Fight My Way: Episode 10
by LollyPip
One step forward, two steps back… Just when it was looking like everyone was making some fantastic strides towards maturity and honesty, events conspire to put them back in their places. It’s frustrating to watch two couples who can’t just say what they’re feeling, bad or good, because by trying to avoid the risk of being hurt themselves, they only end up hurting each other. But some people manage to push forward despite that, and there’s plenty of cuteness to go around too, making the frustrating moments completely worth the pain.
Round 10: “Some or whatever”
The ringing phone wakes Ae-ra in her motel room, and she looks over to see Dong-man sleeping next to her. She checks under the covers and gasps, then pops Dong-man in the forehead, jarring him awake painfully.
Ae-ra also sits up, revealing that she’s still in her bathrobe. She barks at Dong-man for sleeping shirtless in her room, and he covers himself primly, saying that she was in the mood to drink. She snaps back that he said he’d leave when Coach Hwang returned to the motel. He keeps asking her over and over, “Do you really not remember?”
Ae-ra does remember something… She watched Dong-man sleeping late into the night, and reached out to softly touch his face. She whispered out loud, “Why do you have to be so handsome? You make me so tense.”
She grazed his face, and then when she reached his lips, Ae-ra leaned in close as if to kiss him. But she backed off at the last moment and turned her back. Behind her, Dong-man opened his eyes, having been awake the whole time.
Then later into the night, Dong-man watched Ae-ra sleep, incredulous that she could sleep at a time like this. In her sleepy haze, she slid an arm over him and snuggled close, making Dong-man forget to breathe. He looked down at her face and reached out to push her hair off her forehead, and she sighed and cuddled even closer.
Once he recovered for the second time, Dong-man leaned over to place the tiniest of kisses on Ae-ra’s forehead. He closed his eyes and drifted off, and a while later he grew hot and pulled his shirt off in his sleep.
In the morning, he complains about Ae-ra blowing her hot breath on his face, revealing that he felt her touching his face, but Ae-ra tells him to forget it. Dong-man refuses, so Ae-ra goes on the offensive and asks why he’s bare-chested. He doesn’t know, and he gives Ae-ra a cheeky look and asks if she took his shirt off.
There’s a sudden knock at the door, and Dong-man assumes it’s Coach Hwang and goes to answer. But whoever it is has Dong-man rearing back in terror as Ae-ra shakes her head in horrified denial. She narrates that in life, timing is always terrible.
One hour prior to the motel door opening, we see four people descending upon Daecheon at the same time. Dong-man’s acquaintance Kyung-ku travels on a work-related excuse, and Hye-ran grows angrier as her calls to Dong-man go unanswered. Ae-ra’s father has decided to surprise her by coming to see her emcee today, but all we see of the fourth person is a pair of gold high heels.
Thirty minutes before the door opens, Ae-ra’s dad arrives at the event stage, worried that Ae-ra isn’t picking up her phone. He finds the director talking to Coach Hwang and says he’s the MC’s father, so Coach introduces himself.
Coach Hwang walks Ae-ra’s dad to the motel, complimenting him on his strong daughter. He says that he’s more scared of Ae-ra than any other woman in the world, then he slips and calls her “Microphone Wacko” (his nickname for her), making Dad bristle at him.
As they enter the motel lobby, a woman in gold heels quickly slips into the office. She frog-hops across the room, trying to avoid being seen, and HAHA, it’s Landlady Hwang. She shows photos of Dong-man and Ae-ra to the clerk ajumma, who confirms that they stayed here last night.
Ten minutes before the motel door opens, Kyung-ku has found the event stage and is schmoozing the director to let him take pictures. He seems annoyed when the director gushes about Dong-man’s talent.
One minute before Ae-ra’s motel door opens, Coach Hwang and Ae-ra’s dad knock on her door, but nobody answers. The other fighter, Doo-ho, comes out of his room and tells them that Dong-man didn’t sleep in his room. Coach mutters that he didn’t sleep in his room, either.
It dawns on all of them simultaneously where Dong-man must have slept. Ae-ra’s dad pounds on her door furiously, and when it opens, they’re as shocked to see Dong-man as he is to see them. Ae-ra’s dad takes in the scene—shirtless Dong-man, Ae-ra in bed—and assumes the worst.
Dong-man tries to escape, begging Coach Hwang with his eyes to help him, but Ae-ra’s dad tells him in a too-calm voice to close the door. Dad starts taking off his watch and shirt, revealing a scary-looking tattoo on his shoulder… of Ae-ra’s name and birthdate (heh). Coach reaches out to dramatically caress Dong-man’s face one last time, then Dong-man resolutely turns to accept his fate.
Unable to find Dong-man’s motel, Hye-ran instead takes a seat at the show venue. She eavesdrops on the director talking about how great Ae-ra was yesterday, and how she’ll be a star.
Landlady Hwang makes her way upstairs, and she presses her ear to Ae-ra’s motel door alongside Coach Hwang. Coach seems to recognize her, and he starts to ask, “How are you… “ but a loud THWAP from inside the room makes them both cringe.
Ae-ra’s dad delivers a solid beating to Dong-man with a coat hanger as Dong-man whines that Ae-ra already hits him all the time. Dad asks what he’s after by sleeping here, and Dong-man promises that even if the two of them were stranded on a desert island, he’d only consider her like a native or a monkey. Dad snarls, asking what’s wrong with Ae-ra, and Dong-man resigns himself to another beating.
Coach Hwang asks Landlady Hwang why she came all this way, and she barks that sleeping in the same room before marriage is forbidden. LOL. Coach notes that she’s speaking to him in banmal, and she says it’s because she’s older. He tries to ask if they’ve met before, but she cuts him off with a sharp denial.
At dinner with Seol-hee’s parents, Joo-man starts to suggest that their families get together to discuss the wedding, but Seol-hee’s mom says there’s no reason to rush, bringing up a wealthy suitor who’s just waiting in the wings to marry Seol-hee. Joo-man gets a text from Ye-jin in the middle of the meal, but he ignores it.
In private, Mom gives Seol-hee a gold paperweight that represents the last of the family’s money, telling her to spend it on her wedding. Mom says she saved it specifically for Seol-hee and tells her to stop being so timid and insecure, and that if Joo-man upsets her, she should dump him.
Joo-man and Seol-hee’s father have a chat, and her dad says that unlike families who have daughters while trying for sons, they had three sons trying for a daughter. Awwww. He makes it crystal-clear that he thinks Seol-hee is too good for Joo-man. He warns Joo-man not to look down on her, or keep getting phone calls that he shouldn’t answer, or he’ll kill him.
Ae-ra’s dad beams as he watches his daughter prepare to emcee today, and Dong-man begs her dad not to tell his dad about what he’s doing today or he’ll tattle about the coat hanger beating. They’re all surprised to see Kyung-ku there, and not in a good way. Kyung-ku pretends that he’s just recognizing Ae-ra, when it’s obvious that she’s the real reason he’s here.
Tak-soo’s manager, Tae-hee, pops by to talk to Doo-ho. He tells Doo-ho that Byung-joo, the rude fighter whom Dong-man just beat in his last match, has switched to Tak-soo’s team. He offers Doo-ho a spot on their team too, and when Doo-ho tries to decline, he’s told to think a while before answering.
Knowing that his defection would mean leaving Dong-man alone, Doo-ho asks what Tae-hee is after. Tae-hee just says that Doo-ho should think about his baby son, who has bad skin allergies.
Kyung-ku brags to Ae-ra that he’s a PD at KBC now, but she just gives him serious side-eye as he brags. He says that he could have made some calls if he’d known she wanted to be an announcer, but she sternly forbids him to mention her to anyone.
A bit later, Ae-ra is still frowning at Kyung-ku. She asks angrily why Dong-man told Kyung-ku she was here, but he says that he didn’t. Curious, Ae-ra asks how he and Kyung-ku reconnected, and Dong-man admits that Kyung-ku called him and promised him a blind date. Aaawkward. Ae-ra asks if he went on the date, and Dong-man just goes, “Huh?” Ae-ra says accusingly that he did go (Dong-man: “Huh?”), and that he met someone (another “Huh?” LOL).
Joo-man and Seol-hee meet up with friends for lunch, where one of the couples talks about their wedding plans and the groom’s recent promotion. Seol-hee reveals that she and Joo-man will be planning their own wedding soon, but Joo-man seems uneasy and quickly changes the subject.
After lunch, Seol-hee says she thinks it strange that their friend is marrying someone he’s only known a few months, rather than the girlfriend he dated for years. Joo-man doesn’t seem to find that weird at all. Seol-hee notes that Joo-man is cranky, and asks if it’s because his friend got a promotion and he hasn’t yet.
She complains that she doesn’t want Ye-jin’s aunt to be the reason he’s promoted, and Joo-man takes exception to her insinuation that he would only be promoted because Ye-jin likes him. Seol-hee says that she’s okay if he stays an assistant manager forever, but Joo-man gets frustrated and says he isn’t okay with that.
Seol-hee tells Joo-man that she just wants to enjoy the small things in life with him, but Joo-man asks why their happiness has to be so small. Joo-man sighs that if nothing changes, then they’ll never be able to buy an apartment or a car, get married, or have babies. He says that he wants to be able to brag about himself to his friends, to have something to be proud of.
Seol-hee hugs him and says worriedly that she feels like he’s changing. Joo-man steps out of her arms and says that people can’t stay the same forever, and you can’t live life like you’re playing house.
Just before the show starts, Ae-ra asks Dong-man how she looks, and he manages to say that she’s pretty. She asks if he meant what he said about how he’d feel if they were on a deserted island, and when he doesn’t answer, she whines, “Why would you respect me so much?” Hee.
Suddenly serious, Dong-man tells Ae-ra that alcohol saved her yesterday. She splutters at him, and he steps closer to rest his hands on her neck and asks if she wants to go to a deserted island with him. Is it suddenly hot in here?
Looking up at him, Ae-ra asks nervously, “Right now, we’re really, really, really not just friends, right?” She asks if they’re in a “some” kind of relationship and Dong-man laughs. He tells her to stop talking nonsense and pinches her cheeks, and sends her to the stage.
When she begins rehearsing, the director freaks out about Ae-ra not being told something, and suddenly Hye-ran steps onstage with a mic. She admits that she must be evil because she doesn’t like seeing Ae-ra excited, but she doesn’t look one bit sorry about the fact that she’s just deliberately taken Ae-ra’s MC job. Heartbroken, Ae-ra pushes her confused father away from the stage area as Dong-man arrives and takes in the situation.
Ae-ra’s dad insists that he didn’t come just to see her on stage, but to bring her food from his restaurant. Ae-ra barely holds back her tears as she tells him to go, and he tucks some money into her pocket. She snaps that she’s not a child to need money from her father, yelling that he’s making her feel ashamed.
Through gasping sobs, she asks why he came now, just to see her like this, but her dad says that there’s nothing in the world she needs to hide from him. He says that in life, everyone has their own level to play in, and Ae-ra asks incredulously if he’s telling her not to dream. But he explains that a tiny country stage like this isn’t big enough for her. Awww, Dad…
Dad gets in his truck with one last parting curse for Dong-man, and Ae-ra tells him to come the next time she calls him, because next time she’ll be on a grand stage. Dad says that even if she’s in North Korea, he’ll cross the 38th parallel to be there.
After he leaves, Ae-ra sniffles and wipes her nose on Dong-man’s sleeve. She tells him to go because she doesn’t want him to see her crying anymore, and that she’s going back to Seoul. He tells her to wait until tonight and they’ll go together, but she insists on going alone.
That night, Joo-man gets a text from Ye-jin threatening to sleep in the street if he doesn’t come out. He fibs to Seol-hee that he’s going to see his guy friends, and she seems to sense that something is up.
After the show, Doo-ho flips through pictures of his son, then he tells Dong-man that he wants to fight him some time, and that he thinks Dong-man is very strong. Dong-man’s in a bad mood, and when Hye-ran leaves the stage, he shoots her a dirty look.
Ye-jin has been drinking again, and Joo-man repairs her ripped skirt with safety pins. He asks why she hasn’t been coming to work, and she whines that she still likes him. He asks why and she screeches that she wants him to pay attention to her. Her outburst reminds Joo-man of when he and Seol-hee were first acquainted—she’d said much the same to him, complaining that she liked him and wanted him to pay attention to her.
Wailing in earnest, Ye-jin sobs that she feels like she’s dying. Joo-man reaches out to dry her tears with his sleeve, and it’s this cozy scene that Seol-hee witnesses when she steps around the corner.
Hye-ran nastily berates the event director for being unprofessional and disorganized, sneering that nobody can do this job without a script. He mutters that one person can, then asks his assistant if Ae-ra is gone already.
As Ae-ra waits for her bus back to Seoul, Kyung-ku pulls up to offer her a ride. She’s reluctant, but she gets in his car just as a text from Dong-man arrives asking her again to wait for him. Kyung-ku joins her in the car and locks the door, which sets off my creep-o-meter big time. He asks how her friend Chan-sook’s wedding went since he wasn’t invited, and Ae-ra asks why Chan-sook would have invited him.
But something suddenly occurs to her, and she asks suspiciously, “How did you know I went to Chan-sook’s wedding?” Further, she wants to know how he knew about this festival. Kyung-ku says that Dong-man told him about it, but Ae-ra knows that’s a lie because Dong-man already told her that he didn’t mention it.
She asks point-blank if Kyung-ku is stalking her on social media, and he stammers that he’s not. But his car has a navigation computer, and all it takes is one push of a button to prove that he’s got her address programmed into it. Ae-ra tells Kyung-ku that it’s his fault she gets chills whenever she hears percussion bands. Oooh, Kyung-ku is the guy in the band that she and Chan-sook fought about!
She tells him to delete his social media account and to never show his face to her or Dong-man again. Kyung-ku puts on his most pitiful face and says that he’s not the same person he used to be, but Ae-ra doesn’t care. She orders him to unlock the door, and after she gets out of the car, he says under his breath that he’s changed—that he’s not the same pushover anymore. Uh-oh.
Joo-man puts Ye-jin in a taxi, but it only gets as far as the curb before Seol-hee yanks open the door. She asks if Ye-jin thinks she’s a joke, but Ye-jin says that she feels like the joke, as if Seol-hee has been laughing at her. Seol-hee counters that this isn’t one bit funny, and begs Ye-jin to stop and to unfriend Joo-man on social media.
Seol-hee is shocked when Ye-jin refuses. She says that she has no intention of stopping, vowing to take advantage of the weakness in their relationship to sway Joo-man towards her. Seol-hee goes home distraught, too upset to go inside, so she just sits outside the door sobbing about the safety pins Joo-man used to fix Ye-jin’s skirt, saying that that’s her thing.
It’s 2011, and Seol-hee worked at a movie theater with Joo-man as her boss. He came to her rescue when she struggled with the register, and she was smitten by his efficient capability. Later he chastised her for repeatedly causing trouble, but he had difficulty looking directly at her.
He handed Seol-hee a safety pin and pointed out a missing button on her shirt. He fussed at her for being careless and called her distracting, but when she offered to quit, he told her to stay where he can keep an eye on her.
Later they went out drinking with their coworkers, and Joo-man seemed bothered by the attention one guy paid to Seol-hee. Seol-hee excused herself and the guy followed her out to plant a surprise kiss on her, but he was hit upside the head with a flying soda bottle. He turned to see Joo-man running at him, fists and feet flying.
Joo-man lost the fight and Seol-hee hung back to doctor his wounds. He angrily accused Seol-hee of being entirely too cute, what with her adorable little dress and her big eyes and her smile, and he pounded his chest as he said she was making him crazy.
Seol-hee yelled, “It’s because I like you! It’s because I wanted you to look at me that I wore this dress and smiled so much!” Joo-man muttered that she was too darn pretty, then swooped in for their first kiss.
Back in the present, Dong-man sits Hye-ran down for a serious talk, asking why she’s acting like this. She asks coyly if she’s not acting like herself, but he says she’s acting exactly like herself. She smiles, but he tells her to scream and cry if she’s upset, because it’s less pathetic.
Hye-ran asks if he means the way Ae-ra does, and he says that Hye-ran is much more pathetic than Ae-ra. Her eyes going hard, Hye-ran asks why he never dated Ae-ra if she’s so great, adding that she always knew he was unsure. Dong-man says that he and Ae-ra have spent twenty years together, and Hye-ran tells Dong-man not to confuse long-term comfort with liking Ae-ra. She says that if it hasn’t been Ae-ra for the last twenty years, then it will never be her.
She says that she’s acting crazy because Dong-man is the only man for her, pouting that he said she was his first love. Dong-man concedes that she was his first love, but he was young and foolish and let himself get hurt. He says that his first love has ended, and now, “I only see Ae-ra.” Swoon.
He stands to leave, but she stops him and says that he was just as cruel to her as she was to him. She glances over to see Ae-ra outside watching them, so she tries to kiss Dong-man.
Ae-ra turns away so that she doesn’t have to see the kiss, which means that she misses Dong-man shoving Hye-ran away. She’s familiar with this scene, and a flashback shows her turning away to avoid seeing them kiss at a party. Another flashback of the friends at a romantic movie has Ae-ra snarling from one row back as Hye-ran puckered up for a kiss, but Dong-man refused it with a glance back towards Ae-ra.
Yet another flashback shows Ae-ra buying Dong-man some Valentine’s chocolates since he got dumped. But she saw them talking in the street, and when Hye-ran tilted her head up for a kiss, Ae-ra whirled around. She didn’t see Dong-man walking away from Hye-ran, and just threw the chocolate away.
Back in the present, Ae-ra narrates that in life, timing was always terrible, and she always ran away. She runs away again now, not wanting to see Dong-man and Hye-ran together yet again. But Dong-man pushes Hye-ran off, then he spots Ae-ra walking away. He forgets everything and chases after her, turns her to him, and kisses her soundly. WOW.
Ae-ra looks up at him in confusion when he ends the kiss. He says that he won’t lose her again, and that he doesn’t want to go around the long way again. He steadies her as her knees buckle, and he tells her to stand strong. So that she doesn’t misunderstand, he says, “We’ve already kissed, and I don’t know how to do ‘some’ or whatever it’s called. If we’ve kissed, it’s our first day. Let’s date.”
This time it looks like Ae-ra’s brain has shorted out, so he asks her again to date, then a third time in a pleading voice. She unfreezes enough to give him a tiny nod, and Dong-man says that now that they’re dating, he wants to do it again. Ae-ra asks what he means, so he repeats, “I want to do it again,” and he leans in for another kiss. This time, she kisses him back.
Epilogue.
Coach Hwang lights firecrackers on the beach to entertain Landlady Hwang, but when they fail to fire, she tells him to just sit and relax. He asks her excitedly, “But… it is you, right?” He starts to say a name, Hwang Bok-… but she puts a finger over his lips and says that she goes by Kanako Hwang now.
Coach Hwang asks how long she plans to live in the villa, and Landlady Hwang says dramatically, “I’ll live there forever.” Coach Hwang grins like a little boy.
COMMENTS
I’m done. I’m a puddle. That kiss was so worth the wait! I love that we got to see that Ae-ra and Dong-man have been through this before, multiple times, but their timing was always off. And it makes me feel better knowing that Dong-man has low-grade rejected Hye-ran because of his feelings for Ae-ra before, he just didn’t know that Ae-ra felt the same as he felt. Love really is all about timing, and thank goodness they’re finally in the same place at the same time.
I’m realizing that something I really love about our lovable moose is how he says exactly what he’s thinking, exactly when he’s thinking it. In most dramas, the hero would never tell the heroine that he was awake when she touched his face, but Dong-man just talks about it like it’s no big deal. And it’s just so adorably endearing how he says without any artifice that he wants to kiss Ae-ra again. If it were any other character, this constant telegraphing of his feelings would take the tension out of the moment, but somehow when Dong-man does it, it just makes the moment even more tingly and special.
But on the flip side—Joo-man has done so well up until now, but he’s about to screw it all up. In his defense, weak though it is, one of the problems between him and Seol-hee is that she’s genuinely happy with a mediocre life. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Joo-man wants more. By trying to be supportive and saying that she doesn’t care if he’s ever promoted, Seol-hee is unintentionally emasculating Joo-man by implying that she doesn’t think he’s capable of better. It’s not true, of course, and Joo-man probably knows that, but I can see why a young, beautiful woman who triggers his weakness for damsels in distress looks appealing.
Ye-jin makes Joo-man feel needed and capable, but it’s still wrong for Joo-man to be spending time with Ye-jin alone outside of work. I’m just saying that I can see why, in his current emotional state of feeling inadequate, he’s drawn to a girl who makes him feel important. I’m still going to be very very disappointed if he starts to encourage her, because so far he’s done a great job of drawing that boundary, but I’m afraid that by meeting her at night and lying to Seol-hee about it, that ship has already sailed. As for Ye-jin, I don’t think much of her now that she’s admitted to pursuing Joo-man deliberately. With all the whining and pouting, she comes across like a child who refuses to accept that she can’t have a certain toy because it already belongs to someone else.
But it’s Hye-ran who really crossed a line in this episode by stealing Ae-ra’s MC job for no other reason than because she could. That’s three times now that she’s sabotaged Ae-ra’s career, but this time was arguably the worst because Ae-ra actually had the job, and Hye-ran took it out of sheer spite. I wanted to cheer when the director asked in front of Hye-ran if Ae-ra was still available. I do appreciate that we learned that Hye-ran is human and always felt unsettled because of Ae-ra, which explains her competitiveness, but Dong-man is right—that’s all in the past, and it’s time for them to move forward.
But despite all the bad things that happened in this episode (is anyone else terrified of Kyung-ku now?), the most important thing is that Dong-man and Ae-ra are now officially a couple! I’m so ridiculously happy. Watching them figure out how to transition from friends to lovers is going to be hilarious and swoony and wonderful, particularly when they’re so open and honest about what they’re feeling at any given moment. They’ve been so great about checking in with each other once they’d established that they were both having confusing feelings. With that kind of connection, not to mention their stratospheric physical attraction, their romance is going to be one of the greats.

THAT KISS. THAT KISS. I am happy beyond words. I love how it was set up, and the little flashbacks made it so much more meaningful because we get to see how deep Ae-ra's hurt is over Dong-man's constant acceptance for Hye-ran, but also that Dong-man isn't immune to Hye-ran's manipulative side and he has rejected her in the past. Now, finally, their timing is perfect, which makes the moment seem even more satisfying and swoon-worthy.
Okay but Hye-ran, I'm sure this goes without saying, pISSES ME OFF. She's so...nasty. Just a snake. Sure, she's competitive, but like.....is going to those lengths REALLY necessary? If she wants Dong-man so bad, why is she trying to destroy his best friend's entire life?? She must be really full of herself to think she can hurt his friends and still be The One in his eyes. Ugh she makes me so mad. You have no idea how happy I was when the director asked for Ae-ra, which is probably the equivalent to a smack across the face for Hye-ran. The proof that Ae-ra is genuinely talented in comparison to Hye-ran is so satisfying. Sure, Hye-ran can do a solid job, but she doesn't have the skill to improv well and control the mood of the audience.
Ye-jin is getting on my nerves now. I agree with what you said, she's just a child. She has no sense of boundaries, even after Joo-man asked her to back off. It doesn't help that Joo-man is letting her get away with murder. Poor Seol-hee, I cheered when she finally found her voice and asked Ye-jin to stop, but it backfired on her. I feel so bad for her, especially since she tries so hard and cares so much for Joo-man. Her dad was right when he said she's too good for Joo-man.
ALSO (sheesh, this is getting long) Kyung-ku scares me a lot lol. He seems so creepy and I don't trust him one bit.
Okay (I promise this is it), who is Landlady Hwang? Where did she come from? I love her, she's awesome and hilarious, but like....who what when where why? I'm confused as to why she's so invested in everyone else's lives lol. Eh, I guess we'll find out when the show decides it is time. As for now, she's great :'D

I really loved this too! I'm so hoping that Ae-ra will be rewarded for her talent with a job worthy of her. (It doesn't always happen in the real world, which is what this drama is showing us.)

Since the director say her talent, maybe he'll scout her for other things? We can hope...........

Im so glad I'm not the only person screaming WHO ARE YOU! about the landlady. I definitely love her character but I really want to know how she fits into the overall picture of the relationships in this show. Could she be AeRa's mum?
Gosh all these questions.

I really liked that the flashbacks were added to that scene. You can see DM progressively distancing himself from HR and then in the present putting the final wall up. A very nice setup.

Since Monday is still a long long way off, it's time to rewatch this...oh dear, am I the only crazy one here? ?☺️ Dunno what's it about this drama but it seems to be sending us all into a tizzy (judging by how fast and furious the comments are coming here)!

Dong Man's facial expressions are the best. My favorite part was when he opened the hotel door. Also, can't wait to find out what's going on with Coach and the landlady.

My favorite is when he suddenly went deaf when Ae Ra grilled him on going to a blind date. You can see his brain trying to think of a way out but he's not quick witted enough and just went “what?“ to AR's questions.

I'm starting to see this show as a study in realtionships how one begins (DM and AR) one ends (JM and SH)...
I love how DM and AR seem to know they both like each other more than the percieved friendship and now has finally acknowledged it...
And for JM and SH, I feel like they're relationship is coming to an end, something both know but just won't acknowledge yet... It's not because they don't love each other but it is more because they have different futures in mind and sometimes love isn't enough...

i honestly think everyone in this drama acted extremely well. no one has to make up for anyone's flaws etc. it's crazy hilarious most of the time and touching when we need some reality. Love Park Seo Joon...and his well toned body. period.

I thought that too! Especially since DM and Ae-Ra's father know each other well enough he can call him to tell on Ae-Ra. Then again I thought fit would mean something like throwing all the trash in the hotel room at him while DM's scrambled around trying to explained and avoid being hit that is in till Coach helped whisked him away....

He certainly made up for lost time though, hehehe. That confession was just so straightforward and perfect and arghhhh!!! I really can't wait to see these two bumble through their day 1, 2, 3, 4 and pretty much every day after that because I know it's going to be as delightfully awkward and fun as it's been, just with even more giddy adorableness! Staying up till 2am to watch the episodes without subtitles and guess what they were saying was all worth it. I mean, even without subtitles, one can simply squeee watching them fall asleep / wake up in bed together, and kiss.
Some questions/ observations:
- Did Dong Man kissing Ae Ra on her forehead give her a pimple ( is that what the show wanted us to deduce haha )? Because if so, he should just stick to kissing her on the lips from now on, where he is less likely to affect her complexion.
- what did he mean by "alcohol saved you yesterday" haha. Meaning she was drunk so he didn't take advantage of her? ( she didn't look that drunk to me - still can kill cockroach ) or he was too drunk to take advantage of her? ( hello I thought it's precisely when people are drunk that "things occur" haha ).
- a minor OCD point: the scene where he grabs her hand and tells her that alcohol saved her, and then holds her neck with both hands and pulls her close, asking " why ? Do you want to go to a deserted island with me" was sexy, but I thought it would be sexier / smoother for him to continue holding her right wrist with his left hand, and just pull her closer with his right hand on her neck ( but nvm pls ignore me haha) . While I do like the scenes when he says suggestive things (like asking her if perhaps she took off his shirt in the middle of the night), I always find them slightly incongruent like he goes from being a "moose" to almost a player and back to a "moose" within seconds
- why do they keep bringing in psychos for Ae Ra. I thought we just got rid of Moo Bin and now there's this Kyung Ku - I almost thought he wouldn't unlock the door for her when she asked to be let out of his car. And I read some other recap allegeing that the drink he handed her might have been spiked (?) While Kyung Ku may be the person Ae Ra and her friend who married the balding old rich doctor were "fighting" over, or the guy in the percussion band that Dong Man referred to when discussing Ae Ra's past failed relationships, what I don't understand is why Dong Man went to meet him earlier on in the show , and agreed to appear on his talk show as a stand in ( the one where he met Moo Bin again and Moo Bin won, and pretended not to recognise Dong Man ) . There was even a scene where all 3 of them were eating together but not once in that second ep did Kyung Ku mention Ae Ra and now he's suddenly crazy about her / stalking her (?) Anw I guess they need psychos to be the foil to their relationship for the next 6 eps. I mean we can't just keep watching them kiss or Dong Man take off his shirt.
- why is it not okay for Dong Man and Ae Ra to sleep together according to Landlady Hwang, but okay for Joo Man and Seol Hee ? Haha

DongMan and AeRa give me all the feels in all the world. Love them, they are so well balanced it makes me happy.
BUT can we please discuss the fool JooMan? I'm sorry LollyPip, whilst I love that you are recapping this drama (love all your recaps ?) I think you are making HUGE excuses for His foolish and reckless behaviour.
A woman who is content with who you are now & who values the small things that you guys can do together is to to cherished PERIOD!
Are you kidding me! SeolHee has been though the gutter with him and she still worships the ground he walks on. Expressing her contentment for who he is should encourage him not emasculate him. If he thinks a good job and bragging rights are the things that make a man worthy then his idea of manhood is fragile and weak!
Seriously a woman who loves you and is always loyal to you no matter what should be the epitome of his desires. Would he be content with a woman who actually aggressively questioned his abilities as a man?
As far as I have seen, SoelHee has never belittled him or his dreams. She's always PAYED HIS BLOODY WAY THROUGH LIFE. Even buying him that expensive bag.
And what does she get in return? This fool that lies to her about who he is going to meet? Are you serious?!?!?
Does he think he is the best she can do or something? Is he looking down on her?
Gosh it's driving me crazy. Women like SoelHee should be LOVED AND CHERISHED by their lovers. ALWAYS! NEVER EVER to be taken from granted.
She deserves so much better & im mad because this show is giving me Nice Girls Finish Last vibes & I hate that. NICE GIRLS Should finish first because they are amazing!

Slight difference of opinion: Nice girls need to have self-respect too. Her bending-over-backwards at that party organised by her awful in-laws was not ok. With JM though, SH has been pretty straightforward about asking him to stay away from YJ. And, I appreciate that.
I wish they had continued their conversation during that 'ice-cream walk' - they need to talk over their differences. Both need to communicate (JM more so). But, they shouldn't be together just because she is NICE and self-sacrificing (with that logic, most K-drama female leads should commit to the second leads). If nice people are nice so that they can get something out of it, then that's not truly being nice, is it? SH also likes taking care of others. She gets her self-affirmation from being the mother hen. And, good for her.
Yes, JM is being a confused a** and he really need to sort himself out. He needs to stop taking SH for granted. But SH is also not being very honest with herself or JM about their frayed relationship.

Thanks for the recap Lollypip! Maybe it's in the wording, but I don't think Seol-hee is happy with a mediocre life, but she can find happiness even if handed a mediocre life. Why can't poor, or regular people here, be happy? Yes, money woes will make their life hard, but does that have to take away their happiness? Can only the rich be happy?! Are rich people happier? One is probably happier struggling striving for their dreams than working a decent paying job having forsaken their dreams. Dreams can change, and life can change or kill your dreams.
I think there is nothing wrong with wanting a simple life. Seol-hee's dream has always been to be a housewife, and maybe as Jooman said, a power blogger (not sure why she can't blog now, unless she wanted to blog about married life??) Unfortunately, what she needs to understand is that in order to be a housewife, her husband has to be in a position to be able to support them both, plus children down the line, else financial burdens will be an additional issue that could tear their marriage apart. So I can understand Jooman feeling pressured to make more, whether that is his own ambition or a combination of his ambition and need to provide for Seol-hee and future children.
There is nothing wrong with wanting and finding happiness in a simple life, being happy with what you have, as there is nothing wrong in wanting a better life, being ambitious and wanting more than what you have. Here we have two people who have different views, does it mean they can't be together? No, but they have to understand and respect each other, and work together. There are plenty of young people still pursuing their dreams that are married. Like being in college together and married. So why can't Seol-hee and Jooman be married while pursuing their dreams?! Why can't she be the supportive housewife while Jooman works towards his promotion? Then they would both be doing what they want and still be together.
Their relationship so far has been about cute sweet love but they are at a point now where they are realizing that love is not enough. I thought previously that Seol-hee needed her own identity/self-respect, but now I'm wondering if maybe she needs her identity as a housewife in order to flourish. As yes, in order to reach her dream of being a housewife she needs to first be married! So Jooman is holding her back by not offering to give her the status she needs so she can be all that she can be? I don't see any reason why Jooman can't marry her now, but he needs the confidence to take the leap. His insecurities, because he wants to be in a better position before he gets married, will indeed lose her. Of course he can always have someone like Yejin to fall back on, but as much as the show shows us that there are similarities between his interactions with Yejin to Seo-hee, he needs to realize Yejin is not Seol-hee. So yes, they either need to get married or break up. If the latter...

Yay!!!!
So many little scenes that I LOVED in this episode!
What i love about the approach to this trope compared to other dramas is that it's not, "one friend has always liked the other, and the friend that's liked in secret doesn't realize he/she likes the other person until the other person starts dating someone seriously--you get what i mean! Like the usual approach can come off possessive but this one is like they've both always liked each other but was a matter of timing. I think what this drama does well is what the Korean remake of In Time With You failed at.
The parallel between younger Seol Hee and Yejin is crazy! They were literally the same person and there's even a tiny resemblance in their looks.
"By trying to be supportive and saying that she doesn’t care if he’s ever promoted, Seol-hee is unintentionally emasculating Joo-man by implying that she doesn’t think he’s capable of better. It’s not true, of course, and Joo-man probably knows that, but I can see why a young, beautiful woman who triggers his weakness for damsels in distress looks appealing." --I've never thought about it this way. I want to feel bad for Joo Man but if that's really the issue, wanting to feel masculine and protecting damsels in distress, there's a bigger issue there, an issue I don't think moving on to the next damsel will solve. If it doesn't work out with Seol Hee, it most likely won't work out with Ye-Jin who is a carbon copy of Seol Hee, but just newer and shinier.
Seol Hee needs to break up with him. I think they foreshadowed the likely way this relationship will end in this episode , which is that these two will break up and Joo Man will probably end up marrying Yejin a few months in their new relationship. If this is the case, I hope Seol Hee doesn't end up this pathetic character.
LASTLY (sorry for the long post), I've always figure Joo Man didn't seem that close to Dong Man aside from when they were in high school. He seems more to be Dong Man's friend who happens to date Dong Man's best friend's (Ae-ra) friend (Seol Hee). It doesn't seem like they all grew up together especially since he was describing Seol Hee as his friend's friend.
ANYWAY, what I'm trying to say is that i think while Ae-ra's-Dong Man ship are meant to be compliment to Seol-Hee-Joo-Man ship; Youth is about love and trying to find a job and it's also about settling in a place (job or relationship) you might not actually be content with and breaking up as well.
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST.

The scene with her father after the MC gig was stolen from her was really touching. The way her father encouraged her made me think for some reason that maybe Ae Ra might be adopted. you are right about hye ran being humanised. but she has become evil now, with her increasing insecurity.
she shouldn't have cheated in dongman if she was insecure about aera. if she loved him then they could have talked about it clearly. dong man is out of the world guy, if he knew about her insecurity then he would have drawn a line between friends. but she cant be excused for ruining someone career that is just too monstrous. she should be bold about what she wants instead of being a sly b* and manipulator.
come to think of it, if she cant be completely honest with him, then she shouldn't be with him. here, she means hye ran, sul hee, or just any girl in a relation, if u cannot be honest about how you feel, if you can not communicate, then better come out of it.

Ok So there's a lot that's been said about JM & SH relationships but I really want to give props to the writers and to Song Ha-Yoon's SH because they are hitting some key moments on what it's like to be in a relationship when the other person is drifting away.
This episode had her speaking up about the future with his friends and her being swept under the rug.
The argument while eating ice cream where anything she says is misinterpreted or "wrong."
He just keeps getting mad and then you can't have a honest conversation about it.
Noticing the texts and calls he doesn't pick up.
Asking/Begging him to stay when she knows he's lying.
Confronting the other woman.
Crying and feeling that loneliness outside of feeling like your losing someone you love and you're not sure what to do.
Lastly getting into bed and hugging this person that is hurting you so much.
There was a lot to sympathize but much more to empathize for me.
Aww SH <3
Sigh I know I shouldn't be so one sided but JM makes it so hard to sympathize. Just speak your feeling and be true to yourself. Take responsibility for your own life. Stop being wishy washy. Now i feel like any girl could have come at any time and he would have been "shaken."
Anyways yes yes yes yes yes DM & Ae-ra always deliver. My temperature was all over the place watching their scenes.

I can sympathize with SH only because I've seen her situation before. It's easier to wake up to what you know, than to change things and not know what awaits you when you awaken. I think it is like HR said, they both have kind of become "furniture" to each other and they need to break out of that.

I just realized something about Joo Man. After going through the previous episodes I realized that he has always been a social climber low-key. Even from the first episode while the other 3 didn’t mind being country bumpkins he was always pushing Dong Man to be cool by wearing Park Moo Bins shirt and confessing to Jang Bo Ram because she was the leader of the girls. I’m going to even take it further and say that it might have even been why he was friends with Dong Man(because Dong Man was a star when they were in high school). I think that he really did like Sol Hee but now his affection for her is being tested by his need to climb up socially. This is made worse by the fact that Jin Ye reminds him of Sol Hee AND has the social standing that he wants. We saw how his family was and I think he tried to fight that side of himself with Sol Hee but ultimately I feel like he is a product of his family and will give in to that side. I honestly don’t see him and Sol Hee lasting. With Sol Hee I think she took him as far as she could in his social climbing (by supporting him through school & stuff) & sadly he doesn’t need her anymore. I think this is why he was too embarrassed to let everyone know that they were dating.

There's nothing wrong with Seol hee wanting a simple "mediocre" life, and there's nothing wrong with Joo man wanting more out of life. However, every relationship is compromise and communication. If Seol hee and Joo man can't find a middle ground between their desires in life, then the healthy thing to do may be to call it quits. Joo man has been really wishy washy about declaring his relationship to the world. I don't doubt he loves Seol hee but he isn't protecting his relationship with her. Maybe they should take a break and figure out what direction they want to go going forward, because if Seol hee is this insecure about Ye Jin right now, there will be many more Ye Jin's down the road. If Joo man doesn't put his foot down now, what would happen in the future when other Ye Jin type females make their interest in Joo man known? Will she chase down each one of them?

/SWOON
that's pretty much been my entire reaction to Dong-man and Ae-ra together this entire episode, right from 'alcohol saved you' to THAT KISS.
And once again, Kim Ji-won kills it as Ae-ra has another moment snatched away from her. I actually wonder if she's tapping into her own experience as an actress for this - she is phenomenally talented and should have been booked straight through to lead roles four years ago, but that was a time when any young actress who wasn't an idol simply couldn't get a lead on the Big 3, and I really wonder if she's drawing on what must have been the very frustrating experience of seeing people not even a tenth as talented as she is, booking lead roles because they're idols or whatever.
I'm not fan of Kim Eun-sook's dramas, but I'm honestly grateful to her for giving KJW's career the major boost it got from Descendants, especially since she didn't have to play the usual clingy jealous second lead and got her own love line instead. She pretty much single-handedly got a very talented actress out of Second lead Hell, and better late than never, I say.

Okay, so finally, FINALLY! Dong-man and Ae-ra kiss. All that bickering and secret longing had to go somewhere deeper, right? So what happens next? This show keeps me guessing; I'm curious-er by the day. I want all four of them to succeed in their careers as well as in their relationships (romantic and otherwise).
Ae-ra here is my heroine because she's feisty and determined. She is vulnerable, too, but keeps her head up afterward. I really like her relationship with her dad and how she accepted her dad's words when he came to see her at the festival. It's really relatable how sometimes we don't want our parents/guardians to worry so much about us, because we decided to leave the family home and try our best to make it on our own in the real world. It's amazing to have parents who support you however they can even if they know it'll hurt our pride or slight us in some way.

Thanks for the recap, LP!
The whole cuddling scene is so cute. These two just love each other so much, please just get together already!!
HR should just stay away. What a b*tch!! Wanna slap her so badly. The fact that she deliberately stole AR's opportunity while remarking no one can do the job scriptless just shows how lacking she is in talent compared to AR.
KK is creepy. DM better stay away from him and keep AR away as well.
Yesss!! Finally, DM and AR face their feelings!! How sweet was that kiss and confession. Love the honesty!! And then the second kiss!! *swoon* AR finally gets to be the lead in this relationship instead of always being the side character who witnesses the main couple kissing.
Starting to be worried about JM and SH. I believe he likes her, and he keeps seeing the old SH in YJ must mean that he finds SH endearing and their relationship memorable. However, that part is dangerous since there only needs to be a fleeting moment when he mistakes YJ for SH for him to do something that he'd regret. But I hope they will overcome these obstacles and make their relationship stronger.

I am so happy for our OTP. Yassshhh ship has sailed. Although I don't think that another crazy stalker is necessary for the next episodes.
DM oh man... Dong Man ,my man. He is such straightforward that makes AR goes blank and speechless (and me as viewer)
So refreshing to see how this couple just say whatever they have in their mind. We need more of this kind of K drama couples.
As for our second couple. Sigh. In real life, people change. Life priorities change. Although I understand that JM has bigger dreams in his life, my heart also breaks for SH. They are just in two very different point right now. And both has different dreams to achieve.
As cruel as it may seems, I think YJ is right. JM SH's ship has been sinking already even before another person comes to their relationship. YJ is there at the right time. Although this should not justify any affairs.
I just want to shake SH. Get up, own your awesomeness, just like what your two besties do.
Btw at this point, I wonder how close is SH to AR. Why she doesn't tell AR about her worries?

DM what am i gonna do w u? he's so simple-minded that sometimes it hurts, but i can totally see it contributing to their relationship in a good way now that both sides have confirmed their feelings. YAY for DM AND AR! on the other hand, JM and SH are making me sad T_T i hope SH becomes stronger throughout the next episodes.

Yah I also became a fan of PSJ becos of his awesome acting in this drama...never heard of him before actually..
Just watched PSJ and some of the hwarang cast on 2D1N (2 full episodes on YouTube kbs). Laughed almost non stop till my tummy hurt!! Highly recommended! PSJ himself said he is quite like DM in real life and after watching 2D1N, I can see why. He's just so adorkable!
KJW is acting well other than the exaggerated crying...but maybe it's meant to be comedic/tongue in cheek + her way of getting attention from DM since she sometimes can turn off the tap at will.
Her aegyo is perfect though! The show really trolled us with that bed scene earlier, especially with her suggestive "Oppa, bottoms up, you hv to shoot it" aegyo just before, and asking him if he wants to sleep with her at their hotel room door. ??

Question: wait, are you saying that Dong Man has also liked Ae Ra from before?? Like like her? What made you think like that? Because of the cinema?
"And it makes me feel better knowing that Dong-man has low-grade rejected Hye-ran because of his feelings for Ae-ra before, he just didn’t know that Ae-ra felt the same as he felt."

This is my first time sincerely hoping JM and SH to break up. Not that kind of break-up-and-we-re-getting-back-together-eventually but a break up for good. If a reply-1998 writer can decide a different path (which made me sigh out of frustration) for the supposed-to-be main couple, then I know I have a higher hope for a different ending for this second-lead couple. I'll stand with SH's father here, the girl is too good for JM (not that she is perfect, but I can't excuse any form of cheating - no matter how subtle it is-). JM just doesn't deserve her and SH is not suitable for his future dream. They could be better without being together.

Dang! I hate when there's a party going on and RL keeps me from joining in. I'm sure pretty much everything I wanted to say has already been said above. So I'll just say how delighted and grateful I am that we've had three squee-inducing episode-endings in a row. Such a treat! And how happy I am that even though Ae-ra is usually the alpha in the relationship, Dong-man takes the lead sometimes. He sure did it swoonily in this ep!

Ok, so this Kyung-ku character ..... not exactly sure what his deal is, but he appears onscreen and the warning bells go off. I saw Ae-ra in that car with him and I swear, the whole time I was thinking that she couldn't get out fast enough. So relieved when he complied on opening the door and she got out.
Regarding Joo-man and Seol-hee ..... this episode just serves to confirm what I've thought for a while now ---- they need to break up ... perhaps permanently.

So worth the wait, plus all that flashbacks that hinted, at least of DM's unrecognized feelings for AR made this "finally being a couple" all the more sweeter.
I've said this a lot of times, JM & SH needs to break up to shake them all up, especially for SH's development.
Landlady Hwang, who are you, really?
*I know PHS & PSJ said last 2016 KBS Awards that they want one of those Couple awards, but KJW & PSJ hands down deserves that Couple Awards*

Can't PSJ get two couple awards? One with PHS and one with KJW?

Here is my theory about Ms. Ganako Hwang:
She may be Ae ra's mother. I didn't believe it at first but I saw her hiding and sneaking around to call Ae ra's room to give warning and calling the police ahead of time. I believe she is aware of Ae ra's dad and his nature. Another reason is why she kept saying that unmarried couple shouldn't sleep together. I believe she wants them not to commit the same mistake she had in the past. I think she gave birth to Ae ra and left her daughter to pursue her dreams or her chaebol family do not allow their marriage forcing Ae ra's dad to raise her on his own. Landlady Hwang finally grew up and no question she has a lot of money return to the villa where she could spend time with her daughter in distance. I think the hospital bill was paid by her too. She also played the role bringing Dong man and Ae ra together indirectly. Her panic for Ae ra and Dong man has something to do with her past or her regret for not being able to raise Ae ra. Everyone has their reasons.
I believe Hye-ran has her reason for her behaviour. I have gone though a lot of one sided love and it ended terribly. I was always sure or love this person. It took me three years to get over with him.
By the way, I love the chemistry between the character and real life actors, Park Seo Joon and Kim Ji Won. The chemistry is a winner.
I agree with other comments about Seol Hee and Joo-man. I like the comment when everyone hope to see Seol Hee's need to become independent and stronger to have self growth. She has a sweet and sensitive spirit. She has so much to give and her relationship with Jooman kept her from becoming who she really is. She is a wonderful girl and one of a kind. I am looking forward to that. I also think Joo man big mistake is not letting Seol Hee grow in their relationship. He just let her go and she had to do it on her own. He had to realise at the end to see his regret. I don't think she could get him back after all she had to go through.

Was I the only one who cried during Ae Ra's interaction with her dad? When he told her everyone belongs at their own level, I fully expected him to tell her to dial down her expectations. It makes sense since she's a lot older now, and he probably doesn't like seeing her get hurt over and over again, so it warmed my heart when he went the other way and showed just how much he supports and believes in her dreams. That even despite all the disappointment, he knows she'll make it one day.
Also, kyung-ku is creepy as heck... we're definitely gonna see more of him in future episodes, I just hope Ae Ra doesn't get hurt!

Landlady hwang kills me! Can't wait to find out who she is. But she was definitely hiding from aera's dad. Hyeran needs a back story. She's too evil to feel like a real person.
