Mi-rae’s Choice: Episode 15

I’m… still not sure as to what exactly happened in this penultimate episode; it rather feels like I plummeted into a supermassive black hole and ended up in a different universe with disengaged characters who hold grudges even after learning the truth and an assumption of each other’s feelings lets rumors fly about the workplace and beyond.

Our resident time-traveler still withholds information even to the day that marks Shin’s potential downfall, which makes me wonder if she should have planned this whole time-travel thing a little better. Then one last tidbit comes flying out of left field, and no—it’s not the 4.7% ratings this episode clocked in at because, well, we kinda already knew that was gonna happen.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

Se-joo belatedly reveals himself to be Mi-rae’s savior, explaining that he simply wanted to approach her as a man, nothing more. With that, he asks her to accept his feelings. At her silence, he slips the ring on to her finger and hugs her.

Having signed the contract, Shin shows up to work at NTN the next day. He overhears a few employees arguing, but the pretty VP tells him not to worry about it and leads him into his swanky new office.

Se-joo hits yet another roadblock in his plans, so he seeks Grandma’s help with acquiring investments. She notices the ring on his finger (couple rings, perhaps?) and agrees to help, on the grounds that he marries the girl of her choice.

He isn’t keen on that idea, and Grandma warns him that although she can overlook the idea of dating Mi-rae, marriage is out of the question. Se-joo tells his grandmother in a gentle yet firm voice that it has to be Mi-rae.

Ajumma Mi-rae meets with Oppa to fill him in on how she nearly returned to the future, only to learn that nothing in her future changes if she returns and that she and Mi-rae are considered two different entities.

Oppa tries to wrap his head around the parallel universes theory, which basically points to the notion that there are multiple universes and versions of the self that exist parallel to one another. Therefore this present could lead to an entirely different future than Ajumma’s (which would make sense since Mi-rae has made different choices from her future self).

Ajumma panics at this, and grabs her phone to warn Mi-rae, but Oppa reminds her that doing so won’t change anything. He suggests that they keep this truth between themselves for now.

Mi-rae is up to her ears in work when she’s called in to see Chairman Lee. She tugs at her sleeve to hide the ring, but the chairman has already seen it and plainly tells her to quit her job and marry Se-joo.

Mi-rae shifts uncomfortably at that since she hasn’t even discussed the topic with Se-joo at all. The way the chairman emphatically voices her approval of Mi-rae is certainly odd, and we later learn that they’re merely empty words to try and scare her off.

Shin goes on air for his first broadcast as the NTN main anchorman. Mi-rae watches the first few minutes at home with a glum expression, and then turns in early for the night when Oppa and Ajumma walk in moments later.

He’s led to a classy CEO gathering afterward by the pretty VP, whom we’ll have to introduce sooner or later as Hee-kyung. This get-together is also a mini family reunion because the two supposedly rival corporate groups are actually in-laws.

Pointing to two seats next to her father, she notes that one is hers while the other is still empty. Er, so you’re trying to introduce him as a possible son-in-law when you’re not even dating. O-kay.

Shin sits down with the chairman to ask why he’s even being considered for his daughter given his lack of prestigious background. The chairman says plainly that he doesn’t need any more of those prosecutor or political types in the family; rather he wants a fresh face to show how open-minded of a chaebol family they are to, you know, the common folk.

Being used like a charity case isn’t what Shin had in mind, but the chairman answers that he’s simply opened the door—it’s up to Shin to walk through or not.

They run into Chairman Lee as they’re leaving, which eek—that’s awkward. She throws a few thinly veiled barbs in Shin’s direction before warning the NTN chairman that even a trained dog can bite its owner’s hand when hungry.

Mi-rae confronts Se-joo at work about the rumors floating around the workplace that they’re engaged, which really shouldn’t come as a surprise if you two are blatantly wearing couple rings everywhere.

That’s news to Se-joo and he laughs it off until it occurs to him that it’s not such a bad idea after all, and he asks her to sincerely consider getting engaged for real. The mention of Grandma nearly has Mi-rae bring up her earlier chat with her, but she holds her tongue.

Mi-rae then ends up in the same elevator as Yoo-kyung, who finds it strange that Ajumma is still around. The sight of the couple ring makes Yoo-kyung momentarily hesitate before explaining matter-of-factly how she was in a car accident with Shin the same day Mi-rae was in Jeju.

There’s no malice in her voice as she adds that if things went as intended, it could have been her who met Se-joo that day.

Mi-rae sits down her brother to inform him that she’ll be transferring jobs soon; she’ll only be known as either his little sister or Se-joo’s girlfriend if she stays here. Her main reason is to establish her career on her own, and Oppa grumbles a little before telling her that he’ll be away for a couple of days, refusing to give any details as to why.

At home Mi-rae asks Ajumma if she’s been travelling without her knowledge. Ajumma denies it, and then notices the couple ring when Mi-rae takes a call from Se-joo.

Given his exhausted voice, it seems like he’s had another rough day and asks Mi-rae to accompany him tonight and dress up. As Mi-rae dolls herself up, she’s reminded of how she prepped for her last date.

When they arrive, Mi-rae asks if they’re attending one of those fancy parties where the rich talk about boring things like stocks and the economy. Se-joo admits that he was afraid she wouldn’t have come if she’d known, but she smiles instead, saying that she’s curious about his chaebol friends.

….which includes Hee-kyung, who’s brought Shin with her. Well that’s not awkward or anything. She’s surprised to hear that Shin and Mi-rae were former co-workers, and Se-joo introduces Mi-rae as his girlfriend, making sure to flash those couple rings in front of Shin.

A little later, Hee-kyung is pleasantly amused at the rumored soon-to-be engaged couple, adding that they look good together. Then she tosses out the same question to their neighbors and beams to hear that they do.

Meanwhile, one of Se-joo’s friends mentions how there’s talk that Shin is in the running to take over NTN thanks to Hee-kyung.

Distracted, both Shin and Mi-rae excuse themselves to get some air. They end up at the same rooftop and exchange awkward greetings, and then Shin congratulates her on her upcoming engagement, words that make Mi-rae fiddle with her ring.

Mi-rae asks if he met with Hee-kyung on their night of their Christmas Eve date. Shin confirms it, saying that he was initially scouted but remains vague about their current relationship status.

That allows Mi-rae to assume that they’re dating, and she replies that they look good together, a compliment that Shin simply accepts. Bahh.

It’s only after she leaves first that Shin covers his eyes to hold back his tears.

Ajumma greets Mi-rae when she gets home and immediately clocks her gloomy mood. Mi-rae thanks her future self because Shin looks happier now than ever, and Ajumma lets out a troubled sigh.

Oppa leaves for his vaycay to the hospital, which leaves Ajumma in a tizzy worrying about who might take care of Oppa when she’s stuck in the house because the Black Man could come after her.

So Oppa is shocked when he arrives at his room to see Shin already waiting there. HA, that got me to laugh. They’re just as lovingly abrasive to each other with their usual bickering. When Shin asks if he heard any future developments about the cancer from Ajumma, Oppa answers that they apparently cut ties five years from now.

Shin dutifully waits outside the operating room while Ajumma paces about in worry at home. She slips outside past the Black Man in a distracted moment.

Meanwhile Mi-rae talks to one of her bosses at work about a work matter after being unable to get in contact with her brother. That’s when she learns about Oppa’s cancer relapse and that he’s at the hospital, not on vacation.

She runs out in tears as she puts the pieces together in her head, and then calls Ajumma, demanding to know what hospital he’s in.

I love how annoyed Oppa gets when he wakes from surgery to Shin’s face. He’s surprised to see Ajumma next to him and sighs deeply to hear that Mi-rae knows everything and is on her way.

Shin takes that as his signal to leave, but Ajumma stops him and looks back at Oppa, who turns his head.

They relocate to chat where Shin is astounded to hear about the whole parallel universes theory and how he’s not necessarily destined to end up married to Mi-rae, financially ruined, and lose a child.

Ajumma braces herself before admitting that it’s all her fault and sincerely apologizes. Shin asks if Mi-rae knows, and Ajumma says she doesn’t even know where to start.

He asks why she’s telling him everything then, and Ajumma says that he and Mi-rae still have feelings for each other. But it’s too little, too late now and Shin says that even if he doesn’t know whether the future will change, he can’t change the pain he’s caused Mi-rae in the present.

It’s possible that he can end up hurting Mi-rae more than the other Kim Shin. He believes that Se-joo can make her happy, and tells her to keep this truth a secret from her.

Mi-rae runs in shortly afterwards and cries hysterically over Oppa’s hospital bed until he finally snaps at her: “I’m in recovery! I have to rest!” HA.

It’s cute how she fusses over him, and when Ajumma returns, Mi-rae asks why she didn’t take Oppa to the hospital earlier. Ajumma truthfully answers that she only learned about Oppa’s stomach cancer when she got here.

Mi-rae takes that to mean that Oppa eventually recovered in the future and cries tears of relief. But given how Oppa and Ajumma share a knowing look, we can assume that he wasn’t so lucky (in that other timeline. Oy, confused yet?).

Elsewhere Yoo-kyung sits through a thoroughly boring drunken ironic rant about manners while setting out utensils for the all-male crew. She’s finally had enough this time and slams down the box in annoyance.

She gives the PD a piece of her mind about practicing some manners himself before storming out with a smile on her face. Good for you.

Se-joo wraps up a business dinner and dismisses his secretary for the night to take a nightly stroll. He smiles to see a family eating out together, and then calls Mi-rae, who doesn’t pick up.

He walks into the same restaurant where Yoo-kyung happens to be in and teasingly pulls a pickup line which makes her sigh exasperatedly, and then turns around to see Se-joo. Heh.

He asks about the brochures in her hand and learns that Yoo-kyung plans to study journalism overseas on a scholarship. He offers to help her family out while she’s away, but she insists there’s no need since her brother will soon be in the army and her mother will stay with relatives.

She’ll earn money for her own expenses while giving the scholarship funds to her mother. She’s not sure if she’ll come back to Korea or not, and apologizes that she won’t be able to see him get engaged (well, officially, since she’s referring to a formal engagement party).

At the hospital, Mi-rae drops by the nurses station where they wonder if her brother works in broadcasting because they recognized Shin.

Mi-rae works up the courage to call Shin to thank him for taking care of Oppa before the surgery. He says it was nothing, and Mi-rae hears Hee-kyung’s voice before hanging up.

Oh, how cute—Mi-rae prepares a welcome back party for Oppa at work, complete with balloons and flowers. Their high spirits dampen when they hear that Mi-rae is leaving, but misinterpret it as a celebratory party for her engagement instead.

Shin is approached by the same pair of reporters who argued with their boss at the beginning of the episode, asking him to do an expose on a corporate group that sells humidifiers that contain a toxic ingredient that leads to illness with continued use.

The corporate group in question is an in-law to the NTN chairman and the idea rejected by other networks. Shin tells them to come back with solid evidence.

Mi-rae grows curious one morning when she sees a man wearing a sandwich board about the same issue. His son died of lung cancer because of the humidifier’s effects and in the end, the corporation admitted no fault nor provided compensation.

The man simply wants justice for his son’s untimely death, but no one is willing to stand up for the issue. He asks that Mi-rae get his story known. So Mi-rae shows up at her new job and pitches the idea to her boss, who suggests that she at least interview the man first.

Mi-rae spots the pair of NTN reporters when she heads out again and brightens to hear that the story will be covered. But her face falls when she hears Shin will be reporting it. Uh oh.

Worried, Mi-rae calls Ajumma to ask about the events leading up to Shin’s downfall and gets annoyed when Ajumma doesn’t give her a straight answer. I especially like how Mi-rae questions how she’s always being told what to do but never gets an explanation.

She has to practically pry the information out of Ajumma, who again doesn’t recall exactly what happened apart from the fact that Shin was fired after covering an expose which also coincided with the start of a reporters’ protest. Mi-rae: “Is that today?”

That takes Mi-rae to the NTN building where the aforementioned protest takes place and runs into Shin.

Shin responds warning with cold indifference at the warning that he’ll be fired if he covers that particular story. He asks if she’s asking him to compromise his principles to save his own skin and if she’ll take responsibility if he takes it up with his bosses.

She finds his words harsh, but resignedly agrees that perhaps it’s not her place to worry about him anymore. Shin lashes out at her concern and tells her not to interfere in other people’s affairs. Uh, shouldn’t you be directing those words at Ajumma, not Mi-rae?

Ajumma Mi-rae grows wary when a package arrives at the house. She cautiously accepts it when the deliveryman (another Black Man in disguise) grabs her. She screams for dear life, ignoring his insistence that someone is waiting for her in the future.

But then she gapes when the deliveryman tells her: “Kim Shin is alive.” What, you have GOT to be kidding me. It’s just a line to get her to comply, right? She faints in shock.

Mi-rae yells in fright to see the pair of Black Men beside an unconscious Ajumma in her living room. She’s utterly confused to be told that not only is Ajumma in danger in this universe, but also they are in fact, two different Mi-raes.

Mi-rae is still confused when they take Ajumma to the hospital and tells her brother that the Black Men can’t take Ajumma back when she’s unconscious, but she won’t wake up.

Here I’m thinking the pair of Black Men could have taken her to the hospital themselves since the time-travel rules are so willy nilly anyway, but Se-joo comes to join the party too because why not. Apart from fatigue, the doctors don’t know what’s wrong.

Meanwhile, the pair of reporters appeal their case to Shin minutes before the broadcast and presents him with their own written copy of the script. Shin places both scripts on the newsdesk in front of him, contemplating which one to read from.

COMMENTS

To be honest, I don’t even know where to start, but someone once told me that it’s always best to start at the beginning, so shall we? With Se-joo’s confession, I do appreciate that he was honest in saying that he didn’t want Mi-rae to be burdened by the idea that he saved her life, though the revelation does bring pressure in of itself. Still, Mi-rae still had a choice to accept or reject his feelings… and said nothing, which is what grates at my nerves. Then we see her wear the ring for the rest of the hour at home, at the workplace, and to meet Grandma and she wonders why people are whispering that they’re a soon-to-be-engaged couple when they’re dating. At least, I think they are since Se-joo calls her his girlfriend.

Even then, she chooses to let assumption breed rumors among everyone, perhaps hanging on the notion that she’s finally taking part of Ajumma’s Master Plan, which we already know to be useless, but I’ll get there. Unfortunately Se-joo also climbs aboard this gossip train since he thinks an engagement is a good idea, which might make that moment the lamest proposal in recent memory. Don’t get me wrong—he’s sweet, genuine, and nice on paper, but to throw in the towel once and then let others assume that they’re about to be engaged (which Basketball would know so well), that’s pretty confusing, no?

Speaking of supposed pre-engagements, Shin also has a hazy professional relationship with Hee-kyung, who’s dropped hints of romantic interest that he’s drawn a firm line at before. Now he’s a potential marriage candidate to a woman he’s… not dating, then he also lets Mi-rae assume that he has someone in his life. I can hope that his strong principles might keep him from pursuing a romantic relationship with Hee-kyung and allow himself to be the poster boy who married rich, but who knows when all’s fair in love and war.

Then Shin remains frustratingly vague during the eleventh hour and he still directs his misguided anger at Mi-rae even after learning that she and Ajumma Mi-rae are two different people and that he’s not destined to the same fate as the Kim Shin that Ajumma once married. At this point, I’m inclined to believe that he’s keeping Mi-rae at a distance to drag this final conflict to the last possible minute when I’ll be the one thinking that it’s too little, too late. It’s something I don’t want for Shin, whose head is filled with the knowledge of his own future and Mi-rae’s which we now know could lead to an infinite number of possibilities that don’t necessarily have to follow Ajumma Mi-rae’s timeline.

So if we follow the notion of parallel universes/multiverse theory (and be forewarned: I can’t guarantee that it will make any sense), Shin can still change his mind and make a different decision that opens himself and everyone else up to a different future. And if the time-travel rules are so flexible anyhow and it takes two Black Men to bring one time-traveler back, then why not?

It’s a pity that Ajumma Mi-rae’s character ended up as a conflict device for much of this series where she had nearly everybody fooled, including herself. Her apologies do come far too late in this alternaverse, and it somehow still doesn’t occur to her that her continuous participation in this reality brings harm to everyone and herself. I’m not quite sure what to make of this last-minute declaration that the other Kim Shin is still alive, when we were led to think that he had died in the other timeline, but Mi-rae’s Choice, you’ve got one more hour to show me that you can turn this time machine around.

Thank you for the recap. I have been waiting patiently because I was wondering how this mess is going to end. However, I am not desperate enough to watch the episodes. I stopped watching at ep 2. Thank you for your sacrifice.

This drama... I absolutely cannot deal. The haphazard plotlines that come at the most random moments. What, Kim Shin's alive after thinking he was dead this whole time? And huh, Ahjumma MR isn't MR from the future and we're supposed to be convinced because of some quick Google/wikipedia definition?

Sigghhh... I'm just ready for this to be done with. Watching MR and SJ, or rather just SJ carry along on this painful, one-sided relationship makes me cringe. Him calling her all episode made me roll my eyes. I mean does this dude ever do any real work?

Everyone in this drama except YK is tiring to watch. They all seem so one-dimensional, especially MR. How sad. The female lead character has less dimension than the second. It's been a while since I've watched something like this.

At this point, it doesn't matter who she ends up with... come quickly, episode 16. So I can move on.

All the characters had great potential but most of them were wasted. Only Oppa and YK seemed to have shown realistic progress/growth as characters. Oppa went from crankypants to doting while YK went from lobbying to acting with self-preservation. KS, MR, and SJ were only used to fuel a love triangle that was very annoying and unnecessary.

YK is the only one left that I am rooting for now. I bet if all the other characters suddenly got amnesia and we followed only her for the last part it would be a better show.

Ahjumma Mi Rae both is and is not Mi Rae from the future: until she came back, she was this Mi Rae, 20 years later. The act of coming back and changing her past (or arguably, just coming back at all) creates a break in their connection and thus, a parallel universe is born.

No, the way I understood it, the show was saying that there are multiple parallel universes and in one of them Mirae got into an accident with Shin, married him, and then lost him to suicide after her kid dies. This universe had a time machine which she used to transport herself into another parallel universe that doesn't necessarily have the same future (meaning this universe could have been a happy version where Shin and Mirae are married and happily successful). And this is where things get super confusing because this whole theory doesn't even work out. In PU2 (parallel universe #2 containing present Mirae), the past works out exactly the same as in PU1 in that you still have Shin and Mirae indisputably falling in love with each other, Shin's personality is still inflexible, and Shin still ending up working for NTN....the three very things that led to Ajhumma's misery in her universe. So why the show is trying to say now that PU2 most likely had a different future and Ajhumma screwed that up is beyond me. It's like the writer is trying to make Ajhumma seem like a sympathetic character by painting her as ignorant ("I didn't know this is how the time-travelling was going to work!") when in reality, the writer made her a pretty dumb character with insufficient/improper reasons for her meddling actions. Ajhumma was this show's source of conflict but she was unfortunately, the biggest flaw too. Because of that, the conflict itself is flawed and so the whole drama sucks.

Dear Present Mi-rae,

If you have to sulk, mope, and look depressed everytime people discuss your relationship with Se-Joo, you are reminded of the ring, the possibility of an engagement with Se-Joo, etc.

As a 32 year old woman you should know how to say No.

As a writer, you should know how to assemble words in order to express yourself, how to get your point across to the other person, and you should have an extensive vocabulary.

Let me give you some examples of the simplest and most direct way to say NO:

“No, I can’t.”

“I can’t commit to you Se-Joo at this time...My priority at the moment is to become a successful writer.”

“Now’s not a good time for me Se-Joo. I’m in the midst of still trying to get over Kim Shin."

“Let me think about it first and I’ll get back to you.”

“I’m not the best person for you Se-Joo right now. Why don’t you try Seo Yoo-Kyung?”

In an earlier episode, did you not tell Future Mi-rae that you do not want to depend solely on a man?

I know, right?

I really tried to watch these last episodes with a positive attitude, but this was such a sticking point for me. In a show originally called "Mirae's Choice," how did the titular character end up being the most passive person in the piece? Why does she have to go along with Se-Joo's maneuvers acting like an abused wife with no choice?

I mean, he should know that she isn't interested, but she should have been firm with him. I guess that would have taken away all the "conflict" from this episode.

Maybe the "real" Park Se-Joo was in Episodes 1 - 14 (minus the last few seconds with the ring proposal). It seems that he was kidnapped and replaced in Episode 15.

Will the "real" Park Se-Joo reappear and "Please Stand Up" (** referencing "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem**) in Episode 16?

Heh. I like that explanation.

You know, as much as people love to rag on Se-Joo -which I can definitely understand based on this episode, and the ring proposal from the last one- people forget how genuinely nice he was to present Mirae at first. He was the first one who helped integrate her into the team at YBS. He helped her with the technical aspects of the job, and supported her without being a lemming. It's sad how badly the writers tanked with him after a while.

Yeah, Se-joo was interesting in the beginning but when he started saying things like, "Mirae must not know I'm a chaebol because she's too pure for that," or some nonsense like that, I knew his character was being tanked. The amount of time the writer spent on making him pine after Mirae could've been spent on making him a better character with a cute love story with Yoo Kyung. Gah, so much lost potential.

LOL'd at that!! :D It's so, so true. Poor EYH - this drama's turning out to be more "I Miss You" than "Lie to Me".

I knew we were in trouble when they'd freeze the scene at the end of each frustrating episode and we'd get that melancholy draggy song on endless repeat... It's not a show about alternative timelines - it's a show about a broken record!!

That said, I'm in it till the bitter end ... please, show, just give Oppa and Shin a happy ending together? They're the only people I care about right now. At this point, I'm more emotionally invested in Medical Top Team than in MHIYD. :(

Swept away by you
And now I feel like a fool
So confused,
My heart's bruised
Was I ever loved by you?

Out of reach, so far
I never had your heart
Out of reach,
Couldn't see
We were never
Meant to be

I know right? Its' so easy, so why does the writer make it so hard. The proposal and every scene after of theirs looks like Mirae would rather go die than be there with him. But she says nothing at all.

she keep him on strings and doesn't cut it off
SJ is a lovesick puppy that brain can't function well because overdose of overwhelming feelings and longing for MR, of course with MR accepting him and all won't make him realized the need to stay away from her

What. The. Hell.

Okay, I'm reeeaaallly confused. When they were talking about parallel universes in previous episodes, I thought it meant that FMR went back in time, created a change (preventing an accident and taking Mirae to Jeju) which caused a divergent timeline wherein FMR will remain FMR with her past and all, but Mirae herself was going to have a changed future based on the changes made. So now what are they talking about? Ajhumma went back in time to a different timeline than hers?? Does that even make sense considering it was still her past as well??

Wow, this show really went ridiculous. And seriously, Kim Shin being alive after all this time...in a world with a time machine, how can they not even know that?? I'm so speechless.

I think what the show is saying is that when Future MR went back in time she split her timeline into 2 timelines (aka parallel universes). So timeline 1 is the timeline she has already lived; is unchangeable and fixed. Her past cannot be changed. Timeline 2 is where Young MR met a strange lady; its past is also fixed, but it has a future that is full of possibilities. Thus YMR is a COMPLETELY different person than FMR. FMR didn't meet her younger self, she met a different MR altogether.

(some parallel universe theory would say that there could possibly be infinite different timelines. There could be multiple timelines where: the child didn't die; FMR doesn't time travel; YMR ends up with JS; YMR ends up with Shin: YMR ends up with neither. There are probably even universes where lightning didn't strike Namsam Tower. We are just looking at the lives of 2 different MR out of infinite possible MR)

The main point is that there is no time travel allowed. Only alternate universe hopping.

In an earlier episode, we learn that Kim Shin committed suicide. In this episode, we find out that Kim Shin is still alive in Future Mi-rae's universe? Please explain...

0

@ Anduril:

I get what you're saying and to some extent I agree but please see my comment #2.2.1 as my response to you too.

I would also add that FMR didn't meet a different Mirae than her actual younger self. Her YMR is the exact same YMR as the one in the 2nd alternative universe. She only turned out different because FMR meddled into her life. So no, I don't buy that there are all these different Miraes. It doesn't compute in my head with the way this story was constructed, lol.

0

having watched episode 16 it seems like there is definitely some time travel elements and possible parallel universe elements. And no real attempt to mesh them.

My new theory, the writer is changing her mind about the rules each episode and there is no logic to be found.

Wow this is all I need to know whether or not I should continue watching the show - I'm stuck at episode 7. And it SUCKS because I do love Present Mi-rae and the choices that she made up to the point when I was watching, as well as the tension between her and Se-joo and her and Shin's growing love. My interest started waning because Future Mi-rae was getting to me with her petty I insist you have a different future, and now it turns out that she went on a different timeline anyway (WTF). To introduce this at this stage of the drama was a complete waste of plot just to get the love triangle going. I think it would've worked if the rules of time travel were much, much clearer on this drama and it turns out it was not.

I'll just remember the drama up to that point, no need to follow thru. What promise this drama had, though. *sob*

Stopping at episode 7 is probably a good thing for you....you'll mostly have good memories of the drama instead of the lame ones, lol. 'Cause trust me, Mirae progressed but by this point has reverted to her former weak self. All because of wuv. And the tension you enjoyed formerly would become such a pain in the neck.

The writing totally sucks.
In eps 1-4, SJ is made into this perfect guy, and Shin a cold asshole. Why spend 4 eps portraying them as such if the show means to make young MR reject SJ and fall for Shin? It gives viewers a hard time to ship the OTP. By ep 6 or so, when Shin starts to show signs of being a decent human being, we're already 1/3 into the show. It feels like bait-and-switch, which shouldn't be.
Ajumma is irritating in more ways than one. Ok, she provides conflict, but the way she does makes no sense. And the men in black! It'd be fine if they were comic relief. Are they part of the scenery? Hell, I've no idea what they are!
Young MR comes across as one inconsistent, confused woman. Who'd want to follow such an heroine for 20 eps?
Time travel? Parallel universe? Please. It is this kind of show that gives sci-fi and time-travel stories a BAD name!
And to think that ppl kept praising this show (when they ditched on Heirs).

Funny you mention certain things. I actually started having trouble with this show the moment Kim Shin had a random and sudden change in personality towards Mirae after having an alternate-universe dream when the Time Cop/Guide/Whatever-He-Is first entered the picture. It made no sense whatsoever to me but because the story still seemed in its early stages and full of potential, I figured I could get over it and follow through, trusting an explanation would appear later (it never did). In fact, Shin and Mirae's budding romance never made sense to me except that because they had so much chemistry they managed to sell it to me. I mean, seriously, that scene with Shin sewing Mirae's costume had me adoring this OTP and stashing away all nagging doubts.

So yeah, the writing was sub-par. It has too many contradictions. I think it deserved some praise in the beginning despite some troubling things but after ep 6/7, it really went on a downhill.

LDG and YEH are good actors; that's the only reason the show managed to sell the OTP to the extent that it did. And Yong Hwa did well too. As the comments below show, ppl who have seen the finale are even more thoroughly disappointed.

Everyone is saying it is an epic fail, a wasted opportunity. The fault lies squarely on the shoulders of the writer. The story is ill-conceived, half-baked, lacks direction, or rather meanders and changes direction. My, is it ever frustrating to follow.

Qn is: How on earth do writers of this calibre get to sell their 'ideas' to producers, who then get LDG and YEH aboard, which then sells the project to a Big 3 (KBS)?

It really is a sad state of affairs that talent has to sign on the dotted line before they've any inkling what kind of train wreck the show that they agree to star in can end up being. It tarnishes their track record, which is completely unfair to them. And yet, the writer gets to sell their "work" again! Even fanfic is better than IS! This is by no means the first or last time such travesty happens tho.

I had such high hopes for this drama because Yoon Eun Hye is in it. Before it aired, I counted the days to the first episode - i could barely wait. And now, I just want to get it over and done with. I don't wanna say I hated it, but there's just something about it that didn't quite nail it for me. I guess that's what happens when you present people with a show that has limitless possibilities.

And can they get YEH, LDG and JYH to join her, and do an alternate drama in a different timeline?

I decided to skip watching this episode and to just read the recap. I will brave myself for the finale. Sejoo went from a sweet and understanding second lead, to a pushy second lead who cannot take a hint. In other words, he followed the trajectory of many a second-male lead. *Sigh* And I am frustrated at Mirae's lack of agency. She gets pushed around and remains passive. And I hate how others hide things from her because of what they believe she can or cannot handle and because of what they think is best for her. Where is her choice? Where is her free will?

I was ok with this show sorta until this episode, because it is when I realized that NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN (unless you count me flipping a table). How is this even a romantic comedy? Where's the romance? Where's the comedy?

Mirae and Kim Shin barely even have any scenes together. In the last few episodes, I felt like this was more the Se Joo show, and frankly, he's had huge personality change since episode 13 so I hate this version of him and do not like spending time with him and Miranda and Future Mirae.

In retrospect, I kind of wish this had been a drama about YK instead. She was the heroine that did the most growing and found herself and MADE CHOICES. Mirae is letting choices happen to her!

And ugh, what wasted chemistry between Yoo Eun-Hye and Lee Dong-Gun. In the very few scenes they have together, I can feel the heartbreak and the chemistry and it irritates me so much that that's all they've gotten.

I am beginning to think that one early signs of writer or drama failure is the people start to get more interested in the secondary characters than the leads. I see that happening here and in Heirs.

I think that YK is the real heroine in this drama. Even from the start, she did it all herself, and unlike Mi Rae did not have to be forcibly kicked out of a rut. And she did it all without being stupid or mean.

Does anyone think that due to low ratings the network forced the writer to feature SJ more, thinking that the YH idol fan base would help lift ratings? That or the writer just kinda sucked the life out of her own drama?

I don't know what really happened but this script is definitely changed! it doesn't make sense anymore! the writer just through ideas without clearing anything or tying the loose ends!

I don't think LDG and YEH would have accepted this role if they knew it leads to this disastrous trainwreck! I think they were mugged by this script! and all of us of course!

There were plently of fans watching Mi-rae's Choice (AKA MHIYD) just to see the pairing of Yoon Eun-Hye and Lee Dong-Gun in a kdrama together.

Wouldn't pandering by the network to the fanbase of Jung Yong-Hwa actually increase ratings instead of decreasing them? The network is not new to the game when it comes to marketing its kdramas. Personally, I don't think it had anything to do with the idol fanbase of Jung Yong-Hwa.

If anything, the writer Hong Jin-Ah, probably wrote herself into a corner regarding the actual time travel conundrum and the eventual OTP/romantic lead pairing. Instead, Hong Jin-Ah's strength, focus, and efforts for most of the drama was towards writing the complex layers and the strength/weaknesses for each of the four main characters.

Hong Jin-Ah probably wavered, became indecisive, and more uncertain after reaching the halfway point of the drama until the end about the eventual "romantic male lead" for Present Mi-rae?

Most of the episodes seemed to reflect that regardless of what happened or didn't happen, Mi-rae only had eyes for and pined for Kim Shin. The two "romantic leads" were never on equal footing in the romance and mutual attraction department for Na Mi-rae. However, the majority of the behind the scenes (BTS) footage and photo stills released constantly to the public were mostly of Mi-rae & Se-Joo.

So when the photo still was released each week promoting the next episode and the viewer actually watched the next episode...it hardly ever added up! Not the best way to maintain and attract viewers.

Well let's say they did it--that also doesn't guarantee that ratings would rise, though. Or, we could argue that if they did try this, it was YH's fans who kept the ratings at 4%--maybe it would have dropped even more otherwise! Food for thought.

I just think that SJ is featuring more because conflict itself was very flimsy and so keeping SJ "clinging" onto Mirae continuously will stretch out the conflict even more until the happily ever after happens. If it does even happen.

I hope that's not the case (that early signs of writer or drama failure is the people start to get more interested in the secondary characters than the leads)! Because I almost always like secondary characters more than leads (although less in dramas compared to books or manga), and I'd hate to think that that's because I'm really really hard to please writing-wise.

On the other hand, I agree completely with the commentary on YK. I honestly adore her, and am really glad she's getting far, far away from the mess of the other three (although I do hope that they sort that out too).

True, the moments that Mirae and Shin had together were compelling and filled with chemistry. Once they began drifting apart, then even the drama became bland. I am still not sure what happened to this show. It started out with such promise, and then just kind of slipped into it's own alternate universe. The last few episodes are almost like a train wreck morphed into the sinking of the Titanic. I guess the writer knows it has some real problems, otherwise we would not be getting these random out-of-left-field (or left-timeline) plot devices that make no sense.

Episode 16 will start with Shin getting out of the shower, very much alive. And everything will be explained (ala Dallas tv show in the 70's) with him saying to Mirae, played by Yoon Eun-Hye (with her straight hair) as he's walking out of the bathroom, towels wrapped around his waist (yes. You know who I put that in for, more abs.) "Wow, yobo. I just had the wildest dream! You were in it, except you had ajumma hair. And it didn't make ANY SENSE at all, because we did stupid stuff for no reason."
"Well, I was thinking of getting a perm," Mirae coos from underneath the covers.
"Aigo. Never!" calls Shin. We see the towel drop to the floor and the covers ripple. The happy couple kisses and the screen dims. (Yeah, this is PG.)

I also wish they'd done more with those wonderful "memory" scenes that Kim Shin was having about Mi-Rae after Ahjumma had interrupted their "destined" romance. I wish they'd stuck with them, rather than changing the rules as they went along. Did the writer have a brain transplant during the middle of the show?

This episode confused me to the max. I have never been this confused about a drama in my life and I mean it's a drama not a math problem. There were too many stuff going on between the love square, oppas cancer, kim shin's work problem and the men in black... anyway

I have to say I'm surprised Yoo-kyung got over SJ so fast. Normally, the second lead is always plotting to get the main guy and is all evil and scheming and delusional because they haven't understood yet that the person they like doesn't like them...basically they are obsessed. Here Yoo-kyung acted like a normal person : she tried to get with him, got sad that it didn't work, cried and moved on. If she acted so normal then why do I feel like it's weird? I think it's because she acts like nothing ever happened.

The whole future/parallel world should have come up in the middle of the drama not when there are only 2 episodes left... well actually only one episode left.

well, the plot loopholes are huge. With the final episode next, God knows how they are going to bring a closure to this mayhem. However, i dont agree with Mirae, the titular character, as being reduced to a passive subservient pushover. Mirae's choice is about indecision. How very often theres no clear choice. and even if theres a clear choice, how very often it is clouded by our perceptions, needs, desires. A 32 yr old woman is faced with the prospect of marrying a chaebol who loves her even though she loves another man!! Is that an easy choice?? A 30 something Shin has the opportunity to climb up d social ladder by marrying a heiress. Is that an easy choice? lets face it, how principled we may all claim it, we will all be swayed, at least momentarily, by dynamics of power, economics and of course, comfort. In extending her moment of indecisiveness, Mirae is just exercising her freedom of will and choice.

Honestly, I can't even tell who the male lead character is... Maybe both Se Joo and Kim Shin are equal in this type of nonsensical drama. I mean, I thought it was obvious from the beginning but because of KS' noble idiocy, SJ stepped to the forefront and took over every scene...

If we think of them as equal male leads, maybe I won't be so frustrated about how this entire drama is drawing to a close. I honestly watched this drama because of Lee Dong Gun, not gonna lie. Missed seeing him. So I'm very disappointed that he barely showed up except staring pitifully at MR from a distance. It's just so sad. So very sad.

I would wish for a few more episodes to clear things up, to restore order to this very chaotic and discombobulated plot, but that'd be like beating a dead horse over and over. It's pretty much done, so I guess I can hold my breath and wait for it to be... over. I'm ready anyhow. Let's get this over with.

There's something you seemed not to have understood about Kim Shin and his relation with his new boss, Hee Kyung and her father. Its implied that they are basically gonna force him to marry her to improve their image and he cant say no because of the contract fees. That is what Hee Kyung's father talks about that when he says opening the door for him. The somehow forced him into this position where the wedding is indirectly included in the contract.

At least its what I understood.

I am not one to require that each conclusion be simply spelled out, but to throw in "total disconnect" at the end made me angry, disappointed and downright mourning the time I wasted. I expected so much more because of the great cast. I still like them all but please, if Na Mi Rae is going to make a choice, make a better one.

I need to add that the last episode had one redeeming event -- Joon Hwa's super haircut. So cool.

Ok I could not wait for the last episode recap to say what I want to say so I will say it here. After watching some melodramas, I decided I wanted to go for a lighthearted drama with a good ending so I started watching this drama and boy was I wrong. I stuck till the end because I thought it would all work out in the final episode, but I guess not.

I do not even understand why SJ would be a choice considering she never showed any sign of liking him.

Continued...

[spoiler deleted -gm]
The endings I hate the most in dramas are the deaths of the main characters or open endings. I mean if I wanted to imagine the ending for myself and they want to leave me the choice of choosing the ending I like best I would just not watch dramas and write my own stories. I'd rather have a cheesy ending with a full blown wedding than an open ending.
I have to say although the ending was bad nothing is worst that fashion king.
And lastly, it's the fist time I watch a drama with romance involved where there was not one kiss.

Okay, episode 15, pretty much useless. Does nothing for the story as far as I was concerned. I was going to wait until the finale recaps was up but I got to say, all the whine about the end is too much. I won't abstract on why until it the recap is released but I like how things ended. It makes sense in the scope of the story starting from episode 1. But I just wanted to say that the hate is a bit much.

Sigh. I have yet to watch the finale but I find myself feeling extremely depress. It’s like as if I have caught on the endless brooding & lamenting virus that KS and FMR have had in the last 5 episodes. Ironically, it feels as if I too had been on some time-travel machine and am now lost in an alternate universe. I am left questioning to myself over and over again, “What the fuck happened???!!!”

The writer should not have bothered to explain Past Mirae’s existence and the whole time-travell issue because it is obvious that she had done very little research in this field. Instead, she should have just played up the confusion that each of these individuals would have experienced when their initial fate is being meddled with. Why was it that only KS had those “premonition dreams”? Couldn’t MR, SJ, YK & even Oppa have had those dreams too? It would have been interesting to see SJ feeling confuse and seeing ‘flashes’ of his relationship with YK, and vice versa.

In the beginning the drama questions the significance between fate & destiny. Now, I am questioning my own fate for having made that wrong choice to watch this drama when I had that gut feeling that it was going to be bad.

your idea of them having a dream would have been a reason for a turnaround. Too bad the writer didn't thought of that.

Taking what coco just said about there being no kiss in the whole drama, maybe that has to do with how the end is eh? Just some more food for thought

And the parallel universe idea. I don't understand why it's so hard to understand. Its kind of the under lying message of the whole drama, that you can't change the past but you can change the present

so many expectations. and everyone kept saying how yong-hwa did a smart thing by picking MHIYD over Heirs....NOT.
this is disappointing, it fizzled out so soon, its like everything about this drama is a half-assed job.
