Healer: Episode 14

Oof. It’s a wrenching episode, taking us on a roller coaster ride of wild emotional ups and downs. Our hero has to grapple with some weighty, nearly unbearable, burdens, struggling to make sense out of the insensible. Thankfully for him, he isn’t as alone in the world as he thinks he is—and thankfully for us, roller coasters have upswings to counter the violent downs. Up, up, and away!

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Teacher dies. Jung-hoo arrives at the station in time to see his body being wheeled out to an ambulance, and his knee-jerk reaction is to charge at the scene furiously.

Dae-yong and several buddies are thankfully on hand to hold him back, though it’s a struggle. He flings them aside a few times, but they manage to prevent him from being spotted and drag him out of sight. It’s a good thing, too, because Detective Yoon just misses spotting Jung-hoo, keeping Healer undetected for the time being.

Dae-yong blocks Jung-hoo’s path to the car, and Jung-hoo slumps down against it, suddenly weakened. He reels, physically winded.

Then he gets in the car anyway, shoving Dae-yong aside, and drives off. Gah, not in that condition!

Min-ja is just as devastated by the news, and answers Dae-yong’s call with a heavy heart. But she pulls herself together to address the problem of their rogue Healer. So she puts in a phone call to Moon-ho, not bothering to introduce herself; she doesn’t need to, because the second she drops Teacher’s name, Moon-ho’s all ears.

Jung-hoo storms into the hospital with a single-minded goal, and his rage provides a tunnel vision that makes him think nothing of beating down the poor doctors who get in his way. He gets to the morgue efficiently—but once there, he hesitates, trembling in trepidation.

As soon as Moon-ho arrives at the hospital, Detective Yoon recognizes him and stops him to ask a few questions. Moon-ho’s got bigger concerns right now, but he can’t just shake off the curious cop.

Jung-hoo enters the exam room and has difficulty approaching the body, his hands shaking as he draws back the sheet. One look at Teacher’s face is all he needs, and the tears spring forth immediately, even as he says, “It’s not true, right? I remember how you played a trick on me last time just like this, you know. So get up. Teacher.”

He asks pleadingly, but reality is slowly setting in. Slowly, Jung-hoo sinks to the ground in a crouch.

Detective Yoon leads Moon-ho down to the morgue, and along the way they encounter the unconscious orderly in the hallway. While the detective calls for help, Moon-ho hurries forward to the morgue ahead of him—but when he arrives, the exam room is empty.

Moon-ho moves to draw the sheet over Teacher’s head, but pauses—this must be the first time in over a decade that he’s seen his hyung’s face. He wells up with tears.

When the detective asks how he knows Teacher, Moon-ho replies that this man was like family to him. Tears dripping down his face, Moon-ho leans over the body and promises, “Hyung, I’ll take care of this now.”

His reaction to the supposed Healer’s death naturally makes the detective wonder, and I’m hoping this doesn’t signal complications for Moon-ho… even though it totally will, right? Detective Yoon calls for reinforcements to beef up his investigation, and anticipates that they’ll have “guests” dropping in to get Teacher’s statement. They’ll have to set a trap.

As Jung-hoo drives off, he thinks back to earlier days with Teacher, such as the time he’d proudly presented Jung-hoo with home-cooked birthday soup (which did not go well). Then there was the time Jung-hoo had presented Teacher with his high school equivalency certificate and “won” a promised briefcase from the Teacher (which was full of porn, HA).

A car overtakes him on the road, then screeches to a halt in front of him, forcing Jung-hoo to stop. Jung-hoo tries to drive around it, but Moon-ho literally puts himself in front of the car, then grabs to hold Jung-hoo back while explaining that a woman called to tell him he’d be coming this way. And that he’d be out to kill.

Moon-ho blocks his path with his body and pleads, “Don’t do it! Don’t! You’d become a murderer because of bastards like that? Why?!” Moon-ho continues to try to stop Jung-hoo, who keeps knocking him aside, not giving up even after receiving several hard blows. Jung-hoo isn’t so far gone that he’ll seriously hurt Moon-ho, though, and stops himself from delivering a severe punch. Moon-ho gasps out that his teacher wouldn’t have wanted him to do this.

Jung-hoo asks in frustration what he has to do, and Moon-ho’s promise to figure something out isn’t good enough—he needs something now. He bursts out that he’s like this because there’s nothing he can do, so he demands that Moon-ho tell him something.

Moon-ho yells back that he’s felt this way for the past twenty years, fighting the frustration of being unable to do anything. Oof, you know, that is a very good point.

“So just give me a little time,” Moon-ho asks. “I’ll find a way.”

But now Jung-hoo turns the blame inward: “I called Teacher here. He didn’t want to come, but I called him. I made him talk about things he didn’t want to talk about, and got angry when he did. And because I was angry, even though he was here for the first time in eight years, we didn’t eat a single meal together. But that damned old man…”

Jung-hoo’s really struggling, and Moon-ho tells him to go ahead and cry. Instead, Jung-hoo bellows his frustration, then gets back in his car. Moon-ho blocks his car door and swears to take down every single evildoer and make them pay for their crimes, asking Jung-hoo to trust him.

Jung-hoo asks, “How? Aside from stopping me, what can you do?” Moon-ho doesn’t have an answer, and he finally steps back. Jung-hoo drives off.

Moon-shik receives reporters at home for an interview, now that he’s a mayoral candidate, and Myung-hee keeps up appearances as the loving wife in front of the cameras. But her face is stony when she listens to Moon-shik giving his interview, as he laughs how it’s both his strength and weakness that he’s exactly the same on the inside and outside: “I can’t hide a thing!”

Young-shin is puzzled when she can’t get a hold of Bong-soo. The boys were at her place all night working, and he supposedly only stepped out to go running, but never returned. Reporter Yeo points out that Bong-soo has a habit of running away in fear at nighttime or at dawn, and speculates that he must’ve seen something that scared him off… insinuating that Young-shin spooked him with her behavior, ha.

He and Editor Jang look at her expectantly for an explanation of what she did to run him off, but she doesn’t have to give one since Moon-ho arrives to explain Bong-soo being absent today.

Young-shin proposes to Moon-ho that they interview Moon-shik, saying that she’d like to tell him directly that they find his past shady so they can get his response to it. The problem is that he might decline a request for interview, so she asks Moon-ho to pull some strings, since he’s his brother.

“From today, he isn’t,” Moon-ho replies, startling her. “I’ve decided that Kim Moon-shik and I are not brothers. Not anymore.”

Despite the surprise, Young-shin doesn’t ask questions, saying merely that she’ll try getting the interview on her own. She admits to a particular interest in the wife, having read about how amazingly close the spouses’ relationship is. She allows that Moon-ho knows his brother and must have good reason to consider him unfit for office—but perhaps a man who is so devoted toward one woman all his life isn’t all bad. At the very least, she’d like to meet the wife and draw her own conclusions. Moon-ho agrees to think about it, which she takes as a positive sign.

She asks if he talked to Bong-soo, and he just says that he must be out with a cold. Young-shin starts texting Bong-soo, but deletes each attempt. First she asks “Bong-soo-ya” if he’s sick, and then she asks more formally, “What is your name?” Finally she sets the phone aside, not texting after all.

At her desk, Min-ja sets a shot of soju before a photograph of Teacher and asks him to wish her luck—she’s about to resurrect some long-dormant superpowers. Then she gets to business, unleashing her full hacker skills on her keyboard, which soon goes detected by the police department. Detective Yoon races to his terminal to get in on the action, recognizing the hacking pattern, a look of gleeful anticipation on his face as he counters.

Flashback: Min-ja is the lead cop on a stakeout, with a young Detective Yoon weathering the brunt of her rebukes as she outlines the importance of the case they’re working on. They have to wait for a warrant to be issued before charging in, but until then they have to make sure their targets don’t catch wind and delete their computer files.

While they’re waiting, Min-ja takes a call with her irate husband, who screams, “You call yourself a mother?!” It’s because she won’t leave the stakeout, although Detective Yoon overhears and urges her to go, because her four-year-old is in the hospital after yet another surgery. Just then the warrant is issued, and Min-ja orders her team into action, choosing work again.

In the present, Detective Yoon springs the trap. But Min-ja outmaneuvers him, freezing the system while she downloads the files she needs.

This hack brings back more painful memories, and the next flashback shows her husband accusing her of not being a mother, because she wasn’t there when her child died. Making things even worse, her police boss issues orders from above to cover up the case and delete those hard-earned files after all.

Well, it’s no wonder she quit the force after that. Ajumma raises a sardonic toast to Teacher and drinks.

She hacks into the Healer pad to tell Jung-hoo that she got Teacher’s recorded statement, which sounds to her like a message meant for Jung-hoo. Jung-hoo watches Teacher’s video, where Teacher says that he never gave too much thought to the jobs he took on, but ought to have. If he had, those thoughts could’ve been his signboard, directing him where to go when he felt lost, warning him of cliffs or construction ahead, or to turn around.

When asked whether he murdered Go Sung-chul on commission, Teacher replies that he doesn’t accept those jobs:

Teacher: “If a person kills another person, they become inhuman. You should die a person. That way, you can reunite with those people you want to see again, those who left before you. There’s one thing I regret: I should have quit from the start.”

That’s when Teacher turns away from the detective and faces the camera instead: “Give it up. Go live with the woman you love, raising two kids, a dog, two cats, a few goldfish. I should have.”

Shaken and confused, Jung-hoo can only ask in a small lost voice, “Why?”

Ajumma advises Jung-hoo to honor Teacher’s dying wishes, and offers to make him a new identity, or to solidify Bong-soo’s. But Jung-hoo says heavily, “It’s too late. She already knows everything. Who I am.”

Then he corrects himself: “No, not everything. She doesn’t know that being with me will bring her pain. That it might even kill her.” He ignores ajumma’s barrage of questions, saying that there’s nothing he can do but sleep.

So he sets out unplugging all his computers, pulls the battery out of his phone, removes his watch and ring, and heads for bed. Checking out of life for the time being.

Moon-ho drops by the ABS station, and although his former boss Min-jae is still peeved at him for the press conference stunt, she agrees to a chat. Moon-ho apologizes for putting her in a bad position, then explains how a close hyung recently died, and that he thinks he knows who killed him. Then there’s another guy who used to be close to him in childhood, who has been out of touch for three days.

Min-jae’s understandably frosty with him and tells him impatiently to get to the point. Moon-ho’s answer is a bit surprising—that she is the only name saved in his phone as a friend, and today he’s here to talk to a friend. “Because I have nobody to talk to.”

Min-jae notes that despite Moon-ho’s image as a fearless figure, she knows he’s actually the opposite: “You only ever fight when you won’t get hurt. You run away when you meet someone frightening, using an appropriate excuse.” She tells him it’s nothing to be ashamed of, however, “Since we’re all like that.”

Young-shin and Jong-soo get busy working on the Moon-shik story, and in between interviews she tries to track down Bong-soo at home using his resumé address, which turns out to be nonexistent. She sends him messages chiding him for skipping work when they’re short-staffed, her voicemails going from concerned to stern to threatening, warning that he’s missed his forgiveness window.

But by the fifth day, her voice is scared as she sits in the dark, asking, “Did I… do something wrong? Is it because I said I would wait that you can’t come? Should I have said I wouldn’t wait… that you shouldn’t worry? Should I cancel what I said?”

ABS schedules a talk with Moon-shik as a live broadcast, and Moon-ho decides to use that as Someday’s next broadcast. As soon as Moon-shik answers a question on air, within the next ten minutes, Someday will counter that answer.

Of course, that requires them to know what questions will be asked. But Moon-ho knows his brother will only answer questions that have been prepped in advance, and turns to his spy, asking if he’d like to be a double agent. Jong-soo would NOT, thank you very much, but really, there’s no refusing. He nervously agrees.

Moon-ho finds Young-shin still huddled in the dark, and she jumps up guiltily. He asks for her phone, and she assumes she’s in trouble and promises not to make any more personal calls on the job, only to have him punch in a number—it’s Myung-hee’s. He gives permission to use his name in asking for an interview, and Young-shin excitedly hurries off to make the call.

At home, Myung-hee heads into her husband’s empty office and tries opening his desk drawers. They’re locked shut, to her disappointment—but she catches a glimpse of something mounted to the underside of the desk. A button.

She presses it, and bookshelves slide open to reveal the secret space behind it, where the hidden TV screens are mounted. That’s when she gets Young-shin’s call, and more surprising than her request is the news that Moon-ho is her boss at Someday—all this while, she thought he was still at the broadcast station. Wow, she has really been kept cut off from the world.

Myung-hee’s also surprised that Moon-ho would have given her number to a reporter, as he knows that she doesn’t meet people. But she likes the sound of Young-shin’s voice and asks for time to consider, and Young-shin thanks her enthusiastically.

Min-ja sends Dae-yong on the rounds to track down all of Jung-hoo’s vehicles, trying to pinpoint his whereabouts. But everything looks untouched, and Min-ja deduces that this means Jung-hoo isn’t moving at all, which suggests he’s holed himself up at home. Dae-yong offers to go in person, but Min-ja says that even if she showed up there, she couldn’t get inside without Jung-hoo’s permission.

Next thing you know, ajumma charges into the Chae family cafe (yesssssssss) like she owns the place, ordering ajusshi to open half an hour early and demanding a female server. Haha. I love how she doesn’t explain a thing, and just lets them think she’s a weirdo.

Min-ja imperiously motions Young-shin aside to take her order, and Young-shin complies, despite her bafflement. Once Young-shin sits down, ajumma asks if she recognizes her voice, and repeats her words from her previous call to jog her memory.

Young-shin gasps upon recognition, suddenly alert and pelting her with questions. She says that Bong-soo’s been unreachable for days, her worry obvious.

Ajumma asks for her phone and links it to a device, fiddling with it as she tells her that Bong-soo’s been immobile for six days, probably not eating. She’s certain he won’t let her in, which leaves one option: to force him to open the door himself.

Understanding what she’s getting at, Young-shin asks tearfully, “Is he… okay? Is he not okay?” (I notice she’s now calling him “that person”—her way of referring to the Healer—instead of Bong-soo.) She grabs ajumma’s hand and begs her to tell her where to find him.

Ajumma notes Young-shin’s vehement reaction and replies, “I had to see your eyes.” Then she hands her back the phone, all the information there at her fingertips.

Young-shin follows the directions to Jung-hoo’s building, her lock-picking skills coming in handy in getting past the first locked door. She heads up the elevator, through the dilapidated warehouse floor, up some crumbling stairs, and to a seeming dead end. There’s nowhere to go from here, but the signal on her phone indicates that this is where she should be.

So Young-shin starts tapping on the walls and calling out for Bong-soo. Getting no response, she pulls out her tools and finds a stethoscope, using it to listen through the wall… and then she hears something click. A sign dangling on the opposite wall moves, and when she moves it again, the wall springs open.

Cautiously, she steps inside the inner lair—and there he is, in bed, looking half-dead.

Young-shin races to his side, and as she reaches to call for an ambulance, Jung-hoo’s eyes slowly open. She tells him gently, “Bong-soo-ya, I’m here.”

He sighs, “Daebak.” Which, all things considered, is hilarious. He reaches his hand out to touch her face, wondering at this dream. He murmurs that he’s cold, and at that she climbs in bed with him and cradles his head in her arms. It’s incredibly sweet. And as she holds him close, he snuggles into her side.

Some time later, he wakes up, alone in bed. Young-shin comes up holding a ladle (and are those his clothes she’s wearing?), holding it out for him to taste.

He struggles to get up, not at all happy to see her. She disregards his displeasure and informs him that she’s put in a personal day at work and intends to stay till tomorrow, and that he’ll eat her cooking whether he likes it or not.

He tells her wearily that this is no place for her, and that she should leave: “Forget this place, and don’t come back.”

His demeanor is cold and uninviting, and Young-shin looks at him intently and asks if this is the real him. Bong-soo didn’t talk like that, “But you’re a little scary.” She informs him that it’s dark and late, so she’ll leave tomorrow if he wants.

Ignoring his surliness, Young-shin sets him up comfortably and presents him with dinner. His mood darkens further as he grabs Young-shin’s things, thrusting them at her and pushing her toward the exit.

She whirls out of reach, refusing to leave, and he’s frankly too weak to do much else. Staggering closer, he asks in exasperation, “Why do you have so little fear?”

She replies, “I’m not afraid of you.” He points out that he’s hiding more from her than she could even guess, and she answers, “I don’t care.” He fires back, “Are you an idiot?”

“Don’t send me away,” she says. “If you send me away, you’ll cry forever.”

He says bleakly, “I could get you hurt.” She shakes her head, full of certainty: “No, you won’t get me hurt. Never.”

He struggles with himself, then grabs her wrist to drag her out. But she stops him, turning him toward her and pulling him into a hug. “Don’t send me away,” she asks again.

Jung-hoo’s face crumples in tears, and then he buries his face in her neck and grabs tight.

She holds him like that for a long moment, and then pulls back to wipe his tears from his face. She kisses him.

COMMENTS

So many things to write about, and they’re not even about that kiss! (Although, eeee, that kiss!)

I was really happy with where this episode took Moon-ho—even as far as yesterday I wasn’t sure what direction he would ultimately take, but today solidified his place standing alongside the Healer. I know he’d declared his intention to work together in the last episode, but it took seeing his old hyung cold and dead on that slab to finally cut the cord, and to realize that his brother had in fact crossed the line fully, that he couldn’t spare him from justice. I don’t think he was necessarily waiting for his brother to redeem himself, but he had enough hope that he wasn’t so far gone.

So now that he knows Moon-shik would (and has) killed, he’s finally ready to take the stand he’s been waffling on taking for the past twenty years. Moon-ho really is the linchpin in this entire story, because even now he possesses more information than anybody else, and it isn’t until he makes the decision that our mother-daughter reunion can start on its path. I suppose if he had had his brother’s ambition his kind of masterminding might be an ominous thing, but as Min-jae rightly points out, Moon-ho is actually rather timid. Good-intentioned, but lacking the courage to fight the big fight.

I guess that’s why he needs Healer and Young-shin on his team to see through the final takedown of the Elder. And while it sucks to have Jung-hoo so shaken by the loss of Teacher, it’s the perfect narrative catalyst to bring them together—because till now, they’ve shared the general stance of being anti-Moon-shik, but differed in their personal motivations. Jung-hoo doesn’t care about the Elder beyond what he does to people he loves, so he isn’t swayed by Moon-ho’s appeals for greater justice. Now, though, Teacher’s death provides a link, and I’m excited to see how these two work together from here on out. One brotherly bond may be severed, but who says another one can’t be formed? (As for the baddies, we’re still unclear on what exactly the Elder does, but based on what we know thus far, I’m imagining a shadow society of elites who manipulate all aspects of society to benefit themselves—I’m thinking Kishokai of Gaksital, for instance.)

I loved how the show depicted Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing Teacher, which felt real and raw, and bolstered by acting that totally made me cry along with the characters. There was an immediacy to Jung-hoo’s grief that I found powerful, and am so happy to see Ji Chang-wook become this character so wholly.

More than the kiss itself (although again, eeee!), I was moved by Jung-hoo’s reaction to Young-shin’s stubborn insistence on staying with him—the anger, confusion, fear, and eventual acceptance. Most of the time, noble idiocy in dramaland arises when a character pushes someone away “for their own good” in a situation where that angst is unnecessary, hence the idiocy part of the term. But it’s not noble idiocy when the reasons are credible, and it makes perfect sense that Jung-hoo’s reaction to losing one of the last loved ones in his life is to shut down entirely, especially when he blames himself for that death.

The heartbreaking thing is that the Teacher did totally die for him, indirectly; I don’t think he knew he was going to die, but you get the sense that Teacher would willingly do it again and feel it was worth the cost. He wasn’t able to protect the baby bears through the end of their lives, but he made good on his promise by protecting them through the end of his. But to Jung-hoo, all he sees is that people around him die, and that’s devastating in a twofold way: first, he costs good people their lives, and second, he then has to live in a world where they’re dead.

So he’s become deathly afraid of building any sort of meaningful relationship, because every time it burns him, it cuts deeper and deeper. Yet in comes charging this girl who refuses to let him bully her away, informing him that she will stay put, and refusing to accept his fear of hurting her. Moreover, she isn’t about to let him sink into self-ruin, and insists on taking care of him. Young-shin is totally badass in all the best ways, and she just keeps getting better.

I love how he sees her next to his bed and sighs that it must be a dream, and only in his half-conscious state does he allow her to come close. Despite the fact that they totally got to snuggle in bed together, I appreciate that the scene wasn’t sexy in the least, but more poignantly sweet, letting our damaged hero find some comfort while his guard is lowered. When he’s fully awake, you can see how much he wishes he could believe her while his head warns him not to… but thankfully for all of us, there’s only so much denial you can handle before you cave and have to accept it already. (Accept the truth, kisses and all!) Somehow it feels fitting that he gets to be with his girl against the backdrop of his imagined paradise, ’cause I think he’s doing just fine where he is in his reality, once he finally allows himself his honesty.

Nice thanks for sharing. I kinda notice that JCW tends to update his social media close to the next airing of Healer. Which is great for me because every week we get a couple of new pics from our cute JCW :) ...which is unlike some celebrities who hardly ever post nor update photos! *cough* LMH *cough* lol...there's goes another point to in my books why I love JCW more than LMH. I love JCW for his constant communications with his fans. It really shows that he's thinking of us and even if he is promoting his drama, he gives great treats with his personal selfies. Most other celebs when they promoted their drama...they usually only give just a poster picture.

I agree. He knows how to treat his fans, his staff members, co worker and everybody near him or not. That is how you know he is not sucked into the fame world and shuts himself out. I was reading an article from Ji Chang Wook Kitchen about his photoshoot in China. There was a man who walked on set and was approaching JCW and the staff members were going to kick him out but JCW went to the man, shook his hand and greeted him. What a wonderful man!

Wow he's such a wonderful guy indeed ♥ I guess this is why all of his co-workers respect him because he's humble and treats everyone well. Great guy, I hope he stays the same now when he's more famous. Celebs like him are rare these days :)

Well, it might be two things:
1. It coincides with the promotion of the movie or;
2. Somebody at LMH's team is reading the posts here and the comparison between LMH and JCW, LMH just uploaded a couple of selfies on his FB page.

@maryann

Haha you are right, I just went back and checked LMH's Twitter account. Saw that he just posted 3 photos of himself 8 hours ago. It could be because of the movie or yeah LMH's team do monitor a lot so maybe one of them was reading DB haha!

To be honest, seeing his photos now I'm finding JCW to be more handsome. jCW looks younger...LMH has been my bias for awhile now finally there's someone who is able to beat him. I wish I had knew of JCW earlier...

I honestly don't know how I am going to cope after Healer ends. The possibility of extending Healer seems slim....What is the basis of extending dramas by a few episodes when some honestly don't need extensions and just do worst with the extensions? Like Pride and Prejudice? Empress Ki had one extension (probably based on popularity) and so forth. I know Blood is going to fill in the spot for Healer after it ends but is there really no chance of extending it?

I think extending it comes when the drama is really popular in ratings I guess, otherwise they wouldn't want to waste money on extra episodes if not a lot of people are going to tune in...

If anything, I get weary when series get extended... stories get added unnecessary fluff and it breaks the flow of the pacing that we have grown accustomed to and celebrated. It happened with YWCFAS and Reply 1994. So if they don't add an episode or 2, I'm completely ok with it. BUT if they add a special "wrap it up" interview/JCW mini concert episode... that would be awesome!!! :)

Sub-thread: Dreamingsnowflake2013's ANALYSIS

~Kim Moon Shik~

Kim Moon Shik is for me one of those many reasons that make this drama so enjoyable. There are shows that have great acting, directing and even writing but the writer sometimes falters and makes the villain one-dimensional. This is exactly what happened to SJN in Faith with Ki Chul who was supposed to be the great evil but in the end turned into a strange, grotesque even figure. On the other hand, KMS is everything but one-dimensional. We get to see his development, his motivations; glimpses of the man he used to be and the man he has become. There are no black and white things in this world, there are only many shades of grey and MS belongs to the darker side of that color spectrum. Yet, he never turns into a pure stereotypical evil, instead he remains a very flawed human being. The fact that both actors are great at portraying the various stages of MS’s life and the nuances of his characters also helps. I don’t know whether I’m the only one but something about Son Seung Won reminds me of Song Joong Ki in Nice Guy - the physical features, the shape of their faces, the tormented vulnerability and wise-beyond-his-years look of men who have seen and experienced things they shouldn’t have combined with their boyish appearance.

I truly believe that KMS used to be a good person and very responsible one, although a little bit taciturn and sombre - he lost his parents young and had to become an adult and a surrogate father to his own brother before his time and when he almost was a child himself; with that responsibility for his brother came the seriousness. He was always the realist and pragmatist among the five friends, never the dreamer. Still, he loved his friends and his brother and was always there for them, ready to help them despite his fear and doubts and for that I think he was very brave, maybe even the bravest of them all, because he had the most to lose; none of them had to take care of a little child at the tender age of 20 while facing all the dangers. He could have placed him into a children’s home but he didn’t.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I can’t help but see the parallels between MS-the Elder and Anakin/Darth Vader-Emperor. The scene between the Elder and the beaten up MS in episode 10 reminds me of Emperor making Anakin into his new apprentice in The Revenge of the Sith, turning his love for Padmé into his greatest weakness and exploiting it ruthlessly. Just like MS, Anakin felt forbidden love for his wife and was a loyal friend; just like Anakin, MS has never been a pure evil; his love was exploited and he became warped beyond recognition. We still don’t know the whole history behind MS’s betrayal and his slow descend to the dark side, but I wager a guess that his motives weren’t that selfish as some would think. MS was tortured and manipulated and his...

...perjury was no doubt the result of duress and extortion, and while there are no excuses for what he’s done, these are definitely mitigating circumstances.

I still believe that MS loves Myung Hee deeply - I wouldn’t call it selfish love or evil love because only love can made you do either great or terrible things or even both. However, I don’t think that Myung Hee was the primary reason, which made him betray his friends. I suspect that the thing that actually made him do it in the first place was to protect his little brother, the only person who’s left of his family. Saving Myung Hee, paying her hospital fees and his own guilt came only later and these were the last straws that made him to go fully to the dark side. I think that if MS didn’t lose his friends he would have never succumbed to the temptation of money or having the woman who didn’t belong to him (from the flashbacks he looked resigned to have no chance with her).

Another reason why I find MS to be such a tragic character is that no one really listened or even cared to listen to his side of the story, be it YJ or his own brother, they have blamed him immediately without giving him the opportunity to defend himself - it wouldn’t lessen his guilt or bring YS’s and JH’s fathers to life but perhaps their influence would have helped MS atone and confess one day, instead of becoming the servant of the Elder. Who knows, maybe his positive emotions; the man he used to be, the man hidden deep inside his heart may lead to his redemption in the end… or maybe not, maybe his is truly beyond any redemption. Only future will tell. Be it how it may, no matter what he would do now, it can’t stop MS from losing everything and everyone because of his own fear and greed; when the master falls, the apprentice follows him to the pits of hell.

Thanks, @AnnaAkana

This is an awesome analysis of the MS character. It made me tear up and looked more sympathetically at MS. A toast, once again, to DS2013.

Is that the name of the actor who played the young MS--Son Seung-won? He is excellent in portraying the young (vulnerable, caring, etc) MS. From the get go it was clear how really deeply he cared for Moon-ho and we know he was resigned to the unrequited love for Myung-hee.

Thanks, DS2013 for pointing out that nobody has ever listened to MS' side of the story. He offered to do that with Teacher (at the hospital scene) but that was dismissed cavalierly.

Such a tragic figure really. How how could he redeem himself? Will he still, as we had hoped earlier, do a Snape?

@ AnnaAkana, lunatic4kd and dramabliss

I'm glad to see that Moon Shik gets more analysis time. He has appeared always as a sombre character, usually silent but perhaps actually with a lot to say. Something about him has made my heart ache from time to time, wondering 'what if' ... given different choices, under different circumstances, what great things he might have done.

In my conjectures, I envision that in the end, to save his loved ones, Myung Hee and Moon Ho, he would make the ultimate sacrifice. As kdrama characters in other shows have said, it is tiring to play a role where one is not free. I believe that the fatigue of being a lackey for Elder, his loyalty to Moon Ho and the added push of wanting to protect his family, will finally make Moon Shik do a Snape. It may not redeem him completely, but it will assure us that the man triumphs over the beast. :)

@Lunatic4kd, Dramabliss, Growingbeautifully, & Alien..

You're welcome :) I'm actually glad that she took time to look at MS's character too since I felt that his character has many layers to him too. It's true and I do agree that he is a tragic character and there shouldn't been many chances for him to stop himself from going to the dark side had Teacher or his own brother listened to his side of the story. Then maybe those can influence him.

As for comparing him to Snape, I loved Snape at the end of Harry Potter and how redeemed himself but I don't think that Snape's actions can be compared to MS here. Snape was always loyal to Dumbledore and it was his love for Lily Evans that kept him loyal. He would never interfere nor hurt Lily and Harry. We saw how he protected Harry up until the very end. So his sacrifice at the end made such an impact on me. I cried a lot. Whereas with MS, he even dares to kill MH's close friend (teacher) and tries to hurt JH by setting a trap to capture JH. MS isn't loyal to MH nor Myunghee to the point where he would not hurt her daughter or JH. With Snape we saw how he protects Harry all the rime when he's in danger (behind the scenes) like a silent protector. MS, on the other, would not lift a finger to protect his loved one if he had heard they're in danger. He knows yet he won't do anything about it. That's what I think for those two characters...

As for doing what Snape did in the end to redeem himself...then maybe he might die to protect his family. Who knows, I'm looking forward to what this writer has in store for us :)

0

Not to mention with Snape, he wouldn't hesitate to protect Harry if he hears about it. My point is MS probably wouldn't do anything if Elder orders it but Snape would try to protect Harry without leaving anyone knowing (besides Dumbledore).

0

@ AnnaAkana

With Moon Shik, I feel his only unwavering loyalty might be to Moon Ho. If he is to sacrifice to save anyone, it will probably be more for Moon Ho than even for Myung Hee. But again, this is just a guess based on what I feel loving a person should encompass.

IE to really love Myung Hee, he should also love/protect the people that Myung Hee loves, and he did not do this where Ji An was concerned.

However we also see that MS has a warped idea of love and protection. He may think he can save and protect Myung Hee (and wanted to offer the same to YS) by keeping her to himself, isolated, fettered and without information. Sigh ... it's so hard to figure what will be ... I hope the writer will surprise us in a nice way. :)

This is a really great analysis of MS. I could not have said it any better. Thank you for posting this. I love reading these analysis of the characters because we are able to do that with the great writing. Without the great writing, these analysis would not make sense or be credible. Awesome on Healer for all of these great elements.

I loved the ending of EP 14. Sure, it was a cliffhanger but I didn't think it was as bad as the end of ep 12 where we were all practically just DYING to see what happens next and if she finally finds out who Healer is. The ending of ep 14 was sweet and gentle, which is what I appreciate about this drama a lot. The romance isn't ...pushy. There are no grand gestures about their confession, or a big shove away of "I need to protect you so I'm going to pretend like I hate you so you stay far from me." It was simple but sweet. I especially loved how all the things that Young Shin wanted to do in EP 13, where she said she was holding back from wanting to hold hands, hug etc., came true in ep 14 and she took the initiative to do them without apprehension.

Like most of you, I replayed the last 3 minutes of ep 14 soo many times. The acting and the chemistry here are off the charts that's for sure, but I loved the emotions were so well-played by the JCW and PMY, especially JCW. When Young Shin pulled him for a hug and his face just crumpled in tears, I just..can't. I loved how when she first started kissing him, he didn't really kiss her back right away...as though he was still holding back but just her taking the initiative to hold him and to kiss him was enough collapse all the walls that he had been trying so hard to put up just because everyone who was so close to him left him or was taken away. That scene floored me. I FELT those emotions. ugh, it was like he was just so affected by the fact that this one girl chose to stay by his side without fear of whatever that lays ahead of them.

City Hunter was my #1 favorite drama of all time and watching Healer reminded me of that show but to be honest, I feel like Healer has more depth and more heart to it. ALL THESE FEELS. Safe to say, Healer has taken the spot haha. It makes a difference when the main girl is integral to the plot and not just a side love-interest that bad daddy can use against you for being a rebel.

I'm with you on this one. I liked City Hunter a lot because it was so different from other dramas when it came out...but sad to say...Healer has topped all my favorites and is at my number #1 spot and for all sorts of reasons: writer, plot, main leads, supporting leads, everyone can act, depth of the story and the off the charts chemistry that I have never felt for any other OTP before.

Yes! I first started watching Healer because I saw the similarities to City Hunter + the sudden explosion in comments in ep 8. As a long time lurker, it was truly shocking and made me curious to find out the reason for the sudden rise in its popularity. I still can't pinpoint it for sure, but perhaps it's because that was the point where the romance and tension went up several notches. So yes, I've been spazzing about this drama to all my friends and my family, now my sis, bro and mom are crazy about Healer too. ^^ #noregrets #Healerrocksmyworld #SlayedbyJCW

I had watched City Hunter's first 3 episodes but never continued. What I saw was good though, but when watched Healer's first 3 episodes, I think it was Bong Soo and Jung Hoo's characters that really drew me in... but I have to agree that when episode 8 happened... and he straight saved her propelling down the elevator to get to her.... WOWOWOWOOW! Then the first kiss?!? What did they just do those last 10 minutes?!? Then it became this pattern where the last 10 minutes ended the episodes with memorable moments of VERY substantial episodes in and of itself already. And I HATE watching an episode, then checking how much time is left and realizing how fast the episode went! Episode 14 was no exception. Although we didn't see Healer in the mid portion as much, there he was to take over our screen and hearts all over again in the last 10 minutes trying to make YS leave in his weakened state. So.darn.awesome.

Eeeee.... that kiss. It's so bittersweet and so real. It's not just the kisses, I find the flow of this story very neatly done. It keeps us in suspense with what really happened in 1992, and keeps us thinking if MS is evil or not. How far has he gone. The character development of our leads are amazingly drawn out. I'm very happy with the way YS discovered Bong Soo's identity as the healer. She didn't caught him by seeing him as the healer but she remembers how his hands feel. I like it.

Yes I am feeling like a byuntae myself. I do imagine a bed scene for next episode after that awesome-tastic kiss. One could only hope right.

JH looks defeated seconds before the kiss. Defeated by YS's resolved to stay with him. I've seen JCW is EK and SDH before but I never really noticed his acting. and his acting here in healer really is one of the best I've seen in kdramas. PMY too, she acted good here. Was it because of the chemistry? They really look good together,

I LOVED THIs Episode!! I was waiting for the moment Youngshin will find out who Healer really was and how they will react afterwards. And oh my, this episode and show proved to be noteworthy. I swear I was on the edge of seat throughout the whole show especially this episode when she found out and when Teacher died. I was on the verge of tears. Moreover, the part when Youngshin goes to Healer's lair and snuggles with him in bed to keep him warm, I wanted to squeal so bad. This show knows how to make me go crazy. And I cant even start with Ji Changwook, my only regret is I should have known this guy earlier in my life..seriously he's such a great actor. I've always thought Kim Jaewook or Leeminho and certain actors were really good but Changwook is off the top the best of the best of actors. I agree how his acting doesnt make it seem like hes acting but actually "him" and we are also taking part with him. I admit there are some actors who can do that and or maybe its just me where I am easily swayed by actors acting abilities but Changwook is one of them who can take me into the drama and make it seem like what his character is experiencing is really real. Especially the scenes when he found out that his teacher died and saw his limp body being taken out into the ambulance and went to grab his car and how he was shaken up badly and couldnt move or when YS goes to him and he says that he will hurt, etc and how he cries and opens up when she hugged him. I felt it all, the emotions, the goal, the force that drives him to be human, his pain and his reasons. And that's why I am falling in love with not only Healer as a drama but more in love Changwook. He should definitely win an award for this drama alongside everyone else. This will one of those dramas that will stick to me for a long time. Go Healer and cant wait for the next episodes. I swear I am going to die...lol...

So...I have a crazy thought and I don't know if anyone else thought of this as well...but doesn't anyone also have a crazy thought that Ahjumma may be living in the same abandoned building as JH but on a different floor? I mean her lair looks very much like an abandoned building too since it's dark and the walls/floors looks similar to JH's...

she needs server power and a backup generator, at the least. she would have had a way to enter his lair and no need to send YS hunting for him.
and i don't think he wouldn't have spotted her presence long ago. nope, i don't think she's close to him.

no, the question of the moment is this: (since JH knows YS is ji-an and that her mother is alive) WILL JH TELL YS ABOUT MYUNG-HEE'S EXISTENCE? (and how soon, obviously.)

i think not telling her immediately will not bring about happiness for them in the close future. she's been interested in learning why her parents abandoned her, and even if MH told JH that a mother-daughter reunion will be unhealthy for both, he - JH - already knows MH is less than trustworthy. he even gave him the finger, figuratively speaking, when MH was trying to salvage the situation in that underground parking lot where they fought. will he tell YS or will he wait until too late, to let her know?

because if he keeps it in, inevitably myung-hee and YS will still find each other, and myung-hee knows JH... and then YS will know too, that he kept her mother from her...

aaaah, the dilemma. i want him to just tell her. can't he? he should tell her.

@ shelly

Will JH tell YS about MHee?

Nope. Not just yet, anyway.

JH witnessed MHee falling into a seizure at the mention of Ji An the last they met. It’s thus a wise and reasonable precaution for JH to ask Hacker Ahjumma for MHee’s medical records to determine whether it would be safe for MHee to meet YS/JA. Ahjumma has also promised JH to get a full analysis of MHee’s condition. Until those records or analysis are obtained, JH cannot be faulted for keeping secret MHee’s relationship with YS, without regard to whether MHo approves of the revelation or otherwise.

Also, at this point in time, JH does not know of YS’ dream of seeking out her biological parents. For now at least, JH cannot be faulted for keeping secret the mother/daughter link.

However, rather than being informed by others of their link, I think it would be better for MHee and YS to discover themselves their mother/daughter relationship. The interview with MHee that YS has been trying to set up will provide that chance. It will be good for MHee to see for herself how well YS has grown up to be, that despite her history, YS is spunky, bright, adorable, caring, courageous and lovable. MHee already has a subconscious link with YS, finding her voice to be pleasing to the ears. Finding YS to have grown up well, BEFORE discovering that YS is actually her daughter will go a long way towards assuaging her guilt of having lived while thinking that her daughter is dead, if the onset of her seizures were in fact brought upon by feelings of guilt and not over-medication.

So, should JH tell YS? Nope. Not just yet, if at all. :-)

but YS doesn't have to go meet mom and spill the secret immediately after she learns it!

and when YS - having learned about myung-hee a different way (there's no hands-feel about this, lol) - finds out myung-hee already met JH long since, and starts putting all jung-ho's and all healers and all secretive non-revealing mysterious boyfriends together, 'cause she's smart like that, it doesn't bode well for poor PH.

he already kept her in the dark - and made her angry - with the multiple personas and their motivations for being close to her (BS was her cute clumsy hoobae and confidant until he wasn't; healer was her secret crush and protector from the shadows, until he wasn't; JH's still an unknown, and he's already keeping secrets that will hurt a lot from her...)
how can she let this one pass too? the only way - in dramas anyway - is that she get really-really, break-up level mad, but forgives and forgets him when either he or she lies down dying for reasons. i don't want a city-hunter or faith type of ending, where they didn't meet for a while (hundreds of years, in faith!!!!) before the last scene together where they get their HEA. i like the ambiguous, open-ended, infinite-possibilities ending but this time i'd rather have JH and YS at the same table, having won through all hardships, eventually with him being taught cooking with or without onions lol.

now i went and jinxed it didn't i. we'll going to get the faith/CH ending. they're gonna break up or one of them is going to go missing (for reasons) and then they'll get back together right before the final credits. omg... we need to hire a healer to deal with this :D

i still think JH should tell her and let her decide when and how to meet her mom. he doesn't know YS wants to meet mom, but he's almost an orphan himself, he could feel the same way she does. he did go find his own mom as soon as he could, right? why not YS?

TELL her, dammit!

LOL! I did not go back and check, however I do believe that most rooftops have enough similarities so that it's hard to differentiate one from another.

But a more compelling reason for it to be the same rooftop for many scenes is that the Pdn team is already familiar with it, have permission to film there or may have their equipment there which is difficult to bring down and up again to another rooftop. LOL!!

That being said, however, I saw the Making Of for Misaeng and those poor pdn crew actually did carry big, heavy equipment up and down several flights of steps everyday or quite often!!!! Awesome, hard-workers all these people are! :)

This is crazy...how is it that a drama is making us all giddy like this. How is it that we are able to continuously talk and talk about a drama like this?

It's like we are all in a whirlwind of Healercraze and just can't seem to escape from it.

I've tried really hard to step back a bit and try to look at Healer in an objective way. Am I just swept away by this Healercraze?? Will I still love this drama when it is long over??

I've had dramas affect me very deeply - no doubt about it - but I never felt the urge to join a forum about them and feel like I'm in similar company with my feelings and reactions to Healer. The feelings it produces in me for EVERYTHING : the writing, directing, editing, actors, sets, costumes, little details, the phenomenal plot and pacing of a complex story tat is completely intriguing and the hands-down, over-the-top BEST development of a love story acted out by two amazing and astonishingly beautiful actors have created a reaction in me that has no holes at all. There's nothing leaking out - no discrepancies- no negative moments at all, so that I constantly feel 100% satisfied and actually overflowing with love. it's like Healer is far more than the sum of its parts. it's magic. it's alchemy. And that produces a sort of rapturous response in all of us. The only thing I regret about Healer is that I can't watch it again for the try first time, because the feels we get as we go along are terrific. There - that's all I can say!!
Other dramas that knocked me over: A Love to Kill; La Dolce Vita; Gaksital, King2Hearts, Tree With Deep Roots…but Healer is the top of the heap for me and also my #100th. Ahhhhh!

@helkwo Wow that's a long list indeed!

Looking at the list of Dropped Dramas, I take it that those with 0.0 are ones you didn't get around to watching at all? Or maybe you started but dropped them right away? I infer that because there were dropped ones with ratings. From the 0.0 group may I recommend the following, if you have a mind to give them another chance: Sunkyungkwan Scandal, History of a Salaryman, and Friend, Our Legend.

SS (only if you like sageuks) mainly because it's one of the earlier dramas of PMY. I loved her and her character in that and I think she was more like CYS there than the other characters she has played.

History of a Salaryman is a hoot, Lee Bong Soo at his best.

Friend, Our Legend is a noir drama, dark and gritty (don't know if this is your cup of tea) but it is one of those with trifecta - excellent writing, directing, acting. It is also considered Hyun Bin's masterpiece.

Not in your list but highly recommended: Tree with Deep Roots, Story of a Man, Giant (50 episodes), and Can You Hear My Heart? TDR (sageuk) showcases the development of the Hangul and illustrates why King Sejong truly deserves the title "the Great", an honour given to only two kings in Korea's long history. SofaM has some Cruel City vibes, and has Kim Mi-kyung playing another badass character. CYHMH is melo but not makjang, excellent cast ensemble; the feels are great. Giant -- well, it is a giant of a drama, in more ways than its length and scope.

0

@dramabliss Thanks for the recommendations, I will give another try some of those dramas you've mentioned, especially when I am lost as to what to watch after Healer.

0

I've watched A Tree With Deep Roots and Jang Hyuk was good in it.

0

@dramabliss, good drama choices!

I LOVE Sunkyungkwan Scandal and History of a Salaryman (soo funny) and also Giant. Those last 2 don't usually get recommended a lot, but I love them!

I didn't know what to expect of Sunkyungkwan Scandal, it was my first sageuk ever, but I was pleasantly surprised! It's one of my favorite dramas to re-watch.

I would recommend King of Dramas. It totally gave me a good perspective of the live-shooting system.

Haven't seen Friend, Our Legend and Story of a Man (really planning to see this because of this writer). Thanks for listing your recommendations!

0

@helkwo

I was thinking of suggesting that to her! I discovered mydramalist only recently, and it's helped me so much! I wish I'd discovered it sooner. I even have my profile linked to my name here :)

I am really intrigued with PMY and JCW's chemistry (sorry if this has been over-analyzed,:( but I just could not help myself, LOL).

PMY had good chemistry with LMH in City Hunter and even with the stoic YC in SKKS. But with JCW, it's in a totally different league. Could be maturity, experience, but I'm thinking it's because of JCW. I have never watched a JCW drama before. How was his chemistry with his other leads?

@Ottoke

I am also watching JCW for the 1st time in Healer but I came across a comment in db by a person who is following JCW from the very beginning and watched all of his works...

she was amazed but not very much surprized by OTP's chemistry, according to her it's JCW's quality to create good chemistry with co-stars, she also mentioned that JCW had a good chemistry with the "wooden newbie" (her description) in
WARRIOR BAEK DONG SOO

I think the very best actors and actresses have this ability to draw out better than usual performances from their co-stars, and can have chemistry with a tree. NOT saying that PMY is a tree. Not at all.

@KDaddict I agree with you - I think it's the very best actors that are able to draw out better than usual performances/chemistry with their co-stars. JCW is a prime example of bringing out the best in PMY. This is by far the best role I have seen her in. Same goes for LJS with PSH in Pinocchio, LJS was able to bring out the best in PSH, even with the kiss scene. Like no one ever was able to make her kiss as believable as LJS did.

Yeah PSH kissed back !!!!!!! I literally screamed after watching that ... Ha ha ha

@fantasy haha lol! :)

I liked PMY in SKKS to be honest, I have not watched CH so I don't know, but about chemistry in SKKS I think the problem was not PMY, it was Yoochun .... I liked SKKS very much specifically Song Jong Ki , he was just outstanding there and he rocked in Innocent Man. I was too happy to find he has the most number of banners in db :) , usually I end liking the actors who are not very popular exception LJS

0

Required fields are marked *

Honestly, I think it could be all of what you mentioned (maturity, experience...JCW). I'm one of the ones who also can't say much about JCW's chemistry, but I did like the little I saw of him and Ha Ji-won together in Empress Ki.

Something I will also say, though, is that, at the end of the day, I think the individual characters are better written in Healer than in SKKS and City Hunter. I simply like them a bit more and think that, together, their chemistry is really interesting and layered. While in the others, her chemistry was just 'good'. Then when you add that JCW is a better actor (imo, the other 2 are still good) AND that PMY is doing better here than she's ever done, it makes sense that the chemistry would be on another level.

I've read dramabeans for many years and I've never once commented. The reason why Healer brings me out is because I connect to the drama like no other. While other heroes are often flawed, they are minimally relatable. Maybe it's that I sometimes feel lonely or I have emotional issues much like the Healer does - it makes me root for him and it makes the drama that much more beautiful

By the way, for those who keep asking for preview...these guys over Soompi (pg 550) has a good point...

fidda868 said:

"Ohh guyss..don't be too frustrated about not getting any preview for episode 15..they must have not yet finished shooting both episodes i guess.. I had watch few times of drama shooting in my country..my good friend is one of the assistant director of dramas..trust me..it's not easy..a scene of 5 minutes duration took about 2 hours or more of shooting..depends on the scene & numbers of cast for that particular scene..aigoo..they must be sooo tired as still filming both episodes..hopefully nobody will get sick.. i dont mind getting the episode preview as long as i still can watch both of our OTP in next episode.. "

Kanyaprasetyo said:

"That's the peril of live-shooting..
I actually involved in some amateur movie productions back then. As you said, just making 5mins of video took few hours... When we made short movie of 15mins duration, we need about 2 weeks of making films n editing.. So you guys could probably guess how many hours and days spent on making dramas... I noticed in Healer, at least the quality is not declining yet... So much dramas falter in the second half because they're too rushed to filming n sometimes just doesn't have enough footage to fill 1 hour of episode... That way they would use flashbacks to fill the airtime.. As you can see in ep 13, they give us flashback to backtrack the earlier ep... JCW also not appear much on ep 14 because at that time he was also busy to perform his musical... He also looks haggard in recent eps..
I only hope the actors and crew can safely filming and the drama still retain the quality till the end."

And as for the 'spoilery' BTS kiss scene of episode 14, someone from Soompi also mentioned that the director said cut straight away and then "again". Meaning they have to do the kiss scene again, and you see JCW's reaction to it - he was deeply exhaling and inhaling haha. So I guess that's good news right? Doing the kiss scene again would next episode there would be a continuation? (I really hope so.... Please writer-nim!) :)

@ siesta

True ... true .... I applaud them really. I guess they have to be and are really professional. They know that physical contact is part of the job so they have to act their part, but they must not let it become personal. If that happens, actors will become uncomfortable with each other and it will affect their work. Same as in other jobs actually .... the whole issue of sexual harrassment, etc. :)

Yes, after watching the BTS, where they created that scene and mood surrounded by, like, 50 crew and lights, poles and all kinds of equipment! I really appreciate that scene even more!

As for the re-take of the kiss scene - good point, @Bongsookie! Guess we can look forward to a leisurely, close-up, extended continuation of the last 3 secs of Ep 14! I'd have no problems with a 360 degree swirling kiss, either!

Regarding live-shooting.

It is true Healer depends on live-shooting now, but it has nothing to do with flashbacks in ep 13. Likewise, JCW's less appearance in ep 14 has nothing to do with his appearance in the musical. Flashbacks were required for YS to confirm her suspicion of BS being no other than the Healer, and ep14 needs back stories of MJ, MH's awakening to the world, and MH's prep to conterattack his brother MS.

Even though im really really happy with developments in JH and YS's relationship, i just realized that im not ready to let go of terms of endearment for each other :P The sunbae and bong sook-ah relationship. Maybe she will switch from bong sook-ah to jung hoo-ya (swoons) but im not ready to let go of him calling her sunbae. Even though it sounds sexy to hear him call her chae young shin and gives me so many feels (i only replayed it 5542423556165432 times) sunbae still wins my heart.

And also after watching teacher's message for JH (starts bawling my eyes out) about getting married, having 2 kids and all that pets i kept wondering how i would want the last scene of healer to be. Happy ending for our otp obviously but after hours of deliberation i finally decided that at this moment this is how i would want healer to end and this scenario really cracked me up.
Our otp married with a mini jung hoo. And the ending scene could be
Mini jung hoo playing at a park with his friends. Our otp watching over him and having their own private time ;) Then cut to the playground where mini jung hoo and and another girl (his potential sweetheart :P) reenacting our favorite otp moments.. (like a parody) it could be anything :P like
1. Mini jung hoo and the girl are playing with their friends. Suddenly a few boys come to start a fight with them. All of their friends run away except for them. And then the girl stepping forward and asking him to run away and call their parents while she stalls them :P (cue eternal love as bg music *lmao*)
2. The girl is playing the blindfold game with her friends. While playings catches onto mini jung hoo instead of her friends . And then mini jung hoo holds onto her hand and says in a husky voice (well as husky as a child can say :P) "i have told you before havent i? Not to go around and touching anyone so easily" (again cue eternal love :P)
3. They playing hide and seek with their friends. Both of them hide in the same place. And when the catcher finds them, the girl holding onto mini jung hoo's armand dragging him off with mini jung hoo smirking from behind. :P (like father like son)
4. The girl bossing him around and mini jung hoo listening to her while making faces at her when she's not looking...
In short i want healer to end on a light note with our mini jung hoo reenacting any one of our famous otp scenes with another girl. An with jung hoo and younng shin watching them with a knowing smile. That would be sweet yet hilarious.
So how would you write the ending scene for healer? Share your thoughts :P

0

Maybe mini Jung Hoo could pull the little girl's hat down over her eyes and ... pull her ponytail before running off (in embarrassment at his 'confession', of course!)

Or they're sharing lollies/food, and mini Jung Hoo always gives his mini sweetheart *two* of them, 'cos everyone knows that's how it's done!

Or they could re-enact the kids' sleepover scene where they hold onto each other as they sleep?

Maybe it's because now that YS knows that the person she's been in love with turned out to be Bongsookie all along, she's probably already comfortable. I mean, he's already seen all sides of her - makeup and no makeup so it's not like meeting your lover for the first time and having to impress him. When she went on that first date with Healer, she dressed to impress since she doesn't know who Healer is.

I actually like the fact that she doesn't have to dress up for JH. When you're at a stage in your relationship where you're comfortable with each other and really love each, it doesn't matter what the person looks on the outside. what matters is the person on the inside....which is what YS proved to JH with that kiss. That she knows deep inside he's the person she love and she chooses to believe that he won't hurt her - despite the fact that he had lied about his identity.

Many have said that actions scenes of city hunter are better than Healer.. Though I have not watched CH, I too think action scenes could be better in Healer, JCW is looks capable to do it, I think it is the problem in directions or way of shooting or editing.... It is funny but JH seemed more aggressive against Moon Ho and than the goons :P

Even the scene beating Dae Young, he looks a complete b****rd to me, after that scene I felt glad that I discovered JCW in this drama. He experiments with his acting, I don't know he has done before or not but if I would discover him in any negative or villainous character I might have ended hating him :P
I meant his acting is that great :)

Agree! I really have issues w/ the action scenes that could be really about editing and lighting & such. But I like that there's some realistic portrayal to Seo Jung Hoo's character. He's actually not a Hero when he's considered an ex-con afterall. Trained by a bad ass in a freestyle way. He just do things as part of his job that just happened to bring him to his past that entangles him. He doesn't really concern others but not a goon type that will just beat up people randomly. Unlike in CH where Poo Chai/Lee Yoon Sung is trained by a ex-police officer in a discipline and was bound to be a people's hero by knocking down evil govt official for a master that gets drown on his revenge.

The two grew up on a very different environment when though both had master to look up too, still Seo Jung Hoo has a mother that can't be with him so he grew up independently and have to survive on his own while Lee Yoon Sung had people who cared for him in Thailand where he grew up. that's why I think though there's same vibe it's still different.

Sorry, but since when is SJH an ex-con? Or have I really missed something big here?

He spent time on juvenile. Remember, it was his master who was outside to pick him up? That was their first meeting; he went along with him because of the bank passbook master showed him?

Thanks for your response merry.

I believe however that going to a juvenile detention centre cannot be equated to being sent to prison. Juvies are reform schools intended to reform or change a juvenile's delinquent tendencies so that they do not commit crimes after becoming an adult and be sent to prison for that. Although students' movements are restricted, these centres are still considered schools.

In my part of the world, one may even enroll into any of these schools voluntarily, by choice. Being admitted into juvie is not not always by order of a juvenile court. :-)

I actually think it's fine that Seo Jung Hoo doesn't have fight scenes like Lee Yoon Sung because of the exact thing you said. They are completely different characters and it is more realistic to portray Seo Jung Hoo as just that. It fits his character and the story more. Regardless of the action scenes not being as cool as in City Hunter, I actually like the action scenes. He's human and I personally love the way JCW fights. It's good enough for Healer. He's flexible and has techniques instead of going for straight kills because he doesn't kill.

" JH seemed more aggressive against Moon Ho and than the goons"

but he was actually angry when he was beating MH up- while for the goons they're just in the way of his job. no emotions involved

I think u may have misinterpreted what I wanted to say by that. I mentioned that scene to explain that JCW could do the action scenes better as he can portray aggression well too if the scene shot well.

And that JH MH scene is one of the best in this drama which is unquestionable :)

I was reading on Soompi before and saw a comment that said the writer's father passed away recently. Maybe this episode was really raw in emotions because it is happening concurrently while her passed away..? Not sure how much it affects her writing though, some writers can be very professional and separate work from personal life.

Ji Chang Wook Stresses Differences Between “Healer” And “Pinocchio,” Despite Both Being about Journalists

Not to mention, our writer Song Jina writes beautifully

heeeeee, is he implying something here? :D the kitten has claws :D

i didn't even notice healer being about journalism; there are reporters in it, but they don't do much of the good fight with writing, so far. and JH doesn't do reporting at all. unless all reporters find their info and secret video files by beating the daylights out of mobsters who hide those files?

... thought not.

It's an interview given at the press conference before the drama started airing ^^
There is this phase on the Healer book (an underground publication 1981) cover though "The media exists to diagnose and heal this society’s pains".
And I find it is adorable how he said that Song Jina writes beautifully :)

I actually liked the message that Pinocchio wanted to give to the society that how the false news can ruin a person and family, so the reporters should understand their responsibility and not only go after publicity.. But the direction and script writing were not so good that is why they could not pull out the drama with such a good theme to a great level despite of having good actors .... I personally did not like the chemistry between PSH and LJS though many liked it..

Healer what I found is not about how reporters work, it portrays a story of honest and brave reporters who can challenge the political powers and called a war

So basically Pinocchio is reminder to reporters of their duties towards society and Healer is about bunch of honest journalists who worked for society

Required fields are marked *

Healer and Pinocchio have overlapping themes. However, the role that media/news/reporters play in society is the core theme in Pinocchio while it is just a sub-motif in Healer. I believe Healer’s main theme relates more to relationships (especially friendship/family) and how chinks, especially betrayal, can wreak havoc in the lives of those involved. All these happen with media as one of the major backdrops.

I found this video (Radio star) where the two were interviewed. They were also partners before in "Thrill me" and they kissed in this musical ! In this interview (eng sub), OJH even described how it was to kiss JCW lol

It's very funny even if JCW didn't talk much ^^

Oh Monday.... Wherefore art hou? Trying to stay away from spoilers is rather difficult... Argh! But my sisters and I have been discussing episode 14 and how we couldn't do anything cause we were so emotionally gutted by JCW's performance. Thank God my sisters are caught up so we could rave and gush about the show with each other in person! My husband gave the first episode a shot and he was confused about all the character introductions (didn't realize there were so many!)... So I just said, "Read Dramabeans! They explain it all!"

A similar thing happened when I introduced this to my younger sister. She was confused with the first episode. When I asked her when she got hooked to the show, she said ep 2. Lol. So things get explained rather quickly and then it unravels in a beautiful way.

But I just love sharing the love of this show with my sisters.... we think we're going to introduce this show to our mom now ;)

I have asked many times this question, again asking now

How would YS react to the fact that JH's father was accused of her biological father's murder????

Please share your thoughts

0

Required fields are marked *

@fanatasy

Well I think YS will be shocked or surprised at the revelation at first but I don't think she will hate JH for it. Just like how she didn't believed that Healer was a murderer when the detective told her, I think with regards to JH's father, she'll want to investigate and clear SJS's name.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

accused, never proven. and if they discover he was murdered, he's not going to be a suspect worth considering, even.

the first to come to JH's dad defense was the grieved wife of the victim, so i don't think YS's reaction will differ from that. she didn't even remember her biological father, so she wouldn't be even tempted to have a strong reaction as if it was, say, her adoptive dad (and if anything happened to the adoptive dad, i'd have a strong reaction myself lol.)

aaaand as JH told MH, the whole mess years ago was made by the adults, so they should go play among themselves and let the youngsters alone, too :D

i'll be waiting to see the mama bears, though, teacher told the bear story with a reason, and i hope it wasn't just an allegory. i want myung-hee to go all warlike to protect her cub, and i want JH to get support from his mother, too. or maybe his mama bear is ahjumma? though she said she "definitely ain't his mother" :D

@ fantasy

I love conjecturing too .... what will happen next and stuff like that.

WRT to your question: I'll start by thinking ... What do we know of YS so far? She has the ability to trust people in-spite of being abused before, because of her wonderful father and his advice. She is no fool and gets angry if she thinks she has been deceived, but she is able to be angry without being over-taken by it. She can still think reasonably and look for mitigating reasons to explain what seems out of character or wrong to her. She definitely knows how to love, which means, she knows how to take the bad with the good in each person, to forgive and acknowledge her own mistakes.

So where does this take us when we consider how she will react to knowing JH's father (supposedly) killed her father, and that this was hidden from her by everyone who knew.
1) First reaction shock, disbelief, denial

2) When the thought sinks in .... anger and some harsh words perhaps ... may need to distance herself from people so that she can think it through ... not noble idiocy and not disappearing for years though

3) After thinking about it ... she'll come to realise that neither she nor JH had any hand in the past and just as they could not have controlled it, they can't change it but at the same time it has no bearing on their future. If forgiveness is required, she will forgive JH and Moon Ho etc.

I feel that this is the most reasonable way for her character to behave and since the writer has been keeping with what is realistic thought, behavior and feelings so far. I trust that this is not too far off from what will happen!!!! LOL!

@ Annaakana, shelly an GB

Thanks for ur replies. I know even if YS won't react the way we want, at some point she would be reunited with JH. Its just me who don't want to see JH in pain again. It's all JCW's acting but still it has a great power to torment my heart like anything.

I won't compare JCW with any other actor but it's true I have never seen a k drama actor who could bring a character into real life as many of you said that JH does not remain fictional anymore :)

May be in future I would always compare his other works with healer. So be ware oppa , you have raised the bar too high for yourself also ;)

How lucky we all are to have such glorious goodness in ONE drama as JWC, YTJ and PMY....each of them - so superb!

Wow, de ja vu! This is exactly what happened to me.

Healer was the first time I laid my eyes on YJT and I was smitten. So like you, I did research, too and discovered what a talented man he is (also an award-winning director).

When I got to his personal life, whaaaah, I got jealous. He has a statuesque and beautiful wife, model Kim Hyo-jin, with whom he has a son. They look so good together.

Do you know that aside from having a graduate degree in media and film, he is also pursuing a masters degree in social work? He is also into philanthropy, doing many charity activities, and acting as honorary ambassador for World Vision.

I eat up every Moon-ho scene. He is my kind of male specimen.
