Hey there
Trying to make sense of my notes from the festival. I did put down a short about the 4 days, but there is more. Some pages have gone missing while dancing so I will have to improvise. That was actually the theme of the festival this year, imrpovising and freedom. It was great, as always. Half day picking berries, half day grooving. Still wearing the wrist band, I wonder if I can wear it until next festival? Nah, maybe I go to Viljandi again. The most hilarious concert was Blind Date, where pop musicians and folk musicians were put together and had to improvise. My selected pair came in 2nd. Well, good enough.
So, now I am back working and stuff. Not many dramas I manage to see, tried to catch bits and pieces of I Remember You in Viljandi, in secret (cause my aunt would kill me for using her internet). I like it that the characters are unique and serious, not clicheś . haven´t even caught up with Teachers´ drama. Reading recaps... ah, but I did look up all scenes ith Gwi. Man, what a juicy performance. Soo Hyuk is literally sucking the role dry. Mentions of bad editing is worrying me. Editing is supposed to reinvent the material, not kill it. It is such a shame with all the effort from the actors. Soo Eun has a really... powerful presence despite the short time she is on screen. I wish they gave her more substance.
More closely keeping an eye on the changing drama trends. Seems like ahjumma actresses are on the rise. But I am getting tired that all they can do to give actresses a position of authority is to make them cops. Cmon. There are so many positions where you can stand out and be fervent and independent. We see very little of different professions in dramas. If they are not cops they own galleries. If not that, she is a reporter or anchor in TV. If not that, she is a politician. But you don´t have to be high-up to have authority. You can have respect based on who you are and how good you are at your field...
So I am thinking, female inventor, archaeologist, industrial designer, historian... well, I know, professions are not the main thing in dramas, but you can build something more unique around them. 20 again looks very promising in that an ahjumma is rediscovering herself not because of a guy, but because of herself. What will she become? Can we all restart our lives?
Any ideas based on this?
Oh, arborist is a very cool, but dangerous profession. It gives me chills seeing a frail girl up in a 35 meter tree that could be all rotten inside and break any moment, with a big chainsaw. Leaves quite an impression. There can be heroes in any field.

But... found a clip of the pre-festival ethno-camp with participants from Camerun, Belgium, France, Argentina etc. The Camerun song. I honestly don´t know how the teachers can have total strangers play so well together in just a week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2y94ArLF2s

one more thing: new study shows only South Korea beats Estonia in gender wage gap. third is Japan. So no matter how much women excell we are not paid equally. Should I be happy we are at least not first, or sad for korean women... Norway has one of the smallest gaps, I think. let me find the study now to check.

In US, wage gap is usually because of experience gap with women choosing to stay home a few years raising children or choosing less hours. More women have jobs vs. careers. I have never, ever been paid less than the men with the same job.

In my career, I never made less than the men I worked with. In fact, in some instances, I know I was paid more. I think it has to do with what you do and how good you are at it.

Still, I think everyone should be paid a living wage...

Oh yeah, I'm in the US too.

0

There is plenty of evidence of the gender pay gap in the United States. It tends to be less in firms and organizations that have open pay policies. When salaries are secret, even among skilled professionals, the differences can be outrageous.

0

I'm in the U.S. too and as a woman, I HAVE been paid less than a man for similar work. Worse, opportunities are often more available for men than they are for women.

I remember I once had a management position at a company when the new boss (male) came in. I sat at a meeting with him while he insisted I listen to an entry-level (male) worker who he felt knew my job better than I did. I had been doing my job successfully for several years. At first, I thought there was something wrong with me, but in talking with other women at the company, we all realized it was the boss. Within a month, most of the women at the company had left. This was a small company (less than 30 employees).

Gender discrimination in the US is alive and well.

0

That has been my experience in the US and most of the world outside of Asia. But in a lot of Asian & Middle East countries, the wage gap is real. 3 or 4 years ago, I think it was LG, had their wage scales leaked, and it said in black and white that women in same job were paid less just because they were women.

0

i'm from the middle east, and i have never noticed pay gap at least in gov jobs in my country

0

No idea about government jobs, those are probably set by law. Private companies not so much. On the LG one that was leaked, they cheated - exact same job description, but different job title to cover it up. Was a mini-scandal at the time for a couple days.

0

I'm happy for you that you have not been paid less than your male co-workers, but sadly most US women cannot say the same.

The wage gap in the US does not have to do with women having less experience or having children. By the way, when men are fathers they do not have jobs, but still maintain careers... and are still paid more than many of their female co-workers.

This phenomenon has been heavily documented for decades. It's based on sexism and to a certain degree racism-- as women of color are paid even less than white women.

I've had the pleasure of being the supervisor of men who are paid more than me. Yes. Supervisor. They were men who were older than me, less educated than me, and less experienced. But they were men. It is an unfortunate part of gender inequity in the US.

0

Thank you. It was my experience in my career. Back then the wage gap was very large, but it growing smaller now. Figured out that I needed to learn about investing to make up the difference. Retired early and now teach other women about investing and have the time to get my fill of Kdrama too.

Hey everyone!

If anyone's going to be around London next weekend, the Korean Cultural Festival is happening on Sunday 9th of August at Trafalgar Square, from 12pm - 8pm.

Take a look at the official event page here, and the Facebook event page is here -- tell all your friends, etc!

I'm planning to go, so if there's anyone who doesn't have anyone to go with, just tell me :)

The course at SOAS is super-expensive. King's College also offers classes, at a better price. The course at SOAS might be better though, I'd expect them to have the best tutors.

You can also try and enter the lottery at KCCUK (I think they might have one in the autumn for a January start?), as the lucky ones that get picked get classes for free!

King's (down at the Strand) is better! Also cheaper, especially if you get an alumni/current student discount (University of London). With the alumni discount, it's £360 a year (3 terms of 10 weeks, 1.5 hours per lesson).

This is the King's page, enrolment opens mid-August. You should do it! You also get to make lots of friends, which is really fun.

Friday already, is it? Has been a busy week or two, I haven't had much time to watch shows, even less to participate in the discussions here. I'd like to apologise to those whom I still owe answers to their respective questions/posts.

Oh My Ghostess
I'm probably the only one, but I was very disappointed with the 8th episode, especially after the extremely promising 7th episode: Very lazy, uninspired writing; poorly designed throw-away characters and character assassination just for plot devices. I really hope it's just a temporary slump (in the way of the beach episodes of "Marriage Not Dating", for example).

High Society
So frustratingly disappointing as a whole. I liked many aspects of this show, but the utter lack of focus on what the show-runners actually wanted to do with it made the show pretty much unwatchable.

Oh My Ghostess: I'm actually worried with the last episode's ending. They seem to go with we're-best-friends-but-I-fall-for-the-guy-you-love. Not a development I expected since their friendship is as good as it is.

Required fields are marked *

I'm fine with the ending of the episode, actually. It's still ambiguous enough not to make me worry.

It was the first scene where it was distinctly impossible for me to say whether Bong-sun's body was run by Bong-sun or by Soon-ae, or more precisely, at which point Soon-ae left Bong-sun. Because Soon-ae's behaviour fades towards the end of the scene and Bong-sun looks much more like Bong-sun in the end (but not completely).
Together with another instance of "cold water", that might mean something (hopefully).

Prior to the episode, there was almost zero sexual or romantic chemistry between "Bong-sun" and Sun-woo, and only a tiny little bit between Bong-sun and Sun-woo. In this episode, they tried to torque it up with all the contrived outside forces, but because the writing was so clumsy, I couldn't feel it. And that made the final scene fall rather flat for me in terms of romance. But as a overall plot point scene, I'll hold my judgment for now ...

Oh my Ghostess

I still liked ep 8 but the female second lead was annoying, she is just the same flat useless character we have in every kdrama. The sous chef is pretty boring too. The drinking scenes too, but again, those really are in every kdrama.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, the answer to everything in Korean dramas is to get totally drunk or have a drinking party and get totally drunk. I watch a fair number of international movies and dramas, and Korean shows are the only ones that do that. Korean shows are also the only ones that ask if you are hungry/eating well/have enough food at least 3-4 times per episode.

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's probably just the combination of (a) the very alcohol-obsessed and (b) the emotional repressed Korean society.

The food-centric world view on the other hand is common in many other Asian countries too.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I have not seen any other country that is so food-centric in their dramas. But a Korean friend explained to me that what is usually translated as something like "are you eating well" is not REALLY asking are you eating well, it is more of a stock greeting phrase like the English "how have you been".

But the amusing part is that a recent poll by one of the Korean newspapers showed that with all the food-isms in k-dramas, that Koreans are the LEAST likely to actually be into cooking out of about 14 countries.

0

It's similar in Chinese, for example: 你吃饭了吗 (Ni3 chi1 fan4 le ma) is basically "how are you" despite the literal meaning "have you eaten yet?"

0

I began to suspect that was the case a while back, nice to have it confirmed again.

0

PD Lee was a really nice little side character (nice in terms of well done character design and portrayal) until the recent episodes. The drunken kiss confession was "meh", but in episode 8 her character was completely out of it. It had absolutely nothing to do with what we had learned about her before. And it was glaringly obvious why and what for the character was assassinated here.

There's nothing wrong (well, there is, but not that much) with a "Hong Sisters" second lead plot device character, but to build an actual character and then abuse it in that way feels just very very cheap.

Hello all:

Having made it through a super-icky Heat Wave, I now find myself longing for winter. Oh, winter, i long for you!

Dramas:

Mask -- well, it's over. Not bad. I wish they'd shown the Big Bad's motivation all along. Loved the time jump. Also wish they'd shown what happened with Loan Shark guy aka "Ahjusshi Bad Hair Piece."

I Remember You -- I really hate to see children suffering. And thinking of Min's suffering -- although Min is all grown up now-- just is so hard. Yep, this drama is hard to watch right now. So feel for the brothers.

Scholar -- Well, once again I tried to watch it. And I couldn't. Athough I love LJK and LSH. Two or three problems: First, it feels like cosplay to me. It feels like folks just walking around being costumed and doing style over substance. As if the writer knows the actors are pretty and is depending on their looks to keep us interested. Second: there is a heck of a lot of sitting around talking and not doing anything (except posing.) Movies move, dramas are about dramatics. Not sitting around talking to one's self. Three: for all the vampirisms, it doesn't really feel vampiric at all. It could be just another sageuk. Where is my worldbuilding?

Oh my ghostess!-- Oh my goodness! What a great drama! Lovely, sweet, romantic, well-rounded, well-written.

Last -- Ooh the Japanese "fight" drama with a plot. Liking this.

My Beautiful Bride -- Wow! Joo Hee's become Do Hyung's protector! There's a twist. And now financial revenge is in the mix? ooh, monetary machinations! Bank guy does banking. Love it.

Assembly was okay but I haven't returned to it since epi 2. Just not pulling me in. Perhaps because I --foolishly-- believe I already know what will happen.

High Society -- Well, it ended. It was sweet. Fluffy. Nothing new but likeable.

Gag Concert made me so happy with its Meditation gag. And I'm erally liking the Beautiful Punishment sections. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmQs9Bu2rag&feature=youtu.be

Have a great weekend, all.

Mask: my biggest gripe was that the villain changed so drastically in the final episode. I wish they'd "softened" him a little--or at least shown him a little conflicted in the previous episodes. I didn't think her letter to him (which she copied from her sister-in-law, by the way) was enough to make him realize his true feelings.

And the scene in jail? Uh, not buying it. But on the whole, I loved Mask, plot holes and all. And I'd recommend it to anyone as a worthwhile watch.

Agree on Scholar, gave up on it pretty quickly, not even bothering with the fast-forwarding I do on some dramas. Does not help I guess that I am getting really tired of vampires - even more overdone than superheroes.

Assembly - have not made up my mind on this, up to EP5. So far not showing me much, but with the dearth of good shows I have been keeping up. EP4 was better, EP5 he went back to his usual clueless floundering around.

Last - Looking good so far.

MBB - now that we finally have gotten the hero out of Groundhog Day mode, things are starting to move along much better.

Oh, yeah. Lots of posing. And characters doing stupid things because the writer was too lazy. But the soundtrack got better, and there's some interesting moments between characters (I especially liked Yang-sun's drunken conversation with her 'Hyungnim').

But it's head and shoulders over 'Blood', so I'm happy enough. :)

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today!

Melting in the summer heat here. Truly unbearable. ....... I can only imagine what KCON is going to be like in this weather! ...... To all of those attending, definitely have fun but stay hydrated!

Watched this week:

Mask - I still have fun with this. ...... Mi-yeon, truly deserves to be as miserable as she is.

I Remember You - I think about it before I watch it ..... I think about it after I watch an episode. ...... It's doing so many things right.

The Time I've Loved You - Decided to watch 2 more eps of this, so now I've watched a total of 4. ...... I've read a lot of the comments/complaints so I know where it's headed. ....... Based on what I've watched, I've concluded that Won and Hana act as they do because on some deep level they don't want to mess things up. Perhaps subconsciously, they've subscribed to the notion that a real girlfriend/boyfriend relationship and especially marriage, are where things go awry and die, specifically love and passion. ....... If this is a real fear for each of them, can you blame them for not speaking up or being so indecisive? Better to keep what you have than to lose it all, might be what they're thinking. ....... The frustration viewers are expressing (which is clearly understandable), may very well be on purpose ---- in an attempt by the writer to convey the underlying angst the characters are feeling, as they intellectually understand that they're stuck in place yet are fearful of moving forward.

Hwajeong - Totally behind on this, but I watched parts of a couple of episodes. ...... Since I totally skipped some episodes, I completely missed where Kyosan turned into a baddie or if he was a baddie all along.

That's it for now. ....... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

Happy OT all!

THE TIME WE WERE NOT IN LOVE: Finally, mercifully dropped this thing. I was in the middle of watching Ep 9 and I just. couldn't. take. it. anymore. I have no idea why I was trying to force myself to finish this. Perhaps b/c I was so excited about Ha Ji-won's return. Or perhaps b/c I was really excited about the premise (not having seen or even heard about the original before it was announced). I really wanted to like this one, but it was a little bland and off putting from the start for me. Then I kept reading the comments talking about the original so I watched it, and I think that was my mistake. After the awesomeness of the original, it was like impossible for me to enjoy the watered down K-version. But I tried to persevere. Now I'll just read the recaps (thanks HeadsNo2!) and if the finale looks promising enough perhaps I'll watch that. Otherwise, good luck to everyone else who's sticking it out and/or enjoying it.

Thankfully there's OH MY GHOSTESS--which I am enjoying immensely. I really love the improvement in Na Bong-sun’s personality. She was so easy to write off and overlook when she was just a quiet painfully shy and apologetic background character. And even though I don’t think Jo Jung-suk is getting a lot of props, I love his portrayal of Chef too!

With TTWWNIL out of my drama-watching line up, I decided to check out an older drama I’d heard good things about. So I started watching ALONE IN LOVE with the lovely Son Ye-jin and Kam Woo-sung. I am really liking it. It feels like a movie instead of a drama, which makes me a bit in awe of how they manage to do that episode after episode. It’s a 2006 drama but it doesn’t feel old at all. It’s a definite winner!

First time I catch an Open Thread in the beginning! I usually come here when there was more than 50 comments. How are you all?

I was originally planning to give a break from dramas, but I'm currently watching That Winter The Wind Blows (I'm on episode 6). I know, I know, I should have watched it before. My story with this drama is kind of curious. I watched its first two episodes two months ago and I remembered I didn't finish it, so I thought "Why not keep watching?". The cinematography is so beautiful. One of the most beautiful I have ever seen. The cast is also great. I'm happy because I had dropped three dramas before I started to watch it again.

I watched entirely j-drama Mondai no aru restaurant. In one word: brilliant. Really, really well written and with a powerful cast. Realist in its writing and acting. Almost perfect, because there is no perfect drama (ok, maybe Misaeng).

I also started Angry Mom. I have only watched 2 episodes, but it seems promising. I will probably take a long time to watch it. It is my intention, actually. My classes start on Monday and I need to watch the smallest amount of dramas possible, so Angry Mom is my drama choice for August-September (maybe -October too).

I actually think that taking too long to watch a drama with more than 12 episodes is good because you pay attention to the details. I ended up being a fan of dramas like Reply 1997 and Shut Up Flower Boy Band even though I wasn't liking them while I was watching sometimes. Internet teaches us to marathon dramas, which I don't think its right.

I'm also thinking about making a blog about dramas, or a tumblr. But I don't know yet, since I have no patience for tumblr anymore, I guess.

Have a nice weekend!

As you've already seen, That Winter The Wind Blows certainly had visually pleasing aesthetics. The clothes even matched the set decoration.

Hope you continue to enjoy the drama!

<j-drama Mondai no aru restaurant

Ah, a good one. And one that gets better as it goes along – at first I was a bit put off that it seems to single-mindedly insist that EVERY male person is somehow bad. Fortunately, this idea is toned down (at least some of the males soften up a little bit) and the drama shifts more to the bonding between the girls – which is the best thing. That they decide they can just do what they honestly want, just them together, and find happiness and fulfilment that way.

Some great casting too – Maki Yoko, Higashide Masahiro, Nikaido Fumi, Suda Masaki etc. all actors who deliver. I don't think Maki Yoko is all that popular as she often plays easily dislikable characters (never the "kawaii" girls that actresses like Ishihara Satomi or the like go for), but I'm glad she's finally getting some recognition with more lead roles recently.

@alua
Yes, it was nice that they didn't make all the guys bad (neither all the girls good all the time - like Kawana).

Their friendship is heartwarming, simply loved it!

From the cast, I only knew Mitsuki Takahata from Ao Haru Ride and Higashide Masahiro, who I saw in xxxHolic and Ao Haru Ride (by the way, her destiny is to like him and never end up with him, haha). I like his acting. I think that when actors are good looking they need to work harder to get their work recognized.

I don't need to say anything about the girls and Haiji (but I will, anyway). They are all amazing actors. Haiji expressions when he had that problem on his back were priceless! I know I shouldn't laugh of someone feeling pain, but in this case was impossible! His story with his brother was great too.

I need to search for the actors names because this is only the second J-drama I watch. Mayu Matsuoka is so pretty! The story about hikikomori is so important.

For last, I liked Yoko Maki and I thought she was super popular! Surprising to hear she's not. In the ending sequence she reminds me a lot of Go Ara.

Anyway, I loved the drama because talk about a lot of serious issues in a not so dramatic manner and realistically, from woman in workplace to hikikomori. I will stop talking about it before I sound annoying.

@kanz and @korfan
I will post about it in another Open Thread once I finish!

For Higashide, I'd recommend the film "The Kirishima Thing". Also currently watching his historical drama Hana Moyu. I think the good-looking actors that can actually act (like Higashide) don't always have such an easy ride, but there are plenty good-looking ones that seem to be cast all the time despite not being able to act particularly well.

Yoko Maki: No, I don't think she's especially popular. She often plays "tough" characters so I don't think Japanese viewers appreciate that all that much, they seem to like those that play cute, love-naïve characters a whole lot better.

Some recommendations for her doramas: Kare, Otto, Otoko Tomodachi; Tokyo Friends; Osozaki no Himawari and Saikou no Rikon. The first one touches on some pretty heavy topics (domestic abuse), the other three deal with serious issues but are more light-hearted at the same time. Tokyo Friends has some nice friendship between girls.

Nikaido Fumi and Suda Masaki have done a lot more films than dramas. Nikaido won a major acting word together with Sometani Shota (the lead in xxxHolic) at the Venice Film Festival for Himizu. Pretty much all of the actors I mention have done critically acclaimed films (including internationally), which is exactly why the casting of this drama is so solid.

By the way, since you've seen xxxHolic: Anne Watanabe is Higashide Masahiro's real-life wife. I'd recommend her recent drama Date (Japanese name: Deto - Koi to wa Donna Mono Kashira).

I know that they are married and this is the MOST AWESOME THING EVER. Anne is great on xxxHolic. My favorite couple from the drama world. Thanks for the recommendations! I will put them on my list! I heard that Date is good. About Hana Moyu...is it long, right? Where are you watching it? Is it good? Masahiro appears a lot? (haha, I guess I became a huge fan)

Yoko Maki is great on Mondai, the role fits her really well!

0

Yes, Hana Moyu is a long one. Not sure how many episodes 50? 100? They are 20 minutes each though. I don't normally watch dramas this long but the approx. 12 episodes I have seen are really quite good, I'm sort of interested in the era of history they are covering and the casting is great. Higashide Masahiro has one of the lead roles, but I think he first appears in the 2nd or 3rd episode and begins to feature more prominently only a couple episodes later. He marries the main character Fumi, from whose point of view the story is told. The lead actress by the way is Inoue Mao, who is originally of Boys of Flowers fame, but is actually becoming one of Japan's most solid actresses. She's great in this drama, she was spectacular in the film Rebirth and very good in Snow White Murder Case too. Her character in Hana Moyu is great.

So sad Mask ended, but what an ending it was!!!

In contrast to my comment about Eun Dong's ending last week , I was satisfied with the last episode. Not just bc of the "happy ending" but bc the writer saw fit to close all the loops and complete the story.
-The villain got punished (they could have done more, IMO, but I'll accept the outcome)
-The whole story was revealed. I felt sad for Eun Ha's father. I mean, to learn about his daughter's fate in such a manner is just cruel.
-I have mixed feelings about the sister's outcome. She was emotionally fragile, stupid, meddling and quite needy for love. But I didn't see a need for her life to end. Maybe a failed attempt would be enough. IDK. Issues of suicide are tough, I never understood the psychology behind it. Ultimately it helps no one, really.
-Total cuteness at the end, with the little someone :)))) Could not stop grinning. They were such a cute trio!!!

I don't know what else to watch now. I went back to watching the Three Musketeers, quite enjoyable actually.

I also have never really understood the whole suicide thing or the mentality behind it.

As far as other shows, I have been digging into some older shows, just because there is so little on right now that I care about. Just started City Hall (2009) - up to EP5 and seems pretty good so far.

The City Hall was one of my first K-dramas and it is still my favourite. It has mature characters who show growth and development over the course of the drama. They are placed in adult situations and react to these situations like adults. I especially like its take on what romance is like for people in their thirties who both have been around the block more than once. It reminds me of one of those classic Hollywood screwball comedies of the 1930's where everyone gives as good as they get. Enjoy!

Οne of my first k-dramas, too! I thought this kind of series was the norm for the country's TV... How silly of me! Anyway, one of the best OTPs, wonderful OST and the writer gives us her best and more mature work. I still love it like crazy! :-)
But the fact that she's the same person who conceived and "gave birth" to The Heirs is by far the strangest thing about her...The elder "child" was so much smarter and rational, LOL

I agree totally. I, too, thought that this kind of series was the norm for Korean TV and spent a long time looking for another series that made me feel like The City Hall. I have come to the conclusion that it's a one-off for me. There have been series I've liked but none like it. I often re-watch it whenever I feel like breaking up with K-drama which has been occurring more and more frequently these days.

Strange week. I almost hesitate to post this, because I have to be careful, but I think this is a fairly safe place to confess—I have some grandkids we are not allowed to see. I'm not going to go into it, but 2 weeks ago a common friend got to see them and my granddaughter contacted me for a message chat (of 3 sentences) before she had to leave. I am thankful to read that she is doing well and still remembers us fondly. (I love her—will always love her—and hope & pray someday her mother's heart will soften and allow us to be a part of her life.) HOWEVER, one of my memories with her was the 2 of us watching “Inyuasha” (sp?) together and eating popcorn about four years ago when she was allowed to have regular visits. I also gave her a DVD set of “Rooftop Prince” one Christmas, so I'm hoping we have the love of foreign movies/tv still in common. I just emailed her the web address of my latest cartoon. I hope her mom hasn't shut down her internet accessibility. And I hope she sees the shout out I published for her in my toon.

Who knew me drawing freelance for DramaFever would make it possible for me to communicate with her?

http://www.dramafever.com/news/k-toon-convenience-store-clerk-vampire-episode-3/

is the address of my latest K-Toon, Convenience Store Clerk Vampire.

And I want to thank all the drama beanies who suggested casting for this (my latest) toon.
I listened to you, 4D, and put Kang Ha Neul in as the 2nd lead. (Really, this was all you. I never even thought of him, but then I found the best (and easiest) actual photos of him that I photo shopped into the P-Mart.

And thanks to Redfox, for suggesting Park Ki Woong—who I cast as Man Soo's cousin. (And who had a cameo in episode 2.)

Thanks again, guys!
(And the biggest kick of my “cartoon career” was when I read a frustrated comment on facebook of a young woman whining because she'd googled “My Brother, the Flower Boy,” the title of one of my toons, looking to locate it, thinking it was a real drama, and she couldn't find anywhere to watch it. (“I tried hulu, allkoreandrama, and viki, and nobody's got it.”)

Poor girl. That's because it doesn't exist, except in cartoon form.

Ok, so I was watching Last and suddenly an idea struck me, I'm not sure where it came from it's almost as if the idea was wandering around the ether waiting for a receptive mind. The idea was a Korean version of the legend of King Arthur borrowing heavily from but not necessarily following completely T.H. White's The Once and Future King my personal favorite version, with some things different for instance I'd have to pick someone else for Lancelot if it followed T.H. White completely. Despite the fact this will never see the light of day as I don't know any Korean t.v. executives, I have no money to help fund it, as it would probably the most expensive thing made for t.v. anywhere ever, unless everyone agreed to take massive pay cuts, even if I had those first two things I have no idea if the average Korean has even heard of King Arthur let alone how interested they'd be. That being said would you like to see my potential cast and writers/directors, I hope you said yes because I'm posting it anyway.

Yoon Kye-sang as King Arthur
Choi Min-soo as Merlin
Song Joong-ki as Sir Lancelot
Lee Bum-soo as Sir Galahad
Cha Seung-won as Sir Percival
Seo In-guk as Sir Kay
Hwang Jung-min as Sir Gareth
Moon Chae-won as Lady Guinevere
and these two are a bit of a twist
Han Groo as Sir Bors
Ha Ji-won as Sir Gawain

Writen by three people who I have no idea if they've ever writen as part of a team but this would be a massive project that needed multiple writers, Song Ji-na, Seo Sook-hyung and Noh Hee-kyung.

Directed by a team of three Kim Byung-soo, Lee Jung-sub, Kim Jin-woo

See perfect and incredibly expensive for something I have no idea if the Korean people would be interested in. It'll never see the light of day but a man can dream can't he? So what do you think? Do you have any similar ideas?

Mask- There was a time I loved this but I ended up just skimming the last two episodes.

Last- I personally loved it but we'll if I continue next week.

I haven't finished anything else yet.

Koreans probably know about the Arthurian cycle. I'd say do the story anyway. Best to have something ready. Just in case. And eh, there are all kinds of production companies out there.

My fave Arthurian story is Parsifal by Wolfram Von eschenbach. My love for Parsifal knows no bounds.

Can you believe it’s the last day in July?

I am keeping pace with My Beautiful Bride – *spoilers* I am totally on Team Jin Sook and women – their back-atcha style of putting to use the best of everything they’ve learned over the years to take down the very ones who used and abused them, well even Do Hyung’s gotta be impressed. When the trunk of the black sedan opened to give Glove the ride of his life, I jumped up and shouted “Fighting!” What is Joo Young’s turdy brother going to do when he finds out she is alive and well when he’s been dancing on the table tops of his new insurance-purchased restaurant? Mother Moon, crafty and talented, is pulling the strings of Seryo Construction and the bank, but to what end? And those are just the relatives. I look forward to my front seat view as Do Hyung takes every last one of the Shadow-y sharks down in UDT style revenge.

Has anyone seen Abnormal Summit ep 53 with the six new panel members plus six of the original members? I was impressed with Yuta from Japan, the youngest by far at 20, he held his own in soccer and discussion. I’m not sure about the other five, yet, if they will gel with those already on board. I have all but given up hope on subs for Where Is My Friend’s Home, the spin-off of AS.

The Genius season 4 episode 5 – amazing game and strategy. I’ve been surprised every episode this season by who gets eliminated. Hyunmin is one of my favorites. Jungmoon memorized the first 100 decimal numbers of pi. For Fun. It was the secret pattern for the game. Wow.

High Society – how many ways can the words love, reality, deal with, and me, myself, and I be used to express one’s position in chaebol land?

I Remember You - a very sad episode.

Looking forward to Infinity Challenge Music Festival rehearsal clashes and fits this week.

That is a whole 'nother tangent that has barely been touched, but certainly has a huge bearing on what is behind the bank and ghost company. Remember when Do Hyung told his mother he couldn't attend her (2nd) wedding? There must be a connection with who the step-daddy is.

K-tv has completely replaced all other viewing in my world, except Downton Abbey which won't be on again until January 2016. Yep, that's what one show back in 2012 led to...

I did not quite get why Joo Young's brother was so hot on getting the insurance money so fast. Like he knows something, or maybe is not who he seems to be. Or maybe he is just a total jerk.

And why don't they ever do DNA tests on unidentifiable bodies in k-dramas?

Happy OT all!

THE TIME WE WERE NOT IN LOVE: Finally, mercifully dropped this thing. I was in the middle of watching Ep 9 and I just. couldn’t. take. it. anymore. I have no idea why I was trying to force myself to finish this. Perhaps b/c I was so excited about Ha Ji-won’s return. Now I’ll just read the recaps (thanks HeadsNo2!) and if the finale looks promising enough perhaps I’ll watch that. Otherwise, good luck to everyone else who’s sticking it out and/or enjoying it.

Thankfully there’s OH MY GHOSTESS–which I am enjoying immensely.

I Remember You/Hello Monster - This has risen to number 1 for me. Good in every area. Even the music is appropriate and good for each scene. All characters consistent and growing or growing on me no matter how 'bad' they are. I love how the story just keeps building on itself to give more richness to the viewer. No wasted time or wasted characters. The genius psychopaths are to die for... if only we could have them dissecting every convoluted kdrama crime crime Heheheh! There would be such amazing intellectual exchanges with a clear path mapped out as to why and how a perpetrator did or would do something and in a most deadpan and unemotional way. Seo In Gook is just so good.

Oh My Ghost(ess) - I'd like to have the removal of the need to possess someone so that we don't have possession, but still get resolution for both ghost and host. I'm waiting impatiently for tonight's installment.

Mask - ****SPOILERS **** Well it was a sloooow wrap.... and is it weird to say this?... but I felt there was TOO much fan service! LOL. It was mainly OTP as filler in the last 2 episodes with bouts of Mi Yeon vascillating between threatening and pleading or whatever it was she was doing. And Seok Hoon still trying to appear as a big, bad something.

Because of Mi Yeon, the ending was not sweet but bitter-sweet. And I am not convinced that if Mi Yeon alive could not persuade Seok Hoon to turn himself in, that Mi Yeon dead and guilt was enough to change his mind. The OTP were great, but I'm glad it's over. I started to cringe and FFD or walk off when they began to do sugary personal stuff for each other. Too cheesy. If ever I choose to re-watch, it will be with FFD to OTP moments and only to those moments up to episode 18. All the rest of the show can safely be forgotten, with no regrets. The ending with the kid was nice though... the kind of ending some of us hoped for in Healer but it ran out of time. Mask if it had nothing else, had too much time!!!

Midnight Diner - ****SPOILERS **** It did not really hit the warm-hearted vein in the last 2 episodes (5 and 6). Although the acting was OK, I could not relate to or commiserate with a parent who refuses to allow his child to experience grief and help her through it. I feel it's a cop out that the adult may claim to be protecting the child from pain, when he is actually a coward and protecting himself from hurting.

Similarly I cannot support the main protagonist in the last episode or the theme that it's OK to eat as much as you want of what you want, because you only live once (or something like that). The reasons for the dieting were lame and shallow, except for the part where it was in memory of the friend. I felt that good health should have been the reason for self-control, and self-control should have been exercised for it's own sake!!! But... no....

The Time I Loved You/The Time We Were Not In Love - I only want to say 3 things: 1)it's too...

Just finished watching the final episode of Mask. And I really loved it! It somehow makes up for all the plot holes.
SPOILERS DOWN THERE:

Oh, Miyeon. *sigh* I guess I liked her after all, even though she was way obsessed with her husband. She's frustrating, but her misery hit all the right spots in my heart. Plus, the fact that she is willing to own up for her brother just increases my love for her. I love sibling loyalty. It was sad for her to die, but it's the push to make Seokhoon own up, and show a more humane side to us.
For Seokhoon...well he convinced me that he wasn't as much as a devil as I'd thought. He was already brimming tears when he read the letter. And the tears of regret were spot on. I liked how he'd stuck Miyeon's photograph in his book in jail: "Someone I'll meet soon."
As for our OTP: Jisook X Minwoo, they're as adorable as usual, but I think that all the "do-you-really-have-to-go" thing before the press conference was kinda unnecessary because they got on well even their lives were separated. I didn't really like the time jump thing when they had a daughter either, but did you realize? Their daughter's name is their ship name! (Minsook) *fangirls* That's cute. So at the end of the day, I love this couple wholly, and their happy ending is truly deserved. ♥
SPOILERS ENDED

Overall, I love this drama even though it had its flaws. This is my first time completing a melodrama, by the way! Okay I gotta stop rambling...I know I'm supposed to do this at the recap site but lollypip hasn't posted it yet.

I think I'll some time to think about Mask before picking up Oh My Ghostess. I have a slight hangover, just slightly, because I feel...contented. :)

Mask: I'm so happy with the ending , though I feel like it could have ended with just 16 episodes. Soo Ae is really beautiful, I don't know why I didn't realized it when watching A thousand day or queen of ambition.

The Time I’ve Loved You: I'm beyond frustrated with this drama !!!!! I cannot stand Seo-hoo, I despise this rich douchbagy guy, stubborn man-child attitude so bady OMG !!!! Was the character that annoying in the original version ? And Hana... Girl, you need to take a break, drop both of these guys and find yourself !!!

I'm kind of an Alexannder McQueen fangirl and it was a LOT to take in all at once, and to my great embarrassment I ended up feeling slightly emotional at the end. Wanted to go again today but the jet lag has finally caught up with me so it's out of the question until I get a few more hours of sleep.

As for dramas - I finished High Society before getting on the plane, and it did absolutely nothing to move me from my original opinion that it was a Nice Guy knockoff that got way too big for its britches and intended to do a Grapevine-ish social commentary, but without any of the self-awareness, humour or, for that matter, good acting.

Scholar Who Walks the Night - Despite its cheesiness, sloppy writing and obvious flaws, it remains weirdly addictive. That's not a result of writing, but the actors pulling through despite everything - especially Lee Soo-hyuk and Lee Yubi, whose characters on paper would irritate me to death, but who somehow (mainly through superhuman levels of charm and chemistry) keep them watchable. I hope to god they get better roles in the future. (and can Yang-sun's father bite it soon, please, she needs some impetus to be something other than a damsel in distress and he's pretty much useless).

I'm crashing now, good night (or good late afternoon to London beanies) everyone!

Harsh, but not inappropriate.

I struggle a little bit with the "Nice Guy" comparison, simply because "Nice Guy" was a mess of its own and was a completely different genre (even if I still don't know what genre "High Society" actually was).

Nice Guy was far from perfect, but it did have a far simpler and more coherent story, and resolutions that felt earned. And honestly, there were FAR too many similar story elements for that comparison not to come to mind. (is this really the same writer who was responsible for Can We Get Married, because wow, what a fall in quality)

I agree with the coherent and simple part, but not with the resolutions. Sorry, but absolution by amnesia is not "earned resolution" territory where I come from.

There are indeed some similar elements, but we are talking about K-drama here, where plot variety is not particularly impressive. Take two Candy stories and they will be much more similar than NG and HC.

The most important element in NG is the villain Han Jae-hee (quite an original villain at that), the show is mostly about her relationship to Ma-ru. Ma-ru is a relatively straight forward revenge plot character. Eun-gi is your stock ice princess (until Amnesia No.1). This constellation, and the character disposition, are completely different from HC. (Calling "Ugly Alert" a daily drama knock-off of "Nice Guy" would be much more accurate.)

Apart from some broad similarities (poor guy exploits rich girl and falls in love with her), there are some unintended similarities: fast and shallow romance plots, incoherent characters, for example.

As for "Can We Get Married", well, the show had some focus issues too, but at least the characters where consistent. The number of featured relationships was smaller and those were more interwoven. And: The acting and the production was much better.

Have been diverting into K-movies for a while. Managed to watch The Admiral (not exactly my favorite but I'm enjoying Choi Min-Shik), Ode to My Father (kinda remind me of Forrest Gump. So sorry Hwang Jung Min, I prefer Tom Hanks this time), The Face Reader (can't stop thinking how star-struck all young actors who have worked with SongKang Ho must have felt. I feel you guys), The Thieves (enjoying Jun Ji Hyun but not the rest), and now watching The Grand Heist for the love of Cha Tae-Hyun. I'm not usually into sageuk so it's a pleasant surprise that I actually binge-watch them.
Also managed to finish reading The Girl on The Train (with a bit of cheating in the end since the plot moves sooooo slooowlyyy). I don't understand why people said it's a faster-paced Gone Girl. But my issue is actually the characters. There's no one I care to root for.

hey if you watched The Admiral, you should probably try the director's previous film, War of the Arrows.

It wasn't as huge a hit (still a pretty big hit though) but it is by far the superior film.

Hello everyone! Happy OT!

Mask: Ah.. a bit disappointed with the ending and the writer even though it was indeed good ending that tried to fix all loop holes.. But then, I feel it was a bit rushed. They should have shown Suk Hoon's motivation sooner, not 30mins into the finale.. Mi Yeon is really miserable. Devil OTP are really miserable human beings that should have stopped their misdeeds, but can't. Min Woo-Ji Sook OTP, well, can't say I'm satisfied with their romance where they act more like high school lovers than husband and wife, but they definitely keep me glued to the screen due to numerous gratuitous OTP scenes. Dare I say Devil OTP characters are actually more interesting than the OTP and it drives the plot forward (but I still love the OTP!). Ah, BTW they didn't explain if EH and JS related at all? So Show explains that they're doppelganger and leaves us just with that? Why no one in this drama ever asks why they're so similar?

All in all, I enjoy watching this, I don't regret a bit, it was overly dramatic sometimes and doesn't make sense at the other times, but it has enough cuteness and sweetness to keep me watching. All 4 leads have done a good job and thanks to this drama I discover Soo Ae and I enjoy watching Yeon Jung Hoon, Joo Ji Hoon and Yoo In Young a lot! Definitely will keep an eye on their next projects!

Midnight Diner: I just started it with ep 1! Not really sure with the direction/development, but the format and storytelling are fresh, maybe because it's from J-dorama adaptation. I also like foodie dramas in general, so will definitely keep watching.

Scholar Who Walks The Night: I had few alternate titles:
Sageuk Music Director Who Messes Up The Music
Scholar Who Only Cares for Romance
Scholar Who Walks and Acts Prettily

By the way, I feel Kim So Eun is seriously underused in this one. I think she only got 5-10mins screentime per episode, and they called her the second lead? Even Soo Hyang has more screentime than her.. The mystery shouldn't only focused on That One Memorandum, but also her character (if she's doppelganger/vampire or what).

Happy Friday, everyone. It has been a big week or me, so I'm glad it's coming to an end. It's hot here too, so my plan is to escape to the mountains in the next few days. It will be fun to be there all by myself. Do you ever get tired of taking care of everything/everyone? I know I do.

Watched:
High Society--Cute ending. I keep wondering, in Korean, does, "Let's live together." mean "Let's get married?" I have noticed this in several dramas--that the marriage proposal was expressed as, "Let's live together." If so, it just doesn't translate that well, since that phrase has another meaning in English.

I Remember You--Such creepy characters. I love it. But why did the writers make the female cop such a dingbat? Walking alone in a remote place when she knows she is in danger? What woman does that?

Mask--All that mahkjang and then that ending? Sappy. I did enjoy the ride for the most part, but it's not a rewatch. As pretty as the everyone thought the men in the drama were, I think the women were gorgeous. And good actresses too. I enjoyed them.

Ghostess--Marathoned to catch up. Very cute. Of course, I am confused about this whole curse of the virgin thing. You mean, if a woman is a virgin, she can't pass to heaven? What about nuns? What about young girls? The idea is kind of sickening, if you think about it.

Discovery of Love--Marathoning this to get it off my favorites list. I like it, but I keep falling asleep during it. Does that mean anything?

That's it drama-wise. I watched "No Breathing", the movie. It was okay. Seemed made for TV. Was it in the theaters in Korea?

I've wondered about the "let's live together" thing also. While I unfortunately don't speak Korean, I've assumed for a while now that this phrase is indeed a marriage proposal. ...... If I am incorrect to assume this, certainly any clarification by our Korean-speaking, beanie friends would be appreciated.

I think the virgin thing is only if the girl hasn't felt/received the love and fulfillment etc of a true (physical) love. Nuns, on the other hand, have found a higher love even when alive. A spiritual love they were committed to even before they died. Virgin ghosts are connected to the hope of a physical encounter. Young girls wouldn't count because they are prepubescent when sexual longing hasn't really risen to the surface yet. Am not sure if it's about getting to heaven, though. Might be just about committment to moving to the next phase. The virgin ghost is stuck on earth mostly through her own emotional state. Not through anything outside of herself. I think male virgin ghosts have the same issues as well. From what i can see from the "getting a wife for your dead virgin son" stuff I've seen in some Asian movies.

Ghostess

The virgin grudge is just her theory, it will not be the real reason she has not moved on, besides, it's more like it was something she resented not having tried, so she felt it could be her grudge but nowhere it's said to be a true thing in the drama.

@ktiep
"You mean, if a woman is a virgin, she can’t pass to heaven? What about nuns?"

I looked this up and posted the following last week...
"I was wondering if it was true that so much store was set by losing one’s virginity. It’s just too weird and so not right. Being a virgin is fine and extremely healthy! So I looked up ‘virgin ghosts’ just to find out the popular belief about them. And here’s the thing... it’s not because the ghosts are virgins per se that gives them dissatisfaction in death... it is because society has made being married and having a family such an important way to define oneself if one is female, that they felt cheated out of fulfilling their role as wives and mothers. So although there are virgin male ghosts, these are very rare. They probably did not face that much societal pressure LOL!

Now then, when we come to think of it, is it not a fallacy then that Soon Ae could ever feel or be truly fulfilled by using Bong Sun’s body and also using Chef “to lose her virginity” since in the end, Soon Ae will never be a wife or a mother. It is also impossible for Soon Ae to be the one who loses her virginity since she has no body... will be poor Bong Sun who does. It’s a lose-lose-lose situation for both the girls and Chef!!!!" And just last night's episode Soon Ae was mistakenly calling it win-win. *sigh*

MASK
**Spoiler ahead**
The drama resolves beautifully, though some suggestive plots heavily hinted in the drama aren't persued after all, such as JiSeok might be another lost daughter. I guess they have not enough time, or think better of using these plots. I'm sad that MiYeon has to die. Though I don't like SoekHoon, I sympathize with his loss of Miyeon. The actor and actress portray the roles beautifully. I like MiYeon much better here than in You From Another Star, where she just very briefly appears and whose character is rather competitive toward Choen SongYi (Jyun JiHyun). The MiYeon actress is beautiful too. Also it's the first time I see SooAe, and now I understand the glad reaction over the posts when SooAe signed on to this drama. She is simply amazing, her acting is superb, and she is beautiful with such a great melting smile. She has one of the most charming smiles I've ever seen. And, oh, the chemistry with Joon JiHun is so great. I almost wish that they date, but realize that JiHun is dating the Brown Eyed Girl, Ga In. By the way, in real life, SeokHon is Han Ga In' husband (another Ga In, not the one JiHun seeing) and they are so lovely together. I love how they play with each other at I Hear Your Voice leading actress's wedding. Their loves for each other is simply very visible. It's so lovely. SooAe should have dental commercial films or any CF that have her smile widely. Her smile literally brighten your day.

Feeling a little drama malaise right now, as dramas I am watching have been wrapping up, and the ones taking their place aren't interesting me. But that's par for the course, it tends to be feast or famine.

Mask - well, unlike Secret, I'm just not all that sure of its re-watch-ability. The OTP is cute and I liked both of their character's development, the bad couple is compelling, but it's nowhere near as well-crafted a story as Secret. This one ends up in the "middle of the road" pile for me.

Still really enjoying I Remember You. I like the development of the OTP's relationship, the psychopaths that elicit our sympathy, the growth of the male lead, and the female lead's strength - however, she still ends up needing to be rescued, you know? And maybe for the second time now? I think that was one thing that Mask balanced nicely - the hero was the one who needed to be rescued at the beginning, and towards the end he stepped up to rescue the heroine.

And a little bit of venting about Oh My Ghostess. I really wanted to like this show, but the whole possession thing really muddies the romantic relationship(s). I would have liked it better if while one was in control, the other knew what was going on. As it is, Soon-ae, the ghost has this choice; when she's not in control, she is out of the body and can observe. On the other hand, Bong-sun doesn't know what is going on while Soon-ae is in her body. The only thing I can think of now that would make me more comfortable with the plot would be for Soon-ae to leave Bong-sun's body alone and make it her mission (for closure) to advise her. The progression then would be a happy ending with a little bittersweet for Bong-sun, and a bittersweet with some happiness ending for Soon-ae as she departs this realm. Really, is there much more that can be expected? I'm ready for the writer to stop blurring the lines here.

Hi, beanies! Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a good week and will enjoy the weekend!

I'm still happily watching Oh My Ghostess. It's delightful, fun and charming. Glad we finally got the consent from Bong-sun and hope we'll witness a beautiful friendship growing between her and Soon-ae. I actually squealed when Soon-ae stepped out of Bong-sun's body and allowed her to experience the kiss. So touching! On the other hand, why can she suddenly come and go as she pleases, although earlier Soon-ae was sort of 'tied' to Bon-sun? Oh, and I'm so sad for Cordon! Why so little attention to him, show?

I wasn't planning on watching Scholar, but I watched the movie Twenty, fell in love with Lee Yu-bi, remembered she was in the new drama... and I got hooked! I love the camp, the cheese, the pacing. OST is a bit off, but oh, well. I'm enjoying the ride, especially since the cast is doing a great job.

And speaking of some things leading to others... Well, I'm officially a fan of Lee Jun-ki. I've never seen him in anything else, but one smoldering vampire look from him, and I was knee deep. That's why I've also started Arang and the Magistrate. To be fair, two fusion sageuks simultaneously are a bit too much. But while I wait for new episodes of SWWTN, Arang helps to quench the thirst.

Which means that I've stalled on Pasta. I'm halfway through but can't find any motivation to continue.

That's it! Happy drama watching everybody!

My current rant against OMG is that we are still not told why Soon Ae left Bong Sun during the kiss. I was so looking forward to this episode to hear what she says (to herself or Bong Sun) about why she was out of her body suddenly. It looked like it was involuntary and not voluntary.

If the former, then, what makes her think she can go all the way with Chef without being evicted once again? I'm somehow not convinced that it was voluntary.

I too would like the whole relationship situation get resolved without anymore possession except maybe to save a life or something... and something like that may be cropping up in future episodes if we have an evil spirit to contend with!!!!

Hey, Beanies! Happy Friday to you all. :)

This week I've spent a lot of time on Bandcamp.com, noodling around & looking for new bands. I've found several based in Seoul. My current favorites are:

BaekMa (especially the track "Miss Mess")
New Blue Death (esp "Love & Sex")
Feverdogs ("Song for Kyung Sung)
Patients ("Let's Drive Let's Go")

Let's hear it for the internet, without which I'd never have heard of these bands! :dances:

What I've Been Watching:

I Remember You/Hello Monster: I wish I was disciplined enough to wait until it was finished so I could binge it all - the wait between weeks seems never-ending. I like being proven right, and I LOVE that they are muddying up the waters by suggesting that all the serial killings are of people who "needed killin' (aka "don't you go killin' nobody that don't need killin', now")

The layers of guilt and rationalization are heart-breaking and scary at the same time. Can't wait to see how it ends.

Scholar Who Walks the Night: Glad to see the soundtrack has backed off a bit. It's made the whole thing much more enjoyable. Gwi and his glam-rock evil continues to amuse me - does he go shirtless because he's showing off his beautiful abs, or is he just too lazy to get dressed?

Killjoys (US): Love this show - it's super-fun, with sexy bounty hunters & interesting problems. In space.

Dark Matter(US): Complicated space show about whether or not we're the sum of our memories. If we lose them, do we lose ourselves?

Gangnam Blues: I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was really good, and heart-breaking in the process (something gangster movies seldom are).

The Host: Eh. It was ok. I thought it was a little heavy-handed, but not bad.

K-drama Moments:

Last week the whole family went to a Korean food meetup & ate ourselves sick. The big hit of the night was Dakbokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew), which I've already made for supper this week. :)

I also got to try makgeolli, which to my surprise was delicious (and fattening! Good grief, that was a lot of calories).

These are the kinds of things I find myself wondering.

Like, where does Mr. Night Scholar get all his silver ingots? I mean, does he have his own mines? If he had his own mines, how come the palace (and in turn, Gwi) didn't know about it?

Why hasn't anybody thought to copy out the "memorandum"? For that matter, why hasn't Mr. Night Scholar come up with a halfway decent plan of his own instead of hanging his hopes on the notes of a guy who got killed by the vampire 120 years ago. Clearly, his plan wasn't all that and a bag of chips.

Isn't there gunpowder at this point in history? Surely somebody could throw a bomb down in Gwi's lair while he's asleep in the daytime.

well, our night scholar is 120 years old and has never had to spend money on food in that time.....and looking at Gwi, I guess vampires can be cheapskates about things like housing (dank cave) or clothes (go shirtless/half-dressed a lot). 120 years of savings would be a lot of money!

but seriously, in episode 1 I seem to remember Yang-sun mentioning that the Eumseokgeol scholar made his money in trade with China.

I'm kind of meh on the drama front right now.
Even "Oh My Ghostess" has let me down in the last episode.

But....I'm still enjoying Variety Shows!

The Genius 4 Is chaos, strategy, alliances and MAYHEM! It's delicious to watch. More! MOARRRRRR.

I have a soft spot in my heart for "Running Man" but I'm thinking about dropping it and I've already dropped "Run, Brother!".

1N2D - I love when PD is part of the program. Revenge for all the suffering! They are filming in L.A. soon!!

I wish I could watch "Law Of The Jungle" with reliable Eng Subs. I'll wait until I find a season to marathon and then I'll look like a panda for a week.

I dropped "Happy Together" because they stopped doing the late night restaurant part.

I love SNL and Witch Hunt...maybe I just like Shin Dong Yup. I also like Yu Huiyeol. My 2 ahjussi loves.

It's strange that I've never watched Gag Concert before.

I haven't been won over by any of this summer's dramas. The Time I Loved You, I think is slow because it is a Taiwanese adaption. The Taiwanese dramas take at least twice as many episodes to tell the same story that a Korean drama would tell. It's a totally different genre, relying less on suspenseful plotting and more on a sort of grazing tour of the landscape. I think the problem has been that it didn't get converted into the Korean storytelling style, so we go into it expecting some suspense and tension, but getting the low-key, organic shifts of everyday life.

Anyone else noticed the pro-pornography comments in some of the shows lately? I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised considering any female Kpop video out there, but since they blur knives to avoid scaring the audience in some of the shows, it seems oddly like a PPL, which is kind of an alarming thought.

King of High School tried to normalize it with Jung So-Young telling Lee Min-Seok that it was normal for his age, and almost encouraging him in it, in Healer, Seo Jung-Hoo got a locker full as a reward for good training, and that conversation in Hello Monster about Lee Hyun's "bird files" on his computer to name a few.

It's obviously not the only objectification of the female, as the common makeover/shopping trip, or calling the heroine "my woman" instead of girlfriend, or picking up the girl who somehow can't walk without tripping or is too weak to walk by herself or has injured herself on flat pavement even though the males never do...

I like seeing more respect for women...

I noticed that in Oh My Ghostesss... Bong-su being shut in a cold place for an hour or two apparently renders her incapable of walking. I like that show, but I rolled by eyes at that. I mean, support her when she's walking bit piggy-bagging unless she's got a broken leg just seems silly. Or is this really a common thing in Korea? Don't get me started on females that no longer able to even stand once they have encountered the pretty boy of their dreams (although this is usually the worst in TW dramas).

Maybe that is a thing ...

Last week during a meeting with one of the students whose master thesis I supervise, he told me that his girlfriend collapsed after a 3 km walk through the town.

She had been back to her home country (China) during the spring and her mother had told her that she had to lose 20 pounds ("Grapevine" anyone?). This young woman had been lean and athletic before, 1.73m and around 63kg, did play volleyball and badminton. She managed to reduce her weight to 55kg already and is still on a diet, because supposedly, she's still too fat.

She's no longer able to do any sports and she has difficulties to climb even short stairs, but that's okay. She's getting encouragement and envy from her friends (minus her boyfriend) for being so very disciplined and commendable.

Trying to follow your train of thought here and link it to females being carried like dolls ... does this mean that your student's friend's family decided her weight was a problem and as a result she has made herself so weak that she collapsed and has to be carried around? And this is a cause for approval?

For me, it was quite a shock that her circle of friends -- who is heavily influenced by Chinese and Korean ideals of beauty -- has no second thoughts about praising and encouraging her for ruining her health.

Of course, I look at it from a rather ignorant cultural unaware (and western) point of view.

I understand that, for an unmarried woman in her mid/late 20s, health and physical self-reliance might be secondary compared to compliance to beauty standards.

Other than her dramatic weight loss, her loss of interest in food (which is something her friends did find somewhat alarming), she was also encouraged to stop wearing sneakers all the time, and go for shoes that are especially designed to make it hard to walk in them.

It seems to me that "frail and dependent" is not just a by-effect of that ideal of beauty, it is part of the concept.
A woman who is weak and has to be carried around is not just a good plot device source for your K-drama romance, she is considered attractive because she is weak and frail.

0

Thanks Jon G. I find the acceptance of that concept rather chilling as something that leads to additional stress, more reasons to feel a failure and justification for having an eating disorder. I have not actually come across this concept touted as the thing to go for in my largely Asian culture, fortunately.

@Arashi

I like the point you are making, and I've felt it too... not only with how women are 'made into objects' and thus the idea to 'use' women is made to sound ok... and not only in dramas but in lots of media, entertainment, songs, so-called art... The problem lies in making something which is objectionable, such as "making use of persons as things", an occurrence that is so common, it gains acceptance and becomes unquestioned. This is one insidious way that evil takes hold ...As a sense of something being wrong is dulled in the consciousness of many, and something that shouldn't is allowed a free pass.

I'm not conservative (at all!!) but now you notice the weird combination of sexual frustration and overconservative facade of kdramas and k-pop culture? By korean pop culture (subculture) I mean the commixture of music, dramas and reality shows. Girlbands and boybands (some of the members of which are underaged) in choreographies inspired by second-rate stript joints on the stage and underneath audience of middle-aged or older people cheering them approvingly!! A police show where knives aren't to be shown but huge swords are fine, rom-coms where the girl is half-naked but sex-scenes are forbidden, family series that respect for the elders is preached but everyone gets blind drunk, kdramas where it's fine to have romantic interest for a... high school student. I don't mind the acceptance of pornography as a fact of life. Unfortunately it's been here before us and will be here long after us and it's unrelated to the grade of sexual liberation of a society. It's the peculiar definition of what is socially accepted and what is passable from the censorship that I don't get. As far as the "woman" thing you mention, I think it's a linguistic, cultural thing. All words do not have the same meaning or the same "charge" in all languages. In many languages "my woman" or "my man" means "my wife" or "my husband".

Crazy busy Friday and I am behind in starting on dramas I want to watch such as Hello Monster/I Remember You.

I did catch an episode (#6) of King of Masked Singer and boy, that was great. It did a great job allowing folks to showcase individual singing talent and I am now a fan of a couple of the contestants. I'll not name who was a total surprise for me (a new fangirl was born!) so as not to spoil it for others, so be sure to check this out for yourselves. It is subtitled so you understand the lyrics and the panel's commentary, but really, just listening to the variety of voices and the passion behind the singing is enough of a draw.

Check.it.out. :)

Hmm, for as many k-variety shows that I watch, I hand't bothered to check out King of Masked Singer probably because I hadn't heard anything about it. I'm going to check it out, thanks Waiting. So many shows aren't subbed, and I see this one is. (Btw, is there a meaning behind your name?)

Hi Owl,

I watched eps 5 & 6 but will go back to watch the others.

The name "Waiting" started with my impatience at having to wait for things to be or if they would be subbed back when I first started to watch, K-J-T dramas. One hooked, I could not get enough and marathoned many and that made watching a currently airing drama torture to have to wait week to week. LOL I've since become much more patient and watch things raw when the moments of impatience strike now and then.

Tell me what you think of the show when you have a chance to watch an episode. I would recommend watching 5 then 6 so you get a chance to appreciate how different a contestant's voice and approach is from song to song.

Maybe other beanies who are watching will add their thoughts to the thread. :)

Happy weekend to you!!

It was fun seeing a couple of members of idol group go it solo on the show and non in t ak-pop way. Luna was amazing, but you know, so was Sungjae from BtoB. Who is Lark?

I have been watching Immortal Songs 2 for a year now, and it just blows me away. I love that I get an education on the history of Korean music, and they have singers, past and present, so the spectrum of talent and the way the show bridges it all is entertaining and very professional. Although, I have to say, the Michael Bolton special a while back was so huh? what?out of place but yet amazing. It left me spinning in orbit, not knowing where in the world I was. heh. Have you seen Immortal Songs 2? And, on the talent wagon, have you watched Mnet's Dancing 9 (there have been 3 seasons, now). It's a dancing competition on the same wave as these high quality singing competitions.

Oh, btw, now that I've seen Mask Singer, I think Infinity Challenge Music Festival 2015 took the idea for thier guests' reveal. It was fabulous, and even if you don't watch Infinity Challenge usually. the couple of months leading up to the Music Festival is all about the practice of the members and guests (it is a tremendous guest line up) and the final performance. Amazing, just amazing.

Hi Owl,

I don't know who Lark is yet as I have still only seen eps 5 & 6. *** SPOILER! *** Sungjae has such a gorgeous voice and the kid is only 20! Imagine how much more he can do over time. I don't follow korean music very much so was unfamiliar with his boy band and other songs, but of those that I listened to, none could compare to his last performance on KOMS. Knowing the lyrics really was irrelevant; the song melody, his voice and delivery were what was important. At least, to me. So many were so good! Luna as well. She is another gifted with a gorgeous voice.

I'll have to check out your other suggestions

Luna (Gold Laquer Used Two Buckets) is a member of f(x) kpop group

-Waiting-

I watched King Of Masked Singer for the first time today and I was freaking blown away!

I went back to see it from the beginning and I'm so glad they changed the format from when it was "Hidden Singer".

I'm not watching any more of the previous shows but I will definitely watch the new eps as they come out.

King of Masked Singer is awesome, isn't it?! ..... I just jumped into it a couple of weeks ago, so it had already started. But that's ok.

If I may ask you though, where are you watching it subtitled? ..... I watch it on regular, broadcast tv (over-the-air), and even though it's a couple of weeks behind the Korea broadcast, it isn't subtitled. Nevertheless, I still enjoy it!

Hi Korfan,

I am hooked and now I have to check out Owl's suggestions above as well.

I noticed it subbed one day on drama cool. Viki has it as well, but I don't see it as subbed. Looks like 6 of 17 episodes are subbed, and although it is interesting to read the subbed comments from the hosts and panel, it most definitely can be enjoyed raw unsubbed. I'll be doing that in the airport for my upcoming trip. Can't think of a better way to pass the time. :)

Have a great weekend!

This is my first time posting on Open Thread! Dramas lately haven't been the best which makes me sad.

High Society: Horrible! I gave up watching around ep 12 but tooned in for the finale to see how the writer would wrap this mess up. I hated everyone except for Ji Yi and Ye-won and I find UEE and Sung Joon to be very bland actors.

Mask: This drama started of great but after the midway point it went down. Seok hoon didn't seem so bad anymore and I couldn't understand Mi yeon. Also, I didn't like the main couple. I think I am the only one who thought they didn't have all that chemistry. They're scenes weren't very cute and I don't know why they kept speaking formally to each other.

I Remember You: Perfect! Love the acting and the amazing writing. I love all the characters from Team Leader to Lee hyun! They just blow me away. A minor complaint that really isn't a complaint is that I want more romance!! The main leads are so cute together I want more! At first I didn't see any chemistry but now they are so cute!

Oh My Ghostess: Perfect! I'm kinda scared because it's too perfect.

Ah, see, and I want less. I'd love for the female lead to accept Hyeon's clear signal that he's interested in friendship but not romance, and the show to end with them just being BFFs.

I feel like he is giving her signals though. I totally understood why she kissed him and why she thought he liked her. Hyeon is always the one to touch her and get really close to her body. Even in the scene where she kisses him he kept stepping closer and closer to her and leaning down. I totally thought he was going to kiss her.

See, I interpreted that as his longing for family, not romantic interest (combined w/the fact that he froze & didn't respond at all to the kiss - that was a clear 'Oh, dear, not interested' signal.) Plus, a lot of his touch is patting her head like she's a kid (or his kid sister).

Maybe it's a cultural thing, though - folks in the US - especially young adults - are very touchy-feely with friends. My best friend in college was a guy, and he & I draped arms over each other, and leaned against each other, and held hands, etc, but we weren't romantically interested in one another at all.

Orange Marmalade I dropped it at Episode 5 and now again resume it. I'm still fascinated by YJG brilliant acting. He is one of those guys that are not only good looking but an awesome actor. it doesn't happen often . Enjoying it a lot and thinking about what to start next.

Despite all the irrational complaints on OM from the audiences who are familiar with the original, I did enjoy the drama. YIG's acting is facsinated indeed. Even the idols did a far better job than lots of so-called actors. I liked the sageuk part and the supernatural elements. Glad I found someone else who watched OM and doesn't have any complaint at all ;-)

Hi Everyone,

Participating during the weekend OT...it's been a while now since I've really been able to fully do so. Reading all the posts & commenting - I sure do miss it! I look forward to having the time to do so again.

The cusp of a new decade awaits me next week. This is my last week as a "plus-niner." Even as the years pass by, I never stop feeling or thinking of myself as young at heart.

Currently Watching:
I Remember You/Hello Monster: Enjoying Seo In-Guk, Jang Na-Ra, Lee Chun-Hee , & Park Bo-Gum)
Scholar Who Walks the Night: Hanging on for Lee Jun-Ki & Lee Soo-Hyuk.
My Beautiful Bride: Love Kim Moo Yul as Kim Do Hyung. Awesome music OSTs, action scenes (for example on a bicycle, in the stairwell, etc.), cinematography, & directing. Glad to see Lee Si-Young in another drama.
Bluebird's House/House of Bluebird: I like Han Eun-Soo & Jang Hyun-Do together as a couple.
Oh My Ghostess: People love and praise it here. But I've yet to really connect with it, experience the lure of it, and feel like each episode is a must see.
Missing Noir M: Finished episode 8.

Recently Finished Dramas
My Love Eun-Dong & Mask: Enjoyed watching both shows.

Upcoming Dramas of Interest:
Young-Pal & Mrs. Cop

Have a Great Weekend!

Someone Like You.-TWdrama. Has anyone seen this?? ..because I have just about had it with this one..I like it but then I hate it. This is my second TWdrama In Time With You was my first..(The Time We Were Not In Love sent me there because I wanted to know how it ended..aha. and then I found out this version actually makes sense and I really liked it..sooo..yeah.) Anyway Someone Like You was super promising but its 20 ep and i really feel like they should have ended at 12.. also because I am new to TWdramas I am not sure this is unique to this particular drama but it feels like a kdrama on steroids.. you know like all the tropes..but here they like to do replays about 3x and they make me want to pull my hair out because I really want to swoon but then they hit me with it 3x..why must you do that?! Also In Time With You had some great steamy scenes...why don't they have them in this one?? is ep 13 still too early?? did i stumble upon a conservative one?? I just hope I can deal with it a little more because I want a kiss between the leads! I mean come on!!... but the truck of doom was hilarious..they even did slow mo and now I am seriously paranoid whenever someone isnt looking straight ahead while driving..also did I mention there are 4 women who like the same guy..whyyyyyyyy..and one is his step-sister..another a company rival..then the woman who has his fiance's transplanted heart..and the woman who looks exactly like his dead fiance..yup. I can do it! even when it makes me want to chuck my laptop.. See this is what happens when you start watching a drama without reading anything about it first..lesson learned!..maybe.

Hi all!

I know you guys are very much talking about the currently airing dramas and the only two i managed to catch was that god awful High Society and surprisingly good I remember you. What happen to the amazing teaser?! Geez. Weird how things turn out don't you guys think, I Remember You description was so vague that i nearly skip it out and i have a bad feeling that i need to skip this one out because the female lead description screams no! to me. Turns out she's like the best badass female lead in quite a while.

TTWNIL - OMG What happen?! I was not expecting this especially from the queen Ha Ji Won. This is such a mess that i didn't bother to continue on. Please do, enlighten me if the drama gets better than only i will spare some time to once again to join the bandwagon. I still think the reason they are not together is such a silly and dumb thing.

So instead of dramas, i'm going to dedicate my comment here to the coincidentally 3 female leads that i just finished watching their dramas on who also become my girl crushes haha. Next one i'm hoping to write one on guys, but well the girls deserve some loving too. PS: My current crush, Jo In Sung... new drama please! Rising to the list is new comer SIG and PBG. Woo

Ha Ji Won - Kill me for saying this, but i never got the hype around her in particular. In every single drama that i have watched, she's so... how to say similar in each drama that i don't get what so awesome about her acting skills? Well it seriously changed after the messy Empress Ki. Man, she was the only reason i'm sticking for in that messy show. I'm going to finish it, just for her acting skills tribute. She blew me away.. and now i get the hype around her LOL. I think i blame Secret Garden for the bad impression haha.

Park Shin Hye - You still kiss like you're dying. (But dear Jong Suk thank you for making the girl feel alive for once in Pinnochio) -END OF STORY-

Jang Nara - I Remember You/ Fated to Love You. This girl i have so much to write home about really. The pre-chinese market, and the after chinese market Jang Nara is like two totally different actress in her own league. I can't even watch Jang Nara properly back in the days and then she like 'poof' gone. And boy she came back good. I mean she has improved for me and by leaps and bounds that is. There's something about her acting in each of her character that make her seem likable. I think it's the sincerity in it? I don't know but Fated to me was golden and i stop Mr Back just because it's such a silly show. At first i was sort of luke warm on her role in I Remember You. It really wasnt growing on me until later part and now i absolutely love CJA. The thing about JNR i think is her ability to disappear into the role. I notice that eventhough how memorable her role in previous dramas i never seemed to recall it back in the next one. The way she plays her character is REALLY different and thank god because she's doing back to back...

Hello Folks...

For major part, been a silent reader.

And you folks save my boring days with your suggestions and banter here.

So, at present..watching Ghostess only. It is so cute.
PBY as SA is nailing it :) ...

Few Queries, masters of the K universe:

1. So, is the evil ghost SJ's older brother?
2. Evil ghost was always there in SJ? ( clearly him getting hit is before he became polic office and hence before he was being nice to 'living' SA)
3. SJ is able to piece it together...that BS is behaving a lot like SA (again meaning SJ was always evil ghost even when SA was alive and interacting with SJ)
4. Who is BS's ghost advicer granny? :)
5. Why is our hero the epicenter or magnet for all ghosts in the world :) ( including stray ghosts in his kitchen that SA was trying to get rid of in earlier episode..or the one that crept up BS while washing utensils)

I remember you-
Is it more of mystery (genuine..where you dont figure it out) or romcom? i see everyone is going ga ga over it

"I remember you-

It's a crime-cum-mystery show with the main character's arc underpinned by an examination of whether criminals are made or born. It's great that we get some reveals along the way and are not left in the dark, great that we can get to guess along and be likely right and that we get to hear the rationale and modus operandi of serial killers because our 'resident' psychopaths are able to figure these out and elucidate. It's not like the Agatha Christie kind of mystery where all is revealed only at the end, however some things are still kept a mystery to tantalize the viewer, which is great too!

1. Hey, I think the evil spirit is another person who connected with the brother in law cause they "match". Similar to SA and BS. The match being because the brother in law tried to kill his sibling (his first act of evil).
2. Unclear as of yet if the evil spirit took over brother in laws body or is just attached similar to SA (this may explain why his bad ki was large compared to a normal person)
3. Yes that is a possibility. Also note that there's a scene where the evil spirit was looking at BS/SA from within brother in law's body? Not quite sure on that point
4. We have no idea yet.
5. BS's body attracts ghosts cause she's related to her grandma

All in all I think the writers did poor planning for ep 9 + 10 :(. It was mainly SA developing feelings...first it was SW's old love interest mess and now SA's becoming a tad bit annoying? BS's hasn't updated her blog in awhile....and BS's granny would be worried with no contact for that long? Felt that there should be both SA and BS being able to both see all the events (instead of taking turns). But oh we'll.

one more query :

How is it in K land-

Doing dramas/movies is at same level is it?
Like in most other places big actors don't do tv serials because it is sort of beneath them... (yes now the trend has started...but still rare)..however in kland it seems..even the big/famous guys do dramas without second thought..it doesn't seem to hamper with any set image of the actor...is that so?

No, there's plenty of actors who only do one or the other, only some do both. There's more prestige and more money in films (well, at least for the top actors), as well as somewhat better working conditions. And some of the more mediocre actors that constantly get leads in dramas wouldn't survive in films, which aren't quite so forgiving (generally, there are exceptions of course).

That said, I don't think it hampers the image of an actor to do a drama on occasion. But, those that manage to make it in film seem to all prefer to stay there – e.g. took some 10 years for Gianna Jun to do a drama again (and I would not expect her to to another one for another 10 years despite the fact that My Love from Another Star was hugely successful), Kang Dong-won doesn't intend to do dramas ever again etc etc.

Hi everyone!

Well, July 31st came and went, and I am another year older. lol I feel old.. wait.. I am old. lol

Mask = This is the first time I have ever watched a makjang drama. Now I see why they get high ratings. The craziness can be so addicting. When you start mentally screaming at your monitor because of disbelief, then you're hooked. lol

Oh My Ghostess = This drama is probably Jo Jung Suk's most challenging acting job. I don't know how he can keep a straight face whenever Park Bo Young throws aegyo his way.

I Remember You = Top notch acting by everyone. Really appreciating Jang Na Ra and her character. Ji An is no Candy.

Scholar Who Walks the Night = Yang Sun's dad is a moron. That's all I can say for now. lol

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone, ....You know something.... I've suddenly realised that we've not seen Fanderay lately. Her last post and Review was on May 17th for Warm and Cozy.

I miss her lovely slice of show artwork (that makes a statement in itself) and her review.

Dear Fanderay, if you're reading this, I hope you're fine. I also hope that you're managing to watch the latest shows. If you're watching I Remember You and Oh My Ghostess, I'd love to see what scene(s) you'll pick out to draw.

As for me, I'd choose the brother's reunion scene in I Remember You for the raw emotions on their faces. From Oh My Ghostess, I'd choose the moment just after the kiss in Episode 9 with dawning realisation/shock on the faces of Soon Ae, Bong Sun and hopeful watchfulness in Sun Woo's. Turning point moments in the dynamics of these fantastic characters.

Thanks so much @Saya! I've posted in Fanderay's page and am hoping she'll check her email and maybe just leave a note to say she's fine.

It's great to know that you're up and about reading comments not just in your own recap thread but elsewhere.

I find OT great for just discussing the shows that are not recapped here. I don't have the time or inclination to go to other sites that may be recapping or reviewing those shows, or really, it's just that I like DB so much, I don't really want to go elsewhere! LOL!

Wow! so each of you who does a recap, gets to receive all those many emails. Do you, as LollyPip does, read every email or do you just go on the thread to read?

I'm not surprised that you'll have to save your time for the recap. I imagine it takes several viewings with much pausing to think and write and edit each show. Then if you're also the one slicing the show for stills and reviewing them to find the ones most appropriate for the recap, you'd have spent many, many hours on this 'job'. That's why I am very appreciative of the all re-cappers. Many thanks to you and all the re-cappers./reviewers who voluntarily commit your time and effort and skill and talent in giving us so much joy in reading and watching with you, and helping us to think through what we are watching and appreciate it (or not) better! :)

I love the great actors in Oh My Ghostess as they make a huge difference in the drama. Nothing irks me more than bad acting. Fangirling over Delicious Chef. Starting to get a littleeee annoyed at the energizer bunny of aegyo but love that the leads are giving me butterflies. Romance is dead in my life so this comes as a sweet treat. Starting to feel bad for Soon Ae AND Bong Sun. Love everything BUT...I have this FEAR that Oh My Ghostess will go somewhere horrifying or ridiculous. Please don't. Please don't! Pretty please! Two shows that are definitely worth the time this season: I Remember You and Oh My Ghostess. It can't be said too often.

Slowly watching The Time I've Loved You but still updated each week. I did not expect it to be waaaay better than the original, but it's definitely going into a direction that's getting me frustrated.

Just starting Midnight Diner. Definitely has that magic pull when you watch it in midnight. On the 5th episode of Mask, plans to finish it August-Sept.

That is all. Might catch Yong-pal, but really, I can't rest easy until the new episode of I Remember You comes out. Such pain :(

Oh My Ghostess

It's great and all but I really wish that someone would tell Soon Ae how unfair she's being to Bong Sun.

Sure, she's experiencing things that she has never experienced before and I'm happy for her. But because of that, shouldn't she be the best person that would know what it feels like not to experience those things, and yet she's doing it to Bong Sun, depriving Bong Sun of the experiences that she should have experienced with Chef.

I'm saying "depriving" because we see her wavering about resolving her virginity grudge and yet she still continues possessing Bong Sun, and it's really unfair for Bong Sun. Because if Soon Ae does not plan on resolving her grudge with Chef, why would she continue possessing Bong Sun? The answer brings us back to "because she wants to experience things she hasn't experience before". And that's what really makes me upset because I think she's really being unfair, I can even say selfish, because by experiencing it herself, she's depriving Bong Sun of the same things.

Again, Soon Ae knows what it feels like not to experience those things and if she treats Bong Sun as a friend, she really should not let Bong Sun undergo the same thing (which is being unable to experience things that she should have).

Ugh, I don't know if I'm making sense, but I really just want to let go of my frustrations with this show. I really like it and I sympathize with Soon Ae and I feel sad that she died too young, but what about Bong Sun? :( She doesn't even know that Soon Ae already likes Chef. If Soon Ae is her friend, Soon Ae should tell her about it, or even just about the whole "wavering about resolving her grudge" thing. Bong Sun should know.

I'm just really upset with how the whole show is going. I still like it though. /sigh

I've said it before... at this stage in the 'game', there needs to be another way out for Soon Ae instead of possession, which no matter how consensual, is still not right.

I'm guessing that maybe the grudge will not get resolved in the next episode even... something will happen to interrupt them. The evil spirit in Sung Jae seems to want no loose ends,... so although Soon Ae does not remember him as her killer, he will still aim to kill Bong Sun. In the process of saving Bong Sun, Soon Ae will find that she does resolve her grudge. I hope she gets to do lots of good before she leaves and that she finds peace. :)

I find it unfair too for Bong Sun... And for Chef! Because of the possession, I'm afraid Chef falls for Soon Ae's personnality rather than Bong Sun's. What's going to happen to their love story after Soon Ae is gone for good ?
Having to wait a week to see the next episode is killing me!

What drama(s) should I watch next?

New to kdramas, watched and loved over the past four months:
My Name Is Kim Sam-Soon (second time, actually)
Secret Garden
My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho

I'll be done with Lie to Me soon -- didn't love it, but did love the principal couple.

Rom-coms are obviously great, but I'm also willing to try new genres. I like US police procedurals as long as the crime isn't too gross/serious.

Suggestions?

These are my favorites:

"Two Weeks" - Thriller w/fantastic acting, a tight plot, and edge-of-your-seat action.

"Marriage, not Dating" - Hilarious rom-com.

"Misaeng" - Office drama about a kid in his first corporate job. Absolutely AMAZING.

"SungKyunKwan Scandal" - Historical; about university students in the 1700s. Cross-dressing, masked-fighters-for-justice, royal scandals, intrigue, love notes passed in library books, exam pressures, etc.

"Ten/Ten 2" - Super-violent cop drama about chasing terrifying serial killers. Stylish & nice acting.

"Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong" - Title says it all. Attractive detective who can see ghosts + ghost of murdered high schooler. Together, they fight crime!

"Vampire Prosecutor 2" - Again, self-explanatory title. I like the second season better. Cop show w/larger arc that involves one of the scariest-yet-disturbingly-sympathetic villains, ever.

"Shut Up! Flower Boy Band" - Teen drama about high school kids who start a band & discover that corporate rock sucks. Nice soundtrack, & stars Jo Bo-Ah, Sung Joon, and Lee Min Ki. (My teenage son & his friends adored this.)

Others that I loved:

Coffee Prince (rom-com)
Bad Guys (gritty cop show)
Missing Noir M (gritty cop show)
Surplus Princess (comedy)
Hon/Soul/Possessed (horror)
Master's Sun (horror/rom/comedy)
Detectives in Trouble/Crime Squad (cop show)

kia ora Cate,
As you obviously liked Kim Sam Soon, I'd flip to City Hall next (Kim Sun Ah), and then, because you'll fall in love with Cha Seung Won its off to Greatest Love (also called Best Love). That will make you a Gong Hyo Jin fan and there's lots of awesome with her in it (Master's Sun is quirky good -slightly scary, but only slightly- fun). Happy watching.

@harmonyfb gave some awesome suggestions (especially loved Master's Sun, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and Coffee Prince) but I'll add my two cents in as well :) Some of my favorites (which I cannot recommend enough)

"I Hear Your Voice"
(romance/thriller/supernatural/law/comedy)
I can't recommend this one enough; honestly don't know how to describe the premise but I promise it's great

"Pinocchio"
(rom-com/drama)
same writer as IHYV so if you watched that and liked it, you'll like this (and vice-versa)

"Healer"
(action/rom-com/drama)
amazing; watch a few episodes and you'll be hooked--characters and story are wonderful

"City Hunter"
(action/romance)
seriously good and seriously addicting; also, Lee Min-ho at his best

"You Who Came from the Stars"
(sci-fi rom-com)
basically everyone was obsessed with this when it was airing, and for good reason

"Master's Sun"
(rom-com/horror)
I personally really love this one; it's by the Hong Sisters who also wrote My GF is a Gumiho, so you'll probably like it as well

Sorry I didn't really provide overviews of plots--I tried but backspaced upon realizing how terrible I am at descriptions haha--but most of the above have good doses of romance and seriously well crafted stories; if you like police procedurals, you might also want to check out You're All Surrounded and I Remember You (this one's still airing, but almost at the end of its run I believe).
