Happy Friday all!
How goes the drama watching? (And life, of course?) I hope the answer to both is "GREAT!"
Just wanna toss a question into the void: which drama character have you always wanted to date, but know deep down, it would be a disaster?
I always wanted to date Ahjusshi from Delightful Girl Chyun-hyung, but well...he's a tad obsessive, isn't he? But hot! And rich! Hahahaha.

I would date Joo Sang Wook's character Minwoo from Giant but his father would probably try to have me killed or banished to another country for it. Plus, when his mom came to my house to slap me around I wouldn't be like the kdrama chicks and would have to probably fight back...don't think that would go over well!

You want to call the police on Mrs Satan and have her husband and his friends at the KCIA come and snatch you?! I think not.
Running away before the parents even knew about it would be the easiest plan and Minwoo would totally be down for it I'm sure.

interesting question. the issue for me is that i can't think of anyone where it wouldn't work out, in some way.(Besides those I only want to have illicit affairs with. Now that list is long!Someone ask that question!). Cause I'd be willing to work anything out, to a certain degree. The only problem would be that those guys aren't looking for a girl like me. You know? Most of time characters are foiled, and who I'm attracted to are usually the lead grumpy dude or the villains whom I understand to some degree and would accept for who they are, therefore, they wouldn't want to be with me.
I think honestly lately the only character I shouldn't consider is Jo Pil Yeon from Giant. Because ultimately he went crazy and I'm a little young, so I'd have met him (as a toddler) during the downward spiral, not the "Seung-mo, meet me at the showers" days. Seriously, my only thought during the show was: "Why wasn't I born sooner, so he would've met me instead of that incompetent wife?" Its maddening even thinking about it now! UH!
The only other guy out of character for me, that could be a disaster, is Hyun Soo in Smile, You, mainly because he was a really nice guy :) I don't tend to like characters that are opposite from myself so it would be interesting dealing with him. But perhaps, like with Jung-in, Hyun-soo would probably win me over. He was a character that was really hard NOT to have a crush on.

Can you imagine Jo Pilyeon in a relationship? Every time I saw his wife on Giant I just kept thinking what exactly it must be like to be with him?! I can't imagine him EVER saying any kind words to a woman. I'm sure her family had connections and that is the ONLY reason he even agreed to marry her.

That is one wicked question! What a fun thought.
1) Kim Sam-Soon was strong, curvy and feisty plus she's a pastry chef (ou plus précisément une pâtissière).
I got giggly every time she was on the screen...but it would be all doomed because she's straight and would leave me for Binny.
2) Go Eun Chan is pretty much the cutest girl I have ever seen in a k-drama. Hard-working, funny and generous. Low-maintenance. All kinds of adorbs.
Same issue as number 1) - she'd leave me for Choi Han Kyul. - what am I saying: I'd leave me for Choi Han Kyul!
2) Kim Boo Ki (The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry) and I would be heaven except for the terrible fights about who gets to wear what from her glorious closet.

Just tagging my boyfriend list on with everyone else's.
- For all those who've mentioned Hyun-soo-oppa of Smile, me too!
Literally finished Smile right now, the extension definitely ruined it. Still love the drama overall though.
For crap dramas which still manage to bring out boyfriend-worthy characters:
- Lee Cho-In (So Ji-sub) in Cain and Abel. *swooon*
- Bidam! Ohhh... Bidam! *clutches heart*
- Gun-wook in Bad Guy (from episode 3 onwards only. Otherwise I even accept the tralalala Gun-wook.)
I would also say a certain Seong-mo (both the younger and older version), however he was too COLOSSAL a character. Period. *whimpers*

Kim Seong Soo's character in Full House
Dennis Oh's character in Sweet Spy

Daniel Henney's character in Runaway Plan B
After I burned through those guys, would move to second string... which would NEVAH include Song Seung Hun because I can't take the head-tilting.

*My Princess*
For the people that have grown in a Country where there is no monarchy or dictatorship, the mere fact of having one or the restoration of an old monarchy or dictatorship, does not make for good politics nor makes any sense for the mind of free people.
The reality remains the same Monarchs are akin to dictators.
In the days of old King and Queens held and almost absolute power, and in their power struggle with the “elite”, the regular peasant was the first casualty of them all, since the monarchy and dictatorships only can survive on top of the shoulder of the masses.
In the drama “My Princess”, we can see the reality of the sentiment of the Korean people when it comes to the restoration of their monarchy, we need to remember that Korea was one of the last Country’s around the world to abolish slavery (c.1894), and wee need to remember that it is estimated that at one point upwards to 70% percent of the Korean population, at one point or another suffer one form or another of slavery during the monarchical years, the drama “Chuno” attempts in a sort of way to shed light about the slavery problem in ancient Korea.
We need to remember that the descendents of the last Korean monarchy are still alive and well, the greater percentages of them live in the East Coast of the United States of all places.
I see the portrayal of the restoration of the monarchy in the drama “My Princess” to be some what realistic, since we know the majority of the sentiment of the regular people in Korea is to never be rule by a King or Queen again, and IMHO we ca not blame them.
Having a King or a Queen makes for good story telling, and for a good fantasy about the “good old days”, but we need to be reminded that 99.99% of all Royalty where bad news to their subject's, they were brutal, inhumane, debauch, void of care for the welfare of the masses, etc, etc, etc.
In the history of monarchs more than one have abdicated the throne for one reason or another, on 10th December, 1936 Edward Saxe-Coburg-Gotha ( Prince of Wales), the than heir to be the next king of England abdicated the throne because he choose to be marry a “divorce” American born Wallis Simpson.
So we know that it is possible for Lee Seul to do what Hae-young is asking of her, but than again all the angst only make for a better drama!
The real implicit and non implicit problems that arises, from trying to restore something that by its very nature its bad for 99.99% of all the people of Korea is more that one drama can tackle, never the less I am glad that in a roundabout way they media is dealing with the subject of the Korean monarchy that left a long and lasting painful scared in the soul of the Korean people.
What is taking place in the Middle East at this moment is a sad reminder of what “Despot” Kings, Queens, and Dictators, can do the the soul of a whole people, when they are allowed to run amok.
P.S By the way I am still loving this drama!!
Lee Seul FTW!!!!!!

I agree totally.
Once the Monarchy is re-established their family rule by default until they are removed by force.
This only works if you have a benevolent ruler, however once that ruler passes from this world his successor may not be of the same benevolent ilk, and as we all know absolute power corrupts absolutely.
A monarchy is definitely akin to a dictatorship, that is beyond all doubt.
Just imagine how impossible it would be to remove the dictatorship of Kim Jong Il II !!!
A monarchy does not guarantee in any way, shape or form, a peaceful and prosperous existence.
In fact history would clearly show otherwise...
Questions of how to keep a monarchy in check, honest forthright and for the people???
How does one control a monarchy that has become a dictatorship with greedy, corrupt and a self-indulgent, warmongering ruler???

Like you said, a monarchy is only (relatively) harmless if you have a benevolent ruler... and even then it's got its problems, the waste of money only being one of them.
The only way to keep a monarchy "in check" is to have a symbolic, toothless monarchy that simply serve as ceremonial figureheads... but this raises the question, why spend so much money and state resources on something simply ceremonial, unless the populace feels it is culturally valuable and an integral part of the nation's identity. One could make that case for England - and yet even there they've been debating getting rid of the monarchy.
Kings and Queens should stay in dramas, they've wreaked enough havoc on real life.
That said, still loving My Princess. Actually I love it way more than Dream High, which I'm not really feeling, despite everyone raving about it. I don't dislike it, and it has its hilarious and cute moments (underwear scene - priceless!) but I find the acting mediocre, and the dialogue unimpressive and sometimes downright after-school-specialish. And I find evil!Baekhee kind of hard to buy. Am I alone?

Very true. I was expecting more a parliamentary monarchy setup or a constitutional monarchy akin to Japan's in which the much of the governing power is skewed toward officials, with Seol having more of a symbolic power. Because who in their right minds would want to restore a traditional monarchy and not only that, put it in the hands of a young inexperienced girl about whom(?) they know so very little?
The violence in Egypt, particularly in the past two days, is truly frightening and sad. I do agree that national leaders/governments, past and present, bear much of the responsibility for the current state of affairs. But while Mubarak's regime is the direct cause of the protests, Egypt's problems also go far, far beyond just that. In any case, it looks like things are finally winding down in Egypt (for now), thank the heavens.

not all monarchies are useless. i live in saudi arabia and our monarchy is doing a great job. i think jordan's monarchy is doing splendidly as well. In this light though, i don't think dictators should be aligned with all monarchs. after all, egypt is a democratic country until mubarak got power-drunk and decided to abuse it. so technically, it comes down to how you wield the power that comes with your position. i'm quite certain people wouldn't mind long-term leaders as long as those leaders' main priority is to do what is best for the people. if a country's majority are well-fed and financially stable and if they have opportunities to make a future for themselves and their descendants, then there should be relative posterity regardless of who rules in government.

My thoughts, then--
Secret Garden was such a snappy show--really, I think the only reason it was any good was because of all the small interactions and conversations between characters. The overarching story got more and more ridiculous as things moved along, as our dear re-cappers oft noted.
In the end, my hands down favorite character was Oska. XD Actually, I think it was him before half the drama was over.

Hi!!!! I'm from Houston too! My car is covered in ice and I can't even open the gate because the silly lock is frozen solid.
I'm with you on the drama watching but sadly...I only see a pile of work that needs to be graded and lesson planning in front of the TV as a reminder.

YES! My two kids and I went through a heavy duty Miyazaki phase for months a couple years ago.
They were young, so Monoke was too much, but the rest we had on repeat. My sentimental favorite is Kiki.
My teen had a crush on Howl (so did I!) for a while, too.
My advice on Grave of the Fireflies one is DON'T WATCH! DONT WATCH! DON'T WATCH. It broke my heart and haunted me for a while. I still wish I didn't watch it.

Now I have frozen happy children who've had a massive snowball fight with TV and we're curling up to ... a Tony Leung marathon!! K-dramas don't always win the 'what-are-we-watching' war.

I'm watching My Princess ep 10 with subs. The first part where HY and YJ face off each other's shoulders with their significant others is so hilarious I can't stop laughing. I know it's supposed to be sad, but lord help me, I just can't stop snorting. Just thinking of it makes me want to laugh all over again. It's just so ridiculous! And HY talking to YJ about secret stuff? He's talking so loudly to her for pete's sake! Are the other two deaf or what?
But I'm still loving the show. I hope they'll have another kiss soon, or go to a motel, or hotel, or whatever soon. Or the car, if they're tired from all the press conferences. JUST MOVE IT!

Omo, Its Friday. OT day. I know i post the same thing on Soompi. Too lazy to type and i have to leave for dinner. Just sharing my love for my love for Dream High.
I have to admit it was not in my watch list at all. I had Zero Interest. The cast was "Meh". I thought Eunjung was annoying in Coffee Prince. And Taecyeon presence in Cinderella Sister was negligible to capture my attention. And the other Idols........ "sigh" I have zero knowledge on K Pop.
My Verdict. After watching 1-2 Episode. I thought it was cute. But well, i am way pass my teen sooooo....i convince myself, Why waste time in watching High School stories with actor who can barely act. I thought Jason was hilarious in a bad way. He was so awkward. And i was so tired of waiting for Sam Dong character to be introduced. And his sack dress introduction was such a bummer. Strangely i was mostly interested in Suzy's Hae Mi character. I liked her, and was surprised to see so many negative comments.
After 2 week passed. Read the Review in Dramabeans. With such a positive review, thought to my self. I was about to sleep anyway so what's the harm in watching just 1 Ep, fast forwarding all the boring parts. The Result -> Sleep Deprived. I barely slept, had no idea what time i slept.I manage to downloaded the OST right away.I can't believe it, i check out DH OST while i was reading the Drama Recap and hated it. Now after watching 9 Episode that's the only thing i am listening. P.S I watched the Drama Live last week, which i rarely do.
My Final Verdict. I have found my new addiction. And trust me. I can't believe my self. I am in my Google and Wikipedia marathon session. I have even Googled Mr.JYP. After watching 2PM zillion time in YouTube, i downloaded their songs. Watched their interview in Happy Together. And whatever stuff we get on Youtube. I know all the 2PM boys by now and I loving them. Taecyeon is my personal Fav (not as singer btw) . And Junho and Woo Young(I adore him as Jason but i prefer his real self) comes close second. And little Bi Rain is cute. Yes! now i know who Jay Park is. I have even downloaded their twin 2AM songs. And i found out, the sidekick in Personal Taste was a member of 2AM.
I am sucker for Rocking Love Stories. I still can't believe i just found one of The most convincing Love Triangle after, Autumn in My heart and Love Story in Bali. Yes, i have made my decision but i will be equally happy if the other person gets the girl. This time i am sticking with JG-HM..... I am open to changing my ship.
P.S Like everyone out her Jason and PilSook are my Fav love line.

Me too! I was surprised also when DH finally become my weekly crack after watching the first 4 episodes. I, too, planned to only watch one episode to see what it's all about, but the pull was too strong and I was left wanting more and mowre... I even watched the drama unsubbed, which I've never done before since I always wait for a drama to end and subbed for me to dramathon it.
I also googled every band where each idol belongs too. And found out that it was 2PM who sing the Fly to Seoul song. Which is always aired in every commercial break at cable TV over here. And the guy who I only recognized as the toilet guy in Wonder Girls Nobody Nobody video turned out to be one of Korea's biggest producers?! Seriously, this show really teaches me a lot about K-pop industry.
Anyway, except for the Milk couple, I couldn't decide on which pairing I'll root for. I love the different dynamics both guys have with HM. So at this point I'll be happy if she ends up with either JG or SD. But I'll be heartbroken for the one who gets one-sided love, since I really like those two boys!! :)
My fave character is Teacher Kang, actually. He reminds me of Onizuka and the teacher from Gokuzen (Aish, I forgot her name!). You know, the kind of teachers who would go such length for their students. Always wins my heart evertime. Hope the show will go all Onizuka and Teacher Kang won't have to resign. *fingers crossed*

Yes Nickhun is not there, maybe it was shot at the same time when he filmed the Thailand promotion? At least I read that part when I wikied his profile....

@Portia & Fasiris Fay,
I agree with Emeldy, you should give it -at least the first 2 episodes, well make it 4- a try.
I was tempted to try it because of javabeans' and girlfriday's excitements. I never read the full recaps btw, I only read the first introduction paragraph.
What made this show a crack for me is because it is set in youth, and the main plot revolves around how these kids strive to achieve their dreams so there's a lot of characters' development that keeps me engaged -maybe because I'm getting old and this type of story reminds me of the idealist me back when I started high school-. The love lines were just there to add dynamics to the series. The introduction of K at the beginning was also one plot that keeps me engaged. The story is handled pretty well, unpredictable on some parts and there was never a dull moment. Then, you get the singing and dancing as a treat! If u like Step Up and other dancing movies, you'll likely to enjoy DH. O yeah, and if u like MC Hammer, you will also like this show! ;)

I honestly don't think DH is THAT great. I can see why people do. But I'm not exactly behind the main character yet. I AM, however, totally in love with Pil Sook. She's what keeps me coming back. There are definitely great moments, but overall, I'm not addicted to DH as others. I watch mainly for Pil Sook and the singing and dancing.
I will disclose that I'm only up to Ep 7, so there's more to watch and there could be a moment of revelation for me, where I realize that I do like it more than I thought. It happens, but not usually so late in the game for me.

I'll be honest:
Ep. 1 kind of sucked.
Ep.2 has a distinction in my head for not sucking as hard.
I liked Episodes 3-5.
I was hooked by Episode 6.
Ep. 8 and 9 were some of my absolute favorites, and I watched them before they were subbed, twice, because I couldn't wait and then I watched them subbed. I watched the last part of Episode 8 a fourth time, and then just watched Episode 9 again.

*Dances around in the Friday Open Thread*
I spent two days stuck in my house this week due to a snowstorm that hit the middle of America...definitely glad to be out and about again, even if it means I have to work.
Happy today because last night I:
A. Got to watch episodes 9 and 10 of My Princess
and
B. Got to talk on the phone with the boy I love, who is living in Korea now
All in all, a pretty good evening.
My Princess is just so enjoyable, to me...I look forward to its frothy romance, and somehow even when it's serious and dramatic I always feel like giggles are just around the corner. That...and hotness. :D

Every time Changmin comes on screen, my mind is saying, "I hate you I hate you I hate you,"
and everytime Joo Sang-wook comes on screen, I'm saying "I love you I love you I love you."
There is NO WAY a woman would choose Changmin over Joo Sang-wook. A young girl, maybe.

Happy Friday, kids!
Paid my tuition for my course in Korea and applied for my dorm yesterday, so I'm definitely going. :D I'm planning on flying up to NYC on my way out of the country to visit my old roommate too. She always manages to get into crazy situations and surrounds herself with awesome people, so that should be a lot of fun.
On the drama side of things, I'm amused by the number of quality dramas I've been watching recently. Flames of Ambition, President, King Geunchogo.. Maybe it's just because I'm older, because I never would've picked any of them up years ago when I first started watching. (I'm still watching plenty of lower-quality fare, don't worry. I love Dream High and My Princess to pieces. XD)
And random, but I'm all kinds of pissed off about Jeon Tae-soo getting kicked off of All My Love. Especially since he's a central character and I have no idea what's gonna happen when he's gone. fsdfdsfkjdshfksdf netizens.

YAY its Friday!.....also yay for having a much better week compared to the two before this..I think I might afterall make it by the end of this semester.....also I did like a 2010 Kmovie marathon 2 days ago (yay for snowdays)...hadn't done that in the last two years and I thought I'd share my thoughts with everyone here:
Cyrano Agency - have to say that I am much dissapointed..It didnt quite live upto the hype that it made. The actresses were both kinda wasted and the story didnt really have the energy that it kinda should have had.
The Recipe: what a wierd movie...didnt really get the point of the story but Ryu Seung Ryong was soooooo cute!
Heart is 2 : This is nothing like the first movie which had dehydrated me...this was more like 101 dalmatians meets Home Alone, so nothing original there but it was certainly fun.... and the cute!....the cute was everywhere, from the dog to the pups to the guys to the kids (Wang Suk Hyun)
Sisters on the Road : This is a 2009 movie and more of an art film and may not be everyone's cup of tea but I really liked its...this is probably the first time I'm really getting into Shin Mina as an actress...very unique movie indeed...the twist at the end really moved me.
Psychic : Another very weird movie....It had a very interesting setup but I dont think it totally delivered it....on the other hand I really loved the actors here...Kang Dong Won was really amazing and creeped the hell out of me and Go Soo character was really adorable.
Ahjussi: The best movie that I saw this week.... I'm not an action movie person so that itself is saying a lot. I think the best part of this was definitely Won Bin....the guy blew me away with his performance. If you are a Won Bin lover, Go watch this now!
ok that's it but I have another bunch that I want to marathon over the weekend. Here's the list and let me know if you guys have watched any and if they were any good :
-midnight fm
-I saw the devil
-Barefoot dream
-Man with the vendetta (Kim Myung Min, Uhm ki Joon)
-71 into the fire
- A long Visit(Kim Hae Sook)
-Blades of Blood
-petty romance
-poetry
-rolling home with the bull
-Quiz King

Sorry to say I am also piling onto to the 'Cyrano Agency didn't cut it for me'. I actually felt bored a third through the movie, never a good sign. Which is awful, really, considering the hot lead (drool) and the cute setup, but the execution ended up a bit bland for me. Can't quite put my finger on why.

I agree, Kang Dong-won was the creepiest creeper to ever creep in Psychic. But he was amazing and I totally forgive him for it. XD Also, I loooooooved Go Soo's foreigner sidekicks, they were hilariously adorable.
Cyrano Dating Agency was good in that it introduced me to Daniel Choiiiiiiiiii who is the cutest man to ever cute. I love awkward boys. ♥ But yeah, the actresses were wasted; I never understood why Lee Minjung's character was so special. :/ But it was a fun watch, and if a guy had taken me on a date to see it I probably would've counted it a good evening. :)
Ahjusshi wasn't that great in terms of plot, but Won Bin was all kinds of angsty hot, and the little girl was cute. And Secretary Kim freaked me the hell out with his craziness because I was so used to him being cute and awkward, not sociopathic. XD

I saw 71: Into the Fire... (I know, everyone is soooooo shocked.) It's got my hubby T.O.P in it, and so I might be a little prejudiced.
I thought it was great. I was crying in 15 minutes, and then riveted to the screen for the remaining time. It is really intense, and it has a pretty good story line.

I loved Cyrano (though I agree with you that the actresses are wasted here)! It was better than most mainstream romantic comedies (BROmantic comedies don't count) that have come out recently both in the US and Korea.
I was a bit upset at how unethical the agency was, but since the movie addressed the consequences, I became a happy camper and plan on watching it again someday.

Yes, yes, yes. This cast is so good right out of the gate .... I can't believe it. In some ways it doesn't feel like Skins in that the writers aren't reveling in their edginess, and the characters aren't all dark, broody, and troubled. It's just candy-colored and fun. I really want to talk about how much I love the changes they made in detail but it'll spoil the episodes. I do whole-heartedly recommend making the time to at least try the first two episodes. It's so good compared to the mess of last series that you'll have whiplash.

Happy Friday and Happy Lunar New Year to everyone~!!
Since I'm not near my family, I had a wonderfully fantastic dinner with my friends last night to celebrate the Year of the Bunny :D Complete with Momofuku Crack Pie~! Well, the homemade version at least :) It was cracktastic and now I'm definitely craving more lol :D
Totally craving more eps of Dream High and My Princess!!!! 2 shows that totally caught me by surprise by how much I'd enjoy them. It's turning out to be a pretty good 2011 so far :P

crack pie is basically everything bad you use in baking... in one pie. it's very simple to make but takes 3 days because everything needs to set for a billion hours at each step haha. mmm blueberry torte sounds super yummy!!!
and don't even get me started on DH.. i seriously go back and watch all Jason/Pilsook scenes everyday. their showcase duet is so freakin cute, and their noraebong scene... and every lollipop encounter... and the note trails... and even her smackdown. i love that she is making him take a second look at his golden boy self and he's gonna have to EARN her love now. i love that she tells him she's still his fan and he's so not happy to hear that. i feel that by saying that she pretty much told him that while she still likes him, it's in a detached way not versus a i-think-you're-awesome-in-all-you-do kinda way (even tho u kno she's still totally in love with him lol).. and ya... just siighhhhhh..

O yes. By his manager/producer, I do mean JYP himself.
You can read the article here: http://www.allkpop.com/2010/02/why-is-2pms-taecyeon-so-angry-all-the-time
This really cracked me up, especially when I read JYP's advice to Taec. Brought back the scene where JYP was trying to teach JG a dance routine.

I re-watched My name is Kim Sam Soon and was struck by how many scenes were similar in Secret Garden.
1. The elevator scene (running and missing her)
2. A past accident (car vs elevator)
3. HB is involved in a person(s) dying (above accident)
4. Injury from accident (leg vs brain)
5. Hiking and spending the night together
6. The bed scene (more subdued in MNIKSS though)
6. The triplets (dream in MNIKSS vs reality in SG)
...and probably many others. Its almost like the writer was trying to copy MNIKSS a little.

No.
The writer WAS copying MNIKSS shamelessly. Then there were ALL these other scenes fr Damo, SnowQueen, WHIB... strung together, not tactful at all, and she calls it drama writing.

I made the decision to try and watch Paradise Ranch.
It's still not very good but also (surprisingly!) not very bad. Yet.
I still have to watch episode 4 but I'm already impatient to know exactly what went wrong between the couple when they got married the first time. My impression is that it results from ONE GIANT MISUNDERSTANDING. Which I'm not sure would be all that interesting, especially if it could've been easily resolved with a conversation. But if it goes the other way and is the result of Dong Joo just using Da Ji...well, I'd have to see what they do with it to keep me clunkily following along. I have a hard time rooting for the leads but I think maybe that's because I don't feel like I really get a sense of their characters. If anything, I like Da Ji's little sister Da Eun.
I admit, part of what keeps me watching has to do with looking at Joo Sang Wook being handsome. But I can't deny that he might be a skeezball in this one. Again. (I last watched him in That Fool instead of Giant.)

Do any of you know why the names of the drama has nothing to do with drama?
I mean, for example, secret garden There is no
secret garden there is a Strange
restaurant rather than a garden
or What’s Up, Fox (2006)? What does this name mean to the story?
or Will It Snow For Christmas? in this drama there is not mention of Christmas or snow SO WHAT WITH ALL THIS NAMES?!
Required fields are marked *
blahblahblah
February 4, 2011 at 10:49 PM
I think I know for Will it Snow for Christmas
I think it's a rhetorical question, which is actually implying
"will we reach the epitome of happiness today?" Because
what does snowing on Christmas signify? A white christmas, and who doesn't love a white christmas? There's snow everywhere, happiness, love, etc. So asking if it'll snow for Christmas is like the characters asking if they'll reach happiness.
And OMG the craziness that happened for that drama to
get to that point >.> but I loved it no doubt. Go Soo FTW

February 4, 2011 at 10:51 PM
oh and there was mention of snow. the time setting for the entire drama was basically winter and remember that scene when they finally got together and were in that cabin I think it started to snow towards the end of the scene so yeah. I hope I'm right and answered your question :D

My friends, we have heard your cries.
Clichique, samgetang, YYs.
You mention it on every thread
The Hand Towel’s leaning tilting head
So listen up, we’ll cure your ills
Without needles, soup or pills
Each time you spot it, change your focus.
Use some mental hocus pocus.
The second that you note this pose,
Remove a piece of Hand Towel’s clothes.
Tie and jacket, vest and shirt
Eventually you hit pay dirt.
Who cares about his funny nod?
He has the body of a god.
I promise when he’s nude, by heck,
You’ll never look above the neck.

To all the Asians celebrating the Lunar New Year, Happy Lunar New Year! Year of the Rabbit...should prove somewhat interesting.
In other news, I am so stuck on DH and MP that I actually hate it that it's New Year. Chinese subs are totally out of the question (since everyone's busy visiting and celebrating etc) and I've been living waiting for the English subs to appear (which fortunately appear really fast as well, THANK YOU SUBBERS I love you!). On the plus side, I get to play mahjong, which is always fun.
MP confuses me a lot. I don't understand SSH's character and his allegiances (and the many switching of them) really mix me up. I don't understand if he's protecting LS or doing her harm sometimes, because he's often really hurting her (but..for her good??).
DH-wise, I hate that they seem to be setting SD up for Second Lead (nooooo...my SLS radar pinging...), not because I like HM in any sense, but because...SD deserves THE GIRL! In happier news, I'm so glad PS stood up to Jason and showed him that she's worth more than that. Hopefully, he'll wake up and show HER he's worth more than that too!! AND THEY CAN BE TOGETHER FOREVER!!!!...I LOVE them. IU's turning out to be wonderfully adorable, and has tonnes and tonnes of talent. I actually liked her more before she turned all skinny, because she was soooo super adorable there. The new PS is...less funny. Can't wait to see where Episode 10 takes us...and I really wish they could've extended it by 1 episode. Sigh. I'm so reluctant to part with them...

OMG Samgetang, you ATE a poor rabbit? But rabbits are so cute! They hop about, and sing and dance and prance about carrying baskets of carrots in Cartoonland! They speak in cute bunny voices! I had a pet rabbit! It died a natural death, I assure you.
I once saw a deskinned rabbit for sale in the supermarket. I almost puked. It still had its bunny shape; it was just skinless. I was quite traumatised after that incident.
An uncle once stoned a poor squirrel to death in my granny's house; my granny had a huge guava tree behind her house, see. My uncle took a catapult and stoned it to death. Then he cooked the squirrel - stirfried with sesame oil and black soy sauce I believe. I happened to be there and walked past him feasting on the once-upon-a-time squirrel, and this is the most memorable part; he looked up at me with his mouth full and asked, "You want some squirrel? Delicious!" The uncle is long gone but I still remember that moment. Another traumatic experience for me.
I've eaten snake meat before though. Yummy. I don't like snakes so it's ok. And for CNY eve dinner, I had shark fin's soup. Felt guilty about contributing to the extinction of wildlife, but I still ate it.

sorry YY...i didn't know it was rabbit until i finished the whole dish ;-( and after i already declared how delicious it was.
and yes, i also have pet rabbits when i was in my teens. we called them cheska and chicko, short for francesca and francisco :-) they were my small brother's pets actually. they also died a natural death.
no snake dish for me, please. but they say its meat tastes like chicken? arrggghhh....

Happy Chinese New Year and Happy Friday, everyone!
I'm finally going to see Dawn Threader, which I'm not sure was actually decent or not. It was the least entertaining book for me, so my hope is just that I enjoy the film more than what I read.
On the drama reel, I think I'm only watching two Kdramas faithfully, My Princess and Sign. I'm also watching Athena(4 or 5 eps at time). I just started Dream High so we'll see about that one. At this point, I'm just trusting all you out there that are passing the crack pipe. Its hilarious to read all the "I never thought I'd love this drama" posts. They are everywhere. I'm going into it knowing that crack is dangerous and the smartest individuals, can end up butt-naked scratching their necks. And yes, that could be me once I get through it. I'm on ep 4, so I'm breaking until more eps are subbed. I have no intention of catching up to airing episodes.
So far, I've really enjoyed JYP. I was surprised how there seems to be no trace of his actual personality. Taecyeon is precious and Soo-hyun remains the only reason I am even watching. I have zero sympathy for Hye-mi and Pilsuk is too cute. Also, I might be sick if Hye-mi ends up with Sam-bong. I will never forgive Show for that.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! And JB thanks for another great week of caps and news. Great song of the day!

You asked me to check back, so here I am.
Hot Gimmick validates my decision to stop reading mangas since nothing good ever comes out of Japan in the last decade. NOTHING. I miss the quality mangas of my youth.
This manga was offensive, truly, I spent the entire time wanting to bean the heroine, kick the hero between the nuts, bitch slap the 2nd guy, and shake some sense into fauxcesty brother. Get the hell out of there, only normal and decent character in the book, oh Shinogu!
Ugh, what a waste of my time and money. *is bitter*
If you want to read a heady, insanely epic manga, do either 7 Seeds or Basara (LoTR in Japan). Imma going to reread that this weekend for what story-telling can be.
Even for standard shoujo fare, Hot Gimmick truly sinks so low as to even make me flabbergasted as to what the point of this entire story was? Oh god, want to go scrub my brain now.

You read the last one, didn't you? I told you not to.
Eh, I've really been having a hard time getting into manga like I used to. I liked Nana, but I haven't felt compelled to buy anymore since issue 10. Paradise Kiss was okay.
I really do miss Marmelade Boy and Hana Kimi type mangas, though.
A lot of my former students really dug Vampire Knight.... and as there are many teachers who swear that the kids in Memphis don't know how to read that should say something.

My husband is the one who really got me into manga... albeit we are not into the same types of manga. He has a whole lot that he bought when he was living in Japan, and I have to go and find translations for. (I speak more Japanese than any other Asian language... but I completely suck at it and I need help on every sentence.) I don't think that I have anything older than Marmelade Boy, and he has copies galore of Dragon Ball Z that I skim through occasionally.

I actually picked up Hot Gimmick because it was supposedly about the "deeper side of society"...whatever that meant. And then it was just a train wreck of wtf. I think I was one volume away from the finale when I finally decided enough was enough. I used to read a lot of shoujo in high school. It was my drama-crack equivalent back then. Now I hardly read them. I'm patiently waiting for Skip Beat to finish its run so that I can read it in one sitting though. I also tried finishing Absolute Boyfriend, but somewhere along the way I also dropped it. Some of my favourites were
-Hana Yori Dango (Soooooooo gooooood!)
-Tokyo Crazy Paradise (I love gender-bender plot devices!)
-Mars (my mangaka in terms of drawing style!!)
-Angel Sanctuary (The drawings were so beautiful!!)
and lastly.... Parfait Tic! Okay, fine maybe up to volume 8 for Parfait Tic because Fuuko turns into the world's biggest crybaby and the story gets draggy. But Team Daiya all the way!!!! Also, I'm waiting for the currently airing TWdrama Love Buffet based on it to finish so as to also watch in one sitting. But I'm lowering my standards to next to nil with regards to TWdrama since they're almost all idol dramas and I had previously sworn off all TWdrama for a while because of the non-ending that was Hana Kimi. It hurts my brain even just thinking about the hours I wasted trying to comprehend that drama's popularity. At this point in the game, Black and White 2 (which I hope they are still making...anyone know about this?) is the only TWdrama that can win me back as a viewer.

Now I will say that MARS and I spent many hours together when it comes to manga. In fact, it was one of the reasons that I got into watching Asian Drama in the first place, beyond the Taiwanese version of F4.
The first drama I ever watched (I think) was Tramps Like Us, or Kimi wa Petto. I guess it's going to be redone in Korea soon? I hope so, 'cause I love it to death.

Yay for the Tokyo Crazy Paradise mention!!! I wonder how close the manga's depiction of 2020 will be to real life! Time has flown by way too fast!
I love Skip Beat for the strong heroine but the story just meandered these past 2 years. Still, it's better than like 99.9% of the shoujo manga out there.
Ughh, Parfait Tic! I remember being so in love with it and with the artwork, but yeah after volume 10 or 11, fuuko and ichi annoyed me. They should just all stay single.
regarding TW dramas: I heard Autumn Concerto is really good. Not your typical idol/adapted-from-a-manga fare. I am afraid to start it though after being burned by a ton of bad tw dramas lately.

Autumn Concerto is actually one half of the Taiwanese dramas that I've watched recently. The other would be Summer's Bubbles... but I can't remember if I finished that one? Or if I did it made me so mad that I purposefully forgot it?
Autumn's Concerto was adorable for the little kid and it was hot because of Van Ness and I liked the heroine... although she got kind of cowardly in the middle there. In fact, I might go watch it again. Tonight. Or right now.
mud
February 4, 2011 at 7:10 PM
Wait...Autumn's Concerto is based on a manga? I just googled it and the wiki page makes no mention of an adaptation so I'm guessing you meant Love Buffet.
And I totally feel your TWdrama pain. Seriously, I want to enjoy them, I reallly do!!! I mean, aside from trying to practice my Mandarin I just adore all that fluffy manga love. But then I remember that which was Hana Kimi and the pointlessness of it all. Also, I confess I could never get into Fated to Love You nor It Started With a Kiss. For both of them, the main girls just irked me with their too-nice-to-be-believableness.
I'm really hoping they don't screw Parfait Tic too much. The first few volumes and the artwork (especially the covers) were just pure love. The artwork took a nose dive too once the story got chucked into the can. I mean, Ichi started out sane-ish (and that kneeling by the fountain and accepting Fuuko for all that she is speech was really touching!!) but then he went all forlornly pining with a dash of emo....yuck.
And yeah, I heard and read about Skip Beat's story getting draggy. I had read the first 12 volumes ~4 years ago but got impatient with waiting for scanlations.

February 4, 2011 at 8:25 PM
Autumn Concerto isn't based on a manga- I just meant that because it wasn't based on a manga, it's sort of refreshing and not typical.
As for Hanakimi, I think the director/writer was banking on a sequel to finish the story, which didn't happen. Never count your chickens before they hatch!
e
February 4, 2011 at 10:27 PM
you should watch autumn's concerto. it is good and has become my all time favorite TW drama. and BTW its a novel adaptation. you can read the translated novel here although its only from chapter six to the end http://subsbymin.viviti.com/next-stop-happiness-english-ver-novel-
you should give it a try :)

February 5, 2011 at 8:20 AM
oh!!! I was obsessed with Parfait Tic! back in my early high school days. I had to stop midway due to lack of translated chapters at that time and never felt compelled to pick it up afterwards.
Love Buffet is...good, and this is coming from someone who's pretty allergic to tw-romcoms. the characters didn't annoy me as much as i thought they would and the drama really captures the tone of the original manga. Calvin is perfect as Daiya, Aaron is hot and the female lead is quite endearing. so yeh, it's promising, but i sure hope it won't go downhill in the later episodes.
By the way, i don't know who Fuuko ended up with in the manga, but from what i've seen in the drama so far...Team Ichi all the way!
Hot Gimmick was a hot mess; i was addicted to it but totally regretted reading it afterwards. i hated every single one of the characters...maybe except Shinogu, who was just pitiful....and the ending was crappy. bleh.

Skip Beat - I always thought the story premise was excellent, but the execution was dreadful and meandering from the get-go. Except for some great chapters in the middle (when Kyoko and Sho finally start having some sparks fly when that weird vampire rock band dude starts to harass Kyoko), the entire manga just waddles around in details that go nowhere.
I would love to hand Skip Beat to a great mangaka like Kyoko Arioshi and see what she does with it.
Nevertheless, its much much better than 99.9% of the shoujo mangas out there (which is such a sad statement to consider).
The TW-drama adaptation is currently dead in the water again. Unless they make it next year or two, I don't see Ariel playing Kyoko anymore.

Today I thought I might try the oppa/wiggle/pout on my husband. I needed the laundry basket brought upstairs, so asked him if he could do this for me.
"Why should I do it?" he says.
"ok, will you do it if i did the oppa/wiggle/pout?"
"What the hell is that?"
"Oppa!!!" (lots of pouting and wiggling)
He then looked rather quizzically at me and even slightly concerned. So I explained the oppa/wiggle/pout to him.
"Please fetch the laundry basket for me? Oppa!" (more wiggling and pouting).
At this point, I think he said something like a swear word then went to fetch the laundry basket for me muttering"Why am I doing this?"

Happy Friday beautiful people! Boy do I mean that...almost got kicked out of my upstairs rental (deserved that one for keeping my room like a sty)...driving down to my brother's today then we're off to see the parents tomorrow, which is good because I get to see my parents and sister and I don't have to buy food or cook next week, but you know how families go....After the week I had I'd prefer to just stay in bed all weekend, but it's the only weekend this month both my brother and I can go.
I'm having a late lunch after giving a presentation which my manager and I edited (read my manager completely reworked)for me until literary four minutes AFTER the meeting started. You can imagine how well it went....but it's only my fourth month at work so growing pains...which will apparently continue for the next 20 (work) days since said manager, whom I LOVE, is moving to a different team and she needs to train me.
but I'm actually excited and looking forward to learning. I'm one of the lucky ones who's job entails almost directly applying what I learned in school, just need some time to breath in the process, hence ranting on the OT.

Dream High: The Hammer Dance disturbed, thrilled and killed me. I seriously stopped breathing for a little bit there (with a gigantic grin-very disturbing when they found me). Of all the atrocious haircuts I have had (of my own volition, sadly), I am pleased to say, I never did the amazing side sweep JYP rocked. Although, he did indeed rock that entire flashback something fierce.
However, there is a little noted beat with President Ma, showing his power, glory, and dance moves to the ecstatic chords of Europe's final count down. Again, I perish ...badabaaba badotdotdaa

So, I was going to watch My Princess episodes 9 & 10. But somehow I ended up on youtube watching old IU videos. And I've never really been into 2PM but now I'm watching all these 2PM music videos and old performances. Ugh, I can't get enough of Chipmunk Jason. And to think, Wooyoung was just here this past summer. T_T
WHAT has Dream High done to me?!

Man, how I was looking forward to Dramabeans!
I just came from Rome, and while the trip was awesome, it feels good to be home - here with you, Dramabeans guys :)....
