Mi-rae’s Choice: Episode 6

Simply put, I love this episode. Knowing the future can be dangerous, especially when you can never be certain of what the outcome will be. So I love that our hero doesn’t let a pesky prediction get in the way of trying his best anyway, future be damned. Who knew that our serious morning show host would one day put his own neck on the line for the sake of others? Will he be able to save lives, save his career, and get the girl?

Good news: Mi-rae’s Choice saw a small upswing with this episode hitting a 7.5%. Huzzah!

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Everyone gapes in shock as lightning strikes Namsan Tower, causing the spindle to crack. Shin can hardly believe it, even though he’s seen it with his own eyes. Which is when Oppa calls, yelling that he would have filmed this once-in-a-lifetime event if he had known about it earlier.

Ajumma tells him to go ahead, and tells him about a fire at a subway station that will occur the day after tomorrow during the morning rush hour. Giving him the arsonist’s description and how there will be over a hundred casualties, she tells him to cover it as a special feature.

Mi-rae jumps into action, and when Oppa says that it could be a load of crackpot nonsense, she says no—everything Ajumma says comes true. Unfortunately, the police takes her warnings as a drunken rant and sends her away.

Ajumma Mi-rae asks if Shin believes her now, adding that these are true events and not mere predictions. “If it’s true, then we have to stop it!” Shin yells. Despite what she may think, he’s not someone to put lives at risk just to cover a big story.

Jokey PD is shocked when the subway station’s CCTV cameras captures the arsonist (wearing a red hat) on video. It spooks him and the rest of the team, who collectively rack their brains on how to tackle this. Then Se-joo suggests the simpler solution—why don’t they just broadcast it instead?

He enlists Yoo-kyung’s help to obtain permission from the subway officials to film there. She pouts with worry outside the office, but as it turns out, she gets the okay without even lifting one aegyo finger, much to her confusion.

The team is both surprised and impressed at the news, and Shin raises a suspicious eyebrow when he hears that someone had already put in a word for them. He immediately suspects Se-joo and hangs back to ask who’s pulling the power strings behind him.

Se-joo answers that it all worked out anyway: they’ll save lives, have a show, and raise ratings. That last part is the wrong thing to say to Shin at present, but Se-joo remains realistic about how ratings are also important in this industry.

The team spends the next day in disaster prep mode by surveying the station, asking the medics for help, etc. I do love the bit when Jokey PD tests the sprinkler system himself with a lighter as his hoobaes cringe, and deadpans, “It doesn’t work.”

Oppa nearly flips his lid at Shin’s suggestion to come clean about everything they know about the predicted arson. There are lives at stake, Shin argues, and wouldn’t it be awfully convenient that a production team just happened to be at the scene of the crime?

He doesn’t feel right about putting on a show to fool the public, to which Oppa retorts, “And will that go on air?!” Shin counters that it’s their job to relay the truth and stick to their principles, but Oppa shrewdly points out that they’re in this mess in the first place because of him.

Shin catches Oppa at the elevator and agrees to go into the subway himself to intercept the criminal. He won’t let his appearance be sold as mere coincidence however, and he requests that Mi-rae work with him.

Oppa says that’s out of the question, and they bicker about why Mi-rae isn’t an option. Having overheard the tail-end of this discussion, Mi-rae appears around the corner and volunteers to go out into the field.

Shin bolsters that argument by saying she’s been taking “lessons” from him anyway. Mmhm, okay, you keep calling them lessons for now. Oppa has no choice but to let her go, even though he doesn’t like the arrangement.

As they survey the subway station, Shin chides himself for being selfish and thinking this story could be one last shot at saving his career. But Mi-rae points out that he took on the job anyway and even broke his own set of principles for his team.

Shin gets on the defensive in his usual huffy tone, to which Mi-rae wonders why he purposefully makes himself out to be the bad guy and pushing people away. There isn’t a point in getting to know his co-workers on a personal basis when it’s every man for himself, Shin argues.

Mi-rae asks why he seems to be friendly with Yoo-kyung then, and Shin answers that she’s refreshing and he feels comfortable around her. He turns the question on her about Se-joo, and when he gets the same answer, he asks if they’re really dating.

She asks if he’d like it if they were, and he averts his eye while answering that they look good together. Then Mi-rae asks why Shin specifically requested her to help him and if he treats his other hoobae to tours around the building and private lessons like he does with her. Shin answers: “Because you’re special.” Omo.

After a noticeable pause, he adds that he never had to pay so much attention to another hoobae to make sure they did their job right. For a journalist who boasts about the truth, you sure have a hard time admitting your own feelings, eh?

Mi-rae is near tears now, and when she nearly falls into the tracks in her distracted state, Shin pulls her out. Then he says that he’s never taught anyone else (i.e., she’s the only one). Aw.

Ajumma Mi-rae is alarmed to hear that Mi-rae and Shin are out on assignment together. She sets off to find her younger self (it’s so cute how they both have each other saved as “Younger/Older Me” on their phones), and even hangs up on Chairman Lee in her haste.

She finds Mi-rae packing in the office to warn her that going out into the field is too dangerous. She backs down and apologizes, admitting that she didn’t have the foresight to think of the potential victims in her prediction. But why does Mi-rae keep hanging around Shin anyway?

Ajumma Mi-rae confirms that her younger self will be ruined if she marries Shin, “I’m you, after all.” But Mi-rae counters that they’re in fact quite different, and she’s already changed for the better.

It’s Shin and his stubborn personality that’s the problem, Ajumma repeats, and the changes in her own personality won’t influence the future AT ALL. To that, Mi-rae answers matter-of-factly that Shin has changed—why he’s even taken on this story for the sake of his team.

That’s news to Ajumma Mi-rae as she tries to compute the fact that Shin possibly has noble intentions that extends further than himself.

As for Shin, he paces outside the subway entrance, arguing with himself between hoping the arson story will be hit and (literally) slapping himself for wishing for such a horrible thing.

Ajumma Mi-rae issues one last word of warning to Mi-rae before she heads out. She needs to be careful with messing with major events, or she might find herself in a bigger tangled mess. Mi-rae assures her that they have everything under control.

The station manager is alerted about the faulty sprinkler system, and orders the plumber to fix it. The plumber apologizes for overlooking the problem… and then puts on his red hat. Ack, it’s you!!

D-Day. The morning show goes on air without Shin, who gripes over how they chose not to tell the truth like he wanted. Meanwhile, Oppa is a ball of nerves as he checks in repeatedly with everyone at their stations to make sure the location is secure.

Oppa then quietly confers with Ajumma Mi-rae on whether they’ve set everything up at the right station, which is when Ajumma’s voice falters, unsure of whether it was the subway car or the station itself. Uh oh.

At the same time, Shin and Mi-rae are only one stop away from their destination. He reminds her to forgo the broadcast and save the others in a worst-case scenario. And that’s when Red Hat enters the subway car.

Though Shin says it could be anyone, they film him anyway just in case, and watch him fiddle with his backpack. Then the entire car reels in shock as Red Hat pours lighter fluid onto the floor just as Ajumma remembers that it was the subway car. Ohhh crap.

Oppa relays the danger to the team immediately, but it’s too late because Red Hat has already flicked on his lighter and set the car ablaze.

Shin covers Mi-rae out of harm’s way as Red Hat exits, cackling like madman. Then Shin sets off after him with Mi-rae filming behind him with her phone. Ack!!

Luckily the train pulls into the next stop where the production crew is, and the panicked passengers stampede out of the smoky train in droves. It only gets worse from there since both the water supply and sprinkler system is inaccessible while Oppa frantically tries to get ahold of his sister.

Thankfully Mi-rae calls to inform Oppa that she’s fine and that she’s recording the entire thing on her phone as she follows the chase in the station.

Se-joo, meanwhile, tries to ram his way into the locked water tank room just as Yoo-kyung arrives with the keys. What they find inside is the tank handle chained to the pipes, and they get to work to cut through them.

Shin corners Red Hat in a dead end as the live footage broadcasts on air. The rookie announcer covers the story no better than a poor sports commentator: “Will he grab the lighter?” “Oh no, it got taken away!” Ha, I know it’s supposed to be a tension-filled dramatic scene, but it’s still funny.

Red Hat wrestles out of Shin’s grip and threatens them again, but he’s out of ammo and forced to run. Shin gives chase, telling Mi-rae to run, but she crashes into a display that falls on top of her.

Sliding her phone over, Mi-rae sends Shin after their culprit, and with great reluctance, Shin promises to be back soon. Eek, but that open lighter fluid bottle is sure making me nervous.

Shin chases down Red Hat and stalls him long enough to be apprehended by the authorities. He barely takes two seconds before running back for Mi-rae. Hurry!

At the same time, Mi-rae tries to squeeze out to no avail as electrical sparks fly around her, threatening to set the floor alight. Shin arrives and lifts the display so Mi-rae can escape just as the sprinklers turn on.

They both break into smiles of relief as they sit under the sprinklers. Se-joo arrives just then to see them together, and you can almost see his heart break then and there.

When Shin apologizes for throwing her into danger, Mi-rae answers that she’s learned a lot from the experience. Shin says that he’s learned something too: “That you [Mi-rae] can never die.”

By some miracle (or dramaland rule), Shin’s phone still works, and Oppa is utterly relieved to see Mi-rae safe and sound. Then Shin takes over the closing and informs the public truthfully that their team was tipped off about the incident and planned accordingly in advance.

He admits that things quickly turned dangerous, but everything turned out all right in the end. Shin: “The future [mi-rae]… fate… is a lot scarier than anything we can prepare for. But one choice can also change the future. The future isn’t set in stone. Your choice is your future.”

The story is a bona fide hit, and Chairman Lee stews in her office before issuing the order to leave the morning show as is.

Shin and his team go out for a celebratory dinner in high spirits, and he even praises them on a job well done, to their amazement. They teasingly toss out ideas to cover Shin’s marked personality change next, and ha, Mi-rae silently reminds him to smile.

Mi-rae notices that both Se-joo and Yoo-kyung are absent, and learns that Se-joo will be joining them later whereas Yoo-kyung is off at an invite-only chaebol birthday party. Ten bucks says Se-joo is at the same party.

It quickly becomes apparent that despite Yoo-kyung’s reporter status, she clearly isn’t welcomed within the high-society circle. Yoo-kyung scopes out the crowd of celebrities and singers, determined to mingle anyway.

HA, Yoo-kyung’s awkward out-of-place experience just cracks me up as she sneers at the pretentiousness of it all.

Mi-rae is sent out an errand and gets held up by a nightclub employee trying to persuade her for more business. Having followed behind her, Shin intercedes just then, and lays down a nerdy smackdown. It’s… kinda awesome.

As they walk away, the employee curses up a storm behind them, which effectively stirs Shin’s temper. So he marches back and get up in the guy’s face… to give him a talking to about curbing his words.

Then Shin turns to Mi-rae and asks if he did well, like a child seeking praise for his actions, and she tells him that he did.

Shin asks if her hand is okay now, saying that he really wanted to send her out of harm’s way earlier. She asks why, and he answers, “Because [the thought] bothered me.”

Mi-rae becomes aware of how their hands brush each other at that moment, so Shin takes her hand and scoops it into his pocket with his, saying, “We’ll just get rid of that bothersome thought then.” That’s it. I’m done for. Adorbs.

And not far behind them, Ajumma Mi-rae emerges with a watchful eye.

Back at the party, Yoo-kyung cocks her head curiously when she spots Se-joo sitting alone. I’m pretty sure those sunglasses will attract more attention, but whatever. It doesn’t take long for her to put the pieces together in her head as he’s approached by a couple of rich buddies.

Se-joo rises and locks eyes with Yoo-kyung, and he allows her to confirm that the maknae VJ is in fact a chaebol heir.

He meets her at his car, now changed into his casual attire, and Yoo-kyung now addresses him in jondaemal. Her tone makes it clear that they cannot belong in the same social circles anymore, as he confesses his noble intentions to learn about the company from the ground up.

When he asks her to keep his secret, she jokes that she has to or else he’ll fire her. Above all, Mi-rae can’t know about his blue-blood status because she’s too pure and will just run away.

Yoo-kyung scoffs and asks if it’s so bad to have feelings for a rich man. Hm, something tells me we’re not talking about Mi-rae anymore. He simply answers that he’s come across too many golddiggers who have before.

She remains silent in the car, and Se-joo asks if she’s upset about the truth before they join the others. But Yoo-kyung turns around with a wide smile and speaks to him in banmal like before. It’s only after she sends Se-joo on ahead does she let the truth sink in.

Yoo-kyung runs into Ajumma Mi-rae at the convenience store, and they both recognize each other. She helps pick up Ajumma’s things off of the floor, which is when Yoo-kyung asks why the ajumma has Mi-rae’s diary.

Ajumma brusquely answers that that’s her name too, but something pings off Yoo-kyung’s suspicion radar.

Se-joo’s face darkens to see Mi-rae sitting alone. He sits beside her reluctantly, and she thanks him, having heard about his heroic feat with the sprinklers.

He brightens a little at that and hints that it’d sure be nice if somebody gave him a massage for his efforts. Mi-rae obliges with a smile.

Shin returns at that moment and sees the two smiling and laughter together. His face falls.

COMMENTS

What a fantastic episode. Among the many things that I enjoy about this show, I love watching our four leads interact with each other and their subsequent pairings. I think that the show has done a fair job in that area up to this point, and to be quite honest, I’m torn between Team Shin and Team Se-joo. It seemed so easy at the start when Se-joo was the perfect gentlemanly foil to Shin’s hot-headedness, but now that we’ve broke through that confidence to reveal a vulnerable underbelly with a heart for others, I can see how Mi-rae fell for Shin. (The first time, that is. Unless Ajumma Mi-rae had her own future advisor, which would make it the nth time.)

Mi-rae continues to impress me as a heroine time and time again with her steadfastness and stubbornness towards her career and herself. I admire the way she sticks up for herself and take the initiative, a characteristic that was initially buried under her insecurity. At first it was to prove her self-worth, but I like that we see that consistent quality in her as the story progresses. Her general carefree attitude about love (which could make her interactions with each suitor that much more blissful) is a quality I enjoy about her because she has no idea that that’s why both men are drawn to her. I find it delightfully charming for now and dearly hope that doesn’t change.

As the story continues to transform into different versions tweaked by personal choices, it’s safe to say that this specific timeline differs from Ajumma Mi-rae’s reality (time-space conundrums are simply beyond me). That being said, it grounds Mi-rae’s remark that although she and Ajumma are the same person in being, they are quite different. This makes for a jarring experience on a character consistency level when you’ve got one optimistic heroine versus one jaded one and wonder if they’re actually the same person. But I’m intrigued by the exploration of how our futuristic heroine arrived at this shift in perspective that led to her narrow-minded focus on her one-woman mission. And that biased perspective is what makes her an unreliable narrator, who is deadset on one outcome.

Shin is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters, especially within the past two weeks. I love that we’re already seeing some marked changes in his character, and although we have Mi-rae to thank as a main influence for that change, it’s rewarding to see him warm up to his co-workers even though their allegiance to him can turn on a dime. I like that we got to see the transition from his brewing romantic feelings to his denial and the eventual honest admission and expression of how special Mi-rae is. I like that Mi-rae can see past his defenses and call him out on them, and in that same vein, directly challenge his intentions for seeing her outside of work. How ironic that the journalist needs a reminder to be true to all things, including his feelings.

One cannot just try to defeat an epic saeguk starring Ha Ji Won. But I personally prefer MHIYD and will stick to it to the end. I just hope it is worth the wait.

I do not like saeguk's, but tried watching Empress Ki because I was bored, gave up about halfway through. It's main attraction might be the fancy and colorful costumes. I did not watch it long enough to judge the acting.

..too contrived?...

There are so many hollywood movies about the commingling of present characters and future ones.

Maybe they just don't like the lightning? Come on, people are always superficial to a certain point.

Maybe they don't like Mirae?! If my sister saw her her first comment would be 'ugly' - she even criticised Lee Min Ho and Kim Woo-Bin from Heirs (I'm sorry we are blood related ...no I'm not, but our view on things just differs)

I don't think she really liked him in the beginning. She liked the idea of making him hers, he turned her down and covered her legs so she began to see him as someone she had to conquer not someone she liked and wanted to date. She came off a little too arrogant in the beginning and though she redeemed herself she still has that early on slime ball stigma to work through. They may still end up together but he and Mi Rae sure have some sweet moments.

I wish they wouldn't have killed any chance of yoo-kyung and Shin since maybe I'd be more open to shipping other couples. But if Mirae and Seju get together yoo-kyung and Shin get nothing since they aren't into each other. YK and Shin are the two most sympathetic of the four for me, so I want them to be happy and have a good career.

I also find Yoo Kyeong and Shin to be the most sympathetic of the four.

By this point, Mirae and Shin go well together mostly because they mutually have feelings for each other and have the most honest relationship thus far.

And now I'm waiting for my adorable Yoo Kyeong to snag Se Joo 'cause they also have the most honest relationship between them (they're both true to themselves in front of each other than they are to others). The Se Joo-Mirae ship was long gone since Shin turned nicer.

Thanks for the update!
I really enjoyed this episode too because of all the extra scenes we get with our respective couples.
But a major downpoint for me was when se-joo asks yoo-kyung not to tell mi-rae the truth of him being a chaebol because she'd just run away scared. I was shipping them so much, but what he completely misreads her? Sure I get that he thinks she's cute and innocent, but that misunderstanding of his just crushed me a little.
Whereas shin and mi-rae's growing fondness of each other and understanding of each other's flaws makes me ship a little more now!
And that little scene where yoo-kyung bumps into ajhumma and sees the diary.. is this a little foreshadowing of yoo-kyung/the others figuring out on their own that ajhumma really is mi rae from the future??!

Just because he doesn't want Mi-Rae to like him for his money doesn't give him the right to lie to her, especially if he wants to build a meaningful relationship. He should know by now that Present Mi-Rae isn't the type of person to go after a guy for money AND that she wouldn't "run away" either because she values who he is as a person. Geez, this actually really infuriates me. Just because he's had a lot of experience with gold diggers, doesn't mean he should lie about his background to a girl he wants to start a relationship with. Relationships are based on trust. That said, I do love Se Joo. He's adorable and sweet and my hearts already breaking for him. But I have to admit that part of the reason why I ADORE Kim Shin is because he values truth and honesty.

Real time Mi Rae doesn't believe future Mi Rae about Se Joo. She just wants to focus on her career and test the waters with both, regardless of what ahjumma says. I think that at first when she got angry at Shin and told him off she began to change. It should translate to future Mi Rae but I guess she can't change while still in the past.
I'm waiting for the sentinel that came from the future to go after future Mi Rae for coming back and tampering with historical events. I also wonder who this guy is because as he was going back in time Shin dreamt of his original meeting with Mi Rae... the one that never happened because she changed lanes.
I just went off on a tangent but who cares... lol

They definitely need to make a chaebol girl a lead character. Ooh wait! Yoon Eun Hye did it once in Take care of the young lady. Wow, such a well rounder actress.

Ah yes, the rare drama which leading character is the jilted/demonic chaebol girl. I actually like that, they should write something like that more. But then again, that is just another sinister portrayal of chaebol daughters. They just couldn't get more justice. Not that I am complaining.

While it's true, dishonesty in dramaland would not cost you the love of your life. Usually, the significant other would be written/made as a very understanding and extremely forgiving. But now we all start to see that it is Shin-Mirae in the end, right? I really hope so

The lies are easily forgiven since neither were all that vindictive, but the fact she can't see through him at all like she does Shin and he can't see through her isn't something they can overcome.

I agree that dishonesty in dramaland won't cost a character a love. It's just that Mirae was just always attracted to Shin from the heart whereas she was trying to kindle a love by force with Se Joo, that too rather halfheartedly.

She is innocent though, it's her future self that's fake or asking her to be fake. Real time Mi Rae genuinely likes both of them. I think that being told what to do makes her want to do the opposite and that's why she has embraced Shin and hasn't gone after Se Joo in earnest. She may also be afraid of being seen as someone who just wants to be taken care of.

There was another scene in a previous episode that made think that Se Joo was not the one for Mi Rae. It was when they were sitting at a table outside the station, right before Shin and Yoo Kyung joined them. Mi Rae was freaking out a little and acting it out and Se Joo clearly was embarrassed and raised his voice at her to stop it...

I mean Mi Rae is clearly someone who needs encouragement from others, not to be chastised...

And even if at this point of the story she is growing into her own, it only means she feels free to like herself the way she is, crazy and all.

So yeah... On the Shin Ship all the way since then ;)

Much better than the last episode. A little correction though, Sejoo was the one who came up with the idea broadcasting the subway fire, not Kim Shin.
And if Mirae wants to try to go out with both Sejoo and Kim Shin, shouldn't the writer give the both of them fair chance? But it can't be help since Sejoo is only a second lead.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again because this episode has proved it that Yookyung has a lot more layers to her character than just being an aegyo girl. I like that about her.

I can feel it coming again, Shin-Woo will get denied again just like the Go-Mi-Nam story (She is Beautiful). I saw on the preview that Se-Joo will confess in the next episode and I am not looking forward to Mi-Rae's reply. Aish! I was shipping Se-Joo but I can tell that the second lead won't get the girl. I have actually researched many dramas to see if the second lead would ever get the girl, and I have not found one yet. Double Aish!! But I want him to stay in the game until Episode 14 or so because he basically told Yookyung at least twice how much he likes Mi-Rae and that was a surprise to me.

The reason I love YEH so much is that she is willing to make herself into her character. Although everyone hates her hairstyle, but she is so believable as a girl nerd, saying that she does not know how to seduce a man. The scene on the bus before the basketball game, Mi-Rae said to herself in her mirror, "I am so charming, what to do?" That was so real that she has discovered for the first time her power with men. Oh, I love that so much, she (YEH) is so real.

I think it's "How to Meet A Perfect Neighbor"? And yup, he was the second lead there, and he did the same thing in "Queen of Reversals." PSH sure is lucky.

Also in My Love Patzzi Kim Rae-Won was so charismatic that I actually thought he was the lead until I read up on it and figured out the Kim Jae-Won was supposed to be the lead. In the end the girl chooses to stay by Rae-Won's side because her platonic love for him was greater than her romantic love for Jae-Won.

Also in Dream High, the 2nd lead gets the girl.

yeah, I guess it's the Park Shi Hoo charm lol

Thanks for the recap! (And generally covering what is easily becoming my favourite drama of 2013.)

I sound like a broken record because for every episode, my comment is basically 'Everything is perfect the end'. It's so rare to find a drama where each character really seems like a breathing, living person with their own morals, ideals, desires and expectations. There are no wooden caricatures here, they're all the main characters of their own story:

The staff member who's on the cusp of marriage, Miranda who's both sly and petty, Older Mirae (who only now am I sure is actually who she says she is) who came with all these ideas of passionate revenge and yet can't help but fall in love with her husband all over again and want the best for him, Younger Mirae who is already so different just by what should be simple happenings in a day that become so much more meaningful, her brother who is even more protective of his sister than most with their parents gone and frustrated that more men 'too' (I loved that scene omg) are becoming attracted to Mirae, Yookyung who can't help but be rocked to her foundations by a couple of words simply tossed her way but isn't even frustrated with the reality she's living because she's never imagined anything else ... and Shin. Shin, who in the space of five episodes, has changed from a man who would've punched that guy on the street after swearing at him at the top of his lungs to a sassy and calm grammar smackdown (and the cutest 'I did well right?'). He reminds me of the prosecutor in City Hunter because he's so clean cut to the point he's harmful to others and pisses people off.

And I don't understand how Yonghwa went from cutely awkward in You're Beautiful to wince worthy in Heartstrings to someone who commands screen presence here. I might not understand it, but man am I grateful.

I'm a bit disappointed that the writer decided to make no longer shooting off expletives because that was what endeared me to him in the beginning. Plus, it seemed like a part of his personality. I wish instead it went something like this: Shin giving the nerdy smackdown and then when he walked away saying, "I did good, right?" he would let out a stream of profanity privately in front of Mirae. That would've been funny and in keeping with his personality. I don't like that he's becoming too perfect.

I really wanted Sae-joo to end up with Mi-rae simply because Yong-hwa is so comfortable in this role that it is hard for me to not like Sae-joo. I swear, I'm gonna have a serious second lead syndrome by the time this drama ends. I also like how Mi-rae is around Sae-joo and how he is with her. They always have that comfortable feeling that's just sweet whereas when she is with Shin, it almost always feels like she was gonna break her heart and then some -- like liking a married Sunbae -- I suck and comparing things...

Right now I am curious on how Shin became the reason why the person Mi-rae (the future) loves died. Oppa isn't exactly the awesomest Oppa in the world, but, I liked that he hates that when anyone else pick on his sister -- Like, only he can do that. That is comforting to know that at least he loves his sister. I wonder if Oppa died and Mi-rae came to a realization she lost someone really important and come back to save him because she was an ungrateful sister that never even appreciate Oppa. It sure sounds a little less selfish than coming back just to marry a chaebol... I do feel for Sae-joo on that account... I just hope he didn't find out that Mi-rae knew who he really was...

I think the actor is going good job as Sae Jo, much better than i feared because of his bad rep idol actor.

Sae Jo has been friendzoned completly by Mirae, she plays with him like a male best friend. There is no sexual tension even when she messages him. The cliffhanger was a fake ending because its clear for us more than Shin that Mirae likes Sae Jo as her first friend in YBS who helped her.

I cant wait to see how he reacts when in next ep he sees Mirae leaning to Shin. I hope drops the fake VJ act with Mirae. If you are gonna get the girl atleast try fighting for her.

I liked the Sae Jo that was arrogant and more honest with Yoo Kyung in that party.

If they want higher ratings for the morning show just give everyone watching a little Kim Shin fanservice why don't ya....

I can't even say how much I love Yoo Kyung for stopping Seju from going to ruin Shin and Mirae moments. I don't care what you ship, but let people have their moments without interruption please.

Speaking of him, I feel bad for him but he's just so totally misread Mirae from the very beginning (and she only sees one side of him too) that they'd just never work. He fascinated by his ideal Mirae, but doesn't know the actual woman. He'll move on.

People are getting hurt for no reason.

How is Mirae golddigger? She stopped following that advice long ago. I think its otherwise she is too cruel being playful friend with See-Jo and giving him too much false hope.

Required fields are marked *

Yep, I saw it. It's a bold move, but as much as Mirae might like Seju she likes Shin a lot more. To accept Seju she'd have to give up Shin and that's not something sh'e willing to do.

I don't think she is a gold digger actually, but she's the one who knows the truth is ajumma is pressuring her to marry him because of his money. Mirae mostly ignores that, but she's pretty obviously been forcing herself with him for awhile.

0

I agree she has been forcing herself with him for a while and seeing the hurt on Shin's face its time for Mirae to clearly broadcast who she wants.

Thats why i welcome Seju bold move because it will make Mirae choose the guy she actually wants. I wonder how she reacts seeing Shin reaction and missundering her and Seju.

They have many more dangerous obstacles in their way like Future Mirae and the mystery of what might happened in the future other timeline.

0

Mirae still confused because she believes that the ajumma is her future self. So she listens and follows her suggestion. The thing is that she also has her own feelings and she should have stick to it. But romance aside, this story also showing how Mirae has changed from her supposedly real self, who is a dedicated wife, and her current new self, independent woman.

0

I don't get the impression that Mi-Rae really believes every single thing FMR tells her, so she probably isn't completely sure that Se Joo is a rich chaebol. And even if she does, she wouldn't choose him just for those reasons. I think she's spending time with him because he's a good guy that she ideally would like to fall for and I think the possibility that he might be rich isn't stopping her from thinking of him as an ordinary guy. And I still can't really feel too sorry for him when he's the one being dishonest about who he is. Neither of them have professed their feelings for her yet, but once they do, I'm sure she won't lead them on.

He fascinated by his ideal Mirae, but doesn’t know the actual woman.

You're somewhat right. I think he does see Mirae for what she actually is. It's just that he's fascinated more by what she represents: freedom. Like he fell in love when Mirae was swimming uninhibitedly (read: naked, without care to whoever saw her). Then he saw her time and time again raising her voice against the people who put her down or cornered her. It's the sort of freedom she has that he himself longs for.

It's why I think he and Yoo Kyeong would make a good couple because both are very restrained in their lives, unable to have a lot of choices or the freedom to make their own decisions. So both can learn to grow together to gain the freedom they want and fall in love more honestly (at least on Se Joo's part).

A lot of action in this episode! I liked it. One question, though: what was the point of the Namsan Tower incident? Nothing seemed to come of it. Was it just supposed to prove Future Mirae's predictive powers?

It took me a while, but now I'm totally aboard the Shin-Mirae ship. So cute together! The only problem is that I'm also a Mirae-Se-Joo fan as well. Ottokke, ottokke . . .maybe she can time-share them? :)

I appreciate that we are seeing a nobler side of Shin's personality. He's not just a stuffy didact; he actually believes in what's right, in this case, trying to prevent danger to the commuters.

I am really feeling bad for Se-Joo - poor guy, all alone with his millions and his too-big sunglasses (seriously, wardrobe person - they're supposed to be proportional to his face). In all seriousness, though, he's a good guy and he deserves a good woman. And I still haven't seen anything from Soo-Kyoung indicating that she's improved as a person. Still getting gold-digger vibes from her.

I did laugh at Future Mirae trying to warn others about messing with major events having consequences. Hypocrisy much?

Really looking forward to next week's episode!

I dont think it will be a big change since this is a new timeline, different world so the speak.

Also 100 lives is nothing really in the huge messed human world where 500 000 dies because hurricane, high waves in Asia.

God, death will balance out those 100 people saved from death the next day with another accident or horrible terrorist action.

In the grand scope of the world, the universe 100 deaths or lives is as small as a fly. Doesnt want to sound cold but there are too many horrible things happening everyday to people.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

It's not about cold but about the importance of each human life. 500K people killed is devastating, as is one person killed. All lives are important but all lives are not eqully important. If Hitler was killed as a kid would 6 million Jews and 5 million gypsies and countless other people have died? And I'm not sure about the whole fate balancing out thing. Would God have raised up another Hitler or Mao Tse Tung or Stalin...if those folks were killed as kids? It's not about numbers but the specific individual. In this drama, it's not about balancing numbers but screwing around with fate.

One of the people on this subway could be a future discoverer of the cure for cancer, or a serial killer. Heck in this scenario the murderer/arsonist lived. Did he die in the subway fire in the other timeline? Doesn't his anger remain, even if he's in prison? Will he return to destroy the mother of the man who created time travel technique?

But all that surmising aside, if the love of two characters are fated, shouldn't the death of 100 people be even more fated? And as Future Mirae said, you change one thing and something worse could happen. Heck, in this scenario, Shin and Mirae almost died during the attack. Is saving the 100 people creating a disaster for 1000 more people who would never have died?

0

You ask really good questions about how one of those people might have been important discoverer of cure like cancer or another important human fated enough. I guess then it was his fate or the God's plan to survive in this timeline.

Is saving 100 people creating worse thing for a 1000 more people in this timeline future?

I was trying to think like a being like God and fate being important in this series i think it will right itself and change back what happened in this ep by saving these 100 people.

Its just messed up fate that someone other 100 people or 1000 people will die for the ones that survived in this ep. We have seen fate doesnt care for humans that try to change things that happened in another future.

0

Agree. I'm just wondering why Time-Cop (if that's what he is) is just sitting around not doing anything. I don't even know how much power he has.

And what about Future Mirae's aging?

There really has to be some repair/restoration made. Way too much has gone off-kilter because of Future Mirae's meddling.

0

@Carole McDonnell

Yeah im wondering too what Time Cop is doing by letting her create havoc and not being faster to go after her.

I just hope its because they are saving Future Mirae getting caught for conflict full eps of the last half of the series. Not just lazy writing that lets Future Mirae meddle, play with time, fate this much.

0

Carole, you raise some very thorny and interesting philosophical points. I've had similar thoughts while watching MHIYD, although perhaps not phrased as articulately :). This is what I was alluding to in my comments on the first episode - if we had a chance to change the past, would we? And perhaps more importantly, *should* we? Obviously there are cases that would seem like a no-brainer, like the subway fire. But as you pointed out, we don't know the larger implications of what seems like a short-term victory.

That's why it was the height of irony to see Future Mirae warn others not to mess with the future, when we she doesn't seem to consider the negative ramifications of her actions at all. I don't hate her as many others here do, but I do think it will be an important part of the drama for her to see some negative consequences for coming back in time.

0

Hi Faye:
I agree.
I see what you mean. In real life, I do think regrets is good thing. One doesn't alwys make the best choices in the past and there is virtue in giving up on something or removing one's self and stopping the choice. That is what divorce is about. So even if one does learn from bad choices, I don't think one has to make bad choices in order to learn.

But in dramaland...wow...fooling around with time. Things come back to bite you. That is why every Time travelling future that I'm aware of always puts a lot of restriction on time-traveling. One would think the Time Scientists in Mirae's time would have researched her life even more before they accepted her as a volunteer.

0

Hi Carole:

I don't know if this makes sense, but to me, regret versus actually changing something are two different concepts. I completely agree with looking back and saying, wow, I really messed up and made the wrong decision there. I regret that decision, and faced with the same situation, I hope I'll never do it again.

But if somehow there was actually the chance to go back and change the course of your history, I think it becomes a murkier area. I guess this is where one's ideas of a Higher Power come into play. If you believe that a certain sequence of events was supposed to happen, and there may be ancillary factors at play, is it wrong to change what happened (in dramaland, since obviously we don't have that ability in life)? I don't know, but maybe. I don't believe that a belief in destiny means everything is preordained - free choice and making the right decision are hugely important concepts -but messing with fate when you only see one part of the picture doesn't sit quite well with me, either.

I don't think I'm really explaining things well. But I think you touched on some important themes the drama is highlighting.

0

From what I've read about wormholes and time travel, it seems the universe has set points and set up the system that one cannot change the past but one can go back to "look" at it. So it seems that although the universe/God has room for time travel, and does not believe in predestination per se...once the event is done, it is done and cannot be changed by a human being. This is a little different from fate where God has ordained a thing. So let's say it's not even a character like Mirae. Let's say it's Hitler (cause he's always used in time travel stories, it seems...along with Lee Harvey Oswald) .. Let's say Hitler decides as he's dying in the bunker that he should not have killed all those people...and his Nazi scientists had come up with a time machine... There is no way -- even with his regrets-- that he can go back and fix his choices. The universe doesn't allow for re-do. Although time should flow in all directions because of quantum physics, on earth for some reason it flows in one direction and no amount of "human" power can change it.

So there is destiny as something fore-ordained.
And there is destiny as well, you made that bed and you have to lie in it and there is no going back.

I think the way the universe is set up -- that you can look t the past and yet not affect it-- is not something we humans can understand... Free will implies one is able to do something and live with the consequences. If one goes about going oops! whoops, shouldn't a done that! every other second and retweaking, then choice loses its power.

Not destiny or God-ordained or universe-ordained though. But it does make our choices much more important...even if some of us married as giddy kids. IT does make one wonder why so many folks marry when young when the hormones are so wobbly. But perhaps hormones, phermones, insight all help us make the right choices. I recently saw a report on kissing to the effect that kissing is really about people sensing each other's DNA and figuring out compatibility.

0

@Everyone in the Convo

Based on my very limited knowledge of Quantum Physics/Parallel Universe/String Theory, Carol is absolutely right about the fact that once an event occurs, that event cannot actually change. What can happen, which is what "scientifically happened" (I use scientifically VERY loosely here) is that FMR has created a parallel universe. Whatever happened to FMR the first time around STILL happened. The time travel simply created another world for FMR to mess around in.

There's also another paradox involved if FMR's world and MR's world are the same: FMR should be completely different than she is now--MR has changed, and therefore FMR in this timeline HAS to change as well. Basically FMR's "memories" are all now incorrect because they never happened in the first place. Since they never happened, whatever future FMR thinks she had isn't the future our MR is facing. So if we keep the pseudo-parallel universe theory, FMR and MR are two DIFFERENT people altogether, and their conflicting personalities will make "sense." FMR's "memories" will still exist.

I think it's very unfair to call Yoo-Kyung a gold digger when she clearly would have kept going after Se Joo regardless of whether she found out or not because she genuinely really liked him. It's not like the show has ever shown her going after a guy for those reasons so it's kind of an unfair assertion. In fact, when she finds out about Se Joo, her reaction isn't a happy one and she even scolds him a little bit for lying. And while she maybe hasn't improved that much yet, as soon as her reasons for acting all cutesy were revealed, I came to the conclusion that she's actually a pretty cool character already. She gets in little harmless schoolgirl fights with Mi-Rae, but she hasn't tried to sabotage Mi Rae for jealous reasons like most second leads do. She's actually one of the best second leads I've come across.

Thanks for the recap!

I noticed that water is playing the role of destiny in this drama. First, MR getting a reality slap from FMR in the swimming pool to get serious with her life. Second, when MR was playing in the ocean SJ fell in love at first sight. Third, Shin getting splashed by water when he decided to get off his high horse to get an exclusive. Fourth, when MR and SJ getting wet at the car wash Shin had the dream of MR. Fifth, when rain spoiled the amusement park date SJ's feelings became love when he see how carefree and in tune MR was with him (causing him to have hope in a filmmaking path?) And lastly when the sprinklers drenched Shin and MR there was camaderie and mutual attraction of being through and surviving the *fires of hell* together.

I go from empathizing FMR to wanting to wring her neck and back. She really doesn't know what she's doing with her meddlings. Time Cop when are you going to make your appearance?

Okay, I don't want to be petty here because it's not worth it. You cannot use as a premise the increase in the rating of MHIYD 6 to the delayed (?) or advanced (?) airing of Suspicious Housekeeper. Without you realizing it, you're implying by your line of reasoning that MHIYD is no good and people watch it only because the other drama is not aired. Don't you read practically all the comments here but the recap? Consistently two bloggers---both here and ockoala deemed it to be a fantastic episode so give it a break, will you? Acknowledge that the surge in rating could be attributed to that.

I have nothing against Suspicious Housekeeper. It must be good. I have no opinion about it because I haven't watched it. What I am just saying is even with the different time slot for the Tuesday episode, the rating went down. As objective as that.

I hope you don't bash a drama to defend another. There's no point in doing it.

I did not see any drama bashing? Perhaps you are being a bit too sensitive - akin to almost saying that you only want to see favorable opinions...

@windsun33

This was what @fh2h wrote first...saying that at Episode 6 Mirae's Choice is a flop...

fh2h October 30th, 2013 at 4:19 am

2013 is bad year for kbs. they have so many flop drama from ad genius lee taebak, sword and flower and the latest mirae’s choice. The rating increase a little because suspicious housekeeper didn’t aired at the time slot because baseball game.

If that is not bashing, then I don't know what it is. I was responding to this. I am realistic enough to know that not everyone will like MHIYD but be very objective about it and not to make premature conclusions.

This ep made this series a crack drama for me. Crack drama isnt addictive series to me, its a very good drama i fully believe in and love watching.

Great ep for the OTP, their calm scenes. The preview for next ep shows that the romance story is getting going for real now.

I dont feel bad for Sae Jo anymore, he is faking it with Mirae, he doesnt know her. He only has fantasies about the Mirae that played with the fishes in the water. He doesnt know her fears, struggles.

Also his Chaboel act and his fake act as regular guy makes him look like he is being undercover boss even with the girl he is suppose to like. He is hiding his real arrogant rich guy self and thats why he will never have a chance against Shin that shares his deepest fears with Mirae.

I like that Sae Jo as realistic in that they are finaly make the chaboel guy with glasses look like what he is. They dont make excuses for him being different from regular joes and make him the romantic hero. I like that Sae Jo more than fake honest good guy act he is doing as the poor VJ.

"He doesnt know her fears, struggles. " - I completely disagree. In the first few episodes, it was actually Se-joo who witnessed Mirae's struggles. She opened up to him, sharing her worries about her being too old and somehow incompetent. She was honest with him about not knowing even the basics of broadcasting, shared with him how her other people, including her brother and friends look down upon her. Hence, he's always been there giving her encouragement. In one of Sejoo and Yukyung's scene, he talked about how amazing Mirae is for being determined to fulfill her dreams. So Se-joo is far from not knowing who Mirae is.

Also, he is far from being a rich arrogant guy as shown by how he treated Yukyung in that Japanese restaurant, how in the first place he decided to start from the bottom to learn more about the business before taking over, how he tried defying his grandmother to help out the workers in the broadcasting station, not once but twice and how he even recommended establishing child-care services in the company when he saw writer Bae's situation. He is weary of women who goes after men because of their money, but I don't think that makes him arrogant one bit.

He is a fake VJ but I don't think all his actions necessarily have to be taken as fake too. It's just his identity as a chaebol that he is hiding.

Yeah he saw her fears about her age, her work early on but he hasnt had an honest talk with her since then. Often he talks about how amazing she just by seeing a side of her early on. He is being supportive friend and that is hurting his chances with her.

Mirae isnt imaginative, innocent thats his fantasy. He doesnt know she tried to date both guys at once, she knows he is rich but only reason she doesnt care is because she has Shin that is closer to her and she couldnt date Se-joo for real.

Im not saying he doesnt have good sides, he does but he hides his flaws, his arrogant. Hiding from golddigger is one thing but lying to Mirae and acting like a nice guy that is afraid of fighting with her by asking hard questions.

Se-Joo looks more appealing to me in scenes with Yoo Kyung because he is both regular nice guy and he is his real chaebol self at the same time. He never fakes VJ act with Yoo Kyung.

I like that Se-Joo VJ act isnt real because then he would a cliche perfect man second lead. Now he is flawed and good guy at times.

This story has grown so much on me that I cannot see any flaw. Unless for acting here and there, esp Eun Hye with her kooky actions, but I don't mind. As long as it played along well into the story, like in Missing You. Yes I agree the story building is slow but progressive and sticks to its original theme from beginning. I like how new destiny has formed and make leading couple felt more strongly to each other and how they grow as person as well. And that Sejoo-Yookyung love line is also slowly revealed.

The only one annoys me is that there is lack of explanation as to what the actual aim of Ajumma Mirae travel the time back and who is that other guy from the future? I hope next week it will all be cleared. I mean, the rating is not that impressive, so no extensions I believe.

I'm also having a bit of issue with the time-travelling portion of the drama since it's not being explained well and it's already been 6 episodes. Why is Time Cop taking his sweet time searching for Mirae? What is his purpose? If Mirae is feeling the effects of time travelling on her body (ie, aging) then why doesn't she get visions of her future changing a la Nine style as she makes her changes in the past? What happened to the dreams? I was already not buying into those dreams being a vehicle of Shin's changed feelings but now they don't keep showing up and that made it worse. I was waiting for an explanation, a better idea of what they were meant for since they were so closely tied to Time Cop time-travelling.

I don't know what is the plan of the writers to keep the identity of the future guy. Is he a time cop or some future character (Mirae's son)? The more his identity kept the more useless he become since we are closing to the middle of the drama airing period.

i think the ratings in not doing justice because it seems like the plot don't appeal to most people, i like the drama but i feel sorry for the two lead guys because they are being played by the lead actress, looks like i'm the only one who thinks the lead girl is doing very bad by leading both men on, somebody is gonna get hurt very badly...

@megumi

Yeah I guess korean audiences are confused by the premise as its not in the confines of what they're used to, or maybe they're just bored of time travel from last year. To an extent I agree with you, definitely with See Joo she is leading him on, I don't think she has any romantic feelings per se with him, but she is following FMR's advice and pushing herself to go for it. But with Shin, I think she is just drawn to him, despite all FMR's warnings to stay away, perhaps its fate. But somebody gonna get hurt defintely, my bets on poor See Joo with next week's confession.

She's not leading them on, neither of them have confessed to her or asked her out yet. Once that happens, I don't think she'll lead them on anymore. I think these past 2 episodes she wasn't sure who she liked and that she's just starting to figure it out. Se Joo also isn't really being fair because he intentionally isn't telling Mi Rae who he really is, even though she's the one person who needs the truth if their going to have a romantic relationship. And Shin hasn't quite come to terms with his feelings yet, so she hasn't really done anything wrong.

See, Miranda? This is why you've gotta have Kim Shin as your main anchor! There ain't no-one else for the job.

I was seriously fist-pumping and muttering, "GO, SHIN!!" when he was doing his closing statement!

His motto used to be: "Journalist first. Human second." It's nice that he's learning to fit into his society and team, while also learning to be by Mi-rae's side.

I found Oppa to be a cold fish so far, but his reaction to her being in danger was so heart-warming! I think I can trust him now. And I sincerely hope nothing bad happens to him...

Loving Yoo-kyung more and more. She's got her head screwed on, that girl - sure, Se-joo unlocked the water tank, but SHE unlocked the door! And Se-joo's expression when she banmal'd him was so funny!

He MC'd the VVIP event, so he must get around!

Wouldn't it be classic if he decided that Yoo-kyung was his destined woman, and pursued her like the puppy that he is?!

And I can also see Yoo-kyung's expression if that happened: "You've got to be kidding me!"

@Bibimbap

i think you dont understand my point. obviously suspicious housekeeper rating will drop because they aired late night compare the other 2 drama. let's wait next week because it will be fair competition.

This episode definitely belongs to Shin. He proved that he's not just a robot following his own set of principles. I also find myself liking Yoo Kyung more and more. The scene with Seju in the club is supposed to be cool but I find it funny because the sunglasses is too big on Yonghwa. And, Mirae please tell Seju you're not interested in him so the boy can move on.

Also, it's funny when when Shin asked Seju who backed him up and Seju said he knows someone that climbed Himalaya when in real life Yonghwa's father did went to Himalaya.

Wow, what an exciting episode! Who expected that? And when Se-joo and aegyo girl were turning on the sprinkler, I kept hoping this would be their big water scene where he'd fall in love with her but nooooooo, once again water leads to Mirae.

I'm in love with Shin's personality and charater. He's such a well-made perfectly created character. Right now I'm tired of the two possible husbands thing. I want to get past that because Shing is obviously the guy she should be with. I'm hoping the whole choice thing becomes mot and Mirae chooses Shin...then we see the aftermath...like after marriage and how present Mirae reacts to his depression, if he gets the idea of true compromise.

Thanks for the recap.
