Jang Dong-gun joins revenge film opposite Ryu Seung-ryong
by girlfriday
Jang Dong-gun (Crying Man) is in final negotiations to star in the new revenge film Seven Years’ Night, the newest outing from director Chu Chang-min of Gwanghae, the Man Who Became King (or Masquerade). Ryu Seung-ryong (Guest) has already signed on to reunite with the Gwanghae director, which makes this a pretty snazzy two-top cast to look forward to.
The movie is an adaptation of a bestselling novel of the same name by writer Jung Yoo-jung, about a man who accidentally kills a young girl, and the girl’s father who then plots a seven-year revenge scheme to kill the first man’s son. Yeesh, that sounds dark. I think it’s the seven years of careful, methodical murder-planning that gives me chills.
Ryu Seung-ryong will play the man who accidentally kills Jang Dong-gun’s daughter, and suffers enormous guilt as a result. Jang Dong-gun has been cast as the dad who spends seven years plotting the perfect revenge against Ryu Seung-ryong, and sets out to kill his son. I… don’t know who I’m supposed to root for in this scenario. May the best, least murderous dad win?
Seven Years’ Night plans to start shooting later this year for a 2016 release.

This story sounds like a really extra twisted cousin of Kill Bill (even the Bride didn't kill children! She only said she would have to, for things to be even between her and her ex-assassin colleagues)

""I… don’t know who I’m supposed to root for in this scenario. May the best, least murderous dad win?""
The 1st was accidental, the 2nd was intentional.... it's not so hard to choose actually.
I do not like the idea about offspring need to pay for the sins of their father but this give me chills.

The plot sounds kind of similar to Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Although I'm guessing it'll be more of an action thriller than an art house film.

The daughter is "accidently" killed and her dad is going to "intentionally" kill the son for revenge? I'm already hating this but I lup joo Ryu Seung-ryong.

Yup exactly ! Major difference between an accident vs intentional.
The film sounds scary, imagine a man planning a murder for 7 years. The character has to go to a really dark head-space in order to justify his actions despite it being scary to me it'll be an interesting journey to see on-screen though. What a role to play for an actor.

Oh ho ho ho-- You got me at Jang Dong-gun, thank you. Not much a fan of Ryu, but that man is an entirely great actor. Of a different league, no doubt. Ryu even better than Jang in terms of solely acting. But ohhhh, Jang.
[Even though his "All About Eve" Yoon Hyung-chul summarizes all my love, affection and devotion for him. That's just about it. He.]

I love you. We have our bias and they may not be the best actor out there but we do need to still acknowledge those that have great talents even when their acting is better than our bias.
