UEE, Park Shi-hoo consider lead roles in new KBS weekender

There’s a new weekend family drama in the works over at KBS titled My Golden Life, and the lead roles have been offered to UEE (Night Light) and Park Shi-hoo (Neighborhood Hero). The upcoming weekender will center around a heroine who is given an opportunity to elevate her status, but falls further down the socioeconomic ladder and finds happiness despite her circumstances.

If she accepts, UEE would play the heroine, who lived a well-to-do life until her family became financially ruined when she was in high school. She’s now a temp worker in the marketing department of a large corporation, and is described as competitive, with a love of sports, and has a good sense of humor and a refreshing personality. The hero, potentially played by Park Shi-hoo, will naturally play the third-generation chaebol heir being groomed to take over the company our heroine works in. He doesn’t seem to be the regular old cold chaebol type though, and is called a gentleman with an aristocratic air.

I have to admit, this casting news has me feeling a little mixed, because I really like UEE and enjoyed her performances in Ojakkyo Brothers and Marriage Contract, so the news that she might return to another weekender is wholly positive. And then we have Park Shi-hoo. I’m actually quite surprised that KBS, largely considered the most conservative of the Big 3 broadcasters, is the station to potentially have Park Shi-hoo back in his first mainstream (as in, non-cable) role since his scandal, and in a weekend drama at that. On the one hand, the controversy that’s kept him from being active in the Korean entertainment scene is four years old now. On the other, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Korean public, and especially the segment of viewers that tune into wholesome, family-friendly weekend dramas, can get past his history.

Because otherwise, this project has success written all over it: Directing is PD Kim Hyung-suk, whose credits include You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, and writing is So Hyun-kyung of My Daughter Seo-young and Twenty Again. I’m not a huge fan of weekend dramas usually, but I am rather enjoying Father Is Strange at the moment, so I might have to check this out for the director and writer duo alone.

KBS’s My Golden Life will follow Father Is Strange and premiere in August.

I don't know about Park Shi-hoo...but UEE!!!! :D I love her so much. (Side note: Has anybody been watching Law of Jungle in New Zealand?)

I don't usually watch a lot of weekend dramas, but I liked Twenty Again by this writer, plus UEE, I might check it out!

Dunno how it looked like on the telly, but I assure you, NZ is far from scary. Even with cyclones and all. It's just that we rarely get those kinds of stuff (earthquakes are a different deal though) so our preparedness about cyclones are not that great, admittedly. :)

Normally I'd agree, but....In the show, they are in the wilderness in the middle of a cyclone, in which they are meant to build their own shelter and find their own food. Basically they showed up at the worst time for a natural survival show.

Ack I get it now. I watched a preview and oooohhh that was scary/dangerous/deadly. Seriously, that was deadly. People could have died there. People actually die here when they all get adventurous and end up being lost and cold in the wilderness, hence the DOC actually close certain tramping/hiking trails during certain seasons or if the weather is inclement. We are a land of extremes I must say. Ackkkk! I do hope they don't get turned off by that at any rate, since it is my wee wish to see a K-drama set in NZ (that would be really expensive to film though), and specifically somewhere set in the South Island not the North! (HEHE). (Well, it's a win-win either way, Korea gets promoted here and NZ gets promoted there. :) Hehe.)

Nah New Zealand isn't that extreme coming from a Kiwi here. We don't get much natural disasters and its only recent years that there has been much earthquake activity.

I unfortunately cannot watch anything with Park Shi Hoo in it now. I can't get past his scandal and so when I see his face on my screen, all I can think about is his scandal. I cannot fully gage myself in the drama and instead of focusing on the storyline, characters, etc., I find myself focusing in his personal matters. It's too bad because I really liked him before.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a Park Shi Hoo fan. Nothing against the guy, but I just don't care for him as an actor. However, that said, I have a huge problem with this so-called scandal. It's not without careful consideration. When it was happening I did a quick overview of the information and thought the accusations seemed 'fishy'. When it didn't die down I took the time to read ALL the original source material and pretty much concluded thee things: 1) he's no saint (quickly jumps into bed with women); 2) he's tremendously foolish (an A list star working in an industry where a relationship scandal can crater a career...who quickly jumps into bed with a women he knows nothing about?...what a dummy); and 3) the woman in question was a liar. Was there sleazy sex? Yes. Was it rape? No. My conclusion is that she's nothing more than a toned-down Korean version of America's Tawana Brawley.

Do I want to see him in this role or any role. Not particularly. Again, I've never warmed to him as an actor and would prefer to see other people on screen. But three's part of me does hope he succeeds; because I'm convinced he's been falsely accused.

´´Was it rape? No.´´

lol you are his fan.

PSH and his friend confessed the girl was NOT alright. And still PSH slept with her.

But the video shows a unconcious girl being taken inside PSH apartment, and you want to believe she was ´´alright´´ to give consent? Please.

Also, he always said he would go until the end to prove he was innocent, but he decided to hush things up and even dropped his lawsuit against the woman who destroyed his reputation. No way he is innocent.

I'm his fan? Uh, no. I wasn't lying about that. I've seen him as an actor who's too aware of the camera. And a human who cares too much about fame and attention. Plus he kind of ruined Princess Man for me because his teeth are too perfect and white for a sageuk. So there. LOL

I'm also sorry that you see the world through that lens. But please don't try to force me into a fan or anti-fan box. I don't blindly support or villainize anyone. Much less an actor that I don't particularly care for.

We all have to look at all the facts, not just the ones that are convenient for the conclusion we'd like to draw. Case in point: there was also testimony that she wasn't impaired when she left the bar, and left on her own two feet. That's massively inconsistent with what was captured on video.

Part of my professional background is in uncovering large-scale financial fraud. For curiosity's sake I evaluated all the original source information for content, then looked at the logical consistency of the arguments each side was making. My conclusion wasn't based on hearsay and it was impartial.

None of us will ever know the full story. We won't know if she was incapacitated or had made it abundantly clear that she wanted to sleep with him. But I'm pretty darn confident in the conclusion I've drawn about the whole matter.

Her being unconscious was never disputed, and consent was not given at any time during the night to PSH. She left the bar very intoxicated and along the way had become incapacitated. Those facts were never disputed by any parties. PSH camp only started saying she was trying to blackmail him when the whole thing blew up too big for him to handle. He admitted to sleeping with her while she was unconscious, admitted to carrying her unconscious into his place, backed by video, admitted he did not know her well and did not have a relationship with her. Both her and other male involved were there together and PSH was a tag along friend.

You may not be a fan or anti fan but coming up with your own conclusion by questioning the facts of the case and deeming the victim questionable based on personal preference/experience is nothing but confirmation bias, itis an insult to victims in general.

If your background is in fraud as you say, then your brain is likely hardwired to find fault, where you are guilty until proven innocent. I have also worked in this field, social security fauld in particular, and understand very well how fraud is investigated. You assume guilt and seek to find evidence of such, if nothing is found then you conclude innocense.

You are assuming the victim is lying and seek evidence to support your suspicions.

My current job is to assist the most vulnerable of our society, domestic violence, refugees, foster children, homelessness, and I can tell you a victim of sexual assualt is highlh likely going to have conflicting testimony because they mistakenly believe, because society breeds such ideals, that they were somehow at fault and therefore they withold or deny certain facts. It is the job of the investigator and social workers to assist them to speak the truth. We may stand from the point of trust in the victim, but I rather that then victim blaming as a starting point.

I don't think whatever Hwayoung's case is, was anywhere near comparable to sexual assault.

KBS weekend dramas are usually ratings hits, and KBS knows that - they have to know they're basically handing this man a free pass for an image makeover. I don't know why, though - there are plenty of other actors out there and PSH is no loss to the world of kdramas.

That's why I said HwaYoung is a different case. And they don't care about her scandal esp for weekend drama with many characters they can just ignore her if they hate her.

Yes, I do agree there are plenty of actors out there that can lead this drama.

What Hwa Young did, is still a lot less formidable than PSH, IMO the two cases aren't comparable. I would give her a chance to redeem herself, considering she's only 22 year old or something? People can have a change of heart. But it's totally different scenario for Park Shi Hoo.
And to think that these channels are picking up shady people for their shows when there are some real talented hardworking actors out there. Doesn't make any sense.

Maybe it was me who didn't write correctly, I didn't mean to make these two cases look the same or comparing. Like you said she's still young.

I am not with Koreans when they hate on celebs and always for one more chance, but here I really don't think Park Shi Hoo should be somewhere near TV's, I wouldn't want my kid to watch some rapist and think how cool he is. And it would be too disgusting watching him playing heroes.
And to be honest, this guy deserves all the hate, he didn't pay for his crime and got cast in another drama the next day his scandal happened, he/his money managed this story so well that on this article koreans were commenting about disliking UEE's prononciation and not the fact that poor girl is going to have a loveline with this.....

Required fields are marked *

He is still being casted because he was never proven or convicted of a crime. He admitted to sleeping with the girl, having sex is not a crime. The girl's friend went to the police station and admitted they plotted to extort money from him. They release a large amount of text messages between the girl and her friends which outlined how they planned to manipulate the media in order to get a larger settlement. It was a false accusation. Obviously I wouldn't make light if rape claims or sexual abuse those are very serious and heinous crimes. When people make false accusations it makes it harder for real victims to be taken seriously. Just in the last year a whole string of celebrities were falsely accused of rape and the women tried to extort money from them. Rape is not a joke and shouldn't be used as a tool to make money.

However, the concept of: "innocent until proven guilty" is a vital part of our justice system.

In her statements she claimed to be a very good drinker so theirs no way it was just alcohol , she and her friends decided she had to have been drugged, she was drug tested literally the next day and everything was negative. The text messages and recorded phone calls that were released are mind blowing. The calmness and thoroughness of the plan is shocking. They even talk about his net worth so they know how much to demand in settlement money. They talk about releasing a story to the news first so he offers more money. Its just coldness. This is why real victims keep quiet and can't get justice, their afraid people won't believe them.

10

The problem is even if it's "consensual," she was so drunk she had to be carried inside the place, which doesn't make it fit for her to consent. That's a huge lapse of judgement on his part. He also then argued that he was too drunk too. Which only makes the fact that they had sex seem way too sleazy.

12

Required fields are marked *

By her own text messages to her friend she wasn't too drunk, which is why they claimed she was drugged. The mutual friend carried her, which again doesn't mean she was too drunk to walk, it simply could have been a piggy back ride. None of us were there so we only have their statements obviously but from all her messages and phone calls and her own coconspirator admitting it, it seems completely staged.

10

Do you have links to any English or Korean articles about the alleged extortion by the girl and her friends? I would love to read them and it would change my mind about PSH.

Otherwise, I'm skeptical that this is just some unfounded explanations passed around on forums or SNS that people believe and proliferate without evidence.

https://www.koreabang.com/2013/stories/south-korean-drama-actor-park-si-hoo-in-rape-scandal.html If you read Korean they have the actual Korean text from the new sources but they translated it for English speakers. It literally breaks down and covers the whole case. In some of the messages She's saying Kekeke, which is laughter. How could you even laugh about rape or extorting money. its sick.

8

And there's the part where the morning after the so-called rape, they wake up at his place and have sex again, and then again. Then they ate a leisurely brunch together, still at his place. She finally left around 2:00 pm after they had exchanged contact information and agreed to get together again.

After she left she sent giddy texts to her friend about spending the night at his place. (She was just a trainee and he was a huge star at that point). And she wondered if she made a mistake in going that far.

Does anyone who's just been raped do all of that?

Then when it all blew up, it became known that his former agency was somehow involved. It was alleged that they encouraged her to make the rape charges, as retaliation for his leaving the company. (They had helped develop his career. But as soon as he became a top star he left to form his own agency.)

The whole thing just makes me mad. You're right that people who make false accusations ruin lives.

"Does anyone who's just been raped do all of that?"

I'm not going to go over the details of the case as it's been several years and I'm not keen on rehashing old arguments.

I will say however, that this expectation on how exactly a rape victim is supposed to respond after their ordeal is one of the reasons why sexual assault survivors are reluctant to come forward - every bit of their behaviour before and after the crime is scrutinised to a truly microscopic degree in order to judge if they fit the idea of the so-called 'perfect' victim. It's partly why attrition rates for rape cases going through the criminal justice system is so high and cases that do get reported rarely result in convictions; even from the beginning police start their investigations from a place of doubt about the veracity of the accounts of rape. And there are so many factors people use to discount rape accusations, i.e. intoxication, no signs of struggle, not reporting the crime immediately, or as it seems here, not acting appropriately traumatised the morning after the alleged rape.
People react in different ways to cope and it's unwise to dismiss serious rape allegations on the basis of them not acting like 'people who've just been raped'.

P.S Statistically, false rape accusations are very rare, especially in comparison to the number of unreported rapes, yet it's unfortunate though, how quickly it's mentioned as a possibility whenever the topic of rape comes up.

6

Elianne. There have to be standards to ensure each party to the claim is treated fairly and impartially. And if a woman is doing and saying things that (affirmatively) contradict their claims of rape, then that needs to be considered.*

Both parties have to be accountable for their actions. Not just the man.

Justice should always be: innocent until proven guilty. These things are morally equivalent: Denying a woman's legitimate claim that she was raped. Accepting a woman's claim that she was raped, when in fact she wasn't.

A false rape charge leaves a man's life in tatters and unjustly gives him a lifelong stigma as a sexual offender. And the pain and life-upheaval that a falsely accused man suffers is no less legitimate than the pain and life upheaval suffered by a woman who's been raped.

*Caveat: Of course, none of this applies to women who could be physically harmed or killed if they reported a rape. Then silence and life-as-usual is likely the sensible immediate course of action until protective measures can be arranged.

0

"A false rape charge leaves a man's life in tatters and unjustly gives him a lifelong stigma as a sexual offender. And the pain and life-upheaval that a falsely accused man suffers is no less legitimate than the pain and life upheaval suffered by a woman who's been raped."

This is.. No this is not true at all. Yes, falsely accusing ANYONE of any crime, including rape, is a horrible thing to do. But rape victims have more then just the upheaval of their lives to deal with. It creates lasting mental and some have physical issues afterwards. Most rape victims experience Rape Trauma Syndrome. Comparing someone falsely accused (while horrible) to an actual rape victim shows a huge ignorance of how rape actually affects people.

3

Other people commented on other parts so all I would say is, do you REALLY believe he is cast because he is free of charges? I mean Tomorrow with You rejected Lee Min Ki the next day he got sexual assault charges. (And after week he was cleared but no job since that).
Ryu Hwa Young and jung eun were rejected for their attitude scandals.
This industry has tons of talented young people and it definitely knows about it. Park Shi Hoon is in no way that special so it is hella suspectious that he got cast in two dramas when other actors got rejected for a lot less.
I think this doesn't help his case, I mean if he used money and influence for that what else did he use it for?

Sexual assault is a grave issue, and I don't think anyone who has committed one, should expect that they can participate in film or drama media, and people won't find it hard to empathize with him to the least. He can repent all he wants in his home ore wherever, but unless there are proofs out there, that he's making an honest effort it would be hard for any sane person to digest him onscreen. The world is already full of scarier people lol. Besides, I wonder what made Uee choose a project with him in the first place. Since the charges were dropped (it's not known why) no one but those involved can really say what happened. There is evidence saying he is and isn't innocent. I tend to stand with victims of rape unless the alleged rapist has 100% been cleared of the charges. Our society almost always defaults to blaming the victim, so I will be one of those people to stand with the alleged victim over the alleged rapist.

However, I'm not going to call PSH names, or send threatening messages or anything else. I will simply not watch his dramas.

I agree that false accusations do make rape cases harder to believe. However, knowing that many celebs(not just Korean) get away with everything because they can payoff the victim/family/police makes it harder to believe the celeb is completely innocent too.

And for the PSH fans that seriously hate on the victim and who keep telling everyone not to blame him cuz he wasn't convicted and she was a slut, golddigger, etc - there are no words to describe how that attitude contributes to the victim shaming attitudes of police, public, and prosecuting attorneys, as well as judges, and defense attorneys. Learn to defend your celeb without having to drag in the victim.
If I can't hate 'celeb' because I don't know the whole story - you can't hate on the girl/victim for the same reason.

False rape accusations are bad, not just for the one being falsely accused, but it causes issues for those people who have actually been raped.

However, people don't realize that it is only about 2-10% of all rape accusations are determined to be false.

With such a low number (there is a 90% chance the victim is telling the truth) it makes it sad that people are so willing to side with the accused rather then the alleged victim. And to be so vicious to the victim. People were victim blaming her by saying she shouldn't have gotten drunk, shouldn't have been alone with two men, shouldn't have shouldn't have shouldn't have. It's really sad.

It's still early on so chances are PSH will get bumped from the show. But how far should society go in exacting "punishment" from wrongdoers? There are some Korean actors/entertainers who were even convicted of rape, served time and now are back having fairly successful careers again. They already "paid" for their crimes and who am I to tell them to stop acting and working altogether so that I don't have to see their faces on TV even in passing? Also, there are those who were falsely accused and their images ruined and will never be able to get adequately compensated (Lee Jin Wook, Joo Byeong Jin, etc.).

PSH was never convicted. The truth of what really happened that night is between him and his "victim". Still, he paid for the indiscretion by losing most acting opportunities and wasting 4 years of his prime as an actor. He will never reach the level he was at before the scandal even if he comes back through this drama.

While I see your point, it's the idea that the victims shouldn't get to see people who have commited crimes be on tv. I Am particularly of the opinion that sexual assault crimes are unforgivable. I think we as viewers have every right to decide who we see on television and who we don't. As long as we don't watch their programs or pay them any attention advertisers and broadcasters will see there is no money to be made out of that person, and they will have no choice but to dissapear from the industry.

But you are already assuming that PSH has committed some wrong-doing.

Yes. We aren't part of any law enforcement or lawyers or associated with his case. We are people who have the freedom and agency to make our own judgements. Most people side with the accused rapist so I am going to side with the alleged victim and in doing so, I make the choice to not support PSH or watch anything he is in. If you feel he was wrongly accused, that is yours and others prerogative to make that decision and you have the freedom to support him. As long as that support doesn't go as far as victim blaming or attacking the alleged victim (because it was never proven he was innocent) I personally don't care what side you or others stand on.

Better to side with someone based on looking at the information and drawing your own conclusion.

Gidget,

The same can be said to you as well. There is no guarantee that what you have conclude based on the 'look at the information' is 100% correct.

From all the replies, it gives an impression that you are very persistent regarding this case and I found it rare that it is coming from someone who claims as a non fan :)

From all the replies, didn't see you replying to. Those who commented that if he is really innocent, why settled his case outside the court with the woman and dropped the charges? You can't just keep insisting in some evidences while ignoring others and said to others that they don't look at the information and all just their assumptions.

The problem with that argument is that it's a subset of people deciding for all viewers who they should see. If someone doesn't want to see an actor on screen, then just don't watch.

If he's in it, I won't watch. He was caught ON VIDEO with a drunk girl in his house. The whole thing went away after a paid settlement. Park Shi Hoo definitely got away with rape, and it's infuriating to think that people are even offering him projects, and that there are people willing to work with him. I will boycott everything he does. He shouldn't be allowed to exist in this industry.

Since he is rich, should stay out of limelight- maybe start a business? Nobody will watch him

Me too. I miss her chubby face in Ojakgyo Brothers or even some dramas after that. I think she really radiated charm at that time.

Now she looks more sexy and confident, which is great. However, as stated, I'm still a bit uncomfortable with her new face.

I think she was already sexy before. Now she looks more confident but looks so thin & unhealthy. If she was originally that thin, it is OK. Anyway hopefully she is always healthy without need to worry about her weight all times. - because some girls already so thin but keep saying they are fat. sigh

Eww, please no Park Shi-hoo. Please, please, please! I tried watching Neighborhood Hero since I didn't really follow his scandal but I couldn't stomach his on-screen romance. Please Uee, say no if he's confirmed.

Nahhh... Not watching this. While he was not charged, there are few scandals that I cant forget/ignore and do the whole 'separate the art from the artist' thing and rape scandal is one of them. I wont watch PSH as I wont watch anything from Roman Polanski.

I am so happy with Uee coming back to weekend drama but maybe next time?

It's so unfortunate that when I see his face, I can't keep the negative feeling from going away. If he's guilty, then I can't see him in any good light at all. But I also think that in case he is innocent, those negative feelings for him I have for him makes me guilty of judging the innocent before being proven guilty. It's a war between disgust and guilt. Either case, it's not a good feeling.

I don't get it. Here you have people hating on a guy who was cleared of all charges. But on some other articles on dramabeans you'd have fans supporting a guy who had extramarital affair while his wife was pregnant, because 'I don't care about his private life, he's a brilliant actor'.

Honestly I don't care whether a single man has had sexual relations with a woman he barely knew. But I am disgusted by men who have extramarital affair, and still get his behavior excused by fans. The double standards here is appalling.

Because infidelity, while immoral and disgusting, isn't a crime but rape is. And charges being dropped is not the same as being acquitted. I personally didn't follow the case as it happened, I was fairly new to K-ent then, not like I followed Kim Hyun-joong and Park Yoo-chun's cases but I felt really uncomfortable watching him Neighborhood Hero so I'm passing on all his dramas.

Rape is a crime but he wasn't convicted of it. I find it very plausible that he was framed and extorted for money, especially when he had disagreements with his ex-agency. There were people who have motives to ruin his career. Condemning him for a crime he may be innocent of seems very unfair.

He wasn't convicted but he is also not clear of charges due to evidences shown. He did a settlement with the allerged victim. So, while you can talk about him being framed, others also have valid arguements to doubt him.

I don't support PSH but I can't stand LBH either, screw good acting. He's not any more moral than the former however people want to excuse it. Sickens me that LBH gets a pass for "brilliant acting" and continues to do just fine, but that's life...

There are levels for me. I don't know which actor you are speaking about as I tend to not know much about actors private lives. It was actually 1-2 years after this scandal that I learned about it and that was from commenters on here. But again levels. I absolutely cannot forgive rape, sexual assault or abuse. I have someone very close to me that was raped and I've seen first hand how it has literally ruined her life (she has severe depression, anxiety, nightmares and PTSD from it). You feel extramarital affairs are worse, and while horrible, I personally think rape is one of the worst things you can do to another human. And because PSH was never proven innocent I will stand fully with the alleged victim.

If you think this is a double standard from me because I give some things a pass but not others, that's fine. But there are some things I can let slide and some things I absolutely cannot.

I've had people close to me who've experienced rape, adultery, and *sigh*(spousal) rape plus adultery. All were extremely painful and pushed the women to the edge of what they could endure. But all recovered, through the support of friends/family, grit, and a sheer determination to NOT let it ruin their life.

Women have an awesome capacity for showing strength and resilience.

I dont know if he is innocent or not. But many women are money hungry these days. I dont watch his dramas after the scandal. I actually think he is a good actor. I love Uee after i saw her in Hogu's love with Choi Woo Shik. Earnest puppies. I'd love to support them.

PSH wasn't cleared of all charges.

The girl was drunk or was drugged (her exams didn't show known drugs but could be something else)

There is a VIDEO, I watched it, and there is no way the girl was concious!! She was completely blackout.

PSH said he would prove he was innocent; but refused to go to police many times, until the police almost went go get him himself.

PSH said he didnt drink, so he wasn't drunk, and could make decision to take girl to home not sleep with her.

He slut shamed her in the media, released info, and tried everything to make her image destroyed;

He said he would never drop lawsuit and go until the end, but the proofs were not on his favor, and after the case got dragged too much, and the girl lost her job, had her info released to public and slut shamed so much, PSH and the girl did a settlement and dropped the lawsuits of defamation against her and stayed hush for some time.

How a innocent person, with money and media on his favor would agree to a settlement ?? he did it because he was guilty and settlement are off court, so this made her drop the case and PSH didn't have charges pressed agaisnt him. He was never cleared off it though.

He said he would go until the end, but didn't clear his image. If he was really innocent he would never drop the lawsuit.

The fact that he settled with the victim instead of pursuing it to the end to clear his name once and for all I find suspect as well. What really got to me was his attitude toward women in general. That they are things for his amusement. Perfectly OK in his mind to sleep with a drunk girl who may or may not know what is going on. Also perfectly OK in his mind to pass her around and take turns "doing" her with his friend. That was enough right there to turn me off him for life, irregardless of the rape charges.

When I saw this all I could think is....It's a lead balloon. I can't believe Uee's people would even consider pairing her with him. I don't like her as an actress but she's way to popular right now to stick her with someone like him. He's never going to recover from his scandal. People still call him a rapist.

Uee has turned down the offer.
A wise move from her part. Not only she has to face this guy as a co-star and how people are against seeing him on screen. But she also has to face his famous evil rabid ahjummas. Look at this comment box and some trolling with the downvotes.
