Lee Jin-wook to reteam with Nine producers in Three Musketeers
by javabeans
The producers of Nine: Nine Time Travels and Queen In-hyun’s Man have been planning a new drama series, which is notable for being produced as a three-season show, especially since true multi-season dramas are still pretty rare in dramaland. (Many franchises, like the I Need Romance series, aren’t really sequels but sister shows within a brand.)
I thought Nine was one of the smartest, sharpest shows last year so I was already interested (and the romantic fusion fantasy Queen In-hyun’s Man wasn’t too shabby either), but now they’re casting their Nine leading man Lee Jin-wook, and that’s just shot my interest through the roof. Oh, and the plot ain’t too bad either: It’s The Three Musketeers, Joseon-style, and promises lots of action and romance.
Lee Jin-wook is reportedly working out the details of his contract (so not 100% final, but very likely to take the role, hopefully-probably-maybe — you know, the usual media dance) and would play one of the three main Joseon swordsmen who protect Crown Prince Sohyeon. Sohyeon was King Injo’s son and died a mysterious death that has prompted speculation throughout history (some say the king killed him, or that he was poisoned), so this drama will be mixing the historical backdrop of this famous Joseon intrigue with the flavor of the classic Dumas tale.
I’ve liked Lee Jin-wook for a while, but it really wasn’t till Nine came along that he broke out and really shone; he finally managed to put everything together, playing an interesting character and giving his performance a gravitas and groundedness he hadn’t had before. So I’m happy to have him reuniting with the producers who brought that out in him, and hope The Three Musketeers can achieve everything it sounds like it’s aiming to be — swashbuckling and sweeping and funny and romantic. What, like that’s too much to ask for?
The project boasts a hefty production budget of 10 billion won and will usher tvN into the realm of high-budget, high-action blockbusters. According to a source with the production, the story is being outlined in three main arcs from the outset, each of which will form the basis of its season. The first season will be aiming for an August premiere, and plans to begin filming in June.

(Thank you, darcyM. ^^)
Oh gods. Please cast Song Jae Rim. Someone? Anyone?
If the four musketeers are taken, make Rim the dead prince, appearing for exposition or as a Tragic Meaningful Death flashback every episode.
If Prince role is taken, make Rim the son of an obscure branch of royalty, trying to grab the throne for himself.
If power-grabbing second cousin twice removed is taken, make Rim the corrupt Minister of Hanbok Design or something. Manipulating textile prices for profit.
If corrupt Minister is already taken, make Rim the most popular and talented cross-dressing gisaeng of the era, under orders of the King to spy on evil Ministers who plan evil deeds in gisaeng establishments.
If cross-dressing gisaeng spy is taken, make Rim the Very Important Reclusive Monk who lives in the mountains and knows a Very Important Secret which he doesn't want to share with the world because he has cast off all human interaction. The Very Important Monk that our Musketeers have to find on a quest and convince to work with the good guys, but not before he puts them through a training montage where they climb up and down mountains and collect water using leaky pots or something.
... just, give the guy a role, please?

I am torn between the cross-dressing gisaeng spy and the Very Important Reclusive Monk. I do love a good training montage...

Training montage is fun but if we're going for most screentime, I'll choose the "Dead Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Friend/Prince".
They're guaranteed to show up every episode in flashback to remind us why the Leading Man/Lady is VEEEERY SAD and VEEEEERY DRIVEN to avenge said death. Hehe

Yayy mary.
If nothing else happens he can be the bard that writes the story or maybe baduk playing god ;-)
Maybe you should stop praying for drama roles and wish that he gets tons of cf's requiring short films or mv's like lee min ho

Not the prince, Park Dalyang who is supposed to be equivalent of D'Artagnan, that's what the production of drama released.

I wouldn't mind watching him again, even though I couldn't bring myself to finish "Nine"and dropped it half way through.(For plot reasons, no less). I really enjoyed his performance and think he's a strong actor as well as a bona fide hottie. Looking forward to this.

I dropped it too, cause in the middle it was too depressing for me and not enough happy moments to mend my heart with. And the evil guy's acting/non-acting irked me to no end. But I do looooveeee LJW, and I thought the chemistry btwn him and the lead lady was very palpable.

He keeps getting better post-Army. His resume getting more impressive too.. Drama & Movie back to back.
I never noticed him before his Army duty. Haha. Probably because of his past drama and small supporting role here and there.
And now, he is one of my favourite Oppas.
Wonder what is happening to Hyun-bin, I want to see him back to small scree too..

Smart move, there, LJW. Stick with the folks who made you shine.
This will be awesome. Nine, and his other dramas like Air City and Spy show he has good chemistry with the males, too.
I wonder if they will manage to pull in a female lead that has a romance or if they will leave that aside like Vampire Prosecutor did.

Oh yes.
I loved Nine, I would be interested in any show with the same people behind it. More intelligently written stuff please!
And with Lee Jin Wook, my interest is through the roof too.

Wow! Lee Jin Wook is awesome. I've kept my eye on him since teh very beginning of my drama addiction. There is something approachable in him, some kind of natural, nonchallant charm, that doesn't make him a statue but a really interesting, organic character.
BUT
Not only a sageuk, but three seasons thereof? Whyyyyyy? I have never been able to sit through any sageuk miniseries. Does it mean three seasons of LJW wasted for me?

Lee Jin Wook in Joseon garb and weapons, doing frickin' Mission Impossible badassed kicking and jumping around in the air with his other two bro(-mance, here's me hoping!)s? HELL YEAH! Just don't forget to add in a (million or so?) broody shower scene, or just the three musketeers, who's clothes were stolen in the first episode, and a mission where they have to find their clothes. And for the remaining two musketeers, can we get So Ji Sub and Jung Woo (as Aramis, perhaps- the jokester)? That would make my entire calender.

YAY he is so awesome in Nine! I don't think I've ever seen him in a saguek! I can't wait to see him as a musketeer (of joseon)! And can't wait to see who else they cast! Also if Nine is any indication, we're about to get some steamy dramaland kisses...just sayin'.

Lee Jin Wook! I'm pretty much in no matter what it turns out to be. Nine was absolutely fantastic, so this should be good.
If Yong Hwa is really in this, that should be interesting. Maybe this is what he needs to get his acting career to go in a different path. I would be down to see him give it a go

Yes!! This news has made my day! Nine was fantastic and I can't wait for this. So, who would Lee Jin Wook play? Athos, Aramis, or Porthos? I'm guessing Yonghwa would be D'artagnan. I hope we get fantastic Constance and Lady de Winters.
I feel the need for a rewatch of the BBC version of The Musketeers right now.

I admit to being a conspiracy theorist!
I always found that part of Chuno and Iljimae (the return) very interesting. Oh Man Sok's Sado too was very thrilling for me as well. Now a drama that sounds like the interesting part of Chuno mixed with the thrillingness and possible martial arts of tree and baek dong soo!
I hope I'm not disappointed.
