I think you misunderstood. NIF does end with Su's death. We were given a brief false hope that Lin Chen could keep him alive longer than expected but when Su decided to lead the army into war, his death became a done deal.

However, there will be a "season 2" which is actually a prequel.

Aah! so we look forward to his death! LOL!

BTW, the first guy who treated Su in Episode 1, that is not Lin Chen... he never reappeared? He said something like he was just keeping Su alive a bit longer and asked him how long he wanted to live... and Su said 2 years would be enough. The reply was, yes, 2 years was do-able. I thought we'd see him again. He looked more intriguing with that one sided fringe hairstyle.

@marybethany's new comment at Healer ep 20 recap mentioned that YSH in Remember is looking like Healer. The disguise itself is similar to what we see in Healer but much more Park Bong Soo (without the adorkable) and much less Healer.

Finished The Myth with a lot of skipping. Hu Ge's character waited over 2,000 years to reunite with his one true love. She died shortly after. He ended up all alone.

I watched three Hu Ge dramas: his character either ended up all alone or dead. He must have an affinity for dramas that torment the character he plays.

I'm in the minority, but I feel actively participating and experiencing historical events is much more interesting than the love story.

At the rate that the romance plot plays out, the question is, what love story?

Not enough development or OTP time together, I wonder why they bother to have a romance-like bit to the plot at all.

I just wonder why, unless it's meant to go somewhere, there should be any romance at all. I guess it's to satisfy the romance lovers or to give the characters a more 'human / personable' touch. This can also be shown with bromance or other relationships though.

Does the couple relationship help to develop the character or plot at all, is the other question.

I would like pieces of plot that come up in shows, to make sense in the story or character development, or not be used at all.

I'm rethinking my approaches to storytelling... I've really been thinking about what draws in a female audience - and what grows a male / female audience. I'm really interested in your opinions, too.

So, here's my first posit: A love story can't sustain itself. A Kdrama (for example) can only sustain the pure romance without significant outside obstacle for maybe 4 -6 episodes. Then it loses steam. Best is when there's an outside obstacle the entire time.

Here's my second posit: We all like adventure and action related conflict. Girls just like it with a dose of romance in the middle. These shows (Healer) seem to hold our attention longer than just drama.

Third posit: Politics are boring. Whether it's Mask or The Three Musketeers or Oh My Venus the politics are only interesting in how they drives the characters and the situations they're in. Too much chat chat about politics this and chaebol that and we cease to care.

Fourth posit: Our favorite shows have an internal logic - City Hunter, Healer, Two Weeks, 3 Days, Pinocchio, The Return of Iljimae, My Love from A Star.... every single one has some internal conflict that has nothing special to do with outside factors. We're made to care about the characters' issues rather than larger societal ones (or tropes like chaebol anything.)

Okay, girls, thoughts? I'm hoping this turns into a long discussion.

For a longer discussion and more ideas from people who are more into this, you should bring this up in the latest OT. I'm not sure if many people are on vacation or not, but you might like to re-post this in next week's OT as last week's OT did not have that many comments (and I'm guessing, commenters). Maybe the celebrations have distracted our usual crowd away from the OT.

"..rethinking my approaches to storytelling" - which means you had a different approach and are considering changing the approach now?

1)"A love story can’t sustain itself." - Yes, that's true. The chase and wooing is the thrill of the romance, the getting the partner is the resolution to that chase. If nothing adds conflict to this, it gets boring and old. What else but a couple talking and arguing and hanging out?

As for an 'outside obstacle' - well other than shows where the fighting between the couple is the main focus, yes, I'd prefer outside obstacles that are not contrived but that organically crop up to threaten the romance or test it. However, we also want a quick resolution and not a long-drawn out fight or the silent idiocy treatment. I recall how since Healer days, we keep praising shows with writing that has misunderstandings quickly talked through between the OTP and resolved.

2) "We all like adventure and action related conflict." - Yes definitely. We want our hero and/or heroine to be doing something exciting/scary/mysterious/criminal or be great sleuths and to take us on the ride with them. Like we said in 1) just the romance is boring.

3) "Politics are boring." - The time I did not mind politics, and I mean politics in terms of political parties/parliament or whatever they call it... was in "All About My Love". Yes, it was a romance focused show with political action driving the couple together and also affecting their relationship. I liked that show a lot and that's where I watched and liked Shin Ha Kyun. He was somehow mesmerizing. I did so many screenshots of him in that show. I'm over him now but yes, just the politics of business or power play or crime bosses cannot hold us for long. The Chinese Drama, Nirvana in Fire is so losing me because of loooooong chats about politics and intrigue. Just show me and don't talk about it.

4) "Our favorite shows have an internal logic" ... "We’re made to care about the characters’ issues rather than larger societal ones..." - I believe that the internal logic is crucial and has to be something we can understand although we don't necessarily face the situation that the main characters do.

I find though, that many of us commenters also like that the story questions or comments on big topics or on society, for eg...on issues like 'What makes a monster?' in I Remember You. The show may not give us solutions to societal problems, but it should deal with it realistically. Ultimately of course, we want to be able to root for a hero or heroine-like figure(s) who go through...

problems and succeed despite their flaws and external obstacles, and who of course grow in the process.

We want our characters to be round, well-fleshed out and more than just a few as far as possible, and we want to feel with them and support them/commiserate with/condemn them and even identify with them if we can.

When we are totally drawn into their story, it's like they are our neighbours and it's almost our stories too. This was one of the comments that we shared in Healer. We felt we knew them so well that we could imagine them in Coffeebay or in Healer's lair and what they'd be doing or saying.

Best of all is if the story can give the bad guys redemption and bring most characters together as a community with lots of camaraderie. This is the ideal situation in RL, and we'd love to see it in our shows.

@ Susan ?????

I will need to watch quite a few in order to give you my thoughts on them, and since I haven't, I do not know.

I will say that the few Taiwanese rom-coms or melo-roms I watched were super tropey. Maybe it was the luck of the draw or those are the kinds of shows Taiwan made/makes? but it was practically guaranteed we'd get the arrogant guy/girl and forced togeherness, piggy back ride, the fall down and be caught, the through airport/hospital run in desperation or both, the being sick and cared for, accidental nekkidness, often the noble idiocy of guy being mean in order to break off,... etc, etc. What I disliked was that with nothing much else, these shows were pretty long. They would throw in at intervals, difficult parents, mean friends and ex-bf/gfs, disease, going abroad, accidents... the usual contrived separations to lengthen the lot.

They were OK for a few laughs, but got old very quickly. I used to like Rainie Yang. She had pretty great comic timing and can sing.

I didn't even feel emotionally invested in NIF until middle of ep 49. This is probably one of the few times when I truly felt for a character, and his choices and actions. It's not a bad thing, just rare for me.

Bu Bu Jing Xin/Scarlet Heart

It's an easy watch. After ep 11, it moves along pretty well, very few draggy parts.

Because she met many of the princes early and they all have favorable opinions of her, her life inside the palace has been a breeze- no fights, no setups, no beatings, no poison.

I'm indifferent to the love triangle between Prince #4, the heroine and Prince #8. Put it another way, I don't care about the focus of this drama.

The competitions for Crown Prince position feels like children's games after watching NIF.

Prince #10 is likable- not smart but sincere. My favorite prince is #13 who is unorthodox and open-minded, a good mix of traditional and modern mindset. Both are the heroine's buddies.

Both this drama and The Myth are time-traveling stories with the main characters actually knowing a good deal of the historical periods they are in. How convenient!

I'm wondering how the Korean adaptation will work.

All adult Qing princes must actively participate in the court. Doesn't seem that way for any Joseon prince who were not the crown prince. Moon Lover is set in Goryeo. Perhaps Goryeo princes could participate in government and politics.

By the time the heroine showed up, many of the Qing princes had at least a wife, and some had concubines. This of course complicates the matter for the heroine. On the other hand, seems like only a Korean king could marry more than one woman.

I don't recall seeing any romantic trope in Bu Bu Jing Xin/Scarlet Heart yet. Kdramas like their romantic tropes, don't they?

Do you think this will ever get subbed? I will not get more than the gist of it otherwise.

Anyway, I'm still undecided about continuing with NIF and I have not much time nowadays. I'll have to be careful in what I choose to watch and probably will watch only intermittently, long series like NIF.

You are wondering how the Korean adaptation will work - is that because most of the action is in the active court participation?

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm only seeing the raw version. I think all the English subbed versions online were taken down due to copyright violations.

Because the heroine is stuck living and working in the palace, and all the princes go to court almost daily, things are happening in the palace or around the emperor. A few of the princes have taken to stop by her residence in the palace to drink tea.

If the princes can't hang out in the palace in the Korean adaptation, it will be very inconvenient for all involved.

One of the characters is a serial philanderer who fathered 5 to 6 illegitimate daughters. About half of them falls in love with his son, while his son falls in love with one of his other 3 half-sisters. Eventually it is revealed that his son is actually the progeny of another man whom his wife slept with as revenge. It seems logical that given this philanderer fathered so many daughters, his son might not be his ?

I forgot to mention that the girl in Splash Splash Love was assumed to be a boy, and she thought it was just as well, in the Joseon era to continue with that charade. Maybe some version of this might play out for Bromance, since they will have to be close to be 'brothers'?

The show where cross-dressing was so ineffectual to me, and I could not believe that people could not see that Park Shin Hye was a girl, was in You're Beautiful. Ridiculous stuff! She was masquerading as her brother who's way bigger and taller than her and when he finally 'appeared' at the end, it amazed me that no one remarked on the difference in size.

I guess if they can layer on the clothes and don't wear them too tight, they can get away with the 'boy' look. But if you're saying they do that for years, it's hard to believe.

Just checked out the first 19 minutes of Bromance.

"His" hips are not hiding well. Forearms aren't "manly" either. Of course, no one notices the lack of Adam's apple on a skinny 25-year old man.

No voice dubbing. The enunciation of actors and actresses sounds somewhat unclear, kind of like they are mumbling to themselves most of the time.

Given that I was already yelling at the screen, I don't feel I want to continue watching.

Latest Moon Lover casting news.

http://www.allkpop.com/article/2016/01/moon-lovers-secures-its-flower-boy-cast-of-exos-baekhyun-kang-ha-neul-hong-jong-hyun-nam-joo-hyuk-and-ji-soo

Hong Jong Hyun plays Prince #3. I'm about half-way through with the cdrama. #3 showed up only briefly. Unless the Korean version changes things up, Hong Jong Hyun will be totally underused while idol actors will have much more screen time as #10, 13 and 14.

Your post made me double check on the identity of Jong Hyun. I was mixing him up with Lee Jong Hyun of the band, CN Blue, and I thought that Hong Jong Hyun was the idol. But I see that he's an actor/model and the other person, Lee Jong Hyun is the band member and the one who acted in Orange Marmalade.

I find it strange that Korea seems to cast according to some other rules. The aim seems to be to give the young idols more exposure regardless of who's the best actor for the role. At one time for shows like Heartstrings and You're Beautifull, I took it for granted that singers were acceptable, because there was music in the show, however they even cast actors who can't sing all that well in them, so I'm ?????

I don't hear of casting auditions but of individuals chosen and offered roles. If they accept, they get it, and that's about that... until someone quits or gets fired (which hardly happens). This probably explains why we get so many shows with people in them who are not suitable as actors.

It does sound like the kdrama version story lines and characters will be somewhat different from the cdrama version which is not quite the same as the book.

The princes are supposed to be numbered chronologically by age. Hong Jong Hyun's (#3) actual age is 25, while Lee Jun Ki (#4) is 33. Cast of cdrama princes confused me a little. Cast of kdrama princes won't be different either.

I'm guessing inexperienced/unknown SK actors must audition while well-known idols get offers. Even the agencies know idols can't be idols forever.

So far, the kdrama princes appear to be collectively "prettier" than cdrama princes. Given the cdrama is only so-so for me, "pretty," tighter pacing and right chemistry may keep me from skipping large sections.

"General" observations on cdrama and kdrama main female characters, based on relatively small sample sizes. I'm aware of the antithetical nature of the above.

Cdramas: She is highly intelligent, unyielding and competent. She uses sincerity and intelligence, instead of pity, to win over people. Exhibition of spunkiness can be persistent or strategic.

Kdramas: She may be intelligent but often just average, indecisive, and ineffectual/incompetent (until the plot suddenly needs her to be competent). She is either domineering or pitiful. Exhibition of spunkiness is more random. More damsel-in-distress incidents.

Yes, kdramas are more inconsistently consistent with the way they treat their "heroines."

However, Scarlet Heart's heroine also became feeble, weak-minded, and border-line pathetic soon after she got the man she wanted. Maybe women in their late 20's during that time period developed fast mental decline. Suddenly I felt like I was watching a kdrama.

0

Required fields are marked *

I have no idea. In this case, the heroine's man became the emperor, who was more capable than she and who must be feared and respected. She didn't become stupid to bolster his self-confidence.

The main problem I see was her trying to change major events in history because she couldn't bear to see such events hurt the people she cared about. Apparently, she didn't watch enough sci-fi in contemporary life to know that major historical events can't be changed. What happened would have happened with or without her. Obviously, she turned into "history's" instrument and became unhappy, which led to more (historical) events, which led to her blame herself excessively, resulting in a vicious cycle that included "non-historical" collateral damages. I suppose in order to the show to go on, the heroine must not learn the lesson of non-interference.

0

I'm thinking that the second we get a time travel or rather a go-back-into-history time travel story, the premise must include the fact that the time traveler meddles with the past for whatever reason. To have a time traveler go back to just look around and leave without leaving a sizeable mark kind of negates the need to have the go back in time thing.

I like the unspoken questions of time travel shows ie 'Will traveler change much and what if he/she did?' 'Will traveler manage to get back to own time?' And 'will traveler prefer to remain in the past?'

0

Messing with marginal stuff tends to be ok because there might be some flexibility in many "little" things. If you choose to meddle with major events, you become an instigator who will suffer whether history can be changed or not. In any case, later on don't mope around all day regretting everything.

0

In the Tdramas and Cdramas that I've watched, the woman is hardheaded and the man is kind and considerate. Through the man's patience and love, she becomes warm and loving. This allows a good couple to be made.

Kdramas are simply more realistic when it comes to gender roles. You may wish that all women were kick as*s confident people, but that's really very few women in real life. You may wish men were gentlemen, rather than spoiled brats, but there are very few men like that in real life.

I should probably write this in the OT, rather than here, but there's no such thing as 'noble idiocy'. There are characters who make metaphorical self-sacrificing choices that are consistent with both their personalities and the societal norms in which they live. And, you know what? This mirrors the self-sacrifices that people make every day. Only we don't call it self-sacrifice or noble idiocy - we call it it 'lack of courage'. People get scared and insecure, and they sacrifice what they really want in life rather than facing the difficulties or asking someone they love to make a sacrifice. It's downright common. Everyone does it.

From a literary and artistic point of view, self-sacrifice has a grand tradition. Can you imagine Romeo and Juliet without the death scene at the end? Or Othello without Desdemona's loving death? Or perhaps a modern perspective? Where would Twilight or Harry Potter be without the main characters self-sacrifice? How about any war movie? Etc, etc.

And do you really want to watch every Kdrama where the heroine is strong and the hero is a gentleman? We have a word for that in production: BORING!! It's the many many flaws and the things we recognize in ourselves that endear characters to us. You won't find yourself in every character, but there should be characters for everyone! :-)

Thus endeth my screed on why there is no such thing as "Noble Idiocy", just "Recapper Idiocy".

@ Susan ?????

Certainly RL is full of self-sacrifice and of people who bear it quietly. Reply 1988 does it quite well and more true to RL and only has the more dramatic version of it among the young people.

===
I'm thinking of drama's version of 'noble' being based on the idea that Char A thinks he's being nice at withholding information and making a choice that is difficult in order to save Char B from some pain.

'Idiocy' stems from the fact that it was not necessary and probably could have and should have backfired on Char A.

From the narrow perspective of tdrama and kdrama watching, what I consider immature, stupid and mean are the times Character A deliberately hurts Char. B just so that when Char A disappears, Char B will be so over them. Not noble. Just hurtful and idiotic and nothing heroic about it.

The aspect of Char A not telling something to Char B which could have enabled Char B to make an informed choice (to be risk-taking or a coward) piles on the immaturity factor and shows up Char A as being distrustful, mean-spirited and/or not thinking well enough of Char B's ability to think wisely.

There's also the element of foolishness in forgetting that it's in life's ups and downs that characters gain resilience, compassion, empathy and become better. I fancy that the selfishness in this tainted 'self-sacrifice' is more that, Char A knows Char B may suffer, but does not want it to be said he suffered because of Char A's illness/parents/past etc etc. Instead, let him suffer mightily at Char a's hands when he deliberately hurts B to 'protect' him, so that he would feel less pain over said illness/parents/past. That is supposed to make it all 'noble'.

That's the idiocy that I've been seeing in shows and which I deplore!

By all means, the well-done great heart-wrenching conflicts and sacrifices elevate a nothing-much show into an epic.

I'm thinking about Harry Potter which I can at least remember better... he goes off knowing he'll probably get killed and so not to upset his friends and to avoid them trying to stop him, he does that without telling them (nobility with idiocy?). Since his vision is for the overall and wider good, his friends' narrow concern for just him alone is going to be a stumbling block. Therefore it does not appear idiotic, just good common sense.

Self-sacrifice should by all means be included in shows and they need not be idiotic but they have to at least appear noble.

But that's my point - Harry Potter's actions are neither noble nor idiotic. He just can't think of another solution. It seems like a grand gesture, but it's just the fumbling of a young boy. :-) And that's why it's real. 'Noble idiocy' is a made up term to describe real choices by real characters that could have been better but aren't bc those characters mirror real people who also make less than optimal choices.

We're not all noble and we're not all idiots, we're just muddling through. And so are the characters.

Self-sacrifice for the greater good is often a theme in cdramas. I wonder how common, necessary or not, is self-sacrifice in romantic relationships. I think one's reasons, approach and outcome differentiate between a noble self-sacrifice and noble idiocy.

Romeo and Juliet didn't die because death was the best way to help anyone. They died because they could not bear living without the other. Neither noble self-sacrifice nor noble idiocy in my opinion, simply two kids killing themselves over a misunderstanding. For me, with certain specific exceptions, the effects of a death on the living have more emotional impact.

Watching several saguek cdramas, I've heard many times the phrase roughly translated as "Although we could not be born together, we hope to die together." If everyone who swore by this rashly carried it out, the body count would be much higher resulting in more widows, orphans, broken hearts and chaos.

Baaahhhh! If there's one giant disservice Dramabeans has introduced to the world it's the term 'noble idiocy'. It's just not real!!!

You make the point with R&J. There's self sacrifice (which is exactly the kind of thing DB refers to as noble idiocy - which will forever more be known as recapper idiocy). But that self sacrifice comes from heightened emotions and an inability to imagine a longer life with other happiness. At 14, this is normal.

Drama takes ordinary things and heightens it. :-) It's a way to examine our hearts.

I take self-sacrifice to be closely associated with altruism and defined as

the giving up of one's own interests or wishes in order to help others or to advance a cause

Thus, for me, R&J killing themselves doesn't fit because they didn't do so for the benefit of anyone or anything else. The unintended consequence of ending the family feud doesn't make their deaths self-sacrifices.

Depending on the circumstance, methods and outcome, if my reaction is bewilderment and/or "WTH! You are an idiot!" to a character's unilateral "self-sacrificing" action for what he/she thinks is the best for other in a romantic relationship, I'm calling it noble idiocy.

It's not easy for me to care about romantic relationships. My concern must be earned. Thus, when one person in a couple abruptly ends the relationship in a mean/cruel way thinking such choice is the best for the other person without having enough respect for the other person for a mature discussion, I don't see why I should care about this person and the relationship. Generally a normal functioning adult doesn't like other someone else making important choices/decisions for him/her without at least being informed first.

0

Self-sacrifice and altruism aren't the same thing. Altruism is generosity to others. Self-sacrifice is made to prevent harm to others or to honor a cause (hence R&J and the sacrifice made for love - remember, people believed they would be together in the after life).

0

Full Definition of altruism

1 : unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others
2 : behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species

Altruism is definitely more than being generous.

I highly highly recommend The Lost Tomb for the cheese factor! It's CDrama at its best. My favorite lines so far:

Young guy: "You can call me Mr. Fatty."
...
Another young guy: "Thank you for saving our lives Grandpa Fatty."
Young guy: "Come on, put it accurately. Call me Mr. Fatty, not Grandpa Fatty."
Other young guy: "Won't 'grandpa' sound more respectful?"

Ha!

It's full of clunky exposition and mythic characters. It's basically Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider meets K/C/J/T pop! :-) Love it!

I've been doing an eclectic mix of running about, trying to catch bits of the early episodes of Reply 1988 to scout out clues about the husband's identity (it has returned to the fore as the central focus) and the continuation of clearing out stuff. I was hoping it would be a therapeutic thing, the clearing out, I mean. Clearing physical space is often used as a reflection of clearing the head.

I also just remembered that I'm supposed to plan a schedule. But I think I'd rather sleep right now!

However, if my manager is the one who is too sick to attend, I wonder if I can just do a remote meeting like him. The preference though is probably for physical presence and not for video conferencing.

I tried another web drama, We Broke Up. Another simple premise of a couple in a shared house with the guy's other band members who break up but still end up living under the same roof.

It could have worked as well as One Sunny Day which was even simpler and managed the story very well, but it didn't really. Somehow the lead and second lead actors/actresses in We Broke Up just could not convey or convince with their portrayal of emotion. I looked them up... model, singer, singer-song writer... the only one not too bad was the 2nd lead male actor-model. On top of that the lead in to the ending was missing. I just did not feel right.

I watched the first episode. So far no clear indication if it's going to be just a 'teen' school show (with a tinge of magic?) or really go in deeper with character development. Different or interesting points in the show are how come the lights hovered and did not drop all the way at once or how the school is hidden in plain sight. (Reminded me of Hogwarts and Platform 9 n 3/4). I did not know there was supposed to be a supernatural element in the show.

If there are 4 brothers, unless the youngest one is still in junior high or middle school, or as a prodigy who entered high school early, the eldest must be shifted out of high school. Then what is JIW's character doing all day while the others are in school?

Someone commented that the novels have makjang elements. Will the drama's writer up the makjang?

Seems there might be 3 brothers and a personal guard of some sort? So that might be how we end up with 4 guys and a girl.

I'd love to be able to free-load off my rich granddad and not have to leave the house. I'd be watching shows and commenting on them forever LOL! Of course I'd probably suffer more ill health.

I believe that one of the reasons makjang grabs us is that we find it such a relief that we do not have to face the kind of challenges the characters do, and get to feel thankful even when we are not exactly in beds of roses. Also it's fun to try to predict what horrible thing is going to happen next and be proved right!

Most of the time I shake my head and sometimes FFD ... I don't like too much angst or melodrama.

Although Glamorous Temptation is not too makjang, I still find myself FFD-ing pretty much. But I'm still interested to know what will happen next and what twist is going to be repeated. If "You're the First" has that kind of makjang I can watch it, but it better not become too ridiculous!

0

I avoid makjang like I avoid children (or the plague), unless it is used for satirical purposes. Still too early to call I guess.

0

:-) Okay, that was a funny comment! Can I have details on your plague avoiding techniques? And also your plague victim spotting techniques!

0

Children and symptoms (which are similar to the common cold or flu) of the contagious type of plague are easy to spot. Here in winter, the chance of a child being sick with some kind of cold or flu is pretty good.

Given that I'm not accustomed to being friendly towards or humor children, I can easily avoid them. My sister's kids learned that first hand this past summer.

Moorim School - I watched Ep 2. At the moment it's still like a school drama but instead of sit-down-at-desks lessons, they have cookery, meditation and martial arts (so far). I wonder if the actors got a chance to train rigorously for the 'martial arts' scenes... so far, it does not look like it, but it was not too bad. The boys probably did do some training, etc.

At least Healer's parkour or the body double and/or the editing did a good job in looking convincing for most of the run and jump scenes.

I'd like to have more 'real' fights in the school. At least, some kind of 'fight' has started already, but it was truncated with the end of the show! I guess it will be a good step to clearing the air between the alpha males to begin with (or again maybe it won't work) ... however I trust that lots more will be solved, without physical blows in the future.

This drama is missing something that hooks me.

0

A lot of dramas are missing something these days. I'm wondering why. Did Korean viewing tastes change? Are Korean audiences happy with these new dramas? Is it only a phenomena where overseas viewers are disappointed? You know what we need? A forth person in our conversations. Someone who grew up in Korea, spent time somewhere English speaking for school, and is now back in Korea for work. I wonder where we can find said person. I bet we'd get a lot of insight that way. Eat Your Kimchi? Perhaps they have a friend we can seduce into our chat group....

0

No clue because I don't know what hooks me anyway. I just chalk it up to that vague elusive "mood."

I have noticed the marked increase of TV shows with superheros/people with supernatural abilities. Towards which I became indifferent several years ago.

0

@ Susan ?????

The Korean Beanies in our group are not stationed in Korea and they hardly come on to chat. So I don't know if we will be fortunate enough to even meet any Korea-situated Korean from here. There are a couple of people on the OT who are living in Korea now. They mentioned how they were watching the filming of some of the shows.

0

Strangely, given a choice of whether to watch Cheese or Moorim School, I chose Moorim School.

*** SPOILERS ***

Although I find that it seems to be kind of raw and inexpertly produced, or maybe inexpertly directed, and slow, I find I like it.

There is a kids' show flavour to it that reminds me of my childhood and adventure stories or kids learning how to get by on their own. This series looks set to be a self-discovery and coming-of-age show, with a great test for all kids (and faculty?) being laid out. It's cute that the kids are a mixture of mature and immature.

One theme seems to be who is qualified to be in Moorim, and the test will bring out this aspect probably.

Others are re-building trust and taking ownership of choices.

There's also the mystery of the Dean's past, Wang Chi An's past and the man in the hospital and why Shi Woo has that pendant.

Moon Lovers looks to be a far more complex than its cdrama predecessor, and a stereotypical SK political saguek drama, with an ambitious, power-grabbing queen and more scheming women not featured than the cdrama.

One of Bu Bu Jing Xin/Scarlet Heart's redeeming factor is that the princes, except for one, acknowledging women should not be dragged into and become casualties of their power struggle. They and they alone should pay the price for losing. Collectively and individually they try to protect the heroine as much as possible. Thus, on certain matters, she can unite the factions. Her kdrama counterpart probably won't be so lucky.

Hits close to home in the family relationships and also makes one think of areas where one's own relationships could improve. I'd say, that a show that has managed that without being preachy or annoying and which has given us characters to 'love' even into a fictional future of theirs is to be applauded.

It's not exactly a show that I can re-watch though. There's a lot of emotion to be mined so it actually drains me and some episodes are almost 2 hours long!!! @ Snickers?

There was a shipping debate since very early on, but I did not really notice a war. At least, I did not come across nasty comments, just hopes and dreams and screams of frustration (at the show).

Commenters wanted to guess who the husband would be (it seems this is the norm in the Reply franchise. I didn't know since I did not watch the others in the Reply series). The show trolled us back and forth between 2 very good guys.

If you are talking about the last 2 episode's comment count, then it was due to the fact that we found out who the husband was in Ep 19 and in Ep 20 after we had been so primed to expect something for the other guy, (from whose point-of-view much of the romance was filmed), we found to our dismay that he hardly got any screen time and was left out pretty much from the future of the husband and wife. It was quite shocking!!! LOL!

Most wanted to see all the kids, grown up and married or whatever and even to see their parents, but we only had that one couple in focus with just her sister and brother on the side and a voice cameo for the sister's husband. Quite sad to end with just the 2 characters after 20 episodes of seeing a whole ensemble of 'people' we had come to care for.

Cheese in the Trap - Lately I have little desire to comment on the recap thread. I'd rather just post here quietly.

***SPOILERS***

It requires a lot of thinking and wondering in order to 'enjoy' the show. Motives are the things in question all the time. At least now Jung is given a voice-over for his thoughts. Previously we only had Seol's thoughts and had to infer everything else from behavior... and found ourselves often stumped.

One thing good... the romance turns some of the tropes around. For eg Girl does not like to be touched by the boyfriend (strange?) but does not seem to notice or mind other guys who touch her unconsciously. Or she is afraid to touch and be touched, or she has trust issues... probably something of the latter when it comes to the boyfriend. Girl appears to be a wimp but suddenly does vocalise her questions and protest. Guy appears distant and indifferent and yet tries to 'learn' how to be a boyfriend. Many mixed signals and challenges in interpreting what's going on. The viewers are having a grand time commenting on this.

My own feeling about the relationship is that Guy did not really care about Girl to begin with. He was playing her a bit because she did not 'like' him. He manipulated things to get her on his side and it was only after that, that he began to behave more like a boyfriend. He however cannot be said to have behaved like the typical man in love. All or most of those usual tropes are missing. Thus the puzzlement of the viewers.

Perhaps he does like her a little, but even that I feel has a selfish element to it. He manipulated things to get her nearby, it was to suit himself and most action that he takes does have that element of "me first" in it.

I took it for granted at first that Girl is the Cheese caught in a tight spot, and sometimes possibly could be used as bait. I've been wondering in the end if Guy is the one who set the trap or if he is the one being lured by the Cheese.

But my thoughts keep shifting.
When Guy wanted her to be his girlfriend, I had that ominous thought that she was entering a trap. Guy was both the bait and the trap...

Whatever it is, I feel that she is somewhat clueless and gets led or placed in positions where she cannot quite say no (or feels bad to) and that as the girlfriend, she might have given Guy too much power over her.

My first reaction still is, watch out and run for your life.

I'm somewhat surprised that many commenters are not all that disapproving of Guy's methods and that they feel they can understand him, or even empathise. Perhaps understanding why he does some things is possible, but the wrong-ness in his decisions, his hiding his motives and seeming duplicity bothers me. He seems to set himself up to be a god of some kind to mete our justice as if he's owed. I just don't trust that he has the best interests of other persons at heart at the moment. He appears cunning, and resentful and he really is unfeeling when it comes to the circumstances of others. The word someone used to describe him is Machiavellian which has some truth in it. He may become more enlightened in later episodes,... and then I'll re-assess.

If you mean "inappropriateness" on DB, then yes, that's possibly true. I don't read every recap and the comments that follow much anymore, and so I won't know for sure. 'Naughtiness' here is definitely not massive if at all!!!

WRT Healer: I believe it had something to do with the romantic scenes being quite many and so natural and very romantic, and with JCW looking very dashing. The Drool Pool was constantly filled and the comments got cheekier.

I admit I fanned the flames of fandom in terms of playing with those gals, but I did not encourage the more cheeky comments!

I believe that although DB seems quite prim, other sites like Soompi might still be hosting naughty posts and posters, for other shows besides Healer.

Cdrama The Little Fairy (2006). The side characters were loads of fun.

A guy whose family wealth came by in not so ethical and moral manner started out often being piggy-backed by one of his servants because he was too lazy. Still, he was a good person who never picked on the less fortunate, sincerely treated his friends, and helped out when needed. After his ill-gotten family fortune was lost and his "bad" father became unable to walk due to an illness, he piggy-backed his father everywhere.

A girl whose family wealth came by in extremely unethical and immoral manner seemed to be a typical arrogant bully who usually walked around with her chin held up abnormally high. Oddly, her bullying was one-time only. She never continued torturing anyone.

There are outtakes at the end of the final episode. Thus confirming Hu Ge's voice in his dramas is his own voice. However, he apparently uses another name as a voice actor. After this drama and Chinese Paladin, his left lateral incisor and canine teeth were "fixed." Strange to me that these teeth weren't fixed earlier.

"Oddly, her bullying was one-time only. She never continued torturing anyone." - This gets me thinking that the writer was not too sure of himself/herself and just started off one way and decided to change tack.

Do you know if most or all Chinese shows are pre-produced? Would they also be writing things halfway and then someone throws a spanner into the works while the show is airing?

If not the case, then it's like an inexperienced writer trying out things to see which should be kept and which should go and then forgetting to get rid of all of the parts that should go. Unless the arrogance or bullying was instrumental in something or other for the plot?

Cdramas are all preproduced as far as I know.

As for the girl, I think she was meant to have a simple and non-calculating temperament. She was content to show off her "beauty" and family wealth. Bullying was done spur of the moment. Then she pretty much figured it would be beneath her to deal with the little people.

It's hard to say about the writing of a cdrama. Unless it is adapted from a novel, it feels like adaptation from video games or comic books lacks strong focus and contain too much repetitive fillers.

I did think time passing and death of the main male character was handled pretty well. Every night he lit the lanterns in the ally for his love, the 7th daughter of the Jade Emperor, even though she was back in Heaven and they could not meet again in this lifetime. She looked for the light from lanterns "everyday." No clue how long passed in mortal time, one night the lanterns were dark and all the gods looked sad- I assume that he died. Some time later, the lanterns were lit again. I guess their son or grandchild continued with the tradition.

And the mythology is interesting in the sense that the Han Chinese had their own gods, deity hierarchy and Heaven while Persians had a separate one. (This was obviously a fact but usually fiction stays within a single realm of mythology.) Chinese gods had no jurisdiction over mortal Persians. Gods/heavens of other ethnicities were amused hearing Jade Emperor could not control his daughters ?

Mixed ethnicity mythological characters? That's a first for me! Sounds a bit like" Reply: the Heavenly Version" and we can have a neighbourhood of deities getting together over morning tea and complaining about their human subjects/family members. Not to mention a few Greek gods, hanging out to play board games with other deities, and who might try to move heroes around the realms as their pawns. Total chaos! LOL!

It is kind of interesting following his career backwards in time.

viki definitely doesn't have it.

0

Finished ep 4 to 20.

Most of the close contact between the OTP feels contrived.

Hilarious scenes tend to be between JIW's character and his assistant, with very close interpersonal contacts. The assistant apparently has a bit of a man-crush on JIW's character.

Jin Se Yeon's character frequently seems blank. I couldn't tell whether she had any internal conflict without her voice over. By ep 8 or 9, it's clear that she likes him, but something is missing. When JIW's character calmly and sincerely confesses his feelings for her, she's a total blank. Later as if she never heard his confession, she asks him how he feels about her. He says it again. And, again, nothing. Eventually, she tells him that she wasn't sure whether she trusted him.

I really have trouble watching people working in a restaurant not following basic health and safety guideline. First, no one ever washes their hands! Second, they keep working when they are sick! Excellent way to start an epidemic.

That was fast!

First I had trouble with the subs overlay over Chinese and could not read them well, and yes, on top of that the dialogue was so fast, I had to pause in order to read (1st ep only). Subsequently I watched bits of other episodes but was not drawn to watch more.

JSY was precisely as I've found her in every thing I've seen her... like you say, blank. A few commenters were wondering what powers her agent has that she is able to continually get main female roles, when she has never emoted or shown depth and range. But for a web drama like this, meant to be light, she was adequate.

JIW really should choose a good drama and good director and if fortunate, a good leading lady to act opposite.

I did notice that JSY doesn't seem to mind showing some skin, especially in magazine layouts.

Ah yes! It's hard for @Snickers and I to come to agreement about trying out a show. Madame Antoine it is!! I've no expectations of Sung Joon, which will probably help make him a tolerable watch. I like the look of Han Ye Seul, although I'm not entirely sure she's all that good an actress. When I watched her in Myungwol the Spy, I did so without any analytical lenses on and just thought she was cute.

I see that we have quit a few young actors joining this show. I feel like I'm going into it with talent hunting in mind! :)

Ah! I hadn't seriously looked at this one bc Sung Joon. He's just so inadequate. Han Ye Seul is a good actress - I saw her in Birth of a Beauty. Apparently she's also a bit of trouble on set - according to several articles, she was so difficult in the past that she had to take a break from her acting career for a while.

I'll give it a skim. If it's not bad, I'll watch it in parts.

The show I want to pick up is Neighborhood's Hero. If that's good, I'm going to watch it.

With the cast line-up for Cinderella and the Four Knights, I do not feel overly inspired to watch, but it will probably be curiosity that gets me to try. We spoke on this show and about the possibility of makjang elements. Well, in order to know how far that's true, we will have to watch or read the recaps (assuming it's recapped).

It's another JIW outing, but he's not been too selective about his shows, therefore I'm neutral about him being in it. I think the presence of Anh Jae Hyun, gets more of a reaction out of me, ie it gives me pause. The others, I do not know or cannot remember or saw too little of.

While watching Nirvana in Fire I kept wondering how Hu Ge's eyes looked so befitting of a very sick frail person. So I checked out another of his 2015 dramas Good Times. His character is at the same age as him in real life, 32 to 33 years old.

HOLY COW! How could an actor look so drawn and/or much older than his actual age? His NIF eyes were really his, so different from only about 5 years ago. Nothing was done to make them that way. Plus he is so skinny. Plus his hunched shoulders.

A few OT's back, someone lamented Hu Ge wanting to go on a hiatus. I'm 100% in favor of him having an extended hiatus so long as money won't be an issue. This guy needs as much R&R as possible to regain some of his youth.

Commenting about the drama itself and watching Madame Antoine must wait until my brain is fully functioning.

I saw a Chinese magazine with Hu Ge on it/in it at the petrol/gas station. Flipped through it to see what pics they had. There was at least one modern-day pic of him looking pleasantly serious. The rest were Nirvana pics.

If his 'sick' looks are not due to make-up, then that is one very unwell actor.

I watched Episode 1 of both Signal and Madame Antoine.

*** SPOILERS ***

Signal, I really liked. It was a very good start. Smart cops, interesting play with light, very realistic, good suspense and a great pace. It was a bit more like OCN in the crime procedural but not as heavy. The coincidences that led to 2 modern day cops working on a cold case was intriguing. The supernatural element drew me in and the action and great acting kept me.

Madame Antoine was light and looked nice (colours, light). It was amusing with a cute twist that gets her in position to bug him no end. The psychological experiments do not seem very professional at all, and how he came up with his hypothesis or drew his conclusions based on one sample was laughable, however, I can ignore that and just watch it for the bickering for now. At least, they are starting off as somewhat equal before either starts getting stupid. Sung Joon still has not displayed much nuance to his expressions. It'll be interesting if she can help the gymnast with the psychological problems better than he can.

OK found the part that mentions it.. In DB: http://www.dramabeans.com/2015/08/lee-je-hoon-teams-up-with-misaeng-pd-for-tvns-signal/

"The drama is a crime thriller based on Bong Joon-ho’s film Memories of Murder, about the real-life Hwaseong serial murder case from the 1980s that remains unsolved to this day."

Also there's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hwaseong_serial_murders

0

Because the real actual case remains unsolved, I see this drama as a mix of two movies, both fictions: Memories of Murder and Frequency.

0

My main concern is that it continues to be well-made and smart and gives us some interesting twists with all the back in time communications which change the past. I'm hoping for some time paradox or other and how this show challenges physics and still sounds plausible (ie without seeming totally silly).

@ Snickers?
Experiments - Very unethical in my view. I'm glad he gets the bag in his face and a bloody nose when the teacher found out she was played by her 'boyfriend' and the doc. He still does not learn from that and wants to run another experiment.

I was just reading vaguely about narcissistic personality disorder... persons with it... arrogantly think they are right and entitled, lack of empathy, exploitative... and the character of CITT Yoo Jung came to mind at once... and now, the psychologist with his hare-brained experiments without consideration for persons' feelings seems a bit like that too.

If dramas have done nothing else for me, they've gotten me to do strange bits of research on psychological disorders and made me observe both adults and kids with a satirical eye. :)

Required fields are marked *

I don't think he has narcissistic personality disorder, at least not serious enough to be clinical. Apparently, everyone can be "diagnosed" with multiple disorders even though vast majority are functioning quite well.

I'm surprised that the basic premise of the experiment passes muster. The hypothesis should be "Is the feeling of love neurological something plus hormones?" The hypothesis shouldn't stated as a firm conclusion "Love doesn't exist."

Crazy experiment - Totally unprofessional, hardly methodical and unethical (plus all the rest of what) - totally makes the results of the experiments invalid.

It's only 'fun' because we're detached viewers and I watch because I want comeuppance for Doc who's so unfeeling and arrogant. I believe Hye Rim will be more than adequate to give him as good as she gets plus some... I want that to have some resolution.

I'm criticizing the design of the experiment. However, for the drama's sake, I'm accepting the premise that the guy is as intelligent as "they" make it out to be and that the experiment can be considered valid. Thus, the major no-no is that the psychologists choose to participate in ways that can influence the outcome of the experiment, thus making their experiment invalid.

I don't think the guy is all that unfeeling. He must have certain level of empathy to choose the career of clinical psychologist and be successful at it (drama's premise). I think patients don't respond well to someone who can't somehow relate to them.

0

Spoiler... could be in Ep 2

Yes, the gymnast, Ma Ri also wanted the doc to open his heart... so she wanted a give and take but he said no. Well, professionally that's OK that he does not tell about himself, but he also seems to be not 'caring' or too cold. So that would definitely put me off, if not Ma Ri.

0

He did seem sincerely wanting to help Mi Ra though. His method and delivery may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, in many situations it is necessary to have someone who can isolate thoughts from feelings. In this case, although the psychic correctly identified the cause, she couldn't come up with concrete methods to help the girl. Again, I'm accepting that in this dramaverse, the guy's method worked like magic.

0

Well, I'll grant that his style could have been a little warmer and that he may be credited with the method. He did however elicit support from the psychic, who then tricked the anti-fans to appear to support Ma Ri. Clever, and yet, I don't feel all that satisfied with this instance of treatment success.

It's all in fun and meant to be funny ... yet there's the peevish, judgemental part of me that is thinking our hero and heroines are seriously flawed in terms of morals, ethics, honesty... Of course all characters are flawed (or should be to begin with), or else they'd not be relatable, however perhaps I find deception of kids quite high up on the range of nefarious flaws! In a different show, I'd prefer those kids to have wised up to the consequences of their actions and to have chosen what to do, rather than to have been conned into it.

The show is light and lightly amusing so far. The other show, OneMHE however can be laugh out loud funny and Signal is terribly serious. On top of these, there's the slightly troubling CheeseITT that tickles the brain and sentiments in another serious way. With these shows, it's a busy weekend!!

0

I thought the anti-fan kids got off easy- no financial, psychological, or physical damage. If I could, I would give them a taste, a large mouthful, of their own medicine.

It is established that the psychic has a moral-ethical line that she wouldn't cross.

As for the psychologist, he is pretty much irrational regarding both his experiment and the psychic. The reasons are clearly strong emotions and feelings which he is currently not equipped/ready to acknowledge. "All's fair in love and war."

One More Happy Ending - @ Susan ????? recommends this...

I watched the first episode. Another light and fluffy show, but the comic timing is great. The events that lead to how the 2 end up together come on thick and fast and are a tiny bit innovative but mostly they also rely on the trusty trope required by most dramas, ie coincidence. Still, it was entertaining and the characters were relatable.

I've only ever watched Jung Kyung Ho in Heartless City and a tiny bit in I'm Sorry I Love You, maybe .... Both were 'tragic' shows so I'm pleased to see him bring on the laughs and appear so bright and reasonable.

Now that we've already got them together, the question is, what's going to keep them together or drive them apart... (I imagine all the tropes lining up to come to the fore!!!) LOL!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_school_special

The American Broadcasting Company coined the term after school special in 1972 with a series of made-for-television movies, usually dealing with controversial or socially relevant issues, that were generally broadcast in the late afternoon and meant to be viewed by school-age children, particularly teenagers.

So the phrase is even in wikipedia. Moorim School seems to be targetted more at very young teens or the under 12s as far as I can tell. Still, inexplicably, I find it cute and fun to watch,... definitely not hardwork at all, which must be it's main draw since the characters are basically flat and the plot with it's mystery is only mildly interesting. :)

0

After-school specials are famous/infamous for "lessons to be learned," such as drugs are bad, be nice to people, and etc.

0

Well, I'm trying to think what 'lesson' is to be learnt, if any. Probably that one can't do everything alone and it's good to have friends, if anything.

I'm thinking it's more just a simple kiddie show, with nothing too complicated, and if there's a message in there somewhere, it's a pretty low key and usual kind of thing.

*** SPOILERS ***

We have a mystery from the past, some magic thingy people are after, missing kids, and a love triangle. There are also superfluous side stories that only contribute a little bit to the main story. A slow pace on the whole, but enough action to keep us engaged.

0

Well, these would put me to sleep, seeing as I've no background at all to understand them. However you might find them tantalising nourishment for the brain, or at least you must have thought so, otherwise why commence reading about them. Why are they snooze-inducing?

I wish cdramas in general "know" how to quit while ahead.

I also wish they don't undercut the tension in climactic scenes. Example: Final episode. Demon lord pried open a rift between human and demon worlds. Massive demon army would soon enter human world. As usual, the good guys were late. No time to lose. Everyone could use their magical power to pop from point A to point B faster than a blink of the eye. Some stuff happened. Even less time. Then, two of them took 5 minutes (my time) to go from point A to point B because this would be a farewell scene with stuff about love, feelings and apologies to say. The irony was these two could read each other's mind. Thoughts occur much faster than speech. TV magic could make a "thoughtful" conversation take place within a second's time. But, nope, they must talk. Once at point B, a few more minutes (my time) of talking before sealing the rift.

Yes, this is something that did occur to me before. There are Shows that seem to shoot themselves in the foot.

Things are interesting and going swimmingly (at least to the International viewer), and then suddenly the show takes a turn towards mediocrity (to suit the home audience??? to ensure sponsorship or in compliance with orders from above?) and the spark that sets the show apart dies down.

It seems to be happening in CheeseITT now except for the fact that the male lead is still questionably 'evil'. Viewers are maybe becoming more interested in the 2nd male lead's arc since it seems that if there is an arc it's with him.

As for the rest of the show, other than weird characters doing stuff to bother the female lead, it's a love story with hardly any plot.
