Bride of the Water God 2017: Episode 10

Ha-baek is beginning to realize that there’s more to his quest to the human world than just finding the divine stones. He’s here to learn a valuable lesson, but first he has to discover what exactly that lesson is. Meanwhile Hu-ye struggles with his darker nature, but you can hardly blame him when he’s being bombarded at every turn.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Ha-baek turns back to So-ah when she sobs that he makes her feel third-rate for crying. He kisses her, then he pulls back and tells her again, “I said I’m going to leave.” Then he kisses her again.

A phone rings and interrupts them — it’s Mura, calling to say that Joo-dong has recovered. So-ah and Ha-baek drive to Bi-ryum’s penthouse in silence, and when she drops Ha-baek off, So-ah says that she can see the end now. She asks him to show her when he gets the third divine stone, though she says to herself that it’s probably another thing that only gods can see.

Ha-baek watches her drive away, then a voice calls his name. He sees Joo-dong standing close by, holding out his arms for a hug. Ha-baek returns his hug enthusiastically.

Joo-dong tells the other gods that when he lost his memory, he woke up in a hospital with no clue who he was or what happened. The person who brought him to the hospital couldn’t be reached, so Joo-dong ended up wandering, homeless and working small jobs until he ended up at a temple.

Mura says that Hu-ye confessed that Joo-dong’s memory loss was his doing. Ha-baek asks about the third sacred stone, and Joo-dong holds out a hand. When he opens it, a bright light shines in his palm, which materializes into a stone marked with a glowing circle.

Ha-baek puts it with the two matching stones, and when the three stones are reunited, they shine brilliantly. Joo-dong looks for his tablet, and when Mura asks why he brought that to the human world, he says he was told to. Mura and Bi-ryum are confused, since it’s useless here anyway.

Driving Ha-baek to So-ah’s house later, Mura whines at him for going back there every night. Joo-dong jokes that Ha-baek’s place (the roof) has no walls, and that Mura and her “husband’s” homes make him feel claustrophobic.

Mura is so flustered at his calling Bi-ryum her husband that she pulls over to yell at Joo-dong. Joo-dong asks if he remembers wrong, since he clearly recalls Bi-ryum telling him that he and Mura were engaged. Well, that explains so much.

Joo-dong adds that Bi-ryum said they hadn’t spent a night together yet and that he couldn’t wait, and Mura lets out a bloodcurdling scream to shut him up.

Speaking of Bi-ryum, Mura tells the guys that he’s been acting strange lately, overly sensitive and hostile to Hu-ye. Joo-dong defends Hu-ye, saying that his using his powers and making Joo-dong lose his memory was unintentional, but Mura says that Bi-ryum thinks it was intentional. Namsuri wonders if Hu-ye is human or god, since if he’s human, they can’t harm him.

Joo-dong goes home with Ha-baek and Namsuri. Ha-baek hangs back to turn on So-ah’s porch light, but just as he’s about to knock on her door, the interior light goes out so he drops his hand. Inside, So-ah lies wide awake on the couch.

In Ha-baek’s rooftop room, Joo-dong notices Ha-baek staring at the door to So-ah’s house. Joo-dong brings up the gods’ servants, and how many gods were opposed when Bi-ryum talked the Queen Mother into creating them. He says that Mura was one of the ones who thought it was unfair to make humans take responsibility for what the gods did.

Joo-dong asks if Ha-baek is okay, since he knows Ha-baek tried to forget about it, and adds that he doesn’t know if it’s right for the high priest to keep playing along with Ha-baek’s pretending not to remember.

Ha-baek insists that he really has forgotten, and that it’s been twelve hundred years, and that after so long it’s natural that it wouldn’t bother him anymore.

Joo-dong asks why Ha-baek looks unhappy when he’s found the sacred stones, and why Mura is so anxious to send him back to the Realm of the Gods. Ha-baek doesn’t answer.

In the morning, he goes downstairs and approaches So-ah’s door again. This time, before he knocks, she opens the door. The air is awkward and uncomfortable between them, and So-ah leaves for work with hardly a word to Ha-baek.

Sang-yoo is startled to find So-ah at the office before him, and she tells him that they’re working extended hours from now on. He fusses over her and takes over the mopping, and So-ah remembers Yeom-mi saying how much Sang-yoo cares about her.

So-ah can hardly concentrate, replaying Ha-baek’s kiss and how he said he was leaving over and over in her mind. Hu-ye calls her and asks her to meet with him this afternoon.

At a coffee shop, Bi-ryum tells his silent minion Jin-geon that Hu-ye said they couldn’t do anything to him as gods of life.

Meanwhile, Jaya lurks around Hu-ye’s hotel with panda eyes, unable to stop fixating on his back-hug the day before. She decides to ask him about it, but every time she sees him, she hides. She follows him around all day, trying to work up the nerve to approach him.

So-ah arrives for her meeting with Hu-ye, where he tells her that the land sale contract was canceled, but that there’s a high cancellation fee. He offers to let her pay half of it by providing psychological services to his hotel employees, who often need to unburden the stresses of customer service.

As for the rest, Hu-ye splits the cost between her working on his farm (taking her up on her offer to help out) and in treatment sessions for his insomnia.

Eventually Jaya calls Secretary Min, who’s standing right in front of her, hee. He’s startled by how exhausted she looks, and when she asks if he went to church last week, he asks if he needs dating advice. Though she vehemently denies it, Jaya asks what it means when a guy suddenly back-hugs a woman.

HAHA, Secretary Min says that’s sexual harassment and that she should have punched the guy. Jaya admits that it was Hu-ye, but Secretary Min thinks she’s delusional and tells her to get some rest.

They spot Hu-ye and So-ah walking toward them, and Secretary Min tells Jaya that the Block World contract has been canceled. Apparently the entire project has been moved to a new location, and Jaya is indignant that Hu-ye would go to such lengths for So-ah. She reports back to her grandfather, who can’t understand why So-ah would turn down such a lucrative offer.

So-ah, meanwhile, tells herself that this is a good solution, because even though she lost the sale money, she’s gaining a lot of new clients. She gets back to her office to find Jaya waiting for her, and her old rival taunts So-ah for always acting so high and mighty even though she had nothing.

So-ah stays calm until Jaya insults Sang-yoo, then she advances on Jaya and scares her. Jaya blurts that she knows she’s not selling her land because of leopard poop, and she gets loud again until Yeom-mi arrives and asks why Jaya is here.

Suddenly Yeom-mi stares at Jaya in horror, and says there are ghosts all around her. Jaya leaves screaming, and Yeom-mi just smiles demurely.

The ladies go to So-ah’s office, where she wonders how Jaya knew about the land sale. She can’t understand why Jaya is so hostile toward her, and Yeom-mi says that it’s because Jaya is still living in their high school days. She says Jaya isn’t upset about something So-ah did, but about something she didn’t do.

Yeom-mi says she’s here because So-ah showed up in her dreams. She came to see if So-ah has good news, but she can see that something is wrong. So-ah says she’s trying to solve a difficult math problem whose answer she already knows, but the solving process and the answer don’t match. As she walks home that night, So-ah decides to just just blame the math and find a creative solution.

She pauses before rounding her corner again, bracing herself in anticipation of seeing the streetlight empty. But tonight Ha-baek is there waiting for her, so she approaches him and asks why, when he said he was giving up on trying to regain his powers (his usual excuse for being there). He says her name, but she interrupts to tell him that she’s been solving a math problem all day.

She says that she thought of a solution, which is to stop things now rather than starting something new. She says that she wants to end on a beautiful note, and she asks for Ha-baek’s help.

Ha-baek asks what she wants him to do, so So-ah tells him to treat her as he did before yesterday (and their kiss). He doesn’t look happy, but he walks her home without argument.

In the morning, Ha-baek does his best to respect So-ah’s wishes. When she tells him vaguely that she’s changed her office hours in order to sort out someone’s mess, he admits that he wants to challenge her about it. But he promises to behave as long as he’s here, and asks what So-ah needs from him.

She says money (in that drawn-out way that’s become their private joke), and Ha-baek blinks and twitches then tells her to forget what he just said, ha. Chuckling, So-ah says he should throw a farewell party before he goes, but he says he has no money. So-ah tells him to go and earn some, then.

Joo-dong watches them from the roof, then revives a dying plant with a wave of his hand. When Ha-baek comes back upstairs, Joo-dong asks if it’s because of So-ah that Ha-baek looks unhappy and Mura is anxious. He says he understands Mura, because when Ha-baek was going through “that time,” he was as sad then as he is now.

Joo-dong says he’s always been on Ha-baek’s side, and that Ha-baek always makes the right decisions even if they end in tragedy. He says that humans live short lives compared to the gods and can avoid harsh criticism when they break the rules, especially when it’s done out of love.

The earth god explains how their mortality causes humans to do things despite knowing better, like holding onto hot stones, though he concedes that So-ah is different. He asks Ha-baek if it’s pity toward humans he’s feeling or love, and when Ha-baek hesitates, Joo-dong says that Ha-baek didn’t know back then, either. Ha-baek says softly that it ended in disgrace, and Joo-dong repeats that he supports him anyway.

Bi-ryum takes out his frustrations on a punching bag, while at the same time, Hu-ye walks through an empty parking garage. The lights go out one by one, then something slams into Hu-ye’s knee and knocks him to the floor. Bi-ryum lands a hard punch to the bag, and Hu-ye is struck by something that sends him spinning through the air.

Hu-ye is pummeled by an invisible force until he’s battered and bloody, while elsewhere, Bi-ryum pounds the punching bag in a simultaneous rhythm. Hu-ye is helpless to fight back, because there’s nothing to fight back against.

Then we see that it’s not Bi-ryum doing this, but a pair of minor gods who were at the gathering. Still, the way they talk makes it sound like Bi-ryum put them up to this. They collapse in cowardly fear when Hu-ye gets up, covered in blood, and locks his gaze on them.

The two minor gods clutch each other, confused because they thought Hu-ye was human, but terrified because he’s still able to walk. Black smoke begins to emanate from Hu-ye’s body as he advances on the minor gods, and he raises a smoldering arm to strike them.

Someone grabs Hu-ye at the last second and throws him to the ground. He nearly unleashes his attack before he realizes it’s Geol-rin, and the minor gods wisely make their escape. Still shaking with anger, Hu-ye asks why they did this to him, as his injuries disappear like they never existed.

He gets his answer when Bi-ryum calls to say that he sent the minor gods to prove that even the least of the gods is stronger than Hu-ye. He says he’ll consider this revenge for what Hu-ye did to “my friend.”

Jin-geon stares at Bi-ryum, who tells him that just because Jin-geon doesn’t want to get his own revenge, that doesn’t mean Bi-ryum has to forgive Hu-ye. Jin-geon leaves when Mura arrives, and we find out that she’s the reason he doesn’t talk — she froze his tongue and smashed it. Mura wonders why Jin-geon’s twin Mo-myung didn’t come to the human realm with him. Interestingly, Bi-ryum looks uncomfortable and changes the subject.

The four gods meet for lunch, and Joo-dong asks Ha-baek what it’s like to feel hunger. Mura says that’s why Ha-baek needs to go back to the Realm of the Gods, but Bi-ryum notes that Ha-baek doesn’t seem to want to go back.

Mura leaves the table to take a call, and Bi-ryum says that he heard Hu-ye angered his board members by returning So-ah’s land. Ha-baek asks darkly how Bi-ryum always knows everything, and Bi-ryum smirks that he has nothing else to do.

He wonders what So-ah had to do to get the land back, offering to harm Hu-ye on Ha-baek’s behalf if he wishes. Joo-dong asks when Bi-ryum got so crooked, and Mura returns, saying that he was always like this.

She asks Ha-baek when he’s going back, making Bi-ryum complain that she sounds like a broken record. He says that Ha-baek will go back when he’s ready, because he knows what will happen if he doesn’t. Ha-baek stands to leave, telling Joo-dong that he’ll see him when Joo-dong returns in a few days from an errand.

Once they’re alone, Mura blows up at Bi-ryum for the way he’s behaving toward Ha-baek. She accuses him of being rude, irresponsible, and stubborn, and says that Ha-baek only lets it slide because it’s between him and Bi-ryum. He asks if she’s angry because he provoked Ha-baek, or because Ha-baek might use Bi-ryum’s words as an excuse to stay in the human realm as long as possible.

He lashes out, telling her to admit that she’s insecure because of So-ah. He yells that he knows Mura doesn’t want to lose Ha-baek again, and he tells her to just ask him for help like she’s always done.

Mura says Bi-ryum is crazy, but he pins her against the wall and says that he’s fond of So-ah too, but that he’ll always choose Mura over her. Mura looks worried and says that he’s never been this unstable, asking if he’s changed because of Hu-ye. She asks what Hu-ye did to provoke Bi-ryum, but Bi-ryum just walks out.

As Ha-baek walks home, he passes an elderly man pulling a cart full of cardboard. He tries to ignore the man’s struggles, then he decides to try out his powers on the cart. Nothing works, so he just pushes the cart manually, cracking a smile when the man thanks him.

Soon he’s pulling the cart all by himself as the man loads it up with more cardboard. Ha-baek even rolls up his sleeves and helps load cardboard, then he pulls the heavy cart back to the recycling area.

The old man surprises Ha-baek by paying him for his help, and he can tell this is the first time Ha-baek has ever worked. He tells Ha-baek that it’s traditional to buy red long johns for your parents with your first paycheck, and advises him that if he does well, he’ll gain good fortune.

Ha-baek stops at a street vendor when a pair of matching coffee mugs catches his eye, and he remembers that one of So-ah’s mugs is chipped. He doesn’t have enough money to buy the mugs, so he offers to model the vendor’s wares in exchange. He sure knows how to play to his strengths.

He spends the afternoon modeling with trinkets while the vendor takes photos. He walks away with his coffee mugs, looking pretty damn pleased with himself, and rightfully so.

So-ah’s clinic is doing well due to Hu-ye sending all of his friends to her. Hu-ye calls So-ah to ask her to meet him, and she smiles when she arrives at the coffee shop and sees him curiously observing all the people.

She goes inside and orders their drinks, as Ha-baek watches her intently. He denies having been curious when So-ah buys him one of the drinks he was eyeing, though he complains that she got him a black drink when there are so many other interesting colors of drinks, ha.

So-ah accurately nails his chattering about drinks as nerves because he has something to say to her. He presents her with the coffee mugs, looking so adorably proud of himself, then pretends disinterest in her response.

He tells So-ah that he only got them to remind her of her place, which confuses her, so he explains the cartoon figures on the mugs. He says the cute pink dragon on one mug is her, wagging her tail happily to see her owner, the handsome man on the other mug that looks like Ha-baek. He’s even named the dragon Yong-yong, and says that it will remind her she’s a servant whenever she uses it.

So-ah laughs and shows Ha-baek the other sides of the mugs. On the back of the “owner” mug is an adorable blue dragon, wagging his tail to see the girl on the “servant” mug. So-ah asks if this means Ha-baek will be her servant, and he petulantly tries to take his gift back, ha.

They walk together later, and Ha-baek proudly tells So-ah that he worked two jobs to buy the mugs, showing her pictures of himself carrying cardboard boxes as proof. He even has some of the vendor’s extra photos, and he gets adorably offended when she points out that the stuffed animal he’s holding in one shot is the same blue dragon from the mug.

Hu-ye is So-ah’s last patient of the day, and she grows worried when he doesn’t show or answer her calls. He’s at a bar trying to drink away Bi-ryum’s threats and hateful words, and by the time he answers his phone, he’s good and drunk. He apologizes and says he’s on his way.

Ha-baek is also worried, so he calls So-ah. She says her last client is late, and that’s when Hu-ye crashes through the door. She ends the call with Ha-baek, but not before he hears her say Hu-ye’s name.

He’s barely conscious, so So-ah leads him to a chair and checks his temperature. She’s afraid to give him medicine because he’s had so much alcohol, so she takes off his jacket and bathes his face and arms with cool water.

Hu-ye dreams about his confrontation with Ha-baek, when he’d ripped Hu-ye’s shirt open to find the earth god’s mark on his chest. So-ah decides to loosen Hu-ye’s collar, and Hu-ye wakes, imagining her to be Ha-baek. He lunges at her, imagining that he sees Ha-baek’s face, and he spins her into the chair where he was just sitting as black smoke rises from his hands.

He suddenly snaps out of it, and when he realizes that it’s So-ah, Hu-ye looks instantly alarmed at what he’s done. He gasps an apology, and So-ah watches as a cut on his arm heals in seconds.

Hu-ye is still looming over So-ah when Ha-baek bursts into her office. They all freeze, and as Ha-baek and Hu-ye lock gazes, their expressions grow hard.

COMMENTS

I really like where this conflict is going between Hu-ye and the gods. Watching Hu-ye struggle with the darker side of his nature, knowing that his clashes with Ha-baek and Bi-ryum are only making it worse, has me on the edge of my seat. Yet even so, it saddens me that things could be so different if not for the prejudice the gods hold for half-gods — they could be helping him learn to control his powers and be a good person, instead of making his fight to tamp down his dark half that much harder.

The tension between Bi-ryum and Mura makes so much sense now that we know they used to be engaged! No wonder Bi-ryum trails after Mura like a lost little boy, and why just a word from her can make him look so miserable. It’s been obvious that he has feelings for her, but their broken engagement was a surprise, and I’ll bet they broke up after that fight at the divine gate the night they lost Mura’s stone.

It also explains at least some of Bi-ryum’s hostility toward Hu-ye. No doubt he’s prejudiced toward him simply because of what he is, but when the high priest first told the gods of half-gods, Bi-ryum seemed more amused and interested than disgusted. Obviously, they’ve alluded to something happening between the two, and I wonder what could be so bad that Bi-ryum refuses to even talk about it. And I’m betting that a lot of his animosity is pure jealousy because Mura continuously defends Hu-ye. You can see Bi-ryum’s pain every time Mura gets angry with him, but he can’t go against his own nature. I feel for Bi-ryum even as I hate the way he’s behaving, because I don’t think that Bi-ryum is a bad guy, he’s just letting his emotions get the best of him. Whatever happened with Hu-ye to make Bi-ryum so angry, he’s going to make the situation a thousand times worse if he doesn’t calm down.

I just feel so bad for Hu-ye. I used to mistrust him, and I still think he’s teetering on a high wire and could easily tip over to the dark side. But you can also feel his struggle to be good, especially in the way he treats people, and I feel confident that if the gods would just leave him alone he’d be happy to live a quiet, peaceful life not bothering anyone and keeping his powers suppressed. It’s Bi-ryum’s constant pressure that’s pushing Hu-ye to lash out, and I’m afraid that if Bi-ryum doesn’t stop, whatever destruction happens as a result of Hu-ye’s fury will be Bi-ryum’s fault.

I really like that about these characters, that nobody is purely good or purely bad. Bi-ryum and Hu-ye are the most obvious examples, as Hu-ye has the capacity for devastating death and destruction but tries to be a good person anyway, and Bi-ryum is mostly just mischievous, but he lets his emotions get the better of him and often goes too far. Ha-baek is so good that he tips right over into arrogance and pompousness, so assured in his goodness and truthfulness that he forgets to be a decent person to others. So-ah is so damaged by her past and her capacity for empathy that she tries to shut that part of herself off entirely, so she often comes across as selfish and uncaring. And Mura is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters, because she’s always honest about herself, and even though she has a lot of faults, she owns them like a goddess and doesn’t try to convince anyone otherwise.

This seems to be the year of the sympathetic villain in dramaland, but I love this show in particular for giving us a full complement of flawed, and ironically human, characters. It’s so much more interesting to watch a story populated with characters that aren’t perfect or one-note, because it makes their character progression (to the good or the bad) that much more interesting. Ha-baek’s growth is still interesting me the most, because he’s really taking an interest in humans now instead of ignoring them because they’re beneath his notice. He’s really changing a lot, in really beautiful ways, and it will only serve to make him a much better king once he goes back home to claim his throne.

My heart really aches for Hu-ye! He's basically getting bullied by Bi-ryum and at the same time he's really trying hard to control his power, to be good, to stay good. I usually try to give the benefit of doubt to a character, especially one with a history that is basically still a mystery to us. But when it comes to Bi-ryum, I really cannot stand him anymore. I tried to think from his perspective but he's just like a loose cannon now and everything he's doing to Hu-ye is just not acceptable...no matter what his history is with him. I think this is why I really want Hu-ye to fight back (heck, to turn evil in fact, if it means Bi-ryum stops taunting him). But then, Hu-ye doesn't even want to be evil! He's come a long way from the young cave boy, abandoned by his father and all he wants is to live a peaceful life...by being a good person. Can't this guy even have that? Also, can I just mention that Im Joo Hwan is killing it in this role? He's 'supposed' to be the bad guy here (according to the gods anyway) and every time he does feel inclined to hurt someone, he controls himself…and I go from being creeped out to feeling pity in an instance. His emotions are so raw and intense and my heart just breaks every time he’s told that everything he touches dies anyway…so why bother trying to be good?

In my perspective Bi-ryum is the true evil and Habaek is his acomplice because he shuts his eyes and tolerates his actions...I actualy really wanted Hu Ye to snap at Bi-ryum just once and make him tremble in fear so much he would never think of coming close to him,i see the only way to deal with the likes of him is like that

Same! I really want Hu-ye to get back at Bi-ryum! It's not fair that he has to go through this. And it's not just taunting Hu-ye anymore! Bi-ryum is now physically attacking him...hurting him! That scene where Hu-ye was attacked by the minor gods was just heartbreaking. He does not deserve that!

I kept thinking that, under whatever laws of the gods, shouldn't Bi-ryum still be liable for inflicting harm, given that he was the mastermind of the violence?! Argh. Bi-ryum was detestable in this episode.

Bi Ryum is acting like that because Hu Ye is his father's child. Remember a few episodes back, Habaek mentioned BiRyum's father's mistake. His behavior makes sense. @lollypip, it's more than just jealousy over Mu Ra.

0

@bluedoe, don't get me wrong! I didn't mean to imply that jealousy is Bi-ryum's main reason for mistreating Hu-ye, but I do think jealousy is a big contributor to the intensity of his hate.

1

@lollypip sorry I missed your point. Thanks for the recap <3

Nah, I was very tired when I wrote that bit so it's not as clear as I'd like.

Of course I could say that about probably half of my recaps... lol

4

I agree! I couldn't really enjoy the rest of the episode because all I felt was anger on behalf of Hu-ye. Also angry on behalf of So-Ah too.
These useless gods should just go back to where they came from.

I just keep thinking there's something that must have made BR dislike HY so much... And obviously it doesn't justify how mean he's being (you don't give tit for tat, just to get revenge) but I almost feel bad for BR too. He's very bitter over how the girl he likes is hung up over another man, and now he's hellbent on making HY's life a mess. It's like I can see some flashes of hurt on his face but the show's not telling me why!

And yes, at the same time, watching HY get bashed around made me cringe so bad, because I think he really wants to be a good human. But the gods aren't letting him. Why! *cries* I'm glad that JGL is on his side at least, because SOMEONE has to be on his side.

It makes sense for Bi-ryum to dislike Hu-ye, especially if there is a past between them where one of them did something to the other. However, I don't think it's fair to express that hostility toward Hu-ye who doesn't even remember anything. Hu-ye basically begs Bu-ryum to tell him why he's doing this to him. He makes it pretty obvious that he just wants to be left alone.

It's true that Bi-ryum has hurt feelings and he's probably thinking that blaming Hu-ye is the only choice he has because Hu-ye did whatever he did in the past (that we're still unaware of) and is now oblivious to the pain he had caused.

I really want to know what happened between the two. And you're right, Hu-ye is so alone that I'm glad he has atleast one person by his side. He needs all the people he can get to show him that he really is a good guy!

My new theory: we learn this episode that tongueless Jin-geon's twin, Mo-myung, hasn't been seen by Mura for hundreds of years. So we will say that he's "missing." I'm thinking Bi-ryum and the twins found the cave where Hu-ye was being kept, decided to investigate but something went wrong and they ran but Mo-myung never made it out of the cave. This would explain why Bi-Ryun keeps telling Hu-ye he's heard that he kills gods ( he assumes he Hu-ye killed Mo-myung) and also explains why he thinks Jin-geon should want revenge on Hu-ye.

There's definitely something to that twin thing. But i think it's just his frustration because of his father's mistake. Hu Ye must be that mistake.

True. This drama gives me massive SLS. I wish Korean dramas did not come with strict "who gets the girl" rules. I'm only watching this drama for Im Joo Hwan now. If only this drama was about a supposedly evil demi-god who tries to live a good life, gets the girl and crushes the powers of the arrogant, better-than-all god jerks...it'd be perfect!

I think Hu-ye and So-ah both exemplify the human struggle to be good against the baser emotions of selfishness and anger. They both are angry at their fathers for abandonment and despite not wanting the pain and resentment from it to continue to affect them, it does. So-ah's friend wondered why So-ah became a psychiatrist when it was obvious she was not suited. I think it was because she struggles so much to understand herself as she dislikes that she is still so hurt and affected by her father's lack of love for her. Even as an adult, she acts out in petty anger because of resentment.
The gods on the other hand aren't accustomed to self reflection or acknowledge any need to try to become better persons. Just as they were not born, but came into existence, they don't see themselves as beings with a finite arc of development.
Ha-beck has chosen to "forget" what happened before rather than allow it to affect and change him. Unacknowledged mistakes are bound to be repeated.

I really wish for Hu-ye to overcome this prediction of him turning evil. It would be to tragic, just because he has been trying so hard to be good and helpful.

Never realized my favorite characters would be the minor ones aka Jo Dong and Jo Geol-rin...Curious as well about that man Habeak helped as he for sure was not ordinary, curious if it was a special human with foresight or a god undercover...Habaek curiousity and his interst in the human matters it's trully a delight...I'm curious more and more about what happned back then with that tabboo incident..We're also hinted that HuYe might have killed a God in their realm but i wonder how much it was self protection and how much evil intent(the enjoyment of killing without any reason) seeing Gods like Bi-ryum who is down right a bully...Also about this,i really don't like this part of Habaek, this bystander nature, letting him do all this stuff and knowing it yet choosing to close his eyes because it's too much trouble,he becomes a accomplice in the long run and as a King for sure is not wise...

It is nice to see Habeak be a bit more proactive. Most of the time he is so passive and only reacts to everything, which makes it hard for me to enjoy his character and root for him. But in this episode he actually worked, which was great to watch.
I know of course why he needs to be that way. He has to calculate everything very carefully, as he is going to be king one day. That is why it was so fascinating to see him initiating the kiss and work for a change, but he still has a long way to go, seeing as he doesn't say anything as Soah makes the decision about how to deal with their feelings. We don't hear his thoughts and therefore I have a harder time understanding him and rooting for him. He doesn't say out loud what he really wants and hides his emotions from everyone around him, even his curiosity about the iced drinks he tries to hide. It is a bit frustrating for me to watch characters like that.

Things I love in this ep:
1. Our Lord Habaek really has a thing for “only see what he wants to see”, right? =)) The lovely 2-mug scene reminds me of his delusion back in ep 2, where he really believed that So-ah had been “awaken”, and she was going out searching for “her Lord”, so he ran after her in the park =)))) Oh boy, you’re still the Habaek that we know. I laugh so hard at this scene =)))
2. Habaek earns his very first pay by being model (and collecting waste paper). His God-looking really pays off =))
3. I’m pretty sure that the diamond ring which the old man doing scrap metal collecting picked up and gave to the police is So-ah’s. The pink coat of hers must have been left in some trash can by Nam Sori when he went to change clothes in ep 1.
Things borther me:
Bi-ryeom, hah, Bi-ryeom. What a real headache. The stories we’ve got up till now lack substance to justify his behavior. Why does he have to be such an extreme like that towards Hu-ye? This must have been linked to the story happening 1,200 years ago. Even the minor god said Hu-ye had done something back then. Hope there’s an adequate reason for Bi-ryeom’s behavior, or I’m gonna really dislike him completely.

The conflict between the Gods and Hu-Ye is heating up and I like it. I'm still not sold on the Habaek-Soah romance though I already tried to give it a chance. I'm more invested the friendships between the Gods and the Minor Gods too.

Nonetheless, Huye is winning my sympathy vote and I'm rooting so hard for him. He's like the Hades of them all, associated with Hell made people feared him but Hades is miles ahead of Poseidon, Zeus and their cheating asses. I loved Hades and still haven't forgive Disney for butchering Hades in the 1997's Hercules.

As for Soah, maybe it's because she's played by Shin Sekyung and I have seen enough of her production, namely Six Flying Dragons, Fashion King, and Tree With Deep Roots, I just want her to stay the hell away from men and choose herself. We all know, it isn't happening in this considering she's THE bride and I still have no idea what's the bride's role in here.

LOL at myself for being fooled by the pretty and the handsome in this show and setting myself up for tragedies I foresee in my future.

I feel like LollyPip is making excuses for Bi Ryeom, let's face it he is a bully. He has intimidated humans before and right now he is harassing Hu Ye with no good explanation just using hearsay to justify his actions when it is obvious Hu Ye has no idea what the aggression is all about. Bi Ryeom is a hoodlum and the sooner he gets his comeuppance the happier I will be as a viewer

He definitely is a bully and I also hope his comeuppance, but he also at times seems like a confused and arrogant kid. I'm holding out on labeling him a bully because the show has hinted on something really bad that Huye may have done, and I'm saying it better be that bad enough to warrant the constant harassment. I get really nervous everytime Bi-ryeom attacks Huye, verbally or otherwise, I feel like he would snap at that very moment, watching him hold back is painful. And now I realize that I'm holding off on labeling Bi-ryeom a 'bad' god, because deep down, he isn't, he's behaving like a wounded animal lashing out on his target.

I also don't think that Hu-ye is really trying to fight an "evil side" per se, more that he is unsocialised (because of his father's abuse) and doesn't know how to control his powers. Hu-ye would make a really great lead hero in his own show!

As usual, this episode presents me with more questions than answers. Argh! I want some answers! I like Joodong; I feel like he's the most rational of all the gods AND he's on Habaek's side.

On Habaek aka Yongyong: Omo, how hilarious is it that he offered his handsome face to earn some money? It's so ridiculously arrogant yet hilarious. Very in-character for Habaek. ? I think it's very sweet that he listens to what SA has to say, and actually tries to do it. (Even though he helped the old man purely out of goodwill, which awww made me like him more.) And those cups are adorable! Tbh I wasn't sold on the SSK and NJH pairing but I'll say that I do think they're very cute together.

On Biryum: I assume when he said he wanted revenge for what HY did to his "friend", he didn't mean JD? He meant the twin brother, Moomyung? When MR mentioned him, BR looked almost regretful. If HY did something to his friend then that would explain his irrational hatred. Side note though: I really like the editing of the punching scenes, it felt like BR was the one doing the punching.

On Hoo Ye: Given how "confused" he is whenever BR hates on him, I'd say that he may have hurt people unknowingly in the past. Even JD said so. But he did tell joogeolin that he didn't want to become a dark being, so there's some redemption there at least?

4

Required fields are marked *

I also thought it was for JD since HY admitted he erased his memories. But now looking back I'm not so sure. ? Regarding HY hurting ppl unknowingly, when he goes this eternal cycle of living-dying for 3000 yrs - maybe he doesn't remember gis full lives? Even HB mentioned that after 1200 years, everything should equate to nothing (about that story with the Shim woman). Sidenote, he said 1200 moon cycles - isn't that 1200 months then? Not 1200 years? Or does it mean something in Korean? Hmm~

2

Required fields are marked *

Oh yea I was a bit confused about this whole living-dying thing... so he literally lives... and dies... and is reborn again..? I wonder how that works. So if he "needs" a god's servant like JGL said, how will the servant deal with it? Search for his reborn character every time?

I think what HB meant by that, was that after 1200 years, the painful memories should have gone back to "nothing" (time heals all wounds?) because it's been so long. But I did notice the moon cycles thing as well! I also thought it was strange because to me, that's 1200 months LOL.

I still wished they would explain what happened 1200 years ago when the god's servants were created, why Bi Ryeom asked the Queen Mother to create them and what Ha Baek had to do with it. Also what Hu Ye did to the gods before as Geol Rin was about to expose. I just feel like the story would make more sense if they were to just explain it properly. Either that or I'm just blur for not getting it if they've explained it. There's no point creating suspense so that when they do tell the story, it'll have more impact cuz right now, its just frustrating.

Also, is it just me or did anyone else find that scene where the 4 gods were eating and the camera just spinning around made me really dizzy?

Other than that, this drama has become the one I look forward to the most every week.

The major flaw in this drama is the over-alluding to past incidents in the realm of the gods, without giving any proper explanation, apparently, this in incidents played an important role in making our characters who they are today, or act they way the act today ( Bi-ryeom's constant harassment of Huye, Mura's desperation to make Habaek return home, Soah's position as the gods' servant), and yet we aren't giving any explanations, just references to them.

I'm having SLS hard right now. Not in the sense that I want him to end up with the girl but just being more interested and fascinated by Hu-ye. I like that his main conflict is about his humanity and not the lead girl. Yes he wants to have her. But it's not out of pure love rather than her representing a peaceful and more comforting life in his mind if he could be with her. She's an anchor in the storm he's facing right now with Bi-ryum's bullying.
Hae-baek's development about his love life and new found respect for humans is just so vanilla and bland. Plus the fact that he's aware of Bi-ryum's doings and still lets it slide is a big no no. Either he secretly agrees with the treatment or just not bothering with it because he's 'occupied' with his romance. It doesn't make him look good.

8

Required fields are marked *

So. Much. This!!!!! I agree with all your points!

And in this vein, I hope the show shows that the root of Habaek's conflicts is deeper and more complex than whether he gets to stay with the girl.

How much does he love his home, his kingdom, constituents? What is the extent of his powers and how much will his reign affect the realms of both gods and human? How will all this be affected if he chooses to love (and stay with) a human?

So far, this hasn't been fully illustrated, so all we get is romantic conflict, which I also find vanilla and bland. Especially compared to Huye's internal demons, which Huye tries so hard to fight.

Also, I just realized Bi Ryeom's spiel to Mura about her not wanting to lose Habaek again pretty much sums up a lot of his own motivations, with her as the one he doesn't want to lose.

Perhaps Ha-baek saved the drowning sacrificial woman and Mura asked Bi Ryeom to invervene when Ha-baek got in trouble for bringing the human to the god's world. Bi Ryeom's intervention caused the God's servant judgement. The Sky King impregnanted the human and hid the child/ evidence of his deed away.
Didn't Bi Ryeom say Mura searched the heavens for the alleged halfling child, a byproduct of the incident they were all involved in? Perhaps rumors got around and that's why Hu-ye was cast out. Is he simply jealous that the halfling has turned out to be someone Mura has a relationship with and respect for?

"I feel for Bi-ryum even as I hate the way he’s behaving, because I don’t think that Bi-ryum is a bad guy, he’s just letting his emotions get the best of him."

I dunno, Lillypip: doesn't that pretty much excuse any kind of behavior, then? And his behavior is extreme and bullying.

At this point, Bi Ryeom has lost my sympathy. As a god, he is supposed to harm no humans. He is hedging his bets about Hu Ye being half human by putting up minor god thugs to beat Hu Ye mercilessly--a pretty dastardly loophole.

From what we've seen, Bi Ryeom has always been jealous of Ha Baek, for being destined to be king of the gods with no effort (in Bi Ryeom's eyes), and for being the one Mu Ra crushes on. That wasn't a good excuse to terrorize So Ah earlier.

He may have a hidden reason for hating Hu Ye, such as the hints we've been given about Hu Ye having harmed a friend of his in the past. If so, he should be open about it instead of tormenting Hu Ye secretly, because Hu Ye clearly doesn't know what the reason is. The other gods don't fully know how awful Bi Ryeom's being, either. If he wants to harm Hu Ye, then he should fight him, rather than hiding behind loopholes while actively trying to harm him.

I think later, we'll be shown reasons for Bi Ryeom's hate, and we'll be expected to feel sympathetic toward him, but right now...I just can't.

Re: Bi Ryeom
My sentiment exactly. But when after watching this episode, I was thinking, what if BR and MR characters played by other actors? Some young actors who owes more charisma, not look childish and hot headed vengeful? God with crazy antics like Great Jade Emperor or whiny and hot headed Underworld King in AATM is ok. But these 2 Gods, I had hard time whenever they appeared in my screen. --- FF button to the rescue... ^^

Additional thought: When Lollypip says Bi Ryeom lets his feelings get the better of him, that's basically saying what he does to Hu Ye is a crime of passion: unpremeditated and in the heat of the moment.

But when Bu Ryeom covers up his crime by having those two minor gods beat up Hu Ye, that is definitely premeditated, which is a whole 'nother level of wrong.

Sorry for spelling your name wrong earlier, Lollypip! I should type more carefully. And thank you for the recap.

Not only that he was bullying Hu-Ye, Bi Ryeom bullying So-Ah on the bridge is still fresh on my mind. I don't think that's forgivable ever, and yet it's glossed over like a non-event coz what's the big deal right, he was a god playing with a servant of a god and it's allowed.

I hope BR becomes the bad guy, so I can start having reasons to hate him. And yet I think Hu-Ye is the main villain? (sorry I don't read the novel).

IJH made HY character so mysteriously lovable. I can feel HY struggle to hold back his darkness, and try to be a good man. To be one of few good man. His loneliness and pensive sadness is wrenching my heart. He lives and survives the world alone, and only have GR on his side. To support him and remind him while he fights his own demon. He wants to live as normal as possible in human world. He doesn't want to go back to live pitiful isolated life in that doom cave. And IJH, he makes me cheer and sympathize to this lone desolate character. He makes me want to see HY has his own happy ending. And reach his dream.

Speaking of giddy, that scene with Ja-ya and Secretary Min was sooooo cute! They actually look good together!

Hmm... I think Bi-ryum is getting to me because I'm now thinking that Hu-ye must have really done something. It would make sense for Bi-ryum's rage if Hu-ye killed Jin-geon's twin (who's also possibly a friend to Bi-ryum). Still, like you said, Bi-ryum's making this so much worse than it really is and in that note, I do feel bad for Hu-ye. "So-ah’s clinic is doing well due to Hu-ye sending all of his friends to her. Hu-ye calls So-ah to ask her to meet him, and she smiles when she arrives at the coffee shop and sees him curiously observing all the people."

The subs of the episode I watched said that the new clients were friends of their old client Ma Bo Ryeom (not sure if I got the spelling correctly) and it was Ha Baek who called So Ah to meet him at the coffee shop. It's ok @lollypip, I am also seriously loving Hu Ye more and more ?

A lot of people seem to be mad at Bi Ryeom, and I could be wrong, but wasn't it alluded to by BR that Hu Ye was responsible for causing harm to someone? He could possibly be responsible for the death of the twin of the dumb lesser god, who almost seems like BR's friend. I don't think BR's prejudice against Hu Ye has anything to do with Moo Ra's defense of him.

And I don't think MooRa broke his tongue. I'd assumed BR keeps repeating this just because it isn't true, making a mockery of the rumour. The reason he doesn't speak could also be related to Hu Ye. Though it's more likely that Hu Ye could have performed these misdeeds unintentionally.

What does it mean to lose your memory? Are you automatically absolved of all your previous sins? Yes, it doesn't seem to be fair to punish someone for something they do not remember. But what if they had committed a grave sin? Where is the justice for the victim?

I think Hu-ye did do something unintentionally to harm one of Bi-ryum' friend. I also get the feeling though that it might be a poke a sleeping bear and then get mad when the bears eat you kind of situation. I think whatever happened Bi-ryum and his friends definitely escalated the situation and he feels guilty that his friend is dead but instead of taking responsibility for his part in the situation he would rather believe Hu-ye is a monster.

Who is that guy with BiRyum and what is his story? Did HuYe hurt him and his twin?

That look HuYe gave Habaek in the end will not endear him to the future King. I sure want Habaek to also see HuYe's good qualities but he is not making it easy for him. His desire for SoAh I understand. But his taunts to Habaek makes me question his endgame.

So-ah + Hu-ye since everybody is shipping them and he deserves a good break

Mu-ra + Bi-ryum to get him to calm down a bit

Yeon-mi + Namsori she has already staked her claim

Ha-baek + Ja-ya the leftovers settle for each other. And once he gets his powers back, he can use them to help her career

With my minor tweaks based on personal preference:

Habaek + So Ah -- I have no invested feelings in our OTP that I'm not really affected how it goes either way. I just think, "Fine. If you like each other so much, I suppose you are destined to be together and deserve each other."

Huye and ???? -- Meanwhile, with Huye, I feel that I will be more discerning and concerned as to who will be good enough to keep his heart. (Honestly, I don't think the show can fit in another romantic angle in addition to the maaaannnny loose ends we already have. But in my fantasy, there is room. ?)

Id have paired him with Jaya only because I thought Jaya was naively endearing in this episode, and Huye could sure use some lightness and innocence in his sad dark life. But there's Secretary Min, and with all his banters and interactions with Jaya, I feel he is better matched for her, story-arc wise.

Secretary Min + Jaya -- for reasons above.

In any case, like many other beanies, I am hoping for a happy ending for Huye. Preferably one that also involves love and a happily ever after, pretty please, Show?? ?

So-Ah + the money she can get if she sells her land to Hu Ye. So-Ah deserves that money.

Unpopular but I like BR...he's lashing without a care in the world but he's a god? whimsical, doing whatever his 'air' job is and hurting all the while-at this point i appreciate him being so 'entitled' 'cause I wouldn't have a clue he's not a God otherwise ..
My 2 cents: the mythology in this drama is very poor..esp HB? he's meant to be king but well there's meant to be a correlation to earth/humans..I don't have that impression so far..he does not exude God vibes (character wise-be it physically or through actions)..also,how do Gods love in their realm?..i thought if those things were better done/clearer, that would make his love with SA more powerful..and I hate that SA is such a bad professional!

Things are getting complicated and I anticipate a lot of heartache next week. In the end I guess our couple will have to make the sacrifice to part ways, and we will be left only with the hope that they can be reunited later. Awww, can So Ah go to the Water Country? I also wonder if there is a way to turn her into a goddess so they can live together forever. ?
Hu Ye's arc is also very sad, and I hope he does not turn evil but overcomes the pain and becomes wiser. I'm also curious to see how Mura and Bi-ryeom relationship will evolve: will they go back together at some point??
Btw, I'm loving the cinematography and the music, all the songs are wonderful and well chosen for the mood of the moment. And regarding small details, it's interesting how Bi-Ryeom's hair changes color every time he appears, I wish they would have given this type of traits to all the gods, to make them look a bit less human...

i hated that scene where the minor gods were hurting hu ye on bi ryum's orders and i wouldn't have really minded if he went dark once and hurt them back. but then, it would have been really difficult for him to go back to the good side as he's now, so i think it's a good thing anyways. surprisingly, my fav character of this episode was ja ya. i really wanted to see more of her with hu ye, but even her little part was so funny. i totally cracked up at the fake ghosts scene and then when she actually believed it all and whined to her grandpa about the whole building being haunted :D her naivete, petty jealousy and absolutely one track mind contrast so well hu ye's shades and strong desire to live as a good person and they make such a good pair. i ship them so hard! but i know it's not gonna end good for them, yet i can't stop wanting some happiness on their side. :|
about so ah and ha baek, i am just happy with the way this is progressing.

Both Hu-Ye (the abused & abandoned illegitimate son of The Fire God) and So-Ah (the neglected & abandoned daughter of an elusive charity crusader) should make a perfect happy loving soulmate couple in reality. Both are extremely beautiful people; both have childhood PTSD; both are trying to do good to atone for their short-comings – he from refraining his dark characteristics tendency; she from being bitter & angry at his father’s over altruism. Blame it on their DNA! Otherwise in the drama, these two could hook up in the end, when Habaek & gang decided it’s time to leave human world after an unforgettable & weary long work-stay-vacation. End of Summer hols, back to school time!

So what was the book with the yellow cover that Ha-baek was reading at about 59:42?
Considering his money problems, I don't suppose he could read a get-rich-quick book, could he?

I always wondered what he's reading. He's always reading something. It makes the story richer knowing the title of these books!

Was there some kind of message we were supposed to get from So-ah's t-shirt or am I reading too much into it?

It says "Il a dit oui" which means "He said yes" in French.

I finally succumbed to it last night and read the first two books of the manga. The manga is just like the drama, giving bits and pieces of information out so very slowly, except as a reader you can read much faster than watching 2 hours of drama weekly. It also helped that it took place in the God's World, where as a reader you're along for the ride with the main character in finding out all the back story of the Gods there. It doesn't work so well when it's in the human world, just frustrating it's little crumbs of info.

I am loving your comments lollypip on how this show has given us a flawed characters, from their leads to its supporting leads. It is fascinating to see that there is no too good person/god or no too bad person/god. Everyone has a mix of characters so that no one of their characters would be fully hated or fully loved. And their flaws just makes me feel attached to the characters more and more. Even the so-called perfect Habaek also flawed in many ways and i am loving it to see him changing even just a tiny little bit. Same goes to So Ah. It is not easy to find a female character like her in kdramas. She has too much flaw that people might not have sympathy on her but at the same time she still has goodness and good qualities in her. Her character thoroughly portrays normal human being in this world.

And i am loving and loving the love story between habaek and so-ah. It is just beautifully tragic and painful that i can feel the pain and my heart aching for them. And i love how both of them always try to speak with each other and trying their best for both of them. i love the way So-Ah tells habaek that they need to stop as they know the endgame. And she asks him to just act like how he is yesterday. Rather than trying to shoo him away and act cold with him to protect herself, she choose to tell the truth to him. Often in other dramas, i have seen the otp choose to stay silence on the matter and just act in their own way to protect themselves/each other without discussing it with their partner.and it often leads to more hurts and misunderstandings. so, i really appreciate how the otp in this show handles their relationship. Though they are confused or hurting, they still try to be honest and bring happiness for each other.

I probably in no place to comment since I just watch the last 15mins of this ep but mannn...that ending.. It was so tense when Huye about to lose control and snap back, then Habek opens that door~ and I end up laughing. His tense face is so...not working the way NJH wants it and it kills the intensity of that scene. Whhhyyyy~~~

Now that Habaek has found his stones I think we should wait for him to leave anytime, but for now it seems like he just want to spend some time with Soah. In the Manhwa, Biryeom had a one-sided crush toward Mural, but she only loved Habaek and she didn't consider his feelings (that's what I got from Manhwa) this explains his behavior in the drama. I wonder what is Huye's relation to twin brothers (Jingeon and Momyung) and why Biryeom wants to get revenge? I feel sad to see Huye getting bullied for what he did/didn't, he really try to control himself because he wants to be a human rather than a monster.... Thanks for recap

Could By-reum be Hu-ye's father?
He said his father hated him.
