GB's non-exhaustive list of 'must-watch' or 'don't-mind-trying-to-watch-a-show-for', kdrama actors/actresses.
I'm going to do this slowly since there's no rush and I need to think if I'd seriously want to watch them act. I think I can have a blanket cover condition... I'd watch almost anything except stuff that offends my sense of what's right and I'm very picky over sageuks, therefore there's less chance of me being lured to watch even my fave actors in them.
Mickey Park Yu Chun - I've watched him in Rooftop Prince, I Miss You and Girl Who Sees Smells.
I found him funny and endearing. Later shows, I started thinking that he's actually quite good. His comic timing, expressions and not-afraid-to-be-ugly attitude was noteworthy. The mark for me of a good actor is that I forget now and then who they are in RL and see them only as their character. Mickey Park managed that on and off.

Yes, he's on my must watch list as well. I'll watch at least one episode of anything he's in.
I've liked him in everything except Rooftop Prince, but I couldn't get past one episode of that show, so perhaps he improved I'm completely happy not finding out! :-D

Lee Sung Min - I definitely was watching him in Misaeng, and he did appear in these other shows that I watched...
Misaeng (tvN, 2014)
Miss Korea (MBC, 2013)
Arang and the Magistrate (MBC, 2012) cameo
The King 2 Hearts (MBC, 2012)
My Princess (MBC, 2011)
... however I must admit that I was not watching for him or noticing him before Misaeng. During and after Misaeng, I became a fan. Totally compelling and believable, whether understated or over the top. He just convinces me he is that character.

Actress Park Bo Young - Watching in (Oh My Ghost)
Actor Ji Sung - Watched him in
Kill Me, Heal Me (MBC, 2015)
Protect the Boss (SBS, 2011)
I put these 2 together because I'm so taken by their ability to switch personalities at a drop of a hat, and to do so, so completely all the way to mannerisms, expressions, tone of voice. Overflowing with talent. I'm extremely interested in any shows either of these 2 persons pick up.

Lee Bo Young - Loved her in IHYV. Watched her in
I Hear Your Voice (SBS, 2013)
Harvest Villa (tvN, 2010)
Yoon Eun Hye - Watched her in
Marry Him If You Dare (KBS2, 2013)
I Miss You (MBC, 2012)
Lie to Me (SBS, 2011)
Personal Preference (MBC, 2010) cameo
Take Care of the Young Lady (KBS2, 2009)
The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (MBC, 2007)
The Vineyard Man (KBS2, 2006)
Goong (MBC, 2006)
Movie: My Mini Black Dress
I find both these ladies delightful and so watchable. Lee Bo Young, I'd say is more talented and charismatic and yet, I find that I've watched almost all of Eun Yoon Hye's shows. I find her looks not so standard and more interesting. I believe I liked her best in Coffee Prince and Lie to Me although as Goong was my first ever kdrama.... I watched her and most of the show like 6-10 times!!! I hope she manages to choose a good show next.
Anyway these two ladies succeed in getting me excited about any project that they choose to do.

@KoreanDrama
"Wow that sounds interesting. I wonder what would the media franchise be composed of? Sorry for asking about more detail. Knowing that you are a producer makes me wanna know if you’ve seen “Producer” and incase you have do you think the portrayal of Producers was right? I watched the show only in order to know about the industry but I was not glad when it completely changed into a rom-com."
:-) Unfortunately I'm not a Korean variety show producers, so I actually have no idea how accurate that portrayal was. I do hope it was - I quite like the world they created. It was like one big loving and slightly dysfunctional family. I thought it was cute.
A new media franchise is an entertainment property that distributes across new media: desktop, mobile, ebook, social media, interactive live events, games, apps, etc.
It's something like Star Wars or Star Trek or James Bond without the film (at least at the beginning). New media productions can have moving image (film, tv, anime, doc, video, etc...) though they aren't a tentpole. Please forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know. :-) I'm never quite sure!
A tentpole is a project that big central pole that holds up the big circus tent. In a film franchise, it's the film. Everything else - games, theme park rides, books, toys, etc. etc. are called ancillaries. The success of all of these side ventures is dependent on the tentpole.
In a new media or transmedia project, the content is distributed - you can't learn the whole story in just one place. Star Wars is a bit like this. There are movies, but there are also kids movies, animations, books, games, etcetera that all have side stories that enrich the story universe.
New media projects start with all the small elements and may eventually build to a big element (such as a film or tv show.)

Wow Susan thank you for telling me this. I actually knew none of these things and terms :P . So you have a background in science but how did you end up becoming a producer? Plus if you have spare time could you please elaborate tentpole and ancillaries, though its not necessary for you to do so. Sorry I'm bothering you but I just want to gain some knowledge which for sure would not be included in my curriculum. Thank a lot again :)

I love a good discussion! Please ask any time. Btw - you should probably start a new thread below if you want me to find your questions....
The answer to your question about producers is that they seem to have all kinds of random backgrounds. It's often something that happens to you rather than something you choose. I was doing some very very different things with my career and having fun doing a little acting on the side. Once people in the industry discovered I had skills (strategy, planning, research, finance, business, etc.) they started asking me to do production work.
Tentpole is the main product of a production: the film or TV show or book series, etc. The ancillaries are all the related products: games, toys, e-commerce, theme park rides, etc. Each of these provides a revenue stream.

Continuation...
GB’s non-exhaustive list of ‘must-watch’ or ‘don’t-mind-trying-to-watch-a-show-for’, kdrama actors/actresses.
Seo In Guk and Lee Joon Gi (Lee Jun Ki)
Seo In Guk - Watched him in..
bits of Reply 1997
Love Rain
The Master's Sun
High School King of Savvy
I Remember You
I've been wondering if I'd watch him in anything, and now that he's got more acting under his belt, I believe yes, I'd like to watch him in almost any show. I have yet to bring myself to watch a sageuk like The King's Face just for an actor, but I may take a peak, because he intrigued me in I Remember You. Although I hated Love Rain, I can actually recall his character slightly, which speaks volumes, because I usually forget side characters entirely. I find him very intense and compelling. He was very good in Savvy.
Lee Joon Gi - Watched him in
My Girl
bits of The King and the Clown
Time Between Dog and Wolf
Arang and the Magistrate
bits of Two Weeks
I can say about the same for Lee Joon Gi as for Seo In Guk, in that I may not feel compelled to watch him in a sageuk like SWWTN, but I might in other shows. I found him too 'pretty' in My Girl, however his looks made a big impact for The King and the Clown. I preferred him in TBDW and the little that I watched of Two Weeks. Yes, as you say, he's an amazing goofball off-camera. I like watching BTS of him.

Okay - I think you jinxed me! :-) I got a call and it completely turned my schedule upside down. Super poo!
Seo In Guk
I find him compelling and sometimes good. Although The Master's Sun was a mediocre quirkfest (as all Hong sisters dramas seem to be), I really really liked him in it. His character in the first half of IRY was very good, then boring in teh second half. The High School King of Saavy was a great show and he was solid in it, but nothing to blow my socks off.
I feel that there's a good character role for him if he can only find one that has a great deal of emotion that's hidden underneath a stoic demeanor. Basically, he should go up against Park Yu Chun for roles.
Lee Jun Ki
Despite some very questionable choices in dramas (Arang, Joseon Gunman, SWWTN), he's stupidly good. Right on the edge between overacting and emoting beautifully. He's a delightfully reckless actor and I believe him in everything. To me, he's a more experienced and better looking version of Ji Chang Wook. Both for acting styles and range and goofball off camera demeanors.

in bits of Faith
Angry Mom
She came to my mind when I was thinking about actresses I might like to watch again. I have not caught her many works, however I was impressed by her in Angry Mom and feel I might like to catch her again in a different role.
Ji Hyun Woo -
Queen In-Hyun's Man
Trot Lovers
Angry Mom
I was most taken with him in QIHM and not so much in Trot Lovers. I might like to see him in roles which demand more of him and have him also performing musically.
More later... just got a work Skype message...

Kim Hee Sun is really really good. Full stop.
Ji Hyun Woo is miscast across the board. First of all, he needs to be in movies. Second of all, he needs to be a character actor rather than a leading man. He would make a wonderful sociopath. A delightful aids-ravaged gay man. A fantastic transgender woman. In short - he's absolutely wasted in stupid drama roles.
I would fall over myself to see him and Kang Dong Won (who's top of my list) in a film together. Imagine two brothers, both psychopaths vying against each other on opposite sides of a war. A period film set during the Korean war. Why doesn't this film exist?

BTW, I actually re-watched the last 2 episodes of High School King of Savvy just to see if Seo In Guk struck me as good then, and he did. I did not really pay attention before and I missed most of the last episodes. But this time, I watched for him and found myself (emotional drama viewer, that I am) feeling for him and laughing at him and Lee Ha Na. So yes, I can keep him on my list of should watch.

Seo In Guk is good. Just not great yet.
The breakout performance in HSKOS was Lee Soo Hyuk. It's his best role so far - he's compelling in it. To me Lee Soo Hyuk seems like an undeveloped Kang Dong Won. He's got that great screen presence and understated, but emotional presence of a great actor. What he lacks so far seems to be experience/training. Somehow he doesn't shine in every role. I feel like a really good acting coach is all he needs to get to the next level.

Shin Sung Rok - Watched him in ...
Liar Game (tvN, 2014)
Trot Lovers (KBS2, 2014)
You Who Came From the Stars (SBS, 2013)
Being a bit a bigot when it comes to bad guy characters, I enjoyed watching him in Liar Game and YWCFTS, but was not willing to praise him sky high the way other commenters did. LOL. I will admit that he put in 110% in his roles and was smouldering, crazy, evil when the role called for it. It was a refreshing change to see him in Trot Lovers. I feel a lot of it is also his look... just so intense, so I'm a little biased in wondering if I am getting carried away by his dark appearance and am not giving his acting a fair viewing. Maybe for this reason I'll put him on my to-watch list.

'The Thieves'
I just watched the first few minutes of The Thieves to see... Yes, that's Shin Ha Kyun.
I do want to watch that movie. Gianna Jun, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Hye Soo are in it.
Gianna Jun - I've only ever seen Gianna Jun in YWCFTS and really liked her coupling with Kim Soo Hyun.
Kim Soo Hyun - I did also watch him in Dream High and Moon Embracing the Sun. I did not notice him much in METS. I liked him a lot more as the alien.
I might give shows a look, if they are in them individually and especially if they are together. However, I did not care for The Producers, and hardly watched it even for Gong Hyo Jin and Kim Soo Hyun.

No worries Susan, I'm just stealing time to read and chat around here.
I read your comments at SWWTN Ep 14, and although I'm not watching it, I know what you mean from what happened at Mask. Even in My Secret Hotel, after the change of writer the characters changed and the story just dithered for no particular reason... both on the crime and the romance fronts. Even in TTILY which was not much of a story to begin with, the first 4 episodes were more charming than after the writer change.
Tonight (for me) Open Thread will be up again. I saw that one of your questions (on the Yong Pal recap thread, I believe it was), was what are the shows that commenters consider the worst we've seen. I've actually been putting down my own totally subjective ratings of the shows of this year. I will put it up on OT #409. If there are responses, you can get an idea of what commenters think are the worst shows among other things like maybe their faves or what was middling.
However, I'll still return to this almost dead OT 408 to continue where we left off. :)

I go in with my heart, but I also want to know if what I like is considered good from the Production pov. It doesn't bother me much that I like something that is poorly produced... although I guess it used to. I just need to know why it's bad and I ask myself why I liked it anyway.
Dare I say, it takes a more mature viewer to go into it like this? Heheheh!
That being said, however, I'd prefer to like something that is good and to feel that I like it not only because it made me feel good, but because it was good. It sort of justifies my liking it. I guess that's what upsets commenters who see their shows being critiqued. They may feel that they are being criticised for liking something with flaws.

BTW, the incidence of working like crazy, exhaustion, not sleeping much and being sick ? usually go hand-in-hand. Take lots of longer breaks ? and exercise ? too. Get away from the computer ?, drink lots of fluids ? (non-alcoholic) and sleep more.
OK... that's the end of my motherly rant.
I have to rant at myself because I too was up at 2.50am, slept at 4.15am, up again to start my day at 5.30am and have been sneezing in the very violent way that bodes ill. Back to appear like I'm working now.... doesn't matter really since I'm working from home. ?

Well, it was all fun and games for teh first 10 episodes - more or less the entire comment section was having fun laughing at it. Then they made a writer switch at ep 11. That's when about half of the comment section left - it was a lot less fun to make fun of it. The ones who stayed liked the writer switch.
What was really interesting was the ire - as opposed to disagreement - toward my writing comments. Wow! I've gotten a little group of bullies after me!

I generally don't want to add more weight to antis discussions by replying... it usually gives them more fuel.
It's always been a tough call. To rationally justify why I have the opinion which risks being taken the wrong way once again and just encourages more vitriolic reactions... or just keep quiet and appear to be a coward.
As long as I know I'm not a coward, I guess I don't care too much what the others think. :) So I keep quiet.

Yong Pal *SPOILERS MAYBE*
So now I'm dying to know if you think the production is still on the straight and narrow.
I like the pace and the fact that so many players are in the game, but they do not exactly know all the rules or even if they are playing the same game, since rules are changed along the way and each team's ultimate goal(s) is/are different.
Can I separate the teams correctly?
Tae Hyun and Chief Nurse
Chae Young and her dad
Do Joon, Chief Lee and Director
Cynthia and President Go
And bald mobster so quickly is helping Yong Pal... I thought he'd do so later on in the show.
I'm thinking of the characters now... and so far they are still consistent.

August 20, 2015 at 11:13 PM
I think my prediction in ep 2 for the show plotting has turned out pretty accurately:
"YP has been caught by white collar criminals who both want his talents and believe he can be effectively blackmailed long term. YP will want to protect his sister and eventually Sleeping Beauty. A conflict will arise that jeopardizes these. He will need help to solve a mystery and vanquish the white collar baddies. He’ll get that help from the bald-headed mobster."
growingbeautifully
August 20, 2015 at 11:23 PM
Potential to get messy: I feel the potential is high only from a viewer POV in that there are so many characters/teams with their own agendas... the story has to keep each of their arcs going consistently or get rid of some of them or merge them into few teams so that we can concentrate on just 1 good guy and 1 bad guy or something more simplistic.
So if the writers suddenly forget to end off one of those teams coherently, viewers will be asking, what happened to so and so???
susan
August 20, 2015 at 11:26 PM
I like the confusion of many teams. It avoids character development completely! :-)
Seriously, this is all plot driven. There's a little character development with Yong Pal and that's about it.
It's challenging to pull this all off though - the aud will only stay with a plot if it's reasonably believable. With so much complexity and a tendency to already ignore medical realities, I wonder if they can pull it off over 16 eps.
growingbeautifully
August 20, 2015 at 11:27 PM
Yes, when you first wrote your prediction for the show, I already agreed (maybe just mentally and not commented) that it was the way it would go. I'm glad that it has panned out. I just expected it later as in a last ditch effort to get away and there was no recourse but Doo Chul mobster.
I'm still hoping that we have not seen the last of him. He injected a bit of comedy and some heart into the show and it was fortunately not as melo as the sister/father arc. It's nice to have the serious, lighter and slightly melo tones interacting.

LOL! Now you've got me worried! But this is the other reason I watch... to enjoy or failing which, to dissect what is going wrong and where it starts unravelling.

The crazy thing is how in the entire thread not one person (except KDaddict?JCW) responded to my points about lack of coherency with the story! The only thing they seemed to want to declare is that 'they all agreed that I was wrong and that ratings didn't matter unless, of course, you looked at AGB Nielsen ratings for all of the country, which were less bad.'
I had previously explained to someone that the Seoul ratings were more important bc they are more representative the right age demographic (cities are younger in general bc people work in them earlier in life and retire to the country later.) But well, it doesn't seem that anyone is much interested in technical issues in that discussion...

Ah - I see that thread has paused over there. There are 20 episodes, so I guess they can use a full 8 - 10 for character dev and still have the remaining 10 for a plot to take advantage of that.
Or they can develop as they go - sprinkle it throughout the series (which is what I imagine they'll go for.)
Let's see. If they take the equivalent of 2 - 4 episodes for character dev, that's at most 3 characters per episode. The most is 12. So, maybe they could develop everyone. Following them all is another matter. Besides, its a little annoying to get a character developed without following their emotional arc.
I vote that they'll develop 5 - 6 characters well and follow them. The other characters will get minor development and will stay somewhat undeveloped.

Hi Susan,
On Yong Pal:
I believe we may have more comments for Episode 6 since the even numbered ones have the longer waiting time before the next episode and may also have the more stress-inducing and bigger clliff-hangers. :)
I found the Ep 6 fight sequence very long drawn out and a little bit laughable since there were security men every end of the corridor to battle and they could go nowhere else except to through the corridors to get to the lifts. In the end, no matter how many men they put out there, the hero was going to make it through to the lift anyway. Heh!
They should have had fewer security men (saved more on all those pay checks) and a shorter fight scene and maybe more badass Cynthia instead or a longer and better struggle between TH and bad security guy with gun.

@Susan
1. @GB told those of us at Healer thread about her conversation with you here.
2. My first kdrama was The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012) rerun on local Korean channel. I've watched around 25 kdramas total. About 4 to 5 currently-airing dramas a year.
3. As for American TV, 4 shows, some sports and news are all I watch.
4. When it comes to TV, I prefer to be in the lowest energy state, or close to it, don't think or analyze. Of course, sometimes I can't help but anticipate plot development/logical progression.
5. I watch Scholar Who Walks the Night on dramaferver licensed with a 2-week lag. I don't have much attachment to it. Reading the recap before I see the episode actually helps me to remain "in the lowest energy state."
6. I've always enjoyed mythology- Greek/Roman, Celtic, Norse, Hindu, Chinese, Egyptian... These ancient stories are not always consistent, coherent or logical. I can tolerate a great deal of chaos in fantasies.
7. Based on what I read at DB SWWTN recaps, people acknowledged the writing wasn't great from the start. Your position is by adding a new writer, the overall quality of the show declined causing it to lose viewers. You cited the show's ratings to support your argument. Causation/correlation/inference. That piqued my interest.

positive correlation of show's writing quality with ratings
Does it exist? Even if there is absolute objective standards to judge writing, good writing doesn't necessarily translate to good show, which in turn, doesn't always get good ratings, right?
Others in the production team can muck up things. Can good writing overcome weak acting? If so, how often? I don't know because I don't judge acting. Must be all the cartoons I watched as a kid.
Anecdotally, BOF, Heirs and The Moon Embracing the Sun all had blockbuster ratings. I don't think the first two were lauded for the writing. I remember JB and GF didn't think much of the 3rd either. Charlie Sheen made tons and tons of money with Two and a Half Men. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a cult following but not wide-spread popularity. Star Trek, the original TV series, lasted only 3 seasons.

August 22, 2015 at 12:52 AM
Wow! So many good points!
Let's see, I think your questions are:
1) What is the correlation between ratings and quality?
2) Can good writing overcome acting?
3) And, implicitly, what's up with all these cult favorites? Right?
'Causation/correlation/inference' between ratings and quality....
If you don't mind, I'd to look at restaurants as a way to consider a comparable example.
Globally, McDonald's is/was very popular. I think no one would argue that its quality is equal to El Celler de Can Roca (currently ranked the best restaurant in the world: https://www.eater.com/2015/6/1/8699487/the-worlds-50-best-new-restaurants-2015).
On the other hand, what if everyone around the world had the same access and price for McD's and ECDCR? (As happens with shows - the best and the worst quality shows have the same price and distributability.) Would ECDCR be more popular just because it is a favorite of food critics? Would McD's have a food that, because it was developed to appeal to a lowest common denominator, would remain most popular? Would audiences, once given access to ECDCR, begin to alter their tastes and begin to want more ECDCR flavors mixed into their pre-existing McD's taste?
In fact, in the food world, McD's is for the very first time,
facing a global decline in popularity. It turns out that people globally have, indeed, gotten more access to better quality food and are no longer interested in McD's at the same rate that they used to be. They still like fast food, but they like it a little fresher and better prepared.
I think that the correlation between ratings and quality works somewhat the same way. The highest quality shows from a critic's perspective may not draw a large audience as these shows often have a unique 'flavor', however as audiences are exposed to better and better quality shows, they like their fast entertainment to be of better quality as well.
It isn't so much that audiences will turn to a show for its quality, it's more that, like McD's, they'll turn away for its lack thereof.
2) No.
3) A rare taste that can't easily be found so that, when it does, every enjoys it as much as possible. (In the case of BOF and Heirs that taste was good looking boys being rakish and charming with a relatively plain and ordinary girl deriving all the benefit thereof. That kind of cheese only happens once in a blue Lee Min Ho moon.)

I agree with the evolving taste. However, can we compare taste for food, which might be more objectively quantified, to writing? Again, anecdotally, I remember C. S. Lewis being not much a fan of J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional works.

CS Lewis may have had an ideological bias though.
From a world building pov, Tolkien is wonderful. I think he's quite lacking, however, when it comes to narrative.
I think that taste in food and in writing are fairly comparable in objectivity.
To relate my previous post to SWWTN, I think that the lowering ratings correlate to a lowering quality of the overall product. Audiences came in with an expectation of a light romance and dark adventure and now have a political drama. It's a big like ordering a salad and getting a boar. If I'm hungry, I'll stay for lunch (or of I like boar), but I probably won't keep coming back for salad.

AGB Nielson Seoul
Somewhere above you said this rating is more relevant because the audience is younger. Is that the vampire fantasy sageuk target audience? Personally I believe, that is, no data to back this up, older east Asians are comfortable with fantasy sageuk. Fantastic stories are part of the culture. Judeo-Christian beliefs have not relegated them to the background.
I looked up the ratings at AsianWiki.com. The site contains AGB Nielsen and TNmS of Seoul and nationwide ratings and rankings. Ratings are absolute while rankings are relative.
Because these are numbers, I was compelled to plot them and run linear regressions. Through episode 10, AGB Seoul ratings were essentially flat while TNmS Seoul showed a very gradual decline. Drop in ranking was more obvious. To me, this shows that although SWWTN had about the same number of viewers, other shows gained viewers.

Yeah, I started to run a regression as well and then realized I couldn't post a picture, so waste of time.
I'm not thinking that the fantasy aspect of the show is the reason it will skew young on viewership. I think its the ages of the protagonist / antagonists. Also, its a fair piece too silly to appeal to many older viewers.

ratings
Using Chicago area and surrounding 100-mile region as an example. This summer we have been beset with severe weather. Local TV stations, occasionally national affiliates included, would preempt regularly scheduled content to marathon weather updates and damage reports. I assume the ratings of those shows would be zero if the preemption occurred at the "wrong" time. Unless some kind of correction was made in the overall national computation, Chicago, being a major market, would cause a drop in ratings of these shows.

When a Chicago Cubs baseball game was preepmted by tornadoes 90 miles away while things were calm here, many viewers complained.
Because the TV broadcast area is huge, unaffected people might turn off the TV, switch to another channel or stream something online when their show gets preempted for an extended period of time.

Anyway
AGB Seoul
8/5/2015 SWWTN ep 9 8.6% (12th); Yong-pal ep 1 12.9% (3rd)
8/6/2015 SWWTN ep 10 7.4% (18th); Yong-pal ep 2 16% (3rd)
8/12/2015 SWWTN ep 11 6.8% (not in top 20); Yong-pal ep 3 16.3% (3rd)
8/13/2015 SWWTN ep 12 7.1% (19th); Yong-pal ep 4 17.8% (2nd)
The drop in ranking actually came at ep 6 to 18th from 11th of ep 5. The ranking pretty much stayed around 18th. Ratings on 8/5/2015 is odd. Seems like generally fewer people watched TV that day.
I would conclude that some people hung in with SWWTN as long as they could but just couldn't get into it. They either switched to something else or dropped it.
There seems to be a small rebound in the ratings though.

I would agree that people hung out with SWWTN as long as they could and then bolted. I doubt it's coincidental, however, that the disappearance correlated with the change in tone from light to heavy.
Basically, if the ratings climb back into the 8% territory and remain there, then I'll think that the show has recovered from the new writer.
I agree that one show can siphon viewers from another. However, why would the audience for SWWTN and Yong Pal be the same? Even the comment threads for on DB for the two shows have nearly entirely different people.

1. There is no reason they can't overlap, especially with Korean audience who are used to both modern and saguek.
OMG it's Healer watches both. She is much more excited about Yong-pal than SWWTN (apparently watching only for LJK now).
2. It's possible that not as many SWWTN viewers actually have forsaken it. They might DVR it to watch later.
3. Many of SWWTN commenters have been Beanies for a while. Don't know about Yong-pal. Could be delukers and newcomers. Funny thing about that group is long-time DB commenters tend to be less of cheerleaders but more analytical and critical. Newcomers often don't stick around.

1. It's not that they can't overlap, it's that they aren't similar enough for me to assume they will overlap.
I agree with OMG It's Healer. LJK is absolutely the best thing about that show! Seriously good actor.
2. Okay, for that to well describe the drop in viewership, then all of them are watching Yong Pal and DVRing? This is only slightly better than imagining them all starting to train for a marathon and DVRing....
3. Being a Beanie has nothing to do with whether they comment on both threads. As far as the SWWTN thread goes, I would say it has definitely evolved in character thoughout the show. There aren't as many analytical voices as there were for the early episodes.

2. GB mentioned that she WAS halting Midnight Diner for a while due to her busy schedule and adding Yong-pal. But, she's back on track with Midnight Diner.
The declining in SWWTN rating is real, for now. There isn't enough information to find the real cause(s). Also, we don't know whether the number will rebound.
The declining in quality may be real. Or, maybe it was bad from the beginning but now it's a different kind of bad. Everyone has different tolerance levels for different "bad." I was mostly fine with Blood. Journal of the Night Watchman bugged me but not as much as Joseon Gunman.
But both correlating with the addition of a new writer...

I thought you were mentioning this to make a point... however you lost me... LOL! were you making a point? Maybe as in that people do change their minds?
True I WAS going to stop temporarily, thinking I had too much to do. In a state of rebellion and seeing that Midnight Diner got subbed, finally, I decided to try a half an hour. Seeing that I could manage to steal more time, I watched (FFD) the next episode as well. I have yet to watch Ep 12 in full, but yes I shall and soon. :)

I gather that neither of you have yet settled the points you set out to make? LOL!
I'm glad to see that you have found each other to chat with.
My very simplistic way of thinking... (sorry if this is another point and not the one you are trying to make). Does a schizophrenic shift in a show (due to a change in writer) followed by a fall in ratings/ranking indicate that the writing has become bad (or worse than before)?
1) Show seems to advertise itself as A, starts off that way but with a writer change, becomes B some episodes down the road.
2) Some viewers feel cheated. Some viewers like the change.
3) Ratings and rankings may or may not change. Either way they do not reflect the integrity of a show or lack thereof, they only reflect if some numbers of viewers are watching for whatever reasons they may have.
4)Since people both intelligent and super intelligent have various reasons for watching or dropping shows, ... many of which may not be based on the quality or integrity of the show, an assumption that the change in the figures in ratings and rankings indicate strength/weakness in writing, is "beset" with invalidity.
A correlative conclusion is extremely hard to draw.
If I am any indication... when I choose to watch a show, no matter how badly written it becomes, I may continue to watch it to the end, complaining all the way and still enjoying myself in the process. Totally unscientific, irrational and unreckonable. :)

:-) I think you've hit the nail on the head with your answers 1) and 2).
3) is not true. Ratings do reflect changes in viewership. That's why they are used.
4) Your logic here is not quite right. People do drop shows bc of a lack of quality. It's actually the most common reason. Although Snickers is absolute correct that correlation is not sufficient to determine causation, my proposition that the poor writing in SWWTN has negatively affected quality and thus indirectly ratings remains the most probable mechanism. Another equally likely cause hasn't been suggested yet. Strength/weakness in writing is actually a very strong reason for ratings outcomes (bc it is a very common reason). So you shouldn't see it as beset with invalidity.
Correlations are easy to find - it is the conclusion part that requires more data (such as a survey of the audience). However, in every day life we function based on experience from prior experience. If you keep dropping your cell phone, you swear and note gravity in action. So, if declining quality (or significant change of tone) is a common cause of audiences leaving a show, and a show has a ratings drop that corresponds with these factors, then, in absence of another equally likely mechanism to cause the decline, it is quite reasonable to infer that the change in quality is the most likely proximate cause in ratings decline.
Btw - I also watch shows to the end if there is anything I like about it enough to ignore the problems that come up. SWWTN has beautiful costuming and acting. I may cringe from the clunky exposition and plotting, but the actors are wonderful.

Hi Susan, just to be thorough (not that I am always this meticulous)
I said: "3) Ratings and rankings may or may not change. Either way they do not reflect the integrity of a show or lack thereof, they only reflect if some numbers of viewers are watching for whatever reasons they may have."
You said: "3) is not true. Ratings do reflect changes in viewership. That’s why they are used."
At a risk of sounding like I contradict myself ... I can agree that the change in numbers may be correlated to the writing. My point was that although ratings do reflect the change in viewership, they do not reflect whether the show had integrity or not because viewers even watch shows that lack or lose integrity. Those people who liked the change in the writing, may actually draw in like-minded friends who then start watching a show although it has become 'bad'... while others who feel cheated leave. In that sense it is hard to tell that the numbers rising or falling is due to whether they find a show is good or bad. The correlation is more to whether the show is more popular or not and not to the reason why.
I will agree that your "4) ...Strength/weakness in writing is actually a very strong reason for ratings outcomes..." but as you say, the conclusion needs data. The piece of data we need is why people drop shows.
I could drop a show because like @Snickers says, I got busy or other shows came along. So that was not due to the writing.
However for all reasons to do with the show itself, it is likely the writing. My 2 biggest peeves are not developing an arc that was set up nicely and changing the personality of characters drastically.... yet, I continued watching!!! I wonder how many individuals there are like myself. Thus I feel that the correlation (without this data) is indicative at best.

:-) I'm probably going to have to finish that epic response at some point.... it was a full throated explanation of why I am confindent those ratings at SWWTN absolutely reflect a change in writing....
"I will agree that your “4) …Strength/weakness in writing is actually a very strong reason for ratings outcomes…” but as you say, the conclusion needs data. The piece of data we need is why people drop shows."
The question is how many times you need the data.... That people leave shows bc the quality has gone down or the original tone has changed is well known. Should we do a survey every single time?
"I could drop a show because like @Snickers says, I got busy or other shows came along. So that was not due to the writing."
You could, in order for a trend in Nielsen to show up, everyone would have to do it. A trend represents lots of people with lots of different motivations all choosing to do one thing in common - not watch a show over multiple episodes. In a big sample, people coming and going for a variety of reasons tend to even out. If the sample isn't big enough (AGB Nielsen Nationwide) the variability overwhelms it and overall trends are had to distinguish. (For that sample it has to do with the watching patterns of older people - the aren't as consistent as younger viewers.)
So, that trend in AGB Seoul will have to be explained by a common occurrence. That thing will have to do with either the show or distribution. The show = quality or tone or addition/loss of a beloved actor. Distribution = moving time slot, something else attractive came on in that hour etc.
Which leaves us with only two likely answers for why people have decamped: either they didn't like the changes in the show when the new writer came on board or they went to Yong Pal.
The thing is - in order to go to Yong Pal, they also had to be willing to leave SWWTN. And that's where I think that logic stumbles. People have 5 weeks of sunk costs in watching those characters. They didn't leave through all those episodes with the previous writer - audience share remained flat. People were loyal. In short, people looked past that writer's flaws bc they found enough to love. The only left when the new writer showed up and the tone changed drastically from light and romance to dark and plotting.
Also, they may have gone to Yong Pal, but I'm really suspicious of that. Those shows have such drastically different tones, that I wouldnt' expect the saeguk fantasy young adult romance junkies to be like "a convoluted fast-paced intrigue and violence based show- let's go!". So, maybe some did go. But they would have needed a push from SWWTN to leave - and the new writer provided exactly that!
:-)
And then you arrive at exactly the same conclusion about why people leave shows..
"However for all reasons to do with the show itself, it is...

I dropped Joseon Gunman around Ep 16. AND I didn't go anywhere else. Disclaimer: I'm often an outlier.
Besides, wouldn't there be a lag? When did the new writer come in? I've accepted inconsistencies in kdramas- that flying by the seat of their pants approach, sudden change of plot direction, characters simply disappearing! I would think Korean audience would at least give it a few more episodes, sunk cost like you said.
There is still the matter of re-prioritizing your dramas. This way you don't have to drop anything.

You continue watching - as to many people - hence the ratings decline over at SWWTN isn't bigger. That was captured in the data - and you can see it.
But the ratings are rather good - they are capturing something quite accurate: the show changed drastically, something else came along, a large chuck of the audience decamped.

Definitely on Point 2
Age of Feeling/Inspiring Generation had an epic feel for the first 10 episodes. Beanie viewers (more representative of international audience?) generally liked it a lot. Ratings in Korea were not good, 7 out of 10 in single digits. Head writer left after finishing ep. 10. New head writer came in. Beanie viewers generally didn't like what the show became (griping and snarking grew steadily) while ratings in Korea improved, never dropping below 10%.
There were posters declaring they would never return to DB AF/IG recaps because the comments became too critical and negative. Same went for BOF and Mischievous Kiss. Maybe they were Triple-S?

@ GB
About casting...
When I first started out I worked with a very high end casting director. I used to ask her the same thing you asked me, "How do you know which actor to choose for a role? What do you look for?" And she said, "I know it when I see it."
She didn't come in with preconceived notions about what was good for a role - she waited to see what the actor would bring in the audition. She cast against type all the time - different ethnicities, sex, unexpected people. It was like she just had a sense of what would be a beautiful performance on a screen.
Of course, she was pretty special, she had cast quite a few Oscar winning films and had even found relative unknowns for roles who had gone on to win that trophy.
I can imagine that your next question is "How did she know who to audition if she didn't have a preconceived notion of what she was looking for?" She watched a lot of people - actors she'd seen at previous auditions, actors she saw on screen, people she just happened to meet at parties... We used to watch a lot of films together to look at actors' performances, and as she watched those performances, she began to imagine the possibilities of other things they could do with those skills. There was a lot a free association there.
Some things, of course, have to do with technique. Everyone starts somewhere and people grow, so this can evolve. On the other hand, talent - an innate ability to be technically good early on - is a big deciding factor on who gets cast young enough to get experienced enough for the top roles. Take a look at all those people in the background. They wanted to be actors, too!
On a business level, top actors are often cast by considering both their ability to bring something commercial to the role - a big audience! That's why you get some real miscasting problems - for the show to get funding to get made, it needs a headliner. On the other hand, if the headliner doesn't do a good job, the audience bolts. Leading men and women have both an acting job and a fan group development job. It's why you have so few Kang Dong Wons out there. It's hard to just be good enough to draw audiences. Most people have to be popular as well as competent. And popular means pretty, no scandals, etc etc.

Hi @Susan,
I'm late to the party. GB just gave me your message. I want to tell you I was happy to weigh in and show my support.
I always enjoy reading you, but don't run into your comments that often. They are always well-informed, well thought out and well argued.
Like you said, viewers don't watch a show for its technical aspects, but do notice when sthg is amiss, like whether their car corners well in the rain.
I can fangirl as much as anyone else, hence my participation in the Healer craze, but aside from the actors, it is a MUST that the story-world be believable in order to fangirl. And well-constructed story-worlds have been few and far between in KDs in the last couple years. The writing has really really gone down the drain. It's my biggest pat-peeve about KDs nowadays. When the writing is down right shitty, as in Hyde, J&M, Time I've loved u or maybe not, I feel totally insulted. How dare they think so little of our time and intelligence to give us such crap and expect us to watch and be OK w it, just becos some of our fav stars are in them?
You asked who the stars are that we'd watch no matter what they appear in. Since HydeJ&M, I'm afraid I've to say Nobody! I was a diehard Hyun Bin fan, went to his fan meeting and all, and used to think that I could watch him watch paint dry, well, HJ&M taught me otherwise. Every sec of every scene made me feel insulted. As (not If) they've zero respect for their work and audience, I just want to spit on that piece of output. It belongs in the garage bin, Not on the tv screen. I basically feel that way about every damn KD at that quality level.
To be cont.

So, I am very curious to have your recommendations for earlier shows that you felt had much better writing. What do you think was the reason? Did they used to write all the episodes at once? Because writing as the show goes on and tweaking it on the fly can really screw up a carefully planned story arc!
"I feel totally insulted. How dare they think so little of our time and intelligence to give us such crap and expect us to watch and be OK w it, just becos some of our fav stars are in them?"
I love that you use the word 'insulted' to describe the way you felt about this. I had an advisor in uni who used to use this word whenever he felt someone was presenting something trite to senior faculty. It perfectly captures the outrage of the audience...

@Susan and GB,
I'm glad to have this dead thread to rant on. Wouldn't want anyone jumping all over me for expressing my frustration to have my sincere addiction to KD turned into disappointment.
Truth is I've been watching KDs since Winter Sonata. I've seen their better days, their "evolution", and their downward spiral. I've also seen much much better productions outside K-ent, like Brideshead Revisited, West Wing, Downton Abbey, Star Wars, Harry Porter, etc. Tho I don't hold KDs to those hi standards, I know those stds exist. And when the bottom falls out of the barrel in a KD, I can tell.
I'm also older than the average fangirl. Have a Ph.D. from UCLA, been a professor and a project manager in corporate settings, so I'm used to being analytical and technical. "Sh_t" in sb's work really bothers me, esp. when I'm watching it unfold. Therefore, these days, I hardly find that any KD is worth wasting my time and energy over. I sort of glance at them, see the writing and production flaws quickly. If they aren't too glaring, I watch it over dinner; if they are, I'd rather watch sthg else w my meal, so as not to get indigestion. So that's where I'm at.
Just about to change my handle to "EX-KDaddcit"!!!!

Hi Susan,
I was just over at the YP thread. I commented on the fighting (you asked me over here I think?) in Comment 51.
I believe I saw the comment about 'well written and smart characters'.... I decided to hold my tongue / or hands to be more accurate (LOL!). Although I like that Yeo Jin, Chae Young, Chief Nurse and Tae Hyun are shown to be smart in the way they speak and think, I can't really say that their characters are as well written as say, the characters of Healer, or even the main characters of I Remember You. They have not yet become layered characters, because their thoughts are not sufficiently revealed to us. Aside from the few of TH's and YJ's flashbacks and dreams, we know nothing much of their past. However we still feel something for them, probably because, as you say, the actors are able to do a lot with very little. They have expressed some thing beyond just a couple of staid emotions, maybe that they are conflicted or have other better feelings, even without words, and are therefore still interesting.
Now we are questioning everyone's true motives, wondering who may double cross or be trustworthy. It's still fun to make all kinds of conjectures about these people with the little we know.
But I'm sure we want to be able to guess correctly, and if we guess wrong continually or don't know what guesses to make, we will not be too pleased. Which brings to mind a question ... with the plot being pretty thick at the moment, people are saying they love the episode and how great it is... but how far can plot alone without character development take the show in terms of continually being lauded? What's your experience of this?

Yep, yep! I think you're spot on as usual... this drama had better do a little background dev on the characters to mold aud expectations or have a really tight plot and stick to it! If they start mucking around halfway through and the plot is all that holds it together, they'll lose a chunk of their audience.
I think I'm going to do a little research on some of these topics... Maybe collect data on various Kdrama shows - ratings, writing changes, other shows that come on at the same time, etc.... I wonder if I can get something on international licensing as well. I can't imagine Viki or DramaFever will share their numbers with me.... hmmmm.... who do I know? :-)
It would be interesting to see how and when audiences for Kpop shift... also I could collect data on platforms....
Sigh, sorry, this is actually a big thing I'm going to be working on soon.

Starting a new thread for some of @harmonyfb's comments which were back on the last page.... really interesting....
" who are your I-will-see-this-actor-in-anything people
Lee Joon-Ki, obviously (he is a really good actor), and Kwon Hyun Sang (I love his bad guy roles). If I see Lee Sung-Min, Kim Sang-Ho or Ma Dong-Seok listed, I’m apt to give it a go, because I like their acting, as well.
Kim Seul-gi is also a big plus for me – she is so funny. :)
Oh-hell-no-I-just-can’t-do-it people?
I don’t know that I have any. Bad actors can surprise you with the right direction & script, while even good actors can be dragged down by bad material.
Master’s Sun
I liked the spooky ghosts at the beginning, and then I couldn’t stop watching because of how ridiculously manipulative the male lead character was.
I’m gonna trust you because IRY and Master’s Sun were pretty disappointing for me.
The first set – my ‘bestest’ are all pretty darn good, and all very different genres. Misaeng and Two Weeks even my I-don’t-like-Korean-shows husband loved."

Thanks for your information on how you got your experience with the Casting Director. Ultimately it sounds like some people just have the knack of knowing and they hone their ability with lots of practice. I guess it can be somewhat learnt as well, although it may take much longer and be more touch and go in getting the right person for the right role?
I forgot to mention that I've decided to pick up a 2014 show from OCN, Cheo Yong Season 1 (Ghost Seeing Detective Cheo Yeong). I've marathoned 3 episodes so far... not bad. Hero is haunted literally and figuratively, by present ghosts and by a sad past respectively. He struggles with himself but his better side usually wins.
Leads are Oh Ji-ho as Yoon Cheo-yong, Oh Ji-eun as Ha Sun-woo (Season 1) and Jun Hyoseong as Han Na-young.

I actually think really good casting directors might be just like really good actors - innate talent.
It can take a very long time to cast - not just from an artistic point of view - but also from scheduling and negotiations povs. It's common to have several casting directors - one for the main cast, another for the minor cast, another for extras.
You asked me earlier about how I could state so confidently what I saw in someone's performance. Half of that is a bad habit of mine of stating my opinions decisively and the other half is experience. I got into production bc I was acting first. I empathize with performances.
I'll check out that show. In a few days... when someone releases me from these insane deadlines! (Someone = me) :-) Also, did I recommend the JDrama "Doctor's Affairs" to you? It's oddly hyper-accurate for a medical drama right down to the bs that goes on in hospitals!

You work with a firm that sets that up. They have a lot of connections and they reach out to companies who might have an interest in advertising their products through product placement. These deals are generally part of the pre-production deals for early financing.

@Susan,
Instead of reply at #84 and having us scroll up, I'm just gonna reply to you here in a new comment. Hope you catch it.
I may not have a theatre background, but I dabbled in Comp Lit in Grad School. Did 1 semester of it b4 it dawned on me that there'd be no jobs w such a requirement. I've always loved world lit. I was an avid reader, (b4 I succumbed to my KD addiction), and am grounded in the skills of good story telling. So when a KD derails, the script going south is the 1st thing I notice. TBH, most A-list K actors are really good, so it's hardly ever their fault that we can't be lured into their make-believe world.
Of course, as we know, the K-ent ind is a meat grinder; writers aren't given the time to finish a script b4 filming begins, and there just aren't enough of them who are talented enough to make up sthg the day b4 shooting and have the whole series come out coherent. What we get then are story worlds, that illogical, inconsistent, even nonsensical. It is not just entirely the fault of the writing, directing is often at fault too, but it largely is.

@Susan,
You asked what I thought of earlier productions. Well, I got a sense that there was respect in their work, a commitment to making sure the project come out as good as they can make it, given their realities. Sure, the stories were trite, full of incurable diseases, amnesia, tropes that we now tire of. But all the other aspects of production we up to snuff. Take for example the 4 Season series: Winter Sonata, Summer Scent, etc. They painted characters that were impossible not to love, worlds that drew you in, tropes notwithstanding. Then there was a period when some originality was introduced: Coffee Prince, Goong, Kim Sam Soon come to mind readily.
Nowadays, the emphasis is on PPL, the lead actors taking showers or swims, adding an idol here and there to guarantee a built-in audience, i.e. gimmicks that have nothing to do with ensuring the quality of production. From the get-go, there is no sincerity on the part of the PD team. It's like their approach is:
"Let's just get a script, any damned script, however crappy, and start shooting, as long as we have enough sponsors and pretty faces, and hope the audience won't notice the lack of quality thru out. Throw in a piggyback ride, a stare, a kiss and they'll swoon and be satisfied. If not, too bad, we'll take our money and run. On to the next project/scam."
Yes, I feel insulted, totally insulted, cheated and scammed out of my time, my expectation, my enjoyable, and my emotions. You feel for sb for 3-4 eps, or worse more, and then find out that it's not possible to go on believing them. Cheated!!

Don't a number of PD's actually lose money or barely break even? If they can't survive doing quality dramas...
So it comes back to viewers. Who are watching? Who are the worst critics? Who are the most ardent supporters? Whom do you listen to? The fact that data stream can be analyzed and the way kdrama production seems to be able to quickly adapt may actually be detrimental to quality writing/production throughout a series run?

@Susan,
I don't think it pays to say any of these things or any other things critical on a live thread of an ongoing drama. There will always be some viewers who may be head over heels with the lead actor or actress, or are loving the show too much to want to hear sb evaluating it rationally. I once got my head bitten off for critiquing the script of Cheongdamdong Alice by Moon Gun Young's very young fangirls. It felt surreal, but such 'teenage" mentality exists. They are not interested in meaningful dialogue. Their hair is on fire, and if not, they want to set fire to yours.
DB is pretty good that there is a community of grownups who do discuss with a sense of engagement. But it only takes a few hotheads to ruin the experience of a post.
Once upon a time, I was urged to start a blog on KDs, but that time has passed, and honestly I no longer feel it worth my time or effort.
Hope to run into you more often. Cheers.

"Well I know the entire story is about the monster, but I just wanted to check if the psychopath part gets better or not? Otherwise I think I would find it difficult to watch."
It depends on what you mean by "gets better"... If you mean...
1) Do they commit more mysterious murders and give us a chance to solve them? The answer is 'No', not just before and after their identities are revealed.
2) Do they ever stop being psychopaths? The answer is no, but they do stop killing, as far as we can tell. They cannot understand why killing is wrong, but they can decide to do 'what's right' according to societal laws and the preference of their friends/family.
3) Do they become warm and sweet? Again hard to say, since they can behave warmly and are charming ... but what was warm and sweet was that even a psychopath needs a sense of belonging to his family, loves his brother, is willing to 'change' for the better so that his brother will not have a hard time.
So... what did you mean by "gets better"? Did your question get answered? :)

And about your question(I am not good at expressing my feelings through writing so I hope I convey my point) @Susan, I remember one of my teachers saying this that there are only 4 existing themes: Rich guy, poor girl Poor guy, rich girl 1 guy two girls, 1 girl two guys. The other theme is created. I think he talked about only the romance genre but I believe the theory applies to every genre. Through one show or the other we come across the main theme repeatedly in every genre. For mystery and thriller it usually includes the serial killer, homicidal maniac themes. However all of them coming at once might be a coincidence or I guess they are unable to make/create the next theme which does not exist and thus requires a little more effort.

@KoreanDrama
About Romances
Hmmmm interesting... I looked up romance tropes and I believe (without actually counting) there are more than 300 kinds of tropes to do with romances. Just a few egs.: What guys/girls like in the opposite sex cliches, high school sweethearts/first loves, friendship vs dating, getting back together with an ex, false starts and lies that become true love, ... etc etc.
As in all stories the tension in the romance has to come either from the couple themselves (bad personalities that get tamed, lack of communication, lying and deceit) and/or external forces (parents, ex-girlfriends/boyfriends) and/or other tropes like birth secrets, disease, death, amnesia, forced separation....
That we can come up with so many nice romances (together with so many bummers) just by recycling the same themes and tropes is testament to human creativity LOL!
Nowadays, I find that we (the international audience anyway) applaud best those romances where the couple is most believably natural in how they get on as friends and advance in skinship, communicate well and quickly, and avoid noble idiocy like the plague. :D

Long-time professional movie/TV critics often disagree greatly about a movie/TV.
What if some people genuinely believe the second writer actually made SWWTN better because it was a mess from the beginning? They may not express their position for lack of experience/training.
SWWTN didn't grab me from the beginning. The pretty I could take or leave. I'm mostly curious about how this spin on vampire lore will turn out.
Vampire kdramas this year haven't done well collectively. I wouldn't be surprised there is a growing vampire-fatigue/ennui.

Yup, it sounded to me like some really did think that the 1st writer's work was not good and that they liked the way things started moving with the 2nd writer. To them, it did not appear as a lack of integrity but rather an improvement or cleaning up of a bad job. However just because many people like the change in writing, does not invalidate the main point in that what was laid out was ignored and that ratings dropped.
I'm surprised that vampire ennui does not kick in/did not kick in long ago!!! I'm not a particular fan of the genre although I may not mind watching a show or two. I have not yet tried the Vampire Prosecutor shows, the first of which I fancy is justifiably lauded while there are mixed feelings about the second.
Needless to say, Blood was a disappointment.

I'll come back to this later, too. The first writer definitely had plotting problems. No question. Her work was not for everyone. However, an audience that liked her style settled in and ratings were flat. Once the new writer came on board, audience share fell for SWWTN. It's difficult to pick up audience at the 5 week mark - so the change could only retain aud or lose aud. In this case, it lost aud. Not surprisingly as the tone of the drama changed so significantly. I might like steak, but if I go to the ice cream store for ice cream, I might stop going if they become a steak house.

I was confused as how to compare steak and ice cream. Then it came to me, preference vs quality! There are different grades of steak. Grading goes for ice cream. A lot of people love both, ignoring grading. Steakhouses often have ice cream and/or fried ice cream as desserts.
Sometimes preference can infer quality and vice versa. Other times, no.
The drop in SWWTN ratings can be attributed to some viewers not liking what the show has become since the adding the new writer. Do these audiences' preference mean better quality?
Ultimately, having one person shoulder all or almost all the blame (in this case, drop in ratings) for a collaborative work is a lot. I would like to find out how much he deserved it.

August 25, 2015 at 6:26 PM
Hi @Snickers and Susan
I'm just trying to iron out the points here:
1) I come to a show wanting funny-cute then after a few episodes it turns makjang. I can choose to watch makjang but I may not choose to watch it in the show that I wanted funny-cute. (Susan's steak and ice-cream analogy). People may leave but no new viewers are gained since we're in the middle of the series.
2) I watch a show that starts out good and which suits my funny-cute preference. It changes to good makjang. The show becomes different from what I expected but I like the good makjang it has become, so I stick with it (@Snickers quality over quantity analogy).
What is being posited: There are many reasons for a drop in viewership but over time and taken across many instances, the likelihood that the change in writing affected viewership of shows is greater than any other reason.
In a drama collaboration, most of what the production teams decide and do seem to hinge on what is written. It seems to me from reading comments all over so this is not at all the results of a controlled experiment...
Very good writing plagued with bad direction, acting, music still gives a show an acceptable story to follow. People who came in accepting the lousy direction, acting etc will continue for the story.
Writing which was A and became B, whether the quality of B is good or bad, even with good direction, acting etc is more likely to lose some people who came in for A. I read that people say they loved the actors but even they could not save the show for them.
I presume there must have been properly run surveys by now on why people watch or drop shows? Do these bear out any of the points here?

3) Fear of Missing Out or herding: A new show comes along that everyone seems to love. It is at the same time as my current show which I like but not love. Maybe I'll watch the new one when it airs to be part of ___, then watch my current show later.
4) I gave this show __ episodes. It's still meh. I'm out.
Getting quality responses from surveys are not easy.
JB and GF's interview with City Hunter PD was instructive. While the drama shooting is ongoing: PD's vision can drive the drama and change its flow/direction. PD and writer can agree on the general direction and processes. PD acquiesces to the writer when they disagree.

Moral and ethical dilemmas raised in Blood kept my mind working overtime. Rationalizing that ambiguous ending was interesting.
Didn't go near Orange Marmalade for two reasons: Yeo Jin Goo and high school. Either one is an ⛔absolutely not⛔ for me.

Summarize possible factors:
1) Another writer messed up parts of the drama. He started at ep. 11.
2) Yong-pal started at SWWTN ep 8. Its ratings steadily grew from average of 11% to 20%. That means now on average 1 in 6 people are watching (not 1 in 5 because I'm not assuming 100% of SK population is TV audience). SWWTN AGB Seoul: ep8 7.8, ep9 8.6, ep10 7.4, ep11 6.8, ep12 7.1, ep13 7.3, ep14 NA.
2a) Lets say you are settled in with SWWTN, but not all that crazy about it. Seems like many people you know are watching Yong-pal. Apparently people now want to chat while they watch a show separately. (There were a few attempts by Healer Beanies to rewatch Healer simultaneously across the time-zones so they can spazz together in the Healer recaps. Also, there was talk of somehow watching JCW's upcoming movie together.) Do you have FOMO? Even if you don't, do you re-prioritize anyway?
2b) Similar to 3, replace re-prioritize with drop.
Can we say for certain that 1) is the main cause, >50% of the decline in ratings? 1.2% drop occurred between ep 9 and 10, before the new writer started.
How about lag time? Would the ratings drop immediately at ep11 or would people wait and see, "sunk cost" and all?
Ep. 14 is the first episode not ranked across the board, i.e. not in the top 20 at all. That day North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire. What were the ratings of the 20th ranked show(s)?
I wish Assembly's ratings were high enough to be in the top 20. Assuming its quality has stayed pretty consistent, seeing its ratings trend may help demonstrate the strength of Yong-pal effect.

Apologies.
First, averaging Yong-pal's ratings. Nationwide includes Seoul, right?
Second, Using only SWWTN AGB Seoul ratings. Only 3 times so far SWWTN ranked in TNmS Nationwide top 20.
Please forgive the quick-and-dirty math for showing trends.

Guys I have a question. Do you think that if the main themes used in a story are repeated in another story that would not count as plagiarism? For e.g the very common multiple personality disorder story where the patient falls in love with the doctor whose treating him/her. Or usually the revenge stories have the same basic theme. I believe there are many shows/movies around the world with the same concept. So does it really not matter if the main concept of a story is somewhat similar to another story but the other elements and the progress of the story is different?

Hi @KoreanDrama
I believe it is best that you draw out the answer from what you know and think already. In the first place, how will you define plagiarism?
Do themes and concepts used repeatedly constitute plagiarism?
How to account for the same stories retold around the world?

Soooo..... tired.... but I can answer this.
IP is only protected in the instance. So, if you want to make another vampire drama with vegetarian vampires, you're perfectly okay. But if you want to have characters that are substantially the same as Edward and Bella, then you've committed plagiarism and can be sued.

Okay - now that I'm awake (12 hours sleep) let me explain about intellectual property (IP) a little.
You cannot protect ideas! Ever seen two dramas with nearly the same premise? Kill Me, Heal Me and Hyde, Jekyll & Me both had the same premise. No problem. Because only the idea was the same. The implementation (instance) was substantially different. Different characters, different locations, different plot for the most part.
Where you run into trouble is when two instances are substantially similar. When the characters are nearly alike or the plot is nearly the same.....

Hi Susan, I'm glad you managed to get the sleep you needed. I feel I'm needing more sleep too. I can feel the flu coming on when I don't have enough rest.
I was hoping to avoid a meeting but it looks like it's been replaced with another one! I think I'll sleep earlier today so that I don't zombie out in front of my clients. :)

Oh dear, the article on Park Shi Hoo is not pretty at all. All the expected positions are taken up and there's really nothing more to say. Perhaps for some articles, it would be good to turn off the comments section.

Ah! Moral outrage!
This is a very good topic for a thread.
So, who are actors who you liked very much at one point , but just can't watch now bc something they did turned you off so much that when you seen them on screen you can't get into the film/show/performance - all you can see is is the person whose actions disgusted you.
I'll start: Russell Crowe, Bill Cosby, Mel Gibson (Weird that I have no women....)
But what makes this fascinating - is who are people whose actions bother a lot of people but not you?
More: Woody Allen, Roman Polanski (Also weird, why isn't there anyone young on my list??)
So, what makes us revulsed for only some people? What makes us care at all? I mean, what does someone's personal life have to do with their job?

I've not been keeping up with news or scandals on entertainment news, but I noticed a bit. I am saddened that Bill Cosby whom I enjoyed watching years ago is no longer a person I can respect.
Much as I'd like to say that we should separate the person from his job, emotionally that's a tall order, for those whose jobs take them into the public eye or lay on them special authority and responsibility.
When a person's job is to act, he can succeed only when the audience can be convinced by the character he portrays. I need to be immersed in the story most of the time to enjoy it, but knowing that the person I'm watching has done horrible things distracts me from fully being immersed or convinced. Instead of seeing the character, I end up seeing him the person. It's going to take a lot of persistence, sincerity and convincing the audience that he has turned over a new leaf, before such an actor can regain enough standing with some of his audience. Some of them will never come around.
Perhaps in other jobs, it will be easier to give a person another chance, since their jobs do not need them to be so in once's face, and conversely therefore, it will not easy for actors.
I can't think of anyone that many people are bothered by, while I'm not. It will more often be the case that I don't like an actor (for no logical reason) while others do. *yawn* Catch you later.

Following up on "But what makes this fascinating – is who are people whose actions bother a lot of people but not you?"
The reason I can't think of any is perhaps because I want to see for myself if what many people are saying is true. Even for the Park Shi Hoo case, at this stage, I cannot tell if I will watch or not watch the show. I'm guessing that I'll not be able to separate him from his character... if so, my enjoyment of the show will be affected. Then again, if the story is very engaging and I like the other characters and get invested in the show, I may watch it even with PSH in it. People or I am so complicated and I change all the time. I often wonder if I'm contradicting myself or sounding like a hypocrite. :)

You sound very human. We tend to filter out most peoples' behavior unless if affects us directly. Sometimes, though, a person has done something that really resonates with us - something that we can't ignore because it taps into a deep-seated loathing for that particular behavior. And, thus, we can't overlook those actions. And bc actors have a face that is known to us, we can't enjoy their work without being aware of them and, by association, their behavior. So, we avoid their work. Very human.
