The gang is assembled for Answer Me 1988
by girlfriday
Go Kyung-pyo, Hyeri, Park Bo-gum
Well that only took forever. Answer Me 1988, the third installment of tvN’s throwback youth series from PD Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung, has at last announced its main cast after months of speculation, rumors, retractions, and recriminations. First, the good news: Go Kyung-pyo (Cantabile Tomorrow)!! I love him and his awesome comedic chops, and I’m thrilled that he’s scored his first leading role in a show that’s easily going to make him a breakout star.
Idol Hyeri (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) has been attached to the show for quite some time as the lead character, and she’s now been confirmed as the headliner. I know that Jung Eun-ji and Go Ara weren’t established actresses before starring in Answer Me 1997 and Answer Me 1994, but I’m still not excited about Hyeri’s casting when they could’ve gone for acting chops over cute. She’ll have a lot to prove, but I hope for the drama’s sake that she’s got some hidden depth we’ve never seen before.
Park Bo-gum is also confirmed, after an early announcement. I’m looking forward to some bromance between him and Go Kyung-pyo, since these two have been co-stars in three other projects before this one (Cantabile Tomorrow, Chinatown, Roaring Currents). I know we were promised that 1988 wouldn’t have a husband-hunting framing device, but that hardly means we won’t be getting a love triangle. Somehow knowing that they’re buddies in real life would ease the pain, I think.
The rest of the gang includes a few newer faces to dramaland, most of them from indie movies: film actress Ryu Hye-young (Spy, My Dictator, Slow Video), newbie Ryu Joon-yeol (Social Phobia), and funnyman Ahn Jae-hong (C’est Si Bon, Twenty, Joku King). Rounding out the youths are Lee Dong-hwi (Divorce Lawyer in Love, Joseon Gunman), and musical actor Choi Sung-won.
Lee Il-hwa, Sung Dong-il, and Kim Sung-kyun will return as Mom, Dad, and a neighbor ajusshi, in the story about three neighboring families. As a franchise that’s known for casting fresh faces and launching careers, expectations have been high for producers to deliver a buzzworthy ensemble for the third time in a row. I’m pretty confident that Go Kyung-pyo will be in his element; here’s hoping that the rest of the ’88 gang is willing to put themselves out there for a laugh.
Answer Me 1988 airs on Fridays and Saturdays in September.
Ryu Joon-yeol, Ryu Hye-young, Ahn Jae-hong

Yeah I'm not gonna watch it either.. Even if it ends up having mega ratings or good reviews I won't watch it.. Hyeri is cute on variety shows and all but I just can't stand her acting if somehow she "improves" I still won't believe it and it's not worth it for me!

What is so wrong with the picture above? yap, HYERI! why, oh WHY must it be her? so many, like there's a sea of actresses ten times prettier and can truly act so why her? coz she is popular as an idol? flimsy excuse.
There's the divine Go Kyung pyo, who finally snagged a lead role and this is the female lead you got for him? Aish! why not KIM SEUL GI, they had such a chemistry in Flower Boy next Door, and we all know she is very good.

Yup, I am going to pass as well. I can't possibly waste 16 hours of my life watching someone as terrible as Hyeri. Sorry, I am allergic to cute and have an unceasing animosity towards idols and their management who assume that the ability to smile, warble a tune, dance a few steps, and shill many, many products means you can act. Nope. Not even close.

Yay for Go Kyung-pyo but I'm not really looking forward to Hyeri. Also, I thought Lee Yi-Kyung was also in consideration, wonder what happened to him? I was actually looking forward to him getting a proper role in a drama for once, unlike the sidey characters he's always played.

Well I'm pumped for the guys but I've seen Hyeri in two shows now and she's shown me nothing to be excited over (and no I don't think she's had time to improve since Hyde/Seonam). So now I'm torn since I imagine she'll be in a lot of scenes...but I'm so happy for our male leads since they both can impact me with even just a few lines.

I was never against idol casting since alot of them.wanted to go into acting but was just convinced to go through idol land instead.
Unfortunately, Hyeri has been on my bad books for a while now, namely doing some unlikeable acts. This one is not yet a pass but I'll wait for reviews and end of the show so I have the option to.fast forward.

Kinda disappointed it wasn't Han Groo they picked as the female lead (I really shouldn't get my hopes up with casting rumors). I've seen Go Kyungpyo and Park Bogum in other shows and pretty sure they'll be great. Still have to catch up to Reply 1994 but we'll see, we'll see.

Reply franchise is so popular and the PDs are skilled enough to try and disguise her poor acting. She'll be another Suzy, terrible at acting but liked for her pretty face and benefiting from writers and PD who will work hard to disguise her lack of skill.

Pretty much everyone nowadays.
Hyeri had two main roles since December, this is her third. Han Groo has one cameo in an entire year. Well, at least she got a lot of news articles about shows that rejected her ...

They REJECTED HAN GROO?? How is that possible, did she audition?
First mistook hyerie for Lee Yoobi, now this. Great.
Go Ara had more roles under her belt when she did Reply than Han Groo, so you can't blame it to her experience.

I don't think they rejected Han Groo. It was more like denying that she was ever in the running for a role. So I guess she never had a chance? That sucks. But I don't think K-ent is trustworthy. Haha. Casting rumors are rumors after all.

YAAAAAAAAS. I actually had the pause the show for a good minute when they were questioned about the ring because I didn't think I could face the second hand embarrassment. But oh my gosh, SO worth the wait. I actually really liked their exes, so it wasn't as horrible as the wait could have been, but OTPPPPPPPPP. The fact that he respects her opinion? Won't stop her from seeking her own happiness because it doesn't involve hike? Confronting emotions he hates dealing with? He's grown SO much, and Amy is so much more likeable and adorable when he's around to ease her stress. I thought I'd have a bitter taste in my mouth with the Captain and Gina subplot, but knowing they're safe makes me so so so excited for season 3.

I feel bad for Hyeri's bandmate Minah, she can act much better than Hyeri and was the most popular in their group until that Real Men show. But now because Hyeri got popular for 3 seconds of whining, she gets opportunities she has no talent for.

yeah, Minah >>>>>>>> her in terms of acting talent in her group.
It's ridiculous that idol casting even ignores idols who are actually talented and goes by popularity alone. (and Minah can't exactly be some unknown, considering I have seen mentions of her in dramas - my barometer of whether an idol is sorta known to the Korean public or not).

Jeeezzz Looks like I'm out although I love Reply Me series. The rest of the cast are A ok except for Hyeri. I wouldn't mind her in one of the supporting roles, but definitely not as the lead actress. She hasn't reached that level to carry a drama yet. She should have improved on her craft until she's ready for the lead role. Haven't they learnt from Blood? It's not like she received positive feedback in her acting gigs. Her agency must have been powerful enough to get her a lead role in a popular franchise.

I'm kind of hoping this does decently so they can do an early 2000s version. Surely enough time has passed now? And cameos would be much easier. I mean, still have the older singers around, but also the rise of soloists (Rain, Se7en, Hyori, BoA), second generation idols and then the babies of the third (DBSK, SS501, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, SNSD, 2PM, SHINee). And new wave of cult dramas!!! Boys over Flowers! The new ways to use the net really revolutionised the workings of the entertainment industry and fan base, everything has been morphing and changing at top speed, so I think it would be fascinating.

Have You not hear my prayer?
I may be blinded by my hatred err annoyance for that-three-second-cutesy-aaang Hyeri. But watching her in both Seonam and Hyde really proves she was casted because she is the 'IT' girl ala Suzy not as 'newbie with hidden talent'.
Well I can stand robotic-Suzy in DH. so finger crossed I can withstand her through out the drama.

Suzy in DH (in fact, in all her roles) had a skilled writer and director working her butt off to cover for the fact that her lead 'actress' could not act to save her life. And she still sucked.
I'm hoping Hyeri will at least do a little better than that if the Answer Me 1988 team is going to tailor the role to suit her (limited) abilities, since for her previous dramas they don't seem to have done anything like that.

As for Hyeri - never seen her act (in fact, had no clue as to who she was), and while I can understand the doubts, let's remember that the same things were said about the 2 females leads for the prior 2 Reply series.
A good script and a good PD can usually pull out a good performance from one who hasn't yet shown it, so let's just wait and see.

Not really about Jung Eunji since back wjen Reply 1997 was casting no one thought cable shows could get that popular so there was little comment about the leads.

Well, don't know about the Korean netizens, but there was a lot of harrumphing about casting an idol for the female lead in Reply 1997 on here and other US-centric sites like Soompi.
And beyond getting a reaction, think the PDs had to see something in Hyeri - that there was enough in the screen test for them to be confident that they can pull out a good performance out of her - let's just hope they are right.

Me too. AM 1997 is still the best one of the franchise for me. AM 1994 was too much of a one trick pony, relying mostly on gimmicks and the love triangle. 97 really hit a home run with it's depiction of lasting friendships, love and being a crazy fangirl. Sung Shi Won will go down in Kdrama history as one of the more awesome heroines out there.

um, one of those things is not like the others.
Like I've seen some people say, Minah would really have been a better choice if Answer Me 1988 absolutely had to cast an idol, Hyeri's popular but her acting stinks.
I feel like the producers are deliberately going for the worst actress on offer just to see what they can make of her (you are kidding me if you think SHE was the best of all the actors that auditioned) and to troll us all. She's going to be a second Suzy - popular for her image but rubbish at acting, yet keeps getting roles because of her popularity.

That said, her acting is no worse than Suzy's, and Suzy is worse considering almost all her writers and PDs bend over backwards trying to tailor roles to her extremely limited acting abilities and she is at best, mediocre. I'll see if this girl does any better with the Answer Me writers and PD going to work on her.

I tend not to get too disheartened by initial casting since Lee Yeon Hee, Go Ara and Shin Se Kyung have all recently shown that with experience and the right role actors can improve and surprise us. With that said the casting of Hyeri does put a damper on things for me. Hopefully the producers can bring out the same kind of performance they managed with Jung Eunji and Go Ara, but i have my doubts.

Don't like her acting but hey I'll be watching...at least the first few episodes to gauge whether it's good or not.

Man, after reading all the previous comments I'm *really* happy I've not see Hyeri in anything AND I love both of her main co-stars. This way, I can actually check it out and decide, upon actually viewing it, what to think of it.

I didn't like the Answer Me series enough to continue after 97 (and regardless of this Hyeri person being in it or not, I wouldn't be watching), but I would have loved to see Lee Yi-kyung with a role in this one.

I will definitely watch this for both Go Kyung Pyo and Park Bo Gum! Loved them in Cantabile! Even though I still have doubts about Hyeri (big, big doubts) but I'm willing to watch this one as long as the story intrigues me. I survived Blood after all despite the bad acting of the leads because of the plot, which I thought was quite interesting until they went downhill in the last few episodes. Here in 1988 there's only one of the leads with questionable acting skill, so I think I'll be able to watch this one just fine. I'll just have my fingers crossed for the plot to hold up.

I liked hyeri in seonam....until the script had to make excuses for her character's absences later in the show which I'm guessing is because she got too busy with her other activities which seems unprofessional

I'm so pissed off none of these leads are exciting me. Neither the boys and or girls. Like us girls have to actually swoon over the love interests and both look quite older. are they really that clueless. This is my favourite series ever and they're going to mess it all up. I saw hyeri with a part in a show and she was crap. What the heck were they thinking.
