hello
just this:

http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/best-summer-trips-2015/#/seongsan-ilchulbong-korea_90114_600x450.jpg

Jeju Island one of top 10 summer trips for 2015. haa

where from "drama destinations" would you most like to go?

ah I dunno what to tell you. I haven´t dared to watch "Smelly Girl" yet. I was just rewatching Angry Mom again and try to understand Teacher Noah a little better, and I sort of get it now. I was disinterested at first, but now I have become a fan of his. He never wavers and he is 100% true to himself. I am glad, cause I really didn´t want to be unfair towards him. Have you ever felt that you have treated some character unfairly or missed something about his appeal?

gotta go now I am being watched! shhh! I am not here!

Me too! My sis & I planned a trip to Seoul & Jeju a couple of yrs ago. We were a few months into our plans & BAM I get pregnant. Our trip dates would have put me at 35/36 weeks--big no no. The universe has since messed up all our subsequent attempts to set a new date. At this point
I feel like we may never make it over there. But at least I can enjoy the island through the Hong Sisters' new drama now.

I'm barely on ep6 of Angry Mom, but I can already see how Teacher Noah's character would be an easy one to just brush off and perhaps disregard. ...... But he's clearly the counter point to everyone else in the story.

Teacher Noah sees the "glass as always half-full", what with his trusting demeanor and total optimism----almost to a fault you could say.

But more than this, he's the character that represents what we, as human beings, should aspire to be....... if only society would let it happen. Sadly, there are too many dangers in the world.

TO THE ROOFTOP!!! Because apparently that's where lazy chaebols are hiding from moms who want them to be the company CEO.

Kidding aside, I'm kinda weird in that I've never been tempted to visit Jeju.

It's always Seoul for me. Or any of the farms/places visited by Family Outing. :D The old villages with halmeonis and a stream nearby or maybe a bamboo forest where you can catch chickens.

Regarding Jeju, I'm not sold on their beaches because most of the ones I see in kdramas are too rocky. When I see water, I want to SWIM in it! We already have lots of nice beaches here. So I'll probably want to visit SK for the food and the shops. (And Song Jae Rim.)

I am not a beach-going person, more of a wanderer and photo-taker. so it is fine with me if beaches are rocky, I love climbing on rocks and taking photos from every angle.
I just never found Jeju as appealing through dramas as from this short article. it seemed like just another island, but I didn´t know it has such fascinating geological heritage

I have been pondering a temple stay at some remote mountain monastery. I am reading "Meeting Mr Kim" which describes a woman wandering around traveling in South Korea visiting temples, and it has inspired me.

I think Seoul is too crowded for me. I want simple meals, hiking, gorgeous views, and time for meeting people.

Namiseom Island
Teddy Bear Museum
Ride the KTX from Seoul to Busan

Happy Friday Beanies! It’s been a crazy last few days and my internet at work has been down so I’m behind on a few shows, especially the newest ones. As always I will try and remedy that today and over the weekend…and maybe can come back and update:

Seonam Detectives Finally got myself to watch the last two episodes of this! I can’t really say that I liked this show, but I was happy to see it tackling so many “taboo” issues. I also mostly liked the main cast. I know the channel got into hot water for the kiss and something clichéd about promoting immoral things, but I’m glad at least one show had the guts to do it. Sometimes the rules feel very much like Hollywood’s old censorship board.

Missing Noir M It was killing me where I recognized the main girl in this week’s episode from but I still don’t know…anyone? I’m happy they’ve gone to single episode mysteries as it was killer for me to wait a week for part two. Also nice that they’re giving their characters some back stories. Also interesting to see how they’re starting to make those main characters interact. I always look forward each week to the new episode.

Hwajung I actually caught up to this one this week which is surprising. It took me forever to realize her buddy from the mines was also a 5urprise member (just like her leading man). That mini series I guess was good for something. This week actually felt a bit more fun to me, perhaps it’s the youthful cast that’s on now. I was also happy to see that the king has become much more clever even if he is also more cruel. I still think his progression doesn’t really flow that well but the actor is always so good that I don’t care.

Murphy’s Law of Love And so it begins. I’m glad at least that he seems still pretty devoted right now and that the preview shows there will still be some cute next week but…ugh, the angst is coming and I don’t want it.

Warm & Cozy I’ve only seen one episode of this but so far….honestly not much of an opinion. I really like a lot of the cameos, and smaller actors in this. I’m one of the few who hasn’t actually seen the leads in anything so I have no expectations. Yes, the first episode was a bit all over the place and mostly setup but I’ve seen that with so many shows that I’m willing to reserve judgement. I do want some food porn though please! (I’m sure it’s because I’m skipping Let’s Eat 2, but I feel like I’m missing out when the main character of this show is supposed to be an incredible chef and yet we haven’t seen his food).

In other worlds, I’m still annoyed that I don’t know where to get all of Orange Marmalade. My app only has up until a certain point and then adds more every week but I think there’s probably a lot more to do….and the show is starting!! I also showed my friend a clip of our Marmalade man because she’s a self-described “voicist” (she falls in love with people’s voices, and it definitely affects who she becomes a fan of). Even with my...

His voice is so awesome. I honestly saw him the first time on a Running Man episode and when he opened his mouth I was more in shock than the Running Man cast! I have never heard him sing...although I feel like he must since pretty much all Korean actors do.

I don't think you're watching School 2015 but on of the main characters is an idol (Sung Jae) and he was recently on the Masked Singer show and even though I've heard him sing with his group, I was totally thrown off by how low his singing voice is compared to what his speaking voice is.

He did a lot if sings on the show so I'm not sure this is the best example, but for anyone who is curious, here is one of the songs: http://youtu.be/ItcjYaoq6H0

That was killing me as well. I kind of think she looks like how Yu Aoi looked 10 or more years ago when she was a teenager, which is impossible because a) Yu Aoi is Japanese and I'm pretty sure she doesn't speak Korean and b) it's not currently 10 years ago.

Missing Noir M is one of the best crime dramas in months, or even years. Just wish it came more often than once a week.
"Warm & Cozy" - so far.. meh. Watched first 2 episodes, and so far it seems entirely predictable, with all the usual k-drama tropes. Will give it a couple more episodes, but not on my must watch list for sure.

I've honestly never watched a long Sageuk before so I don't have much to compare it to. We've just now gotten to all the main players (kids finally grew up). I'm not entirely sold on the pacing but I find the plot interesting and there were some things I personally haven't seen before...and I like seeing new historical things that I didn't know about. I like our main King although I don't think I'll ever see him as evil which I heard was the plan? His acting is excellent. I dunno, I need more to have a bigger opinion but I will say that for whatever reason I normally have a really hard time keeping myself in schedule with sageuks. I like them but they feel draining somehow. However, I've managed to keep up with this one and I'm still curious about quite a few things and also am not sure about where a lot if the plot lines are going to lead so I think that's an endorsement in and of itself.

Hope this friday finds you all in good health. I've hot the level of panic where motivation left all together. Thus not being able to do anything.

Gonna henna dye my hair today as well, which should be exciting.

Dramaland:
Hana moyu: finally more episodes. Yet not seen yet

Caught up on the lover. The last episode was.. Well not.. Quite my humour.

Required fields are marked *

Hey Manin! I hope the panic leaves you soon and you're able to get motivated again.

There's lots that is good in dramaland right now, but The Lover is not one of those dramas, imho. I want to check out Hana Moyu, but all my recent jdrama forays have been basically about rewatching stuff I like. (Hanzawa Naoki, aaaagh it's just too good)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Hana Moyu is great. Except then I googled the biographies of several characters and pretty much everyone dies before the even hit thirty (either being executed or from cholera). Damn! That's so depressing to look forward to... and so perplexing to think that these individuals were the ones that fought for a better Japan for only a handful of years yet left such a legacy.

Ex-girlfriend Club I want to watch this for Byun Yo-Han but I think the premise just doesn't work for me. The first two episodes just made me think that everyone just needs to GET A LIFE rather than being so hung up over a freaking ex! I just cannot relate. (SPOILERS) And am annoyed that the exes think they have any rights for a fictionalised story (you can't tell me that MS would write everything exactly as it was) and that the revelation of Soo-jin as the fourth ex came with putting her down as the ugly, unworthy girl (not glamorous, rich, with fab job, über-fashionable dressed like the rest of them) - I find that kind of humour very demeaning. And what's with making her the not-really girlfriend and/or the virginal girlfriend?

Not sure I will continue...

The Lover Been reduced to skip-watching for me, and will drop it. This show strikes me as trying so hard to be raunchy, but doing it a way a teenager that doesn't know what s/he is talking about would.

I agree with everything you said about the ex-club. On top of that, I also cannot relate to the female lead, as she is even more obsessed with and possessive of that jerk. And once I stopped caring for any of the characters, the show started to be rather amusing.

I feel the same about Ex-Girlfriend Club. I was SO excited for Song Ji Hyo and Byun Yo Han and while they are playing their parts well, the story is just....meh.

I expected more zippy and zany from the fun promos but the first episode felt a little flat to me and I was pretty much falling asleep in episode 2.

On a side note though, I am totally into Who Are You School 2015, which I had no anticipation for and watched out of curiosity.

I guess thats kdrama life for you.

Same for Who Are You School 2015... wasn't going to watch (because it felt too soon after School 2013 still and I wasn't familiar with any of the cast in a way that would make me want to watch). Then I tried it the other day and watched all 6 eps in one go! Mind, it has it's weaknesses too but that story I can relate to.

Ex-girlfriend Club are all people that don't seem real to me at all or individuals doings that make no sense to me (the debt scenario is another one of those things).

I think the only ones hung up on Mr Ex are the main character and his noona first love. The otehrs are hung up on their reputation. Dating sometimes implies you've had sex with some other person. Litte miss wannabe idol doesn't want that. This is korean fandom after all. The other doesn't want her fiance to find out that she also dated. He's a chaebol and he probably wants "purity." I think it's doing its job of playing with mores and the stories we tell (or allow to be told) about ourselves.

So in addition to being a story which will show us the process of one art becomign another, manwah to movie by way of famous writer who knows the tricks or nonfamous writer with high-minded ideals, we have subtle social commentary on real life versus drama life. I think the writer has done a good job so far and so far I have total trust in the themes being played with.

I just can't relate to them at all. It makes no difference to me whether they are hung up on the guy or their reputation (and if you are hung up about your reputation, why do you waltz into a room and kiss him on the mouth several times in front of four people you don't know at all???)

I also can't relate to people who have got time to have multiple get-togethers at random hours for something like this. If I were one of them and worried about the making-of of the film, I'd email or call first, or maybe meet the guy individually. But these people have a lot of time to spare... I mean, I don't know how it's going to continue, maybe they'll be more realistically involved in the film-making (the woman who is co-producing could be, maybe the actress will be cast in the film?)

sometimes it helps me to go to a different environment than usual to concentrate and find motivation. sometimes it helps when I kind of , and I know it is weird, mumble to myself while walking in the park (GOD it is weird, but it seriously does work). it is like the "productive me role play". I tell myself what I plan to do and imagine actually doing it and describe it out loud to myself.

Another Friday! Happy OT!

Still watching GIRL WHO CAN SEE SMELLS and all I can say is: that ending though!
So intense. Had me so on edge. Glad to see Chef Jae-hee finally getting his comeuppance (although I'm sure he has a few more tricks up his sleeve). *SPOILER AHEAD* I like that they've caught Chef Jae-hee in the act, but wouldn't it have been more prudent to set up officers outside the house as well as outside the tunnel (when they found it) instead of just relying on the four of them who were there (esp. considering that Cho-rim doesn't really count as an officer)? And did anyone find it just a little strange that Mu-gak & the other officer didn't pass out when they entered the white room in the midst of the poisonous gas!? Hmmm . . .

DIVORCE LAWYER IN LOVE: could this be it!? Are the OTP finally going to get together and stay together? Due to this only being episode 8 out of 20, I doubt it, but it's nice to fantasize about the cuteness to come instead of focusing on the upcoming antics we'll have to endure when the 2nd leads & the universe in general collude to break them apart. The good news is, if things get too frustrating, we can always re-watch that awesome courtroom scene again. I can't have been the only one swooning, can I?

THIEVERY: I know this comment is long enough already, but I have to vent a bit about the blog that has stolen my entire recap of Eps 7 and 8 (which I just posted yesterday) of DLIL. As a newbie blogger, I've read about content thieves & I hoped it wouldn't happen to me. But alas it has. I found my entire recap on kramarecap(dot)blogspot(dot)com. NOT COOL at all. Hopefully I can get them to take them down. It sucks to see all my hard work just swiped in an instant.

oh that theft. I was just reminiscing, since Eurovision will be next week, how when it was once held in Tallinn they wanted ideas for the "postcards" or clips and held a competition. The theme was fairy tale. and I sent some, then they said I did not get picked. But when I saw the clips, there were 7 of my ideas. I just let it go, but maybe I shouldn´t have... though I was just a 20 year old nobody.
the clips are here if you are interested
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G5Gj6m6N98

and my ideas were: kissing a frog and turning into one, three bears working in a puppet theater, ghosts in a nightclub, seto women (in folk costumes) taking silver from the bankomat and flying a carpet and thumbelina fairy tale connected with national mens choir (where you can see my dad in the clip :-)) not that the whole scenario was mine but the main point, the main idea of what happens. dah. oh, the laughing princess too.

now I have begun to think, could I find my written ideas in their archives? silly me, I did not copy them - that time I had no computer and we didnt have many copy machines in companies even. camera? well, my dads´black and white zenit but...

I think that type of thing happens a lot--when you submit ideas and things I believe they always cover their butts by including a relinquishment of rights provision in the terms of you agreeing to the submission. It all depends. At least you know your ideas were awesome enough to use--too bad you didn't get proper attribution.

Nighty night everyone! Or those in neighboring timezone, LOL.

Been watching the classic Thank You. I've yet to see the last episode, but so far it doesn't disappoint me. Watching this makes me realize it's been a long time since I watch a neatly written drama without outrageous plot (e.g: murderer, cops, etc) or Gong Hyo Jin in melo or Jang Hyuk in anything. It's simple, frank, yet it manages to touch all the soft spots in my heart. I don't know how many liter of tears I've shed. The romance is not the best, but who am I to kid when I got to see squishy little Bom on the screen?

Also watching Warm & Cozy, and my comments on it are mostly on the recap thread, so I won't talk much. I just hope it gets better.

Disappointed with TWGSS, and still haven't continued HITTG.

Hope you got a great week!

I'm not saying I loved this guy for 10+ years (it's not denial! it's not!), but I loved his family and they loved me, and when he got married two years ago, things got awkward for everyone and I've been making myself scarce because the dynamics shifted and I don't know where to place myself. Felt like an outsider all of a sudden, also felt demoted from being the heroine of my own drama to being a second female lead. ;)

Thanks for the comment and sharing,Den,ck10z and Pogo.Nice to know that I am not alone (i am not a freak,i have friends, and theyre getting sick of me telling this stuff over and over. They care, but not exactly understand how it feels like to be un my shoes).I guess real life is even more hilarious and dramatic than your kdrama drama.LOL.I dont wanna make it a 10year 1sided love for sure.Honestly, I have done the bitchy role of a second lead (it is embarassing!!)I think he knows, considering we work together. We were very close.
@Den,are you still.in touch with him and his family now?how long did it take for you to accept the fact that youre no longer part of the close circle of his family?
@ck10z,I have been there my friend. The FB stalking (not stalking!!!u know, hmm just checking really).Does that make you feel better, seeing his photos (and wife) now?and your families are best buddies. That must be hard.
Hope there will come a time when i can laugh it off and not getting stuck on wondering what could have been. I am planning to do what ck10z did.mine will be moving overseas or at the least to a different city.
Do you think it has something to do with women's (most) low self esteem, this one sided thing?or that we're too stubborn?
Also pogo,HUG.
I imagine us in a pochangmacha(is it correct?)having soju and all.

I did that after a 10yr 1 sided love. He used to call me daily. And then do what I did- K drama style. I moved overseas for my studies and never came back. Hahaha.

And the freaky comment came from the fact I just saw him on FB just before this. We are not friends on FB. Haven't seen him since that time 17 yrs ago. And his wife- who was his classmate- whom I also knew looks like her mother.

I am now leaving OT to still reel in shock at seeing him and how they look after so many years. Omg.

Our families were best buddies. And his brother was my classmate. That's why I suddenly saw his photo. They rarely post family shots and I am living overseas so haven't seen him since. Yikes. I was literally staring at him and his wife for like 10 min. And now will go ask his brother about whether they had kids. Last I heard they didn't have any. My god- and I used to love him?

So best not to let the guy know you like him. Makes for less awkward moments years from now. I've never quite recovered from him though. Sorry... to tell you this.

Quoting ck1Oz here:

I've been there and done exactly that. It's the only gracious thing to do if one does not want to come off looking like a clingy kdrama second lead in real life! But seriously, I sympathise with you.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today. ....... Finally getting some much-needed rain and light snow around here. It's somewhat rare to get this in May, but with an ongoing drought, we'll take what we can get.

So I finally made it to the local Korean supermarket, H Mart! I've been driving by it for years and I've always wanted to stop by, but I've never had the chance for one reason or another----usually, lack of time. ....... Sooooo many interesting things to see and purchase! I could've stayed in there for hours!! ....... What did I end up purchasing? Soju (two kinds!) and Korean Shingo pears. The pears were a small fortune, but they were huge, gorgeous and yummy. I still haven't tried the soju though. ....... Needless to say, I have to go back to that store!

Watched this week:

Girl Who Sees Smells - Still watching the first half-hour of the episodes only. Still really interesting to watch Namgoong Min in this type of villainous role.

Angry Mom - Really liking the way the story is unfolding and how, in spite of it being a story full of serious and painful topics, it has genuinely funny moments woven into it!

Wolf Hall - Great last episode with excellent acting all around. ....... The queen summarized things pretty well when she proclaimed, "Those who are made can very well be unmade."

Mr. Selfridge (Season 3) - At this stage of the game, you totally wish Mr. Selfridge wouldn't be so constantly behind the baddies. It just seems odd that, a businessperson of that stature, wouldn't have it dawn on him or her that there are enemies lurking on the sidelines.

That's it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I wish we had a korean supermarket. there is one shop that sells spices, vinegars etc, but that is not specifically korean. there is actually a korean restaurant on my way to supermarket, but I would feel weird going alone and I have no one to go with in Tallinn.

You should totally go to the Korean restaurant by yourself. I never have anyone to go with me to my local restaurant. When I first started going I stood out like a sore thumb, but I didn't care. Now the owner knows me & even if radish kimchi is not a part of the banchan that day, he always makes sure to bring out some for me. Let us know if you go!!

Hi all:

Dashing out to prayer so will make this short until later.

Grapevine: Grapevine taught me something very interesting that I hadn't realized. Or maybe I had known..or had simply forgotten. And its this: just because a person is ridiculous doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. This is a good thing to know because there are so many powerful ridiculous people in the world..which we ought to take more seriously. Trying not to hate CEO Han and Madame Choi but wow! And seriously.. In Sang, i'm disappointed in you as well.

Girl who smells: I can't help it... I love this drama but I laugh throughout each of the "suspenseful moments." Ah, writer-nim, what can i say about your "skillz"? Did they really drag this thoung out to 16 episodes? It's not really a hate-watch ..it's more of a WTF-watch.

Unfortunate Boyfriend: Very sweet. Kinda wish the silliness with who owns the company hadn't come in..but eh. It's just all around predictable and sweet. Second lead guy is creepy and i so wish our heroine had had the will power to reect rich and capable. Hope she doesn't hurt Mr Unfortunate too badly.

Ex-girlfriends club: Am in loooooooooooooove. Isn't our manwha hero like all the but sweetly cluelessly charming manipulative annoying boyfriends we had in college?

Should i watch Hwajeong or Dingbirok? I'm needing a sajeuk fix.

Watching one jdrama now..I'm Home. Not bad. Sweet and gently preachy as is its J-drama wont.

Waiting for Scholar who walks the night and gonna try Warm and Cozy to see if i like it.

Have a great weekend all.

It was never really uphill, alas. It hasn't lost our goodwill, i think. But it can't seriously be called suspenseful since the suspense is so comical. I mean.. rain suddenly pops up out of a clear blue sky at the perfectly wrong moment...THEN little girl says something at the perfectly right moment. Ay me, this drama. It'll always be a favorite.

I am not allowing myself to be disappointed in In Sang, yet, because I am holding out for a surprise instead of what looks to be a typical chaebol route. Please!

I just thought In Sang would be stronger. But, throughout the episode he allowed a distance in their relationship. He didn't share the will discussion with her. And he is insightful enough to know the games being played around him. He should've known how lonely Bom felt. Sooo good that the servants are there to make her feel part of a family.

Re; Grapevine;

I was not so surprised that In Sung is swayed and shocked with what his parents told him. Though his dad is very fond of Machiavelli's idea when it comes to his business, I think he has been installing Confucius's filial duties in their children very deeply. I have been there so I do know how difficult to decide to go against our parents while finding serious faults in them . For all those years, someone like In Sung was taught to be a filial son and he learned what is right and wrong( which ironically his parents never follow). He wanted to be the filial son but at one point he started seeing his parents with his own eyes but he was deeply in denial with what he saw in them. Now the true nature of his parents are revealed so openly in the most appalling manner,,, he is shocked yet he was too shocked to know how he can handle the truth. But I get a feeling that In Sung just decided to do something against them(His eyes in the end of the last eps! He is very angry.)

I remember that there is a scene where the main secretary was telling that In Sun'gs father has not inherited from his father,,, because there is a problem with his father's will. I wonder what is the problem and also wonder if this delay of execution of the will is somehow related to the list of In Sung's inheritance. In Sung should realize that even his parents were willing to show what and how much they are willing to give to In Sung, knowing how evil and self righteous they are, there is a great chance that they would not pass his inheritance so easily. He might have to wait to get it till they die or worse( like his father's case)! In Sung need to wake up!!

In-sang was never really forced to take a stand. Bom rightfully pointed out that, for him, the little rebellions mean nothing as they carry no risks for him. For her, the stakes are real (and not just for her, her whole family is at risk).

Finally, he HAS to think about what he really wants. I loved that when he was at Bom's house, he eyed the house with this cute expression: "Oh my god, I cannot end up in a place like this." Because suddenly this is becoming a very real option.

Re: the scene where In-sang looks around Bom's house. It might very well be true that he is thinking “Oh my god, I cannot end up in a place like this.” That's not the take away I got from the scene though. His actions throughout the series don't reflect this. He doesn't like or even respect his father both personally and professionally, pretends to be poor to woo the girl he likes, thinks his family home is too big and they should downsize. He gets some idea of the real work it takes to maintain it when he and his sister replace the staff during the strike.

CEO Han asks him to picture the small, shabby, impoverished Seo family home and to equate this home with what he thinks must be their small, shabby, impoverished family life. It's only the material that matters to the Hans. It's all about money and power - how to get it, how to keep it, how to prevent anyone else from having it. Then In-sang takes his wife and child back to the Seo home. He looks around and sees that it is small and shabby but then reflects on the life lived within.

The Seos are a happy family. They take pleasure in each other's company, have fun with each other as individuals and have real joy in their lives. Sure their circumstances might be difficult and money is always a concern but their lack of money isn't who they are. Bom's sister might be seeing a door shut on her future successful career but their father is concerned that Bom might be unhappy and abused in the Han home if the lawsuit continues. It's not the fact she's won the lottery but the fact she might suffer that is causing him pain.

I think In-sang is reflecting at this point on the fact that things don't make people happy because his own family is miserable. It's that people make people happy and Bom and his child will never live happily with the status quo in the Han household Divorce is the only answer. But his father's answer that divorce will put everything back to square one isn't necessarily In-sang's answer.

But I do think CEO Han is going to live to regret his decision to insist upon divorce. He has the papers in his desk. All it requires is two signatures and it's a done deal no-fault divorce. But what if one of the two people refuses to sign? The law will get involved and suddenly it won't be quite so simple. The Hans have manage to keep the law at bay by not sending Grandfather Han's will to probate. There has been no real scrutiny of the family's finances which have involved tax fraud, insider trading and other delightful and highly illegal things. So there is a problem. I think this will be In-sang himself because Bom doesn't have the resources to do this.

Not really. I actually thought it was a hilarious joke when he said something like "well, making breakfast is no big deal" and all these things. He still gets pampered all the way through the crisis and was visibly shaken.

When he went to Bom's house before, he was considerate of their situation. He behaved, well, following the principles of his father, in a way. There was never the outlook of living in these conditions for him.

In-sang's role until very recently was the harmless teen rebel. He disliked his parents for their fakeness, but that never stopped him from taking all "his" things (stuff, and education, and safety, etc) for granted.

He is not a despicable elitist by choice or philosophy, but he is used to being superior, he is used to being completely safe. I don't blame him for that at all, that's not something he had control over.

"It’s all about money and power – how to get it, how to keep it, how to prevent anyone else from having it."

In-sang starts to understand what that power means. One of the real stinging things he said was: You cannot help everyone, you cannot change everything, you have to choose how and where to help to make an impact. That's carbon copy Han philosophy right there.

"The Seos are a happy family. They take pleasure in each other’s company, have fun with each other as individuals and have real joy in their lives."

That's a challengable argument, I might say. Jeong-ho and Yeon-hee are united in their cause. They might hate each other, but they share the same values. The Seos are all over the place.

0

CEO Han is trusting in Bom's sensitivity and In Sang's filial responsibility and also the power of money to get the divorce. He's a wily old king who has ruled a long time and he knows human flaws. Bom and In Sang are up against a master. I actually found myself fearing CEO Han could win. The only thing that can save the day is some savvy from let field. Maybe from Teacher Park. But who can come up with savviness that CEO Han has never seen/known/experience?

Maybe love will win the day. CEO Han doesn't know the power of love. So who knows? Love might blind-side him.

Jon G, true democracy means everyone in the family will have different views. True democracy doesn't imply perfect unity. Quite the opposite. Fascism and perverse loyalty to one's class above family love and human decency is what is holding Hansong CEO and wifey together. I don't even know if they know if they love each other. Madame Choi doesn't understand what friendship is. And CEO's best "friend" is his sister. He has no one else to confide in. But loving friendships are not about investors and underlings sucking up to you. Lonely is the head that wears a crown.

Okay, it was not difficult to spot that my "happy != harmony" argument isn't very solid. If you care for solid. Which you don't if you are the Hans.

I had a similar discussion with my Chinese colleague and friend. She always scolds me because I call out my parents when I think they are wrong (they do the same with me) and we have long arguments, almost always without closure (on the phone, and she is working late). She hates her parents, but for her, family harmony is the most important thing, like, ever, even though it's not even skin deep.

I learned a lot from her. Some people don't want sincerity and honesty and a chance for happiness or some stuff. Some people just want harmony. And I am wrong to call that superficial.

0

@ Jon. And he learns making breakfast is a big deal especially in a house like that. Anybody would be visibly shaken. But he doesn't take the easy way out and join his parents in a fancy hotel to weather the storm. He continues to make breakfast even when they return.

I'm not sure I get what you mean by "There was never the outlook of living in these conditions for him." He's respectful of the Seos because he's a well brought up young man like Bom is respectful of the Hans because she's a well brought up young woman. Money and his father's principles really have nothing to do with it. Good manners have nothing to do with money. He's also participated whole-heartedly in the Seo family life. He's gotten drunk with Mr Seo and enjoyed his overnight stays. He's done things with them he's never been able to do with his own parents. I guess I'm a bit of an optimist but I don't see why to be suddenly confronted by the fact that he might have to - Shock! Horror! - live like the Seos is necessarily going to turn him into a compliant mass of obedient goo. This may happen, true, as we still have 8 episodes to go but I don't see why it has to happen.

In-sang is most definitely not an overprivileged elitist, I agree with you there. He hasn't liked or respected his father for a long time and I don't know if this is has ever been fully explained. What was the inciting incident here? But he was well aware enough of his privilege to realize he had to pretend to be a poor boy to win Bom. He'd been secretly dating her for months before she got pregnant with the connivance of his own sister. He knows that his very high rung on the ladder of society will most definitely hinder his ability to be with Bom because Bom won't accept it.

"You cannot help everyone, you cannot change everything, you have to choose how and where to help to make an impact. That’s carbon copy Han philosophy right there."

Agree that this is the Han family philosophy but with a few things left unsaid. The Hans help, change and try to make an impact only if it is to their own advantage. I think In-sang is smart enough to see this. I don't see In-sang as a rebel prince at all. Not like his sister who is a prime example of the rebel princess. She's giving her parents a lot of grief with the weight thing etc but she thinks her inherited apartment building is "cute" and that she should get more. But when the time comes, she's going to toe the line rather than lose her place in the pecking order. In-sang, by contrast, has not rebelled so overtly. He even has a very annoying nervous habit of sniffling in the first few episodes because he has internalized all his rebellion. It seems to me he doesn't want to rebel but rather he wants a way out and Bom is his way out. It's just that it is not going to work within the Han household.

The Hans are united in their cause and share the same values even though they hate each other. Hmmm. Lovely. The Seos are all over...

0

Gah! Got cut off! The Seos might seem to be all over the place and in this they are very much a typical married couple. They might not see eye to eye on everything. For one thing I suspect Bom's mother is the real brains of the family. But that doesn't change the fact they do have a real marriage, warts and all, rather than an alliance of two powerful families with shared values made flesh. Perhaps this is what In-sung really wants for himself, his wife and their child.

0

I think In Sang wants to change the world, like all rebellious good princes. But he needs power and power to change the world and if power is taken away from him, what good would that do? It's about how much he is willing to sacrifice (for himself or of his ideals) in the present for a future ideal.

0

LOL! You were very bold!

I'm also not surprised In Sang is hesitant. It would be totally naive of him to "just give up" the money/power for Seo Bom. We all want him to say "screw it, I lovey wife more" but reality is that bills still must be paid, he has no career (as yet), and his survival is 100% tied to his wealth. He has to think smarter. Yes, he needs to stand up for himself and teach his parents a lesson, but there are smarter ways to go about it than give it all up. It's not realistic.

I hate how Lawyer Han's secretary acts like she's above all the employees. She's a little too comfortable in her position, when reality is that she is just another secretary that can be easily fired. Plus, hello, she's a thief to boot!

Seo Bom's sister needs to jump in a lake. Can't she see her sister's suffering? All she sees is losing her new found position. Plus hate how she tried to disused her bf from continuing the case

I think this is why this series is so clever. The writer is, in essence, asking us to sit on that lovely leather couch placed in that beautiful house which oozes hereditary family wealth, status and power and then to imagine what we would do. Well many of us would say "give me the wealth, status and power please; I'll count the costs later." It's easy, as the tutor says, to be seduced and very hard to then be unseduced. In-sang and Bom are both highly intelligent and personable young people. There is no reason why they can't make their own way in life, pay their own bills and learn to balance a household budget. It's what most of us have to do in this world.

They may legally be adults but they are still very young. And without any higher educational qualifications (keep in mind, they haven't passed the bar exam yet, never mind training as lawyers) or work experience, their earning potential is limited at best and likely to be hobbled further by Attorney Han seeking to make them see the error of their ways.

and Bom's status as a single mother, if she left on her own with Jin-young, would make her virtually unemployable in many circles and companies in Korea.

I don't blame the kids for trying to be prudent as well as principled, since living on their own wouldn't be a matter as easy as just walking out of the house.

0

I agree it will be tough. I suspect I probably would cave against scary CEO Han and his power. But the divorce is pretty much a fait accompli at this point. She absolutely will not be able to return to the Han house at this point. They will not accept her or, if they do, will treat her as a servant. Witness In-sung's mother's disgusting treatment of her when the friends come by to visit. The paperwork is in the desk, it just needs two signatures.

So what will happen? Bom will return to her family probably with a modest amount of money and maybe the Hans will agree to finance her education if she agrees to live " "as if she is dead". An expression I never heard until I started to watch K-drama but it says it all. She will not get custody of her child. The Hans are simply too powerful for that and Korean law seems to be on their side here anyway. She's supposed to go away, stay away and In-sung is then to regard his brief fling with the lower classes as a youthful indiscretion soon to be forgotten as he takes his place at the apex of the Han family hierarchy. I suspect that is not going to happen.

But In-sung and Bom do have allies. There are people actively working to bring Hansong down, the company seems to be on increasingly shaky legal ground. Tax fraud, insider trading, conflict of interest, suppression of evidence, the hiding of off-shore accounts, the list of legal malfeasance goes on and on. The Han family trust is a mess! Secretary Yang's brother is the administrator and he has most definitely abused his fiduciary duty to rip the trust off. If this gets out, and it will if the divorce is contested, the first people to be witnesses for the prosecution will be Secretary Yang and her brother.

CEO han is always harping on about "The Prince". Well, he should take the time to reread it. Especially the part where the Prince is advised to not be afraid to get his hands dirty but, if at all possible, to get others to get their hands dirty and then take the benefit. By insisting on the divorce it's possible that CEO Han is starting the dirty work that will ultimately benefit other people and bring him down.

0

Isnt Secretary Yang CEO Han;s sister? Or am i misunderstanding something? Isn't some company money being squirreled away with knowledge of her big bro? Am i unclear about something?

So true about Seo Bom's sister. Good heavens! And when Jae Won said clearly and up front, "Drop your sister" Noori didn't come up with even a look of affront to put him in his place.

I might be wrong on this but I think Secretary Yang is not Ha's sister because she told him that she first met him when he was ? years old( I do not remember the exact his age of Han when she started working but I think he was 18 to 20 years old?)
I guess Han set up a paper company( where his name is not listed) by using Secretary Yang's bro's name. Those paper companies or kind of a trust are the tools that rich people use to stash their money.
Throughout conversation between lawyers or between madam's rich friends, there are many money related talks that we commoners have a hard time to understand!!

0

Ah! Thanks, Atz!

0

So true... and the whole bit about responsibility, especially to one's heritage. It's not as if i wanted In Sang to go all rebel but when he sat in the room during Hyun Soo's visit and allowed his mother to come into the conversation as if they wer visiting her... aaargh! In Sang could have stood up and said, "Mom, who are you to insult my wife in front of my friends?"

So the prince apparently owes it to the kingdom to be elitist.

What if a company( companies) that they are investing using In Sung's inheritance go belly up and what if real estates that he is going to inherit is something that actually his grandfather's( his father, CEO HAN, has not gotten his shares from his father). Papa Han lied to In Sung that In Sung would get all properties but in fact Papa Han is trying to get the real estates first. Oh, that would be sweet. then Hans would not have much material bribe to lure In Sung into their hands.

0

It's possible that the grandfather's stock left to In-sang is held in trust by Madame Choi, as his mother. She would then have the authority to take decisions over investment etc.

There was one suspense thingy that gave me shivers: The date of MG and CR in episode 13. It was way too long, way too happy and adorable for NOT being a harbinger of doom. I've been waiting for In Sang to grow up into his princely challenge of the king. But i didn't think i'd have to endure them being manipulated into marriage. I feared it and weirdly i think I got sucked into the weirdness that is CEO Han and Madame Choi. I was so busy pitying their solipsism and elitism and mocking their ridiculousness that I totally forgot that they represent the kind of privileged entitled people who do damage other peope's lives. Hey, remember, Kim Jung Un just executed his defence minister for falling asleep and disrespecting him. The supposed wounds of the privileged are dangerous for us normal folks.

: just because a person is ridiculous doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous.

Spot-on in every way. And I'd argue that Attorney Han and his wife (and their friends) are even more dangerous BECAUSE they are ridiculous. They have all this power but the mental and emotional maturity of five-year-olds, which makes it even worse for any rational adult trying to deal with them.

I've long said that the teenagers in this story were more mature than the adults, and we really got to see that in spades this week with Bom. I'm disappointed in In-sang too, but I'm glad the story tackles this clash between them even at the risk of their marriage. It's been the one thing that underpinned the entire drama, and to have it unravel is going to switch things around in ways I can't even imagine.

School 2015- As of this week my hope that Eun-byul is alive is fading fast. Assuming that Yi-an is the lead they've got a lot of work to do before I'll be happy with him being with Eun-bi.

My Unfortunate Boyfriend- I admit I'm confused about my feelings towards Hee-chul right now. See I hate him with a passion that burns brighter than the sun, but I don't know why. It's been implied that he's getting ready to do hateful things but he hasn't yet so why do I hate him so much already. On the flip side I find myself liking Jung Hye-mi more each week, ok sure she has a tendency to sabotage Ji-na when Hee-chul is involved but outside of that I kind of like her. I'm so confused.

Warm and Cozy- I can see that this is the kind of drama you either love, such as me, or hate, I don't see much room for middle ground here.

Girl Who Sees Smells- I haven't seen episode 14 yet so please no spoilers. After episode though I'm happy because our cute couple, the reason I'm still watching is back yay. I hope chef psycho doesn't kill Inspector Yeom that would be such a disservice to him and the story given how smart he's been so far.

Hey, I'm middle ground on that one. There are things I expected to dislike, others I'm surprised to like and overall it's a "not sure" so far.

Who are you
I somehow assumed that Eun-byul was dead for good. I also always assumed that Yi-an was second lead. I also assumed that KSH was a child actress with still many tings to learn. I was wrong about the last part at least ...

Haven't watched 14 either, but 13 was definitely interesting ...

<It’s been implied that he’s getting ready to do hateful things but he hasn’t yet so why do I hate him so much already.

He's already shown to be really possessive and controlling. Never lets Ji-na finish a sentence, if he lets her speak at all (that's how they have ended up dating). Says things to her like "I want you all for myself", sets up dates/meetings with her without asking if she's actually free etc.

Never mind that he repeatedly lies straight to the face of the heiress girl (not that I like her or anything but...), kisses her and is very knowingly two-timing – for his own benefit (connections with the heiress's family). That's all hateful in my book though it's his behaviour towards Ji-na that troubles me the most. Because it's all red flags that signal abuser. I don't think the drama will go to any extremes (e.g. physical abuse) but the signs of emotional abuse are already there. If you meet someone like that in real life... you run away really fast.

Good morning !

Warm & Cozy – kdrama is baaack! The Hong sisters dish out a good story that doesn’t drag at all but jumps right in with more than likable characters played by more than capable actors and actresses. (Ji Sub in the first episode? Why, thank you very much for that, Hong sisters!) Geon Woo is just an awesome king of guy who would be so much fun to hang with. Jung-Joo has so much inner strength to motivate herself, since she’s only got herself to rely on. How great is it to have someone believe in you without having to convince him! Their sunrise wish – adorable. (Which, btw, is a 180 degrees from the last fatal sunrise scene in Blood that I watched, thank goodness).
The mayor - clay underwear – ha!
Here ‘s a link to a Korean geographic spot on Jeju Island’s amazing female divers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adRSXrtKuz0

spoiler* Grapevine – this kdrama has turned a dark corner just like I thought it would, but I can’t let myself believe for that In Sang would join his parents’ side and go up against Bom for custody. I also don’t think In Sang is swayed just for the inheritance money; it’s more like he can hear reason in his father’s position since that is the family and environment he has grown up in, and his parents have cleverly (is weasel-y a word?) intertwined the inheritance in with other responsibilities of the coming-of-age son. As a privileged idealist, In Sang ultimately doesn’t understand a “working class” perspective/position. (Bom poignantly reminded him of that. She also put his father’s condition for the inheritance out there in a simple sentence – to divorce her or forgo the inheritance). To In Sang, saying his father isn’t wrong doesn’t mean that he thinks he is completely right. But, to Bom, that is what it means. If In Sang is an idealist, Bom is an absolutist. In their purest forms, the two don’t easily mix. If ever there was a couple I wanted to see work out, it is In Sang and Bom. Please tell me it can happen, kdramaland, don’t be too harsh. I don’t think I can take that.
The person who has the best handle on the situation is Bom’s mother. She saw all this coming, but she knows it is Bom’s tough decision in life. That is pretty much the highest form of respect.

EXO Next Door is EXO-cute. Nothing actually happens in the 14 minute web drama episodes, but as someone said, it’s really just blatant fan service. Yep. Stop by my website for some EXO doodle art and (very) short recaps.
The Lover – by episode 5, it’s stuck and I’m bored.

My Unfortunate Boyfriend – It really hurts my heart to see Tae Woon’s innocence taken advantage of, and worse – misunderstood. I am interested in finding out his full story, but it’s not a good sign that I already think this won’t be a memorable kdrama.

There is so much k-variety out there, I've become a KV junkie these days. Finished recapping Blood. it was a long but interesting process and I got a lot of love on my blog, :), which in itself is...

re: Grapevine, seeing Bom break this week finally drives it home just what an emotional tightrope she's been living on ever since she got in that taxi with In-sang. She's brilliant and adaptable and has done her best to win her in-laws' approval and gain a place in their world (and was even successful for a time), but she also makes a very handy scapegoat for her uncle's actions, or the actions of literally ANYONE who displeases the senior Hans - including their own children and staff.

And her only real supports in that precarious position were In-sang and to a lesser extent, Yi-ji. But she's the one paying the price for their rebellions, since In-sang is the one who brought up the labour unions' matter with his father against her advice. And also because, judging by Mom's look at In-sang and Bom in the study room, seeing them in a happy and loyal, healthy marriage probably makes her feel all the ways in which her own marriage fell short (husband thinking he's entitled to cheat, for starters).

And something about the way that inheritance conversation between In-sang and his dad was concealed from us makes me think Dad didn't just use the threat of money against In-sang......there's quite a high likelihood he might have threatened Yi-ji's inheritance too, if In-sang didn't fall in line. Because it doesn't make sense for In-sang to do a heel face turn on his principles and roll over so quietly if it was just money being held over his head.

I love Grapevine - partly because it avoids nearly all of the silly overused clichés almost entirely, and seems a lot more realistic than most. So far nothing has happened that does not happen in real life.

My main worry this week is what will In Song end up doing.

I have this feeling that Bom is just getting very tired of this whole fake household and is getting close to just dumping it all in favor of a real non-plastic life. I hope she comes out on top in the end, but I can sense a lot of frustration with her right now.

Hello, everyone! :)

So, I finally finished KMHM and I swear, if Jisung doesn't get an award from that, I'm gonna cry. He was super amazing in that drama.

Also, I talked my best friend into watching Healer, her first ever kdrama, and now she's hooked. She's asking for recommendations. But, I'm afraid to recommend anything because Healer set the bar so hight she might be disappointed. Any suggestions?

Also, I might be the only one who hasn't watched Miseang and I'm debating whether I should start that or The Girl Who Can See Smels. I guess the better question is, is the latter even worth it?

Thanks, and have a fab weekend you guys! <3

Here are my top 5 that I use to hook library patrons on k-dramas:

1. "Two Weeks" (Thriller featuring Lee Joon Ki as a guy falsely accused of murder. Well-written, tightly-plotted, fantastic acting.)

2. "Marriage, not Dating" (HI-LARIOUS romantic comedy with highly decorative actors.)

3. "Misaeng" (Really well written & acted.)

4. "Shut Up! Flower Boy Band" (Theme: "Corporate Rock Sucks")

5. "Vampire Prosecutor Season 2" (Vampire-Cop-Show Cheese w/a terrifying bad guy.)

If the person in question likes cop shows/scary stuff, then I'd add "Cheo Yong", "Ten" (s1 & s2), "Detectives in Trouble" (aka 'Crime Squad'), & "Possession" (aka 'Soul').

Happy Friday y'all!
I was planning to catch up on Angry Mom and Smelly Girl. But I found my crack drama and those will have to wait.

RUNNING MAN - I've reached the point of no return. I love this show and my love didn't lessen even if I've passed Joong Ki's(my motivation of starting) goodbye. Oh and seeing Kookie lose is so oddly satisfying.

TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS - I'm no fan of sageuks. I think I watched Dae Jang Geum but it didn't leave a mark and neither did the little I watched of Seon Deok and Empress Ki. Truthfully, I started with no idea of the story and only with my desire to watch Jang Hyuk in something. Joong Ki's a bonus. Heh. But I like what I've seen so far and it's such a feast in the eyes.

THE MASTER'S SUN - I thought that I was in the mood for melo so I was looking around for one, turns out I was wrong. And I suddenly wanted to watch Gong Hyo Jin again. So I picked it up. And I love it. Haven't felt this way since AM 1997(I only watched it recently). Hah. I'll rewatch Giant next time.

Tree with Deep Roots is indeed a great sageuk. Such a great cast - Song Joong Ki, Han Suk Kyu, Jang Hyuk - maybe with the exception of Shin Se Kyung, but she doesn't even play that major of a character anyway.

And quite creatively fused with real Korean history. I think it's sometimes overlooked amongst sageuks because it wasn't one of those epically long sageuks.

Both of these dramas weren't initially on my radar b/c I used to stay away from sageuks and I do NOT like the horror/gore genre at all.

Not sure why I decided to check out Tree With Deep Roots, but I found it deeply interesting & entertainingas well as intense. I have since grown to appreciate sageuks as much as I like trendies.

With Master's Sun, I know exactly why I watched it. On the end-if-year review everyone raved about it so I broke down & gave it a try. Loved it.

Enjoy!

I know I am late to the party, but the most fun I had all week was watching four episodes of the first season of Grandfathers over Flowers. I never watch reality shows, Korean or otherwise, but after I read the recap of the latest season and couldn't find it online to watch, I took a look at the first season and have been completely charmed, and not just because they were in Paris. I only wish there had been a few more of the black and white stills of the grandpas as young actors. What lovely gentlemen they are.

Is anyone watching Unkind Women? The finale was yesterday and left me with feelings I'd like to compare.

Mostly I was very satisfied with the show, outside of some loop-d-loops in the middle, and I was satisfied with much of the finale, although they left one central love puzzle unanswered. I'm so curious to know if I missed any clues or suggested resolution to that?

Spoilers

Since I was primarily watching Unkind Women for Song Jae Rim, I was severly disappointed that his romance was left completely open ended/unresolved. I'm not sure why the writer decided to end this romance in such an unsatisfactory manner. Unfortunately, not sure that he ever had more than 2 or 3 minutes of screen time in any episode. Oh well, perhaps his next drama will be better and he'll actually get an HEA (not counting his HEA in Nail Shop Paris).

I was also very disappointed with the supposed character growth of Hyun Sook. Her repeated physical abuse of her daughter's boyfriend (in the final 2 episodes no less) made her, IMO, no better than those who had bullied and abused her. Overall, this abusive behavior left a sour taste and confusion regarding the message that this drama was trying to convey regarding bullying and physical abuse. It seems that it was okay for Hyun Sook to be an abuser but not okay for her to be abused.

Was happy that Mo Ran survived, as I did enjoy her friendship/sisterhood with Soon Ok.

Overall, I found this drama to be just okay.

I also thought that the results of the cooking contest between Hyun Sook and Eun Shil were a complete cop-out by the writer. Further, I was never convinced that Eun Shil ever felt true remorse for her lying, thieving ways (she suffered from a massive case of “poor, pitiful me”). But then, I never found the redemption arc for either of this drama’s villains to be very convincing

Required fields are marked *

I was also disappointed in the Ma Ri and Roo Oh story line. It was really the only one I cared about by the end and it wasn't even resolved. A grown man leaving his girlfriend and his business to suddenly go overseas to "study." It felt like the writer just didn't care by the end and threw the storyline away for quick resolution.
I found myself doing a lot of scene skipping the last 4 episodes. Looking back I feel like by the end the series was the story of Hyun Sook and everyone else was just there as side characters. And considering how annoying and childish her character was it caused me to lose interest in the story as a whole.
But I too was happy that Mo Ran was ok in the end.

Required fields are marked *

The unresolved romance is a definite let down, but I might have been more disappointed if she had suddenly fallen for the older brother just before the end. If there hadn't been a skip through of years at the end I might have been more happy with a non-resolution, but that got my hopes up!

Ultimately the whole show is in the title. "Bad" characters don't become good, but have good aspects revealed, even if those aspects are just that they are loveable to someone who is likeable/"good." And "good" characters are not all good. No one is complete or without devious sides.

The cooking competition as a device did feel rushed, but allowed the same nature of love to be highlighted, as that which allowed the bond between the mother and Mo Ran.

The assistant, who I loathed all the way through, turned out to be a great stage, I thought, because she wasn't changed in any way but her facade broke down so dramatically that she was too pitiful to hate and the response of the mother made me love her even more.

Overall, I really like the way the drama thwarted expectations over and over again. And I love that all the characters started off as messy and "wrong" people and all ended up that way. I was totally charmed by romance/wedding that took place at the end, although coming from such a different culture it was hard to see the pre-wedding hoop jumping for family members who weren't even involved in their lives.

I think I was only tired toward the middle with lots of near-miss encounters and the characters felt a lot more like real people than most dramas. This is good or bad depending on tastes I guess.

Heard it Through the Grapevine is more or less consuming me this week - it's found its footing again after the affair plot, and managed to make a gripping, poignant set of episodes about literally the only thing I have managed to predict correctly about this drama - the parents' attack on Bom and In-sang's marriage.

If there's one thing I love most about Grapevine vs other Korean dramas, it's the utter unpredictability of how situations will be resolved. But this one, honestly, I saw it coming. Doesn't make it any less sad or moving, even if there's a really dark chuckle to be had about the fact that a pair of neo-sageuk power trippers in a marriage where the husband sees cheating as a royal right (and yes, I am talking about In-sang's parents) have banded together to dismantle a normal and non-dysfunctional relationship which is more of a true marriage than the senior Hans have ever had.

Actually, forget the royal family analogy, in the context of a modern world they're more like a tinpot dictatorship trying to force their household and everyone in it to behave in a way that's fifty years behind the times. (sounds pretty familiar........just look up North).

Also, Go Ah-sung outdid herself this episode, as did Lee Joon. More thoughts to follow after dinner...

Required fields are marked *

You make it sound as if the show is unpredictable by nature. I definitely don't feel that way. It's more like: I know what's supposed to be happening now, but they cannot really do that, can they?

About the overdue direct (by comparision) attack on Bom/In-sang, I fully agree. It was bound to happen, and that didn't take away anything from the emotional impact of the cynical joke it is.

What I didn't expect yet was In-sang's immediate faltering. I knew that this inherent conflict had to be addressed at some point, but for him to break right now when Bom is most vulnerable herself, that was cruel. And awesome. But mostly cruel.

(I slightly disagree about the acting, btw. I thought that it was the first time that I started to see the "strings" in Go Ah-sung's acting. It was the most challenging part, yes, but she was flawless so far. She's still fantastic.)

Required fields are marked *

I definitely don't mean that the show is chaotic unpredictable, because it isn't. But it doesn't follow the usual kdrama patterns of these kind of stories, because the tone of the show and the fact that the story is partly centred on two utterly terrible people does to some extent remove the element of knowing how things will turn out or wanting them to turn out a certain way for the protagonists' sake.

Even now I can't predict what's going to happen eight episodes later, which is when it all ends. Whether it's going to end in Attorney Han going to jail, or Hansong standing mightier than ever, or Bom's family finally letting the Hans have a piece of their mind (speaking of which, it's not often I can see the validity of both sides of an argument like this - I can understand Dad and Noo-ri not wanting to rock the boat and getting mad at the uncle for giving the Hans an excuse to mistreat Bom, while I can also see Bom's mother's outrage and her wish to pretty much have Hansong all go to hell).

And I agree that In-sang's caving to his father now is especially cruel, but I definitely think there is more that we don't know about exactly why he gave in to a threat this time, when he previously didn't seem that hung up on his money. He's naive, but pretty much the only things to shake him are threats to his loved ones. And I'm guessing Daddy Han, Father of the Year that he is, told In-sang that Yi-ji's inheritance was also contingent on Bom's departure from the house, not just In-sang's own.....among other things. There's something about the setup of the scene and the way he ordered Yi-ji to leave before he began talking to In-sang that makes me think this was the case.

0

Required fields are marked *

I cannot predict which of several possible courses it will definitely take either. It's not deterministic. But there are very few instances where a character makes a decision that I hadn't at some point envisioned him/her making.

The possible end-games you propose: I'd like to see various versions of the series playing out to each of them, to be honest. Now that we get to the point of closing in on the end-game, I'm a little bit frightened. I trust the writers that they will avoid the forced happy ending. But there are so many different stories to be told from the current point in the show.

Bom's family: Yes, I said it a few times, ever since their internal philosophical differences materialised, the show really delivered on that front (Bom's family had been sidelined in the first act). They all have completely different and contradictory world views, but none of them is invalid.

0

Required fields are marked *

And also, re: the renewed attack on Bom, I can see how she presented an easy target after the affair caused a major 'loss of face' to both Han parents. Her uncle suing his former employers was a convenient coincidence, but the senior Hans totally fail to realise their own responsibility for any of the events that led to the household staff going on strike (which was long overdue, and honestly awesome while it lasted).

You get Yeon-hee feeling stung and undignified for the fact that her husband is a clumsy and unrepentant would-be adulterer, and then deciding to implement household behaviour protocols to drag them all the way back to 'the good old days' so she and Attorney Han can feel better about themselves. The staff push back and so do their own kids, and Bom becomes the convenient scapegoat not only because of her uncle but because the very fact of her having a happy, supportive and loving marriage with In-sang when she and her own husband can't manage more than a joint government of sorts, is an affront to the Hans.

She represents their loss of control, starting from the day she gave birth to the baby - no wonder a pair of control freaks like that want her gone. But it still amazes me just how petty and childish they are, and how that fact makes them even more dangerous because of the power they have in their world. The same goes for Attorney Han's "other woman" and the investment club friends, barring the owner of the bar. Childish but dangerous.

I think my main disappointment on the last two episodes was how somehow the Emperor/Empress managed to once again refuse to face reality and once again blame everything on Bom - because she "is not one of us" - "us" meaning royalty. They are so isolated and insulated from real people that you just want to beat them on the head until the "get it" - but knowing that they probably never will.

I have this feeling that things will really start blowing up big time very soon - the wild card right now is what will In Song decide to do. I think that Bom is getting near the point of just chucking the whole thing and going back to her own family in disgust with the antics of In Song's.

Well, OF COURSE they would do that. And, technically, it's mostly Yeon-hee who blames Bom, Jeong-ho sees her as a variable that needs to be eliminated.

Your last sentence is also the reason why you shouldn't be too disappointed: There was no other realistic outcome at this point.

the thing is, they have so much money and power that they get to keep behaving that childishly without any consequences. Literally the only thing that they care about is keeping up appearances.

I feel really bad for Bom and disappointed in In-sang BUT I can also understand why he might take the realistic view - he loves her, but if he leaves the family with her and Jin-young, he has no power and no access to his own money, and his parents are 100 percent certain to make not only his and Bom's lives miserable, but they'll also take it out on Bom's family. He wants to try and be strategic about it/accept it for now and do something later, but Bom is past breaking point by then.

Han is just way to powerful. I liked the kind of desperate air in the last episodes, we had this great alliance of rebell forces, and they were all split up and most of them neutralised by very little effort on Han's side.

Han (and, worse: his wife, because she doesn't have an excuse) can behave like that because there are zero consequences for their behaviour.

Bom and In-sang realises that they only can "beat" them if they bring down Hansong. And that is something that In-sang cannot do.

0

I am not so sure that Han cannot be broken. There is still that backstory going on with the illegal wire transfers etc., so things could still get ugly for Han really fast. On the other hand, they seem to be really good at dividing their enemies.

I think the blowup might come from some unexpected source, but at this point I cannot begin to guess where.

0

@windsun

Of course they could be brought down, but at what costs? That would make a lot of people unemployed and poor (like, for example, most of the servants), or put them right in jail (like, for example, In-sang).

This is one of the reasons why I don't see it happening: The rebels are not (or will not stay) united in the course to bring down Han, because most of them would personally suffer from it. There are only very few in the opposition who are driven by revenge or principles. Most of them can be convinced that bringing down Han is against their own interest.

So ... I saw this picture and thought to myself ... wow ... that's like a situation found in 50% of all K-Dramas ...

That painting also reminds me of the sage words by J.Geils band, "You love her but she loves him
And he loves somebody else you just can't win
And so it goes till the day you die
This thing they call love it's gonna make you cry

Happy Friday everyone!

Am watching Smelly Girl - Love, Love LOVE our OTP! Love the villain too. Just its a little puzzling watching the cops just watching him walk off. Almost as if the writers are saying "No, NO! not yet! its not that time in the plot yet to catch the villain!!" As i type this I'm getting a visual of writer-nim waving his hands emphatically along with said dialogue.

Warm and Cozy - i was reading the thread on the recap page for episode 1. Not sure i get the the criticism though. Yes, the opening doesn't suck you in immediately but i thought it was nicely set up. Episode 2 though - i watched the first 15 min and i thought to myself "I'm so in for this!" I absolutely love GW and JJ. GW is too sweet for words. He's a bit air headed about practical things, but his hearts in the right place. He doesnt analyse things too much. So he's lacks a bit of depth in his personality but he feels and therefore he does. JJ i think is as much of a dreamer & happy go lucky as GW, just that life has never given her an opportunity to develop that side of her. I can just imagine the confession scene to come though, he all earnest and possibly bewildered by these "feelings" and she would be all "fine i'll love you, because you offered and now you cant take it back". I think it will be epic.

Anyone else watching Lets Eat 2? The plots's not groundbreaking but makes for a sweet watch. Though the eating scenes are a bit lackluster in this season. Anyone else think Lee Soo Kyung ate more.... errrm ....prettily than the current female lead?

I've been watching Let's Eat 2, and I think I enjoy the plot and characters even more than Season 1.

and I agree that Seo Hyun-jin doesn't eat as deliciously as Lee Soo-kyung, but that makes sense for a character who suffers from disordered eating (even if she doesn't think of it that way) and thinks of food mainly as something that can make her fat.

Seo Hyun Jin's eating is fine with me . She eats with guilt at first then she immerse herself into eating. While I was watching Lee Soo Kyung eating like a pig, I always wondered how she does not care if she gain weight due to her gust eating habit.
I like scenes where Seo Hyun Jin and Yoon Do Joon argue with how to eat( ie putting an egg in ramen). They are passionate about how foods are cooked and eaten.

I also like the storyline as well.

I love LE2 so much that I'm skimming the OT just to see what others are saying about it! I feel that this drama has one of the best writing, and the characters are just lovely to watch. It's the only drama I'm watching from start to finish right now, and I've started tons recently without finishing.

So I've been exercising recently because I want to lose weight especially in my thigh, arm fat, and belly. Then I started jogging after that, I've been lifting a 6 pounds dumbbell, and after watching on the youtube I read a comment about my muscle will become bulk because of the fat, something like that. Is this true? Do I need to jog more to lose fat and then tone my muscles? Or can I do it at the same time?
~
Btw, I'm thankful to School 2015, that I didn't suffer that much looking for a good drama after Angry Mom. :)) and I'm really liking Ex-girlfriend Club, Byun yo han just keeps me reminding him of han suk yeol. :)

No no and no.

The common misconception women have is "weights will make you bulky". First of all, it's nearly impossible to get big and bulky like men because we simply lack enough testosterone. The body building women you see out there usually radically alter their diet and do some extreme heavy lifting to achieve those competition bodies.

6 pound dumbbells will do nothing to make you bulky. If anything, it'll help you look more tone, you'll gain muscle which helps burn more calories in a resting state. You'll feel stronger and lose more inches off your body.

My current work-out schedule is 4 days of weight lifting/strength training and 2 days of only cardio if that helps =)

Thank you so so much for help because I've searching for internet everything but every article I read have different ways that I don't know what I'll believe in and that's why I ended asking here in open thread. I only have 5 pound dumbbell but I think it will still work out :)

Thank you again for answering my question and I thinking about doing it the same with your schedule or I'll make my cardio to 3 days. :D

Hello everyone!
I'm currently watching 3 dramas:

a) School 2015: BRILLIANT. Great acting, amazing writing. Never saw Sungjae before, but he is my favorite on this. Love his character.

b) Heard It Through the Grapevine: Started to watch because everyone says a lot of good things about it. Watched episode one yesterday. I liked it, but I still don't have an opinion about it. I really liked Lee Joon in Gap Dong and Go Ah Sung in Elegant Lies.

c) EXO Next Door: Nothing to say about it, but it isn't bad. Sehun is great being funny.

Incheon Gal is a pretty cute character, though.

These days, I watch more variety show than drama. anyone else watch JTBC CRIME SCENE? The season 2 is definitely one of the best var show I've ever watch. They upgrade the props, the cast is solid and know how to play without ignoring the variety part, and the case just getting more complicated.
And I stumble over a new var show from KBS, KING OF MASK SINGER. Usually I never really like watching a talent show, but this one simply just amazing. It's nice to see those talented idol getting recognize for their amazing voive and singing skill.

For drama, currently watching Ex Girlfriend Club and it's way better than what I imagined. SJH and BYH got a good chemistry and the four ex-gf's story is definitely interesting. I was expecting a lot of laugh and akward-embarassing situation, but it turn out to also has a lot of heart.

I'm watching Crime Scene S2!! I'm in uni and exams are in a month's time so its the only thing I'm watching now. I started watching for Hani but the show's really won me over. So entertaining and intellectually stimulating. I can never guess the culprit haha.

Mask King is great too!! Love how those idols that are not typically known for their vocals get a chance to shine. It's on MBC btw :)

Warm and Cozy - Love it! So relaxing and soothing, like a calming balm, after a hard day at the lab. Can't wait for the next episode. But kindda hard to see the mayor guy as the second lead. He's got such a comical face, it doesn't feel like it might be threatening our OTP at all.

Falling for Innocence - All love has left for Joon Hee. But love love love how sweet Min Ho is with Soon Jung. And something about his boyish voice that is just smexy!

The Lover - Tried to watch it for the cute bromance couple but humor too crude for my liking.

Murphy's law of Love - Adorable! Cute! Still on episode 7 though. Somehow can't make myself watch the party at the end.

Does that happen to anyone? Even if you love the drama, you can't make yourself watch to the end..You keep putting it off for some reason?

Hello beanies!

I'm nursing a terrible migraine... sobs sobs.. but I think I can still watch Warm and Cozy... I love the show already. Don't know if its the magic of Jeju-do or YYS.

I dropped Smelly Girl.. but will pick it up again soon. I don't know why I do this to almost all of Yoochun's dramas, except Sungkyungkwan Scandal.

I need a sageuk dose too... Maybe I'll wait for the flying blade thingy... dunno if I'll watch anything vampirey after my craziness with Twilight.

Happy weekend!

At this point, I couldn't care less about Bang Myeong Soo (might change in the future), but I'd just watch it for the shenanigans of those four ladies together.

Aw, man. I totally missed Friday! (It's been a rough week at work - I have noodle arms from toting & unpacking.)

My highlight was that for Mother's Day, my husband got me a dna test - my grandfather was adopted, and no one in the family who knew would EVER talk about his birth mother. My grandfather was browner than the rest of the family, and had vaguely Asian features, so I've wanted to do a dna test for years now to find out if I'm right. My sample's at the lab & being processed, & I'm all a-flutter, as they say. :)

What I'm watching (not much, really)

Let's Eat 2: There is still not enough eating. And not enough talking about eating. Also, unmarried people should take this useful lesson from it: TALK to your boyfriend.

Missing Noir M: Is it weird to say I can't wait for this show to be over? Not because I'm not enjoying it, but so I can buy it for the library (and also marathon it.) SO GOOD.

But have you noticed? Three actors from Blood have been on it! One of the patients, the security head, & the vampire intern. ::closes eyes & wishes for Kwon Hyun Sang to have an appearance::

The Lover: I'm kind of getting tired of the low-brow humor, but I'm still invested in the gay couple, so I guess I'm going to keep watching.

No real k-drama moment this week, I suppose. Alas.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me the name of this drama:

So there are two male leads and a female lead. Somehow one of the male leads (Male X) ends up in a mountain road with the female lead and something happens which forces them to get out of the car, and stay beside it.

As Male Y is coming up the mountain road, he sees Male X and the female lead kissing or something and all I can remember is a disappointed face.

It's not much but please help me beanies! :(
