Right, so I just watched the first episode of Oh My Venus. And, despite disliking Shin Mina-a and So Ji-sub as actors, I have to say that they are beautifully cast in this. Sometimes actors just need the right roles not to suck - or, generally good advice for any Kdrama actors, stay out of Hong sister dramas! Always overhyped and underperforming, they consistently damage the actors reputations!
Anyway.... back to Oh My Venus. The characters are interesting and there might even be a plot at some point.
Only negative point - Jung Gyu-Woon has been cast in virtually the same role he had in Birth of a Beauty. Watching him causes a certain amount of memory overlap, which is distracting.
And there is one laughable point - Shin Min-a cast as a beauty. Ha! Completely unbelievable. However, I like her very much in the incarnation of pudgy lawyer, so it's easy to overlook.

I think Shin Mina is attractive enough. I don't know whether she has any work done but at least she doesn't fit any SK plastic surgery template that I've noticed. Honestly, some of the actresses and idols literally look alike to me.
This drama didn't pass my filters. Maybe someday I'll be in the mood to give it a try.

I guessed correctly regarding how to cope with immortality.
Every 100 years, Boy falls asleep. He forgets everything that happened and starts over again. Thus,
1. No flashbacks for us audience.
2. No past memories haunting him. It also explains why he is much more of a wise guy than a wise man. I've noticed that for an immortal, he's not particularly experienced or knowledgeable.

The appearance of Boy's ex, a fox spirit, actually a fox jing, threw me off. He knew their relationship was several hundred years ago. But, he also said that she sought him out 50 years ago. She must have filled him in at that time.
Too bad that the memory wipe will happen very soon.
1. Boy and Warlord have solidified their bromance.
2. Boy and Prissy Taoist Priest were developing a more lighthearted budding bromance.
3. Any combination of them together is funny. That brief bit about urine from a 30-yr old virgin man and the ensuing prank???
I figured even when Boy & Girl weren't going to last, at least he still has Warlord and Prissy. But nope. Just "I TOLD YOU I AM NOT A CHICKEN!" jing.

You mean the fox jing said it was not a chicken jing?
Boy had an ex gf and forgot about it and so 'married' the other girl? Is the latter still around anywhere?
Is fox going to hang around with the bromancers?

Certain jing can assume many forms. Don't why it took the form of a chicken. Being a male, it should be at least be a rooster. Later, it took the form of a white cat.
Every 100 years for many times, (chicken) jing guarded sleeping Boy. Boy finish the journal started by (now deceased) Girl of what was most important to him during most recent 100 years. As a jing, it didn't understand the importance of memory, even the painful ones. Jing took the journal and Boy's wedding ring while he slept.
Problem was Boy left Warlord to sleep. This makes no sense. If Boy really wanted to regain his memory of Girl and Warlord, Warlord would be the best person to fill in the blanks.
Anyway, leaving would have been unimportant if Boy Rip Van Winkled it. But, he only slept for a year or two. Poor Warlord.

@Snickers?
So for some reason (do you know the reason?) the chicken jing decided to guard Boy... and for reasons unknown, decided that Boy should do without his journal and wedding ring?
From what you say, I gather that Boy wants to regain some memories?
Boy abandoned warlord and went to sleep? Then he woke up without memories?
Warlord is practically immortal too since he's been around and stays around Boy? But warlord is now alone after the 2 years Boy slept?
You are right about it not making sense. :D

Warlord is a mortal man. Boy, Girl and Warlord were living together. Girl was killed not long before Boy must sleep. Warlord put out an APB, wanted posters with large reward and even an arrest warrant to try to find Boy. I can't figure out why Boy decided to go to an inn somewhere else to sleep.
Boy only said that he had a bit of a history with Chicken, who agreed to guard Boy while he slept. Chicken thought he was doing Boy a favor: "Why do you want to have such painful memories?" Makes me wonder whether Chicken took such liberty in the past.
Chicken seemed to be powerful enough to destroy Witch but probably would have cost him a lot. Boy used trapping spell to pull Witch into the pit of an unfathomable all-essence-sucking being. He lost a leg. No biggie.
I suppose Boy's sleeping and forgetting is like reincarnation except he gets to keep the same body. Warlord had to live with the memory of Boy and Girl.

November 20, 2015 at 4:35 PM
Then we don't have any more warlord story? He never regains power. He just thinks the Boy ran off while the Girl died... does he think Boy killed Girl?
So we are back to the question of... what is the overall objective here... for Boy to regain memories? For Boy to find another reincarnation of Girl? For Boy to become mortal and die and find happiness in the hereinafter without tramping on the earth? Is the romance the objective or someone's plans getting fried or fulfilled?

November 20, 2015 at 5:15 PM
Boy's work with the young fox jing helped Warlord gain employment with a major warlord. Warlord threw a lavish Western-style wedding for Boy and Girl- the most expensive of everything, including the flower boy and girl. I was like: Flower boys and girls are for hire?
Later Warlord was given the necessary resources to take back his "county." Boy and Girl moved back home. Warlord kept finding excuses to try to stay with them.
Witch and the man who overthrew Warlord killed Girl. Warlord took good care of Boy. When Boy left, Warlord figured that using the law could cast the widest possible net.

November 20, 2015 at 5:26 PM
I'm not sure there is an objective to the story. One outcome is Warlord's "better" nature was resurrected by his experience with Boy and Girl.
I guess the moral of the story is that there is never enough time for certain things. Meaningful fateful encounters/connections all eventually end. A person won't be the same afterwards.

November 20, 2015 at 6:14 PM
So the moral of this long show might be that nothing lasts forever, so do your best while you can and instead of clinging on to people or power or something, let go peacefully at the right time. I must look it up... sounds a bit like Buddhism and not having cravings or attachments so as to attain peace and have no more suffering.

November 20, 2015 at 6:33 PM
Chinese lore is based on elements from Buddhism, Taoism and more ancient stuff.
So, angst-free romance between Boy and Girl is good. Boy meets Girl. Boy likes Girl at first sight. Boy quickly comes to love Girl due to some intangibles. Girl quickly comes to love Boy due to more tangible reasons. Boy is almost always cheerful with Girl. Girl is never angry with Boy for more than a few hours. They were together, and happy, for the most part, for as long as they can. That is, together less than a year.
Kdramas make people play all sorts of games to get together. That can be very irritating to watch.

The ex lover fox jing from several hundred years back only showed up briefly. Boy asked her to help save a younger, less powerful, fox jing.

Fox jing is similar to Gumiho. Gumiho has nine tails. In Chinese lore, fox jing is usually represented by fox with white fur. It is almost always assumes the form of a human female.

I watched BOF both on viki and DF. "Almost Paradise" plays more often on viki's version than on DF version.
The song playing in the beginning of Wu Xin on DF is the song playing at the end of Wu Xin on viki. The song playing at the end of Wu Xin on DF is "brand new." This new song is not a good fit.
Why do viki and DF have different versions of the same drama?

Oh My Venus: In the conversation I had with the beanies meet-up last night, we found out and were appalled that the way Venus is pronounced by Koreans, has the 'v' sounding like a 'p'. I do not understand why they must use the English version of a word that is so hard (for them) to pronounce and which makes a title sound so wrong.
Rename it as "Goddess of Love and Beauty" or something or just never pronounce the title or get someone who can say it right to pronounce it!!!! LOLOL!

High-end Crush: Not much of a story in it so far and the 2nd episode is not subbed, but I figured I could just FFD it to see what happens in the next 15 minutes.
It was 15 minutes of many tropes and no story except the accidental or enforced skinships and growing awareness of JIW character (Choi Se Hoon) that he is rather attracted to the JSY character (Yoo Yi Ryung).
Maybe it will be better when you can marathon it all with subs, but it did not really make sense in parts such as the high energy somersaults of the sidekick to Se Hoon as he kept giving Yi Ryung hi-5s. ?
However I can say that JIW actually looks very attractive in this show. Better even than in 49 Days which was when I first saw him and liked him a little.

@Snickers?
Let's see... to add to what I wrote in OT #422 Comment 22, ... I found that it was hard to finish any one topic or thread of conversation because so many things kept coming up and the thoughts were interrupted. We had so much to say and 3 hours just wasn't enough.
We talked not only about kdramas and k-ent people but about ourselves and our likes and our families. I know that both the times that I met with beanies, I felt it would be great to have more individual conversations too, to get to know each person more. It was just like being on a chat line where multiple people spoke at the same time and some points got lost in the thread... this analogy just occurred to me LOL!
I like our thread here where it's easier to find the last thoughts and we can continue from where we left off rather than be cut off. The group too has that advantage and the additional aspect of being organised in topics so it's very much easier to continue.
But back to the gathering... we were so similar in our opinions, and yet so different in other ways. Oh an interesting thing that was mentioned was that a friend who was also into k-ent and a fan of a group was able to email the Korean manager of that group. They were actually in contact maybe as acquaintances. Yet, the great culture shock came when friend told manager that she would not be going for the group fan event of some kind ... and the manager's reply was that she should not call herself a fan. It seems to be an All or Nothing interpretation!!! We were all shocked by that. Would you interpret it the manager's way too?
That may account for the craziness of Korean fans and the paparazzi culture, which is almost totally lacking over here... we have in fact celebrities from overseas coming to live here as a safe haven for themselves and their families because there is no paparazzi. They can bring their kids to schools around here and people may recognise them, but they don't get accosted.

The manager is speaking from a business prospective. Obviously the more die-hard fans the better. It's usually not free to attend a fan meeting. I looked up ticket prices of JCW's fan meeting in Shanghai this past summer. The "worst" seats cost at least $70 USD. I would like to know how the proceeds were split.
I'm tend to be removed from the fan-mentality. I know vaguely current fads because escape knowing is hard. I know paparazzi are also major pests of certain celebs in the U.S. The sequence of events leading up to Princess Diana's death was a classic example.

The other thing we spoke of and here again we were in agreement, was that we would not bother to buy a certain brand of products just in the hopes of winning tickets to see JCW in Singapore. I would feel so manipulated. Just let people buy tickets already! But they had to tie it to product purchases to raise sales. I suppose it will work but not on at least 3 Singapore Beanies.

On a different tack... at an open eatery this morning, I was witness to the death of a poor pigeon. It flew into the blades of a fan and fell dead right next to the high chair of a toddler, who for some reason had seen it fall. Poor child was scared after that. The adults stayed calm and the bird was removed quickly but there was a pool of blood on the floor.
The thing was the bird had just flown past my table and hit the fan just next to where I sat. It happened in a blink of an eye and the persons who shared the table me was also shocked. The bird could have fallen into someone's food!!!!

Come to think of it. Birds, I assume especially male birds, do intentionally fly into each other.
This week or last week. I heard squawkings from high up in the sky. A couple crows were chasing a hawk. I've seen such behavior before. This time, the crows more or less rammed the hawk. Aerial contact. Then another crow joined in. 3 to 1. The hawk must not want to give up whatever it had its eyes on because it took a while for the hawk to vacate the area.
I've also seen 2 sparrows flying fighting. They both landed on the road. One pinned the other to the pavement. A lady driver saw them and stopped blocking traffic. So I walked in front of the birds. They noticed me and flew off.

@Snickers?
I'd think the lack of participation will be an issue because people may say they would like to celebrate... but they have not seriously set aside days off and money to travel and for accommodation. If the group were all easy to contact at a moment's notice and responsive, it would also be easier. I find that is not the case now.
In theory it's possible. Pretty daunting in practice.
First thing is to find out if there are enough people willing to do something bigger than just wishing to celebrate.
The only thing I can think of that might work is a situation similar to what we have with @Divyrus. Because she planned to come out to a place that already had people in contact with her and each other, it was easier to at least get the people who were on the spot to come together.
When we are considering that there are folks in Vietnam, Hong Kong, maybe Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore... there must be a mutual agreement on meeting place and date at least and plans to do something.

What would be needed:
All appropriate beanies giving me their email and contact numbers.
Some contacted beanies responding positively

It's not like we've never had heavy wet snow. This time it weighed down a lot of shrubs and bushes. (Luckily the big tree was pruned and dead branches cleaned up last week.) Branches and snow collapsed the netting of the feral cat confinement area. The cats were warming their butts in the garage and didn't notice. It's been getting cold here with intermittent rain. I read that we are preparing in case we get flooding in the usual places (some of which includes the the tourist belt), especially during high tide. The NE monsoon is upon us I guess. I had to go look it up. Cannot recall my geography!
I heard that we are supposed to be slowly putting into place the Smart City concept so that rain drain-off can take place automatically among other things. It's a nice concept but will take quite a lot of doing. Fortunately this is a small country.

Snow in November is normal. What is unusual is this storm quickly formed grabbing Gulf of Mexico moisture and dumped very heavy wet snow, aka heart-attack snow, on some of us. Chicago and south of Chicago probably fared better.
Two limbs broke from my neighbor's crab apple tree due to the weight of the snow.
This is the first accumulating snow of the season and my snow-shoveling muscles haven't had any practice. Just a tad bit concerned about my fast pounding heart. After about 70% done, the heart stopped pounding. My body "woke up." The last pile of snow that I wasn't going to shovel because I didn't think I could do it turned out to be a breeze.
Snickers and her sister were sitting on heating pads inside the garage. They get fed twice a day in the garage. I'll probably shovel out paths in the backyard for them tomorrow. Snickers is more willing to tough out snowy/cold and deep snow. She's also the one I am more worried about escaping.

Apparently, we got about a foot of snow. Most in November for over a century. A good amount must have melted on the warmer (temperature above freezing) pavement because I didn't shovel that deep. Backyard was definitely deeper.

So now you have to worry about slipping on the slush or ice?
That was my experience in that short trip to Japan. The falling snow was great but the aftermath was something to see. I recall not envying the inhabitants. I had a bit of problem not slipping on the way back to the bus.
I was intrigued by a carpark where there was water running out of several holes in the ground. It was to melt away the snow. One of the carpark attendants was shovelling away water and ice.

November 21, 2015 at 11:23 PM
When it's deep freeze, ice is not too slippery. When it's around freezing, ice is very slippery. You learn how to negotiate icy surfaces. Slush is no match for a good pair of water-proof boots .
There are various types of pavement salt that does fair to good job melting ice. Damaging to pavement and plants though.
I had to salt the sidewalk in front of the house. My neighbor was kind enough to snow-blow the sidewalk. Snow blower does not clear heavy wet snow well. The residue quickly turns to ice. Shoveling usually clears the snow better than snow blower but it takes much longer and lots of energy.
As an owl, and when there is time, I shovel sidewalk in front of my neighbors' houses, and occasionally sections of driveways. It's a major part of my exercise in winter.

DF is releasing Wu Xin five episodes at a time. The Chinese subs were completely replaced by English subs.
My guess is DF will do similarly with High-End Crush subs. And, 15-min episodes might be stitched together to make more conventional-lengthed episodes.

I was trying 'Twenty Years Old', a web drama that has been stitched to be 4, 45 minute-long episodes. Watched the first 45 minutes and it's nothing great but not so bad either. Just a show for some fluff and cute.
On OT, some were recommending "Noble, My Love", which seems to have the same premise ie girl's romantic wishful thinking enacted in the web drama which may not make sense. I wonder if I can stomach two such shows at the same time. To watch is to experiment with my self!!!

Some people at DF are recommending going to viki to watch Wu Xin because viki has all the episodes. I'm conflicted whether I should warn people that:
1. The video quality at viki is lower. The lower quality video actually caused me to misunderstand something.
2. Not all episodes have been 100% subbed and/or quality checked. The hilariously wrong subs will be confusing or total nonsense to people who don't understand Mandarin.
There are several viki fan channels of cdramas adapted from famous wuxia novels. If I start, it will be "See you next year!"

@ Snickers?
There is that too...
I was thinking that with idols since music and a group is usually involved, having their group sing the love song with the MV and giving exposure to the whole group as opposed to hiring a full crew for weeks to create a web drama might have been more cost effective.... they've done that many times before.... perhaps the popularity of MVs with romance tropes has waned? Perhaps in a 5-minutes long song not that many tropes can be explored?
Or the fans want an extended version of the MV in a web drama? Yeah, that's probably it.

I marathoned Noble, My Love... at least it was not by idols. Still fluffy and tropey and parts of it too sudden or rushed to make sense... well each episode was 15 minutes, after all. I felt that given the angst the show wanted to include, it should have been a 16 episode drama of 1-hour per episode. It would have done the rounding off at the end more justice and enabled them to add a couple of conversations that seem to me to have been left out.
There were sufficient dogs and cats to make the veterinary hospital look viable, however aside from contributing to the first meeting of the OTP, they did not have much of a role. The animals were probably chosen for their cuteness.
As mentioned in the OT, the male lead (Sung Hoon) in Noble is the sidekick in Oh My Venus. He looks like a cousin of mine LOL! I kept being distracted by that thought. The female lead (Kim Jae Kyung) was adequate but her character was too submissive in spite of her original fighting spirit. It was fun enough without being great.

I felt that she was too easily browbeaten by the guy even before she puddled... like, why agree to sign such an unfair contract ... ok he probably did threaten her, but still, she did not put up a fight. And don't ask why a guy who threatens is still so attractive that she decided that she liked him - this happened quite suddenly too, so I was mildly surprised.
The fact that they would be running out of time if they kept up the fighting was the thing that kept the surprise mild. A more gradual transition for some of the changes that had to take place would have been better.
I felt that I was supposed to be watching a longer episode but it was strangely edited and left out bits. That's why I was thinking it'd be an appropriate 16 episode series of 45-60 minutes each.

Romance of the Condors (2014)
I read the series as a kid. I don't remember much but it seems like this adaptation upped the noble idiocy body count. Some characters' deaths were definitely re-written to confirm to below.
Two ways to die:
1. Kill yourself or let yourself be killed to "save" your love.
2. After your love dies, kill your self.
So far (ep. 27, 20:50 mark):
Death via 1 - 4 women and 1 man
Death via 2 - 1 woman and 1 man
In future episodes there should be:
a. Cousins, both women, die via 1 for the same man.
b. An attempt at 1 by a woman.
c. An attempt at 2 by the man from a. due to b.
d. An attempt at 2 by a girl due to c.
All these women are supposed to be rare beauties. Maybe it's some kind of natural selection to keep rare beauties rare ?

The word romance in the title follows the definition
Time period would be fit with (western) Middle Ages. The focus is on a (2).
As for a (3), it has fairly sedate love stories of numerous characters. There is plenty of "cheese" in the forms of noble idiocy that I've mentioned.
One main driver of the story is the iconoclast love between a boy/young man and his female master who was 4 year senior. Set in very turbulent historical era, starting when he was about 11 and she was 15. He became her student when she was 16. The couple spent at least 70% of the time apart. After living long enough, I have started to feel that there's truth in the philosophy that all things are related in some way. I don't know where I got that from, but ultimately all came from one source and we find our fulfillment in returning to it.
Religious beliefs and how they influence architecture sounds normal, especially in times/places where the faith of the people permeates all areas. In Bali the roofs and shapes, door 'guards' and ornamentation each had a meaning often to do with Hinduism or a related philosophy. Nice place, Bali. I don't mind going back.

The next 3 days are the stress-inducers. I'm going to do some training and I've some doubts about how the application will hold up, or if it is too slow or if I remembered to cover enough bases. The people I'm training are also likely to toss out tough questions that I cannot quite anticipate. Quite a lot of things are out of my hands. I had planned it to be a 4-5 day training course but the client asked to scrunch everything into 3 days. I've still got to keep my Mon and Tues freeish in case I've got to go back because we cannot complete enough in 3 days.... then I already off to Perth!!!!
I did start a little packing, and now have to figure if there's some stuff I seriously need to buy. I heard of the flies and sun at this time of the year... so repellent and sunscreen is already packed. Have to standby the emergency supplies for all kinds of minor ailments. I should go get that done now while I remember!!!

The ingredients of an insect repellent may not work on certain species of flies. I know the type we use here containing DEET was totally useless against horse flies.
It may be better to ask Perth locals what repellent works best after you arrive. Or, maybe ask at the next OT.
Good luck with training. Hope your trainees are the clever type who can pick up things quickly and figure things out.

About repellent... my colleague came back from Perth herself, just last week and lent me the repellent that she got from there.
She said the flies are not like the ones we have here, but are big and seem to like people and so are very tiresome. I heard that people wear hats with screens or hats with stuff that flaps about so that when they move or toss their heads, the flies are swatted away!!! LOL! What an experience this is going to be. Super hot and super fly-sie!

I've packed stuff in case we have nose, throat, tummy ailments or headaches/fever. When I was in Bali, I had a cold or headache that did not go away and we had to walk around to find a pharmacy or shop that sold the right medication.
I have lately been having headaches quite a bit but fortunately not in the last 4 days!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I continue to be fine for the next few weeks or ... well... as long as possible!
Because of the headaches, I got my eyes checked to get a new pair of spectacles. They were sent back to the manufacturer by the optometrist, and so I've got to wait another 3 days before I can collect them. However, I feel ok lately. Less eye strain feeling, even though I've been peering for hours at my PC.

From what I heard, it's usually intestinal ailments due to one's intestinal flora not being accustomed to new food/water. They usually tell U.S. travelers in Mexico to only drink bottled water and not to eat like the locals, especially salads.
I had no such issues when I traveled abroad.

Unstable internet connection. Better now than a couple hours earlier but dropped for a few seconds just now.
Everything was fine at 6:30am. I had to make a phone call in the afternoon but the phone line was really noisy. So, I tried using VOIP and found my internet connection spotty. Although connection comes in with the phone line, this is the first time that noisy phone affects internet.
Internet technician showed up but couldn't diagnose the line issue. He thought the problem was a bad modem. The line technician won't show until Friday.
Absolutely NO ONE from the company knows whether work being done somewhere might be causing all this. The company doesn't notify their own field technicians or customers.

This reminds me that I have yet to call the contractor to fill up the hole in the drains and cover them over so that no creatures make their homes in my drains. The drains have cracked because apparently the garden is sinking... what with the piling work that was done around my area because there's endless building going on. My place was rebuilt just 8-9 years' ago and already so much cracking and dis-colouration.... looks 20 years old!
The piling was to build flats/apartments about a block away from me... The area is going to be even more populated and crowded than it is now with new residents coming in.
Diagonally across the road there's a new shopping and living complex. It is also looking almost complete, therefore there will also be more people about in that part and from that building.
And of course there'll be more cars!!! I'm thankful that I can walk to wherever in my area and so do not need to find a parking lot. The trail of cars waiting to get a space can be scary long.

Yes, we usually have to go the client's site to do training, but most other support work can be done remotely. Everything's in the cloud, but the personal touch and the fact that it's easier for a couple of us to go rather than for the 10-12 of them to come, plus that usually they want to see the performance of the product they bought at their site, makes it pretty much an on-site event.
The client has taken up our application and their staff require training in it. However, as is the case in most of my experiences, the session becomes a time when each person tries to figure out how to work it in the way they want and start making requests to change the software. They also take the opportunity to discuss all the ramifications of their workflow with each other, the policies and procedures etc in the light of having the new application, at the training, instead of taking it offline.
Because our project manager had been pretty liberal in agreeing to what they said they want, and I really cannot recall what is included in the tender document, it's hard to know whether to say yes or no. We had to just record what they asked for, even if it sounded really out of the normal and out of the tender. We'll let the manager deal with the many requests.
It was tiring listening to/understanding so many questions and explanations on why they wanted what they wanted and how we had to change the application to suit them. I told my colleague it wasn't actually training (except in name), but a very lengthy demonstration session. Usually we do demos before the purchase is made, and it takes no more than an hour or 2 with questions... but this was a 'demo' that lasted 2 days! Usually also, we get to do 70-80% of the talking, but not this time.
The upside was that they've said their piece and we are considered done with 'training' for now so I get to rest tomorrow!!!

@ Snickers?
What do you mean by 'scope creep'? Is that someone who tries to expand the scope of works that has been put down in the contract?
Delivery is usually a matter of time. Ultimately a lot of enhancements can be done and there are new things to deliver, but it may not be at the time the client wants. However if it's not possible to develop something, the client has to be 'forced' to accept it.
This client is particularly difficult in this area. So my colleague and I decided to not 'argue'.

We know we have a difficult customer on our hands, therefore the scope creep is likely but also likely to be tamped down from time to time. It happens a lot ... ie clients do try to ask for more. This time, it's more extreme than in my past experiences.

Learning monads is apparently a necessary evil in learning functional programming. So far, I get that monad is a high-level abstraction. As a literal-minded person, I am not good at abstracting after a certain point. (Abstract Algebra class was a pain in the butt. Maybe the professor was simply not good at teaching it. The "back" of my mind took at least a decade to arrive at a certain level of comprehension.)
Searching for examples and explanations ultimately leads to "a monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors, what's the problem?" http://james-iry.blogspot.com/2009/05/brief-incomplete-and-mostly-wrong.html

Something more concrete: Why do SK actors (men) cry a lot more than American or Chinese actors, is it some kind of a reflection of culture?

I know that our Singaporean boys/men want to appear macho and not like sniveling babies so they try not to cry ever.
I read or heard that in the Japanese and Korean cultures, crying is necessary to show one's sincerity when one is apologizing, especially in public, and maybe especially if one is high up in position. For eg. a criminal CEO has to bow before his shareholders and media cameras and/or staff, and apologize and cry some copious tears. If there are no tears, then the apology has less impact and is less convincing. Could be more so in Japan.
It might also depend on what is being cried over. Guilt and wanting to be forgiven is supposed to elicit strong emotions if one is sincere, but one is expected to remain stoic if one is badly treated. Crying over the latter situation will not look cool.
I have the impression that the macho, cool and manly image is not affected by tears in Korean culture, if something is worth crying over.

I always thought Japanese men were supposed to be stoic. I know about the corporate CEO apology routine but I've never seen tears when a CEO did so in front of U.S. media. I guess unless it's about death, U.S. men are not supposed to shed too many tears. Maybe a few drops. In the past few years, U.S. actors seem to have been shedding a few more.
I've seen some of SS501 members (all SK male >= 19 years old) cuddling. JCW and YSH holding hands at a media event during WDBS run. Those were collectively a culture shock.

High-End Crush
Remember. Although not what I would normally watch, and the new 9-min teaser really wasn't too enticing, I'll give it a shot. I feel the plot will be unnecessarily convoluted, and obvious.
Meanwhile:
Wu Xin is doing well with DF viewers who can handle supernatural silly fun. About 150 out 157 ratings are 5 out of 5.
Also, might as well follow pretty Chen Xiao around a bit. His acting seems awkward at times. (If I noticed, it is not subtle!) But, that could be due to editing, directing and/or voice dubbing.

If I ever intend to watch High-End Crush, I'll also have to wait for the subs. I tried Ep 3 without subs and it did not make much sense. Other than looking at JIW who looks nicer there than in other shows, there was nothing much to hold me. All the episodes seem to be out but only the first is subbed.
Out of sheer curiosity, I tried another web-drama... Dream Knight. It's a Got7 vehicle with some other idols appearing too, I think. Also seems like a waste of time. The female lead (Song Ha Yoon) was in Sweden Laundry and she did not wow me there or here either.
Imaginary Cat is the only one currently showing with any potential, from what I have seen, to be a good show.

As far as idol vehicles go EXO Next Door (JB mentioned it) might be "better" than Dream Knight.
Remember follows Village so it should come out next Wed. DF will be on the normal 1-day delay.
I'm watching Sound of the Desert. The drama adaption must have edited out almost everything from the lead heroin's background. She was raised by wolves! It was a stretch to believe that she could learn to read & write expertly and understand poetry & "Art of War" in the couple of years that she was with people. Her deep comprehension of music is simply unbelievable.
Oh well. The setting is Han Dynasty which was the counterpart of the Roman Empire at the time. Let the "history" lessons continue. Too bad vast majority of the architecture (except for the Silk Road rock-cut structures) in the Han Dynasty was made of wood.

Since I do not read or watch Japanese manga or shows, I'm only guessing... but the strange and suddenly interspersed animated segments in a web drama, are probably a nod to the fact that the story came from manga or anime?

Seems like an adolescent/young people thing. Why does that remind me of structure of Sesame Street or other live-action children's education programs? Also, animations take time from actual "acting" and preceding rehearsals. First, to cover for inexperience in acting. Second, idols tend to be so busy in their first few years they barely sleep.

I did get down to trying out EXO Next Door at least for comparison with the other web dramas, and yes, it is better than the ones I've seen so far. It has a coherence in the 'story' if we can call it much of a story, but it's good enough for 18 episodes of 15+ minutes each (4.5 hours +).
My only grumble is that the male lead was give the 'jerk' character, opposite the not-too-smart and easily embarrassed female lead.... an overused trope. And the guy was played by Chan Yeol, who was the mildest creature in Roommate!
I was thinking that instead of being a 'jerk-character', who frequently and without obvious reasons, hurts the poor girl, how about having a cool and enigmatic male lead who intrigues without offending. That's not too difficult to act as well!
The female lead, Moon Ga Yeong was not too bad and I realised on looking her up, that I have not watched the stuff she was in or did not notice her much when I did, because she probably played only side characters. It seems she's still pretty young and may be able to do much greater things in her career.

Are you packing bathroom tissues (aka toilet paper)? When my uncle's job transferred him to China back in the early/mid 1990's, my aunt packed a luggage full of toilet papers. They were used to the soft, double-ply kind and were afraid of the rough paper-like kind (from what I heard) in China.
All except one of the U.S.-based airlines charge extra to check the luggage. A few even charge for carry-on. So, some people have learned to pack only absolute necessities that fit within bags that fit under seats.

The only time the kids think to pack toilet paper is when they are 'forced' to go for adventure camp or a little bit of rough-it-out camping... that's where the kids are in a campsite shared by many groups. Toilets and shower facilities are shared too. So it's bring your own everything.
When we are going to be spending nights in a hotel, we don't even have to think of most toiletries. Because we might be particular, we do bring our own stuff, but toilet paper is never on the list. Tissues in packets for carrying around, yes... toilet paper, no.
Decades ago I travelled to the States for 2 weeks and I could live out of one bag, surprisingly medium in size. My friends were impressed. Nowadays, comfort is important and so I bring extras and things for just-in-case.... so the bag is full. And nowadays there are all the equipment!!! Everyone's cameras, phones, a tablet, a WiFi connector .... therefore charges, spare batteries, wires, adaptors for plugs, even a multi-plug extension. There will be 5-6 pieces of equipment that need to be charged. Heavy and I always worry we might leave something behind!
From experience, we need lots of water that's cooled enough to pour into water bottles to carry around, so we need spare containers for pouring water into for cooling down while we boil more water to make drinks with. Also hotel cups are tiny, miserable things... so we have our own cups and cutlery too. It all piles up to being a lot of stuff for just 4-5 days!!!!
Luckily I enjoy packing and travelling. It's all part of the fun. We even enjoy the plane ride so that's part of the holiday. If the latter two were not on the fun checklist, I'd check out of holidays overseas!!!

Something about NIF is iffy to me. I prefer saqeuk with a lot of fighting not so much politics. The politics/plotting/scheming/palace-intrigues of that era would be more snooze-inducing than Sound of the Desert. Had a nice walk around and saw a sunset. We were happy to be back in the hotel to rest and do our usual stuff. We were up at 4am. Good thing was we had more family time doing our stuff but in the same room for a change. Good to just chill together.

McDonald's fish fillet sandwich was a reliable backup when I was in Europe. Back then I still ate food made from stuff that swims.
What is Singapore food? Chicago has a couple "Singapore" restaurants. None out in the suburbs.

Back after an interminable bus trip. Nice scenery but not much variety. Gotta rest!

Marathoned Sound of the Desert from ep 7 to ep 35, the end. For the most part, once I accepted it, the 3 main characters are exceptional people with preternatural observational, analytical, strategical abilities. All are clever and quick-witted.
Two of them are also great fighters, more realistic fighting than in wuxia dramas.
It follows that when one of them is set up to be the noble idiot, he would be the granddaddy of all noble idiots!
The other cold, haughty male character with close familial ties to the emperor actually surprised me. Part his cold haughtiness is a deliberate facade- he is an awesome young general but he doesn't want any type of popularity that makes the emperor feel threatened. And, he simply doesn't care what people think how he lives his private life: cheeky, unorthodox, unconventional.
Skipped a lot of the resolution of the love triangle. Too repetitive, weepy, angsty and draggy. However, the resolution comes with plenty of episodes remaining. We get to see how the relationships evolve into a more understanding and comfortable one.

Also marathoned Song in the Clouds from ep 1 to ep 25. with 20 eps to go. This is supposed to be the "sequel" of Sound of the Desert. This TV adaption is not a sequel in the sense there are not continuing characters. The "smartest" characters here are no more than a shadow of the main ones in Sound of the Desert. I'm pretty much indifferent to all the characters.
Somewhere I read that the main female protagonist is the daughter of the main couple from Sound of the Desert. She is not. She doesn't have even one percent of the mental and physical ability.
To fulfill the pledge of love from her childhood 9 years ago, she snuck away from home (First clue that her parents are not the couple from Sound of the Desert).
Then, she mistook a man to be her love. Obviously, he is clueless about her. But, she is stuck with the mindset that she must suffer in silence until he come to recognize her/remember their past, while ignoring all the "clues" that he is the WRONG GUY!
The main male character is somewhat of an antihero. He met the girl when she was young during the same incidence leading up to the big "Pledge." He puts her (totally avoidable) broken heart back together. But, she is convinced by the main female antagonist to doubt his sincerity, again ignoring "clues" and misinterpreting observations. More avoidable broken hears and angst ensue.
I'm skipping a lot of the weepy angsty stuff along with uninteresting political intrigues.

The antihero actually knows the girl has the wrong guy. He doesn't tell her because he
1. loves her since 9 years ago and wants to win her over. (His offer of marriage (no meeting at this time) is what drives her to leave home.)
2. doesn't want to reveal his past?

Finished Song in the Clouds with a lot of skipping. In the penultimate episode, she-who-cannot-judge-correctly, or The Moron, for short, finally went home, somewhere in the desert. Thank goodness! At least for one episode, no one gets in trouble or gets killed due to her impulsive stupidity, AND I could stop banging my head.
The antihero is kind of interesting. But, the noble idiocy is strong in this one. Very strong.

Just got through almost all of the 1st episode of Remember. YSH's character may have photographic memory, but so far he doesn't seem to be good at problem solving. When someone is arrested and charged with a widely publicized murder, the person's nearest and dearest should find a lawyer immediately, not wait around thinking that the innocent will be set free. Of course, it is still in the flashback. Maybe the kid did try to find legal representation but didn't do so in time. That means the police would have to fake important records, including video recording.
For now, PMY's character feels very familiar.
There are a couple more things that bug me. I'm very reluctant to continue.

I just yelled at a the people who came to install the gutter downspouts. I was told that they would come next week. Then, suddenly they called to say they were coming. When they showed up, they took the liberty of opening the garage door to access the electric outlet. If I hadn't run outside, the feral cats could have escaped. There is an outside electric outlet.

The gutter on the back of the house was never hung with the correct pitch. It hasn't been an issue. The downspout installers decided that the gutter must be re-hung to drain correctly. The roofer was supposed to rehang it after installing the new roof. Seemed like the roofer did rehang the gutter. Whether that was done or not, a drainage problem still existed. So, I let the downspout people rehang the gutter. Stuff that had sealed were ripped up again. Not sure whether they will reseal.
This work is not in the contract, the roofer subcontracts out gutter-downspout work. No clue how much extra this will cost.
If it weren't for the feral cats, I could have pretended that I wasn't home. I doubt they would do any additional work.

I wonder whether El Nino is affecting the weather there. It has been an unseasonably mild autumn and winter here.

We had a nicebtimebin Fremantle. We took a half day tour and then opted to walk around. Visited the submarine exhibit at the Maritime Museum. Was very informative. Had fun getting around by train and free shuttle. Would have been perfect except my foot started to hurt.
Now early to bed and finally we can have a later wake up. It will be off to Rottnest tomorrow, which is the aim of this trip.
