have anyone know name of an asian drama about LOVE - HATE RELATIONSHIP, both man and girl love each other so much but both of them have too much pride so each time there is a misunderstanding both of them hurting each other until the female said to the man " DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YOU HAVE HURT ME AND HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU "

" WILL YOU BELIEVE ME??
NOW I EVEN DOESN'T HAVE A STRENGTH TO HATE ANYMORE, THE WAY I CHOOSE EVEN THOUGH IT END TO MY DOOM I WILL NEVER REGRET BECAUSE THAT IS THE WAY I CHOOSE MYSELF"

Happy friday beanies!

I'm so sad I remember you is over. I loved it x 1000. Writer-nim did such a perfect job.

I'm getting excited about Yong Pal - looking forward to watching episodes 3 & 4

For Scholar.. i want to love it but god! its so tedious. And agree with the recaps 100% - why dont they give yang sun something to do other than cry or stare unblinkingly in the face of death???

<yang sun something to do

They are building up for the moment that she'll have to kill Gwi. She'll go from doing nothing all the while to doing the one thing only she can do. If it weren't for that, she'd probably just continue crying or stare unblinkingly at death....

But yeah, sarcasm aside, that's probably one of the main reasons I'm not watching. Too much damsel.

you know I was ok with too much damsel...but this last ep was too much in how (it might be too harsh but...) stupid she is..i think she used to be smart right? in the beginning?..i really can't remember now.

anyway. anyone think the writer is just gna have them all die off in the end?? i think it might be a nice ending..joonki dying trying to help yangsun defeat gwi..and gwi killing himself and yangsun as he drinks her dry...or maybe not.. hehe. any ideas how to kill off yoon, hak-young(though maybe not him..i really like him:) Hye-ryung, Suhyang, and Hojin(poor hojin i like him too.)??

Hi Everyone! Happy OT and Weekend!

The shows.... not many but oh the feels!!!

I Remember You - It's over *wails* A show so good, so rich, so nuanced, with so much to say, whether easy to accept or not... and it stuck to its guns in spite of low ratings. Encore, encore! I feel we cannot have too much of it. Competent, coherent, relevant, entertaining, suspenseful, heart-warming, funny and real. Show you will be sorely missed. Show, I will Remember You.

Oh My Ghost(ess) - The solution of the crimes and how to get rid of a bad spirit is about to start now, and the angst of our OTP ... may it be shortlived. Let the pain begin!

Midnight Diner - I'm putting this on hold for a while. I don't think I can concentrate on this show and do it any justice at the moment... with the I Remember You finale. Nothing yet can beat the satisfaction of savoring a story so well written and so well told. And now this show has to contend for attention with and Yong Pal as well!!!

Yong Pal - OK, after watching 4 episodes, I'm officially liking this show. The suspense, the pace (quite breathless after watching) and lots of heart, ... some from unexpected quarters, intricate plot and many interesting characters with different agendas... and poor Yong Pal in the middle! It's totally drawn me in even as I'm still sadly attached to I Remember You.

I am amused by the reverse makeover trope where the guy gets to model new clothes (most of which don't suit him, I feel!!) bought by the female. At least let him look more comfortable or something! LOL.

At first after Episode 3, I wrote that "I'm looking forward to the time (and I hope it will come) when he will have to question the morality of colluding with criminals"... but after Episode 4... scratch that... he is and he does more than just question. It looks like it's going to be an exciting and breathtaking ride!

Happy Watching! :)

Hi GrowingBeautifully,

Although I disagree with with you about the first two shows, your enthusiasm for Kdamas is very infectious and lovely to see!

Yong Pal is the one I'm keeping my eye on now. I haven't yet decided if it will be very good or a spiraling disaster with that set up for the first 4 eps - it could go either way - but, I really want it to be very very good. It has such a great cast!

Hi Susan

LOL! I'm always happy to read ya and to know your take on the shows, regardless of how I feel about them. I don't mind at all that you disagree and I'd love to know how they have not met your well-informed standards. :)

I know something of what you felt about the 1st 2 shows from your previous comments on them, please do tell me more what makes them 'not' what I described them for me, to you?

I agree that I'm hopeful about Yong Pal. So many characters with strong personalities and contradictory or different goals... You mentioned an over-arching premise to the story within which many things could play out. So you'll be looking out for when it gets messy, if it gets messy, I believe? :D

@GrowingBeautifully

:-) At risk of starting a thread where everyone tells me how much they liked these shows....

Yong Pal: Yes, I'll be looking to see whether it gets tight (like Two Weeks, for example) or gets messy (like most other medical dramas). It's neither right now.

I found episode 4 to be a bit cliched. There are some really interesting characters, but that whole radiation thing with him talking the disturbed patient down while everyone else was standing around ineptly felt like cheap television. Compared to episode 1, it was a real come down. But we'll see. The set up is interesting and has a lot of potential. The cast is strong. I'm hopeful! :-)

Technically, there's not much more I can tell you about IRY and OMG from my earlier comments. I can tell you my opinion as an audience member though:

I Remember You was strong through the first 8 episodes, then they began tweaking the writing. The characters suffered and were much less compelling. The plot also seemed to evaporate. I quit watching after episode 12 and just read the recaps. I never felt the urge to go back. I guess if I had to sum up the second half of that show, it would be: boring.

Oh My Ghostess has always been too cringeworthy for me to watch. I find both girls unpleasant. I've tried a few times with a few different episodes and I just can't do it. On the other hand, Javabeans recaps are a delight! If you don't watch the show and just read her recaps - it's wonderful! She would make a great director. She's got a fantastic vision.

Hi Susan
I tried to begin replying to you earlier but ran out of time. Yes, it's a risk to have a convo here about this, but I think we're good. :)

Yong Pal - I believe I know what you mean. For me as a viewer, I look to see if they are just going to waste our time with repetitions and fillers or whether each new thing introduced really adds to our knowledge or understanding of the story or the characters. I look also for character growth, for where a character is flawed or good and if they become better or worse and are redeemed. If there are relationships to be explored or a romance then the getting together of the people should be convincing and natural.

IRY - I kind of get what you mean by them abandoning the high concept. So I ask myself why I did not find it boring. The reasons, I feel, are those that I've mentioned above for Yong Pal... those things that I looked for I found in IRY. I believe that while the initial episodes drew me in, what was more compelling to me was unraveling what made, who were and how to 'live with' psychopaths. The show got me invested in the individuals as persons with concerns and reactions, some of which were relatable and others obscure and intriguing to me and I wanted to solve the riddle of those persons. Very quickly when we knew who Min and Joon Yeong were, I thought of them as persons I wanted to get to know better, persons whom I wanted growth arcs for and some kind of resolution for the pain that they had suffered, while at the same time justice for those who were their victims. The relationships that enabled these were thus compelling to me, and I was privy to the revelations and the feelings of the characters as these played out. So I was a happy camper the whole show, getting what I wanted and feeling that I was respected as a viewer. A big plus point to me!

I'd actually have loved to have read your take on the technical aspects, but that's OK, since you did not watch the 2nd half.

As for OMG, I feel that there's much less meat to it but the simpler focus of getting the OTP together and what do we do with an evil spirit is either being well portrayed with little loss of time or on the brink of being explored. It is still tight enough and progressing and hasn't fallen into a mess yet, the way Mask did. So I'm happy with this show too. It could do more of a reveal to the rules of possession though.. but perhaps even the writers themselves never got that down properly.

As you said, ultimately it's really whether watching a show increases the enjoyment of the viewer or not and that is what counts. I feel that the joy of a large, well informed viewership is no small measure of how good a show is (ie sans the technical analysis). Anyway, I'm glad that my uber enthusiasm gets to rub off somehow LOL! Read ya again!

@Susan

I didn't watch IRY and am not watching YP, but I wholeheartedly agree with you about OMG. I'm still watching it for the acting, but emotionally, I've jumped ship to jdramas.

Part 1

Wow! What a detailed response! Now I feel bad for responding so shortly. I'm in the middle of a big edit - our writer kind went off in her own direction and now we've got to rework a lot of things to get back on track. By today. :-) Always!

So, if I understand your viewpoint - it's the emotional arc of characters that draws you in the most. Your second focus seems to be the intellectual premise of the drama. Every actor would LOVE you!!

For me, the thing that I find the most enjoyable is the creation of the story world. For the benefit of anyone else who is reading, a story world is that complete coherent universe that the characters live in. It comprises the main narrative, the side stories of all of the characters - not just the main ones, he background stories of the main characters, the places characters go (locations and background), the clothes they wear (costuming), the foods they eat, etc etc. And lots and lots of research on anything that the drama touches upon - gangsters, space travel, corporate takeovers, sniping, ballroom dancing, kindergarten, fashion, etc. etc.

Basically, a story world is everything that comes together to make you BELIEVE in the drama. It's when these elements really come together well that audiences completely immerse and really get into a show: My Love From the Star, Misaeng, The Return of Iljimae, Pinnochio, Two Weeks, City Hunter, Healer…. Didn’t you actually accept that Manager Do was really an alien? I did. Did you believe that someone like Healer could exist? Or City Hunter? And that they could do all those things? I did. And THAT is the power of a really beautifully constructed story world.

The biggest and best franchises also have theses: Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings… think about all the characters and sides stories and research and how crazy the fans get who show up to conventions and argue about all these elements! That’s the power of a great story world - or story universe - it’s totally immersive and believable.

Accompanying a story world is a story bible. This is a big document (production website) that contains everything in excruciating detail. As one friend of mine in the industry describes it, it’s the plane crash document. Imagine if everyone who ever worked on one of those big franchises got into a plane crash - all the writers, directors, producers, etc. Some intern could pick up the story bible and go to a studio and, from this document, the entire story world could be recreated and new stories written and the audience would say, “Yep! That’s the franchise I like!”

0

Part 2

So, I guess, to answer your earlier question about what gets me annoyed from a technical standpoint with dramas - the biggest thing is inconsistency - characters who were developed in the early episodes and are changed in later episodes without a believable mechanism for this to happen (IRY) and stories that drop earlier plot development and go off the rails (Mask). My second biggest pet peeve is when a new writer comes in mid-series and, more or less, doesn’t read the story bible. That’s when you get someone taking the story in a new direction that isn’t consistent with the earlier plot development and remaking the characters so that they act in ways that aren’t consistent with their earlier development. More or less, this is like bait and switch. The aud came in based on one premise and one set of characters and now is getting something else that looks like the old drama, but acts differently. Kinda like its been possessed! :-) (SWWTN is beginning to do that.)
Consistency is all about the story world and the story bible. And just to cut off the obvious comment from someone who wants to defend their favorite dramas - no it’s not okay to just change the story world midway through production. It’s also not okay to have gravity not work halfway through your day. If we’re going to believe something, we need to be able to rely on it. And I’m pretty reliant on gravity.

@news

Will you tell me what you like about Jdramas as compared to Kdrama? I'd really like to have your insights.

0

Growingbeautifully: and how to ‘live with’ psychopaths.

That's actually part of what hooked me - especially the slow realization that Lee Hoon Jo wasn't exactly mentoring Min, he was managing him.

0

Hey Susan!

Nomu nomu kamsa-hamnida!!! Thank you for again taking the time and trouble to give me such a detailed reply in the midst of your busy schedule!!

I really love to read you. You give me so much to consider and help me understand how to analyze and appreciate what I watch.

As always, I end off in awe that so many dramas are made that actually pass muster, since so much effort is required to make a show good.

One conclusion I come to, stated simplistically, and which is also close to what you said before, is that it's fortunate many people enjoy with both head and hearts. Where a show fails on the head level, if viewers are more of the heart type and feel a degree of emotional satisfaction, much that goes wrong technically is forgiven.

I find it interesting even, that what you say became inconsistent in IRY, worked for viewers like myself and is deemed not a problem or mistake. I wanted Hyun to become less cold, calculating and rigid,... and when he did, I was happy without thinking why. I put it down to the fact that he was actually a warmer person to begin with but had put up the cold front over time, and was now being warmed up by his meeting persistent, characters like Ji An, who wore away his hard exterior. It appeared more as a slow transition and did not jar, but I know what you mean ie that he was never 'shown' warm as a child so what made him warmer as an adult, mid-way into the show is not so evident.

I agree that the huge inconsistencies in shows like Mask do disturb me. Fortunately the love story and (as you said) the chemistry of the OTP enabled the show to retain many viewers. The feels were so good where the romance and the pathos over Mi Yeon were concerned, so that I believe many of us watched mainly for this and were not invested in the revenge. It was a pity because it began as a compelling story with so much potential.

I'm not watching SWWTN, but if you want to expound on it or other shows that are doing good or bad jobs technically, I'm always going to be interested on reading you. Catch ya again!

0

@harmonyfb

Yes, the hook for me will be the people and the relationships. How they are together and apart, the dynamics that play out because they are together and how it would have been if they had been apart or with someone else. I would have liked to have dabbled more in sociology (big groups rather than individuals) and definitely touched psychology, but these are peripheral interests. I'm just going to be an armchair analyst of a few shows and of a few individuals... if I can even manage that. LOL!

It was a very slow realization ... I think I did not use those words to myself until I read what you said. Joon Yeong took Min away to save Hyun from managing a little monster, and he was not convinced that Hyun as an adult could handle Min, now a big monster. But Joon Yeong never knew the power of love. That is why he is both pathetic and unforgivable at the same time and strangely, even likable. :)

0

@GrowingBeautifully

If you want my thoughts on SWWTN, my comments are up for episode 12. Actually, I've commented on most episodes. Up through 10, it's all been joking around - the community there has been enjoying the unintentional camp and good looking actors and very pretty costuming.

There was a writer addition at episode 11 - which could have been a real godsend because the show has had plotting problems, only they chose the absolute worst writer in all of Kdramaland - the one who did Liar Game. So, it's a complete disaster.

It's pretty clear that the the writers divided up the scenes, with the original writer doing all the romance and bromance scenes (very nice) and new writer (the Liar Game guy) writing the plot scenes. The characters now have very different personalities in different scenes. And bc the LG writer is ignoring the story bible, there's no continuity. Some big plot elements are the same, but he's pretty much undermined most of the early set up already (it only took him 2 episodes to do A LOT of damage!)

Most of the people who were joking around on the thread there have left after the writing change. (It changed the tone quite substantially.) Too bad, bc it was really fun!

And there's been no one interesting like @Growingbeautifully to chat with about technical elements. Everyone I've chatted with either can't or won't understand how writing works.... :-( Le sigh. Oh, well! Maybe I should be doing work anyway....

Did I tell you our main writer decided to write what she wanted instead of following the plotting brief, requiring a major last minute edit? She's a good egg, she just got consumed by her art! Then our art director's computer blew up this morning. Our UX designer needs to get us some drawings, but is in a cabin in a remote woods in Canada and can't get internet access. LOL! I'm like a little pillar of calm during a production melt down all around me..... :-)

You know those lines from Shakespeare in Love?

Philip Henslowe: Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.

Hugh Fennyman: So what do we do?

Philip Henslowe: Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.

Hugh Fennyman: How?

Philip Henslowe: I don't know. It's a mystery.

I've been saying something equivalent to everyone all day! :-)

0

Hi Susan
Oh what an entertaining post and good for my ego as well! LOL!

That's amazing what you quoted about the theatre business... very funny, but very apt. That was what I wondered since the two of us discussed how so many things are supposed to work together in order to have a good and successful production, ... when I considered the throngs of people involved, and that so many artists who may not agree have to work together and there is the possibility of errors everywhere.... I wondered how any production was successful. And yet, here we are, with new shows every 2-3 months, movies filling our theatres, performances on stage ... it's amazing what people can do together.

Thank you for considering me an interesting companion on these threads. :) I see myself as one trying to appreciate each show that I choose to watch, beyond the surface of the work, and trying to understand why I like or don't like something, or why something can be considered good or not. You have been a generous and invaluable companion in this endeavour of mine. That is why I thank you profusely! You are a gem!

I know I will not actually be watching SWWTN or even seriously reading recaps, but what you have written here has already given the kind of information I would not have thought of, and it explains why other shows have gone awry in the same way. It is enlightening. :)

In an environment where there's so much to do that we need to divide the work, I take it that it will be ok to divide up the writing this way, if all the writers were committed to the story bible? But it is so hard to do that even if I alone wrote... (I write some technical stuff sometimes) everything... I find that I can't even be consistent myself LOL... but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Now that you mention it (we can go on discussing for ages)... I'd be interested to know if and why you feel that the Liar Game writer made the Liar Game less good than it appears to be. It's really something to be considered the "absolute worst writer in all of Kdramaland" :D

Yes, you did mention needing to do emergency editing. Did you have to do it yourself or did you sit with the writer to do it?

It's good to be the one who can be calm when everything is falling apart around you. I kind of feel that I've that sort of personality as well. At least, I try not to react without thinking. Have a great weekend (at work I imagine) and I hope your show all comes together mysteriously, perhaps, but well! ?

0

@Growingbeautifully

What kind of technical stuff?

The company I work for develops software. There are documents to write/edit on the software so that organisations know what they are buying if they buy and what they are getting after they buy when they want software changes. Needless to say, it's more fun to write comments on DB. LOL!

Ah, I wondered if it was science. I have a background in science and always like discussing it....

You mentioned something earlier that I can explain,

"I find it interesting even, that what you say became inconsistent in IRY, worked for viewers like myself and is deemed not a problem or mistake."

Put this together with your next statements

"I wanted Hyun to become less cold, calculating and rigid,… and when he did, I was happy without thinking why. I put it down to the fact that he was actually a warmer person to begin with but had put up the cold front over time, and was now being warmed up by his meeting persistent, characters like Ji An, who wore away his hard exterior."

What happened here is that the show did not explain itself, so you imagined a reason. Fans do this all the time. It's the explanation for which seemingly sh*t shows have legions of fans. The fans create the back story and character motivations so they can explain away implausibilities and continue to enjoy the show.

It's actually a great thing - :-) - it saves many a show from shoddy development.

The flip side of this is when it goes awry. Let's say a group of committed beaners all love a show that's got issues. Maybe the OTP is has A LOT of chemistry even though the lead actress is significantly underplaying her role. So, when its mentioned that she's a bit limited in her emotional depth, they defend all the reasons that she would want to do this and what she must be thinking or feeling and how the show will go a certain way. But then, the show doesn't quite go that way. The writing suddenly goes all over the place and not the places that the audience expects - betrayal! The fans had expectations which weren't met. Expectations based on their own constructions of how the show should be, but expectations nonetheless. So, of course, they are upset. Ooops!

That's the flip side. If a show doesn't explain itself, it risks disappointing (and losing) it's audience. And would you rather let the audience make all your decisions, or work them out yourself?

0

Hi Susan
That's great to read... it makes clear now why it is an issue that changes in characters and plot are given some reason... logical, I presume.

BTW, can you tell me why the Liar Game writer is the worst, as you say?

0

Correction: "it makes clear now why it is an issue that changes in characters and plot are NOT given some reason"

0

@Growingbeautifully

Yes, I'll come back and explain what was wrong with Liar Game during the day when I need a break.... I've got to go manage solutions that crisis I was mentioning..... :-)

0

@Growingbeautifully

I'll get here eventually, keep checking back. It will be quite a few hours before I get a chance though.

I do like that we found a dead thread to chat on. This way we're not bothering anyone.

0

Hi Susan
We have also 2 other alternative places for nice comfortable discussion(s).

1) Healer recap thread Episode 20, last page. A few of us go back there often and continue conversations about anything.

2) You can email me. I've given out this email many times, and have no problem with spam. I continue keeping in touch with a Beanie or two by email. [email protected]
:)

0

Good gracious that's a long thread you have over at Healer!!

If you don't mind, let's stay here. That looks like a pretty close group you have other there and I don't want to intrude.

Email is always fine, but I must admit that I like having our discussion here rather than on email bc we can always send someone to it later if we think we'd like to share it.

I promise to get back to you on this topic (LG) sometime today or tomorrow. At latest Tuesday. :-)

I can always do short responses while I'm working. Especially ones that don't detract from my train of thought.

Btw - did you go back and look at My Love Eun Dong? That one was done very well start to finish.

I'll wait for Yong Pal to reach half way before starting it, I want it to be good but then it could go worse too ;(

LOL! I think many of us viewers are pretty brave and optimistic or at least hopeful. We just take the plunge and see where the shows take us. On the up side, if you like commenting with the live run, then at least you have company to spazz with or moan with. :D I guess for me it's 50-50... if I watch a show and there's no one to talk about it with at the time I'm watching, I feel I miss half the fun... so maybe I'm not brave, but just desperate!! LOL!

Yes we hope for another great production like IRY. That struck the right cord with me! :)

Delurking to say hello (it's been a while) and to profess my undying love for:
-Jo Jung-seok asCheppunim, who has rocketed up my list of Fictional Men I Want To Marry
-the ever wonderful Kim Seul-gi as our Lusty Ghostess Soon-Ae
- and our timid wallflower Bong-sun, excellently portrayed Park Bo-young.

I'm really hoping for a satisfactory happily ever after for all three characters as I've come to like and care for them despite of, or perhaps because of their flaws.

Oh My Ghostess, hearteu hearteu!

The man to meet Kim Do Hyung played by Kim Moo-Yul! My Beautiful Bride - great action scenes, intensity, and emotional memories. Kim Do Hyung, an impeccable banker by day and one of the most impressive and unsuspecting action heroes by night. I fear that it might turn into a Sign 2.0 due to the live shooting on the last day and that JNR accident. Thankfully it's not. It's quite ridiculous to expect for it to 'not end' as open ending because we know 16 eps for IRY wouldn't be enough.

I thought i can jump right onto the next KDrama bandwagon but i'm enjoying my Jdrama ventures for the time being. I must credit @alua for the slew of Jdramas that you provided. I ended up really enjoying Osozaki no Himawari and of course i downloaded the MR Children song. I don't know that my precious Ikuta Toma is in it. xD

On another note, despite being extremely reluctant on checking out the new Reply installment i will do just that for PBG. I'm just going to try it out as a homage for PBG excellent portrayal of kid stuck in a grown up body. LOL.

Honestly though, at the last IRY episode i have decided that i really have almost to no sympathy left for LJY. He deemed that his justice is right, and he claimed he love those kids. But once they jumped off and told him they didn't need it he can harm them.. Exp: Min and even Ji An.

I like that FINALLY! Someone tell Min that what he is thinking and his logic is real. I mean, never did anyone in the drama told the kids in particular Min that what he is doing is wrong and yay for Ji An saying it out. Whatever is his logic, since he is a man-child, stuff like that still need to be pointed out. When it's wrong, it's wrong.

Cheers, let me know which j-dramas you enjoy the most.

I don't think I started appreciating Ikuta Toma until this drama. Being all grown-up and doing a more mature role does wonders for him IMO. You might want to watch dramas from some of the other cast members of that drama. Maki Yoko's Mondai no Aru Restaurant (I think someone mentioned it last week) is really quite good. I also tend to give Kiritani Kenta's dramas a try, he's one of those somewhat underrated actors, despite the potential that he has.

I always thought Ikuta Toma as a somewhat funny and cute actor? LOL because of Hana Kimi though and i feel like he totally stole the spotlight from Oguri Shun. I actually thought Oguri Shun didnt know how to act because of Hana Kimi hahaha. But well, it was years ago now i find him absolutely charming.

Ahh Kiritani Kenta, i keep seeing him in quite a few dramas but every single one of it is a supporting character. Sure, i will check his works too then.

Btw, I am trying really trying on continuing Long Holiday... i'm stuck at episode 3 on the very of dropping it but figures it will be a pity since people hype it up as some kind of classic. Will it get any better? Surprisingly, the old 90's setting doesn't bother me.

I'm actually, a sucker for best friend turn lover if it done well but i find it is quite hard to find some decent ones.

Actually, this is my least favourite role of Takenouchi. I prefer him as sweet, sensitive guy, like in Nagareboshi or Rondo – just because he does the quiet, internal suffering so well.

His Mou Ichido Kimi ni, Propose is good too (it's a remake of a US film, but the drama version is definitely worth watching). And Ningen no Shomei. Wish I could find his drama Kazoku somewhere!

0

I hope you finish Long Vacation. I absolutely LOVE it!

Thanks alua for introducing me to this gem of a drama. I've only seen a few jdramas, which didn't do much for me, but now I'm truly converted and can't wait to watch more.

After watching so many kdramas that left me disappointed and emotionally disengaged, Long Vacation is practically a masterpiece. Not that I've seen many best friend turned lover dramas, but this one beats all the ones I've seen, which I thought were pretty good, not necessarily the story from beginning to end, but the relationship (9 End 2 Outs, Reply 1997, Reply 1994, Pinocchio, In Time With You-obviously the Tdrama).

I wish I can write a better review of Long Vacation, but I just recently finished watching it and haven't yet found the words to put everything I love about it in coherent sentences.

And can I just say, Japanese actors are handsome! Where have I been?! I totally heart Kimutaku.

Yes, where have you been? lol. I can't say that he is handsome but the thing about Japanese actor is there's something about them. It's like.. they have some charisma that attracts us. It's not really flower boy or anything, they just ooze charisma especially Kimura Takuya

0

ΚimuTaku is absolutely S-E-X-Y!! In a Won Bin style...OK, Wom Bin is younger, so KimuTaku comes first! Pride was the first drama with him and I couldn't believe how hot he was in the middle of the winter! Wow...

0

I'm glad you enjoyed Long Vacation. I nearly quit after the first episode because the female character was just a bit too much... but continued watching and her personality started to make sense.

I don't think it's a drama without flaws, but I just does the friends-to-lovers part really well – the way the friendship develops between two people that essentially start out as strangers, by some weird twist end up as housemates and just really click. It's not some silly "we've been friends for 17 years but never dared to admit our feelings run deeper" (you know which mess of a friends-to-lovers drama I'm hinting at ;-) !). But maybe that's it – it feels more real, because it isn't a lifelong friendship with one (or both) characters quietly suffering their unrequited love for gazillion years for no good reason whatsoever....

@Excitable and kalel
You're totally right. At first glance, Kimutaku isn't what one would describe as traditionally handsome, but he has an undeniable, elusive quality that attracts you and makes you want to keep watching him to figure it out! And I would never have thought he was similar to Won Bin, but I definitely see what you mean.

@Excitable
In case you haven't finished watching Long Vacation, there are SPOILERS below.

@alua
I agree; it's not a perfect drama and I thought she was way too much in episode 1 and the first half of 2 that I didn't know if I could get into her character at all, but I'm glad I was wrong.

The progression and pacing of the recurring themes/objects/symbolisms and character/relationship development are so well done. All put together, including the directing, writing and acting, they remind me of a powerful scene in Jiro Dreams of Sushi where he builds the taste slowly from the first sushi to reach its crescendo in the last one, which is not too different from how some classical music pieces are structured and exactly one of the central themes of LC. By the end of the drama, I felt absolutely satisfied. The connection between Minami and Sena (i.e. theme song, telephone, where they sit on the sofa, wine glasses, firecrackers, their different but complementary professions), and their self-growth slowly developed but organically came back full circle to make point.

I’m not sure if all of this would’ve worked as well as they did without the chemistry and performance by Takuya Kimura and Tomoko Yamaguchi. They’re so unaware of the camera and fully embodied their characters in all their imperfections that I felt like I was watching two real people’s lives unfold. They were so good that every glance or gesture, whether they intentionally chose to perform them subtle or not, was relevant and practically had meaning by itself.

By the end of the drama, I fell in love with both of them and I understood why they fell in love with each other. Nothing was overly dramatic or sensationalized, just perfect realism.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today. ...... Going through an intense heat wave here. Trying to stay hydrated!

Watched this week:

Mask - Almost done watching this.

I Remember You - Continues to be fantastic. .... 2 episodes left to watch.

Hwajeong - Only have time to watch bits & pieces of episodes.

Take care everyone and have a great weekend!

hi korfan, ditto on the heat wave, it's something else. Taking a walk at 9 pm and it's still nearly 90 - hot an dry.

I wonder what you'll think of the ending of I Remember You - will save thoughts for next week.

My Beautiful Bride ended too, and I am recapping the last episode just now. It was thrilling to the last minute. I think my only complaint is the number of gangsters they threw at us, and the double, sometimes triple names for each and keeping track of all that.

I want to jump on the Yong Pal bandwagon after watching the first episode.

Otherwise, I'm waiting for that next kdrama to love, like Producers, Healer, or Misaeng.

Stay cool!

hi, what a hot Friday, my fire alarm was beeping all day yesterday while I was at work, when I got home and discovered it, I was pretty nervous feeling like neighbors will definitely knock and try to murder me for it. it is just that the room was too hot!

today my cousin turns 30! I can´t believe it. oh man. He refused gifts, so I just bought a plant that looked like half a brain, and since he works with computers, I called it "external hard drive". nerd jokes...

then, in the drama-verse, since I like King of Mask Singer, I stumbled upon I Can See Your Voice, which I had not seen yet. Fun series, but they are sort of objectifying young women. I get chills from all the guys´ remarks and gestures and wolf howls. Then again, female judges are doing that to the guy contestants as well. and the crazy prejudice that attractive women and guys in the end probably can´t sing? Like they are just a piece of meat. I am glad that misconception is more often proven wrong than right. My favorites have been the Bruce Lee singer and the "John Lennon" one... I would like our national television or one of the commercial channels acquire the rights for this format. There were things I liked and things I didn´t like. the judges were funny, but I didn´t see much point in so many MCs.

there was this funny japanese guy in the museum lately who wailed that they should worn people on the airport that it is going to take the whole day or even two, and he was running like crazy, trying to read every text, take pictures of every detail, then he ran to the icebreaker, then he ran to the bus, poor guy. he wanted to know EVERYTHING.

haven´t been watching anything else in the meantime, busy reading 270 pages of the material for the new exhibition. I said I don´t want to use my own time, and they say, oh, you are going to snitch that moment somehow. go to hell. during working hours or not at all I say. but I am still reading in the evenings :-(

QUESTION: no specific question, I just want to know your judgement on presenting people as mere objects of desire in an otherwise great show. does it bother you, or can you turn a blind eye?

Required fields are marked *

Redfox, it does bother me. It doesn't happen so much in the scripts, but on Viki, the comments can be too distracting. So I turn them off. I notice it is mostly women objectifying the men. I think we have trained men not to comment on the actresses. Or, maybe they just don't have big enough breasts/butts to illicit a comment.

Also, when people write, "I'm watching this for XYZ." does that mean you are watching for his acting skill or his backside? There are many fabulous actors who I watch out for who are not particularly handsome. But boy, can they transform into a character.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah, there is that too. what I am also wondering, is can you even mean something like that "as a joke" - in my eyes there is nothing really funny about it. it is just very disturbing impolite and humiliating, and are producers guilty of making pretty girls do a sexy dance on a show, inducing wolf howls from male participants, or are they doing it of their own accord? It just all feels like a meat market.

0

Sexy dance from either a woman or a man is definitely meat market. I think it's okay in the privacy of your home, but in public, poor taste.

Required fields are marked *

This "..his acting skill or his backside..". I see so much of that and it just annoys the hell out of me. Judging by some of the comments on other sites and blogs, I sometimes wonder if it would matter at all if there was no plot at all. Sometimes it seems like half the comments on DramaFever are nothing about the drama or plot or story - just "xxx is SO hot!!".

0

Required fields are marked *

Viki comments, and many commenting sites, are impossible for me to read. It's like nobody cares about the show and most people are there exclusively for the fan-service.

Now, I'm a shallow person myself, don't get me wrong. I swoon about one-dimensional aspects as much as anyone.* But I still kind-of-try not to be completely ignorant towards the narrative or the characters.

(*) Like, say, the navigation system voice in Pinocchio; or the desk decorations in Misaeng (I call it office porn).

Required fields are marked *

I am definitely guilty of seeing (and commenting) on eye candy. However, in my defense, if you film a toned man exercising in a drama I'm enjoying watching (My Beautiful Bride/Banker) I'm going to notice and possibly comment. Also, it doesn't matter how many sparklies there are for the eye; if the script is frustrating me; I'll drop it. (I'm still upset about Scholar who walks and the weeper.) Also, lack of eye candy doesn't keep me from a good show either.

So I guess you could say I turn a blind eye or join in. I must say that they do need to have some relevance to the story or it sticks out like a bad product placement ad and can ruin the flow.

Did you have a show in mind?

Hello beanies, hope you've all been great. This is a bittersweet week for me, one of the greatest dramas to ever grace dramaland has come to an end I REMEMBER YOU, how i wish there was a season two, but even if there wasn't @shalini's fan fic has given me closure. This drama was perfect,I really thought this was SIG best work, he was perfect for this role and kinda hawt, which i have never thought him to be,maybe its the genius brains or the great wardrobe. Its the first time I have ever thought about men’s wadrobe but i was constantly going, wow, that shirt or sweater is really nice.Min had some great sweaters as well in these last episodes.
Back to the show,Yay they kissed, but honestly i really didnt care, i was content with the hand hold.Min,wow the actor did a fantastic job, hope he'll get big roles.D.O was awesome till now i think i was freaked out by the villan because of D.O 's acting and not the older version of him.
I wish Jang Nara and SIG end up dating wich would be weird except you have to watch them on Happy Together and Behind the scenes to get it.there's something there and i know SIG doesn't mind an older woman after all his cute mom is way older than his dad and he said it himself, he doesn't mind dating older women.
I'll remember you is to me 20 plus Alpha ? and will hold the award for the best bromance. im sure ill be Rewatching it atleast 5 times.
Im also watching YONGPAL but I'm still 50/50, only in for the male lead. Will see how it goes,i may continue if they stop that partial lipstick trend on Kim tae hee, seriously its not cute.mostly irritating to see.It took me a minute to realise the wife of the villan is the same person in COFFEE PRINCE her face has changed alot, maybe its age or plastic surgery, im not sure.
Haven't watched OH MY GHOSTESS yet looking forward to it but it now feels like drought season in dramaland. When Is OH MY GOD starting, i need Shin min ah and So ji Sub on my screen.
HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE finally finished it. It was hilarious and fun most of the time, till the last run of the show,i don't think i have ever been so disgusted by characters in all my years of watching dramas as i was by the snobby parents, especially the dad,it reached a point where I'd fast forward whenever he came on screen. Ugh, Maybe they deserve a visit from Joon Ho or Min. The ending was good though, ill give it that.Talk to the echoes in your big house.
Thats it for now.
Have a great weekend beanies.

On SIG and Jang Nara, I watched that Happy Together episode! I thought so too, that SIG doesn't mind...yet I see JN's reaction that seems to be...I dunno, shy and uncomfortable? Hah! reading too much into it, I guess :P

Yeah, maybe reading to much into it but maybe, just maybe she was shy and uncomfortable because its true and she felt exposed and if she wasn't into him, she would probably have laughed it off as SIG being a cute dongsaeng that noona looks out for.
Hehe even as i type this, i feel silly, i just want it to happen so bad, after watching them on Happy Together, they feel perfect together ?

I'm guilty for shipping them in real life too. Just because i think he's such a sweet young lad that keeps throwing praises on JNR noona. She is quite fond of him as a hoobae though. I don't really get why i ship them though lol. Maybe i just want JNR to marry off and give us some cute vampire babies. PS, i also like that JNR can be such a fangirl sometimes despite being a star herself lol.

She feels like us when we are squeeing in joy over our oppadeul. lol.

Hi everyone,

Happy Friday (if you're working like me) :).

- I remember you. Finished and enjoyed it the most and sad about low rating .

- Time we were not in Love . Started and dropped . It wasn't for me...

Have a great weekend

The best drama currently

I Remember You : such a pity it ended really, great plot, great cast, the only thing that went wrong was the ratings. The ratings did them no justice. Rarely you see a murderer that you can sympathize with, and his story that made him this way. You don't have an insane psycho murderer that you just want to kill yourself, that was really good on the scriptwriters. There was no plot holes, it was amazing. Was really looking forward to this drama and I can say it disappoint.

Oh my ghostess: a show I didn't exactly have high expectations but am really glad to see the explosive good reviews about it. Park Bo Young is just simply.. She left me in awe, this girl needs way more recognition she's only 25 but she's doing so well. Luckily they're doing well rating wise, plot wise its been going really well but how they end this drama and the love triangle could make or break it.

YongPal: Was looking forward to this drama for Joowon and partly curiosity about them having a female lead that's in coma. The ratings are doing the best out of the three dramas and I would easily credit this to Joo Won, genuine actor, just able to execute his role really really perfectly. 55 minutes of screentime that he had felt like 5, I can't wait to see how things progress as the female lead.

Plot wise, I would say IRY has the best, really hard to fault. Cast wise, OMG has it, PBY blew me away and her chemistry with JJS is undeniable.

I have enjoyed reading the recaps but the winner has to go to this I Remember You episode 13 recap

"With another pointed look, Hyun says he’ll take care of his own trees from now on, thankyouverymuch. Joon-ho says he feels disappointed, but Hyun retorts that since he didn’t ask him to look after the tree, he feels no need to express gratitude. The tree in question just smiles at that. "

Aside from it being a cute moment and all between Min and Hyun, it somehow made me think of Groot

My Beautiful Bride- I liked the ending. This is probably my personal problem but I never found director Kang as played by Son Jong-hak menacing. I mostly found him funny. Now if he had been played by Cha Seung-won, or Hwang JUng-min, or Kim Gab-soo, Choi Min-soo, or as it turns out Lee Seung-yun, then he/she would have been menacing.

I think that's all.

Just finished I Remember You few days ago and though with a bit if an underwhelming ending, was overall a great drama. This heroine was one of the best i've seen in a while. I loveddd her character. Side note, I really wished that D.O had more scenes though because in some sense he created my hype for the drama. What a great performance and i still remember that amazing first episode. Also, I am one of the few who saw the chemistry between Jang Na Ra and Seo In Guk, so i loved the kiss.

I was hoping to marathon The Time I've Lived you next but reading some parts of the recaps and feedbacks about it, it's probably worse than the original. I still don't understand all the hype about the original. The ex bf storyline dragggggeeed for most of the drama and it added a negative effect of dumbing down the heroine. Cause you know... how on earth could you still fawn over THAT guy? It wasn't until the end that we got our leads together. In my personal opinion, i've always thought it was overrated (sorry!). So i was hoping the korean version would learn from it and lessen (at least some of) its negatives and was actually looking forward to it, but sadly it seems that the boyfriend is even more unbearable in this version. Skip!

Oh, and I wanted to ask, what K-Drama music made the biggest impression on you--good or bad.
(I am not going back to listen to anything. I'm doing this from memory.)
Music can make a bad drama better or a good drama annoying.
Good: Missil's theme song. (I don't care. I love it's evilness.)
That oldie song in Angel Eyes. (Not the "an-jer eyes" song.)
I loved the music in Shine or Go Crazy.
Bad, the violin in Dr. Jin was SO intrusive and just screamed, "this is a sad part, you should cry now."
"Hello hello you shiny boy" in City Hunter. (The music in the first half of that drama I remember being really good--instrumental. The 2nd half was like somebody said, "this is a popular show. I want my songs here" and paid for product (song) placement.
Of course, "Almost paradise." (Which I still have to tamp down a throat vomit every time I hear it.)

Hello there ;)

The first song that came into my mind when you said memorable despite it being bad is HEIRS!It was all sort of horrible. OMG. If i ever heard "love is the moment!" again on my screen i will seriously smash my screen. It was so bad and cringeworthy. It sums all of my hate for Heirs.

And yes to "almost paradisee...." it wasn't as bad as the Heirs one though. That love is the moment thing is just seriously.. ugh. I hate it will all of my guts. Funny how both of it has LMH in it. Can i say that, my natural stand on LMH as an actor absolutely vanish after the Heirs. I just can't see him in the same way ever again.

And yes that Mishil one is iconic. Worthy mention is of course Dalja's Spring almost adorable and annoying.. "nananana.." lol.

For the recent years OST discography for me is FTLY and IOIL (so many gems).

Kill me Heal me the tune "Freak", that accompanied Se Gi, cause I thought: "this could be like my own background music.
and Without Words from You´re Beautiful. I even did an estonian version of the lyrics and try-out recording of it.

I think the first KDrama song that I ever even paid any attention to was The Melody's "Goodbye" from the Coffee Prince OST (they used it awesomely in all of the break-up scenes). Still a favorite of mine.

Good:
- She Is by Clazziquai (My Name is Kim Sam Soon). I'm still having it on repeat in my playlist.
- You by Ben (Healer). This song is just perfect for my vocal cords hahaha I can sing it on top of my lungs non stop for hours without anyone at home complaining ;-)
- Remember (I Remember You). This is the latest drama OST that is stuck in my head! In a good way! A good song for a good drama.

I can't remember any bad ones. Well, except Almost Paradise, but...

Oh, there is another song that's been forever stuck in my head, I'm not sure whether it's good or just "catchy": Touch (Full House Take 2). You can toouuuchhh... Omg, I think I even remember the dance steps LOL

Fake Respect for Elders in K-Dramas
Korea has been called the last bastion of traditional Confucianism, partly due to the emphasis on "respect for elders (and seniors)", especially in Korean dramas.

Much is traditional, but there are also some legal codes still in place to enforce that idea. It extends even to different forms of speech - in almost every drama you hear over and over again people going on about "speaking disrespectfully" and similar phrases, even among people born just days apart.

But how real is it?
In the vast majority of k-dramas the "elders" - ranging from seniors at work, parents, grandparents, etc. are portrayed not as anyone or anything to be respected, but as anything but.

In the majority of dramas elders are shown in the worst light possible. It is near impossible it seems for them to be anything but borderline insane it seems. The horrible mother-in-law, the greedy mother who only wants to live through her kids, the father who is often indifferent and very often just flat out stupid, conniving, corrupt, and capricious.

The MIL From Hell is probably one of the most common and enduring themes in K-dramas. They are very often portrayed as slave drivers to their daughter-in-law, insanely jealous of the son-in-law, and far more concerned with keeping up appearances than actually caring what their kids/kid-in-laws might actually want or think.

Fathers and grandfathers are not much better - if they are poor, they are portrayed as stupid or with gambling, drinking, or other addictions that drove the family into poverty. If they are rich they NEVER got there honestly - it was always by any means possible, up to and including multiple murders.

Given how badly elders are portrayed in k-dramas, I would suggest that the entire idea of "elder respect" is a vast joke on Korean society.

To take your comments further, at times, when asked, "What type of woman would you like to marry?" the idols/actors respond that they want a woman who is filial. I think that is falsely translated. What they mean is they want a woman who is family-oriented and will get along with his parents and he with hers. That would mean that all the elders involved would have to be respectful of the younger couple as well.

As for how elders are portrayed in dramas--well, where would the conflict be if all the characters got along all the time? Still, I rejoice when the elders are reasonable, honest people. I think there are plenty of those too.

Also, as my mother ages, I notice I am more filial towards her. I care for her, visit her, call her more often, because I know I will miss her when she is gone.

I think we have to remember that TV shows and movies are responses to culture. So sometimes they reflect the culture and sometimes they don't. Artists and writers create scenarios for their own cultural reasons. During the sixties, for instance, there were so many women-empowerment stories that were idealized that anyone seeing them would've thought life in the US was idyllic. So whether idyllic or critical, I'm not sure how closely one can match any society to the art it protrays. I've seen so many Japanese dramas about free spirits doing their own thing that I had to conclude that those were wish-fulfillment stories.

So it's possible that the Korean culture itself is so respectful of the notion of heirarchy -- elders, work sunbae, age sunbae, MIL, etc-- that dramas are the only place where regular people can get a balance to all that. One of my ESL women says she totally hates all that Korean hierarchy thing and is glad to be freed of that. As wish-fulfillment or even healing cathartic stories. The kdrama situations may be the exceptions that prove the rule.

In three of the last dramas, three adopted children were treated shabbily because they were not "blood children." I thought...uhm... Why is this? Are drama writers trying to respond to some cultural issue by doing this?

Some good points, and I am sure that there is a lot of exaggeration in dramas. But there are also a few pretty ugly real-life examples that suggest to me that a lot of that "respect" is not much more than a convenient surface patina. While the media and dramas are filled with "respect", the actual situation is much worse http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/04/10/398498496/a-forgotten-generation-half-of-s-koreas-elderly-live-in-poverty

So sad.

I wonder if this is a kind of backlash mixed with no social net. The older folks grew up in a world where they were unquestioned...and they took advantage of it...and now their kids who grew up in such an atmosphere are resentful. And the society always expected younger folks to take care of their parents so it didn't really plan ahead. Resentfulness goes a long way when it comes to not taking caare of one's elderly parents and relatives.

I remember thinking while i was watching "What Happens to My Family" that the show was kind of calling one generation back to the joys of communal living. I don't think i would mind communal living. It seems fun. But living like that... parents can be so intrusive and rude and demanding about absolute respect despite their cruelty..

I read some of the editorials and articles on the Korean English language papers. Some are quite interesting if you are interested in the culture. One article even went so far as to claim that one reason younger couples moved overseas or as far as they could get was to avoid "family interference" from the in-laws. But permanents emigrants are not a huge factor - a couple thousand a year. For me the most interesting part of the various surveys and editorials is how they differ from dramas. 3 good articles on this page http://english.chosun.com/svc/hotissue_list.html?code=The%20Buzz

Wow, thank you, this issue is lingering on my mind for a decade now.

I understand that K-drama has the commercial, moral (and maybe even legal) obligation to push this whole "filial piety" propaganda. What I never understood was, however, the utter lack of elders worth of respect.

My hate for the family K-drama sub-genre goes back to one show from 2005: The one likeable character goes through a "character development hell" where she has to unlearn all her heart-felt, reasonable, honest, encouraging, no-nonsense behaviour and become a brainwashed, lip-service, constantly-lying zombie like everyone else. And that's supposed to be a good thing.

There was one scene where she is explicitly taught by her loving mentor about the "Fake Respect for Elders": (paraphrasing):

"You cannot be disrespectful to elders!"

"I am respectful when I respect them. And I respect them when they deserve respect." (Which is quite an understatement, she is very respectful to anyone except the most despicable monsters.)

"Stop being sincere and pretend like everybody else, because that's the right thing to do."

If dramas could legally portray the actual situation, I wonder if we would be seeing a far different picture. There are actual legal (censorship) reasons why you never see an elder getting slapped back or taken to task in anything but the most respectful manner. But off camera. not so sure.

But my real point was that while dramas enforce and reinforce the details, such as talking respectfully, in fact they tend to portray elders in a very bad light more than half the time.

The writers "respect the elders" in the same way their characters do: In superficial words only.

Agreed - and the odd thing is that nobody seems to have caught on yet what is happening there.

0

When you're forced to respect someone higher than you..especially one who is not worthy of respect...of course you become hypocritical and angry and repressed about it. I suspect the culture is full of people who are truly respectful of elders, people who are worthy to be respected as elders, and people who are tired of having to respect someone simply that person is your boss, MIL, hubby, etc.

0

Carole - I am sure the situation is not near as horrible as portrayed in dramas. But I think it is worse than most of Korean society will admit.

0

I'm not sure that "respect of elders" has anything to do with worth. Alas. Elders are worthy of respect simply because they are aged and older/higher in the hierarchy. Respect per se is not something that has to be earned. It's a given. I think that's why it's so problematical. Those who are "naturally" or "culturally" GIVEN a place of respect don't have to be nice. So husbands can be unkind to wives, parents to children, kings to subject, boss to employer, chaebol to commoner. There is a kind of respect that goes both ways. Husband respectful to wife and wife respectful to husband. But I'm not sure if that is part of the MUST RESPECT hierarchical construct. Kings don't have to be nice to their subjects; they're kings and their subjects are below them. So..ya know.. being "worthy of respect" is not really part of the cultural equation. Nice if it happens though.

I think this is why romance work so well in this genre. One sees a glimpse into the future hubby's personality by how much he values his wife -- who ostensibly is lower than him in the hierarchy. So a good hero is at first disdainful of the woman (while second lead is all noble and worthy of respect) but then at last hero learns to value the underling.

Required fields are marked *

In Confucianism, there is a bit of a counterbalance to the hierarchical respect concept. "Respect" is mandatory, but the target of this mandatory respect is morally obliged to treat his "subjects" responsibly and to be a "better" person than each of his subjects. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism to enforce this, of course.

And that's where I fail to understand how that whole concept is supposed to work even theoretically. K-drama goes out of its way to prove that this whole moral concept is utterly dysfunctional (at least in K-drama-land) and the only way to deal with it is by deus-ex-machina plot points. Which, I fear, don't happen too often in real life.

Agree - I just wonder how much of the awful portrayal of elders is intentional, (not so) veiled revenge, or nothing more than writer fixations.

Hmm, honestly, I still feel kind of cheated every time I see this plot. The misogynistic jerk who learns through "love" that he can be a misogynistic jerk and a loving husband at the same time.

Another side to the typical k-drama romance with jerk vs naive candy girl is how will they be getting along 10, 20 30 years from now? Will they turn into the monsters and mutual-haters as their parents?

0

Not to mention that if the husband treats his wife like an 'underling', he's already made that marriage unsuccessful. Successful marriages are partnerships; unequal marriages (not talking about class or religion here, but ones where one partner is placed above another) are not happy marriages. Unhappy marriages = fail.

0

Respect in general is good. There should be baseline respect for everyone until you find a reason not to respect them. Unconditional respect is silly.

Without a doubt, certainly an interesting topic with layers of culture and history.

I sometimes wonder if the situations we see in kdrama land with the outrageous MIL, the dictatorial FIL, and/or the abusive CEO, are simply the socially accepted way for the writers to comment on and critique an observation they've made either in their own lives or in society as a whole.

For example, it may be that respecting an elder is not a bad concept or a bad thing. It's when an elder takes advantage of this established rule that the problems and conflicts start. ...... So maybe the dramas constantly present these characters, not to show how things are, but to be an example of WHAT NOT TO DO ...... as if to say, "this is how you look to others if you act this way, a horrible human being, so don't do this!"

Just a thought.

Good morning from smoky California. I can't even see the mountains. It will be a day inside--crafting and watching dramas.

I Remember You--Considering I wasn't going to watch this show, I am now so sad that it is over. I loved the ending with the closure and the open ending. Season 2 please. Let's make a 10 season Bones out of this pair. And have little bro help from inside prison, just like Bones' father was able to do. Productive prison life. I love it. Oh, and he's a lawyer, so he can help others with appeals.

Oh My Ghostess--Poor confused Chef. He has it so bad for Bong Sun and now she up and burst his bubble. I do think he is in love with the real Bong Sun and not the possessed version. He likes her when she is calmer.

Finished Discovery of Love, which ending just as I expected. A worthwhile watch, if you haven't seen it. Has good conflict and an interesting message.

Watching Surplus Princess--hilarious and fun. Lot's of objectifying going on there. I mean, the mermaid just can't hold back, can she?

Other than that, nothing on air is catching my attention. What about Last? It has a good cast, but another mobster theme? I don't know if I want to watch.

Hello, all:

How goes?

YongPal is my fave drama right now. The withdrawals from Mask are strong. The withdrawals from My Beautiful Bride even stronger. But I can survive.

YongPal has a really good main character. Light-hearted. Which I've apparently been missing. So even though he's overwhelmed and embattled from every side, there's a sane everyman vibe. I also love the way the writers throw in literary fantasy and fairytale references at every turn. Romeo and Juliet, Alice and the rabbit hole, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty. Some of it in your face, some more subtly, And so it's totally fun to watch. Kinda wish I knew more Korean literary or drama stories because I keep feeling i'm missing stuff. Love all the possible second leads. Hoping hero doesn't fall in love with heroine but eh... not likely to get my wish.

Last. It's okay. I'm not liking the descent into Sting/heist territory. Love Number Two.

Ending of dramas lately are being a bit too merciful. I feel so evil and punitive saying that but wow! I Remember You: bad guys get away. MBB: Top rich chaebol unseen bad guys get away unscathed and unseen. Even Mr Unfortunate allowed the bad guy to go all gooey. I understand there is "mercy, forgiveness, and understanding." I understand evil can never be eradicated and we need to be realistic... but seriously, the redemption arc is too much for me right now.

Oh my ghostess has been so good and unpredictable so far. I suspect the fallout will be more predictable. But still, it's all so nicely done. Although I believe our hero is in love with Bong and all the unseen as yet unknown aspects of her personality, I think this story is --in its weird way-- dealing with (supposed) bi-polar illness way better than all those Jekyll-hyde multiple personality stories that came out earlier this year. So..i'm thankful for the writer's skill in making such an understanding boyfriend.

Am totally loving the Beautiful Punishment skit in Gag Concert. Missing Tour Guides, though. Love Yes or No as well and am hoping we see Torch again.

That's all. Great weekend, all.

Hi! This is my first time in an open thread ever in all my years of being a beanie, so hello to everyone! I was in the hospital last week and now I'm recuperating at home, so what a better way to get better than watching the lastest episodes of Oh, My Ghostess. Man, I almost cried with the episode 12 ending, poor Bong Sung!

I was a getting a little disappointed in the story by episode 10, but luckily the last two episodes managed to change that and, while there are some situations the writer could've handled better (the whole possession mechanics), I understand why he wrote other situations the way he did.

Now, the question is, who does Chef truly love? Does he love both? Or does he love a person who doesn't exist? I'm excited for today's episode and, god! I wrote a lot! I guess I truly have a lot of feelings for this story and no-one to talk about it in real life.

Hi Alenjandra.
Welcome!
I think he loves Bong. He says he likes her being a little puppy. He likes her conservativeness and neediness. The Ghost is like another aspect of a beloved's personality that he tolerates. Bong is just being insecure because she can't believe in herself. It's true that while the heart of the chef is totallly focused on Bong, the facts of her "life" and the "times" he's spent with "Bong" have nothing to do with her.

So there's the question: Do you love a personality type? Or do you love a person because of the times you shared together?

Also, at the end of epi 12, the director showed scenes of Bong and Chef together and those were the most loving scenes IMHO.

I agree with you re the draggy episodes. The pace is very slow and dreamy but I'm trying to accomodate myself to it. The problem, I think, is that we viewers want to see the main plot progress so we FF past the bromances and camaraderies and friendships in the other relationships. Am not sure why those other aspects of the story don't seem to keep my interest because really they are fun. Especially the guys in the kitchen. They feel like filler to me but I suspect they might be more...and there is some thematic subtext I'm not getting which would make me fully engage in the slower parts of the story.

With the exception of the bad spirit/bad bro-in-law, there is no real sub-plot going on with this. Everything revolves around that one ghost character. So that might be the problem.

Yeah, I think the downside to Oh My Ghostess is it's a victim of it's own OTP success. I can watch 20 episodes of the drama diving into the complexities of having a love triangle between two people and a ghost since it's so good. Everything else is fine but they end up being filler type stuff just because the mains are so interesting to watch.

Hello All!
Happy for Friday to get here at last and start of the week's episodes for Ghostess. Really addicted to the show though it seem to have a misstep or two along the way with Bong Sun hardly made an appearance... Now she's suddenly expected to be the girl chef actually loves. Leaves me feeling cheated.

Hello everyone!

Man, someone closed my laptop after I fell asleep. Any other time I would have found that nice and considerate but I left it that way because I have an alarm clock program in it that I needed the laptop running so it can wake me up. lol Waking up in a panic is not a good way to start the day. lmao

I can't seem to find any current interesting dramas to replenish the ones that recently ended or close to ending. I had the same problem last summer when Marriage Not Dating and High School King of Savvy finished at around the same time.

I marathoned 10 episodes of Assembly. It's an okay drama but doesn't really seem to pull at my heartstrings when I can tell it was trying to. I did find that Teacyeon's acting has improved quite a bit though. I never once cringed watching him in this drama, which says a lot.

Scholar Who Walks the Night is another drama that is a bit of a meh. I dunno, I can't seem to quite buy the romance nor the story. The romance is a bit odd because it doesn't seem to know what kind of romance it wants itself to be. It's like I see Yang Sun in a puppy love romance while I see Sung Yeul in a more passionate romance. It just doesn't seem to be on the same page.

Oh My Ghostess is the last one standing among the "must watch" dramas this summer since I Remember You just finished. I have always loved Kim Seul Gi (she should post more pics on her instagram lol) but now I equally love Park Bo Young. She is just cuteness personified. They are a one two punch that has turned a good rom-com into a great rom-com.

Have a nice weekend!

Hey there!!!!!

Yeah, I couldn't watch Scholar either. My Beautiful Bride has been fun though. And Mask was just over-the-top odd, addictive, and forgetful of its own plot. I didn't feel Assembly at all either.

Agree on Assembly. I am still watching it, but not glued to it. The main character just seems to be not just naive, but at times downright stupid.

On the other hand, Ms Cop has made a huge turnaround and is now on my Must See list.

They try to portray JSP as an everyman type of guy with a heart of gold but sometimes he just comes off as unreasonable, stubborn and short sighted who doesn't have the common sense to listen to sound advice. I am not a fan of politics (I think almost all politicians only care about themselves instead of the public) and this drama only solidifies my distaste for it.

A moment for those that lost their lives in the Tianjin explosion.

Not watching much.

Finished: My Beautiful Bride. I didn't realize Ko Sung-Hee was in Nightwatchman, ( dropped after 2 dreadful eps ) or in Miss Korea.

Last is meh. Scholar is meh.

Ghostess is the only show I anticipate.

Diner isn't bad.

Started watching Roaring Currents. Need to find time to finish it. Watching J movies from the 50's on Hulu.

Hope the Innkeeper is good .

It seems many have dropped Scholar Who Walks The Night. I can see why. I watch it as my backup to the back up drama. I'm on ep 10. But I agree, it's pretty "meh" inducing so far. I mean, the source material is pretty awesome, so I was excited at first. But the development is just ok. Really, I'm only watching this for LSH and his nonchalant, bored Gwi portrayal. (He's soooo pretty).

The plot is pretty non-existent and I feel could have been resolved quite easily by now.

I also find that our Scholar, is reeeaaally painfully slow in taking action. Like, dude, you're also Gwi...DO SOMETHING! I don't understand the frequent visits to the jail and leaving, when we clearly see that he can break the jail locks open and walk out. Why not take the Yang Su and other prisoners with you? Why leave them there, knowing they will be tortured? Like, WTH man!!! It was all quite stupid.

I'm loving Yong Pal !!!! So sleek, pretty, cool and funny.

Will sorely miss I Remember You . They did leave quite a few unanswered questions. If this was not Kdrama world, I would hope for Season 2, but that rarely happens.

Can be recent or older. I'm currently watching Falling for Innocence/Falling for Soon Jung and I plan on watching Discovery of Romance after. What should I add to my to watch list? Thanks in advance! :)

If you want a decent rom com, then I would suggest Marriage not Dating. It was on this time last year, and in my opinion is one of the best Korean rom coms I have seen. A drama I would heartily recommend is Heard it Through the Grapevine. It was billed as a black comedy, but I would term it as a drama with some black comedic scenarios. I rate this drama as one of my top 5 all time dramas (along with Giant, My Daughter Seo Yong, Healer and Ugly Alert).

Oh nice you're watching Falling for Innocence. If you haven't already, check out Jung Kyung-Ho and Yoon Hyun-Min in the noir thriller Heartless City (aka Cruel City).

Discovery of Romance - I liked it. Eric back in dramaland after a three year absence...awesome!

I second I Heard It Through the Grapevine and My Daughter Seo-Young. Giant and Ugly Alert are on my to watch list. Marriage Not Dating was a good project for Yeon Woo-Jin and Han Groo.

Depends on your preferences but the following recent or older (How far back?) recommendations are a mixture of rom-coms, must see because of the chemistry and/or acting by a character or two, and serious subject matters...

2015: Punch, Kill Me Heal Me, My Beloved Eun-Dong, My Beautiful Bride, Mask, I Remember You, The Producers, The Girl Who Sees Smells, Angry Mom, and Heart to Heart.

2014: Misaeng, Pinocchio, Secret Love Affair, Bad Guys, Bride of the Century, Plus Nine Boys, The Three Musketeers, High School King of Savvy, Fated to Love You (Korean Version), Liar Game (Korean Version), I Need Romance 3, Modern Farmer, God's Gift 14 Days, Golden Cross, Joseon Gunman, and A New Leaf.

2013: You Who Came From the Stars, Two Weeks, Master's Sun, I Hear Your Voice, Flower Boy Next Door, School 2013, Secret, Empire of Gold, Let's Eat, Monstar, and Nine: Nine Time Travels.

2012: Queen In-Hyun's Man, Arang & The Magistrate, The King of Dramas, Faith, The King of 2 Hearts, A Gentleman's Dignity, and Rooftop Prince.

Just a few comments on some of the previously mentioned shows:

Heard it through the Grapevine (2015, SBS)
It's mostly a social satire with elements from several K-drama sub-genres. Tons of elaborate and developed characters and several sub-plots, great cinematography and soundtrack, good acting. (For me, top drama of 2015.)

Marriage Not Dating (2014, tvN)
It's a screwball comedy, it pokes fun at stuff that wouldn't be even remotely funny in real life and the main characters are not exactly likeable. Well, it's a screwball comedy. The plot has its issues, but the format is somewhat refreshing and Han Groo delivers an absolutely unique performance. (For me, top comedy of 2014.)

My Daughter Seo-Young (2012, KBS)
50 episode family drama. Pretty much classic family drama setup with all the overdone tropes, but this one does something special when it comes to character design and development: It actually considers real human behaviour. Multi-dimensional characters and individual answers to moral dilemmas in a family drama? Now that's new. (For me, the only family drama that didn't provoke spontaneous urges to nuke Korea.)

Ugly Alert (2012, SBS)
100+ episodes (a 30 minutes) daily family drama. Pretty good production values for a daily. Tries to stay on the light-hearted side with angst only when adequate. Some respectable acting performances.

I feel bad for Ms Cop

Ms Cop got off to a very bad start, as many have noted, in episodes 1 and 2, which portrayed her and the police in general as the stupidest (below keystone Kops) possible. The first two episodes were trashed - and rightly so - by many.

However, I think it is time for a 2nd look at it. The last two episodes have done a complete turnaround, almost like a new writer and/or director. 1000% improvement and has now made onto my "I can't wait list".

My internet went out this morning - oh noes! - and so I'm late to the party.

What I've Been Watching:

I Remember You: Well, the ending wasn't quite all I'd hoped for - they tried really, really hard to make it a happy ending, even though we all know in our heart of hearts that this is never going to be a happy situation. Lee Joon Ho was still breathtakingly delusional ('let's just all three run away together!' Wait, WHAT?), and little brother is never, ever, ever going to not be a sociopath. Never. Ever. In fact, he might even stop killing for a while, but odds are, he'd still do it if the right stressors were present. Lee Joon Ho is going to continue doing what he's been doing, and he'll just write off that one guy as an aberration.

Lee Hyeon and Cha Ji An will date for a while, and then decide they're better off just being friends.

Night Scholar: Lee Joon-ki is a pretty, pretty man. I'm sorry, was there an actual plot?

K-drama Moments:

My mother came to visit for a short holiday, and I announced that I would make delicious bulgogi for everyone. I reassured her - the pickiest eater in the known universe - that it really wouldn't be challenging at all (Meat, lettuce, rice - and I had planned the easiest of banchan to go with, gingered carrots & garlic spinach.) She was so certain that she'd hate the 'weird' food that she paid for us all to eat out instead. :throws up hands: Crazypants! Who would choose fried fish over beef bulgogi?

The Genius S4 - I should probably stop spoiling myself. But that would probably give my heart a hard time. *Crosses fingers and hopes that faves won't be eliminated next*. Oh wait I like them all now. Tho I like Junseok the least rn. Team Kyungs and Kong!!!

Plus Nine Boys - I didn't think I'd like this. Really. But I like the cast. And I have a newfound love in Sungjae and Oh Jungse.

Time to marathon OMG and IRY.

Hi Everyone, hope you're having a nice weekend.

My Beautiful Bride (aka MBB & My Beautiful Banker) - Beautiful OSTs and I'll certainly miss Kim Moo-Yul playing Kim Do Hyung. As I posted earlier up above on the thread here, great action scenes, edge of your seat intensity, and memories.

Scholar Who Walks the Night - FYI: New co-writer for the SWWTN scripts starting with episode 11. The co-writer is Ryu Yong-Jae who wrote Lee Jun-Ki's past drama Time Between Dog and Wolf and last years Liar Game on tvN.

Question: Have the action scenes that injured both Lee Jun-Ki & Lee Yoo-Bi aired yet?

I Remember You - The low ratings...not indicative of how good of a drama it was. A welcome change to have major and minor characters balance out the story and offer something different from the norm in kdramas. What's more, it was great to have a drama that stirred the mind and made one ponder and think about philosophical questions.

Young-Pal - I'm enjoying Joo Won as Kim Tae-Hyun/Yongpali and nice to see Kim Tae-Hee in a drama again.

Oh My Ghostess - Can't miss out on watching Kim Seul-Gi.

Missing Noir M - Finished it earlier this week. I liked that the case may have started out because of a missing person but as the team delved deeper into things and connected the dots, more often than not, the team would follow leads that led them to totally different and unexpected places. Nice to see Kim Kang-Woo again. Last saw him in Golden Cross and Haeundae Lovers. KKW in a suit...he looks handsome just like Song Seung-Heon did in the suits he wore for When A Man Loves.

@August - re: SWWTN, considering Lee Jun-ki and Lee Yubi were injured way back in June and the drama has been in live shoot for weeks now. I assume the scene that caused the injury was either edited out or aired a while ago.

If it was aired, my guess is it might be the scene in episode 6 where Yang-sun topples off a ladder and into Sung-yeol's arms. That one involved them both and if she landed wrong by accident in a take, I can see how she'd end up with a back injury and how Jun-ki's nose might break at the same time.

Dying for the Yong-Pal ep 4 recap because no one is seeming to mention the awful editing job the last 10 minutes of the episode?! I am fully aware of the live-shoot system in Korea but it usually doesn't hit the fan until at least a few weeks into production. Already ep 4 is wonky plus there's no preview for next week ... I like the show so far (even with a few mishaps in storylines), but am cautious of what the rest of the show will bring.

Romcoms... I'd say that there's rom and com in Healer as well as a bit of thriller, a bit of action and lots of heart. :)

Pure rom com - Marriage Not Dating

Large part rom com but masquerading as a crime show - The Girl Who Sees Smells

You can see that these shows have also been suggested by others,... which means they are not bad. :)

I can't believe I Remember You has ended and I don't know what to do next. I was initially irked that they changed the title from Hello Monster to IRY but after a couple of episodes, it made sense (Hyun and Min, the real OTP of I Remember You)

This drama seriously deserves more attention. It knew where it wanted to go and it made sure they stuck through until the end. For the first time in my k-drama watching history, I'll be waiting for what writer-nim will give us next.

And as much as we want another season, we will only have @shalini's fanfic. Thank for giving us an amazing tearjerking epilogue http://unstoppablesun.com/2015/08/13/i-remember-you-series-review-part-4-the-future/

Maybe not so exaggerated - Ran across this story by accident, and it shows the really dark side of Lotte (which is also right now going through a really ugly proxy fight)

This is informative. The evil continues today in the corporate world. A whole chain of collusion that proliferates at different levels to benefit a few at the expense of many. Enslavement in many guises, under the appearance of freedom. The scary part is we do not know if we are inadvertently contributing to it by buying or supporting something we like.

Hi Susan
I'm continuing here so that we have less scrolling to do.

"3.3.1.2.7 Susan August 16th, 2015 at 5:24 PM

..."Email is always fine, but I must admit that I like having our discussion here rather than on email bc we can always send someone to it later if we think we’d like to share it.

I promise to get back to you on this topic (LG) sometime today or tomorrow. At latest Tuesday. :-)

... Btw – did you go back and look at My Love Eun Dong? That one was done very well start to finish."

I'm fine over here too, just that I prefer to start on a fresh top level comment rather than scroll a long way up and down for a fresh topic.

My Love Eun Dong - Now here's the thing, I did gather from you that this production is good and I did watch most of it, but, it did not engage me. That's the thing that interests me the most.... WHY? even if everything is done well, it may not work for some viewers. Is that because the viewers (like myself) are going in with our hearts and not to appreciate how technically well made the show was. When I say with our hearts, I mean, whether I care or not about the people in the show. For the life of me, I didn't care if Eun Dong chose to leave her husband or not except that it was a form of comeuppance for his deceit and selfishness and ruining her love life. I may have cared more for the child. I may have cared slightly more for the hero Eun Ho (can't remember his original name) because he was so earnest, but I could not find that kind of longing relatable. I guess I'm too practical. I can be romantic and love romance but that show was just too overboard for me.

So, I think I'm writing only on my feelings... no technical considerations at all.

If ever I re-watch (it will not be willingly), then I'll have to look out for why it is a good show, even when I did not care for it! LOL.

But surely, most people do not go into entertainment looking mainly for technical perfection. We all want to be entertained, to have a time away from thinking too much. It's the other way around... it's because I like a show that I want to think about it and analyse why it worked for me, what was good about it, why I still like it even when parts of it were not good.

And, for me, it's when a show is ostentatiously badly produced, then only I'd question the technical details (and come running to you LOL!). It takes quite a bit to get me disappointed or riled up over a change in tone or lack of consistency in a production. That's why I didn't abandon IRY even when you said it was not working for you.

Perhaps, thank heavens many viewers are forgiving, or else there'd be too few shows that could ever satisfy!! What are the shows that you can say are really good, besides My Love Eun Dong?

0

Required fields are marked *

I can think of one very big reason that My Love Eun Dong wouldn't appeal to you. Were you born in 1988?

If so, that makes you 27. These characters were 40 and 34 respectively. They had kids and well established careers.

It's really hard to care about ordinary experiences we haven't had before. If we've had them, or somethign similar, then we can relate. This isn't true for fantasy or adventure experiences - here we experience rather than relate. We only relate to the emotional beats there. And there have to be enough of them in fantasy/adventure/sci-fi for us to care about the characters. But I digress....

You're right that people don't go into entertainment looking for technical perfection. However, they notice it immediately when it isn't there! We don't get in our cars to see how well they'll corner in the rain. We get in them to go somewhere. But, if it rains and we slide around a corner, boy then do we notice how crappy our car performs!

The same premise works for dramas. The technical stuff isn't noticeable unless it fails. Then it's ALL we notice!

And please don't ever abandon a show bc I or anyone else doesn't like it! We should all have our pleasures - a glass of scotch, some black licorice, a bad boy lover, etc etc. (I had wine and chocolate cake in that sentence until I realized that I was pandering to female stereotypes. Bad Susan.)

I like shows that are silly. I have a great love of camp. Xena, Buffy, SWWTN... Everyone has stuff they like and don't think about. I also love Russian, Spanish and French films, British crime shows, Korean dramas, Japanese anime, etc. I rarely analyze anything I enjoy. If it works then I just give over to the pleasure of it.

It's when things don't work that I start analyzing why and then what would need to be fixed. Because I started as a scientist - it's the things that need solving that are the most interesting.

You like to analyze shows that you like. Which means, if we're analyzing the same show, we'll often be on opposite sides on a thread. And then loads of fans can tell me why I'm wrong. Or, today's favorite tell-Susan-off meme, explain to me how ratings work.

On to shows....

I might have a list. :-)

Hi Susan
Part 1: LOL! I am almost double that age, my dear. A true blue ahjumma with teenage children.

Short answer: I like romance and all but I can't stand the cloying, all-consuming, practically stalkerish romances that are supposed to symbolise love. The "this is my one and only for all time, 'fated-to-love-only-this-one' kind of OTP... gives me the willies if taken too far. Eun Dong crossed my threshold for this. So too bad, no matter how many awards that show can win, it cannot win me over. :D

But we are speaking of how good it is and not that I must like it. So I gather you mean that the writing was totally consistent, everything fell into place as expected and the viewer was not thrown for a hoop.

The camera work was nice, alluring scenes, good closeups and lighting, but nothing terribly extraordinary.

Characters well acted, emoted beautifully (yet left me cold, :) ) and believable.

I do find fault with the 2nd female lead ... I cannot think how she contributed much to the story except to add an obstacle or two,... as if the husband and son were not obstacles enough. I found her extraneous and unnecessary.

I guess I like a story that is making a comment about something as well as telling a story. Other than saying that true love can exist and that Brother can love 1 person endlessly who is was pretty much missing from most of his life and juxtaposed with Sister who loved someone who was going to die soon... it did not give me much.

gotta come back later....

Part 2:
"It’s when things don’t work that I start analyzing why and then what would need to be fixed. Because I started as a scientist – it’s the things that need solving that are the most interesting."

I like doing this part too, although I'm totally unscientific in my approach. The problem I face is not recognizing what is wrong to begin with. When you point out that something is going awry and try to explain, I still may not get it. This is the part I want to address by coming to DB. I want to be able to see (regardless of how much I like something) that there is something wrong. How to solve the wrongness... I leave it to you experts LOL! or... OK, I'd like to try and give it a shot to guess what the solution might be.

"You like to analyze shows that you like. Which means, if we’re analyzing the same show, we’ll often be on opposite sides on a thread. And then loads of fans can tell me why I’m wrong. Or, today’s favorite tell-Susan-off meme, explain to me how ratings work."

I wouldn't worry about this. If we are both watching a show and you say it's good and I'm not liking it, I will want to know why it's good and why it did not work for me. So still same side. Similarly if I like a show and you say it's bad.

The safest place to do these discussion on any show at all is right here on this OT #408 thread. No one will care that we're going on and on about shows. It is unlikely anyone will want to check this thread and notice that their fave show is being dissed LOL!

OK, it's the end of the (Monday) work day for me. I'm heading off now.

BTW where are you geographically? Knowing gives me an idea of when your day or night is. I'm 15 hours ahead of DB time. I'll pop in repeatedly when I'm home. DB is my crack. :D

I'm currently developing a global new media franchise (lead producer) and hopefully within the next couple of years opening a new media studio. So, it's work work work work work....

Dramabeans is awesome for me - I'm actually using it as a way to get insights into what fans think in global markets. I can guess where people are and then get a real understanding of what they like and don't like in content and production values. Which is why I jump on the comment threads and take the beating! :-)

But, on a personal level, I'd always rather discuss with someone who can teach me something or can learn something from me.

And, I'm a true fan of Kdramas. I flat out like them. I think the whole Kpop concept is genius. In fact, we're planning to set up the new media studio in Seoul once we get funding. My team is all over the world already (mainly Europe and the US) so they'll hardly notice if the main office is in Asia! :-)

Well Susan, ? Congratulations ? (I think? since it means endless work for the near future) on being the lead producer of a global new media franchise. :) It's exciting and great to be in charge, and be able to put into action, ? what you envision.

I'm absolutely a kdrama fan (not so much of kpop music) and I now watch practically nothing else. If you want the opinion of a crazy ahjumma who's full of feels, I'd be happy to give you mine. LOL! I don't know what I can teach you, but we'll see. I know I'm educating myself just by having discussions on DB and of course with you, big time!

If you're going to set up a media studio in Seoul, I take it, it means you'll be producing shows from there for global consumption? On the one hand it sounds like great fun... on the other, loads of work :)

I'll be back to read you. I know I've left you heaps of questions and that it will take many breaks for you to answer them. Do remember to have some sleep as well!!!

0

:-) I just woke up! I'm about to dive into my work, but this is more relaxing.

I also found out that our deadline is about to move.... see? Shakespeare in Love.

Yes, if I go to Seoul, I'll producing properties for global consumption. A new media property looks like books, games, apps, live events, moving image, mobile entertainment, etc etc. It's kind of comprehensive. I can't imagine that I'll be producing Kdramas... but there are loads of people I'll want to work with. I'm keeping a list.

Seoul is important because Asia is pretty much the center of the tech boom right now. It's also placed to become a global entertainment juggernaut. So, it's the right place. People, talent, resources. I'm going to need all of these.

0

I'm actually getting all excited for you about this! LOL!

About Eun Dong. Yes, the production was solid (it is a good example of everything done competently), but that wasn't why I liked it. I liked the characters. I really felt pathos for the two leads and their dilemma.

I didn't mind the CEO girl, bc I know people like her. Unfortunately. :-) And not just one or two.

What are the shows that you can say are really good, besides My Love Eun Dong?

I can't resist the opportunity to put my opinion in. Sorry! (not sorry.)

Bestest & Most Favoritest:

"Two Weeks" (thriller)
"Marriage, not Dating" (rom-com)
"Misaeng" (office drama)
"Sungkyungkwan Scandal" (historical)
"Shut Up! Flower Boy Band" ('corporate rock sucks')
"I Remember You/Hello Monster" (creepy procedural)

Supernatural Shenanigans:
"Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong" (paranormal cop show)
"Secret Investigation Record/Joseon X-Files" (historical)
"Hon/Soul/Possessed" (horror)
"Vampire Prosecutor Season 2" (horror/cop show)
"The Master's Sun" (melo/horror)

Action:
"Crime Squad/Detectives in Trouble" (cop show)

There's a bunch on this list that I haven't seen, so I'll have to check them out. :-) I'm gonna trust you because IRY and Master's Sun were pretty disappointing for me.

Which brings me to another interesting topic - who are your I-will-see-this-actor-in-anything people and your Oh-hell-no-I-just-can't-do-it people? (I only saw Master's Sun for Kong Hyo-Jin - I would have dropped it halfway otherwise).

I don't have this list pre-prepared, so we'll have to go with yours first! (I'm still under a ridiculous deadline....)

who are your I-will-see-this-actor-in-anything people

Lee Joon-Ki, obviously (he is a really good actor), and Kwon Hyun Sang (I love his bad guy roles). If I see Lee Sung-Min, Kim Sang-Ho or Ma Dong-Seok listed, I'm apt to give it a go, because I like their acting, as well.

Kim Seul-gi is also a big plus for me - she is so funny. :)

Oh-hell-no-I-just-can’t-do-it people?

I don't know that I have any. Bad actors can surprise you with the right direction & script, while even good actors can be dragged down by bad material.

Master's Sun

I liked the spooky ghosts at the beginning, and then I couldn't stop watching because of how ridiculously manipulative the male lead character was.

I’m gonna trust you because IRY and Master’s Sun were pretty disappointing for me.

The first set - my 'bestest' are all pretty darn good, and all very different genres. Misaeng and Two Weeks even my I-don't-like-Korean-shows husband loved.

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw it! I'm gonna grab your response here and start a new thread at the end of the comments section.

@growingbeautifully @harmonyfb

That's weird - I just got a "your comment is awaiting moderation" thingy. Do you think there's a problem with us discussing on this dead thread? Is it possible there's a limit to the number of comments in a day?

Hi Susan
No, no anti-fans and no limits... just look at the way we've been at it in the Healer thread... nothing stopped us even after thousands of emojis were tosseed into a few pages.

I've experienced it before. Sometimes the server or the app just thought we wrote something naughty and sent it in for moderation. It can take just a while or hours. Sometimes I see my comment only the following day. :( :)

0

Ahhhhh! I didn't think I had ever written anything that didn't qualify as polite. I'd disagreed, but never been rude - despite being sorely tested at times! :-) I would have been very sad if it had turned out that people could control the commenting through anti-fan maneuvers. Then nobody could have a good discussion. Everyone would have to be like

"Lee Min Ho is the beeeeesssst. Let's all support him!!!!!!!!"

:-) That's the worst part about most sites! There's just fan service and no discussion. DB is awesome for its engaged community.

@harmonyfb

I wrote out a whole response, but it didn't appear. I'm going to wait to see if it "passes moderation".

So what's with that?

Hi @harmonyfb

LOL! Thanks! Glad you could jump in with your list. I only can say what I like, but I can't say if they are good or not. Let's go through your list.

“Two Weeks” (thriller) - I watched a bit of it...found it too gritty and painful for poor Jun Ki. Did not mind it otherwise.

“Marriage, not Dating” (rom-com) - I watched it, read the reviews praising it sky high, didn't have much of an opinion about it but liked it well enough.

“Misaeng” (office drama) - I was blown away by this one and it took me by surprise. I couldn't figure out why I liked it as much as I did. I was so immersed in Geu Rae's life I felt for him every little change in expression he had.

“Sungkyungkwan Scandal” (historical) - Did not watch

“Shut Up! Flower Boy Band” (‘corporate rock sucks’)- Did not watch

“I Remember You/Hello Monster” (creepy procedural) - Loved this one for how it gave hints and developed the story, gave us reveals about practically everything AND got us thinking and discussing the effects of labelling, upbringing... how to understand, manage and love a psychopath. I found it so intriguing.

Supernatural Shenanigans:
“Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong” (paranormal cop show) - I would like to watch this
“Secret Investigation Record/Joseon X-Files” (historical) - Did not watch
“Hon/Soul/Possessed” (horror) - Did not watch
“Vampire Prosecutor Season 2″ (horror/cop show) - Did not watch... may do so sometime
“The Master’s Sun” (melo/horror) - I did watch this but in those days, I did not think much about a show one way or another. I vaguely feel I enjoyed it but it was not compelling.

Action:
“Crime Squad/Detectives in Trouble” (cop show) - Did not watch
“Ten” (violent cop show) - Did not watch
“Heartless City” - Watched most of it but found it unsatisfactory on the emotional side...yeah hero died.
“Bad Guys” - Liked it but the subs came out too slowly, so that in the end, I lost steam waiting.
“Missing Noir M” - Watched this one all the way through and liked it. :)

One of the things that I liked about 'Two Weeks' was how fantastic LJK's acting was - Chang Taesan had my full sympathy throughout. :)

If you liked Missing Noir and Bad Guys, you'll definitely like "Ten".

I hadn't seen LJK until SWWTN. I immediately looked for his other work. I tried Joseon Gunman and Arang and the Magistrate - one ep was more than enough there - and then happened upon Two Weeks. Brilliant. He's ugly in Two Weeks. He's a beautiful man who plays ugly. I utterly believed him as a loser gangster. In. Cred. I. Ble. !!

Hi Susan
You may also like Lee Jun Ki in Time Between Dog and Wolf. That was another gritty show but I was able to sit through it all. He plays an agent who goes undercover but loses his memory but finds himself strangely comfortable in the mobster world. I thought he was very compelling there.

My favorite thing about LJK is that he plays these intense roles but appears to be such a goof in real life! :-)

@harmonyfb
I might like "Ten", it's just that I need to turn my eyes away when it gets bloody! LOL. I literally cringe when people are suffering or someone is about to be butchered.

If not for this, I'd have watched lots more of those crime-thriller shows.

Hi Susan
How is the editing getting on. You mentioned how the writer got immersed in her art and forgot to follow the brief?

Did the drawing you needed move out from the remote woods of Canada yet or better, did the computer get fixed (I guess there was a softcopy in it?)

Part 3: WRT to your "So freakin’ good!" shows. Can I say that you mean that all the elements were sufficiently attended to so that plot, characters, flow was all consistent, well developed and worked well together?

Among them I watched City Hunter, Healer, My Love From the Star, Pinocchio in full and some of Secret Love Affair and Two Weeks. Ranking them according to the feels 1) Healer, 2)MLFTS 3) Pinocchio.

OK, so you have "Pretty good!" and "Charming" shows listed. What separates "So freakin good" from these? Just a small difference, I'm guessing. But what?

The editing has been insane ! And smack against another deadline.

To answer your question about whether I sit down next to the writer when I edit - the answer is no, she's half a continent away. I could sit down with her on Google Hangouts or Skype (how all meetings get done). However, when a writer has been stretching out the time and writing what she wants, it means she's chafing under the requirements.

At that point, it's best and easiest to do the rewrites myself.

The Canada thing isn't working out - the art director in France is dealing with it.

The computer thing (for the art dealer) wasn't a problem for saving a document - we back everything up. It's a problem for computing power. Graphics are computing heavy - and we've all got pretty fancy machines with sophisticated programs. When one goes down, it's a problem. None of us can go back to an old machine from 5 years ago - computing intensity has gone up so much since then that they pretty much whine and overheat!! :-) That's what the art director is doing though...

LOL! Poor art director. So you still have to maintain your calm to reduce the meltdown. :)

Although I'm home, I've been Skyping the programming team in India or vice versa, actually. I need to test their work now and then. It does not help that they are 2.5 hours behind me, so that although it's way past 9pm for me, they are still working slightly late and are still full of beans.

So I have an idea what it's like to work with people who are not with me (physically and in other ways). Unfortunately, programming is definitely not my forte, therefore I cannot up and take the program away and re-write it myself. LOL.

I can do absolutely everything on a production. Just not as well as everyone else. I learned my lesson early on. People can screw you over with their b***s***t and unprofessionality. So, the safest backstop is to have the tools and some skill myself. I occasionally let myself down - but not usually.

I'm like that over smaller affairs like talks, presentations and sessions ... or I used to be. Nowadays I feel it's wiser to be in retirement mode and let the young uns take over more. I may hang around and mentor or supervise, but actually, I'm very bad at supervising. It's just so much easier to do it all myself, ? but then, no one else learns.

However to carry the pre-production and production single-handedly is a whole lot more to swallow. I take my hat ? off to you.

Production is for the rest of the production team. I've got a lovely producer in London who does work for the BBC who will dive in a little later to work with me to build out our entertainment resources - technical talent, tools, etc. She's doing a lot of research for us now. Together with her, we'll hire the production team - the individual producers who manage any particular element.

I manage the executive team - two head creatives, two producers. It's all a team decision. We also have a writers stable, a bunch of advisors (publishing, media strategy, marketing), and are pulling in interns now. What is currently small will eventually grow to thousands of people.

I structure the entire project and will also pull together resources for mobile apps, games, e-commerce and partnerships as well as structuring most of the deals.

However, if anything goes wrong anywhere along the line - I will jump in!

:-) Or I could just hang out here and enjoy the Kdramas. I vote for that!

0

Charming are for shows that I know are a little juvenile, a little off, but I really really loved anyway! :-)

Cantabile tomorrow was so beautifully paced and acted. It did have some weird side stories though...

Sungkyungwan Scandal had a lot of actors early in their careers - I didn't care. Still loved it.

Trot Lovers was just actually charming. It was simplistic, but put a smile on my face. Every character was believable. Beyond believable. I know those people!!

Susan,

I've often felt, and I've done this, and DB and others have done this too... that reviews/ratings need to be categorised into:

1) good (not necessarily enjoyed, but good) in terms of production/technically.

2) enjoyed (not necessarily good)

3) good and enjoyed

So do the shows you rated as good fall more into category 3?

0
0
reply

Required fields are marked *

So freakin good! would definitely be category 3.

Pretty good and Charming are 3-.

Silly but fun and Perfectly acceptable for passing time... are 2.

Nothing is in category 1 for me. If something is done well, I already like it. The same is not true for me for music. As much as I can appreciate Prince and German Opera, no just no.

On to brass tacks..
"So freakin’ bad!" - Angry Mom, Liar Game, My Secret Hotel

Of these 3, the one that was obviously bad to me was My Secret Hotel. It was the biggest disappointment to me (still) of all the shows I ever had hopes for. It was so bad it was obvious. The new writers totally mauled the original plot and could neither write a good romance nor a good detective story. The leads were so charming in themselves but they just couldn't save the show. I never felt so sad in my kdrama viewing life LOL!

Another couple I'd say was so obviously bad was Dr Stranger, and although I really tried to give it a shot... Blood ?.

Why I liked Angry Mom - I noticed that it changed its tone from solemn, (literally sepia toned scenes) to more upbeat. However I liked that it gave enough meat for discussion on bullying and corruption from a parent's perspective and in a school setting, much to think about family and parents (real, surrogate) ... and of course about a mum's love.

What was technically wrong with it?

Liar Game - I was carried away by the games, intrigued by the interactions of Do hyung and Ha Woo Jin, rooting for the relationships... I totally missed what was not done well.

I would love to be enlightened. :)

“So freakin’ bad!” – Angry Mom, Liar Game, My Secret Hotel

I was so disappointed by 'My Secret Hotel' - that first episode was great, but after the writer's untimely death, they lost the plot. :(

My "So Freaking Bad!" shows would be Blood (I just could not look away), Coffee House, and (the unpopular response) My Love from Another Star.

Blood was just a train wreck of a show. Terrible writing, terrible soundtrack, terrible plot. What a mess.

Coffee House was a confused mess, and the male lead didn't evoke any sympathy whatsoever.

And everybody else apparently loved My Love from Another Star, but I thought it was terrible. Boring, poorly-plotted, and the acting (except for the bad guy) was mediocre.
