Kolorful Palette: Healed [Healer]

Over the last year I’ve left so many dramas unfinished that it feels a bit surreal to enjoy one all the way through to its conclusion, and then feel that bittersweet emptiness when the credits finally roll. Perhaps Healer wasn’t perfect, but it was always consistent and hit me in all the right spots. It did a lot of things right, but what made it really stand out was that it did so little wrong. Birth secrets and tortured pasts without incessant moping or repetitive flashbacks? A compelling love story without a love triangle or circumstances absurdly tearing the leads apart? I’d like some more of that please.

I watched the last four episodes in one sitting (I prefer to binge when it comes to dramas) and I initially planned on drawing a scene from the finale, but I couldn’t resist the cuteness of this shot. It might be hard to tell, but it’s from Episode 18 when Young-shin joins Jung-hoo inside the Elder’s house after he’s drugged with incense. I love that they’ve just gotten through this incredibly stressful situation and are sitting on the floor in a strange place with possible medical attention required, but instead they’re all about snuggle-time. It’s not even dramatic we-just-started-dating-and-can’t-help-ourselves snuggling. It’s just them being comfortable with each other and naturally doing what seems appropriate to them in that moment. They may have attempted to be normal for a while, but they will always have their quirks, and that’s a big part of why they’re perfect for each other. Crazy situations come their way and it doesn’t even faze them.

I think a big part of why I love the whole no love triangle thing is that it speeds things up and we get to see more of the real relationship and how these two people actually work as a couple after they’re officially together. In most dramas it’s more about the journey to the beginning of the true relationship, but we don’t get to see much beyond that. Because Young-shin and Jung-hoo are rock solid from early on we get to see how they support each other and how they interact once they’re already comfortable with one another. This scene really showcased that, and I love the way they switch so naturally between more sentimental moments and playfulness. Their whole relationship progression is so much better than a dozen wrist grabs and some push/pull that goes on for ages.

Of course none of it would work if Park Min-young and Ji Chang-wook weren’t so great together. This is by far the most comfortable I’ve seen Park Min-young in an onscreen relationship, and I’m curious to see how she performs in her next role to see if she’s just maturing as an actress or if Healer was just the perfect part for her (or perhaps Ji Chang-wook was the perfect man?). I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to find out they’re dating IRL. For those who didn’t watch until the end of the credits, look how cute they are!

Ji Chang-wook was no slouch in his role either, and he managed to pull off an extremely multi-faceted character with ease. Bong-soo’s dorkiness and Healer’s derisive looks at deserving thugs never ceased to put a grin on my face, and the merging of Jung-hoo’s personas happened so seamlessly I never even noticed it happening. Such diversity within a character is another thing I’d love to see more of (assuming it’s pulled off equally well and doesn’t feel forced).

The actual drawing of this scene turned out to be a bit of a nightmare unfortunately. Usually drawing on the computer is full of perks and tools to make life oh-so-much easier. But then technical problems happen and I want to throw my computer out the window. I won’t go into the details since they won’t make much sense unless you use Corel Painter (and I’m pretty sure I’m the only person on the planet who uses it) but basically I spent 5 hours troubleshooting the problem, only to discover that I had somehow changed a layer setting that was irreversible. For the record, it’s pretty much the only thing in the entire piece of software that’s irreversible, and it was only possible because I was using digital watercolor this week. The end result was that I could no longer use digital watercolor and had to finish with other media (I added a paper texture to make it all combine a little better, and I think it worked?).

I’m pretty sure the whole thing happened because I have a sticky key somewhere that contributed to a magical hotkey combination I don’t know about (but pretty much every action has hotkeys in these programs, no matter how ridiculous). I noticed later that the software was acting a bit possessed and changing tools without me pressing anything, so hopefully this doesn’t happen again. It shouldn’t since this could have been avoided if I had just been using iterative saves like an intelligent person instead of just saving over the same file constantly, but I haven’t needed to use a previous save in well over a year and it drives me a bit bonkers having 20 versions of the same file, so I got lazy. Sometimes I swear that technology is sentient and just waits for us to drop our guard. I’d better backup all my photos and important documents before catastrophic hard drive failure strikes!

Thankfully I always write my posts after I finish the drawing, and talking about Healer is an excellent way to feel better. I’m even starting to feel positive about all the useful things I learned while troubleshooting! I’m not feeling quite so positive about the previews for Blood but I suppose not every drama can be squee-worthy. Thanks for the ride Healer! I think I needed you.

I have to agree with you Fanderey! No to Love-Triangle anymore! Haha. My heart still swell with pride on how this show have affected many people (my, including me!) And a lot now suffering separation-anxiety from this show and casts (esp our beautiful OTP!) Hoping for a movie of it (crossedfingers). Hehe. Beautiful drawing indeed! ;)

Yes. A solid real relationship carry on facing real lives problem, don't fool you into thinking after the kisses and the intimacy then what? Add in third party to spice ratings or churn more plot... Real life relationship has turmoil and doubts and dear and hurts that need over come one by one, has enough storms ... Third parties are a waste of emotion n draining of spirits... Which most k drama are shamelessly wasted on. I profoundly loved those off scene , the fun fooling around piggyback, the hitting /pushing each other ( LOL.. Hahaha..You got lost ...) .. Those breaking ice before intimacy scenes cuddling in really freezing studios... Because production released these precious stills, it makes us believe the emotions carry on even if Director shouted "cut"' ! Yeah, we fool ourselves not, to really believe they are off scene OTP in real. But we wants to hope, just silently hope. She is like unto the Eve to her Adam (Jung hoo ). That act scene was well chosen at the credits... To let us dream on that their stories don't just continue as Jung hoo and young shin will in the mind of Writer Song. But maybe Chang Wool and min Young also has a chance after all.

I just finished watching Healer after a 4-day binge (yup, goofed off from work lol). Can't believe it took me soooo long to discover this serial!! I had actually been staying away from kdramas for some months as I started a new job and couldn't afford the distractions as I tend to watch compulsively late into the night until I get headaches. I had just finished Reply 1998 last week and the withdrawal symptoms were so bad I needed another serial to distract myself after finding myself obsessing a little too much over Park Bo Geum's photos in my Instagram feed.

Healer really lived up to the hype and I agree with many of the viewers here that it felt fresh and had a nice mix of comedy, action, intrigue and drama. The chemistry between Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young was amazing and natural (did they not kiss more than usual compared to other serials??). The pacing of the story was tight with enough little twists to keep it interesting. I did like the fact that the love "triangle" was between Healer and the Park Bong Soo alter ego. It was both funny and bittersweet to see them try to make sense of their emotions. After all love is frequently less about logic but relying on your heart and your senses to tell you what your brain cannot.

I'm now a new fan of Ji Chang Wook (sorry PBG, still love you, but his Healer character is way cooler) and am now eager to suss out his other dramas. Suggestions on which ones to watch first are welcomed! Heard that Empress Ki is good but very looong serial?

Hopefully this picture will keep us warm and comforted through our post healer days ahead

Thank you! Thank you! Fanderay, you have captured the essence of the OTP's relationship. Why they synch so well as a couple is because they could be very well be INFJs or something like that. They are both intuitive of each other's thoughts and feelings. When things happen, they share the same perceptions and convictions. In dealing with problems, they internalize and express it love and sensibilities. They don't judge and argue, messing up stuff and situations around them. They solve things through communicating with and without words.

So Fanderay, you have amazingly illustrated the beauty of this show through the contact point they made to each other. As a throwback to the classic ET show, it's about the alien in Healer who stumbled upon the heroine and CYS who followed and believed in him all the way. This is the sugary sweet gesture that inspires all of us. This is the singular special touch that melts our hearts.

Yes indeed! Well spoken (or rather - written). Many people do not understand what all the buzz over this show was all about. The drama was far from perfect. But hey, if we were looking for perfection we would not be k-drama addicts, would we?

It is how Healer made me feel that was most significant. It is how the story thrilled us, the antics tickled us and the love inspired us. It is not just the love of Jung-Hoo and Young-Shin that was beautiful, although that in itself was truly remarkable and could have single-handedly carried the show. It is the presence and manifestations of all kinds of LOVE that truly inspired me and made me fall for Healer - that enduring love among friends (despite the betrayal); love between parents and children, biological or adoptive (and how sacrificial that can be); love of teacher and student; noona and dongsaeng; the hero and his sidekick; and many other types of relationship, regardless of how complicated they are (I honestly don't know how to describe Moon-ho's relationship with Jung-Ho and Young-Shin - but it was beautiful). This show pinched our hearts and made us cry; it made us wring our hands in anxiety and shaved off a year off our lives in the suspenseful moments; but it also made us laugh and holler; giggle and spazz; and sigh.... It was an eventful, exciting ride from beginning to end. That is why "Healer" is an unforgettable experience.

Thank you Fanderay for the always wonderful artwork and for taking us back to our Healer - love. Happy Valentine's Day everyone! May you all feel love no matter where it comes from.

You sold Healer in a phrase: "It is how the story thrilled us, the antics tickled us and the love inspired us"

We can try to describe perfection but actually love is perfect. Because with love, we forgive those who hurt us, we seek truth to right wrongs, we seek justice so restitutions can follow. And you have done it again -- by highlighting the various love bonds.

One "love" twist I didn't expect was our detective and ahjumma. I thought his frustrations were spurred by some sort of competitive streak in him. But it turned out that he simply missed her ...

I also notice the women in our Healer drama share a few common traits: long suffering, kindness, patience, no envy and keeps no record of wrong. They protect, trust, hope, persevere.... It's rare to see all the female characters in a k-drama written and acted in a rather understated / down-to-earth manner. Nothing is really loud or over-the-top yet the fabric of love is so strong, beautiful and lasting.

Healer is woven with colored threads of different seasons and knitted with tender loving care. The episodes ended but we will always cherish Healer with love. Blessings and cheers to all of you in this Valentine's day.

Hi you lovely people! I'm also with you 100%. Glad to see you here and not at all fazed by anything untoward that happened. Our love and unity is stronger than anything that anyone can throw at us ... I have no doubts :)

I love what you've said about the ET-ness in this scene that Fanderay has captured so well. And how all the various kinds of love came out so delicately, without over-dramatisation. Also what Shurei says about love: "but actually love is perfect. Because with love, we forgive those who hurt us, we seek truth to right wrongs, we seek justice so restitutions can follow."

So true, so wise, ... that is why we remain unfazed by things that are not quite so loving ;). Let us continue in this way always. Not just on these threads but in all of our lives, everywhere, anywhen. God bless! :)

@ growingbeautifully

Ah the beauty of Healer like you said is "how all the various kinds of love came out so delicately, without over-dramatisation" - well said!!

I was just sharing in the Dramabeans Podcast #27 about one particular scene: SJH was queried by his mom on ordering icebeans each time they meet when he doesn't even like beans and SJH replied that it's because mom liked it.

Not all of us will like the same dish or drama just as some of us happen to like beans and some of us don't. But we can be like SJH, we accept that others really dig certain shows and some like other shows. But I know all of us love Dramabeans. All the contributors: Javabeans, Fanderay and Healerbeans/community, thank you for making "contact" with us so that we are not "alone".

And we may be strangers/aliens in real life, but this quiet and hectic season has been very special coz I feel as if God is telling me that many of us are not living or celebrating alone in this universe. So stay sweet and "grow beautifully" like our faithful friend here. Blessings.

Right! The drama was far from perfect but we all loved it! So when I was looking for our Healer group on the open thread I was so hurt by redfox's comments :( She made us sound like 12 year old hormonal teenagers! Thanks Fanderay for another beautiful piece of art. I needed this. That bittersweet emptiness you mentioned still hasn't waned for me.

As always, I love reading your thoughts on Healer. Completely agree with your thoughts on this wonderful show and how lovely the progression of the relationship between JH and YS was. They're comfortable with each other, they love each other, they support each other and they talk to each other. A dynamite combination for a strong and lasting relationship. Gaah, why can't we have more of THIS in kdramas?

Healer was the first show that I actually LOVED PMY in. She did a fantastic job! Of course I think this had to do with a combination of her character and JCW being the perfect man ;) but also her own trajectory of improvement. :D As writer Song wrote, PMY is someone who wants to be an actress, not a celebrity, so more power to her.

And I will forever thank Healer for introducing me to my love that is JCW. He was fantastic in this show. In a sea of good looking actors, it takes more than just 'good looks' to captivate my attention and JCW has this magnetism and charm that totally pulls me in. :D Okay, I better stop gushing about him lest this comment becomes too long.

And I love that you're a JCW & PMY shipper. They really did have amazing chemistry and were super adorable off-screen. I'll be very happy for them if they do decide to date IRL. :D

I'll miss you Healer! <3 Thanks for an amazing couple of months!

A related article: http://www.soompi.com/2014/09/23/park-min-young-works-hard-to-transform-herself-as-an-actress-for-healer/

I have to give major props to PMY for all the work she put into upping her game as an actress~ she really did transform herself. Although the article doesn't explicitly connect the dots for us, it mentions that the first time PMY worked with a veteran actor was with Kim Myung-min in A New Leaf, and that PMY demonstrated "a unique resolve in her preparation for the role" of Young-shin. I like to think that her working with KMM (known not only as the King of Dramas, but also as the King of Preparation) inspired her to take a new approach to her acting. I hope she feels very proud, 'cause all her hard work totally paid off.

Heh~ I just realized that if KMM inspired PMY to more actively prepare for her roles in the future, that means that A New Leaf → a new leaf for PMY!

I'm going to miss seeing articles about Healer pop up on Dramabeans. Thank you for letting this wonderful drama live on for a bit longer. I wouldn't mind if months down the road, we all revisit it together.

In all seriousness, I notice we all talk about not being perfect a lot when it comes to Healer. I did too, I guess because I loved it so much, I needed to then be ready to have an explanation when people want to point out flaws. Well, I've never seen a perfect show, even though my love for Misaeng and so many other shows is very strong. But Healer to me, was my perfect show. It's all I've ever wished for in this genre. I'd left romance in the dust for so long. Actually, I'd gotten to the point where I was hoping the new drama I'd picked up didn't have romance. Well, this one did and it nailed it.

I hate love triangles. I hate secondary male leads. I am so glad that this drama didn't have those. I need more dramas that spend time on the actual relationship, rather than try to fool me into believing that she will end up with that other guy.

Healer Healer...I'll never get tired discussing you. I have a friend who just started this drama. Hope she'll love it just as much as we did.

Totally agree with you!! There was a lot going on that didn't distract from the main relationship - and that is a sure winner in my books!!

It was lovely to be able to follow the gentle simmering between the two leads from ep 1 right up until ep 20 without any need to roll eye balls or face palm in frustration - such a natural development in terms of relationships. From all fronts in fact. Be in Jung Hoo and his mum, YS and her mum, Moon Ho with his family, and the rest.

Been time since I've been able to value a lead pairing this much - last time I adored a lead pairing this much (from beginning to end) was...not sure, can't pin it down.

Across Kdramas though, I've always liked the relationship portrayed in 9 end 2 outs - friends turned to lovers. That too, showed natural progression.

Anyway, Healer yaaaa, I miss you terribly! I look forward to marothoning it once I get the dvd.

PMY as YS is the most adorable character I have seen in Dramaland. She is in my list of favorite actresses, now. Of course, SJN's writing is awesome too or else we won't get lines like these. :D

Oh i can never get enough of our OTP. Their chemistry is killer. i don't think that PMY got the perfect man but rather they were perfect for each other. I couldnt imagine someone else as CYS. This is the first drama i watched with JCW on and I'd gotta say that he's by far the best actor with so much emotion. But i don't really feel like watching empress ki since i don't really like HJW. god, healer, where did you even come from.

Thank you very much Fanderay for this awesome painting. It allows me to relieve that scene again as one of the most endearing scene of Healer. The Couple indeed deserves all the accolades from their fans. I can't think of any actor or actress that can give life to JH and YS other than JCW and PMY.

And oh i love how you put all your thoughts about your painting! You have such awesome talent. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart!

LOVE your painting!! This is your fifth Healer painting, right?! Which in and of itself highlights your affection for this OTP & show.

It had been about 3 years since an OTP made me swoon and spazz in a k-drama. This OTP was what got me hooked to this show. While the ending was a bit rushed (Song Ji-na's interview helped & also emphasized the negative aspects to live-shooting) this OTP remained consistent until the end.

I'm glad that Park Min-young shone brightly in this show and Ji Chang-wook is definitely a force to be reckoned with... SO awesome.

❤❤❤

This is just a personal gripe I have with some drama couples, it's nothing to take seriously. But sometimes when the leads finally become a couple, their interactions are too cute and seems a little forced, so much so that I become a bit uncomfortable LOL This was my stance when Junghoo and Youngshin finally got together and I didn't take to their scenes too well. It's not that I'm not a romantic person or anything cause that's not it, idek now why I'm like this. But Healer had a great run, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

I liked PMY in CH when I watched it (aka painstakingly suffered the whole week until it aired) but I have to say her character Chae Youngshin is second to none. She really got an amazing character to work with, and I know she's just as glad for the part,

Looking forward to more projects from the leads soon! And the queen herself, Kim Mi Kyung.

Yeah, sometimes technology makes us go bonkers.. sometimes it's just acting up n can't work.. no worries, everyone at least has experienced it once.
And I totally appreciate your drawing, even after so much troubleshooting.. :D

@Saema dear! ;)

I heard from @Teru that you spoke up in my defense over at the OT. I do not have the time to drop by there because of work and RL and also because I am not interested to read any more of the anti-Healer comments.

So, I wish to thank you for your kind and selfless act of defending me even though I think I do not deserve it. ;)

I am so touched and humbled by your willingness to come to my defense even though it opens you up to being attacked and ridiculed by the Healer-haters.

Please accept my sincerest appreciation for what you have done. ;)

I cannot repay you for what you did and so I can only pray for God to continue to shower you with His Blessings, Love, Guidance, Protection and everything good so that you will continue to be strong, kind-hearted, selfless and happy as you have always been. ;)

Love you, @Saema! ;)

*lots of hugs and kisses for you*

Fanderay, your paintings are always so beautiful and this one in particular is so dear to my heart. I knew instantly what scene it was from because I've re-watched it so many times and it feels like I'm re-watching it again it is so real to me. I could stare at your painting all day, it's mesmerising. I'm only sorry it caused you so much trouble!

I love how they are looking at each other, they are both quite cheerful but you can see the deep love they have for one another in their eyes. Both JCW and PMY absolutely nailed their roles and they couldn't have done a better job. I'm such a fan of both of them now. Okay, maybe I'm obsessed with JCW a little too. Like you said, the ease in which he transformed from one persona to another was so impressive, he completely won me over from day one (scene one).

This OTP will live in my heart forever. I already miss Healer so much.

Wow, Fanderay!!! You really do know how to capture picture-perfect moments in dramas. As someone who is not gifted in the arts, I truly appreciate your talents and all of the time and effort you spend to share them with us - and even moreso because you are using a computer program to make your beautiful works of art! Thank you SO very much!

You are absolutely right - there were tons of squee-worthy moments in Healer, but this one is a beautiful way to capture how comfortable JCW and PMY are together on-screen and why Healer fans just loved them to bits. I think most of us have become accustomed (whether good or bad) to the "usual" kdrama couples and OTPs that when an OTP like this comes along, it just knocks our socks off. I just hope other dramas and writers would take note of how an OTP can really be in a drama - how natural, how likeable, how sensible, and non-makjang - and how it can really work in the drama's favor. I'm an ajumma, so I don't get into all the real-life couple-shipping, but this is one on-screen couple that would really seem so cute and compatible and would have a great relationship in real-life. They looked like they were having such a great time filming. They just had the BEST chemistry I've seen in all of my drama-watching years. If nothing else, after filming Healer, I hope JCW and PMY remain great friends.

Thank you to DB, again, for your blog and for creating this fun and great place where we can all share our likes/dislikes of dramas with other kdrama lovers... God bless!

@KDRamaLuvr You are so right, PMY and JCW not only looked great together but they were so convincing as a couple.

Song Ji Na's writing of their dialogues really helped them to bring their characters and their relationship to life beautifully.

Such a beautiful painting. The eyes reveal so much love and joy.
I can see that your painting style has changed from the early days of posting. Personally, I think here you are hitting a good balance between resemblance, which you said you always strive for, and artistic flair. Kudos, and thank you for sharing w us your painstaking work.

It's a beautiful piece of art Fanderay, didn't understand much about your technical challenges but thank you for coming up with such an amazing masterpiece.
Yes our OTP is the team to beat, I just love everything about them. Even before they met , destiny was already rooting for them. Other OTP's pale in comparison, other than my husband and myself of course! :) Okay I am delusional. :)

Oh a Healer post and here I'm.

That's a beautiful painting. I loved that scene doubly so as they were together and Healer was mostly unharmed. Missing the drama loads, watched all 20 eps again .... what to do next? *sighhhhhh*

I doubt there will ever be another show like Healer or another pair as those two above. JCW and PMY were amazing as was most of the supporting cast.

Lovely picture and yes thank you Healer. Every week while watching Healer I always felt it was my healing time. I miss you everyday (currently having Healer withdrawal)
PMY-JCW had great chemistry together and it made the drama so much better. I think PMY was the perfect CYS and the same goes for JCW ^_^

Thank you Fanderay, for another lovely artwork for the Healer gallery.

That one is so comfortable with the other, that they can even tune out their surroundings, is what makes this couple so compelling a ship for me. This scene always takes me to the corresponding scene in Someday’s office with YS napping on JH’s lap while holding on to his arm and JH stating matter-of-factly that he is not ‘other people’ to YS. They are so one with each other. Love them both!

Fanderay~ so sorry to hear about this drawing turning into a time-consuming technical nightmare for you... I'd say your creative fix was a stroke of genius, because it looks perfect to me. I hope you can let that frustration go and just bask in all the love we have for you and this beautiful scene you've created for us. Your posts are always such a gift~ I'm so grateful for all the time and talent you put into them.

This drama will be on top of my list for a long long long time, until another drama as perfect and imperfect as this or even better come along!

Seeing this lovely moment makes me want to watch Healer all over again! Fanderay, Thanks for taking the time to capture the wonderful moments of Healer. I so agree that what's refreshing about this drama is that it does so little wrong - no noble idiocy, unnecessary misunderstanding between the OTP, just a functional, loving and comfortable relationship which glides through the most unusual of circumstances, like it's the most natural thing ever.

Sure the birth secrets and revenge whatnot are typical plot devices of melo-kdrama, but the way it was executed not in dragged out over-the-top makjangness is what makes this drama so watchable. Hurray to no crazy exes/ spoiled brats/ nice guy playing second fiddle. The only love triangle is the one between bong-soo/jung-hoo and YS :P

Look forward to more Korloful Palettes in the future!

Didn't JH (disguised as BS) do the same gesture to YS in the early episodes? He was adviced not to touch her / be away from her, which prompted him to do the exact opposite. It's cute how she is doing that now (although , to be honest, I can't remember why or what for).

It's a nice drawing -- thank you for it!

Like others, I'm missing Healer terribly.

It was when Min-ja told him not to get too personal with YS. They were preparing the camcorder for the interview with MY. He did it (literally) any way which was just so heart-stopping! :D

Reading this while listening to JCW's "I'll protect you" is the worst thing I've done today. I'm feeling so frustrated that Healer has already ended. But thank you for the great drama, Healer! You are forever loved!

I'll be watching this drama over and over again, repeatedly giggling even in front of my parents xD

Thanks for the wonderful art, Fanderay!

Love your arts esp everthing related to HEALER.
By the way>>> I'm not sure but so far as I could recall, is healer the drama that you revisited the most often?

I too, want to be healed from healer. But it may take a little bit longer time while until I can find peace.

Never been like this before.
It's because of the effect of this unperfect yet the most impressesive and enexpected drama and the two PMY+JCW and kodos to all the team.
