Shin Se-kyung offered lead in Sensory Couple

Well, it’s not final yet, but Sensory Couple (the drama formerly known as The Girl Who Sees Smells) is courting yet another actress to lead, with Shin Se-kyung up as the latest contender. Her agency confirmed having received the offer, but stated that final decisions have yet to be made.

Sensory Couple is the drama based on a webtoon about a girl who can see smells — literally, as in being able to visualize them — and a man who loses his younger sister in the “Bar Code Murders” and also loses his ability to sense things. He suffers an accident with the heroine, who survives “miraculously” but loses her memories. (Did she… steal his senses then? Ha. If only biology worked that way.) Yoochun’s name has been attached to the drama early on, but I notice that he has yet to confirm officially as well, so currently nobody’s committed to the show.

Of course, it doesn’t have to mean anything serious when one potential star is announced as a possibility and then declines the role — that’s a standard part of the process these days — but once you’ve moved on to Number 4, that’s when I start wondering what’s wrong with the role. (Suzy, Kim Ji-won, and Jin Se-yeon were mentioned as possibilities.) After Iron Man, I find Shin Se-kyung quite a bit less off-putting than I used to, even if the drama was a major flop and went largely ignored, because I liked its quirkiness and thought she suited the sunny, sweet heroine very well. (Which is more than I could say of any of her prior roles, such as When a Man Loves and Fashion King, which, blegh.)

But even so, I’m pretty wary of her being cast in this, because I don’t find her easily likable — I find her default mode to be rather cold onscreen. And I want Yoochun to be paired with someone better than most of those names, someone with both acting skill and personal appeal, with whom he can build up a credible rapport. Is Baek Jin-hee busy? Han Groo? Lee Yubi? Alternately, maybe Yoochun can pick a new drama, preferably (for some of us) playing a sweet dork.

Sensory Couple is scheduled to take the Hyde, Jekyll, Me timeslot on Wednesdays and Thursdays and premieres in April.

Sigh... why the producer never think of other talented actress? Lee Yu Bi/Park Se Young/Jung So Min/Han Groo?

I hope will Yoochun back out from this drama. I'd love to see him in new acting project but maube not this one. His name has been mentioned many times but strangely he never officially confirm or reject the drama. It's hella unusual of him.

Can SBS please open their eyes for once? There are many young actresses that actually good in acting! Why pick her?

Yeah I guess they made rumours about offering the role to the absolute worst actresses first just so that when they finally cast a bad actress (but not as bad as the others), people say "at least it's not as bad as casting them!"

I was so sad the Kim Ji Won rumour was denied. Talented, beautiful and plays different types of roles so well but dramas just do not like to cast talented tv supporting actresses in leads. Instead they go after some half baked idol with a pretty face, smh.

Perpetual mystery of kdrama casting in the last couple of years - why do PDs actively avoid casting rookie actresses who've actually proved themselves in supporting roles, in favour of people with all the talent of a cardboard cutout? Are they actively avoiding talent or something?

Well considering it's a SBS drama and Baek Jinhee has generally been an MBC girl - I'd say we most likely cant have her :(

I like SSK generally, she's pretty and is not terrible so I wouldn't mind watching this... if I've extra time.

Yeah, Yoochun doesn't have much time before he goes to the army...if he doesn't decline the role, i'll pray that this drama will become KMHL 2, not Blood 2. I'm more concerned about the script for this drama than the acting...We already know Yoochun's acting is good. As for Shin Se Kyung, i've watched her in Blade Man and her acting was ok, i hope she can surprise us in a good way in this drama.

Shin Se Kyung is definitely the least of the evils that have been suggested as possibilities for this drama (not counting Kim Ji-won, who is ten times the actress any of the other three will ever be).

We'd have been far less pleased if her name was suggested at the start of casting, but after the spectre of Suzy and JSY it's like 'yeah we'll take SSK! Anything as long as it's not them!' lol.

Officially, the drama was only offered to Suzy. Kim Ji Won's agency denied getting any offer, and when the rumour about Jin Se Yeon came. out SBS denied it immediately (thank god).

If you take out Kim Ji Won from this group (much better actress who would chew up the other 3 even in a bad role), SSK is actually a better choice than the other 2. At least she is capable of acting sometimes unlike them. Not the best actress but still levels above Suzy or JSY as actresses.

Oh man. I haven't seen Iron Man so Shin Se-kyung is still in my stink list. She's such a wooden actress, even her smile feels so forced. It's like SBS is nitpicking the worse of the bunch and courting them for lead. If she refuses it, maybe we can go ahead with someone slight better since they've already used up the bottom options.

Why is Yoochun still 'considering positively'. That's a long time to be considering when there has been four actress playing the merry-go-round. I'm hoping he rejects, but maybe it's already a done deal.

Blade Man was wacky as hell. I found it enjoyable only because of Lee Dong Wook. It's fan girl heaven. The actual story is really confusing and the ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered. It was very enjoyable though. So if you are looking for pointless fun this is the drama for you.

It was a steaming pile of crap. Shit se kyung can't act and has the charisma of a stick. only reason to watch is to skim through the episodes and find shirtless and shower rscenes with lee dong wook. So Yep in sum I wouldn't waste my time with it.

@NiteBan, Blade Man is not the typical korean drama. A bit of Tim Burton + whimsical tone to it.

And if you're the type without any patience for limp Candy heroines being dragged around by domineering chaebols, you will enjoy seeing Shin Se Kyung stand up to the man child Lee Dongwook and maybe take him down a peg or two.

And for the record, I find Shin Se Kyung quite decent in this show.

SHIN Eun-kyung will probably be too old for this role. Plus, she's already doing the TVN morning drama "Family Secrets" (side note: It's based on "¿Dónde está Elisa?" Is this the first-ever Korean remake of a Latin American soap opera?) *wink*

Speaking of Shim Eun-kyung, isn't "Tomorrow's Cantabile" the equivalent of a Chungmuro actress's one-off project? I can see her fitting into this role with her sunny, not-yet-defeated-by-the-world vibe--that was my impression of the heroine because they tried casting younger in the earlier stages--but I'm not holding my breath.

I think she put in a genuinely great performance in Miss Korea - it might be that the general Korean public isn't aware of it since the drama had really low ratings.

She used to be an icon of horrible acting in the past but sometime in 2013 she flipped a switch and managed to deliver performances with actual feeling and fire - I still remember her turn as Gumiho Mommy in Gu Family Book, the drama would have been a lot better if she had had the lead and not just a cameo.

actually Miss korea had decent ratings in Korea so I'm sure people saw her slight acting improvement but still think she's a bad actress Check out the most recent article of Lee Yeon Hee on NB. By the way, her performance in Miss Korea was not "great"...I do not use the word great loosely.

http://netizenbuzz.blogspot.com/2015/02/lee-yeon-hee-concedes-first-love-title.html

0

@pogo
This article is where I found the K-netizen comment that said LYH is icon of crappy acting and that got upvoted over 5 thousand times.
I recognize that she improved but still, I do not think she's good at all. I'm surprised you mentioned Park Ha Sun in your list because the K-netizens said she was horrible in "Temptation"

0

@nicole - Park Ha-sun has put in solid work in multiple roles before Temptation (which by all accounts suffered from the same problem as Park Shin-hye in Heirs i.e. an absolutely terrible role for the actress). Temptation in general was hated because of its adultery-centric theme and poor script (unlike, say, Secret Love Affair)

I've seen her in Dong Yi, Two Weeks and even Three Days and it has me convinced she can live up to a role if she is given something to do. And she worked with Yoochun in Three Days and they had great chemistry even without an overt romantic storyline.

And as for Lee Yeon-hee.......Miss Korea was competing directly against You From Another Star. This was before the 2014 ratings slump, and ratings averaged out at 7.2 %. Not high at all, even by the lowered standards of now. And at the time, I saw comments from knetizens stating that despite her past bad acting, she had improved in Miss Korea. A year down the line, the flopping of the drama basically means that improvement has been forgotten and all people really remember is Lee Yeon-hee's previous badly delivered performances (of which there have been many).

She may not be the best, but at least she proved herself as a competent actor who brought something more than a pretty face to the table. It's just that Go Ara got credit for doing the same thing and she didn't, because GAR's drama was a success and hers wasn't.

0

@pogo
just want to clarify...Yes, I do not think LYH is good, but I don't think she's terrible. I was kind of surprised at the recent article on NB about LYH because back in 2014, they said she improved but now in 2015, they call her a crappy actress again and gave too many upvotes. I just can't believe they forget so easily.

I never told you my personal opinion about Park Ha Sun. I think she's a decent actress...not bad/not good, but I was just pointing out how harsh the K-netizens were when they said her acting is horrible in Temptation.

0

pogo,

kinda feel bad for lee yeon hee's bad image in her own country cuz miss korea was underrated and general public in south korea just clearly recall her bad acting in various projects in the past and unfortunately they still remain fresh in people's minds.

0

@nicole - I was just pointing out why I included Park Ha-sun and Lee Yeon-hee on my list, is all.

In a way, netizen hate on Park Ha-sun for basically playing a bad character in Temptation isn't unlike the general attitude to Park Shin-hye after Heirs over here - in both cases, people can't tell the difference between a terrible drip of a character and the (actually decent) actress who plays her.

Netizen opinion of bad actors isn't easily swayed unless someone puts in a legitimately good performance that enough people bother to watch. Which is how circa Miss Korea airing time, some people admitted LYH improved but then forgot it (it's one role, after a lifetime of crappy acting) once a little time had passed.

As for Lee Yeon-hee, she clearly gets a lot of acting work whether or not she's good at it. I'm just glad that she's finally improved enough that I don't fear her casting in a drama anymore. She's never given me the 'empty upstairs' vibe that certain other famously bad actresses do, at least she has it in her to act and make it convincing.

0

i really hope she could keep the switch on because she is so bland in Detective K, which i saw last week.

0

Tbh, I used to think Lee yeon Hee was very bad actress but now I think she's decent. Sadly, korea netizen overall perspective remains the same b/c they still she's horrible & continue bashing her nonstop.

0

@Pogo

lee yeon hee was terrible in the past. now she's better than shin se kyung but IMO, she's still a bad actress...just not as bad as SSK.

0

@j2hr @jbmc - trust me, if someone like Suzy had put in a performance like LYH's on Detective K people would be falling over themselves to say how much she's improved and how great she is. She at least showed that if she's given a decent role, she can deliver. Not just serviceably (in the way that we have to lower our standards and be content that she's even facing the right way on camera) but well.

@Erin - between Miss Korea and the first ep of Gu Family Book, I think she actually did really well. It's a shame that just wasn't recognised, and I hope she doesn't get discouraged and regress.

0

@j2hr

I haven't seen Detective K yet but some folks said L. Yeon Hee's acting is bad and complained she's very bland too.

one of the most dumbfounded things i found in kdrama land is: how in the world Shin Se Kyung and Jin Se Yeon actually got offered so many lead roles?

they can act, sure, but they are not first lead material. And to be honest, i don't even think their acting even up to par to be a 2nd lead actress (considering that nowadays there's plenty of 2nd lead that actually very good in acting, sometimes even surpassing the lead actress). i don't hate them. it just that every time i read the news that they got offered new lead roles, i just automatically rolls my eyes and it turns off my interest on the drama.

some actress makes it or break it depends on the drama or the role they take. but for these 2 actresses, I think I've seen almost all of their drama where they're the lead and my god, even when pairing them up with the best actors cannot save their acting.

But the most amazing thing is, I actually finished watching all their drama, and no thanks to them. most of it was thanks to the talented lead actors (Joo Won, Park Ki Woong, Joo Ji Hoon, Lee Jong Suk, Lee Dong Wook, Yoo Ah In)

*tbh, when i read this article, my interest in the drama went from 90% to 30% at the drop of a hat. and I'm saying this as an avid fan of Yoo Chun since his glorious days as DBSK.

Yea, I agree. I never got the appeal of Yoochun's acting. He isn't that great. He's not bad but he doesn't leave a strong impression. He's just so-so. I still cringe when I watch him act and I don't think he's a good crier.

Well that is just your personal opinion but it is really far stretched to say Yoochun is at the same level with SKK, especially after he won all the critics praises this year, in and out of the country. Well i can expect this kind of comments anyway.

Agree. I don't get the praise of his actings. He's overrated.

Let be real. All 5 of Yoochun's dramas since 2010 have rated badly mainly in the 10%-11% range. No top actress is going to want to be his leading lady.

well that makes it sound like no actress wanna be with any actor then. I mean in 2014, the rating was meh for all dramas, making 3Days ranking 2nd or 3rd in rating, winning over IOTL. Miss Ripley was over 15% actually. Over all, Yoochun doesn't have the best rating dramas, but his dramas never went below 10% no matter how the script sucks. He may have problems with chosing his scripts, but he managed to do ok with it, so compared to most young actors, i think he did way better nowadays.

Of course the ratings will always be okay since he has huge fandom DBSK behind. It's just the same case with his ex teammate Yunho. We all know how bad he is as an actor, but the ratings of his dramas never went drop. Eventhough Yoochun is a bit better than him. Both are average actor but always get offer because producer really know the strong fandom will support them always. That's the real fact.

You know it is ok. You don't have to change ur usenames so many times xD No matter what, Yoochun is way better than YH. Yoochun's drama SKKS started at very low rating too. Many idols have huge fandoms, doesn't always transfer into rating. Take the example of JJ, his dramas had really bad rating.

Another +1 for you here, it's too obvious, isn't it? lol

Obviously, she's just a jealous fan of another oppa whose acting is not getting as much recognition as YC, pity her having to play so many roles at one time in order to make YC look bad, haha..

Well, expected. This is normal in Yoochun-related posts.

Even his latest series, a non-typical minimal love scenes "Three Days", came in 3rd or 4th in the overall yearly ranking standing.

Forget about ratings, because sometimes it's just the matter of luck. I don't get why people praised his actings though.

Lets be real here..yoochun is an idol actor with a big fanbase..if the actress scored him they get the packages..and he is a good actor as well..plus,high rating doesnt equal to good drama quality..so whats your point again?

What is up with this production? Are they purposefully trying to find good-looking but bad acting female leads?

Ugh, that automatically kills any interest i had in the drama. Shin Se-kyung is so cold and 2 dimensional as an actress. She never brings any life to her characters...not sure if it's her character selection, her acting, or a combination of both, but I'm not excited for this drama anymore

Agree. Shin Se-kyung always seems to have a cold stare on camera. I cant believe she keeps getting offers when her acting is so bad and lifeless.
... There must be some deals being made...

Please...., not her...please...

They said her acting is better than before. But, still, ..

I'm also not a fan of Yoochun, but Yoochun's acting is way more like-able than Shin Se Kyung's.

Nope, she's not pretty and most of all, she's a really bad terrible actress. I-netz and K-netz know this very well.

The men think she's pretty but a lot women do NOT think she's pretty. By the way, Kdrama audience are mostly female....Some people think Shin se kyung is plastic too.

Maybe I AM blinded by her beauty, I don't know. But I truly don't think she's quite as bad as everyone here makes her out to be. She may not be the best actress, but the hate here piles on rather thick in my opinion. Those who dislike her should definitely check her out in Blade Man, where she is more expressive than in past roles.

I don't think she's pretty at all. I always wondered why she was getting offers for more roles when 1.) she can't act 2.) she's not pretty. - Not that I think beauty is a requirement for a role but in Korea, they usually pick pretty/good-looking actors for the leads. Maybe for ratings too, but also beauty is highly valued in the culture.
Now what was I saying... Yes, I don't find her pretty at all.

I can see her beauty. She has that fey, helpless look that men like. Good for her. work it. Her acting is not stellar but she was perfect in Blade Man.

If Yoo chun stared opposite her it might make him look manlier. (then he already is: no hating fan girls;)
She might have the effect of making her co-stars look more heroic with her as a foil.

Blade Man, btw, a work of art.
Not Secret Love Affair caliber art but pop-art. The silences, the cinematography, the directing; the actors were clearly doing exactly what the director wanted and they were doing it well.
The director had a vision and it was awesome...until the end. ~sigh~

I have to add my two cents...she really is awful in contemporary dramas, but not so bad in the saguek Deep Rooted Tree, maybe because the strong performances of the other actors overpowered hers. I haven't watched her in Blade Man where I hear she's improved, but you can count me out, if she's in. She has this sour expression that comes out even when she's modelling.

As for Yoochun, in his initial works, I found him to be really bland and meh...in Rooftop Prince, Sungkyunkwan Scandal but I found him steadily improving with each performance. He was solid in Missing You and quite good in Three Days, a drama I enjoyed tremendously.

I hope yoochun turns down this production..the storyline might seemed interesting but working with a good actress, he could further learn and improve..
Not sure why ppl like to bring yoochun down in terms of acting but he is steadily improving thats good enough for someone who main job doesnt involves acting
