Healer: Episode 18
by javabeans
Strap yourselves in, folks, it’s a roller coaster of an episode, running the entire emotional gamut—there’s plenty of cuteness and laughs, but with only one more week left, we can’t rest too assured in momentary comforts. We’re never far from the undercurrent of unease that runs throughout, reminding us that there’s just enough time for one more big fight. And that’s sure to be a doozy.

EPISODE 18 RECAP
Backing up a bit, we see how the tape made its way to Moon-ho’s broadcast, rather than into the Elder’s hand. Aha, so it was Dae-yong who got to the charnel vault first, and she finds a box tucked in the back containing the real tape. She swaps it for a decoy, then takes it to Moon-ho directly.
Moon-ho listens right away, then calls Jung-hoo to inform him of its contents. As they’d known, Seo Joon-seok wasn’t guilty, but moreover, he wasn’t even initially a suspect. He’d gone to the police to report Gil-han’s murder, with photos as proof. Thus the tape isn’t a suspect statement but a witness statement.
Jung-hoo has to pull over the car to process the good news, and he and Young-shin smile at each other.
Moon-ho thinks the tape is enough to take to broadcast, and tells Jung-hoo to come back. Jung-hoo asks Young-shin what she thinks, and she’s of the same mind as him: They’ll see through the original plan.
So now we resume with Jung-hoo capturing the Elder’s face on camera for all the nation to see. A bodyguard blocks the Elder from view, but Jung-hoo jumps into reporter mode (with some of Bong-soo’s demeanor) and starts asking a question. It goes ignored as the Elder leaves the room.
Jung-hoo has a few seconds of broadcast time before the guards close in on him, and calls out, “These people must work for the Elder! I’ll ask you a question! Surely you wouldn’t use violence and beat the reporter who came to interview the Elder during a live broadcast?”
His glasses and wallet are confiscated, and then the Elder returns to the room. Upon confirmation that this guy is a reporter named Park Bong-soo, he asks, “Didn’t you say you were the Healer?”
Jung-hoo laugh-stutters, “I-if I said that, ha ha, I was told you’d meet with me.” Gah, I am so glad Bong-soo is not real, because he would not be long for this world. The Elder says he’d talk if Bong-soo were the Healer, but if not… Jung-hoo guesses, “You’d k-kill me? But I don’t wanna die.”
He asks if “Grandpa” really is the Elder, and the Elder replies that he didn’t need to broadcast his face in order to ask that. But Jung-hoo counters that Gramps kills people who bother him, and he couldn’t have that—this is their way of posting a “Beware of dog” type warning sign.
The Elder crouches to meet Jung-hoo’s eye level and calls him child, asking who he is. Jung-hoo replies that there’s a man named Seo Joon-seok among the people Grandpa’s killed: “I am his son, Seo Jung-hoo. Grandpa, when you kill people in the future, you ought to think of their sons or daughters.”
Outside the house, Young-shin waits impatiently with a camera, trying to urge the police officers with her to intervene. But the police can’t do anything without proper authorization, so Young-shin just starts filming right there. There’s not much to see, but it’s enough to show police officers stationed outside the Elder’s house, and Moon-ho turns over the broadcast to show the scene. Within moments of it airing, the guards restraining Jung-hoo inside back off.
The Elder invites Jung-hoo to sit, offering Jung-hoo a drink that gets refused, and lighting an incense stick like this is some kind of polite visit. Jung-hoo has dropped the wimpy act and faces the old man defiantly, sneering at the Elder’s description of his side as “working to save people.”
The Elder explains that there’s the “us” who protect people, and the “them” who receive their protection: “Young man, which side do you want to be on?”
Jung-hoo is unimpressed with the Elder’s talk, but… wait, why are you fading and your senses dulling? Gah, it’s the incense, isn’t it? The Elder starts to blur in his eyes as the old man says he quite likes Jung-hoo but won’t wait long for his decision.
Jung-hoo tries to clear his head through the smoke, and then sees the stick and puts it out. Oh thank goodness. But the drugs have done their trick and he falls over, unconscious. The Elder leaves him in slumped in the room.
Back to Seo Joon-seok’s witness statement, which we see in flashback. Joon-seok sits dully in front of the detectives, emotionally traumatized from Gil-han’s death, and explains that “they” call themselves Farmers. As a trio, he and Gil-han and Moon-shik had been chasing the story for the past year when they received information about a planned truck shipment, which they took to mean slush fund movement.
Joon-seok describes the “farming” that this group does: They view the country as their field for the plowing, sowing money around to reap all sorts of benefits—political, legal, financial.
Young-shin finally gets tired of waiting and bursts onto the Elder’s property. She finds Jung-hoo starting to stir, trying to shake off his drug-induced stupor. She asks worriedly, “Why are you always sleeping when I see you?” He replies, “You always wake me.” Pause to aww.
She offers to take him to the hospital, but he asks to sleep a bit, resting against her shoulder and holding her arm. He asks, “Our fathers were very close, weren’t they?” Since he didn’t get to see the broadcast, Young-shin says that their fathers were loyal to the end, and recounts the events that we see in flashback.
1992. Moon-shik drives the car as the three friends follow the truck in question, and the mood is lighthearted with bickering and laughs. They think the task will be a simple matter of snapping a few photos showing the money handoff.
Upon arrival, it becomes evident that the situation is more serious than they’d anticipated. One truck contains large metal paint canisters, and another is filled with apple boxes containing massive sums of cash.
Gil-han wants to see inside the paint canisters, while Joon-seok holds him back. Gil-han just quips, “What are they going to do, kill me? A reporter?” But they accidentally knock over a bin that alerts the others to their presence, and Gil-han offers to divert them while Joon-seok gets to the paint cans. Before his friend can protest, he runs off and is quickly followed.
Joon-seok grabs a canister and runs back to the car, where he alerts Moon-shik to the danger. He tells Moon-shik to prepare for getaway, then heads back to get his friend.
When Joon-seok makes it back, Gil-han is already prone on the ground, his head bloody. Moon-shik arrives just in time to grab him back from going after the Farmer guys, but Joon-seok wells up in righteous fury. He starts snapping photos openly, and Moon-shik forcibly drags him back to the car.
The car escapes, and Joon-seok explains in his statement that he was on the run for days, and eventually found out what was in the paint cans. He explains that it was chemicals used in construction projects to weaken steel, and as soon as he reveals this, men in suits burst in to stop the proceedings.
Young-shin wraps up the story, and Jung-hoo sighs, “It’s over. The homework. For Teacher, Father, and you.” He’s free to leave the Healer behind, and Young-shin praises him for a job well done, Jung-hoo rests his head in her lap (…but… the Elder’s house…) and asks, “Living like other people—is it hard?”
“Let’s try it, living like other people,” she says. He asks, “You’ll be with me, right?” And she replies, “Of course.” He sighs that that’s enough, and closes his eyes to sleep some more, taking her hand in his.
Myung-hee prepares a nice dinner for her and Moon-shik, and her outwardly pleasant attitude puts him in a good mood. It seems she’s watching for his reaction as she tells him of watching Moon-ho’s broadcast and asks about what he didn’t tell her. He answers that he hadn’t been holding back from her, admitting that he’d suspected Joon-seok all these years, and the broadcast has allowed him peace of mind knowing that wasn’t true.
Myung-hee doesn’t like that answer (well, it is a blatant lie), and I wonder if she’d been hoping he’d respond differently. She keeps her pleasant face on, but looks meaningfully over at Ji-an’s birthday spread nearby. I do hope her suspicion extends to that story too.
Moon-shik retires to his study after dinner, and his mind flashes back to his first encounter with the Elder. And now we see what happens next: Moon-shik accepts that deal, and gives a witness statement to the police that he saw Joon-seok killing Gil-han. Interestingly, the first statement is given while he’s bloody, terrified, and shaking. The second time, Moon-shik is resigned and dead-eyed.
But by the third time, he’s crisp and alert, confident in his lies as he says that the money triggered Joon-seok’s greed. When Gil-han refused to keep it, Joon-seok killed him.
In the present day, the memory doesn’t even stir a pang of regret as he sits there, idly eating Ji-an’s birthday cookies, soul unruffled. Or maybe absent.
In contrast, over at the cafe, Young-shin and her father eye that cookie with reverent anticipation, both bummed to see that it broke in transit. Young-shin feeds Dad the first bite, and they marvel at the taste. Then Dad asks when she’s bringing “that guy” over, and she initially feigns ignorance (“Which guy? I kinda have a lot of guys”).
Dad tells her to drag him over, then sighs that of all the men, she had to pick one so weak and frail, always ready to cry at the drop of a hat. She dies laughing.
When she gets to her room, she’s startled to find Jung-hoo already here, having climbed in through the window and all ready for his hugs. She pushes him back to arm’s length and lays down a few ground rules about how to live like other people, which includes using front doors. And meeting her father to get his permission to date, which makes him grimace. Also, on his girlfriend’s birthday, he should give her a gift.
She holds out her hands expectantly, and Jung-hoo fumbles to come up with something. He gives her the necklace from around his neck, and she points out that it would be nice to get gifts that are new and wrapped. He tries to make it better by pointing out that his necklace has a tracker in it, but that just sounds worse, lol.
Young-shin lets him fasten it around her neck, and he asks, “Can I hug you now?” He grabs her in a hug without waiting, and she kicks him. HA.
He looks hurt as he asks why she keeps pushing him away, and she reminds him that he wanted to live, and love, like other people. He asks what this is, and she says, “This is… a little different from other people.”
Jung-hoo decides he can do things in the proper order, and tells her to wait. She agrees, telling him not to take too long. He notes the key points—father, salary—and she heads to the door to show him how to use it properly, only to turn around to see that he’s already left via window. Siiiigh.
Adorably, Jung-hoo then barrels in through the cafe doors, psyching himself up to get this over with. But the longer Dad stares at him blankly, the more his nerves falter and Jung-hoo mutters to himself that he can’t do it. He stammers to Dad that he’ll come back next time, and I love that he’s really not too far off from wimpy Bong-sookie after all.
Pickpocket Ajusshi enters just then, blocking Jung-hoo’s exit, and Dad slowly wraps his hand in an apron like he’s getting ready to inflict some pain. Jung-hoo says nervously that he’s here to give his proper greeting and get permission.
Young-shin hears noise and hurries downstairs, where she finds Jung-hoo in the study with Dad and ajusshi. Jung-hoo sends her pathetic pleading looks while Dad warns her to stay out of this.
Dad starts with the cafe kiss a few days ago, and just thinking of it spurs violent impulses. Ajusshi intervenes: information first, then kill. Ajusshi takes over the interrogation and asks how far they’ve gone, and thankfully Dad shoves him aside because I’m not sure that’s an answer they want to hear.
Dad asks if that soup was any good, and Jung-hoo answers that it was delicious. You’ll recall that Young-shin had called Dad for recipe instructions from Jung-hoo’s pad, and now Dad knows that Jung-hoo was the friend needing nursing all night long. Ajusshi has to hold him back while Jung-hoo darts around the room trying to avoid a beating while blurting, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”
Making this even better is the fact that while sounds of destruction come from the office, Young-shin listens from outside eating ice cream. As you do.
The mood takes a darker turn, however, when later that night Secretary Oh makes his way inside Moon-ho’s apartment. This can’t be good.
At the paper, Editor Jang alerts Moon-ho to postings on the Someday message board that offer information from witnesses who’ve met the Elder. It’s unclear whether these tips are legit, but Moon-ho instructs his staff to look into them, and they’ll follow up on anything that sounds promising. Editor Jang points out that they’ll be understaffed, which is Moon-ho’s cue to introduce their new employee: Jung-hoo, or rather, Bong-soo, who is heartily welcomed.
While the team congratulates him for his intrepid undercover work, Young-shin tells Moon-ho about Jung-hoo wanting to live like a regular person, which Moon-ho notes isn’t the easiest thing. Young-shin quips, “I think living like other people means not knowing what you’re doing. What’s so great about that?” She adds that Jung-hoo’s done being the Healer, laughing that she thinks he got fired. Yay for ajumma.
Moon-ho informs her that Myung-hee asked for an excuse to meet Young-shin again. As they talk cozily, Jung-hoo shoots Moon-ho the side-eye and steps right between them, just like old times. Aw, jealous Bong-sookie.
Young-shin starts to narrate an explanation about a friend reentering mainstream society, and we see Jung-hoo adapting to civilian life. He struggles to remain awake all day at work, which she compares to being a wildcat—awake for the hunt, sleeping otherwise.
When his first paycheck comes in, Jung-hoo calls in to ajumma to ask how much it was, shocked at the paltry sum (“But… I worked a whole month!”). He even wonders if he should pick up some side jobs, but ajumma reminds him that he quit being the Healer and wants her earset back. Then she screams at her screen—not at Jung-hoo, but at the hapless newbie who can’t do a simple task right. Ha, is she training the new Healer?
It’s Dae-yong, who’s in plain view of all the car black boxes around her. Dae-yong complains that there’s no street in Seoul without parked cars, and ajumma barks, “That’s why your hyungnim flew around on rooftops!”
Young-shin’s voiceover comes from her conversation with Myung-hee, and she laughingly describes how this guy is a teeny bit older but acts thirteen, which is why she has to look after him. Myung-hee guesses that she likes him, then leans right in to brush a crumb from Young-shin’s face and touch up her makeup, their rapport already comfortable.
The day arrives for Moon-shik’s live broadcast interview, and at the last minute, Moon-ho receives the alarming news that Moon-shik arrived at the station and announced that he’d be deviating from the script. This is equally disruptive to both the broadcaster and Someday, but it’s worse for Someday, who’ve lost their opportunity to counter Moon-shik’s interview replies in real time.
At the station, Moon-shik just tells Min-jae, who’s interviewing him, to ask whatever she wants. The Someday team gathers to watch, and Moon-shik starts by deftly fielding questions about whether he’s able to manage Seoul when he can’t even manage his brotherly relationship.
Moon-shik speaks openly of Moon-ho’s current activities opposing him, but invokes his own reporter past. He identifies himself as a member of the pirate broadcasts that have garnered Moon-ho so much popularity these days and even pulls out that photo to show on air.
Calling himself a journalist who once fought for the freedom of media, he says that he has to take his brother’s activities in stride—because that’s what he fought for. God, that’s infuriating. Moon-ho watches with a sour expression, and is forced to cancel their planned broadcast, given the direction of Moon-shik’s interview.
Myung-hee’s reaction is similar, full of impotent anger, and Young-shin takes her hand as they listen to Moon-shik talking about how the press frankly has too much freedom these days, and in order for that to happen, those in power have had to sacrifice a lot. Oh, boo-hoo for the rich and powerful.
Then he takes out the old suitcase full of cassette tapes belonging to Moon-ho—so that’s what Secretary Oh was doing lurking in his apartment. Jung-hoo has to jump in to keep Moon-ho from physically assaulting his television as Moon-shik proudly shows off the tapes and the old Healer zine as treasured memories. His smugness is maddening.
Myung-hee watches bitterly as Moon-shik explains the meaning behind Healer, proclaiming the press as a force that identifies and treats society’s pains, and he just takes credit for everything like a goddamned hero. Moon-shik turns to address the camera/the public, saying that he worked to protect the media, and will now turn those efforts to protecting the city of Seoul, “as well as this country’s freedom, democracy, and order.”
Myung-hee cries to Young-shin, “I’m sorry.” Young-shin doesn’t understand why, but holds her mother in her arms as she cries.
Sitting grimly after the broadcast, Jung-hoo offers to steal back the tapes, which shouldn’t be too difficult. Moon-ho points out that he’s given up his clandestine errand-running job, saying that he’d like for Jung-hoo to live normally. “But… are you okay?” Jung-hoo asks. He looks over at Moon-ho and says in joke-relief, “I was really scared you were crying.”
Moon-ho returns, “I almost cried.” Jung-hoo asks if that’s because of the stolen tapes, and Moon-ho just tells him to buy some more beer and come over, because he’s got a lot of things he wants to tell him and Young-shin.
Our Double S Guards make a reappearance, although it’s to get shoved to the side as the operation gets taken over by Jeil Newspaper’s Manager Ahn. I suppose he IS more effective than Sang-soo, who finds his office taken over by the brusque newcomer.
Min-ja has her eye on Double S and notices the movement, as does Dae-yong, who’s staking out the building. They watch the Jeil team leaving the office, and Dae-yong wonders why they’re here. Ajumma merely replies that she’s making the Healer a retirement fund, and it involves the thugs who followed him after the ex-cop died. It’s likely that one of them was the killer—but why would they be affiliated with Double S?
Dae-yong photographs the Jeil team, and the closeup of Manager Ahn’s face niggles at ajumma’s memory. Where has she seen him before?
The Someday staff stays late working their way through the Elder tips, which are mostly duds. Moon-ho looks exhausted, but rather than take a break he’s preparing for things to start soon (…more things?). He’s not sure when or how they’ll come at them, but he knows to expect something.
While the staffers doze, Moon-ho finds Young-shin sleeping in Jung-hoo’s lap, clutching his arm. He notes that the couple is being pretty blatant, and Jung-hoo informs Moon-ho that she can’t sleep around just anyone. “What about you?” Moon-ho asks. “I’m not just anyone,” Jung-hoo replies.
Jung-hoo asks about Moon-ho fighting the Elder now, and wonders if that puts Young-shin in danger. Moon-ho doesn’t know, and asks if Jung-hoo would like to take her away someplace far, where it’ll be easier to live as a normal person. Jung-hoo admits that he’s hesitating over the idea: “I think it’s because of you. Leaving you on your own and going away just the two of us doesn’t feel right.”
Moon-ho touches hand to heart and half-teases that he’s touched. But Jung-hoo says seriously, “I can’t be without her now. So if it’s for her, I could throw you away.”
“That’s okay,” Moon-ho says readily, smiling. Ack! Stop doing things that make me scared for you!
In the morning, the attack begins. In a flurry of activity, Moon-ho is hit with legal documents, including a summons by the prosecutors’ office. Then a team is sent from the National Tax Service, acting on the report that misuse of funds were used to buy out Someday. Fuming, Moon-ho can do nothing while they confiscate everything.
It looks like they’re going after Someday big-time, and Editor Jang wonders to Jung-hoo whether his wife’s current business troubles could be related. Her restaurant was hit with a health inspection and enormous fine, and the timing makes him wonder if there’s any connection. But he shakes his head, telling himself there isn’t.
Later that evening, Moon-ho pulls into his parking garage, with Jung-hoo and Young-shin not far behind, armed with beer for a friendly visit. The second Moon-ho opens his car door, he’s ambushed—gack! Noooo, not Moon-ho!
His attackers drug him with chloroform. Their cars peel out moments later, just as Jung-hoo’s car drives in. That strikes Jung-hoo as odd, and the moment he sees the dropped camera in Moon-ho’s parking spot, his sense of alarm spikes.
Jung-hoo connects to ajumma right away, asking her to track Moon-ho, and gives Young-shin the choice: come with him or wait in Moon-ho’s apartment. She guesses that fighting is likely and quickly gets out of the car—better not hold him back. When he tries to escort her upstairs, she waves him off, and he’s pressed enough to hurry out after Moon-ho. Uh-oh. I have very bad feelings about all of this.
In the getaway car with an unconscious Moon-ho, the Elder’s minions find his cell phone and hand it off to a motorcyclist, who drives off in other direction. Crap crap crap.
Jung-hoo therefore follows ajumma’s instructions following the wrong vehicle, while Young-shin waits for the elevator to Moon-ho’s apartment. Someone joins her, and she nervously looks up… at a smiling, smarmy-faced Secretary Oh.
COMMENTS
Well that’s certainly not a face you ever want to see, especially when it’s looking so gleeful. Secretary Oh should never be happy, because only bad things happen when he’s happy.
What a great (and terrible!) episode of turnarounds, coming off last episode’s euphoria of Team Healer pulling a fast one on the bad guys with such aplomb. Then there was all that relationship cuteness, and moments of warm humor, and promises of the future… and bam! We slam into a wall of darkness and unease. Dramatically, it’s fantastic. It’s just, as a viewer, I don’t know how much my nerves can take. I just care too much about these people, so sue me. *cries into cornflakes*
I was a little surprised to see the Elder storyline settle down so quickly after the live broadcast ambush, because while I knew that he would regroup later, I didn’t expect him to just… vanish and let the characters be happy and safe. I suppose that lull just makes the attack more painful when it comes, but it also serves the purpose in giving us a glimpse of life after Healer-dom, which I didn’t realize I wanted to see so badly until we saw it.
That’s not just because I want to see Jung-hoo normal and happy, but because there’s a thread of sadness woven into this concept of being reintroduced to society that I really appreciate. It’s amusing in the moment to see Jung-hoo’s reintegration foibles in a comedic light, but it also hurts the heart a little when you consider just how much of an impact his isolated life has had on who he is as a person, and how he reacts to the most ordinary of circumstances. It’s funny to call him thirteen and laugh at how he goes through windows, but then he asks in a plaintive voice why Young-shin is keeping him away from herself, and the reality comes crashing in: He doesn’t actually know how to react. He doesn’t have social graces. He’s always tired because he’s never had to be a functional adult.
It’s therefore just as saddening as it is amusing to see Jung-hoo struggling to adjust to mundane life, especially since this current life isn’t too different from what he did the first time as Park Bong-soo… it’s just that the first time, the job was the afterthought, the B-sides to Healer’s super-fly action movie A-story. This time, he has to live the B-sides as his main life, and the beauty of that is that this humdrum ordinariness is actually the goal he wants. Once he gets used to staying awake for a full workday and answering phone calls he doesn’t want to, that is. It might take a while, but thankfully, he’s got the rest of his life to figure it out.
I find myself flip-flopping on Moon-shik with every twist, and I suppose that indicates that he’s been very well-drawn on both sides of his character, because both of his extremes feel credible. Yesterday I saw him in a more sympathetic light, but today he went back to pissing me off, albeit in a good way because he’s showing more complexity and shades of his darkness, not just going back and forth between stark white and black. His interview was brilliant and infuriating in equal measure, and showed once more his gift in taking the truth and using it to shape the narrative he wants to present.
Nothing he said in the broadcast was false, and furthermore, you get the sense that Moon-shik truly believes his explanations of why he was acting for a good cause. He’s not just a good liar; he may be self-delusional about his motives, and that makes him a very dangerous character. It’s almost sociopathic, his ability to convey earnestness and truth in a way that’s just wrong. The Moon-shik of 1980 didn’t seem so bad, and the Moon-shik of 1992 (even after the accident) also appears well-intentioned and loyal. But there’s no getting around the fact that since then, he has made choices with his eyes wide open and is warping the past to bolster his actions in the present. That explains why Moon-ho and Myung-hee reacted with such frustrated rage, because he’s just too good at twisting facts into his version of the truth.
The explanation of the Farmers takes us in an interesting direction, shifting the story away from the personal injustices and into a darker well of institutionalized corruption. This is something Writer Song does particularly well (and reminds me of Story of a Man, in fact), and by the time we get to this part of the story we’re deeply invested because of the connection to our main characters. (As to the particulars of the case: I’m not 100 percent sure I’m understanding correctly, so correct me if I’m wrong, but the scene witnessed by Gil-han and Joon-seok showed the Farmers involved in a massive payoff that involved the willful use of bad construction materials. It turns this into a more dangerous issue than politicians merely stashing away illegal funds—that’s a bad enough thing, but at least not a direct threat to public safety.)
But on to Moon-ho, whose fate isn’t looking so good right about now. To be honest, I was never convinced he’d make it out of the drama alive, but the more he integrated with Team Healer, the more positive I thought his chances were for survival. On a symbolic level I argue with myself that it works better to keep him alive, as a survivor of this cyclical series of events that began in 1980; his internet broadcasts carry echoes of the old rebellious spirit, and because of his age he has always been smack-dab in the middle of the two generations, acting as a link but never quite belonging to either group. So he isn’t necessarily bound to the old tragedy, and I feel like an argument could be made for him being the way to break the cycle in the new generation.
On the other hand, recent episodes hint at his willingness to hurtle headlong into the fight without concern for coming out of it alive, and he might just go down fighting. It’s a lovely contrast to his earlier apathy, where he lived because he wasn’t dead, not because he had any great motivation to stay alive. Now that he’s discovered a passion to keep him going, surely the writer wouldn’t be so cruel as to snatch that away from us/him, would she? (Worried side note: She totally would be that cruel. It’s kind of why I love her writing, and also feel pain because of it.)
And perhaps viewed symbolically from the other side, it’s possible that the message for Moon-ho is that it’s more meaningful to live with purpose for a short time than to exist indefinitely without purpose. That links him closer to the older generation, most of whom met premature ends but whose lives were, as far as we can judge, well-lived and well-loved.
Aghhhh, basically I think this means that Moon-ho could live or die and either case is supported thematically and symbolically, and now I’m just scared. Don’t die, Moon-ho! Please?

@ottoke the most rewatched show for me was The Master's Sun, also rewatched secret garden only otp moments though. Secret garden was so strange for me, because the first time I watched it, I didn't like it at all. Second time, I started to feel the fluttering of the heart from hyun bin lol.
I also watched secret (yes I know it's dramatic, but loved it)
Healer I've been rewatching so much just waiting for new episodes lol

@TurkishRose, I'm kind of squeamish when it comes to ghosts and supernatural things like that, but Master's Sun has been recommended by several friends so I might give it a try one day...
I liked Secret Garden and Secret (so makjang but I marathoned that show! I can see why they teamed up again in KMHM). Thanks for sharing!

OMG @TurkishRose, those are exactly the same dramas I've rewatched several times, maybe not in full, but favourite episodes.
While waiting for Healer finale episodes (yay, epi19 a few hours from now!) I rewatched the two final episodes of SG and the second half of Master's Sun. Also rewatching Hana Yori Dango, after reading about news that Inoue Mao and MatsuJun might be announcing marriage plans soon. Don't know, though if that would prove to be a rumour again.

I watched the first few episodes of Master's Sun, around 7 or 8 ? Certainly no more than that. Gave it up because of Gong Hyo Jin - I thought her eyes were dead and I just couldn't stand it any more. Then IOIL came along and I love her here, as I did Jo In Sung.
I've since heard praises for Master's Sun, but I'm still ambivalent about watching it though.
Sawrry, don't hate me. :-(
And oh! Secret - I quiet liked it. Not too happy about the lawyer ex-boyfriend though. I thought he got off too lightly for his nasty deeds. :-)

City Hunter
SKKS
Answer Me 1997 & 1994

Monstar (its not the best but I love the music and Kang Ha nuel!)

To marry a millionaire (Go Soo is so handsome!)
I Hear Your Voice (I love this OTP. Lee Jong Seok was impressive as child-boy-man)
All About My Romance (Loved Shin Ha Kyun)
Liar Game (for the deliciously dimpled Lee Sang Yoon and the machinations of the game)
Misaeng (the happy moments only... the sad ones break my heart too much)
Angel Eyes (again Lee Sang Yoon and the sweet romance, but not the noble idiocy part)
Trot Lovers (same as Angel Eyes... for the OTP and not the noble idiocy)
FTLY (same as Trot Lovers LOL!)
My Spring Days (Kam Woo Sung and Choi Soo Young's romance blew me away. Bit sad but again very sweet)
My Secret Hotel (Hated the execution of the show and poor storytelling, but loved the OTP for the few times they actually were together properly. Jin Yi Han was delectable and Yoo In Na cute. Oh yes, I mentioned before, I like her clothes and accessories LOL!)

Sub-thread: Dreamingsnowflake2013's EPISODE 17 ANALYSIS - Part 1
~That Person~
"Chae Young Shin, ask what happened. I’ll answer everything. I can’t answer if you don’t ask." - JH
One of the many things I love about Healer is that angst never lasts long in the show, yet it doesn’t make it any less heart-wrenching or intense. Yes, there are misunderstandings, heartbreaks, doubts and insecurities that the characters go through, but YS and JH continue to love and trust each other despite them all. If they continue to be true to each other like this there will be no hurdle or obstacle too high for them to overcome. It’s such a great moment for the OTP because despite their fears they both want to talk about what happened. JH is almost desperate to explain himself and clear any misunderstanding YS could have about him; it’s as if he couldn’t bear the thought she would think of him badly. I think he could deal with the whole world blaming him except for her. For him, she has already become his confidant from the moment he decided to tell her the worst and darkest secrets - he trusts her with everything and despite his fears he viscerally knows she will believe him no matter what. On the other side, there is YS who is prepared to hear his side of the story without any bias or prejudice. Their willingness to communicate about even the most difficult, traumatic or uncomfortable matters is one of the zillions reasons which makes them so functional. It’s a nice touch that she is feeling nervous and needs to mentally prepare and brace yourself before answering JH’s call, and that she uses for it Bong Sook’s name as something that gives her strength and brings fond memories. I think that YS already knows JH so well that she has realised that a small part of BS’s persona is the manifestation of JH’s own awkwardness and social ineptness. And a man with such an adorkable side wouldn’t be able to commit something so violent as a murder. The thought of that endearing man brings that soul-stirring gentleness to her voice when she calls out his real name and I only wish JH would have been able to hear it, because if he did, if he heard that love and acceptance in it, all his fears would have vanished in thin air.
It’s a great credit to SJN and the PD that they spend time on those little details that don’t play any part in the dialogue, but they give the scenes an added value and nuances. At first glance they serve only as transitions or a set-up, however, they reveal a lot about the characters or their relationship without the need for a dialogue. For instance, the ever messy JH cleaning the beer stains in case YS would barge though the doors and demand answers, or the fact that he’s kept the heater in the same place she left it as if he wanted to conserve her presence and seek comfort in it. (I’m used to kdrama male leads being sad over food but heater that’s new a novelty.) Their subsequent, almost...

....telepathic, conversation proves how much they wish to clear the misunderstanding. I love that YS’s first concern is whether JH is OK, showing us that even despite it all, she worries about his well-being first and that her first thought is to protect him (changing the name in her phone contacts to “that person”) even without hearing his explanation.
One of the scenes which made a huge impact on me in episode 17 was when JH came to PDC’s home. The first thing that came to mind was that he came there looking for some clues but then the real reason behind his visit hit me. Despite all his troubles and problems, despite all the misery this man brought upon him, he still finds the time to pay his last respect to him. It’s such a strong moment - JH taking off his hat in respect and standing in that little, cheap room which is all that has left of PDC who was punished for trying to do the right thing by losing everything while his life was reduced to a bleak, semi-transient existence. He died but there is no one in the whole world who would remember him, to pay him last respect or give him the justice he deserves… except the one man who’s supposed to hate him the most. It shows shows us what a great person JH is - he is able to rise above the old grievances and instead of blaming the man or feeling hatred towards him, he shows compassion and sympathy while directing all the guilt towards himself.

Sub-thread: Dreamingsnowflake2013's EPISODE 17 ANALYSIS - Part 2
~The most powerful of them all~
"Hello… Elder." - JH
EPIC! Goosebumps inducing! There are no other words to describe this scene. It gave me such a thrill to watch JH appear out of nowhere and directly confront his ultimate enemy for the first time, because as dangerous as MS and Secretary might be, in the end they are both just pawns in this great, intricate chess game. To continue with the chess comparison, The Elder might be the King, but the moment you fail to protect him and he falls, the game’s over, regardless how many handy pawns you have, that’s why he’s been targeted by MH from the very beginning. On the other hand, JH reminds me of the Queen - powerful, unpredictable, offensive, tends to be used as the ultimate bait to lure the opponent in, almost limitlessly mobile and able to strike in one swift move - the most valuable chess piece that often decides the outcome of the game.
JCW’s performance is truly remarkable here - in each speech sound you can hear the mix of sheer contempt and mockery as JH sneers the man’s name, and for the first time there is a chink in Elder’s blasé armour. He is deeply unsettled and you can spot the fleeting glimpse of fear in his countenance. It’s as if the predator in him could sense the formidable presence of his opponent who is currently challenging him so boldly and with such audacity; as if he could sense the danger JH poses to him and his empire. JH is the new huge unknown in Elder’s intricate equation and also his worst nightmare. Wouldn’t it be ironic if his own downfall was of his own making - one of his past victims coming to mete out revenge on him?
The clash with the Secretary is awesome, as well. JH in rage is far more threatening and fear inducing that the Elder has ever been; the wrath and disdain is literally emitting from him. When he’s enumerating OTW’s crimes in that chilling voice, each more damning that the last, it’s as if he’s passing a sentence. (To hear it all at once make them sound even more horrible.) Will he be also the one who will deliver him to justice in the end?

"You kill people, hurt people, scare people and if you get arrested, you’ll just come get out again. Then if I just kill you right here? I’d be doing everyone a favour, right?" - JH
You can sense JH’s hatred, you can spot the intense, almost fanatical gleam in his eyes, yet you always feel that he is in complete command of himself. Still hearing him being so calculating, coldblooded and matter-of-fact about it makes him seem even more menacing and dangerous.
I simply continue to be in awe of all the details SJN gives to her characters, no matter how minor they might be. OTW being a complete control/cleanliness freak makes a total sense - a lifetime of cleaning Elder’s dirty laudry, sweeping under the carpet and getting rid of the burdensome and obstacles must have left its marks. It makes JH a great justice that in the end he feels pity for this poor excuse of a human being, nothing but a puppet on strings moving to the will of his master puppeteer. Neither such pathetic psycho nor the Elder are worth the loss of his soul.

Ooh. I don't think it's chess at all. The Elder is one of many Farmers. And the 'game' they play is more like a hybrid of Go and Chess. Chess is about capturing a king. Go is about amassing territory. The Farmers make kings in order to amass territory. And taking out one Farmer, only means the others will take over the territory he amassed.

~Walking the same path~
"If I didn’t give a pretty smile or if I asked a question you didn’t want to hear you’d get tired of me. That you’d want to throw me away." - YS
"I wouldn’t do that." - JH
You know those moments when you are expecting something great but the reality over exceeds every single of your already high expectations? Well, that’s basically the characterisation of Healer summed up in one sentence. Just like here, I was expecting a great scene which would clear the misunderstanding between the OTP, but what I got in the end was far more than I bargained for. I love that the story is not only about dealing with JH’s demons but with YS’s insecurities and fears, as well. Just like YS is there for him when he is at his lowest, so is JH when it’s her who needs him; both standing by the side of the other for better and for worse. In many regards their relationship is almost symbiotic and they complement each other perfectly.
It’s so heart-wrenching to watch YS as she admitted to JH her greatest fear and insecurity, something which has been weighing on her the whole time she’s been with him - that he would one day abandon her. This really does explain all - why YS kept always asking JH whether he was coming back whenever there was a misunderstanding between them, why she never asked about his past, even though he was actually waiting for her to do so… They really are two peas in a pod, aren’t they? Both deeply affected and damaged by their childhood trauma and suffering from abandonment issues. It has had a huge impact on their lives as they both never found close friends, as if they thought what was the point if everyone would eventually leave them, only for them to become each other’s cure in the end. It seems almost predestined then that YS managed to find the very man who has never abandoned anyone in his whole life. I would go even that far and say JH is impervious to that dangerous, contagious disease called noble idiocy and dubbed as the bain of all OTPs. To leave someone he cares about behind is not JH’s style and now when he finally has her and she is his - his to protect - and he is NEVER LETTING HER GO.
It’s so typical of JH to silently watch over her the whole time without her knowing as if he was her guardian angel and when she begins to speak, pouring her heart out to him, he simply listens and let’s her talk about her pain, while he keeps watching her with that soul-stirring look full of tenderness, acceptance and love he can’t fully voice just yet.

"Jung Hoo. Have you ever killed a person?" - YS
"No." - JH
"I thought so." - YS
ONE WORD! One word from JH is all it takes to clear all her doubts! And the best thing about it is that he realises that she believed him the whole time and that “no” from him was only an assurance and confirmation she needed to hear from him. After they are back to their comfortable rapport JH’s first impulse is to confide in YS, as if he’s been waiting the whole time to tell her everything that troubled him, but also because she should know what she would be getting herself into if she decided to stay with him.
When JH mentions meeting her father to ask for his permission, it’s a clear hint he’s been planning to build a future with her. I think it was not difficult for JH to give up his semi-utopian dream of living on a deserted island - he doesn’t need it anymore because his new dream is to stay by YS’s side for A VERY LONG TIME.
I adore the last screencap so freaking much because there is something deeply symbolic about the sight of the two lovers walking hand-in-hand on the same path together wherever it may lead them.

Sub-thread: Dreamingsnowflake2013's EPISODE 17 ANALYSIS - Part 4
~Team HEALER 2.0~
This scene is such a joy to watch with the Team HEALER finally complete as the two lovebirds are joined by the duo of trusty shippers Ahjumma and MH. I love the dynamics between this group of oddballs. YS has back her custom-made spy hairpin and she is in her full Healer’s girlfriday mode, endearing in her eagerness to be part of the team and help her man to fight the big bad. Her pout when MH tries to curb her excitement and send her home is so adorable. By the way, Moon Ho-ya, your over-protectiveness has cockblocking effects! Fortunately, we have Ahjumma who comes to the rescue and brings the order back to universe!
“If a fight breaks out, then what do you have to do?” - JH
“Just close my eyes and wait, then Jung Hoo will take care of everything.” - YS
“That’s right… that’s right!” - JH
Awwwwwww! Why so perfect, you two! There is only so much shippy awesomeness my heart can take! How great is it that JH doesn’t see YS as some delicate flower nor does he treat her as such?! He involves her in his plan, despite knowing about her psychological block. But he also knows that she is strong and brave and that she has the same right to know the truth about what happened and to fight this battle for justice for her father and family, as he does. He doesn’t want to deny her that. So instead of discouraging her he gives her pointers how to protect herself on her own, and instead of seeing her handicap as an obstacle or weakness, JH simply deals with it and adjusts to it, because for him it’s as an integral part of her as her quirky personality or silky hair and he loves everything about her. Each of his actions shows the depths of his love for YS - he considers her as his equal, his partner and he treats her like one, too, with the utmost respect.

After reading @Rigby's post on comparing the amount of comments between Healer vs K2H, I can't sit by and see that K2H's episode 16 has 2,341 comments vs Healer's Ep16 2,198 comments! So here I am thinking, I have got to go back there and read some comments and reply at least to beat 2,341 :P
....and what do I find when clicking on a random page? Comments about armpit hairs and moles!!! ROFL girls, I have never laughed so much in my life! Every comment there was too hilarious to the point of me having stitches laughing! I saw a comment over at ep17 while commenting that some asks more armpit and moles...thought that was funny but I didn't get the joke. But boy now I do LOL

Hmm I wonder why he had it removed. I hope it's more medical reasons though not cosmetic because hey...moles on the body are attractive ya know? When I dig up a large patch of common white clover, tap roots and all, would I see the finger-like nodules?
Required fields are marked *
meniscus
February 8, 2015 at 1:54 PM
@snickers
Yes you would! You would see the clover root systems bearing little nodules that contains Rhizobium. Here's an image of what you would see if you dug up a clover plant http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4TgnjLXeZTI/UnVKQzBPONI/AAAAAAAAAiM/4vHCUcP3sC8/s1600/IMG_3561.JPG
Notice how the nodules have fingerlike shape? These roots are have Rhizobium in them.
meniscus
February 8, 2015 at 1:58 PM
As oppose to soybean nodules, and this image is taken from a scientific paper.
http://www.intechopen.com/source/html/41171/media/image1.png
On the left, is the wild-type- WT (i.e. natural root) of the soybean root. On the right is the supernodulating mutant plant that have Bradyrhizobium japonicum (bacteria) inoculated in them beforehand - hence it explains why it has more nodules. Notice with this one the nodules are more rounded :)
meniscus
February 8, 2015 at 2:03 PM
Although the majority of the time it may not look as finger-like for a white clover and sometimes it may be hard to tell. Common clover depending on conditions may even have slightly round nodules when inoculated. Here's an image:

You're welcome, you're science beanie too? That's really awesome and physics is certainly interesting field! Unfortunately I was never that great at mathematics so that's the reason why I didn't get into that field of science, although I love chemistry and biological sciences :) I understand your curiosity because I am exactly the same... I always question things and have a natural curiosity to find out haha. Yep JB can always delete the content but like you said it doesn't take up that much space so I hope she doesn't, I enjoy discussing about science stuff as much as I enjoy Healer. Okay maybe I lied, I enjoyed Healer just that tad bit more than science at the moment. But hey, maybe I could bring our science focus into JCW/Healer related stuff right? ;)

Oh talk about physics, do you watch The Big Bang Theory? I totally love that show! And Sheldon and Amy are my favourite characters lol.
snickers
February 8, 2015 at 11:18 PM
@meniscus
I'm a "cord-cutter." I get whatever broadcast TV from rabbit-ears. CBS signal is usually impossible to pick up. So, not much Big Bang Theory, other than reruns sometimes. It can be streamed, but I very rarely bother with it. Save the broadband data limit for "necessary" stuff.
Based on the old reruns, I can certainly identify with Sheldon. Some of the questions I asked other grad students! They collectively decided not to talk about certain subjects before me so I wouldn't make them explain. However, that was a long time ago. Once I learned some, much else could be inferred.

If YS were pregnant, she probably won't be chowing down just ice cream. Perhaps some weird combo of ice cream, kimchi, anchovies...
JH hasn't ever dealt with a woman's cycles or PMS. Pregnancy will KILL him. Also, the father tends to gain weight with the mother. Suddenly he'll find himself huffing and puffing.

FANS PROJECT - Submissions to the Cast and Crew!!!
Great News - This email address, [email protected] is going to be given to the Cast and Crew of Healer. This means that any messages we write to anyone in the Production Team will be accessible to them!!! We just need to hope that they'll keep looking out for our emails.
If we want our messages to be organized and to reach them by their End of Show Party time I think on 11 Feb night, we need to send today. HOWEVER, even if messages are sent after the 10 Feb deadline, S Korean time, it is possible that the cast and crew will still read them as they will have access to this email address!!!
Advice from Sanika of the organizers:
*** To reach the right persons "write separate emails to each individual and mention the name of the person in the Subject of the email. Eg _ Fan Message - Ji Chang Wook. It will be easier to organize the folders and the corresponding person would easily find all the messages addressed to him/her.
...we need to send it to the the Staff by 11th Feb Morning so that they can see the stuff in the evening party. I have saving all the Videos in the GDrive. So as long as they have a good Internet connection, they should be able to see it."
"... But in case you are late, the email should still be functional :) Hopefully the Staff will continue checking it ;)
... we will be handing over the ID and password of this email to the writer and the staff on the 11th Feb morning (Korean time). I cannot guarantee that they will keep checking it long term.
If you wish to send videos to writer SJN, I would recommended that you get in touch with ruizaio on Soompi. She is a registered fan member on the writers professional website and she could help you get in touch with her after the deadline of the project."

So what are you waiting for Healer Lovers? If you love the show and want let the people who've been working so hard to give us this great drama know how we feel, now's the time to tell them and it's so easy. Just email your messages to each person in separate email with their names in the Subject of each email.
We can really thank them for giving us what we wanted in a show ... and even ask Writer-nim if she read us by any chance ...LOL! What a great thing to do this Monday!!! :D

When do you believe Jung Hoo first fell in love with Young Shin?
I think for me, is when she first danced with her father. It was the first time for him to hear, hope terrified she was of him when he first clipped her nails in the public bathroom. I think from that moment he knew she was brave, even when she was afraid. I recall him later on, retelling Ahjumma that Young Shin reminds him of a wild cat, that had a broken limp, yet fought with the hyenas to save herself. :)

This was someone's answer actually in soompi which I loved :)
❤ ❥ ♡ ♥
To answer someone who asked when JH fell in love with YS. I always felt that it happened on the roof, when YS convinced the actress not to commit suicide. It might not be the moment he completely fell in love but it was the moment that changed everything, a moment that made him see her differently. Before that, he thought of her as an ordinary girl but when the incident of the roof happened, I could see that he was very moved and touched by her words. Of course, his feelings for her only grew deeper and deeper each time he was around her.
Little something I made for a moment that I loved in episode 18. JH sentence to her, "you always wake me up",
implies to several deep meanings. I interpret it as he wanted to say she's always there for him in the crucial moments,
she gives him the will to live, she always give him strength and motivation to fight another day. She's like the sun that
gives him life, therefore she always wake him up (as mentioned before the pendant he gave her is also sun shaped).
It's a perfect example why I absolutely love the dialogues and the little details in this drama.

Hmmm...I think it might be when they were running away from the evil man (I can't remember his name) who beat a woman in front of them.
The smile that JH as PBS at that time gave while looking at YS when she grabbed his hand to run was so meaningful - JB said it best in the recap - a smile that is a mixture of admiration, amusement and maybe even proud of YS's gutsy and spunky personality.
Maybe it was then that he was beginning to like her. ;)

@TurkishRose
That's such a nice question.I dont think its cuz of one particular moment.
I think it slowly crept up on him. She was his work first, then object of curiosity(dance in cafe), object of fascination(suicide scene), object of admiration(when gangsters cornered them and she told him to run away) , which all gave a feeling protectiveness he has not felt for any girl before. Am sure feelings started a little bit then.
But I think the turning point was when she confessed about her crushes. Its she who totally blurred that line and made him face the things that was brimming deep within him.
I mean seriously, what guy can take it when the girl says he likes him without knowing its him??? I think he lost it that night. Followed by jealousy creeping up (when MH showed up in someday), followed by wanting to help her and get back for her(getting the video and beating up the trash guy), followed by wanting to meet her as Healer( am pretty sure he did it on purpose cuz there are so many other ways he could have given them to her without letting her know he is around) , and THAT handhold which intensified the feelings and attraction followed by liking her care and understanding despite not expecting that from world ever before. That's when he started connecting to her from heart and finally couldn't take the misunderstanding in any way(hence the kiss).
You know what ? I give up on my analysis ! Like true love, even he will never know when exactly he fell in love with her!

February 8, 2015 at 5:57 PM
@Divyrus Great analysis. It's always hard to pinpoint when true love first started, am I right? And I really do think it was a slow process that involved communication and learning about the Young Shin as a complete person, which is 1000X better than "love at first sight"

Yes yes ! Love at first sight can only contribute attraction and a curiosity , beyond that its all in the person !

I think hers must be the most complicated with 3 different personalities being the same guy !/

@Divyrus
For me, Young-shin's love requires a major leap. She had a crush with the idea of Healer, pretty much an urban legend, knowing nothing about the real person.
I considered an alternate reality where Healer Inc. is a husband and wife operation. YS would have been crushing on a married man with 4 kids or something. Healer then would be a cheating bastard. If not, he would have his male apprentice sub for him regarding YS.
YS loving PBS-Healer was acceptable. Her loving JH, who is both and more, still feels a bit shaky for me.
However, there are women who are obsessed with jailed criminals/serial killers. Some married them. Not the best example. But I suppose loving an idea of a person can be just as real.

@TurkishRose If I had to choose a moment, which I don't really think there was a precise moment where JH just fell in love with YS, but a more gradual process, I'd have to say that the moment when YS convinced the actress from committing suicide was when he first developed a bond with her but the moment when love first blossomed was when they ran into the SS goons in the alleyway and she told him to run away first while she handles the situation. :D

So this is called love??? This is the feeling when you don't want anyone to leave or leave anything precious???? I hope other beanies are still in their senses and will reach the goal :)
It was my 1st Tim to post comments in DB (healer's and JCW's magic) .. I have said this many times, but DB is such a such a such a sanctuary of fan communities! I have followed many shows and books (multiple fandoms) , and all I have found is over the years hate culture is so so so prelavent that I just moved away and if its not hate culture , its stupid forums and snarky reviews just for clicks.
But over years , this is the ONE place where I have never seen negativity floating around. This is the site where there is everything that is good about fandoms and online community! That's why I always keep coming back here. And I never thought I would also be a part of this instead of a lurker one day!

SJN tends to write her heroines as spunky, single career women. the LMH's character was a bit similar to healer too, lacking the will to live after having been left by the people in his life. he also sleeps A LOT lol. and when they bicker the heroine tends to kick the guy's shin too like CYS haha

Who's here are up for some science? I'm planning to explain the biological side to why we are so attracted to JCW and why we are getting all these "feels" later on once I'm home (and not tired that is) ;) also some anatomical dissection of his physical traits and (maybe for those down in the gutter) why we 'lust' after him...haha okay maybe lust is a bit too much since that will involve talking about certain hormones like oestrogen (testosterone for guys) coming into play. I should focus more on why Healer makes us get all these feels and the biological reasoning behind it for those interested :)

This idea was thanks to TurkishRose for bringing it up btw ;) although I'm am not too much of an expertise in human as I am for plants - it's been almost 5 years since I majored in human biology, but I shall try to explain it scientifically.

I'd be interested to read a scientific explanation... not too technical but good enough to understand our makeup and why some things attract us the way they do. :)

Haha sure, it's easy to get technical when it comes to explaining science but I'll make sure to keep it simple and easy enough to understand. If anything I'll explain some terms just in case and make it interactive by adding videos or pics rather than too much text :)

I was thinking, for the healer fan project we Healer Beanies can all work together on something quick and sweet.
Write down your favorite quote from ep 1-18 below and then I or someone else can compile it and turn it into a jpeg to send to the International Project. Include your nickname, real name, or dramabeans name that you'll want to appear. Please participate! :D We only have a few hours left!!
So many awesome but mine will be (hopefully with everyone's help, we'l manage to compile all the best quotes):
Mine: “Instead of someone you’re waiting for who won’t come, how about me, who’s next to you? If you want, I can live the way you want me to. For a long time, staying careful right next to you".-Ep. 10 Dramapenchant

2) MH to JH: Being happy to see someone you haven't seen in a long time and being curious about what they've been up to. Don't you know how that feels?"
3) MH to JH: "Do you have friends? Do you have anyone to ask you if you do have friends?"
4) YS to Healer in the email; "If I wanted you to, will you hear to what I have to say? Will you be here for me? Will you be watching my back. I just need to know that you will."

“Jung-hoo rests his head in her lap (…but… the Elder’s house…)”
While watching this scene, I thought this was one of the first times this show did something glaringly unrealistic. But looking back, it did something interesting artistically. From that point forward I watched in unease, because they were way too relaxed for what they had just done.
We’ve been calling them the Scooby Gang, but I thought the last two episodes have echoed Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring. It started when Secretary Oh was having his Smeagal/Gollum moment in the library. Healer pitied him like Frodo. As power-broker, the Elder emerged as Sauron. MS was like Saruman. And MH would be Gandolf.
This episode switched to the scene outside the Doors of Durin. The Elder becomes the Dragon. While breaching the gates of his empire, things became too quiet. Never a good sign. Like when The Watcher was silently racing underwater towards the Fellowship. Getting into position to attack them. In this episode, the Elder seemed to go silent after the broadcast, then emerged to attack in a barrage of the ‘tentacles’ of his organization: lawsuits, criminal charges, government agency seizures, fabricated news stories, and kidnapping by underworld agents. Hopefully the next two episodes has the fellowship entering the Dragon’s lair and finding the spot for the mortal arrow. Sadly, I suspect MH will meet the fate of Gandolf (but, likewise, his demise will advance their cause). And MH, like Galandriel, will provide their guiding light and eventual place of refuge.

“Moon-shik retires to his study after dinner, and his mind flashes back to his first encounter with the Elder. And now we see what happens next: Moon-shik accepts that deal, and gives a witness statement to the police that he saw Joon-seok killing Gil-han. Interestingly, the first statement is given while he’s bloody, terrified, and shaking. The second time, Moon-shik is resigned and dead-eyed.”
In the present day, the memory doesn’t even stir a pang of regret as he sits there, idly eating Ji-an’s birthday cookies, soul unruffled. Or maybe absent.
I love what the writer is doing here (and the acting). What they showed us is so true to life. People become corrupt through the process of their conscience going through a gradual process of hardening. When they start down the slippery slope of evil, they are uneasy. But because human nature is inherently morally relativistic, bad company corrupts. The lies get easier and their conscience falls silent.
What crossed my mind during the scenes with the cookies was the idiom “that’s how the cookie crumbles”. A good explanation of that is:
“something that you say which means that bad things sometimes happen and there is nothing you can do to prevent it, so it is not worth becoming upset about it”
I think that’s how MS has come to view the harm that happens to people who oppose the Farmers. And tying the cookie to MH and YS via parallel scenes, said that’s the way he feels about deceiving MH that her daughter is dead and his role in YS’s crumbled early childhood.

@Gidget
I read your analyses with interest, and it makes me feel that we've "lost" many great thoughts for the recaps/comments because you were so tied up. :)
I read a review of this episode on Couch Kimchi which had the reviewer upset by this episode because of several things not making sense suddenly. Suddenly JH and YS behave as if all danger is past and there is no more fight to continue. It is perhaps true that they never intended to take the fight all the way to the Elder except in that JH could clear his father's name for himself and YS. It does seem rather short-sighted, from where we are.
I was saying the JH has still a ways to go in thinking for the longer term and beyond his own wants and needs. I believe/hope the events in these last 2 episodes will shake him up to grow up a bit more in these areas.
SJN's take on corruption of the conscience is true to life, however, there is still the question about MS's delusions. He has been able to absolve himself from all blame and instead place it upon others. It is frustrating since then, he will never see the need to be punished.
His only redemption seems to be if he can love either Myung Hee or Moon Ho enough to stop the evil that could befall them, even if it means the ultimate sacrifice.

Thanks! And I really like reading what you have to say.
You're always such an encouragement to anyone who posts here. It's a gift. You've been a big part of shaping this comment section into a wonderful community that's caused a lot of people to de-lurk.
I see what you mean about JH not thinking ahead. That would tie neatly to the leopard metaphor for his character. They're opportunistic, operate on instinct, and only work hard enough to take care of today's needs. Great point about his youth and need to learn to think ahead.
Regarding MS conscience, or lack thereof, isn't that what hardening does? I don't know that he'll ever see his own culpability. The only thing I can see him caring about is Mho or MHee being threatened. But I think that unless something changes even that'd be out of self interest.
I've always thought that for hardened people, even their 'love' becomes a selfish emotion. They're only giving to the people they want to receive something from. They'll never give more than they think will be needed to motivate the other person to give them what they want. And they'll withhold good things if they think giving them would work against their self-interest.
Like you, I sure hope he has a redemptive moment that makes his heart supple again. A good redemptive arcs is my absolute favorite story element. :-)

“(As to the particulars of the case: I’m not 100 percent sure I’m understanding correctly, so correct me if I’m wrong, but the scene witnessed by Gil-han and Joon-seok showed the Farmers involved in a massive payoff that involved the willful use of bad construction materials. It turns this into a more dangerous issue than politicians merely stashing away illegal funds—that’s a bad enough thing, but at least not a direct threat to public safety.)”
You have the part about the construction defects right, but no, no no! This isn’t about the politicians at all!
What this story is really about is the power behind the throne. The historical equivalent would be stories about Korea’s puppet kings and the clans and foreign powers that put those kings in power. They didn't need to be the king to control the riches of the country. They could control the riches by controlling the king.
Figuratively, the Farmers 'plant' by putting their candidates in office. Then they harvest government spending dollars through those politicians.
One thing that stuck out to me early in the series was the english word-play of the title. Healer-Heeler.
Using American parallels:
The Elder is like a national-level political boss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_boss) along with the other “Farmers”. A political boss doesn’t need to be part of a political party.
MS is like a political “heeler” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_heeler) who is part of The Elder’s political machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_machine).
The best analogy I can think of that parallels how this works comes from The Devil Wears Prada. It's the scene when Amanda is telling Andy that she didn’t choose the cerulean blue sweater she was wearing, it was chosen for her by the people who control the fashion industry. In the same way, in major elections the voters are usually only choosing from among the candidates who were already chosen for them. And the ones doing the true choosing exist in a realm that's as much above the political parties and process as it's a part of it.

In the flashback scene when the money was being exchanged for corrosive chemicals, the henchmen weren't the Farmers. They were the Farmers' field laborers.
The friends thought they were tracking a scoop on a political slush fund. What they found was the underbelly of the Farmers' organization.

One of the main ways political power brokers benefit from government spending is through infrastructure construction projects. They back the building of roads, bridges, etc. And a way that they can create annuities for themselves is to accelerate the deterioration of the things they build. So what they build needs constant repairs or quick replacement.
The scenario shown in the drama was how the Farmers accelerate the deterioration of the bridges their companies build through applying corrosive chemicals to the metal.
There's a real life parallel to this in how our roads are now being constructed here in the US. There are two new things our road contractors are now doing. 1) thinning a road base by laying down less material and not compacting it sufficiently and 2) creating lengthwise seams that run along the edges of the lanes. Both contribute to premature asphalt failure. A road-base that’s too thin and not adequately compacted will quickly develop swales and cracking. The edges of the seams quickly break down, crumble and create mini potholes. These two things ensure our roads will quickly need repairs. Who benefits? Unions (they have an exclusive right to do work for the government and are political heelers) Environmental players (they get funds every time road work is done and are also political heelers) and Heavy Construction companies (which have traditionally been notoriously corrupt.)
So the drama isn’t talking about political slush funds. It’s about how how a nation’s power-players orchestrate the political landscape for financial gain. This doesn’t just happen in Korea. It’s also dominated the US political landscape for the past several years. To a shocking degree. More than people can possibly imagine.

This is scary and true. When manipulation makes money more easily procured, integrity is abandoned.

@Gidget, wonderful analysis, and I think you summed it up pretty well in here:
So the drama isn’t talking about political slush funds. It’s about how how a nation’s power-players orchestrate the political landscape for financial gain.

Yup! And a major part of that orchestration is to hold hostage the major political positions - and that includes the Seoul mayoralty, and maybe all the way up to the presidency.

@dramabliss, yes to think real life is like this, is quite scary. Especially with all the political angst going around the world.

@TR and DB
:-)
Yep, all the way to the Presidency. That's the end-game.
Some people at the top are more scary than others. To figure out who to be most scared of: calculate the body-count left in their wake. And among those, the unusual number of sudden 'suicides' and 'heart attacks' in otherwise happy and healthy people.
The writer and network are making a bold and necessary statement with this show. Hopefully there will be more like it.
Here's the outline of a good story: There is a strong country that's been a stabilizing force in the world's political environment. In particular, it's been holding in-check nations/empires with an unrepentant history of aggressive hostilities and expansionism.
A charismatic presidential candidate suddenly appears out of obscurity. A massive money-center-initiated crisis emerges on the eve of the election and the candidate addresses it cooly and comfortably. A public is obliviously content to trust the candidate because they (believe they) chose him and he is the best man for the job.
After the election the government starts borrowing an amount of of money that's both staggering and unfathomable. The borrowing agency for that debt isn't required to provide a public accounting of where the borrowed money is going. And that mysteriously never gains any traction with the media. Instead, it simply parrots that it was used to stabilize the economy. The lower level politicians aren't asking any questions because they're happily lapping up the increasing number of crumbs that are falling from the table.
At the outset, re-set buttons had been curiously delivered by ambassadors as tokens of a vague-seeming promise. If only the unsuspecting public understood the use of metaphors. Because the story slowly reveals what had just happened was a sovereign wealth transfer intended to create economic vulnerability and open the door to a massive re-set of the global balance of power. Tyrany is about to make a comeback.

@Gidget you should major in political science, if you aren't already :). So perfect, and I wish this topic could be discussed even further. I love politics, and you couldn't agree more with what you have already started. But that one statement, To figure out who to be most scared of: calculate the body-count left in their wake. seriously look at the world today, and the death toll, and you will see how true your words are. More than perfect analysis good job??

Forgive me if this was discussed from previous pages, as I haven't got a chance to read it *yet... (promise I'll read each one after this is over)
But I just have to get this out of my head...
1) At the Elder's lair while JH is lapping... errr, resting on YS' lap, when JH asked YS if she's gonna be there as he tries to live a normal life, and YS answers, "Yes..." the look on YS' face puzzles me, as if she's troubled or unconvinced if they can pull it through together.
My thought: Maybe she's worried for JH that it won't be easy for him to live normally and that he may got bored and decide to leave in the end...?
2) At YS room when she found JH there and told him to give her a birthday present, then JH readily give her the pendant... her looks suddenly changed from excitement to disappointment.
My thought: Maybe she didn't expect that JH has a readily available gift to her... and because JH is such a naive boyfriend who would worry that he had nothing to give her, he would have asked JH for an alternative, say... a HUG, or a KISS... or SOMETHING else..??? *wink *wink
But then again, there's THAT worthless pendant... *darn, I swear not only YS had that frustrated look that night
*Well, that's me... anyone else have any idea about that YS expressions?

@Polaris
I've missed you dear Polaris!!
I read these comments somewhere... might have been here or elsewhere.
1) I agree that she's thinking about how he was so alert and alive as Healer and that was all he knew, and she's probably comparing that to "normal" life and wondering if he can put up with it. I don't think she is worried that he'll leave, only that he'll get bored. Living the normal life was not something that she asked him to do for her, so she's probably running that by and trying to figure out if it could work.
2) I believe YS is a little shocked that JH has no clue about what makes an acceptable present for a girlfriend. Partly she wanted to make it hard for him to show that she should not be taken for granted, and she seriously wanted to teach him what normally should be done. :)

Thanks, Doc!
Yes, you're right about her not thinking of him leaving since she's assured how JH loves and needs her.. and yes, she's probably pressured by the idea of how she can help JH lives a normal life seeing he depends on her solely... nice one!
On the gift, wow... it's just now that occured to me that JH didn't know how to "normally" give a gift, despite him being a romantic date and all (oh! that's Ajumma at the theater... *sigh)
But still... if I, *YES! I mean... ME* were YS, I would still prefer a HUG, or a KISS, or SOMETHING... more than a worthless pendant!
That's why you get kick for a backhug!!! Good for you for blowing our chance for a squee-worthy-scene!
