First loves and a high school do-over for JTBC web drama Somehow 18

I find it hilarious how a frumpy ‘do and glasses equates to social outcast in dramaland. Upcoming web drama Somehow 18 teases a sweet, nostalgic first love story tinged with tragedy and a time-slip element. The rom-com’s premise sounds vaguely like Manhole, but with a lot less of the zany immaturity and more of a melo slant.

Shinee’s Min-ho (Hwarang) will headline as an attractive, chic medical resident who was a bullied loner during his high school days. He somehow finds a way to go back in time, and chooses to relive the worst period of his life in order to save his first love. This first love will be played by Lee Yubi (Scholar Who Walks the Night), whose innocent outer appearance belies a quirky, direct personality. Her character is described as the hero’s savior when he was an outcast high-schooler, and she also holds many secrets.

In the latest teaser, a melancholic older Min-ho pictures his high school first love as he remembers her, and then we see them together acting all coupley and cute after Min-ho goes back in time. I know this is the hero post-time travel because his hair is sleek and neat, and he isn’t wearing glasses. He teases that they must be girlfriend and boyfriend if she agrees that he’s “bought” her affection, though she counters that he’s getting too far ahead of himself. She narrates that he’s starting to look attractive and that she predicts she’ll keep thinking about him.

Things take a more serious turn when a bus ominously loses control on the road as our heroine’s narration continues, “Suddenly, I got scared. That this happiness will disappear, like bubbles.” The teaser ends with Lee Yubi smiling in happier days and the words “Today, my first love… died.” You go save her Min-ho!

I am all about the high school romances these days thanks to School 2017, so I’ll be checking this out. Although I’m not necessarily a fan of the whole tragic first love trope, it sounds like it will give an urgency to the hero’s time travel that will have us rooting for him to save the heroine and also overcome his own trauma. I find the lead actors likable, and both the teaser and the poster suggests that they’ll have good chemistry, which is super important in a romance. I love the dreamy lighting in the poster as well, with the words, “And that is how we… met again,” hovering between the two classmates.

Somehow 18 will begin its run on Naver TV starting August 28, and will be releasing episodes daily from Monday through Friday.

Dear lord, again? How many shows have this theme -more or less- recently :D

I still don't understand Dramaland's obsession with time travel this year, like other than the a scarce few dramas, none of the dramas have pulled the concept off well enough

To it's credit, The Best Hit was a good show, it's just that the time travel wasn't the good part.

MTE! and storyline, they are not the best either. why can't shows be more original? like my girlfriend is a gumiho or circle? heck, even strong woman do bong soon was fun and original!

I do like time travel shows but it seems like none this year was spectacular or pulled off the theme well. And I wonder why they keep making them too because as far as I know they were never a ratings success. I mean I do get why there anre many law, procedural, thriller shows because they gauge a lot of audience even if I don't like them but time travel doesn't. I dont want them to stop with it but atleast come up with one show that justifies the concept/theme.

I hope that one of these days, the premise of a drama will be:

"A kdrama writer finds a way to go back in time, and chooses to relive the cringe-worthy period of his career in order to save his first drama." Butterfly effect and all. ???

I would rather that KES goes back in time to give Choi Young Do the girl :D

.. or a better girl.
Choi Young Do is precious enough to deserve that.

Actually, that sounds very interesting!
I could picture the writer embarrassed of her own old script and hoping to turn back time to change it..
It would be funny if she meet her young, naive, and cringe version of herself and bickering with her to persuade her to change the cringe scenes.... (the young and naive version of the writer thinks her story was romantic)
*sorry, i let my imagination run wild*

If this drama turns out to be like Ashton Kutcher's "The Butterfly Effect", it would be fine, but there is too much time travelling in the Dramaland right now that I cannot bear watching anymore of that.

Why can't there be a show about a woman going back in time to save her man instead? How many more shows do we need about the male lead going back in time ugh. At least change things up!

And what portal will they use to time slip next? So far, they've already used:
- manhole
- well
- mysterious afterlife glitch

Subway sandwiches might be next

-Incense Sticks
-Brain Fetus
-Talisman

Man they are never ending!

This sounds really cute. And I love the idea of him going back in time to save her. I will also no doubt watch this.

But dramaland, we really need to have a discussion. I know time-travel is fun and quirky and can create some interesting situations. But it's time to break up and move on.

I still haven't watched the previous one - Soo Young's drama. Is it subbed anywhere?

I watched it with Chinese subs, but otherwise I think English subs aren't available yet neither is the raw?

If anyone wants the Chinese subbed version let me know, the web drama was quite nice :)

It was really quite a nice show so if anyone wants the link to the Chinese subs (you can treat it as a raw) just let me know!

Min-ho, my love! So happy he's doing another drama again. Crossing my fingers the storytelling here somehow justifies drama-land's favorite cliche nowadays.

You only can watch RAW. No licensed for all jTBC webdramas.

maplestage.com has the Chinese subs, which you can treat as the raw!
Ahn Woo-yeon has a really cute crush on the main character, actress Lee Joo-young, who acted as Bok Joo's short-haired friend in Weightlifting Fairy :) His crush on her is the main highlight in the webdrama for me :)

I didn't know anything about this prior to this article so when I read that this is yet... another ... time-slip...... for the sake of love......

*deep sigh*.

I might give this a try simply to see Minho in that fluffy hair and cute glasses, though. lol

Someone please make it stop!! No more time traveling dramas for the rest of the year. If they're going to keep reusing the concept why not make it interesting and unique?? Why is it always the male going back in time to save the female lead or win her back?

I really want to watch this drama. May I know where can I watch this with subtitles? Because I've been searching for JTBC's recent web dramas: Hip Hop Teacher and Someone Noticable, but couldn't find it anywhere.

Will check it out. Reminds me of a Japanese movie with a similar premise but in that case the girl was getting letters from her future self in order to save the boy.
