@GB

edX commenting is based on markdown as opposed to markup language like HTML/XML. Markdown is much less powerful without the tags.

Sometimes the interpreter that renders markdown will also render a limited number of markup. I don't comment often in edX so I decided not to test and possibly creating gibberish.

Best to use the shortcut icons provided in the comment box.

OK, noted that. I'm not sure how much commenting I'll do. It has of course to be interesting and friendly.

I've been taking it easy today, with an itchy throat and a propensity to fall asleep. I will have to get some reading done while I can.

The good thing about having few good shows airing is that there seems to be more time to read. :)

I've had fun doing the Week 1 of the course. It was both not bad and quite challenging. I'll be interested to see if I get any responses in the Discussion.

As expected, one thing leads to another and on looking things up, it's going to take a lot more time than it appeared. However, I'll see if I can manage it. What I really want to do, of course, is Pride and Prejudice in November. That will be an even busier month. If I can weather it easily with A Study in October, I may be OK for November. So this is a try out as well as a 'real' course.

Finished Me Too, Flower

More than half of the main characters are "damaged" in various ways. It's messy, weepy, irrational, odd and irritating in places.

1. Yoon Shi Yoon's acting made me wonder whether he was trained on the stage. I read that stage acting needs to be more exaggerated than screen acting. Also, I think he had a spray tan. His skin color was various shades of yellow/orange/brown exacerbated by his auburn(?) hair color.

2. In a few scenes, the female lead reminded me of Ha Jin Won in Secret Garden. I got no such vibe from her in The Legend.

3. The psychiatrist was both professional/ethical and unprofessional/unethical. professional/ethical: He absolutely refused to discuss his patient's issues. No accidentally blurting out stuff either. A doctor revealing confidential information with the patient's consent should be severely disciplined. unprofessional/unethical: He halfheartedly hit on his patient. This happened only a few times and nothing came out of it. I absolutely reject any drama premised on doctor-patient or teach-student romantic entanglements.

@ Snickers?

OK, thanks for the info. Then I will not watch it.

Are you going in to drama watching by the actor or actress you might like to watch in another show?

Anyone else come to mind?

I seem to choose shows as blindly as possible, and more based on the story outline. Then I watch to see if I regret it. :)

I might sort of like to choose a show, say, for Seo In Guk, who is up and coming and can be interesting in the various roles he's played. But if the next story he is in does not sound like something I'd like, I might still give it a miss.

No one again. I simply don't watch enough dramas to like enough actors/actresses for me to constantly follow around.

Have you visited Healer ep 20 recap in the last few days? Nothing major and still pretty quiet. But I posted a new JCW drama news, and probably helped another person to become a fan of Twenty Again, a drama that I don't even watch ?

When I did drop by more than a couple of days ago, it was so quiet and I had nothing to add to it, therefore I left quietly as well. I've also been distracted by the course and all the interesting stuff there is to read.

That's funny... help someone become a fan of Twenty Again? It's good enough to recommend quite safely.

I just went to Healer 20 to see what's been happening. I'll leave my question for you over there.

4. People acting like they lack basic common sense when they should have known better as a set up to whatever insults the viewers' intelligence ??? When it is -10°C outside, you are cold and you are wearing a long scarf, cover up your head! Anyone who lives through real winter every year should know about 30% of the body heat escapes from the head. And, exposed skin under such condition would suffer frost bites before the person becomes hypothermic.

Can I assume that your mild rant here is to do with Me Too Flower?

I who am in the humid tropics, have been seen out and about in winter jacket and wool scarf. I even covered my head in doors in the air conditioning. This finally induced a considered look and a question... "Are you cold?" I guess, my dress up was still rather subtle? LOL

Not that particular sentence but other kdramas such as 49 Days.

Also, I was going to rant about Me Too Flower female stereotypes in the workplace, but decided it is a pointless waste of time and energy.

I've had a nice, restful Sunday and am trying to get over the cold. I feel basically ok, but I keep wanting to nap, and this is without taking any medication before the sleepiness took over.

I've done a quick read/listen with audio book of the rest of the A Study in Scarlet and now can finally recall it. I wonder if this book did a big disservice to a certain community of people. I should look it up.

I am not bothered too much about past societies' prejudices. Every group, even those in the majority, have suffered various forms of mild to extreme mistreatment, both in reality and in fiction. Things generally improve. As long as continuous improvement is being achieved and people don't hold onto false "good ol' days" mindset, it's good enough.

I don't like using version control. However, I've decided to use it more often so I can come to tolerate it. I was googling short tutorials and found a short youtube video. Usually after a video, youtube automatically loads another related video. After this video, I noticed youtube started loading a video with Shin Min Na's picture! I stopped it. A mosaic of videos had just this irrelevant kdrama/kpop video among relevant videos ? No clue how that came about.

Just in case one thinks that my browser history/cache/cookies might have something to do with this. This browser is set to clear all data upon closing. I didn't watch any kdrama/kpop related youtube videos previously. I also didn't sign in youtube. DB was open in another at the time. Was there some kind of browser security breach that allows sites to access browser data set by other sites?

Required fields are marked *

I've had that happen to me every time if in YouTube I don't bother to stop a video when it finishes. I always took it that all the videos lined up on the right frame were somehow there because of date or some ad hoc listing order and that one video just followed on another endlessly.

If they are filed or listed according to some indexed terms, then if people put in rubbish tags like those # tags that have no relevance to the subject, they just get included in the list of videos that use those tags. I have not examined the videos/tags/details or cared to, therefore this is just my lay person's guess.

This topic reminded me that just last week I listened to a radio DJ having a segment on the deception of hashtags. He listed hash tags on air and asked what we thought the tweet or comment would be about and showed that so much content is misrepresented. I think he does that once a week (to complain LOL!) as part of his show.

Something else I notice, although I do not sign in to YouTube... when I come into it, they have a first page showing me a whole bunch of stuff I might be interested in. Which means they may keep a history of things I've searched for before somewhere and are auto-populating a recommendation page... "you might also be interested in..."

I don't know if this has to do with not clearing cache or browsing history, but it was quite specific to stuff I did look up before on YouTube.

Required fields are marked *

It is related to the stuff that is in your browser's cache. That's why I do most of online stuff with my Firefox browser because every "footprint" is erased when I close it. Thus, I make any tracking by a website temporary. It's inconvenient to log in to websites or start at a fresh bookmarked page every time. But, much better privacy.

I use Firefox for DB and am using Chrome more for Gmail and all the G apps. I did not realise at first that some features I get in Chrome for the Google stuff, I cannot get in Firefox.

@GB

JB believed that Me Too, Flower was the most underrated drama off 2011. She liked it.

http://www.dramabeans.com/2011/12/2011-editors-picks-year-in-review-part-5/

Now, what will you do? Do you think your taste is closer to mine or JB's?

This is why I don't recommend something based on whether I think it's good. I try to suggest based on an observed pattern: 1. a good number of Healer fans seem to like IRY; 2. a good number of Healer & IRY fans seem to like Twenty Again; 3. thus, if you belong to 2., you may want to give Twenty Again a try.

Obviously, if I don't notice a pattern, I won't suggest anything. Consequently, I don't do it often.

@ Snickers?

I can tell you what I will generally try...

Mystery/Crime, Rom-com, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Action - Therefore Village piques my interest.
D-Day to a lesser extent
Merchant - in order to see a bit a sageuk that is not mostly in the king's court. But again, I'm not too invested in it to begin with.

I am watching and liking Twenty Again more than She Was Pretty. They will fall into the Rom-com genre.

I only noticed Jung Il Woo in 49 Days and I liked him as the Scarecrow and his song. He did not make an impression on me in the little i saw of "The Moon that Embraces the Sun" or in (whole series that I watched of) "Take Care of the Young Lady". I did not care for the cut of him from the "Flower Boy Ramyun Shop"... it was the kiss scene. It was a difficult thing with many takes and some blood was let. So I shall let you form your own impressions and review the show.

The Moon that Embraces the Sun was my first kdrama. The local Korean TV station had many broadcast technical difficulties. I couldn't finish the drama. If it weren't for the desire to know that happened to Jung Il Woo's Prince Yang Myung, I would not have pursued it. I googled character names and plot points, then ended up 1. finding DB ??? and 2. streaming a TV show for the first time. I upgraded my broadband speed soon after.

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop is the 4th JIW drama I've watched. This makes about 25 completed kdramas. I must say that I still prefer sageuk.

Required fields are marked *

You actually kept track of having watched 25 kdramas? I never counted and I've deleted some or never downloaded some... so I have no accurate figure of dramas I've watched.

I started off with Goong in 2007 or 2008??? But I did not launch into watching lots of shows until much later like 2012 onwards I think. Still, my rate of watching was low. Now I watch 2-5 different shows a week (if I can fit them in) and I consider that quite a lot.

At a guess, I may have watched some 50 shows with a few movies. Nothing near the addiction levels of some others, I gather.

0

Marathoned Flower Boy Ramyun Shop in one sitting. My poor neck! Poor stiff neck.

1. Again, the female lead was a mess in her workplace. Unlike JB or GF stated in the recap, I got pretty fed up watching her behavior as a student/assistant teacher. Got much better for me after she finally recovered her "backbone" and quit in ep. 4. Just about the time I wanted to drop the drama.

2. Plot probably could be tightened in places and trimmed a little.

3. I laughed a lot. Often chuckling while shaking my head at the crazy/unbelievable/exaggerated/unexpected stuff. Little bits of BOF and Secret Garden spoof. A good number of screwball comedy-type situations. Juvenile humor here and there. A narcoleptic 2nd(?) male lead.

4. The way Jung Il Woo just completely threw himself into his character was nice to watch.

5. Characters are "damaged" but they were not portrayed melodramatically. Definitely much easy to take then Me Too, Flower.

6. Jung Il Woo's flower boy character just felt and behaved exactly like he had no prior experience. Clueless and honest. Thus, he was not as hurtful to the woman he was infatuated with as Hyun Bin's character in Secret Garden. The 2nd male lead's character was similar to Phillip Lee's in Secret Garden but more proactive and less broody.

7. I don't remember any obvious flowers-and-candles type of romantic scenes. None of the few dates turned out well so to speak. As for the so-called "feels," I defer to ep 10 to 12 recaps and reactions because I don't feel these things as intensely(?) as normal people.

Friendly advice: Next time you marathon, force yourself to get up every half hour and walk around. Better for back and neck!!! If I get one of them stiff necks they last for days. It's a nice premise but unless more is added it does not sound like a serial drama, more like a feel good movie, ... one of those corporate heroes getting colleagues out of their meaningless lives to do something worthwhile and not only draw attention to a well known problem but get something done about it.

Or OK... drama where there's also the whole issue of getting themselves smoked out and sick, the long-term health fallout and affected corporations out to sabotage their plans. Can we avoid throwing in a romance?

0

:-) What an impassioned response to my joke! I also think it's a stupid idea.

0

My thought is that it's just some bullcrap that the company's PR dept put out.

I suppose if the company manufactures firefighting equipment or have ways to more accurately model the spread for the fires...

I read recently that the models used in U.S. to "predict" how wildfires spread have been particularly inaccurate this year.

Imaginary Cat: both the human and the cat have issues that living together help them work through. I'm sure the cat's issues are not all that serious.

My senior cats have ISSUES! The male is OCD and misbehaves (improper urination). The female is getting senile. She often just pees wherever and walks into things because she forgets/is confused?

0

Yes, 'Love Cells'... some ridiculous thing that enables a person to fall in love. The guy protagonist had his cells all dried up or something and the cat, Navi, is the epitome of Love Cells and helped him chase a girl, combat his loneliness and get a life.

0

Oh, that sounds plausible!

I actually do have edible plants in my garden. Only my mum-in-law can tell with any certainty which is for what illness and which will produce what vege/fruit... there are some other stuff I can tell are things like chilli.

I'm at work today as in ... in the office. But until something else crops up, I'm also relatively free. :)

0

:-) I'm pretty sure they looked at what the animals were eating to decide...

0

@GB Lucky you! :-)

0

I'm thinking of looking at a packet of seasoned seaweed to decide if Ill eat some... it's crunchy and tasty all on it's own.

0

I'm too lazy to plant/weed/de-bug veggies/fruiting veggies. We do have more than a decade old chili pepper plants in pots.

We had way way too much rain in spring and first half of summer. The potatoes my mom planted pretty much all melted. The weedy wildflowers grew 50% taller than they normally do. Not only was every plant in the jungle scraping me, all sort of stuff was also falling on me.

0

I have a giant pokeweed in the backyard. This year's rain made it a giant. The fruit is poisonous to humans and livestock but I do see some birds eating it.

0

@ Snickers?

Your yard is starting to sound dangerous. I hope you are suitably dressed (all covered up) and covered in insect repellent before you embark on gardening!

It's true that to really keep a garden as a garden, one needs to have interest. I am fortunate that my in-laws are happy with nature and take on weeding and plant care as healthy exercise. Without them, my jungle will compete quite nicely with yours!

0

Danger comes with letting part of the backyard go wild.

Milkweed, food of the monarch butterfly caterpillars, is toxic to mammals and birds. When the "milk" gets in a person's eye, it will cause blindness unless the person is quickly treated in an emergency room. After treatment, the excruciating pain lasts about 2 weeks. I have approx. 200 milkweeds.

Poisoning by ingestion is not a concern. Much more concerned about contact-induced "sufferings." Stingy nettle was no joke, but I found out how to quickly relieve the pain. As long as I don't have poison ivy/oak/sumac, it's not bad.

Insect repellent doesn't work on bees, wasps, spiders, biting flies...

0

I love laver! So... good...

0

Note to self - remove milkweed!

0

Everything has inherent risk and danger.

I've been dealing with milkweeds for a couple decades. Didn't know they were milkweeds until 2009. Before then, every year my mom was cutting them down like crazy. Didn't know about the eye thing until 2011.

The latex in the sap makes it stick to leaves/stalks/fingers/hands/clothes and not squirt like cutting into a juicy fruit. There is no warning attached to any milkweed sold anywhere. Getting sap in the eye must be a very rare occurrence.

Milkweed sap hasn't even come close to any of the things that could have seriously injured my eye/eyes - rose stems, random branches, cat claw, sulfuric acid (which slightly burnt my eyelid and warped my contact lens), contact lenses themselves, and so on.

I just remind myself not to rub my eyes when my fingers may have any plant sap or caustic substance.

0

Before I started wearing contact lenses. A wasp managed to sting my eyelid even though I was wearing glasses. No clue what would've happened if it got my eyeball. Removing the stinger by myself was a literal and figurative pain. I had to take off my glasses but I couldn't see much without them. Both ironic and funny.

0

That's the kind of funny where you laugh bc you want to avoid crying!

@ Snickers? Feel free to see if you agree with any of these.

Yeah, those questions on chemistry of couples in shows... as usual I started by asking why it was that I saw little or nothing and others were flailing excited at the chemistry they could see. My first thoughts will generally run ... I'm missing something here.... or is it a matter of interpretation .... is there a right / wrong answer as in there is or there isn't chemistry or no such thing as only one answer??? Hence my questions on whether it is subjective and what people say chemistry is to them. I should also look it up online to see if there's much written about it.

My conclusions at the moment....
*Chemistry is undefinable or hard to fully define... it is based on how right we feel a couple are for each other, how we interpret what they 'feel' for each other, whether they look compatible, whether even after a show is over we want them to be together even in RL and every combination of these aspects.

* Show producers put in effort to give viewers characters that will have chemistry... they can tell if there is or isn't chemistry regardless of who the actors are, usually during the casting process. They also can and do ensure the right mood music, lighting, camera angles etc etc to augment the chemistry for viewing.

* Actors are supposed to work at creating chemistry. Whether they have it or not with their fellow actors, their job is to do their best to convince viewers that they have it for that other actor.

* Viewers will be viewers. They can interpret chemistry any way they like. For them it can be a mixture of subjective 'feels' and the recognition of the technical aspects that went into making the chemistry happen or it can just be purely subjective. Hence the remarkable occurrences of people saying there was so much chemistry among couples where I see none.

* There is also the element of whether a show has generated positive vibes of viewers for the characters. It is possible that what viewers think is chemistry between characters, may in fact be more that they feel positive towards those characters, than that the characters are full of chemistry with each other. IE we just like those characters (and see them as people) and we want them to be 'happy' and not lonely. We might then impute a lot more to any interactions of characters based on how we feel about them.

I'm not sure if there's more to add to this summary of conclusions but I'll see what emerges if and when I think some more or sleep over it. :)

My two cents: chemistry is pretty d*mn obvious in the casting process. That said, things can happen to the actors' interaction during the course of shooting that will alter any natural chemistry. Hence, they need to be pretty good at acted chemistry.

For example. Have either of you seen Notting Hill? Rumor has it that Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant HATED each other during the shoot. And yet, didn't you feel that they had a really good spark - super mutual rapport as characters? That's why they were both A-listers at that time. Talent and professionalism. Despite mutual dislike, they delivered to the production and the audience.

From what I read about kdrama casting, often a lead role is simply offered without an audition. Doesn't that mean trusting the actor/actress to do what is required regardless?

0
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

That happens when an actor is well known and has a body of work. But that will only happen for the top level people. Everyone else will have to audition.

0

Then that accounts for why the OTP may have the chemistry of skunks.

0

They usually cast one of the main actors and then have them meet with other people being considered opposite them to see if they interact well. Maybe a lunch.

0

1. Skunks can be very cute.

2. I've told plenty of wildlife to knock off their "amorous" activity in front of me, including skunks. They are "all natural" and have less issue with "chemistry" than people.

0

:-) IDK, some of those animal documentaries show them going to ridiculous levels to attract a mate!

0

With animals, it usually takes much less time even when the female has competing suitors.

0

I just did a bit of cleaning but the amount of dust accumulation belied the little that was cleaned out. And the place does not look neater... no, it looks more messy. Hence my reluctance to start any clearing out process. If I can't throw stuff out, then it does not help just shifting them and the dust around. *sigh*

Lower dust level is about the only plus point. Now I got to figure out where to put the stuff I moved from the space under the table. I don't want them to go back there but I can't think where to put them. This is the story of the store-place I call home. Before long family members will have to pick their way among piles of stuff to move from point A to point B.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I have the same problem. Everyone left a lot of their stuff in the house when they moved out. Sometimes they moved stuff back as if this is a storage place.

I do have an unofficial time limit for piles. If the pile has not been touched for x number of years, it is not needed and I can get rid of it. Of course, getting rid of stuff responsibly, like recycle/donate ♻, is also time-consuming.

0

Required fields are marked *

I just did a bit of moving books in and out of a cupboard. I still have to ask "permission" to give away stuff. Kids can be sensitive about stuff they have some attachment too, not to mention the adults. If I can really "get rid' of that small pile, I will have space to put in other bits of piles floating around. Then I can maybe make some table space or give the illusion that some things are sort of organised. (But the danger is that I'll never find them again!!!)

0

I was told by an architect or designer or just plain friend (can't recall who) to make the house more living space instead of a storage area. He or she said to make it 80-90% living space. I don't know, I think we sort of live in like 20% of the space anyway. The rest is slowly being given over to storage until I get into the mood to move stuff around. There's also lots of just space, but I'm told that a house is supposed to have that kind of just space. Anyway, there's barely a table or chair that is infrequently used, that is not hidden under stuff.

0

I issued several ultimatums (selling them on eBay, donating them to charity...) to my sister about her still-in-original-pacakging Barbie collection ⚠⚠⚠ Last year, I finally convinced my mom to stuff all of them in large trash bags then shoved them in my sister's car trunk when she popped by ?

Now, I have an easier time climbing into the attic.

Yoo Seung Ho's cat drama is only 8 episodes. I like it. If it sucks, it's short. If it is good, at least it won't get too draggy.

He is considering the legal thriller Remember. That genre is not my kind of tea. ? to ?

Yes, I may watch it not because of him but because it's short and I try stuff. Does not mean I'll watch the whole lot just because it is short, but it's more likely I will.

As for Remember, maybe because is has thriller in it, I may try. I am curious about having too much memory and losing it.

After watching the 3rd episode of Dazzling Temptation, I'm still not sure if I'll continue, but it was not too bad. The melo part is kicking in though... I tread warily with melo. Too much and I decamp... requires the investment of too much emotional capital. Of course that's the reason why many people who like melo, do like melo. At the end of it all there's supposed to be emotional pay-off for all the weeks of investment. But I am not sure I want to be upset for virtual people for weeks on end. I like the kids in the backstory. That's keeping me on for the time being.

What's been happening? With just 1 show that did not air, the whole pace of drama watching seems to have been upset! I guess it's time to scare myself with some Cheo Yong 2, however the subbing was really not good for the latest episode. It looks like the experienced subbers have either left or are overworked.

The subs for Village: the Legend of Achiara are even worse. They look as if they were Google translated with minimal or no editing to help us make sense of the phrases. Fortunately it is recapped here and the story was clear enough to figure out and a minute familiarity with Korean helped too.

Its fight scenes can be quite good as long as there is no wire work. The wire work looks obvious and cheesy. When I was younger I had no problem with it. Must be my evolving taste or something. I now prefer the type of sword fights done by the bad guys in WDBS.

My experience is mainly as a viewer. I don't really have great insight to this matter.

1. Seggers and subbers are different. A segger's job is to "cut" speeches into appropriate lengths- starting right when a person speaks, making sure the segment length is not too short/long... Certain monosyllabic words are not segged. Sometimes lyrics are segged and sometimes not. A seggers don't need to know the language. They just need to have very good timing and apply the rules well.

2. viki's "official" subbers must first pass segging training. No clue what is exactly involved in the subbing training. Obviously a subber should know how to seg just in case a segger who doesn't know the language cut a long sentence in the wrong place.

3. If you are bilingual/multilingual, take a look at a spoken language you know that is subbed in another language you know and see how well or not subtleties are translated. People who are trained as interpreters would do a much better job than your average bilingual/multilingual people.

⌀⌀Example: There is a two-word phrase in Korean that starts with the word "dog." It's often translated into English as "nonsense." But for some reason I think it is closer to English 🐂💩 in spirit.

4. I've watched same dramas several times on viki and dramafever. Occasionally, the same spoken sentence are subbed to convey different meanings.
⌀⌀Example: Healer ep. 6. CYS told PBS over the phone that she feels that they are like sisters. JB and viki both used "sisters" while DF used "siblings."

5. I'm watching Return of Iljimae on DF. Apparently, the sub is official MBC sub. I can tell more are said than subbed. There is an unintentionally hilarious subtitle in ep. 12??????????
Looks like the official MBC subbers didn't know how to translate what was said ? Based on this and

⌀⌀• kdramas generally are not made with international audience as the main focus
⌀⌀• live shoots

I don't think writers collaborate with translators/interpreters.

I have not yet come across an all male cosmetics store though, and I see very few men actually browsing the shelves where the "For Men" items are. I believe a whole bunch of mums help to get their stuff! LOL.

0

Can I weigh in on the who skin care thing?

The first thing you should do is seek an esthetician. Not a dermatologist. You want someone who does extractions, microdermabrasion and IPL. If your child starts good skin care now, it will last a long time.

Do not use moisturizer. It's damaging to the skin. Use emu oil. Also copper peptides. Take vitamin C and MSM. These are the building blocks your skin cells need for repair.

Wear sunscreen with titanium dioxide in it. A good BB cream is also nice (can be made thinner with emu oil). I would recommend Dr. Jarts (Korean / German brand). There are several fake BB creams on the market - this is a reputable brand.

Exercise. This helps skin amazingly.

Rough skin is likely due to lifestyle and diet. Go see a Chinese doctor about balancing diet to improve this.

:-) Thus endeth my semi-professional screed on skin care.

Sickly sweet or monumentally stupid or completely self-absorbed.

Sometimes the guy is a jerk. Of course, dramas are written mainly for the female audience some of whom harbor that weird romantic notion of changing cold aloof jerk. (Playful Kiss) I think this was discussed a few times in Healer threads too.

Sometimes the guy actually must do things (perhaps for the greater good) while sacrificing his own personal life (occasionally life as in the life and death way). (Return of Iljimae)

In either case, the woman often loses her ability to behave rationally or reason based on evidence. Makes me want to smack her.

I felt like smacking the heroine last night in She Was Pretty (which I know you are not watching). She was a perfectly competent individual, calm and effective, caring and thoughtful,.... but a little bit of guilt or embarrassment and she turns into the worst of dithering idiots around the guy (who was a louse to her in the beginning), so much so she cannot even speak properly or open the door for herself. I roll my eyes. All I can say is, at least it wasn't because she was 'in love' with him that she suddenly behaved that way, but because she felt embarrassed or guilty. And the next moment, we see that she's fine again. The extremes are jarring.

Something nefarious is afoot at viki. A few dramas in my queue have become unavailable in my region. I wonder whether

1. There is some kind of collusion among the paid streaming sites to divide content and compel consumers to subscribe to more sites.

or

2. Larger corporations like Netflix/Apple/Amazon are signing exclusive licensing deals to make content unavailable to their competitors.

That is so irritating. The choices we have just dry up.

I don't have Viki or DF, so I just go around and try sites that others mention. They're mainly free but one can get lots of ads and it may take many clicks to get to the show. The best so far is Dramacool. No ads and we can get pretty HD. Others like Dramafire gives the shows without ads but also without the HD. Some let us download but without the subs.

Streaming from Dramacool is technically not legal in the U.S. due to the lack of licensing. I'm staying away from it out of principle.

The list made me laugh. Some of the shows that are questionably popular may have been the ones that are advocated each time we open DF or a site. They sound familiar that way. Maybe they have been pushed into our faces so often that we click to watch them.

The introduction says 'most viewed' but we do not know if the viewers watched just 1 episode or all. Also, many people click to watch out of curiosity and it has nothing to do with whether they like it or not, therefore it it does not show how popular the show really is.

At least Healer is on this list. LOL!

Don't know how the stats are compiled.

A guess:
1. BOF has existed several years before Heirs. BOF is almost a perpetual member on the weekly top 10 most watched list.
2. Blood was aired on time by DF but was on a 2-week lag at viki.
3. Vice versa for KMHM.
4. Healer aired on time by both DF and viki.
Perhaps not by how many times viewed but by how many distinct viewers?

Did you notice Blood is ahead of Healer by one?

If the list is on popular titles, Blood should not even be on it!!! Neither should My Lovable Girl. Because these end up included, that the list represents popularity seems insane and invalid. If it is just based on the number of people clicking for whatever reason, on the title in DF, then it tells us nothing much.

0

Blood was the most watched on DF throughout its run, probably grabbing some of viki members due to the 2-week lag at viki. Based on the comments at DF, I think was reasonably popular in North America.

I also don't think just clicking is enough to be counted. DF changed its policy so a non-paying member could only watch a drama up to episode 6, then the time lag kicked in. As a member, DF "remembers" where I left off in each episode of every drama I watched. This memory lasts several months.

0

A completely pointless list. It skews modern because they have a larger viewer base now. It needs to be normalized to make any sense.

The next set of homework is time-consuming. I have to find a detective similar to Sherlock Holmes in the literary world. There are sooooo many detectives to read up about. It would also be good although not mandatory to locate videos starring the detective of choice. As usual I fell asleep looking this up. Not boring, but the brain is not committed to this effort.

https://www.quora.com/Is-there-any-other-fictional-character-like-Sherlock-Holmes

I've never read Sherlock Holmes stories myself. I read short discussions and references, and watched a few TV miniseries.

For some reason, Agatha Christie's Poirot comes to mind even though I really know nothing except he is Polish.

TV's Detective Columbo feels similar too.

0

@ Snickers?

Thanks! Cheating or not, I need all the help I can get. Going down the long list of literary detectives in Wikipedia and looking them up sufficiently to know them will just about kill me.

Poirot, I believe, was Belgian and he is also on my list but for the life of me, I can only think how he is different from Holmes and not how he is similar. This assignment is tougher than expected!!!

0

An author would be accused of plagiarism is his/her detective character has too many similarities with Sherlock Holmes. So, variations on a theme, I guess.

0

Woah! The link you gave me got me the short cut to find out that there is a literary character, Solar Pons, who is the pastiche of Sherlock Holmes. That cut down research time by hours!!! A million thanks.

Pons, too, is considered a variation on the theme of Holmes and seems popular, although I have been in some deep dried up well (the Malay saying is 'like a frog in a well') and know him not.

http://www.SolarPons.com

http://www.thrillingdetective.com/more_eyes/solar_pons.html

0

Solar Pons is an odd name, not quite porn star, maybe campy sci-fi?

0

Pons is the creation of August Derleth and was interestingly and correctly, not made to be campy or a parody, but to be taken seriously as a detective in his own right. He has his own timeline and his cases sometimes intersect with those of other fictional characters like Fu Manchu and Holmes himself. Looks like I have lots or reading to do, since I like the mystery genre. I believe that there are over 70 titles of Ponsite mysteries, way more than the 56 + 4 of Holmesian stories.

0

Just remembered that I came to know of Sherlock Holmes in a circuitous way: reading a few Arsène Lupin stories when I was a preteen. Weird, right?

This guy's wikipedia entry lists his pastiches.

I was raining cats and dogs last night and even this afternoon. Usually we collect the water to wash the floor with. But with the PSI still at 170-230, the collected water is not clear but brackish.

Haze has been coming and going a lot. We never know what the next 3 hours will bring.

I feel like that post could be a poem... or a poetic piece of prose:

The heavens released a catadupe over Singapore last night.

My maid and I ran around the garden in the morning, scattering buckets to collect the deluge. It continued unabated through the afternoon.

When the sun finally chased the nuage away, eager to wash the floors, we scampered to find our buckets full of clean water only to discover it was brackish. The smoky haze that has mercurially descended upon the city these many past months turning it into a Monet-esque vision had collected in my garden water buckets. We sighed. We would have to wait for a 'cats and dogs' deluge under a fresh sky before collecting our water to clean the floors.

You're certainly waxing poetical. Did poetic composition give you a refreshing break from work? :)

Well it stopped raining in the early morning but the PSI was still shockingly high. It rained again in the afternoon, but not as heavily and got the car yuckky. And it is my hard-working father-in-law (FIL) who is mightily committed to laying out many pails each time it rains. The angle of roof does channel water down in a deluge at a certain point. It might be both FIL and maid who do the floor cleaning, while I wonder if we really need that many pails of water, since I see FIL pouring them out after 2 days, so as not to breed mosquitoes. This time all the pails were pretty full, and there were more than 10 of them!!!

We collect water runoff from the awning attached to the house and the garage roof. I have rain barrels, regular barrels, and larger containers to store the water. About 400 gallon total capacity. We only use the rainwater for non-food plants in yard. Collected rainwater was enough for the yard in some summers.

As long as I secure a lid or a mesh/screen over the container, mosquito breeding is not an issue. Either they can't access the water, or with the lid on for a couple of weeks, all the mosquitoes die from being stuck in the container ??? A few people consider me diabolically evil ???

Rainwater around large metro area is always contaminated. In spring, there is a visible top layer of yellow pollen. Water might be the cleanest after several downpours in relative short period of time, but I might not have time to dump out the containers to re-collect the water in the meantime.

0

Required fields are marked *

@ Snickers?

Yeah, it's the dumping out part that is a pain when the containers are huge. We also use up the water to water plants and lawn but I see hardworking FIL scooping gallons into smaller pails on a trolley to wheel them back to other places he wants to wash. He uses a hose to get the water transferred out more quickly sometimes, but that works only from a taller container to a shorter one.

I would imagine the effort in preventing the increase in disease bearing pests is to be applauded rather than to be condemned to the far reaches of hell. I have no compunction killing houseflies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and ants even (harmless though they may seem). The maid next door will I think deplore me of course (she's a Buddhist from Myanmar) as she will probably kill nothing.

In the U.S., "diabolically evil" can be a compliment.

If ants swarm near or try to come into the house, they are dead! Same goes for mosquitoes.

There are many types of flies and some are pollinators.
I don't bother them unless they come in. Interestingly, pollinator flies never come in.

Generally, I let spiders defend the house.

The houseflies think they own the food, therefore they die.

Anything that does not bite or sting and remains outside, also generally remain unharmed.

Our house has umpteen spiders and lizards (to keep the spider population under control) running wild and free. I wish Singapore could actually have pet hedgehogs or any creature that ate ants as a matter of course. They would keep the grounds clear. ;)

0

This is the 8th or 9th year since part of the backyard went wild. Seems like a natural balance has been achieved.

Ants and aggressive wasps used to dominate. I couldn't mow the lawn without being trailed/tasted by yellow jackets.

Starting about 3 years ago, when I'm in the jungle amongst bees, wasps, flies, dragonflies..., they just move out of my way. (I don't put on insect repellent during butterfly season lest accidentally poisoning caterpillars.) There are also far fewer bloodsuckers than there are outside the jungle.

0

Bloodsuckers literally or figuratively? :)

0

Figurative bloodsuckers inside the jungle??

Given the jungle is not an independent sovereignty, whatever figurative bloodsuckers outside of it are also inside.

0

@ Snickers?

My question pertained to whether you meant figurative bloodsuckers outside the jungle... which would mean you mean people :D ... leeches (???? "no, don't look at me!") of the two-legged kind and blood of other colour besides red.

0

? has legs. Leeches don't.

Literal bloodsuckers:
I rarely get bitten in the jungle by mosquitoes and cohorts. Outside the jungle, sometimes it feels like they are trying to suck me try. No leeches.

Figurative bloodsuckers:
They just send payment notices. As long as you pay, they don't show up physically.

0

I think we have more taxing authorities than species of human blood sucking arthropods in my yard.

"My first 5 kdramas: The Moon Embracing the Sun, 49 Days, City Hunter, Arang and the Magistrate, Warrior Baek Dong Soo"

Of your list, I've watched parts of Moon, all of 49 Days ...and I agree that the sister thing was weird and out-of-place but I am happy that the heroine died according to plan ie it was the most logical conclusion. I watched City Hunter but no longer remember much of it. I liked Arang which was my only true saeguk, watched in full (the other being a half sageuk, Rooftop Prince). I have not watched WBDS and now am curious about its WTH ending.

My first show was Goong which I watched like 10 times (parts of it at least) and I think I was stuck on old shows for a long time but watched slowly and sparingly for years, before I got onto the recent shows bandwagon, and started on DB with reading recaps. I really cannot recall when I started on DB or which truly recent show started me on commenting. I only recall that I was irate enough at My Secret Hotel to have commented on it here and elsewhere.

1. driving in SK is very dangerous
2. after a car accident, you will very likely suffer from amnesia

Since then, I've been much more active in avoiding dramas with unethical/blabbing doctors and amnesia story line.

Various combinations of picture-sound-subs out of sync was one of the reasons I couldn't continue watching The Moon Embracing the Sun on my local Korean TV station.

In addition, the broadcast also suffered from random signal loss and skipping.

When I first started streaming dramas, there were instances of out-of-sync picture-sound-subs. Streaming quality has vastly improved, although badly timed segmenting is still prevalent.

Well, this time it was the sound and subs that were in sync but the show was moving about 3-4 seconds slower than the sound and subs! I kept guessing whose voice I was hearing before seeing who would speak. Anyway I've given up (it was Cheo Yong 2) for now. Earlier when I tried either the subs were non-existent or were soooo bad, there was no point in trying to decipher meanings and catch action at the same time. It looks like I have to look around some more or wait.
