Girl Who Sees Smells: Episode 2
by LollyPip
Cho-rim and Mu-gak team up to help each other, and thankfully they make a team that’s as adorable as it is mutually beneficial — even if only one of the pair is happy about it. But with a murderer on the loose, they’ll have to share confidences and learn to work together as they go after the bad guy and dig into his background.
EPISODE 2 RECAP
Mu-gak and Cho-rim exchange information and go their separate ways, but Cho-rim is stopped by a woman who recognizes her as her old classmate. Hearing the name “Eun-seul” triggers a memory for Mu-gak, when his sister — also named Eun-seul — had visited him at his workplace (he was apparently some sort of marine biologist, and she finds him in full scuba gear in a large indoor aquarium).
Eun-seul flashes a school award she’s earned, and Mu-gak rewards her achievement with an underwater arm-heart and a double thumbs up. So cute. He comes out to give her a giant hug and say how proud he is, calling her “my baby” and making her cringe at his over-the-top silliness. But they’re all each other has in the world, and he insists that makes her his baby.
This is a very different Mu-gak than the one we met previously, free with the smiles and aegyo and very affectionate with his sister. It hurts my heart to see the contrast between this man and the stoic, emotionless Mu-gak we know — to see exactly how much he lost when his sister was killed.
But I feel like it’s not so much that he can’t feel emotions, as that he won’t, as he seems to try his best in the present to tamp down his reaction to hearing his sister’s name. Mu-gak gives Cho-rim a long searching look, and asks her name.
She gives him the only name she knows, Cho-rim, and even writes it down for him next to her number. Mu-gak thought he heard the name “Choi Eun-eul,” but Cho-rim says the woman was mistaken. She leaves, and Mu-gak watches her go with an unidentifiable expression that just tears me up.
At home Mu-gak remembers finding his sister dead in the hospital, throat slashed, and his face goes hard. He vows to find Eun-seul’s murderer and kill him with his bare hands.
At the station, Mu-gak can’t win for losing, and today he catches flak from Detectives Ki and Yeh for actually catching the criminal this time. He says he’s just here to see the chief, and another officer (played by Choi Jae-hwan) seems a bit more friendly and tells him to go on in.
The chief reminds Mu-gak of his vow to break Mu-gak’s legs if he interfered again via several sharp kicks to the shin, which Mu-gak clearly doesn’t feel. The chief isn’t thrilled that Mu-gak is asking for a promotion again, but surprisingly, he agrees to give him ten days to catch a particular criminal. If he can, he’ll make him a detective. But if he can’t catch the guy, he’s never allowed to ask for a promotion again.
Cho-rim returns the beat-up car to the Frog Troupe’s lead actress, who tells her to get everything fixed like new or else. The director isn’t happy to see Cho-rim heading for a mechanic instead of rehearsing for the audition, and wonders about her partner. Cho-rim fibs that she has a partner, he’s just not in the troupe, and the director tells her to bring the guy for him to check out tomorrow. Whoops.
Cho-rim texts Mu-gak to discuss his promise to pay for the car repairs, and she has a sudden epiphany. She remembers the sauna locker room, where a patron had looked a bit too closely at her and nearly blown her cover. Mu-gak had suddenly become very animated, pretending to be recognizing her as an old friend and even throwing a hilarious satoori on for good measure.
Cho-rim thinks that he’s a pretty good actor, and starts concocting a plan. She texts Mu-gak several times, but he’s focused on what he needs to do to become a detective (so he can get access to Eun-seul’s case file) and ignores her as he eats. Oh man, how does he eat so much at one sitting!? That’s truly nauseating.
He finally responds when Cho-rim threatens to report him for a hit-and-run, and meets her at the same coffee shop. His “I’m-a-badass-cop” entrance is ruined when he hits a patch of wet floor, and he nearly bites it. PFFT. This just convinces Cho-rim that he’s capable of slapstick too, and she grins to herself at her good luck.
She’s so excited that she accidentally lets slip that he must have taken so long to come because he was busy eating a huge meal, since she can see all the different scents of his meal coming off his clothes. She offers Mu-gak a way out of paying for the car repairs — she’ll pay for the car if he’ll do her audition skit with her. Yeah, I don’t blame Mu-gak for that side-eye, because Cho-rim makes an impromptu joke, and she’s awful.
Mu-gak isn’t interested so Cho-rim resorts to begging, which just makes him angry. Cho-rim gets angry right back when he makes fun of her dream to be a comedian, and she storms out of the coffee shop. On her way out she gets a text from Mu-gak, which he’d intended to go to the chief, saying how the case he’s been given is too difficult.
This gives Cho-rim another idea, so she goes back to ask about the difficult case and offer to help. Her offer is too sweet for Mu-gak to refuse — she helps him with his case, and he helps her with her skit. Win-win.
A man gets off an airplane and makes a call, looking for a woman named Ma-ri — this is KWON JAE-HEE (Namgoong Min), a well-known chef. He’s worried that Ma-ri still hasn’t been heard from, and says he’ll call the person on the other line later.
Mu-gak asks Cho-rim how she knew where to find the criminal in the sauna, and how she knew exactly what he had to eat for lunch. He gets riiight up in her face, making her a bit flustered, though she doesn’t seem to mind (can you blame her?). She gets in his face right back, and whispers that she can tell things by smell. This time Mu-gak notices how close their faces are, and gets adorably squirmy.
Cho-rim brags that her nose is better than a police dog’s, so Mu-gak decides to test her — he goes out and hides, challenging her to find him after five minutes. She notices his shoes trailing the caramel macchiato he slipped in, and easily follows the visible (to her) trail as it winds around the courtyard outside. Mu-gak watches from atop a building, mystified at how she follows his exact path.
HAHA, Mu-gak tries to duck when Cho-rim looks up and sees him, and his well-meaning “You’re just like a dog!” falls flat. Wow, he’s got no game at all. He asks how she followed his scent without smelling anything, and Cho-rim decides to trust him. She tells him it’s not her nose that can follow a scent trail, but her eyes.
Mu-gak is understandably skeptical, so Cho-rim consents to a series of tests where Mu-gak hides a mint under a cup, and she picks the right cup (with her nose plugged) every time. When he makes her do it from the other side of the window, Cho-rim still finds the mint — even when he hides it in his mouth. Cute. He’s forced to admit that her claim to see scents must be true.
Cho-rim gives Mu-gak her skit notes, giving him homework to have the man’s part memorized by the next morning. She notices his sudden drop to banmal, and Mu-gak says he’s more comfortable speaking informally with people he works with.
After Cho-rim boards her bus, Mu-gak takes a mint out and tries to get a whiff, though he obviously can’t smell anything. When she pops back up next to him he hilariously pretends he was just stretching. She asks him to keep her unique ability a secret, and he agrees.
We see a beautiful woman (cameo by Park Han-byul), who finds herself in a sterile, stark room with only one door, which is locked. The room is set up with multiple video cameras and a television, and has bathroom facilities and a bed, but little else. She beats against the door and screams for someone to save her, but there’s no answer.
Another woman drives to the police station for a meeting, nearly hitting Mu-gak as he runs across the street. This is Lieutenant YEOM-MI (Yoon Jin-seo), here to brief the detectives on a pair of missing person cases, one of whom is the woman in the locked room. She is now identified as model Joo Ma-ri (I’m guessing this is the same missing Ma-ri that the chef was worried about), and she’s been missing for four days.
The chief gives the lieutenant some attitude, saying there are people missing like this every day, but she tells him that these cases are special. She believes them to be connected to a series of murders that have happened roughly once a year for the past four years, and we see that Cho-rim’s parents are among his victims.
There seems to be nothing that the victims have in common, other than the murderer’s method of operation. They all started out as missing persons, and were all discovered dead on the seventh day. Interestingly, they were all kept alive for six days and strangled the day before their bodies were found, and they all had a strange pattern of cuts on their left wrists that resemble barcodes.
The two currently missing people interest the lieutenant because their jobs and ages are very different than the previous victims — they’re much younger than the murderer’s preferred victims.
Mu-gak raises his hand to ask if the barcode cuts are actual usable barcodes, and strangely, nobody seems to have thought of this before. The Chief orders Mu-gak removed from the room and confronts him in his office. Mu-gak insists the case he was given to solve is too difficult, and offers to find the missing model Joo Ma-ri instead.
The friendly detective brings Ma-ri’s call records, noticing that she made a lot of calls to a certain hospital just before disappearing. He asks to bring Mu-gak with him to investigate, and the chief relents after warning Mu-gak not to do anything crazy.
The hospital that Ma-ri called turns out to be the same place that Mu-gak went with Cho-rim, which is also coincidentally in the same building as Chef Jae-hee’s restaurant. The receptionist confirms that the number Ma-ri was calling was the office of Dr. Chun Baek-kyung.
The photo behind the desk shows that he’s the same doctor Mu-gak saw in the hospital the night his sister was killed, though Mu-gak doesn’t recognize him. The doctor is on vacation and strangely, he doesn’t own a cell phone, but the receptionist does recognize Ma-ri’s photo as a patient of his.
Cho-rim busily passes out flyers for Frog Troupe’s show tonight, unaware that she’s being watched from inside the coffee shop. Dr. Chun, who is supposedly on vacation, is right here in Seoul and studying Cho-rim with a look of creepy intensity.
Later Cho-rim meets with Mu-gak at Ma-ri’s apartment building and they meet with Ma-ri’s roommates, and ask for some of her favorite clothes so that Cho-rim can see her scent. She notes that Ma-ri’s perfume is unusual, and is in fact custom-made by Ma-ri herself, which will make it easy to identify.
Next they head to Ma-ri’s agency building where she was last seen, and on the way Cho-rim asks Mu-gak which skit he chose to perform. Hee, he chose the one that was shortest, but Cho-rim is delighted that it’s also the funniest. He tells her to focus on the case for now, and on the way into the building they pass by Chef Jae-hee on his way out.
Cho-rim whirls around, having seen Ma-ri’s personal perfume pretty much all over Jae-hee, and without warning Mu-gak flings Jae-hee to the ground and demands to know what he did with Ma-ri. Of course now is when Cho-rim recognizes him as a famous chef.
Detectives Ki and Yeh have been checking out Ma-ri’s agency too, and they come out to see Mu-gak with Jae-hee on the ground and rush to shove Mu-gak off the poor man and help him up. Mu-gak insists this guy is involved with Ma-ri somehow, but Detective Ki says of course he’s involved — he’s her boyfriend. I’m so embarrassed for you right now.
Strangely, Jae-hee barely reacts to any of this… not to Mu-gak throwing him to the ground, or the detectives helping him up, and he just stares at the ground and barely nods when Mu-gak apologizes. He does wonder how Mu-gak knew he was associated with the missing girl. Reminded of Cho-rim, Mu-gak looks around for her, but she’s gone.
He finds her at the theater, and tells Cho-rim that Ma-ri and her agent had an argument and he assumed that’s why she went off the grid. Cho-rim just wants to practice since they only have an hour before they have to show the skit to the director, and she freaks out to see that Mu-gak tore the script from her book (his almost-whiny, “Then you should have told me not to rip it,” is freaking precious).
They stand nervously in front of the director, and Cho-rim nudges Mu-gak to start. Suddenly it’s like a switch flips inside him and he lights up, and he’s incredible. He’s brilliant, in fact, and the director stops them to ask who he is.
HAHA, Mu-gak’s snap back to bland and monotone is almost as funny as his outrageous acting. The director says that he approves Cho-rim’s partner, but warns her that if this is their skit, they’ll come in last. She promises to do better and the director leaves, giggling at Mu-gak’s straight man “act.” I love how Cho-rim tells him to be more serious… is that even possible? But Mu-gak is thinking about the case again, and wonders why Ma-ri was keeping her boyfriend a secret.
It’s the seventh day after Ma-ri went missing (the day that the killer’s victims are always found). A young couple drives down a secluded road, and the man leans over for a kiss. He gets distracted from the road, and hits a car that was parked next to a guard rail, shoving it down the side of the hill.
The next day Lieutenant Yeom-mi reminds the chief that the killer’s victims are always found dead seven days after disappearing, yet this is Day Eight and they haven’t found Ma-ri’s body. Since this no longer seems to be related to the same murderer, her team will be dropping the case.
But Detective Yeh tells the chief that Ma-ri’s credit card was just used at a motel, and he and Detective Ki rush off to catch whoever used the card. They pass by Mu-gak on the way out, who sneaks into their car while they decide who drives. (Also, that scene was done in one shot, and I swear you can’t see Mu-gak get in the car!)
They nab the man who used the credit card, and Mu-gak handcuffs himself to the guy and literally drags him to the cop car. They find Ma-ri’s card in the man’s wallet, but he swears he just found it on the street.
He leads them to where he found the card under a tree, and they find her wallet still there. Detective Ki bags the wallet and charges Mu-gak with taking it back to the station for evidence processing. Instead, he takes it straight to Cho-rim, who quickly identifies the scents on the wallet — leather, water, and dog. She says it seems to smell of fresh water like from a lake or river, and Mu-gak remembers a dog was chained near where the wallet was found.
He runs to the station where the chief is holding a briefing, now that they’re in charge and handling it as a kidnapping. Mu-gak interrupts to tell the chief that they’re looking in the wrong place and should be checking the river. He says the wallet was soaked in river water, and the dog who lives where it was found must have carried it there.
The cops all snicker and the chief shushes them, then loses his temper and lunges. It takes three guys to keep him from attacking Mu-gak, and he orders him never to come near his department again. Poor Mu-gak looks baffled, but he leaves after shooting a salute.
Cho-rim eats with her theater sunbae (whose name turns out to be Woo-ya), who sneers at her for picking some guy off the street for a partner. Woo-ya pulls out an identical wallet to the one Ma-ri lost, and tells Cho-rim that it looks like leather but it’s actually fake.
But Cho-rim definitely saw the scent of leather on Ma-ri’s wallet, so she calls Mu-gak to frantically tell him they have to find the source of the leather scent. They learn that a leather factory’s wastewater treatment machine broke down recently and flowed into the river, where the wallet must have soaked up the leather scent along with the river water. Bingo.
Mu-gak leads Cho-rim as they walk along the river, looking for any sign of Ma-ri. Soon Cho-rim is gasping for breath while Mu-gak seems fresh as a daisy, but he insists they have to find something on their own or the other policemen will never believe him. Cho-rim complains that this is too hard, but Mu-gak counters, “Then have you found a new skit partner?” That’s low, dude.
Mu-gak notices broken tail-light pieces in the road and wonders if an accident happened here recently. He calls the whining Cho-rim over to take a look, and she immediately fixates on something. In a haunted voice, Cho-rim says that Ma-ri’s unique perfume scent is on the road just behind him, and the two of them stare down the hill to the river in stunned silence.
COMMENTS
One of the things I really appreciate in a drama is when they don’t drag secrets or plot points out needlessly, and I’m so pleased that Girl Who Sees Smells is getting right to the point, right away. Mu-gak found out Cho-rim’s secret pretty quickly, and they’re already working together to find a killer — though neither of them knows yet that it’s the same killer who altered their own lives four years ago. Mu-gak is still holding onto his own secret that he can’t feel, smell, or taste anything, but I have a feeling he won’t be able to hide that from the super-observant Cho-rim for long. Heck, one meal with him will clue her in that this guy is not in any way normal.
I mentioned their individual acting abilities in my first recap, and I’m thrilled to see that together, they’re even better. The chemistry between Park Yoochun and Shin Se-kyung is perfect so far, even before it gets into romantic territory. Mu-gak and Cho-rim’s personalities play off each other in a way that enhances their differences, yet softens the sharp edges in them both. Cho-rim is a bit more grounded when she’s around Mu-gak, and he’s being pushed out of his comfort zone in regards to getting close to people, since he has to let her close, in order to use her ability to get the promotion he wants. I love the little moments of humor between them, like when Cho-rim tells Mu-gak to be more serious or when Mu-gak tries to compliment her and totally flubs it. I even bought the one tiny moment where they each seemed to become aware of the other as an attractive person of the opposite sex — and I don’t even feel it’s too soon in the story. At this point, it wasn’t anything other than physical awareness, nothing more than “Hey, this good-looking man/woman sure is close to my face right now.” Which, I mean, LOOK at them both. If they didn’t notice the other is highly attractive, I’d call shenanigans on that so fast.
As to our main plotline involving the murderer, I’m impressed with a lot of the observations that you readers made in the Episode 1 Recap comments. I think it’s a sign of a compelling story that so early on, there are so many speculations and theories flying, and I found myself thinking a lot about the theory that Dr. Chun may not be working alone. I’m pretty sure he’s the one who killed Eun-seol in the hospital, but what if he wasn’t the same person that chased Cho-rim that night? What if two people are working together, and that’s why Dr. Chun accidentally killed the wrong girl? Not to mention, the Barcode Murderer seems to prefer kidnapping and strangulation, yet Eun-seol’s throat was slashed.
And there are so many other inconsistencies, such as how in the present, he’s apparently still in Seoul when he’s supposed to be on vacation. And who doesn’t carry a cell phone in this day and age, especially a doctor!? Lots of interesting things to think about when it comes to this guy. And I certainly think that Chef Jae-hee also seems to be a shady character. His restaurant is in the same building as Dr. Chun’s practice, and his reaction to being basically assaulted for no reason by Mu-gak was definitely not normal. He didn’t even seem to care. At this point I can see the plot taking us in a lot of different twisty directions and honestly? I’m up for any of them.
One last thing I didn’t mention before — the CGI of the scents that Cho-rim sees. I’ve seen a lot of really bad CGI in dramas, and I also (along with many of you, it seems) worried that it would come across looking cheesy or dumb. I’m delighted that not only do the scents not look stupid, but they’re actually quite beautiful. I love how they not only involve colors but also shapes, making the scents easy for us as viewers to identify right along with Cho-rim. The little touches like the dog scent appearing as paws, or the mint manifesting as silver snowflakes, are quite lovely and vivid. I’ve noticed a lot of attention to detail (like how Park Yoochun never forgot to let his “injured” arm swing awkwardly in the mall chase scene, or Shin Se-kyung walking carefully around the spot where the coffee was spilled even after it was cleaned up) that make me appreciate that this show won’t be sloppy or make mistakes in it’s storytelling. So when something seems “off,” like how the killer could have killed the wrong girl after being so close to her face just a short while before, I trust that it’s not an oversight and that there will be an explanation, if I’m willing to trust and give the show a chance.

I agree, I'm hooked too! I haven't watched many dramas lately (I think the last one I watched was Liar Game!) and this drama is completely reviving my love for Korean dramas.

I think it's part of the greatness and appeal of the show that it sends us viewers speculating and theorizing on a lot of things. Right now, I can only wait for the development, and I do hope that this show be consistently awesome until the end. I have come to love it in the first two episodes and I don't want to be disappointed because I love everything about it.
Your comments are very insightful. I didn't realize until now that the Shin Se-kyung's simplest tiptoeing around the coffee, or Park Yoochun'a holdimf his arms awkwardly could strengthen (and consistently justify) the scenes that follow from it. Thanks, Lollypip! You're awesome :-)

I had to watch that scene again where Mu-gak somehow got into the back of the police car. I didn't pay much attention to that scene until Lollypip pointed it out. That was some pretty good timing. I barely saw the rear driver side door open when the two cops crossed each other in front of the police car.

Hi @ KDaddict?JCW
Good to see you here! Hope you've been fine.
I too liked PYC for all the cute in Rooftop Prince. Here he brings in a different feel from when he was in I Miss You, even though in that story, he too was a detective out to locate a missing person. He is definitely better here: even with a deadpan expression, he is able to project that he is thinking and feeling a lot more than he shows.
SSK too is showing more sides of her than I've noticed before and definitely displays more expressions which are appropriate and funny. They could be a little more subtle, but she is actually great here. :)

I think normally if you were to kill someone or you were a hit man you would wear dark clothing in case blood got onto you, which would draw the attention of people around you to you. So they probably chose to wear black as it was the darkest shade/color rather than black sneakers being just a fashion item :))

The New Balance sneakers are probably just trendy there, is all.
It makes sense considering how they were all over Tokyo last summer, and even used pairs going for quite a bit of money.

It doesn't make sense for Dr Chun to not have recognized the correct Choi Eun Seul at the Emergency Ward when he would have seen her face clearly from the time she entered her house and also having seen her lying on the street after being hit.
The mistaken killing of Mu-Gak's Eun Seul suggests that Dr Chun had recognized a name and not the actual person.
That doesn't explain why Dr Chun was shocked to see / recognize Cho-Rim at the hospital with Mu-Gak unless he was the actual killer who murdered her parents.
One killer or two? I can't wait to see what happens!!!

The murdered Choi Eun Seul was lying on her side, facing away from where her brother came in, which seemed to be the way the staff would enter the curtained off area. The amount of blood pooled on that side, plus the fact that no blood was on any other part of the pristine sheets, as well as the cut itself, all lends to the assumption that the killer was behind her. He didn't look at her face, but saw the name and probably the school uniform, read the chart about a head injury due to auto accident, and most likely assumed she was the Choi Eun Seul who got away. It was a bazaar set of circumstances; who would have thought two girls, same age, similar stature, would both be injured in auto accidents on the same night, and (I'm guessing) would be transported to the same hospital? I would imagine it was only later, after the murder was reported and the killer saw the images, that he realized he'd killed the wrong girl. By that time, of course, she was being guarded, and had perhaps even been registered at another hospital under an assumed name for her protection. At least, that's my very humble opinion. lol

Forgot to add: I love the idea of two killers, though. It's so intriguing! But I don't know if I could take the emotional upheaval of catching one, and then realizing there was another one out there, waiting to kill our heroine! ;)

Omg Yoo Chun at that gag audition was my favorite part of this whole episode!! He was hilarious!!
I agree, the pace of the plot is awesome - its quick enough so it doesn't feel draggy and yet not too fast so we have time to speculate our theories about the Bar Code murders.
Hoping this show stays strong till the end!

Park Yoo Chun has improved a lot. He was hilarious in the Green Light scene. Thanks for the recap, I agree with everything you said especially when you pointed out that the inconsistencies are building plot lines for later. But here's one I don't get: why is Mugak still so gorgeously fit despite his diet.

Yay, another recap! And I'd just finished rewatching this episode too. I'm always wary about loving a drama only after two episodes, but I've got to admit that I'm already pretty obsessed. T__T It took all my willpower not to watch the preview for Episode 3 and spoil myself LOL.
And I agree, I LOVE how fast-paced this drama is. It doesn't linger on secrets that don't need to be hidden, and wasted no time in having the two leads meet and start working together. Asadkfblks I'm so excited to see how this romance is going to unfold!! And then when you add in a murder mystery and all the comedy - if the show can keep this up, I am sooo sold.

Thanks for recapping. This episode cemented my love for this drama, it may just be my new crack after KMHM left such a huge void. I loved the brilliant comedic timing most of all and the fast paced nature of it. Can't wait for this weeks episodes.

Thanks a whole bunch Lollypip! I agree with all you've said about this episode.
Parts of this episode/show that I like:
- The upbeat music which stops suddenly when something funny happens, such good time stands still pauses while onlookers take a moment to react.
- The many different pieces of music and the transition from one to another without any jarring note.
- SSK and PYC not afraid of being ridiculous. SSK turning around with peg on her nose and a serious businesslike expression was wonderful!
- The intelligence of the characters. Choi asked a pertinent question – whether the barcode could be read/used in RL? Something that even struck the expert as something that should have been looked into but wasn't. And Cho Rim, being quick to catch on about what the lack of leather in the wallet meant.
- Interesting visual effects quietly included like the 'outstretched leg' sculptures in the park in which they rehearsed. The camera moved so that it looked like the sculpture was part of their legs, and leaning back on the bench, Cho Rim looked like she was going to fall backward.
- The most unexpected but incredible funny bits! Like Choi's totally deadpan expression when he slid unseen into the police car and gave the cops a fright.
- As Lollypip mentioned in an earlier recap - the normalcy in what should be a really weird show... such as the seamless and very plausible way that 2 strangers could end up partners, or how Cho Rim discovered that the leather smell was not from the wallet itself.
- The visual play of contrasts such as the big difference between the crowd of policemen scouring the mountains and only 2 of them tackling the long road. And how so many eyes could not see anything relevant since there was nothing to see, whereas one pair of eyes could see what cannot be seen.
My favourite scenes – the coffee shop scenes with Cho Rim proving that she can see smells, and the skit where Choi sheds his deadness so completely and took in the director who thought he was dumb!!! LOL!

I'm definitely enjoying this show and the actors. I know people are suspecting namgoong but I imagined he was sort of in a state of shock...your gf is missing and probably with a serial killer? I'd be pretty numb. But they're also clearly throwing some suspicion his way - he's in the same building and his gf was trying to keep him a secret.
I think I'm the only one who doesn't get gag humor. It just doesn't translate well for me. I hope they don't spend too much time on that storyline.
I'm curious what the barcodes mean.

I actually didn't get the gag humor AT ALL either. Yes, YooChun character was funny, in that he's completely different than his daily life...but I don't get the green light at all...I kept on asking myself, "and this is funny because...? where's the punch line?"

I believe the term "green light" is used to represent a girl showing interest in a guy romantically, as in she's giving you the "green light" to pursue her. The joke is that the situations where Mu-gak's character thought were "green lights" were actually just normal situations.

I understood it, it just doesn't come off funny to me. But I think some things just have to be in your language. It's probably along the lines of "Who's on first?" which you can have explained to you but half of the humor is understanding the delivery of the lines and having certain things built into your mind as being especially humorous...so cultural.

Have you ever seen Gag Concert, if not then I can see why you don't get it. They do a lot of gag humor on there, but I think it's a Korean comedy thing. Not everything translates well into other cultures/languages & I think this may be one of them.
It will be part of the story line since that's Cho Rim's job, we'll probably see a lot of it.

I know what was happening it's just I think a cultural block for me (not that think it would be a block for everyone here), but it just doesn't make me laugh or even chuckle. On the other hand the show itself has made me smile and laugh all on its own.
I know it's her job but plenty of character have been given jobs that we rarely see or get dropped. Wishful thinking my part I'm sure.

The gag humor doesn't translate very well, but at the same time, I think that it isn't supposed to be very funny; the director told Cho Rim to start writing funnier material, and she's just not that great at her job yet.

I thought it looked like he could not smell the mint even when it was by his nose. And couldn't his insatiable hunger (amount of different foods he eats) be because he can't taste anything?
I know just being able to taste something quenches my desire. If I felt like (for instance) brown sauce noodles, but couldn't taste them, wouldn't I maybe keep eating them in a vain attempt to be filled?

Thank you @LollyPip for the wonderful recap.
“This is a very different Mu-gak than the one we met previously, free with the smiles and aegyo and very affectionate with his sister. It hurts my heart to see the contrast between this man and the stoic, emotionless Mu-gak we know — to see exactly how much he lost when his sister was killed."
Not only your heart, it hurts my heart too :”(
This is totally a heartbreaking scene. One minute, I was aww-ing, oh so sweet! Who doesn’t want an oppa who is so loving and aegyos like Mugak? I sure want one for myself, haha
And then the next minute, that Mugak’s face just made me all teary-eyed, it’s like he’s trying to suppress his own sadness and pain within himself T__T sad!
Overall, I like the balance, I'm loving it. And I can’t believe we are only 2 episodes into the series, please stay good, drama :)

At first i also thought that mugak also doesnt have sense of smell...but when he tried to smell the mint candy..i realised that he actually can smell?? so the senses that he lost are only pain, hot temperature and taste?
in addition he also suppressed his feeling..so maybe that what makes him senseless alltogether..hoping that episode 3 and 4 gives the same pace and vibe like first two episodes...give me my adorable murim pweasse...

I'm not sure Mugak lost his sense of taste.. Isn't his condition only the inability to feel pain? Being scalded by hot drinks is kinda like pain....
I think he stuffs himself more because he's shut down emotionally (more by choice than by a medical condition?) and all that eating is maybe unconsciously linked to "feeling empty" inside...

Good point. In a sense he has checked out of life. What's keeping him going is his obsession with finding his sister's killer. Thus, he's eating to fill up the "emptiness", and also because he does not care about the future enough to watch his health.
Yeah, I thought analgesia only refers to the inability to feel pain. Perhaps his awkward social skills and lack of feelings in general refer more to the fact that he is just shut down emotionally.
Hopefully, the drama will us more Mu Gak's backstory so we can find out what happened to him after his sister died.

this was such a cute episode, the comedic gag was brilliant. my jaw dropped cause I did not expect Bear-Chun to be so expressive all of a sudden
I will def continue watching it. although it sort of reminds me of the style of taiwanese dramas... which is not bad, I mean. we need more quirkyness. But I am afraid the path is going to be similar to KMHM a lot: keep us entertained and then hit with something sad near the end. all the comedy feels like it is just meant to put your analytic brain to sleep and forget where it started

I really like this show so far, but if they could only ditch the comedy troupe audition stuff (yes, Yoochun is funny, but it's still superfluous and serves no apparent point in the narrative) they'd be perfect. Murder solving >>>>>> gag routines.
also, I tend to agree with you guys when you say there might be two people working together, it's no fun at all if we know our bad guy this early AND there's only one of him!
Two people would explain how the name mixup that led to baby sister Eun-seol's death happened, if we say Song Jong-ho's creepy doctor wasn't the guy who chased Cho-rim into the traffic after her parents' murder. But then he seemed to recognise her from a distance this ep, which suggests he has seen her before and was probably the parents' murderer too.
This is confusing.

the comedy tropes are fun once not twice is true but what if it ultimately leads to a new career for Mu Gak?
about the killers´identity and the mix-up: what if Mu Gaks´sister WASN´t killed because of the name but something else? I mean it is a thin chance and we are obviously set up to believe that she was, but what if? the other killer, another motif?
cause if she was killed bc of the name we are undoubtedly heading towards "my sister was killed in your stead get out of my life for good"- moment. I dont want to see that

I'm hoping the whole "gagwoman" thing has a backstory because it's a random career goal to have for a young woman....maybe she has scattered memories of making some people laugh in her past (like her parents?). She could have memories of being a goof or a class clown? Or maybe the only way through the darkness with the coma and seeing smells was comedy? All those are plausible reason why being a comedian is so important to her.

"Not to mention, the Barcode Murderer seems to prefer kidnapping and strangulation, yet Eun-seol’s throat was slashed."
Clever observation. This supports my earlier theory that there may be more than one killer. Also, as far as I recall, it's never mentioned in the series that there's "barcode cuts" on Eun-seul's hand, right?

I actually chucked this off to killing an eye-witness compared to killing victims that the killer/s has/have studied for a while. I don't know how it would pan out, but I didn't see killing Eun Seul as a proof that there are two killers cause there are two methods of killing..but I may certainly be wrong.

I agree that the killing of Eun-seul is one of expediency to eliminate a witness because both are uniformed schoolgirls with long hair and same name brought into the hospital at the same time because of an accident. Also the way Eun-seul is lying on the bed seems to indicated that her throat was cut with the killer behind her so he may never have gotten a good look at his victim's face.
Also Chef Jae-hee's reaction to the assault might seem abnormal but he's just gotten off an airplane and seems to have returned to Korea specifically because his girlfriend is missing. He must have felt useless, helpless and worried sick sitting on the plane but now he's back and capable of taking action. I'm sure every bit of energy is focussed on that and he probably doesn't even notice that he's been knocked over. His first question is not "why did you do this to me?" but rather, he wants to know why Mu-gak knows he's the boyfriend. He wants to pursue any piece of information that will bring his girlfriend back home safe and sound. This kind of indifference to everything except what will bring back the loved one is a not uncommon reaction of the family of a missing person.
Or, of course, there could be two killers. Both the doctor and the chef do know their sharp knives and the slit on Eun-seul's neck seemed just enough to do the job with minimal blood loss. Thanks for recapping this. It looks like GWSS is going to be worth watching and when I read the synopsis I was dubious.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!
Loved this ep. even more than the first. Highlight was definitely the Green Light gag audition! Chunnie is sooo good in this role as Mu Gak. The flashbacks with his sister were such a stark contrast with his current self. Hope we will see the old Mu Gak returning slowly. SSK is doing a great job as well and it'd be fun to see them tackling the investigation together.
I like the CG and it doesn't take away from the drama by being cheesy. The amount of food Mu Gak consumes is astounding! I like all those dishes he ate, just not that much and not at the same time. LOL
The chef bf is a bit shady for sure. And Dr. Chun's reaction to seeing Cho Rim again just means that he's not gonna sit still for long...
Looking forward to tomorrow!!!

@Lollypip : thx for recapping this show !!
Well, it seems I'm back in dramaworld with this show !! I really enjoyed these 2 first episodes, and I actually can't wait for the next ones ! The story is well paced and still it doesn't feel rushed at all, and I like the 2 main characters.
We were thrown into their daily lives 4 years after The Murders, and I really am curious about :
- How did Mu Gak become a cop ? I mean, he went from cute-guy-playing-with-the-fishes to stone-faced-cop, and I really want to see more of the transition (I understand he couldn't possibly continue doing the things he were doing before his sister was killed, and I also understand why he wanted to be a cop, but still, how he made the transition is smth I want to see ^^)
- The cop that adopted Cho Rim : what are his intentions ? Did he feel pity and then adopted her or is he waiting for the time she remembers and can tell him what she saw ?
- What's the story behind the barcode ? THIS is the most intriguing thing : why a barcode, and why random(?) people ?
Anyway, glad I joined this ship :)
(and @GB, glad to see you here since Healer ^^)

Hi Lu! Glad to see you too! I'm also popping into Angry Mom recaps which is highly recommended too. Are you there as well?
About Cho Rim's adopted cop-dad... I find it strange that he doesn't ever tell her that she's not his daughter, that she had a different life and a different name. Partly I do agree it could be because he's hoping she'll remember and he'd be on the spot to get the info.
However, I'm also guessing that keeping her identity a secret is done in the name of protecting her. IE he's keeping an eye on her to keep her safe, and he hopes that if she never behaves as though she knows, the killer will not get spooked enough to try to kill her (again).
However, being forewarned is being forearmed... she should know why she, in particular, ought to be 'careful of strangers'. There is also the possibility that she might suddenly start getting back her memories, accidentally reveal her identity to the killer and start getting pursued. Her confusion at that time will be terrible because she was never informed. So all in all, this version of noble idiocy, is still idiotic. I think his kdrama reason will be that he saw she was so happy and worry-free and could not bring himself to tell her. :)
There was also another comment in a previous recap that not telling Cho Rim is a bad lie of omission. The fallout when she discovers her much beloved 'father' has been lying to her, will be about as bad as knowing that she's on a killer's list.
So we enjoy all the funny while we have it, cos we know it's going to get painful in a few weeks' time, if not sooner!!! :D

Commission or omission - which is the lesser evil?
Imagine telling a 15 year old high school girl who has just woken up from being in coma for 6 months and who is now traumatised with amnesia and a strange ability to see smells that her parents were murdered by a serial killer who is still on the loose. Let her know that she is the sole survivor and eye witness and that an innocent girl bearing the same namesake was murdered in her place. If the serial killer knows she is still alive, he will come after her to finish the job.
If that is not enough to put her in the lunatic asylum, this poor child will spend the rest of her life cowering and looking over her shoulder in fear. Then you ask her to make a decision. Since she is now an orphan, would she prefer to be put in an orphanage or a foster home so that she can get on with her life? If her foster parents are not aware of her past, they will also be in danger if the killer tracks her down.
As for the state government, since she is a key eye-witness, she will require protection. The police department is already so short-staffed, how can they afford to have an officer watch over her 24 hours and for how long?
Weighing out all these options, which would be the most practical solution? To have a detective who knows her case well and to watch over her so that if she ever regains her memory, he will be there to help her get over the trauma. I'm pretty sure he did not kidnap her so that he can adopt her as his daughter and give her a new identity without the approval of his bosses. So why should she blame the poor man for 'lying' to her when she recovers her memory later on?
So for those who clucked their tongues in disapproval, who insists that her rights had been violated, there is a need to remember that Rights must always come with Responsibilities.

@Gr8*
Thanks for your well elucidated take on omission and the good reasons why it would have been chosen as the 'better' alternative.
I agree that on the practical side, if she needed protecting etc, it would have been too much or expensive. However that in itself was not the issue. She was brought into the care of the good cop, but even he cannot watch over her 24 hours a day... so it is not about others protecting her.
It is more that now, 3-4 years' later, should the deception remain to such an extent, that she does not know that she ought to be extra vigilant or to protect herself?
Already the doctor is watching her. He may even befriend her and win her trust. Granted, she cannot not trust everyone, however she can be made cautious about someone who approaches her.
On rights and responsibilities... since she is no longer a child, with her knowing at least that she could be in danger, she will be able to take on the responsibility of being careful. So that is as it should be.
Also, something feels wrong about letting her believe that she is the natural daughter of the cop. Even if the whole truth cannot be told, should she not know that her dad adopted her. The deception at such a base level by such a significant person in her life, could make her lose trust (and her bright cheeriness).

I was thinking perhaps
The first killer saw Cho Rim's face and that she was wearing the uniform and had a second killer who killed Mugak's Eun Seol to finish his job of wiping out any potential eyewitnesses rather than it being a targeted job.
The black sneakers they both wore could be either different or the same models (for whatever reasons such as product placement and sponsors) but it makes sense for the sneakers to be both black- if you were going to murder someone you wouldn't wear white in the scenaero there was red patches everywhere like DUDE YOU LOOK SUS AF and everyone will be like WHUT , thus drawing attention to yourself

I don't understand this part:
"There seems to be nothing that the victims have in common, other than the murderer’s method of operation. They all started out as missing persons, and were all discovered dead on the seventh day. Interestingly, they were all kept alive for six days and strangled the day before their bodies were found, and they all had a strange pattern of cuts on their left wrists that resemble barcodes."
Were Cho Rim's parents murder method different?
They didn't stay alive and missing for 6 days.
They were murdered in their house and the bodies discovered after 7 days. Or they were just unconscious, not dead, when Cho rim arrived home?

I believe you're right. When Cho Rim walks in, it looks like they're dead but I think they were actually drugged/knocked unconscious. And 7 days later, they're discovered dead in their swimming gear.
What's interesting though is why he chose to kill two people at that time, while it's been only one person the other times. Also none of the victims have anything in common.
Ah the suspense!

I'm enjoying this show! Oh Micky how do I love thee...He is awesomely cute!
That doctor is creeping me out. I'm thinking that there are two killers and that his sister was killed because they have the same name. But how come the doctor recognized Cho-rim or did he just picked his next victim?
And yes to the details! because we are not dumb.

"He says the wallet was soaked in river water, and the dog who lives where it was found must have carried it there. "
I don't get why all the cops laughed at Mu-gak when he suggested that. Do none of them have a dog, or know anyone who has a dog. Dogs do that all the time, it's what they do.

They laugh cause how in earth he knows there is dog there..its like he made up illogical story..cause no evidence there was dog there..and to make story that a dog take the wallet from the river and left it there seems not logic..my guess~~

"Mu-gak is still holding onto his own secret that he can’t feel, smell, or taste anything" I think I've missed something.. I know that they said he can't feel anything, but when did they mention that he can't smell nor taste anything either?

I mean tasting and smelling are included in sensing as well. They are 2 of the senses.

My two cents on the two killers/confusing one girl with the other because of the names:
1)there is the doctor in the house and chasing Cho-rim, he knows her name, face and that she is being taken to a hospital, but has to go back quickly to the house to "take care" of the parents unconscious bodies.
2)the acomplice/suspicious chef is called immediately to definitely "take care" of Eun-seul in the hospital with only the name of the tag.
The house killer, (the doctor) blodies his white coat while checking that this is not the Eun-seul you are looking for.
So we never see who kills her in the hospital.

There was blood in the doc’s shoulder right?
But what I can’t understand is why Muhgak had his hand on the spot where the neck was slit.

Yeah, you know. I really don't know what it is about this drama...but I really love it already. I just think it's going to be super enjoyable all throughout. And, like many others, I'm loving how fast-paced it is. And are 2 leads, together and apart.
Also, totally agree about the smell CGI! So surprisingly pretty and cool. I went back through the episodes a second time just to take note of what smells we've seen so far and what they look like. I get so excited now, whenever there's a new one!
This drama already has me feeling a tad bit disappointed every time I finish an episode and have to wait for a second one. I'm honestly super surprised and impressed that it already has me feeling this way...

I love that actor who plays Dr. Chun but I’m uncomfortable about how similar his previous role was to this. I still feel like he just came out of that jail in Dr. Frost straight to kidnapping and barcode killing instead of memory changing.
I do love muhgak and cho rim’s chemistry. Honestly though I skip past those comedy scenes.Just not a fan of those. Cringe cringe . but yay for a new career type in kdrama

Finally, after having a dry spell on KDRAMA, i have a new show to watch. This is actually pretty entertaining, cheesy but, enough to keep my watching. :)
FIGHTING!!

Tbh I'm still not sold on Shin Se Kyung's acting even though I love her character. I feel that whenever she and Yoochun are acting out the gags, Yoochun is always the one channeling the energy and comedic spirit. Shin Se Kyung on the other hand seems to me like she's trying to wing it--make it somewhat funny but also appear pretty-as-usual (i.e not really immersing in a role that's ostensibly obsessed about gag). I think she still has a long road ahead in terms of letting the character speak to and for her. Granted, she is much better here than her previous dreary roles, but it's also time to shed any idol/starlet burdens if she wants to get anywhere with acting chops. Look forward to her progress~~~

Count me hooked as well! Had total withdrawals waiting for Ep 3.
Love our Yoochun, and I haven't really seen Shin Se Kyung in anything, but she's charming in this role! It's a totally whacky superpower, but she makes it very believable.
I wonder if the serial killer (or plural) has some sensory perception/defect of his own?

@Prettysup, you should watch Yoo Chun in Rootfop Prince (2012) and his debut drama Sungkyungkwan Scandal(2010). After that, I bet you will be a JYJ fan !

I really like this drama! Maybe it's just that I'm home alone in my apartment at night, but at the end there I felt really creeped out when they both stare down the hill where the car fell. And yet when funny things happen I smile and laugh like this is a romcom. Kudos to the writing and directing so far.

Also, there are so many familiar actors! I think the only regular cast member i haven't seen before is the detective who likes to dress well on steakouts.
Namgoong Min is awesome, but at this point I'm conditioned to be suspicious of all his characters, lol. And Song Jong-ho, why so creepy? You remain my one and only second lead love from The Princess' Man.
