Happy Friday Beanies! This summer is passing by so quickly. I have a few visitors coming next month too so I’m really excited. I also got a lovely goodie box from Korea sent to me that mostly contained beauty products, and it all looks amazing (but I also can’t read any of the instructions!). But on to the reviews:

Hwajung Well, uh, things are not happening at the speed I thought it would but I guess it makes sense to have these new characters as we’re nearing the halfway mark. Obviously I know Injo had to show up but I was just as surprised as the king when he showed up with no warning. I'm just impressed with myself for keeping up to date on this show. I’m also really happy that our mystery third ‘flower boy’ was who everyone thought it would be. Not that our princess needs anymore guys, but he actually seemed like the most admirable and fleshed out of the options.

Hidden Identity Hmm. I really liked the first two episodes but episode three felt like a mess to me - there were a lot of holes in the story. Episode four seems relatively back on track though so we’ll see how this goes. I liked how Missing Noir M dealt with issues more than this show.

I Remember You I really enjoyed these two episodes actually! I have a lot of fun theories running around in my brain but I’m happy to sit back and just let it all unwind. I like the premise of playing with the idea of people becoming what others treat them as. I think this is definitely true to an extent in our lives. I have seen people be told that they were stupid when they clearly weren’t but it overtook them and so they started basically giving up in school because they were too dumb. I have seen people be told they were pretty to the point that it ended up completely defining them, etc. I still think there is choice (and I think this show is going to go that direction as well) but there’s also no doubt in my mind that the way a person is treated can definitely effect how they act or who they become. I also am enjoying the actors. I love our two leads anyway, and right now they’re pretty fun. I don’t necessarily see them as romantic (it’s early days) but there’s a lot of great energy between them and as individual characters.

Orange Marmalade And once again the pacing is so random!! This show always gets stuck with too much ground to cover in not enough episodes. I’m actually sort of dreading this episode 8 wrap up. I’m watching because there are things I enjoy but the pacing really kills any sort of emotional investment I have. I know a lot of people have issues with Jae-min, but I’m actually fine with him. I think he’s very realistically flawed and I don’t need perfect leads. However, again because of pacing, I think the show fails to make you invested in him because it doesn’t explore his emotional/moral arc in a convincing manor. Also our villainous teen girl is basically a cardboard plot device. Yawn. (And I know I sound like a broken record but just once would it have killed them to allow our lead heroine to have a friend? At least in one of the eras? Teenage girls need more than just love interests!)

The Lover Show complete! (Spoilers ahead) I admit that the subs weren’t completely when I watched the last episode so I’ll most likely re-watch it but I understand the gist of everything. Not really many surprises but I am super happy that they weren’t completely trolling the fangirls. Overall this show had a lot of potential but in the end it just felt like it didn’t know what to do with itself. I’ve started to like some new actors though so that’s a nice plus.

I haven’t watched this week’s Producer or Warm & Cozy. I also only have the final episode left in Arang & the Magistrate.

And on a random note, does anyone have any suggestions for some good nail art site? I've never gotten any but I feel like treating myself since I've been working a lot of overtime. I want it on my own nails (they're fairly long right now) and with no jewels or whatnot - just some fun/interesting design.

I'm really enjoying Arang so it won't take much for me to finish. It's more that every time I go to watch it I feel a bit guilty that I'm not catching up on one of the currently airing shows....but I find Arang more interesting than most!

And thank you for the Instagram rec! There's some really great stuff on there.

I loved Arang when I started watching it a year ago, but accidentally got spolied on the ending in a forum for another show a few eps in. It's been hard to finish it. I'll probably need to rewatch in a marathon once I've seen the ending the first time. Facing the same issue with Gu Family Book, although I haven't seen spoilers. Stuck in episode 20, not compelled to go back to it.

0

and I was just gonna say that no matter what, don´t try the nail art you see on the internet. Reality vs Ideal is like trying to get to Han river through a line of white trucks of doom

0

Well I don't intend to do the nail art myself! I have a friend who makes her living this way, but I've never gotten it done myself. The photos would be more a sort of reference point.

0

With you on The Lover. I usually just fast forward to find the 2 guys' weekly <5 minutes. I will have to rewatch the whole episode when it's actually 100% and find out the nuances. Very disappointed but not at all surprised that after the first 3-4 episodes the Dangerous Bromance went into a holding pattern for the entire series. Still... that's probably a huge stride for Korea, right?

That's mostly how I watched "The Lover", too. ::laugh:: I was a little disappointed in their ending, but I guess Korean television isn't quite ready for the cozy domestic ending that we should have gotten.

Required fields are marked *

I watched it all but I was certainly partial to our 'bromance'. However that holding pattern you mentioned got really annoying. Still props to them not having another 'fake gay' moment. I knew just based on the show overall that they wouldn't go far with it, so I'm just happy that they went with it. While they liked to push sex jokes and whatnot, it wasn't really a show that was pushing boundaries on anything. Besides considering the backlash Seonam Detectives got for actually having a kiss scene, I think it will sadly be a while before anything is really going to go beyond this level.

I also am really enjoying I Remember You. "I like the premise of playing with the idea of people becoming what others treat them as." - Me too. I don't remember seeing a drama that explored this theory; so this is gonna be something different and new. Excited! Also love the leads.

I LOVE Arang and the Magistrate so much!!!! I still go back and re-watch sometimes. It doesn't have any plot holes, which impressed me. Great writing, acting, bgm, and action :) Lee Jun Ki, Shin Min Ah, and Hwang Bo Ra are great too!

Happy Friday, beanies.

I liked Kang So-ra so much in Warm and Cozy that i finally decided to watch Misaeng. I know, I know! What took me so long?! I'm really enjoying it.

Since Warm and Cozy is definitely not one of the Hoang sisters best drama, can you beanies suggest some of their best work for me to watch?

Personally, My Girlfriend is a gumiho is my favorite piece. Shin Mina and Seunggi is so cute and heartwarming together. Or you can try Best Love to watch Cha Seungwoon being a jerk as a first rate actor. It's also good but sometimes a little over-the-top.

Try Best Love (also known as The Greatest Love). It's fantastic. It also has one of the best 2nd male leads to appear in a drama.

Check it out and see what you think!

I really need to watch Misaeng as well. So many good reviews and it's bound to be better than most things I'm currently trying.

I know it gets mixed reviews but I really loved Master's Sun. It was one if the first kdramas I saw but it really stuck with me. At first I was non-plussed by the Candy heroine but then I realized how much they were playing with that trope. I dunno - I found it fun and like the actors.

Give Misaeng a try, especially if the dramas you are currently watching are below average. I started watching it last Friday and I got hooked with the 1st episode. You can’t help but care for the main character. I’m not too far along, barely in episode 6.

The Hong sisters' dramas are very flawed, but the area where they really excel is in choosing their leads and showing off their chemistry (they got the first part right in W&C, sadly they are playing push-and-pull with the second!)

So for Hong sisters recs considering those two factors, the best is Master's Sun (So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin had fabulous and sexy chemistry, even if the skinship was chaste the innuendo and their gazes were so not chaste lol).

Also My Girl, if you don't mind the dated look of the clothes and hairstyles.

SJS was not an actor I ever pictured in a comedy, but he did a champion job of using his finely-honed melo leading-man skills to show a new side of himself in MS.

Any actor of his stature who allows the drama to make a visual joke of him the way Master's Sun did with his fussy pastel suits and equally fussy hair, is worth watching - I'm always a sucker for when actors chuck their image aside and go for it, and he really did. (same goes for Cha Seung-won as Dokko Jin).

I used to wish Lee Jun-ki would do a romcom with the Hong sisters again, but I cannot risk oppa getting saddled with another Warm & Cozy. Or even worse, Big!

yeah wel SJS was good in acting but he just left me cold, in general.

I also want to see Lee Jun Ki in a romcom. He said in an interview that he chooses projects where he can show his acting skills. Maybe he considers romcoms to be easy; that's why he is not doing one?

0

+1, @redfox!
I do like SJS in almost anything but my very first love -plus unforgettable, korean style lol- will always be my Dokko Jin! My very first kdrama...my chair was on fire, too. Hottie+endless laughing---> LOVE4EVER ;-)

For me, the best Hong sisters' drama is Best Love. It was hilarious, and I loved the leads together. I really liked My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Master's Sun as well. In MS though, I was invested more in Kang Candy and Little Sun than the main couple.

I don't want to watch My Girl coz Lee Jun Ki is the second lead in it. It will be too much to see him crying for a girl. Lol.

My favorite of the Hong Sisters dramas is You're Beautiful, followed by My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (although I thought this drama started off slow but got much better as it went along), then Best Love/Greatest Love and Master's Sun (but this one more for the leads chemistry than the plot, but this does have the best second female lead of any Hong Sisters drama).

But whatever you do avoid Big - truly a disaster. I also didn't like Delightful Girl Choon Hyang (mostly because it featured "the H in love with OW" trope which is one of my least favorite tropes).

Orange Marmalade (Argghh, the pain of waiting for 1 episode per week!)

I Remember You
I like Jang Na Ra but not as keen on Seo In Gook.
SIG's character seems too Sherlock-esque
I am absolutely gobsmacked by D.O.'s acting so far.
Dude is creeeeeepy!

High Society
I'm only watching it for Park Hung Sik's hair.

Hidden Identity sucked me in even though I am not a fan of this genre normally.

Not watching Warm & Cozy. Blegh

Totally watching The Lover -OMFG That show is so funny I actually go back and watch it again to see the reaction comments. so. much. fun!

Also watching Hwang Jin Yi- not sure why I didn't watch it the first time around. Love Ha Ji Won...I am now at the end of Jang Keun Suk's role. I've already used quite a few tissues...should I buy more?

Happy OT beanies.. ;-)

-CRIME SCENE S2: Bravo, show. I was expecting some twist for the last eps, but that thing you pull at the last minute is simply brilliant. So the casts found the victim slumped over his desk on his own pool of blood with stabbing wound on his neck, then they found out that the weapon is this giant clock's hand, and they succesfully arrested the criminal... Only to find out that the victim's cause of death is not excessive blood loss, but asphixia. Haha, that's one way to make your casts went riot when you insisted that the case ain't over and they got extra 1 hour to arrested the right criminal when it's freaking 5 a.m. And you even going as far as providing new site to investigate through. Thumbs up. Can't wait how they will played this out next week.

-PUNCH: Finishing this and it's really amazing, I can't praise it high enough. It's definitely one of the best drama I've ever watched. I love how everyone painted in a different shades of grey, how every situation can be peeled like onion and there is always something more behind all those layers, that there are always power shifts, that there is nothing certain about who will win this ultimate battle, and how every woman in this drama is actually a living character that can think and act, not just some unnecessary accessory. And the ending is surely brilliant and satisfying. Bravo, Punch. You are such a rarity.

-MASK: I was really frustrated with Jisook being meek and weak in front of everyone. She should just come clean with Minwoo about her identity when he already told her about his biggest secret so they can defeat Seokhoon together. Especially now that the crazy machinations is back in full swing. Please writer-nim, don't drag the misunderstanding unnecessarily. And please, let Jisook being a smart and resourceful woman we know in the earlier eps again.

-HIDDEN IDENTITY: Oooh, this show makes me giddy. It's slick and cool. Glad that all the police seems capable so far. I'm really invested on Geonwoo and Taein's relationship since they seem still have so many brotherly love left after whatever terrible things that happen back then.

Mask

Yes, it's kind of strange how Ji-sook went in an instant from a rather interesting character in the pilot episodes to a apathetic bystander for almost a month now.

It seems, however, that the show is going to start its plot any minute now. I mean, it's only episode 10.

Punch
I agree that Punch was a very well done show ... for the first half. Sadly, like so many other shows, it had enough plot for about 10 to 12 hours and that got stretched and padded to a 19 episode drama. Midway through, the same plot points got repeated over and over again. For me, it got very boring at that point (and the ending was dull to me, as it was foreshadowed so heavily and so many times before).

However, I agree that it had some potentially very strong characters, some of them female.

You're still watching Mask, Jon?I thought you were so disgusted, you gave up.

It did seem in episode 10 that she was about to get some traction and start setting up her revenge. Perhaps that was her strategy all along. Convince them that I'm weak and then come out like the lioness that I am.

I wasn't disgusted, actually. There wasn't enough of anything to be disgusted. Watching a fly hitting the window glass over and over again can be reassuring, because you know you can do whatever you want and come back anytime, the fly will still be hitting the window.

Glad to be here after missing last week. Experienced a horrible, summertime flu/cold. I felt really sick for a couple of days, but thank goodness I'm feeling a whole lot better! ....... I got behind a little bit on the drama-watching, but I'm catching up!

Watched this week:

Angry Mom - Finally finished this. It was good from beginning to end. Will certainly miss Go Bok-dong.

Hwajeong - Loving Cha Seung-won as the king.

Mask - Just started this and I've watched the first 4 episodes! ....... Oh my goodness, I'm so going to enjoy this one!

Divorce Lawyer In Love - It's cutesy, it's light. Just right for summer watching. ....... That new cheater divorce case with the "Korean Casanova", wow, what a disrespectful jerk!!

Masked Prosecutor - Decided to give it a chance and checked this out. Unfortunately, we didn't click right now, so the viewing lasted no more than 10 minutes. Don't think I'll be watching this at this time.

That's it for now. ....... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

Can you imagine the show if they hadn't switched second male lead at the last minute? It was originally the actor who was the male lead on Surplus Princess (the hapless art student). Instead, we got the evil dude from Ghost. I just cannot imagine him pulling it off. I am now suspicious that the "sudden illness" that made him drop out was an excuse to recast and save face for him. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a cool guy I just doubt he's at the level necessary for such a nuanced part.

0

Dear @Alessar, I think you are a bit confused. The "bad guy" in MP is the second male lead in Scent of A Woman. Many of us here have been waiting his reunion with KSA after that painful drama. Plus his level of acting has nothing to do with OJW's.
Don't get me wrong, I've watched practically every project of his (even a 50-ep. week-end makjang) but fair is fair...UKJ is a far better and versatile actor with theatre experience as well. So I seriously doubt the role went downhill when he was cast. It could very well be the opposite.
Of course, I completely understand anyone's personal taste :-). My life's motto is "de gustibus et coloribus..." for that matter!

Hi all
Hoping everyone is well.
Hard to believe that in two weeks we’ll have been in Albany for a year. Time flies!

Dramas:
High Society: Am hooked on this one. I had assumed this would be all high concept cheesy but the writer is doing a good job so far. The story might get messy at times but the characters are so well-made (all the characters) that right now the story seems to be flowing from character motivations rather than writerly plotting. Love Joon-ki’s mom, the Chairman, and the mistress/concubine especially. They seemed really horrible to begin with but now we see there’s more to them than bad manners and an inability to grieve about a dead chaebol son. And am totally loving that everyone in the drama seems to be “learning” something. Learning how to be unrepressed and violent after being a perfect chaebol wife all these years. Learning how to be “soft” if one is to be kept as a concubine. Love both of the romantic couples.

Mask: Oh my! This drama. Hadn’t realized how much I wanted a makjang! Big Bad Villain is so ruthless. So glad she developed a backbone AT LAST.

House of Bluebird: I had stopped watching this because the villain was so mean-spirited and cruel in such a visceral and sneaky way. I just couldn’t take it. But it kept whispering to me and I couldn’t shake it. So I watched episode 32 and yep I’m pulled in again. This is one villain I want to go down to the pit of hell.

I Remember You: I have a lot of hope for this. I like the way the writer takes us along with the clues. The possible romance doesn’t feel necessary but since it’s gonna exist no matter what, we’ll just have to suck up and accept it. There are some great feels in this drama, espec in the backstory. The darker scenes have more heart than the romance so am hoping for more heart in the present. And loved it when serial killer called up. Wondering if serial killer is working with hero’s “missing” brother. Or if missing brother was adopted by good parents and is now an investigator. Which would be best because if the story is about nature versus nurture and “the critical moment” when nurture affects nature..then we should see that becoming a serial killer isn’t one’s only option if one is a child genius who paints odd paintings.

Hidden Identity: Remembered once again why I dislike action spy/thrillers. I don’t mind unbelievable. I mind unbelievable when the main characters are supposed to be super-great. Events, timing, etc falling into place to help them in EVERY situation is just hard to accept.

Masked Prosecutor: I keep fast-forwarding because I want to see what happens when Prosecutor Kang realizes he has a brother. That is the main reason why I’m watching. Writer should’ve worked more of that into the story.

Producers Loved Cindy and felt sorry for her but wow, has there ever been a more self-involved “lover” in k-drama? I understand that the writer showed her as caring for the little starlets, and that she became famous as a child...

I keep debating whether or not I should try high society. I feel like response is very mixed.

I'm really enjoying I Remember You. It makes me sad that it had like half the viewers as the other shows in that time slot. I suppose the romance is unnecessary but I think it has the potential to be a lot if fun...so long as they keep this a fusion drama and don't ignore the other story elements.

I am watching Hidden Identity, but it is one of my genres. I don't think things are working too perfectly since I don't think one plan has actually gone correctly lol. Bit I also think this show isn't the best example of its genre....the writing is a bit weak.

Give High Society a chance. it's one of the sole primarily love story on right now. We need rom-com sans Eun Dong angst.

still watching Hidden Identity but convenient plotting makes it hard to believe the team is great.

I Remember You invites us to solve the crime along with the heroes. Hidden Identity wants to save credit for itself. So it's hard to follow.

I almost started High Society and then I realized how many shows started this week or in the upcoming week. I think I'll just add it to my watch later list and keep an eye reviews. I do love a good rom-com.

I'm not entirely sure Hidden Identity knows what it's doing to be honest. I mean, I like the way it's show but I've lost some faith in it.

I meant to watch Bluebirds house bc of my deep crush on Lee Joon Hyuk but started watching King of Mask singer instead and even though it has no subs, I am so hooked, I don´t think I´ll be watching much else. yes, all the songs sound the same in Korea, but the voices, the guessing, the fun, it is so great

btw, does anyone know where more than 2 ep are subbed of King Of Masked Singer? It is so confusing to try find my way through youtube clips or the viki ones. and they don´t all have subs. Some have them only in spanish.

I think it is such a great show. in Estonia all singers can do what they want we dont have that kind of industry, but we have a show where 8 singers interpret each others songs every week trying out styles they never tried before and it is pretty challenging. search "Laula mu laulu" if you want to hear some

If you like, perhaps I can take you over to the Grafton Peach Pagoda. It is a beautiful and spiritual place. I think you would like it.

Hope you are well! Best wishes to your family. Gosh, it took me a whole year to make the journey over the mountain to Albany for a visit. How did the Korean cooking turn out? My aunt asked me to make her ramen on my next visit.

Honestly, Cindy in Producer has been raised since early adolescence in a highly dysfunctional hothouse of an environment where on one hand, she came first at all times but the pressures on her were massive and she was treated as a product and an image/star, rather than a person.

Add to that the weight of guilt over her parents' deaths (again, the loss of an influence that could have led to the injection of some normalcy in her life), are we surprised she is self-centred? How could she be otherwise? And she's not without consideration for others, when it counts - she was the one to instantly realise Ye-jin (whom she knew by then was Seung-chan's crush) was being harassed by her fans because of her injury, and SHE took the initiative to take the selca and post it online with a friendly message, to get people to back off Ye-jin.

This kind of reminds me of criticism of the mermaid from Surplus Princess.....another girl who was raised away from human beings or even other people like her, and has no real concept of how normal people behave. Of course they're going to be clueless and a bit selfish, even in love - they simply didn't know any other way.

not really, Carole. You said something to the effect of you understand that she became the way she was as a child star, but I don't think you quite did.

You're expecting her to behave like a normal, somewhat well-adjusted person (worrying about Seung-chan's day etc) when absolutely nothing in her environment post-puberty has ever supported that. She has been the centre of her own world for such a long time, and everyone in her team has supported that view for so long, that caring about others isn't really her priority any more - and that goes for her+Seung-chan too.

Happy Friday~ Jet lag aside, it's a wonder I've managed to start two new shows and a movie since yesterday hehe

Hwajung - I had nothing currently airing after School 2015, Ex-Girlfriends' Club and Producer ended so I went back to my first love: sageuks. Marathon-ed it but frankly, I'm hooked from E01. Naturally rooting for Jeongmyeong and Queen Inmok but Gwanghae makes me so conflicted. He's not straight up good but also not completely incapable of evil. You just see him wanting to be a wise and competent king although it doesn't help his closest people (Lady Kim Gaeshi especially) does all these unspeakable deeds on a regular basis. Hands down to Gaeshi, in any case, she's awe-inspiring for wielding that amount of power. Injo though, is already hateful from the get go. He crossed the line when he inconsiderately brought up Yeongchang's death in front of the still grieving dowager queen. Wow, just no. He can chop off his head next week, for all I care, and save us from all the damage history tells us he'll do when he gets the throne.

Reset - Maybe it's the withdrawal from Kim Sohyun but 10 episodes of messed up murders and hypnosis shenanigans was not that bad. Especially when her character, coincidentally another Eunbi, a redhaired teenage delinquent ends up with a precious found family after the male protagonist, played by Chun Jung Myung, left her in the care of his co-workers from the prosecutor's office because she looks exactly like his first love who died 15 years ago. I'm pretty sure there were vague one-sided (?) lovelines (Chief Han with Cha Woojin, Inspector Go with Chief Han) but aside from the intense mystery, the three being co-guardians over Eunbi was what kept me tuning in for the next episode.

Mask - I've heard everyone raving about it (and I've read the first db recap on it) so I told myself it wouldn't hurt to try. And boy, it didn't. Sure, all the makjang tropes you could think of are employed and yet, they play it so straight that the crazy's refreshing (yes, over the top, theatrical Evil Ahjussi, I'm looking mostly at you). Oh, let's not forget how awesome it gets when Jisook and Minwoo are acting all dorky and adorably cute. Since Eunha's dead dead, we might as well get Jisook finally taking charge of her own life decisions (and maybe helping her husband not have induced insanity) and I'm so okay with the developments.

Warm and Cozy - I'm currently on E04 but I can see why it's irritating to watch. The male lead's stupidly dense and hugely self-centered (except for fleeting moments of barely okay concern for Jungjoo); the lady he pines on is just, if not more conceited than he is. A little too bland but right now, I'm going to continue because ~Kang Sora~.

Also, revisited an old kdrama I first saw when I was still in elementary: The Legend (2007). I could only vaguely remember the animal guardian spirits magically looming over but what made me go...

... again through the entirety of it was seeing how Kiha would turn out since she's kind by nature but unwillingly controlled because she's the Phoenix guardian. The side romance of shy but discreetly skilled Dalbi and fierce warrior softie Jumuchi is undeniably the cutest, even the main character played by Bae Yong Joon kept on pushing for them to be together. No wonder they ended up together in real life (I've seen an interview where Shin Eunjung says her husband Park Sung Woong, though known for playing villains, would say "옴마 사랑해" the aegyo way all the time).

And the movie I watched was The Spy: Undercover Operation (2013). I went in without expectations but I left amazed by Moon Sori's comedic timing.

Whoa, you marathoned all of Hwajung?! Very impressive. I love Gwanghae. He's very layered and I think he's a good king (which doesn't always equate to a "good" man). As much as this show apparently advertised that he would be an evil character...he's definitely not. I also am liking how they're handling the politics. I'm not experienced with many sageuks but it's easy for me to get lost or overwhelmed with the political intrigue but in this one I feel pretty confident that I understand everything.

I'm on episide 12 of W&C and I'm still getting too irritated by things. I dint even know why I chose to stick with this one. It's certainly not the worst drama but beyond lady diver, I'm not really invested in anyone.

Maybe being into sageuks really helped. That and I got spoiled that the little prince dies so I just had to go on and watch the next episode to see what's so splendid about that morbid decision. Aghast but yeah, sitting or even the notion or wanting to sit on the throne does things to a person. I hope Cha Seungwon stays until the 30th episode, at least, he's so good in his role. I've done some readings and with the introduction of Neungnyang/Injo, it's sad the coup that will depose Gwanghae is not that far.

OK, what I've been watching....

I Remember You/Hello Monster - An intriguing show, well worth the watch. We are getting a good childhood backstory... a little dark because it starts our thinking about whether it is nature or nurture / birth or upbringing/labelling that determines if a person becomes a monster or not. The child actor is so good and of course so is the adult version ie Seo In Gook.

There are side murders and the main mystery(ies) about why Jang Na Ra (Ji An) was stalking the Seo In Gook (Lee Hyun) character, and I hope that there'll be more than just one or two other mysteries/crimes that they will get to solve together.

I've always wanted to watch a show where crime/mystery-cum-romance (with or without the comedy) mash well together and develop both the mystery side of the story and the romance equally well. This one is doing a good job. Even the darker back-story and the lighter modern day story don't seem to clash. The former gives off a creepiness and the other makes me laugh. Yes, intriguing.

Masked Prosecutor - Actually got much better now. However the "getting the bad guys" part of the plot is overshadowing the romance. But the story is holding well together and moving forward.

High Society - This is the other intriguing show I'm watching, not because the story is intriguing, but because I'm trying to decipher what each person is really saying or meaning or believing and I'm trying to gel it with what they are doing. Maybe it's more hard work than it's worth. If I give up thinking too much, I'll just watch for the couples to see if they become mature, grow close or bite the dust.

My Love Eun Dong - It is a bit of a slow, melo, illicit romance triangle kind of story. Sure to be full of angst amidst the romance. I know a lot of people love the Joo Jin Mo smoulder and he does look good with the actress, Kim Sa Rang. I'm just watching it to see how it goes, but am not investing too much into it.

Mask - Still is compelling for the promise of much romance from reluctant quarters and the solution of the complex fraud of passing a 'dead-or-otherwise-to-be-arrested-for-murder' nobody off as a politician's daughter and chaebol wife. I want to see the female lead re-connected with her real family, really in love with her husband and free from the clutches of the delusional bad guy. At the same time (a few of us) want to see the latter fall hard for her and suffer!!! *add maniacal laughter*. Yeah, it's so much fun.

Orange Marmalade - I really wanted to continue with this somehow, but it lost me when Mask and High Society came along and I had to choose. The recaps also did not make it sound too promising. I'll check in on it from time to time.
:)

About My Love, Eun Dong - yes... that adoptive family and that husband seem to be in cahoots to hide her past because of something they've done. Maybe it's nothing more than just deceiving her that her first love was the husband and he's using the guilt-trip tactic to make her stay with him, claiming that she is the reason he's a cripple. (BTW I did not like his character both in Angry Mom and here, but at least here he's more human).

It might be that he is lying, in that he might have caused the accident which robs her of her memory and not that he was trying to protect her or whatever. The preview had shots of her wanting to break up with him, I think. If he had seen her with Hyun Soo that day in the park, he might have tried to run her down and caused the accident. All surmises, but plausible in our kind of makjang show.

Their son too might not be his. I don't normally ship a married woman with another man, but if she has been so deceived, I kind of want her to have the chance to start afresh with the family she was meant to have.

Here is my take on My Love so far:

At the time she met her first love she was already engaged to the baseball player, though why is a mystery, unless she had just given up or was pressured by parents.
I suspect she told him she was calling it off, and he got road rage or something and crashed. ** But there is a mystery there also - way back I think in EP1, there was a 10 sec or so clip about her finding out that there was another woman in the car (or a different woman, not sure on the translation).

I am 99% sure the kid is not hers - I suspect it is from his (real?) (ex?) wife or girlfriend. But possible that it is hers, from first love, but the kids age does not quite match up.

So the gist of what I suspect is the he got into a wreck, perhaps with her in his car, or while she was in another car and while his real "wife" was in his car. She got killed, and left a kid. The evil mother and greedy parents agreed to some kind of deal where she would be brainwashed to raise the kid and take care of him.

@ windsun33

I do not recall a car scene with another woman... But if that's so, it adds more makjang possibilities. This is one love story where the adage 'true love does not run smooth' is going to be milked to the very last drop !!!

i think the son is his, she was pregnant when she got into the accident... well, maybe that's how i hope it turns out...

Total speculation again ... so SPOILERS MAYBE

I think with respect to Eun Dong that husband forced her in his car when she went to look for medication for Hyun Soo/Jin Mo and that she was already pregnant.

I think current husband was actually "not" boyfriend but just a friend. I think she told Hyun Soo that she was seeing someone else (current husband) to get Hyun Soo jealous because she thought that he only saw her as a little sister and she wanted to speed up things so that they would get married.

I think that current husband "kidnapped" her and that is when they got in the accident.... the same day she left Hyun Soo to get the medication.

When it was evident that she suffered amnesia and was pregnant, I think that current husband then colluded with parents to tell her a false backstory. The parents (or at least the mother) probably thought that she would have been better off with a baseball player who was being called to the States (not anticipating that he would become paraplegic) than an unemployed actor. And she was pregnant ... so you had the whole child out of wedlock scenario as well. The father probably did it because he gained something with a relationship with the baseball player... He became coach (or is it manager?) because of the relationship with the baseball players.

I hate stories about infidelity ... and normally, I would not watch this show. However, I absolutely think that the parents and the current husband are the bad guys here... they interrupted a fated romance and stole another man's fiance and his child. If they told her and she agreed to marry current husband knowing all the circumstances, then I think they would have a case for her staying at the current husband's side ... you make your bed, you lie in it. But I think they deceived her and would have continued to deceive her if Jin Mo had not found her.

Hi 4D,
I Remember You - yup... fun mysteries and fun romance... my dream fusion show LOL! and now it's even a fusion of dark mystery and light cop show.

Orange Marmalade - I stopped at Ep 6. I was thinking that Jae Min was just going to cause Ma Ri so much trouble by pursuing her. I felt he was an arrogant, selfish brat and would cause her (and probably her family) great pain by his thoughtless interference. I decided I did not want to watch the pain being played out. :) How's it been for you?

I think this Jae Min is actually a lot less selfish than his modern depiction. I'm not having issues with him. I thought this section was only going to be four episodes so I'm surprised and now show how they'll be able to bring this full circle to the present in a satisfactory way. However, if I separate it and just look and the current storyline I like it a lot more than I thought I would. I don't struggle to get through the episodes and it keeps my interests. It's not great in anything though.

There are quite a few who are enjoying High Society... and lots more enjoying commenting on it LOL! at least it can be fun to praise as well as vent and rant and still be able to watch with some hope for better character growth and enlightenment.

Because the characters like Yoon Ha are quite 'different' in how they are rendered for a kdrama, dissecting them is interesting. By trying to figure out what makes contradictory thinking-acting characters tick, we may see a reflection of ourselves or others we know and come to understand people better. I find it is true that many of us are not necessarily all that consistent in what we think and do and say... I admit to hypocrisy as well ;) So we may fuss about the characters, etc but we may also know that it's possible to be self-delusional, misguided or just naive. :)

Hello Beanies. I'm asking for a little help.
I am currently working on a K-Drama cartoon and I'm in the process of casting my actors and actresses. The (working) title is Convenience Store Clerk Vampire. The premise is that a young vampire works nights as a “P-Mart” store clerk.
A young woman has a crush on him and finds all sorts of excuses to come visit with him.
I think I want Lee Jong-Seok as my male lead. (He's always looked a little vampire-ish to me.) For my female lead I have to have a young actress who can play older than her actual age, because she has to look 18, but really be 26. I'm thinking about Ha Yeon So. (Mostly because she acted so mature when she did the radish kiss game with Kim Jong Kook on Running Man.)

But I'm open for suggestions. I also need other cast members. I am going to have cameo roles, where the clerk solves the problems of the people she brings in to see him. (He solves them by using his extensive knowledge of K-Dramas—because that is all he does. Work in a convenience store in the dark, sleep and then watch K-Dramas behind black out curtains during the day time.)

If you could cast ANYONE (it doesn't matter if they're currently in the army, I can draw them) in a K-drama, who would you cast?

As a vampire? Song Joong Ki. He looks like a baby (pinches his little-boy cheek) but can act older. He also has kind of an ethereal prettiness to him.

But for the girl - I've always wanted to see non-ethereal vampires. Cast somebody with a little meat on their bones.

Not only is he great in cameos (Missing Noir!), but he can play a nice variety of roles. He also appears more like a person who might actually stroll into a convenience store than a lot of actors his age (I.e. Not a model or flower boy).

well, let´s see.

Park Ki Woong! ( wwaaaah when is he returning...)
Go Ara
Ninja Teacher
Kim Seul Gi

and it would be an art school premise. each a different field - fashion, theater, blacksmith (Seul gi can be the female blacksmith), and, um... film. it would be through the film girls´ eyes (Go Ara) and it would show one of them stepping on others to get a lead in life, but they come together in the end.

I hope your doctor visit gets you the all clear! Fingers crossed that the blood work turns out right.

As for who to cast in your comic, are you taking alternative suggestions for the male lead (Lee Jong-seok is a good choice btw, and so is Ha Yeon-soo) or do you only want suggestions for the rest of the cast?

I would like to suggest either Kim Ji-won or Lee Yubi for the female lead - they're 23-24 but easily look 16-17.

And Lee Min-ki if you're looking for an alternative suggestion for male leads, he's in the army but you can totally break him out! (he looks totally vampiric too).

Guest appearances: Yoon Doo-joon (look at his teeth, he looks totally vampire-like), Lee Soo-hyuk (LOOK AT HIM, he's all vampire!) Kim Seul-gi, Go Ah-sung, Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won.

Thank you for all your suggestions. (I'm busy looking up everyone.) And you're so right about Lee Min-ki. And I don't think Le Soo-hyuk would even need make up. (Maybe that will be his problem, everyone thinks he's a vampire and he's not.)

Or go with a monk, a Protestant minister, and a shaman walk into a Convenience store ... got to be some good humor to be had there.

High Society
I'm still loyal to this one. The setup was very messy and the writing is not really committed to what it is trying to achieve. But I know the writer has her strengths, I'm just waiting for them to show a little bit more.

Can we get married
Just to check, I rewatched a few earlier episodes from that 2012 JTBC show by the same writer. Wow! Much, much better camera work, better sets, much higher production value through and through.
It doesn't help that Uee simply isn't a good actress, even compared to a still very unfinished Han Groo (not to mention Jung So-min).

Mask
I would say I've been watching this, because quite honestly, it has been like staring at a screensaver* for the last 7 episodes. I either have to skip through it or do something else while I watch it.
I don't hate it though -- unlike Producer or Warm&Cozy -- I can easily leave it running in the background for now. And Episode 10 left a glimmer of hope that the plot might be getting started at some point in the future.

(*) For those younger ones among you: A screensaver was a computer program that put random repetitive animations on the display while the computer wasn't in use to prevent the display from burning in a static image.

I remember you

Interesting first two episodes, not so much for the story but for the different types of character concepts and genre mix, as well as the experimental narrative techniques.
I don't like overly backstory-heavy introductions and I'm really not a fan of the ever same cheap psycho-bullshit, but apart from that, it seems like an interesting show.

Can We Get Married was a great drama- well-written, mostly free of cliches and not obsessed with making perfect good-natured Candies out of its female leads. And even without considering how young the four main leads were at the time, they were fantastic.

re: High Society, I just cannot shake the 'poor man's Nice Guy' vibes off it, and it's weird because I like Uee and love Sung Joon. But they just seem either whimsical or far too opaque, Nice Guy at least gave you more of a sense of the leads' motivations/how they got that way.

I actually find myself wondering if I'd like this more if Han Groo was the female lead, as the first rumours put out. She and Sung Joon did have some crazy chemistry going on in parts of CWGM, I wonder if they could have defeated the curse of the poor writing for the leads in HS and just had sparks together anyway (like Yoo Yeon-seok and Kang Sora are doing in the thankless Warm & Cozy).

Han Groo's Dong-bi is essentially the blueprint for YH in High Society.
Then again, Uee is almost the opposite of Han Groo: no physical acting at all, very limited expressiveness, but some subtle touches that Han Groo back then didn't have.

0

Required fields are marked *

you have it spot-on, High Society is essentially CWGM's Dong-bi grafted into the framework of Nice Guy. And it's not even a quarter as good as either of its two 'inspirations'.

I find Uee weirdly samey in all her roles - some of her fans like to talk about how she's the best idol actress around, but honestly I think we've seen better out of idols. If we really had to have an idol actress in this role, part of me wonders what Choi Soo-young (My Spring Days) would have made of it.

Required fields are marked *

Haha I always see it as the poor man's version of Que Será, Será, but Nice Guy works surprisingly well too, now that I think about it. I would have preferred Han Groo, too! Since UEE's not doing much acting, whenever she's on screen I just freak out looking at how thin she's gotten, which is not so fun.

Hey guys~hope you're all well!

So for now I'm just watching Mask. (Dropped School 2015 and Orange Marmalade, I know I'm fickle) I haven't caught up with everyone yet but I heard that there are some plot holes...? Still firmly watching it for the OTP, especially Minwoo. He makes my heart ache.
Regarding to people complaining about Jisook's meek personality, I'm still okay with it. I mean, there were some points when she stopped tucking her chin in-e.g. Ep.8, when Seokhoon lied to her about her mom being sick, she retorted after his threat not to lie to her about her family. I think and hope that her breaking point will show when her family's in danger.

Hahaha, your mum is so funny, she still calls her Jo dae hee ?, well watching Jo dae hee in QOA then mask me feel less sorry for her as Ji sook, I keep expecting her to join ranks with the villan even if she's good in Mask.
I wish I could watch them both with my mum,but I learnt not to bother, whenever we try to watch a drama together, she keeps asking me why my people keep screaming (she calls Koreans my people), which I never noticed before. Then just when the story gets good you turn to look at her and she's asleep. When she wakes up she asks what happened and just when you think she's getting back into it, she gets up and starts doing other things.it's frustrating, I'll just have to find a drama buddy elsewhere. I can't deal with her.I want to watch with someone engrossed as I am.

Yeah, she still calls her by that name! I kind of do too! ...... And oh my goodness, what you just said about her joining ranks with the villain in Mask! I'm not kidding, my mom said that this week!!!

Ok,I've just finished the last episod. Is it weird that I've cried rather than hate or dislike Dae hee,I feel sorry for her. She's a victim too that turned in too a bad person. I don't know who I feel more sorry for her, hya ru or Do hoon who never had a chance to tell his mum he knows the truth.it's a good drama if only I didn't have to see Drop top cafe every 2 minutes, I'm telling you this is the first time Ppl has exhausted me,I think it's shown 5 times per episode.

Twenty was okay. Cute but a bit shallow – some of the characters were quite flat and all of them rather predictable.

Woobie's character was an a**, beginning to end. Just spoiled, blind to what his friends are going through and mad at his friend at the end for something he suggested at the beginning.

And they all looked a bit too old for the roles they were playing.

Not that this makes me like Woobie or Kang Ha-neul any less. Lee Joon-Ho I wasn't familiar with, his character probably had the most interesting story – LJH was serviceable in the role, but a more experienced actor could have added a lot of more depth.

Hi, beanies! It's been a week of ups and downs for me - my sister-in-law died after contracting pneumonia (We weren't close - she really wasn't speaking to any of the family for some years now, which makes this weird, as we have to handle all the arrangements.)

BUT on the good news side of the ledger, our country's Supreme Court just ruled that gay and lesbian people have the right to marry whoever they darn well please, anywhere in the country! (This is especially happy for me, as my oldest daughter is a lesbian.)

On to K-drama!

What I'm Watching:

Hidden Identity: Despite some issues (their tech usage seems a little...um...weird. Some stuff is cutting-edge, and some stuff seems like they bought it at the discount store.) Kim Bum is great, though - he really sells the self-loathing. This also hooked my 'I don't like kdrama' husband. Heh.

The Lover: It wasn't fully translated, but after last week's cliffhanger, I couldn't wait. Oof, right in the fangirl. But it seemed like everyone had a happyish ending, even though there was precious little comedy in the last episode.

What I'm Watching, cont:

Opas: This is actually a Thai comedy about a cop who can see ghosts. Because I have to sample all supernatural shows, I tried it, and it's pretty funny.

What I want to watch:

Scholar Who Walks the Night: OMG, Lee Joon Ki as a vampire. As a smart, sexy vampire. Please don't let there be too much crying.

K-drama Moments:

1. "Misaeng" came in, and is out to the first patron. I had to sell it because let's face it, "office drama" is not very sexy. But you and I know how fantastic it is, so I have no doubt it will be well-received.

2. I tried making japchae for the first time last night - it was delicious, though there is no way I'm cooking all 15 veggies separately. The dangmyeon (that's the right word, yeah?) were interesting - I really liked the flavor & the texture was different. The kids loved it.

3. I've started doing segments & a few subtitles over at Viki - it's a lot of fun and very interesting. Because of what projects are available, I've watched portions of shows I would never look at - Chinese romances, Italian historicals, Spanish reality shows (just don't.) I remember more Spanish & less Italian than I thought, and I even got to use my miniscule Chinese ("Hey, she said 'thank you'! I know that word!")

Well, every day of the week is now filled with a drama to watch. Too much time spent waiting for the subs, watching and rewatching. I feel like my obsession is returning...

High Society--I have a thing for chaebols looking for love. What I don't understand is why in every KDrama the chaebols have abusive parents. Many wealthy people are excellent parents, have a social conscience, and are wonderful and interesting people. I guess that wouldn't make a drama though.

I Remember You--So many weird happenings. I mean, is it normal for a child to wander into a cell and have a conversation with a serial killer? And locking your child in the basement to protect society? Honestly. What person would think that was the right thing to do? The father was one sick man. I hate it when the plot devices are just too unbelievable. I will probably give it a few more weeks, though, just to see.

Warm and Cozy--Okay, enough already. It's episode 14 and they are still confusing each other with misunderstandings. Personally, I think she'd be much better off if he left and she moved on with her life.

Oops! Just saw the time. Back later with more.

Maybe I've read too much crime novels (both true to life and fiction) but I do believe the it is possible for a parent to lock his child in a basement or well keep him in the house for "safety reasons". Yes, there many sick or different people out there.

The father is just too involved in crimes and what killers can do, that he didn't know what to do anymore. I interpreted his reasons as not to protect society but to make his child "normal" and not be the monster he think his son is.

It's still weird and shocking though.

Maybe he was afraid on how society or the environment outside will make Lee Hyun worse. He wanted to do it in his own way. He was still teaching him lessons and what not.

Wait hahaha I'm sorry it's like I'm defending his actions but I'm not. I was crying and shouting "what the hell" when Dad was explaining his plan to Hyun. I agree that it was indeed utterly crazy and incompetent of him as a parent. I was just saying that it's quite possible in real life for parents to actually do this (I read somewhere that there were incidents reported). They think, in their own crazy way, that this was the best plan for their kids safety and well-being.

But all in all, it' still a crime to do such an act.

High Society

In "Can we get married" (same author), the main couple are a bitchy and demanding poor girl with a extremely overbearing and materialistic single mother, and a naive and sweet rich boy with just as naive and sweet parents. He isn't a Top100-chaebol, but his family is very rich and part of the chaebol circle.

I really liked the concept, and I thought it was very convincing in terms of real personality development.

Jung-hoon's mother in CWGM was every bit as overbearing as the girl's mother. She was naive, yes, but in an extremely indulged and coddled way, and quite wrapped up in mental competitions with other Gangnam wives - she could be really bratty if she didn't get exactly what she wanted.

But I did like the drama actually showing us some realistic conflicts between parents and children that were rooted in realistic issues (the desire to establish your own home and independent life, not wanting to have a parent controlling your every move) instead of High Society's I-hate-my-life-give-me-a-condo level of absurdity.

Warm and Cozy is such a disappointing drama especially given the outstanding leads that it has.

I think the biggest problem with this drama is that the Hong Sisters forgot to develop a plot. The H/h keep circling the same point over and over because if they would actually get together there would be nothing left from a plot perspective.

I guess after watching Healer (my gold standard of what a drama should be), I now expect a lot more from the dramas that I watch, including enough substance in the plot that it can survive the H/h actually becoming a couple prior to the last 5 minutes of the final episode. Healer proved that it is possible to create a drama where the H/h are together (and stay together) well before the final episode. All it takes is enough substance in the plot that the drama doesn't have to resort to lack of communication or noble idiocy in order to kill time until the final episode.

Warm and Cozy is so frustrating. I dropped it as well. Could not take it anymore.

I find it interesting some of the comments I read on Viki on how people want to really try Kim Chee because it looks soooooooo good ....

I tried it for the first time last year, and thought it was delicious. I've since tried cucumber & radish kimchi in addition to cabbage - I still like the cabbage best.

I tried kimchi dumplings (YUMMY) & the spicy kimchi stew this year, too, and thought it was also delicious, although I have to admit the stew was just too spicy for me (but tasty!)

And bear in mind, I am the whitest of white girls - I grew up in the South frying everything and eating nothing spicier than black pepper.

I have yet to try any Korean dish that I didn't like (though I am leery of the ice-cold noodles because that sounds gross.) :)

there is a kimchee recipe in Jamie´s Yearbook for Estonia. don´t know if it is in other language versions as well. seems accurate enough though. I have made kimchee a couple of times, thing is I am used to hot tastes and fermented things. so I eat it like salad. if I want to add it to dishes I sprinkle in more chilli flakes

Hi, everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster on OT.
I've recently dropped quite a few dramas, starting with Warm and Cozy (ugh!) and Let's Eat S2 (although this one is still on hold, maybe one day I'll finish it). So now the only kdramas in my life are
Hidden Identity - I sure hope it won't go down the drain, as I liked the first three episodes (haven't seen the fourth yet).
and
Healer - sweet baby Jesus, why haven't I watched it earlier, how on earth did I miss it? I'm currently on ep 15 and the feeels, oh, the feeels!!! The chemistry, the suspense, everything is so good. What will I do when I finish it???

Welcome to OT @BlackDog

Wow!!! It's great to be enjoying Healer fresh and with all the feels. It was one sweet obsession, that show. Ruined us good for other shows for ages and ages... there are other good shows, some even with better execution, etc, however the feels was what got me (and many of us).

Yes I want Ji Chang Wook back now!!! He seems to be still carefully choosing his next project.

In the meantime if you still have not got enough of him or Healer, and if you haven't already, come play on our Healer fun poll and join in JCW's birthday party on 5th July. The links are in Comment 7 above! :)

omg is today friday? I am sort of all mixed up.

I am not having a very good day, my Mom´s in hospital again. 4th time the past 3 months. very accute stomach ache, something with the guts... and of course she doesn´t call me, I only find out THROUGH MY AUNT 15 hours later. what am I, a rag? You refuse to call me? No, you wipe your feet there, i am not even good enough for that. well, I got permission to leave work early and go to the hospital to take her some clothes, water, tea, slippers and a charger.

I hope she gets home day after tomorrow. She seemed ok-ish.
all these hospital scenes in dramas, it is not nice to be in that situation. trust me. thinking what more I can do. I am not a good cook. I washed some clothes and cleaned... but she won´t bloody tell me, what needs be done. gah. how can one help a person so stubborn?

besides I get bad panic attacks in hospitals - I had to only look out the window at the trees and sky, when I look at the wall, it seems to fall down on me, and the room gets all tiny and crimpled and I get dizzy. I am like those eccentric chaebols with my phobia, except it doesnt feel funny at all. It feels like you are held captive in a cage.

anyway, fighting! it will be ok. I hope.

I am impatiently waiting for Night Scholar. until then, watched bits and pieces of old dramas. Gosh, how much time has passed and the scene from I Hear Your Voice where the phone rings in the other room with that creepy song, it still scares the hell out of me.

Question: what have been the most terrifying drama moments to you, that you still cannot think of with ease? whether a dangerous or creepy situation or a narrow escape, or a character moment that gave you chills?

This doesn't really count but I still vividly remember the opening scene of Soul/Han because of how striking of a scene it was. Actually I still vividly remember most of Soul/Han, it remains one of my favorite dramas, and I suppose it's as close as dramaland gets to creepy, for me at least.

Hope your mum gets better and is ok soon, like you said.

As for scary/creepy scenes - definitely the I Hear Your Voice phone scene you mentioned. And parts of White Christmas (every episode had these) which showed nothing but the empty school staircases and grounds, and still creeped me out enough that I had to put the lights on to watch the episode/could only watch during the daytime.

In jdramas - there's a scene in xxxHolic where a seance/storytelling session breaks, and Watanuki (the protagonist) is cornered by spirits with no face. I knew how it was in the manga but the drama scared me even more.

I only saw the anime but gahhh that episode scared the bejesus out of me x_x Even the guy in the suit was scary. . .

Uhmm is xxxHolic (jdrama) worth watching? My friend said the first episode okay and that was the last thing I heard from her hahaha

The xxxHolic jdrama is excellent but it's only 8 episodes long so it obviously can't cover all the story arcs in the manga. But it's a great adaptation, and really well shot and cast. Give it a try sometime!

(and aaagh, that scene haunted my nightmares for two days afterwards - and I'm not the type who usually remembers dreams)

The phobia that one develops after spending (sometimes too much) time in a hospital is so common and yet not easy to be dealt with. I speak from experience. Parents suffering from chronic diseases/conditions do not want to burden their children with their problems. Sad but true...Be strong but don't struggle too much, that's my friendly advice^^

Mmmm. (SPOILER ALERT for Vampire Prosecutor Season 2)

I just finished re-watching School 2015 with my mom, hoping I missed something, nope Yi-ahn is still a boring piece of cardboard whose entire existence is wrapped up in Eun-byul from beginning to end with no change. As my creative writing teacher always said "show not tell" which you'd think would be easier with a visual medium, apparently not Actually that's not entirely true we see snippets of Yi-ahn's personality outside of Eun-byul, violent, angry, possessive, good choice Eun-bi, slow clap. Not that she should have picked Tae-gwang yet, but definitely not Yi-ahn, ugh. Sorry, I don't think I've ever been so annoyed by a show in my 4 1/2 years of drama watching, holy has it been that long already, anyways I'm done ranting and thinking about school.

Hm, I guess that's all I wanted to say this week, oh well.

I'm pretty happy with the ending for Producer (and with the drama in general, thanks to a well-paced and realistic ending), and now waiting for Warm & Cozy to be put out of its misery. (seriously, Yoo Yeon-seok and Kang Sora are worth their weight in gold for not only having to put up with the nonsensical scenarios we're seeing for the last several episodes now, but also for selling their characters and making me care about them despite that).

Waiting for Scholar Who Walks The Night now - I really hope it's decent. I already had to see Kang Sora subjected to playing out a stupid plotless drama, I don't want to have to see another actress I love - Lee Yubi - doing the same thing.

And in movies, I finally watched Twenty, and was REALLY glad I watched it alone. It's hilarious, well-acted and really touching in places (I have to give full credit to the cast for that, especially Kim Woo-bin, who isn't afraid to make himself look like a really stupid asshole, but somehow nails the boyish naivete and bravado of his role really well).

But something like 50 percent of the dialogue (conservative estimate here) revolves around sex, and in pretty explicit language too. Definitely not something most of us kdrama watchers are used to!

(I mean, name a single drama in which a girl lectures her brother's bff on mastubation techniques......I still cannot believe Lee Yubi said that dialogue with a straight face. And let's not even get into the boys' dialogues. I haven't laughed this much in a while, but some of it was 'omg did they actually just SAY that?!" laughter)

And the scene I referred to is absolutely priceless.

King of Mask Singer? Is that like Masked Prosecutor? (god I hope not, because MP is beyond stupid and I dumped it early on)

nope, it is a music show where idols, actors and others sing while hiding behind a mask, and advance through 3 rounds, then challenge previous King. the jury and 99 public judges vote based on who they want to hear more, and the one who loses removes his / her mask. though i dont know korean celebrities that well outside dramas, I am still in awe when an athlete or comedian or a dancing idols makes a good performance

And I can't not love anyone who delivers those lines with a straight face. The one about lubricant alone was priceless.

That was one of my issues with the film: the girl characters were super-flat. Like Woobie's high school girl friend (why does she stick with him?), the actress, and Kang Ha-neul's crush were all pretty uninteresting individuals.

I get they had to focus on the boys, but good screenwriters can make supporting characters feel real and rounded even with little screentime. I checked the director's filmography – he hasn't directed much but he has been a screenwriter on a number of comedies that I have seen that were all decent – light but forgettable entertainment for tired Fridays but none as bitingly funny they could have been. Nor with any further depth – which IS possible even in comedies.

0

the actress part really felt like it belonged to a different movie, and I never got how Dong-woo started liking So-hee (even though I could totally get her liking him, since that was presented as a long-standing and very blatant crush that she doesn't even try to hide.

I also never quite got why So-min stuck with Chi-ho through all his philandering either (I get that she's in a rut of habit when it comes to him, but still), the most realistic part of her arc was actually her rebound.

0

i was howling at the sister's constant referral to her brother's activity, questioning all his friends if they do that, too! she and junho were too cute for words...

0

yeah, little sis is an absolute hoot, it takes some flair to be able to pull off a role like that and makes her a lot more memorable than just being the usual cute and precocious baby sister.

And she and Junho were very cute together, but looking at her and Woobin at the breakfast table made me miss Vampire Idol.

0

@pogo true about the actress part. that character could have had an interesting story, but we barely saw any of it. Chi-ho, the pretty rich boy, going into film was cliché.

I guess Dong-woo just always took So-hee for granted but kind of got used to having her around? I guess once they were in the same class but without the other guys there, he got to be with her own his own (rather than see her tag along with her brother). I don't think he ever really thinks about it but maybe by the time she confesses, he just feels comfortable since they've shared all kinds of things including the unspeakable? It's not really made clear in the film, but ultimately I think their relationship has a lot of future – it's based in friendship and openly talking about any- and everything.

With So-min, I think the issue is again that we just don't know anything about her and that she gets no screen time at all. Girls do indeed stick with philanderers like that, but the film just gives us single-line explanations rather than actually giving us insight into her character.

0

alua- that's true, of all the relationships presented in the film Dong-woo and So-hee do seem to be the most solid, because they actually talk.

I do get that his repeating a year with her gets him to see her in a new light, and we get plenty of conversation in their handful of scenes, but it's not really clear at what point with the two of them onscreen his view of her goes from 'pesky kid/friend's little sister' to the girl he likes enough to give up on his dream for. Kinda like the Han Yi-ahn (School 2015) problem, but at least this time with better actors who could sell the connection in other ways, so it doesn't bother me nearly as much.

with So-min, I actually get why she started dating Kyung-jae, way more than why she stayed with Chi-ho in the first place.

0

*spoiler* I thought Twenty was okay and entertaining for a coming of age movie, no surprises in the story at al. I hated the song choice for the fight scene, though - All By Myself - don't know why, but it grated on my nerves to no end. Woo Bin in all his manchild glory ``

Happy OT guys! I'm still jobless after graduating almost a month ago. However I promised myself that I will find by October so fighting!! Here's to the "real world". Hope it doesn't bite me hahaha. . .

In drama news, I'm currently only watching one drama, sad but at least I could invest all my emotions on one show hahaha

I Remember You. Two episodes in and it's so good. I love the camera work, the music, and of course the story so far. The series has such a big potential but I just hope it doesn't lose track. I remember You're All Surrounded and it was really good in the beginning then became so so towards the end. Hoping this drama keeps the quality from start to finish.

Oh and I almost forgot, Park Bo-Gum will finally appear on episode 3?! Yeah! He was so adorable in Cantabile Tomorrow, can't wait to see him ^^

The Producers. Looks like I won't marathon the last 7 episodes. I stopped at episode 5, missed 6-10 because I was on vacation yet I skimmed the recaps, but I have no energy to finish the series. Sorry Kim Soo Hyun :(

High Society Dropped this already but I'm just reading the recaps to see how Ji-yi and Chan-soo's relationship progress (I could smell the cheesy goodness while reading the recaps, hahaha), and what really is going on with Joon-ki.

2) I demand actors w/o eating disorders, (extreme) cosmetic surgeries and very, very heavy make-up.
3)Last but not least, I DEMAND no more cutting dramas in big networks orrrrr in cable ones *cough, tvN, cough*
Well, sounds more like a praying than some random demands, XD!!

3. I demand to see Yoon Eun Hye in a drama soon.

1)I demand female characters that are witty, useful and kickass. Don't be a senior detective but forget how to fight off bag guys when you're being attacked(masked prosecutor), or a weepy wallflower who makes the wrong choice every time (mask).

That's really it. Everything could be chalked up to cultural differences, that I am willing to understand/look over for the moment.

I Demand the banishment of the following scenes :accidentally falling on lips, tripping and accidental hugs, saving from cars and motorcycles on the side of the road, breaking heels? and safes that are behind paintings.
I demand equal rights for chalebol families not all of them are horrible just as not all poor families are good.
I demand to be skinny without exercise while I eat what I want hehe, I deviated but since I'm demanding I can dream can't I.
And while I'm at it, I demand Jo in sung and Hyun bin to be my fans while I magically talk to them in my fluent Korean and sign for them my autograph and allow them to take selfies with me.

Only a couple of dramas I am really invested in right now, but watching a couple others somewhat casually.

Mask This went pretty flatline and messy for EP8 and 9, but seems to be getting back on track with EP10. I suspect that our heroine may not be as dumb as we think she is - for one thing, I think she is now in cahoots with her brother to set up something, perhaps a sting? Couple of other little clues make me think that she is doing things behind the scenes that we have not seen yet.

My Love, Eun-dong This is better than I expected - mainly because of the mystery as to how she ended up being the baseball players not-real wife.

Hidden Identity Still early in the series, but looks interesting so far. So far not much has come out about the early relationship between stalker girl and hero.

High Society Kind of watching, not making much sense to me, but hoping things will get clearer.

That is pretty much it for current dramas. Since Viki is finally on ROKU, am going back and watching some that I missed before.

Mask has to be the weirdest K-drama I have ever seen. I literally cannot get a handle on it at all. It's like the audience is deliberately not being give all the information it needs to know what exactly is happening. The three main actors, all of whom are competent and able, are acting like they are acting in a certain way, if you get what I mean, especially Soo Ae as Ji-sook. The character is acting like she's terrified and mousy but she's not really. The same goes for Seok-hoon and Min-woo. The characters are acting; they are all wearing masks which is, I guess, why the drama is called Mask. This is hard for actors to pull off.

Late to the party again. ^^

Funny where discovering KDramas has led me.

I have started thinking about religion in South Korea. I am researching Zen (Seon) Buddhism. This led me to discover the first Korean monk who brought Buddhist teaching to USA. Master Seung Sahn established the Kwan Um School of Zen. I ordered the CD and chanting book. I have been practicing bowing and chanting every morning, in hopes of some day going to Korea for a Temple Stay.

After considering their list of Zen centers, I decided I wanted to visit the ones in Providence, Rhode Island and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Road trip!

And of course, my road trip included a selection of Korean Pop and language CDs for the ride.

I also brought along a book to read. It is called "Dinner with Buddha" and is a fiction story about two brothers-in-law making a roadtrip together. One of the men is a monk.

So at the ridiculously early hour of 5:45 am, I showed up at their doorstep. They dressed me in the grey monk robe, and together we did 108 bows, chanting, and sitting meditation. After, they kindly invited me to breakfast.

The Cambridge Zen Center has been around since 1972 and has 35 practitioners in residence.

Next week, I will travel to the Providence Zen Center.

Meanwhile, on the drive back I stopped to visit my aunt and we went to the New England Peace Pagoda in Leverett, Massachusetts. My second cousins were visiting, and teenage Molly and I bonded over discussions of her love of Anime and learning Japanese and KPop bands. I showed her my calligraphy brush pens and chinese brush painting. She showed me her Manga drawings.

This week, Hanja for Cimi is river 川 강 gang. I misremembered in chatting about it with a Korean friend and called it 간 gan which means liver. Haha!

한강 Hangang is the Han River.

I learned that in Korea, to clean potatoes, they put them in a big barrel with water and stir it with a big stick. The Zen Center is like potatoes rubbing together to get clean ... by people rubbing against each other, their minds become clean/clear.

Thought that was an interesting analogy.

Wonder if I am ready to get tossed in and rubbed together with other humans.

Felt very Korean that the doing things in unison as part of a community was an important part of their spiritual path. Almost all my meditation has been alone in my house. A very American/individualistic approach.

Ack. Late again. Lol.

Crime Scene S2 - This show has been so awesome(though I still think S1 was more intense despite the cases being simple when compared to S2). *spoiler* Jang Jin being the one who stabbed PD was sort of expected since he hasn't been a criminal once. Pyo Chang Won is awesome! Lol I can't believe I watch this ep in bits and pieces for a whole week because I've been falling asleep. That autopsy report and the revelation that PD was already dead when JJ killed him had me like :o. Their reactions were too real and I quickly want tuesday to come but I also don't want it to because I don't want it to end yet. I hope S3 comes quickly. In the meantime, I'll have The Genius S4!!!!!!!!!

So I'm off to catching up!

As we enjoy our daily dose of Kdramas and Kmovies, let us not forget reality and the harshness of it. Please, please I ask of you to take a moment of your time to google "Lee Jung Hee" and read her tragic story. Apparently, the government is trying to cover up her story from the public. Such shame and sorrow. Let us help reminds the public of her plea and let us help her get the justice that her sons and herself ever so deserve. Thank You.

Oh how horrible!!! RL that's dramatic and drama in RL. Those with the power to take down online news and articles really do exist and must be in the pay or under threat from some others with the means to bribe or hurt them. :(

Things like this happening always makes me wonder about whether stuff I watch from dramas are for real and when it happens for real, it just makes me feel creeped out that even the government (who are supposed to protect its citizens) are corrupted enough to play with lives or turn a blind eye.

If you read the accounts, there was no "powerful force" that took down any news or articles. She was prevented from going on talk shows and the like by her husband/family, due to (a very stupid) Korean law where the "head of household" has considerable control via "power of attorney" for any family affairs - which would include any contracts for appearing on shows.

But it appears that the main culprit here is the police (what a surprise).

The Time We Were Not In Love. I know I should hate and roll my eyes to this type of drama. But I can't get enough of Ha Ji Won. Perhaps because its the first episode, but it just flew by... I am eagerly awaiting episode 2.

I just watched "The Time We Were Not In Love" too. Our 30 Something-year-old actor and actress put up a credible performance as 17-18 year olds. I felt they may have over-acted a bit as young 'uns but on the whole they were good. I do not anticipate much twists and turns in the story, just a whole lot of relationship advice and different occasions of heartbreak with different partners for the both of them, and moments of consolation.

It's interesting that Won is so adamant about not loving Ha Na and gives no reason why. Ha Na seems drawn to younger men, which may be part of the reason for her failed dating episodes.

I look forward to watching Yoon Kyun Sang again and even Lee Joo Seung after Pinocchio (6 months ago already!!!). Yoon Kyun Sang stole the show when he appeared before. I'd like to see how he fairs next to Lee Jin Wook. They both have a special charism and draw attention.

Correction, "charisma" not charism. :)

"It’s interesting that Won is so adamant about not loving Ha Na and gives no reason why" - this reminds of me of 'I need romance 2' . And it does not help that Yi JinWook looks/acts same in here too. Also this show reminds me of '9outs2ins' because of younger male BF stuff. I feel like I watched all episodes watching just episode 1. (Still I like it).

My Beautiful Bride

This drama is super awesome, if you're looking for some romance, mystery and action this has it all. Even though it's been four episode i already started re watching without subs trying to put the clues together. All the actors are doing a wonderful job in portraying their characters. I highly recommend to watch , once you get to episode 2 you'll be hooked.
Go sung hee, I can say she is doing a good job as her character, plus our hero played by Kim Moo-Yul is just absolutely handsome and so damn, i don't know how to explain this but just know i would trade spots with go sung hee in heart beat to have kim moo-yul be my future husband in this drama.
