Javabeans has up an interview with a PD. I felt bad for her - I think she was super excited to get the interview, but didn't have good equipment. I'm tempted to mail her a lavalier mic.

I have yet to have a chance to listen/watch the interview. I'm still at my client's place and making a quick foray here. Gotta go!

Wow! That interview was insightful. It even touched on the things we are discussing here like ratings and changing the focus of the story in mid series from the PD's point of view. It's cute that he says he does not know what the audience likes, they are ahead of him... I guess he just goes with what seems right and hopes for the best!!! Listening to him speak on trying to cope from shoot to shoot and going for what will hopefully work better or having to work with someone who disagrees with him, makes me think that considerations about maintaining a show's integrity may be a luxury for him.

I would have liked to know how they manage the live shoots and editing just before the show airs. It would be a nail biting way to work, but is it necessary just so that the ratings can determine how things go and if they can earn more or not? Are other countries producing shows in the same way? I feel I'd always prefer to have a script all prepared and only slightly tweaked as production is underway, but I wonder how far this is possible nowadays.

As far as I know,

If a network likes a concept, a pilot is shot. Base various audience test showings, the network decides whether to commit to certain number of episodes.

For an existing series, the renewal/cancellation notices can come early or late. The writing team and production crew pretty much has everything all planned out for the next season (or next few seasons) before the current one ends.

I was part of an audience test for an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, sitting in a viewing room with a few people, pushing buttons when I liked or didn't like something. The episode were already segmented to "insert commercials here." It aired a few months after that test.

I'm just watching the rest of the interview now (I'm still working - it's been a loooooooong few days). In fact someone called earlier and I had to ask which day of the week it was! Hah! :-) What a glamorous life I lead....

From his credits and video 1, it's clear that he's a director. He doesn't really seem to to production work. So, while he's focused on shooting and not worrying about what the audience likes, somewhere else there's a producer who is.

In the first video he talks about getting scripts at the last minute. Note @snickers how he said that he has an overall idea, but won't find out what he's shooting until the last minute? That's what I meant when I said below (some thread further down) that a writer can come in so late with material that a director can only make minor tweaks. There's no time for major rewrites.

You know what was interesting - how he said that he liked to focus on love arcs. As long as he's talking about bromances he's on point - but the minute there's a woman involved, I don't find his direction compelling. That was the big problem with Master's Sun. The characters were interesting, their romantic relationship was not.

Re Park Shi Hoo's casting:

I'm surprised at how strong the emotions are.

I've 2 reactions:
1. It's a case of he said, she said. We don't know what happened. All I know for sure is that he had a one-night stand, which may or may not have been consensual.
No one mentioned in that thread the fact that he was trying to leave his former agency, and that Never goes well in K-ent. Many a star have fallen victim to traps and threats when they try. There has been posts on the horrible background of the girl, and how she was promised starring roles by his former agent if she'd entrap him. It is a possibility.

2. What do his one-night stands tell us about him? That he isn't a moral person, but for that I'm going to say: Let he who is without sin throw the first stone.
It also tells me he is stupid, to go about it so openly at that particularly time when he is having friction with his agent. Since the incident, I think of his as a pretty face w/o a lot of brains or moral fibre.

Who do I no longer watch?
Woody Allen. His taking nude pictures of his lover/ partner's underaged adoptive daughter is something we do know for sure. For that I say, Yuck. Shame on him. I don't care to watch any more films coming out of that mind of his, thank you very much.

"What do his one-night stands tell us about him? That he isn’t a moral person"

Morality is relative. Japan has a relatively open sexual culture. Saudi wants women's bodies covered in public. I think we all draw the line with behavior where we are personally and culturally comfortable with it.

It's interesting how the messiness of morality intersects with our ability to face people. And when a person's profession both makes us more likely to know of their 'transgressions' and makes it possible for us to easily avoid products that they were involved with making.

For the most part, there are very many people in the world who do things that we individually would find repugnant. But, we still buy watermelons from their farm, televisions from their company, a meal at their restaurant, etc.... And that's bc we have no idea about the people behind those products. We might, occassionally, learn about some neighbor's peccadillo if we live somewhere gossipy, but for the most part most people's lives are private.

But with entertainment, nothing is private... And knowing firsthand how inaccurate the media can be (for better and for worse)... The best you can do as a public person is try to live well and hope that nothing made up gets attached to you. Because when you do or are accused of doing things that others find immoral, your entire career is on the line.

Reposting from 98.3.2.1.2 Growingbeautifully August 25th, 2015 at 6:26 PM to start fresh, in case there's anything more to say about this.

Hi @Snickers and Susan

I’m just trying to iron out the points here:

1) I come to a show wanting funny-cute then after a few episodes it turns makjang. I can choose to watch makjang but I may not choose to watch it in the show that I wanted funny-cute. (Susan’s steak and ice-cream analogy). People may leave but no new viewers are gained since we’re in the middle of the series.

2) I watch a show that starts out good and which suits my funny-cute preference. It changes to good makjang. The show becomes different from what I expected but I like the good makjang it has become, so I stick with it (@Snickers quality over quantity analogy).

What is being posited: There are many reasons for a drop in viewership but over time and taken across many instances, the likelihood that the change in writing affected viewership of shows is greater than any other reason.

In a drama collaboration, most of what the production teams decide and do seem to hinge on what is written. It seems to me from reading comments all over so this is not at all the results of a controlled experiment…

Very good writing plagued with bad direction, acting, music still gives a show an acceptable story to follow. People who came in accepting the lousy direction, acting etc will continue for the story.

Writing which was A and became B, whether the quality of B is good or bad, even with good direction, acting etc is more likely to lose some people who came in for A. I read that people say they loved the actors but even they could not save the show for them.

I presume there must have been properly run surveys by now on why people watch or drop shows? Do these bear out any of the points here?

Actually gaining viewership midseason is possible, with or without writing changes. It depends on your competitions.

"Actually gaining viewership midseason is possible, with or without writing changes. It depends on your competitions."

Depends on the type of show, length of its run, and availability of access to previous episodes.

Variety shows can pick up people at any time.

Dramas (now that VOD is so widespread) can pick up audience mid-season, but usually don't grab much. Only if they get huge buzz and people want to check it out is that likely. And usually that's early in the run....

3) Fear of Missing Out or herding is external to a drama.

0

Required fields are marked *

Might this 'herding' instinct have some bearing on the popularity of Healer and also why some people hated the hype around it? Because of the hype, more people came on board and some of them probably were just 'sheep' following the crowd. I never understood why some hated the fact that Healer was popular, but if they felt that it was not all that great to begin with, then it's popularity to them was just 'sheep' action and not because discerning viewers liked it. It just occurred to me that this could explain why.

I think so. It's part of the psychology behind why certain thing's popularity explodes. Children toys come to mind: A toy you never heard of in summer. Suddenly, just before Christmas, it's all sold out and seems like every parent is trying to their hands on it.

To summarize:

SWWTN's writing changed causing X number of viewers to abandon it.

To what extent is the new writer responsible losing these viewers?
1. All of it because he overruled the other writer and the PD.
2. Some because the writers and PD all more or less agreed on these changes.
3. Little because he was following the PD's vision.

None of those options matter.

A writer change doesn't happen out of the clear blue sky. The producer arranges it. So, the fault lies with both the producer and the writer. There is no writer on the planet that can be utterly controlled by the producer. I know, I've tried! :-) It's a current fantasy of mine. Ain't gonna happen. A writer is pretty much responsible for what they write. A producer is responsible for hiring someone *rappy.

What about the director?

I've heard of many stories of rewrites, sometimes by the same writers. Did writers initiate all of those?

It seems strange that everyone else would consign to letting the project go down the drain when they feel the writing is not working out right.

Not everything that is written gets shot or eventually makes it to the screen, right? I've heard writers complaining about this too. Who actually pick what stays and goes?

0

Yes, rewrites are normal. Usually with the same writers. Almost never initiated by writers.

However, you can't control a writer's speed as much as you'd like. With live shoots for Korean dramas I can imagine that scripts could easily come in so late that there's not much ability for teh director to do more than last minute tweaks.

Of course, the overall concept of the drama would have needed to be outlined episode by episode prior to production - otherwise how would they build sets, cast, hire extras, hire crew, etc etc.

Basically what I'm saying is that it's give and take between both sides. Neither one is the skipper. One has the mainsail, the other has the jib and they take turns on the rudder.

0

I remember Kim Hyun Joong's comments while shooting AOF/IG about having to quickly relearned the lines due to rewrites. Quite hard on everyone involved.

0

"the likelihood that the change in writing affected viewership of shows is greater than any other reason"

I think it would be more accurate to say - a change in quality or tone or premise of a show. Writing can certainly instigate these things, but it's not the only thing. Loss of budget resulting in significantly lower production values and loss or replacement of key cast members could also do it.

(This was a drive-by comment.... I'm super busy... but not important! LOL I'll come back later...)

The writing can be fabulous, but if the actors and production values s*ck, it's hard to get a big audience. Unless its a grade school play. Then the fanservice pretty much does the trick. ;-)

Oooh... just read Lollypip's comments on 'Mrs Cop' Ep 7 and guess what, she's saying exactly what we've been discussing about the change in the show, but is accepting it. At first glance at the stills, I noticed immediately that for a show called Mrs Cop, she appeared in very few of the stills... so strange... then I read just the comments and saw this.

"I don’t know what happened to the show that we were supposed to be watching about an experienced female cop who tries unsuccessfully to balance her work and her family life, but I’m giving up on that premise for now. ... I suppose it’s possible that the writer saw the initial response to the story and decided to try something new, but it’s strange to think you’re watching a show about a cop who’s an absent mother, when her family life is barely even mentioned. So rather than continue to complain about it, I’m just going to accept it.

At this point we’ve spent so much time in the last few episodes focusing on Do-young and her development as a detective, I’m just going to treat her as the real lead of this drama for now. For some reason the writers have taken a left turn and Mrs. Cop is an entirely different show now than it was when it started. Not that I’m really complaining, believe it or not, because I actually like what we’re being given now. ... So if the show is going to make this more about Do-young and her education in learning to be a god detective — well okay, count me in. It’s not the show I expected, but it’s still a fun and entertaining drama."

So what would you do? If you're like me, (I'm not watching this show though) and I was watching it, I might continue watching while grumbling. Unless like Lollypip, I liked the change in focus. How about you?

I feel, for me, if it irritates, I start by grumbling... I may still watch but if another show comes along before the current one stops being irritating, I'd be more than ready to jump ship.

I may even straddle more than one irritating show until I feel I'm wasting my time.

I was interested to note that other viewers have mentioned how they used to religiously complete every series they started, but cannot do so now. I too used to complete every show, just as I used to read every word of the story in a book for completeness... but no longer.

And why.... even I myself am guessing... but with more years one's patience may be shorter in some areas than in others, is what I'm feeling.

Lollypip also committed to recapping it. She's nearly halfway in, so she's gonna have to stick it out.

She's also doing something I do with shows that aren't quite what I expected, but aren't too bad either - I find good parts to examine and enjoy.

I had a roommate in university who was an actor. Great guy. Currently a character actor. Anyway, we had a huge film addiction. And we lived near this amazing video rental place. HUGE stock of foreign and old films. Plus current ones. We had a stack every week. Lots of films are crazy bad - it's true - but there's almost always some redeeming element. Great camera work. One unbelievably good character actor in the midst of sh*t. Really beautiful background music. Haunting sound effects. Super cinematography. Something. I bet if you continue to watch a show you find boring, and stop concentrating on the plot or main characters and just watch everybody and everything else, you'll find some things that really impress you!

Hi Susan,
I had the impression that many people do this. Most of us start off a little uncertain but with enough goodwill to give a thing/a show a chance. If it seems to be a little wonky, we try to work around what displeases and look for a silver lining. If we've invested so much time already and feel that we might as well complete the show, or had no choice but to watch, we may either grab on to the tiniest bit of silver to justify how we've spent our time, or we watch and relieve our frustrations in some way. It might even be somewhat cathartic to let loose over a show if we are unable to do so over something else in RL that sucks.

I tend to continue watching even amidst poor reviews and do what I told @Snickers above.

The exceptions: shows like Warm and Cozy and The Time I Loved You... the irritation factor was too high, I could not watch except in very small bits and because they were recapped, I still knew roughly what was happening. And I have to admit that hardly watching TTILY did not stop me from ranting anyway LOL!

In our dense population, infection is everywhere. The people who've been here for a bit have built up enough resistance to go about so that picking up bugs does not mean they will get sick. Being out and about when one is not 100% well is not a big deal here. We also have folks who do wear a mask as they work so as to reduce the spread of germs.

However at times, it's really a toss up whether the clients infect us or vice versa LOL!

No, really, if we are coughing badly and sneezing we don't go around seeing anyone.

When it comes to young kids (I volunteer weekly and spend time with 3-6 year olds), of course we are quite particular. I tell the parents to keep their kids home if they exhibit any sick symptoms. Our greatest fear is the Hand, Mouth, Foot Disease that is the bane of all childcare centres and schools for young kids. There was a time some years many centres had to close for weeks to break the infection.

Interesting because I don't think the cast of Friends pulled in Friends-like money per episode for any of their post-Friends project.

Yes, Kim Tae Hee is awake and slowly trying to get up and about from the looks of Ep 7. At least Joo Won who it seems had to work without much sleep got a chance to have literal shut eye (as a patient himself) in some scenes.

I might have to pop in over there and post the ratings... I mean... the thread only has 57 measly comments.... and I'm bored... and... okay... let's face it - I want to gloat! :-D The show is a hot mess and even the recapper is pretty much throwing her hands in the air over the non-sensical plot that is the new writer's doing. And the ratings are keeping pace with the devolution into plot confusion. They should have left it alone. The ratings weren't all that bad in 8+% range. Now they're down in the 6s.

Or I could be branded the person with the bridge and 50 trolls underneath. Which would be far more accurate.

A troll is a person who tries to disrupt an intelligent conversation. So far, on that thread, I was the first person to comment and the only person who engaged in an intelligent commentary on the writer change. Everything else was a bunch of over the top reaction to my comment. So one intelligent commenter = me. 50 trolls = them.

0

Except KDramaAddict JCW. She delightfully tried to cross the bridge as well.

0

Often, I've seen a "troll" label attached someone who appears to want to get people riled up by posting mean, malicious, inaccurate, unhelpful, and etc. comments regardless of the intelligence quotient of the conversation.

Poster1: I don't understand this.
Poster2: You are an idiot.
Poster1: That is not helpful.
Poster2: Look it up somewhere, stupid.
Poster3: Poster2. That is uncalled for.
Then many people jump in.

Sometimes, it seems to be used interchangeably with "hater" like something about a celebrity.

Guess the difference whether the intent is discernible.

Even without a label, they can still ignore you.

0

Rightly or wrongly, with or without all the facts, when some people feel someone is being made a patsy, they feel compelled to defend that person. Feel first, think later. Pretty much how the brain works.

0

Okay.... are you actually trying to say that my original comment which was only an analysis of the writing and had no elements of pointedness toward any commenter at all, somehow counts as trolling because other people didn't share my opinion?

That, although most comment sections on DB contain a great deal of insightful and often critical analysis of Kdrama with pleasant discussion following, that a comment left on a comment section early (I believe I was the 2nd comment at all) a priori implies trolling if ipso facto the character of that comment section later becomes
hostile to critical analysis??

I realize that we live in a world of post-post-modern Orwellian double speak, but I would hope that the average beanie can tell the difference in intent between Kdrama fans who engage in a critical analysis/discussion of dramas and fanservice flash mobs who what to prevent it.

0

"Often, I’ve seen a “troll” label attached someone who appears to want to get people riled up by posting mean, malicious, inaccurate, unhelpful, and etc. comments regardless of the intelligence quotient of the conversation."

I agree. 50 trolls.

0

@Susan

Your original comment wasn't trolling. If I had your insights and passion for good entertainment, I would have probably offered a one or two major ways that I would do differently from the new writer, predicated on the fact that the new writer was tasked to help fix the drama because the old ways could not improve the ratings. It needs to at least get double digit and reach for 15%, not just hanging around 8%, if that were possible given the drama never truly caught on from the beginning.

Some people might still disagree but probably much less emotional just because they had to read and reason through your arguments. You also tend to lose some readers that way. The responses might be fewer but more intelligent.

0

Must be your mentioning of being 2nd. Totally unrelated to the discussion.

There used to be some kind of a race to be post the first comment. The person who posted first would literally just wrote something like "I'm first." and nothing else. Eventually, JB warned people not to do that.

0

Totally unrelated to the discussion. meant my subsequent paragraph.

0

@Susan

These things do blow over, sometimes rather quickly. I don't know you whether you were around during the fan war between Healer fans in one corner and Pinocchio & KMHM fans in the other. Something was simmering beneath the surface for some time then it exploded in the OT right after Healer ended. When the next OT came around, it was as if nothing had happened.

0

I was once stunned that because in our comments we judged if a show was good or not... and we (myself and a couple others) said it was bad, that commenters said "Thanks a lot for your lack of consideration and spoiling our fun." I questioned if they had a right to say that or if I was really at fault for being thoughtless. The same rebuke was levelled at Heads in the TTILY recaps, saying that the recaps should have been devoid of snark.

I have come to the conclusion that:
1)those commenters are self-centered and mistaken to think DB or we owe them a 'happy' reading experience other than that we do not insult them as persons.

2)Some people cannot differentiate analysis from hate/troll posts

3)The way an observation is worded may evoke a tone that sounds arrogant to some, when it was not meant to be, and so elicit emotional responses when it should have elicited thoughtful discussion.

I believe anyways that people contradict themselves because if they said the same thing, it would be ok but not if the same point was brought up by someone else at a different time when they had not thought of it yet. :D

0

@ Snickers

The good thing about our fast paced world of social media where comments come at all times on all topics and at all rates of speed, is that we do not bother to dwell too long on any one thing. There's so much going on, we prefer to move on and we know that after 2-4 days, hardly anyone goes back to a thread. It's easier to not bother to continue a war unless one is spoiling for continual fights.

So the blow over part is definitely faster if one does not bring up the same thing again or at least, in the same way... I believe I see the same points being made but without the emotional furor. It's a matter of timing and sometimes wording and on who's around to reply.

One of the BOF recaps, a poster questioned why must JB insert her own opinions instead of just telling what happened in the episode. Editorialized recap vs neutral, just-the-facts recap, I guess. JB responded saying this is her blog and she can do whatever expletive she wants ?

I not sure it's much better being 'still better than their least favorite shows' if they are mentioned all in the same breath LOL! ... it's like thinking of SWWTN made them think of the shows they hated most ... still down there with those shows ... not good.

It's a right hot mess. I just skimmed the new episode - it's all male action and no female character development. Remember how this used to be a female-centered drama?

If I owned that production company I would be kicking the *ss of the producer who brought on the new writer. Ratings are literally down an average of 12% since he came on board. That's pretty much the entire profit margin. So, it's a HUGE deal. Of course, if I did own that production company, I'd have paid a LOT more attention to who got hired. And if a mistake was made, I would have babysat the two writers after wobbly 11th and 12th episodes to reverse such a big ratings decline. It's too late now... Quel desastre!

0

@GB

My baseline is usually: "It could be worse." "I've seen worse." "We will see what happens." "This probably won't turn out well."

Almost never: "I hope I like it." "I'm going to like this!" "Can't wait!" "Worse than I expected."

They were not unaware of the criticisms. They might be simply reacting by listing even worse dramas. In other words, "Not the best I've seen but it's not as bad as people say." One poster admitted to not understanding why some people didn't like Heirs and would cut SWWTN fans some slack.

0

@Snickers

Yes I read that part ... about finally understanding how some people could not like Heirs, and letting people enjoy SWWTN eventhough he? didn't and I was laughing to myself. When I watched Heirs, I did so long after the hype was over and I never read the recaps or reviews. I was wondering why the show that was so hyped up left me cold. When I did finally read comments, I realised that I wasn't alone in thinking that it was nothing much.

I'm watching Cheo Yong Season 1 and noticed that more than once, the episodes start with a cold open or even a continuation, introducing something strange that requires follow-up.... but it does not get followed up.

I find that annoying. Why show it if that episode is not going to address it.... or are we supposed to watch to the end of the series in the hopes of getting the resolution.

Even more annoying... the start showed something ghostly that actually did not happen (false advertising) because in the end it was an accident and had nothing to do with a ghost. Why do shows do that? Human error? Bad editing? Just playing with the poor viewer's patience?

Thanks Susan. Yes, it could be based on the manga. The drama has 10 episodes in Season 1 and has Cheo Yong being aided by a female officer, Sun Woo, (whom he met when she was a high schooler) and by the ghost of Na Young who was Sun Woo's best friend in school and who has amnesia. From time to time, Na Young helps Cheo Yong too as many of the cases seem to deal with ghosts, and she may do so by possessing poor Sun Woo (who is pretty kickass herself). No mention of his powers coming from his granny.

Pretty decent dynamics between the 3 of them, cute because of course only Cheo Yong can see Na Young and like a typical kid, she's all over the place being enthusiastic or petulant and actually for a ghost, more full of life than anyone else. Oh Ji Eun as Sun Woo is good at flipping between being the adult cop and the high schooler when she is possessed.

I watch on Dramacool mostly. http://www.dramacool.com/

Oh dear, poor LollyPip on the Mrs Cop Ep 8 thread.... I feel for her. I'd be soooo upset.

"And the problem with giving us too many random details, for too long, is that without some solid connections and motivations you’re in danger of losing your audience. ... If there’s one thing ... that absolutely maddens me, it’s the tendency to introduce new people without any context or explanation and expect the audience to know what’s going on.
... And at this point, halfway through the drama, I’d much rather just be told who people are exactly, ... than to be eight episodes in and still wondering what major characters’ names even are. ..."

This is terrible. Her comments were filled with questions. Being inscrutable for too long is really being mean to the viewer who comes for a story. It reminds me of the silly green ping-pong ball story that is just out to annoy. I'd put this lack of clarity in a show 8 episodes in, on a rating lower than The Time I Loved You that made such a loooonng big issue of Won's secret that turned out to be inane. I'm so annoyed on LollyPip's behalf LOL!

Poor thing - she's got to recap the rest of that show!

Now that we've had two cycles of meh shows, I'm wondering why. I've not liked anything from start to finish lately: Mask, IRY, TTTILY, SWWTN, Yong Pal (sorry, it's gotten stupid over the last two eps), OMG, Divorce Lawyers in Love, Warm and Cozy, Producers ....

I guess there was My Love Eun Dong. And though I liked it, it was hardly popular.

I'm feeling rather disappointed with the choices right now...

Even shows with very good actors like Producers have been lackluster.

Any thoughts?

@ Susan
Let's say you are part of a group (Gp 1) of more discerning viewers. There are also rough groupings of viewers who really don't want to think much and just wish to be entertained (Gp 2). In the middle there are probably many other groups but I'd generally say we might group them into one group (Gp 3) who can be discerning some of the time, or when they wish to and who can be more forgiving of a show. Also, people move from group to group.

From what PD Jin Hyuk said in his interview, he is not entirely sure what will work with the audience, especially an international one. There also seems to be only so much control that PDs and writers and whoever else involved have. If the show is pandering to ratings and the 'wrong' audience's demands, which might be the case for many of the shows you mentioned, the more discerning Gp 1 will notice it faster.

I only know for I Remember You, the characters became 'softer' which was probably what many viewers (Gp 2 and 3) wanted. Without any obvious reason, it's true, but it was something that was wanted and so the question of why the characters changed, did not bother them. It bothered discerning viewers. At least the good thing about IRY was that the romance was little and not soppy and seemed sufficiently in keeping with the story line.

I have the general feeling that many productions are just pushed to come out with something quick, without regard to quality. This is what KDAddict was saying. There was no time or desire to have a properly written piece of work because the need to change and not merely tweak it to suit demands was going to be pandered to anyway. They want to cater more to Gp 2 and maybe Gp 3.

What possessed the productions to make writer changes or possessed the writer to change the storyline ... probably money was involved... too much PPL in Mask and TTILY. And that together with not enough preparation and so having to come up with something-anything, not knowing that their audience has become more sophisticated, and how we'd hate a meandering tale without payoff or continual back and forth as in TTILY and Warm and Cozy. Generally, a drop in the respect for Gp 1 audiences... my guess. :)

:-) What an interesting post.

You know, when it comes down to it - I also want pleasurable entertainment I don't have to think about. And I don't think about it until it starts changing utterly in some way. Then I can't help but notice.

Dear Kdrama producers

This is what I would like: Cantabile Tomorrow without the last episode being shot first. Hyde, Jekyll & Me with everything and everyone being replaced but Hyun Bin. My Secret Hotel with the first writer not having cancer adn being able to produce her whole show! Faith without weirdos with super powers. SWWTN with the first writer and me writing the structure of the whole plot (really - I"m quite good at structure - call me?). Two Weeks and 3 Days and City Hunter and Healer and My Love from the Star all over again. And Producer 2 - (only call me again about that structuring thing - I really can help!) And... what else? More shower scenes! Or bed scenes! After a lifetime of watching female skin in films I've decided to join the people who demand fanservice - it's time for lots of girl fanservice - let's see some abs! (And other cute parts...) And better parts for women in these shows.... and lots more of our favorite people.... and.... someone really needs to do something about the OSTs lately. What's up with that??!!

All my love,
Susan

I think HeadsNo2 has the worst luck among recappers. Although rare, a recapper can stop. There are a number of not fully recapped dramas in recaps page.

After a few kdramas under my belt, I came to the generalization that the light funny stuff (my preference) in the beginning tend to be pushed aside by heavy, emotional stuff with a lot of crying somewhere around the halfway mark. Luckily I am usually skeptical and don't expect much anyway. It is what it is. There are plenty of other things I could do instead. I chose this. My fault.

@Snickers

From somewhere way above...

"Not everything that is written gets shot or eventually makes it to the screen, right? I’ve heard writers complaining about this too. Who actually pick what stays and goes?"

In this order: The producer. The director. The editor. The producer.

The producer is the head honcho/a. While the set belongs to the director, a pre-shoot meeting with the producer can affect direction.

Next, the director makes the call on what gets shot. If the it isn't shot, it isn't making the edit.

Even if it is shot, the editor might make it go bye bye.

If it doesn't make the edit, the producer won't worry about cutting it out. The opposite could happen though - imagine a product placement was paid for by a sponsor and it didn't get shot or got edited out - well then everything works in rewind...... and it gets shot afterward and inserted. Btw - coming back and shooting later = expensive. This should always be avoided if at all possible.

Cutting too much. Cutting too little. Cutting and piecing together in wrong places. Things rearranged in ways that differed from what the writer had intended.

How much can a piece of great writing be reshaped/rearranged after shooting by producers, directors and editors while still maintaining its integrity? I ask because I've also read comments that "the source material was so good that the movie/show just made itself."

This is the stuff I also really wanted to know. Thanks for asking, @Snickers and thanks for the behind the scenes info, Susan.

I have mentioned before that I wondered how so many people could juggle so many different parts of a production and not end up doing something that was out of sync with the rest. So much that could go wrong. Yet we get new shows all the time like it's a piece of cake.

Susan said that in the end it all just comes together. Maybe the reason we find so much to complain about is that there are actually more shows now that do not come together but only got themselves done because they were being aired and there was no going back.

Out-of-sync happens when a production team doesn't stay on top of output. That's the same for any company, uni research team, kid's sports team, etc.

All endeavors are the same - a bunch of stuff happens, sometimes it's organized well, sometimes poorly, and when a deadline comes it either gets presented in what ever form it's in or someone makes the call and says "Sorry, we can't deliver."

There's someone called a Line Producer in films. This person basically is in charge of every line item of the production budget. They organize and track everything from which crew is on which set all the way down to lunch. Production offices are these little hives of 'accounting' activity. Only instead of accounting, they are making sure forms are filed with the right unions, that hotel rooms were booked for a location shoot, that the contract with the stunt double is completed. And on and on and on....

Film sets are highly highly organized (and disorganized) endeavors. All those people you see in a 'making of' - 1/3 of them have organizational roles - assistant directors, production assistants, assistants to the principal actors, etc etc. Let's say you're an actor arriving on set ....

I'm gonna finish this a bit later....

But they are not "yelling" at you anymore. People often go to other sites such as Soompi and there are usually commenting on streaming sites. AsianWiki shows ratings in each drama's page. I'm sure you weren't the only one who brought up ratings.

Healer AGB Seoul ratings were ≥10% only 4 times. Non-Healer fans used that as proof that Healer wasn't as good as its competitors in the same time slot and doubted its international popularity. Many Healer fans reacted similar to SWWTN fans. IRY's ratings were never in the top 20. @GB can probably tell us whether that was brought up and how fans reacted.

it has abandoned its tight plotting structure. This might come back to bite it in teh *ss.

In fact, it looks like it already is. There's grumbling amongst the aud. They miss the fast pace.

The risk YP always had was a lack of character dev. Which doesn't have to be a problem as long as the tight plotting doesn't falter. One the plotting falters, then the audience begins to notice the character dev. When there isn't enough dev, the audience will begin to imagine it. Take a look at the YP thread - that's going on wholesale over there. That's all fine and dandy, but what's going to happen when the drama doesn't match the audience's made up expectations? Disappointment! And it's easy to hate what you once loved....

I'm kind of wondering what YP is up to. It's really odd that they took a winning formula and jettisoned it suddenly.

Any thoughts on their strategy?

Any thoughts on their strategy?

This question is not for me, right?

0

Either @Snickers or @GB or any lurkers who might be there... I'm curious what you think. I like learning more than sharing! :-)

0

@Susan... Yong Pal strategy???

It's like "Here we've got good ratings, it's going swimmingly, we got the action out, we've let loose all our characters, ok now... let's surprise everyone by taking it all back. And then we'll see if the ratings stay the same" You mean this kind of strategy? ... LOL! Super risky. As you say, it's hard to get back viewers and it's Episode 7-8, pretty late to be changing strategy.

1) If it is deliberate it's the false calm before the storm. Another set up before throwing more camp and weird at us or hopefully some plot from where it left off.

2) If it is not deliberate, then something happened to their main writer and Junior is asked to hold the fort

or my fave

3) The live shoot kicked in too soon, they're all exhausted and needed a couple of episodes to rest. They hope that giving us sweet scenes of people getting on and approving the romance would do the trick to tide them over. :)

0

@ Snickers?
A quick look at IRY last ep recap shows around 20 references to ratings. The cry was that it was a good show and a pity the ratings were so low. Some wanted a Season 2 of IRY, but felt that the ratings would never justify it. :) Same old, same old... but I personally really did like IRY... redemption arc of psychopaths was extremely interesting. ?

The ratings were probably low for IRY bc of the arc in the first half. I liked the cerebralness - but it may not have appealed to other Kdrama fans. Yeah, I noticed the same thing. What is really gross is how this little band of bullies has basically taken over the entire comment section. In eps 1 -10 there was a big robust commenting community over there. I will say that it was more robust at the beginning than the end.... But anyway, this little group of bullies seems to be answering everything all over the comment section in an effort to control the direction of the discussion. Especially noticeable is the ringleader's imprint - she's marking territory quite noticeably.

One of the bullies is also on teh YP thread. He/she butted into a discussion thread you're in to 'defend' YP. It was a completely tone deaf attempt that demonstrated a lack of understanding of the original comment. I'll let you figure out which one! :-)

One answer was Healer has ruined you for all the subsequent dramas. You will watch them but you don't expect them to make you feel the way Healer does.

Another was you lost interest in any new drama.

0

I really enjoyed healer. I rewatched quite a few episodes. And I never commented. There was nothing to comment on. It was perfect. Beautifully executed.

I'm not sure if it ruined my life though - it just made me happy to see the type of quality I hope grows in Kdramas.

All this Kdrama watching has made me think about writing a script for this format. I think I have someone in mind for a writing partner as well. The question is who we should develop it for.

0

@ Susan and Snickers

Yup, that summarises being ruined by Healer. It set the bar high and now I want shows to hit that bar or surpass it. Ruined because I cannot find that drama... ruined by unfair expectations? More easily disappointed ... and this from a person like me who used to watch without thinking or analysing much.... now I cannot stop thinking, "Is this good? Why?" LOL.

I'm not as bad as some others who've mentioned this,... but at one time it was an obsession and I could watch no other show while I watched it. I know some still say that they cannot watch much else and still return to Healer. At least I'm moving along and looking for another show. So some are definitely still 'ruined'.

0

Dear me.... Yong Pal... 1 episode plus of nothing much. Where's the action? Where's the progress in the plot or how about more planning on what should happen next. We seem to be privy to many long, long conversations. But one conversation that is conspicuous by its absence is one between TH and his sister. Surely if he can move around, he should have gone to see her.

In IRY, with the way scenes followed on each other and built upon what was shown before, I felt confident that the producer had a clear idea of where everything was heading and that he was leading us there appropriately. With Yong Pal, I feel the opposite.

It's good that the people and hints he introduced did not get left by the wayside (yet) but to what purpose is showing us that the police are still after Yong Pal and had to give up or that the hospital staff are impressed with TH's popularity despite themselves? The editing is still strange and now there seems to be little editing when a lot more could help. But I'm wondering if they've run out of story to show us ? and this is just filler while they scramble to come up with the next few plot points. ?

I agree with this for the writing of shows like TTILY and My Secret Hotel which held back info to increase suspense or add conflict but to no avail because the info was inadequate to justify the waste of time.

I can't say that the same thing is happening in YP, only that suddenly there's no story to tell, nothing happened to show that we are going to strike off on a new path or how we are going to proceed. The only saver for the romantic viewer is that it settles a long time on the OTP and ends with a kiss. I guess that is supposed to save this episode LOL!

I beleive producers/channels are eventually moving away from the live shoot system. Some shows like descendants of the sun are supposed to be 100% pre produced and others like last had 8 episodes already written at the time of the shoot. I read this in an article perhaps on soompi or kpop herald(dont really remember where i read it, otherwise i would have posted the link). So there is a high chance that in the future most kdramas would be pre produced because the cast & crew seems to be pretty comfortable working that way.
I think there should be no issue in shows being pre produced in the mystery/thriller/action genre becuase they usually dont have any second leads. The audiences' reaction can only cause problems when there are second leads and people end up making their own OTP which may be not be in accordance to what the writer has writer so I guess the problem can only arise in rom coms mostly. Otherwise they should seriously consider live shoots.

Well after reading the article i realized that second leads and OTP are not the only thing that matters lol :P but if writers and producers are given enough time to make the show than shouldnt they be able to make a good show that will also satisfy the audience anyway and there would be no need to make the changes in the script halfway.

The acting was just mediocre, I agree but I didnt find the story that bad, though its been many years since ive seen it and at that time shows for me used to be just for entertainment. I am just intrigued if you like/dislike it what are your reasons? I guess it was also my first kdrama so ill always be a little partial for no reason.

Full of air and fairy dust and cotton candy. Four rich and handsome young men like a plucky and poor and average looking young woman. I enjoyed BOF the same way I enjoy cotton candy at the fair. It's fun and lovely and silly and whatever. No food critic would bother critiquing cotton candy. Why should they? It's an occasional treat. Enjoy!

I don't know... I just finished watching the interviews with that PD and then I popped down to the comments. The same nasty bullies were out in full force there as well.

I hope they move on, but they have a series possibility of ruining the commenting on DB. Serious commenters don't engage them. If it's one or two people bullying, it's not a problem, but when they swarm under every well thought out comment, it's hard for a conversation between more thoughtful beanies to start.

Well then it's up to intrepid thoughtful beanies to just ignore them and continue with the conversation as it should go.

I'm not entirely sure if it's as deliberate as all that. If they do not take 'instruction' or become offensive, I will not engage them. But if it is deliberate, then rather than let them change the flow, I'd want to keep the discussion on track with specific mature individuals, assuming there's actually more to be said.

I do fear though that they are driving more reasoned individuals off the comment sections. I notice that when they show up that intelligent conversations begin to disappear.

Skirmishes (arguments) unrelated to dramas also happen here on occasion. Will all blow over quickly.

"hate-watching" and "rename the show that disappoints you"

hate-watching vs spite-watching?

@Snickers?

Would that hate-watching = watching what we hate, just because... or watching although we hate it... or watching in order to find fault with it?

Then hate-watching is not equal to spite-watching?

Susan, some time back you were asking about the shows we thought were the worst... our OT commenters have listed more shows in OT #410 in response to my Comment 8, in case you have not visited there yet. :) Fun to see what others have hated. I was hoping to see something I liked in that list... maybe just 1 show qualified. It's interesting to read why others hated a show I liked. :)

I would like to start a thread - maybe on OT 411 on shows that you thought you'd love and then something about them was so bad that you ended up hating them.

For me that's My Secret Hotel, Liar Game and Angry Mom.

I noticed that I'm not the only person who was really disappointed with Liar Game. John G gave it a 4.5 - he's a writer so I imagine he had many of the same issues I did.

Because this OT is 2 weeks old, new visitors are very likely few and far in between. You'll get a greater number of responses if you post in a new OT. JB opens OT around 11AM Pacific Daylight Time every Friday. Many international (non-U.S.) posters jump in right then. Visitor count drops quickly within a day and half.

Sorry to be of absolute no help in this matter. Because I'm often an outlier, I usually don't recommend anything, not shows, products... Unless I know the exact needs.

From above:

"

@Susan… Yong Pal strategy???

It’s like “Here we’ve got good ratings, it’s going swimmingly, we got the action out, we’ve let loose all our characters, ok now… let’s surprise everyone by taking it all back. And then we’ll see if the ratings stay the same” You mean this kind of strategy? … LOL! Super risky. As you say, it’s hard to get back viewers and it’s Episode 7-8, pretty late to be changing strategy.

1) If it is deliberate it’s the false calm before the storm. Another set up before throwing more camp and weird at us or hopefully some plot from where it left off.

2) If it is not deliberate, then something happened to their main writer and Junior is asked to hold the fort

or my fave

3) The live shoot kicked in too soon, they’re all exhausted and needed a couple of episodes to rest. They hope that giving us sweet scenes of people getting on and approving the romance would do the trick to tide them over. :)"

So, I actually did wonder if maybe the head writer had appendicitis or something... something where they had a BIG problem..... and as you say Junior had to take over. Only nobody trusted Junior to do much... so they played with bed scenes and music.... and the world's longest non-dinner party....

Also from above....

"I’ve read comments about bad or weird editing:

Cutting too much. Cutting too little. Cutting and piecing together in wrong places. Things rearranged in ways that differed from what the writer had intended.

How much can a piece of great writing be reshaped/rearranged after shooting by producers, directors and editors while still maintaining its integrity? I ask because I’ve also read comments that “the source material was so good that the movie/show just made itself.” "

The writer constructs the verbal portion of the story. The director constructs the visual portion of the story. So, in some sense, there's no such thing as ignoring the writer's vision. The writer's concept is interpreted by the director, who takes this base and adds a visual concept to the storytelling, by the actors who create missing backstories for teh characters, and by the editor who creates a coherent line of moving images and dialogue for the audience to follow and understand all of these visions coming together.

Films and shows and theatre productions are all group efforts. All of teh little pieces and parts reflect a myriad of people's visions about the overall concept.

Great writing... great in terms of prose? Great in terms of plot? Great in terms of character growth? Or great bc it lays out a solid script that is easy for everyone to work with and make a good product (Healer)?

Shakespeare is great writing. But it can make for some gd awful movies. Other than Kenneth Brannaugh, have you ever seen a director take the original language and make a film you absolutely loved? Mostly we like films based on Shakespeare that are modern interpretations. The writing is much less 'great' but better for a solid script that ends up being a good product.

None of the writing in Healer was brilliant. What is was is well-crafted. As was the directing, sets, costumes, acting, music, cinematography, etc etc etc. Some producer on that show was smart enough to put together a lot of incredibly competent people who work well as a team. That's why it was popular. Bc it was pleasant and solidly crafted. It's also why some people didn't like it - it didn't 'swing for the fences' - there was no particularly amazing anything about it - no breathtaking fight scene, no startling clever lines, no romantic scene that made you weak in the knees.... People who want 'go big or go home' never got big with Healer. And so they didn't understand teh hype. People who want a solid piece of enjoyable drama without any glaring problems - they loved Healer.

Did you know we made "Healer KDrama Awards" poll to celebrate JCW's birthday?

The idea came rather late. After some discussions, we finished it in less than 8 days. I took it down at the end of July.

The rules are simple:
1. You can vote as often as you want.
2. No category is required. Vote for whatever category you want.
3. No "All of the Above". Actually, one category had it. (My rule: No easy choices!)

The ladies advertised in various places outside of DB.

Hi Susan

Healer - ..."no romantic scene that made you weak in the knees" That's interesting. The part that I felt was done well overall was the romance. The 'confessing' scene with the 2 head nods was pretty knee-weakening. The others that come to mind were the 'snow kiss' and the first 9 minutes of episode 15 (I prefer the 6:20 minutes scene).

I thought about this after I made my comment. The romantic scenes were particularly special. Maybe this was a huge factor in creating such a loyal audience? Really good romance is pretty rare (despite the number of romantic dramas) in Kdramaland.

I got to thinking about what romantic scenes over the years have made me weak in the knees.... for me it's always when both people don't want to kiss but just can't help it! When the attraction overwhelms all their prickly personality issues and pride. To be fair, I haven't seen one of those scenarios in a very long time.

My favorite kisses in Kdramaland: Pinocchio in the snow, My Love from the Star on the steps, Queen InHyun's Man at the theater, all of them in The Return of Iljimae, all of them in Secret Love Affair...

My favorite romantic lead so far has been Jung Kyoung-Ho playing Kang Min-Ho in Fall Love with Soon Jung.

I really really enjoyed Healer, but there aren't any kiss scenes I want to go back and watch. What I want to go back and watch are all the Bong Sookie scenes and the couple on the rooftop scenes and my absolute favorite scene - the one where he shows up in the coffee shop to fight the baddies. Ha! That was kinda amazing - yep - you thought I was Bong Sookie - but I'm really a badass!!

Still of the few I enjoyed or at least recall with some fondness ...
Movie: My Sassy Girl (a younger Gianna Jun) there are more but I can't remember...

Dramas: A Gentleman's Dignity, Marriage Not Dating, Trot Lovers, Queen In Hyun's Man, Coffee Prince ... there are more but I hesitate to recommend them for various reasons.

Or just go for We Got Married which is the romance and comedy without the angst :)

@KoreanDrama
We Got Married is a reality program where 2 celebrities are to date and have a fake marriage with cameras rolling. They are usually more their natural selves although a lot of the set ups are contrived. We get to hear what the hosts of the show have to say about the couple(s) and what each individual in the couple say about what they felt and thought, etc.

Basically WGM gives just the OTP moments without 2nd leads and tropes, just celebrities acting like real people while being mindful that they are being filmed.

The Devil Wears Prada
Shakespeare in Love
Emma
The Wedding Planner
Bridget Jones' Diary
Four Weddings and a Funeral

Less light, but still very enjoyable:

The Tourist (both the French and American versions)
Tomb Raider
Indiana Jones
Star Wars
Twister
The Italian Job
Ocean's 11

And things that are dark but that I believe you should absolutely watch:

The Dragon Tattoo trilogy (Swedish version - skip the American version)

Kill Bill (both parts)

The Matrix

Kundo Age of the Rampant

Sherlock Holmes (the BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch)

Things that are less dark that I also think you should watch:

La Vie en Rose (with Marion Clotillard)

Anime

Every single Miyao Hayazki film. I would start with Porco Rosso and My Friend Totoro.

Clannad (you'll understand after you get about halfway in) and Clannad After Story

Samurai Champloo

Eden of the East

Inuyasha

It's pretty much what I said about viewers creating their own expectations when the show doesn't do character dev - now everyone's horribly disappointed when side characters the loved are off the show, the leads went in an unexpected direction, and the plotting slowed.

Betrayal! And so they're dropping the show. Cautionary tale.

As for skincare, when I watched Roommate Season 1, there were more than a few scenes of our celebrities creaming themselves and pinning their ears (for circulation???) etc, etc.... guys and girls both.

There's BB Creams and CC Creams. The good ones can start off on the skin as one colour but becomes more translucent or reflective of the owner's own skin tone when it is spread on and warms up... or something like that... anyway, it looks more natural later on after application. The Japanese brands can be sooooo expensive.

Yes. It's a common trivia.

Even producers are under that sort of pressure? Or is it more because "Do as Romans do"? Romans = actors & actresses

I've just been back to the I Remember You thread and it's still growing. I did not realise that. It's sweet to see that a few find that it feels like home. Just the way we feel here and on the Healer thread.

For all that IRY may have its flaws, it definitely had that in-depth factor that has led to so much discussion on the characters, on motives and the feeling that we know and understand those 'people'. Nice, well realised characters and a growth arc that satisfied many. It's strange that we can miss those psychopaths the way we do! LOL!

As for Gaksital, as usual, I'll give it a bit more of a chance. I want to see why quite a number of the people in the Healer group liked it and thought it good. I find the actors are over-acting a bit, just as the sets are a bit over the top, however it is energetic and full of action with a breathless pace. By Episode 2 we already get some backstories and more understanding of motives. I want to see how Joo Won becomes Gaksital (although I already know enough spoilers to know why he did).

Will be back later!

Yes, I watched Coffee Prince. That was at a time I was not seriously analysing anything. I may have just felt it was funny and parts of it were romantic but I didn't like Han Kyul (Gong Yoo's character... although I find Gong Yoo himself good) all that much. I did like Yoon Eun Hye as Eun Chan. I read that it was extended also... no wonder I do not care for the ending episodes so much. It lost steam and just frustrated. Anyway, unlike Healer, it has not inspired me to re-watch it. :)

Now, you know what I think about people getting upset with a show that doesn't go in the direction they expect bc the show didn't bother to do enough character dev for the aud to roll with the punches. I'm wondering if SS will either A) satisfy enough commenters to keep them watching even as teh show falters, or B) create huge expectations in a large chorus of watches that will later be dashed when the writer goes in direction that SS didn't expect.

Susan, yes, how can one not notice SS (let's say she's a she). She's amazing in her picking up of every possible clue, meticulously, and seeing in them the conclusions/answers to many questions... not all answers ... as she admits some things she does not know. I cannot fault her as I've done the same myself, only now I'm more careful about creating my own expectations.

I guess, she really needs for the show to make sense in every way and cannot abide a query that cannot be answered. However, I find the tone abrasive, so I'm not playing. Sometimes I do play. It's fun to conjecture and concoct our own story based on bare minimum clues.

The pity is that, it's not likely the idea that a show has not given enough to go on, will be well received. Human beings seem to need to defend what they like and willfully blind themselves to it's flaws.

It will be quite a pity if things don't go as expected and we see the 'disappointment fallout' in the comments. It is interesting to be half and observer and analyser of the comments rather than just of the show for a change LOL! I will stick around for this. :) Plus...

... At the moment other commenters are happy to have their questions 'answered', so I guess they'll watch. I don't mind watching out of curiosity, if for no other reason. But I also mentioned that I'd watch to see if the Production Team can salvage what they have and have the show fulfill the potential that we envisioned it had.

You know, you put it perfectly - her tone is abrasive and so I don't play. It's almost as if it's personal for her - like she's defending the show.

I have definitely gotten into lengthy discussions with other people about possible motivations for characters - I quite like doing it. But with her, it seems like it would be more of an argument than a discussion since I can't just accept her ideas about what's happening at face value.

Every time I read anyone's comment where they say Character A feels this and Charter B feels that - I'm pretty much out. Projecting our opinions into assumptions about the motivations and feelings real people is pretty bad. Projecting them onto a fictional characters is beyond ridiculous. First of all, a character is an amalgam of the writer's, director's, and actor's interpretation. When actors talk about how a character they play might react to or think about something, they say, "I think she would feel like xxx. She had a lot of yyy in her past and ..." Fans, on the other hand, say this like "Josie really loooooves the Pussycats. She has secret lesbian fantasies about them and that's why the dynamic of the band is so awkward at times." Some random thought that popped into the fan's head while watching becomes Statement. Then Fact.

Meh.... I can't be bothered to play when the comments are like that. It isn't interesting.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's fun to take a meta approach to the discussion - to pop on the thread and discuss and then come over here and discuss the response. I often feel that I can't discuss freely in a comment section bc of the cheerleader swarm. Bzzzz bzzzzt.

Btw, "I will stick around for this. :)" Why, were you leaving?

@ Susan
"I have definitely gotten into lengthy discussions with other people about possible motivations for characters – I quite like doing it."

I remember this when I first read you on Liar Game... were you also commenting before that show?

I remember how your statement that Kim So Eun's character in Liar Game was 'not kind' was a spark that set off a whole bunch of comments begging to differ and trying to change your mind LOL! I was intrigued by that sub-thread on kindness and how it was to be defined, how you felt that her character did not 'show' kindness.

I believe you were making the same point there as here, that the viewers were imputing something they wished to see in the character as the 'truth' about that character. It's a human trait. It's how we 'communicate' by reading the 'signs' in a way so that we can respond. What you are trying to say with the lack of character development is that the signs are not actually there (as in fully fleshed out in the writing) or that they have only have been the expressions of a good actor who is able to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. This makes the job of show makers easy and hard... viewers take the insufficient clues and run with them into expectations, forgiving the show everything if it pans out the way they want... but the same viewers can at the same time be the most belligerent of critics if the show does not meet those expectations.

Hahahahaha! Yeah, I didn't comment for a long time after that. It was one of the more frustrating conversations I've been in.

Everything I was saying would have been perfectly obvious to an actor, director or producer. I've never felt a Kdrama insulted my intelligence more. But the fans - they were impervious to logic. And, at some point, I just felt they were arguing for the sake of 'being right'.

I've had more fruitful discussions with my 7 year old niece. And trust me, she can be pretty impervious to logic as well.

Don't get me wrong - I am thrilled when someone has another opinion - I love it when someone points out to me the fallacies in my logic or presents viewpoints that I hadn't considered. But "I think the characters are fully developed and interesting and very smart and the plot is amazing and therefore you're wrong" and "I think the writers and actors and director are doing all of these things on purpose so that the audience can fill in the details bc I like to do that as a fan" are not very strong arguments. Especially when I'm going point by point and demonstrating the contrary.

Hi Susan
" 'I will stick around for this. :)' Why, were you leaving?"

Nope, time willing, I'll be staying to watch and read. I was making a statement about why I would hang around ... it is especially because of such comments as those strewn all over the thread. If it doesn't go the way as those who are agreeing with the commenter expect, I want to read their responses. :)

Susan,
If you want to tell if she will engage or not, ask your rhetorical question in the next recap thread. (Make sure it's rhetorical LOL!) See if inspite of the fact that no answer is required, you get answers, and from whom. :D

Or make a statement like I did, that just sounds wrong to her.

0

@Susan

??? Regarding your and @GB's discussions in 131 and 132. As a producer, do you want fans for the projects you produce such as the poster of concern?

Shows and celebrities can't choose their die-hard fans. If they could choose...

0

@Snickers

As a producer I want loads of fans. I want them in every stripe. On the other hand, they are a double edged sword. If you've got a franchise, fans can significantly impact the production.

But, yeah, I'll sign up SS as the chief fan of our new project if she can bring a large and happy market with her! :-)

0

I wonder whether kdramas employ seeds or influencers (to use your word).

0

Influencers are people with big social media accounts or other platforms. Usually they are famous people. Sometimes they are bloggers. This is a term used for marketing.

Seeds is a different thing. I've not heard that term, but I think you're imagining people who affect the fan reaction to shows. I've never heard of anyone hiring anyone to do this, but I've been on the receiving end of someone trying to steer a conversation where I thought - why would you care? Are you being paid?

0

"If it doesn’t go the way as those who are agreeing with the commenter expect, I want to read their responses. :) "

I wonder if that will result in them calling her out or just agreeing to a moving target of assumptions.

I've been pretty un-dramatic too... however addiction is addiction and it peaked during Healer... I found excuses to stay home either as my day off or to work from home, and basically holed up with the computer any time I wasn't needed for family stuff. As I mentioned before, the addiction was not to watching the show only, but watching in conjunction with commenting on DB... So I would watch the same episode multiple times, live streamed, raw, subbed, read recaps, comment, comment, comment. And as I was the one trying to get the unwieldy thread a little organised so that we could get some topics grouped, I prepared the threads/sub-threads in advance to be posted. Took hours (days of my life)!

I managed it without incident where work was concerned, although I raised eyebrows and questions with spouse and the children (being teenagers and more self-absorbed) just took it in their stride that their normally crazy mother was more crazy and more out of their hair than usual.

I took a breather when Healer ended and I do repeatedly try to cut back. However DB's siren call is hard to resist... more so than the new dramas, although I am constantly on the watch to find an equivalent to Healer.

@GB

When you were organizing Healer threads, I was kind amazed and perplexed at your attempt to bring order to chaos. Were you the one who spearheaded the drive to beat King of Two Hearts comment count? That was such a nutty time.

0

Hi @ Snickers?

I cannot recall how it started, just that the number of comments was so many that repeats of thoughts/ideas were found.... yeah I read practically everything in those hundreds and later thousands of comments (crazy woman!) so I knew that what so-and-so said here.... another so-and-so had also said there and answered the question etc.

There were also things we wanted to do like find each other by location, later on it was to order the DVD/Blu Ray, express our love for Healer and appreciation to the Production Team .... etc plus fun bits that I wanted to compile. So I started sub-threads with headings hoping that people would notice the all in Upper Case Headings and post more or less in the same sub-thread. As expected it only worked to a certain extent ... at least there were people who waited to see the heading in order to post....so cute having that cooperation. It was so much fun being a community ... that's where the addiction lies.

The surprise at our comment count was a remark made several times by others first and the comparison was made with other DB recaps... so the game began to see if we could beat the highest comment count (on DB ie K2H's) but with comments that were not just a waste of space. We tried our best to keep the posts relevant and not just squees, especially since JB informed that she was getting an email for every post LOL! It was exhilarating and so much fun doing the countdown (just to add more tension). So many people wanted to play, so it was great. All it needed was someone to suggest something, and there'd be enough folks on board to make it work.

I remember telling my husband that I started something on the DB Healer thread and was busy following through. He just gave me that look... yeah the crazy wife is at it again... and basically left me to it as long as I did not entirely forget that I have family and work.

I'm amazed that we've continued on the Healer thread as long as we have. I did not go back to it for 3 months or so until I saw that the group had asked for Healer Lovers to come back and say Hi to folks there who were still encamped. I truly appreciate the Healer Community for continuing in the spirit in which we started. It's always been warm and welcoming. Like others have said on other threads... being on DB is like coming home. For me, it's like a haven... can't seem to go a day without it, several times a day!!! :)

0

@GB

Daebak!!!!!!! :-) I had no idea that you had turned into a super fan. That's amazing!

LOL. :-) Wow. Great husband and kids you have!

It's so weird that I never read any of the Healer comments. I just had nothing to say - it was all great and there wasn't anything for me to add to a chorus of other people who had noted the same.

0

@GB

Did you participate in the Healer International Fan Project? You weren't the one who made your husband reenact one of the hand-hold scene, were you?

How about the Singapore Healer fan group watch? Like you said, so so many comments. I only remember the "unusual" or funny stuff.

0

The Singapore part of the Healer International Fans Project... yes, I was helping to spearhead that. We seemed to have the people and one of them in particular had the talent to edit video footage and she had all the ideas too... (a director in the making?). We met up and used my place as the set and had a ball of a time. These were the kids that chalked up 1000+ comments a day. I had to exit that group and have lost touch with them, but I still have their numbers and emails.

0

Oh, the husband hand porn scene... that was one of the kids who was the only married one besides me. She roped in her very easy-going husband and we shot that hand hold like 30 times to get it to look closer to the original or at least not too weird. That was 'tough' and hilarious in retrospect. It turned out ok. :) Now we know how hard it is to get the right angle and lighting and stuff.

0

Singapore Healer fan group - for all I know, they may still be going strong. They are a mixture of students and young adults starting work or with jobs. With needing to study overseas etc, I'm not sure if they managed to keep up.

I believe we might have had 10 or more persons joining in and I know for a fact that they met up at least twice more after we did the fans project. They did a Healer last episode watch together but I was sick and did not join them. They had heaps of ideas of what to do together, where to go, etc. Fun bunch.

0

I KNEW you were in deeper than your 134.1.1.1 post would let us believe ?

@ Snickers?

This thing about being understanding... if it is to be understanding about posting comments, then I think that's pretty much covered everywhere. Every commute, meal, walking along the street shows people on their smart phones and probably posting as well as reading/playing.

In this group of kids (19-28 year olds are kids to me), who got together on Whatsapp because of their love for Healer and JCW, they themselves remarked how their friends were confounded that all day, everyday, they'd be commenting on the Whatsapp group to each other. I know at one time, to my total shock/horror... my phone showed over 1,000 messages within 8 hours and at that time, there were just 4-5 active girls in the group!!! They actually said that their friends could not understand why they could not put down their phones, why during meals and outings they had to reply as soon as a post came in and when the friends/family asked... so how well do you know these people that you're messaging them all day? They were speechless when told that the group was made of up strangers who had not even met each other or seen each other only once and who had only joined the group because of a kdrama. LOL! Ahh the addiction of posting and replying to posts.

I pretty much worked some of the days and binged watched at night and only Healer. I don't think my colleagues would have cared or understood. As for the field I'm in... it's libraries and library applications in particular... so no, not likely to get understanding there either. LOL!

0

Oooh! I think if people realized how much manga, anime, Kdrama, etc I have watched that they would write Otaku in permanent marker all over me. Actually, I research everything all the time, so people pretty much expect me to be able to have insta insights - maybe they wouldn't even bat an eyelash!

0

Hi Susan,
In your line of work, I expect you to binge watch... it's your solemn duty!!! LOL.

Researching everything... whoa... that's a LOT of research. I can barely just keep up with some of DB and I go nowhere else on a regular basis. Reading comments on DB does get me doing research too actually... nothing too cerebral, just on the layman's easy to read level. But the time just goes whoosh and it's like I binged on the PC just like that. :)

0

LOL! I have a shocking level of knowledge on a wide range of topics. It's pretty hilarious. My favorite thing to do is learn and analyze. Which you can probably tell from my comments.

It's seriously cutting into my adventure time lately. I really really want to take a break and have some fun soon. Best idea for a vacation: surfing, seafood, a hammock, some music, amazing company and a journey to get there.

0

Did you see this on DB?

What do you mean by "I’m actually close to the fence because of Shin Mi Na." Close to which fence? The romance fence? Because you don't like Shin Min Ah or because you do?

I'm neutral about both Shin Min Ah and So Ji Sub. I found SMA OK in the gumiho drama, didn't care for her in A Love to Kill (I did not get that whole story), liked her in Arang.

Not too sure about SJS. He did not strike me as showing much of a different character but then, I only really, really watched 1 show with him in it ie Master's Sun. The other shows I just skimmed or ignored.

I took a peak at it last night ... it only played on YouTube and very 'sporadically' if I can use that term, so I went to sleep early. Best decision I made! :D

Ah so, big networks make big boo-boos too, although I guess that was decades ago and nothing similar has happened since. Heidi Bowl was a wake-up call.

Did you follow the link? Basically there was an action packed football game and just as it was really getting exciting, the broadcast station cut to a movie about a young girl and her grandfather living peacefully on a mountain in Switzerland. Because all the football fans felt cheated by having action replaced by 'Heidi', that broadcast became jokingly known as the Heidi Bowl.

In an amusing parallel to DB, about half of the people watching were upset when the action filled football disappeared while the other half vociferously defended why having Heidi was better.

So...

In the beginning, vast majority of the audience was enjoying the "football game." Suddenly, it became "Heidi." Half of the audience was fine with it while the other half was not.

What are the odds of picking up more Heidi viewers than losing football fans? We'll see how the ratings go this week.

Another cautionary tale in the making?

It doesn't matter. YP is just downright silly now. I know how they solved the problem of the 4 ep extension though!!

I decided to FFD the raw Yong Pal. First impressions without understanding much and anyway I hardly listened. *** SPOILERS***

Stream of consciousness thoughts as I watch....

1) Talking in one spot or so about 5 minutes of outside church scene with another 3 minutes of inside church scene does not bode well for an action show.

2) What does it say that I prefer watching the (to me yuckyy/gory) scalpel cutting scenes to the egg slicing by Yong Pal?

3) Chief Lee's paranoia that he could be offed like nurse Hwang rises. Which raises the plot hole ... why did nurse Hwang use a payphone in which she could get smashed in? And how would the baddies know exactly which pay phone she'd use and have a truck ready. *sigh*

4) Yipes!! cheesy couple stuff... FFD FFD.The purpose of introducing kids ... will it come to light?

5) I like Chae Young. Her house is the same as the one in Mask???

6) Oh dear, more cute moments, but now we have kids.

7) Finally some kiddy back stories. And yet again more fun times playing in the water. Ah, then quiet times in the forest? And the de rigeuer piggy back ride.

8) Now more kiddy back stories from the Yong Pal side... they got themselves a whole bunch of kids to act. I should have set my stop watch to see how many minutes of these 'idyllic' scenes we have.

9) Hmm so why does Dir get offed? New watchdog around. Chief Lee panics.

10) More idyllic scenes. I really should time them.

11) Finally get a Yong Pal moment of surgery? And they have to go to the hospital... but why does it have to be Hanshin Hospital again?

So no sign of Doo Chul, or police and still no sign of sister. Seems like the show has remained off the tracks and is concentrating on the romance and a bit of the intrigue by Do Joon.

12) One glimpse of Nurse Ahjumma.

Maybe my memory/impression is false. I remember Heidi, the book, being a bit dark. Movies, miniseries, and cartoons usually made it lighter and happier for the young audience. The few "foreign" movies from the 60's I watched seemed to be either screwball comedy-type or depressing.

1) Has the sister already left for her treatment in the States?

2) If so, who is setting up said treatment? Cynthia was organizing all this, but when he didn't keep the bargain, he lost all her organization. So how was it all arranged?

3) If not, and the sister is still in Seoul, doesn't TY worry that she'll be used as a threat against him?

I watched Yong Pal Ep 9 with the subs...

1) Sister is still in Korea. He said towards the end that he would return to Yeo Jin after he sent his sister to the States.

2) It sounds like the treatment might still be from Han Do Joon. Cynthia was working with Go and not Han.

3) Yes, the precarious position of his sister might finally be addressed in the Ep 10 (guessing from the preview)

So they took their time with the dragging out of the story and managed to come up with enough footage to give us a preview.

For the Open Thread this week, I thought of trying to gather thoughts on shows that I like which others do not. Let's see if we get more responses based on feeling or objective analyses.

Susan, you mentioned that you wanted to re-word a question to ask on the Open Thread???

My questions aren't time dependent... they can wait.

@GB

I'm thinking about asking people for (and limited to only one vote per category - so maximum of 6 total dramas).

(1) Best made drama and (2) most enjoyed drama in three categories:

(a) recent: from the last 5 years
(b) not so recent: between 5 and 10 years ago
(c) old school: more than 10 years ago

And what did they like about these dramas? And, if they have votes in multiple categories, what has changed about dramas between these time periods? What do they like better - then or now? Why?

Should I post this? I can always wait until you think it would be a good time - I don't want to interfere with someone else's comment thread.

Hi Susan
I wrote the comments below in 141 before coming back here. I was thinking that if you did the survey with a proper questionnaire, you can post a link to the questionnaire on more than one blog or streaming site. You want, I'm sure, to gather as many responses as possible.

The OT thread belongs to everyone who wants to comment about almost anything (so there's no such thing as interfering in someone's comment thread). I've tested the waters for you so to speak when I did the ratings questions LOL! so the good time is really when you want to get the info. You can decide when you want to do a post or whether you want to make it a formal or informal one. I'm just playing around for fun, although I do like to read the responses.

Hi Susan
The reason I started those lists of favorites or non-favorites was actually because you asked those questions or similar ones. I wanted to see if we could get much of a response. On OT #409, about rating shows in the last year... actual responses to my questions might have been about 10. The rest were comments about others' responses. The next week OT #410, to my question on rating disappointing shows it was about the same.

If individuals felt the questions were fun to answer, they would play, however in the OT, it's just informal fun and people will answer any way they wish, ie completely or incompletely and go off tangent.

If you have informal 'market research' to do, you may post your questions on OT directly - but if it is too much work, I'm not sure if many will play.

Another way is if you had your questions down on a questionnaire somewhere else and gave a link to them on the OT. Maybe if couched as a serious survey where their views really mattered, you'd get more responses???

There was a student once who asked for help in answering survey questions and she put out her questions (I can't remember if they were the same ones) at different times, and maybe in different threads, explaining what she was doing and asking for help. I think she did get quite a bit of respondents.

I asked you first, because it's the other way around... if you need the answers, then I won't post anything that is the same... there should be only 1 person asking those questions rather than 2 people asking similar questions. I'm doing it for fun, based on something you said, so I don't have to post my question. Just let me know if you're doing it so that commenters won't find themselves seeing similar questions on the same OT. :)

My post today was going to be something like this...

"Have you experienced thinking a show was OK but finding that you are in the minority, or that someone had reasons for disliking it, which surprised you?"

I was going to list the shows that others did not like and ask if they also disliked them and why.

Your question of 1) best made and 2) most enjoyed sounds a bit like the ratings question in #409. Divided into a), b) and c) it could derive more organized answers.

:-( Am I bad? I'm really sorry! I hit an insane few weeks of work where I kinda dropped the ball on everything else....

I did read those responses. And they were interesting. I wonder why only 10 people responded...

To be honest, I got fairly curious about this topic after some comments by both you and KDramaAddict JCW. She was saying how disappointing the modern Kdramas were compared to older ones. You've wondered several times why shows with character dev weren't more highly rated and why people weren't bothered much by a lack of character dev in other shows (mostly action.) So, I thought I'd see what people thought about shows in different eras and which shows they liked the best - and appreciated for quality.

I try to understand trends - what choices people make and why they make them. It's helpful when designing things...

Anyway, your idea about a survey is interesting. I'll look into posting something like that somewhere.

In the meantime, go ahead and post your question. I'm in a time crunch still and when I finally post in the OT I want to be able to engage with everyone properly! :-)

That was a student posting a link to help her with her research. Clicking that link took a great deal of trust. Questions turned out to be rather general. Demographics, how one watches kdramas...

As for responses to @GB's queries. 10 is pretty good. I think because she offered her own thoughts first, people had somewhere to start. At least one or two more or less echoed her points.

What worked against her might be "long posts." @mary created a Chrome browser plugin specifically for DB to show only a few sentences of each comment so a reader wouldn't have to scroll so much. Interested party can click something similar to more to read the rest of the comments.

I'm almost certain these questions have been asked in one form or another. Those who responded before probably don't feel the need to respond again.

Personally, what I like is often not "the best." I have a few movie DVD's. The one I watch the most often (once every 6 months or so) is Local Hero (1983). It inspired me to visit Nova Scotia, substituting Scotland. When I happen upon Lawrence of Arabia on TV, I always watch it. I am not sure how to rank LOTR (and within the trilogy itself), Star Trek IV, The Princess Bride, Ghostbusters, El Dorado (1966), Star Wars (Ep.4 to 6), Singing in the Rain, The Great Escape, and so on. I'll always forget something. If I'm asked for specific reasons, most of the time my answer would be "No clue."

Even when I more or less know the reasons I like a movie/show, formulating a coherent answer takes time. I would rather not bother. If I already feel one answer takes too long, ten answers... I don't think so.

Yes, I agree with your point that those who answered similar questions before will not feel the need to answer them again. That is the reason it's not good to post too many similar questions too close together in time and definitely in space.

One has to be very creative in re-phrasing the questions to make them entertaining or offer a gift or something to get more responses!!!

Hi @ Snickers and Susan
I'm currently munching on salad at my client's place. Just thought I'd turn on my hotspot to see what's happening... I can't use too much data though. Over here the wifi has gone because of some renovation work and I sent too many files to my team yesterday... feeling data deprived.

About long posts... it's true for me that when a post is too long, I don't feel like I really want to go into it in detail. I tend to skim unless something catches my eye.

I actually sometimes do make a conscious effort to edit and shorten... depending on mood and how important I think it is that someone reads a post.

Dramafever keeps recommending Doctor Stranger, Oh My Ghostess and BOF. I feel a little insulted, as if the algorithm "thinks" either I don't know they exist and/or I don't already know what I want. I watched BOF on dramafever. I chose not to watch the other two.

The premium subscription part has to do with me not using Viki right now. I'll reevaluate my streaming subscription at the end of the year.

0

The premise of "The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry" was interesting. Not many dramas about relationships between older women and younger men.

That led to East of Eden, too melo for me to continue.

Then BOF and Goddess of Fire. I spent a year learning ceramics and wheel throwing so I liked the pottery making parts of Goddess of Fire.

I watched Hidden Identity ep1. Not my cup of tea.

0

I wonder why they don't just take away the recommendations or recommend something that is really a classic and good. At least I do not have to use Dramafever since in my part of the world, I can't get anything beyond episode 5 for only some shows.

My husband tried to download and use some app or other so that we could pretend to be in the right zone, but it was no good and I feel brought in more threats and viruses. I killed that.
Oops... getting a Skype message from the team in India...

Viki's subtitles are definitely better. Dramafever's platform has improved. I had Shockwave plugin errors with Viki, never with dramafever.

That's pretty easily fixable though....

My Firefox browser security level is very high, with Ad Block Plus extension.

I use one of my google accounts and Chrome to stream, lower security and no ad blocking. I rarely google with it and only access a few selected sites. Shockwave plugin and Chrome just did not get along well enough.

They are all using/testing/trying out recommendation algorithms to achieve Netflix-like results. I guess many people actively seek entertainment so these companies feel obligated(?) to help.

Do you think the YP leads have any chemistry?

I'm curious, bc I've always felt that Joo Won is a very competent actor and brings emotion to any scenario well. Kim Tae Hee seems quite a bit more wooden - she' going for the scenes, but I don't always believe her. Independently of their acting, they seem to have a friends vibe but absolutely no chemistry.

And yet.

The comment section for YP 9. There are all these comments about them having amazing chemistry. So, I'm curious what you all think....

Required fields are marked *

Frankly, if it feels natural, I guess they have chemistry, if it appears like they are acting, then they don't??? I'd say 60:40 in favor of some chemistry but not all that much. I can't say fantastic chemistry.

BTW, our commenter has replied to you. :) Enjoy!!!

0

And I've responded to you about chemistry. You're in the hot seat, too! :-)

Thank goodness for SS fansplaining everything to us. Otherwise we might all notice what crap it's become!

0

"Frankly, if it feels natural, I guess they have chemistry, if it appears like they are acting, then they don’t??? "

:-) I can see the technique. So, it's obvious to me that they aren't naturally attracted to each other.

0

LOL! I'm beginning to get it!

An artist once told a us (librarians) to get good quality picture books for kids ie books with good quality art in particular. We, being laymen, asked how we'd know if the art was good or not. And the expert said, just keep looking at lots of good art... the stuff that already have been feted and applauded... then when we see low quality work, we'd just know.

I believe it might be the same technique that I'm trying to practise here. Find out what the good dramas are. Try to watch as many as possible and then see if the flaws in other dramas become more apparent to me. Haven't I chosen a fun hobby!!! :D

0

You know, what @Snickers asked about a person being planted to sway the viewers seems likely because of our intrepid commenter. "The show can do no wrong. Everything is exactly according to plan and going swimmingly." It goes on to such an extent, I'm getting suspicious! I'm not bothering to engage ... I don't see the need. I'll just skip around from here to newest OT to YP and have fun.

Off to grab a snack now... I'm going to put on weight!!! Couch potato-ing in front of the PC!

0

Yes! That's exactly how I learned about art. Lots of time in museums and learning about why artists were good - it had a lot to do with both an intellectual breakthrough and technique.

I'm thinking about making fried rice. All this food in Kdramas makes me hungry!!

0

You know, I think you're right and Snickers is on to something... or SS is such a rabid fan that she's obsessive...
She's singlehandedly destroying the possibility for discussion on that comment section. The same thing happened over at SWWTN (with other commenters).

0

Oh, interesting. The OT has all the smart commenters on it. Nice to read so many intelligent voices.

0

Yes, I have a gala time on Friday nights (my time zone), especially if the recap for a Wed/Thu show is up at the same time. So much to read... so many thoughts float around... some interesting questions. I like that on OT nowadays and for some time already, we've had people wanting to engage each other in discussion. The questions posed are not just to get info but to start a comfortable chat. Some comments are way entertaining!

Not just on OT but also in other threads, DB seems to have attracted some good writers and thinkers. The good thinkers are the ones it will be a plus to engage in a survey on shows, to get a sense of why shows are good (Like @Snickers said, we may like something but are not able to articulate why) ... although of course, the opinion of the general public must always count if you want to know what makes for popularity.

I was thinking that this itself could be a reference question at a library. To get an indication of the most frequently borrowed books in the Young Adults' Section. They may or may not have the list for themselves, however it's not certain that they will share. Still a library should have a reference counter and one can always ask as a researcher.
