Tomorrow With You PD to return with tvN remake of Hundred Million Stars From the Sky

Ooh, some progress on the tvN remake of Hundred Million Stars From the Sky! When this was last announced several weeks ago, I was eager to hear more developments, and I’m happy to report that the PD behind High School King of Savvy, Oh My Ghostess, and the more recent Tomorrow With You will be helming the new show.

PD Yoo Je-won’s list of credits isn’t long — he only has one other credit aside from those mentioned above called Heaven’s Tears on MBN — but he certainly made an impact with High School King and Oh My Ghostess. The tone of his dramas have generally been quite natural and breezy, even if his subject matter isn’t necessarily so, and I honestly don’t know how well he’ll fare with the heavy material Hundred Million Stars seems to be. I feel his signature style is more of a hands-off approach, letting the actors go off ad-libbing to great comedic effect, but I don’t think that’ll work so well with a story in the thriller genre. There were some thriller elements in Oh My Ghostess, though, and I remember being pretty creeped out when the ghost-possessed police officer showed his evil side, so I’m hoping he’ll handle his first venture into the mystery-thriller genre well.

Also, I’m desperate for a skilled writer I can trust to make this show work, because while I loved High School King and Oh My Ghostess, I felt the writing in those two shows wasn’t quite up to par with the directing and acting. I think the same problem applied to Tomorrow With You, although I dropped that show mid-way so I’m inferring that from the general commentary I’ve read. I’ve seen the comments on the previous article announcing the remake of Hundred Million Stars From the Sky and the original show seems to be widely loved, so I hope for tvN’s sake they don’t mess this up.

Casting for Hundred Million Stars From the Sky will be underway soon, and while tvN has said it doesn’t have a spot for the show on its schedule yet, I think we can expect to see the remake later this year, or early next year.

I liked Oh My Ghostess and High School King fairly well (basically for Seo In Guk in HSK). As for Tomorrow with You, I never decided to finish it. Despite not knowing what the "Hundred Million Stars from the Sky " is exactly about, I'll probably check it out. I wonder who their going to cast. Does anyone have any opinions?

i want yoon si yoon to venture to tvn. just because i like him :P . and he's a good actor. i want to see him more on tv. i'm biased #sorrynotsorry haha

the character description seems suitable for park hae jin. he does mysterious characters well. evidence: citt, mtm, bad guys. i like PHJ and follow his dramas. he's a great actor but imo, he's done so many mysterious characters.

Haizz, as much as i like PHJ in such a role. It's really unlikely to happen. Not after the situation Tvn put him in. I think he probably in some kind of Cj, Tvn's owner, blacklist...

He's doing 1987 now, and afterwards he'll do that apocalypse movie. So he's full for 2017 filming.
However he is a workaholic, so there's good hope of dramas in 2018 :)

And nowadays whenever i hear the word "remake" in the kdrama world and especially in the states, I instantly get worried

I'm deeply biased with my love for Tomorrow With You. I would watch this show based on that information alone. It doesn't hurt that I liked Oh My Ghostees as well, although I'm sure I wouldn't like it as much if I revisited it. Better to have fond memories in that case. I watched some clips from Hundred Million Stars From the Sky and I think PD Yoo Je-won capable. It helps that he has material to work off of and I haven't seen a bad remake yet--knock on wood.

Off-topic, sort of: I marathoned JIN 2 back-to-back with the first season, and loved both of them. A very different vibe from the Korean remake. Now I finally understand what was supposed to be going on with Jin's brain fetus. The way the time travel was handled in JIN was great, and was consistent with its premise. That's all I can ask of a story to deliver. The ending really got me. Thanks for putting that bug in my ear to watch it. ;-)

@pakalanapikake,
I'm very glad you enjoyed JIN and that it made things clearer for you :) I preferred Jin in season 1, he was less weepy and preachy. Apparently manga Jin was not as whiny either. Nevertheless, Osawa Takao was a sight for sore eyes in that drama and he did a great job overall.

@spazmo
Are you a fan of Osawa? XD He's certainly a looker! I haven't seen him in anything since JIN though, and I heard Hana Moyu was boring as heck.

the movie about the doctor in africa... The Lion Standing in the Wind (2015)

Ichi (2008) - oh, this was before Jin...

i haven't seen Hana Moyu...

Thankfully I haven't seen any of them yet. ?

What's one that you loved the original and hated the remake?

There are tons. Nodame Cantabile, JIN, Liar Game, Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, etc etc. Almost all of the remakes of these Japanese dramas missed the essence of the source.

Hm. Idk. That doesn't seem to vibe with the tone of the original. But who knows. Maybe a different take could work as well. I anticipate it being less dark than the original.

Omg- I can't believe you just insulted one of Korea's most prolific writers. This is what I seriously cannot comprehend. The so called revered writers like Kim Eun Sook and Park Ji Eun, they are THE ones who make use of STAR power to get away with everything. Yang Hee Seung, writer of OMG and High School King of Savvy has been writing for over 20 years. She also wrote a 500 episode drama. Can any other writer claim to have this in their resume. That alone takes mad skills. Many would have run out of ideas at 10. That's why when she writes for 16 episodes, there's never a broken flow or story running out of steam attested by recent productions like Strong Woman Do Bong Soon or Tomorrow with You. Weightlifting fairy her most recent work was also beautiful, engaging from start to finish. I remember many poignant dialogues and scenes from this production and OMG. Compared to the so called commercial greats instead, in my memory is just Gong Yoo's incredible hair, Song Joong Ki catching a handphone and his good skin and Jun Ji Yeon's hair, make up and outfits. And Jun Ji Yeon everything else. It's travesty to be honest to call her sub-par. Such strong words for a good writer who I appreciate not overhyped but instead in my opinion has one of the most consistent pen in the business

Hear, hear. I've never been a fan of Kim Eun Suk's writing in her dramas. Her dialogues usually come across more as "showy"...which is a bummer because I love her drama premises (Secret Garden, Dots, etc; in Goblin's case I put more blame on the directing style though). I think they just make up for the subpar writing with "parody-able" scenes.

I was impressed with Oh My Ghostess and Weightlifting Fairy, PD and writer-wise. There were a lot of conversations in WFKBJ that might seem ordinary, but took me pleasantly aback because I didn't expect to hear it in a kdrama (lmao) and because the most ordinary conversations are sometimes the hardest to write.

I think you are being kind to Kim Eun Suk. I think her writing his trash and shallow, her characters never really have any depth. She is good at comedic moments and her drama premises are always good, however her delivery is bad. Yang Hee Seung though is wonderful.

Hahaha I kind of agree, never liked any of Kim Eun Sook's drama either, they're usually just fun in the beginning, and really draggy in the middle to the end, but you couldn't deny that she can write hits for the people who had similiar taste with her (which in this case is many I suppose)

I never watched any of Yang Hee Seung drama besides WFKBJ, so I'm looking forward for this project since I liked WFKBJ so much!

Yang Hee Seung >> Kim Eun Sook for me too though majority would vote otherwise if judging by the rating.

High School King Of Savvy and Oh My Ghostess is in my top 5 favorite dramas of all time and I have watched them multiple times. It helps that everyone, including casts and PD crew, all have stellar chemistry (and skill!).

I have to say I didn't finish Tomorrow With You (different writer to this team), but I do adore Weightlifting Fairy (different PD to the team), so I'd say it's the writer's work that draw me in.

Agree with you. I am not fan of her drama either, but I normally watching her drama for entertainment purpose solely. Kim Eun Sook is star writer, not best writer, just like top stars such Lee Min Ho, Suzy, Kim Woo Bin ,Yoona etc etc. Are they best actors in Korea? The answer would be no. But they have the reputation to bring the investments etc. Any actor won't want to miss the opportunity to work with her. She has the reputation to make the actor in her drama to reach the stardom and it means more popularity - more money - more profit. I will be glad to see her choose more underrated actors in her next project, because even act as second leads in her drama means a lot of thing compared to many other drama . If I am Korean, I will probably name my daughter as Kim Eun Sook. Or maybe change my name instead.

too old for the role.. i love him.. but age has started to show..

I wonder how well the other guy would do.. the one from bubblegum (grim reaper)...

i think .. if they want to retain the character in the age bracket of early 20s, PHS may also do wonders... may..not sure

PHJ definitely would be the best choice of the current crop but that's ain't gonna happen..

How about joon ki :P.. he is versatile..and he hasn't done any dark roles as yet.. would love to see him pull that off..

I thought of Yoo Seung Ho at first. He surely will be able to pull it off, but not sure if the character is too old for him.. and I have always seen him in a dark mellow production, seeing him in a rom-com next instead of another dark one like this would probably better.

What about Nam Goong Min?

Actually, I feel like there are quite a few good remakes. Liar Game, Solomon's Perjury, The Liar and His Lover, and The Good Wife were all pretty good. Granted there are also the bad ones like Nodame and Bubblegum and mediocre ones like Playful Kiss and *gets ready to dodge bricks* Boys Over Flowers. All in all, the percentage balances out pretty evenly.

After Our Gabsoon, I think SJR should play more dark, cold and evil roles like he did in Age of Feeling. He didnt match to play a normal,or loser boyfriend in Our Gabsoon. He has the best chemistry with Kim So Eun in WGM (in real life) unfortunately not in Our Gabsoon. I was cringed a lot whenever they were together in their scenes in Gabsoon (yes the writing played a part of its failure) and it caused me to abandon my Solim ship. ?
