Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sept. 11-17, 2017

Though School 2017 didn’t leave big shoes to fill in terms of numbers, surprisingly, short-run series Lingerie Girls’ Generation pulled in a decent 4.8% by its second episode. Of course, Falsify finished its run at a high (these days, anyway) 12.4%, leaving The King Loves stuck firmly in the middle. I am a bit surprised about the latter, since things have really been picking up lately—but that only rewards the viewer who’s been sticking with the show, so I can see where it might not be enough to pick up new viewers at this late stage of the game.

While Manhole and Criminal Minds continue to pull in about the same numbers each week, it’s Hospital Ship that’s knocking everything else out of the water (sorry), though again, it’s strange to consider not-even-teen digits as being the high end of the spectrum. It’s clearly on the uptick though, so maybe it won’t be content to stop at just under 13%, and maybe it’ll try a bit harder to earn those numbers going forward.

Over on the weekend, Age of Youth 2 is actually managing to rise in numbers (yay!), while Live Up to Your Name continues to earn the highest among the weekend cable shows. Rescue Me continues to do decently, though I can’t help but wish that it would pull in even better numbers to reward its talented cast. But you can’t win ’em all.

I guess next week will be the end of the 20%-dramas drought of prime-time shows with the descend of Temperature of Love and While You Were Sleeping. The days of k-dramas dry spell for everyone are over.

I feel like javabeans and girlfriday will pick up both shows to recap. ?

I think it's hard for a youth/romance saeguk like The King Loves to get high ratings unless it's headed by a popular cast. Nonetheless I am enjoying the performances from Im Si Wan, Hong Jong Hyun and Yoona. I dare say it's the best from HJH and Yoona to date.

48 hours to heartache ? or celebration ?

I think our expectation of this genre is different from the local Korean viewers. Idols especially are not well trained in sageuks compared to the child actors who grew up doing sageuks over and over like Yeo Jin-goo,Yoo Seung-ho,Kim Yoo-jung, Jin Ji-hee, Park Eun-bin, Nam Ji-Hyun, Lee Hyun-woo, Lee Min-ho (93), Noh Young-hak, Kim So-hyun etc...
Some of them are just starting to play lead roles in sageuks but idols get lead roles with very little to no experience.
I think veteran actors aren't happy to work with them either. Choi Min-soo has been vocal about it beside the veteran of veterans grandpa Lee Soon-jae.
Here is what he thinks of young actors of today.
" These days, there are many young actors and actresses who are not given proper language training, [which is necessary to properly deliver lines]. The Korean language has a lot of synonyms, and pronunciation definitely isn’t easy. But because most idols are paid so much to take part in drama series, the production crew can’t really give them feedback [on their amateur acting]."

This is probably one of the reasons why the older generation are not tuning in to watch TKL but had no problem tuning in to watch "Moonlight" and "Moon/Sun.

(sorry had to delete to edit some).

Thank you for sharing @kiara. Sageuk has been a genre which produced some of the good actors from long time ago. Not saying these idols are not good and not working hard like real actors, but some of these real actors have a proper acting training from their debut days and they take smallest kind of roles first and learn a lot from sunbaes for some years. Child actors like you mentioned have been acting in numerous of sageuk, and most importantly they also got a real life lesson from veterans. Having familiar & established sageuk actors would also help in rating (this is also among the reasons why Ruler got high rating). Moon lovers probably would be able to get higher rating if some real actress was in IU's place. Of course not all of actors who debuted as an actor /not idol are good. Jin Se-yeon for example have been leading lady from many years ago despite of still green and lacks of skills, but some idols probably are better actress than her. Good acting skill is not to be developed in overnight and talent must also be there at the first place, idol or not.

Thank you <3.
I love Eun-ji and IU. I just think some of these idols should do more supporting roles or sageuk specials if they are going for lead roles like what Choi Si-won did in "Legend of Hyang Dan." He did what he could handle (2 episodes) and left a good impression at the same time.

You know, Park Bo-young did only one sageuk but she was so good in it and Song Joong-ki did just 2 but memorable roles that helped elevate his career so yes talents goes a long way.

Just got done with "Live Up to Your Name" ep 11 and I'm super excited for ep 12 yet scared. Ep 11's cliffhanger is killing me. I hope tvN extends the drama by 2 episodes. Can't believe we are near the ending and I don't want the drama to end yet. I'm not ready to say good-bye. :(

"Live Up To Your Name" is definitely killing us every week. The show is just so unexpected in so many wonderful ways and I am happy to be anticipating what to come. Yes, I also hope for an extension cause it simply feel not enough. Over at soompi, many of our fellow friends had to change their avatar over losing bet on the OTP kiss which a lot was hoping to happen in episode 11. LOL. This drama is one in recent years where romance is rather slow but effortlessly lovely.

I didn't mind the romance being slow here. TBH I wouldn't mind if it didn't have one. What I love most is the character growth and understanding between both leads.

I, too, love the character growths we see between the leads. This drama just keeps on giving and surprising us.

Those who've been saying they don't mind if the drama didn't have a romance angle will definitely change their mind after seeing that kiss in ep. 12. Hot is an understatement. LOL

Lol, your comment got me to the Soompi thread and Omo!!! The Kiss!!! O.O

The romance buildup is slow but lovely indeed. I'd rather having my OTP kiss at episode 12 but everything just clicks together rather than they kiss at the first half but I don't understand what they see in each other. :))

The show got the right balance with OTP scenes and their time-travel mystery plus the side stories. One of the best 'fusion' sageuk I've ever watched!

I lurked in soompi thread just now (for live recap) and it was on fire.
First, I laughed so hard when those losing for betting on episode 11's kiss had to change their avatars to a villain's picture for one week and then came the kiss and everyone went crazy. Reading comments at soompi sometimes can be fun. Anyway, the romance build up is lovely and I love the story never lose focus on its essence on medical practice and Kim Nam Gil and Kim Ah Joong really have sizzling chemistry.

I would definitely lose the bet on the kiss scene. I thought that we would get a kiss on ep 8 because you know, drama-rules. lol. I do love that the romance is slow but still so so oh so satisfying. I really love the budding relationship between the leads. I actually don't mind not having any kiss scene at all but I would still take one if they give one ( *ahem*). heheehe. I'm soo excited for ep 12. I'm like goofy Heo-Im right now. Super hyper and excited like a puppy. :D

I am loving 'Live Up to Your Name'. I've not been too thrilled with many K-Dramas lately and the last one I really liked (adored, actually) was 'Goblin'. I'm glad LUTYN is developing into one really well done show.

Same. I worry now that we will have to bear the OTP splitting up since one belongs in the past and the other in the present.

I'm very happy for Age of Youth 2's rise in ratings. It's good to know that more people are starting to notice and appreciate Park Yeon-seon's brilliant writing. If this season does well, then perhaps there'll be more hope for subsequent seasons to be produced. It'll be a shame to part with this cast, as they're perfect for the characters.

I'm also enjoying Strongest Deliveryman and Live Up to Your Name, so the three of them pretty much take up my weekend. I started Lingerie Girls Generation out of curiosity and it seems to be a less warm version of Reply 1988. I wonder if the nostalgia factor that was so important in the ratings success of the Reply series will be at play again here, even with the different style of execution. It'll be interesting to see, and I'll certainly keep an eye on its ratings.

Ratings have stagnated,. There isn't much difference this week either.
My Golden Life is in rally mode an a bit of upswing for Age of Youth 2.
Shakeup will happen when new shows start to air.

Criminal Minds is the least commented LJK drama on dramabeans ever. Looks like no one is watching this and ratings are low too, what a failure. Still can not understand why did MCW pick it, they give her nothing to do in this drama. Literally nothing.

I feel bad for LJK and even as his fan, I can't continue watching because there is really nothing captivating about Criminal Minds. Like some said, a bad drama is better than a boring one. At least, there is something to say than nothing at all.

Unfortunately there's nothing really here in CM to captivate the audience. It lacks the depth on each case, I feel they should show the team working harder to investigate each case. It ends up feeling superficial and samey. There's not a lot to comment on, sadly.

Like it or loathe it, at least Scarlet heart provoked comment.

I feel bad for MCW and LJK. I hope their next project will be much better. I really tried to watch Criminal Minds because I'm a fan of the original but this version sucks very badly. What I love about the original is the teamwork and this version lacks that. And the execution of the cases were done very poorly and uninteresting. I couldn't wait for the episode to end. Good luck to the cast and crews. 2% ratings isn't that bad in Cable dramas right? I thought that if it's 1% and under then it's consider a flop/failure/bad.

Yeah same here....as much as I love the cast and the original the drama itself is executed pretty badly. What I loved about the original was dialogue between the characters and about the cases but it just seemed so bland and obvious in this drama. I really tried to like it but I just couldn't watch it anymore and dropped it awhile back. I feel really bad for the cast but hopefully they all find a better project in the near future.

MCW really needs to get a new agency - she had a good run of dramas until she did Goodbye Mr Black and Criminal Minds is just as bad. I always dreamed of a LJK and MCW in a drama but not like this :( I dropped it very early on, seems like I'm not missing much.

I read this section every week because I like the synopsis and it highlights the shows that perhaps I shouldn't miss. However, because of the timing of the report, the Sunday results are included for as far as I can remember. Can I suggest that you release the viewership report 1 day later to capture the Sunday numbers?

If you look at the competition, Hospital Ship wins those days mainly because it is not going up against any real winners.

To me it looks like people are finally tiring of the dark dramas, or romcoms that have dark overtones. I think a lot of us need happy shows.

What I learned from the CM experience was to never watch a show with Lee Sun-bin in the cast unless you're watching it only for her. Hope whatever they're making on the side for showcasing her while shoving the rest of the cast in the background was worth the ratings drop.

Hospital Ship is a good show. I am glad it's pulling in good numbers. Ha Ji Won is a force to be reckoned with in k dramas. The first few episodes were a little overly dramatic but it was starting to pick up from last week's episode. I am sensing a SLS scenario with the acupuncture doctor. IMO, he has more chemistry with Ha Ji Won than the lead guy.

I wonder if there is a guideline to what shows are in your ratings, maybe family daily dramas not included. I watch All Kinds of Daughter's in Law and it's at 8.3 to 12.4 for Monday Tuesday dramas. Really fun family drama.

I want to like Hospital Ship, so much going for it but for some reason the editing or pacing is not quite right yet. I just finished Ugly Alert (old daily drama) and it was so good that I have to take a break from watching some shows so I don't compare them too much. Going through withdrawal right now.
