The King Loves: Episodes 27-28

Won has always been a victim of the constant power struggle between his mother and father, but that tug of war now threatens those closest to him. His friends’ very existence makes them vulnerable in many circles, and Won is learning that he can’t anticipate where and when they might be attacked. Worse, a tragedy highlights just how dangerous the palace really is and that there are limits to the power that Won hoped would solve all his problems.

EPISODE 27 RECAP

With Jeon in sight, San hides in the shadows and raises her dagger. But before she can strike, Won pulls her away and holds her back as he explains that her revenge will only harm her. Won’s words seem to get through to her as San cries quietly against his shoulder.

The next morning at Geumgajeong, Won offers San a drink of fresh water when she emerges from a wash room. After a night spent throwing up, she heads up the stairs unsteadily with a concerned Won right behind her.

Meanwhile, Furatai leads party that arrests Wang Young and Jeon. Dan runs out in alarm, but her father orders her inside and reminds the guards to treat her with respect, since she’s to become the crown princess.

Back at Geumgajeong, San collapses onto Won’s bed, and when he asks if she wants to be alone or have him stay, she throws the blanket over her head in answer. Won can’t help but observe, “First, you go into my bed without permission, and now, you send me away?”

Jang Eui announces that Dan came alone on foot to see Won, without even a servant to accompany her (which would have been unheard of for a lady of her station). With a backward glance at the sick San, Won follows his bodyguard downstairs.

A shaken Dan collapses into a chair after she greets Won. He chastises her for traveling alone through the marketplace, at least until she informs him that her father and Jeon were arrested by Princess Wonsung’s guards. Won orders Jin Gwan to protect Dan while he investigates the matter. Dan worriedly confides that she can’t find Rin anywhere and leans against Won in tears just San comes downstairs and sees them together.

At the same time, Rin is stripped of his small sword and outer robe in the interrogation hall. Soon he is joined by his father and Jeon, who loudly protests his arrest. Wang Young is taken aback at the sight of Rin as the guards roughly lead his youngest son away.

Won confronts his mother and reminds her that Rin was only twelve years old when Minister Eun’s party was attacked. He wonders if her assault on Rin’s family is because of Dan before reminding his mother that he chose Dan as his crown princess. Princess Wonsung insists, “You made the wrong choice. Jeon and Rin have to go in order for you to live.”

Princess Wonsung insists that her actions are meant to protect Won. He notes that his mother used that same excuse to kick out the former queen and send his half-brother to a temple, much to her annoyance.

Won argues that he’ll use his royal authority to resolve the matter himself. When his mother asks if he’s determined to see Rin dead, Won asks, “Why? If I let him go, will you send out an assassin?” Princess Wonsung admits that she’s thought about it, and claims that Won will thank her in the future.

Dan enters Won’s room at Geumgajeong for the first time, and the rumpled bed catches her eye. Dan confesses that in spite of her family’s turmoil, she can’t help but wonder if San slept there, but San insists that Won considers her one of the boys.

Trembling, Dan manages to ask, “Did my second brother do something wicked to your family? Can you please forgive him?” When San looks away, Dan pleads, “You do know that Rin loves you. Do you not? Could you please consider him and forgive everything?”

San exits the room just as the cook arrives with a tea tray. San takes the tray but stands motionless as she struggles with Dan’s request, eventually throwing the tray to the floor.

San returns to Dan to confess, “I was going to kill your second brother with my own hands. I was going to kill him and leave far away. I was going to do that for Rin… how much more do you want me to forgive?” Tearfully, San admits that many people died because of Jeon, including her mother.

Rin, Jeon, and their father are tied to posts in the interrogation hall as Jeon decries the harsh treatment of a royal family. Wang Young urges him to maintain his dignity, but Jeon doesn’t, and instead taunts Rin to ask if Won abandoned him.

Rin looks up at the falling rain while Won watches him from a balcony. Jang Eui reminds Won that as king, he has the power to release Rin immediately.

San returns home to a worried Goo-hyung, who explains that her father was about to leave without her. Minister Eun walks out to announce that the culprits in her mother’s murder were caught and that they’ve been summoned to the palace. Eunuch Choi, who delivered the news, explains that Princess Wonsung believes that as victims, they have a right to attend the interrogation.

Minister Eun and San meet with Princess Wonsung, who finally understands that San was sent away not to avoid selection as a tribute, but to thwart Jeon’s plan to force San into marriage to finance his plan to become the crown prince. Princess Wonsung explains that a witness came forward, but because of his low birth, his testimony is insufficient against a royal family member.

Minister Eun is surprised when Princess Wonsung expects San to testify that the assassins were in league with Jeon. San recalls Rin’s disagreement with the cart pullers about that very fact and realizes the claim is true, even though she didn’t actually witness it. Minister Eun doesn’t think that San should testify, but Princess Wonsung reminds him that he was almost forced to finance treason and urges San to help not only the country, but Won as well.

Princess Wonsung gently takes San’s hand as she suggests, “I am sure your mother is still unable to leave your side. It is time to resolve her deep sorrow and let her rest in peace.”

The arrival of the ministers at the interrogation hall signals that the proceedings are about to begin. Jeon panics when his father urges him to tell the truth, and he desperately asks Rin to do something, but Rin stoically maintains his silence.

Won intercepts San as she and her father accompany Princess Wonsung to the interrogation hall. Jang Eui keeps watch as Won explains to San that his intent was to find proof of Song In’s involvement in her mother’s death, but his mother decided use the opportunity to get rid of Rin.

Won wants to know if San plans to lie as his mother asked. When she insists that Jeon must pay for what he did to her mother, Won reminds her that Rin will be declared guilty as well. He protests that Rin only suspected Jeon’s involvement, but she argues that he knew the truth all along and said nothing. (He’s not the only one.)

Won explains that the arrest of his family proves why Rin was compelled to remain silent all this time and pleads with San to consider the innocent. San struggles with what that means for Jeon: “Should I let him live as if nothing happened after what he did?” Won takes San’s hands as he asks her to cover up Jeon’s crime, but she yanks them away angrily and answers, “You save your friend. I will do what I must.”

Song In visits an unseen contact at a deserted palace and barely cracks open the doors to a room filled with incense and candles. He reports that Princess Wonsung took the bait, explaining that after Jeon is beheaded, Dan made a slave, and Rin and his father are exiled, Rin will be desperate for a way out. Song In adds that the only surprise was Won’s silence.

San is reunited with her father as Eunuch Choi explains that she will soon be called to testify. Minister Eun suggests a visit to her mother’s grave once their ordeal is over.

As she waits, San can’t help but think of Rin and the times that he put himself in harm’s way to help her. Her thoughts are interrupted when Eunuch Choi announces that it’s time to testify.

When San enters the interrogation hall, she avoids eye contact with Rin. She testifies that she saw an assassin the day of the massacre and verifies that Jeon was also at the scene. When San is asked to identify Jeon, he tries to speak with her, but is silenced by a hard blow to his knee. San then points to Jeon in front of all those assembled.

San is then asked, “Did you see Wang Jeon communicate with the assassin?” Princess Wonsung looks on expectantly as Won’s face tightens with concern. When the question is repeated, San struggles to answer and finally looks up at Rin, who offers her a nod of encouragement.

After the question is repeated again, San haltingly answers, “That day, the men protecting me all lost their lives to the assassins.” Rin and Jeon steel themselves when San glances at Princess Wonsung. She tearfully testifies, “And then Master Wang Jeon appeared, and he saved my maid and I.”

Everyone looks up in surprise as San continues, “What I remember is a man with a snake tattoo. He killed everyone. Find that man for me.” San shakily concludes her testimony, “Thanks to Master Jeon, I got out alive. That is all I know.”

Princess Wonsung sends a withering look at San before she strides out of the interrogation hall. When San staggers, Won runs to her side as Rin looks on helplessly. As Won leads her away, San turns back to look at Rin.

Minister Eun steadies San as they leave the palace. Won worries that she’s too sick to leave, but San begs to return home, and Minister Eun explains that he has a carriage already prepared. Won calls out his thanks to San, but she just looks at him weakly and says nothing.

Won chastises his mother for the attack on Rin’s family and informs her that he will handle the remainder of the case. Rin, Jeon and Wang Young are released from their restraints as a penalty is announced: “Wang Jeon… deserves severe punishment, but under the Crown Prince’s orders, he will be confined to his house.”

Won explains to his mother that he rebuked Wang Young for Jeon’s poor behavior and confiscated some of his properties for the national treasury. Princess Wonsung admits that she’s only concerned with Rin and offers a solution far beneath his station as she orders, “Ban him from entering the palace, and name him inspector general.” She adds that there just so happens to be a vacancy in a far away province.

Princess Wonsung admits that she underestimated San’s feelings and confides, “I saw how she looked at Wang Rin. I saw how he looked at her.” When Won challenges her, Princess Wongun protests, “Do you think anyone would know better than me about how a woman looks at a man?”

Won staunchly insists, “Rin would never look at someone I like as a woman. That is what Rin is like. My Rin.”

EPISODE 28 RECAP

While at work in his office, Minister Eun suffers from chest pain and manages to take his medicine just before Goo-hyung announces that he has a visitor. The butler explains that it’s the Chancellor’s son and offers to send him away.

When Minister Eun exits his office, Rin kneels down and confesses, “We have committed an unforgivable crime against your family.” Even though Minister Eun acknowledges that he did nothing wrong, Rin looks stricken over his family’s part in the death of San’s mother. Minister Eun discloses that San isn’t well and offers Rin a chance to visit her.

Goo-hyung escorts Rin to San’s room, and he speaks to her from outside, “Lady San. This is Wang Rin. Thanks to you, my family lived. I do not know how I can thank you.”

San approaches her room as Rin continues to speak to her door and guesses correctly that she went against Princess Wonsung’s order. He apologizes that he won’t be able to protect her since he has to go far away.

When San asks Rin where he’s headed from just behind him, he turns to face her and shares the news of his new assignment. San wishes him a safe trip and walks past him as she returns to her room.

Rin grabs her hand as she passes to ask if she’s all right, but she says that she isn’t. When he begs, “Do not get sick,” San faces Rin and admits that not only did he do nothing wrong, she knows that he was always there for her when she needed him.

But, San adds that she also can’t forget what it was like to hold her mother’s body on the way home from the mountains the day that she died. She explains that that’s why she can’t stay close to him as if nothing ever happened. Rin watches sadly as San returns to her room, unaware that Minister Eun and Goo-hyung witnessed their heartbreaking farewell.

Won works closely with the ministers to weed out officials who were promoted because of connections instead of skill. Jin Gwan quietly reports that Rin visited Minister Eun to formally apologize.

As Won exits his palace, he gets a report on the state of the armies’ weapons from a general and a report that Minister Eun and San left to visit her mother’s grave from one of his guards. When Won asks about Rin, Jang Eui explains that he’s forbidden to enter the palace.

Rin stands just outside of the palace while Jang Eui worriedly asks Won, “You will not send him away, will you? He will be sent to Jeolla Province. You will be lucky to see him once a year.” Won studies his friend as he recalls his mother’s warning and remembers the look that passed between Rin and San when he nodded at her during her testimony.

A rock lands at Rin’s feet, and he looks up just as Won throws another. They meet under a tree outside of the palace and reminisce about the time that they climbed it to get away from wild dogs. Rin is still amazed that Won was able to fall asleep while they waited for his bodyguards, but Won admits that he was only able to do so because Rin held onto him.

When Rin asks why Won liked to sneak away from his bodyguards, the prince admits, “Because I was with you. You were always there. I realized that your life became a mess after you met me. You gave up places you wanted to go to, food you wanted to eat, and people you wished to see. Everything. You always put me first.”

Won looks at Rin and wonders, “Should I have let you go sooner? Then maybe you would be doing better. You could have ridden horses and shot arrows all you wanted. And like whomever you wanted to.” Rin assures Won that if wanted to get away, he would have.

When asked, Rin insists that he wants to go away and travel all over Goryeo so that he can report to Won, if he wishes to hear about it. Won wonders, “Who will hold me if I climb a tree to get away from the wild dogs again?” But Rin just reminds him that he’s no longer a child.

Won acknowledges the injustice that has befallen Rin and admits, “Who will hide the fact that So-hwa’s mother and those men died because of me? I should be the one to leave for causing their deaths.” Won worries about San’s reaction when he tells her the truth, but Rin begs him not to confess so that he can help her to move on.

Accompanied by her father and Goo-hyung, San visits her mother’s grave. Minister Eun is surprised when Won joins them, and even though he tries to discourage the intrusion, Won approaches to pay his respects.

Won and San look out over a lake as she explains that they are at one of her mother’s favorite places. Jang Eui and Jin Gwan keep their distance as San asks why Won is away from the palace when he’s so busy. He reminds San that her teacher sent her to help him but she disappeared, so from now on, she is to stay with him.

Jang Eui tries to find Moo-suk after he sneaks by, but loses him as he passes the large rock where Moo-suk is hidden. From his spot, Moo-suk watches Won and San.

San explains that her teacher gave her one mission: to help Won take his first step. Won announces that Rin is leaving, and he refuses to let San go too. He tells her, “Stay with me. I will keep you close and wait until you can see me.” Won brushes away San’s hair as he adds, “I have a horrible temper, but I am very patient… I will wait and wait. Each time you turn around, I will be there.”

Minister Eun visits Wang Young, who offers thanks for San’s testimony about Jeon’s innocence. Minister Eun clarifies that Jeon was indeed guilty, but San decided to sacrifice her desire for revenge. Wang Young can’t seem to understand and asks, “Do you mean my son actually caused your wife harm?” Minister Eun prepares to explain the reason behind Jeon’s involvement in the attack that killed his wife.

Meanwhile, Bi-yeon visits Moo-suk in a secluded spot and offers him food as she volunteers details about Minister Eun’s visit to Wang Young. (Oh dear.) He’s particularly interested when Bi-yeon mentions that Minister Eun has been hiding his assets. (Great.)

Dan approaches her father’s office with a tray of refreshments and explains to Goo-hyung that she wants to personally serve Minister Eun as a sign of her gratitude. She sends the reluctant butler away with a servant while she prepares to serve her father and his guest, but stops outside the door when she overhears their conversation.

Minister Eun explains to Wang Young, “I know that every day your third son spends here is torture. What my daughter did upset [Princess Wonsung]. Her future is at risk.” He proposes a solution, “How about we marry off our children and send them far away… I have people preparing a house in Saracen.”

Wang Young explains that because a royal marriage adds the woman’s name to the royal register, Princess Wonsung’s approval is required. Minister Eun is well aware of the stipulation and adds, “Once I know we both agree to this, I plan to visit Her Highness.”

Bearing a message for Rin, Jin Gwan notices a dazed Dan outside of her father’s door. He takes the tray from her as Dan tries to decide if she should be happy or sad. Dan tells the bodyguard that she may never see her brother again, but then admits that it’s also a great relief (since San would be out of the picture).

Song In kneels before closed doors with an update, “I thought Lord Eun and his daughter would mess things up, but now, I have a use for them again. We can use them to distance the crown prince from [Princess Wonsung] and create a reason for Rin to come to us.”

Boo-yong slides the doors slightly apart to reveal that Song In’s contact is the king, who is in some kind of altered state thanks to her concoctions. King Chungryeol slurs, “Rin is a good boy… make Won give up his title himself.”

Song In promises that the crown prince will create his own downfall and that Yuan will have no grounds to object. When Song In proclaims that Rin will serve him loyally, the king manages to lift his head and look at Song In. Boo-yong openly adds something to the incense bowl as Song In boldly declares, “Become my puppet king, and stab your son through the heart.”

Rin exits the inspector general’s office and notices Moo-suk. Armed with his small dagger, Rin approaches the assassin who lures him to a meeting with the warning that Minister Eun is in danger.

Eunuch Choi announces to Princess Wonsung that Minister Eun wants to discuss the royal women’s register. He falls to his knees in fear before he continues, “It is about a marriage. With his daughter, Eun San, and Master Wang Rin. He wishes for your permission to marry them off.” Furatai and Court Lady Jo look up in surprise as Princess Wonsung laughs over this latest development.

A woman dressed as one of Princess Wonsung’s attendants enters the room where Minister Eun waits. The woman lights some incense, and when she places a cloth against her face to avoid the fumes, we see that it’s Boo-yong.

Won keeps a close eye on San as she distributes a pile of scrolls to the ministers in his office, but then Jin Gwan delivers a message that causes Won to run off suddenly.

He’s distressed that he wasn’t told sooner, but Jin Gwan admits, “I did not know he would come so soon.” Jang Eui joins them to report that the subject of Won’s concern is at Princess Wonsung’s palace.

Boo-yong stands behind a curtain until the incense has its desired effect on Minister Eun. When he grabs at his chest, she re-enters the room, and after Minister Eun drops his medicine, Boo-yong picks it up as if she means to help him. Minister Eun gasps, “I need that medicine… please.” But Boo-yong just stares blankly at the desperate man as she hides his medicine in her sleeve and walks away.

Minister Eun falls to the floor when he reaches out to her, but Boo-yong continues out the door as her incense continues to fill the room.

Won hurries to his mother’s palace with his bodyguards as San lifts a brush to write on a fresh piece of paper. She pauses as if something is wrong, unconcerned when the ink from her suspended brush drips and spreads ominously.

Won throws open the doors to find Minister Eun on the floor. He stands frozen with shock as Jang Eui runs for a doctor while Jin Gwan rushes to Minister Eun’s side.

He is soon joined by Won, and they check for a pulse in vain until Jin Gwan announces that it’s too late. Won holds San’s father in his arms and tries to wake him as Minister Eun’s arm falls lifelessly to the floor.

COMMENTS

For many episodes now, I’ve wondered why Rin chose to be Won’s friend when his life would have been much easier, not to mention safer if he had kept a healthy distance from the crown prince. It was heartening to learn that his many sacrifices over the years were not lost on Won when he acknowledged out loud the many ways that their association has cost Rin personally. And Rin’s personal sacrifices continue as Won stands by while San directs all of her anger and resentment towards Rin, unaware that a boy second only to the king was present the day of the attack that claimed her mother’s life. She has no idea that Rin’s silence not only protected his family, but prevented a scandal from tainting the vulnerable crown prince.

Won and Rin know better than anyone just how dangerous life within the palace really is. This week’s loss of Minister Eun underlines that danger in the most tragic way. While Rin was willing to take on the risk to befriend Won, the arrest of his family is sure to have shaken him and he may come to the same conclusion that Won did — he needs power to protect those that he loves. Song In is certainly counting on him to get to that point so that his faction can displace Won with Rin.

Knowing what he does about the palace, Rin may share San’s late father’s fears and come to the same conclusion, that she should be as far away from the palace, and Won, as possible. He’s already accepted the fact that it’s time for him to leave Won’s side and, with Minister Eun gone, it makes sense that he would want to help San settle somewhere far from the influence of Won’s family.

Minister Eun was sensitive to the trauma that San suffered when her mother died and he wanted to secure a happy future for his daughter. Her life has been fraught with loss and he seemed intent on preserving her from further harm. How unfortunate that one of San’s closest friends happens to be the crown prince, because the palace isn’t compatible with a happy and peaceful existence. Perhaps this explains why Minister Eun decided to arrange for a marriage between Rin and San in a move that took me by surprise. It would certainly offer them both protection that they can’t know in Goryeo or Yuan, but I can’t figure out how he planned to get San to accept the idea when she just rejected Rin.

For now, Won faces danger from both parents – his jealous father and his ruthless mother. Aligned with the power hungry Song In and his murderous accomplice, Boo-young, King Chungryeol is willing to become a puppet king rather than allow Won to ascend. I can only hope that their eventual downfall is a satisfying one because those two annoy me to the point of distraction. Princess Wonsung presents her own dangers as she helps Won acquire power. Her ruthlessness reemerges as she admits that she’s considered assassinating Rin to help secure Won’s position. His reluctance to intervene in the case against Rin’s family is in part an attempt to protect him and if it eliminates a romantic rival as Song In suggested, Won made it clear long ago that his priority is San.

Before his death, Minister Eun planned an escape route for Rin and San to ensure their safety and there are enough people aware of his scheme that it’s bound to come to light. Won may be confident that Rin would never pursue a woman that he loved, but what if that was the final wish of her loving father?

I'm super mad at Won in this episode since he chooses not to do anything to release Rin except talking to the Queen which obviously useless to begin with or asking San to get over her revenge. Worse, he just sits there in the interrogation court right in front watching Rin his best friend stranded, humiliated. *Scream at the top of my lungs* How can you stand it Won?!!!!

Even Jang Gui said to him that he's now has the power of King, he could just say it to those guards to let Rin go, but he chose not to do anything and asked San to save Rin instead? I don't really understand his decision? And why would he want to make San be on the bad side of Princess Wonsung too? Is it really because of Rin? If it is, why couldn't he do it on his own?

I think Won should let San go, she keeps saying that multiple times. The 1st is after she got caught by Jeon, the 2nd time is for her father's treatment and now she still wants to leave after the interrogation.

Even if she loved Rin or Won, she really wants to leave and continue her life and she said that.
I feel in Won's mind, he doesn't understand why since he [won] is the Crown Prince and he can do everything for her so there is no need to for her to leave but for San, it's not just for the treatment, she just want to start better, shaping her life again, free from the guilt and freed the desire to revenge.
Won is afraid that he'll lose San the second she left but she was never his person from the beginning, yes they are a friend and they can still be a friend and that doesn't mean Won own her.

There is this blurred line for Won as the crown prince, that his friend is also his subject because that is what always happens so, in a way, he owns them [friend] too and he still using that logic to San.

I got confused in this part as well. But when Song In was telking the King that their plan was working out, and the subjects took the bait except for Won, I actually felt relieved. I think him not doing anything to save his friend despite having the power of a king has to do with this. We'll just have to see in the following episodes.

The Queen is his number one backing in the Court. Won cannot openly go against her, otherwise it would cause her to lose face; and erode the support he needs to run his administration. Rin, also realizes this, so he was not angry with Won for "doing nothing " when Won was obviously working behind the scenes to get his friend released. He knows his friend well, that he's always thinking of plans and counterattacks and backup plans.

Remember, one of SongIn's plans is to erode the relationship between Won and the Queen; and Won and Rin; his two staunchest supporters in the palace.

By appearing to do nothing, he side-stepped the trap SongIn set out for him. He is indeed getting wiser and more politically savvy.

But did Won have any real plan (other than asking San) to free Rin?
He did say to his mother that he's now has the royal authority and he came to her first to save her face but because she declined him now he will take care of it himself.

Hmm, good question. I'm thinking... no? He couldn't just free Rin coz didn't the Queen imply that she'd just assassinate Rin?

That is to worry later, Won can put guards for Rin and spy watching Wonsung palace.

Rin's life was at stake and what if San did testify against Jeon? Wouldn't it be even riskier for Won to save Rin then?

2

Was run up for execution or exile? I thought it was the latter. I think part of it was that a small part of him wanted his mother's plan to succeed (paving the way for San to be his crown princess), even if it was only in his subconscious.

2

Of course Rin was not angry with Won how could he, didn't even dare to think about it. Rin is too selfless. Neither did he think that Won had plans to free him. No, he's ready for whatever might happen to him self and his family. He's willing to sacrifice for San so she could venge her mom's death and finally live in peace and eat properly.
I don't hate Won no never hate him. Just dissapointed in him. I want him to treasure Rin's friendship as much as Rin who's willing to do and risk ANYTHING for Won and San.

That was hard to watch too but I think Won couldn't have done what his bodyguard had suggested, even with his power, since that would mean embarrassing his mother in front of the court.

Missing scenes (I didn't notice them before because I didn't realize that I watch the full version on tv and I only did skimming thru recaps):

- The maid brings medicine for San while she's in restroom and says to Won if only young master Wang Rin finds out he'd come to her. Won looks a bit upset then takes the tray from the maid.

- Bi-yeon assures Minister Eun that lady San only cherishes Won since he is Wang Rin's best friend.

- Flashback of Bi-yeon witnessing Rin's farewell to San. After that San entered her room and on the floor shed painful tears just like when her mom passed away seven years ago. Her heart's broken because she couldn't convince Rin to stay.

I watch on Viki tv they air them as one ep. Instead of two, but I've seen the scenes mentioned like when the inn keeper tells Won that Rins eyes "drip honey" when he looks at San and kept referring to them as bride and groom.. so how the crap can he keep pretending they haven't been falling for each other from the start

The version on Viki (in the US) is the full version, I believe. Which is interesting for me, because my mom is also watching this but on another site, and now I wonder what she's seeing. We talked about generalities yesterday, and she is saying how she thought these episodes are also not as strong or engaging as the first ones.

She didn't even try. She brought up her dead mother and said she would think about it if Rin was with her. Unless she was just pushing him away to prevent him from trying to stay since Wons mother is determined to get him out of the picture.

I think that we are all forgetting that Won is the one who asked San to forgive Jeon to free Rin. At first she was angry, but later remembered Rin's kindnesses to her and acquiesced. So you can also say she protected Rin because Won asked her to do so.

I have a different view, won asked her to do that in the expenses of herself, Won wants her to sacrifice herself for Rin, San can't do that.

Later she remembers how Rin saved her, how Won told that this is a kind of conspiracy to hurt Rin, remembers that Rin tried to tell the truth, that something is wrong in the statement.

I think he chooses to protect Rin because he has been nice to her and it for herself since when he gets the flashback with Won, it's the part of the conspiracy and how that will hurt Rin and San.
Rin nods seal the deal that this guy wants the best for her and all decision is up to her.

TLDR: I think she does that not because of Won asked her but because of herself but the consideration comes from the information from Rin and Won.

I don't think she helped Rin because of Won. When Won asked her to, she flat out (and angrily) refused. She was thinking about Rin, not Won, when she made the choice to save him. I think she was crying because she was being forced to choose between two people she loved...Rin and her mother. Her mother was already dead, so she chose Rin, but she won't easily forget the choice she was really forced to make.

Won could have saved rin with his power but her mother warn him that if do so he might not see rin again. She will assassinate rin the best choice is San to protect them.

That crying scene can also be interpreted different way... Wonsan shippers said that san is crying because she is sad for letting go a rare opportunity to get her revenge. She is sad for her mother...

I'm not a WonSan shipper, but when I read the scene, I also think she cried because of her mom. Maybe she feels guilty for choosing her love first over her mom, so her heart hurts because it's a really hard decision for her.

I think she cries because she feels guilty to her mother to let the bad guy go because of her desire to protect Rin. It not just about her mum cause that is no brainer [she'll choose her mum any day] but also because she can't believe that her heart can't bear to do that to Rin and now she cut ties with him forever .

This was also my reading as well. San has been selfless all this time, acting in what she thinks are in the best interest of her dad, teacher/master, Won and Rin ,and she choosing to save Rin over her desire to avenge the death of her mom made her feel conflicted. It made San feel that she betrayed her mom.

I don't think she did it for Won because what she remembered in the flashback are the times that Rin came to her defense. After Dan asked San to forgive Rin because he is in love with her, San said that the reason why she wanted to kill Jeon and end it all was because of Rin. San also told Rin when he was saying goodbye to her that he didn't do anything wrong and that he has been always there to save her and to comfort her. However, the rock embedded in her heart due to her guilt over "causing" the death of her mom and her guards, is making her feel that she betrayed them for whatever feelings that she has over Rin.

The version that I saw on One Asia shows Biyeon telling Minister Eun of the farewell that she witnessed between San and Rin and how she saw San crying in her room after. Biyeon describes San's crying and heartbreak as similar to the one that Biyeon witnessed when San's mom died.

I don't think it was because she couldn't convince Rin to stay; rather, it was because she had to part with him. She was clear in telling him she couldn't continue to just stay by his side knowing everything, and Rin, bless his heart, understood where she was coming from.

Romance aspect :
After I forced myself to watch this eps, it is clear that eun san loves rin imo, and I hope writer doesn’t give false hope to wonsan shippers and ambiguous dialogues again. In intel-version biyeon said ”the man lady san in mind is the man who used to drink with her comfortably” we know who he is…but the k-ver edited this part out ...maybe for rinsan bias, they won’t care about this part, and more focus in what biyeon said afterward.. but as wonsan bias, this part is very important. When biyeon saw lady san crying, her POV at that time could be wrong imo... but I don't want to debate this issue :) I thnik it is better to have the OTP confirm before second last episode because TKL isn’t reply series..haha
Wang dan is selfish princess.... I don’t want her end up with won T.T
Wang rin is a perfect guy.
Wang won character’s development is the biggest problem for me... what he has said is different from what he did.. he should be obsessive but here he is like a matchmaker for rinsan LOL idk who is Won anymore XD
I think I wll drop this for a while, sorry TKL beanies XD

So... You don't think Won forcing San to stay when she wanted to spend more time with her father, letting Rin get all the blame when he is also partly guilty (for not telling San that he stopped Rin to get help when she and her mother was going to get ambushed), not trying to help Rin when he DOES actully can let Rin out from the interogation, chosing a girl twice after his bff and letting Rin go to Jeolla province (and not doing anything) because he is jealous - are not selfish and obsessive?
Won said it himself, he is sure Rin would never like the girl that she like. I wonder what he would do if 'his Rin' put another person (San) as his first priority..

I have been pondering on this.
At the mountain, Rin served Won the wine first. After his release from prison and when Won first noticed their awkwardness, at the training ground, he served San the tea first both times. Maybe this actually means nothing, could the difference indicate that since claiming her as his woman, his priority started changing then and had kept growing bigger than Won, as we can predict from next Monday's preview.

After watching this episode, I just wanna give San a big hug and say to her that everything will be alright even though I know everything will not be alright at the moment. San has suffered enough with her mom's death and now her dad? I can't imagine how despair San will be if she knows that her dad died (did he?) because of the political agenda of the royal family. I totally understand when San decided that she can't face Rin and his family anymore because of her mom's death, so I wonder how San will react toward Won, now that it's because of the King (presumably San would think it's the Queen) that her dad (probably) died. I assume that Minister Eun has died, but I'll wait for a proper confirmation because we never know, in dramaland, anything can happen.

Even if Minister Eun survives, he'd think the Queen wants him dead, which add to more reason why he'd want Rin and San to leave. I'm trying my best not to hate Won, but it seems like his own selfishness that wants San to be by his side kinda ruin San's life. She's more like a trophy that the King (and Song In) and the Queen want to own because of their own selfish political agenda. Whoever gets San, that person will own the power to rule the kingdom. At this point, I really want San to just leave the toxic palace because it's not doing her any good.

It would be a nice ending. It would be disappointing to shippers on both ends but it would just be a lovely ending as poor San gets to finally get a chance to move on from her pain. Both San's dad and teacher, the two closest to her, have been wanting her to forgive and forget all this time and want her to heal and go away. San has had opportunities to do so but, looking at the past episodes, she manages to convince herself to stay because she wants to be part of Won and Rin's friendship, not knowing that the two are somewhat linked to the unfortunate death of her mom.

I love this drama in that what the three may think is the best for each other may not be that as these conflict with their respective duties to their family and society (there is still a brewing rebellion and a power struggle) and to what they ultimately want for themselves.

About Princess Wonsung, I get that she doesn't want Won to be with Dan because:
1. Won doesn't love Dan, so she doesn't want Won to be lonely.
2. She doesn't want the Chancellor's family to have more power. But I thought by marrying Dan to Won would be beneficial to Won as well because Chancellor has the influenced over the ministers?
3. She thinks that San is better choice because of her wealth, so San would help Won to become King. Plus, Won loves San; hence, she's giving what Won wants. But what about San? I thought Princess Wonsung acknowledged the fact that San and Rin have feelings to each other. I also thought that Princess Wonsung doesn't want Won to experience what she's experienced: loving someone who doesn't love you back.

I get that Princess Wonsung has always thought Rin as a threat to Won. But I'm mad at her because she always thinks that she's right even when Won has been saying that Rin's a loyal friend for thousand times. When San didn't do what she expected her to do, I'm so glad that Princess Wonsung didn't get what she wanted though I'm sad for San for letting go of her revenge. I just can't support Princess Wonsung because she's using San's pain and wound to get what she wants.

I'm glad that so far I'm not missing scenes. But I don't really think they are necessary to point out who San likes. They're are mainly moments when Other characters are pointing out the obvious connection they have to Won, so they might as well have left them in since he's already proven he's willfully ignoring what he chooses not to accept. I honestly don't understand how anyone could ship him over Rin. Me for the strong protective silent type.

I disagree that the crown prince is selfish. He has used his limited influence to stop the marriage with Rin brother gotten Rin out of jail. He cares deeply for both. He has always sent Rin to take care of San. Rin always liked San and was trying to convince the cp that she may be dangerous in the beginning. He is aware that something is going on with them. Remember he said at the maypole dance that he was being betrayed as he thought about it later but at the time he was unaware.

I'm always stalking in silent but the latest episode drives me here. This will be my first time sharing I need to release some madness in me.

I'm so mad when Won asked San to cover up for Jeon and told her to pretend like nothing happened because Rin and Dan might suffer from this and San be like 'so what?' and denied Won's request angrily yes you go girl I do the same. But then at actual scene when San grabbed all her consciousness together said Jeon saved her and her maid, that scene makes me cry. It really broke me because I'm very angry for her. I really feel her as if I were San and I need to give credit to Yoon Ah here she nailed it. I know Won is going hard on this too since he can't think of other choice to save his friend and his bride-to-be and at this point I think it confirmed his first priority is Rin not San.

While Rin was all the way to expose his bro to unlock San's guilty and that bittersweet when Rin nodded his head to San to encourage her tho my heart get fluttering, Won let San did the hardest thing to save Rin, even I think Won has reasons but well l don't know anymore how it will continue. And at the end of episode Eun Young Baek came to pass away, this is super tragic.

This drama is interestingly tragic but I can't stop watching. I can't wait to tear myself for next episode.

Actually I think it was Rin's little nod to San, his silent encouragement to her to tell the truth that finally convinced San to drop the matter. Realizing this, she finally decided that she wasn't able to allow Rin to go down as collateral damage.

I completely agree with this, except one thing...she actually DID tell the truth. Princess Wonsung asked her to lie...she never actually did see the collaboration between Jeon and the assassin. Now, she does KNOW that's what happened, but that's not the same thing as seeing it. In all honesty, I wonder if being truthful here will matter for her personally later, since no one can say she lied. Also, just want to say that the little unspoken exchange between Rin and San was good acting by Yoona and even BETTER acting by Hong Jong-Hyun. Those two have both really improved. Siwon has a more difficult role, but I actually think HJH is out shining him with less material to work with. Really impressive considering his past work (where his face was often all but dead).

I agree - HJH is killing his role. On paper, Won is a much more interesting character as his personality has more sides, obsessive, selfish, and lonely - but HJH is playing Rin so well that he draws all my attention with every scene he's in. The suppressed emotion - ugh! But maybe if Won starts to go a little darker, and I've been waiting for that so he better, Siwan will get more of a chance to shine.

It's a big thing for her and the way Won says it sounds like her diminished how big it is for her. She knows she is emotional and Won said that he will be compensated her, I mean it's not that.

I like how she remembered all the things that happen to know that Rin did try to tell the truth and I love the moment when Rin nodded to her. It's an acceptance that this is what I need to pay, I don't bear a grudge on you and I believe whatever you choose.

I like it so much because it gives San the power and he believes on her.

I can't wait for San to turn double agent and scheme her way into Song In's good graces just to spite Boo Young.

I can't stand Boo Young's character and have started to fast forward whenever she comes on screen. She doesn't seem to have any greater purpose or conviction other than to please Song In, and right now she seems to be coasting on success after success while our poor protagonist trio can't seem to catch a break. This irks me to no end. I detest the character so much, I can't decide if the actress playing her is doing too good a job or absolutely bombing it. I just can't stand her and the king. They're like two caricatures.

Also, poor San. She's lost her mom, her dad and now potentially her love. Eveyone decision she has made thus far has been to protect the people she loves, yet she just keeps losing them. I can already imagine Biyeon doing something to hurt herself after she finds out that she's been unwittingly endangering San and her family. What a blow that will be...

(Sidenote: Did Minister Eun really not take any preparatory precautions to help Biyeon assume her role as fake Eun San? Teach her to read and write? Warn her to be cautious of seemingly suave Men in Black?)

And Won, oh dear Won. Won's actions these episode are approaching delusional and are alarmingly possessive. I understand his concern for San (actually, not really. Why do you love San so much, Won?) but he's attempted to override Minister Eun's decisions twice this episode when he insisted on San remaining in the palace and then when he intruded on their family moment. Then he makes that comment that Rin would never lay eyes on a woman that he has laid claim to. You can really see his privilege and entitlement seeping in and this makes me nervous for what will come when he finally realizes that Crown Prince privileges won't help him win a heart that beats for another man.

wow thanks, I understand why Won thinking like he does and for a long time, he always gets what he wants, even not instantly.
Imo, won has the mindset that he'll be the king and get what he wants like his father say "why don't you just wait, it will be yours anyway" and use that mindset to a long of things.
He believed everything will be his at the end of the day as it always be and promised to him. It just he never looked that from another point of view.

Oooh I would love it if San goes double agent. I doubt it would work though, Song In doesn't have much reason to trust her. Rin could be a double agent, but he's supposedly such a terrible liar (and too upright), that I don't see that working either.

Your comments about Won are spot on! Even though he's had evidence of Rin and San's feelings for each other pointed out by almost everyone and has seen them first hand, he still brushes it off for 2 reasons: he doesn't think Rin would ever act on them, and he's the Crown Prince, so of course San will love him. Looks like both of those will be proven wrong, which is the most likely thing to push him over.

I think in the romance part, San indeed like Rin more but the emotional baggage is too heavy for her.
For years she yearns the justice for her mother but the second she finds it, she needs to hurt the person that comes to her heart. She can't do it.

For the crying reason, I think she is tired since both options will hurt her. She can't choose between Rin and her mum [especially when her dad already wants to let go]. She cries because she feels guilty to her mother to let the bad guy go because of her selfish desire to protect Rin.

This was a very sad episode.. I was sad when Rin is stripped from his robe, his expression when he gave San an approval look (he let his family ruin for her) and his sad face when he said his farewell to San. Rin continues to be so selfless, when he ask Won to help San move on and make her happy.. Even Won said that he know Won also guilty for not letting Rin asked for help 8 years ago. Rin get all the blame for his family and also Won.
On happy note, Rin continues to be a fashionista in Georyo... His olive green and red-silver outfits are gorgeous!

Questions:
1. How did Booyoung manage to get into princess WS's palace?
2. How long WS let San's father wait, for Song In to order BY infiltrate WS's palace and kills San's father? Hmmm..
3. Why didn't Won interogate Jeon? I am sure Jeon will spill the bean about Song In part in the ambush.. and thus clear Rin's family name and Rin's punishment?

I think Won can interogate Jeon secretly.. After San's testimony, Jeon is put under house arrest, isn't it? They can interogate him to find out who's the real culprit, especially regarding Jeon's norigae who was stolen for him. I think if Jeon knows that his norigae is considered as an evidence that put him as the main culprit, he would definitely spill the bean. It might be that the Queen has no intention on meeting Minister Eun, but that annoying eunuch who works for Song In might set up the meeting and let Boo Young enter the room. I still can't figure out Song In's plan to use San to make Rin to be on their side, but it seems like the first step is to frame Princess Wonsung as the perpetrator to San's father's death.

2

I figure the plan is to frame make Rin believe that the Queen is all out for him and will take anything she can from him FOR Won.

Her father is on his way to ask marriage and the Queen wouldn't want that. Therefore she punished San's father so she can be married as the Queen's wants.

Anything about San provoke a reaction from Rin and Won but they can't harm San cause if San died, the guys will have no reason to fight but probably bonded to avenge her death so the only possibility is to hurt her.

In Song in mind, if San wants to avenge her father death, Rin will help her even if it's against Won.

Well the most immediate perk of swinging Rin to his side would be to destroy Won's support system. Rin has always been Won's counter-balance and his presence has kept Won's scheming, destructive side from consuming him. Song In also knows that San is in love with Rin and destroying the Rin-Won alliance would give Rin reason to openly pursue San, further damaging Won. It would also ultimately push Won to be more like his dad - insecure, paranoid and suspicious of everyone around him who could pose a threat to his power.

Also, I think that Rin is actually a potential candidate to be the next King, should Won be ousted from his position. Breaking Won and Rin's relationship will not only sway Rin to Song In's side but will also make him more open to becoming Song In's puppet king.

FINALLY WE CAN COMMENT. I was so excited to discuss these eps but then the post had a glitch for like 12 hours and I kept refreshing and refreshing to see if it was fixed already. I see the recap itself still isn't fixed but at least the comments section is up and running. This place has been a haven as other places have succumbed to toxic shipwars.

Anyway, this week's episodes were hard to watch for me as we reach that stretch where everything just seems to go wrong for Rin, San, and Won. Seriously, they cannot catch a break, especially San. Poor poor San who does everything for the people around her and is dealt with life's blows time and again.

Nevertheless, watching these episodes made me realize one of the things I really love about this drama, which is there is always a pay-off. I can handpick only a few k-dramas where the scenes and characterizations are painstakingly set up over the course of several episodes that just build and build into amazing pay-offs. There is always a pay-off, and the set-up and journey to that pay-off is so rewarding. Take San, for example. Her life has been defined by her need for revenge, which is the one thing that makes her stupidly reckless. Bit by bit she has uncovered the conspiracy surrounding her mother's death, until it finally came to a head in the previous episodes. Then, now, she is given her revenge--her sole driving force--in a platter. The old San would have single-mindedly taken it; but this San, who has been touched by Rin and Won, and who has lived her life to make others happy, chooses to let go of her revenge. But she is mature enough to realize that she cannot let go of the hurt completely, which makes her conversation with Rin so heartbreakingly beautiful.

I am firmly on the RinSan romantic ship, but I love how the friendship between Won, Rin, and San has been developed, and how this friendship continues to be the driving force of their actions. I particularly like how flawed all of them are, yet they are so real that you can understand their motivations and their actions remain true to character. I've said it before and I'll say it again: these characters feel really lived. I would say the same even for the supporting characters, though not all of them (King, Booyoung, Minister Song, Susagong)

Now I can rant about how much I lovehate this show. I am a rinsan shipper and I am getting the vibe that the show is on the path of setting rin as a bad character, cos he would eventually join song in to protect his family and then Gbam! They would do a redemption arc with him and he would come back to won and san, who by the way would have been lovers by then cos well the twist HJH was talking about is won and san relationship and how rin would sacrifice his happiness for them. Then a great chemistry would go to waste as it always goes in most dramas where the second lead has more chemistry with the female lead. Am so angry and confused about this show.

Yeah... I feel the same way as you. The show starts to switching gear and make Rin do something bad imo... which is unlike Rin at all. Even if Rin do something not right, he would do it to protect someone (San or Won). He has been so selfless all this time, and I can see him sacrificing himself for the people he loved...
Please show, if you're going to make us ship WonSan... please do it right. Coz right now, Won doesn't deserve to be with san. Even without Rin in the picture, he still does not deserve her love... ??

yeah I can see Rin become that way and that kind of sad. He has a firm resolution like being a friend and being loyal so I can see how firm he is if he wants to strike Won. Then we know Rin like clear information and he'll be looking for that too. I have the thought that Rin will die to protect Won so it finished [especially since he is fictional] and if they really need to make a pairing, there are no other people left.

But then I have trouble with San and Won relationship. It's not that I am against them, I just can't see them together. It feels like San will be better alone, she is fine, even without Rin and Won.

I can't make sense if Won don't change to a very different approach regarding San because all Won did, never really moves San's heart imo. When he asked her to stay, he needs to take a long time, bait with her mother news and] and the reason is because of him [Won's desire].

I just can't help to compare with how Rin says that she can stay for a good memory in the party because Rin's reasoning is inherently for her too and not just for other people desire.

Yeah. The preview already hints at Rin doing something "selfish" this time by putting San and his feelings for her first. He is even apologizing to his dad for what he deems would be a treasonous act. If WonSan are end game, they will most probably give Won a huge redemption arc towards the end. I think the story will be how Won's love for San, who he says he loves more than himself, will teach him sacrifice and selflessness, thus transforming him into a good King. We just don't know if this means they will end up together, he gives way to RinSan or he sets San, who he considers as a bird that he wants to be put in a large and beautiful cage, free.

I am worried about this too, but there are only 6 episodes left and I feel like going the route of making Rin bad and giving Won a big redemption arc would completely undermine the story that's been building. The last 2 episodes really showed just how strong Rin and San's feelings for each other are, and how willing they are to sacrifice for each other. But - Rin let her go, and he still wants happiness for both San AND Won. So I can't see him suddenly jumping ship to Song In's team. That, and San hasn't show romantic interest in Won at all. She friendzoned him a long time ago and keeps showing that she only wants to be his friend.

My hope for the end is that after Won goes all angsty and crazy, he redeems himself by suddenly starting to care about the country and becoming a good king. As it is, he's said he only cares about San and Rin, so his growth should be letting them go and be happy together, and becoming a good king. I am going to be SO DISAPPOINTED if the show wipes out Rin's selflessness and San's independence and feelings for Rin by making her fall for Won out of nowhere. Or worse yet, if Rin dies and she stays with Won by default.

I'm already imagining the undoing of our bromance in flames, and my heart can't take it. No one has really mentioned Won and Rin's scene by the tree. It was so simple but told us so much about their relationship. The innocence we saw from Won in the first episode is gone. I still love that cheeky image of him behind Rin when Rin steps up and asks San to help them just prior to going up the mountain. I miss that Won. Won's whole world was Rin. Rin protected him, never asked for anything in return, not even for Won's friendship, which Won gave freely. And the reason I think Won cannot free Rin is because he hasn't really grasped the power that he has and Princess Wonsung is still his mother, and he can't go against her constantly either.

So, Rin also insists on leaving, to Won's chagrin, but he is powerless to stop him, which makes the scene with San on the rock so heartbreaking. He's desperate to keep someone next to him that he can trust as much as Rin. DESPERATE, I tell you! With the palace teaming with spies and double agents, and his mother also seemingly oblivious to her own child's needs at this point, he has no one.

And therin lies the tragedy. He will blame his mother for San's father's death. San will not to turn to him, but to Rin for comfort, as she always has, and he descends further into the depths of bitterness and regret, alone, really for the first time in his life. Love lost--Won and Rin will be history. What I also wonder is how he will respond to the breakup and loneliness. The times where we've been shown the future through internal monologues have been purposely vague. Will he become king? Will the story kill of the King too (even though he's alive and well historically)? Does he finally cage San, more out of bitterness than love, but she flies away eventually? And I can imagine a scenario where neither of them get the girl---so no kiss scene for anyone--but I would think the backlash from both Korean and international viewers would be massive! ? However, if San had been more wishy-washy about her own feelings, she could have had both boys-- Won today, and Rin tomorrow. They could have tried to make the relationship with Won work first, with Won finally cutting the thread that held the falcon (making a full circle for our story arc) and she could finally be with Rin. However, unlike his farher's bird, she never returns. However, I've always suspected she harbors more romantic love towards Rin, while Won has never left the friend zone, so unless Won totally ignores her desires, I can't see the story pushing them together, even for an instant.

I feel for Won's desperateness, too. He's selfish, yes, but his selfishness comes from a place of fear, loneliness, and hurt. And I can't help but think that this drama will be a journey of how he grows as a person, someone who becomes better because of Rin and San around him.

Also, I'm not too worried about the bromance. Rin has always been loyal to Won, and even if he's growing to care more about San, he still remains steadfastly loyal to Won. I think the eruption of a conflict is in store--it's been brewing slowly throughout the eps--but in the end, I think the bromance will remain intact.

I like the tree scene, I like how Won want Rin to stay and Rin just reminds Won that he’s no longer a child.

After hearing all the dialogue Won say about him, it seems like Rin is always there, Won safety net when he wants to do it all and a willing one. If Song In plan worked, that San's father death will set San against Won, Rin will be inclined to save San who is alone rn. Seeing them together can initiate a big heartbreak from Won.

I think in another story this bromance can be saved by a separation but this drama wouldn't let it happen.
I can see how Won will go berserk like your description.

I am hoping that, as this is a pre-produced drama, they have already chosen an ending that does not pander to what the audience likes. I just want to get a beautiful story at the end of the day. I am dreading the broken bromance too and completely agree that once Rin acts on his feelings, it's all over. The only thing I can see that would make him step up would be San being miserable or in danger. Won seems less concerned about San being miserable, sadly. I think the bird analogy is going to come to a head, and I can only see her returning much later, with Rin (at least I hope). Having San suddenly fall for Won when she's turned to Rin all this time would make no sense and I hope the show doesn't try to do that.

No kiss scene - blasphemy!! ;) Yoona and HJH's chemistry is too good to waste. Although now I'm started to fear we are either going to get a forced kiss or a super-chaste statue kiss.

This episode does a good job of fleshing out the reason why the King despises his Queen. Yes, now he seems sniveling and cowardly compared to his wife and son. But you may recall from flashbacks, he was not always so.

It's very hard to like or even love a woman who deposed the former queen, and sentences the legitimate heir, his firstborn son to a monastery, just to make way for her own son.

Viewed this way, the Queen looks very despicable indeed and it's no wonder Won had no real love for power or politics; not when he sees his mother go after his immediate and extended family. But why should the Queen care? She's not even from Goryeo, she's from Yuan, the conquering nation! What does it matter if she decimates the royal family just to meet her needs? (I'm being sarcastic btw).

I really, really hate Boo yong and SongIn for killing a man who was already so near to death. Now San is going to hate Won for stealing away the precious time she could have had with her father.

I think this is where the drama has been lacking. I would've wanted them to portray the King as someone who is somewhat guilty for selling out his country and people to the Mongols just for them to have peace, and thus teams up with the "rebel" Song-in to free his country. Sadly, the King is portrayed as a childish and insecure monarch while Song-in comes off more as a creep than as a compelling villain.

This has bothered me the entire series--how the king is portrayed. His government was stable, at least from what I gather, and he had much more clout than this show would suggest. And I hope Won had the king do have their epic showdown. And song in goes down in flames!

Totally agree!! I think the characterization of the king and Song In is totally lacking, especially Song In. He would have been so much more interesting if he viewed his actions as a freedom fighter, like Moo Suk seems to. But all of the villains (except the queen) have come off as pretty one-dimensional.

The love between Rin and Won is the stuff of legends. But we must note that it goes both ways. While Rin sacrifices for Won and always puts him first even in matters of the heart; Won also reciprocates by going to battle for Rin to protect him even when Rin would rather fall on his own sword. Sometimes I think that the love Rin and Won have for each other supersedes their love for San; else why would Won ask San to lie, knowing it would kill her, just to save Rin? Or why would he choose Dan when he knew San was eligible to marry him, other factors notwithstanding?

I'm also pretty pissed off at Bi Yeon - there's nothing worse than a gossiping surbordinate, who can't keep confidences - and now her meddling and gossiping has brought dire consequences - the second time this drama run. I don't know why she and her father would think that San would feel comfortable marrying into the family of a man responsible for her mother's death.

Won always really care about Rin, he just too brash imo when showing that to San. If he can word it better and not asking San to completely give up but give her an option, I think her reaction wouldn't be that big.

> I don't know why she and her father would think that San would feel comfortable marrying into the family of a man responsible for her mother's death.

I think it because it's the family member, not Rin himself and Rin has been nice, protecting, willing to take the punishment, he tried, he bowed and he is not complaining in the interrogation places.
He was young and didn't involve. I think the father think that it better for San to reach her happiness cause they knew it's a politic facade that cost the mother and they know it's not Rin fault. Also the father probably afraid that he'll be passed away soon.

That's why I like how San responds that she can't stay with him. It gonna be hard for her.

I think, at this point they'd think that will be the best solution for San. They all aware that Rin himself is innocent. With his illness, Minister Eun knew his time is ticking away, and knew (assumed?) that Rin and San like each other. He also saw how Rin came to her defense multiple time, aware of how Rin would protect her. The marriage and then send them faraway is his best bet to ensure their safety.

I think I've already commented on this way too much (I am way too invested in this show), but here we go.

I really loved that Dan was right, and Rin is still Won's number one person. He was even willing to piss off San by telling her not to testify against Jeon in order to save Rin (this shows his empathy problems too, brushing aside her need for justive). Won has become so co-dependent on Rin, and now he's going to try to keep San even more. So it's pretty tragic that the two love each other. I'm sad that Won doesn't have San's love, but I don't think he really deserves it. And most importantly, San doesn't love him romantically. I don't know if she can get past Jeon's involvement and be with him, but their scenes together this episode were so emotional. And HJH and Yoona did great! Rin is just so perfect and so deserving of happiness. Go to Arabia like Dad wanted, kids!

Bi Yeon is such a blabbermouth, and I don't know how to feel about her little loveline. I get he's super hot, but seriously girl. Moo Suk is mostly using her, even if he does have a crush. Now that's a couple that won't work due to past baggage. I'm thinking maybe he'll die saving her or San at some point.

I do want to see Won go dark, even though I like him so much more after these last couple of episodes for his loyalty to Rin. I just hope he can recognize how much San and Rin love him as a friend. Don't break my heart, show!

I finally get to read your full comment, @teriyaki. ☺ I think Mister Eun has asked Wang Young in a past episode as to how Rin feels about his daughter. Wang Young asked Rin about this and he replied that San is not someone that he is allowed to have feelings for. After the interrogation, Minister Eun also made a way for Rin to see San when he came to apologize for his family's unfortunate involvement in the murder. Minister Eun also saw that heartbreaking farewell. In the international version, Biyeon also recounted this scene to Minister Eun and also added that she saw San crying in her room after and described her heartbreak as similar to the one that she witnessed when San grieved for the loss of her mother. Minister Eun put two and two together and thus asked Wang Young, despite the involvement of his family in his wife's murder, to marry off Rin and San and to send them away.

"he may come to the same conclusion that Won did — he needs power to protect those that he loves. Song In is certainly counting on him to get to that point so that his faction can displace Won with Rin."

Oh boy I would hate to see Rin turns against Won for power. Nooo. He's been too selfish all this time and it'd never come to my sense at all. He even trusted San to Won to care and make her happy.

I have to agree that san seems to definitely have more feelings for rin (despite the fact that i dont ship it oops). She never seems to think too deeply when it comes to Won, but with rin it's like one look at him and she's thinking of 6545 things.
But I'm also really upset at won and rin both for neglecting their friendship. Being the crown prince, of course their relationship was a bit unrealistic (just like queen had warned) but still to be split because of a girl. Seeing the preview for today's episode was also really annoying because even though won seems to be really selfish etc, he seemed to always have the most trust in his friend. Like I said, it might have been really selfish of him to assume that rin wouldnt feel anything and give up things for him just because it's what he's used to , but I'm still just upset that all this time he's been keeping it in when won seemed to want him to be more honest/open with him (which is why i think won has got the wrong idea of friendship since rin is his only friend). Maybe it's because i feel a lot more sympathy for won, but rin is just annoying me. it's like he always victimises himself and it's his fault that he's so conscious that his friend is the crown prince :/

Well I am a rinsan shipper but I'd like to clarify something. There was something bothering me concerning the ship so I decided to start from the beginning again and watch every reactions closely. Then I came to the conclusion that San actually loves han in or whatever was won alter ego name. Most of the moments that San has actually reacted were between her and han thing(cant just remember his name) but the realization that he's the crown prince kinda disrupt that but that doesn't mean she still loves rin. She recognized the attraction to him but it doesn't mean she's in love with him. Whether as a rinsan or wonsan shipper,we are all wrong the ship should have been hansan and rinsan. Even the maid also confirm it,as a rinsan shipper I haven't been able to sleep ever since I came to this realization. Cos I know that's the reason why she would reject rin.

The prince is shown to be very clever and to learn quickly how to protect his loved ones while maintaining balance.
If he went against his mother and freed the prisoners, they would say that he used his power to free potential criminals. But if the main witness (San) said they were innocent, then everything would be settled without ruffling feathers, without anybody losing face and without the Susagong's family having a "bad criminal record".

If San didn't comply to his request, and the Jeon buffoon was proclaimed guilty, then of course he would have no choice than stepping up and mitigating the sentence of the innocent ones (Dan, Rin and father) using his power. But the stain on the family would remain nevertheless.
And, remember, most importantly, the queen had threatened to have Rin killed the moment he was freed by the Prince's command.

The prince's political acumen was also obvious back then, when, put with his back on the wall by his father who obliged him to choose to free only one of the two, San or Rin, he chose San. Apart from the obvious reason, "I couldn't stand the idea of her dragged and hurt", he had a sound logic in what he did. So Hwa (San), for all he knew then, was a commoner, and nobody would give a shit about her. But Rin is of royal blood, the son of the Minister of Defense. He was treated like a VIP in the prison, everyone was mobilized on his behalf and we saw all ministers petitioning the king for his release. No minister would petition for an unknown common girl.
This story is like a continuous test for the Prince. One difficult situation after another requiring a clever decision made very quickly, without breathing time. The riddles he has to solve become more and more difficult as the series progresses, the choices he has to make tougher and tougher, ripping out his heart piece by piece. He had to say goodbye to the love of a father, which he never had. Now he will have to lose his mother who was his only powerful ally, and is coughing and spitting blood like Violetta in Traviata. He's trying to hold on to his love and his friend but he sees them slipping through his fingers, ready to leave him. The only thing that he can salvage at this point is his dignity, and his basic wish to do the right thing by everybody - this desire which is the most endearing thing about him. At the end, he will become a real adult, a real and wise king, and completely alone. This series could be titled "The making of a king".
