Girl Who Sees Smells: Episode 6

Another day, another case to solve, though this one comes with a bit of fun for the whole detective team. Cho-rim and Mu-gak grow closer yet, as some brutal honesty gives both of them something important to think about when it comes to their future, at least as friends. But an important break in the Barcode Murders investigation simultaneously brings the detectives closer to solving the murders, and puts them all in more danger than they realize, unless they can work fast to catch the killer.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Under the falling cherry blossoms, with a sleeping Mu-gak’s head in her lap, Cho-rim leans down to gently blow a blossom off his cheek. Suddenly Mu-gak wakes to find their faces very close together, and they both freeze. Mu-gak sits up and wordlessly folds Cho-rim into a hug, and she melts. “I like you, too,” she tells him, and Mu-gak just smiles and hugs her closer.

But it’s just her imagination — Mu-gak is still asleep on Cho-rim’s lap and it’s beginning to rain. She shakes him awake and he apologizes for falling asleep on her, asking what he’s like when asleep like that. Cho-rim says he’s like a zombie and, still befuddled from her daydream, hobbles away even though her legs are half-asleep from his weight.

Mu-gak is adorably confused at her strange behavior, but follows her to her bus stop to see her off. He’s even more thrown off when she gets on the bus in a hurry. After she sits, she motions for him to check his hoodie, and he finds the little teddy bear he gave her. He jumps on the bus to ask why she gave the bear back.

Cho-rim fibs that it’s because he said he got it as a freebie for buying one, and she doesn’t care for freebies. Mu-gak pouts that she doesn’t even know if this bear was the free one, and the bears were identical anyway. She says she accepted it because she didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but he just says that since she accepted it anyway, to take it back and throw it away if she doesn’t want it.

Knowing it was really for his sister, Cho-rim gives herself away by being horrified at the thought of binning the bear, and she gives it back to him again. She tells him to keep and treasure it, and gets off the bus quickly. Mu-gak accidentally squeezes the bear, causing it to repeat his message to Eun-seol, and realizes it’s the one he meant to leave for his sister, and also realizes that Cho-rim knows and that’s why she gave it back.

Baek-kyung packs up his office, having accepted another job all the way in Senegal. He finds Cho-rim’s medical files and packs them too, and suddenly connects Mu-gak’s screaming at him with the name Choi Eun-seol. He says to himself that if the wrong Choi Eun-seol was killed accidentally, then the true witness must still be alive. He staggers a bit with the realization: “Oh Cho-rim is the witness.”

Later he talks to the company that shipped all his files, and discovers that they accidentally took Jae-hee’s wine box, the wine box he asked Baek-kyung to remove from his house when he was in jail. Jae-hee comes to his office for the box, but he’s not angry as long as the company found the box. The friends are sad they won’t see each other for a couple of years, and make plans for dinner.

Cho-rim talks to her director, and tells him that Mu-gak won’t be her partner anymore. He reminds her that he only gave her a second chance if Mu-gak was her partner, because alone, she’s just not very good. Ouch. He does offer to let her stay as crew, though he can’t pay her, and Cho-rim gratefully accepts.

But after Cho-rim leaves, the director asks Woo-ya to help out Cho-rim by getting her a partner and some comedy ideas, so that she can make it into the troupe eventually. Awww, that’s so sweet, and Woo-ya grumpily agrees. Meanwhile Cho-rim starts her new job working for Jae-hee as a waitress, and he smiles at her enthusiasm.

Before he leaves the country, Baek-kyung sits to write a letter to Cho-rim (who he also addresses as “Choi Eun-seol,” unaware that she doesn’t remember who she really is). He says he’s been wanting to apologize to her, because once, he wished for her death. We see that she’d been in the same hospital as Baek-kyung’s wife, at the same time as his wife had been waiting for a heart transplant.

Cho-rim had been given zero chance of survival, and he’d hoped she would die so his wife could get her heart. But Cho-rim had hung on, and his wife was dying, so Baek-kyung decided to facilitate Cho-rim’s death. He’d planned to inject her with something that would kill her painlessly, but when the time came, he had stopped at the last second. This explains so much.

In the letter he apologizes for nearly killing her, and says that she seems so happy these days. He writes that he doesn’t want to shatter that happiness, so he probably won’t send this letter. He asks her forgiveness, seals the letter, and leaves it on his desk. But when he’s not looking, a nurse mistakenly packs the letter with some books.

Mu-gak comes to eat at the restaurant and sits in Cho-rim’s section, but carefully avoids looking at her even while ordering. Hilariously, he orders the wine that’s on special two-for-one — he’s so freaking precious when he’s being petty.

When she brings the two wine glasses, he stops her from leaving and asks with extreme seriousness which is the free one and which is the one he paid for. Cho-rim rolls her eyes so hard, ha. She tells him to decide, but he reminds her that she said she could tell.

Jae-hee interrupts their bickering to thank Mu-gak for proving his innocence in the murder of his chef colleague. Mu-gak apologizes on behalf of the police, and Jae-hee proposes a toast with the two wine glasses. Interestingly, they clink glasses but neither of them actually drinks.

Mu-gak takes a call from Baek-kyung, who mysteriously asks him to meet at a church that evening. Jae-hee seems relaxed, but he sees who the call was from and listens in to Mu-gak’s side of the conversation.

Baek-kyung meets the deliveryman at Jae-hee’s house to receive Jae-hee’s wine box. The man asks him to check the contents, and Baek-kyung slices open his thumb on the latch. Jae-hee arrives home just as the deliveryman is leaving, noticing Baek-kyung’s bleeding thumb as he takes his box back. He offers to bandage it inside, but Baek-kyung says he’s busy with moving plans, and quickly leaves.

Inside, Jae-hee opens the wine box, and to exactly nobody’s surprise at this point, it’s full of Ma-ri’s missing diaries. He flips through one diary and when he gets to the end, we see that he’s pasted into the book a photo of the barcode that was sliced into Ma-ri’s wrist — I knew it, he’s the Barcode Killer! But his eyes narrow with fury to see a smear of fresh blood on the photo… Baek-kyung’s blood.

The innocent-after-all Baek-kyung drives away, valiantly trying to keep his composure. A short flashback shows that he saw the photo of Ma-ri’s wrist in the book just before Jae-hee arrived home, and he’d only just barely managed to keep from giving away his horror to find that his friend is a serial killer. As he drives, he focuses on one thing — he must protect Cho-rim, the only witness.

Baek-kyung goes to the church where he arranged to meet with Mu-gak, and sits to wait in the pews. The door opens, but the person who enters isn’t Mu-gak… it’s Jae-hee, and there’s literal murder in his eyes. Oh no.

Baek-kyung plays it cool, and the two men sit to talk. Jae-hee asks why Baek-kyung’s here when he said he had to prepare for his move, and asks if they can pray together. Jae-hee clasps his hands and closes his eyes serenely, but Baek-kyung can only sit and shake with fear, unsure what to do. He decides to make a run for it, but Jae-hee grabs him by the arm, quick as a snake.

When Mu-gak arrives, the church is empty. He sits to wait for Baek-kyung, but something tells me he’ll be waiting for a very long time.

Since Mu-gak made a point to give Detective Kang all the credit for catching the drug dealer and his murderous employee, Kang is presented with a Certificate of Excellence and a cash reward to take his team out for some fun. Cho-rim is at the station borrowing some old uniforms for the Frog Troupe, and deflects when Mu-gak asks when they’re going to rehearse again.

They run into Detective Kang as he struts through the office, but a mix-up with the uniform hats reveals that Kang was trying to take the cash prize for himself, ha. Busted, Kang proposes that they all go out to spend the day together, and even invites Cho-rim along. She tries to politely decline, and I die when Mu-gak mutters that she has to go since she found the envelope. No, that’s not why, it’s because you liiike her.

They head out to the country to a little chicken restaurant, where Cho-rim comments to Mu-gak that for a chicken joint, it smells way too much like ramyun. He just brushes it off as probably the owner’s personal food.

They all agree not to call each other by rank while off-duty, and Kang especially likes it when Cho-rim calls him “brother.” They decide to play a game of Go-Stop, betting forehead flicks instead of money. Ki and Yeh form a team, Kang decides to be his own team, leaving Mu-gak and Cho-rim as the third team. Cho-rim worries that Mu-gak isn’t good at this game, but he insists he’s great.

Yeah, so, he’s not. Kang’s on a roll though, dispensing forehead flicks with great relish, even with Cho-rim. Mu-gak of course can’t feel a thing. Kang decides to up the stakes, betting punches instead of flicks, and Cho-rim agrees but shoves Mu-gak over to let her play.

Uh-oh, when a girl ties her hair back, you know it’s on. She’s pretty good, and Mu-gak cutely eggs her on as she uses her scent-seeing ability to gauge whether Kang and Ki are bluffing by seeing their scents change. She wins, and Mu-gak gets the dubious honor of punching his boss square in the face. At least he respectfully apologizes first?

Later as they eat (and Kang and Ki compare bruises, ouch), they ask Cho-rim how she got so good at the game. She says Frog Troupe does a skit about a professional gambler, and Detective Yeh whines that she should have told them earlier while rubbing his sore forehead, ha.

They complain that Lieutenant Yeom should have joined them and that she’s too intense, but surprisingly, Kang actually comes to her defense. He says her father was a policeman and was killed in the line of duty when she was young, which seems to touch Mu-gak in particular.

Outside, Detective Ki notices something unusual about the size of the building — it appears bigger on the outside than on the inside. Detective Yeh scoffs that only in novels do buildings have secret rooms. A tiny little granny passes them carrying a covered basket, and Cho-rim notices that oddly, the scent of money is coming from under the blanket.

She tells Mu-gak the lady must be rich because she smells (sees) a lot of money here, which is strange since there aren’t many customers. Mu-gak thinks a moment then asks Kang to call the station for reinforcements, as he thinks this is an illegal gambling house.

Ki, Yeh, and Mu-gak go back inside and find a hidden door, and HAHA, Ki tries to count to three but on two, Mu-gak shoves them both through the doorway and right into a huge room filled with people playing cards. They all run, but are stopped outside by the team that Detective Kang called in.

Cho-rim is knocked to the ground in the kerfuffle, and Mu-gak hears her cry out and drops his suspect to run to her. He picks her up and brushes her off, then leads her to a safe place. All together now… AWWWW. As they file all of the offenders onto a bus to the police station, the whole team give each other thumbs-up.

At the station, the restaurant owner asks how they knew it was a gambling house. Mu-gak explains that the place smelled of ramyun even though it was a chicken place, since ramyun is faster to feed to large groups. Then the gamblers started running out of money and borrowed some from the owner, which is why the granny was walking around with baskets of money. Again Mu-gak gives all the credit to Detective Kang, who grins at him gratefully.

That night Cho-rim is excited to see Mu-gak waiting for her to come home, and stops to spray on perfume. He brings a gift of red bean cakes from Detective Kang, and asks her to sit down to talk. He asks her again to stop getting involved in the investigations, and starts to explain, but Cho-rim interrupts.

She says that lately, she feels like her “devil-colored eye” is finally useful, and that she can do something with it that helps people. She says he probably can’t understand how that feels, but Mu-gak just worries that it’s too dangerous. Cho-rim tells him that he’s always right next to her at the investigations: “You can protect me when I’m in danger.”

Her utter trust in him seems to rock Mu-gak, and he can’t think of anything to say in response. She goes inside, leaving Mu-gak gulping air like a stranded fish.

Mu-gak goes to Baek-kyung’s empty office, where his nurse says he’s gone, and leaving for Senegal today. He makes a quick call to put a travel ban on Baek-kyung, but his flight already left that morning. However, Baek-kyung wasn’t on it, and there’s no sign of his leaving the country.

Jae-hee makes a meal, notably plating up two portions. Mu-gak arrives at his place as he’s eating and Jae-hee offers to make him something if he’s hungry, which tells me that the second meal was already fed to Baek-kyung (who is probably in the “wine cellar,” I’m assuming). Mu-gak declines, and they sit to talk over coffee.

Mu-gak asks when Jae-hee saw Baek-kyung last, and he answers that it was two days ago when he found out his friend was moving to Senegal. He expresses surprise that Baek-kyung hasn’t left the country, and shows Mu-gak the box of books that Baek-kyung mailed to him (the same box in which the nurse packed his letter to Cho-rim).

At the station, Mu-gak and Lieutenant Yeom talk about how it’s strange that Baek-kyung would tell everyone he was leaving the country, but never get on his plane. If he was fleeing the country he would have done the opposite, and caught a flight in secret. Yeom suggests they put Baek-kyung on the wanted list.

Mu-gak meets Cho-rim at a fan meeting for Jung-shin, the bassist from the kpop band CNBLUE, giving the innocent idol the side-eye when he shakes Cho-rim’s hand. HA, I love meta-funnies. Cho-rim shows how Jung-shin’s distinctive autograph can only be read upside-down, but Mu-gak is annoyed that his thunder was stolen and throws a package onto the table at her (“It’s not a freebie!”).

Co-rim gapes at him when she opens the box to find sexy lingerie, and a matching set of furry handcuffs. HAHAHA~snort~, that’s awesome, especially considering Mu-gak’s admitted love of handcuffs. But he was clearly shipped the wrong items, and Cho-rim calls to check the shipping barcodes. As she describes the barcode to the operator, Mu-gak looks at Jung-shin’s inverted autograph again and gets an idea.

He goes back to the station and checks out the barcodes from the victims’ arms, which previously didn’t seem to mean anything. He flips them over, and suddenly he sees the pattern. Lieutenant Yeom calls a meeting and Mu-gak explains that the barcodes are the same as those found on books. The murderer is comparing his victims to books, for some reason, and there’s a pattern to those numbers too — Mu-gak can even predict the identifying number that will be on the next “book,” or victim.

At his home, Jae-hee prepares two identical meals again… at least his victims eat well before dying? He takes an elevator in his home down to an underground library, and removes a thick book from his desk. He prints out a barcode sticker to put on the book, with the same identifying number that Mu-gak just predicted. On the cover is an engraving of the name “Chun Baek-kyung,” and the dates December 23, 1980 to March 7, 2015. Oh. Shit.

Smiling contentedly, Jae-hee takes the book to a shelf and lines it up with the previous books in his grisly “series,” each one marked with one of the same barcodes he carved into his victims.

COMMENTS

I KNEW IT. I knew this guy wasn’t right. I don’t know if I really believed Jae-hee was the Barcode Killer until this episode, but his whole demeanor from the beginning was just off somehow. He never seemed all that distraught over his girlfriend going missing, then found dead, and he’s never really reacted to other events like a normal, feeling person would. When he did display reactions, like his chef friend being killed, that eery blank face would show up again as soon as he was alone.

Now that we’ve identified our Big Bad, it opens up even more mysteries to solve: What are Jae-hee’s motives for the killings? How does he choose his victims? Why only one of two victims a year? Does he have multiple white rooms for the times he chooses two victims, since we saw Ma-ri in a room by herself, and we know there was another victim alive somewhere at that time? And what significance do the books in Jae-hee’s library carry? Obviously the books are a message or a form of memento, at least to himself. But why books? As a bibliophile myself, I’m dying to know.

I do have one complaint, and that’s that it’s lazy storytelling that the police never thought, in four years, to try looking at the codes from the other side. You’d think that the actual physical message the killer leaves on his victims’ bodies would be the first thing the investigators would want to decode. I do think they tried, since we saw that the carvings from the bodies had been converted to actual barcodes in the police files, which shows that an effort was made at some point. But really, nobody thought to turn them over? And even upside-down, there would still be an obvious pattern. Ah well, at least now we know what they mean, if not why they relate to books, specifically.

I’ll admit I was starting to actually like Baek-kyung in episode 5, and even more so in this episode. So I hope he’s rescued, because I would be sad if he’s killed off just when I was starting to think he’s a pretty nice guy after all. Yes, in a moment of weakness and great emotional turmoil he considered committing an unforgivable act, but in his defense (if considering murder can have a defense), he thought Cho-rim was going to die anyway and was trying to save a life, too. And who among us hasn’t had horrible thoughts? What makes us better than animals is that they stay as thoughts, and we don’t act on them. In the end Baek-kyung’s humanity prevailed and he did the right thing, even if it meant losing his wife. So I forgive Baek-kyung for his momentary lapse in judgment, especially since it seems like he’s been following Cho-rim around in an attempt to make amends. I only hope he actually gets a chance to do that.

Now that we know who the killer is, I expect the Barcode murders to take a more pervasive role in subsequent episodes, though I hope the show still keeps in the smaller cases that allow Cho-rim and Mu-gak to work together and become closer emotionally. Like Cho-rim said, helping Mu-gak gives her strange ability a purpose and makes her feel less of a monster, by using that ability to help people in a meaningful way. I also noticed that for the first time, she didn’t mention their deal for him to help her with her audition — she’s helping him now for the right reasons, and not just to get something she wants for herself. We’ve been saying for weeks that Cho-rim’s ability, and her courage and tenacity, would make her a fantastic cop. Maybe this experience will give her a new purpose in life, who knows?

And Cho-rim helping Mu-gak solve cases could be the way to break through to Mu-gak personally and heal him, too. Cho-rim’s absolute faith that he can keep her safe cuts right to the heart of why Mu-gak can’t feel anything in the first place — that he couldn’t protect his sister. The fact that Cho-rim knows that, and yet still believes that she’ll be safe as long as she’s near Mu-gak, just gets me right here. And since he’s a detective for the sole purpose of finding his sister’s killer, I would love to see him go back to his original career that he seemed more suited for, and let Cho-rim do all the sleuthing from now on.

@neutral

Hahaha! I'm an ODD goofball!! My father used to consider 13 his lucky number, so I'm the lucky goofball, I guess.

Yes I'm watching the show as a whole and am enjoying the 'big' picture so to speak and the budding romance and interactions. At the same time, (although holes are not what one consciously looks out for) the meticulous mind that has been honed by a dozen or more DB recaps into analyzing what we watch, instead of just watching breezily, just goes into automatic questioning when some bits seem contradictory, incomprehensible or don't hold well together.

We humans are amazing in being able to shunt aside stuff that may affect us and still enjoy the whole, but we know that if such-and-such had been orchestrated differently, we might have had a better viewing experience. Still, since we cannot know if we'd ever produce the same show and make it better than what we are getting, we might as well enjoy the ride and enjoy the commenting (even on the holes!) :)

I agree with all that GB unnie said here, and especially with this, " At the same time, (although holes are not what one consciously looks out for) the meticulous mind that has been honed by a dozen or more DB recaps into analyzing what we watch, instead of just watching breezily, just goes into automatic questioning when some bits seem contradictory, incomprehensible or don’t hold well together."

AHHH! So nice to see you on here GB? You and Chandler. I really want to watch the drama, but school has been holding be back. Probably will only get time after school ends, but I wonder if I could try to budget some time effectively and appropriately to be able to watch this. It looks so darned cute and fun at the same time.

@Ivoire

Nice to see you too! Haven't seen you since you left in the middle of Healer.

0

@ Skyofblue, Hello *Waves*

It is nice to see you as well. I hope that you are doing well, despite school being busy. Life does come and takes over, doesn't it?

This has been a nice drama so far. My fingers are crossed that the writer will be able to keep up with how she has been writing it. She does have a great cast, in the main OTP, and in the supporting actors and actresses as well. Namgoong Min especially, and Song Jong-ho do a really good job in this drama. There are a lot of really cute and endearing scenes, and the mystery has us keeping on guessing how some of the things might have happened. The OTP has great chemistry, great comedic timing, and they are funny. I saw Park Yoo-chun in Three Days, and I loved him in it (I thought he was excellent in it), and I am loving him here as well. So far, I have not found a flaw with his acting, or his delivery.

I hope you will enjoy this drama if and once you watch it.

Thank you for the recap, LollyPip!

I haven't read the first few recaps, and I was wondering: the Chef's house/apartment, is it DMJ's apartment (from YFAS)? It looks like it, a lot. Maybe someone commented on it (already), and I missed it.

DMJ's apartment was smaller, so was the kitchen and the living room area. And it was in a building of flats, whereas this is a bungalow. However, I'm pretty sure Mu-Gak's apartment was CSW's apartment in You're All Surrounded.

Hello @ shinayame,

For some reason, your screen name looks familiar. Did you comment during the Liar Game recaps? I feel like there was a commenter with the same screen name, who actually answered quite a bit of my questions, and responded to my comments as well. If that was not you, never mind then.

And I agree with this, "DMJ’s apartment was smaller, so was the kitchen and the living room area." It is just that the layout in Chef's home keeps reminding me of the layout in DMJ's place, except Chef has this room (on the left, for the viewers) with glass walls where he seems to keep a bike or something like that. DMJ did not have such a room, I believe (in his living room/kitchen area). I don't remember such a room in DMJ's place. And you are also right about the buildings being different, however I thought that sometimes in Kdramas, they would shoot two different places, and present it as one place (through editing). So for eg., LMH said that his home was actually two different places in City Hunter. They shoot the outside of the building from one building (to make it look big), and then the inside was shoot somewhere else. And LMH also said that he had to be at either one of the locations, at times.
I thought it might be the same for Chef's house, but now that I think about it, maybe not, since we actually have seen Chef and OCR stand at the door, and then go inside the house. So it is probably the same place, outside and inside.

Speaking of apartments, in ep. 5, OCR's apartment looks like PYC's character's apartment in Three Days. That living room and kitchen layout are the same. I thought that was interesting.

Also, OCR’s friend was a nurse in Angel Eyes (at the hospital), and the trainer (Andy) was a doctor at the same hospital, in Angel Eyes as well. Andy and another actor (who was in The King of Dramas, and also played a doctor in Angel Eyes), used to think that the nurse (OCR’s friend in this drama) was very wise, because she could supposedly figure out what was going on between PDJ (LSY’s character in AE), and his rival doctor (KJS, the 2nd male lead). The funny thing was that she was often wrong, and yet she spoke as if she was certain of what she was saying, as if she had a 6th sense. And the two doctors would often go to Ae-ri, to find out what was going on between the two male leads and the female lead, and take what she would say as truth. It is nice (for me) to see them in another drama (and recognize them). They were funny in AE. I really loved the two doctors' interactions with the nurse in that drama.

@ @ shinayame,
Now I have another question: if DMJ's apartment was in a building of flats, did they have basements? Because the way to his library lead downstairs, which felt like another floor to me. So DMJ's apartment had two floors, right? Would that be in a building of flats? Now I am confused.

I think DMJ's apartment is a penthouse, so it might be possible that there were two floors.

0

@ DaDaDa, Oh I see. Thanks!

0

To access Do Min-Joon's "basement", they had to climb the second floor first, then the library is hidden under that room.

0

@ kuromitsu,
That is very true! I had (kind of) forgotten about that. Yes, they had to go upstairs 1st, and then that room started with stairs that lead to the "basement," and the books were everywhere.

@ ByTheWay,

Yes, Cho Rim's friend (acted by the lovable Park Jin Joo) as well as the halmoni from the illegal gambling case were both in Bride of the Century.

@ shinayame,

So that IS you! *Waves* It is nice to read from you again, and to see your comments here :-) I remember our time on Liar Game fondly. You were one of the commenters who always responded to my comments (if you had some thoughts), until we had no more to say on that topic. Thank you for doing that. I learned so much during those recaps. I would also like to apologize to you, because I was supposed to respond to one of your comments in the last ep. (ep.12), and there was some info I was going to share with you, however I did not find the time to do it. By the time I was ready to respond, I figured no one would check on those comments to see if any additional comments had been added (I think it was like a week or 2 later), so I didn't write my comment. Sorry about that.

Coming back to the lovable Park Jin Joo, she was really funny in AE, and I loved her in it. I read about BotC, however I didn't watch it. Nice to know that she was in it as well, and in Unfortunate Boyfriend.

@ ByTheWay,

Hi Ivoire... Do Min Joon's apartment was really something else with a hidden room and so many shelf-levels of books around the walls, biggish living room, big bedroom, patio or some place they could lie around in to watch the stars, etc... not small at all the way it was shown.

No Chef's house is another nice place and a 3-storied house from the outside. The parts we saw look smaller than DMJ's place, although it's nothing to scoff at... kind of big hall and with kitchen flowing into dining and living room. Then he has also a hidden room/room on a different floor with lots of books, but it's not the same room as DMJ's.

There is also a room behind the white door, we are assuming is the place where he keeps his prisoners until he kills them. :)

Hello GB unnie,

You know, like I mentioned in my response to @ shinayame, I thought DMJ's house could be two places as well (one for the living room, kitchen and bedroom, patio, etc... and another one for his library, but I could be wrong). Also, DMJ's place had that area where they put the plants, which now that I think about it, if that apartment is used for another drama, those plants could be taken out, and that area be made to look different. Hum... I just realized that.

About this, "No Chef’s house is another nice place and a 3-storied house from the outside,"so the whole building we see of Chef's house IS his whole house, huh? I don't know why, but I thought he lived in an apartment building, though given his fame and his status, it would make sense that the whole building is in fact his home. And I personally think that the rooms in Chef's home are bigger than in DMJ's apartment, and not the other way around. We haven't seen his bedroom, but I would bet that it is big as well.

Also, about this "There is also a room behind the white door, we are assuming is the place where he keeps his prisoners until he kills them." I feel that we don't know that the white rooms are actually (really) in the same building (like in real life). Though again, now that I have said that, with a building that size, it is very possible. I do see you guys' points, and I yield to them, DMJ's apartment and Chef's are different places. There is some resemblance between the two however.

I have another question for you GB unnie: do you think that OCR speaks with honorifics to CMG, and that he speaks in banmal to her? In ep.5, when she asked him why he wanted to know where she was (she was at home), she said "wae-yo" (and not "wae" as I have heard it said sometimes), whereas in an earlier ep. CMG told OCR that he lowers his speech with the people he works with. So that makes me curious, do they address each other differently? She seems to do that in ep.6 as well. (I can't remember where now, but I heard it from her).

Hi Ivoire, I re-watched a bit to listen again, and yes, MG speaks to her in panmal and she responds in chundemal.

I believe it's because he sees her like a younger sister and they are working closely together so he does not feel the need to be formal, whereas, CR knows he is older and she was the one to request partnership with him too, so she's in a slightly subordinate position. It's just what seems comfortable to them. :)

So I heard right? thank you GB unnie! I am glad that I can detect those little details that say so much about the kinds of interactions taking place. Those things matter to me.

Headcanon: Dr. Chun got offed so that Song Jongho could go film Orange Marmalade.

But ok I actually shrieked at the church scene. I was like NO NONONONONONOONONON DR CHUN RUN GOD GAVE YOU LEGS FOR A REASON NOW USE THEM IN HIS PRESENCE but it didn't work out. I'm rooting for Chorim and Moogak to rescue him because I sense that his testimony would be critical to nail Jaehee.

(Not to mention how Chorim's already seen the perfume scent on the wine boxes- feel that'll definitely be important later, and also MOONGCHI BARKING AT THE CELLAR TOTALLY MAKES SENSE NOW. I bet the cellar is that white room filled with camera Joo Mari was held in.)

Thanks Lollypip for the recap!

Hello Poliwag,

I have to say that I was surprised to see that Dr. Chun could not escape Chef Jae-hee. He is taller and seems a little bigger than Chef. I really thought he would be able to get Chef's hands off of him, and make a run for it. I guess I was wrong, and that might have cut the plot short (they need enough material for 16 ep.), especially if, as you said, Dr Chun (SJH) has to be in another drama (though those actors are also known to be in two dramas at the same time). I don't know if Dr Chun is still alive (maybe not [at least by next ep.], since he has a book now *Shivers*), however I wish he would be, so he could join team CMG and OCR to fight Chef, convict him, and put him behind bars.

Recall that Dr. Chun was literally shaking with fear, though. When Chef Kwon grabbed his wrist, Dr. Chun looked to be paralyzed with fear, and I think the Chef took advantage of that.

Hello @ Alessar,

You know, I didn't watch My Secret Hotel, so I did not see NGM's shower scene. Thank you for sharing that Instagram picture, that says a lot. I can see that Chef is physically well built, though he seems small in frame, or at least smaller than Dr. Chun. And I would think that the actor who plays Dr. Chun (SJH) is also well built. Many of the actors are, in that industry.
I think the theories of DR. Chun being paralyzed by fear make sense to me, and I will go with those. Thank you for your added thoughts however.

I'm liking (not loving) this drama so far but there are glaring loop holes (or more precisely plot induced stupidity).
1. First of all it just baffles me that MuGak hasn't yet seen the photo of Oh Cho Rim (daughter of the fisherman couple). I think they are just waiting to milk the angst which this reveal is going to produce. But still no satisfactory explanation yet.
2. If the doctor is not the killer why did he act so suspiciously at the theater. I'm not talking about the following around/stalking..... that i understand he just wanted to observe how she's living her life. I'm talking about the particular scene at the theater in eps 3 or so where he runs away and mugak tries to give a chase. Once again plot induced stupid behaviour just to throw us off.
3. This is one point i can't get my head around. If the doctor deduced that Chef Kwon is the barcode killer why didn't he immediately call and intimate the authorities. Why the hell did he have to wait till the appointed time??? And of all the places they could've met they had to choose an abandoned church!!!!! And mugak if the other person made an appointment with you and he didn't show up isn't it common sense to call and find out the reason???? What the hell are the cellphones for???

Dont think from my tone that i'm hating the drama..... the chemistry between the leads and the ensemble cast and pretty much everything is going great. But still they can tighten the narrative. Right now I'll finish the drama but this maynot be in my top list or rewatch list

Oh i forgot to add another thing. It may seem silly but I'm guessing it'll be an important plot device later on. Its about the letter the doctor writes to chorim which he doesn't want to post which I get completely. Sometimes it helps to unburden your feelings by writing them down. The nurse puts it in the box which we later on see with the chef. I mean come on didn't he wonder what happened to the letter he just wrote with some important things about his own life and that of chorim??? This is another example of lazy writing. I guess they wanted the chef to deduce that the Eun sol he murdered is not the actual Eun sol he wanted to off and make the conflict a bit more personal again for our main couple. but still its lazy writing.

I totally agree about the writing week by week thing. Since k-dramas typically have a set number of episodes and a story to tell, who ever thought writing half of it and then setting off filming was a good idea? By the end, the live-shoot system has exhausted everyone.

I have read that the networks like getting viewer feedback and then certain parts of the story might be rewritten and other characters emphasized, but sometimes that really ruins the story.

I agree with your points there, bugged me too.

However, this is primarily a romantic comedy and not a mystery show. Just like with Pinocchio, the show is committed to the main genre and doesn't try to compromise with the lesser genres, leading to a more cohesive show at the expense of something that has to be perceived as "lazy writing".

0

Required fields are marked *

The lazy writing is my only gripe with the show. Let me add some more:
1) Cho Rim was obviously in a crowded area when the marihuana dealer came after her. Why did she hide in a bathroom closet? Couldn't they have shot the whole chase scene in a place with less people outside so it would make sense that she chose to hide instead of staying in plain sight of other passerbys.
2) Yeom (who so far has been drawn as an uptight-rule-stickler character) dismissing Moo Gak's breach of police ethics and endangering her investigation - and consciously burying the fact that his sister, another Choi Eun Sol was another victim of the barcode killer...

Gaa, I hate faulty logic. I just means the writer has not thought hard enough. You can write cohesively AND avoid that.

"Gaa, I hate faulty logic. I just means the writer has not thought hard enough. You can write cohesively AND avoid that."

You can, but it's not easy, especially not within the parameters of a K-drama production.

One example: The highly popular and somewhat acclaimed YFAS tried to merge a murderous mystery plot with an asymmetrical romantic comedy (and a little bit of supernatural stuff), not unlike Smelly Girl. And, in my opinion, it pretty much failed in that approach. The rom-com part was good, and the mystery part had a bit less plot-holes (than Smelly Girl), but both genre threads diverged and never really become one cohesive show.

Genre mash-ups are popular as subgenres in K-drama, but they ARE very hard to get right.

Cho Rim hiding is actually psychologically very logical. in a stressful situation, peoples´first instinct is "I want this to end as soon as possible" we strive to end stress. if you keep running, the stress continues. thats why many people do actually insinctively hide ( don´t animals also? They lie down and stay quiet). only animal mothers deliberately lure predators away from their cubs by running and stopping, running and stopping. But thats a game you can easily lose. gosh, do I sound like a godfather right now...? well, I studied psychology a little. I sort of understand that kind of brain mechanics
as to how Mu Gak found her, I am guessing she was in the vicinity of the police station anyway and he tracked her phone.

About the "hiding" thing:

As redfox already mentioned, "hiding" is one of the instinctive things to do when threatened. It was quite effective in the environment the human ancestors lived in a few million years ago. CR is not the most rational person around, she usually acts rather instinctive anyway.

There is also a good piece of fridge logic to explain why she didn't seek a more populated area: In Korea, the bystander effect is much, much worse than in the western world, and that is turned up-to-eleven in K-drama. Bystanders often don't bat an eye at people being knifed down, much less doing anything to prevent that from happening, unless they are the heroes of the story.

CR instinctively knows that, she might be stupid, but she is quite genre-savvy. Only one single person who can save her, and that's the male lead. She needs to survive long enough for him to find her. Hence she hides somewhere and blocks the door.

0

Jon--

Just want to clear up something...you mean the bystanders don't bat an eye for a person being knifed down...in kdramas, right? Not in a real Korean society, right? Cause that would be really really horrific to know.

0

I have heard that (in real life) the bystander effect *is* worse in asia. Not to to kdrama extent, I'm sure, but worse.
And in the western world, people have been stabbed without bystanders stopping them.

0

@ nomad,
I was also curious about what @ jon meant when he said that.

0

To clarify a little: I wasn't fully serious. CR doesn't seem to be genre-savvy enough to act like that because she knows the rules of the universe the writers made up. I just pretended for a second that she was.

Now as to the bystander effect in real life and K-drama:

CR would have a very good chance to avoid the bystander effect in real life in many a western country if she ran away to a somewhat crowded place. (Young woman, clearly threatened, vocal about the threat, by a person carrying a weapon, very little chance to mistake him for some kind of friend or authority figure of hers, etc.)
The attacker would be aware of that too and simply give up chasing her once other people are nearby if he is somewhat rational.

Now, in Korea, the bystander effect is both stronger and of different quality.
In the Western world, once people notice that a person needs help and they evaluate that they would be able to help that person (if only by calling the police or something), they might help or still do nothing (depends heavily on the circumstances). In Korea, they are much more likely to actively avoid the victim (yes, the victim, not the perpetrator, for example after the perpetrator knifes the victim down and leaves, people will very often stay/run away from the victim).

Now K-drama writers seem to be aware of that to some degree and use it, in an exaggerated form, in their shows, combined with drama hero logic. Only a designated hero can help other people. Normal people are, at best, hurdles in a chase.

Now IF CR was aware of being a K-drama character, her action to AVOID a crowd and hide to be saved by the hero would almost make sense, because in K-drama, a populated space offers zero protection per se.

1

@ Jon G., interesting thoughts and info! Thank you!

0

Kdrama or not, if a murderer was after you, the first and foremost instinct would be to survive. Unless one is frightened out of their wits, one would run towards the people around to get help. I don't think that a person in such a situation would have time to evaluate whether the people around would or would not help. In CR's case anyway, she had the time and presence of mind to text, not call MG. So this means that she was not that frightened that she couldn't think. Hence, her action didn't make sense. The best thing she could do was to run into a restaurant. Since she had time to TEXT MG a message (why she didn't call which would have been faster, I really don't understand), she could have taken out her phone and called for help in the restaurant or shop. I'm sure that would have stopped him.

The other thing that I would like to bring out is that Detective Yeom's actions in letting MG continue with the case is inconsistent with her character. Even if she empathised with him, this barcode murder is so important to her, so how can she let him continue with the investigation? If the authorities found out, she could and most probably be hauled up for disciplinary action, especially since she couldn't even stop him from travelling all the way from the police station to Dr Chun's clinic to threaten him. In addition, Dr Chun could very well inform the authorities about MG's personal involvement, and that would have put a spanner in the works.

The romance bit is engaging and cute and I really like CR. But I do wish that the writer would not gloss over so may things - makes it look like she assumes we are not very intelligent.

1

@ crazyajummafan,

Really loved your comments. And I agree with this, "But I do wish that the writer would not gloss over so many things – makes it look like she assumes we are not very intelligent."
Some of us made the same kinds of comments, in the comments' section of ep.5, I think. I would add to what you said in that last paragraph that it also looks like the writer assumes that those details we have been discussing, are not important. It also feels like she assumes that we are not paying attention, and that we do not care about watching a drama with a well written story. Yes, this is a rom-com kind of drama, but it is not only that. They added a few other genres in the description of the drama (fantasy and mystery, and maybe thriller?) and so in her writing regarding those (other) genres, it would be nice if she did it as well as she has done it for the romance and the comedy parts of the drama.

That is how engaged some of us viewers become, when watching a drama: we pay attention, and we would just like to watch a drama where everything made sense, or was at least cohesive.

1

I wonder if Yeom is giving him a pass to work on his sister's case because, having lost her own father, she empathizes with his need to find his sister's killer. Surely the writer'sgave us that information for some reason (though I'm only guessing that this is it).

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nah. Yeom gave Mu-gak the pass to work on the serial killer case because she sees him as someone capable of helping her out in solving the case. She only found out later that his sister was a victim indirectly.

0

I'd speculate that Lt Yeom's obsession with the Bar Code murders indicates a personal connection as well (maybe to do with her father, maybe not) - considering that she is such a stickler, she glossed over Mugak's personal conflict much too easily. Surely he's the one who'd be taken off the case, not her? (of course, she wants his help too, as others have pointed out)

Yes, exactly what i'm thinking, loop holes in K-dramas. Doc Chun should have opened the wine box and checked the books inside in the first time to make sure he collected the right box. The doctor doesnt use cellphone (it was mentioned on ep 2) maybe the reason why he just went straight to the church and wait for Mugak since he knows that he's the only person he can trust regarding the case. And who would have thought that the chef would overhear his conversation with Mugak regarding the place and time of their meeting.

True, it was revealed that Dr Chun doesn't use cell phone and this was also one of the reasons why we suspected him for being a potential killer earlier on, because it's weird, who doesn't use cell phone these days, right? But Dr Chun is one weirdo, you've a problem with that? I don't, lol

Even in real life, in a given scenario, it's easy to say; oh you should've done this, he should've done that and what not, but that's because we are not in the given scenario at the specific time. When you are watching things from the side line, everything looks clear and it's easy to decide the best course of action ;) but when you are in it, your mind tends to cloud, that's my take on this why he didn't do this, why he did that, and bla bla... haha

In real life, even with a person right next to me, I still have to listen intently and ask them to repeat some things, some times, but in kdramaland anything that is meant to be heard, even by a person meters away, who sometimes cannot even see the face of the speaker, can be heard perfectly! :)

But in this case, Mu-gak is standing not too far from Chef Kwon, so it's still believable. Trust me, I've seen worse, lol.

@ neutral,

I agree with this, "This is one of the many magic that only happens in KDramaland :) but we can’t complain too much, can we? Because we choose to watch, lol"
Though in CMG's case, I felt like he was standing quite a few steps away from Chef. And to me, unless CMG was speaking very loudly, I don't think Chef should have been able to hear what was being said.

I guess in this instance, I am like GB unnie, if I were in Chef's seat, I would not have been able to hear CMG's responses to Dr. Chun. And like you, yeah, I have seen/watched worse as well :-)

Doctor doesn't have/use cellphone. It is explained in ep 2.
Doctor felt guilty about the fact that he tried to kill Chorim, and noone knows about that fact so it must be hard for him to reveal it to anyone, that is why when Mugak came he ran away, must be startled. And he couldn't even face Chorim to tell her, he wrote a letter. So he wouldn't want anyone else to know about it.
Doctor did not know about the chef before he wrote the letter, so he thought he could go back to his office later, his flight was the next day. When he knew he freaked out, and wanted to go to the church to tell Mugak. Unfortunately, dude doesn't have a cellphone. Doctor doesn't seem so bright, if he is, he would have run sooner than that, why would anyone stay that long next to a psycho killer? So when a not so bright person freaked out, I doubt he would be so calm to know what he should do. Also, he must be shocked as well... the nice chef is a psycho killer...wouldn't expect it.
Someone doesn't look scary all the time, I doubt the doc looked that creepy if not for the background music which was of course intentional to make us suspect him.

LOL! I like how you put it. But he's already not so bright, so what I'm saying is; don't bully Dr Chun! He's a good person, my poor doctor, lol

Seriously, I personally think, it's not that he didn't know he has to run, it's more like his legs won't listen to him, like remember our Cho-rim in episode 1? When you freaked out, your mind will go blank, and your legs will not listen to you anymore, ppl.

Besides being shell-shocked after finding out that the chef is the serial killer, his buddy also just happened to show up for his "accounting books" right then and there. The poor doc barely had time to compose himself. And since he was about to meet up with Mu Gak at the church, acting like nothing has happened is the best thing to do at that given time.

And I agree that it's easier for bystander to point what should have been done. In fact, I think the doc handled the situation pretty well considering the circumstances. Too bad that as the doc left, he didn't know that the chef was about to find his blood ( from his bloody finger) on Joo Mari's wrist snapshot, and thus, the chef then realized that his friend--the doc-now knows that he killed his girlfriend.

Come on, once he knew that Chef Kwon was the murderer, the first he should have done was call MG and set up an earlier meeting. Why wait till night to tell him? Especially since he said that he was going to do what it takes to protect Chorim. And he knows that CR is close to MG.

It doesn't matter that he didn't know that Chef Kwon had seen his blood on the diary. There is simply no good reason to wait. This is evidence regarding a dangerous serial killer we are talking about - not some information on stocks and shares or even a lead on a suspect.

0

I think the answer to the first point is that Eun-sol/Cho-rim is under witness protection so information that would risk her being exposed has been redacted. Detective Yeom, who ranks much higher than Mu-gak, probably has clearance to view the hidden information.

I think Dr Chun acted so suspiciously out of lingering guilt. Perhaps he's been looking for an opening so he could talk to her but was startled into running away when Mu-gak arrived.

But yeah he should have contacted Mu-gak immediately when he realized Jae-hee was the murderer.

My favourite scene was the "furry handcuffs" thing. They put literally every motive into that very short scene and it still felt pretty fluent. And they managed an almost perfect resolution to that scene: MG's insight and CR's hilarious reading of the bar code ...

Hi guys!

I thought I fully understood what Jon G. meant here, " They put literally every motive into that very short scene and it still felt pretty fluent." However now, I don't think I did.
By "every motive," did Jon G. meant: 1-how jealous and petty CMG acted after OCR came back from getting her autograph and picture taken with LJS (from CNBLUE)? 2-How oblivious OCR seemed to be to CMG's jealousy and pettiness? 3-How smooth and nonchalant CMG tried to be when he gave the box (with his gift) to OCR?
And now I can't think of any other motives there would be in that scene. If you guys can think of more, please let me know.

And I am also assuming that by this " it still felt pretty fluent," Jon G. meant that the scene still worked, right?

Hi Ivoire

Jon G said "My favourite scene was the “furry handcuffs” thing. They put literally every motive into that very short scene and it still felt pretty fluent. And they managed an almost perfect resolution to that scene: MG’s insight and CR’s hilarious reading of the bar code …"

Motive (in art it also means Motif/Theme):
- repeated motif of her excitement vs his 'deadpan' self,
- comedic point of his failure at giving her the right gift again
- the suggestion that since he likes handcuffs maybe the furry handcuffs were not entirely a mistake?
- the motif of them getting closer,
- theme of and how they cooperate/work well together as in he gives her the wrong present and she calls the delivery company,
- how she trusts him... ie he says he did not order the naughty gift and she believes him unquestioningly,
- how they investigate ...she brings up the idea of reading the signature upside-down and he puts 2-and-2 together over the barcodes...

Fluent Resolution: Although it seemed to be a scene all on it's own and a bit disconnected, it somehow flowed well and served to bring the story forward on the right track and was not a waste of time...

The way barcodes are to be read is not to say 'thick line, thin line' (LOL!) but to read out the numbers printed with the barcode or to use a barcode reader. Cho Rim's hilarious reading of the barcode got him thinking along the right track.

It seemed a scene on its own but it was consistent with the story as a whole :)

You might be correct, but I think the doc is still alive. XD

In spite of the once-a-year killing inconsistency this time, I think the chef will still adhere to his usual ritualistic method of offing his victims. Perhaps like Joo Mari, doc is being kept in that white room with the cameras until the 6th day. He has been cooking for two, too.

Ugh, but if the team doesn't find clues in time that the doc got kidnapped by the Barcode killer, then he will die in a few days.

Thank you so much for this, @ lemonie!

They are indeed cute together, and they work well together too. PYC seems quite considerate of his co-star, putting back her skirt, etc... I also love how comfortable he looks on her lap. I don't ship them in real life, however I love seeing them in the drama together. PYC also gives good (appropriate) hugs. I remember the hug he gave KSH (in ep.2, I think), he made sure his lower body was away from hers, which I thought was appropriate. And I loved how he hugged SSK in that scene (ep.6).

Also, when he sleeps, he does so in the fetal position (I do the same). I have a picture of him (sleeping in real life), and he was in the same position, hugging a pillow. One of his JYJ band members might have taken the picture and posted it. I watched other BTS after the one you posted. He is really good natured, laughs a lot, and seems easy to get along with. He also seems to be sensitive and observant of the people he is with. He doesn't seem to make things about him (like a star only preoccupied with me, myself, and I). And that is nice to see.

I could be wrong about what I wrote, since I don't know him, and I have never been close to him, however based on what I saw, and could tell, (and on what I know of him, so far), that was what I sensed. Thank you again for finding the YT link for me :-)

1

Also, I had been wondering how PYC could keep such a bland and stoic face during the comedic scenes. Based on the BTS though, he can't, and he needs time to compose himself. He creates NGs, because he keeps laughing in the middle of some scenes. That is nice to see, because I would seriously struggle to not laugh, if I had to do it.

2. SBS The Girl Who Sees Smells 7.5%
3. MBC Angry Mom 7.3%

the knetz general reception is quite favorable (you can read the translated Knetz mwave comments at soompi TGWSS thread), they are pleasantly surprised at how adorable SSK had become, how natural PYC is,etc..it's just that tv viewers these days are mostly ajummas/housewives,they prefer UK because they can relate more with its story than that of TGWSS or AM..the younger ones prefer watching TGWSS live stream as pointed out by this:

I don't think this drama can catch up to Unking Women. It's going up against two really good shows with an already established audience. Unkind Women started out with really high ratings and got double digits pretty early on. It even beat Kill Me Heal Me even though KMHM was finishing up.

The best one can hope for is that it will eventually achieve double digit ratings.

This OTP just keeps on getting cuter. I love that he found out right away why she rejected his gift and spent the rest of the episode making it up to her (even if that's not what it was in his mind). Like you said Lollypip, he liiiiikes her.

My favourite moment has got to be when Chorim told him with absolute trust that he can just protect her, and he just has that utterly shell-shocked expression on his face. Got me in the heart a little, that did.

Props to the show for making me feel genuinely terrified in the moments leading up to Dr Chun and Jae-hee meeting in the church. I really hope he can be rescued, but I doubt it, because that would mean that Jae-hee would be arrested, and that's not going to happen in episode 7 obviously. Sadness. I actually really wanted him to be the one to tell Chorim the truth, in person.

I still have so many issues with the plot holes and nonsensical actions of characters that only serve to push the story in the direction the writer wants, but I've decided to let it go and just enjoy the feels. Because, CHUURRRRR.

Also, we better not get a fake-out imaginary confession next time. I want some real feelings to be outed.

I loved that look on his face too, and PYC just nailed it, as he does everything he is doing in this drama. It looks like it took him a while to let what OCR told him sink in (and process it).

I also loved how he tried to be smooth when he gave OCR the gift (the box), He had a little smile, kind of a smirk. But then he was mortified when she pulled out the contents. That was very cute as well.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

Really like how the series is unfolding as the killer is finally revealed. Definitely feared for Dr. Chun's life and it was fascinating to see the barcodes decided by Mugak. Also curious why Jaehee chooses books to use for barcodes and how victims are selected. Now that we know the letter Dr. Chun wrote is in Jaehee's possession, I'm waiting for the moment when he discovers that Chorim is the Choi Eun Seol that didn't get killed.

Mugak and Chorim are so cute together in their scenes. Love the development of their relationship and Chorim's complete trust in Mugak. They make a great sleuthing team! Funny how Chief Kang is benefiting from these solved cases. XD

I feel so sad for Dr Chun. Little did he know that his helpful act to his friend of keeping what he thought was damaging financial records out of the sight of police would lead to his demise...

So far, I'm loving it so much eventho some pointed out about plot holes but since I enjoyed them more than that, I'm happy enough..hehe

I feel bad of course for Dr.Chun, he is my second fave actor after Yoochun in this drama. it such a waste to kill off his character this early but I understand that he is not one of the main leads. well, see you in Orange Marmalade drama then :D

Yeah, I think they somehow have high tolerance for pain. In some variety shows, they like to crack coconut shells (something like that) using the head. Oh, and cracking of hard-boiled eggs with the head too. I tried with the egg, and boy, it really hurts! Ouch.

0

It seems that punishment for losing a game is pretty common in k-dramas, and I've seen it with Junsu and his cousins in Come On Over video and in JYJ fanmeet videos. Is this a common part of Korean culture? I'm much more used to the winner getting something good.

It is very common, not just in kdrama, but also in variety that the losing parties get punished. It's common in Indonesia too, but we usually don't flick harm physically. We do however make the losing party looks physically bad (like putting paste and such things on the face, etc).

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I'm a little confused now. On the night that Cho Rim's parents were killed, did Chef Kwon accidentally kill the wrong Eun Sol? That seems farfetched given his meticulous attention to detail in all other aspects of his life. Is it safe to say that at this point he doesn't know she's still alive?

Also, why would he decide to kill his girlfriend? That seems stupid because he'd definitely be a suspect as the bf. Maybe she found something incriminating that led her to believe he was a serial killer, so he killed her before she could turn him in... But he had an alibi, so he must have a partner... Unless he fabricated his alibi.

Anyway, these questions mean that the show has got me thinking. I'm really enjoying it.

So far, he officially has an alibi. He supposedly return from a week-long stay in the States on the 4th day Joo Mari was reported missing. This means that he left for the States before Joo Mari disappeared and came back after only she was reported missing. And since he left a few days before Mari went missing, it's possible that there's enough time for him to leave the country, come back under another identity, kidnap and lock her in his basement, then leave the country immediately. Then a few days later, Chef Kwon officially returned to Korea, and walah, he finds out that his girlfriend has been missing.

Also, how can he be so completely unaware and uninvolved in how she is spending her time if he's dedicated to protecting her.

I too find Cho Rim's dad conspicuous by his absence. After giving us snippets of him being a concerned parent in the first 2 episodes, he disappears from her life. We need more screen time for more characters and their backstories (Yeom, dad, Chef Kwon) and not too much time spent on the side cases, fun though they are. :)

@Growingbeautifully

Yeah, we need more backstories for Yeom, dad and chef Kwon. The side cases are not doing it for me. I find them simplistic and plain boring sometimes. Now that we have established the who's dunnit, I hope that their characters get more fleshed out. I am especially interested in why dad quit law enforcement.

And of course, Chef Kwon. He reminds me of Ted Bundy, an infamous US serial killer who was intelligent, handsome and charismatic. Till the very end, Bundy had never expressed any remorse toward his victims. Simlarily, I don't believe that Chef Kwon is born evil, so I want to know what turned him into such a cold-blooded monster who enjoy terrorizing other fellow human beings. Lol, it could be DID. Or a painful childhood or something else.

Hi Ivoire, GB, if I may help, DID stands for Dissociative Identity Disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder. The dramas Hyde, Jekyll & Me and Kill Me Heal Me were on this matter.

0

@BedeliaJane

Thanks! :)

0

Hi back BedeliaJane,

And thank you for explaining. I guess I could have googled it, however GB unnie usually answers my questions :-) and she (like you did here), is good at relating the answer to Kdramas. So I thought I would just ask her :-)

0

Hi Ivoire

Woah, me relating the answers to your questions to kdramas!!! Well, since you ask in the context of a drama, I guess that's automatic?

DID in this drama?... not likely at all. Chef Kwon is more a psychopath than a person with DID. Kdrama DID sufferers will be shown to be somewhat different from their 'usual' selves from time to time, when they are taken over by another personality. However Chef is the same almost-too-calm personality throughout. That does not mean he does not have some mental illness/personality disorder, but what it is, is not likely to be DID :)

0

@ GB unnie,

About this, "Woah, me relating the answers to your questions to kdramas!!! Well, since you ask in the context of a drama, I guess that’s automatic?"
I don't know if you noticed, however I was actually giving you a compliment (GB unnie: "Oh really? Oh well, thank you then!" Me: "Yeah GB unnie, that is the part where you say Thank You!") :-)

That being said, to me you are that very good teacher who manages to explain things in such a way that I always understand. If I don't, I come back with more questions, and you have been patient enough to continue to talk about it until I understand, or until someone else jumps in and explains it well also.
In any case, you are patient, and you are good at dissecting dramas, and making the other person see and understand your reasoning process (that is how I have experienced it, so far). You are also good at giving examples to illustrate what you are saying, and that helps a lot. You must have been a great study partner :-)

Watching and dissecting Kdramas here sometimes make me want to go back to school, but then I think about the stress and then I am not too sure :-)

0

HI Ivoire
Yes, I guessed it was a compliment but I failed to thank you for it! LOL! So thank you!! :)

Thanks again LollyPip for rushing this recap and entertaining us, as in "Cho-rim is knocked to the ground in the kerfuffle, and Mu-gak ... picks her up and brushes her off, then leads her to a safe place. All together now… AWWWW." I was LOL.

In the last episode, a couple of us were discussing how MG seems to give CR the wrong things.... wrong sunglasses, wrong bear and this week the box delivered to him had red undies which he did not order!!! Does he never learn to check the gifts before handing them over! LOLOL!

The question is, what DID he order??? Heheheheh! And does anyone think that the red bean cakes he brought for CR, may not be from Insp Kang, but may be another attempt at him trying to give CR something to make up for the wrong bear?

I was thinking that the scene at the organic chicken restaurant was a rather long one. It felt that it took up half the episode so that the barcode murder investigation took a backseat. But at least, they finally got on to the barcodes.

I actually do use barcode readers and read in barcodes from books, etc... it really does not matter which way you hold the barcode, the reader reads the numbers just fine. So I'm wondering what that was about turning the number over? around? Should not be necessary to do that. The scanner can read them upside down ie backwards. Another mistake / plot hole?

So it's another long wait til we find out what happened to poor Doc. At least he was being fed gourmet meals!!! :)

A bar code reader for EAN-13 barcodes can figure out the reading direction on its own, that is true. I didn't check whether the barcode murderer uses fully compliant EAN-13 barcodes on the arm though (including prefix and postfix lines).

When the barcodes were transcribed and digitilised, the direction IS important.
It's still strange that they didn't try both directions, because, well, I'm not entirely sure which the "natural" writing direction for barcodes on your victim's arms would be in the first place. Maybe I'm lacking experience as a barcode serial killer here.

Mu-gak: I swear I don't want to get myself involve again in stuff like this. I know I'm not good at giving the right things to Cho-rim, that's why I'm getting help from the courier company and thought that they will get things right for me for once, but who knows, WRONG AGAIN! *sigh* LOL!

Honestly, Mu-gak's expressions when he passed the box to Cho-rim waiting to be praised by her, is just priceless.

I foresee him proposing to her in the last episode. He hands her a small box. She opens it and says, "what makes you think I'd like this?" He makes the hurt puppy dog face until he leans over and discovers the box contains his dirty underwear.

daebak! I didn't expect they unveil the barcode murderer this early! and I didn't expect the wrong red bra gift scene either hahaha mugak's jealous-proud-shock expression is so precious!

by the way, did I misunderstood or what. when jaehee looks at his victim books, there are 10 books with,7 barcodes. did they hinted that actually the victims are more than the police know? there is book with 00 code, but polices only knows the first victim is the professor with 01 code. I mean 01 professor 02 the fisherman couple 03 mountain climber 04 shaman 05 ju mari 06 dr.chun so.. who is 00?

I thought perhaps the fisherman couple got different barcode. or its an error that has no connection to the story? humm idk. I can't wait for the next eps patiently ._.

mugak is so adorable, I think he is starting getting back his sense, slowly but sure. thanks to chorim. he's not that awkward in society like in first episodes.. murim couple jjang! loveee

A question: now that it's super likely our Chef is the killer, how do we explain Ju Ma Ri's 7-day imprisonment? Chef was away for some days and came back 'pretending' to be concerned over her disappearance. Someone had to have been feeding her before she was killed or at least she must have had water to survive. Or ... does Chef indeed have an accomplice? If he does and the show has not given us a hint of this, I'm going to be bummed.

I was kinda 'meh' on the first episode revealing Dr Chun walking away from the direction of sister Eun-seol's bed with blood on his hands because it looked like such an obvious and early reveal......but yay for it being a red herring, because honestly Namgoong Min makes a REALLY creepy villain. Even creepier because he's so handsome and has such nice manners as Chef Jae Hee. I really hope he's been a little premature on that book and the good doctor isn't actually dead!

And Mu-gak and Cho-rim should always have scenes together. They make a cute couple, and it's not reinventing the wheel but both hold up their end really nicely.

I LOVE this episode! oMg~ you creeeeeepy chef, I knew it, I KNEW IT! You can’t be innocent. Cho-rim, I told you to stay away from this handsome chef, didn’t I? :)

But got to admit though, I didn’t expect the writer to announce the despicable serial killer so soon. I mean, we are only 6 episodes into the series and we’ve got 10 more episodes to go. Hello Mr Writer, are you in your right mind? This is so not normal in a drama series. Normal practice will be, keep viewers guessing for as long as you can, until the final two episodes, maybe? Kudos to writer-nim for breaking the norms, although I’m kind of lost now as to what to expect in the coming episodes, lol.

I love how he’s created two obvious “potential” killers from day one.

And kept viewers guessing; both are killers, no-no only one is or wait a minute, maybe none is because both are too obvious. Maybe, there’s a third person? And ta-da, the answer is ONLY ONE IS. Did you get it right? ;)

I knew from first episode, Dr Chun is definitely not the kidnapper at Cho-rim’s house because he’s big whereas judging by the silhouette of the kidnapper, he looks much smaller. I’m giving myself a pat on the back for getting it right, hahaha.

I’ve enjoyed the lighter side of this episode just as much.
LollyPip: “Hilariously, he orders the wine that’s on special two-for-one — he’s so freaking precious when he’s being petty.”
Couldn’t agree with you more, since when is being petty so precious? Since we met Choi Mu-Gak, lol. He’s so freakin’ adorable when he’s petty like this, omgosh~ his “I’m not here for a meal, I’m here to get even” is too cute.

yeah, I really do think that Cho Rim should become a detective. I mean, she has a god-given talent and I'd say she's smart enough to know not to waste it. As for Mu Gak, he can either stay a detective and form a(n extremely cute) partnership with Cho Rim, become a comedian, or like LollyPip said, go back to doing what he loved in the beginning. Aquamarining? Idk. :)

Told you, Mu-gak is fast. Cho-rim just needs to give him a few dots and he’ll know how to connect the dots :) And I like how he makes sure Chief Kang calls for reinforcements before further actions. Goes to show not all cops are clowns, haha.

My main feeling about his joining the dots is that, fortunately he is right. Imagine is he had been wrong... all those police would have been called in as backup for nothing. He would have had egg all over his face (maybe literally since there are chickens there!! LOLOL!)

They never showed us, so I assumed that they did not even make sure that there were people gambling in that hidden room. A very risky/reckless way to investigate without investigating?? LOL!

Yes, another police procedural lapse that we are kindly overlooking. :)

so did Mu Gak's sister die of the bar code killer or not? I'm sort of confused. His sister had a stab wound on the side of her neck. She didn't have a bar code on her wrist (right?) and was in the middle of a hospital unit. What makes Mu Gak sure that she was the victim of the Bar Code Killer? Unless i missed something.

Also, does this mean that Cho Rim will start being referred to at Eun Sol once she learns the truth about her past? Isn't that weird for Mu Gak, to be romantically involved with a woman who has his sister's name?

And her dad, lying to her about being her dad is weird to me. Like i don't know how that revelation is going to go down and he's made very few appearances lately which is weird considering he's her dad.

So let me get this right, Cho Rim's parents died bc of the Bar Code Killer, but she was a witness, so the BCK wants to kill her as a witness but instead killed Mu Gak's sister, mixing up the names. I'm really surprised that he didn't use a Bar Code on her wrist, even though she's just a loose end. It leads me to believe that he kills specific people, for specific reasons.

0
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

to add on, if he killed Mu Gak's sister simply by stabbing her, without putting a bar code on her just because she was a witness and not an actual victim, then why is creating a book for Baek kyung? He's only killing (or attempting to kill) Baek Kyung because he caught on about his identity as the Bar Code Killer, so Baek Kyung is a witness just like Cho Rim was. So why does Baek Kyung get a bar code and not Muk Gak's sister? They're both witnesses/loose ends

0
8
reply

Required fields are marked *

Maybe because he is able to carve a bar code into Baek Kyung, whereas he was not able to do that with Mu Gak's sister. (Getting her out of the hospital after she was already dead would have been problematic.) I don't know. I'm just guessing.

0

that's a possibility, but wouldn't it be troublesome for someone like the chef, who is a popular face and almost like a celebrity to just enter in a hospital and not be noticed? and if he covered his face it would only look even more suspicious

Required fields are marked *

@ loviet,

you make some good points. At first, I assumed that Chef did not have enough time to make barcode marks on CMG's sister (just time to kill her), but as you pointed out, he is famous (maybe not famous in Jeju island? Which was why he could go to the hospital and kill CMG's sister? Maybe people in Jeju Island did not recognize him). Like the commenter above, I am guessing as well, to be honest. Interesting though that the killer could just get to CMG's sister so easily.

0

Hopefully by the end of the series..we can get the answer to your question...somehow i think that mugak sister's death are not related at all to the barcode case..thats why the way she died is also different and not following the norm..we all think that his sister died from mistakes becoz mugak kinda deduce it that way..but we really doesnt know what is happening either..i hope the scriptwriter can write good reason on her death..

0

Required fields are marked *

@ chunnie
I was saying in Comment 47.1 below, that an unconnected killing of MG's sister will be most upsetting. If the writer does not connect it properly, it takes lazy writing beyond what's acceptable.

If MG's sister died for some other reason than because she was thought to be the witness to the crime against Cho Rim's parents, ie someone else killed her, then it leaves the question of why did the killer of the parents not make sure that Cho Rim died.

Then it opens again the question of why Eun Sol was killed and there's no time given to solving this....meaning MG and we will never get closure!!!!

So the cases had better be related!!! :)

Required fields are marked *

You all have a very good point. I have several possibilities figured out here:

1. If MG's sister is killed by chef - mayb the chef was not famous back then. Hence he was able to go into the hospital for the killing without being recognized. But since it's a hospital, he has to make it quick hence not able to kidnap her then lock her up for 7 days before killing her like other barcode victims. As for the doc, he has all the time to lock him up, like other victims, hence the difference

2. If MG's sister is not killed by chef - chef was not stupid. He track CR all the way to the hospital to find her unconscious, in a coma. He made sure to spy on her to see how she progress. Then found out that she actually lost her memories and therefore left her as she is. Wonder how chef and doc was good friends? He might have been in Jeju island around that time and befriend the doc for an excuse to be able to visit the hospital often for his spying purpose. Which explains why doc eye CR suspiciously during one of the ep and why he offers her a job, to keep her close. And that leads to MG's sister part. What if she was murdered by another serial killer? One that slit throat? Imagine MG found out that his sis is killed in place of CR, can he accept her? Any normal being would find it hard. That would create a conflict in their relationship, only to have a new case appear later, similar killing method like MG's sis. Then they solve the case and found out that it was a different murder after all. And they can live happily ever after.

Let's have faith in the writer for some good and unconvincing revelation.

0

Good and convincing* revelation

Sorry for the typo

0

To add on, the case study on the barcode killer is that he kllls only once a year (as the barcode murderer) if the translations are correct. Hence, killing MG's sister was NOT part of the barcode series, and killing Dr Chun should not be as well. Placing him as one of the barcode victims is not what a psychopath serial klller would do.

I also wonder how he managed to over come Dr Chun and 'kidnap' him as Dr Chun is bigger than him. Knowing that MG was going to the church any time, he would need to knock him out and carry him out asap. I also wonder how he managed to knock out both of CR's parents and carry them out of a small and crowded villlage that they were living in without being seen.

It is also rather far-fetched that the murderer could have chased CR, seen her being knocked down, retreat back to her house, carry both parents to a vehicle undetected by neighbours, drive them back to his house?? with them still unconscious, (they were in Jeju and his house is in Seoul - unless it's some other house in Jeju) find out which hospital CR was warded and then slash MG's sister's throat when she was conscious, before MG came to the hospital. Unless he's someone with super powers or he has an assistant. He also saw CR's face and the extent of her injuries, whereas Eun-seol's injuries were not life-threatening.

I'm enjoying this drama but these questions keep popping up and the inconsistencies and plot-holes prevents me from enjoying it more.

okay but, HOW OLD IS THE CHEF?

Cho Rim was in highschool/middle school when her parents were killed (she was wearing school uniform) assuming that the chef was always the killer, than he was the one to kill her parents.

So how old was he? or how old is Cho Rim now?

I feel like the chef's backstory could be written amazingly well, giving him so much character depth but it depends on the writers.

I pray they don't just write him off as someone who's insane and just likes murder. I hope he has some sort of past or vendetta that's leading him to kill all those ppl including Ma Ri

This ep aggravated me to no end due to Dr. Chun's failure to contact the authorities when he was lucky enough to get away from the Chef. He had a window and he blew it. It just makes no sense whatsoever that he wasn't on the phone with police while driving away. Really bad writing. I was truly hoping when the doctor was in the church, that he was in the middle of a sting operation that would allow the police to capture Dr. Chun. It obviously didn't happen. What i don't understand is , how does the chef not know she is the witness? or does he? When she walked in on him kidknapping her parents, he actually went closeup, told her to shush and then stroked her hair and chin before trying to chocke her. I remember it well because that scene made it almost "intimite" almost like a lover caressing his loved one. So how could he not remember her face? Not in the hospital, because he killed the wrong girl and not here too? Unless the killer is someone else and Cheff is the accomplice? does he have some deranged family member locked up in the basement, like an evil twin, that he let's out once a year? The killer is the one Cho Rim met and he called chef to kill off a girl in hospital called Cho Rim while he continued to move the bodies? Hence why he killed the wrong person?

I'm sure he does recognize her. My theory is that he's "grooming" her the way some serial killers do with their victims. For next year's victim. Which is why he's hiring her, getting close to her etc.

If he "grooms" his victims or befriends them before kidnapping them and then kill them, then how does it explain what happened to CR's parents? He certainly didn't befriend them enough to know that their daughter was coming home from school. And he definitely didn't lure them to his house to kidnap them. He got them unconscious first. And if he only kills a barcode victim once a year, then Dr Chun's murder is a break from his usual pattern.

I wish that sequence at the beginning was real not a dream.

I'm not sure I believe Jae-hee could overpower Baek-kyung without a weapon of some kind. Maybe the fear just drew all Baek-kyung's strength from him.

I don't blame Baek-kyung for wishing Cho-rim would die, I'm sure many people who have had a loved one who needed a transplant, while watching their loved one suffer, have wished someone would die. It's not acting on that, that separates us from psychopaths.

As for Jae-hee he seems to be a psychopath so there might not necessarily be a motive,at least not one we would understand.

Assuming she keeps her awesome ability to see smells Cho-rim and Mu-gak should change professions at the end.

I have a question we know that Cho-rim can see smells but can she still smell smells?

Baek-kyung was great in this episode! Totally thought he was an accomplice until now, partially because of his odd expressions - when you pair him with the chef and BOTH of them are doing that weird expressionless thing, it makes you wonder... But then him starting to break down in the car made it clear that he's just a remarkably cerebral person who doesn't show emotion unless it's strong. That was great!

His reactions are also pretty on-target; he seems to process new information before truly reacting, so he's on a bit of a time-delay. Mooguk attacks him and he only shows shock later, when he's really connected the dots. When he finds the book, his initial reaction is to just continue on like he would have anyhow. And then at the church, again, it's like he just didn't have enough time to form a new action plan once the chef appeared, so he just kept on with the original plan of pretending everything was fine... And then decided to run far too late.

And it also now makes sense why he'd be looking at Cho Rim with such a dark expression: both intently interested in her and berating himself for almost ending her life. He WAS thinking horrible things, they're just past-things, not future harm.

Anyhow - excellent work, guy who plays Baek-kyun! This show may have plot holes, but that characterization was actually very consistent.

I so agree with you! The name to remember is Song Jong Ho (born 1976).

Good for Song Jong Ho and his curiously ambiguous neutral expression!

but there still has to be a second killer involved, right? bc we know from episode 1 that the killer saw Eun-Seol's face when he choked her---which made me wonder why he took her name tag. perhaps to give it to his partner the chef to finish the job? one person to first find the people then the chef does the rest?

He took her nametag coz it's easier to identify someone by the name in the hospital rather than to go round looking at each face lying on all the beds. And my guess is he probably didnt even see Moo Gak's sister face before he killed her, since she was lying on her side with her face facing the other direction. So he identified by the name and quickly sliced her throat. You cant spend too much time killing off someone in a hospital with so many people around, gotta do it fast man.

List of baddies in this drama:
1} Jae Hee
2} Jae Hee's dog
Yeah, the dog too. This is a murder case yo, we can't rule the dog out.

And Jae Hee's motives? How about he's just a sociopath-on-the-lose. There is no other reason. He's just batshit crazy and loves killing people. So writer-nim should not come and tell me he's on a killing spree because one of his victim killed his parent or bird when he was child. Everything still comes down to the fact that He is a just craaaaaaaaaay!

And really Dr Chun, you don't have a cell phone? How about I shove one down your throat now. Oops! Sorry, you are probably dead now. Why? Because you dint have a cell phone. Important life lesson right here guys, never go out without your cell phone. Lol!!

Ok that seriously creeped me out. Why did the chef have to associate it with books? On a side note how awesome is his library?I stopped for a moment to admire it before being scared.

Anyway I love the OTP. Mickey is adorable and SSK is winning here.

Oh man they really got me with the drama poster. It's totally setup with Yeom and Jae Hee in the background like they are the other legs of the love triangle. Like all other drama posters ever!

I would really love to find out why he does what he does. There is always a reason and a reason for how they do it. It makes sense to them but I hope the writers make it make sense to the audience. Maybe I'm spoiled by Dexter and Hannibal. I feel a need to know and some dramas just make the bad guys into monsters with no substance. They are just killing. No reason.

I totally agree with the whole barcode thing. Lazy. I mean the first thing would be to look at the barcode in every possible way to understand it's meaning to the victim and for the killer. Its the first steps into figuring him out.

Agreed, the bar code "revelation" is dumb. I was hoping they were related to real objects, not books made up by the killer. Either that or they're NOT remotely related to the real world, but proved to have some sort of meaning to the killer. That entire explanation feels like there's something big missing.

I also have to note that to create these codes he's not just slicing into their wrists, he has to be removing skin. Blech.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

Park Yoo Chun & Shin Se Kyung continue to impress me with their onscreen rapport & chemistry. Cho-rim & Mu-Gak are a pleasure to watch — so cute together — and they make a great sleuthing team. Who knows how many viewers smile for days on end just because of their cuteness factor?

Yes please to a tighter narrative with less plot holes & faulty logic. Also, without adversely affecting and compromising on the rom-com aspects of the show; more cohesiveness and a better balancing of the mystery/crime genre aspects within the drama.

Maybe as the episodes progress there will continue to be a shift in the supporting players (i.e. the background ensemble) Detectives Ki, Yeh, and Chief Kang. From incompetent policemen/spectator cops to more along the lines of professionals showcasing powers of observation; comprehension of verbal and non-verbal cues; responsiveness to these cues in the most appropriate/advantageous way; and the ability to draw logical and reasonable conclusions to solve a case without having to always rely on the aide of Cho-rim & Mu-Gak.

**SPOILERS**

I'm reading the webtoon that this drama is basing off of. In the comic, the killer doesn't cut barcodes into the victim's wrist but is instead called the "Collector" for hiding the victim in an underground sewage storage and giving the victim 3-6 days to write their whole life of events into a book. When the person is done writing, or if the killer gets bored by the victim's stories (he sometimes checks on the victim's writing and even commands them to glorify their stories/use exquisite adjectives for extreme description) then he simply ends their life. The "Collector" basically gets an emotional release from collecting books of other people's lives and relives the stories in his mind because his life was a mess from the beginning, with problems such as a broken parent-child relationship, homelessness, and lack of human social interaction/warmth/love.

The barcode killer/chef has a different character background and history from the killer in the comic- he's rich, well-known for his amazing culinary skills and career, has a great house to live in, so it's strange that he has a problem with interacting and dealing with other people. i'm going to guess that his killer motives come from the influence of his family or past friends (?) but his intentions and process of killing are most likely the same as the "Collector", as the chef also captures his victims, hides them in a secret shelter, and collects freshly written books from his victims after he kills them.

One horrifying note I need to mention is how the chef always cooks two meals, one for himself and one for his victim. He probably treats his victims with food, water, a bed (like a guest house owner) during the first few days but only for the purpose of making them write well according to his orders.

I wish someone could translate the webtoon because the webtoon is amazing!!

Thanks @plainsight This is one spoiler that I needed to read.

I was thinking we need a lot more backstory of our Chef Kwon to understand if the ISBN barcodes actually do make sense for him. He has been a flat and creepy character only, so far.

It will also be good at this stage to give us a proper hint of whether there's just him or an accomplice, because the murder of MG's sister cannot be explained, except if it was an unrelated crime. How to comprehend that the Chef who clearly saw and touched Eun Sol could mistake her in the hospital?

This will probably annoy some of us no end, because the murder of Cho Rim's parents and the murder of MG's sister have been portrayed as somehow linked. Unlike real life, we need a kdrama show to bring together the elements it introduces. If after hinting that those elements are connected, the show suddenly u-turns to say that it was just a coincidence and there's no connection, I will be upset. :)

Also, if there's an accomplice, we need to be given some indication early and have him fleshed out a bit. Introducing such an important player into the story at the end will also be most upsetting!

It's probably good that they made the character a bit different because it definitely gave the drama an element of surprise that probably would have been missing for watcher's who are familiar with the webtoon. Still, I do hope that when they reveal more of Chef Jae-hee's background, it will be as deep and interesting as the serial killer's from the webtoon.

Hopefully the drama and it's popularity will lead to the webtoon eventually getting translated? I would love to read it.

i always found it creepy that Jahee would always say "we should have dinner" "we should have lunch" "you should come over to eat"

He always talks about wanting to have a meal with with Mu Gak, Cho Rim or Baek Kyung.

I thought the writing was getting sloppy in this episode, but our main couple's chemistry and the overall humor and fun spirit of the show rescues it.

Besides plotholes, the production team also doesn't seem to care much about continuity. E.g., MG wore different sweaters at the start of the ep. The one he wore at the soju place had white stripes at the arms, but the one when he was sleeping on her lap was plain.

@BedeliaJane

Actually you still are not wrong ... I mentioned the editing in one of the previous episodes. He was wearing sweater 1, then shown wearing sweater 2 and suddenly in time soon after, back to sweater 1. So they do mess up on the clothes and sequence. Feels as if they have no time to re-shoot the scenes so they make do with what was shot earlier and move around the bits for a new sequence. :)
