Winter Sonata gets sequel 13 years later
by girlfriday
Just when you think you’ve seen everything under the sun being made and remade (and recycled and rehashed) for television, there’s news that dramaland is going back in time to 2002 to revive one of its most iconic Hallyu hits, Winter Sonata. Have we officially run out of ideas, people? A sequel called Winter Sonata 2 is reportedly in the works at Pan Entertainment, and the original creative team is getting involved. I know that I shouldn’t be surprised anymore when MBC tries to remake Dae Jang Geum every year and Full House Take 2 happened, but sometimes I just want to call an intervention and tell them to leave well enough alone.
Winter Sonata aired on KBS in 2002, as the second installment of PD Yoon Suk-ho’s Season Drama series — the others included Autumn Fairytale, Summer Scent, and Spring Waltz — and catapulted lead actors Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo to megastardom. It’s one of dramaland’s classics, with every cliche in the book before it became a cliche: faux-dead first loves with amnesia, birth secrets, terminal illness, the works.
There’s no arguing that it was a sensation in its time, but I wonder how you update a drama 13 years later and give it a fresh spin when the nature of your original source material is dated because everyone’s already paid homage to your story in a thousand ways.
PD Yoon Suk-ho is aboard as the creative director in a producer’s capacity, while Winter Sonata’s original writing team Yoon Eun-kyung and Kim Eun-hee (Prime Minister and I, My Fair Lady, Snow Queen, Sweet 18, Summer Scent, and others) will be penning the script. A director isn’t attached to the project yet.
The story synopsis is due out next month, so until then we won’t really know how faithful a remake it’ll be, with new actors playing the same characters in the same story (this has Bad Idea written all over it), a sequel that picks up after the original (how is this possible?), or a loose remake with a vaguely similar setup (like Full House Take 2). The last option seems the least risky, since you could get a new cast of fresh faces in a melodrama about star-crossed first loves and just call it Winter Sonata 2. Just don’t pull a My Sassy Girl 2 on me, or we will have words.

HOW CAN BLIND Bae Yong-joon survive for a whole 16 (or 18 or 20) episodes?? Is this "That Winter, The Wind Blows" Male Version?
Or am I remembering the ENDING of a different Winter Sonata??? (Is this a SEQUEL or REMAKE?)
But if this will cast a different actor, I really CAN SENSE bad outcome afterall. But we'll see. Because I saw a 10-year gap sequel, and it turned about aaaaamazing.
[Hong Kong drama 'Triumph in the Skies' Season 1 aired in 2003, and its success was REALLY, I MEAN REALLY dazzling and remarkable. It's like their Dae Jang Geum or Stairway to Heaven. When the producers announced 'Triumph in the Skies 2' to be aired in 2013 (10 years after) there were many naysayers. Really many. But they filmed and aired the drama... And it turned out to be a MEGA-HIT, and was widely considered better than Season 1. It was a major shocker.]
But let's go back to Winter Sonata... "WINTER SONATA 2" is really quite a dull and really upsetting decision. It's one of my firsts, and I don't want it tampered in any way. Here's wishing it won't happen. Just give me a Bae Yong-joon goodie, I'm fine with that KBS.

Honestly, in my opinion, Triumph in the Skies 2 was NOT better than Season 1.... I think tastes have just changed (or have always been like that actually) and people just care about the star studded cast.......... the plot itself was so ..........
Really haven't seen any remake that's done better than the original ._.
Not sure how well this is gonna do, since I feel like this plot has probably been reused so many times that people just think its typical kdrama cliche. It was good in its time, but ... now? idk

Urgh! One of the most overrated dramas ever gets remade! I'm not happy!
"Full House 2" was such a flop. I wanted to erase it from my memory.
Why can't they just focus on making manga adaptations?
I'm still waiting for Kdrama versions of "MARS", "Lovely Complex" and so many others!

I totally agree! I recently rewatched the anime, and it's such a funny and touching coming of age story that hasn't become dated at all with the years. Plus the original is set in Osaka and they have whatever the j-version of saturi is, so they could set it in Busan and I would swoon with joy. Because cocky teenage boys with Busan saturi = my kryptonite.

I feel like Im Siwan is too serious for the role of Otani, who is loud, athletic, and kind of a prankster/class clown. I was thinking more someone like that short kid from Busan that was in Shut Up Flower Boy Band, though I haven't seen him in anything since. He was good in SUFBB though.

I would love a Korean Version of Fruits Basket, but I would like them to change some of the aspects of the story. I like the premise, a girl moves in to live with 3 guys after her mom dies and discover they have a curse where they turn into the animals of the zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex and she sets herself to break it. I would like to see a live action version of Kyo, maybe even take out the orange hair.

Japan never made a live-action version of Fruits Basket and I doubt very much Korea would do it before Japan. As popular as it is, must be because it would be very difficult to work with animals. They could use special effects but they would probably end up with very crappy ones, given the budget available.

No way, the visual effects teams of dramas would never be able to find a way to do the talking animals well. I don't want to see any live action versions of it, in Japanese or Korean.
The anime was lovely though, and the manga is my all-time favourite.

*************spoilers!****************
I just wonder if the Korean viewers could handle the rape issue as nicely as the TW did, also dealing with delicate issues such as suicide & mental illness. If dealt with in the wrong way, it would just destroy the core of the material. Anyways, I'd love to see this done in a Korean version. If I haven't already made my point. Lol. ?

I watched it once and I thought it was ok. I think Winter Sonata and Dae Jang Geum spread the hallyu wave like wild fire overseas. My whole family started watching K dramas after Winter Sonata and totally hooks on Dae Jang Geum. Hey, what if this is actually a continuation of the original, just 13 years later when the characters will be middle-age or later?
The production could be targeting the geriatric age group. They'll just cast all the senior participants from Grandpas Over Flowers and Grandmas Over Flowers. And, of course, there is Lee Duk Hwa, who seems to be in every single drama, regardless of bit part or a lead. (I'm getting confused as to whether he is the good guy or the bad in each drama.)
I may be too pessimistic, but sequels do not work out well. Mainly, because the original story has been completely told, finished, done. It's over! LOL

In place of ruining the classics or other shows with their sequels they should consider to make more contests for talented writers and give chances to fresh blood with good scripts,i for one i'm glad MBC took a step into it and gave a chance to new writers(i hope they are) with Angry Mom...i'm sure they are many talented young artists out there than can bring good scripts and bring a somewhat fresh into dramaland...in place of that the can't let go of their sequel obsession thinking a crappy new script can enjoy the same glory as the classic while ruining as well, also not thinking the context in what that drama that was famous was released...(how many of the glorious one would now bring big digits?) ,a classic is that for a reason and should be left untouched

Having said that, I am not exactly itching for a sequel. Most sequels never live up to its predecessor. Jury's out on this one for me. We shall see!

Winter Sonata was my first kdrama ever, so of course it has a special meaning, because it made me interested in other dramas which is definitely a enrichment.
It would be interesting to see something similar, but I don't have a opinion until there is more information.
The animated version was good, so maybe this one will be ok, too? (It actually lead me to the life action drama).

This drama was PAIN. I dedicated hours to it just to get dumbfounded in the end, when the incest was suggested I literally closed the window and never thought about finishing it EVER!
The only good thing about Winter Sonata were its two main leads. Can't they reunite BYJ and CJW instead?

Have Korean channels run out of idea what to film? This is a total turn off. WS was a sensation at the time because there was no other drama in Asia like that. Now we have seen all the cliches, this definitely does not excite me. I hope they throw the idea in the bin.

I want them to cast Yunho, Suzy, Changmin and Hyeri! With Seo Lee-sook or Lee Hyo-choon as the mother from hell! If they're going for absurd, they should do it all the way.

I have ideas, but I doubt anyone would ever give them a chance...tried to watch Winter Sonata, but could only stomach 17 episodes before I fast forwarded through the rest just to see how it ends. First k-drama I've watched was Full House.

Winter Sonata is my all-time favorite! It doesn't need a sequel. They should just leave it alone.

Winter Sonata was pure brilliance. But I still think a sequel would be meaningless. I guess the big 3 agencies have it pretty rough these days and would do anything to break the 15-20 rating record.
Oh well...I am still hoping for a sequel to Inspiring Generation! It sooo needs one. It wasn't that masterpiece of a drama but it surely needs a sequel. I could totally see that!
