Kill Me, Heal Me: Episode 12

For a change, Do-hyun is not left cleaning up the trail of Se-gi’s destruction — instead, he actually gets to reap some benefit from his alter’s bold and avant-garde approach to problem-solving. He’s surprised to discover that he can even learn a thing or two from Se-gi.

But when you’re Cha Do-hyun, the laughs don’t last long enough, and although he suffers maybe one step back, it’s definitely at least six steps forward.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Se-gi speeds through a tunnel, his fight with Grandma Seo about saving the other child roiling in his mind. He struggles with a piercing pain in his head and the scene blacks out.

We snap to him by his father’s bedside. By his horrified reaction, Do-hyun must be back in control. Dad’s fingers twitch, and Do-hyun’s transported to a childhood memory: Little Do-hyun makes a mistake at his piano and freezes with fear. Dad picks him up by the scruff of his collar, while present Do-hyun gasps for breath and crashes to the floor, repeating his childhood cries: “I’m sorry father, I was wrong.”

Dad asks, “Who did I say would be punished if you keep failing to do it properly?” He throws Do-hyun into the basement, and both Do-hyuns, child and adult, cower. But this time, the memory continues. Another child crouches in the shadows, and little Do-hyun shields him/her against Dad’s advance with his own body. Evil Dad kept the child as a whipping boy?

The lucid part of Do-hyun registers the new memory. Who was the other child? The flashback releases him, but now the sight of his father causes the piercing pain again. Se-gi’s challenge seeps into his consciousness — to come out, to deal with his past, and find the people who made him this way. Do-hyun vows not to lose to Se-gi, but just as he pulls himself to his feet, men rush in and drag him away.

Do-hyun is thrown to his knees in front of Grandma. She hits him across the face for daring to threaten her son and regrets taking in a “mindless beast.” Do-hyun’s confusion is evident, and he cuts her short with an apology. But his manufactured story about wanting to see his dad, and his gratitude towards him for saving him in the fire, is in direct contradiction of everything Se-gi said earlier. Grandma notes the difference, not that it makes her any more forgiving. She tells him to get out of her sight.

He asks one more question. “When I was young…” Was I abused by my father? he finishes in his head. Out loud, he asks, “Was there another child in Seungjin Group, apart from me?” Grandma stills as she remembers Se-gi’s promise to give Seungjin to that child in reparation. You can see the wheels turning in her head.

Ri-on plays innocent with Ri-jin about the material she found on Do-hyun and Seungjin. He claims it’s all research for his next project, but secretly palms a photo of Min Seo-yeon (the dead first wife/Mom’s friend).

Ri-jin dislikes his subterfuge with Do-hyun, and he admits to pricklings of conscience, to the extent that he even sold the Omega rights to him.

He ushers her out, but she demands again to know why she can’t mention the Cha name or Seungjin to their parents, and calls him out on his shifty eyes. He deflects by pointing out that if they found out she was shacking up with a young man, there’d be trouble. They’re both rescued by Dad, who arrives to borrow her, and Ri-jin makes threatening faces at her brother behind Dad’s back.

Grandma, meanwhile, denies any knowledge of another child. Oh, are we playing dumb? On his way out, Do-hyun asks the housekeeper for his mom, because he has something to ask her. He’s surprised to find out she was sent abroad the day before — by Se-gi.

Ri-on burns the photo he pocketed earlier. Min Seo-yeon, smiling and pretty, is eaten up by the flames.

A taxi drops Do-hyun home. But when Do-hyun looks into the driver’s face, it’s replaced by his father’s. The hallucination sends him into a mindless panic, and he scrabbles at the doors in animal terror. He finally stumbles out and immediately throws up.

Inside, he looks for Ri-jin, but his house is empty. Chief Ahn arrives with a grim face, but seeing that Do-hyun is back makes him break into a big smile, and he tells Do-hyun not to worry, Ri-jin is on her way back.

Do-hyun heaves a big sigh of relief. He was worried that she might have been hurt, in case Se-gi had made good on his threat…which reminds him of Chae-yeon.

Chae-yeon wallows in bed and her mom asks her if she really wants to break off her engagement. She cries that she’s not certain if Ki-joon is the right man, but is interrupted by a call from Do-hyun. She runs away to take it.

Ki-joon fails to get hold of Chae-yeon, and he figures she must have had a hard time trying on dresses today. His mom says he should’ve come: “Standing in a dress without her man to see, do you know how depressing that is?” He simply brushes it off as marriage blues.

Chae-yeon asks Do-hyun why he keeps asking about her safety: “Are you my doctor?” Is he calling to push what he said last time? Do-hyun’s frown deepens on hearing about Se-gi’s proposal to tryst secretly, but he tells her that it wasn’t his true feelings so she should forget it. “Think of it as being bitten by a mad dog,” he says. With a last apology, he hangs up.

Chief Ahn promises to find out what happened between Se-gi and Grandma. He advises Do-hyun to become stronger, if he wants to overcome his “false image” (Se-gi) and protect his people. Do-hyun tasks him with looking into the existence of a second child at the Seungjin house, before the fire 22 years ago.

The family sees Ri-jin off, and Ri-on grumps about having to drive her. But when Dad offers instead, both siblings scream, “Nooooo!” and Ri-on frantically repents. Dad wonders why their friend Perry hasn’t come around, and Ri-on snatches away Dad’s phone before he can call him. The parents scold them, and the kids get away before they out themselves.

In the car, Ri-on complains about being dragged into her deception. But he tells her to bring Do-hyun over: “We’ll be his friends and family instead of you.” He figures that bearing that burden alone must be hard on her.

He asks about Se-gi, and says that he seems dangerous. On the contrary, he’s a total innocent, Ri-jin tells him, and he even has a cute side. She smirks evilly as she tells him there’s someone more dangerous than Se-gi for him to worry about, but doesn’t spoil him on Yo-na. Hahaha.

Do-hyun sees Chief Ahn off, and his car pulls out, Chae-yeon pulls in. She runs straight to Do-hyun and, to his confusion, throws her arms around him.

Ri-jin and Ri-on arrive just in time to see this cozy display. Ri-on interprets the scene in front of them as a melo, and asks his sister what her part is. Cursing Se-gi, she says, “I’m going to film Love and War.”

No kidding. Ri-jin the human cannonball flies at the couple, tearing them apart. Getting into her role and thinking Do-hyun is Se-gi, she rips into him for being a terrible human being and cheating on her with a woman who’s engaged. She turns to Chae-yeon and apologizes.

When Do-hyun tries to get a word in, Ri-jin seizes him by the ear and tells Chae-yeon, “I’ll throw this rubbish away” and drags him in, ear-first.

From his car, Ri-on coolly observes that her emotional line isn’t melo yet, and smiles to himself.

Inside, Ri-jin releases Do-hyun’s ear. She scolds “Shin-gun” roundly for violating their deal to preserve Do-hyun’s reputation, and threatens to deduct points if he continues. As Do-hyun begins to understand, his frown grows into a smile. She yells at him for that, too, and is impressed by his “acting” — she seriously thought he was Cha-gun just now… and slowly stutters to a stop as she realizes, “Cha-gun…?”

Solemn now, he takes her hand, holding it in both of his. “I’m Cha-gun. I came back,” he confirms. When she just stares, he wonders if she’s disappointed. In reply, she hits him, and starts bawling. In a long wail, she tells him how worried she was that he wouldn’t come back, and how she was afraid it was all her fault.

Do-hyun folds her into a hug, and promises, “I won’t be late again.” Amidst her tears, Ri-jin says if he’s really Se-gi pretending to be Do-hyun, he’s totally dead. He’s a little teary himself.

Holding her face in his hands, he presses a soft kiss to her forehead, and wipes the tears from her cheeks.

The next morning, Ri-jin reports to Do-hyun about what happened in his absence. He asks what went down between Se-gi and Chae-yeon, and her guess is that there was nothing. She tells him of Se-gi’s words to let her trust in him dictate her imagination, and Do-hyun notes she trusts him a lot. Ri-jin laughs that he’s being jealous, and not even denying it anymore. He just smiles happily.

He asks her to explain the Se-gi Wheel of (mis)Fortune, and hearing the result sends him into a pink haze of happiness. She reminds him that it was declared invalid, and he objects, “Why are you going against God’s will?” She explains that she bought Se-gi’s good behavior by annulling his loss on the wheel. And now it’s Do-hyun’s turn to make an effort, she says.

She persuades him to dress more consistently with his recent style (in other words, more like Se-gi). To placate his ego, she words it as keeping all his charms while adding Se-gi’s on top of them. But when she goes for the hair, he draws the line: The hair stays down.

At the company, Do-hyun is weirded out by his fervent female attention. She tells him that he’s got the appeal; he just didn’t know it himself. He’s then greeted by (HA!) Ki-joon’s secretary, who has reinvented himself in the image of Se-gi.

Once he goes on his way, Do-hyun can’t contain his amusement. That’s how he should be doing it, Ri-jin points out — with conviction.

Next they meet idol JI. Ri-jin gives him a quick run-down of yesterday’s events, and how Se-gi recruited him as a lead actor without Ki-joon’s approval. JI offers him an enthusiastic bow, and thanks him warmly for his encouragement. In fact, he was so moved by it that he voluntarily has declined the lead and taken on a smaller role, to build his acting from the bottom up. JI begs Do-hyun to show him again his rousing “You can doooooooo eeeeeeeeeettttt!” cry. After a few false starts, Do-hyun manages it, to everyone’s applause.

Ki-joon praises Do-hyun’s recent achievements in a staff meeting, and Do-hyun allows himself a small smile. Afterwards, he observes to Chief Ahn that he had been nervous today, but found out Se-gi actually did some good. Loyal Chief Ahn says it was a joint effort, and credits it to having devoted supporters. He attributes Se-gi’s fearless behavior to faith that Do-hyun will take care of the consequences. Not sure that’s a laudable thing, but okay. He also says that Ri-jin accomplished no mean feat in taming Se-gi.

Ki-joon comes by for a word with Do-hyun, and pushes him against a wall, demanding an explanation for his car being outside Chae-yeon’s house the other night. Do-hyun says there’s a misunderstanding, and clarifies that he no longer harbors any feelings for Chae-yeon.

“Hyung, you’ve become weak,” he observes. If they had conviction and trust in their relationship, he points out, they wouldn’t be affected by outsiders.

Ki-joon is updated by his secretary on Do-hyun’s life in the U.S. He used to have a close friend in college called Alex, but they cut ties before graduation. But strangely, at that time, he wired a large amount of money into Alex’s account. Ki-joon tells him to track this Alex down for more information.

Chae-yeon bumps into Ri-jin and wants a word too. Ri-jin apologizes for the night before, eliciting a sharp little smile from Chae-yeon. She tells Ri-jin not to be mistaken in Do-hyun’s intentions: He’s only using her to get Chae-yeon’s attention. This girl sure knows how to make it all about her.

Ri-jin reminds Chae-yeon that she’s already engaged to Ki-joon, and there’s nothing else to say. Do-hyun calls her just then, to come home, so she excuses herself.

Do-hyun and Chief Ahn watch silent video footage that the chief obtained of Grandma’s study. Do-hyun says this kind of behavior isn’t Se-gi’s usual style of troublemaking, so there must be a different reason. Chief Ahn brings out a recorder, which a flashback reveals he slipped into Se-gi’s pocket that night. Now, they listen to the audio of the encounter and the video makes sense.

Do-hyun fixes on Se-gi’s words about “that child” who should have been saved, and with increased perturbation, he compares it to the answers Grandma gave him.

In her study, Grandma also thinks about both conversations, and the difference between Se-gi and Do-hyun. She heads to Dr. Seok’s office.

Dr. Seok is pleased that someone from Do-hyun’s family is finally asking after him. She cuts to the chase and asks what’s wrong with him. He tells her about Do-hyun’s DID, and the likelihood of it being a result of unbearable childhood trauma. She looks shocked.

Do-hyun asks Chief Ahn if he found out who worked at the Seungjin house before the fire. The chief reports that, strangely, all those files are missing, as if they were deliberately erased.

Ri-jin arrives and Do-hyun takes her aside. He says he heard from Chief Ahn that she met with his mother, which she hadn’t told him about. He asks if she has any idea why Se-gi sent her away.

Ri-jin is reluctant to answer. Eventually, she admits that his mom had been a bystander to abuse, and tells him about how she uses that knowledge to survive in Seungjin. “Se-gi — that is, Cha Do-hyun, I think you were abused,” she says.

Do-hyun has a moment of anger, and asks her if she thought he was so weak that he couldn’t handle it. She demurs — she didn’t want to shock him with the sudden revelation. But Do-hyun tells her he already knew. He vows to find out more, and become stronger, “Until I no longer need an existence like Se-gi.”

In the bathroom, mirror-Se-gi issues his challenge to Do-hyun again. Isn’t it time to deal with the past now? This time, Do-hyun has answers.

Do-hyun: I agree. From now on, I’m thinking of finding my lost memories, and the truth they’re hiding.
Se-gi: Shall I do it, or will you?
Do-hyun: Of course, I’ll do it. Whatever the truth is that I must face, I’m not going to hide or run away now.

Se-gi: Do you have the courage to face that memory?
Do-hyun: Of course.
Se-gi: Can you handle that pain?
Do-hyun: Of course. Your memories will soon be my memories. The pain that you endured will soon be my pain. If you did it, I’ll do it too. Because you’ll soon be me. I’ll say it again: I will soon be you.

Do-hyun leaves, and Se-gi’s reflection remains.

The next day, he checks in with Chief Ahn, and finds out that Ki-joon’s dad and Do-hyun’s mom are also looking for that child. Their conversation is cut short when Grandma summons Do-hyun to her house.

He wonders if it’s something to do with his dad — but the very thought of him brings on a spasm of terror, and Ri-jin rushes to his side. He takes some time to calm himself down.

Do-hyun enters Grandma’s study. He resolutely begins to tell her about his condition, but she cuts him off. She tells him to give up his company position and go back to the States, because she can’t leave Seungjin to him when she doesn’t know which person he is at any given time.

He’s astonished that she knows, and she only pours scorn on him, calling him a weakling and a monster. Ugh.

He asks, “Did you even once think of me as your grandson, Chairwoman? Not as Father’s stand-in, but your grandson, your family, or a person? Did you ever think of me that way?”

Ri-jin descends the steps into the wine cellar — aka the basement of horrors — on an errand for the housekeeper. Oh no, this is going to be bad. She finds the wine, but as she turns back, the room darkens around her and the sound of rubbing chalk fills her ears. In the furthest recess of the cellar, she sees a vision of a child scribbling on the wall, discarded toys lying around her.

“What… is this?” she thinks. The figure turns around, and Ri-jin looks at her own younger self.

Do-hyun informs the chairwoman that he’ll stay in Korea — he has things to do. “What can you have to do but receive treatment?” she asks him, full of disdain.

But that’s exactly what he means to do. He tells her he will recover his lost memories, and put his shattered heart back together, to see what kind of picture it makes.

“I am not a stand-in for my father. I am not a dog that will guard Seungjin, nor am I a monster,” he tells her. “I am just Cha Do-hyun.”

COMMENTS

Badass. That’s a declaration of war, and we arrive at Do-hyun’s great turning point. He finally knows whom he must fight, and it isn’t himself. It’s exciting because until now, he’s been so wrapped up in fighting Se-gi that he didn’t realize the (literally) self-defeating nature of that battle.

The latest mirror-encounter hauntingly bookends Se-gi’s one-sided conversation in Episode 10. But increasingly, as the walls between their consciousnesses dissolve, Se-gi gets through to him. It says something about how closely related the two of them are, and how much they mirror each other. As equals and opposites, Se-gi’s strengths are Do-hyun’s weaknesses, and vice versa. So this time, with the clarity of knowing who to point his sword at, he hears and answers.

The bathroom-setting of these encounters started off as a seemingly random choice. But there’s a reason why their most significant face-offs happen there, as it becomes the perfect collision of metaphor and their internal reality. With nobody but the two of them (who are really one person), it’s as close and private as if it were in their own heads. They face each other at their most stripped-down (again, also literally), the mirror marking the barrier between their internal and external existences. If reflections are distortions, theirs are becoming increasingly truer. When Do-hyun tells his image, “I will soon be you,” it’s the crest of his conviction — the moment he fully believes in himself.

Now that he’s chosen the path of fighting, I’m glad to say goodbye to the Do-hyun who is always sorry. Wasn’t it great to see Do-hyun have fun? It’s still stealthy half-smiles and private amusement, but the lightening of his whole being was unmistakable and so, so welcome. It’s like watching him discover the world for the first time, and it’s so warming after how invisibly he’s lived so far. Even though they’re small things, like waving at the ladies or doing a war-cry for JI, for him they’re big changes. He holds himself apart from the world, living under the cloud of his condition, but he’s beginning to take tentative steps back into it.

Perhaps because we’re finally seeing him change, it’s more evident than ever that Do-hyun is missing a lot of pieces. With just a shard of memory restored, the very thought of his father raises a primal reaction in him of panic and terror. The abuse has frozen him into a trap he’s never been able to escape from, because it’s in his own mind — a loop of terrible fear, created by his dad to control him. Evil Dad is a classic abuser, with his sorrowful tone and effortless reframing of all things as Do-hyun’s fault. You made me hurt you, says the abuser. The whipping-boy aspect is even more twisted. Until now, his dissociation cushioned him from having to deal with the memories, but if he’s going to seek out more, he needs to cope with his buried programming.

I’ve wondered before whether Do-hyun’s and Ri-jin’s fates could have been reversed. Ri-jin has suppressed the memory as well, but she doesn’t suffer the way Do-hyun does. Why? The obvious answer that we now know is that they didn’t have the same abuse experience, and that may be why she has a fight response to crisis, which as an adult, she’s turned into efficiency and management. That’s not to say Do-hyun is weak, simply that the way they process trauma is different.

But Do-hyun has a critical ingredient which I think may well be at the root of his dissociative response: guilt. The guilt added to his fear creates the unbearable internal dissonance that causes him to shut down, while new identities to peel off to absorb it. Cha Do-hyun is such a principled character, it’s easy to see he had the same kind personality as a child. And as a child, the punishment matrix his father created was one that targeted Do-hyun’s most core trait, his sense of responsibility. And his child-self wouldn’t have known that he wasn’t to blame — either for his father’s “suffering” or for the punishment meted on Ri-jin. I honestly think his fracturing was in some sense inevitable. But there’s hope — adult Do-hyun knows better. He can deprogram.

I’m burying this part in the middle so I don’t start or finish on an angry note, because…what the hell, Dr. Seok? I don’t expect ethical perfection or absolute realism from dramas and I wouldn’t normally complain about it, but from a show that’s done such a sensitive job otherwise, I’m outright angry with Dr. Seok/the writer. Patient confidentiality is actually small beans, because more importantly, Dr. Seok knows that Do-hyun’s priority is to hide his condition from his family. Any halfwit practitioner knows that if abuse occurs, the chances of it being perpetrated by a family member are high. So telling Grandma is not merely counterproductive, but potentially quite dangerous — more so when you consider that a chaebol family has both need and resources to hush up an inconvenient scandal.

So why Dr. Seok’s common sense flew out the window, I don’t know. Grandma could have found out in any number of ways, and she had enough firsthand proof to figure it out herself (and didn’t she?). Badly done, Show. Badly done, indeed.

I want to talk about Ri-jin, especially since I don’t want her to get underrated just because Ji Sung is killing it (he really is). With her innate ability to get things done and function in crisis, she’s Do-hyun’s anchor. She gives him back his missing time, and is the bridge between him and his other selves. It’s only when the crisis passes that she lets it out. So when she breaks down after confirming he’s really Do-hyun, it’s the same driving emotion as in her rooftop breakdown after Yo-sub’s suicide attempt. She actually becomes one of the pieces Do-hyun has to keep picking up after his alters come out. But as long as he comes back, that’s enough for her. I love this aspect of Ri-jin that doesn’t need Do-hyun, but chooses him.

I have a soft spot for the conceit of that person you allow yourself to be weak in front of — it requires such a huge amount of trust for a person to be okay with putting down their innermost walls. Ri-jin is that person to Do-hyun, but he is also that person to her. Although circumstance forces their hands, Ri-jin and Do-hyun still actively choose to be open and frank with each other, and to me, those are the best types of relationships. If it’s grounded in trust, it will survive the trials of mental illness, meddling, and soulless matriarchs.

on Dr. Seok: I think if the condition is putting people in severe danger, it is somewhat justified to tell them.

When a doctor feels that a patient is putting himself in danger he has to hospitilize/intern him and that's it ! It's a crime punished by law to tell medical secret !

and he was happy that someone finally came and asked about DH pff.. so why didn't he telle KJ when he asked ?

And what's make me even angrier at Dr.Seok is that DH pulled his courage and was going to tell grandma and he just took that opportuinity from him!

Yeah, here the rule goes that you can never divulge information ever. If you feel a patient is danger to himself or otherwise that you forcibly hospitalize them and take steps from there. But there are numerous people with mental conditions and you can't reveal information just because the condition itself has the potential to go to a bad place.

This scene was eye-brow raising; does Korea not have something akin to HIPPA or at least confidentiality laws? Punch did a similar thing by giving out health info willy nilly. I am assuming this medical info blabbing is just a dramaland thing, but it comes off as less than genuine. Lazy writing.

i think it's because Kijoon is not an immediate family.. remember when he mentions his name... the doctor didnt respond and when he says he is DH's cousin he somehow realizes something and didnt tell him the truth.. and when grandma went to see Dr. Seok he was happy to see that someone finally came to consult him about DH after 11? years... thinking someone is now concern regarding DH's behavior so i think because grandma is an immediate family that he tells her the truth since DH carries and suffers the condition alone... but idk its just me tho..

He would've lost his license to practice in the US. A husband can't even get info on his wife who is next of kin. Once a minor is 15 (at least in my state) they also have a right to keep their medical history private from parents. Grandma is not even next of kin, his mama was skipped and even they need permission from DH before his medical info is shared. If this was an American show it would be considered makjang. I think it is just as crazy for ROK as well because their health care is world class. And I have watched "soaps" all my life. American and British and there is a way grandma could've found out (a roundabout crazy way that normal humans couldn't) that didn't make that MD lose his common sense. Every scene is responsible. Everyone puts a seatbelt on. They only talk on the phone hands free. No one texts and drives. But someone who may need to talk to a mental health doctor may now think that there isn't any confidence in a mental health doctor. Yes its a story and a drama but I hate the stigma. When our bodies are sick we go see a doctor. Its responsible and the right thing to do without stigma. It should be the same with our mental health and it should be portrayed that way

I had the same question: In the U.S., HIPPA rules. But, based on what I have seen, in Korea it seems that if you are the patient's immediate family/Guardian ("bohoja") then you can consult with the family member about the patient's health condition. Here, I agree that it was surprising and made me angry. He actually knew that DH went to great lengths to keep his condition a secret from everyone, save for RJ and Secretary Ahn, even making RJ sign a confidentiality agreement, so what gave? I feel like the writers really messed up and just found a lazy way to reveal DH's secret to Grandma. Very disappointing, writers.

One more day to go :)
I agree here^. It depends on the situation. Maybe the doctor feels that it is time a family member really have to know DH's condition.
Anyways, I'll just have faith with our writer-nim coz this drama isn't more on the realistic side(e.g. Misaeng) and more on the romcom-mystery, He can do whatever he wants with the plot. I'll just absorb what's in store for us and enjoy every minute of it :)

I'm sure there's a logical reason for Dr Seok to digress. I'm trusting the writer coz I've not seen anything that's been inconsistent so far....well at least until episode 12 when the last person Do Hyun wanted his condition known was served that information on a plate! But we have more episodes to go and I'm hoping the good doctor will redeem himself in my eyes.
Ji Sung is killing it! He's killing me. I have watched episodes 11 and 12 so many times this week (the void left by Healer only had me holding on to KMHM as nothing current is good enough). I love his characters! I love this show. Tomorrow is not soon enough.

Wait wait wait! I saw something inconsistent..... In ep 1. Just re watching the series (so love this drama that's why) if personalities don't remember what the other did, how did Segi remember to go back and beat up that guy who beat Do Hyun up? Was this discussed in previous recaps? I might have missed something here. All the more reason to re watch this whilst I wait for tomorrow. Lol!
pS: and that eerie smile he had when he turned into Segi was awesome! Didn't remember that!

I think it's only Do Hyun couldn't remember what his personalities did. His personalities know what they do when they take over Do Hyun and all of them have Do Hyun's memories. Remember the "Nana" scenes when Yona says Nana is playing with the bear (bad example) and Yo Sub can draw 6 people graffiti?

I'm guessing Segi saw bits and pieces of the incident while Do Hyun was beaten up or maybe he has his own way of finding out what happened..

I doubt the personalities know of any happenings outside of their own time, but are all aware of each others existence. Otherwise they'd totally judge Ri Jin about what happened between her and Do Hyun and can you imagine how angry Segi would be if he knows how close Do Hyun and Ri Jin are? The kisses?

Indeed! It disgusted me how readily he told her, like he's been waiting for her to walk through that door. It's not consistent of his character, but then again, his character seems useless now with Ri-Jin taking over. What was his real rationale for telling her? It's not like Grandma d'Evil looked overly concerned when she came to see him.
Like you said, badly done, Show. Evil Grandma could've used one of Ri-Jin's useless colleagues to gladly act as a mole for information, but instead the show chose to have hear it from the doctor himself. Nonsensical indeed! How are we supposed to trust in him now?

It is here again yay! before another Episode tomorrow :)

I am more excited for this show than the Lunar New Year.lol

By they way, can I applaud the director for the taxi scene and the basement scene?! :)

Oh gosh!! I was so scared during that time that DH thought the taxi driver was his father.I was so surprised with that scene. And I loved the part when Ri Jin finally found the bottle of wine, when she slowly turned, the atmosphere became black and white and she finally remembered herself back then, drawing sketches in the wall. Maybe that was her only past time then, when she was locked in the basement. Letting her imagination run wild in contrast to her physical self that is trapped inside.

Hi Ara... I am a big fan of Korean dramas which is why I'm curious about Korea. I know this is completely off this topic but can u please tell me if you don't mind, what do u (and other Koreans do) on lunar day? I understand it's a big day but I have no idea what it is... Is it something like Christmas? Do u decorate houses and make sweets and distribute gifts? I'm really curious. Thank you ?

0

And by the way agree with the horror scene (taxi) ... I literally was off my seat ????. By far the best drama this year... If it doesn't win anything especially Ji sung I'm probably going to cry the rest of my life... Love u Ji sung oppa! ?

0

@lovekworld
Lunar new year is a three-day event in korea. It is the same as January 1 (New Year) of others and Chinese New Year. Most people return to their hometowns during this day because it is celebrated with the family like it is a family day. Most wear formal clothing during this day (some wear hanbok) and celebrate with food preparation like tteokguk, etc.

0

@lovekworld
wanted to add what aria said
but actually I celebrating Chinese new year because my family is half Chinese, it is in the same date
but we don't really follow the exact tradition
we just have gathering when all family came to the eldest son place to celebrate it together
wearing formal clothes and just meeting with relative

0

Hi Ara... Thank u so much for your reply. I get the idea of it now... Sounds Like a fun few days! Well I hope you have a lovely lunar celebration with your family???

0

Gosh I only noticed both (aria and Ara) have similar name (oops! Sorry!!) my reply applies to you both. Thank you Aria and thank you Ara... They both sound a bit similar. ?

0

@Aria
Agreed. That taxi scene was just heartbreaking. Parents are supposed to protect and here we have a father who scarred his child for a lifetime. I hope the writer-nim will do the right thing and everybody who was involved in the abuse scenario would be punished. And I was just shocked at Do-Hyun grandmother's response to the DID revelation. That women has the nerve to call Do-Hyun a monster after being a silent witness to the whole abuse scenario and knowing full well what it has done to this poor guy. I can forgive all the other characters in this show but the grandmother and Do-Hyun's mother, these two despicable human being, I can't ever forgive them.

You can applaud the director. He deserves it. He's bringing out the best on the casts (they're already awesome but he's not just making the most of the casts' talent and the OTP chemistry but he's maximizing those strengths! Having watched the same OTP on Secret I'm amazed at how these two are even better here). I watch the BTSses and I'm in awe at how together they created the scenes we saw. Amazing.

I really love how Do Hyun declare war to both Grandma and Segi. Honestly, it felt so good! I totally share the same statement with Saya. It really feels like he is see the world for the first time again and the result is encouraging him to be more confident. Can't help but give a pat at a back on Segi to give him this environment. :D

But I couldn't get over how HILAROUS it is when Rijin pull Dohyun's ears. I didn't see it coming at all. It is going to make a huge impression.

I got a shock that Dr Seok actually told a Grandma. It is so strange. Could it be do Hyun never once told him that Grandma is someone that should never know about his problem? But it is making Dr Seok stupid for not figuring it out. I hope the writer can give some sort of answer to it.

The breach of trust and confidentially is the one think that made me enjoy the episode less, used as a plot devise, why refuse to tell a cousin but the grandma is suddenly okay to tell? That was some major plot inconsistency and really annoyed me.

Precisely. I can understand why Dr Seok feel the need to tell grandma the truth but I couldn't understand why he said it so easily. It is like "it's time to move on and let the evil knows about it". If grandma happens to see the truth and caught him by surprise e.g saw segi's photo doing crazy things, I totally can see why. But this is really a bad way. I hope Dr Seok can redeem himself in the later episode. Using Rijin's & Segi's line, "Dr Seok, is your Iq a single digit?" |( ̄3 ̄)|

You guys have to remember that the doctor actually needs his family's help to help him. He has a gap in his memory as a child that only people around him (and shin se gi but he is. It talking) can help him fill. As the doctor said he has been waiting for someone in his family to be worried enough to come and find him.

Yes I do, I am complaining about the execution. He made it too easy. The person is Grandma not Do Hyun's Mum. It is clear to him that Grandma and Do Hyun don't share a good relationship and it's like the moment grandma ask about Do Hyun, he jumps into the conclusion that she cares for Do Hyun? Shouldn't him be more weary why grandma's sudden change of attitude?

0

Required fields are marked *

Then he should have asked Do-hyun for permission if it was to fill in gaps or get family involved as part of the treatment. Your therapist can't go around telling what was told in confidentiality to even your family members atleast not without consulting with the patient, especially if the patient is an adult. Such a huge breach of trust, which is what a relationship between you and your therapist is built on.

And if the reason was family must be told if it puts others in danger, why tell only now. Atleast now with ri-jin's help, he's managing his condition better.

-Patient confidentiality is actually small beans, because more importantly, Dr. Seok knows that Do-hyun’s priority is to hide his condition from his family-

I see that actual word or Dr. Seok is
- I had wait really long for this to happen -
It mean that if the actual related family (the one line family tree, not a cousin) came to me, I would told them what happen

I think he has that right because now Se-Gi and others are appear and risking Do-Hyun, Ri-Jin and was attempted to kill Dr. Seok too

the confidentiality can be breach when there's a certain element that makes people in danger

1. Dr. Seok never actually want ri jin help do-hyun consider how bad everything was before (ri jin get involved in gang, in bomb, being stalked by segi, se gi threat him, se gi choked another doctor, and se gi that wan't to put Do-Hyun to sleep) and she helps him, and se gi indeed has threaten the grandma (which is a 3rd party that need an answer too)

2. Suicidal attention by Yo-Seob, if there's any clear hint about suicide, the dr. can tell the information about the mental issues because do-hyun himself is in danger

I understand it violate the privacy but for 11 years of being a dangerous man, I think it just the time the family (1 person) knew about his condition
if you are him and seeing how ri jin cope up with all alters and some bruises, how not you come to conclusion it is dangerous
it's not done well in the drama but even if just like plot device but a mental health actually can't treat well if family doesn't knew what is the root which in this case came from the family itself,
the dr doesn't knew where the abuse come because se-gi doesn't want to cooperate with him, and the other alter maybe doesn't even like him or care about him,

so for me it makes sense,
we just see se-gi with ri jin and sec ahn which is person he likes but what if he meets other people?

thanks a lot and sometimes it is looks cheap (because the grandma portray as bad guy here)
but if I imagine that in reality, even if the grandma is the bad guy here (at least she doesn't want to hurt do-hyun physically and had the right in family registry about him), she might be hurt too, see how bad everything turn out to be for do-hyun

and also 11 years history of very rare mental issue with possibility of death cause by some alter, and recent attempted suicide that also hurt ri-jin, that one is clear warn

it just the past do-hyun is too afraid of the outcome and see himself as monster for what he become without try to face what is happen inside him

I believe so ara, even in the previous episode Dr. Seok encourage RJ to study abroad because he knows how bad the situation can be, all we can do now is trusting the writer to give what best plot for the show...because in reality even hard to find such a perfect situation...but in dramaland lets just enjoy the show and go with the flow..as for me, we love the show not because its perfect, but the show is perfect because we love it, my love for this show is blind..LOL

I am still not convinced, he knows nothing about CDH's family or the circumstances, how risky to tell someone without consulting CDH or at least Rijin to insure that the person being told has the best intentions for the patient's welfare. I found this plot devise really disappointing and not worthy of such a great show.

Required fields are marked *

I see it done poorly.
then Dr.Seok doesn't knew what he did to grandma and if he doesn't knew about his family it even more clear he can do that, because family has the right to know about it if they asked,
and ri jin wasn't actual his doctor because she isn't a certified doctor herself and can be consider a victim if his best intention is to help her also (we see how he care about her before)

the show didn't do it well but it is contrast to the past do-hyun is too afraid of the outcome and see himself as monster for what he become without try to face what is happen inside him, his grandma might feel sorry

11 years history of very rare mental issue with possibility of death cause by some alter, and recent attempted suicide that also hurt ri-jin, and some recent case involved bombing, that one is clear warn, he is dangerous, and by law he can do that, and by a dr that concern about the other dr. I think he can

I just want to make clear that a dr has that right when it involved the safety of other specific persons (in this case, do-hyun and ri-jin)

0

Required fields are marked *

Actually even family members shouldn't have the right to know, because a person's physical and mental condition is his business and no one else's. Also, without any real evidence of the patient being a danger to himself/others, how would the doctor know that the family member reporting it is telling the truth?

Furthermore, we (and Dr Seok) know that Do Hyun is a responsible man. If there had been even the slightest possibility of danger to anyone, including to himself, and especially to Ri Jin, wouldn't Do Hyun have locked himself away a long time ago?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

what I mean is about what happen now after do-hyun meet ri jin
and we witness the event is all dangerous and harm her physically (he went to ER 3 time before being his secret mediator and being kidnap in 3rd ep)

-If there had been even the slightest possibility of danger to anyone, including to himself, and especially to Ri Jin, wouldn’t Do Hyun have locked himself away a long time ago?-

that is what we see as a audience and see the whole things, but sure do-hyun locked himself but then a violent alter that already tried to kill yourself, hurting ri-jin (intended or not but because of him and his DID, not only as do-hyun, ri jin get hurt by yo-na, yo seob, se-gi 1st appearance),
then 1 attempted suicide and that happen less than 3 month?
yes, do-hyun is responsible man but is in danger if one day yo-seob just commit suicide without telling anyone

in our pov, dr.seok can't tell them that way, but as a character that constantly reminding ri jin safety and told do-hyun to get actual treatment
he cam get both by doing this, but i agree it done poorly

0

And if Dr Seok thought that Do Hyun was dangerous, he should have done something about it earlier. Do Hyun is not the kind of guy that would defy his doctor. Just advising Ri Jin to go to Johns Hopkins is not going to prevent the supposedly dangerous patient from harming other people that he comes into contact with.

This is not to say, of course, that Se Gi is not dangerous. He really might have killed his father if Do Hyun hadn't come back. But the point here is that Dr Seok didn't have proof of this, and therefore had no right to reveal details of Do Hyun's condition to the grandmother.

0

Do Hyun is a responsible man, but he's not in the right mental state to make decisions on his own anymore. He can't control when his alters appear and what they will do. Remember that Se Gi got RJ into trouble multiple times and he nearly killed doctor Seok, how is that not considered "slightest possibility of danger to anyone"?

0

I do understand your reasoning ara, but the thing is that Dr.Seok knew the lengths Dohyun went to in order to procure a 'secret' physician for him, with the sole intention of keeping his illness a SECRET from others; including and especially his family. So as his doctor, he shouldve atleast asked Dohyun for his permission before outing his sectret even if he was doing it out of concern for thers. Furthermore, on an earlier occasion Dr.Seok had decsribed DoHyun to Rijin as someone who had to keep his condition -one that requires familial and moral support to get through- a well guarded secret from his own family. So he clearly knew that it had to stay a secret. But then he suddenly takes a turn and spills it to the one person Dohyun has tried so hard to keep it from. It doesn't make sense.

I knew and I get that, It wasn't a good move, it give leverage to the bad guy
it just the situation change in his POV in my opinion but by his word, he wanted to told it from long time but do hyun never allow him, it is the time because if he reach them 1st he break that confidentiality and ri jin should knew that she can't tell the family, reality shows that he is mentally ill and dangerous in society, even ri-on doesn't want ri jin get involved after knowing he has DID

before, it only harm him, dr and sec ahn and some random people,
but now, it out of his hand, he has no strength against any alter, ri jin got harm, do hyun is one that requires familial and moral support to get through,
se-gi came for 2 days in row, getting stronger, and all that happen in just 3 month?

sorry if that is makes more sense for me, because he certainly ill and need help, if it by this way, let it be

Thank you Ara for this comment. In the context of the drama, I can see why it irks the viewers because the reveal seems to be too easy and it's inconsistent with Dr. Seok character we have known so far (not just a doctor but a trustworthy friend of Do Hyun who understands his struggle to keep a secret from his family). However, in real life, someone like Do Hyun could be admitted to the hospital involuntarily due to the seriousness of his mental disorder.

Sorry for harping on this, but I should add that if Do Hyun is not in the right mental state to make decisions and Dr Seok knows this, then either Dr Seok has been incredibly remiss and/or irresponsible, or - in letting Do Hyun prevent him from taking action - he is seriously ineffectual as a doctor.

And if Do Hyun himself knows this but is still allowing himself to run around putting people in danger, then I'm afraid he is not the responsible person that I thought he was. (Though I guess he knew that none of his alters would "harm women and children", and that Yo Sub was suicidal but hadn't actually tried killing himself yet…?)

I just prefer to take the action when this drama happen as
this last few months after do hyun back to Korea, when dr. seok is no longer treated him, and they haven't met for some time, the alter suddenly line up to appear and the alter that doesn't want to cooperate/listen to dr.seok, do hyun is afraid man back then, too kind to not let others worry and blamed himself

and all of that start/change by se gi ambition to come back,
that's why do-hyun can't leave korea but stay in his prison-like home if not in the office, for me he is still a responsible man by doing the best to clear the mess, made cy stay from him, be a good man in office, accepted ri jin rejection, and wanted to get a proper treatment after 3 months,

yo-na can harm woman, bomb can kill anyone
for killing himself, yo seob doesn't succeed but then ri-jin bleed in the head because he called her before jump and she helps him, ^^

sorry for taking this too real, maybe cause I think it is real in some way

The thing is, we don't know exactly what Do Hyun's mental condition is when he was in the US. Perhaps during that time, his alters didn't pose as much danger as they do now in Korea; therefore there're no reasons to hospitalize him involuntarily. The fact that he can hide it from all of his friends while leading a relatively normal life as a student shows that he still somewhat has his mental disorder under control. However, the story is totally different in Korea. As Dr. Seok noted in the 2nd episode, Se Gi was getting stronger and bolder. He nearly strangled an innocent person to death. He wasn't content with just being alter anymore, he wants to get rid of Do Hyun to claim the body for himself. Do Hyun and his alters continually dragged Ri Jin into their troubles and she ended up in the emergency room twice during those encounters. Yo Seob was almost successful in committing suicide if it hadn't been for RJ's timely intervention. In short, there are enough red flags showing that Do Hyun is no longer mentally capable to control his life. He's posing danger to himself and to the people around him (remember that Se Gi also kidnapped his unconscious father, among other things).

It's unfair to judge a person who struggles with mental illness regarding "responsibility" with normal standards. You have to take into consideration the social stigma and pressure the mentally-ill patients have to suffer to understand why they are reluctant to come to terms with their illness and receiving treatment. Do Hyun has tried the best he can to clean up the messes his alters created and he does seek for treatment within his capacity.

0

Required fields are marked *

But then why didn't Dr Seok or Do Hyun do something the moment Se Gi tried to strangle Dr Seok, or the moment Yo Seob tried to kill himself, if one or the other believed that these were red flags? Even if Do Hyun was "reluctant to come to terms with his illness", surely Dr Seok should know better? Why wait will the grandmother visited?

0

I suppose the main problem for me is that the writer can't have it both ways. If Doctor Seok is going to tell the grandmother about Do Hyun's DID, then Dr Deok must believe that Do Hyun is a danger to others/himself. But if he believes that, then he should have done something earlier, especially as the strangling and the suicide attempts took place before Ri Jin agreed to work with Do Hyun. For a start, knowing that Ri Jin (as @ara pointed out above) is relatively inexperienced and not really D Hyun's doctor, he should have taken her out of Do Hyun's house the moment he found out that she was there, instead of letting Do Hyun's alters (as @Lilly said) drag her into all kinds of trouble. Rather than letting her live with Do Hyun, he should have worked with her, Secretary Ahn and Do Hyun himself to manage Do Hyun's condition in a safer way.

And even if Dr Seok felt that he needed to consult a family member, because Do Hyun is apparently too far gone to appeal to (like @Lilly said, he is not in a mental state to make decisions, and cannot come to terms with his condition), why consult the grandmother? Of course Dr Seok was not to know that the grandmother was just going to send Do Hyun back to the US, where he'd continue being a danger to himself/others, but as a doctor he should have been more careful about which family member to involve in such a sensitive matter.

All in all, I agree with everyone that it's the inconsistency that is the main problem. I love this show dearly, but I do feel that this inconsistency has the potential to unravel quite a lot of plot, and even characters' motivations. What disturbs me most is that, if Dr Seok is right to tell the grandmother, it follows that Do Hyun is really dangerous (you guys have almost convinced me - ironically, I'd just been accepting Do Hyun's alters as being cartoonishly eccentric), but has been too weak or unstable to adequately protect those around him.

0

I think his word say that
he wait until someone from his family asked about him, he wait until someone realize something wrong and he wait for the real family relation who asked him

it is his concern from long time ago but because he respect do-hyun, he didn't want to just go knock on his family door and said that, or just told the police,

maybe he knew something had happen so the grandma herself came to him (he has state how powerful the family is in front of ri jin),
and this is happen after yo seob suicide attemp, and this things is heavily because asian context when family have the authority to knew the illness when asked, (idk of all asian country) but legalk guardian can have that information

but thanks for all that understand and comment , what we did maybe small but hope someone can realize that this things about patient confidentiality can be handle in better way,

and happy holiday ^^ (for the one who celebrating)

No, Dr Seok violated major privacy laws and ethics. He would get his license yanked in the US. Even if one of the personalities is suicidal, it takes a court order to get him committed (to the hospital) for his safety and the safety of others. Grandma never expressed fear for herself or others. Do Hyun would have to sign permission for Dr. Seok and Grandma to talk. On the other hand, Ri Jin should never discuss Do Hyun with Ri On for the same privacy reasons. Talk about patients at home is done in generalities without names. Docs take patient confidentiality very seriously.

You said the key sentence here "in the US". Korean laws are not the same at all. Family heads have authority over everyone even when they're "healthy". How many times have we seen a family member forcefully put in a psychiatric hospital against their will in a drama ? It's not something writers imagine it actually happens and doctors don't even ask questions.

True about it being US vs. Korean law. Anyone familiar with the Korean mental health system to comment? I think Dr. Seok made a wrong move and violated trust and privacy.

There is no expectation of privacy in Korean healthcare. They'll tell your guardian before you when you're sick, they'll even tell your employer if they ask. People with mental health problems avoid seeing doctors because there's a special code that shows up on your insurance records. Code F means you've been treated for mental health and it makes it difficult for you to get a job.

My thought is Grandma is CDH's legal guardian so Dr. Seok felt it was ok to tell her. Additionally, she holds his job in her hands, unlike Cha KiJoon. If he wants to keep his department open he needs Seungjin Group money, that's how CDH got ORJ fired for 3 months.

0

Thanks for pointing that out. Every country has a different law with regads to that. I can fully attest to that because I'm from the Healthcare sector and have experienced working in Asia and now in the US. As far as I can say this drama is right on track. I just don't have the time to comment and explain things for now coz I'm working (on break) yayyyyyy

I dont know much about law in both countries, but as one who live and breathe in Asia, there are some points that I want to say here, please forgive of my lacking in English:

1. Some of countries in Asia dont have an Established Health System Care yet, but we do try to build one
2.Confidentality is not a big issue here regarding one condition
3.Mental illness is not a big issue here too, because we have to deal with many kind of more dangerous physical diseases, and many people here still dont differentiate mental illness, the patients are just simply judged and treated as crazy people
4.Family is very important here, what I mean here is not just an immediate family, but all the relatives you have, we must obey the elders and sometimes we have to follow their advices where we like it or not, and there's no much room for a secret in this kind of family bond I guess

I hope that Aoi can explain better than I do, as we here lets just watch the show with a clear mind, I do like USA show as much as kdrama, exp show that has a mental illness as a lead such as Perception, Monk etc.
By watching those I'm glad that I have a broaden view about everything, different countries, with different law, cultures, food, drama, etc. And the finding is so exciting.
I guess thats why God create as different, if we are all the same I think we will bore to death literary...LOL

Oh sweetie you've explained it well and covered the basics. Culturally, a vast difference between Asian and Westerners. I myself is a product of multiethnicity. So I guess, I can say that I've known and experienced both worlds. Let us not forget that this is Korean Drama :).. I'd love to chat some more, but my 10 mins. break is over LOL.. laters and Thank you @lara4liwa

I would have to disagree about mental illnes. It is a big issue in Asia. It is hidden like a shameful secret. I'm Asian American and have many family members in the mental health field both in the US and Asia. Most Asian patients hide their diagnosis from everyone but immediate family. They will usually not get treatment until a major crisis point.

0

Actually you don't need a court order to have them committed - I mean you do long term, but you can still hold them for 2 or 3 days without a court order if a medical person says they're a danger to themselves or others (they do then need to seek legal stuff if they want to keep them).

A woman where I grew up (a nurse) actually did this to two of her exes before being caught....she was clearly the crazy one.

I loved the scene when Ri Jin realizes CDH is back and am sooo disappointed with Dr. Seok for spilling the beans in front of Sour Grampypants.

Am enjoying CDH's change, albeit its just baby steps atm ... still ... as Ri Jin said his 'that's a relief' is better than his usual 'I'm sorry' stance. Can't wait for him to fight back in Se-gi style.

Thanks for the recap, been eagerly waiting for it.

Yes that was a fantastic scene! It was amazing how effortlessly they managed to undercut the tear-jerking, rather melodramatic nature of the reunion with the hilarious accusations that Ri Jin kept flinging at Do Hyun ("If this is Mr Shin impersonating Mr Cha, you're dead meat!" etc).

I'm excited to see that Do Hyun and Se Gi are kinda-sorta working together at the moment. :)

Makes me squee like a crazed otaku, because I think that Do Hyun and Se Gi could have a fabulous bromance (albeit odd) while Do Hyun remained fractured, and a few of Se Gi's personality traits would make Do Hyun an even more appealing character.

Why does this show keep getting better and better?

:D

I mean, besides the Dr. Chipmunk fiasco which had me screaming expletives into my pillow in the wee hours of the morning, this show has left me quite satisfied and HUNGRY for more.

Ji Sung is KILLING this part! I fangirl flail all over the place when he switches into one of his alters and the hijinks that ensue leave me grinning like an idiot or laughing out right.

And Hwang Jung Eum hits all the right notes when she isn't over acting. Honestly, as the series has progressed, I've gotten to like and understand her character more and more, enough so that when she does scream at random moments, I'm more than willing to overlook it.

I'm another stranded Healer fan, and this show has rescued me from Drama Withdrawal Blues, which threatened to be quite strong this go around.

:D

Yeah there are loads of funny moments between the leads as well as the twins and even at the office. I love this show next after Healer so its #2 slot for me.

Scary? Apart from CDH's horrible family, I don't find anything much scary .... Se-gi has cooled down a bit thanks to Ri-jin and in fact he helped loads last week. Perry and his bombs are scary though.

Well, there must have been a reason DH's dad turned out to be an abuser and it looks like she's the one who made him that way. Her total devotion to her son coupled with a complete lack of sympathy/feelings/any normal good emotion just feeds people like DH's dad.

I can't believe that two kids were abused in that large house populated with atleast three people (grandma, evil dad, grandpa, useless mom and maids and cooks and what not) and no one put a stop to it.

It's truly scary.

what I love about Ri Jin is that a typical drama heroine would do this or that, would say things you are used to hear, but she says what we would WANT her to say isntead. She is so untypical and turns around every cliche, does not fall for any cheesy melodrama, is very uncovered, she does not wear any masks in front of the guy, no scheming, no tricks, nor have any illusions about herself.

100 % who she is and not afraid to show it.

"...she says what we would WANT her to say isntead..."

Exactly!

Remember back in Episode 1 or 2 when Se Gi first meets her and says "10 pm: that's when I first fell for you"? And then she screeeeeeamlaughs in his face? I LOVED THAT. Because that's how a normal person would react to (what seems like) the cheesiest pick-up line on Earth.

She really has done all the things I've wanted her to do. I like my drama heroines capable and competent, and she has shown that in *spades* in this series. Sure, she's loud and over-the-top, but she's also incredibly quick on her feet (remember when Yo Seob was going to kill himself and she had one hour to find him?) and goes above and beyond for her patients. I *LOVE* how she has stayed competent and smart as the series goes on -- there hasn't been any of the typical dumbing-down of the heroine that happens in many drams.

Ji Sung is absolutely killing it in this drama; that is beyond debate. But we have to make sure we don't undersell Hwang Jung Eum: not only is her character really well-acted, bu she's also managed to create great chemistry (both romantic and otherwise) with Ji Sung. These two are so incredibly comfortable together, and I am certain that having her as his leading actress has propelled Ji Sung's performance to its current heights.

I love her since Secret.....and the chemistry and natural flow she has with Ji Sung is what makes this drama work. I saw their BTS, they don't just read scripts. They actively discuss among themselves and with the PD to work out the best way to bring each scene to life. And come on, during the kiss scene with Do-Hyun, her eyes were sparkling for real. How can I not like her, I can not imagine anyone else in her place doing this role.

Yeah, I was so disappointed when Dr Seok told Grandma. I mean, the obvious reason is patient confidentiality, but also just because it's a huge plot inconsistency to have Dr Seok refuse to tell Ki-joon a few episodes back and then so easily spill the beans to the grandma instead.

I really loved the moment when Ri-jin realised that Do-hyun came back. T___T Seriously, I live for these moments. <3 I kind of wish we got more sweet moments like that hehe.

And I LOVE that Ri-jin didn't get jealous of Chae-yeon!! For one horrible second I thought they were going to make it all cliched and angsty, but nope, thankfully she stays fabulous!! Can't wait for the new episodes this week~!! \o/

That love and war scene was so perfect for RiJin and so hilarious too. I love Chae Yeon's expression during the whole scene. She was like, what???

It basically shows how much confidence she has in her relationship with DoHyun and SeGi. Or maybe even that she's confident in herself, so even if she loses DH/SG, it wouldn't break her.

Dr. Seok telling everything to grandmother is not totally illegal. A patient with a serious condition like DID will always have someone, to be precise an adult who will be legally responsible on his behalf and that person will have certain rights to information regarding the patients current state of physical and mental health within certain limits. So, if we overlook the plot hole, lets assume grandmother is listed as a legal guardian and lets see, he told the doctor that Se-Gi almost tried killing his father, then I guess its not totally a violation of patient doctor confidentiality. But they should have explained it better, to me it felt a bit rushed. I didn't like that they just showed the doctor blurting out everything. Technically, what the doctor did can be explained as the right thing to do so why not add a few more lines to make it more clear.

hi all!

I just want to add that the Grandma already picked up that something is wrong with CDH anyway so she could have asked that to be investigated but what she did is go to Dr Seok. which she knows is CDH's doctor.

I guess it could have been done in a better way but I prefer that the Grandma got told instead of Ki Joon even if they are both evil!!!

@Lara4liwa
Yes, how about a flashback from Dr. Seok's point of view about his meeting with the awful Grandmother. A segment of five minutes of him thinking back to that meeting is enough to clear all the doubts about doctor patient confidentiality. While we are talking about doctor patient confidentiality, Ri Jin and Cha Do Hyun already have violated and pushed/tiptoed around the ethical limit quite a few times now. A fact that was acknowledged by Ri Jin herself so I guess we all have to agree to overlook certain plot holes to fully enjoy this drama.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree with Blue Winter Rose too.

Whether illegal or not I don't think that's where our focus is about. I was pretty surprised too (a little disappointed at the out of the blue confession as well) when the writer decided this path for Dr Seok.

Come to think of it Dr Seok has already guessed earlier that Ri Jin might be the trigger for the personalities, considering it took him such long time to meet all the personalities himself. Since Dr Seok believes that Ri Jin is the switch/tigger, and he already has an inkling of Ri Jin and Do Hyun/Segi having met before as well as the idea of abuse, I think Dr Seok's intention may be to go right to the root of it all i.e. abuse at the hands of the family. Do Hyun's Family=Grandma Seo

His motivations might be there, but the execution of it, as of now, could have been done better? With the current situation that we're in, I hope this scene would blend in well with the rest of the plot eventually.

Thanks for the recap Saya. Ive been constantly refreshing dramabeans for new updates till my fingers started to lose feeling. Lol.
I love Dohyun's realization and growth in this episode, the tiny beats of almost childlike wonder at being appreciated by others, as if being normal fr the very first time. I literally cheered out loud for Dohyun at his ending deceleration. <3
And Rijin is a joy. The way she lets out everything - after being seemingly perfectly efficient in handling all the crisis that comes her way - just makes her real. Its mesmerizing to watch them interact with each with with such candor. And Aw! RiOn wants to become DoHyun's friend! Yes, Please. :)

I can see a bromance between RiOn and DoHyun in the future. RiOn for all his silly behaviour, is actually very mature and he's also kind-hearted and over all a nice guy. I liked how he says "do you think I'm a person who'd made do business over another person's pain?" I like that he knows it's not right and it was never his intention.

When he realizes DoHyun has DID, his first reaction was pity, even before his concern for his sister.

SO I totally see RiOn hitting it off with all seven of DoHyun. especially YoNa.

Thank you for the recap. I just love your analysis of the show.

My favorite JiSung moment in this episode was when he mistook the driver for his father. Those few seconds really got to me, his terror and his reaction after that.

I really really like that the show gave the added dimension of the whipping boy-guilt to DoHyun. Just abuse, however horrifying it is in real life, has been done over and over again in literature and TV. It's like how we all asked, why didn't the doctor and RiJin suspect abuse if DoHyun has DID. It's like its almost a given. I'm so glad the show gave DoHyun's past trauma another level of guilt. And it's the guilt - because DoHyun is such a principled person - that caused the DID.

I love DoHyun's style of fighting back. It's so understated and gentlemanly. Even when he spoke to Chae Young in the cafe, telling her he was over her, I really liked how straight he was. He didn't mince his words, but they were delivered so calmly that it had an even bigger impact.

Even in this episode when he talks to grandma at the end, We can all tell that he's going through a really tough time, just realizing he meant nothing to her all along, that she knows about his illness and has not a shred of sympathy for him. And yet, his ending delivery is so calm and yet packed with emotion (because of JiSung, again) that I just loved it.

I am firmly in team DoHyun now.

By the way, I did a little PTSD/abuse victim research.
One very powerful word kept coming up: Shame

That somehow the person is so defective that he/she deserved the abusive treatment/trauma. Of course, those feelings exist AFTER the fact while he/she is trying to understand how they came to be in this situation. Problem is they are so broken they are not looking at themselves clearly. Everything is dark. They cannot remember a time when they were happy and whole. It is truly heartbreaking.

Isn't Ri Jin the child from an affair between Grandfather and the first wife of Do Hyun's father? Isn't that why Ri Jin was kept hidden in the basement out of shame? Then Ri Jin was secretly rescued during the fire and given to Ri On's parents to raise?
If true, then Ri Jin is the half-sister to Do Hyun's father and therefore is Do Hyun's aunt. Ri Jin would also be an heir to the family fortune at a higher level than Do Hyun and Ki Joon.
So hard to sort out these kdrama melo. Please correct. Thanks.

That is a a possibility, but as of now we haven't been been given any indication that that might be true or to the contrary. This family is very hard to sort out.
Right now, all we can be certain about is that it was Rijin was the child in the basement. Why she was there, how she survived the fire, how she ended up with the Oh family, just what exactly happened in the basement of gloom and whose child is she really? All of these are questions the show has yet to answer.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think all we know is that "that child" the one they are looking for is from Dohyun" father's wife. All we know is that the chairman favored her, and put her in charge, and went to find her in US and brought her back with her baby. They never say it's the chairman's baby. We know RJ is the child in the basement, but we don't know if she's the baby heir. I think she is though. I don't think she is blood related to DH though.

0

Required fields are marked *

If Ri Jin is the Chairman's baby, then she is blood related to Do Hyun because Do Hyun's father is the Chairman's son. That would mean RJ and DH should not have a relationship because that would be taboo incest. It would also set up an Autumn Tale type of faux-cest because Ri Jin and Ri On would not be related by blood and Ri On could pursue his unbrotherly interest in Ri Jin. What a melodrama!

That part where DH is talking into the mirror with SG, if I am not mistaken he is actually saying "your memories IS my memory; your pain IS my pain...I AM you and you ARE me." If this is true, then the scene is even more significant, cuz DH is now accepting that SG is a part of him - not a separate entity. Which, YAY!
I am trying to read SG expression when DH tells him he will handle of the the pain. I can see he is taken aback by DH's courage, but is there any relief? A lot of you are saying SG cares for DH, and so I expect a little tiny smile of relief for DH when he finally decides to face his past, but I didnt see that. Guess he is too afraid that he will disappear if DH really recall his past.

and I love Do Hyuns´ new determination! He really IS becoming much cooler! trust yourself! ( many people seem to be like that, they lack self confidence, so I think it is something that`s the most relatable about him). we all have fears, we are held bak by the past, and we hide things we thnk othes will condemn. but we can also turn the fear into a power to drive us towards change.

I've been checking every day just to see if there's a recap of this drama. And being a silent reader myself, it's a wonder that I just can't seem to resist to leave a comment here!

Anyway, I don't know if you guys notice, but Shin Segi is like a derivation name of a pun 'saekki' (derogatory term that means child animal).

I love how the name actually kinda correlates to Segi's characteristics. He's childish and impetuous. So you get what I mean.

I don't know if that's the writer's intention, but it's just a small detail from this show that makes me love it moreeeeee

Thanks for the recap, Saya. I agree that the writer took a lazy approach to getting Granny Dearest up to speed. I also had trouble believing that Ri-jin would be so afraid that Do-hyun couldn't handle finding out that he may have been abused. The guy was in therapy for years for D.I.D., and the main cause of D.I.D. is severe trauma resulting from childhood abuse. Surely he would've already known that the chances that he'd been abused were very high. (Of course, there's a big difference between knowing that you were abused, and remembering that abuse.)

All that aside, I loved this ep. It's really gratifying to see Do-hyun finding the courage to fight the good fight. I loved his phrasing to Se-gi, "Because you’ll soon be me. I’ll say it again: I will soon be you." And it was awesome that Do-hyun got to see how fiercely protective Ri-jin is of Do-hyun (when she was scolding who she thought was Se-gi).

I had to laugh at Ri-jin criticizing Do-hyun for his poor fashion sense, and then turning up at work with a barrette that looks like a giant caterpillar. Show has a great sense of humor.

I don't know. I think for most psych conditions, this is sort of not recommended. It's like shock therapy. I could be wrong but I think usually they're supposed to slowly work on their own memories instead of having it just thrown at them (especially since that's what created the memories in the first place).

Thank you for the as always awesome recap! Loved that last paragraph of your comment.
" ... it requires such a huge amount of trust for a person to be okay with putting down their innermost walls. Ri-jin is that person to Do-hyun, but he is also that person to her."
CDH's reason for loving Ri Jin after just spending a full day with her. He can let his guard down. And it's the most satisfying sense security one can have. You gotta believe in magic. Love it.

I love this show. It's not flawless but I truly enjoy every minute of watching. Yes, things are getting more melo but i'm glad that they're still making an effort to keep the light scenes and the rom com.

Some things that made me smile this episode:

- Ri Jin convincing DH to keep some of Se Gi's style. She pretty much flat out told him that he's sexy as hell and just needs to believe it for others to see it too.
- The foreshadowing for Ri On and Yo Na. I CANNOT wait. So excited!
-Brother/Sister interactions. I feel fairly certain that Ri On is just going to squash most of his unbrotherly feelings and that makes me feel relieved. I love them in their family moments. I also love that every time I think he's going to disappoint me, Ri On ends up being a pretty mature and thoughtful person who's morals prevail even with his unfortunate situation.
- DH starting to stand up to everyone. Although not necessarily all in a warring kind of way. I do actually think he likes his cousin (who I thought was going to be a needlessly bad guy in the beginning). I think their families have sort of set them against each other but they aren't those kinds of people. But some people do need to be taken down a peg, and DH is finally starting to walk down that path.

Yes! Me too!

- it is like imagine Do Hyun with sexiness all together. *swoons* I really like that scene so much because it clearly says that Rijin hold her promise to Segi that she would try to make Do Hyun to act like Segi and both will not disappear. She treated Segi like a person and does not dismiss his pleas. This is one great heroine in a drama and I couldn't imagine any other heroine could beat her.

- LOL!!! I knew this is coming when she mentioned about Yona to Rion. It's gonna be so exciting!

-exactly!!! Oh my god. I'm sort of waiting for Rion's confession to happen but I don't wish for it to happen. Could you even imagine my anxiety. He is a good guy, a great brother but I don't know when he would explode. This is going to making me crazy. (¬_¬)

- that is the best scene for the episode. It took so much courage for him to stand up against these people especially grandma. I felt so good for him and it's time to crush these people's illusion that Do Hyun is a weak man. Yeah I agree that I do feel that Do Hyun geinuine likes his cousin, especially in the first episode.

I hope there will be no melo, they will keep being honest and true to reality, because too much melodrama is way too big a shift from the wackiness to despair. it is ok to have moments of culnerability but Do Hyun should not go back to his self-sacrificing, always sorry self. He has to move forward. besides, wouldn´t learning that THAT child is still alive, be a happy moment? I hope it will be a moment of JOY instead. That they will both be happy about it and that through that joy, DH will really overcome the past. cause whatever evil may hit them, they can overcome

Now I can't wait to see how Ri Jin will cope with her own erased memories. She had done so well being the anchor and support Do Hyun needed, and even understand each of his personalities. But what will happens when she finally remembers that she's the one being abused and not really Do Hyun.

But i think she will handle it well, because she have very supportive and loving family. and she have do hyun (and se gi by her side). but still, i can't help but worry. if evil daddy use Ri Jin as the whipping-boy, and Do Hyun became like that after watching the horror of the abuse, what will happens to Ri Jin when she remembers that she's the one being abuse?

Oh gawd... i hope evil daddy won't wake up. i don't need any other villain other than grandma and ki joon.

as much as Ji Sung is so awesome in this drama, hwang jung eum is not an actress to be belittled with. Ji Sung played different personalities and it is so believable that i found myself easily differentiate between the personalities even when they're played by the same actor, and that just shows how good Ji Sung is as an actor. and as an actress, hwang jung eum actually able to matches up to each of the personality portrayed by Ji Sung and successfully provide the chemistry needed with each of the personality. heck, that scene with yo sub on the rooftop still lingers in my mind till today.

and yeah, this drama does have flaws here and there, but I'm willing to let it pass since it was so awesome.

but when Dr. Seok easily told grandma about Do Hyun's D.I.D, I was thinking the same, like WHATT??? Can a doctor gives out their patients' secrets like that? even to a family, it still needed to be authorized by Do Hyun himself. that was really kind of a big blow for me.

I also hope that Ri Jin will be the brave and honest woman we know, and just be open about how she feels, let it all out and then move on. and just find joy in the fact they are both there and life gave them a second chance for happiness. cause past is in the past, and time will heal, and there is no point letting what has passed rule over your life now.

I'm sorry but trauma doesnt work that way. You can't rationalize it with past is past and not let it affect your life now. It's not only a conscious thing, it affects you at a subconscious level and it is stored in your body as well. It changes your perception of yourself and life. It will take a lot of work and time to process through trauma and its many many debilitating effects on your life, especially if it's severe abuse or you've repressed your memories for so long. Just because you're strong doesnt mean you can "move on" easily.

when driving, I feel the speed is fast enough but my dad keep telling I am just better push the car to move it
and hardly learn it because I just keep getting nervous for no reason, but time eventually heal,
different people and different environment give diff result

and sorry to say this, but in life you have no choice. either lock yourself up in a room like Hong Do in Heart to Heart, or you just face it. nobody has that extra time to give it to you. Life doesnt wait until you´re ready, it throws stuff right at you. go ahead and stall it, then when you are finally "ready" you life is over.

everyone has traumas, even a lot more horrible ones, war traumas, I have read stories of Hiroshima victims whose outlook is just like that: gotta keep on moving as far as I can. I saw people jumping out of burning buildings and breaking all their bones when I was a child, several times. but I make fire sculptures. just a small example.

Life doesnt wait for you. and I was just expressing that Ri Jin is not the kind of person to let her past hold her back. I dont believe that. it is a matter of decision, not strength. and all her actions are not based on REACTIONS, but conscious decisions.

I agree with all the HJE love.

One of the reasons I admire her is her lack of fear. She attacks this and other roles with a gusto that dares folks to dislike her. Some do - there are those who cannot stand her, though, but I think they are missing out.

I cannot say enough about the HJE + JS working relationship.
I wonder about the time frame between JS being offered and HJE being offered and accepting the role. Did he call her up and say, "Let's do this thing! Together, we can crush this like nobody else!"
I cannot think of another actress who could have played RJ, opposite JS or not. She is perfect.

Me too. The role is not that easy to pull off as people think. She's being sidelined because of JiSungs amazing acting, but I cannot see anyone else playing that easy/fun loving part coupled with her strength of character and the depth required to pull of the memo parts. Its a comedy role that needs the depth of melo, and she transitions from scene to scene so perfectly. Like where she masked herself during the omega fan meeting, and then minutes later was a pillar of strength carting DH home and then next tearing his hair out. She's perfect for it.

Hello!! I'm back!

Yes!! I think this drama doesn't discount anyone's effort, even though I only seems to shout for Jisung amazing acting skill. I really appreciate HJE's acting. She is really a rare actress who can act both comedy and Melo. Without her, Jisung may not achieve such an award winning of acting in Kill Me Heal Me. Partner is so important in a drama to make it work and raved about. It is truly a great choice of cast that brings this drama in another level. I hope they can continue this momentum! I can't wait for the next ep recap to discuss more.

I freaking loved Do Hyun's smile when Ri Jin was scolding him. His sweet smile + Segi's sexy hair = irresistible combo. *___*
Their reunion was so nice to see.

A lot of people have commented about this already, but here goes my rant too:
It annoys me that Do Hyun's grandma was able to learn his private medical information so easily from his doctor! WTF.
Even though she was a relative, Do Hyun was an adult. He should have been informed about her visit and her demand to know his medical condition before anything else happened. Dr. Seok should have gotten a signed consent from Do Hyun allowing the Dr to release his medical information instead of just finally being glad a member of DH's family wants to know. It's not like I needed to see this actually play out in a scene, but I really wanted to see Do Hyun stop his grandma from learning the truth from Dr. Seok. Ugh. :|

It's a snow day today, but I wish I was watching a new episode of KMHM!! Totally counting down the hours/days til I can... Excited for Yona's appearance, haha. ;]

This was probably my favorite episode so far, it just keeps getting better and better! Every time Do hyun has a freak out about his dad it tears at my heart strings and it hurts so good! Plus, brotherly and weird oh ri on is definitely better than jealous and mad ri on.
And don't EVEN get me started on that declaration of war at the end. Considering how much we all hate crazy grandma- Se go's threats and Do hyun's new confidence tearing her apart are AWESOME
Btw, does anyone else think that dad's twitching fingers implies that the writer plans on waking him up? Cuz… please no

Required fields are marked *

I thought that the writer intended to wake him up (Do Hyun's father with the twitchy fingers), but I also thought that the finger moving he was doing was similar to Se Gi's own hand tic- where he drums his fingers?

Se Gi is definitely the more violent of the personalities, so I guess having that finger tic similar to his aggressive and violent father could make sense... but Se Gi is SO not his father- he's violent and aggressive, yes, but he does have a heart and a conscience, and while he may be pushy, he's also aware of other people's boundaries and he treats Ri Jin like she's the most precious thing on the planet. (I may or may not have the world's BIGGEST crush on Se Gi... lol).

I loved the "See what is the same" comparison they did with Se-gi getting ready for office vs Do-hyun getting ready for office. The reflection on their style/hairdo - a cute touch to showcase the similarities and the differences between the two guys.

Love love love that Ri-jin has so much agency! She goes to Do-hyun and deals with Chae-yeon - no one dragging her around or forcing her to do anything. Ri-on tried to, for a little bit, but Ri-jin ain't no paper Candy - she's someone with a brain and a will. Also the throw out to the 'scariest' persona for Ri-on - hehehe, that was a great foreshadwing to future comedy!

But as I was watching this episode...I was like thinking 'no Cha Do-hyun!! you're ruining all of Se-gi's awesome plan!!' - but saying apologetic stuff to grandma, and antsy when he met up with Chae-yeon, Ki-joon, even JI, because he was so soft spoken compared to how Se-gi dominating confidence.... sigh...when Se-gi is here, I miss Do-hyun, when Do-hyun is here, I wish Se-gi was there. so conflicting!

it bugged me how Do hyun was there not stopping his Grandma's slap but well, he was all over the place with his dad's memories and he did something even better than stopping her slaps by letting her look as the monster SHE is not offering a single word of comfort to her own grandson who has more than a decade suffering in silence... Do hyun taking back a bit of his confidence from SeGi who he still sees as an enemy but isnt his main concern anymore and channeling it to fight back his real enemies within his own family was amazing tho... He declared war to chairwoman just like SeGi did but in his own way with tears n his eyes and everything!

Im glad to see im not the only one furious as dr. Seok! at some point, I thought Do hyun told him to do so but his face when Chairwoman said she knew said otherwise... IDK whyyy they had to do it like this... They could make her find it with the infinite resources chaebol have or overhearing Chief Ahn or something but to have Dr. Seok say it with his own mouth, was sad to me!

***DISCLAIMER: I'm not Korean, don't speak Korean, and have never been to Korea! This reply just comes from having watched a lot of dramas ^_^.***

I have noticed that Koreans often(always?) pronounce the 'f' in English words with a 'p' sound. Listen when they talk about coffee: they call it "coppi". And when they say "wife", they say "wi-puh" (they're using the English term, but pronouncing the 'f' as a 'p').

Therefore, I think Perry's name, since it is obviously and English name and not a Korean one, might be receiving this same treatment. Do you remember when Yo Soeb left his graffiti death-message? Next to Perry's portrait was the name 'Ferry Park'; if you pronounce 'F's and 'P's the same, then you might very well spell Perry's first name 'Ferry'.

Again, this is just a guess! Someone who is/knows/speaks Korean chime in and let us know if I'm off-base here ^_^!

I *think* it's not 'Ferry Fark' because the last name 'Park' is a romanisation of an actual Korean word, whereas 'Perry' can be interchangeably spelled with a 'P' or an 'F' because it's not a word of Korean origin.

But as someone else was saying, perhaps the scriptwriters wanted his name to be 'Ferry', since he's super-obsessed with boats and a ferry is a type of boat. Still an English word, and if Koreans pronounced 'f's in English words so that they sound like a 'p', it would make sense that they CALL him 'Perry' but that the name is written with an 'F'.

0

well if they do NOT give Ferry a boat by the end they can all go to hell whatever else they do, because if you promise the guy a boat THE GUY SHOULD GET A BOAT, even if he sails to Aruba and marries a gypsy witch...well, maybe not that.

0

Hi, I tell you about error about 'Ferry Park'.

That explains it then! Of there was no "f" in Hangul then using f for p sound and vice versa is understandable. I'm Filipino and we didn't use to have an "f" in the Philippine alphabet until it was changed about a couple of decades ago....nonetheless I think many of Filipinos still interchange p and f up to now. We also didn't use to have "v" so many would still use the "b" sound for a "v" sound within a word. Other languages don't have "L" for example and will therefore use "r" to replace it. Or "v" for "w". And so on and so forth.
