To start a new page.

Apple is adding to its emoji collections: taco, unicorn... Only Apple doing it will have little effect. However, I believe many platforms will soon follow suit. Perhaps the Vulcan salute will be supported on DB in the near future ?

We're having fun on the Yong Pal Ep 11 thread, but it's a lot of work!!! LOL.

I've decided that the nice people who've done my survey on the OT deserve an acknowledgement from me. So I'm busy there as well. Fortunately it's a holiday Saturday and I have a bit more time. :)

There's also 20 Again and its recap added to the mix to split my attention 5 ways!!! :D

:-) LOL!

I really did open a can of worms. I'm answering questions and organizing a thread on YP, developing website content for another project, doing market analysis for a third, and fielding endless phone calls for a bunch of crises.....

One thing I noted - all the people that blew up an me on both comment sections, YP and SWWTN are now chatting with me like nothing happened. Interesting, no?

To tell you the truth Susan, I never saw their 'blow up' as a personal thing. Even when they do it to me, I know it's not something they hold against me just that they are very earnest in stating their case. Therefore I do not find it strange that they chat and are friendly now and become 'difficult' again later, etc.

I actually don't have the energy to think and reply to the game replies... especially since much of it again are conjectures. If I can be creative, I may come up with a plot filler.

I'm guessing you don't have the time to moved the thread and tell us where it has gone. I'll look out for your "Notice of Removal". Kinda sleepy now... will just try to complete replying on OT #412. :)

The game thread is still going strong. I've posted Episode 1 and 2 as part of the initial comment. Lots of people are replying. I imagine it will go on all week.

Another thing - the reason I wanted to play plot holes with you was to teach people how to analyze. I've noticed that a lot of the logic is speculative and sloppy. I thought if we showed how to do it, then people would learn to be better at it and the conversations on comment threads would improve.

What do you think?

I'm of the opinion that our Superfans are not yet of the right 'mind' to notice that they can be educated.

I feel that you can maybe do this for a couple of plot holes but they will still return a speculative rejoinder. That's where they are at in analyses of plot holes LOL! I mean, it took me some time too to figure out what a plot hole was and that it was not OK and that what I was doing was filling it in with whatever I liked... It is not something that people without the background can pick up always. Some do and some don't... I kind of noticed that from my survey on the OT. I really like that this time I have 26 replies and several say it was fun to play.

But back to the plot hole game... if you have the time to continue it... just show a couple of examples. Ask them to do the same without conjecture ie how they will fill the hole themselves with action/exposition whatever. See if at least 1 person gets it. I think there will be one or two who might, at least temporarily LOL!

Instead of yet another ambiguous obligatory happy ending, a dance off between King, Scholar and Gwi. Changmin, an idol, must dance well. LJK apparently can dance pretty well too. Lee Soo Hyuk, a model, probably can't. Thus, Gwi loses. The winners celebrate. The End!

Reposting from the Healer thread

The Legend (of the Four Gods) and Healer were written by the same writer.

There were some similarities between the actors and the characters they played.

The actress who played hacker Adjumma (Healer) was the lady who played the blacksmith (Legend). The blacksmith improved upon weapons and armories without which the King couldn’t have been successful.

The actress who played Teacher (Healer) was also a teacher (Legend). He was also a bit goofy and a little incompetent as the teacher of an orphan.

The actor who played Kim Moon Shik (Healer) was the prime minister (Legend). Scheming and underhanded man who believed the “wrong side” was the best for the nation.

Lastly, I just watched The Legend ep 1 on DramaFire. End credit shows JavaBeans as the main subber/QC ?

I enjoyed the mythology and strong, powerful female characters of The Legend.

It's also very modern. Other than everyone swearing loyalty and willingly subjugating themselves to the King, there is no "You are girl so you can't..." attitude.

@ Snickers?
Soo interesting.... writers (like all artists) have something in their minds and hearts that they are trying to express and they do so multiple times in different stories and characters but they are essentially saying about the the same thing, or over time they may go deeper and add more insight, but essentially they could be re-phrasing, experimenting, re-layering, re-angling and re-presenting their main message/concept(s).

I notice this in the music of some song-writers/composers. There is a similar theme or series of phrases in some of their music. And I'm sure if I really bother I'd see it in art and choreography.

I was saying on the OT that I'm thinking of including looking out for writers as well as story in order to choose a show to watch. I usually don't bother about 'who' in the entertainment news. I just go for 'what story' is being offered. I don't like to complicate my entertainment life LOL!

I've have read enough of their posts in Ep 12 of YP and feel that our "friends" are not able to play the game.

The following is what I gather they are saying again:
1)I love the show, I can understand everything about it, it totally makes sense.

2) Those are not really plot holes, they are there because the smart writer respects us and is giving us a chance to think it through for ourselves. I prefer that to being told every little detail. It has logic when we think enough.

3) Why can't all the others who keep pointing out that there are flaws and plot holes be like me? They should just enjoy this great show or go watch something else.

Somehow if anyone finds fault with the show, it is a slap in the face to them, as in: because they like something faulty, there is something wrong with them, therefore the show can have no faults. ;)

LOLZ

You sounded so frustrated teh other day! You know, I started that game mostly for your enjoyment. Partially to educate them.

It's not really a game. It's how we analyze material. You should hear our exec creative meetings - 2 creatives, 2 producers - and how we discuss everything about characters, motivation, plot. The lead creative is great with beautifully characters you can easily visualize - but she's lousy with plotting and tying everything together. The transmedia producer is great with finding the holes in the story. The art director has great way of seeing ideas - totally different than anyone else on the project. I'm really good at strategy and tying the small pieces into a coherent bigger whole. So, it falls on me to add an overlay structure to the plot concept and ask for more from the characters.

Once that happens, the other producer and I start looking at all the research that needs to happen to make everything believable. The creatives start thinking about how to solve the holes with various characters and scenarios. And then, because we work in new media, we all excitedly come up with a bunch of new ideas for extensions and audience engagement.

We hire writers for write for the various platforms. They always add more to the story. You can think of a story as many many layers. And, we have many other people who create visual concepts, live events, apps, games, research, marketing, collaborations, etc etc etc.

In short, we start with a good foundation of story and character and an understanding of how these tie into every other element, and we go from there.

It's an endless process - but it doesn't actually start with just a writer. It's a collaborative endeavor. Writers don't like to follow rules. (Okay, some do, but it is rare.) So, the producer needs to be actively involved - making sure everything the writer needs is provided to her/him and making sure that the structure of the narrative stays true to the overall story bible and needs of the project. It's a fine balance between letting the magic happen - writers are amazing creatures - and keeping everything on track. It's very very hard! But, by the time you have so many people working on something together, it isn't possible to make radical changes without big big problems....

"You know, I started that game mostly for your enjoyment. Partially to educate them." - Why thank you very much. I'd have like to have played properly, with people playing properly and not immediately, deliberately forgetting the rules. But I'm seeing that it's a very long and big game and I (and probably you) will not have the time to do it in detail. But your questions in the setup have helped me figure out how to recognise plot holes better. So thanks for that.

Because I am fascinated by the psychology of people, I copied over the long conversations of our YP superfans and broke it down for myself to see what they are actually saying. I added my own interjections to state some thoughts.

They have been explaining the criticsims away ad naseum and are tired. Why do they feel the need to explain away criticism? Why must people give up on criticizing to suit them? The premise is that their way of thinking is right and the criticizers are wrong. "Wrong" cannot be tolerated.

They mention that dissenters want to irritate those who like the show.... Why do they take it personally? A comment is a comment and has nothing to do with who likes it or not. In effect they are saying, because they like it and think they have explained away everything, dissenters must now agree with them and keep quiet. Where does this thinking come from? Do we teach this in schools???

They feel double standards that some shows are not criticised but their beloved show is nit-picked upon. - It's all in the choice of words. Nit-picking to them is thoughtful discussion on flaws for others. Even if there are nits to pick, it does not follow that the nit-picker does not like the show. JB herself is a case in point.

They complain that dissenters won't be silenced because their taste or opinions are different. However dissension was based on objective criteria and not taste. And being silenced works both ways or else there is a double standard here too. Likers can speak, dissenters cannot. What about the open-minded view that each point of view has something of value to learn from?

They speak of good ratings being an objective justification for liking the show. They seem to need objective justification for liking a show? Again, why? Just like it and be happy and let others point out flaws and be happy too.

Again they say how they would keep quiet if they did not like something.... The lack of understanding in what commenting on a site meant to discuss dramas, is evident. It is not meant to only say nice things.

They take it personally that dissension is out to make them feel bad for liking a show. Why feel bad? No one can make us feel something if we choose not to. Does this show a lack of confidence in what they like that they have to justify it to such an extent and cannot enjoy it if others disagree?

They say others find satisfaction at continuing to talk about the flaws instead of being silent. This is the thing, they are not silent about liking it and that's how they find satisfaction. So they have transferred their method of gaining satisfaction to dissenters.

None so blind as those who will not see! LOL! Fascinating.

Wow - I went back to YP 11. I can only have a conversation so long before it's utterly fruitless. Here is my final post on Episode 2 in response to an insane amount of plot-hole away explaining by a commenter:

6.2.3.2.4 Vgy7*uhb + 6.2.3.2.5 Vgy7*uhb

Can I, as a blanket response, just say “no”?

Occam’s Razor: “Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate” or “Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.”

Basically, it means that all things being equal, the simplest explanation tends to be true. It’s used in science all them time.

Either they ‘hire’ TY and bribe/blackmail him and do the same to all of the other permanent staff, OR, they ‘hire’ TY and bribe/blackmail him and manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods. The first is simplest. So, plot hole.

LOL! I really don't have the energy and the mental 'capacity' to discuss/argue/rationalise. Thus my silence. Just seeing what they are thinking is entertaining though. They are misguided and guiding each other on the wrong path but they are enjoying themselves!!! LOL!

I am also careful about not letting the same thing happen to me... I was just reading Wikipedia about "false-consensus" .... it does not apply in totality but some parts I find I may consider as applicable for our small group of consensus-seeking commenters.

"... when confronted with evidence that a consensus does not exist, people often assume that those who do not agree with them are defective in some way." - LOL! so I find them defective and they find us defective. *sigh*

"There is no single cause for this cognitive bias; the availability heuristic, self-serving bias, and naïve realism have been suggested as at least partial underlying factors." - self-serving as in to boost one's sense of being right and worthwhile and smart or something?

"Maintenance of this cognitive bias may be related to the tendency to make decisions with relatively little information. When faced with uncertainty and a limited sample from which to make decisions, people often "project" themselves onto the situation. When this personal knowledge is used as input to make generalizations, it often results in the false sense of being part of the majority." - They have stated,... if it was me .... what I'd do.... So actually some aspects of this false-consensus coginitive bias is shown forth in our commenters. :)

A friend of mine once told me that she had read that a 40 point IQ difference makes for an impossibility of clear communication. Neither party can explain well to the other. A good example would be trying to rationalize to a very young child. Somehow this situation brings that to mind.

0

If you're speaking of relative IQ, the rationalizing with a young child may not be the best of analogies because (and again the expert is someone else that I will have to quote badly) this Montessorian informed me that for children below age 6 (give or take a year) their brains have not reached a degree of maturity to process rationale .... rationalization will not work with them. (OK in that sense the analogy is OK LOLOL!)

She told me that when she saw a mother trying to verbally rationalize with a 4 year-old why his behaviour was bad, the child made very painful sounds... like groans of pain ie he wanted to please his mother but his mind could not take in the concepts that we understand rationally and he was suffering, trying to process it but not able to and only understanding that his mother would be displeased. It is only from age 6 onwards (age of reason?) that we can see the moral child emerging and they are then very concerned with who did what and they tell on friends... but not to carry tales so much as to check with an adult if a behaviour is acceptable or not by noting the adult's reaction.

Anyway, I have digressed. 40 point IQ difference? Age difference...cultural difference... confidence level .... experience. They said the "plot hole" to them was people like us who insist on commenting when we 'hate' the show. They are wrong on the 'hate' part where I'm concerned. But the real hole is the chasm of difference in attitude towards commenting and analyses.

0

:-) You're right! It's absolutely a difference in attitude.

Possibly age. And certainly intellectual training. They seem to lack reasoning skills beyond arguing their own position.

0

BTW, I just saw this on the YP Ep 11 Thread

"26.2.3.1 Vgy7*uhb September 13th, 2015 at 3:48 AM

@Growingbeautifully 26.2.3
My pleasure. Btw, there’s a new press release from SBS. Yong Pal is extended with additional 2 episodes. Two reasons for extension that were:
1. High ratings. (Apparently, SBS wanted to milk on it’s cash cow. Oh well.)
2. The writer intended to write 16 episodes but was able to complete his piece with 18 episodes.

Want to have a good laugh?

I went to a christening today. It was a lovely service, but I couldn't help but start breaking it down in my head - how I'd have that parable reader redo her 'performance' with a more dramatic reading, how much I liked the flow of the service, how I'd change the pacing of the some elements, how the sermon had significant plot holes and inconsistency of logic, how the music was good but at the wrong volume, why the lighting was good, how pleased I was with the stills I took of the christening.... LOL! :-)

Business idea, unless this already exists: Professionally produced christening/baptism.

There are professionally produced weddings, more than what wedding planners do. With all the divorces and remarriages, such production seems pointless and wasteful to this pessimist/realist. However, one is only born then baptized once. Okay, sometimes a person converts or something, then gets baptized again.

Required fields are marked *

LOL! This is some humongous occupational hazard you have!!! Even a church service is seen through the eyes of a critic viewing a performance!!! I hope the message of the parable and the sermon were not lost on you because your brain was running on different analysis at another level. :)

I used to do the readings in church, therefore nowadays I automatically note who reads well and who does not, or the way it could have been emphasized differently. So I know what you mean.

Even Jon G. says that he's got an analysis on auto-pilot going on as he watches shows.

You know, I think that's what I've been wanting to develop. I want to watch and know whether something is crap or not. But I don't have the relevant experience to recognise crap writing or crap acting as soon as it's evident. Thus my surmise that if I watch lots of good shows, maybe I'll recognise crap more easily. Which means again, I should watch few or zero bad shows so that I can cultivate my drama watching taste better ... LOL! But actually I don't think it's as simple as that. Dramas involve so many more elements working together and in balance.

I already started what I wanted to continue to do with the next OT. And I just realised that I'm inadvertently even skimming over it here. But... I have work to do. Catch ya later!

So, I want to tell you something exciting!

This last episode of Twenty Again marked a boundary crossing in Korean for me. I watched without subtitles the first time (I watched it twice) and a sentence came up that wasn't a common phrase. Yet I recognized every word in it and properly understood it! :-)

Usually, I reach this point at the 2 year mark of studying a language - understanding random sentences. I think I'm only at 1 year 3 mos for Korean with fairly passive studying. So, this is coming along very well! I'm building a good vocabulary and understanding sentence structure, the politeness levels, and conjugation. This is a big deal when I'm not studying grammar.

So, super happy! I'll do well picking this one up. I've trained my ears quite well and learned to read. Now I just have to keep building!! :-)

Now, I just want to know how to properly distinguish between formal and informal speech, and whether there is such difference in writing.

If a sentence sounds like this at the end, you have some idea:

imnika?, imnida - business formal

iyeyo?, iyeyo, iseyo?, iseyo - polite formal

if it ends in an 'ah', 'aw', 'ay' then it's probably casual

There's more levels, but these are what you'll recognized most in modern Kdramas. There are other forms in saeguks.

? Thanks.

I did figure out majority of the formal endings, but not business vs polite. Thus, polite often gets jumbled up with informal.

:-) I have pretty wide-ranging tastes.

I like TV dramas better than film dramas though. I think this has something to do with male vs female writers/directors/producers. TV is where content for women is distributed. Film is content for men. (We can discuss this at some length - but roughly it is true.)

Anyway film isn't just for men, it's by men. And when men do drama - it's really really gritty. It's not soft porn - it's full aggressive porn. Think I'm talking about sex? I'm not. I'm talking about the raw emotions in dramas. Whatever they're about. Men focus on the violence of emotion. If I had to think of a parallel, it's porn. Women like gentle love scenes - men like rough and dirty. (Lest you get the wrong idea, I've seen very little porn outside of a clip someone uses to make a point.)

Anyway, what appeals to men is less appealing to me. Might have to do with my breasticles. :-)

So, go ahead. Ask. I know you're going to want to know all about the TV/film female/male divide.

What I noticed from your list of American films, are that quite a few are the ones my husband would watch.

Less light, but still very enjoyable:

The Tourist (American version)
Tomb Raider
Indiana Jones
Star Wars (entire series)
Twister
The Italian Job (may not have watched this)
Ocean’s 11 (I'm not sure about this one)
The Matrix

I may have ended up watching most of them with him, not that I've a great memory of what I've watched or watched with any thought other than just having an entertaining 2 hours.

He does also go for the more action packed, grittier shows that I won't watch, but even he does not like too much violence and gore. Raw emotion... yes, a lot of the shows he watches seem to have that.

In the male-female divide or complementa-riness,... I believe males are more visual and have better spatial intelligence generally while females are better at language and interpreting expressions/voice tone.... among lots of other things. At a rough guess, men making shows for men need to make them more full of big gesture action and give lots of visual clues as to emotion. Women would probably be able to appreciate better, subtle characterisation, watching people communicate and develop in relationship shows as well as action. How's that for a guess???

Men catch subtleties of emotion and communication much less than women - they often need big clues to understand what is happening - and so, when they develop entertainment they go for big clues over subtlety. It's a bit like having a deaf person direct - they'd be more focused on huge visuals than subtleties of sound....

0

Susan ???
Well and good for that guess.... but why the film and TV divide? More women than men stay home for longer periods of time, therefore the bigger female audience is at home, so soaps and lady-friendly shows are aired more on TV?

Men are more likely to prefer the big screen more and to have an outing and an easy way to have a date LOL! The big screen makes everything larger than life, the way they like it so it really can't be too subtle even if it tried.

See all my wild guesses LOL!

0

Why did TV end up being the platform for women's content and film for men's?

Frankly, I don't know. I can imagine lots of factors from Dolby FX and sticky-floored theaters to men not wanting to go anywhere after work that they don't like (rom-coms and dramas).

Your guess is as good as mine!

Yes, so well produced that so many diverse elements were made to come together seamlessly. I thought the choreography for the chase scenes were fantastic, especially the one in Hong Kong when Marco Park was suspended for ages and swinging from window to window.

There was only 2 hours to it, but the emotions of the characters came through enough for us to understand their motivations. No plot holes here! LOL!

How did you like seeing Gianna Jun and Kim Soo-Hyun paired up in this prior to My Love From The Star?

0

You know, I was watching them, but I could not tell if they had any special chemistry. I just read elsewhere that they did or that this movie showed that they could work well together. Their time together was pretty short. Still it was enough for Kim Soo Hyun to know that he could work with Gianna in MLFAS.

6.2.3.2.6 Susan ??? September 13th, 2015 at 10:12 PM

6.2.3.2.7 Vgy7*uhb September 13th, 2015 at 11:04 PM

I beg to disagree, though it may not be as simple as the first, the drama shows that it’s doing the second “they ‘hire’ TY and bribe/blackmail him and manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods”. So it’s not a plot hole. It is a plot hole if the drama is not showing anything, but it does show something. And for reference I believe that you’ve already read all the scenes that I listed in my previous comments where they did “manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods”. You should even give the drama a credit since it’s doing the more difficult route, why insists for the drama to do the easy way?

Also Taehyeon is different from the other permanent staff since Taehyeon has access to the restricted area (crime scene as described by Taehyeon himself), and the other staff does not. That’s why they deal with Taehyeon differently (i.e. bribe/blackmail).

Nooooo! :-)

Seriously you’ve made a big effort to explain away a HUGE plot hole. But it’s there. It didn’t disappear.

My point is that people don’t act like that in real life. Do you go to your job / study in school and do it differently every single time? No, you develop a system that works for you and apply it over and over again. That’s how humans work. That’s why the simplicity principle applies extremely well here.

And, “You should even give the drama a credit since it’s doing the more difficult route, why insists for the drama to do the easy way?” I’m going to accept your logic fully – that when the a drama goes a more difficult route that it should lauded and equally, when a drama is lazy and does something easy, it should be condemned.

So – huge condemnation for YP for taking the lazy easy route!! :-)

It’s much easier to not bother to make a drama with consistency of character and plot and make the audience fill in the plot holes. By being lazy about not addressing secrecy in a manner that is consistent with human nature and not providing an explanation, YP has taken the easy way out. What a shame! It would have been nice if they addressed these plot holes.

Oh dear, I should not, but I kind of lump them together as kids. They may be much older than I could imagine, but I think of them as stubborn kids, just being rebellious and pig-headed for no reason other than that they like what they like and the rest of us can stuff it.

I thought you answered very well. So logically. So much so that they end up shooting themselves in their foot. But I don't think they'll ever concede.

So what are you going to bother to do next? Forget about the plot holes or still continue with another character?

6.2.3.2.7 Vgy7*uhb

I did something I should have done much sooner in this conversation - something I definitely would have done as a producer. I went and asked a physician I know about how secrecy is kept in a VIP wing of high end hospitals (because they do exist.)

He said that everyone who works there is very well paid (bribe) and signs a contract that they will not speak of anything that happens on that floor under penalty of imprisonment or death (threat).

So, basically what I was arguing was a plot hole, was indeed a plot hole.

Throws hands in air!!!!

If I had these people on my production staff, I'd have to fire them! Why? Because every meeting would run like this...

Producer: Hey - I think we need to address Sally's relationship with Bob in scene 2. You've got them dating, but they only met each other in the taxi in the last scene.

Writer: Really? I was thinking love at first sight.

Producer: I think you need more. A LOT more. As in an entire episode or two of their relationship developing. Unless you want them to stay minor characters - then we're going to need some exposition and possibly flashbacks. Maybe Sally goes drinking with her friend and describes her drunken hook up with her new-boyfriend.

Intern: Can I say something? I think the script is perfect. The audience gets to think about how they got together. We all know they started dating, so it isn't important how it happened. I think this is a really great script!!

If only we had the vision of God and can see into the future whether they ever realise what an embarrassing image they have projected of themselves.

The thing that enables this kind of persistent foolishness (to put it gently) is that everyone is using a moniker. They do not have to face the embarrassment of people knowing who they are in RL. We do not even know if one person is using more than 1 moniker. It could be that we only have 2 friends here playing and they are pretending to be 2-3 persons each.

I took up an 'online' Korean language course for fun once (Korean 101) and it gave me a bunch of pod casts with different levels of difficulty to go through and listen to and repeat etc. I only managed most of the beginner course, so I can recognise a word here and there in sentences, when a person is being polite and when not, I guess I know a few phrases and the normal ones we hear repeated.

If I don't have subs (and I sometimes watch without if I'm impatient) I can understand the stock phrases... 'What to do?' 'Trust me', 'I'll take responsibility' 'Please help' 'Get lost'... stuff like that.

Why do you ask?

How have you been studying your Korean? Online too or do you have a tutor?

I have books with CDs, dictionaries, google translate, the internet, Kdramas, etc.

I play a visual Korean dictionary in my car with about 1346 words, so everywhere I go, I'm learning vocab.

I watch maybe 2 hours of Kdramas per day.

I spell out (in hangeul) and look up phrases I hear in these dramas with google translate, so I'm getting really good at reading and spelling.

I make tables of phrases with both the translated and actual meanings, the hangeul and the romanized pronunciation.

I use a verb dictionary to learn conjugations of common verbs.

I'm just starting to take common phrases and conjugate them into different tenses so I can add them to my table.

I go through the lessons in my books.

I read through blogs where people have lots of good Korean learning advice and examples.

I also finally bought an iPod Touch so I can go for walks and listen to and repeat dialogues...

Eventually, I'll get a language partner. 9 more months will mark 2 years, that's about when I'll be ready for light conversation.

0

Why do I ask?

I was just curious. I wondered how well others do with listening to dramas. I think I'm about the same you when it comes to Kdrama comprehension.

Sure, thanks for your understanding!

I actually think it's more problematic to talk about (and frankly, poke fun at) other people here than to talk directly to them, because it comes off more cliquish and snide this way. I know that groups will naturally form anywhere, and we're happy to host all of them -- but this fosters more "us vs. them" mentality and isn't a spirit I like to see. Talking about it in the relevant thread does draw more heat, so I understand if you want to avoid that, but heated conversations are welcome as long as they're civil.

To be absolutely clear, talking about Yong-pal and what you love and hate about it is totally kosher. We love that. Keep doing that. Taking shots at other commenters where you think they won't see you -- less kosher.

It's an OK day. Not too long a meeting but still I've got to write it up. I'm wondering if the PSI will rise or fall now that it has rained. It does not look any clearer, only has become cooler. If it remains in the unhealthy range, I'll cancel my session today and have a relaxing time at home.

It's about time for you to get some shut-eye, I imagine. :)

0

Usually heavy rain, like thunderstorm downpour can wash pollutants out of the air. Light rain is not as effective unless it rains for a long time. However, as long as the fires are still burning and the wind blows the smoke your way, rain-cleansed air will last only a short time.

0

Yes Snickers?
That is precisely it. I kept checking the PSI to see if it would go low enough to continue with my session. In spite of the rain which was about half an hour's worth, I guess... still no go. So I'm home now, writing up my meeting notes and emailing/skyping etc for work. :)

It still looks like we're in a cloud with buildings a little blurred out around us. :(

Books: Elizabeth George, Isaac Asimov, JK Rowling, Tolkien, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, CS Lewis .... prefer British authors for whodunits, Sir AC Doyle and even modern works with Sherlock Holmes in it, Ellis Peters, Elizabeth Peters, PD James, Agatha Christie,.... PG Wodehouse, ...

Movies/TV : I can't name all the shows but they would be in the same genre as the books. All those action films that I named from your list before, all made from the books of Tolkien, Rowling, Lewis. All Star Wars, whole Raiders of the Lost Ark franchise. Among the romances I recall the old ones: While You Were Sleeping, When Harry Met Sally. I particularly liked The Lake House.

Just for fun, I watched Ji Chang Wook in Kara: Secret Love and Five Fingers just the last episode. Two great contrasting shows, 2 years apart. His basic style is the same. Joo Ji Hoon too was nice to watch again.

One was too light and fluffy and developments did not really make sense but they had to squeeze in everything within an hour plus. The other (I'm guessing from the last episode alone) was probably too melo and too long and the little I saw was already a cry-fest.

Five Fingers: Well I have to hand it to the actors that although I never bothered with their development, their wrung out emotions did get me to feel somewhat with them. Still it does not seem like the kind of show I'd want to sit through 30 hours for. :)

JJH stayed stronger through it - he hadn't yet thrown the towel when I suspended the punishment game.

JJH strikes me as a very good actor with either very poor taste in dramas or a very poor management team.

New fall TV season in the U.S. will start in a week or so. Not planning to watch any new series. Sticking with Supernatural, The Simpsons, and Shark Tank. Another question

How long does a TV/movie actor remember his lines? Esoteric and jargon that he doesn't understand won't be remembered for long. But what about factoids?

I remember seeing an actor (or an actress) on a talk show. The host asked something which I thought the actor should know because he played a character who knew such thing. Apparently not. Maybe he just forgot temporarily like we all do sometimes. Still, some actors research a lot to play historical characters. Is the knowledge actually retained?

No... they can have a say. The director has the final say. If there's a Mexican standoff, the producer gets involved.

Film sets run a lot like normal businesses - lots of ordinary, lots of chaos, lots of problem solving, happy times, grumpy times, etc. So, usually things work out. Someone brings up a concern, someone looks into, something is adjusted.

Major actors have a full script in advance, so those concerns would be addressed long before they got on set.

Could you, would you on a train?
Say!
In the dark?
Here in the dark!
Would you, could you, in the dark?

Would you, could you, in the rain?
Could you, would you, with a goat?
Would you, could you, on a boat?

You do not like them.
SO you say.
Try them! Try them!
And you may.
Try them and you may I say.

:D Dr Seuss I presume. We have a few of the books. Watched the Cat in the Hat movie though. Actually liked it.

Movies - I seldom choose, (too lazy), but my husband knows what I like. The kids choose their own and go with friends. If I go to a movie it's because I'm accompanying someone or I want to see it, but I'm never alone. We sometimes go out to watch and sometimes buy/download. More the latter now. Sometimes my kids will choose something to download and all of them plus mother will watch it together at home. We used to watch on paid cable but we've stopped subscribing.

An oldie that my daughter suddenly told me she wants to watch (for reasons unknown to even to herself), is The Sound of Music. I probably have the full DVDs somewhere.

0

Good Lord! I will say one thing in defense of YP. Somebody's ON IT in the sound department. Seriously, without those audio cues - happy background, ominous background, triumphal background - I'd think I was watching the video playback of a boardroom meeting.

I'm thinking of lifting some of that audio and cuing it up while I work -

SUSAN:

Inserts flash drive into her computer.

Cue ominous music.

SUSAN:

Goes to lunch.

Cue happy music.

SUSAN:

Finishes typing up a document on her computer

Cue triumphal music.

:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

0

@ Susan ?????

For this show in particular, is it not rather a sign that visually something is lacking that we need sound cues? I'd say for most shows, the music/sounds just augment the moment and carry us along into the next scene, but with YP, it was maybe almost the other way around? LOL!

I did appreciate in Twenty Again, that in the first 4 episodes when things looked dark for No Ra, the fun musical cue at the episode ends gave me confidence that brighter times were ahead. I too would have dropped the show if I had thought it was going to be a feel bad, rather than a feel good show.

0

What fun ... having a whole bunch of sound clips to play to denote the mood of the moment.

I'm noticing nowadays that I like playing OSTs in the background, but, that if I really want to concentrate, I need silence. Is that a sign that my multi-tasking ability is going down the drain??? Oh no!!!!

0

I just watched most of YP raw. Maybe too much was exposition. Did not quite 'wow'. One part was maybe better than expected. Joo Won's tiredness seems more apparent. Not so for Kim Tae Hee although she was in many scenes this time. She looks well rested.

LOL! I am watching it now and have exactly the same feeling - it's mostly tell and very little show.

Kim Tae Hee is stinking as an actress. Sorry, but that's the truth. Frankly, the entire cast is underutilized.

I have a lot to say on the poor directing and really bad editing... but I'm super busy right now.

I'm working on IP protection, corporate structuring, and a pitch to someone we'd like as a project mentor. Always good to have advisers and mentors no matter how big a project gets. I'm kinda excited while working on it - you'd be floored if you knew who it is.

Anyway, I need my wits about me today....

Do you know when I write the most here? When I'm editing the writers' work. That process always makes me want to watch other peoples' stories and think about what works and what doesn't.

For example: the visual storytelling in YP was quite high in the first 6 episodes, changed tone utterly for episodes 7 - 9, and then kind of wound down through episodes 10 -12 until it became virtually non-existent in episodes 13. Why? I've read multiple accounts about what chaos, unhappiness and arguing reigns on that set... maybe all this fighting is the reason for such an uneven drama.

Aack! I have to stop. I need to go back to work...

Sure, take your time ... it's just me being bored and remembering things I wondered about.

You can take your time about this here too.... Here's another thing... I've copied this from Lollypip's recap of Mrs Cop Ep 13. I'm fascinated and am wondering if it is possible to have "good" writing and bad storytelling going on at the same time? I've put in bold the parts that gave me pause.

"It’s very telling, by the way, that a simple thing like bringing back one character can make this show go from boring to interesting, just like that. It proves what I’ve been saying, that the show has all the ingredients to make a very good drama, but just seems to be weak in the storytelling department. What’s strange is that I think the writing is good enough, I have no complaints there, it’s just that the story that the script tells is so shaky. When you have a good solid story, your audience is willing to overlook a few weaknesses like a bad character or a boring case-of-the-week."

Is this talking about a story well-written but badly directed? Or a well-written non-story? Can a shaky story be considered well-written? Is it possible to be a solid story with bad (badly written) characters and be boring at the same time? I would equate a solid story with characters and plot that are far from boring, and a shaky story with bad writing.

From just reading, what is your interpretation?

There's more than one storyteller in a drama: the writer, the director AND the editor have a hand in that. You could have an amazing script, but a cr*p director can still make a hash of it. Remember, the director doesn't just yell out 'Go', 'Stop' (okay - they never yell that out :-)) - they actually plan for all the scenes. Every visual. That's visual storytelling. Then there's the edit and after effects like sound - that captures the audio AND visual storytelling. If those suck, it might as well be a book.

I can't believe you've sucked me into commenting rather than working. Although I did just finish a document... Cue triumphal music.

I think that Lollypip is saying that the story premise wasn't good. I would guess that this isn't true. If the writing is good, then the original story premise was probably great. But maybe the ratings weren't strong or something (I don't know) and the suits started asking for new directions to the show.

I know I read here that the show changed directions quite early on. So, if the writing's good, that's to the writer's credit. However, it's pretty d*mn hard to come up with a completely new coherent concept that's super well thought out and organized well with a concept for every week and then write at lightning speed. Not enough time.

Planning a script takes weeks or months - not a weekend after the distributors or producers ask for an overhaul. Any quick overhaul of the script concept and story plotting is likely to have holes or lack of impact.

LOL! I've the knack of asking irresistible questions. :D You know I'm always grateful that you take your time and energy to entertain my hankering for insider knowledge and all round information, don't you?

So let me try and put this into my own words here... the writer is OK, the original premise and the story that had been planned had enough going for it. But again Someone had to put a spoke in the wheel and turn the writer's life into a nightmare. Therefore the story has become uneven and weak in parts.

And when we add in the other show story-telling elements of directing visuals and sound which might not be respecting the writing fully, it is possible to say that the writing is good but the story-telling is not.

I've not seen Mrs. Cop, so I can't comment directly on it.

One thing you keep doing and you shouldn't is making the directing and sound and editing etc subservient to the script. A recipe is just a recipe. A good cook needs lots of technique and may change ingredients. The writing isn't more important than the other parts.

Then the different parts will all bear about equal weight in the balance and how much greater an emphasis is given to each part depends on how the whole show is to be balanced out as it progresses? If Someone decides the emphasis has to change from Character A to Character B, all parts have to be adapted to support this change?

0

Yep.

On to another thought of RL that makes for the very much used drama trope of hiding truths or what are perceived as truths.... and the consequences of this. Question: keeping something from someone that they don't seem to realise or understand... is it = a lie?

Dilemma/dilemna - tell or hide from a sweet soul who lacks confidence that a certain series of unfortunate events could well be due to something she did, said, is projecting. There is no urgency to relay this unpleasant 'message', other than a vague thought that it could help her avoid similar difficulties in the future. There is no nice way to tell her and I can just imagine the reaction... What you, too!!! And I thought you were a friend! I trusted you! Etc etc.

My question is how do producers get paid? Do they draw a salary and/or take percentage of the profits? What happens when the project loses money?

"She was Pretty" - Watched it and read the recap. I feel positive about it. Some background of the main relationship, the 4 main characters with varying degrees of personality showing through and the setup are all in place. Very efficient and neat in just one episode. So the hijinks and twists can already begin.

It feels very assured that it knows what it wants to do. While I believe we probably know what to expect, I also anticipate some interesting and unexpected developments to take place. Already Hye Jin has gained notice and more positively than I would have expected, so soon. Might I hope that the downtrodden heroine trope gets quickly over and done with and her makeover happen naturally, for her own self more than to please another. Better yet, how about no makeover at all! That will really be an interesting first. :)

It was slow with Twenty Again. It took 4.5 episodes of No Ra being badly treated before things looked up. I was disheartened for a bit but got engaged in her arc and so enjoyed it when things turned around for her.

With She Was Pretty, it's more instantaneous, but has not reached the same level of 'like'. I'll probably need more time to be more fully invested, although I can't say I'm not already to a great extent. Maybe a slower buildup towards Hye Ri's turnaround would have helped me, however other commenters are already in love with the show.

I'm finding it cute that they are using The Carpenters' "Close To You" as the couple theme. It was one of my favorite songs. Quite apt too since they are close to each other physically now and may well be more emotionally attuned before long, if the pace keeps up.

Books:
John Green, Michael Grant, Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins, Pittacus Law, Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson series), Eoin Colfer (previously a fave), E.L. James, Scott Westerfeld

They may read just a book in a series or the series if any. Titles mentioned ... Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices, Game of Thrones (book and not the game)

Games/Apps :

Minecraft, 1010!, Audition (killed one keyboard!!!), Crusader Quest, Maplestory (previous fave), Pokemon Fire Emblem, The Zelda franchise, Clash of Clans, Clash of Kings, Clash of Zombies (real-time strategy games?), Summoner's War, Elsword, Team Fortress 2, Dirty Bomb, Realm of the Mad God, Tap Titans, Magic Touch, Platoon Inklings (Nintendo?)

What people seem to play as they commute: Candy Crush, Subway Surfer among heaps others.

No, I just wanted to get a sense of your viewing tastes by region. Singapore has a large foreign community. So, if you were from Australia or South Africa or Canada originally, your viewing tastes might reflect two backgrounds.

0

My family may reflect the more English educated bunch.

More mixed bunches will have different tastes maybe. We already have a good mix among Singaporeans since we are made up of 4 main ethnic groups to begin with, so even without considering our immigrants we are varied.

There is a large group watching free-to-air made locally shows in their ethnic languages of course. My family are the first, second and third generation of the large group. We straddle what was common before ie TV viewing whatever was on and the 'now' generation style of downloading what we want to watch.

0

I'm noticing a change of platform for older viewers. Even though many were raised on TV, a large segment is embracing web-based on demand viewing. It's both surprising and gratifying.

0

Me! me! I'm in the 'older' viewer category. My generation spans landline phones - pagers/faxing/telegrams - humongous mobile devices ..... finally smart phones and chats.

My first encounter with IT included disk packs the size of a photocopier machine that I had to physically and carefully mount and dismount... very heavy. My screens showed originally the DOS prompt and at work, mini-computers without picture graphics. Now laptops and tablets and we're trying to get our clients out of Windows and into the Web and looking towards newer technologies as and when.

0

You're not the older generation. You're their kid. I'm noticing adoption of desktop and mobile platforms by people over 70. That's impressive to me.

Yes I noticed that the exposition in She Was Pretty is so much less and yet we know what the relationships are.

I just watched YP ep 14. So many lengthy scenes of 2 people talking again.... I was wondering if we are going a little into melo territory - a revenge-seeking Yeo Jin is hard to like as a heroine. It might be 'the normal reaction' of her character, at least it is consistent with her as a child and adult in that she punished/took revenge on her father. So are we now to see episodes of her turning from the revenge path into the forgiveness one that she was asked to consider? This episode was about her and her victims. Are we supposed to care? Do I care? Why don't I care?

More rhetorical questions: Are we going to have the re-birth of the Lavender garden as a metaphor for a re-birth of a sweeter Yeo Jin? So now the show is going to be about Yeo Jin mainly? What a waste of Ahjumma and Nurse Oh. So much time waffled away to result in TH getting a ring? What's with the theme of TH getting on with older women. So now we have the TH-housekeeper relationship?

What I might want. More of Chae Young. Chae Young being able to 'save' Do Joon. I don't know how far it may be possible or plausible to have a forgiveness arc, but if they want to go for a sweetish ending, it would be nice for Yeo Jin, TH, Do Joon and Chae Young to be a bit more family like at the end. Soap opera happy ending?

:-) Because they didn't develop the characters!!! They relied on plot, but pretty much ran out of anything clever post episode 6. Now we are watching a horrible rehash of ever Kdrama trope ever.

"Are we going to have the re-birth of the Lavender garden as a metaphor for a re-birth of a sweeter Yeo Jin? So now the show is going to be about Yeo Jin mainly? What a waste of Ahjumma and Nurse Oh. Clearly they have massively overhauled the script. I don't care what the press releases say. It's obvious. The set-up was completely different.

"What I might want. More of Chae Young. Chae Young being able to ‘save’ Do Joon. I just realized from reading your comments that there is absolutely no ending I'm hoping for. Nothing and no one I care about. I'm only watching for performance - and even Joo Won is flagging now.

Episode: 2

"The set-up is quite clear at this point.

YP has been caught by white collar criminals who both want his talents and believe he can be effectively blackmailed long term. YP will want to protect his sister and eventually Sleeping Beauty. A conflict will arise that jeopardizes these. He will need help to solve a mystery and vanquish the white collar baddies. He’ll get that help from the bald-headed mobster."

Episode: 5

"Which brings me to my picks for this drama’s likely Scooby team: I vote for Kim Tae-Hyun, Han Yeo-Jin, Doo-Chul, Man-Sik, head nurse, a few of the residents, and Detective Kim."

They've got some tricky territory to navigate. She's still 'married'. So, CHS has to come to grips with emotions for an unavailable woman. And he knows he's an ass if he points out her husband's behavior to manipulate the situation. Of course, he doesn't know what's happening in the background. Then there's the other issue - she's not in love with him. Although, I think her friend, RYY, is quite savvy on that matter. She already understands his feelings - so perhaps she'll help HNR blossom her feeligns when the time is right. It's all awkward all the way around. You know what's weird? When I think of My Love Eun Dong, I get "irritation" vibes. Maybe I found it's treatment of the same subject on the melo side or it took it all too seriously. Oh she disappeared again.... oh his sister is also all alone... so he finds her and its heart wrenching for him (but I don't care)... oh the husband is pathetic and a lying schemer (just hate him) ... 2nd lead female just gets my goat (does she need to exist in this show?) ... Eun Dong is also kind of pathetic and has the little son to tie her down (still don't care) and it goes on quite sedately and seriously to its logical end.

I prefer a light hearted approach to exactly the same thing. Of course if the tone shifts, which I don't think it will, by now I already like Hyun Seok and am invested in No Ra, so I'll still stay the course. I prefer a show that makes me laugh, that shows off foibles and maybe that does take itself or it's subject too seriously. Or I just don't like melos much! :)

To me these are nearly the exact same show.

Man has first love that he's never gotten over and thus he's still single at 38.

That first love disappeared suddenly one day.

That first love reappears in his life much later, but is already married and has a son.

He learns what kind of husband she has and is angry that she is with that kind of guy.

The woman was oblivious to the man's first love until they meet again.

The woman needs to grow and become independent before their love can happen.

The son is an important issue, but not enough to prevent their relationship.

There are professional issues for the two men regarding a development of a relationship between the OTP.

There is another woman who loves the man. He's never considered her even once.

The woman has a female friend who will facilitate the OTP.

The OTP is gonna happen.

There will be a reconciliation with the husband - in the sense of forgiveness - as the woman moves on to the OTP and the husband moves on with her life.

The only difference seems to be the actual story and the tonal difference.

So, I might go with your "Or I just don’t like melos much! :) "

Eeek! All my formatting was ignored!! That was supposed to be an unordered list!

What did you use to key in your list? I know formatting goes poof when I use Notepad. I get auto Returns added to the end of every row instead of where I place them.

I did it directly in the comment box.

YP has got to be the most inconsistent drama of the year. It managed to surpass Producers in the regard. I love to know the behind the scenes on that. I'm absolutely sure that that drama is more interesting than the one they're putting on the screen.

No chance to watch it yet. I'll see if I like it better than the previous 2-4 episodes.

I may have found the first few minutes of YP Ep 14 sadly ridiculous that the man they looked down upon a few days ago, they are kow-towing to now.

I liked that he forced the situation where the hospital staff were unable to pay him obeisance and went back to being himself.

I did not like the long talks that the nurses had with him. It could have been cut short and been shot in the hospital.

Chief Lee going overboard crazy with fear was a bit extreme, although I know we had fore-shadowings of it before. However again, I felt it took too long a scene.

Having to reconcile with rooting for or disapproving a heroine who is killing or supporting the killing of her enemies is not something I want to do.

The part where every surgeon wanted to take turns to operate on Yeo Jin was ridiculous!!! Worse than Doctor Stranger except that fortunately it happened only once. (Doc Stranger had multiple surgery competitions)

I still felt that exposition was a lot. I did not feel that I watched much action.

I know I was thinking that the security guard leaving Tae Hyun and chasing the dog and the state of the greenhouse might be metaphors.

Will Yeo Jin leave Tae Hyun and pursue her revenge? Or will he be forced to leave YJ?

Can lavender be planted and thrive in the greenhouse of YJ's heart if Tae Hyun stays to plant it? LOL.

Hahahahaha! I've ruined you! You're so critical now. :-)

The thing is, you've got to balance being critical with enjoying things. Sometimes let your brain tune in, other times 'dial it down'. And with YP, that means dialing it down to 20%.

Basically I know I will like what I like, even if it is criticized by reviewers, and appropriately so. I do not like the revenge arc of Yeo Jin and I had too much of the exposition in Ep 13. So I do not like Ep 14.

And no matter how much Liar Game is correctly criticized, I like it. So I guess for me it's not a matter of dialing down the brain but either some things get noticed and irritates or I don't notice and I go on happily liking something anyway. :D Then I ask in all innocence... what was wrong with it? LOL!

Ah! I think I get it perfectly - I'm looking at technical elements, you're looking at content. Sometimes those overlap.

You're uncomfortable with a character you like committing reprehensible acts while other characters you like under react. I get this. Normally, it isn't a problem for me - I don't see characters in films as real. I disassociate their behaviors from reality, so I almost see them as cartoons. When this doesn't happen - when I can truly believe a character and a performance - as happens with very good films or very good actors (Kang Dong Won), then I become very invested.

I think that you're probably considering Yeo Jin as someone real who is committing atrocious acts and Tae Hyun as someone who isn't justifiably horrified. This concept is horrifying to you. How can you like these people? Nearly everyone in this world is cavalier toward violence. They're all pathological. :-)

True.

I, on the other hand, was noticing the beautiful camera framing, the new pacing, the improvement in Joo Won's acting this episode, the weaving back in of minor characters, etc. The production was more confident, so I enjoyed it more. Kim Tae Hee can't act her way out of a bag, her haircut and color are dreadful, and her costuming is ugly, but I like the way Joo Won pretends to love her.

I think I'm finally seeing the whole arc. I'm pretty much sure that I could rewrite the whole scene by scene and improve it. (I don't have time though!)

As far as Liar Game goes, I was really really bored. And then I started analyzing why. And that made me mad - because it didn't need to be that way. Me being bored and let down wasn't necessary. It was just very bad writing. And where was the producer(s) who needed to step in and fix that??! I can see now from Twenty Again that Lee Sang-Yoon can actually act. He sort of needs to warm into it, but he can do it. Kim So-Eun can't. Oh, she was so bad in SWWTN. That writer was a giver. If she can't work with that material, she's hopeless.

Once upon a time, DB comment box accepts HTML lists. Not any more.

Based on my tests, all block level HTML elements are converted into paragraphs. Image tags and most of the inline formatting elements are ignored.
