Girl Who Sees Smells: Episode 8
by LollyPip
One step forward and two steps back for Jae-hee, as the cops get close and he starts to make mistakes. Mu-gak and Cho-rim get no closer to solving the serial murders, but they still manage to get closer in other ways, though it’s unclear what effect this could have on their incredible teamwork.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Mu-gak lies bleeding on the ground at the storage building, but thank goodness a security guard finds him and calls an ambulance. He’s wheeled into surgery, with Lieutenant Yeom there to monitor the situation. She answers his phone when Cho-rim calls, worried that he didn’t show up to meet her, and tells Cho-rim what’s happened.
Cho-rim makes it to the hospital just as Mu-gak is settled into a room after his surgery, and she pretty much loses it when she sees him lying unconscious. Yeom leads her into the hall to calm down, and tells her that Mu-gak lost a lot of blood, but he managed to say that he saw the murderer’s face before he lost consciousness.
The rest of the team arrive, but Yeom says they’ll have to wait until Mu-gak wakes up to find out who it was that he saw. Taking charge, she sends Detectives Ki and Yeh to talk to the security guard at the storage building, and has Kang brief all his contacts in case someone may know something.
The guys ask to see Mu-gak first, which is so sweet, but Yeom is in full Business Mode and says they can see him when he wakes up. Aww, they slump out of there disappointed not to see their friend, and Kang is especially worried that Mu-gak will be okay. Such a big turnaround for him, considering how much he used to hate Mu-gak!
Ki and Yeh watch the CCTV video at the storage building, frustrated that Mu-gak managed to get himself stabbed in a blind spot. They yell at the security guard for not doing his job, and letting their partner get hurt on his watch.
Back at home, Jae-hee cleans up after his night’s bloody work and studies Baek-kyung’s books — the ones titled “Golden Fish” and “Lonely Man” — wondering what message the doctor was trying to send to him. Later at the restaurant he notices that Cho-rim is distracted, and feigns surprise to hear Mu-gak was injured and is in the hospital.
Not realizing she’s talking to the murderer in question, Cho-rim reveals that Mu-gak said he saw his attacker’s face. She tells Jae-hee that he didn’t say who it was, but that they’re waiting for him to regain consciousness to find out. The wheels in Jae-hee’s sick mind start to spin, as he realizes he needs to silence Mu-gak before he can wake up.
The detectives stand around Mu-gak’s bed and wonder what he was doing at Baek-kyung’s storage unit, but their guesses are way off, and it’s Lieutenant Yeom who figures out that Baek-kyung must have discovered something about the murders. It explains why the Barcode Killer broke his pattern of only one or two victims a year, and his death means that Mu-gak is the only witness alive (that they know of).
Detective Yeh talks to Mu-gak in case he can hear them, since people can sometimes hear things around them when in comas. Kang fusses at him but upon closer inspection, decides that it does seem as if Mu-gak is listening. Yeom says the doctors declared his surgery a success, and that Mu-gak will probably wake up in two or three days. She sends the guys home to rest, saying that she’ll stay to watch over him.
Jae-hee packs up some lunches to take to the detectives at the hospital, asking Cho-rim to go with him to visit Mu-gak. Clever — this way he gets to assess how many cops are watching over his potential victim, and look like the nice guy. He casually asks if Mu-gak has woken up yet, secretly pleased to hear that he hasn’t.
When they deliver the lunch boxes, Jae-hee takes advantage of the detectives’ hunger to go into Mu-gak’s room alone. He approaches the bed where Mu-gak is still unconscious, and reaches into his jacket for… something. But before he can do anything, Lieutenant Yeom enters the room.
Yeom is clearly suspicious, as she makes a point to mention that two of Jae-hee’s closest acquaintances were both murdered by the same serial killer. With narrowed eyes, she even notes that usually, victim’s friends and family tend to avoid the cops, yet Jae-hee seems to be actively seeking them out.
Cho-rim visits Ae-ri at the coffee shop where she’s apparently gotten her old job back, engaging in some mopey PPL (but now I kinda want that charger) and obsessively checking her phone for updates. Ae-ri brings her a drink which Cho-rim can instantly tell from the visible scent is actually soju and not coffee, and she drinks it gratefully.
Dressed in a doctor’s coat, mask, and glasses, Jae-hee strides through the hospital halls as if he belongs there. He approaches Mu-gak’s room, and we see that Lieutenant Yeom is lying in wait with her gun cocked and ready… and Mu-gak is conscious! He feigns sleep but stealthily palms his own gun under his blanket, as Jae-hee quietly approaches the bed.
From another room, the rest of the detective team (dressed as patients) hear a noise like a gunshot and come running — and find a young clown dressed like a doctor, delivering a sort of singing telegram and scared out of his mind with five guns pointed at his head. They ask who hired him, but he says he was hired over the phone and of course, the number that called him is turned off now.
We see Jae-hee dispose of yet another phone, and a short flashback reveals that his walk through the hospital clued him in that the detectives were planning a trap for him. That seems sloppy, to sit in the room next door to Mu-gak’s and wave your guns around. Free and clear yet again, Jae-hee drives home with a self-satisfied smirk on his face.
Mu-gak apologizes to Yeom for blowing their chance, but Yeom says he hasn’t lost — it’s now 1:1. The murderer gets a point because he now knows they don’t really know his face, and the cops get a point because they know the killer is near, since he got their “leaked’ information so quickly.
Cho-rim takes Mu-gak for a walk in his wheelchair the next day, scoffing that she knew he was faking the coma all along. He teases that she sure sounded pretty upset, and Cho-rim grimaces when she remembers her hysterical crying over his bed. Hee. Mu-gak adorably tries to get her to admit she was sad, and she does allow that she was scared at how dangerous his job can be.
Cho-rim lets go of Mu-gak’s chair to check her phone, accidentally releasing him at the top of a hill and having to chase his runaway wheelchair as he screams. HAHAHA~gasp~, that’s the best thing ever. He gripes that she’s more dangerous than the killer, and she gives him a shove the rest of the way down the hill. I was wrong, THAT was the best thing ever.
Mu-gak is released to rest at home, and he orders Cho-rim around the grocery store buying supplies to make an old recipe of his mother’s. He’s having so much fun sending her back and forth, she whines that he’s so controlling that people will think she’s his girlfriend, and Mu-gak is just all, “Yep.” When Cho-rim objects to the idea, he sends her on an extra lap around the store for no reason. Hooray for the return of Petty Mu-gak!
Both of them take a moment to primp before Cho-rim gets to Mu-gak’s place, and as she’s cooking, Mu-gak watches with a look in his eyes that proves he’s completely smitten. SWOON. When they sit to eat Mu-gak declares the food delicious, though Cho-rim frowns at him — why is he being so flattering when he can’t even taste?
Mu-gak says that his mother used to cook this when he was sick, and tells Cho-rim that even though he can’t taste it, he feels energized. Cho-rim is motivated to open up a bit, and tells Mu-gak about her missing memory and how she only remembers the last three years.
She says she doesn’t remember her parents, and that when she sees pictures of them, she doesn’t really feel a connection. She thinks that even though her head may not remember, just like how Mu-gak’s heart remembers his mother’s cooking, wouldn’t her heart remember them?
Mu-gak asks why she’s not trying to recover her memory, and she says that her father doesn’t like to talk about the accident. Thinking about it gives her headaches and frustrates her, so she decided to let it go. Mu-gak sweetly reassures her that everything will fall into place eventually.
Cho-rim notices a bit of sauce on Mu-gak’s lip and reaches out to wipe it, and her face so close to his changes the mood. Gently Mu-gak takes Cho-rim’s hand, and leans closer… but Cho-rim starts to back away. Mu-gak isn’t about to let that happen, and he pulls her in by the hand and kisses her.
… and kisses her.
And kisses her.
Whoa, that is one epic kiss. But suddenly Mu-gak flinches and grabs his wounded side — ohmygod, did he just feel a stab of pain? He barely gets a chance to register what happened when Cho-rim nervously backs away and leaves. But once outside his door, Cho-rim touches her lips and smiles.
Detective Ki receives a package from his girlfriend Elena Vashilivnashivanova, which turns out to be a set of nesting dolls painted to look like him. Cute. Detective Yeh tells Ki that they’ll have the CCTV footage from the fishing area, where Baek-kyung’s car was left for two days, in time for their meeting the next day.
At the meeting, Yeom briefs the men on Mu-gak’s partial description of his attacker, so they now know at least his height and body type. From the clown and the hired driver, they know he’s got a soft voice and a Seoul accent, and they estimate him to be in his late-20s to mid-30s. Unfortunately this is way too vague, so they turn to the CCTV footage for more clues.
Of course they don’t see Baek-kyung’s car on the video feed, unaware that it was driven there in the hold of a large truck. Yeh remembers that it was the same with Ma-ri’s car, that it wasn’t on the CCTV video being driven to the spot where it was abandoned.
Detective Ki comes in carrying his nesting dolls as if he’s discovered something important, and shows everyone how they work. He says that if the smallest doll was Baek-kyung’s car, all that’s needed is a slightly larger car that it would fit into, and it could be moved without any evidence. They watch the video again, and there it is — the truck carrying Baek-kyung’s car, though they can’t see the driver’s face clearly.
Lieutenant Yeom and Mu-gak attend Baek-kyung’s funeral, paying their respects to his father. As they leave, Jae-hee walks right past them until Mu-gak speaks up. Turns out Jae-hee’s the one footing the bill for the funeral, which seems to make Mu-gak and Yeom (even more) suspicious.
They wonder why he didn’t seem to recognize them even though he looked Yeom right in the eyes, but they assume he’s just unhappy that they suspect him. Mu-gak wonders again what it was that Baek-kyung wanted to tell him, and Yeom says it couldn’t be so simple as just protesting his innocence.
They’re also curious why he went all the way to Jeju to check the fisherman couple’s daughter’s medical records, when she’s supposedly dead. Yeom thinks possibly he saw Choi Eun-seol alive (since she’s suspected all along that she wasn’t really dead), and they head back to the station to talk to former-detective Oh.
Oh isn’t at all happy to see them, but he pauses to hear that there’s been another Barcode murder, and out of the usual pattern. Mu-gak introduces himself as the brother of the Choi Eun-seol who was murdered in the real witness’s place, and says that he wants to meet the other Choi Eun-seol.
But Oh sticks to his story, and insists that the Choi Eun-seol whose parents were murdered never woke up from her accident, and that he only retired from the force because he was tired of being a cop. Mu-gak doesn’t buy it for a second and asks why he’s hiding the girl, but it gets him nowhere.
Jae-hee checks his tie, then pushes the mirror aside to reveal a hidden passage to his secret library. He contemplates the books from Baek-kyung’s clue again, still not seeing a connection, but notes that one of the books is the 5th in the series. He turns around and the wall behind him slides aside, revealing the white room where he keeps his victims before killing them.
Baek-kyung sits in the room writing in a blank book, but after a few seconds he fades away — it’s just Jae-hee’s memory of his latest victim. He flips open Baek-kyung’s book, the one he’d been writing in, and stops at page 5 where Baek-kyung had written about a patient who’d been grateful for saving his life.
For a long moment Jae-hee sees nothing of note, but then his eyes widen as he realizes that if he reads the lines top to bottom, the first character of each line spell out, “The witness…” Things start to snap into place and Jae-hee picks up the other book, which is 47th in it’s series. He turns Baek-kyung’s book to page 47, and reading top to bottom, sees the word, “…is alive.” The witness is alive.
Jae-hee convinces Baek-kyung’s father to let him back into the storage unit, and he looks around for more information about the witness. He finds Cho-rim’s medical file and notices that it was recorded a few days after he thought he’d killed her, proving Baek-kyung’s clue to be truth. He takes a photo of her x-rays, for as-yet-unknown reasons.
Ae-ri visits Cho-rim at home and asks after Mu-gak, but Cho-rim hasn’t heard from him “after what happened.” Ae-ri immediately knows they kissed, and is furious that Mu-gak kissed her friend then hasn’t contacted her since. She’s all, “Break up! Oh right, you never dated,” and Cho-rim kicks her out, pfft.
Still highly suspicious, Mu-gak follows former-detective Oh home, managing to stay unseen though Oh seems to sense something. He loses Oh when he runs into Cho-rim near their home, and he quickly invites her out to dinner to cover for being in the neighborhood. She says she already promised to eat with her dad, and grumbles that his phone must be broken. Mu-gak hears her subtext and apologizes, just saying he’s been busy.
Cho-rim gets home to find Oh packing for an out-of-town job, which seems to be a common occurrence. He asks if she still hasn’t remembered anything from before her accident, but Cho-rim says she still gets headaches when she tries.
Looking for more information, Jae-hee takes out Cho-rim’s real parents’ books they wrote while he held them captive, finding Cho-rim’s old school nametag tucked into her mother’s book. He mutters that he knows he killed Choi Eun-seol in the emergency room and turns his attention back to the book, but he’s interrupted by a call.
It’s his producer, calling to ask what he’ll cook on his show the next day, and Jae-hee says he wants to make something simple as he flips through Cho-rim’s mother’s book. He decides on seaweed soup with urchin and abalone shells, when he reads that it was one of Choi Eun-seol’s favorite foods as a child. The shells were her mother’s own addition, making the soup unique.
Cho-rim is going to head home when it’s time to start filming the cooking show, but Jae-hee reminds her that she promised to help him and orders her to come to the shooting. He says that he finds her smart and attractive, and asks her to introduce his dishes during the show. Cho-rim demurely declines, but Jae-hee tells her to come and watch anyway, and maybe she’ll change her mind later.
During the show he explains that leaving the abalone shells in the seaweed soup adds to the ocean-like umami taste of the dish, and Cho-rim watches intently. After the filming she asks what happens to the food he cooks, and he tells her to take it home if she likes.
She runs home with the soup to find Mu-gak waiting for her, and he’s pleased that she brought the soup even though he can’t taste it. He reminds her it’s all about the feeling the food brings, but when she offers it to him to take home and eat, he gives her the cutest hangdog expression. He slumps a bit and pitifully clutches his side, reminding her in a sad voice that he’s still recovering, so she invites him in to have some at her place.
She says he has to leave right after eating, though, and Mu-gak is disappointed he doesn’t get any rice. Okay, she concedes to rice, then he has to leave. But then he says he’ll need some water, and digestion time… but he shuts up and follows obediently when Cho-rim just rolls her eyes at him and goes inside. So adorable.
Cho-rim lays out the food while Mu-gak goes around touching her stuff (how are you so cute?!), and when they sit to eat Mu-gak does his usual thing of complimenting the food even though he can’t taste it. But Cho-rim takes one sip and freezes, and her eyes well up with tears. Mu-gak notices she’s just sitting there, tears in her eyes and a stunned, searching look on her face, and asks what’s wrong.
Cho-rim starts to cry in earnest, though she seems confused, and can only say, “This… this taste… I know it.” Mu-gak rushes around the table to sit next to her, and asks if she’s remembering something. Cho-rim shakes her head No, and she doesn’t know why she’s crying, either. But suddenly she realizes, “I remember a person’s face.”
COMMENTS
Now we’re getting somewhere. I like the advancements in the story in this week’s episodes, which feel well-paced and natural and not too rushed. I do worry a bit that we’re this close to Cho-rim getting her memory back, and the police are also getting very close to figuring out who the Barcode Killer is, when we’re only at the halfway point. I don’t normally wish for plot advancement to slow down, but in this case I think there’s still a lot of story to tell and I trust that there’s a reason things seem to be moving quickly this week.
Jae-hee is getting a little sloppy, which I hope means that he’ll make some crucial mistake soon — though it’s entirely possible that he already has. Not only has he broken his pattern and killed a victim (Baek-kyung) out of order, but he’s now offed two of his closest acquaintances, and Yeom is onto him. At the very least, it’s clear she finds him highly suspicious. Anyone would find it suspect that two of a serial murderer’s victims just happen to be the same man’s girlfriend and best friend. Even in the absence of any other evidence, just that piece of information alone is pretty likely to put him at the top of the suspect list.
And it’s not the first time — he already broken his pattern once before by killing Mu-gak’s sister (I’m assuming, now that we’ve seen his MO, that he’s acting alone and it was Jae-hee who killed her. I’m also assuming that his face-blindness is the reason why he killed the wrong girl), and now he’s impulsively stabbed Mu-gak when he got too close for comfort. I believe his plan in the hospital, before Yeom interrupted, was to kill Mu-gak quickly — though that would have been stupid since only five people knew he’d gone in there alone at that moment. He’s starting to let his control slip, and I’m just waiting for the final mistake that gets him caught.
Hat’s off one more time to the writing, which constantly impresses me with the way seemingly random, meaningless things can become major plot points within an episode or two. A small example is Elena Vashilivnashivanova’s (that name makes me giggle every time) nesting dolls, which at first are just a cute moment for a side character. But a few minutes later, it’s the thing that cracks a mystery wide open. There are so many instances of this in this show, and I’m surprised every single time. Of course the latest one is Baek-kyung’s riddle, which seemed to be just a raving man losing his mind as he realized he wasn’t going to make it out of that room alive. But it did turn out to have a meaning, and led Jae-hee to the realization that he’s not nearly as safe as he thinks, and the girl he thought he’d disposed of years ago is still alive. Why Baek-kyung would want Jae-hee to know that, and why he chose to frame it as a riddle instead of just saying, “The witness is alive,” I have no idea. But I have full faith that there’s a reason, and I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the clue wasn’t ultimately meant for Jae-hee, but for Mu-gak. Since that’s what he was meeting Mu-gak to tell him that night at the church, I believe Baek-kyung simply found another, though much more roundabout, way to let Mu-gak know that Cho-rim is the witness.
The only thing left to talk about is that kiss, but honestly? Analyzing it would ruin the magic. It was tender, and romantic, and perfect. That is all.

Thank you for the recap, LollyPip! Another ep I loved. We finally had a kiss that one of people (in the OTP) initiated. YAY!!!! I loved that MG went after what he wanted, especially since he already knew how CR feels about him. And that noise I heard (that interrupted the kiss), does that mean that MG can feel pain now? I was not sure whether it was him feeling pain, or some of his stitches breaking.
There was so much cuteness in this ep.: MG and CR at the hospital, and him milking the fact that she was sad over him “being in a coma,” (so, were you sad?), her paying him back (and scaring him, hahaha), them shopping together via teleconferencing (awww…), him checking himself in the mirror before she came back (and her doing the same), her opening up about not remembering her parents and anything that happened prior to three years ago (and him listening), the kiss (of course), and also the ending, when MG played up his convalescence time to have CR invite him over, so they could eat together. Man, who could refuse those sad puppy eyes? And this is part of why some of us are lining up to order a MG. I also loved it when she waved her knife (when she was cooking), and said “go rest!” and he was all, “OK!” and sat there, like the good little boy that he is. Awwwww… And before that, the way he was looking at her *Sigh* Show, please stay good till the end.
And YAY?! CR remembered the taste of the Jeju Island soup? Does that mean she will be in more danger now? MG please make sure you protect her. It was so moving to see her mother write the recipe of that soup, and what it meant for CR. Hum… Let’s see how things unfold next week.

Hello mine,
About this, "And thank you to you too Ivoire for your comment. I’ve always enjoy reading your comments and I love each scene that you wrote." You are very welcome, and thank you for your compliment. That just made my day (and it is still very early in my part of the world :-) ) This ep. was pure goodness in many ways, even with Chef in it. I was not going to let him spoil (for me) how much I love this ep. Like you, I replayed many of these scenes many times. I really love MG and CR together, how they just talk with each other, like when they were eating at his place, and when he was doing small talk while she was getting the food ready. That is what couples do!!!!!! He is SOOOOO her boyfriend! :-)
I also loved how concerned MG became when he saw CR cry, and being all emotional. I loved that he jumped out of his chair, and immediately went to her side. He is such a caring guy.
Also, the scene at the end, when MG was waiting for CR? So " I am waiting for my girlfriend" attitude. And I seriously love their banter, every time it happens (3 times at least in this ep. alone: at the hospital, when she was shopping, and when he saw her at night at her place). That scene outside her home, priceless. The way MG looked at CR when she wanted him to take the soup home? Oh my!!!! There are certain things that MG and PYC should not do, and biting their lower lip while giving you a sad puppy dog look is one of them, *Sigh* Yeah guys, don't do that. That was one of the cutest things. And then, when he was kind of arguing about how long he would have to stay b/c he had to have rice, and water, and watch TV, etc... and then simply said, "Okay!" when she walked inside and he followed her like an obedient puppy, so adorable! Their chemistry is so good! And the writing for their scenes is so good, so far.
And that scene on the stairs? I love how CR is doing all these things for MG, and he is (cutely) ordering her around, and then he simply basks in having her home with him, while he is getting better. And I loved that he told her that he "was getting re-energized" and she had a lot to do with it. I also loved how much his colleagues actually do care for him, especially since they did not want to have anything to do with him, at the beginning of the drama. They have all come a long way. They are like a family now.
I am still not sure about what to make of JH’s interest in CR. We know he doesn’t know (yet) that she is CES, and I am wondering if he would choose his next victim a year in advance. I don’t like CR being around him, though for the sake of the plot, I see why it is necessary. I just question his motives, as they are not clear (yet). He is going to be very surprised when he finds out that she is CES, and that she has been around him this whole time.
And about this, "And did you noticed that Mugak is slowly behaving like he used to be? He is more playful now, and of course happier with Chorim" I had not noticed, but...

I think for now JH is interested with CR just to get inside info about the police since he knew CR is close to MG. And really, CR is just a really nice girl that like to help people. So,he might just want to take advantage of that

Hi @Ivorie and @mine, about the "“And did you noticed that Mugak is slowly behaving like he used to be? He is more playful now, and of course happier with Chorim”" comment.
I dunno if anyone has noticed this but for me, the cutest (and most telling) demonstration of this was the semi-squeeing MG was doing on the bed while on the Videocall. Which is something I've seen happen a lot, (even done myself) when on call with someone you like...

@ Niyati,
MG did a semi-squee while he was on the bed? I will have to rewatch that scene. He seemed happy to talk to her (very happy), but you might be right. I will have to check on that.
And about this, "Which is something I’ve seen happen a lot, (even done myself) when on call with someone you like…" I love your honesty :-)

@ mine,
About this, "And MG biting his lower lip with that look is just soooooo adorable." Yes, it was very adorable! I replayed that scene many times. And it is not that it was only adorable, it was also the fact that his face in that scene, seemed to say "surely, you are not thinking of sending poor little me, who is recovering from surgery home alone to heat up that food, and eat alone, right? You would not be that cruel and that inhumane, right?" And to prove my point, he proceeded to make his case, AND make demands: he wanted rice, and then water, and then rest for a while while watching TV, etc... If that is not a boyfriend behavior, what is, really?
So I really loved what his eyes and body language said, BEFORE he even opened his mouth, b/c I saw all of that. And that was also why I thought it was adorable. MG is good at milking it (or trying to) when he interacts with CR if it will serve him. I can't blame him for trying. If it works, why not? :-)
And I totally agree with this, "i want more loving looks like the one on the stair too..sigh.." Yes, I would welcome more of those :-)
I am being a little dramatic in my squee of the swoon worthy moments, b/c I think I could resist a MG being adorable (in real life), if I have to. But honestly, why try? :-) Besides, squeeing at adorable scenes is part of the fun for me when watching Kdramas.
I also loved Ae-ri in this ep. She is quick on the uptake, quickly realizing that CR and MG had kissed, and then hilariously telling her to break up with him, and then "Oh wait, you have to date 1st." Ouch! Did you really need to say that Ae-ri? rubbing salt in her wound, are you?

I enjoy reading your comments, the details, and I always ended up agreeing with what you say, haha.
Especially agree with this;
"There are certain things that MG and PYC should not do, and biting their lower lip while giving you a sad puppy dog look is one of them"
Boys, you heard @Ivoire loud and clear, don't ever do that again, ok? Have mercy.

@ Neutral Hi! (or Hi again?!)
I am SO glad you are getting so much enjoyment from my posts :-) As I told @ LollyPip yesterday, it makes it worth the time I spend writing them. And by the length of some of my posts, you can imagine how much time it takes me. I really love details, when I am spoken to, or when I speak or write to someone. That is how I usually know that I understood something, when I can talk about the details. I also love that you always end up agreeing with me, I guess we see a lot the same things? :-)
And yes, PYC and MG should have mercy on me, b/c honestly, the cute does get to me, even in real life (sometimes). It hasn't killed me yet, thank goodness! (you know that expression we often see written "I am going to die from the cute!"), but yeah, it can work on me. I will tell you a funny story if I may. I was spending time at some friends, and one of their friend needed someone to watch their daughter (she was about 5 or 6), and their 14 months old boy. They asked me if I could do it (my friends have their own children, and they work during the day. I was on vacation) b/c they know that I have many, many, many years of experience with children and they trust me. So I said "yes!"
I got to that family's home, and things went fine. I talked with the mom while she was getting dinner ready, and she told me what I needed to know about her children (the mom wanted to go to a concert, and her husband was working a night shift). Things went well that evening, UNTIL I had to put their son to bed. So I got him ready for bed, read him a bedtime story put on some soft baby music, and then put him in his crib. As I was getting ready to leave, I turned around to look at him and make sure he was OK. He was sitting on his bed, but then when he saw that I was looking at him, he got up, tilted his head, and gave me these sad puppy eyes, as if he was saying, "like seriously?! You are going to leave me here alone?" I kid you not. And he has gorgeous blue eyes, and dimples. So I went back, picked him up, held him while I was singing to him (I love to sing, by the way). I gave him a hug, and then I put him back in his crib.
As I was leaving, same thing happened. I sighed, and I picked him up again, gave him a kiss on the cheek while telling him he was too cute, read another story, and then I put him to bed. 3rd time (same sad puppy eyes), I was like, "I am out of here," and I left. He was fine, b/c I didn't hear anything through the baby monitor until his dad came back. He was also the kind of toddler who would follow you all over the house. I loved playing with him. When his dad asked me how everything went, I said "fine! Except it was hard to put your son to bed, b/c he is so darn cute!" The dad laughed and he said, "yeah, I know! He has that effect on women, LOL!" That family really has good children though. So as you can see, it can be hard for me to resist the cute, from the right person, or right toddler :-)

Indeed Ivore, so much cuteness in one episode :D
The scenes at the hospital, the videocon shopping and the meal later were too adorable. Of course the kiss was the perfect way to finish it, and it was not disappointing, on the contrary it was melt-worthy and perfect for these two.

Hey Appelsin!
YES!!!! A big yes to all that you said :-) I couldn't agree with you more :-) I also do love the side relationships in the show, like the way MG's colleagues rallied around him. I loved that the writer is also making the side characters shine once in a while, like what he did with Det. Ki and the dolls. That was good!
On a side note, I would like to thank @ LollyPip for the "umami" link. I looked at the page, and it is loaded with info. I appreciate things like that. I plan on reading more on that page later, and I love that it has recipes from different parts of the world, which I am curious about trying. I will start with the French ones. I love cooking and trying new recipes, so finding out about that page is an added bonus. The French recipes bring back memories of my years in France, and I am very curious about trying the recipes that I briefly looked at. And eventually trying the ones from other countries. I really love all the side benefits we get from simply loving and watching Kdramas: learning about a new language (at least for me), all that culture, seeing what parts of Korea looks like, etc... Thank you again, @ LollyPip for contributing to me getting more educated about many things.
I am still concerned about JH, b/c he still seems to have the upper hand. That stunt he pulled at the hospital? That was cold. However, I am glad that Lt. Yeom is on to him, even though she has no evidence yet. And Ae-ri continues to be the good friend that she is, bringing soju to her friend, to give her a boost, and encourage her.
I have a language question: was the man JH was talking to at the funeral home, Dr. Chun's father, or his uncle? I read a translation (sub) that said he was his uncle. I was just curious about that.
Also, I was not happy to see CR so sad at the end of the ep., however I was glad to see that sth is happening to her, that will hopefully move things (for her) in the right direction. I feel that there might be some setbacks ahead (and some angst maybe?), for our couple, and their investigation of the Barcode Murders. They have 8 more epis. to fill, sigh!

Just wanna share an observation about that noise you mentioned when Mugak broke off from the kiss. I think it was actually caused by the fork dropping on the table.
If you guys look at the behind the scene photo that SBS released, Mugak was holding onto a fork (his left hand) the whole time. (Yes he was holding on to his fork the whole time he held and kissed Chorim hahaha. Mugak loves his food)
I replayed the part when he pulled back his left hand to his wound a lot of times. If u look carefully, you'll notice that the fork had dropped on the table and was still vibrating

@ MonkeySky,
Oh thank you for clarifying what that noise was for me, I was not sure what it was. I want to rewatch that scene b/c now I am wondering if I heard that noise before the fork fell on the table, or when the fork actually fell on the table. You could be right though. I just thought it might have been a sound effect to let us know that his stitches might have broken? ( I could be wrong though).
And I have seen that SBS scene photo (with the fork) you are mentioning, and I did clearly see MG holding the fork, but I didn't realize (or think) that it might have been the sound of the fork falling. And now that you said that the fork was still vibrating (on the table), I believe you (not that I doubted you, really). I will rewatch that scene. Thank you again.

Yes, it does look like he dropped his fork (Mu-gak sure loves his food! lol) because he felt a sudden pain around his wound :) (btw, great observation; the fork was still vibrating, hahaha). I guess his senses are slowly coming back to him, well at least the sense to feel pain and the scene where while brushing his teeth, he pulls up his shirt to check on his wound and him going to the doctor immediately after, pretty much confirms this.

I don't know! I just know that I'm actually flinching together with Mu-gak, I can almost feel his pain, it feels so real (good execution again).
I'm normally just so-so with kissing scenes in KDramas, but oh wow~ this one is good! It's so tastefully done, really impressive, do you feel the love? I do, love is in the air.
*sigh* Mu-gak alone is already so tempting, let alone a Mu-gak who knows how to kiss a girl.
Hurry up, have you check where we can buy Mu-gaks for ourselves? hahaha

@ Neutral,
So good to read from you again :-) And you can be so funny!!!! Yeah, like I said (I think yesterday), I did watch the ep. raw, and when I heard that sound, it felt like it could it be some of his stitches breaking, and I think he also had somewhat of a surprised look on his face. Again, I was not sure about what ( the surprised look) was about: that he heard something on his side, that he felt pain (if he did. Maybe that will be addressed next week, him starting to feel things again), or was he surprised that they had actually (finally) kissed? So yeah, I was not sure.
I don't squee at every Kdrama kiss either. I do tend to pay attention to the story (lead up to the kiss), the execution of said kiss, and the body language of the actor and actress during the kiss (and that says a lot). And yes, this one was a pretty good one. "Do I feel the love?" Yes I do, though as we know, CR had been quite obvious from almost the beginning, and I think we could pinpoint when she started having feelings for him (or at least when they showed). MG has been doing a lot of caring things for her, though I don't think he had been thinking about how he felt about her (and remember that line about "she is just my friend?" Well I guess those feelings grew, huh?) So yeah, I guess we can say that by now, love is in the air. I wonder how they (MG and CR) will handle that, that new development between them.
I might be in the minority, however I felt that MG was more into the kiss than CR, especially looking at their body language during the whole scene. And I am not sure if it was written that way, if the actors wanted to act it that way, or if it actually says sth about PYC and SSK, and how they felt about the kissing scene (during the kiss). I do know that MG had to "lean towards" CR, and initiate the kiss. However I think there is more to it than that. CR seems to hold back a little, and again I am not sure if this is CR (being that way) or SSK, or both. Hum...
That is how I see it, and that is also what I sense from the scene. I would like to see it in slow motion, the whole scene. I would get more out of it. It is always interesting to me, how much one can "see" or sense (or how much I personally do), when I put my feelings aside (the squee), and focus on the body language in a scene or on TV, during a kiss scene or any other scene, really. I usually get some kind of information out of it. And that could just be me, however I have often been right, about what I saw or sensed. It has made me wonder what I should think about MG and CR, and what I should think about PYC and SSK. Sometimes I mute the sound, and I rewatch the scene. It can be surprising how much more one can notice that way.

You know what I love about this scene? I mean, aside from it being beautifully and naturally executed? It's (like you said and I agree) the story that leads to the kiss (both of them opening up to each other a little about their own little secret) and the message after, that Mu-gak is slowly gaining back his sense to feel pain.

@ Neutral,
About this, "*sigh* Mu-gak alone is already so tempting, let alone a Mu-gak who knows how to kiss a girl." I agree! :-) And if we go by what MG's sister implied, it might have been his 1st kiss! Not bad, for a 1st time kiss. Well done, MG!
AHA! About our MGs orders: they just received them, and they said that they are waiting a little bit longer, to see how much of a demand they get. Also, the MGs will be custom-made, meaning that one could add special qualities to your personal MG. You love to travel? Your MG could be adventurous, and curious. Love languages? That MG could be one who picks up languages quite easily. Love to work out? Your MG could be the outdoors-y type, You love to stay home? Your MG will be a homebody who loves to read, cook, clean, and watch Kdramas (hehehe), You see where I am going with this, don’t you?... Not bad heh? :-) And the MGs don’t have to eat as much as the one in this drama, b/c man, one would be spending her days cooking, literally (or he might be spending his days cooking, LOL)!
Also, b/c they are custom-made, they will take a while, so patience is key :-) There will be some main traits to the MGs though: thoughtful, funny (even without trying to be), loves to banter, considerate, sensitive, protective, smart, kind, wise, deep and humble, and VERY adorable. Would you like to add anything? Oh, and they can be in all kinds of professions or industries. What do you think of my description of the MGs, so far? :-)
And about this, "So agree with you, the cute little Mu-rim moments are the best." Yes, they truly are. I did not think of MG this way, but after rewatching the "eating out so you can have a good cry" scene (after reading the responses to my comments), I have come to realize that MG is also a deep thinking (at times) and feeling person, and that impresses me, a lot. I tend to like people who are deep, or who can go deep, emotionally and otherwise. I am personally that way. I love fun things, however depth is an attractive quality to me (and I am not tossing the fun out the window, mind you).
I finally saw in that scene, that MG KNEW all along that she needed a good cry (I could see it on his face, his reactions, and his body language), and watching it with the subs helped (which I had not done before). What impressed me the most, was that MG did not make a big deal about his gesture, he just did it, and yet, he was very thoughtful the whole time, and very mindful of her. That scene was all about what he was doing for her, and not about him, at all. And PYC played it so well, down to the subtle looks on his face, his reaction when the car was towed, acting surprised in front of her, etc... That is the measure of a good actor for me: when s/he can act in a language I don't know, and do no understand, and yet inform me (well) of what is going on in that scene. That is another reason why I love watching Kdramas. Intellectually and otherwise, they challenge me, always.

@ miricia, Hello there! :-)
I SOOO LOVED what you said about the kiss, b/c it is simply true. And to know that even the crew people were holding their breath, and that their heartbeat was going fast?! *looking for words to express how much that says about that kiss*
To know that the people who were on set felt that way? WOW!!!! That must have been something! I am so glad that SSK is getting to work with PYC, who seems to be such a considerate, and gentle guy. This kiss was honestly a "KYAA!!!!!!!" moment for me *Looks around for GB unnie, hoping that she will read this comment* And I agree, this kiss was perfect, and perfect for the OTP, for where they are at in their relationship. I felt that it was a way for MG to let CR know how he truly feels about her, if she didn't already know (she might not have put the pieces of MG's behavior together like we the viewers have). I am glad to know that I was not the only who sighed when I saw the kiss.
And I see that LollyPip gave Heartoppaya (sp?) what she wanted: we have pictures of the kiss, twice :-) Thank you, @ LollyPip for granting the readers of these recaps what they wish for, if you can :-) However, I respectfully disagree with this "but honestly? Analyzing it would ruin the magic."
No, analyzing the kiss would not ruin the magic for me (I am not in that group :-) ) It would make me appreciate it more. So, not only did I replay the kiss, but I also put my detective cap on, and did some very up close watching. And what I noticed was that when MG was actually listening and responding to CR (about her not remembering anything that happened 3 years prior to her accident), he had no sauce on the side of his lip. I know, b/c I looked closely, many times. They must have had to pause the scene, and add that, so that she could have to wipe it off, leading to the kiss. I think PYC was not enough of a sloppy eater. It's a detail, yet I thought it was an interesting one.
And @ GB unnie, to your comment (in ep.5 I think) about us being cautious about 1st time experiences, b/c they can disappoint us, and they are not (usually) all that? I was SO NOT disappointed with this 1st time (REAL) kiss for our OTP, au contraire! :-) Everything worked for this kiss and how it happened: how close the OTP has been getting to each other, skinship-wise and emotionally-wise, CR tending to a convalescent MG (I seriously loved it), MG simply receiving her care, and fully enjoying it (when was the last time someone did that for him? Poor man!) No wonder MG seeks CR out. I never thought about how lonely he must have been feeling since his sister died, until right now. Also, CR opening up to MG, and him listening to her, and comforting her (swoon), and MG taking advantage of the mood that was created up to the kiss, and created by their sudden physical closeness. See @ LollyPip, that did not ruin the magic for me. It made me sigh :-)

Hi Ivoire
I'm glad you have your KYAA moment in this show with a super sweet kiss! :) I was referring to real life kisses and first-times which are not necessarily as Kyaa as the ones we see in kdramaland. Yes this was good in that he took control, but left room for her to demur (if she chose to a 2nd time) and was slow, gentle and left no doubt about how he felt about her. Not a wishy-washy kiss(es) at all!
And immediately we have him finally feeling a tinge of pain. A sign that opening up his heart to care for someone is the way to regain his senses. I liked that after she practically ran out of his house, he stood there and placed a hand on his chest?... it was not just the wound but his heart he was touching or which was touched.

Hello GB unnie,
Yes, I did get my KYAA moment! And it was a worthy one, as I mentioned in my earlier comments. About this, "Yes this was good in that he took control, but left room for her to demur (if she chose to a 2nd time)." Did she demur a 1st time? If so when and where? I am confused now. Interestingly enough, I didn't get the sense that he left room for her to demur (really). Wasn't that why he pulled her back in (when she moved away), b/c he really wanted that kiss to happen? He wasn't all over her face (thank goodness for that), and he wasn't aggressive about it, however I felt that he was assertive enough to let her know that he wanted that type of skinship at that time. Just my 2cents. And yes, the kiss definitely let her know how he felt about her.
About this, "I was referring to real life kisses and first-times which are not necessarily as Kyaa as the ones we see in kdramaland." I have never based those kinds of real life experiences on what I see in movies or in dramas, so that to me was not (and is not) an issue. I separate fiction from real life, and I believe I know which one is which. Besides, GB unnie, you know how old I am, do you really think I would fall for that? I do like the squeeing though, just like the Healer beanies loved writing and reading about the drool pool. To each her own, right? :-) I also think that first times can be at times merely driven by curiosity, and that nervousness and errors do not come into play for the ones involved.
About this, "I liked that after she practically ran out of his house, he stood there and placed a hand on his chest?… it was not just the wound but his heart he was touching."
That is another interesting comment, b/c I thought I saw his hand go to where his wound was, not where his heart would be. When I saw that, I assumed that he was surprised to have felt some pain (something he had not felt in a long while, at least 3 years), and so he touched the area where his wound was, again. I loved that he stood up when CR was leaving, and said nothing, b/c he had to process what had just happened as well (was what I assumed). However, I did wonder if standing up abruptly like that, would not make him feel more pain... I think he might have been as surprised as she was by what had just happened. Would that explain why he had not called her back (yet)?
I liked this though, "it was not just the wound but his heart ... which was touched." Well said, and good food for thought (for me).

HI Ivoire
The first 'demur' if it can be called that, was her pulling away as he approached. The chance she had to get out of it although he was pulling her closer, was simply that he did it slowly enough (and held on to only one of her hands) so that she could have forced him to let go if she really did not want a kiss.
Yes, the place he touched was not near enough to his heart, but something about his expression (and here it could be me reading more into it that there is) seemed to be a question not only about the pain but also whether it was linked to how his heart felt about CR.
About first-times. I expect kdrama first-time kisses in rom-coms between the OTP to mostly be great. That time my comment was only to say that it's not so in RL so people may get disappointed... not necessarily that you would :) and yes I know, my dear, how old we are heheheh!

A moment of silence for Chorim's parents- killed for a soup recipe! I swear to the dramaland deities, I'm still reeling at the fact that Jaehee could've killed Chorim's parents so that he could get the soup recipe they had :|
Also yes +1 to Baekkyung possibly hinting to Moogak and not Jaehee- that is, if we're working under the assumption that Baekkyung knew his letter wasn't delivered ;n; Aww, Chorim and Moogak finally kissed kissed: not the 'accidentally bumped into each other' kiss they teased us with the last episode. Yeah, how ruthless is that, haha - make Mom write down the recipe, then plagiarise it on your cooking program (and feed it to her daughter - not intentionally, of course, but what diabolical timing!)
I don't envy Cho Rim when she remembers Jae Hee's face. I sincerely hope it's not the first face she remembers!

Tipping off the murderer with riddles...writting a letter with her name then dropping it in a package intended for him is a bit heavy handed indeed, dear writers, but I am happily waiting for the moment when he goes after the heroine :)

@wildfly I think the letter the doctor wrote (about his attempt to kill Cho Rim/save his wife) still has yet to be discovered. The handwriting in the "book" with the clues is a separate document or "book" that Chef is making his victims journal.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!
The progress is going well so far with this drama as the plot develops. I agree that Jaehee is acting more and more in haste now, which could only mean more prone to error. I knew he wasn't gonna be able to off Mugak in the hospital that easily. But man, still scary to know that the first option for him is always to kill in order to silence someone. The discovery of the clues was fascinating. I know Mugak will learn about Chorim being the witness soon. I also think that Dr. Chun must have meant for him to get this message despite also informing Jaehee through this means of revelation.
Mugak and Chorim cuteness and pettiness again!! Kekeke~ So much love!! The kiss was so sweet and tender. I also gasped at MG's sudden flinching. He must be feeling pain or maybe suddenly feeling the kiss... I wasn't sure, but it definitely looks like his senses are beginning to return. The wheelchair rolling downhill, the grocery shopping, having the soup at CR's place, just all so adorable and funny! XD The soup scene at the end was so touching--finally, something is cracking in terms of CR's memory and MG's sensitive and gentle approach in comforting her and letting her open her heart is great.
We're only halfway through, so I'm curious how the writer will handle the storyline from now on and how soon would the barcode murder case be wrapped. I'm also intrigued what drives JH to commit these murders.

I usually don't care about kissing scenes. Watching other people kiss is not exactly interesting per se (especially around here, where you could see that all the time on the street), and neither the American young adult make-out-kisses nor the K-drama dead-fish kisses add anything to its appeal.
Of course, kiss scenes are mandatory for these romance plots, simply because they are kind of the plot points in the romance development. And sometimes they CAN be pretty good. (For example, the water-kiss in IOIL with the subsequent conflict about consensuality and delusion was well done.)
Here, what made me so happy about THIS kiss scene was MG flinching from pain for a moment, and the fact that the show didn't linger on it. Show, don't tell, again.

I loved this episode (with our couple being unbearably cute) and the end left me thinking on what will happen next week.
Most likely Cho Rim will share with the chef this experience, sooner than later, since she will be curious about the soup. This will put her in great danger...I thought the writers would leave this plot point for the end of the series, but we are halfway and it seems that Cho Rim will be soon a target for the killer. I am curious to see what happens...cannot wait till next week!! :D

I think the doctor, by giving him a clue about the witness wanted to make him anxious and search for her, and by doing so, attracting the police attention and making mistakes. Baek Kyung already knew that Cho Rim has Mu Gak close by and will probably catch on very soon and protect CR.
Anyway, this drama is doing a great job so far, and a big thanks to everybody working on it. Also, I love all your comments and of course the recap:) Thank you LollyPip!

I am confused about one thing. Granted CR's fake dad wants to protect her from getting her identity known, but at least letting the police know beforehand would be better. Why would he run off and leave the poor girl in that house alone, heck that neighborhood doesn't have people walking around at all... Or maybe writer means for Mugak to ask her to move in with him later to protect her. Because knowing the crazy Chef i know he wouldn't mind break into that house and kill her off and noone would know, just like he did with some of his victims.
Now I think about it, i want Chorim to move in with Mugak hahahaha

OK, this is my theory about the doctor's weird confession that the witness is alive. Basically, putting people in that room causes people to have some kind of psychological meltdown (I mean, even if a serial killer told you to, would you write up your whole life story?) where they have some kind of compulsive need to reveal everything about themselves BUT the doctor was trying to protect Cho Rim so much that even though he had to reveal her existence according to the compulsion, he did it in code in the hopes that would stall Jae Hee.

so it's obvious that the Yeom is suspicious of Jaehee esp after seeing him at the hospital. He was the last non-cop person other than Cho Rim to be there. Why did the police show a clip of Jaehee on some cooking show to the clown telegram guy and ask if the voices sounded similar?
I'm also pretty sure that, that letter that Baek Kyung wrote to Cho Rim, but never sent, that got misplaced, is going to screw Cho Rim over. I'm guess it's in that storage unit and either Jaehee or Mu Gak is going to get to it first. And it's going to be a real pain in the butt when the truth comes out.
I also wish we dwelled a little more on the stab of pain Mu Gak felt but I guess they'll handle that later

I don't think that many people knew about it cos MG doesn't have family, and it looks like he doesn't have friends either except for CR. And Yeom did say that the murderer was probably someone close by cos he reacted so quickly.
Personally, I would have asked the ppl who knew about MG seeing the murderer and ask them whom they told.

He gripes that she’s more dangerous than the killer, and she gives him a shove the rest of the way down the hill. I was wrong, THAT was the best thing ever." LOL! Yes and lots more of that kind of give and take please!!!
It's wonderful how from the very beginning, the writer has shown that these 2 people complement each other so well... now it's in the give and take of pettiness (before we mentioned how they both can each slide in or out of cars without people being aware and of course she makes up for his lack of his senses).
This give and take is also already hinted at in the earlier ep with CR saying to MG that she knows he will not let anything happen to her and his request last episode that they should investigate together and that he would keep her safe. This is a foreshadowing of what's going to be really needed with the big reveal of who Cho Rim is, and when Chef pulls out all stops to kill them both. I'll be interested to see if CR does as much saving as she does of receiving help from MG. :)

On why Dr Chun left all these messages to Jae Hee, let's look at Jae Hee's actions and the consequences that have resulted from them.
1. "The golden fish must meet the lonely man" message - Jae Hee broke into his storage unit to search his belongings to solve the clue, which is actually a great risk since he could have been discovered. As it is, Mugak did discover his presence, and he was forced to take the offensive by stabbing Mugak. The end result? Mugak and team now have a profile of him - build, height, righthanded etc.
2. The message that the witness Choi Eun Seol is alive - Jae Hee visited the storage unit with Dr Chun's uncle, an incident that will be remembered and related to the police when required. He also laid a trap for the witness by cooking her favourite soup on national tv. The end result? The witness Cho Rim drank the soup, and it's the firs step towards triggering the memories she lost.
I believe that Dr Chun already knew that he was doomed to die, but that he still had the means to bring about Jae Hee's downfall, by forcing him out into the open and taking risks, through piquing his curiosity and then unsettling him. He may not know the exact means with which Jae Hee will execute his schemes, but he has the knowledge that Cho Rim is the witness, and doesn't remember anything, which is a source of protection for her, and most importantly, Jae Hee does not recognise her.
What works against him is that he does not know that the letter he wrote to Cho Rim has accidentally ended up with jae Hee

@ Lc
I was thinking that you've made some interesting points here. By leaving that cryptic message, he was assured that Chef would take notice of it and would not let it rest.
Doc probably knew Chef well enough to know that he would then be trying to tie up loose ends and find out what that message means, which could lead to his being found out, which nearly happened.
I was not sure if Chef had somehow cottoned on to Cho Rim being the witness, since he was so insistent that she should be at the Cooking program and allowed her to take the soup home, but probably not yet. He only has the x-ray with Choi Eun Sol's name and has not yet linked it to Cho Rim. He has yet to find Dr Chun's letter, as well.
So he is just putting the recipe out for all to see and hoping to get a reaction from the witness. Hopefully he won't go around killing all the random cooks who call up for his recipe!!!

I also believe that Dr. Chun leaving behind riddle is his last desperate attempt to help the police find the serial killer. It makes more sense that he intended to specifically leave the message to Chef Kwon in order to lure the chef out of the comfort zone of his lair, hoping that while searching for more clues in his storage container, the chef might slip up and end up getting detected by the police.
As much as I would like to believe that the message is meant for the good guy, I think even Dr Chun must have realized that logistically, it would be extremely hard and might take a while--if ever-- for the police to find his video message and other clues. In order to find Dr.Chun's video and book, the police has break the chef's alibis or come up with other justifiable evidence to get a search warrant for the chef's house.
Although have issues with his decision, it's understandable. Unlike Cho Rim's dad, who's sole aim appears to protect his child--Cho Rim--at all cost, the doctor is trained to protect all members of society. Thus knowing that more victims will be killed in the future, perhaps the doc decided that it's worthwhile risking the life of one in order to save many more in the future.

Good point. I think Dr Chun's got a strong sense of justice - that's why he wrote his confessional leter to Cho Rim, why he couldn't kill her to save his wife back in Jeju, and why he was going to work in Senegal.
I also liked what he wrote in his diary about how the patient's life is determined by the patient's destiny, rather than the doctor.

This is one thing that made me upset (Dr Chun's clue). If it was Dr Chun's intention to lure Chef out of his comfort zone, isn't he taking a HUGE risk? This is a very clever and scheming murderer we are talking about. Dr Chun himself should know how smart Chef is, being his best friend. And he swore to protect CR! How is this protecting CR, when he is leading Chef to her?
The ONE explanation that I can think of is that Chef drugs them into writting their life stories and revealing their secrets -so that he read them like an autobiography. That's why they are in books. Dr Chun maybe figured this out. He tries not to reveal this part of his secret but the drug is too strong. So instead of telling Chef directly, he came up with the coded message hoping that Chef woun't be able to decipher it.. Kinda far-fetched really. But I can't agree with all the other explanations.

Open Letter to the production team of "Smelly Girl."
I really like this K-drama. So much so that I am anxiously awaiting for the next episode EVEN when I am not completely finished with the one I'm watching. (Oh no. It's almost over! NO!)
Please, I can overlook small plot holes, because I am liking this so much. (Who knew observing the methodical planning of a serial killer could be so fun? But I digress. . .)
As a fan, I beg you, please, don't let Mu Gak get amnesia. Or even worse, don't let him get so freaked out for Cho Rim's safety that he "solves" it by running off to China for 4 episodes--or to Russia, to search for Elena Vishivalanova. Cho Rim's (Not really) Dad already leaves her alone for extended periods of time. Don't learn how to guard over her by watching how her not-Dad does it, Mu Gak.
Oh, and please, neither one of them (or both of them) can die and then get together for their "happy ending" in the next life? Deal? Cool? Thanks.
Thank you for writing this. Thank you casting director for casting this. Thank you actors for acting in this. (Thank you Micky for kissing like you do in this.) But please, now that I'm invested. DON'T BLOW IT! (thank you very much.)

The only one who I'll allow to get amnesia is the chef. Because how epic would that be? To not be able to remember who somebody was, even after they told you, because you couldn't remember their face more than 2 minutes.

i guess MG his lack of feeling pain, smelling ,etc is psychological, caused by the trauma of his sisters death. It made him "freeze" in life. Now Cho Rim has come into his life (and heart) so the more he starts to feel about her, the more i assume he will regain his senses. I can't wait for the first time he complains about the coffee being too hot or the food to spicey and then both realising what happened :)
Otherwise, i am totally smitten with these two and detective Ki 's girlfriend Elena vashilivas..idoknow..deserves a marriage proposal after this case, or at least a decent date !
i also think Cho Rim's dad took her in and hides her because he really cared about her. No alterior motive.
After all he looked out for her all those month's she was in a coma and the look on his face when they rushed her into an ambulance to transport her, the very day MG was brought in, that's an"omg , my little girl can't die" dad face.

I know we've said that we would overlook plot holes since this show and this couple are so much fun, and we're looking at the big picture ... however one thing that bothers me is the lack of police protocol or the unforgivable carelessness of Yeom and her team, who could leave MG unattended and at the mercy of anyone who entered the room.
Granted MG might have been pretending to be unconscious, but the fact that Chef Kwon was able to approach the bed and could have stabbed MG just before Yeom walked in, shows up the police and or the writing. It might be argued that it was a deliberate ploy to see who would try to get near MG, but it was not depicted as such in this episode, which means a lapse in witness protection of a very high order. :(

Seeing Chef Kwon able to freely enter Mu Gak 's hospital room also bugged me. And that sting operation strikes me as highly irregular and too dangerous. Ltd Yeom deciding to let Mu Gak staying in the case despite his personal connection is one thing, but allowing her team member to risk his life is taking it too far.
Also, our cutie pie Mu Gakie should have reported Dr Chun's storage to his superiors and have the place secured immediately. But no, Mr. Lone Wolf detective just had to go there to snoop around the place that night by himself. Seriously, if this were real life, Mu Gakie would have been dead meat. >.<
I don't know about Korean police protocols, but doesn't common sense dictates that once Dr Chun's storage container has been cordoned off after Mu Gak's stabbing, shouldn't it be off-limit to everyone except for investigating personnel? And why did they give permission for Dr.Chun's father to enter the storage? And I can't believe that they allow a "family friend" to enter as well?
As we all know, Kdramas with their live-shoot system tend to produce imperfect dramas. They simply don't have time to finesse everything. I can deal with little glitches as long as the overall arc of the story chugs along relatively smoothly. But I have noticed that this writer has the tendency to make some of his characters-even the ones in Rooftop Prince--do stupid/illogical things in order to move his plot from one point the next. So far, the romance and comedy parts are pitch perfect, but the man needs to tighten up the loose ends in the mystery/suspense department. This drama has the potential to become a really good one. I just hate to see it ending being only a decent because of lazy/lousy writing in one component of the drama.

I am amused by the amount of eating that goes on in this show. And as was commented on before, by how each meal brings in something of interest or takes the story along. This episode is no exception with the kiss at the table and CR's returning memory with the taste of the soup.
What struck me as funny this time is that we have the opposite of the food give and take argument... previously she was not happy that she had to do all the barbequing and he did all the eating without giving her a chance to eat.
In the first meal this episode, CR did the cooking and was only too pleased to place all the dishes near him, telling him to eat everything ... and why... because when she tasted her food, twice I might add, she did not seem to like it very much, but she was all "Oh well, he can't taste it anyway!" LOL!!! So there was no fight over the food that she had been 'forced' to run around the supermarket to buy. I would have expected that she'd insist on eating with him since she did all that hard work.
What an epic couple, with their give and take in all areas! :)

Hi Lc and Everyone,
About this cute balance and reciprocity between the leads. Not only is one not a good cook and the other a great eater who cannot taste (a marriage made in heaven, this! especially for me since I hate cooking!!!!)
But also we have in this episode the synchronicity of his beginning to feel pain and her returning memories. So they are again on the move in discovery at the same time.
There are so many little touches that show us this pair are meant to be together. They are journeying into greater self discovery and memories that were lost because they are together, and because they are meant to walk the same path.
This warms the heart so much that now I'm scared... a few more episodes to go... so the angst must be right around the corner!!!

I was so sad and worried when mugak injured eventho I know he will not die this soon. I even cried with chorim when she saw mugak in hospital room. but rewatch that scene will never be the same again, lol tsk tsk
the chef is so creepy. especially when he play a classic song on his car. I got goosebump. he really is a crazily scary psycopath. remind me of 3 Days villain, he also play a classic music. so scary.
and yesssshhhhhh!!! I agree with you all. love every single scene of our OTP!!! Don't ask me how much I rewatch it lol.
Again, I adore Murim for not hiding their feelings. In hospital, they have a walk and talk and Mugak asked, 'Were you sad?' Chorim answered straightly 'I didnt know how dangerous your job so please take care of yourself..' awwwwww moment but then something happened. hahahaha I love the way Lollypip write this scene ^^
to be honest, because we got accidentally kiss in eps 7, I didn't expect at all that the real kiss will happen this early. until Chorim clean Mugak's lip, I still have no idea. so I was so surprised like OMGGGGGG. and the kiss scene so beautiful. perfect cinematography, perfect music, perfect actors. I love it best when Chorim gently back aways till her face disappear from screen then Mugak gently
pulls her awwww they make it so beautiful.

The villain in Blood also listened to good music... somewhat classical? And Chef appreciates good wine....
It's this juxtaposition or contradiction of one who is depraved/so evil (which should be base) being able to appreciate something beautiful (which is refined and not base) that is shocking. It throws our concept of what evil should be like or look like out the door and warns us to beware of even what appears to be the most innocuous and beautiful. This is scary ... and a good warning, but true, and is worth remembering.

it usually takes a madman or a fractured soul to create beauty too. Mozart, Van Gogh, Tesla, Hemmingway, Picasso, Dali, Beethoven, Jim Morisson, all of them had at least one or more serious flaws or character twists to them.I have seldom know creative or briljant minds with a "normal" life or a moderate outtake on life. I guess the price to be payed for genius is a hefty one. So maybe the reason evil people are usually interested in music, art, books..etc isbecause of envy or they notice a kindred soul?

-cont- I also feels he begin to return to act like his original character. Hahaha he is quite bubbly now. And another awww moment when Chorim come to him running, Mugak who is waiting in front her house said 'Why are you running? You can call that you are late, what if you get hurt' he worried about her first of all. after that.. his action, ah, too cute. he wanted to spend a long time with Chorim. he care for Chorim so much he jump of his chair to sit beside her. now tell me how to find Mugak in real life T.T
fyi, there are fun facts (to me) about the casts. I forget I read it where.. its said that in Variety Show We Got Married, NGM actually hates to cook. but he is a good chef in this drama. haha. and SSK is actually a good cook in real life. and PYC have said his ideal type is a housewife and he loves the look of woman when they cook and wash dishes. PYC also agree to a opinion about how every man love his girlfriend wipe his sweat barehand without feeling gross. I don't know if its a coincidence or not. If its planned, I am surprise at how detail the writer.. but the other side, it help both PYC and SSK to act the coming kiss scene perfectly.
I hope the show keep getting better and surprise us.
thanks a lot Lollypip for the recap ^^

I still don't understand how Jae Hee deciphered the doctor's clue "the golden fish must meet the lonely man". . . It sounds like a reference to the OTP more than anything!
And I'm hoping that the fast pace of the storyline doesn't mean we are going to get many episodes of Mugak angsting over the fact that his sister was killed in Cho rim's place... don't do that to us, writernim! Don't ruin the good thing you have going here... If the doctor could come to grips with the fact that Cho rim would (and should) live while his beloved wife had to die, then Mugak - who loves Cho rim- can definitely do the same when it comes to understanding his sister's tragic death. None of this is Cho rim's fault, and Mugak is in general so sweet and understanding with her . . . it will break my heart if the angst is prolonged over this.
I love the low-key relationship of the main couple -- they are perfect for each other, and watching them together is so much fun. And - despite Cho Rim's protests to the contrary -- if they are not boyfriend-girlfriend, I don't know who is! I think they have been dating for several episodes by now. :-)

How cute was MG's If You Give a (Mickey) Mouse a Cookie routine?! Well, if you give me some soup, I'm going to need some rice to go with it. Speaking of the smooch, as soon as I saw YC pulling SSK ever-so-slowly towards him, I flashed on the scene he had with PMY in Sungkyunkwan Scandal in which he slooowly removed their hats before kissing her.

Aw the kiss scene in this episode was really good! I love how Mugak initiated it, and Chorim was hesitant at first but reciprocated. Also, I liked how the kiss stopped because he was starting to feel pain again, but at the same time, I wish his condition had been explored more in the drama? (I feel like it's mainly alluded to just by the mountains of food he eats.)
Also, why did CR's dad just leave? Was it to throw people off his scent and stop asking about CR? But wouldn't he also want to stay to make sure she's safe?
And WHY did the doctor tell the chef about the witness?? I'm really hoping there's a good explanation for this because I can't see how he thought it was a good idea T__T I saw the comments speculating that he wanted to force the chef out there so that he could make more mistakes, but idk it's hard for me to believe that he'd put her in more danger for the sake of the chef getting caught. (Especially since the chef didn't know about him before.)
Also, are the police not going to examine the storage case further? Do they not thoroughly look at those things when the person is not suspected of being a criminal himself? Or are they not allowed to? I still feel like this doesn't make sense because why wouldn't they investigate the storage case to see 1) what the Barcode killer had taken from it and 2) if there was anything noteworthy that could give them clues about what he wanted to tell him. Because they'll discover the letter if they actually looked through everything! If they are allowed to, I feel like this should've been the first thing to investigate?

Maybe the show is holding out on the storage unit exactly because it would solve the question of CRs identity instantly.
The letter surely will be the last clue that points the police to CR being the witness (because I doubt that YH will visit the unit again).
Like LollyPip I also feel like the case is unraveling waaay to fast, so I would welcome any kind of pause. :D

For all MG knows, CR might have magical lips that make him feel again.
And I think he should test this theory ... again and again and again! *perverted smile*
In any way I must say that the development of romance in crime dramas (or any other genre other than rom-com) feels very natural and effortless. People develop feelings, people act on feelings - and there are hardly any stupid I-must-listen-to-my-derranged-Chaebol-mother plot arcs etc.
We've seen it recently on Healer or YAS.
The reason probably being that there is enough suspense to fill the show without the need for overy dramatic rom-com antics.
Yay to that!

On looking up wikipedia... Psychopathy is "traditionally defined as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior."
His going into the room to kill MG right next door to the cops could be the "disinhibited" "bold" behavior bit coming to the fore. On top of all that 'disability' he may have an over-the-top arrogance where he thinks no one can catch him or he'll always succeed... as might be surmised in how he stabbed MG and just strolled away without checking that MG really died or not.

If you remove all the salt and stuff from the sea, all you have left is a bunch of calcium deposited by a bivalve. Still, I can see it as a good hook to help Cho Rim get her memory back. I'm assuming she has to for the entire drama to unfold.
One other point. I thought I saw Chef Jae Hee as part of a love triangle, but then again maybe not. After all, he did kill his own extremely pretty girlfriend. Sure she found out he was a serial killer, but is that anyway to treat a girlfriend?

@ Brian
In the Dating Rulebook of Psychopathic Killers...
Rule #1 : Allow girlfriend/boyfriend to remain alive subject to condition in Rule 2.
Rule #2 : Kill girlfriend/boyfriend when they find out you kill people.
Rule #3 : Date only if you wish to have fresh victims on an ad hoc basis, since socializing is such a chore.

As always, so enjoy reading the recaps and seeing just what I may have missed by reading, and not knowing the spoken language.
The movement of the two leads to a closer connection is nice to see, and covered at length here by those commenting. My question at this time is about adopted dad Oh. So, he seems to take out of town job trips, okay. This one seemed, at least to me, to be rather sudden especially on the heels of the two police asking him questions, just me?? My thought, yah like it’s important, he has packed and left the house, even to the point of taking a photo of him and Cho Rim with him. When Mu Gak came in for the soup, he did not pick up or note a picture of her and her dad together. Dad took it with him so that if anyone came to the house it was not there for anyone to question their relationship? Also, his sudden departure a rouse and he is just around the corner keeping an eye on her to swoop in and protect her when things get too hot and danger comes a knocking??
So many questions still, but oh the joy of the ride this is taking me at least on. I just look at the blank tv screen between episodes and rock back and forth, mumbling more, more, more . . . . .

This is an interesting take on the elusive and obscure Daddy Oh. His appearances in the show seem to hint that he is not totally to be dismissed, and yet, the writer is holding out on us as to his backstory, the whys and hows and just dropping a clue (as to suggesting that it could be for witness protection) on why he is in Cho Rim's life at all.
It could be that he's disappearing to avoid more questions so that he does not inadvertently reveal who Cho Rim is.
It would be great to know that he is really hanging around her a lot more than appears. I was about to complain that his leaving frequently and the fact that we seldom see him, seems to indicate that she is not being protected.
I was also hoping that there would be another photo of dad and Cho Rim in the house so that MG would put 2-and-2 together. But Daddy Oh seems to be one step ahead of us, if that was the only displayed photo.
Something in Lollypip's recap and what Cho Rim said about not remembering in her heart her parents when she sees the photo of them got me questioning ... does it mean that she *does* know she had another set of parents? I'm not sure if she is referring to a fake photo of Daddy Oh and someone who is purported to be her mum or whether she's ever seen a photo of her real parents. I'd really like to know. :)

I think that Cho Rim was saying that when she looks at a photo of Daddy Oh and the woman I'm assuming is his deceased wife, she doesn't feel anything. And she wonders about that because she thinks her heart should remember something when she looks at her parents (at least, who she thinks are her parents).
I had been enjoying the show in a light way, but I don't know if I could overlook all the plot holes. There are the ones already mentioned by the commenters -- why would the doctor give the killer clues as to the witness who's still living?!! (I think the writer(s) wants to create the tension of having the Chef looking for Cho Rim, but god, that's just lazy writing. The doctor just goes around leaving x-rays of Eun Sol/Cho Rim and a letter explaining his history with her, and leaving direct clues to the killer about her existence. Seriously?!) And why is Mu-Gak going to the storage unit in the middle of the night by himself? And we have a Russian girlfriend for the other cop just so she could send him matryoshka dolls, so that it could provide a clue to the cops about the truck?
I was also thinking that Cho Rim doesn't seem to think it's weird that there are no pictures of her or any evidence of her having been a child with Daddy Oh. I suppose Daddy Oh could have purloined her childhood pics that don't have her real parents in it, but seriously, Cho Rim doesn't wonder why there are no pics of her and her fake parents together in the first 18 or so years of her life?
Sorry to be negative, but the last few episodes have really disappointed me. I know there's a suspension of disbelief about Cho Rim's ability to see smells, and Mu Gak's lack of sensory feedback, but I like my drama characters to do things that make sense within their imaginary world.
