Healer: Episode 16

Is that the “oh shit” face you’re wearing right now? Because it’s mountain after mountain for our Healer, whose every step forward is dogged by setbacks that land him in some new kind of peril at every turn. On the upside, the Scooby gang is solidifying and gaining members, and I absolutely love that. On the downside, all that new peril I just mentioned.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Young-shin gets picked up by Moon-shik, thinking he’s taking her to meet his wife for an interview. She seems uneasy, but there’s no reason for her to refuse, so off she goes.

Jung-hoo locates the home of an ex-detective, intent on tracking down what happened to his father’s missing police statement. The man seems locked inside his head as he plays cards alone, and his daughter explains that he doesn’t speak. Jung-hoo sits down anyway and tries to ask questions about the 1992 case.

He finally gets his attention by playing a turn in the card game, which gets a reaction from the ex-officer, and Jung-hoo presses him to talk about the old case. Particularly the statement he took from the suspect named Seo Joon-seok.

The officer repeats that name, then says that “we” had to quit the force because of him. The daughter confirms, remembering being evicted from home in 1992, and provides the name of the other officer who met a similar fate: Park Dong-chul.

Jung-hoo gives the name to Min-ja to track down. She grumps that she’s not a machine who just spits out answers, to which he retorts that she pretty much is. Then she spots something on her map that sets her on alert.

She calls Moon-ho just as he arrives at the newspaper and hears that Young-shin scored the interview with Myung-hee after all. Ajumma informs him that Young-shin’s cell phone is being tracked, and she’s just arrived “at a place I don’t much care for.” She decided against informing Jung-hoo first, predicting that he’d go charging in.

Moon-shik takes Young-shin to Jeil Newspaper, and his string of praise for her recent work is puzzling, since her recent work stained his name and all. She explains having an interview scheduled, but Moon-shik says that he has already informed his wife of its cancellation. Over at the house, Myung-hee prepares freshly baked cookies and deflates when her housekeeper gives her the message.

He asks Young-shin not to meet his wife just yet, and explains that he has heard that there are dangerous people in Young-shin’s orbit. Well technically that’s not a lie if he’s talking about himself, but he specifically drops the name Seo Jung-hoo. When she pretends not to understand, he muses that “maybe only Moon-ho knows the relationship.”

Moon-shik takes out that old photo and identifies himself and his wife, and watches her reaction carefully as he points out Seo Joon-seok. He also points to Teacher and says he recently died, which is enough for Young-shin to start connecting dots in her head, though she does a good job of keeping a poker face.

Moon-shik describes meeting Teacher recently, who’d said he’d turned Jung-hoo into the Healer. Teacher at least stopped at reasonable limits, but Jung-hoo, that kid… well, he’s “started to cross the line.”

Young-shin asks plainly what she’s doing here. Moon-shik replies that his brother has joined forces with the Healer to oppose him, and he’s been told that Young-shin is quite close with Moon-ho. So he asks for her help in stopping them, “before they commit even bigger crimes.”

He calls in a certain Manager Ahn to brief her, saying she has to know the full story in order to join their side. Manager Ahn handles special investigations for Jeil Newspaper and introduces her to the Healer investigation team, and while she doesn’t place a great deal of stock in their accounting of Healer’s crimes, for now she has to sit through it.

Moon-ho charges into his brother’s office and warns Moon-shik to mess with him, not the kids. Moon-shik replies that he’s going to help the kids: He’ll turn Young-shin into a good reporter, and get Jung-hoo a good lawyer so he can turn himself in and be reintroduced to society. He has the gall to say he’s doing it “because I am their fathers’ friend.” You mean like Teacher said before you had him killed?

It’s so absurd that Moon-ho can only laugh incredulously in his face.

Young-shin practically rolls her eyes while the Jeil team presents the Healer as a loose cannon and cold-blooded killer. She fidgets impatiently, knowing the full story, but her old panic response starts to kick in—her breathing grows labored and her vision blurs. Is it from seeing Jung-ho’s photograph on he board?

The Jeil team gets a phone call from the ex-officer’s daughter, reporting dutifully that somebody came by asking after Seo Joon-seok. As instructed, she supplied the name Park Dong-chul. The Jeil employee informs Manager Ahn that their bait was taken.

Young-shin approaches the board and reaches a shaking hand out to the (mostly obscured) photo of Jung-hoo. She’s still rattled when she leaves the meeting, which is when Moon-ho finds her.

As they head to the car, Young-shin fills Moon-ho in on what his brother said about Jung-hoo being the Healer and working against him. Moon-ho readily confirms that he’s working with Jung-hoo.

But the strange meeting has made her start questioning things that don’t make sense—like why such an important person as Moon-shik would personally come to give her a ride, and why Moon-ho would do the same. It’s suspicious enough that when he approaches, she involuntarily steps back. He clocks her reaction and stops, while she asks him about the piece of fingernail he hired Healer to take from her. Why?

Moon-ho sees that there’s no more delaying and says that the time has come to tell her. Without further ado, he reveals, “Your biological mother is alive.” Oh phew. I was so nervous that he’d find yet more excuses to prolong the discovery.

Her first reaction is to laugh, but it soon becomes clear that he’s not joking as he explains that Myung-hee is her birth mother. “And your name is Oh Ji-an.”

He apologizes for not saying so earlier, admitting, “I was afraid, so I kept pushing it back.”

Young-shin struggles to take this in, blinking back tears. When Moon-ho steps toward her, again she backs away instinctively.

Ajumma traces ex-cop Park Dong-chul to a seedy club, and the whole thing leaves both her and Jung-hoo with an uneasy feeling. She thinks it’s too easy, and while he agrees, he decides to see the lead through: “I’ll have to turn a trap into a road.”

Jung-hoo steps inside and asks for Park Dong-chul, which prompts the employee and the club manager to whisper and stare at Jung-hoo. She quietly makes a phone call and Jung-hoo is told to wait. This could not look more suspicious if they tried.

At home, Dad casts worried looks at Young-shin’s bedroom, not sure how to approach her. In the aftermath of all this news exploding in her face, she has retreated to a corner of her room, huddling under a curtain. She reaches for her phone.

Jung-hoo lounges around the club until two thugs arrive to take care of him. Before they can get down to it, Young-shin calls, and he carries on a normal conversation with her while taking down his two attackers, barely even paying them any heed.

At first he doesn’t catch on to her strange mood when she tells him of meeting Moon-shik, who knows he’s the Healer. But gradually he clues in that something’s wrong; her voice is dull and her gaze vacant as recounts Moon-shik’s warnings that Jung-hoo is dangerous.

Then she mentions hearing from Moon-ho about her birth mother, surprising Jung-hoo so much that a thug sneaks in a punch to the face. He tells her he’ll call back, then quickly takes down his attacker and demands Park Dong-chul’s information from the scared club manager.

Jung-hoo slips outside just before the thug’s reinforcements arrive. He sticks a tracker on the vehicle, then tells ajumma to find out who these guys are—they’re not Double S guards.

That question gets answered for us when Jeil’s Manager Ahn issues instructions to bring Jung-hoo in on the Elder’s orders.

When Jung-hoo returns Young-shin’s call, however, she ignores the phone. Slumping to the ground listlessly, she picks up a photo of herself as a child with her mother. In flashback, we see Moon-ho providing her with documents and an explanation:

In contrast with her current condition, Young-shin is brusque and calm as she listens to Moon-ho describe the accident in 1992. He hands over Myung-hee’s hospital records, which list epileptic fits, brain injury, and depression; stress is a particular trigger. Moon-ho describes possible further damage if the oxygen supply is cut off to her brain, or even death.

Despite improvements over the years, Myung-hee can’t control her reactions to mention of Ji-an: “Your death memorial and your birthday—it’s like she lives just for those two days a year.”

He asks if she remembers anything, but she says dully that the only childhood memories she has are of standing by the highway with cars whizzing by.

Moon-ho asks her to understand that he didn’t tell her because he wanted to keep her mother alive. She replies that it’s easy to understand that she can’t tell Myung-hee she’s her daughter, but asks why he didn’t at least tell her.

In the present, Dad enters Young-shin’s room and sees her lying on the ground, ignoring the phone. Locked in flashback, Young-shin asks Moon-ho why she was abandoned. He says she was lost, then supposedly dead. Then when he admits to preventing Jung-hoo from telling her, she says with a bitter smile, “He wasn’t on my side then, Seo Jung-hoo.”

He has more to explain, but she shuts him down here, saying she’ll handle it herself. “Because you can’t trust me?” he asks. She says yes, then tells him that her name is Chae Young-shin, not that other one.

Now in her bedroom, Young-shin seems like she’s ready to burrow into bed forever, brooding—until suddenly she’s not. She shakes her head clear, gets out of bed, and starts picking up the mess. Aw, she’s back. Way to go, you.

Then one document catches her eye, and the name crashes into her brain: Oh Gil-han. The friend killed by Jung-hoo’s father. She rears back in horror.

At the bustling Someday office, the constant ringing of the phone has Reporter Yeo so on edge that he hilariously snaps that Chae Young-shin has disappeared on her beleaguered team and probably got dumped. HA. But since it was Myung-hee calling, she hangs up in disappointment.

She calls Moon-ho to ask about Young-shin, wondering about the interview. Moon-ho tamps down his own emotion as he says that Young-shin is dealing with a difficult personal issue, so asking to meet her would be “cruel.” Myung-hee scoffs at his exaggeration, but she gets the point.

Jung-hoo charges into the cafe to see Young-shin, slipping past Dad when he tries to insist on a talk. Upon his entrance, Young-shin freezes up to see him, but he just envelops her in a relieved hug, saying he was worried. She starts to return the hug, but drops her hand at the last moment.

He picks up on her strange mood, asking if she’s upset because he didn’t tell her about her mother. When she shakes her head no, he encourages her to get angry with him. She says that he did nothing wrong, which isn’t convincing to his ears, and he asks why she won’t look at him.

Then she starts crying, and he looks for something to say, mentioning how Moon-ho’s not such a bad guy for accepting the beating he delivered for lying. When he says he met Myung-hee, she asks, “She met you, and she was okay?” It’s a weird thing to say, and now Jung-hoo is sure something’s up. Grabbing the papers from her, he sees her father’s name and realizes, “It was this? It was about my father and your father?”

He admits that he knew but couldn’t tell her, “Because I was afraid you’d be like this.” She says that it doesn’t matter, but he points out that her reaction says otherwise. And when he steps toward her, she backs away. Ah, that hurts. You can see that she’s conflicted with herself for reacting this way, but she can’t help it.

He steps back to give her space and explains that he was looking for evidence to clear his father of the crime, and that he was going to tell her after he’d found it. With that, he quietly exits.

But moments later, Young-shin flies downstairs to stop him before he leaves. She entreats, “You have to find it and come back.” Oh thank goodness she isn’t giving up so easily. He nods with a small smile, “Okay.”

And then she adds, “Even if you don’t find it, come back.” He agrees.

She promises to look for that evidence too, and tells him, “You’re not a bad person.” Full of emotion, they embrace, while Dad and ajusshi drop their utensils in shock.

Jung-hoo wipes her tears from her face and leaves, since they’ve got an audience and all… and then he turns back, Dads be damned, for that goodbye kiss.

That night, Manager Ahn’s minions follow ex-detective Park Dong-chul and slip a tracker on him. The club lady provided Jung-hoo with this address, so now they’ll wait for the “target” to show up.

Thus Jung-hoo’s arrival at the scene gets spotted by the team. Thankfully he notices them, and more thankfully still, they don’t notice that he noticed. He manages to whirl Park Dong-chul into an alley unseen, and when Ahn’s team follows his tracker, they’re just led to the other half of their team, and find the tracker stuck to their car. Outsmarted!

From hacker central, Min-ja mutters at their stupidity and starts singing “I Am the Best.” Yes, we know, ajumma.

Jung-hoo takes Park Dong-chul to an empty church, and the man has already guessed that he’s Seo Joon-seok’s son, because “they” warned him that he’d come. They offered payment in exchange for being alerted to Jung-hoo’s actions.

Park Dong-chul says that it was Jung-hoo’s father’s fault that his life went down the drain. Jung-hoo remarks that all he wants is his father’s statement, but it sure is curious how violently the opposition is reacting.

He explains how the statement went missing, so he decided to track down the man who took it: Park Dong-chul.

Park scoffs that finding the statement is pointless, because it was falsified from the start: The one Dad gave is not the one that got recorded. Park Dong-chul and his colleague reported the offense internally and suffered for it. And now, I suppose it’s easier for the man to blame the dead Seo Joon-seok rather than some nameless, faceless evil.

Jung-hoo asks what his father said in his statement, and whether he admitted to killing anybody. Park realizes, “You… really don’t know anything, do you?” So tell us!

Late at the office, Moon-ho finds a pleasant surprise when Young-shin drops by bearing snacks and smiles. She admits to being unable to stay angry for long, and has a lot of things to ask him.

She starts by asking if they knew each other when she was young. I love how happy he looks as he confirms how super-tight they were, and he tells her about the parents working together and being incredibly close. Young-shin asks if she knew Jung-hoo back then, and Moon-ho says that they cried every time they met. “Because we fought?” she asks. “No,” Moon-ho answers. “Because you didn’t want to split up.”

Young-shin laughs, and decides that Jung-hoo must’ve cried first. “It’d be nice if I remembered,” she says wistfully.

She laughs more when Moon-ho informs her that Jung-hoo’s her oppa—by one month. (LOL. This was briefly mentioned before, that Jung-hoo was born in December and Ji-an in January, so technically he was a “year” older and therefore oppa, since Koreans count their age by birth year.)

Then Moon-ho tells her that her birthday is tomorrow, for which Myung-hee’s probably already busily preparing a bunch of food (which explains all the cookies and cakes). It sparks an emotional response in Young-shin, to finally know when her birthday is. Then she mentions the bad blood between Moon-ho and his brother, and his mood grows heavy as she asks why.

Back to Jung-hoo. Park Dong-chul drops a bomb when he admits to safeguarding a tape recording of Dad’s statement all these twenty years—and he told the other guys about it too, angling for a price. Jung-hoo immediately quadruples the offer, desperate to have the tape.

Park senses the chance to wring even more money out of the deal and tries to play Jung-hoo against the Elder. Jung-hoo tries to impress upon him just how very much he does not want to mess around with these bad guys, who would think nothing of killing him for it.

Jung-hoo begs the man to take his money and hand over the tape, and to save his life in the process. But Park fishes around in his pocket for something…

Moon-shik checks on Myung-hee that night, tucking her into bed before heading to his office. He smiles down at a photograph of himself and Myung-hee, not noticing that there’s a tiny device mounted to the underside.

He answers a call from Manager Ahn, who reports that the target just now turned on the cell phone. Crap, that was the thing in the pocket, wasn’t it? But on the upside, Myung-hee is totally listening to the call—she must have planted that bug! Go you, awesome lady.

Myung-hee listens to her husband ordering Ahn to mobilize everyone: “If that kid is the Healer as I suspect, he’ll be particularly skilled.” Ahn asks for a list of priorities to dictate how they respond in a worst-case scenario: Is it more important to get Seo Joon-seok’s recorded statement, or to get rid of Jung-hoo?

Myung-hee contains her gasp of shock as Moon-shik replies that the Elder cannot have such a tape leaking. At least Jung-hoo’s hit takes the backseat for now.

Moon-ho and Young-shin are heading out when he receives a call from Myung-hee, who hurriedly tips him off about Jung-hoo being in danger.

As she and Moon-ho head out, Young-shin calls Jung-hoo right away, warning him of the situation and urging him to run. Ajumma’s linked in too, issuing directions to the church and planning to send police at the right moment.

Jung-hoo turns sharp eyes on Park Dong-chul, who realizes he’s been sniffed out and tries to run. Jung-hoo grabs him, and Park makes excuses about how he had to do this. Jung-hoo turns the phone off, cutting the tracking signal, but the henchmen are already on the way.

Desperate and feeling time slipping away, Jung-hoo says that his father’s tape is the most important thing. He tries to usher Park away for the time being, but the man resists, naively thinking of all the money that’s been promised him. Jung-hoo bursts out that those thugs aren’t going to let him live, but the man doesn’t see that.

So Jung-hoo begs for just one thing, needing confirmation that his father didn’t actually kill anybody. Park Dong-chul promises to tell him when the others arrive, just as the screech of tires sounds outside. As henchmen storm the church, Jung-hoo grabs Park whether he likes it or not and pulls him along.

But Jung-hoo has to stop to fight the men who come at him, alternately running away and then running after Park to keep him from running away.

They escape the church, and again get stopped when the men surround them and charge Jung-hoo with fists and feet flying. He holds his own despite being vastly outnumbered… and then a car pulls up and a man steps out wielding a heavy metal pipe.

Jung-hoo freezes in alarm, and watches as that pipe swings straight into the back of Park’s head.

Park starts to go down, and the world goes silent (in a frankly weird edit) as he falls in slow motion.

Jung-hoo lurches forward to catch his fall, but gets knocked aside. Park’s head slams into the sharp brick staircase with a sickening thud.

Jung-hoo stares in horror. Police sirens sound in the distance and Moon-ho’s car arrives, but the army of goons retreats swiftly. They’re gone before you know it.

Jung-hoo rushes to Park’s side and begs him to answer his question, but comes away with bloodied hands. Park makes a wheezing sound and struggles to open his eyes, not quite dead yet, and Jung-hoo leans in close to hear his words.

Young-shin runs up and takes in the scene: Jung-hoo kneeling before the man, the bloody pipe on the ground.

Jung-hoo rises to his feet and meets her eye with literal blood on his hands. Moon-ho joins her a second later, followed by police… and Jung-hoo runs.

COMMENTS

Ohhhh no, this doesn’t look good any way you slice it. It’s bad that he ran, but it’s also not like he should have stuck around to get arrested, especially when he’s already in murky waters with the law.

Even so, while I find this scenario itself highly angst-stirring, I’m not too worried about Young-shin’s reaction to the incriminating tableau. In a different drama I probably would be concerned, but this writer doesn’t pace her major plot points haphazardly; there’s always a certain thematic cohesion and direction, and not for nothing was this hour the Trust Episode.

For plot reasons it was important to see Young-shin’s reaction to learning the truth of her past, and I appreciated that we were shown the layers of conflict in the moment. It hurt to see her pushing both Moon-ho and Jung-hoo away, but I liked that I could see Young-shin disliking that about her own reaction—she doesn’t want to be suspicious, but she can’t just will herself into ignoring the doubts.

It was important to watch her work through her response, and I wouldn’t have wanted the drama to gloss it over—but given that it was such angsty material, I’m also relieved that this wasn’t belabored. I’ll attribute this to the writer’s skill, which isn’t in necessarily crafting wildly original stories (as we’ve noted, Healer has a lot of conventional elements, pulled from familiar stories), but in knowing what to draw out, and how much.

It’s one of those almost invisible skills, because there’s less of an obvious wow factor when your writer is gifted at finessing a scene for emotional impact and teasing out beats that make us squeal—or cry, or hurt—rather than, say, dropping amazing new twists. I think that may be part of why Healer has sparked a particularly fervent response amongst its fanbase, leaving even the fans wondering what exactly its pull is rooted in. Maybe Song Ji-nah is just a master puppeteer of heartstring-pulling. Like I said, that’s a gift.

Another thing that Song is deft at, which is something I particularly noticed and loved about Story of a Man, is the way she draws conflict out of people being weak and human, instead of purely evil. Okay, sometimes there’s pure evil in there, but many of the antagonizing forces are problems because they are weak, such as Park Dong-chul.

Granted he made me want to reach into my screen to beat some sense into him, refusing to see that he was playing with fire, but I found it so compelling the way he was half-talking to himself instead of Jung-hoo, trying to justify his reasons for betraying Jung-hoo—almost like he was asking for Jung-hoo’s understanding, or even blessing. He’d clung to his identity as a righteous cop whose life was ruined for sticking to his morals, and now he just wants to cash that in a little bit to make his difficult life a little easier. It’s too bad you can’t only sell a little bit of soul and keep the rest; it’s sort of an all-or-nothing deal when you’re talking about core integrity. That makes Park’s last-ditch effort woebegone and pathetic, and because it’s so desperate, it only deepens Jung-hoo’s own desperation.

You see this trait in other characters too, with various people creating complications because they’re just living out their own lives and doing their jobs, like Detective Yoon. I love these worlds that Writer Song creates, where everybody’s the hero of their own story, and there are lives being lived beyond the screen’s confines.

So back to the trust issue: Yes, Jung-hoo’s up a creek at the moment, but I don’t believe the writer gave us that awesome “come back to me” scene only to yank it out from under our feet in the same episode. My favorite moment was when Young-shin asked him to find the truth, and then asked him to come back even if he hadn’t found it. She trusts him anyway, and her faith isn’t contingent upon the existence of decades-old evidence. Which may in fact be just the thing Jung-hoo needs to hear, actually, if his last hope of having certainty is now dead and gone. He’s so desperate to hear the words telling him his father wasn’t a killer, even though he believes (mostly, almost entirely!) that Dad wasn’t—and maybe Young-shin’s display of faith is the example he needs to have faith himself.

(One last reminder: Please don’t live-watch the next episode in the post for a previous episode, because that makes every recap post a minefield of spoilers. I know not everybody harbors as much hatred of spoilers as I do, but those are the house rules. Don’t make me go over there and delete you!)

JB! Thank you so much for the recap and I'd like to apologize in behalf of all of us who might have gotten too excited and broke some house rules. *sheepish* We'll behave better next time, right gals? Fighting.

Surprisingly, I am not as upset with the turn of events in this episode. All the angst is necessary for the build up to the final act, and I'm willing to suffer through it all as long as we get our happy ending. SJN-sshi, PLEASE?

Not worried about what YS's reaction is gonna be too. Can't help it that I have full trust in our OTP that "they can make it if they together, their love is just enough~" lol. The kiss they shared was like a reassurance. And it wouldn't make any sense for her to distrust him now. That would be a huge setback to everything that has been built upon with regards to their relationship till now.

About SJN's writing, to quote JB: "It’s one of those almost invisible skills, because there’s less of an obvious wow factor when your writer is gifted at finessing a scene for emotional impact and teasing out beats that make us squeal—or cry, or hurt—rather than, say, dropping amazing new twists. I think that may be part of why Healer has sparked a particularly fervent response amongst its fanbase, leaving even the fans wondering what exactly its pull is rooted in. Maybe Song Ji-nah is just a master puppeteer of heartstring-pulling."

YES, YES, YES. I think, more than anything, SJN is a very effective writer and is already a master at crafting stories which may not be entirely new or original, but she refines them in such a way that is refreshing and compelling to watch. Plus, the characterization is just commendable. Special mention to our supergirl YS, who picks herself up again in a jiffy after a brief slump, never moping around for too long. Love her.

Exactly, the twists are quite refreshing.

Yes, I found that your dad killed my dad. Yes, my mind is betraying my heart. But I trust you, find the info and even if you don't, come back to me. I'm sorry but that whole conversation, usually takes 5 episodes in another drama to resolve. That's what's very refreshing!

I love that SJN is saving us from the pain of banging our heads into the walls out of frustration of the characters' insipidness. No. Her characters are quick-thinkers, decisive, and not wishy-washy.

SO TRUE!

I was fully prepared for the angst to last minimum one episode but when it got resolved just a minute later, its just awesome. This drama is exactly what it needs to be!

Hurhur the 'not saying anything while live-watching and living in the comments thread' is actually pretty hard. I had to stop myself from putting in any comment cos even an "ARGHHH THAT ENDING" would have been too spoilery although I still found myself going back to the thread right after I watched the episode and watching everyone ELSE squee over it.

Oh my, still can't get over the look in JCW's eyes and his attempt to restrain his emotions as he said "I knew, but I didn't tell you because I was afraid you'd be like this...if this has nothing to do with us why can't you look at me or hug me?"

I'LL HUG YOU. I VOLUNTEER.

JCW's use of his eyes and subtle body language to express what he feels is just at an abnormally superb level already at his age!

I swear that if anyone DARES to HURT Jung Hoo again physically or emotionally, I'm gonna........ xxxxx their necks! Growl! That is how powerful JCW's performance is!

That entire sequence is HURTS-SO-GOOD category.

This writer really doesnt play fair! Its either TOO CUTE or TOO HOT or HURTS SO GOOD.

My heart cannot take this pendulum swing any longer!

His hugs! Best.Hugger.Ever. He would make a fortune if he charged per hug with repeat buyers! But man, oh man... the look on his face when he knew something was wrong, and when he figured it out, there was nothing he could do about it as his fears were realized. My God. How do they keep making each episodes amazing!?!

Ugh, a hell of a ride for this episode! And that ending!

I'm so torn with that ending. That scene they had at Coffee Bay feels so much like a good-bye scene, or perhaps I'm just reeling from that ending and likely losing my sanity cause I can't (but have to -_-") wait for next week!

I also feel like they'll be doing a "time skip". For example, Jung Hoo will be gone for a while, if not years, then he comes back to possibly single mom Yeong Shin -- BAHA I'M AT MY WITS END. K-dramas have traumatized me too much, I just hope they don't pull that s**t, I hate it :[ (unless of course they pull it off really well)

P.S. She better not go back on her word and think of him as a monster! You're a reporter, look for you evidences first

I'm beginning to have a lot of respect for actors under NAMOOACTORS, where Yoo Ji Tae and Ji Sung belongs. These are really great actors with fabulous talents!!

Yes, fingers crossed for MH!

Funnily though, now I'm swinging back the other way. I think that Writer Song has been pulling those heartstrings with great delicacy and deftness, and MH's death would be overkill (especially when you consider City Hunter).

It would also fly in the face of Teacher's sacrifice, when he said that he would protect those "kids", those baby bears - I presume he also included MH in that. The circle of the 5 friends was broken, but the cycle of Healing needs all 3 kids to be complete.

No, I'm not that worried for MH or our OTP. But the others... I wonder if Song Ji Na has a record for high body count finales?

OK, I'm in seriously stressed out state now. And I have to go out soon so I don't have time to de-stress slowly in this thread..... *heart still palpitating, tummy in knots*

But, let me look on the bright side.

-Myung Hee has joined Team Healer already.

- Despite the shock that brought on more than one panic attack, YS is able to pull herself together and use her head. She is able to recover and ask Moon Ho questions and to be on hand to help if necessary.

- Young Shin is also more likely to believe in JH's goodness than she is to believe he is a killer. Since she has done this already and has shown herself as consistent, I believe it will the same again. (Maybe she has to go through a couple more panic attacks? LOL!)

- JH was super cool when he fought off those other goons while on the phone with YS. Did not miss a beat at first :D

QUESTION: Location trackker bug. There was a bug that JH placed on the goon's own car. Was this a bug from Elder's goons or Moon Shik's? I think now MS and Elder are not working tog. on this.

Were there 2 bugs on Park Dong Cheol?

There was another bug that another set of goons (Elder?) slipped into Park Dong Cheol's pocket? Did he know about it?

Another one in the phone so that he could put it on to inform MS's goons where he was.

But in the end... which goons killed him? LOL!!!

HELP!!!

The first bug in the guys pocket healer took out and stick on the tyre of a black car. That's how they couldn't trace them to the church.

They found out their location was because the old cop turned on his mobile when healer was interrogating him

@azack77

That just hit me too, now that you've mentioned it. :-(

Whatever. I just hope she has a record of MS' phone call and safely stashed somewhere - that convo can really save JH, putting the blame on MS instead. For the police and also for YS, which I really hope to be unnecessary.

@Growingbeautifully

If I may:-
- Goons - Although the goons were not from Doble SS, they were still working under MS'order. Remember MS' phone convo tracked by MHee? The manager clearly asked for MS' priority if the situation requires it - to get JH OR to make sure that the tape doesn't get out? MS' answer was to make sure the tape's existence remains a secret.

- Bug - One bug was placed on Park Dong Cheol and the other bug was placed by JH on the goons' car. Hacker Ahjumma then hacked into the goons' tracking system and made them follow their own tail. That's why she broke into that "I'm the best" song.

As for the phone tracking, it was Park himself who switched on the phone to enable himself to be tracked as he meets JH. His plan was for the goons to come to him so that both JH and the goons (read MS) will be outbidding the other for the tape.

That's my take. Correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

Hi patinalee

I feel that you are closer than I am to understanding this .... But walk with me on the sequence of the tracker bug... Also are we dealing with just 1 set of goons from Moon Shik?

1) JH exited the bar? after fighting 2 goons as another bunch of goons entered. He planted a tracker on their car. I thought that tracker bug was his own and he told Ahjumma to see where it went. He had not met Park yet so it cannot be Park's bug.

2) Goons slip a tracker bug into Park's pocket. He is unaware. But why bother unless we have 2 groups ie Elder's group planted the tracker and MS's group approached Park earlier and gave him the phone and a promise of money/lottery stall, whatever.

3) Why is there both a phone tracker and a tracker bug on Park? ... We see JH grab Park and they end up in a cathedral. At this stage is that bug still on him or did it end up stuck to a car? When and how did that happen?

4) Park switches on the phone. Moon Shik's goons come. Another car comes and a lone goon gets out of it with a pipe and kills Park. Who does the lone goon belong to? MS or Elder?

Thus my confusion!!!!

Required fields are marked *

OK I'm going to take a stab at deconflicting this.

I'm assuming all the goons belong to Moon Shik (until otherwise revealed...cos you're right, some could belong to Elder).

1) Yes, the tracker bug is his own and yes he put it on their van.

2) Yes, goons slip a tracker bus into Park's pocket - but I think they also approached him with the promise of money to turn on his phone and allow them to track him should he meet up with JH and their original plan of tracking him via bug doesn't work (I'm seriously suspending disbelief here).

3) I think Ahjumma basically disabled the tracking device on Park and rerouted it to her own bug that JH had earlier placed on the goons' car, which explains why the goons all ended up back at their own vehicle when they were tracking the movement.

4) See point above where I assume all goons belong to Moon Shik LOL

Not sure whether that's the entire reality (this writer sometimes unpeels layers in stages, so we don't get the full picture until sometime later, like the characters) but I THINK that's what went down.

Thanks @ Rainerust! This sounds entirely plausible and can explain it all better minus a plot hole or so. :)

0

I also got confused with the so many bugs. Lol!

But from what I understand, yup...after Jung Hoo was lead as a trap to the bar to look for Park Dong Chul the hide after the fight, he planted a bug on their car when he saw a few more goons came. Then we see a goons spotting Jung Hoo on stroll then plant bug on Park Dong Chul's jacket. Goons tried to follow it but ahjumma hacked on their tracking system that lead them to the very same bug that Jung Hoo put on their own car so Jung Hoo was able to dragged and interrogate Dong Chul to the church hence Ahjumma hummed to "I'm the Best" hahaha. But as a trap as it was, there was another bug on Dong Chul's phone as he's been cooperating from the very beginning to capture Jung Hoo in exchange for money/lottery outlet as per MS' plan to surrender him to the police but of course that's a bluff and they killed him. Ack. I commend the show for finally having the hang of their fighting scenes. It finally got better just when we're about to end.

@Growingbeautifully

I mostly agree with Rainerust here, while adding these: -

1. Park switched on his phone while he was in the church with JH about the time just after JH offered him money for the tape. He didn’t know the goons had planted a tracking bug on him which Ahjumma has disabled. He wanted to be tracked, to draw the goons towards him to start a price war for the tapes between JH and MS, the goons’ master. There was also the offer of a job, insurance, etc for him from MS’ side. He was trying to play his cards the best way he can. The moment he was tracked, the goons that were already on the ground started converging on him, coming into the church not long after.

2. As soon as Park was tracked, Manager Ahn called MS for his priorities in a worst case scenario and for MS, the priority was to keep existence of the tape a secret from the world. At that moment, the goons on the ground were already converging on the church if not already fighting with JH. Ahn therefore needed to send another carload of goons to the scene, with the proper equipment and set of instructions. Thus although we see two sets of goons arriving at different times on the scene, they were serving the same master, MS.

My thoughts and I stand to be corrected. :-)

Thanks @ patinalee and @ gina

I find it amazing that Ahjumma was able to hack into a bug that neither JH nor Park knew was in his pocket, but nevermind :) Let's take it that she has a handle on MS's new goon's tracking system.

But now there still remains 2 sets of instructions. 1 from MS says get the tape as priority. But another goon came with instructions to kill Park. Ahn is reporting to 2 bosses.

Therefore in all probability, Elder is playing his own game and MS is going to be played as well. I don't know whether to feel sorry for him or not, especially now when I find him increasingly repulsive. Sad... :)

0

@ GB Actually I think Ahjumma and JH guessed he was going to be tracked with a bug, and they tried to forestall that with the hack...but they probably didn't realise he was going to turn on his phone to ALLOW himself to be tracked (maybe because they thought he wouldn't be that stupid since these folks are playing for keeps and would likely take him out to ensure the evidence is kept buried). That's my guess.

@ patinalee I'm not sure about the price war - I thought I saw JH offer him twice the price that the goons / MS offered for the evidence...and yet he kept trying to 'hold' JH there so, clearly just the money wasn't sufficient. Maybe it was the offer of getting his life back on track with a decent job?

0

@ Rainerust

That's an idea! It was to give Jung Hoo to the goons: that was the deal Park had struck. So he wasn't really only interested in what JH would offer, he wanted everything MS offered if he held JH there for him. :)

0

@ Rainerust

Re: "price war" - JH has offered double the price. When the goons know that, they'll offer more for the tape, and the bidding goes on. I meant a price war in that sense - Park is using JH and the offer he's made or will make to get a higher price for the tapes, even if he has decided to take the goons' offer (which includes job and insurance etc) all along. Too bad he didn't know who he was dealing with.

I feel like wanna kill the money grabbing ajusshi myself. Will YS really go down that road to think Healer is a killer? At that moment I was like,"trust your man, girl!"

I love the correlation between the scene where YS cries her heart out on her dad's shoulder, saying:

“Because if I told him I knew, he might just leave. Because I might not see him again, I couldn’t say anything. And I can’t not see him again—I can’t handle that.”

And the scene in the cafe today as YS chased after JH:

And why do I get the feeling, a steamier bed scene is completely on the way?? :P

And in episode 15 bed scene, did you notice the way he moved her back to his side and made sure his arms went around her before tucking in the covers????

I FOUND THAT SO HOTTTTTT. Finding that comfortable position and making sure she is comfortable!!!!!!!!!!!!

0

@Divyrus I don't know if I'm just delusional, but I really do think we'll get another bed scene... *fingers crosses*

Ahhh, that would be adorable. Like a housewarming party for the place YS and JH buys together with all the important (good) people present! That would be adorbs!!

I have another wish, MORE spontaneous kisses please!!

Swoon. That bed scene was super sweet. Did you also notice how he put her arm over his body before completely wrapping her in his?!

0

Hell ! Knew this was coming still it is difficult to watch the pain, uncertainty and hurt between the two.

CYS will realize the truth, if not right away still soon enough. Yesterday's nice and sweet episode was an indication of trouble to come .... I wish CYS meets her mom, she can put her doubts to rest as she has faith that Jung Ho's dad wasn't responsible for the death of her husband.

I wish/hope the mother-daughter pair get to celebrate the B'day together.

It's killing me. I can't see this episode until tomorrow at the earliest. C'mon Drama Fever! You can do better than this. Healer is cracktastic!

I like how this writer, who also wrote Sandglass, keeps referencing 1992 and the military rule that controlled the media. Kim Moon Shik calls it "peace" that needs to be protected from the "bad seeds" who would disrupt it by, presumably, telling the truth. The writer is doing a great job of reminding her audience of the hard won freedoms the media has now, but warning of the danger of losing that unless people remain vigilant; her message is political without being pedantic. Brilliant!

JB, thank you so much for recapping this, and so quickly!

@Saema

I've posted about it before, that mother-daughter reveal. I'd like that MHee meets and gets to know YS' person - loving, bright, spunky, courageous and mostly, happy. I think knowing that YS has been doing well will really take the edge off MHee's guilt regarding her daughter even if it doesn't erase the guilt completely.

It's also good that MHee finds YS' voice pleasant. It indicates that mother and daughter will be comfortable with each other. MHee really needs to be calm and YS close by, when that reveal happens, to be a comfort to her mother and lessen the shock effect of the reveal.

0

While I was watching this episode, I wished that the writer had included more scenes in the beginning of the friends in a more personal manner, with more comedic scenes, so that the pain and the drive to clear the dad's name would be stronger. However, those scenes would also have depended on how good the actors were. I know she attempted this, but it did not really work for me.

Right now, for me, what is of more concern, is what the detective who is relentlessly on Healer's tail, is going to when he discovers that JH is the healer.

I am also torn between JH badass night job, because I almost shallowly want him to continue it just for the sake of being cool, but at the same time, I want him to have a peaceful, mundane like with YS, which is something he wishes for.

There were a number of flashbacks - the driving in the truck & celebrating afterwards, the time in the hospital when Ji-an was born.....

Because the story is about Healer & not about the 5 friends (that part is the setup/background) - I'm OK with it being told through Moon-ho and Teacher's memories rather than being shown it. After all, our protagonists, Healer & Young-shin, do not remember or know about the 5 friends - and as they discover the past through pictures & memories --- its impact of them - that's our story.

The 80's was a dark time for Korea. Under a authoritarian leadership, students and office workers rose to protest for democracy. A lot of students even lost their lives. People were arrested and labeled as communists...sometimes being tortured to give up names.

The way I see it, considering that they ran a pirate broadcasting radio station together during that era...I just assumed that there had to be an incredible amount a trust in each other. There is no way they would've been able to go through all those adventures (like the scene of them escaping detection) unless they were close. Interestingly, Moon Shink appeared to be a coward (he didn't want a photo taken) even back then.

@azfih, KDaddict,

On the contrary, the closeness among the 5 friends had been shown in other flashbacks, such as those recalled by Jung-hoo's mom when she was looking at the box of photos. In these and other flashbacks, we could see the special bond between SJH's dad and Ji-An's dad, and make us (viewers) who are in the know, how ridiculous that trumped up charge of one killing the other is.

It's these kind of shows that show us how outdated the TV industry has become. When do the younger generation watch TV anyway? Everything has become online. Only adults watch TV, which can greatly explain why the ratings are lower for this show, as I am sure it attracts more of a 15- 40 age group rather than older.

TV stations should create websites where they post the episode at the same time that it airs in korea, and see the viewership ratings> Even though I don't understand the language I would signin just to support the actors, actresses and the team!

I agree that the ratings are possibly on the low end despite obvious hype from the fans' end because of the medium used to watch the show....

I'm thinking that people below 30 are less likely to switch on the TV at a fixed time to watch a show......

Many will watch it online or from another streaming site.

It's time for the drama industry to change how they calculate ratings...

Right?!? There's a ridiculous amount of ads on DF. Too many I tell you.

I have thought the same SO many times!

I would gladly pay a nice amount of money for my Kdrama fix! Being in India, I dont have any single chance to see any shows in any language legally!

And I want to tell, dont worry much azfih, its not always about ratings. But Korea is a very strange place. Its like I always feel 90% of people are pointed to the same side just cuz everyone are there.

Still getting this much attention and fanbase for a drama is not easy feat. Am just glad JCW and all other actors would be able to add this to their resume proudly!

Young-shin just became my new favorite heroine in dramaverse! I love her. Don't mess up in the next episode, girl. I like Park Minyoung but I love her acting in the cafe scene.
So history is repeating itself? It's a good thing Jung-hoo has people around him who will help him clear his name unlike his father. Go Scooby Gang!
On a lighter note, I was a bit disappointed they didn't show much of YS's dads's reaction after she and JH kissed. :D

Thank you for the recap JB! I mus watch Story of a Man after Healer ends.

Only four episodes left...I am dreading the day Healer finishes. I am not sure if I will ever find another drama that would captivate me as much as Healer has.

I can only hope that JCW will always take on projects that would showcase his acting ability. He's got me as a fan for life, I will be following his career and supporting him all the way.

I am sorry if I sound a bit down, because I am. Episode 16 has really got me down. I've invested so much in SJH that I just can't stand to see him suffer. In the scene where he confronts CYS about her reluctance to look at him or to hug him back, my heart just went to pieces. JCW has really mastered the art of expressing his feelings though his eyes and with his body language. I just felt everything he was feeling.

Man, I am just praying to dramagod for a happy ending because I don't think I can handle anything less. Definitely don't want an ambiguous ending either...

Even a sad ending is okay, so long as it's certain - like LBH's character at the end of IRIS. :-(

IDK. I think Daddy Cha may just let it slide this time around. It was after JH came to the cafe that YS sprang back to life. The last time Dad saw her in her room, YS was under the bed, sad and depressed, out of her mind, refusing to take calls. JH's coming changed all that. And it was YS that hugged him!! That's when Dad and Ahjussi dropped their utensils! :-D

So, let it slide Dad? :-D

I noticed that the editing has gotten quite sloppy the past few episodes. In eps 15/16, I spotted some inconsistent cuts which were thankfully not very noticeable. However, in ep 9, idk if any of you noticed but they overlooked a shot in which the camera clearly caught one of the reflectors (around the time YS took off her coat in the presscon).

Not that I'm blaming them. (Editing is no joke. Based from personal experience as a student undertaking filmmaking, it takes me roughly 2-3 days to edit a mere 10-20 minute short film). The heavy pressure because of the liveshoot system must really be taking its toll on the entire crew, not to mention the poor editors who are probably only given less than a day to finish an hour-long episode, leaving them with no room for fleshing out.

Anyway, as long as the overall quality of the show doesn't waver (meaning, the plot, acting and execution over anything else) then you will hear no major gripes from me. I wish the cast and crew good health and luck all towards the end of the show and even after that. Healer team fighting! :)

Word.

And as long as they ensure the cast and crew's safety. This is a show with quite a bit of action scenes so I don't want the live shoot system to lead to some slacking in the safety department.

0

Required fields are marked *

Lol I kind of have gripes with some of the lighting in the scenes. Realistic but hard on the viewers' sight. And yeah, I agree some of the editing has slipped. Small plot holes are also appearing with more frequency in the drama, but I'm suspending disbelief like mad to focus on the main story. Luckily, as you said, the writing is still fairly tight, the character development is still spot on and I love how I can relate to all the scenes. With only 4 more episodes (2 more weeks) I'm hoping the team can hold on til the end and yeah that everyone stays safe and healthy!

Required fields are marked *

@ Divy yeah, but I must say I'm still impressed with the quality of the show so far, and it's been doing well despite the live-shoot stress...just hoping it can keep up the quality as it reaches the end of the line! This is one of the few times where I've reached Ep 16 of a drama and I feel like there's still so much story left, enough for the next 4 episodes without the need for any kind of filler in between. Usually I'm at Episode 16 and I'm like, ehhhh I think it only needs two more episodes.

@Rainrust

True that. There is still so much of ground to cover. I mean we still have no idea what happened in 1992!
One is the accident which was falsified, another the nightmares Moon Ho keeps having regarding to Young Shin and third, Young Shin's trauma after getting lost.

And am pretty sure the third one is gonna be resolved next episode, it cant be without reason that the murder weapon was the steel rod. And why do I feel , the guy who killed Dong Chul is Young Shin's childhood attacker????

Or am I imagining too much?

0

@ Divyrus

There's also the question of how MHee ended up hospitalised with her neck in braces.

Park's killer = YS' childhood attacker? Wow. THAT came out of the blue! :-D

0

@patinalee

Yeah I know, even while I rewatched again, the way the camera crossed his face for a instant and the murder weapon being the rod, it simply cant be a coincidence!

Or maybe it is and I have just become delusional!!! :P

"...and get Jung-hoo a good lawyer so he can turn himself in and be reintroduced to society."

I don't know if it's just prejudice, but I can barely countenance - and I mean in this case, watch closely - any scene with him in it now!!! :)

Required fields are marked *

Yes, GB. I think it's a sure sign of an actor's ability when a character the actor plays can evoke such a reaction of loathing in the viewer. You just feel like reaching into the screen and wringing his neck.

It's easier to see whether an actor's good or not when they play bad/evil characters - you'd hate the guts of that character. It's not the same if they play a good/nice character though - you may like the character for reasons other than the actor's acting ability - good looks, nice voice, good chemistry etc.

One of my favorite things about our OTP is that they actually talk to each other and lean on each other when they are down. I know. Rare.

I'm especially reminded of that fact having just re-watched the scene where YS calls JH and tells him about her recent discoveries and then how he made sure to go check up on her personally. And of course, the bedroom & cafe scenes as well.

how about a mother-daughter team that defends JH to the last? that would be awesome, i want to see that. even if i don't want to see JH caught...

oh, that moment when he stepped away from YS, after the dad/dad dilemma came up, with those hurt and confused eyes... give him another east pick, please!!! i volunteer.

i wish dad and ahjussi got more screen time, JH is going to get the 12 degrees when they manage to make him stay put for a second, lol. and i wonder why YS didn't get scolded :D

it just hit me - the heroine's name is ji-ahn, an anagram of the writer's name of ji-nah. lol. look who's wishfully thinking of a healer of her own.

that would be so bittersweet...

remember how the new husband seemed to be sorry mom had left JH to marry him instead, and yet, in recent times, mom says "that man would find any excuse to drink". i wonder if that's why she never included JH back in her new family? but if the man was a drunk, why marry him in the first place?

she seems to have a maybe-disfunctional family to go with her anti-social first son, so maybe introducing the gf to the family better not be in the cards. but i want myung-hee to see and approve of them together. oh and awesome YS's foster dad, too. he definitely needs more screen time... @shelly

I have no doubt whatsoever that MHee will approve of the YS/JH relationship.

MHee loves JH. The way she held his face in her hands, eyes brimming with tears, voice choked, the first time they met in her house. Her admiration for his courage in asking the story of his father's and Gil Han's deaths when it could just be buried. Her happiness in being told JH's reason for asking is because he now has a girl he likes and need to know his family story. She was so happy that MHee called out to her (believed) dead daughter to tell her that JH has a girl now. MHee is so happy for JH.

And as much as she loves JH, MHee loves her daughter even more. The daughter that remains in her thoughts even after 22 years of believed death. She would no doubt want her daughter to be happy, and if that means for YS to be with JH, MHee would no doubt approve, and be even happier that the two young playmates have found their way back to the adult each other.

The other reason the comments are slow (I'm guessing) is that the feels are different. Awesome recap, thankee so much DramaBean Queens!!

Such an awesome ep on so many levels; all y'all squeeers have already very eloquently said as much.

Wanted to point out first that YJT is in my opinion one of the smoothest, most effortless actors I have ever seen. Like....the closest western equivalent I can think of would be Denzel Washington - a phenomonal talent. Miss him. YJT is So so very good that I just feel priveleged to watch his screen time. And trust me, I am a picky, picky viewer!! I rip everything to shreds, analyze it, put it back together and decide if I like it. Me likey YJT Very Very much. I hope he does more dramas, since I don't have access to K films. :-( anyway.....MoonHo's convo with MyungHee- his first love and the one he cherishes above all others- his heart is breaking for her loss and that Jian is SOOO close...his voice breaks, his eyes mist, ...the timing, the sublety, the pacing of that convo...something about it made it made my icy heart just ache. Beautiful!!!

I totally agree with whoever posted about the need for mature actors to be in supporting roles around "the hot new it factors" in a production like this that has so much subtle layering. JCW is a very hard worker and super talented. I think watching someone like YJT work must be an amazing mentoring process, and I am thrilled for him that he can work and learn alongside such an experienced talent.

There have been 2 scenes I kinda wished they had had more time to refine that didnt translate well for JCW - a bit stagey and overdone BUT my Gosh...out of 16 episodes, that is just phenomenal with all the boy has going on - esp frankly between stage and screen!!! ( I am being super picky here as a way to offset the incessant Squeeeee factor I can't seem to get a handle on. Sigh!!!!)

I'm off to go analyze Hugs. Hugs Hugs and More Hugs....Hugs are the new Hands. LOL.

Totally, absolutely agree about YJT - just WOW. I am going to seek out his movies. There must be a way to find them!

You should watch Oldboy. It's a masterpiece. :)

I keep seeing that title and I know they did an American remake which looked too icky for my taste. I've read the summary, so I have an idea of the storyline. My concern: Is the original with YJT too explicit?

One thing that always makes me laugh is when YJT is in the kitchen. He is so tall that at first glance it looks like the sink height is up to his knees. (It's mid thigh upon closer inspection.)

would anyone like share, who in your bias list is replaced bt JCW????

For me it is Song Jong Ki (sorry :( )

Now the list is
1. Lee Jin Wook (Nine, Three Muskateers)
2. Ji Chang Wook (Healer)
3. Song Jong Ki (Innocent Guy, SKKS)

Now I m totally "wooked" to two Wooks ;)

I was thinking of who I was biased towards ...

1. Lee Sang Yoon (and his adorable dimples)
2. Jin Yi Han (eyes and voice that melts hearts)
3. Go Soo

Now Ji Chang Wook is on top and the others can be in any order. Who cares since JCW is number 1!

Bias list? What bias list? :D

Well, I think I HAD a bias list, until Ji Chang Wook came into my life and ruined everything, that is. Now I can't even remember who I liked before him. Lol.

@Omomo

*HIGH 5*

I was trying to come up with a list and then no one was in my brain except JCW :D

During city hunter days it was Lee Min Ho, but faith faltered a little bit and then Heirs totally put me off!!!!
Am mad at LMH now until he does a proper role again!!
