Book giveaway: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

This is a little out of the ordinary for us here at Dramabeans, but we thought we’d offer it up to you guys anyway: We have three copies to give away of a young adult novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Korean-American author (and drama fan) Jenny Han, which features a Korean-American heroine and is centered around a contract romance.

This is not a book about K-dramas, but it sounded kinda right up our alley so girlfriday and I gave it a read and both really enjoyed it. I found it sweet and clever (I love young adult novels, I love romance, and I love dramas—the book hit my sweet spots), and we’re happy to have free copies to send your way for three interested Dramabeans readers.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before features a half-Korean high school student as the protagonist, Lara Jean; she’s the middle sister of three, and together they call themselves the “Song girls” after their mother’s surname. The plot gets going when Lara Jean’s love letters—the ones she writes to boys she’s been in love with, never intending for them to be sent—get mailed accidentally (horrors!), and what ensues is a really cute, funny story of contract dating, love triangles, bickering couples, sisterly bonding, and growing up.

Aside from the cute romance and touching family moments, I have to say I was really happy to read about a Korean heroine in a novel where her Koreanness is a clear presence without the novel being all about her being Korean, if that makes sense. And despite not having anything explicitly to do with Korean dramas, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing a few dramaland actors in the roles, thinking this would make a cute TV series.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama that includes contract dating. (Author Jenny names My Name is Kim Sam Soon as hers. I might have to pick Dal Ja’s Spring for mine, even though it only barely qualifies for contract dating.)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

Deadline: Thursday, April 17, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it was just released by Simon & Schuster today so it’s now available.

(This post is not sponsored and we weren’t given anything to do it; we just liked the book and were offered the chance to give it away to our readers. And who could complain about free books?)

It's the Prime Minister and I Are Dating for my favorite contract marriage!
Contract marriages/dating are one of my very favorite K-drama events, only because you know the minute the two involved sign that contract and hide it, it will be found and then all hell breaks loose and the blackmailing, tears, apologies to In-laws on knees and nefarious deeds ensue! Love it every time it's part of the plot.

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. Though it took me a few years before i sat down to watch it, not only did i enjoy it very much, but the drama faciliated my acceptance of Lee Seung Gi & dramas of similar nature. Such a breath of fresh air. ._.

Well, I watched Full House when it was aired in Indonesia years ago but I didn't finish yet till now.

However, I finished My Sassy Girl Chun Yang. Jae Hee and Han Chae Young suit for each other. So, it became my favorite one.

It's the first time I joined the book give away here on dramabeans.

Jenny Han! Oh my goodness, I had no idea she was Korean-American. I totally read a book of hers back in when I was in high school (I believe it was The Summer I Turned Pretty). I was totally obsessed with young adult novels throughout high school, before that fateful day in 2010 where I went k-drama and almost never came back haha. I find them similar in a way, probably because they both, in a way, offer the same kind comfort.

I know JB said it barely counts but I'm going to have to go with Dal Ja's Spring as well. Kang Tae-bong!!! He was contracted to be her fake boyfriend, I don't remember a physical contract but it has to count somehow (right?).

Thanks for this awesome opportunity!

I know this drama wasn't focused SOLELY around contract dating but the bit around Dokko Jin and Seri was a refreshing comedic kick on the topic...so I would have to go with the Greatest Love on this one :)

Full House is my favorite if only because it was the portal to my kdrama addiction.

Looking back it was quite contrived but nothing could elicit the same girlish squeals of yesteryears when these contract relationships seemed so plausible and romantic! It was the right drama at the right era of my life that allowed these flood gates of the Korean wave to wash over me!

Probably a toss up of mine between Coffee Prince (the chemistry and the banter. Love!) and Personal Taste. The latter was one of my first Kdramas and I hold a weak spot for it.

Mine is My Lovely Sam-soon. I adored this drama and it's definitely one of my favorites of all time. I loved how they actually went out of their way to write a 'contract' on a piece of napkin. lol

My second favorite would be either Delightful Girl Choon-hyung or Full House. I love how marriage came first and then love, I'm a sucker for those type of stories.

Soo many to chose from! Some though are borderline contract marriages, so not sure if they quite count like King 2 Hearts.
But, I think I'll have to go with The Prime Minister and I. I loved how both characters grew because of their interactions with each other. Except for the last few episodes, I loved how Nam Da-jung was unafraid to speak her mind and tried to change the rough relationships within his family. The creation of the contract and the contract itself was pretty funny since it was completely one-sided in favor of Kwon Yool and Nam Da-jung knew she got the short end of the stick.

Definitely My Lovely Sam Soon. It's my favourite "comfort food" drama and it made me adore Jung Ryeo Won and Hyun Bin.

I'd say the Prime Minister and I. I know that the awesomeness sadly petered out towards the end, but the first 3/4 were charming and delightful with its sweet and tender romance.

Oooh a book giveaway! I have been looking for a long time for a new good romantic comedy book to read, so I really want to check this one out and hope it doesn't disappoint.

As for my favorite contract dating drama it would definitely be between Full House and Delightful Girl Chun-Hyang. Full House was one of my first dramas and every time I re-watch I love how childish Rain acts in it and I laugh throughout it. It was also one of the first dramas I introduced to my mom causing here to fall in love with watching dramas and of course Rain too. I love Chun-Hyang too though because the female lead is so strong and caring in it and their romance journey was really sweet and funny. I love both, but if I had to choose between them, then I guess I would go with Full House just because of sentimental "first time" reasons.

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity though, and I'll be sure to check out Jenny Han's work after seeing all the compliments her books have been getting in the comments.

wow now that I think about it there r a lot of kdramas out there with contracts in them. I have to say that my favourite one would be coffee prince, even if the contract wasnt what holds them together and keeps the story going for the whole drama. Actually I prefer it that way cuz eunhye and goo yoo were so cute together and the romance was super sweet but also sincere. i am glad that books like these r being written cuz I think reading a kdrama can be just as fun and insightful as watching one :)

Does Coffee Prince count as contract dating? If so, that is definitely my favorite. I guess the first few episodes, when Eun Chan is pretending to be Han Kyul's gay boyfriend, could be considered contract dating...

Other than that, I would have to say My Lovely Sam Soon.

I pick a drama that contained a contract marriage, Ojakkyo Brothers. The second son and his wife's story was just one of the things that made this a great drama for me.

Wow, this is a tough question considering that dramaland is filled with contract dating/mariage! :P The first one that came to mind though, is delightful girl choon-hyang!

There was just something about it that made it very memorable. I loved it as an ensemble, from the comedic timing to the fiesty characters and the touching relationships (especially between choon-hyang and her father-in-law!). Definitely recommending it to those who are on the hunt for a new drama :)

Something about 1%/Anything about 1%!!!

I was too addicted to this that I printed photos and pasted it to my bedroom walls. Haha Even though it gave a happy ending to all characters, it was a feel-good drama. Kang Dong Won was also a cutie! (wishing he would be back on tv huhu)

FULL HOUSE! It's my introduction to korean dramas and the reason why I'm additicted. I've watched it countless times, especially when I'm down or stressed. It somehow made me forget everyday problems at home or at work.

It never failed to amuse me. The antics and bickering between Rain and Song Hye Gyo, their "Three Bears Dance", and the grandmother visit which made me tear up with laughter.

"My Girl" is probably my all-time favorite contract family member k-drama. (I wish I could choose it as my #1, but I'm not sure it counts.)

And while I really liked "My Lovely Kim Sam Soon", because the female protagonist is definitely far from the typical delicate thin beauty and because it took place in a bakery, I have to admit the over-the-top, makjang-filled, cliche-subverting nature of "Bride of the Century" definitely gets first place for me as my #1 contract dating/marriage kdrama. There's never a slow episode and the schemes and counter-schemes between the cunning prospective ahjumma in-laws provide the plot twists that kept me guessing and left me very entertained. And there's still just enough room for the romantic and comedic beats in order to not completely bog us down with too much angsty makjang. Granted, the supernatural element could be played better and the male lead looks far too baby-faced to play CEO, but the good points of the drama make me shrug those questionable bits away. It helps that the male lead and female lead have great chemistry too. I don't know but I just really love this drama.

Although I'm a bit confused. Is this drama currently airing? It's not in the side-panel of this website as currently airing and the other sites I checked didn't provide much clues. Does anyone know?
