God’s Gift – 14 Days gets the Hollywood remake treatment

And the remake trend continues: Following titles like You From Another Star, Good Doctor, and Nine, last year’s murder-mystery-time-traveling thriller God’s Gift – 14 Days is also being snapped up for an American version.

According to drama production company Goldenthumb Pictures, God’s Gift’s writer, Choi Ran, will participate in the American production. Choi will serve as executive producer and will be working with behemoth Hollywood agency CAA to package and cast the project with CAA talent. The remake will proceed in the usual fashion for American shows, which is to produce a pilot episode first and then hope the series is picked up for a full season.

I’m fine with the idea of a God’s Gift remake, because it’s a high-concept story that I could see working well in any language: A mother (originally played by Lee Bo-young) lives her worst nightmare when her beloved daughter is kidnapped and murdered, then mysteriously given a second chance to save her life when Time/Fate/The Universe gifts her with a two-week trip back in time. Aided by an awesomepants ex-cop who becomes an unexpected ally (Jo Seung-woo), she realizes that her life wasn’t quite what it seemed and navigates a sea of suspicious characters to track down her girl.

I do have two reservations, which are: (1) What are you going to do after Season 1 is over? and (2) You’ve gotta do something about that ending, man.

First off, God’s Gift seems like it wouldn’t work past the first season. There are some American series that have made multiple seasons out of ideas that sounded just as miniseries-like (Prison Break and Revenge come to mind), but I’d argue that those shows suffered for it and should have been single-series runs. The second issue is more readily fixed, in that you see what the K-drama did in blowing its entire story in the last hour, and then just don’t do that. Even though I’ve moved past God’s Gift and watched tons of dramas since then, there’s a lingering disappointment that’s hard to wash away entirely, especially given how awesome I thought the show was for most of its run. The last bite really is the bitterest.

In any case, it’s promising when remakes work with the original producers, and while an EP can run the gamut from being a super-hands-on force in shaping a show to being almost a courtesy title, it’s much better than licensing something and cutting ties to the original. We’ll see how things shake out when the remake of God’s Gift – 14 Days gets to work on the pilot.

I love God's Gift (bad ending and all), so I'm definitely gonna watch out for the remake.

Maybe Hollywood will do it right (which sometimes happens)... cause that story had some good stuff going on until that annoying ending. So...a chance to perfect it. With the remakes, I'm just worried about them messing up Nine. You from another star I'm kinda neutral to. Thanks for the news.

I loved this show so much that I'm still incredibly bitter about that ending. The feeling of betrayal is real. But I still give it props for such an awesome ride.

It will do well westernized....as long as that ending changes.

I LOVED this show so much too except for that ending!! Jo Seung Woo's character was so awesome! What was with that ending? :( To say that the ending was a major disappointment is an understatement. I was so mad!! Also I was telling all my friends to watch it. We watched it together and then that ending happened! I am still reluctant to recommend a kdrama to someone after that. Lol.

THAT ENDING! But I'm not really bitter about it any more. God's Gift is still one of my favourite dramas. It did everything right besides the last -what is it- half hour?
Doubt that'll like the Hollywood remake as much, but I'm curious.

BTW are the other remakes done and where to watch them?

I'd recommend "3-Iron", "Always" with So Ji-Sub, "A Werewolf Boy", "Love 911", and "Sunny." Don't know if I'd call them artsy (except for "3-Iron"), but definitely well made and well acted.

Does anyone know when and on which network all these remakes will be airing?? For one, the "You From Another a Star" remake and "Good Doctor " remakes were announced a while ago but I've heard and read nothing about it since then...

It takes about 2 years for most TV shows to make it to air and that's if they are lucky enough to be greenlit by execs after the show has been put together and sometimes after being shown to test audiences. There's a chance they might never even make it to air but hopefully at least one remake does.

Well, neither show is anywhere on this year's slate of pilot orders, which means that they're not happening this year for sure.

Doesn't mean they're dead in the water though. Sometimes projects get a second go-around the following pilot season, so we could still see a pilot in May 2016. But it's rare, and it's practically a miracle when a show actually gets on the air after that. The most recent example I'm thinking of is Hieroglyph, which was a show that was passed on, then in a subsequent pilot season got picked up for a straight-to-series order, meaning they were committed to filming multiple episodes, and in fact they had already filmed a bunch of episodes when Fox pulled the plug on the show before it aired.

So, I wouldn't hold my breath for either project to air. Doesn't mean it can't happen though. Sometimes a show doesn't make it not because it wasn't good, but because it doesn't fit into the network's existing slate. And I'm sure CW wasn't too keen on another alien love drama right after their latest alien love drama Star Crossed got cancelled after one season.

I for one loved loved loved You From Another Star and think it could be great fun as a US show with bigger budgets and higher production value. But who knows, maybe we got lightning in a bottle with Jun Jihyun and Kim Soohyun. Their chemistry was what really made the show and that's one of the hardest things to replicate.

yeah, if they really gonna make a remake of this drama, plz make sure to do smthing abt that ending. I'm still bitter abt that ending tbh, so i'm totally opened to the idea of an american version with a different ending. Heck, if only they shot another episode for an alternate ending, i will be a happy and satisfied viewer! lets juz hope it wont be as bad as revenge. Gawd, revenge was so good for the 1st season n a half of the 2nd season, then i totally abandoned the whole series.

Anyhowwww... i cant wait for the remake!!

God's gift 14 days is one of my most favourite dramas ever. One of the few dramas which I feel is perfect from beginning to the end. The end is fine, though it is sad and fans would prefer it to be different but then the whole drama of coming back from death won't make sense or the ending leave such a deep impact.
I am curious, how the US remake will be.
What I like about GG14D is that there was no unnatural forced romance...but I think US version may have a romantic line between the lead because without kissing and cuddling, there are hardly any dramas/ movies (X-files is an exception).

Let's see how it turns out to be.

God's Gift was a drama I enjoyed a lot, but wouldn't recommend. That ending just killed the whole show for me.

The first season of Prison Break was so good! But yeah, the following seasons weren't great anymore.

Actually, season two of PB wasn't too bad either, (at least, IMO) but after that, it really went downhill.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure the entire viewing public hated the ending of God's Gift. You just got the sense that the writer wanted to majorly piss off everyone and see what happened. (Take note, Hollywood! It did not work out well!)

I believe they can do like Grace Point on Fox, only order 10 eps. Although the rating wasn't that good, and fox is famous for dropping low rating shows, they still showed it till the end and changed the ending from the original one.

I am still skeptic as to how they will ever remake You Who Came from the Star, they need to find and cast Cheon Song Yi right and in the hollywood setup that is going to be a big task. The only guy who could maybe do it right is Bryan Fuller and he is busy with Hannibal not that I am complaining. Pushing Daisies is still my all time favorite drama that got cancelled way too soon and it had beautiful romance.
But this one, Gods gift 14 days can translate so well, I'd love to see a hollywood spin on it.

ugh this show was so amazing, right up till the ending WHEN IT WASN'T. i was SO freaking obsessed with this show while it was airing. i would rewatch the episodes over and over all week while dying waiting for the next batch. i talked about it all the time to people who knew dramas and even went on soompi to read the thread (and i never go on there). i hadn't been this manic-obsessed about a drama since story of man.

and then the ending came along and i couldn't even talk about it anymore. like a stone dropped into a lake. i just shut up about it. i think it was shock. lol

thing is, i still have the episodes on my computer, and just recently i played a couple of episodes again, and they're still good. jo seung-woo is still a sexy beast. but it's a little bittersweet, knowing how the ending was. grrr.

all that said, i'm still totally up for an american remake, and will watch it if it ever makes it.

I would have been super excited if not for that unfortunate ending. This drama had potential (I LOVED it a lot!... less the ending), I'm sure they would end up changing the ending because otherwise how would they make other seasons (is that's the plan)? Single season will be better because they also have the constraint of 14 days, if they take the orginal route.

I hope they refocus the narrative back to mother's tenacity and sacrifice for her child which the kdrama abandoned. That happened well before the ending which is when i disengaged so by the time they killed Mr. Awesome I was already meh about it. Otherwise I can be optimistic. I'd maybe have a more definite opinion if I knew what happened to Nine...

Hmmm - might have to check out GG.

Don't see how YFAS will translate well - too "soapy" for the typical night-time US audience (by that, I don't mean sex) and don't see any Hollywood actress pulling off JJH's humor (a big part of which was mangling English pronunciations).

oh God's Gift, i love you in so many ways. Thanks for introducing me to Mr Awesome, bcoz of him i started watching all of his past dramas and movies. I'm so obsessed with that show when it was still airing. I love everything about it except for, of course, Jo Seung Woo's dying at the end... I hate it, i hate it so much but still i voted for it as my best drama of 2014. I wish JSW will do another drama again. Sigh!

hollywood always changes the endings into "happy endings", don't they? sometimes it wrecks the story.... like the dutch film "The Vanishing" and hollywood had jeff (beau?) bridges be the hero in the end. wrecked the whole original storyline...

and yeah, okay - i HATED the ending of God's Gift, but i won't be "happy" if hollywood has bradley cooper (or whomever) have a happy ending... i'm still traumatized that cho seung woo didn't..........

Changing the ending could be what launches season 2.

They could even keep the ending as is but have Lee Bo-Young's character be as WTH??? as the audience. Have her investigate the nonsensical twist because there has to be more to it, her friend/partner wouldn't do that not in the original timeline or in this one.

TBH honest though I don't see the show getting the go ahead.

I think it'd be much better off as a movie than a seasonal drama. There's only so much you can add to the plot to keep it tight and yet fresh each episode. Too much broth in the soup dilutes its taste.

But above all, can anyone replace Jo Seung-woo really? Ahjumma!.... :D
