)

I checked UK statistics.
Mature students are defined as anyone over the age of 21.
Apparently, at undergraduate level 30.2% are mature students. 39.9% of these are between 21-24 (so, really the same age), 19.8% are 25-29, and the remaining 40.3% are 30 and older (these are stats from the National Union of Students). I didn't look for further stats, but I would guess at postgraduate level numbers are even higher for the 30+ age group – which isn't insignificant, because some final year classes might be attended both by undergraduates and postgraduates.
I dropped out of my first degree, so after that I was always a mature student (went back at 21). I'm doing a PhD now, and 30+ mature students are everywhere. I tutor undergraduate and MA students, and there are always some that are in their 50s, 60s, 70s. I can think of so many examples, so easily....

4. Hyun Seok finding out she's in the midst of a divorce and her discovering his feelings for her.
5.Becoming besties with headphones guy.
6. The son discovering the divorce and that BOTH parents are at his school. (I actually will feel really sorry for him then and give him alot more slack, but right now he's a typical teenage brat.)

ad 4. There's a part of me that wishes she'd get out of her marriage and not walk straight into another relationship. She's been dependent on her husband for twenty years, and has built her whole identity and being around that. I mean it's great that someone has feelings for her and I'm sure they'll make Hyun-seok be a great guy and "perfect" husband for her in the end (if he's indeed the male lead) but in real life if she didn't actually take time to be herself and function independently, she'd probably just walk into another relationship like the one she already had.

Oh, I'm definitely not saying she should walk straight into another relationship, no matter how good the guy, but how she reacts to him and discovers for herself that she can be more than just a mom or wife for someone. It's more along the lines as he sees her of someone who has value and worth, along with being a female - with all that entails. I think she's been an asexual robot for too long and her younger self shows that she's not.

I have no problem if she walks into another relationship after proper Self Exploration:) I believe besides discovering the very AWESOME NO RA hidden in her , she should experience that she is worthy of an woman and never deserve the treatment she got from her husband. It was her husband who is a jerk, because even if she would not be so called "highly educated" there are men who can respect and love what she is. I think she needs to realize that because before the cancer incident her sole drive for pursuing study was to please or satisfy her husband

<Flower girl Park Seung-hyun walks right up and claims the books, since she put them all on hold through her library app.
This wouldn't work at my uni. You could do this, but pretty much all core books for a course will be available in multiple copies and a good chunk of those will be restricted one-week loans only. And a few will be reference-only.
Furthermore, for every item in the library, you can do recall, meaning whoever borrowed it has to return it within a week of the recall. (Which means, you can play a nice game if two people want the same book.)
Plus, increasingly books are available as "digital loans" (though I will say this is still far from complete) and anything shorter – articles, individual chapters – will available in the (digital) course handbook. Journal articles are generally through digital access (uni subscription to databases or to specific publishers' materials).
I hope the writers have done their research properly, because I would be surprised if not at least some of these options were available in Korea also. (Of course Nora would have to learn about these options – here in the UK they do obligatory library orientation sessions for first years that would cover these kind of things.)

Yeah, it's bizarre that reserved books were still sitting on the shelves like that. And how can there only be one copy of introduction level class?
I'm not sure how much research the writers and production team have put in. (I noticed a typo on Woo-chul's resume when Hyun-suk was looking at it, they hilariously spellt his university name wrong!) Hopefully these are just beginning errors, it would be nice to see a realistic portrayal of university life. I can't remember ever watching a K-drama which focuses around the main character going to university, but I am absolutely loving it here.

True, reserved books are normally already at the loan desk for you to pick up!
It depends a bit on the uni how many copies there are, I don't know how Korean unis compare universally. When I lived in Central America, once I tried to get books from a uni library and they only had one copy. BUT the librarian took me to the copy shops right behind the library to get a cheap "clone" of the book.... because that's what everyone did!
I really hope they did their research, or that even some of them were at uni within the last five years, because I think the premise itself has a lot of potential. But it feels a bit clumsy – they appear to be using exaggeration for laughs, but I think this could be a really good drama if they went for more realistic. I can already see that No-ra will get scolded (possibly in front of the whole class) for being the only one not to have the books, but that's just too predictable. There are so many ways for her to get hold of books, plus professors don't really care about these things. This isn't high school...
