Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 7-13, 2017

We got a couple new premieres this week (the cycle never eeeeeends), but the beginning of the week at least remained a constant: Falsify is still leading the pack, though it’s not upping its viewership by much, while The King Loves and School 2017 continue to take second and third place, respectively. Bride of the Water God 2017 saw a small bump, but it still hasn’t managed to beat its own record (though it manages to come close most weeks).

While Man Who Dies to Live continues to dominate the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot, time slip comedy Manhole premiered to a miserable 3.1%, and dropped into the near unheard-of place where shows below 3.0% go with its second episode. I know ratings aren’t the only barometer for success, but I am sad to see such a zany/fun show not even be given a chance, even though it wasn’t necessarily set up for success by taking over the timeslot occupied by previous low-earner Seven Day Queen. Le sigh.

Strongest Deliveryman seems to be picking up some steam at least, and Woman of Dignity still hasn’t broken that 10% ceiling it seems so close to. As far as other weekend cable shows go, Rescue Me isn’t doing gangbusters (though that’s not surprising, since the content doesn’t seem that mainstream), while newbie time slip drama Live Up to Your Name pulled in a decent 2.7% for tvN.

Live up to your name is the only drama that got me interested so far...I stopped watching dramas earlier this year because I got addicted with 1 day & 2 nights (where I have to watched everything from 2013) but this drama had two things I like and that's time-travel and medical so I'm really eager to see this.

I guess, you also need to see the other ratings data, which is the demographic ratings. This rating is important, as it could tell which network could make or break with advertisers, that help them make money for their content.

Last month, SBS was the most watched network in primetime demos, while KBS2 was the most watched the whole day. However, JTBC is the most watched cable network on both primetime and whole day demos, beating MBC in the process. It's the first time that a cable network had beaten a commercial free to air network in demos. Also, tvN had also double the demos of KBS1 (KBS mngt. doesn't care since KBS1 is a license-fee supported channel. But if a channel skews more older viewers, is it worth their license fee?)

http://news.jtbc.joins.com/html/961/NB11502961.html

So, what does this mean? Although MBC got higher overall ratings, majority of their viewers are outside the important demos. Lower demo ratings mean lower ad revenue.

At the same time, advertisers will flock in to either JTBC or tvN, because they have younger viewers. No wonder why tvN was able to add a Wednesday-Thursday drama line up, because although the rate low overall, advertisers love them because they have the viewers that they want.

Also, I don't see JTBC adding a drama line up in the future, since their primetime schedule is filled with variety shows. And they rate very well, that it sometimes beat the terrestrial networks' programs in demo and overall ratings. So, why change when nothing's broken, right?

"So, what does this mean? Although MBC got higher overall ratings, majority of their viewers are outside the important demos. Lower demo ratings mean lower ad revenue."

Do you have details of the demographics? It's got to be more than just age and even for age, I wonder what's the range for the sought after young viewers?

Does this run contrary to those arguments that a drama fared badly because the target audience are younger viewers who prefer to watch online and therefore not captured by these ratings?

For the ratings, advertisers follow the 2049 demographics gathered by Nielsen Korea and TNmS. This means that advertisers are checking out for a network's ratings in the 20-49 year old category. Basically, these group of people tend to buy more and lead public opinion.

On your second question, it surely depends. Young viewers have their preferred choice in viewing content. Some of them views programs online, but advertisers do not discount the fact that a lot of young viewers tend to watch live TV. Also, there are lots of programs that doesn't rate well overall, but they have a huge following online. The perfect example are cable dramas and trendy dramas aired on the networks. (Weightlifting Fairy would be a good example).

The response from the domestic viewers are also mixed actually. When I read the article comments after the episodes air, similar to the international viewers, they enjoy the storyline about the friendship and family and are always complaining about the acting of LYH and AJH.

@weaselking thank you!

I brought up the 2049 ratings on this same thread weeks ago at the time when Suspicious Partner was airing. It led to some heated discussions among fans.

I can see why advertisers would use the 2049 ratings to select their slots. However, I don't quite see how it's necessarily more relevant or better in any way if we just want to see which show is the most watched regardless of age, gender and other demographics. Am I missing something here?

I think 2049 rating is very relevant. Weekend shows have the highest rating but they never received as much as attention dramas like Goblin or DOTS received, cause the latter have more younger audiances while a big portion of weekend shows audiances are older ahjuma/ahjassi...

1

The question is - To whom is the 2049 ratings relevant to and of what relevance?

Foremost, I thought ratings, unless specified, is simply a measurement of households(and therefore people) watching a show? A drama of higher ratings over a lower one would therefore mean more households/people are watching it.

I totally get why advertisers would want demographic based ratings though. That's why I said 2049 is relevant to businesses who use it to target their advertisement dollars at the desired audience.

How is the 2049 ratings relevant to a viewer like me? Would I feel better when a drama I like is not doing well by the Nielsen ratings standard but is faring much better in the 2049 ratings? I suppose it can happen if one thinks that people in this age group have better taste or superior in some ways to those outside this age range.

1

@persianrose: Not really, in the 2049 rating ranking this year, KBS weekend dramas takes 2nd and 3rd place.

1. "Goblin" 14.7% (ep 15)
2. "Laurel Tree Tailors" 13.9% (ep 54)
3. "Father is Strange" 12.6% (ep 26)

2

"How is the 2049 ratings relevant to a viewer like me? Would I feel better when a drama I like is not doing well by the Nielsen ratings standard but is faring much better in the 2049 ratings? I suppose it can happen if one thinks that people in this age group have better taste or superior in some ways to those outside this age range."

We'll for me it's a sanity test. Like I love Reunited Worlds the most of the Wed-Thu slot. It's only getting mediocre overall ratings yet leads the 2049 group. At least I know I'm not blinded by my love for Jingoo XD. It's appealing to my demo and I can safely say I'm "typical".

1

By the way, I've been following ratings reports from Korean news services, and they provide these information. The link I have provided is from JTBC's news website. Their ratings information is from Nielsen Korea.

When a 11pm Fri-Sat drama has higher ratings that a 10pm Wed-Thur one, you know you're in trouble. I don't know what's going on kdrama-wise these days since I'm not watching any of it, but that ratings table is just sad. Even Nam Gung Min can't lift Falsify's ratings to at least match Chief Kim's. Networks need to do something about this situation and do it fast. Cast better actors, write better plots, do something before it gets worse.

i think we have had some really excellent dramas lately. so its not simply the question of better actors or better plots ... entertainment industry goes through cycles too ... post defendant there seems to be a slump that nothing is working.. which is sad bec lots of good dramas have got terrible ratings recently - FOS, CT, Big Hit, etc etc ... so it will probably take some hugely promoted drama to shake things up and draw ppl back to tv

Maybe they need to mix in some multi-season shows? If a show gets a lot of fanfare, why not take it for another season or spin it off somehow so that the next round comes with a base audience? I haven't seen too many multi-season shows in kdramaland so that's something they can try rather than going back to the drawing board everytime a show ends.

I'm happy for Strongest Deliveryman for hitting 6.5%! I wish more people would tune in Rescue Me because it's so good!

Funny how eight dramas (School 2017, TKL, Reunited Worlds, Manhole, SDM, Rescue Me, CM Kr, BOTWG) that I'm watching right now have low ratings, and the one that I didn't (Falsify, WOD, MWDTL) have high ratings. Oh well, I guess ratings don't reflect the kind of dramas that I enjoy watching.

I've seen the pilot episode of Rescue Me and it kicked ass already. I think it doesn't rate will due to its subject. I guess, Korean people are tend to be religious, and programs that shows the "ugly" side of religions seems to be a taboo issue. Anyways, ratings aside, I'll wait for more episodes of it :D

Looking at how ratings for most current drama, having familiar actors as the leading actors on screen help to increase the TV rating. Or probably to be more specified "real actors". Idols / popular stars not necessarily can make the TV rating increased. I think it is also doesn't only apply in Korea. I myself would have prefer to watch familiar / established actors when I watch drama at TV. Online rating might differ a lot, as almost all drama with high rating at the moment don't have that much popularity online and among international fans. We all know rating not necessarily represents the quality but low rating still hurt. Anyway,
it depends on what these stations want to achieve. Manhole's rating gave a a huge surprise, I expected it to start around 4-5% at least.

Yay for Strongest Deliveryman's increase in ratings! Show is neither ground-breaking nor high-quality, but I'm enjoying it heaps because it makes me laugh and that makes an easy breezy weekend watch. I have a severe case of SLS though, which seems impossible at first because, well Go Kyung-pyo, so I've been on denial. But this week I've accepted that it's real, and I have it bad because I'm rooting for Jin-gyu more than Kang-soo. I hope this doesn't reflect badly on my moral code though (I'm sorry!), because it could just be caused by the actor's performance. I love Kim Sun-ho's take on the character and I think he has delivered some interesting depth in his acting so far. It's always exciting when you discover new talent. Apparently he has some theater background so I'm not that surprised at his quick rise in dramaland, since he doesn't seem to be camera conscious like a complete newbie would be.

Not gonna lie, Kim Sun-ho is my new favorite thing. I LOVE HIM. You've been voicing all my feelings, both here and on the fanwall hahaha.

Although, I admit, something I like about this show is its handling of perspective. It doesn't seem one-note and makes me feel like all 4 leads have their own narrative arcs that will get equal attention. It makes for really entertaining and refreshing interactions between all the characters, and is helping to make this show pretty engaging. It also makes me not feel second lead syndrome in the typical sense because I'm too busy looking forward to seeing how all the relationships pan out between the characters.

I agree that KSH is doing wonderfully. He's the type of actor that gets you replaying his scenes just because of how he acts them, lol. And I'm so invested in his character's growth already that I actually paused and almost cried at the end of episode 4 when I realized he was going to disappoint me.

Casts are always the main reason that attracting me to watch a drama, but casts alone won't make me stay until the end. It's the drama itself which is more important. If the casts are not attracting me to watch, I won't watch regardless how good reactions of that particular drama. Some ppl might say I would miss a good drama, but how and what we decide to watch is based on ourselves anyway.

so because you in particular don't like the cast or aren't interest in the drama it deserves to flop? i have no interest in the drama either and most likely won't watch it but nothing DESERVES to flop, lmao. unless it's like over the top offensive maybe.

9

Wait. So you haven't even watched the drama and simply say it has to flop? Because you dislike female leads looks?

When a drama flops sometimes cast doesn't get paid, it gets cut and someone like you losts his chance to watch the whole story, whole responsibility lays on director and it often results with tragic endings for them. That's why we shouldn't say that some show deserves to be flop. No one deserves to be responsible for that.

2

When I said about "casts are not attracting to watch " - i meant how I'm viewing them as an actor/actress. Attractive appearance is a bonus part but it never be my reason to watch any drama. I'm watching a drama, not a fashion show.

2

well, i have missed ton of dramas regardless the actors. mostly i lost interest in the middle due to their characters. aside from the plot, characters and its development much more important to me when it comes to the drama coz you have given a lot of time to build it compare when you work within movie time frame. i normally resent drama where female leads are delivered as a weak, damsel in distress,or only as supporting role for male lead. i still can't understand how many people sticks with the show solely because their idol appears on that drama eventhough they would agree that the show is just that bad. like, how can you stand spend hours watching drama you don't like just to see "some face" ? there will no handsomeness in the world that could make me sit and suffer through 20 hours. it is just beyond my understanding.

Falsify (Mon/Tues), Man Who Dies to Live (Wed/Thurs), Woman of Dignity (Fri/Sat cable), Father Is Strange (weekends).
I guess the Korean viewers do appreciate good solid acting.

Beside "Age of Youth" I'm looking forward to "Argon." It has a pretty solid cast and it's good to see Lee Kyoung-young so soon after "Forest of Secrets."
I sure hope it's worth dropping "Falsify" for, in Chun Woo-hee's case. The writing team are unfamiliar. Crossing fingers that it would be good.

It's very unfair. People automatically have a bias against idol actors even if they actually are very good actors. All three 'idols' in Manhole have shown themselves to be decent actors in previous projects, and in The King Loves, Siwan and Jonghyun both have solid experience and talent as well. Yoona is probably a step down in terms of skills but even she isn't doing a bad job. It's not fair to judge them just because they also happen to be singers.

none of listed drama appeal to me since SDQ and FMY ended. right now i'm only follow BOTWG. is it consider good or bad for 3.5 rating ? the show has so many weaknesses e.g. mediocre acting, the slow plot (the show already at 12 episode but the plot and characters development feels like they still at 5 or 6, rolled eyes),not to mention not believable romance development between the leads (i don't say they have no chemistry, it is just felt they "fall in love" too soon without much of a reason). the only reason i watch this show is for Soo-ah character, representation of person who always been beaten all of her life, too tired too hope and just give up on happiness, and suddenly for the first time in her life found someone/something worthy enough to get hold on to only to find it is only temporary (man, i really do want to see this character get happy end). and not to mention the ost, whenever it is play you know the scene will be very heartbreaking for Soo-ah character. but overall, i won't say BOTWG is that appealing if 3.5 means a high rating.

I just started watching Live up to your Name and it's so good! It's my first time to watch Kim Nam-gil's acting and it surely didn't disappoint me. How can an ahjussi be so handsome and cute at the same time? I'm definitely smitten with him!

As for Kim Ah-joong, I've only seen her act in 200 pounds beauty. I found her voice unbearable to hear (maybe because it was a decade ago) it was all too cutesy as well as her act. But she has surely changed! I love her in this one.

I hope their ratings will improve in the following weeks! Even though I'm already juggling a lot of dramas, I'm making space to add this one up.

Woman of Dignity is one of those dramas people should check out later, since it seems so few are watching/enjoying this drama. you will be pleasantly surprised at the calibre of acting and how the zany makjang story is so effective and entertaining... can't wait for the last 2 eps, so unpredictable!

At the end of the day, people will watch what they like - whether it's bc of the cast/plot/genre. Although it seems unfair when a show you like is getting low ratings, that shouldn't detract from your enjoyment. Maybe the Korean viewers are busy and miss some episodes. There's probably less novelty for them in watching as many dramas as some of us do.

I hope Bride of the Water God's rating goes up this week. It may be a different version from the manga that most people love, but the story of the K-series has also a good story line.
