Song Joong-ki considers Signal writer’s zombie apocalypse drama
by girlfriday
It’s a big day for Song Joong-ki, who just announced his impending marriage to Descended From the Sun co-star Song Hye-gyo. The two actors met on the set of the hit drama, which started filming back in June of 2015, and are planning to get married this October. Song Joong-ki is also considering a drama comeback as early as later this year in Kingdom, the highly anticipated new project from writer Kim Eun-hee of Signal, Ghost, and Sign. His reps say that he’s considering an offer to headline, but is not confirmed for the role.
Kingdom is a zombie apocalypse sageuk set in Joseon, about a crown prince who sets out to investigate a mysterious plague that’s spreading across his country. What he discovers is an atrocious epidemic in the form of zombies. The blockbuster-scale drama will be helmed by film director Kim Sung-hoon (Tunnel, A Hard Day), and has been planned for a total of 8 episodes which will be completely pre-produced.
Song Joong-ki has played his share of kings and badasses, so I’d vote for him to lead a war against zombies. I’m just happy he’s considering a new drama, even if it’s going to be a measly 8 episodes. I’m mostly excited about seeing the first zombie K-drama, because after watching Train to Busan, my expectations are pretty damn high. But I have every faith that if anyone could write the perfectly thrilling zombie apocalypse drama, it’d be Kim Eun-hee. There’s just something really appealing about Joseon zombies—more swords, fewer resources, more carnage! Yay?
Kingdom will be a Netflix original series, and plans to begin production in September for a premiere later this year.

I love DOTS and I think both SJK and SHK have very good chemistry together.. but to be honest I just didn't see this coming, like at all! So this news took me by surprise this morning. I know that they had their dating rumors now and then.. but the wedding announcement when their relationship hasn't been confirmed before.. Wow what a step. Their love looks just like it comes out of a (good) novel.

Is he really a good enough actor to take the lead on a project of this scale?
I've only watched him in the first half of Deep Rooted Tree, and he was playing a very young and inexperienced king largely dominated by the very competent veterans actors playing his administration and his court (including the "old" king Han Seok Kyu), so it's hard to imagine that his acting is solid enough to justify to serve him such an important place in the new big project of the woman who is currently one the best writer in Korean tv industry ( i know she's factually not the only one best writer but for me she is because she wrote Signal, which put her at a level than nobody else can reach)....

He is. Even with short appearance in TWDR and he was still not very experienced, he left a good impression. He was solid in Nice Guy and A Warewolf Boy as well. DOTS isn't the best project to measure his acting tbh, but the popularity he got from DOTS gives him platform to choose good projects.
I have watched him from TWDR, and from when he started to gain his popularity, so I can be sure this is not an opinion from a fangirl who only saw him in as romantic hero in DOTS and only love his pretty face. ?

He's d@mn good, and neither KEH nor director KSH could have found a better actor to take on this role. He's already proven his sageuk credentials, both in lighthearted and serious fare, and he's already led some hefty projects with big risks (like playing the lead of a 100% pre-produced drama right after his military service), so it doesn't surprise me one bit they made him the offer nor that he's considering it. This is a big risk for him too, but he relishes new ventures so I hope he takes it.

Congratulations on the wedding! It was bound to happen one of these days. They have too many common friends and fan sightings to be merely coincidental. Excited to see the Descendants of the Songs! LOL. And sounds like an interesting project for SJK. Hope he takes it.

Who knew I could be so happy for my favorite actor's engagement?! They seem like they'll be really good for each other, I'm excited! I really hope he takes this role, as well. I loved Signal and think he would kill it in this drama.

Zombies, sageuk, Song Joong Ki and only 8 eps?! Sounds fun to watch. I've only just started to watch Signal and am tempted to start DOTS just cos of the marriage news lol.

Honestly, I'm more interested in this drama due to the writer than anything else. Song Joong-ki's welcome since he's a good actor, and it's better we get someone with talent as the lead, but the real star here is the writer.
Signal, Ghost, and Sign are all dramas that I really enjoyed, due to the writing, with Signal easily being one of the best dramas ever made in Korea. And the premise of this new drama sounds really interesting just because we're talking zombies in Joseon, which allows for a lot of interesting possibilities.
Combine that premise with this writer's track record, and we've got a potentially great drama. Please deliver the goods.
